LETTER TO THE EDITOR From Family First Pregnancy Care Center: Frost on the Cactus It’s that time of the year when there is frost on the pumpkin, maybe frost on the cactus here in the southwest desert. Not really frost, but the nights are beginning to cool down a little! We do know that summer is winding down and fall is on its way. It’s a time that we can get outside a little more during the day without cooking! Here at Family First we know its Chuck Wagon Roundup time! You can almost smell the barbeque sauce. The Chuck Wagon Roundup is our annual fundraiser where we raise a large portion of our yearly budget. We have a BBQ dinner along with a live and silent auction to raise funds to keep our doors open. Throughout the year moms and dads, their children and teens come into our centers, all with different needs. We provide educational classes for parents, encouragement, along with some material assistance. For young children story time, a story along with crafts, teaching them about colors and letters, basic skills to prepare them for school! For our teens our “Ten for Teens”, a program where you can donate $10 a month to sponsor a teen in our mentoring program. Teens are taught office skills, interaction with other teens, and address the issues that face them in our ever changing world. God has blessed Family First with two centers to reach out to families here in rural Arizona. They are in areas where the social service programs have been cut back and the needs are the greatest!
What we do benefits moms, dads, children and the whole family. This benefits our community, making for a stronger community. This makes it a better place for us all! Every fall Family First does a “Back to school supplies drive” collecting supplies for our local schools. This past week a mom came in needing diapers for her infant child. She left our center with diapers, backpacks and school supplies for her 3 children. She was excited she didn’t have to use her food money for school supplies, as she did not have enough for both! That is why Family First is here. We are so thankful for all of you and your support these past 14 years, we could not have done it without you! We invite you all to the Chuck Wagon Roundup on Saturday Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Summer Institute of Linguistics auditorium in Catalina AZ. PCSO’s Search & Rescue finds 89-year-old missing in the desert An 89-year-old SaddleBrooke man is back home again after going missing. Ralph Dawson left his SaddleBrooke home around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, with his walking cane. When Dawson did not return home, family members called PCSO for help. PCSO’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team was dispatched to assist in the search. Deputies found a shoe print they believe to belong to Mr. Dawson about a mile from his house. They tracked him until they were confident that they narrowed down the search area
Mammoth Police Report According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Activity listed from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. Dawson was found around 11:00 p.m., roughly a mile and a half away from his home in a desert area. “PSCO has some of the best Search and Rescue trackers in the state. Without their skills of noticing a shoe print and marks left by Mr. Dawson’s cane, this could have been a much different ending. We are lucky to have them,” said Sheriff Mark lamb, Pinal County. PCSO called in Golden Ranch Fire Rescue to assist in carrying the 89-year-old out of the desert area. A PCSO spokesperson said, “We would like to thank our SAR team, our SAR Posse Volunteers, Golden Ranch Fire Rescue and DPS for their assistance in this search.”

General Election
Most of the national news has already begun to focus on the 2020 Presidential Election, almost as if the 2018 Mid-Term elections have been finalized. Voters across Arizona will head to the polls on Tuesday, November 6th to cast their votes for many state wide and local offices. The last day to register to vote in the upcoming elections is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Early ballots will be mailed on Oct. 10. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. Governor Doug Ducey will face Democratic candidate David Garcia. Arizona will be electing its first female United States Senator as Kirsten Sinema the Democratic candidate will face Martha McSally the Republican contender. Congressional District One, Congressman Tom O’Halleran will run against Republican Wendy Rodgers to keep his seat. For the Copper Corridor, the Legislative District 8 Senate and House of Representative seats will be up for election. Senator Frank Pratt will run against Sharon Girard who won the Democratic spot on the ballot. She is from the Eloy area. Rep. TJ Shope and Rep. David Cook, both Republicans, will be running against Carmen Casillas and Linda Gross – both are Democrats out of Globe. Countywide, one of the biggest contests locally was the race for Justice of the Peace for District 5. With the combination of the JP Courts, Judge Larry Bravo of the Superior/Kearny Court faced Judge Arnold Estrada from the Mammoth/San Manuel Court. With all votes cast, the Democratic voters of the combined JP District 5 which now spans from Oracle to Superior elected Judge Arnold Estrada; he
will face Republican Judge Nancy Discher from the Oracle/SaddleBrooke court. The combination of the Justice Courts have also called for the consolidation of the Constable Duties. Democrat Christopher Alvarado of Kearny will face Republican Mike Sloan of the San Manuel area for the position of Constable. The Superior Chamber of Commerce has invited the JP, Constable and Legislative District 8 Candidates to their September Luncheon. In local municipal elections, races were mostly decided during the September primaries and the local town governments will not need to call for general election run-off races. Kearny: Mayor Debra Sommers will remain as Mayor; she ran unopposed and will serve another two year term. Incumbent council members Rudy Flores, Nancy Hinojos and Daniel Radcliffe were all re-elected. They will be sworn into their next terms in January. Hayden: Councilmember Dean Hetrick ran unopposed for the position of Mayor. Mayor Bobby Smith chose to run for a council seat and was elected to serve a four year term as a Councilmember. This leaves four council seats open in Hayden. Current council members Bernardino Cruz and Thomas Lagunas are expected to apply to be appointed by the Council. This

