LETTER TO THE EDITOR Former resident offers suggestion for honoring mining history \ One of the key elements to “honor the mining history while preparing for the future” is establishing an operation that has the capability to provide some revenue to assist in offsetting overhead costs. As we all know, personnel, utilities, office equipment, supplies, and marketing are only a few costs that factor into daily operations. Personally, I do not believe that very many out-ofstate travelers or Arizona residents will make a trek to the town of Superior to visit its suggested mining museum, see the works of art or pay homage to a mining memorial - no offense intended, please. I have worked at museums
for more than 20 years and know that visitors want to come away with an “experience” not merely sightseeing. May I suggest to the powers that be, please visit the New Mexico Mining Museum website of Grants, NM, particularly Yelp. www.go-newmexico.com/New-MexicoMining-Museum and https://www.yelp.com/biz/newmexico-mining-museum If you want to draw visitors and share an immense part of Arizona history, consider opening a museum near the actual mining site so visitors can get a first-hand experience and be blown away by the way it truly was. You will have visitors all year long who will bring business
to the town of Superior. I do not know of any mining town in Arizona who offers anything close to what NM Mining Museum offers in the way of an actual experience. Parents will bring their children, grandparents will share their knowledge, tourism will draw attention to an area that is overflowing with history from the time of Geronimo to the days when copper was king in the great Southwest. As it is stated everyday, now is the time to “think outside the box.” From a former Superiorite of 1960-70, /s/ Isaac Curley
First Things First honors Pinal Champion for Young Children First Things First recognizes Karen Bradley as a 2018 First Things First Champion for Young Children. The award is given to local champions who actively volunteer their time to raise public awareness of the importance of early childhood development and health. Champions spend a significant amount of time volunteering with FTF and building public awareness about the importance of early childhood issues. Bradley, who lives in San Tan Valley, is the founder and volunteer parent educator with the homebased House of Timothy pregnancy program for the past five years. She
also volunteers with New Mercies Pregnancy Center with Compassion Care Center in San Tan Valley. These agencies provide support to families, starting with pregnancy, through labor and into early childhood. Helping families be aware of the importance of early childhood is important to her. “The experiences, both positive and negative, a child has during their first few years create the foundation that the rest of their lives are built upon,” she said. “Providing optimal experiences through early childhood development, and focusing on their physical and mental well-being, will get
children off to the best start possible.” Bradley engaged in awareness-raising efforts such as: • Teaching the “Mommy and Me” classes to parents and guardians at the Compassion Care Center in San Tan Valley every Wednesday, reinforcing the FTF website as a resource and utilizing FTF tools, such as the playbooks, Read-On Literacy Guides, Kids Basics and grocery pads as part of the curriculum. • Reviewing and distributing the FTF Parent Kit to more than
50 soon-to-be parents or guardians in both English and Spanish through the House of Timothy. • Working with almost two dozen parents to help them understand the importance of early childhood development and health and engaging with their babies before birth, and reading and interacting with them after birth. Bradley covers subjects such as 90 percent of a baby’s brain develops by age 5 and reinforces the importance of reading, playing, and engaging with their infants and toddlers from the start.
• Hosting information tables at church events and homeless groups, engaging parents and providing early childhood information to parents and books/bookmarks to children birth to age 5. She shares FTF materials, such as fact sheets, awareness cards, playbooks, with more than 200 parents and more than 50 children throughout the San Tan Continued on page 9

Arrival of monsoon signals easing of fire restrictions in Southeast Arizona, but caution still warranted Effective Friday, July 13 at 8 a.m., the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Bureau of Land Management Gila District, all districts of the Coronado National Forest, Saguaro National Park, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Tumacácori National Historical Park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and the San Bernardino, Leslie Canyon and Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuges will lift all fire restrictions in southeastern Arizona. Due to widespread precipitation across the area, additional rain in the weather forecast, and a rise in fuel moistures, it has been determined that the likelihood of wildfire has lessened to the degree that the restrictions can be rescinded. Visitors are reminded to always practice fire safety. • Before going hiking or camping, check with public land management agencies for fire regulations, restrictions or area closures. Metal fire rings or grills should be used where present. Wood placed on a fire should never exceed the size of the grill or fire ring.
• If building a fire on the ground (in areas where permitted), a location should be selected which is away from adjoining or overhanging flammable material, and the ground beneath and around the fire should be cleared of all flammable materials. On windy days fires should be avoided if possible. • If you have a campfire, make sure it is fully extinguished before leaving the area. Fires should be doused with water and dirt and stirred with a shovel until completely cold to the touch. • If you are using a portable stove, make sure the area is clear of grasses and other fine fuels. Prevent stoves from tipping and starting a fire. • Cigarettes should never be thrown out the window of a vehicle. Instead, ashtrays should be used in order to prevent wildfires. • Practice Leave No Trace principles - pack out cigarette butts and burned materials from your camping area. • Never park a vehicle over dead grass; the catalytic converter can ignite the vegetation. • Use caution while discharging a firearm, operating an internal combustion engine, welding, or operating acetylene or other Continued on page 9
Oracle Fire Department and other agencies battled a small wildfire south of Oracle on SR77 earlier this month. The rains are helping prevent more wildfires, but caution is still needed. John Hernandez | Copper Area

There is so much information out there that it’s hard to know what latest trend to believe. It is important to learn techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes: fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear, and frustration; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; appropriate use of medication; and working more effectively with health care providers. In the Healthy Living with Diabetes Workshop sponsored by Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens, participants will meet every Thursday, starting Aug. 9 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for six weeks, at the Superior Senior Center, 360 Main St., Superior. Participants will also make a weekly action plan, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their selfmanagement program. The Healthy Living with Diabetes Workshop is free and each participant in the Workshop will receive a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, and audio relaxation CD. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
