The Perils of Mercury M ercury is a heavy metal found primarily in the crust of the earth in the form of Cinnabar or Vermillion. It is not a normal part of the human body. It is, in fact, known to be toxic to the nerves. So much so, that it is associated with degenerative nervous conditions such as multiple sclerosis. It is what was responsible for the madness of the “Mad Hatter” of Alice in Wonderland. Hatters of the era used a good deal of mercury in their craft. General symptoms of mercury toxicity include chronic irritability, chronic depression, tingling and numbness of the extremities, chronic fatigue, memory loss, unexplained anger and even suicidal thoughts. The two principle ways that we get exposed to mercury is through consumption of fish and from “silver fillings” in our mouths. It is interesting that fish also contain a large

It is also interesting that a new problematic source of mercury is the smoke from crematoriums due to the large numbers of people with “silver fillings”, which actually contain more than 50 percent mercury. Though it has been known for years that mercury is poisonous, it wasn’t until recently that the government took steps to protect citizens by banning its use in public schools. An interesting aside is that over a hundred years ago it was common knowledge that mercury was toxic. In fact, mercury was also known as quicksilver. And, the Germans pronounced it quack-silver, which is the origin of the term “Quack” as applied to someone who practices bad medicine. It has been determined that the amount of mercury in the average dental filling (about a Continued on page 21

Local man involved in finding, returning stolen

household of items at an estate sale from a home in a small town outside of Silver City. Among the items was a painting which they brought back to their store. The entire estate including furniture, other artifacts and the painting was purchased for $2,000. The painting was displayed in their store and some of their regular customers upon viewing it asked them if it was an original de Kooning. David took it upon himself to research Willem de Kooning and came upon an article about the stolen painting from the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Once they believed they may have the stolen painting, there was no hesitation on their part – the partners decided they must do the right thing. “We knew within minutes of finding the article that we had the stolen painting and it needed to go back to the U of A Museum, where it was stolen from,” Buck said. “We ended up hiding the painting in the store bathroom, wrapped in a blanket because it was the only door that locked.” David contacted the University of Arizona Museum of Art and the FBI and told them he believed they had the stolen de Kooning. The University sent their experts to New Mexico and confirmed that the painting was in fact the stolen de Kooning. It was taken back to the University. At the time of the theft, the painting was valued at $400,000. The painting’s value has grown in the intervening years. It is now estimated at well over $100 million. A similar painting from the series was sold for $137.5 million 10 years ago. Rick, David, and Buck were recently honored at the U of A Museum of Art and feted at a private dinner at the Tucson restaurant Café a la C’art. It was a black-tie event and “very cool,” said Buck. The three will be back in Tucson when the U of A Museum of Art displays the painting to the public. At no time were the three men interested in any money or a reward. “Because it was stolen, it had to go home,” said Buck. The men have been getting congratulated and receiving good wishes for their honesty from many who know them and from people on the internet that have read the story, which has been on the news worldwide. The story just appeared on the Sunday edition front page of the New York Times and the Inside Edition television program just called them. The three men have ties to Arizona and the Copper Corridor. They owned the Manzanita Ridge store and Pickle Barrel Antiques & Interiors in Globe for a number

You may have read or heard the story about a valuable stolen painting that was recently found and returned to the University of Arizona Museum of Art. What you may not have heard is that one of the finders is from the Copper Corridor and one of his partners has ties to the Copper Corridor. If you have not read the story, here is a quick overview. The story begins 31 years ago when a painting was stolen from the University of Arizona Museum of Art the day after Thanksgiving in 1985. The painting, Woman-Ochre, was painted by the famous Dutch-American abstract expressionist, Willem de Kooning. It was part of a series of paintings, painted between 1950 and 1955. Kooning died in 1997. This summer, three partners who own Manzanita Ridge Furniture & Antiques in Silver City, New Mexico, Rick Johnson, David Auker and Buck Burns, purchased a

idget Spinners are hand toys thought to help children reduce anxiety and other symptoms of hyperactivity disorder. This idea hasn’t been formally studied but these plastic products are proving to be a distraction in the classroom, and are now banned from many. Exercise, sun exposure and outdoor time have been proven to help with hyperactivity difficulties and relieve depression, and children need to be encouraged to play outside in nature. Gardening, whether it’s tending a single rosebush or growing a full-out family garden, just might be the optimal exercise. It adds to the time we are up and moving, requires varied postures and stretches, and maybe most importantly, it’s done outside. The sunshine received in the garden is crucial for good health, not only for the amazing power of sun-generated Vitamin D, but also for the immediate help it provides to our immune system and our mitochondria, which are our cellular energy factories. Researchers in light therapy (photobiomodulation) consider the vast majority of us to not only lack proper sunlight exposure, but to be “fire-light deficient” to boot, as new science shows the extraordinary value of the infrared wavelengths a fire provides. Other gardening gains include what is called “grounding,” in which loose electrons on the earth’s surface enter the body through bare feet

