Are Tacos More American Than Apple Pie?

W

DRY HEAT By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner

e have all heard the phrase “As American as Apple Pie”, usually describing something many consider to be indicative of “American” life, culture, or ideals such as baseball, 4th of July fireworks or rock and roll. So, just how American is apple pie? The original apple pie came from England and was made from

Hayden’s National Night Out and a Community Yard Sale in Mammoth

I

ran across Sergeant Marquez from the Hayden Police Department the other day, and he excitedly told me about the National Night Out celebration which will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Garms Park on 5th Street in Hayden. “All of us are working together on this,” said Sgt. Marquez, referring to the joint sponsorship of not just the Hayden Police Department and Fire Department, but also the Gila and Pinal County Sheriff’s Offices, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office, the Kearny Police and Fire Departments, the Winkelman Fire department, and various town leaders. The National Night Out is familiar to me, but I thought it was an urban thing to “reclaim the night” from crime and disorder. Sgt. Marquez said that rural towns were using the night to show community solidarity, to make children familiar with police officers and fire fighters,

and to encourage the development of community watch groups. Well, Tuesday the 2nd of October is coming quickly, and I hope just about everyone in the Copper Basin will crowd into Garms Park in Hayden from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to enjoy the evening which will feature a bicycle rodeo, food, games, prizes and fun. For more information, contact Sgt. Marquez at the Hayden Police Department at (520) 356-6205. In Mammoth this Saturday, Sept. 29, an indoor/outdoor community yard sale is taking place at 115 Main St. from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spaces are still available. Just call Susan Sanchez (520) 447-6055, Ruben Hernandez (520) 4295997 or Gilbert Hernandez (520) 400-0423. The San Pedro Valley Lions Club is sponsoring this sale. With this slightly cooler weather we’ve been having, the sale should be a pleasant experience.

The group of artists which meets in Kearny every Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. continues to seek new artists to join them. All art mediums are welcome and anyone, new or experienced, can benefit from working in the company of other artists. The group meets at Ray Hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd on Senator Chastain

Street, below the schools. Come spend the day and see for yourself if this is something you want to do. For information, contact Sam Hosler at (480) 2209349. Disclosure: Yes, I’m a happy member of this group. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce met with area business people this past weekend to explore ways that the

Chamber might be more responsive to the area’s business needs. It was a good meeting, with lots of important sharing. This week the board of the Chamber will issue a notice of its desire to hire a new director for the Chamber to help with area events and to develop approaches for better business support. San Manuel defeats Santa Rita for first win of the season By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel football team notched its first win of the season last Friday night, defeating visiting and winless Santa Rita, 47 – 28. The Miners’ difficult early-season schedule finally paid dividends as they finished off the Eagles. “We know our opponents in this part of the schedule are not on the same level as Yuma Catholic and Benson,” San Manuel head coach Damon Lovato told The Miner. “The key for us was (staying with our plan) long enough to peak

at the right time.” Caleb Quintero and Julian Rodriguez starred on the offensive side of the ball in last week’s win, according to Lovato. Santiago Salazar had a “big game” on defense. Junior defensive back Jose Moreno had a pair of interceptions, both returned for touchdowns. “It’s the first time we’ve put four quarters together,” Lovato said. “If the last three games would’ve ended after three quarters, our record would be, 3 – 1.” The victory increased the Miners’ confidence, which combined with the return of injured players like Eli Davis

Jr. Miners remain unbeaten with win against Ray By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel Junior High football team improved to 3 – 0 following its 60 – 16 victory against Ray Junior High last week. The Jr. Miners first two wins were against Miami – an 11-man team – and San Carlos. Quarterback Isaiah Ramirez, running backs Mathias Medina and Ralphie Valencia, and tight ends Noah Casillas and Richard Ivy all scored touchdowns against the Jr. Bearcats. “(We) need to continue working together as a team,” San Manuel head coach Freddy Burnham

said. “We have multiple weapons on offense and we can attack from every position on the offensive side of the ball. We have a strong offensive line that does a great job. “On defense, we are a fast and aggressive team that is led by our linebackers, Isaiah Ramirez, Mathias medina, and Aidan Lozoya,” he continued. “We play together well, and always have at least four players on every tackle. The defense has good field communication and is able to recognize were the play is going.” Up next: The Jr. Miners host Oracle on Sept. 25. Check with the school for kickoff time.

Mathias Medina picked up a fumble for touchdown in the Jr. Miners’ win over Ray.

TACOS

the first Thanksgiving. Now tacos are a different story. Corn (Maize) was native to Mesoamerica including Mexico as well as Native American tribes in North America. It was not only a food staple for indigenous peoples like the Mayans and Aztecs but part of their religions and cultures. The Mayans believed that the gods made humans from a mixture of yellow and white corn. Maize and corn tortillas are thousands of years old and common sense says tacos, which is nothing more than a corn tortilla wrapped around a filling, should be just as old although an exact date of their origin has not been discovered. By the time that Spaniard explorers reached the Americas in the 1400s, the indigenous Mesoamericans already had a sophisticated and flavorful cuisine based on native fruits, wild game, cultivated beans and corn, chilies, squash, and domesticated turkeys. Other native fruits and vegetables that were native to Mexico before the arrival of Europeans were cacao (chocolate), pumpkin, peanuts, tomatoes, jicama, avocado, tomatillos, sweet potatoes and papaya . When Hernan Cortez and his Conquistadores arrived in 1519, the flat corn cakes were known as tlaxcalli in the native Nahuatl language. The Spanish called them tortillas. The Spaniards would introduce beef, pork and wheat flour to the native cuisine. There are several theories as to the origin of the taco. One is that it is definitely pre-Hispanic. Anthropologists have found evidence that an indigenous people, living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico, traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish. It is also believed that the word “taco” may be derived from the Nahuatl word tlahco which meant “half” or “in the middle” as the filling would be placed in the middle of the tortilla. Another historian, Jeffrey M. Pilcher believes that the taco started in the silver mines in Mexico in the 18th century. He believes that is when the word taco was

GLOW! Bigger, better, brighter than ever By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner The opening night of GLOW was a wondrous evening of illuminated art, music, food, entertainment and fun. This year’s event appears to be bigger and better. The sculpture path art is incredible! Food was being served by Nonna Maria’s and Oracle Patio Café, and the Ore House Hilltop Tavern served up their new street tacos made with smoked meat. The music of the Carnivaleros was great and it seemed like more of the patrons were into wearing their own illuminated art and costumes this year. On Saturday, Sept. 29, the theme will be Steampunk GLOW! Music on the mainstage will be provided by Los Puchos while on the paths Hypnopad and Mtn Lmn HiWay. It should be an interesting and entertaining night!
