Grant later married Frankie Gillette and became a father to another daughter, Jodi Denton Tomerlin. Grant had eight grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren who all love their “Cowboy Grandpa”. Grant has many family members and many friends who will miss him dearly. Grant loved all of his daughters greatly. Carrie helped him with his medical needs and had him up and dancing after some knee treatments. The last nine months of his life Grant spent in Kearny living with his daughter Carlene. Together they went on many adventures like visiting where he was born and baptized, and snake hunting. Katherine took him fishing often, he loved to fish and loved it even more with her. Jodi visited him often and helped him with all of his paperwork, they enjoyed reminiscing of old times and future plans. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with them Grant’s true love was the Rodeo and Working Ranches. He roped and rode until one year before his death. Grant was a true Cowboy and was honored at “Night Of The Cowboy” in 2016. Grant has won many saddles, belt
buckles, and truly enjoyed teaching other cowboys to rope and ride. Many of these men still remember all of his knowledge and appreciate his wisdom that he passed on to them. His favorite event was team roping and traveled many places to compete. He also worked on many ranches and felt of that as real Cowboying. Please join his family and friends to celebrate his life Aug. 11. Viewing will be at 9 a.m. and Services at 10 a.m. at the Kearny, Arizona, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 200 Hammond Dr. The service will be followed by grave side services. hree months from now, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending World War I, “the war to end all wars, will be marked. When I was seven years old and looking forward to trick or treating on Halloween, my grandmother offered me the use of the costume my father wore at the age of seven. It was a realistic U.S. Army uniform, complete with leggings, all the buttons, and the cap. My father wore it out to ask for candy just a few days before the war was ended. As I went to all the houses in my own town, many people called me inside for a better look at my costume. Some of them were veterans of World War I, some of World War II. The Korean War was still in progress. At my age, I had little concept of war and certainly no concept of death. I started to learn about death when I attended the funeral of Jim Mahone, a Hualapai veteran and Seligman resident who served under
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Baby Jar Glue As summer is ready to turn to fall, most of us here in Arizona are ready for the cooler weather. The children are heading back to school and the routine of homework, projects and being back with friends. No one is more excited than mom! Today back to school can be fun, shopping for new clothes, a new back pack, even maybe a new iPhone! (How things have changed!) I remember growing up dreading going back to school. Most of the kids in my class came back to school with new clothes, school supplies and a new lunch box. What I remember is going back to school in tennis shoes with holes in them. There were seven of us kids in our family. My parents did not have money to buy all of us new shoes at the same time! I had hand-me-down clothes, which was not fun for a boy with four older sisters! The teacher would give us a list of supplies: two pencils, a box of crayons, wide lined paper and a bottle of glue. My
mother was very creative; I got a baby jar with glue made from flour and water. I could have died! On top of that, I brought my lunch in a brown paper bag, while the other kids had Superman lunch boxes! I cringe every time I see a brown paper bag to this day! Today, here in Arizona, 25% of all our children live under the poverty level. At Family First in our service area over 50% of our children live under that level! To help out our local kids, at Family First every year we have a “Back to School Supplies Drive. We are asking for backpacks, paper, pencils, pens and folders so our kids can have the supplies they need for the school year. Let’s join together and make back to school a fun time for our kids! Thank you! School supplies can be dropped off at either our Oracle or Winkelman center during the month of August. General Crook in the Apache Wars. A volley of rifle shots shattered the respectful silence of the people, and the bugle sounded Taps. I will never forget that day. The public schools of the Copper Basin are now in session. All last week the teachers, administrators and staff worked together and individually to have everything in readiness. The people of Church of the Good Shepherd in Kearny served a meal in both Kearny and Hayden/ Winkelman to demonstrate support for the educators in their special work. This year, for the first time, Ray Schools will serve a free breakfast for all students Monday through Thursday. The breakfasts for Pre-K through 6th grade begin at 7:30 a.m. and 7th grades through High School will be served at 7:45 a.m. All the people serving the meals are happy with this development. Ray Schools are requesting that all parents of school children mark their calendars for Thursday, Aug. 16, for the school Open House. A celebratory cookout will be held in the high school courtyard at 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers sought for Sheriff’s HUMV program The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is looking for professional volunteers to provide services to veterans in our HUMV unit. In November the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center launched Housing Unit for Military Veterans or HUMV. Any individual who is booked into our jail will get their veterans status verified through Veterans Affairs. If they are a veteran, they can opt to join our veterans unit. This unit will consist of veterans from different branches of the military. These inmates will have access to mentors, councilors and educational opportunities that will help them once they are released. The mentorship program continues once veterans are released to ensure they get the services they need. “The idea is to return these inmates back to the best versions of themselves. We want to teach them coping mechanisms and life skills that will give them the foundation they need once they leave our facility,” said Chief Matthew Hedrick, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. This program is modeled after the HUMV program created by Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office launched its program in January 2016, and it is open to both pretrial and sentenced inmates who have served at home or abroad. The program is situated in a unit reminiscent
of a military barracks and features programming specific to the needs of military veterans. The results have been extremely positive, dramatically reducing the recidivism rates of veterans. Since its inception, 165 individuals have gone through the unit. Among the 111 men who spent a minimum of 30 days in HUMV, the reconviction rate is in the single digits. “Why reinvent the wheel? The program has seen great success in Middlesex County, so I wanted to bring it here. At some point, we will be able to expand the program opportunities to other inmates to help reduce recidivism across the board,” said Sheriff Mark Lamb, Pinal County. Many of our HUMV inmates have

Expectations are high for Ray football By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News
After reaching the quarterfinals in the state playoffs for the first time in three seasons a year ago, the Ray football team expects to make a deeper run in 2018. The Bearcats, who are ranked as high as No. 6 in one preseason ranking, finished 6 – 4 last season, including 2 – 2 in the 1A
East Region, which placed the Cats third in a region that had four teams qualify for the playoffs. Three seniors and a pair of juniors are among the top returning players, led by senior quarterback Jaden Pace. Dakota Willis and Spencer Bryce, also seniors, and junior Eric Manriquez and Julian Becerra also figure to be key contributors this season.
