OBITUARIES Ada Denese ‘Dee’ Wolf Ada Denese “Dee” Wolf, age 84, passed away, May 23, 2017, at home in Mount Vernon, WA. She was born in Sturgis, South Dakota to Velma (Egly) and Dennis York and raised in Mitchell, Nebraska. Robert “Bob” Wolf and Dee married in 1953 spending their married years and raising their family in San Manuel, Arizona. Dee worked for Valley National Bank, was an active member of St Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, enjoyed being Grandma, crocheting, card playing, windsock making, birdwatching, and travel. She is survived by her son, Bruce Wolf, and daughter,

Francisco ‘Chico’ Ernesto Miranda Francisco “Chico” Ernesto Miranda, 56, passed away at home on May 16, 2017, in San Manuel with his sister Grace and niece Rosanna by his side. Chico was born in San Manuel on June 12, 1960. He was raised in Mammoth. He is survived by his brothers, Ralph Garcia and Rudy Miranda; sister, Grace Escudero, and many nieces and nephews and cousins. He goes to be in Heaven with his father, Francisco R Miranda, who he missed very very much; and with his mother Carmen M Miranda, who passed away in 1969. Chico went to second grade in Mammoth, Arizona. He became ill and had to be withdrawn from school. He later attended the deaf and blind school in Tucson, Arizona.

He loved to tell stories. He is famous for his tall tales and many hats he liked to wear around Mammoth. He spoke fondly of many people in Mammoth who befriended him and gave him a place to hang out while his father was at work. Chico’s mother passed away when he was nine and his father was left to raise him alone. Chico was proud to be part Yaqui and often spoke the language. (smiley face). Services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 10 a.m. at Church of God, 301 E. Webb St. in San Manuel. After the ceremony there will be a get together and a potluck at the Church hall. Everyone is invited to bring a dish and stay afterwards to tell “Chico Stories”. Chico will be buried at Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth on a different day.

OBITUARY Gale Henritz Pennington Gale Henritz Pennington, 83, passed away from this world, of natural causes, on April 27, 2017 in Bluefield, WV. Gale was preceded in death by his wife Margery; siblings, Carl, Ed, Walt, Garnet, and Elaine: and his grandson, Thadius. He is survived by his sons, Derek and Brian; grandchildren, Jocelyn, Bailee, Kevin and Jarakah; great-grandchildren, Joy, Jaxx, Holden, and Paislee Ray; brothers, James,

Jess, John and Warren; and sister, Shirley. Gale was born in Bluefield WV, in 1934 and spent much of his life serving his country in the Air Force. It was in England that he met Margery. After returning to the States, they spent some time in Aurora, Colorado where Derek was born, then back to England for a time, where Brian was born. Gale finished his time in the Air Force at Davis–Monthan Air Force Base in

Tucson. Then, he went to work for Fry’s in Tucson, while living in Oracle. He retired from Fry’s 20 years later. A few years ago, he moved back to West Virginia with his son Brian, to be closer to his remaining siblings. Gale had an acute sense of humor, many times he was the only one laughing, which was just fine with him. He had an infectious laugh though, so he never laughed alone for long. He enjoyed being with his family,

and fishing at the White Oak Lake, the ‘family’ pond, as well as driving around the countryside seeing the sights.He is loved and missed dearly. He will be buried on June 3, noon, at Oracle Cemetery, on Oracle Avenue in Oracle.

