LETTER TO THE EDITOR Long Days of Sunshine Summer is in full swing, the weather is warm, with long days of sunshine! We all have our favorite summer pastime to spend our vacation. It sometimes seems it can take as much time to plan and get ready for a vacation as it does actually doing it! Some off to the mountains, to the beach, to a new city sightseeing, what a great time of the year! I remember growing up back in Ohio, all I needed was a fishing pole, an old coffee can with a few worms, and I was set for a day at the pond fishing. If it got a little warm, I would jump in and do a little swimming, get out and back to fishing. Summers were fun, best of all no school. Summer can be that time of much needed rest from our busy schedules or a time of non-stop hiking, biking, traveling and sightseeing! Whatever it is it’s always better

with someone, some family or friends. For those who stay here, Family First is open all summer long, with doors open wide to help our families here in our community. Story time is a little busier this time of year, along with many new clients who now have more time, with school out, to come into the center for classes. Also with school out, our “Ten for Teens” kids are spending more time helping at our centers. We are so grateful to them for all that they do! Whatever you may do, we pray you have a fun, safe and relaxing summer, enjoy it for the special time that it is! God Bless, /s/ Frank & Clare Grochocki

Firefighters working Firefighters continue to gain ground on the Roach Fire burning near Dudleyville in and as of Monday evening have the fire 75% contained. More than 200 firefighters from across Arizona and the Southwest are working to ensure fire lines are holding up due to gusty winds associated with the afternoon monsoons storms. Crews also continue to patrol for hot spots and possible new starts because of lightning strikes. Fire Managers stress that residents may still see flare ups of the fire and shouldn’t be alarmed. The fire quickly moved through salt cedar vegetation along the riverbed. Salt cedar, also known as Tamarisk, is a nuisance and hazard to firefighters. Tamarisk is not
only highly flammable, but it causes a fire to burn hotter and faster. Within hours of starting, the Roach Fire grew to three miles long and ½ mile wide before air and ground crews had the chance to stop its movement and its growth. Evacuations were begun immediately by Pinal County Sheriff’s Office on Cholla Road near Palo Verde due to the proximity of the fire and the threat to nearby homes. Eleven buildings were destroyed in the fast moving wildfire, two of which were occupied homes. No information was given on which homes were destroyed. By midnight Friday, 100 families were evacuated; 500-600 were without power; and 300 homes were without gas.

