OBITUARY Angelina Renee Soto Angelina Renee Soto departed this world on March 5, 2019 at Desert Banner Hospital in Mesa.

Angelina was born on Nov. 1, 1979 in Superior to Rosemary Hernandez and Mark Macias. She attended school in Superior until her diagnosis of Lupus in January 1997. Although she was ill she never allowed it to control her. Angelina lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed

Angelina loved her family and always looked forward to spending time with all of them at her sister’s and brotherin-law’s ranch in Torreón, New Mexico. She was closest of all to her mom Rosemary, who was dedicated to helping and guiding Angelina through life with her illness. They lived, laughed and traveled through the highways of life together.

love for animals and had many pets through the years.

Her smile held the innocence of a child and could brighten up an entire room. Her memories she leaves us with will forever be our light we cherish and share on our upcoming days without her.

She is preceded in death by her one and only baby girl, Soledad, and one of her favorite nephews, Michael Lopez. She is survived by her parents, Rosemary Hernandez and Mark Macias; siblings, Anna Garcia (Paul), Paul Macias (Maggie), Mark Macias Jr. (Angie), Christine Macias Gomez, Joey Macias (Gloria), Carlos Macias (Michelle) and Sandra Meraz; and countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends and family who love and cherish the time we had with her.

Angelina’s kind heart and amazingly strong spirit will never be forgotten. Run free atop the clouds, Angelina.

You will forever be greatly missed.

April 4 Manuel Ramirez, 42, Phoenix, was arrested in the area of US Hwy. 60 and Panther Dr. and was cited and released for having an open container of alcohol.

April 5 Criminal damage was reported in the zero block of Kumpke Ct. Officers attempted to make a warrant arrest in the 600 block of Porphyry St., but they were unable to locate the suspect.

Criminal damage was reported in the area of US Hwy. 60 and Church Ave. April 7 Violation of a court order was reported in the 400 block of Main St. Robert L. Ramirez, 31, Superior was arrested in the area of Western Ave. and US Hwy. 60 on a child support warrant issued out of Gila County. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence.

Benjamin M. Salinas, 32, Superior, was arrested in the area of US Hwy. 60 and Belmont Ave. and charged with obstructing the highway after officers received a report of a traffic hazard. Salinas was cited and released.

April 8 Antonio J. Ramirez, 44, Superior, was arrested in the zero block of Pinal Ave. and was charged with aggravated domestic violence (DV). felony disorderly conduct/ DV, assault/DV, threatening/DV and disorderly conduct/DV (misdemeanor).

He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

April 9 Theft was reported in the 400 block of East St. Andrew T. Guerrero, 49, Superior, was arrested in the area of Terrace Dr. and Lobb Ave. on a probation violation warrant and a failure to appear (FTA) warrant, both issued out of Pinal County. He was

transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

April 11 Theft was reported in the 800 block of Wilhoyt St. A missing person report resulted in an arrest of a juvenile.

April 12 Julian A. Silvas, 32, Superior, was arrested in the area of Heiner Dr. and Stone Ave. on a pre-adjudication rule warrant issued out of Pinal County. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

John P. Dewey, 41, Globe, was arrested in the 800 block of US Hwy. 60 on a child support warrant issued out of Gila County and an FTA warrant issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

A missing person report was made in the 600 block of Wight St. April 15 Assault was reported in the 700 block of Church Ave. April 16 Burglary was reported in the 200 block of Lobb Ave. April 18 Jordan D. Winters, 27, Claypool, was cited and released in the 800 block of US Hwy. 60 for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

April 19 A hit and run accident was reported in the 1100 block of Stone Ave. An accident with injuries was reported at milepost 222 on US Hwy. 60. The call was turned over to DPS. Theft was reported in the 400 block of Picket Post Dr. April 21 Criminal damage was reported in the 100 block of Richard Ave. April 22 Antonio J. Ramirez, 44, Superior, was arrested in the zero block of Pinal Ave. and was charged with aggravated DV and aggravated assault/DV. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

April 23 Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of Kiser St. April 24 Anessa Astor, 20, San Carlos, was cited and released in the area of US Hwy. 60 and Church Ave. for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of Ray Rd. The Superior Police and Fire Departments have contracted all dispatch services to the Pinal County Sheriff (POLICE) and Florence PD (FIRE). As a result of these

Community Working Group to hear plans for outdoor recreation and economic development in Superior On Wednesday, May 15, the Superior Community Working Group (CWG) will hear about and discuss a new proposed multi-use recreation plan – submitted to Tonto National Forest by the Recreation User’s Group. The plan includes specific new and existing motorized and nonmotorized area hiking, cycling, and off-road vehicle trails and uses. In addition, Town officials will present other new recreation and economic development plans for Superior. This CWG meeting will be held, starting at 6 p.m., in the Superior Chamber

of Commerce meeting room.

The CWG includes residents and stakeholders from the Town of Superior, Queen Valley, Hewitt Station, Globe, Kearny, Winkelman, the San Carlos Community and around the area. The group deals with the social and environmental issues, science and policy, and the pros and cons of the proposed Resolution Copper Project. Ray thwarts Superior’s chance at a 3-peat

The Ray softball team won its second state championship in four years on Monday night at Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University, defeating rival and defending state champion Superior, 7 – 4.

