Budgets, Wells and the Summer Heat
t’s the time of year when town councils take on the task of developing a budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. It’s a tough job, especially in mining towns undergoing economic changes and having to deal with realities such as aging infrastructure, low property values, and increasing strictures from the State of Arizona. Kearny’s Town Council will be holding a special hearing for all residents on a tentative budge on Monday, June 5, at 4:30 p.m. in Town Hall. Everyone is invited to come to the hearing, proffer
suggestions, and support our Town Council in its work. There will be a special budget meeting on Monday, June 26, to finalize the budget. Again, the meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. at Town Hall. I urge as many townspeople as possible to take part in the whole procedure. Work has begun on well number 8 in the foothills outside town. Arizona Public Service is assisting with the installation of a new power box. Work will begin soon on the new chlorination system for well

The humble MVD Sold Notice may keep you out of court – it’s an easy and free online option PHOENIX – Selling your car to the guy down the street, online or to a family member is a concept that probably goes back as far as Henry Ford himself. But the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division reminds you that reporting a private sale makes good sense and may keep you out of court. Filling out a Sold Notice is simple and there is no fee. It should be completed within 10 calendar days of selling your vehicle and it can be done anytime online at ServiceArizona.com. “A Sold Notice protects consumers,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser-Richards. “If the vehicle is sold and is later in a crash or used in a crime, or if it’s simply
abandoned, the MVD will have a record of the sale. That means a former owner won’t be responsible for abandoned vehicle fees, or worse called into court to explain why the vehicle was used in a crime or crash they had nothing do to with.” MVD also keeps an eye out for unscrupulous unlicensed or licensed dealers that may attempt to sell a vehicle as though they were actually a private seller. When a vehicle is sold by a private owner to a dealer, a Sold Notice will alert MVD if that dealer attempts to re-sell the vehicle privately and ADOT Enforcement will initiate an investigation. For more information about Sold Notices, visit azdot.gov/mvd.

number 8 and the closer-to-town well number 4 which will be located near the water storage tanks. This is good news for all of us. Every once in a while the new sanitation service misses a pickup or is late in coming. Please make allowances for this. I have a hunch things will continue to smooth out as time goes on. Please call RAD itself (and not Town Hall) to report any situations. Some people have mentioned to me their pleasant surprise that they are able to recycle so many materials now that we have separate recycling containers. I’m surprised myself at all the plastic items I use which can now be used again in other ways. The summer heat is beginning to emerge. Our yards seem to have less grass and more weeds! If your lawn seems more of a hassle than it’s worth, consider converting a portion of it into a little bit of Sonoran desert. Build up an earthen berm, use some large rocks as accents and place yucca and cacti in appropriate places. Ice plants grow well here, and can serve as cover for the earth. In my own little berm,

An American Hero – Patrick Gorham Jr. By John Hernandez Copper Area News This past Monday, May 29, the United States celebrated Memorial Day. Traditionally, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion, along with their auxiliary members, use this day to clean the gravesites of our fallen military men and women. Often they will place small American Flags on the graves. We at Copper Area News want to tell the story of one of our local boys who fell in battle and honor his memory. Lest we forget. On October 3, 1944, the Arizona Republic reported that a “Superior Man Dies in Action”. The article said, “Staff Sergeant Patrick Gorham, Jr., 24-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gorham, Superior, was killed in action in France August 10, according to word received from the war department by his parents. “Sergeant Gorham, a graduate of the Superior Announcement in the High School with the Arizona Republic when class of 1938, was with an Staff Sgt. Patrick Gorham infantry company. Jr. was killed in action.