2018: Who will be on the ballot? leaves two seats vacant, as Vice Mayor Maria Munoz did not seek re-election and there has been a vacant seat for two years. Officials at the Town of Hayden expect that the council will seek out applications from interested residents to be appointed to those seats. Superior: Mayor Mila Besich-Lira ran unopposed for a four year term as Mayor
of Superior. Three council seats were open in Superior: the two incumbent candidates Michael Alonzo and Stephen Estatico both ran unopposed. The Council will take applications from local residents in January for the third seat which is being vacated by Councilmember Gilbert Aguilar. Aguilar did not seek re-election. Winkelman: There were three council
seats open for election this year. Three candidates sought election to serve on the Winkelman Town Council. Incumbents Felix Marques and Nolberto Wadell were re-elected and Joe Marin, a new face to the council, was elected. All three will begin their new four year terms in January. Mammoth: At press time, the lead vote
getters for the Mammoth Town Council were Ernest Bustamante, Annie Martinez and Rogina Medina. It was still being determined if these candidates received enough votes to avoid a run off election at the general election in November. Arizona state law requires the candidates in municipal elections receive 50% plus one of the votes cast.
Blessed Sacrament Church to host annual Fiesta Sept. 22 The annual Blessed Sacrament Church Fiesta, for the residents of Mammoth and the Tri-Community, is an event that fosters togetherness while reminding the individual of the importance of human dignity. It is a commemoration of the ringing of church bell by Roman Catholic Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla on Sept. 16, 1810, which began the call to arms that began the Mexican War of Independence. Mixed with the seriousness and memorial qualities is an air of fun, with food, games and more.
This year, the Blessed Sacrament Parish Fiesta will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 122 W. Church Dr., Highway 77 in Mammoth. It will start with a 2 p.m. Blessing of the Booths, followed by Joe Arbizo and Conjunto from 3:30 p.m. through 4 p.m. Ballet Folklorico Del Sol will perform from 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. The Mariachis Corazon de Tucson will perform from 6 p.m. through 8 p.m. and, finally, from 8 p.m. through midnight, Quieres Mas will round out the performances. All are invited to attend.

Darien Apuron won the 200 Freestyle, BaiLee Hill won the 100 Butterfly, and Star Chavez won the 500 Freestyle. The Relay Team of Rianna Estrada, Darien Apuron, BaiLee Hill, and Star Chavez won the 400 Freestyle with a season best time of 5:31.8. Darien Apuron improved her School Record in the 100 Backstroke to a time of 1:06.81. The Boys team won 7 events at the meet. The Boys Medley Relay team of Hunter Hill, Evan Apuron, Jayden Smith and Michael Primero-Predgo won with a time of 2:02.1. Evan Apuron won the 200 Freestyle in School Record Breaking time of 1:55.80, breaking the record of 1:56.39 previously set by Will Newman in 2015. Michael Primero-Predgo won both the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke. Hunter Hill won the 500 Freestyle with a nice time improvement from the previous week. Jayden Smith won the 100 Breaststroke. Evan won the 100 Butterfly. Daniel Garcia, Michael Primero-Predgo, Hunter Hill and Evan Apuron teamed up to win the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 4:17.28. Head Coach Alex Gort is excited about the progress of the team this season. “The Miners did very well at this meet,” he said. “We had many personal best times including a couple School Records. The Relays are starting to look very good. We

Volleyball Roundup: Hayden nets first win of the season Hayden After an 0 – 4 start to their season, the Lady Lobos picked up their first win of the year, defeating Baboquivari last Friday, 3 – 0. Following a 3 – 0 start, the Lady Bearcats suffered their first loss of the season last Friday, as NFL Yet Academy defeated them in straight sets, 3 – 0. San Manuel The Lady Miners went 1 – 1 last week
before losing all three games on Saturday at the Mary Jo Goldey Invitational. In last Tuesday’s 3 – 1 victory at Hayden, senior Ashley Madrid had a team-high four the Miners’ 17 kills in the match. Genesis Dietz and Samantha Waddell had three apiece. Senior libero Samantha Roan led the Miners’ service attack with 16 aces. She also finished with 17 assists. Savana Roan led the team with nine digs. Dietz and Andrea Guerrero had 6 each.
Pinedo finishes first in Miners’ X-Country opener Gilbert Pinedo earned a first-place finish and several other Miners’ runners ran well in their home opener on Aug. 29. Pinedo ran 3.1 miles in 20:05 to win his event. On the girls’ side, Taya Dockum finished
16th, Araceli Curry 9th and Toria Zuzeta was 8th. For the boys, Sean Strand was 15th, Adrian Sierra 13th, and Jose Atrian, Omar Rodriguez and Jesus Diaz, all ran great times, according to San Manuel head coach Judy Rohrer.

A Save Charities and Spay and Neuter Solutions are offering free spay and neuter surgeries. Along with the surgeries, if needed, Animal Crusaders of Arizona is offering vaccines. Lions Club Weekly Bingo The San Pedro Valley Lions Club hosts Bingo every Wednesday night. Bingo starts at 7 p.m., promptly at San Pedro Valley Lions Club, 115 Main St. in Mammoth. As an added incentive, on one of the mid-month game nights, if they get 26-35 players, they will draw one number and the lucky holder will receive their initial purchase price of Bingo cards back; 36-45 players and they draw two numbers; 46 or more they draw three.