An American Hero – Patrick Gorham Jr.

the story of one of our local boys who fell in battle and honor his memory. Lest we forget. On October 3, 1944, the Arizona Republic reported that a “Superior Man Dies in Action”. The article said, “Staff Sergeant Patrick Gorham, Jr., 24-yearold son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gorham, Superior, was killed in action in France August 10, according to word received from the war department by his parents. “Sergeant Gorham, a graduate of the Superior High School with the class of 1938, was with an infantry company. “Besides his parents, the sergeant leaves four sisters and five brothers, one of whom is with the Army Air Corps at Amarillo, Texas. “Mr. Gorham, Sr. has been chief deputy sheriff of Pinal County 26 years.” In August 1945 at a simple ceremony in Superior, Patrick Gorham Jr. was awarded posthumously the Silver Star which was presented to his parents. The action for which he received the Silver Star took place after Gorham, a squad leader, volunteered to lead a patrol into enemy territory, to gather information on German strength and disposition. The official citation for the medal said, “He led the patrol skillfully through the enemy lines and secured the desired information, then proceeded to return to his organization. “The patrol was intercepted by an enemy force on the return trip, whereupon Sergeant Gorham, with utter disregard for personal safety, stood fast and fearlessly engaged the enemy force, enabling other members of the patrol to return to their lines with the vital information. “His gallantry, zealous devotion to duty, and determination that the mission at hand be accomplished without thought of personal safety or welfare, reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Gorham’s

character as a fighting infantryman.” Gorham earned the Silver Star only one week after being awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a wounded scout from an exposed forward position under enemy fire. He was serving with the 320th Infantry 35th Division when he was killed near Mortain, France. The Battle of Mortain was the first counteroffensive launched by the Germans after the D-Day landings. Although surprised and outnumbered, the Americans held, although suffering severe casualties. Patrick was buried in France. In 1948,

his body was exhumed and returned to the United States, where it was shipped by train to Coolidge, Arizona from the East Coast. On Saturday July 17, 1948, a Requiem Mass was held for Sgt. Gorham at St. Francis Church in Superior. The Reverend F.M. Marine officiated. Funeral services were held on Sunday with Miami Elks Lodge Number 1410 in charge. Local high school making more technical classes available to students

San Manuel Jr./Sr. High School is excited to offer additional courses for the 2017-2018 school year as a member of the Pima Joint Technical Education District (Pima JTED). These courses are going to give students opportunities to further their employability skills with the industry certifications they achieve upon completion. By taking advantage of the Pima JTED courses, students and their families save approximately $17,000 to $20,000 (which is the approximate cost of the programs at technical schools). Principal, Julie Dale-Scott, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director, Terri Simon, have worked diligently with Pima JTED to add courses to what is offered at San Manuel High School. In addition to the current CTE classes: welding, automotive technology, cabinetmaking, carpentry, and digital photography, next year they will add: Information Technology – where students will learn the essential elements of computer systems and network design. They will gain the skills necessary to install, maintain, and repair computer systems. Students will also have the opportunity to earn CompTIA A+ Certification, a globally recognized certificate that can open doors to employment. Taking this class will help jumpstart their career in network systems administration, security, maintenance, and repair. This is a two-year program, and although the program will be offered online, students will report to the computer lab for class. This program is open to students in grades 10, 11, 12 First Year: IT Fundamentals and Pima Community College dual credit may be available. The second year of the program students study IT Network & Security and IT Programming. Healthcare Foundations – students in 11th grade will explore a wide range of healthcare careers, the roles and responsibilities of a healthcare team, and the importance and function of community healthcare. They will develop the professional skills and terminology required by healthcare experts through practical lab experiences including taking and charting patient vital signs, learning body mechanics, sterilization and disease prevention. Additionally students will examine how ethics, morals, cultural and personal values are upheld in medical professions. Completing this prerequisite will allow students in the 12th grade to enter Medical Assisting, Caregiver, Certified Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician programs. Healthcare Information Technology is a two-year program. In the first year, 11th grade students will develop the technical and professional skills necessary to work with medical records, disease registries, and telehealth in a variety of healthcare settings. They will also learn to work behind the scenes in a medical environment to code, categorize and manage patient information. Students can specialize in medical front office support or medical transcription. In the second year, 12th grade students will be required to get fingerprint clearance, drug testing

