Vertigo – More Than a Movie
ore than an exceptional Alfred Hitchcock movie, vertigo is a label that plagues many a person. It is not, as some might suspect, a fear of heights (acrophobia). The term is used to identify any experience of disorientation. The true definition of vertigo is a sense of spinning, while holding still. This can be associated with the physical spinning of the body in circles or excessive alcohol consumption or perhaps a drug side effect or a viral infection or even crystalline matter that might dislodge and cause disruptive irritation of the balancing fluids of the inner ear. This particular phenomenon is associated with desynchronizing the fluid position in the semi-circular canals of the inner ear with the rest of the proprioception efforts of the mind. Proprioception means one’s own sense of relative position. The mind gathers information from the semicircular canals of the inner ear and the cerebellum of the brain and visual cues from our eyes to construct a balanced sense of orientation in our environment. The semicircular canals consist of three circular tubes located in the inner ear, positioned alongside the cochlea which interprets sound. These canals are filled with fluid that shift, much as the fluid in a carpenter’s level shifts, to indicate position. The three canals are situated to orient in each of the three dimensional planes. If the fluid position lags behind the actual position of the head as perceived by the eyes and cerebellum, then the mind will produce signals that are disturbingly disorienting. The term vertigo is often used for any disorientation, including simple dizziness which has more to do with oxygen deprivation to the brain than an inner ear condition. Dizziness can be seen in people with anemia or hypoglycemia or hypothyroidism or asphyxiation by a poison. A somewhat common cause of vertigo is Meniere’s Disease which is little understood and may be precipitated by a viral infection or fluid buildup in the inner ear or poor circulation. It is suspected to have a genetic component to it in some individuals and it may be progressive, meaning that it could lead to deafness. Another common, and easier to treat, cause of vertigo is the presents of calcium crystals in the semicircular canals.. They may become dislodged and float about the

canals disrupting the fluid movement of the liquid. A quite simple positional movement of the head (the Epley maneuver) can reposition the crystals with the help of gravity to their appropriate location and resolve the disorientation phenomena. Motion sickness is certainly a type of vertigo caused by the eyes and the body being de-synchronized. As with any condition, it is important to identify the

cause in order to treat it appropriately. After all, Jimmy Stewart needed to discover the true identity of his “Madeleine” before he could overcome his disoriented state. Treatments vary from simple head manipulation to antibiotics to chelation for plaque removal. Following a moment of silence for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack and the Pledge of Allegiance, Firewise President Mary Harris presented plaques to this year’s winners of the Firewise Property of the Year. This year’s award was given to Juan and Maria Rodriguez, owners of DeMarco’s Restaurant. Pinal County Public Works was also given an award for the outstanding job they did clearing brush and cleaning up the roadway along American Ave. Their work not only made the area look nicer and created more defensible space in case of fire but made the road safer.

Group forming to help Oracle homebound By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner Oracle Village Outreach is a group of Oracle residents looking to form an organization of volunteers to help seniors and other homebound people in Oracle. The outreach group would like to be able to provide services for anyone that is homebound such as providing transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping, friendly social contact and helping hands for small jobs like light home maintenance, changing light bulbs, etc. Their early focus will be on transportation. Volunteers helping the homebound is a growing idea. Many rural communities around the country are organizing help
groups to provide much needed support for the elderly and others. On Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, Oracle Village Outreach will be holding a public meeting at the Oracle Fire District station at 10:30 a.m. They will be discussing their services, volunteer enrollment and outreach in the community. Everyone is invited. Oracle Village Outreach is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They are looking for volunteers and funding. A fundraising sale is planned for Oct. 6, 2018 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oracle Art Station, 1395 W. American Ave. The governing board for Oracle Village Outreach is Liz LaFarge, President, Virginia Gonzales, Vice President, Dawn Weiss, Treasurer and Susan Ruffini, Secretary.

Optimistic outlook remains for winless Miners By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner Junior Caleb Quintero rushed for nearly 200 yards and Santiago Salazar led the San Manuel defense, but it wasn’t enough to secure the first win of the season for the Miners, who remain winless after a 26 – 12 loss to visiting Willcox last Friday night. “I think we played a solid three quarters, but we just didn’t finish it,” San Manuel head coach Damon Lovato told The Miner. “We dominated the game on both
sides of the ball for three quarters.” Despite the loss, the Miners are maintaining an optimistic outlook for the season, knowing they control their own destiny in the 2A Gila Region. “We have a log of freshmen and sophomores coming up, learning how to play with the big dogs,” senior middle linebacker Michael Ochoa said. “The losses are just learning games for us. We’re progressing through them. “The younger guys’ nerves are starting to settle a little bit and we’re hitting more.”
Added Lovato: “The reality of (our situation) is we can get on a roll in our (region). According to senior lineman Luis Chavez, the Miners are making progress. “We just have to keep working toward our goals and continue to come together as a team,” he said. Up next: The Miners host Santa Rita this Friday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. “If we do our jobs and do what we’re coached to do, the results will be in our favor,” Lovato said.
Miner swimmers qualify for State Meet On Saturday, Sept. 15, Miner Swimmers competed in the Wolves Invitational Swim Meet. The meet was designated as a qualifying meet, which was the first opportunity that Miner Swimmers could achieve qualifying times for the Division III State Championship Meet to be held in November. Over 1,000 Swimmers from 50 Schools from all Divisions competed at the meet. While the Miners showed they could compete with schools of all sizes, the real prize was the potential qualifying times they came home with. The fastest 24 swimmers in each individual event are eligible to compete at Division III State and the Miners swam several
times that are likely to make the cut. Qualifying Times are designated as provisional or automatic. A provisional time will allow a swimmer to enter the State Championship Meet, but only the fastest 24 swimmers will be allowed to compete. An Automatic Qualifying time guarantees that a swimmer can compete at the Championship Meet and is based on the last few years average 8th place time in each event. Senior Michael Primero-Predgo achieved provisional qualifying times in the 100 Freestyle (54.68) and the 100 Backstroke (1:08.65). Additionally, his lead off leg on a relay was also good enough to earn a provisional qualifying
time in the 50 Free (24.86) Senior Darien Apuron achieved provisional times in the 200 Individual Medley (2:26.33) and the 100 Fly (1:03.63). Even though both times are just outside the Automatic Time Cut, Coaches are confident that Darien will be back at the State Championship Meet again for her 4th consecutive year. Sophomore Evan Apuron had some outstanding swims at the meet. Evan achieved an Automatic State Qualifying Time in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:00.62. The time is one of the fastest in the State and is a new School Record, eclipsing the School Record held Continued on page 11
