Advocates help foster kids reach independence

FLORENCE, AZ - At a time when our country is celebrating its independence, hundreds of kids in Arizona’s foster care system are trying to finds theirs without the guidance and direction that traditionally comes from parents. Teens who enter the foster care system are at a disadvantage when it comes to independence. They are more likely than younger children to be placed in a group home or shelter situation with up to a dozen other youth and limited opportunities for personal growth. This hits hard at a time when most other kids their age are getting ready to drive, graduate high school and date. There are thousands of teens in foster care in Arizona and every six months more than 500 of them reach the age of 18 and head out into the world on their own. The community can help. Studies have shown one caring, consistent adult can have a life-changing impact on a child in foster care. That’s why the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is so important. CASA advocates ensure not only that a child in foster

care has a consistent adult presence but that they have the services and support they need to thrive. CASA advocates are appointed to one case and visit the children involved with that case regularly. They gather vital information which is shared in a court report with the judge who will ultimately make decisions regarding the child’s living situation. Children with a CASA volunteer assigned to them are more likely to receive services and resources; twice as likely to find a safe, permanent home; and half as likely to re-enter the foster care system. Unfortunately very few children get the support of a CASA volunteer. There are approximately 85 CASA volunteers serving children in Pinal County. More people are encouraged to get involved. For more information contact CASA of Pinal County at 520-866-7076 or visit www. CASAofArizona.org. CASA Volunteers: · Volunteers must be at least 21 years old. · Volunteers go through a rigorous screening process

including interviews, reference check, a fingerprint check, and polygraph exam. · Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to one case until its conclusion, typically involving 15-20 hours per month. · Volunteers must complete 30 hours of pre-service training. · CASA volunteers are advocates, not mentors. Their objective is to help the court system determine the best outcome for the child. · CASA volunteers try to build a 360-degree view of the child and his or her surroundings. To do this, they meet with teachers, counselors, physicians, and guardians. · CASA volunteers work to ensure that children are in safe, permanent homes where they can thrive.

ou may have noticed that the building located at 701 US Highway 60 had received a new sign and a paint job. You may have noticed that there are trucks parked in front of the building and some activity going on. What are they selling and who is shopping there? The average consumer probably is not stopping in to buy anything. Unless, that is if you are looking for a huge mining shovel, a crawler system, or custom metal foundry items. Bradken, an Australia based company with a 100-yearold history of being the largest foundry in the world, has opened an office location in Superior. Tyler Hansen the local Sales Manager for Bradken, explained that they picked the Superior location because of the close proximity to most of the major mines in Arizona, which allows them to get to mine sites easily. “Superior is a hub to the Southwest Mining region,” he said. Most of the products that Bradken sells are constructed and made at their foundries in China, Tacoma, Washington, Kansas City and London, Canada. They are then shipped via sea containers to the ports in Los Angeles

The Superior Town Council voted unanimously to hire Ruby Cervantes as the Town Clerk for the Town during their June meeting. Laws in the State of Arizona require every incorporated town and city to have a Town Clerk. The Town Clerk position, is a very important position, the Clerk is required to keep and maintain all official Town minutes and documents for the public record, conduct elections and serve as the Town Treasurer. The position requires appointment by the Town Council. In the absence of a Town Manager, many smaller municipalities will have their Clerk serve as the Manager as well. Prior to Cervantes being appointed by the Town Council, Town Manager, Todd Pryor served as the Town Clerk. The Town of Superior has not had a full-time Town Clerk in many years, meaning that much of the mandatory work of the Clerk has been delegated between the Town Manager, Deputy Town Clerk and other administrative staff. Over the past two years, the Town has encouraged staff to attend trainings and courses to allow them to improve and grow in their positions. Cervantes has been working for the Town of Superior since 2012. She started as an administrative aide then transitioned into a finance role, before her promotion to become the Town Clerk, Cervantes served as the Accounts Payable/Finance Clerk. During her position as Finance

Clerk, she was instrumental in setting up systems and procedures to ensure that internal operations within the Town worked in sync with State Laws and within the needs of Town finance contractors, Colby and Powell along with auditors. Prior to her employment with the Town of Superior she worked as the Office Manager for the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for 22 years. She explained that she is excited for this new chapter in her career with the Town of Superior. “I really enjoy learning new things, and I am excited to put the trainings I have received into practice,” she said. Her long term goal is become an Arizona Certified Municipal Clerk and Elections Officer. In her free time, she enjoys going to karaoke and spending time with her friends and family. With Cervantes, being promoted to Town Clerk, the Town hired a new Accounts Payable/Receivables Clerk. Continued on page 7
