The last day to register to vote in the upcoming elections is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Early ballots will be mailed on Oct. 10. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. Governor Doug Ducey will face Democratic candidate David Garcia. Arizona will be electing its first female United States Senator as Kirsten Sinema the Democratic candidate will face Martha McSally the Republican contender. Congressional District One, Congressman Tom O’Halleran will run against Republican Wendy Rodgers to keep his seat. For the Copper Corridor, the Legislative District 8 Senate and House of Representative seats will be up for election. Senator Frank Pratt will run against Sharon Girard who won the Democratic spot on the ballot. She is from the Eloy area. Rep. TJ Shope and Rep. David Cook, both Republicans, will be running against Carmen Casillas and Linda Gross – both are Democrats out of Globe. Countywide, one of the biggest contests locally was the race for Justice of the Peace for District 5. With the combination of the JP Courts, Judge Larry Bravo of the Superior/Kearny Court faced Judge Arnold Estrada from the Mammoth/San Manuel Court. With all votes cast, the Democratic voters of the combined JP District 5 which now spans from Oracle to Superior elected Judge Arnold Estrada; he will face Republican Judge Nancy Discher from the Oracle/SaddleBrooke court.
The combination of the Justice Courts have also called for the consolidation of the Constable Duties. Democrat Christopher Alvarado of Kearny will face Republican Mike Sloan of the San Manuel area for the position of Constable. The Superior Chamber of Commerce has invited the JP, Constable and Legislative District 8 Candidates to their September Luncheon. If you are interested in listening to the candidates and attending the luncheon, please contact Sue Anderson at 602-625-3151. In local municipal elections, races were mostly decided during the September primaries and the local town governments will not need to call for general election runoff races. Kearny: Mayor Debra Sommers will remain as Mayor; she ran unopposed and will serve another two year term. Incumbent council members Rudy Flores, Nancy Hinojos and Daniel Radcliffe were all re-elected. They will be sworn into their next terms in January. Hayden: Councilmember Dean Hetrick ran unopposed for the position of Mayor. Mayor Bobby Smith chose to run for a council seat and was elected to serve a four year term as a Councilmember. This leaves four council seats open in Hayden. Current council members Bernardino Cruz and Thomas Lagunas are expected to apply to be appointed by the Council. This leaves two seats vacant, Continued on page 9

Enroll NOW for Lead Abatement Program in Hayden-Winkelman Area
nrollment in the lead abatement program for Hayden and Winkelman began several weeks ago. Homes and public structures in these towns which were constructed prior to 1978 are available for this lead abatement program, which inspects and tests structures for lead based paint, removes it, and restores the building. I heard last week that enrollment is moving slowly. This surprised me, because lead is poisonous and children are especially sensitive to it. The dangers of lead are well known to citizens here, because lead was emitted from the smelter over the years. Exposure to lead is cumulative, so the longer we live the more the lead accumulates in our bodies. The smelter is much cleaner now, but the lead paint in homes remains a toxic element, becoming even more dangerous as homes age or are remodeled, stirring up lead dust. The program is overseen by Central Arizona Governments, which is a cooperative body assisting towns and cities in developing and overseeing projects in local areas. Central
Arizona governments (CAG) was selected as the Administrator by ASARCO with the approval of the EPA. The Court required a government entity be used precluding private contractors as the Administrator of the project. CAG is a Council of Governments created by the State of Arizona. Money to pay for the program is a result of this settlement, so ASARCO is paying for this program although it does not oversee it. The focus of the program is on the lead paint in buildings. No excavations will be done. Since the money is private, no Federal or State clearances are required. There is no cost to the homeowner at all. There are documents for giving permission to do the lead testing and then for the abatement itself. Both are totally free. Removal of the lead not only improves health, but also increases the value and salability of the home. We know that mining towns have a bad reputation for housing, so certifying that the home is lead free is a real plus.
I said a couple of months ago that I would follow up on this story. I hope that homeowners will take full advantage of this free program. Renters, let your landlord know about this and make your home safe. To participate contact Central Arizona Governments. They are located at 2540 West Apache Trail #108 in Apache Junction 85120, and the phone number is 480-474-9300. The overseer of the project is Alan Urban. On to different things, such as the fact that this Friday, Sept. 14, the ArtUS Group (local painters and pencil artists) starts its fall sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. and going until 3 p.m. The artists gather in Ray Hall of The Church of the Good Shepherd to do their work in the fellowship of other artists. Come and visit to see if this is something you would like. The group will meet every Friday and everyone in the Copper Basin is welcome. The Copper Thimble Quilters, artists in a different way, recently saw many of their members travel to Pinetop for a three-day quilting retreat with quilting artists from the

Southwest. And I didn’t know there was such a thing as a quilting retreat! But it makes sense that people would want to share and learn from others. Let me tell you, our quilters do some of the best work I have seen.

