LETTER TO THE EDITOR Judge Bravo announces run for new District 5 JP In the coming days, the voters of the copper communities will elect the District Five Justice of the Peace. Many of you know me as the JP for Superior and Kearny, or perhaps as the previous town magistrate in Hayden or Superior. I’ve presided over countless cases in our small town court rooms, and our local county court houses. I didn’t get acquainted with the Copper Area from the judicial bench, however. Like most of us, I’m from this community, had a career in the copper mine, met and married my wife here, and raised three fine sons in the Copper Basin. My interest in the law started first as a police officer, long before I had the opportunity to spend a dozen years as a JP. In my time as a local policeman, and as a Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputy, I made it my priority to get involved in the community. I was a volunteer fireman, a little league coach, and an instructor at Central Arizona College. Yet, I enjoyed most when I could combine police work with teaching the D.A.R.E. Program in our area schools. Our children’s futures and raising them in a safe environment, continue to matter greatly to me, just as much today as it did then.

For more than 60 years, I’ve been proud of our communities’ work ethic, our commitment to making our towns safe, the effort to keep drugs out, and the spirit of honesty we’ve built with one another throughout the copper area. And so, when a case comes before me in the Justice Court, I bring my life experience and love of our small towns to the job. As a judge, I strive for absolute fairness in the courtroom

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Curtis Stacy announces candidacy for Kearny Council I cannot count the times people have asked Darla and I “why did you move back to Kearny”. It’s a fair question, I mean we could have lived anywhere we wanted; we actually chose to live here. I believe that Darla would agree that it was a real blessing in our lives coming back here, coming back home. We wanted to make sure our kids got to know their grandparents and that they had some of the same experiences that we did growing up. Since coming back, we have been welcomed by everyone; for that we would like to say thank you! Kearny is our home, it always has been; no matter where we lived. We had been gone for more than 25 years, a lot had changed. A lot has stayed the same. I’m old enough to remember what this little town was like when all the stores up-town were full. I got my first baseball glove from a little sporting goods store that used to be right where the OTP is located today. We took school trips to see how the post office and the Copper Basin News functioned, that was back in the days when they set their print using hot wax. I remember what seemed like the whole town showing up to the Little League games and

Mr. Rupert announcing from high atop the “Gila Dome” (his nickname for the little league field). I remember the Circle K and Phelps Ford. I remember Dave McFee before the field was named for him. Lifelong friends were made here, lifelong memories as well; many of them while fishing in the town lake. I guess I remember the town when it was in its golden age, maybe we all remember our home towns with a little more fondness than we deserve? Now when I drive through uptown I see the stores empty and every time it rains those stores that are still in business put out buckets or kids swimming pools to catch water from the leaks in the roof. It saddens me to see this and it makes me want to try to help turn it around. I see the school struggling to graduate more than 30 students. I see many homes struggling to stay maintained, I see many homes sitting vacant in need of a new forever family to care for them. Sadly, I do not see a town that is prospering; I see a town that is struggling. That is not to say that there are not wonderful things happening here. Our little town has so much to offer, we have some of the best views on Earth; at least the parts of

Pinal County Recorder Virginia Ross addresses ballot issue FLORENCE, AZ -- Pinal County Recorder Virginia Ross became aware of a ballot issue for the 2018 Election Primary. This problem affects voters not registered to a recognized party that are on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL). Arizona law allows non-affiliated voters on the PEVL to select a ballot from a recognized party if they choose to vote in the Primary and receive a ballot by mail. In this instance, the voter system retained the ballot selection of voters from the 2016 Election Primary and sent the voter their previous choice unless they had contacted us in this election cycle with their current choice. “We learned of this problem from the voters calling in stating they had not selected a ballot to be mailed to them.” After researching the problem, we found the error occurred as a result of an invalid system program to purge

voter selection after the 2016 Primary Election. This issue affects two other counties. Recorder Ross has been in touch with the Recorders from the other affected counties to discuss the issue. “We are all very disappointed in the current vendor’s lack of support and look forward to a new voter registration system being implemented in 2019 with a new vendor as the current system is clearly outdated.” As Pinal had the most voters affected by this ballot issue problem, the following actions are recommended; voters can vote the ballot they received, discard the ballot or contact us for a different party ballot if they so choose. The Secretary of State office sent a file to Pinal County in which we are assessing the number of voters affected by this system error. The last day to request a ballot by mail is August 17th, 2018.