and a background check. In order to obtain certification, students must pass a written skills exam. These three courses will be held in a computer lab with the work being done online, and an instructor will come to the San Manuel campus 2 to 3 times per month for labs lasting about three hours. Parents will be required to sign a commitment form stating that the student will stay after school for the three-hour lab requirement as needed. The certificates achieved from completion of these courses will further the student’s ability to go directly to work after completing high school. Scott and Simon also collaborated with Central Arizona College to bring Early Childhood Education back to the San Manuel High School campus. These courses will prepare students to work with small children, while earning college credit. These classes will be hybrid combining book work, online activities and students going to the elementary school to work with the preschool children. These classes can lead to a degree in Early Childhood Education. SaddleBrooke Community Outreach continues to support our students, and through their generosity, next year the school will also be able to transport some students to

Former San Manuel student, teacher awarded for inspiring others to shine

Desiree Romo, a sixth grade Language Arts teacher at L.W. Cross Middle School in northwest Tucson and a former San Manuel student and teacher, received a top honor this month. She became one of 10 teachers in the U.S. to be honored for inspiring others to shine. The honor came when, after receiving multiple, heartfelt and convincing nominations from her students, Mister Car Wash selected Romo for the recognition as part of its Inspiring Futures – Teacher Appreciation program. Selecting only 10 grand prize recipients was no easy task, according to Ciera Lopez, community relations specialist for Mister Car Wash. Lopez said the Tucson-based company received more than 1,000 nominations nationwide during a onemonth nominating period. The company awarded prizes valued at $32,000 as a token of appreciation for teachers like Mrs. Romo who are making a real and lasting impact in their communities. Grand prize winners were awarded a $500 grant for their classroom plus a complimentary annual Unlimited Wash Club® pass. Mrs. Romo plans to utilize her grant to expand her classroom book collection. An Arizona native and mother of three, Romo dreamed of being a teacher as a child. She always pretended to be the teacher when she played school with her sister. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University and spent seven years working as a seventh and eighth grade Language Arts teacher in San Manuel, Arizona before coming to Cross Middle School in the Amphitheatre

School District of Tucson in 2015.“Ms. Romo inspires me to shine every day,” wrote one of her nominators. “When I am in her class, my imagination is like a rocket ship: it just takes off! She is kind and supportive too,” Another student fan wrote, “She isn’t an ordinary teacher even outside school and in school she teaches me about life and she is a great role model.” “Funny, nice and amazing,” are the words chosen by another of her inspired students to describe Romo. Yet another wrote, “This teacher is always by my side when I have something up with me. I’m not afraid to tell her anything because no matter what I tell her, she will always have something encouraging to say back. She always makes me happy and knows how to put me to work when she wants me to.” Romo sums up her personal philosophy when she writes, “As an educator, I know all children are capable of learning. Students should be treated equally yet individually. Praise, recognition, and connection are necessary to ensure students feel safe and comfortable in the classroom and school environment.” Teachers encounter all kinds of students and not all of them are gifted at learning or language. Still, from the words of her own nominators, it is clear that Mrs. Romo’s approach works. “Ms. Romo is one of the best teachers at my school. She is nice but stern. She lets us embrace our creativity and lets us shine,” wrote one of her students. “I’m not very good at language arts but Ms. Romo has always helped me whenever I need it. She’s very kind and respectful. She is very fun and makes the hard parts into games so we remember them for the upcoming tests.” “She’s there when I am down and kind

Celebration planned for San Manuel softball opening day San Manuel - The opening celebration of the 2017 Summer Season of Softball is scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 1, at the San Manuel Softball Field. At 3:30 p.m. the fun will start with games and jumping castles. Following, at 5:30 p.m., teams will be announced. Finally, at 6:30 p.m. the celebration will end with the anticipated softball games. Games and jumping castles will require tickets to join in the fun. Each ticket will be 25¢ each. Central Arizona College recognizes graduates PINAL COUNTY, AZ - Central Arizona College recognized the accomplishments of its graduates during a district commencement ceremony on Friday, May 12 at Casa Grande Union High School. After a welcome and introductions conducted by Dr. Mary Kay Gilliland, Vice President of Academic Affairs, the graduates were addressed by Judge Delia Neal. Following Judge Neal’s speech, the student speakers nominated and selected by the college community addressed their peers. Thao Nguyen moved to Arizona from Vietnam just a few years ago and attended CAC’s San Tan Campus. She began her education with English as a Second Language courses to get to know the language better and to help her adapt to her new society. During her time at CAC, Nguyen was involved with student leadership, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Honors Program. She is transferring to Arizona State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science. She encouraged her peers to face