to fully contain Roach Fire in Dudleyville Dudleyville evacuees began returning to their homes on Sunday night. Electrical service was restored by San Carlos Irrigation Project. Southwest Gas utility workers went door to door restoring service Sunday evening and throughout Monday. Power and gas were shut off for safety and it was reported that several power poles had been destroyed in the fire. The American Red Cross established an evacuation/cooling center at the Hayden High School. Additionally, San Pedro Valley Baptist Church was open for evacuees and was established as the incident command center. Highway 77 was closed temporarily Friday night, but was reopened by 1:45 a.m. to
allow traffic through. Dudleyville Fire Department was first on scene and was the main responder and dispatcher throughout the emergency. Many other agencies sent firefighters to the scene. The Department of Forestry and Fire Management, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, along with tribal and fire departments from Mammoth, Hayden, Winkelman, Superior, Queen Valley, Oracle, San Manuel, Pinal Rural, Globe, Elephant Head, Picture Rocks, Surprise, Corona de Tucson, Golder Ranch, Rincon Valley, Mesa, Hellsgate, Sun City, Heber-Overgaard, Tubac, Kearny, Pinal County, and Timber-Mesa are collaborating on the fire. Oracle’s CERT
team was on hand to lend support to the firefighters. Pinal County Public Works Monday announced that it will host a cleanup event for fire related debris. Fire damaged items including: appliances, construction material, green waste, large metal objects, refrigerators and structural materials can be taken to the Dudleyville Landfill Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hazardous and other materials such as fuels, pesticides, fertilizers, propane tanks, motor oil, lubricants, whether damaged by fire or not, cannot be disposed of properly at a landfill. Non-acceptable items also include: anti-freeze, batteries, hazardous waste, household trash, oil, paint and tires.
Any residents bringing non-acceptable items will be turned away. No commercial business loads will be accepted either. Heritage Environmental Services will take all hazardous items for Pinal County. Please call 520-723-4167 for more information. Any questions about the recovery cleanup should be directed to Jason Jordon at 520866-6685 or 520-705-8824. Roach Fire and the Insidious Growth of the Salt Cedars
A
long the San Pedro might be a better title for my column this week. Our hearts and minds are moving in several directions at once: towards anger and grief that the fire took place; towards love and concern for all who are affected; towards thanks and appreciation for all the people who provided, and continue to provide, help and assistance. The danger is not over. Salt cedar roots can smolder for days before springing back into flames. The heat of the summer continues, and all along the San Pedro and the Gila the salt cedar plants stretch on either side for mile after mile providing the fuel for future disaster. A hundred years ago the salt cedars were not here. The rivers flowed through natural desert area, with native trees along the banks, especially the willows which provided nesting places for birds. Then the salt cedar (also known as tamarisk) arrived. It was native to Russia, and was imported to stabilize soil and provide wind breaks. How did it get here? Maybe a farmer in New Mexico planted it, and the Gila carried seeds down the river banks. Maybe birds spread the
P
seeds. However it happened, the salt cedar took root throughout Arizona and grew rapidly, its tenacious roots crowding out other plants. In addition, the invasive plant changes the nature of the soil around it, affecting the nutrient structure in a way that causes other plants to die. This provides more room for the salt cedar to grow and spread, and the cycle goes on. First steps have been taken to remove at least some of the salt cedar in this area. The Winkelman Natural Resources Conservation District and the Town of Kearny have been cooperating with each other, and with the State of Arizona and U.S. Government, to begin the work. A small amount of money from the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) is being matched with lots of volunteer labor and offers of equipment from ranchers, home owners, and businesses. It’s not just a matter of tearing up the plants. The roots go deep. The plant multiplies rapidly. Disposing of removed plants can spread the seeds. Since the plant grows mostly beside rivers, we have to take care that our work to get rid of the plant doesn’t cause other problems, such as
ALONG THE GILA By Sam Hosler Special to Copper Area News
affecting river flow and flood plains, or disturbing the environment of rare species. It would not be good to solve one problem only to create a host of others. But the problem remains. We have a volatile fuel lining our rivers and surrounding our towns. It will take much cooperation and lots of solid effort to develop a workable approach which removes the salt cedar and moves the river banks to their natural state of a hundred years ago. And what a change that will be!
Please, Please Me, Oh Yeah!
lacebo, the Latin word meaning “to please”, refers to pain relief and healing of health complaints that happens due to a persons’ belief. This belief can stem from a sham treatment, a psychological or spiritual change, or due to a suggestion from a respected source, whether medical doctor or shaman. Many have heard of the little white sugar pill being prescribed which then stops Aunt Hattie’s headaches. From this we can think she was imagining the headaches and just needed attention and that’s all there is to it. Science now shows that our confidence the pill will help actually turns on our “internal pharmacy”, releasing opioids for pain relief, and other hormones and neurotransmitters that help balance body processes. You have to have an expectation
this healing change will happen. For instance, previously helping a headache by taking an aspirin fired a pathway in brain and spinal cord areas that reduced pain. This pathway is found to be duplicated when the placebo is then taken. We are also socially conditioned to honor the white coats, stethoscopes, and high tech equipment common today, all of which is part of what is called “the theater of medicine.” These trappings are part of our shared social views, and increases confidence in the treatment. Medical research now feels surgery may be the main driver of the placebo response in our current healthcare approaches. The power of placebo has been documented in numerous studies, sometimes with remarkable results. In a study on anti-depressants, a woman

Lions Club hosts international youth exchange By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner
On Saturday, July 8, the San Pedro Valley Lions Club in Mammoth hosted a luncheon for a group of young women and men from around the world. This was the 4th consecutive year that the Mammoth Lions have participated in the C. Kirby Smithe Lions Youth Exchange program. The annual exchange program hosts up to ten
students and provides them with a two-week experience living with an Arizona host family. They are given a tour of Arizona and given an opportunity to learn about the diversity and culture of our state. In Mammoth, the students enjoyed a lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs, French fries, drink and dessert. They were also presented with gift bags. The students were asked what regional food they have enjoyed the most so far. Greek food was popular with a few of the students
as well as hamburgers. One student liked Mexican food, there was a vote for Italian, one enjoyed his first taco salad and one girl really liked Tres Leches cake. This year’s students were: Isabella Carboni – Brazil; Hilary Weyers – Netherlands; Rieke-Marie Hackbarth – Germany; Astrid Ricquier – Belgium; Luke Canning – England; Kristof Fabry – Hungary; Ingrid Skalstad – Norway; Alexandr Savin – Russia; Rikke Hoeier Jeppesen – Denmark.