it that I have seen. We have natural resources all around us that other people would love to share in, hikes, river tubing, ATV rides, horseback rides, jeep trails; it’s all here. We can use those resources and bring people to our little town, we can work to fix those stores and fill them back up. We can make or encourage strategic investments in our town that will entice new people and new families to come here to live. Our property values could rise, our school could grow. Our kids could have new opportunities that don’t require them to move away. Kearny could have a renaissance if we choose that for our future. Or we can just keep things the way they are. Certainly, I cannot say I have all the answers, that’s not really how government in the United States is supposed to work anyway. What I can say, is should you choose to trust me with your vote as a council member; I would work to see our town improved each and every day. I would work to see it grow and prosper for all its citizens. I would work to see that Kearny’s Golden Age is well ahead of us, not what I remember. I’ve seen it done before in small towns across the country, we certainly can do it here as well. I ask for your vote as council member and maybe together we can make a difference. /s/ Curtis Stacy

Kearny’s Kerfuffle

he recent kerfuffle with the water filtration plant in Kearny turned out to have a simple explanation: lightning struck the plant. A part had to be ordered, and it took a while to arrive. Thank you, Town of Kearny, for working as quickly as possible. During the time the filtration was down, the water was still fully treated (except for mineral particles) and was completely safe to drink. Dr. James Celis, whose dental practice was severely affected by the collapse of the roof during a Kearny rainstorm, is making it known that he fully intends to resume his practice. It’s a bit complicated because he needs to find a temporary setup and he still has to deal with insurance details. He is a great dentist with real love for the people of the Copper Basin. I’m glad that he wants to move through this disruption and be available to us again. Here’s hoping that the management of the building might take advantage of the needed repair to improve conditions for the other businesses renting from them. This Thursday (August 16) the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a potluck and mixer in the banquet room of the General Kearny Inn at 6 p.m. This is a good opportunity for local businesses to learn about the work of the chamber and make their own needs known. The chamber wants to be responsive to businesses in the area. As businesses and individuals join the chamber, it will grow in its ability to respond. Come see for yourself. On Friday, August 17, food will be distributed for seniors (60 years or older) on fixed incomes. The truck will arrive early in the morning and local volunteers will unload it and get it ready. The location is the side entrance at the back end of the old courthouse (the Kelly Haddad Center). The volunteers hope to begin handing out food by 8 a.m. or even earlier, and will continue the distribution until 1 p.m. This distribution requires an annual sign up. After that, seniors who have a hard time physically coming for the food may

designate another person to get the food for them. Please bring proof of residence and a photo ID when you sign up. If you can’t get out of the car to sign up, the registrar will come out to sign you up. Kearny resident Mike Dinwiddie will gladly answer any questions. This service is for the whole Copper Basin, sponsored by The United Food Bank. The primary election will be Tuesday, August 28. This election is the primary for the Democratic and Republican parties as well as the primary for non-partisan offices such as Mayor and Council. Independents may vote in the primary, but must participate by using party ballots. Note: The primary for non-partisan offices is on both the Democratic and Republican ballots. In Arizona, the primary election does, in effect, become the determinant in the General Election on November 6. This is why the primary is so important. Registration for the primary is now closed, but there is still time to register for the general vote in November. That’s the story! Watch out while driving as the schools are now in session, be sure to exercise your voting privilege, patronize our local businesses, and don’t forget to take your keys when you go to the post office.

Court Appointed Special Advocates needed throughout Gila County

The CASA of Gila County program is in dire need of additional volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates for children in Gila County communities. Currently, there are eighty children in out of home care in Gila County. This means there are eighty children who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care, kinship care, or a group home. These children were removed from the home they know due to abuse or neglect at absolutely no fault of their own. Actively, the CASA of Gila County program has 11 Court Appointed Special Advocates serving twenty children ranging from newborns to teenagers. That means that we are unable to serve sixty children in Gila County. Our program goal is “an advocate for every child” and we need members of our community to step up to make this goal happen!

As a Court Appointed Special Advocate, the volunteer gets to know a child and their needs. Volunteers meet with the child, the child’s current caregiver, therapists, teachers, and others who directly interact with the child. The CASA learns what is currently going on in the child’s life and forms an objective opinion about what is in that child’s best interest. That opinion is then shared with the judge who oversees the child’s case while they are involved in a dependency case. This gives the judge an opportunity to learn more about what is happening in this child’s day to day life and assists in sharing information with the whole team on what will best serve this child and their future. A volunteer does not need to have experience in social work or law. The CASA of Gila County will train advocates and provide ongoing support throughout the case.

For more information on what a CASA does and how you can be a part of making the difference visit www. CASAofGilaCounty.org today!