“Our girls never gave up,” Ray head coach Rene Pacheco said after the win. “We knew we were going to have some clutch hits. We had faith in each other.”

Ray, which entered the playoffs as the state’s top-ranked team, and Superior have combined to win the past five Division IV then 1A Conference championships. The Pantherettes took the title in 2015, 2017-18 while the Lady Cats won in 2016 and now 2019. During that time, the two teams have played at least twice during the regular season and three more times in the state playoffs, including twice in the championship game. Superior defeated Ray to win

the 2017 title, 1 – 0 before Ray exacted a little revenge in 2019. To say the teams are familiar with one another would be an understatement.

“We have three small communities within 20 miles – Superior, Hayden and Kearny – all baseball and softball little towns,” Pacheco said. “Our girls knew it probably was going to come down to us two. We had to hope we weren’t on the same side of the bracket because we wanted a chance to play Superior in this game.”

“We have a lot of respect for the Superior girls,” he continued. “Every game has been a battle as you can tell.”

Ray held a 4 – 2 lead entering the Superior fifth, when the Pantherettes scored a pair of runs on an error and RBI single by Marissa Estatico to tie the game. Ray answered in its half of the inning after Danielle Barajas hit an RBI single to drive in Amee Kenyon, who had doubled earlier.

The Lady Cats added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Julie Meza singled to drive in a run before Kenyon,

who went 3-for-4 in the game, tripled to plate Meza. “(That run) was extremely important,” Kenyon said. “It was a good feeling.”

Ray starter Daniella Hinojos, who started every game this season, earned the victory. Having the Lady Cats’ ace on the mound was a confident booster for her teammates.

“We knew having Daniella on the mound would give us a chance; she has all year,” Pacheco said.

Added senior Tara Lorona, Ray’s All-Region catcher: “There was no doubt Daniella was going to have a good performance. She’s been prepared for this all season and she was dialed in.”

Superior, which scored the first to runs of the game, just couldn’t match its offensive production in the later innings.

“We had some fatigue,” Superior head coach Al Lopez said. “I thought we were going to hit the ball better (at the end) but we didn’t.”

Runners up for the 1A Softball Championship, but still champs in our eyes. Congratulations, ladies, on a great season!

Taseko’s Florence Copper produces +99.9% copper cathode in first harvest

Taseko Mines Limited is pleased to announce that a first harvest of 3,700 pounds of copper cathode (32 sheets x 117 pounds), was made at the Florence Copper Project. The copper cathode has been assayed at higher than 99.9% copper by Minerals Technology, LLC, an independent laboratory.

SHS Class of 1969 celebrates 50-year reunion The Superior High School Class of 1969 celebrated its 50year class reunion late last month at the Martinez Ranch in Superior. For many of the 95 graduates they have not seen each other since graduation night in June of 1969.

Classmates traveled from across the state and country to attend the reunion. Classmate Jessica Mitchell, who

traveled from New York City, earned the award for traveling the furthest for this milestone reunion.

Many of the classmates enjoyed accommodations and amenities at the Hotel Magma. The classmates spent time reminiscing and their hope is to continue to gather their classmates together at least once a year.

Town of Superior hires Town Engineer

The Town of Superior recently hired an inhouse Town Civil Engineer, Svetlana Clark.

Svetlana and her husband moved to Arizona from the Bay Area of California.

She was born and raised in Russia and attended college in Russia to become a Civil Engineer. She shared that she had wanted to become a teacher like her mother, however her mother wanted her to have bigger opportunities and insisted she study to become a civil engineer.

“We did what our parents said, no complaining,” she said. Ultimately, she has found a love of working to design the land to accommodate development and growth.

During her career in the Bay Area, Svetlana worked for CalTrans. She enjoys working with the tech programs for civil engineering. She devoted time to learn the Auto CAD program on her own, which has been valuable to her career. In California, she worked the development of roads and infrastructure around the Golden Gate Bridge.

In just a few short weeks with the Town of Superior, she has designed and prepared several upcoming town projects including the expansion of Besich Park, the US 60 Park improvements and various road work projects. She also meets residents who are processing building permits. In many cases, if permit fees are paid she can

approve plans and designs within 24 hours.

She is also there to provide more hands on customer service for those who are planning to build or expand a structure.

She enjoys working in Superior.

“It is beautiful here and the people are very nice.” she said.

Svetlana grew up loving the books of Jack London and many western novels and now she can live in the terrain and geography that made these stories come to life.

“I am happy to be here and help the Town make things better,” she said.

Svetlana and her husband enjoy traveling around the state of Arizona. She enjoys gardening and growing things. She grew up on a farm in Russia, the opportunity to continue planting and growing a garden reminds her of home and also provides a relaxing activity. They have a 21-year-old daughter who will be moving to Arizona to attend Arizona State University.

The hiring of an in-house engineer will save the town $20,000 a year and will provide more immediate customer engagement when permits come in to the Town. Over the past two years, permit applications increased in addition to the ongoing Town projects that require civil engineering work. The Town will maintain a contract with Willdan Engineering for final stamps and approvals.
