RUSD seeks $3 million in bonding authority to make long overdue upgrades in schools By James J. Hodl Copper Basin News
Seeking funding to make long-delayed school infrastructure and equipment improvements, the Ray Unified School District (RUSD) will ask voters for approval to issue bonds up to $3 million total in
OBITUARY Edna Naomi Norris Edna Naomi Norris, born Jan. 23, 1932 in Challis, Idaho, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017 in Kearny, at the age of 85. November. If approved, homeowners could see their property taxes increase by up to $0.615 per $100 assessed valuation, or $492 a year on an $80,000 home. “RUSD has so many needs that we need to address, which is why we are seeking the bond issue,” said Superintendent Curt Cook. “Many of these needs we have postponed addressing due to the decline of capital funding from the state.” A major need is for funding to expand technical and vocational education at the high school, which voters approved last year. New courses planned by RUSD will cover welding, carpentry, web development and cosmetology. Among other needs cited by Cook include new buses and vans to get students to class, and new security cameras. The sidewalks and parking lots on school property need repaving, and netting at the elementary school, shredded by recent monsoons, needs to be replaced so students can have lunch outside. RUSD also needs to update its computer equipment (some up to seven years old) used by students, especially with Arizona putting increased emphasis on online testing. “The last time voters approved a RUSD bond issue was in 2001. Some of those funds were used to build a track for competitive track and field events. But so much time as elapsed that the track now needs to be replaced,” Cook said.

“I’m sure residents of the district know that RUSD has been conservative with funding over the years and that we have stretched the budget and done more with less revenue than most other districts. But the need to upgrade is overdue,” he added. Two Kearny boys turn 4-H project into a lesson in heart By Angelina Bauer Copper Basin News When Hunter (12) and Jason Day (9) started their 4-H Club project last year, they probably did not realize the impact they would have on the community and the lives of two other boys. However, the result was nothing short of fantastic. The brothers raised $5,700 – each – for Jaden Mayle and Matthew York, two local boys who were diagnosed with cancer. It all started with two little pigs and one big dream. Hunter is a veteran 4-H Club member with four years under his belt and this was Jason’s first year and first project. They both decided to raise pigs as they both had a lot of experience in that area. Seeing this as a great opportunity to help their best friends in need, Hunter and Jason both wanted to give their money to their friends and wrote letters to potential buyers to ensure that everyone knew the money gained from the sale of these pigs would go to a good cause. In March, both boys went to the Pinal County Fair to show off and sell their pigs. The response was more than this family
could have expected. “We didn’t expect to raise this much money,” Melissa Day, the boys’ mother, told Copper Basin News. “We were so proud and crying at the auction. It was heartwarming to see people come together like that.” The pigs were bought by Connie and Charlie Goff with Goff and Goff Ltd. Partnership in Oracle. They were sold for $5,000 each, with an added $1,400 in separate donations. In his thank you letter to Connie and Charlie Goff, Hunter states that he learned a lot from this experience and “the more you give, the more you have. This is why I am giving all of the proceeds to my friend. It feels good to give to people who need it more than I do. Next year, I will donate my money again.” Jason had similar sentiments in his own thank you letter, thanking the pair for “helping my friend. I can’t wait until he can play with me again like he used to.” With a little heart and a lot of hard work, Hunter and Jason Day helped their friends more than anyone could ever imagine. It just goes to show that when someone, even

Accentuating the Positive
S
o, what’s a town to do in this day and age? The economists talk about how Arizona has come back from the recession of a few years ago, but there’s little evidence for that in the towns of the Copper Corridor. Our median incomes continue to drop. Our homes show little growth in value, or even show a reduction. And we’re getting older. Obituaries are our stock in trade rather than birth notices. Well, I woke up this morning and thought to myself, “Today is the day to have a good day.” I started with my own good news that I can see. I had eye surgery a few days ago and all went well. Colors are real again! I worked outdoors with my plants, I called a few friends, and then drove to Superior to visit the art showing at the Wild Cow Gallery. I ran across friends there, and we talked for hours. One of them suggested that my column might focus on economic development projects which are coming about. That got me thinking about the fact that sometimes we need to feel positive in order to accomplish other positive things. The first paragraph of this column is a litany of woes, of the things that are going wrong. But changing a bad situation into a good one cannot be changed by saying, “The town used to be better off,” no matter how many times we say it. We need positive vision, good
heartedness, and the willingness to work with each other. Here’s a litany of some good things to think about: – Copper is now running $2.85 per pound. This is not even close to the boom price five years ago, when copper couldn’t be produced quickly enough, but today’s price is part of a slow climb over the previous two years. – The new Apache Sky Casino near Dudleyville is open for business. There are full days and slow days, but anything new begins with a measure of risk. The good news is that the new casino is following the wise course of its sister near Globe, by starting small and pacing itself with a mind toward growth. Many people from the San Carlos Reservation are joined by people from our towns in working there, a boon for all of us. – The Whistlestop Café has opened in Kearny. The Sunny 77 Café has opened in Mammoth. These new cafes are providing menu variety, not competition to existing eateries, and bring new jobs. – Resolution Copper has four positions to fill and has them posted on ResolutionCopper.com/jobs/. Some positions with contractors for Resolution are also posted there. – The rains have been good. The desert is beautiful, and the waters of San Carlos Lake are rising. I bet you can make a list of more good things. So, what’s

