Lightningignited wildfires are expected to occur over the next several weeks as monsoonal moisture moves into the area. While some fires will be immediately evident, others may remain undetected for several days until conditions become favorable for them to grow into observable incidents. It is anticipated that normally-occurring wetting rains will be associated with many of the lightning events and sufficient rain will fall to reduce wildfire activity and pause the Coronado’s year-round fire season. Copper Corridor Softball: Home of Champions By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The Superior softball team recently won its second state title in four years, claiming the 2015 championship in addition to last month’s triumph. During the past four years, Superior has made three appearances in the State Championship game and reached the semifinals in the other. Between the Pantherettes’ most recent titles, the Ray Lady Bearcats won backto-back state championships in 2016 and 2017. San Manuel, under the leadership of Deanne Brewer, made three-straight trips the State Championship game from 201315, wining back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. For nearly two decades, Hayden was at the top of the softball state hierarchy, wining four-straight titles (1986-89) and appearing in five championship games between 1997-2002. Superior head coach Martin Navarrette took over the Pantherettes program in 2014 and led his team to the playoffs

every year since. He envisioned building a program that’s turned into one of the state’s most successful. Navarrette executed his plan for long-term success. “From Little League all the way up we’ve been with these girls,” the two-time State Champion head coach recently told Copper Area News. “I’ll tell you right now, softball is on everybody’s mind in Superior, starting with the little girls coming up, and that’s going to make a big difference. “They keep playing, moving up through the ranks, and (a state championship) is the result we’re going to get in the end.” San Manuel, Ray and Superior have seen several players move on to the next level, including Lyana Waddell, Stormee Galka, and Gabby Salcido. Most recently, Ray’s Janae Ruiz, and Superior’s Kiki Arriola, Tori Juarez and Analysse Jaurez will play at the next level. Sending players to college attracts more players to build the programs. “Absolutely, they want to be a part of it,” Navarrette said. “They want that championship too. That’s all anyone talks about. I’ve got eight-graders telling me

From Family First: What Makes a Good Day? “Have a good day,” is a phrase we hear from friends, loved ones, or someone we casually see in a restaurant, bank or any other place of business. We get so used to hearing these words we might easily overlook them. But have we ever sat down and asked ourselves, “What qualifies as a good day?” Do we sit down each morning, map out our day and create a list of characteristics of a “good” day so that when we lay down at night we can

check off our items and say, “This day met the standard?” We might have “To Do” lists, but I doubt any of us has a “Good Day” list. Instead, we go through the day and if someone asks us at the end, we might say, “I had a good day” or “It was a tough day.” We figure it out based on how we feel when we’re done, right? At Family First, maybe we need to set a standard for what makes a good day. If we did, what would that

standard be? I’ve got an idea… A Good Day is when we have an opportunity to love someone who comes in our door; without condition, without judgment and without a pre-set agenda. A Good Day is when we’ve done our best and know God was present in our work. A Good Day is when we’ve loved each other and encouraged each other along the way. A Good Day is not dependent on results or circumstances; but is instead defined by our outlook and our love for each other and for others. If we do our part, we know God will be present and active. If we pursue a Good Day, every day, the results—whether it be saved lives or changed hearts—naturally follow. Perhaps you’re looking for a place to “Have a Good Day.” If so, think of us. Drop us an email at www.familyfirstpcc. org or give us a call 520-896-9545. We are always looking for more to loin our volunteer team. Together, let’s have a lot of good days so that moms, dads and babies will have many, many great days ahead.

