An American Hero – Patrick Gorham Jr. By John Hernandez Copper Area News
This past Monday, May 29, the United States celebrated Memorial Day. Traditionally, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion, along with their auxiliary members, use this day to clean the gravesites of our fallen military men and women. Often they will place small American Flags on the graves. We at Copper Area News want to tell the story of one of our local boys who fell in battle and honor his memory. Lest we forget. On October 3, 1944, the Arizona Republic reported that a “Superior Man Dies in Action”. The article said, “Staff Sergeant Patrick Gorham, Jr., 24-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gorham, Superior, was killed in action in France August 10, according to word received from the war department by his parents. “Sergeant Gorham, a graduate of the Superior High School with the class of 1938, was with an infantry company. “Besides his parents, the sergeant leaves four sisters and five brothers, one of whom is with the Army Air Corps at Amarillo, Texas. “Mr. Gorham, Sr. has been chief deputy sheriff of Pinal County 26 years.” In August 1945 at a simple ceremony in Superior, Patrick Gorham Jr. was awarded posthumously the Silver Star which was presented to his parents. The action for which he

received the Silver Star took place after Gorham, a squad leader, volunteered to lead a patrol into enemy territory, to gather information on German strength and disposition. The official citation for the medal said, “He led the patrol skillfully through the enemy lines and secured the desired information, then proceeded to return to his organization. “The patrol was intercepted by an enemy force on the return trip, whereupon Sergeant Gorham, with utter disregard for personal safety, stood fast and fearlessly engaged the enemy force, enabling other members of the patrol to return to their lines with the vital information. “His gallantry, zealous devotion to duty, and determination that the mission at hand be accomplished without thought of personal safety or welfare, reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Gorham’s character as a fighting infantryman.” Gorham earned the Silver Star only one week after being awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a wounded scout from an exposed Announcement in the forward position under Arizona Republic when enemy fire. Although surprised and outnumbered, the Americans held, although suffering severe casualties. Patrick was buried in France. In 1948, his body was exhumed and returned to the United States, where it was shipped by train to Coolidge, Arizona from the East Coast. On Saturday July 17, 1948, a Requiem Mass was held for Sgt. Gorham at St. Francis Church in Superior. The Reverend F.M. Marine officiated. Funeral services were held on Sunday with Miami Elks Lodge Number 1410 in Continued on page 12

Helping JFK kids beat the heat
Last week, firefighters from Superior Fire Department helped kids at John F. Kennedy Elementary School stay cool through the end of school by hosing them off with water from the department’s firetrucks. The firefighters used an engine’s deck gun and a hose to spray them all down. Looks like even the firefighters had fun. Richard Brennan | Submitted

Superior Library announces Summer Reading Program: ‘Build a Better World’ The Superior Library is the perfect place for children and families to become empowered to build a better world! This summer’s reading program theme makes use of the universal appeal of creating, repurposing, and building. Through books, games, and many STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activities, participants will discover new ways of looking at the world around them. They will have the opportunity to challenge themselves, try new things, and work together to make a positive change in the world. Families will explore
the many ways we encounter the world through the five senses and common experiences. Just as skyscrapers are built to great heights, one brick at a time, participants will find themselves reaching for the stars through hands-on learning experiences this summer. The 2017 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prize drawings, storytimes, reading activities, games, and more. Families are invited to join the READ-TOME portion of the program. The program starts on
Wednesday, June 14. Preschool and Kindergarten will meet from 10-11 a.m. Grades one through three will meet from 1-2 p.m. and Grades four through six will meet from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on June 14, 21, and 28. Registration for “Build a Better World” begins on May 30 and ends June 8. For more information call the library at 520-689-2327. Hours are Monday to Thursday from 12-6 p.m. All programs are free of charge. The library welcomes children of all abilities.
The humble MVD Sold Notice may keep you out of court – it’s an easy and free online option PHOENIX – Selling your car to the guy down the street, online or to a family member is a concept that probably goes back as far as Henry Ford himself. But the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division reminds you that reporting a private sale makes good sense and may keep you out of court. Filling out a Sold Notice is simple and there is no fee. It should be completed within 10 calendar days of selling your vehicle and it can be done anytime online at
ServiceArizona.com. “A Sold Notice protects consumers,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer BowserRichards. “If the vehicle is sold and is later in a crash or used in a crime, or if it’s simply abandoned, the MVD will have a record of the sale. That means a former owner won’t be responsible for abandoned vehicle fees, or worse called into court to explain why the vehicle was used in a crime or crash they had nothing do to with.”
MVD also keeps an eye out for unscrupulous unlicensed or licensed dealers that may attempt to sell a vehicle as though they were actually a private seller. When a vehicle is sold by a private owner to a dealer, a Sold Notice will alert MVD if that dealer attempts to re-sell the vehicle privately and ADOT Enforcement will initiate an investigation. For more information about Sold Notices, visit azdot. gov/mvd.

Golden Rule Care LLC T
iffany Rowell has devoted her life to the service and caring of others. Since she was a young woman she has been providing home health care for her family. She eventually went to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. When she started her professional career working in assisted living homes and nursing homes, her philosophy didn’t always match the policy of most corporate homes. Seven years ago, she opened Golden Rule Care in Superior in an effort to help families have options when it comes to their home health care needs. She and her staff can customize the needs for their family. Golden Rule Care can also assist with basic errand running, grocery shopping, pet care. They do accept insurance or, if these services are not covered under your insurance, they have affordable rates. They also provide respite care for families who need a break from caring for loved ones. Rowell wants to let everyone know that home health care is not always unaffordable. Many times a person only needs an hour or two a day. While they
can provide 24-hour care, not every patient needs that. She and her staff of four also strive to ensure that each patient can maintain their independence, helping them to strengthen muscles through basic mobility exercises and assisting with home organization so that way a patient can remain mobile in their home for longer. Her advice to her fellow entrepreneurs and caregivers: “It is important to understand risk and your insurance coverage in your business.” She shared all the complexities of aiding in health services and protecting both her business, employees and clients. Her long term goals for Golden Rule Care LLC is to open an assisted living home in Superior that will allow locals to keep their loved ones close, even if they are no longer able to stay in their home. The motto at Gold Rule Care LLC is truly the golden rule - “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” They offer free consultations to help quote services. SCHEDULE A
Patrick went to work as a mechanic at the Magma smelter. He was also a cowboy and worked on some of the local ranches. His brother, Jack Gorham, said that Patrick used to carry a photograph of his horse in his wallet. He joined the Army on Feb. 2, 1942, two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. One of the ranchers who Patrick worked for, Manuel Ruiz Sr. had a premonition and told some
of his family members that he knew Patrick was never going to come back. He said, “That boy isn’t afraid of anything.” On this Memorial Day, we honor those men and women who gave their lives to protect our country. Let us give thanks and pay tribute to these brave souls. *“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.” – General George S. Patton

Superior fun in the sun – free swim day for school kids
Parks and Recreation got the town pool ready and opened early this year. The Town offered up the pool to the School District for some fun end of the school year activities. On May 12, the Junior High had a free swim day and BBQ. On May 18, the JFK Elementary kids took over the pool and had a great time playing on a giant inflatable waterslide provided by the school’s student council.