The

Before you dig!

one simple call to 811 gets underground utility-owned lines marked for free. Violent summer storm wreaks havoc, no injuries reported

A violent summer storm last week blew through the Copper Corridor, wreaking havoc from San Manuel to Kearny. Copper Area News first reported on the storm through its social media site, facebook.com/copperarea. The storm broke over San Manuel at just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The storm dropped rain and hail, driven by powerful winds. Washes in the area quickly filled and overflowed causing flash flooding and closing the highway. The power was knocked out for two hours in San Manuel. Copper Area posted a video of the storm on Facebook and invited our readers to share their videos and photos of the storm. What ensued was a map of the storm as it made its way through the Copper Corridor. Rain and flooding in Mammoth and then Dudleyville. Wind and more rain in Winkelman and Hayden. In Kearny, through wasn’t much rain, but the wind was strong enough to turn over this unoccupied (thankfully) mobile home in the Saguaro Trailer Park. This park seems to have borne the brunt of the storm. James Carnes | CBN

New AGF Commission Chair promises to remember rural Arizonans As the newly-appointed Chairman of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission, I want to give the people of rural Arizona a stronger voice in the conservation of wildlife. As a longtime resident of rural Arizona, I’m proud to represent all the small-town residents, farmers, ranchers and families who live throughout the less-populated areas of our state. Too often, our voices are drowned out by our big city neighbors, and it will be my goal to make sure we are all heard. Those of us in rural Arizona are fortunate to live every day with nature’s beauty all around us. Many of us grew up with the family traditions of hunting and fishing, and we’re keeping them alive by passing our outdoor skills, knowledge and ethics on to? the next generations. Hunting and fishing keep us close to the land and give us a better understanding of how humans fit into the natural scheme of things. They also are a great way to supply your family

with good quality, locally-sourced, healthy food. There are also rural Arizonans who don’t hunt or fish, but they share our love of wildlife and wild places. They appreciate the work the Arizona Game and Fish Department does to keep wildlife plentiful by improving habitat, catching poachers, keeping wildlife migration corridors open, protecting endangered and threatened species, and helping sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. They understand and agree with our mission to “conserve and protect.” No matter which group you fall into, there’s another important aspect to hunting and fishing you might not have thought about: it’s also an economic bonanza for Arizona’s rural communities. When hunters and anglers come to rural Arizona communities, they do more than buy a burger and gas up. Sportsmen and women also come to town to buy groceries, ammo, fishing tackle and bait. They fill tables at restaurants and beds in hotels, and visit our night spots. Their cars, boats, OHVs and trailers often need mechanical repairs, or an unfortunate injury might require a visit to our urgent care centers and hospitals. They buy maps, hire guide services, rent cabins, purchase camping gear — in general, the sporting community

provides an amazing windfall of cash for rural Arizona. In 2016, the last year for which estimates are available, hunters and anglers spent an estimated $1.2 billion on purchases related to outdoor recreation in Arizona, about twice the economic impact of Cactus League Spring Training baseball. Hunters and anglers support some 18,200 jobs, generating $699 million in salaries and wages, and James S. Zieler AZGFD $131 million in state and Commission Chair local taxes. Much of that money is spent in — and stays in — our rural communities. The combined revenues from hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities make recreation one of Arizona’s biggest industries ($21.2 billion annually). We small-town Arizonans might not realize it, but that Continued on page 14

First Things First honors Pinal Champion for Young Children

First Things First recognizes Karen Bradley as a 2018 First Things First Champion for Young Children. The award is given to local champions who actively volunteer their time to raise public awareness of the importance of early childhood development and health. Champions spend a significant amount of time volunteering with FTF and building public awareness about the importance of early childhood issues. Bradley, who lives in San Tan Valley, is the founder and volunteer parent educator with the home-based House of Timothy pregnancy program for the past five years. She also volunteers with New Mercies Pregnancy Center with Compassion Care Center in San Tan Valley. These agencies provide support to families, starting with pregnancy, through labor and into early childhood. Helping families be aware of the importance of early childhood is important to her. “The experiences, both positive and negative, a child has during their first few years create the foundation that the rest of their lives are built upon,” she said. “Providing optimal experiences through early childhood development, and focusing on their physical and mental well-being, will get children off to the best start possible.” Bradley engaged in awareness-raising efforts such as: • Teaching the “Mommy and Me” classes to parents and guardians at the Compassion Care Center in San Tan Valley every Wednesday, reinforcing the FTF website as a resource and utilizing FTF tools, such as the playbooks, Read-On Literacy Guides, Kids Basics and grocery pads as part of the curriculum. • Reviewing and distributing the FTF Parent Kit to more than 50 soon-to-be parents or guardians in both English and Spanish through the House of Timothy. • Working with almost two dozen parents to help them