Natural Gas Safety Wherever you live, work, or play. natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas where homes don’t use natural gas. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.
A leak may be present if you: SMELL:
HEAR:
SEE:
a distinct sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.
a hissing or roaring coming from the ground, above-ground pipeline, or natural gas appliance.
dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or plants, or standing water continuously bubbling.
IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK • Exit the area or building immediately. Tell others to evacuate and leave doors open. • From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. • Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. • Don’t turn on or off electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. • Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated (garage) doors. Ray wins secondstraight road game, improving record By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray football team improved to 3 – 1 following last Friday’s 64 – 12 victory at NFL Yet Academy. The win was the Cats’ second-straight one-sided victory on the road. “Our offense and defense both clicked on Friday.” Ray assistant coach Jimmy Fessenden told Copper Basin News. “We were also pleased with the play of our younger kids, who got to see considerable playing time.” Ray rushed for six touchdowns, passed for one, returned a punt for another, and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
The Cats have outscored their last two opponents, 136 – 12. “I think the biggest reason is the team has a good grasp on coach Lechuga’s new offense,” answered Fessenden when asked what’s the biggest reason for the success during the last two games. “They’re more comfortable and confident, and it has shown. Up next: Ray will return home to host El Capitan on Homecoming this Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. “El Capitan has some big running backs that are difficult to bring down,” Fessenden said. Also, this is homecoming week. We don’t want that to be a distraction for the guys.”
You are eligible for a NO-COST lead-based paint inspection and removal of lead hazards in your pre-1978 constructed home or public structure. Participation is voluntary. Sign up NOW! Funds limited, Homes with school-age children are the top priority for this program because their bodies are more sensitive to lead’s damaging effects. To participate in this FREE program contact: Central Arizona Governments (CAG) 2540 W. Apache Trail #108 Apache Junction, Arizona 85120 480-474-9300 • Abatement@cagaz.org

Hayden crushes Babo in home opener By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Hayden football team obviously enjoyed finally playing in front of its own fans as evidenced by last Friday’s lopsided 61 – 0 victory against the visiting Warriors in the Lobos’ home opener. “We did well as a team,” Hayden head coach John Estrada said. “Our young kids got a lot of playing time, which is key to the future of our program.” The win improved the Lobos’ record to 2 – 1. In their two victories, the Lobos have
outscored their opponents, 117 – 8. “Our defensive play executed well,” Estrada said. “Our senior leadership took over and did its job, and we were physical.” Up next: The Lobos will host Arete Prep this Friday. The Chargers, who lost at Superior 72 – 15 last week, will be playing their second-straight road game. “Arete Prep will spread us out,” Estrada said. “They pass the ball well. We’ll need to put pressure on the quarterback and our defensive backs will need to do their jobs.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Chuck Wagon Roundup is our annual fundraiser where we raise a large portion of our yearly budget. We have a BBQ dinner along with a live and silent auction to raise funds to keep our doors open. Throughout the year moms and dads, their children and teens come into our centers, all with different needs. We provide educational
classes for parents, encouragement, along with some material assistance. For young children story time, a story along with crafts, teaching them about colors and letters, basic skills to prepare them for school! For our teens our “Ten for Teens, a program where you can donate $10 a month to sponsor a teen in our mentoring program. Teens are taught office skills, interaction with other teens, and address the issues that face them in our ever changing world. God has blessed Family First with two centers to reach out to families here in rural Arizona. They are in areas where the social service programs have been cut back and the needs are the greatest! What we do benefits moms, dads, children and the whole family. This benefits our community,
ELECTION
making for a stronger community. This makes it a better place for us all! Every fall Family First does a “Back to school supplies drive collecting supplies for our local schools. This past week a mom came in needing diapers for her infant child. She left our center with diapers, backpacks and school supplies for her 3 children. She was excited she didn’t have to use her food money for school supplies, as she did not have enough for both! That is why Family First is here. We are so thankful for all of you and your support these past 14 years, we could not have done it without you! We invite you all to the Chuck Wagon Round-
up on Saturday Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Summer Institute of Linguistics auditorium in Catalina AZ. Go to our website www.familyfirstpcc.org or call our office at 520-896-9545 for tickets and more information. You can also donate an item for our auction. If you are unable to attend this event you can donate through our online to send in a donation. We thank God for you all as you have enabled us to help our community where we live, we are excited as we start a 15th year “helping mothers, youth and families. God bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki Family First Pregnancy Care Center

as Vice Mayor Maria Munoz did not seek re-election and there has been a vacant seat for two years. Officials at the Town of Hayden expect that the council will seek out applications from interested residents to be appointed to those seats. Superior: Mayor Mila Besich-Lira ran unopposed for a four year term as Mayor of Superior. Three council seats were open in Superior: the two incumbent candidates Michael Alonzo and Stephen Estatico both ran unopposed. The Council will take applications from local residents in January for the third seat which is being vacated by Councilmember Gilbert Aguilar. Aguilar did not seek reelection. Winkelman: There were three council seats open for election this year. Three candidates sought election to serve on the Winkelman Town Council. Incumbents Felix Marques and Nolberto Wadell were re-elected and Joe Marin, a new face to the council, was elected. All three will begin their new four year terms in January. Mammoth: At press time, the lead vote getters for the Mammoth Town Council were Ernest Bustamante, Annie Martinez and Rogina Medina. It was still being determined if these candidates received enough votes to avoid a run off election at the general election in November. Arizona state law requires the candidates in municipal elections receive 50% plus one of the votes cast.