Weatherization funds now available through CAHRA Community Action Human Resources Agency (CAHRA) has funding to assist eligible low-income homeowners in Pinal County with Weatherization, according to Mary Lou Rosales, Executive Director. Under the Weatherization program, improvements are made by CAHRA to help reduce energy consumption and energy costs. A thorough assessment of the eligible home is performed including diagnostic and blower door testing to determine where the house is losing energy and what can be done to stop the loss. The auditor will also assess health and safety issues that might exist in the home. A test to determine carbon monoxide leakage is also done. Minor repairs are made to make the home safer, more sound and secure. Families are counseled as to changes in their energy use habits, which will complement the work done on the homes, and help promote the conservation of energy. After making the efficiency upgrades, the family could save from 5 to 30% on their energy bill. Based on the results of the home assessment, weatherization repairs may include repair or possible replacement of old cooling and heating systems, repair or replacement of leaky ductwork, insulation, the replacement of old inefficient refrigerators and the
addition of sunscreens. Funding may also be available to assist homeowners with the repair or replacement of non operable appliances and water heaters. Homes needing larger repairs such as roofing, ceilings, floors, window or door replacement, plumbing, electrical or major rehabilitation may not be eligible for the weatherization program. Funding is provided by the Department of Energy and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program through the Arizona Department of Housing. Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project and Southwest Gas Corporation also provide funding for the program. Funding for minor home repairs and appliances is provided by Utility, Repair, Replacement and Deposit funds through Arizona Community Action Agency. CAHRA does not have funding for emergency home repairs or rehabilitation. Eligibility includes: 1) household must be low income, 2) the home must be located in Pinal County and owned by the applicant or be in process of purchasing, 3) applicant must have lived in the home for at least 12 months, 4) mortgage payments and property taxes must be current. An application must be completed and verification of income, home ownership and other documents must be provided.
It’s important to stress that the Weatherization program is not an emergency home repair program and applicants may be placed on a waiting list. For an application or for information call the CAHRA office at 520-466-1112 or toll free 1-877-472-2472 (from long distance areas only) or write to 109 N Sunshine Blvd., Eloy AZ, 85131 ATTN: Weatherization Program.

Lady Miners recover to beat Santa Cruz By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner
After dropping the first set against Santa Cruz on Sept. 5, the San Manuel volleyball team won the next three sets and the match, 3 – 1 (13-25, 25-20, 2522, 25-16). The win was San Manuel’s second of the season, evening the Lady Miners’ record at 2 – 2. “The girls played an outstanding match both offensively and defensively,” San Manuel head coach Patty St. Jeor told the San Manuel Miner. “We are working on playing well as a single unit and the girls are improving each game.” Samantha Roan, Hannah Reidhead,
Andrea Guerrero and Alicia Guerrero were all superb from the service line, according to St. Jeor. The Lady Miners are progressing in the right direction and St. Jeor believes her team will continue to improve as the season moves along. She credits new assistant coach Angelica “Jelly” Zuniga, a San Manuel alum and former Lady Miners’ three-sport star, for part of the team’s success so far. “If mistakes are made, we need to remain positive,” St. Joer said. “We need to eliminate getting down on ourselves, instead we need to pick each other up, which we are improving at.” Up next: Globe at San Manuel on Friday, Sept. 14. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Miner Swimmers lose to Arizona College Prep The Miner Swimmers hosted Arizona College Preparatory School on Thursday, Sept. 7. The Girls team scores were: Arizona College Prep 101 - San Manuel 68. The Boys scores were: Arizona College Prep 125 – San Manuel 20. The Miners posted 20 personal best times in the defeat. Arizona College Prep is one of the better Division III teams in the Arizona. Having fast swimmers come to San Manuel helps measure how good the Miners are this year. The Girls Medley Relay Team of Junior Darien Apuron, Freshman Star Chavez, Junior Gianna Sweeney, and Senior Raya Woods started things off with a win. Gianna went on to win the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. Darien went on to win the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. Five wins would be all that the Miners could get on the day. Things were tough for the Boys team. They were unable to field a relay team and one of boys swam with a cast. Even though the Boys did not win any races, they achieved personal best times in every race they swam. First year swimmer Freshman Alyssa Riekofski was named Dynamite of the Meet. She completed four events (the maximum) at the meet. In every race, Alyssa achieved a personal best time. Despite the scores, the coaches were optimistic about the results. Several of the swimmers looked a little tired, which is normal at this point in the season. The grueling practice schedule will pay off later
in the season. The boys team is expected to be at full strength soon and the 20 personal best times Miner swimmers had
shows continuous improvement week to week. Miner swimmers will travel to Florence