“Besides his parents, the sergeant leaves four sisters and five brothers, one of whom is with the Army Air Corps at Amarillo, Texas. “Mr. Gorham, Sr. has been chief deputy sheriff of Pinal County 26 years.” In August 1945 at a simple ceremony in Superior, Patrick Gorham Jr. was awarded posthumously the Silver Star which was presented to his parents. The action for which he received the Silver Star took place after Gorham, a squad leader, volunteered to lead a patrol into enemy territory, to gather information on German strength and disposition. The official citation for the medal said, “He led the patrol skillfully through the enemy lines and secured the desired information, then proceeded to return to his organization. “The patrol was intercepted by an enemy force on the return trip, whereupon Sergeant Gorham, with utter disregard for personal safety, stood fast and fearlessly engaged the enemy force, enabling other members of the patrol to return to their lines with the vital information. “His gallantry, zealous devotion to duty, and determination that the mission at hand be accomplished without thought of personal safety or welfare, reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Gorham’s character as a fighting infantryman.” Gorham earned the Silver Star only one week after being awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a wounded scout from an exposed forward position under enemy fire. He was serving with the 320th Infantry 35th Division when he was killed near Mortain, France. The Battle of Mortain was the first counteroffensive launched by the Germans after the D-Day landings. Although surprised and outnumbered, the Americans held, although suffering severe casualties.

Hayden seniors celebrate graduation ‘Lobo’ style with milestones, Imagine
One of the most poignant moments at the Hayden High School Commencement Ceremony came when Santiago Pina, supported by his classmates John Henry Gaona and Ryan Donovan, walked to the stage area to receive his high school diploma. Not a single person in the stadium or on the field remained seated, giving Santiago a standing ovation. Santiago was injured in August 2015 in a car accident near Aravaipa and has fought the odds, living and returning to school albeit in a wheelchair. He is an inspiration to all and we wish him the very best in his life. We are so proud of you, Santiago. Jennifer Carnes | CBN

either their concentrations do not change frequently or they are not likely to be detected. Therefore, some of the water quality testing data contained in this report, although representative, may be more than one year old. If you have questions about this water quality report please contact Regina Lynde, Environmental Compliance Manager, Arizona Water Company, P. O. Box 29006, Phoenix, Arizona 85038-9006; telephone (602) 240-6860 or e-mail mail@azwater.com. In 2000, ADEQ completed a Source Water Assessment of the water sources used by Arizona Water Company’s Winkelman water system. ADEQ reviewed the adjacent land uses that may pose a potential risk to the water sources. ADEQ determined that activity on an adjacent land use poses a high risk to two water sources. Arizona Water Company regularly monitors drinking water sources to make sure your drinking water complies with the Safe Drinking Water Act. The complete Assessment is available for inspection at ADEQ, 1110 West Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Electronic copies are available from ADEQ at dml@azdeq.gov. Your drinking water complies with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (“USEPA”) safe drinking water standard for arsenic, though it contains low levels of arsenic. USEPA’s safe drinking water standard balances the current understanding of arsenic’s possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water. USEPA continues to research the health effects of low levels of arsenic, which is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentrations and is linked to other health effects such as skin damage and circulatory problems. Note: In addition to the constituents listed in this report, Arizona Water Company conducted monitoring for over 90 additional constituents and the results show none of those constituents were detected in the water. Data presented are from the most recent testing done in accordance with applicable regulations. Some constituents are monitored less frequently than once a year because

One of the ranchers who Patrick worked for, Manuel Ruiz Sr. had a premonition and told some of his family members that he knew Patrick was never going to come back. Ray High School students take to the water
Ramon Rublacaba’s science classes spent an afternoon at the Kearny Town Pool to test their cardboard and plastic boats. The class projects were designed to bring the Archimedes Principle to life in the exercise. Archimedes principles study buoyancy. Each class was given different team challenges from designing their boats with cardboard
only, cardboard and plastic and plastic only. The teams also had to have members of their team ride in the boats and float across the shallow end of the pool. A majority of the boats made it across the pool with just a few collapsing midway from either too much weight or taking on too much water.
Ramon Rubalcaba’s science students compete at the Kearny Pool to determine what material makes the best boats. Sam Hosler | CBN