Ray Schools welcome new teachers By Jennifer Carnes Copper Basin News Students and teachers alike are heading back to school. For Ray School District there are four new faculty members added to the roster. Samuel Colton Sr. will be heading up the new CVIT welding program as well as teaching woods at the senior high school. Colton has an AAS Welding Technology, Technical Certificate Manufacturing Technology and a BA degree in Sociology. He chose teaching “as an opportunity to pay forward to others for the gift of a good education from my teachers.” He would like to see Ray High School recognized statewide as the model school for career technical education.
Colton’s wife is Carmen and the couple has four adult children, Samuel Jr., Israel, Kristina and Carolina. Michael Napientek will be taking over direction of the music and band department for grades 5 through 12. The transplant from the suburbs of Chicago holds a bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College in Music and Business Administration. His career goals are to spark the passion and magic of music in as many students as possible. “I chose to teach after going on a study abroad trip to Jamaica where we taught music in the schools,” Napientek told the Copper Basin News. “Since then, I have been back 8 times and still go every June and adjudicate the Western Jamaica
International Music Festival.” He enjoys riding his bike, listening to music, hiking and “watching my Chicago White Sox.” And he loves Corvettes! Christopher Ervin joins the faculty and administration at Ray Sr. High School as the assistant principal and athletic director. He will be teaching Earth Science, Forensic Science and Chemistry. He has been an educator since 2004, teaching science and coaching. He holds two undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Geology and two master’s degrees in secondary education and supervision. Ervin chose a career in teaching because, “I like to help bring understanding to young minds,” he said. His goal is to become an administrator.
Ervin is single and has three adult sons. He lists his hobbies as all sorts of outside activities including golf, paddling and hiking. Rachel Mawson will be teaching mathematics at the senior high school. She received her BS in Mathematics from Arizona State University and her M.Ed. in teaching and teacher education from the University of Arizona. “My teachers pushed me out of a small town,” Mawson said, “and made me believe I could do anything and I wanted to return the favor. Also, I love coaching.” Her career goals are simple: to get better every day. She lists painting, video games, volleyball, softball and driving as her hobbies. Welcome to all the new teachers.

Project Harvest teaching the community
Are you concerned about the environment? Do you yearn to make a positive impact to your environment but are not sure where to start? Or, do you make successful strides but simply want to go further on your journey to go green? Hayden-Winkelman is one of three areas in Arizona chosen to participate in Project Harvest through the University of Arizona College of Soil, Water and Environmental Science. The other two areas where training has already occurred are Globe-Miami and Dewey-Humboldt. The offered training, which was held in the Hayden-Winkelman area on July 25 - 27, isn’t required to participate in Project Harvest. A quick online trip to projectharvest.arizona. edu will allow you to sign up. Participation begins with training, when it is available and if it is desired, in how to collect samples of water, soil, and vegetable samples from your garden for environmental analysis. During training, you will meet others in your community who are of a similar mind. From there, you go on to collect the samples and conduct experiments at home. Participants will be given a kit filled with tools needed to sample your harvested water,
soil and/or vegetables. You will work with traditional laboratory supplies and DIY gear. Sampling and testing began in the winter of 2017 and will run through the winter of 2020. Tests will be run to determine the concentration of potential contaminants in environmental samples. Sample testing will primarily occur at the University of Arizona, but, sometimes, in your own backyard. Beginning in 2020 through 2021, data sharing will take place. You will receive a report on environmental results and gather with community members and researchers to discuss results and, if necessary, ways to reduce your exposure to pollutants. Regarding Project Harvest, Professor Ramirez-Andreotta said, “The goal of the project is to understand the fate and transportation of potential pollutants in harvested water and how these possible pollutants might impact soil, plant and human health. Evaluate the learning outcomes of a citizen science and communityengaged approach to research. I have been working with Jeff Gregorich for almost a year on this project.” Topics of the workshop held late last month included climate change, health and environmental quality. Participants learned
The 19 teachers who completed the Project Harvest Water Harvesting Workshop. how to install a water harvesting system, and were trained in how to collect harvested water, soil, and/or vegetable samples from their gardens for environmental analysis. They also met others in the community who are interested in environmental and food quality. Nineteen teachers went through the three-day training and received certificates of completion. For more information, please contact:

SR 77 to receive pavement rehab FLORENCE – Supervisor Pete Rios wants to relay that the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will be accepting bids for a partial “Pavement Rehabilitation Project for State Route 77 on August 25, 2017. The rehabilitation project will begin at MP (mile marker) 113.7 approximately 1 mile south of the Town of Mammoth city limits and continues to milepost 120.4, approximately 3 miles south of the Aravaipa Bridge. Supervisor Rios states the project scope is to replace the existing pavement that has deteriorated in recent years creating a
rough driving surface. “Many of you have contacted my office to voice your concern on the dangerous road conditions. I wish to reiterate that this is a State Highway and not a county road therefore it is not under Pinal County’s jurisdiction. Nevertheless, I will continue to be your liaison and advocate in the area’s best interest.” You may also contact your State Representatives to discuss your concerns on the current road condition. • Representative T.J. Shope (602)-926-3012 • Representative David Cook (602) 926-516 • State Senator Frank Pratt (602) 926-5761