Third straight win for San Manuel: 26-12 over Miami By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel football team won its third-straight game last Friday night, defeating Miami on the road, 26 – 12. “Our kids really stepped and held their own against a team that came out fighting hard at the beginning,” Miners’ head coach Daniel Williams told the San Manuel
Miner. “We started a little slow but picked it up and took charge.” The Miners’ defense got the scoring started when Benny Laguna intercepted a Vandals’ pass and returned it 80 yards for a pick-six. “All of our guys on defense played a great game,” Williams said. Quarterback Caleb Quintero threw a 10-yard touchdown
pass to Diego Sierra. The Miners’ signal caller also rushed for a score. Running back Christian Velasquez ran for 108 yards and a touchdown in the win. “We’re gelling team,” Williams said. “Everyone is getting their opportunity to shine.” Up next: Globe at San Manuel on Friday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Pinal County mom attributes kindergarten success to parenting education program Mid-year of kindergarten at Butterfield Elementary School in Maricopa, 5-year-old Ruby Hoeh’s reading indicators were assessed. She was performing at a first grade level and had a strong foundation to become a successful reader. Her mother Kristy Hoeh attributes much of the success to Ruby’s participation in the Apache Junction Fun Van program at the Maricopa Library. First Things First funds the Apache Junction Library Fun Van to bring the program to parents, caregivers and accompanying young children (age’s birth to 5) that live throughout Pinal County. The Fun Van offers an eight-week program, two-part program consisting of Early Childhood STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) and Raising A Reader. Both parenting education programs teach helpful parenting techniques to improve family communication and encourage cooperation. STEP provides parents with effective discipline strategies that promote self-esteem and mutual respect. While Raising a Reader is designed to foster a love of books by developing a habit of reading with your child, it also teaches parents reading strategies to expand their child’s thinking, promoting language and literacy development. Hoeh signed up for the Fun Van when her daughter
Kristy was just 2 years old and she was pregnant with her son Jimmy. The program staff taught Hoeh how to engage her daughter by asking open-ended questions with the goal of getting the kids to think. “Every week we received a new book to take home and learned about activities kids could do in everyday life that promote reading, text recognition and vocabulary building,” said Hoeh. The parent educator also helped Hoeh work through her daughter’s daily power struggles and meltdowns. “Kristy was feeling frustrated when she first entered our program, said Fun Van Parent Educator Felicia Smith. “Her daughter Ruby had very strong feelings and they were both just trying to get through each day. Hoeh was raised to feel like her feelings were not her own. ‘That’s not how you feel,’ was something she heard regularly at home so she wanted to raise her children to feel comfortable expressing what they were feeling or needing.” For Hoeh, it meant learning to acknowledge her children’s feelings even when she doesn’t approve of how they are expressing them, such as saying, “I love you so I’m not going to argue with you,” and “I see you’re really upset, but it’s not OK to talk to mommy like that.” She also began setting personal boundaries with her children, Continued on page 21

as well as others in her life. “I’ve learned that parenting can be intentional and purposeful and fun and doesn’t just happen. It’s more fun when you think about developmental stages and what’s appropriate at each age and engaging them on different levels in life, and in interactions with other kids,” Hoeh said. Both Ruby and Jimmy, who started the program as an infant, have benefitted so much from the program on so many levels, Hoeh said. “First, they’ve developed an excitement for reading and they’ve made new friends and learned how to interact with other people, share, and express their feelings and trust adults,” she said. “The program has equipped me to be a better parent, too, more confident and calmer. It helped me recognize the importance of being a parent and putting effort in being a parent pays off in the long run.” About First Things First – First Things First is a votercreated, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org. MERCURY Continued from page 4
half gram on average) would exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s limits for a 10 acre lake. Each and every time a person bites with an amalgam filling mercury is released in the form of gas. As always, each person is an individual with unique chemistry. Therefore, each person will be affected uniquely from the same amount of mercury. I had a lady come into the clinic in a wheel chair after having her mercury amalgam fillings removed improperly and getting a large dose of gas from the procedure. It took a year of periodic chelation (a chemical
method of removing heavy metals from the body) to get her able to wear high heels again. Coincidentally, her daughter also had her amalgams removed and went from being a straight “A” student to a “D” and “F” student. After chelation she went back to making A’s. These two similar responses illustrate that there may be a genetic component to how an individual reacts to a toxin like mercury. Most people seem to have less dramatic effects. Some commonly used agents for chelating mercury are DMPS, DMSA and even EDTA (used a great deal for arteriosclerosis,
hardening of the arteries). In addition to these agents, cilantro will pull out mercury as will N-acetyl-cysteine, a sulfur containing amino acid. Ways of determining the amount of mercury, as well as other heavy metals, that might be in your body include hair analysis and urine analysis. Looking for cracked fillings and discoloration of the gums from leeching mercury may also help to raise a red flag of suspicion. Your dentist may help you choose less toxic substitutes. GLOW! hosts sell-out crowd for opening night
By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner GLOW! Is back! Judging by the crowd’s smiling faces and the enthusiastic group dancing to the sounds of the Mother Cody Band, Arizona’s premiere illuminated art show will be around for a while. The sold-out crowd (limited to 500) enjoyed the great art work displayed along the trails, music and entertainment provided by local talent including short performances by San Pedro Actors Troupe (SPATS), Oracle’s own theatrical group.