difficulties head on and to not give up. “If a woman like me, who doesn’t speak English as my mother language, who knew nothing at the beginning, who didn’t have a job, a car, and didn’t even know how to drive can end up graduating from college and keep pursuing my education goals, then anyone can achieve this, if they really want to.” She continued, “Today is the beginning of another journey. It will take a lot of time and effort, it will not be easy, and you may be faced with a hundred reasons to quit, but I hope you always find a reason to stay the course and complete the journey you’ve started. You’ve already proven you can.” Mekaela Walters from the Superstition Mountain Campus received multiple nominations to be one of this year’s student speakers. She recently turned 17 and during the ceremony received an associate of arts and associate of science degree from CAC just weeks before obtaining her high school diploma from Apache Junction High School. During her time at CAC she was very active in campus events and throughout the community.

She was a student employee with student engagement and worked as a tutor in the learning center. The College recognized those faculty who were nominated and chosen by students for their representation of the very best in academic stewardship and commitment to academic excellence. Faculty of the Year awards were presented to: Titia Louise King – Aravaipa Campus; Christine Cook – Maricopa Campus; Nancy Leeder – San Tan Campus; Diane Beecroft – Signal Peak Campus; and Barbara Bushelle – Superstition Mountain Campus. Additionally, Barbara Bushelle – Superstition Mountain Campus; Stacie Kyhn – Superstition Mountain Campus; Crystal McKenna – Maricopa Campus; and Tracey Powers – Signal Peak Campus were recognized with the George Fridell Excellence in Teaching Awards. Francisco Uriarte represented the Central Arizona College Alumni and Retiree Association. He explained to graduates, “Tonight, you will receive your diploma and graduate from CAC. That does not mean that you must leave Central

Arizona College behind.” He concluded his congratulatory remarks by encouraging graduates to participate in the CAC Alumni Association. Faculty senate president Ruth Butler presented the candidates to the CAC Governing Board, which conferred the degrees and certificates. The graduating students were congratulated as they crossed the stage by the CAC Governing Board as well as President Dr. Jackie Elliott. An official list of CAC graduates will be released and published once the degrees and certificates have been confirmed. Preliminary statistics show there are 758 graduates for the 2016-2017 academic year with a total of 1,129 degrees and certificates being awarded. The oldest person to be awarded a degree or certificate this year is 71 and the youngest is 17. The number of male graduates is 292 while the number of female graduates is 462. The total number of degrees and certificates awarded by Central Arizona College in its 46 years is 23,923 given to 16,924 individuals.

The Town of Mammoth will be offering Water Aerobics at the Mammoth Pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m., starting May 30. Newman earns Bachelor of Science in Nursing Wayne Newman graduated from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee on May 6, 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He was recognized with an award for his compassion and competence by the nursing faculty on May 5, 2017 at his pinning ceremony. Wayne is a 2013 graduate of San Manuel High School where he won several Arizona state championships in track during high school and was co-Valedictorian. He also won high school swimming championships

in the 100 breast stroke. Wayne is a four-time champion of the Atlantic Sun Track and Field Conference in the 60 indoor hurdles. He set a new hurdles record this year at the Atlantic Sun Track and Field Indoor Championships to garner the Most Outstanding Track Performer. He also earned his second Outdoor Atlantic Sun Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the year honor as five Lipscomb track and field athletes earned academic nods. Congratulations, Wayne!