FIRE RESTRICTIONS Continued from page 2

campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, including within a developed recreation site, or improved site. • Using an explosive. • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building. (Smoking is prohibited in all federal buildings.) • Operating or using any equipment powered by an internal combustion engine, except motor vehicles. • Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. • Discharging a firearm, air rifle or gas gun, except while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal law, and regulations. • Possessing or operating motor vehicles off National Forest System roads, including but not limited to cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, and ATVs, except for when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway, and except for parking overnight in Forest Service developed campground and trailheads. Fireworks are always prohibited year-round on federal lands. Thunderstorms may develop quickly and without warning. Heavy rainfall may cause flooding of roads, streams, trails and canyons during and after storms, especially in areas that have recently burned. In mountainous areas with limited access, road closures and delays are possible if roads become compromised by erosion, rock slides or debris flows. Motorists are

encouraged to carry extra food, water, flashlights and warm clothing, and to be prepared for temporary delays which could last hours for road-clearing. Recreationists are advised to check weather forecasts for areas they plan to visit and plan accordingly. Thunderstorms can develop quickly and may bring heavy rain, hail, lightning, strong winds and cooler temperatures. Flooding downstream from storm cells is common. Tips for lightning and flooding safety: • Postponing activities when storms are in the forecast may prevent being caught in a dangerous situation. • When outdoors, monitor the weather and watch for signs of thunderstorms. • Develop a lightning safety plan by knowing where to go for safety and the amount of time needed to get there. • If thunder can be heard, lightning may strike. Seek shelter in an enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open areas and trees. • Rain falling high in the mountains will drain downhill, and may cause flash flooding below areas where rain is falling. Avoid low-lying areas, streams and slot canyons during and after storms. If flooding occurs, seek safety on higher ground. Planning ahead and using situational awareness is recommended to prevent monsoon storm-related emergencies.

Sea Lions win home meet against Coolidge

The Sea Lions Swim Team hosted the Coolidge Dolphins at the Mammoth Pool on Saturday. For over 11 years, the Sea Lions have won every dual meet in the Central Arizona Swimming League, but most of the close wins have been against Coolidge. Even though the weather forecast predicted rain, and it rained during most of the meet, both teams showed up and competed at a high level. The Sea Lions won the meet 797 – 593. As the meet began, the Sea Lions took a small lead after the Individual Medley (IM) events. It is part of the team culture that all Sea Lions swimmers learn all four of the competitive strokes and compete in the IM. Following the Individual Medley events was the Medley Relay. In this race each swimmer swims a different stroke in the relay. Out of the 10 relay age groups, the Dolphins won 5 relays and the Sea Lions won 5 Relays, making it clear that that both teams were ready to battle for every point. During the rest of the meet, the Sea Lions did what they always do best – they swam every event and swam well. Through the Butterfly and Backstroke Events, the Sea

Lions’ lead grew. In the second half of the meet, the Dolphins showed the strength of their team in the Breaststroke and Freestyle events, but it was not enough to close the lead on the Sea Lions. The Sea Lions put an exclamation point on the meet by winning 7 out of the 10 Freestyle Relays at the end of the meet. One of the most exciting relays was the 9-10 girls relay where Jessica Rouse held off a charging Coolidge Swimmer by less than 1/3 of a second. Winning in the rain was something the Sea Lions have not had to do before in a summer meet. “Both teams showed a lot of determination and grit competing in the rain. Judging by how fast the Sea Lions were swimming, the weather did not slow them down at all,” Coach Alex Gort indicated. Sea Lions Swimmers achieved many personal best times at the meet. Vicente Curry (12) was the only Sea Lion who swam the maximum number of events in his age group and earned personal best times in each one. The following swimmers swam the maximum number of the events at the

times in every race at the meet. Not only did he have best times in every race, the size of the improvements was tremendous. For example he dropped 30 seconds in the 100 IM from his previous best time of 2:04 to a sizzling time of 1:34. Vicente was wearing a new team cap for his races, and that along with the combination of hard work and paying attention to the details in each stroke, made a difference. The Sea Lions will attend their next meet in Florence on Saturday, June 23. There is still time to join the team contact Alex or Wendy Gort at 896-2190 or stop by the Mammoth Pool between 4 and 5:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday) for more information.
