LETTER TO THE EDITOR Kudos to the residents, business owners of Superior \ I’m writing to tell you how impressed I am with the transformation I’ve witnessed in Superior, Arizona over the last few years. As a resident of Phoenix, I often take out of town visitors there as well as take day trips with my family and friends. In the last few years I have noticed a significant improvement in Superior - downtown shops and galleries are open and interesting, restaurants and
coffee houses are welcoming, and the colorful murals on the buildings give the town a wonderful and spirited atmosphere. Just to name a few activities we’ve enjoyed…walking the Superior Home Tour, taking in the Mining Festival, purchasing freshly roasted Hatch chiles at the local grocery store, shopping at Random Boutique and hiking Picket Post Mountain trails. I am embarrassed
to say I haven’t been to the world renowned Boyce Thompson Arboretum, but it is on my list for the next trip. Bravo to the residents of Superior for improving their town, being proud of their home and sharing it with others! /s/ Jill Anderson Scottsdale

Panthers are popular preseason pick to win 1A State Title
By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun Football teams across the state began practices earlier this week with just over three weeks until the start of the 2018 high school season, The preseason is upon us, which means so are predictions. AZPreps365, the digital media partner of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), recently conducted a Twitter poll, asking, “Which team will win the 1A football conference this season?” The results as of earlier this week are as
follows: Williams – 20% Superior – 39% Mogollon – 11% Other – 30% The Panthers’ combination of talent and experience makes it easy to understand why they’re the vogue choice of voters. Can the poll results prove to be prophetic? “We have big goals, but more importantly, we want to do it the right way,” Panthers head coach Ryan Palmer responded via text to the Superior Sun. “Our emphasis is on team and developing a brotherhood that will last
well beyond a single season. “Family is our slogan this year,” he continued. “Win or lose, we are going to work our butts off every day and try to have some fun doing it.” Williams defeated Superior in last year’s state championship game, but Panthers roster was nary a senior a year ago and returns a core group of dynamic players, including Adam Navarette (So), Jesus Castellanos (Sr), Cedric Mendoza (Sr) and reigning 1A East Region Player of the Year Steven Ybarra (Sr). Ybarra, the Panthers’ quarterback, who also starred on defense at linebacker, appears on the cover of 2018 AIA
Sollenberger Magazine. The southpaw signal-caller figures to be among the best players in the state. Superior opens it season at Mayer on Aug. 17. The Wildcats finished 8 – 2 a year ago, earning the No. 5 seed in the state playoffs, where they were upset by No. 12 Salome, 72 – 42. Kickoff in the season opener for both teams is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Friday Night Lights: 2018 Copper Corridor High School Football Schedule Three of the four teams in the Copper Corridor will open their seasons on Aug. 17, while the other – Hayden – starts the season with a bye week and will play its opener at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf on Aug. 24. A few quick scheduling observations: • Superior, the 1A State Runner-Up a year ago, starts its season with three-straight games against teams that reached the playoffs last season – at Mayer, at Valley Union and vs. Bagdad. In all, the Panthers have five of eight games against teams that made playoff appearances in 2017. • Hayden, which reached the quarterfinals last year, will play four games against
playoff teams from last year, including the two teams that played for the 1A State Championship – Superior and Williams. • Ray, another playoff team from 2017, has three playoff teams from last season on its schedule, including Superior on Senior Night. The Bearcats have nine games scheduled, consequently surrendering their bye week. • San Manuel, which went 6 – 4 last season and just missed the playoffs, plays three games against playoff teams from a year ago – Tempe Prep, Willcox and Yuma Catholic. Three of the Miners’ final four games are on the road, including the final two at Globe and at Miami.

Superior teachers to see 10 percent bump in pay for 2018-19
On July 11, 2018, the Superior Governing Board voted to raise teacher pay 10 percent across the adopted salary schedule for the 2018/2019 school year. This will increase salaries $3,000-$5,000 per teacher depending on education and years of experience. Superior teachers also average $7,000 a year in 301
pay for performance monies. In addition all classified employees received a 50¢/ hour wage increase. Superintendent Steve Estatico stated this was the first step for increasing our salaries and making Superior not only more competitive for teacher recruitment but rewarding our hard-working staff as well.