The Cats’ strength will be their speed and work ethic, which will be especially important considering there are only 22 players on the roster. “We have a small group this year,” Ray assistant coach Jimmy Fessenden recently told Copper Basin News. “Keeping grades up, which should always be the case, and staying healthy is key.” The experience of competing in the playoffs
last year, which was the first time for many of the Bearcats’ players, will benefit the team as it attempts to reach its goal of a state title. “We gained a little bit of experience last year by making the playoffs,” Fessenden said. “We expect to be back this year and improve on our success.” Ray opens its season at home against Duncan on Aug. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hayden football wants to build on recent success By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Hayden football enters the 2018 looking to reach the state playoffs for a third-consecutive year. The Lobos went eight-straight seasons (2008-15) without reaching the playoffs before ending the drought in 2016. The question now is, can they continue the success? “(Our coaching staff) has high
expectations,” Hayden head coach John Estrada wrote in an email. “It really comes down to how bad the players want it. We need to work out some team issues. If that happens we can be successful. If things remain the same as the first two weeks, it can be a long season.” Hayden returns 11 starters from a year ago – five on offense and six on defense – lead running backs Joel Rodriguez and Omar Lopez, both seniors. Noah Monroy, Robert Manriquez, Jorge Rodriguez and
www.centralaz.edu
Peter Kame are among the other top returning players. Junior Gilberto Carmelo takes over as the starting quarterback, replacing Mario Mariscal, who graduated. “Our strengths will be our seasoned players,” Estrada said. “They know our offensive and defensive packages. They just need to work out some issues, believe
in themselves, perform, and have fun.” What are they keys to success on Friday nights? “We need to come to practice, work extra hard, and learn the technique being shown to them,” Estrada answered. Hayden opens its season on the road at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf on Aug. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Gila County residents: voice your opinion and get a free lunch, too
How often does someone ask your opinion – and also offer that rarest of rarities: a free lunch? Hayden and Winkelman residents who care about their community and are available Aug. 14 (Tuesday) are encouraged to visit the Hayden Senior Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. And share your thoughts as part of a county-wide needs assessment survey launched by Gila County Community Services Department. Please RSVP by phone call to 928-425-7631 so organizers can prearrange enough lunches for Hayden/Winkelman participants. You aren’t available next Tuesday to attend in person over the lunch hour? Share your opinion online or in print – survey
forms are online, also available at county offices and local libraries. Surveys are anonymous. “Everyone in Gila County has the opportunity to give us their opinions and thoughts about employment, housing, health care, quality of life – and barriers they have experience with obtaining basic needs,” said Gila County Community Services Dorine Prine. “We genuinely want as wide a range of opinions as we can gather about life here in Gila County.” The web-based survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Pinal County Attorney’s Office has gone to the dogs Recently, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office began production on a video featuring the newest member of their staff, Pilot: a nationally certified Service Animal that has been trained and approved to work in all facilities and in public. Debbie Boyle, his caregiver and handler, has had him for two-and-a-half years and is a Victim Advocate in the Victim Services Division.Pilot is a member of Court House Dogs Foundation and has met all standards set by Assistance Dogs International. He will accompany victims in the courtroom, thereby alleviating fear and anxiety experienced in such a setting. Pinal County Attorney, Kent Volkmer, said, ““Science has proven that allowing individuals in high stress situations to interact with facility animals can help to provide comfort, decrease anxiety and release endorphins that have a calming effect. Science has also shown the simple act of petting an animal produces an automatic relaxation response.” Pilot will be available for both children and adults. He has been meeting the judges in Pinal County and has been warmly welcomed.
