On behalf of the Gomez Family, The gratitude in our hearts is strong, these last few weeks and we want to take a moment to thank everyone who has had our family in their thoughts and prayers. Although we are in a time of mourning for our beloved Dad & Tata Guillermo Gomez, we feel the love and support from our families and friends. We can’t thank you enough for all that you have done for us, from the meals to my parents’ house, to the monetary donations. We had so much food, so many people came to the Church service, it was a true testament of how many lives our Dad touched. As we talk to different people, it warms our hearts when we hear stories about Dad. He truly was a one of a kind Man. He will live in our hearts forever. May God continue to bless you and your families. Love always, The Gomez Family

Keeping the Copper Corridor Beautiful I
bet you noticed the bright colors in Superior, not on the front of the downtown buildings, but on the back. The purpose of the paint job is simple: to make people aware that there is downtown district, despite having to get off the main road to see it. And it worked! Superior’s Chamber of Commerce figured that tourism was up at least twenty percent with a corresponding increase in income. Now, the paint job along didn’t do it all. Once people turned off the road to see the downtown, they saw well-cared for buildings and interesting shops. But if people hadn’t gotten off the highway, they would have missed it all. In the Copper Basin, three of our towns have worked to get people to stop – Mammoth, Winkelman, and Kearny. What was done and how has it worked? Mammoth has its roadside park with its Ore Cart as well as a display of other sculptures and narrow gauge ore cars. Winkelman has its Ore Cart (a fine piece of art) and a pleasant corner with trees and flowers. Kearny has its Rail and Copper Park. There a some similarities (mining and
trains) but there are dissimilarities too. Mammoth’s park is readily accessible from the highway. It is not as well marked as it could be, but many people do stop to visit the exhibit and enjoy the shade of the trees. Winkelman’s park is smaller, but is designed very well. It, too, has shade for visitors. But it is very poorly marked and
parking is difficult to find. The Rail and Copper Park in Kearny is very visible from the road (like Mammoth) but it is not nearly as accessible. The red caboose is particularly noticeable, but the
plantings have suffered over the years from lack of water. As a result, there is no shade. There’s plenty of parking, but “newbies” have to figure out that the entrance is off Continued on page 9

The Lopez family are the owners of Links of Superior.
Cat Brown | Sun
Links of Superior is the latest business to take up shop in Smokey’s Mercantile. The Copying and Printing shop, which opened on March 3, has already found its niche and has been busy taking on jobs from the Towns of Winkelman and Kearny, as well as doing work for the Superior Chamber of Commerce. Run by Dave Lopez and his wife Diana Acuna Lopez, the idea for the shop came around because of Dave’s transplant surgery. When Dave was in the hospital for his transplant, Diana found herself dealing with a lot of paperwork. Paperwork that often needed to be copied and faxed. When Diana found that there was no place she could get copies or fax in town, she decided this would be the perfect venture for her husband when he got out of the hospital. And so started the couples copying, printing and faxing business. As the business grows the couple has plans to add retail stock; school supplies the local teachers and students may need. Besides copying and printing the shop also offers photo digital printing. Dave and Diana have a keen interest in helping the community. They recently did a fundraiser to raise money so they could buy backpacks that they are filling with school supplies and are going to donate to the local schools.

ADOT crews now can clear travel lanes of minor wrecks With a goal of keeping drivers and first responders safe and traffic flowing, Arizona Department of Transportation personnel are now authorized to clear or order removal of vehicles that are involved in minor crashes. When incidents occur, ADOT coordinates with Arizona State Troopers to set up traffic control, close highways and, when necessary, arrange hazardous materials cleanup. When ADOT personnel arrive before State Troopers at the scene of a minor crash or when State Troopers ask them to do so, a new agency policy empowers them to take action to clear travel lanes. “Quickly clearing hazards is a proven way to make everyone safer, including State Troopers, ADOT personnel and others responding,” said Brent Cain, ADOT’s director of Transportation Systems Management & Operations. “Having
ADOT’s highly trained crews take action when appropriate to keep traffic moving promotes safety and reduces congestion.” The change stems from best practices in Traffic Incident Management (TIM) strategies, including the principle of Quick Clearance. Getting vehicles that are involved in minor crashes out of travel lanes quickly makes the roadway safer for other vehicles and emergency responders, reduces the chance of secondary crashes when traffic approaches the incident and minimizes overall traffic congestion. State law requires drivers involved in minor crashes that don’t involve injuries to get their vehicles out of travel lanes as soon as it’s safe to do so. State Troopers must authorize removal of vehicles involved in crashes that result in serious injuries or deaths.

By the way, Bill Dunn (of ranching and the GKI) has been helpful cleaning Kearny’s park and watering the plants,
