C

ool crisp mornings, sunsets of crimson and gold, starry nights and deliciously dry days. Welcome to one of the best places on earth to spend a summer season. But there’s more to Jackson Hole than chromatic wildflowers, coniferous peaks and azure skies. An increasingly sophisticated cultural hub, Jackson Hole is a confluence of the Old and New West. One night, we recommend grabbing some cowboy boots and saddling up for a night of Western swing at the historic Silver Dollar Bar. The next day, take a seat at Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village where world-renowned classical musicians perform for the Grand Teton Music Festival. Then enjoy some of the most talked about acts from rock and hip-hop to electronica and funk during the multi-day music and art fest, Contour Music Festival, September 23 to 25. The same goes for the valley’s culinary offerings—on Friday you’re rubbing elbows with cowboys at a farm to table dinner at the idyllic Lockhart Cattle Ranch. The following eve, sipping French wine and nibbling on oysters at Rendezvous Bistro. While there is no shortage of Western art in Jackson Hole, there is also a rising contingent of artist transplants infusing modern sensibilities into the local art sphere. Shows at The Rose, Asymbol Gallery and Center for the Arts host some of the modern creators and thinkers of our time, from Ira Glass to New York City Ballet, while classical Western and nature inspired art abounds at places like

the National Museum of Wildlife Art. But as we embrace the future, we love to revel in our roots, and a day at the Jackson Hole Historical Museum, replete with stunning old photos and mementos of the past, is just the way to appreciate the valley’s rich Western heritage. But with so much happening in the Hole, how are you to stay in the know? Savvy locals know to visit theholecalendar.com. Whether you’re looking for something to do this weekend, Wednesday morning, or tonight, our exhaustive event calendar has you covered. And it’s way too good not to share. Now, every visitor will have a chance to enjoy our Summer 2016 pocket calendar. Stash this handy foldout in your glove box, camera case, or back pocket. It’s the perfect resource for in-depth coverage on Jackson Hole’s signature summer events, as well as info on rodeos, art shows, festivals, fairs, concerts, cookouts, shootouts, and shout outs. When a last minute event pops up, we’ll have that updated on our interactive and easy-to-use website, too. The Summer 2016 Hole Calendar, found at hundreds of locales across the valley, includes helpful insider tips on where to avoid the crowds, how to enjoy a true taste of the West, where to hear free outdoor music and more. If it’s happening in the Hole, we’ve got you covered. And when you get back home, stay in touch with your new favorite community by reading Jackson Hole’s alternative voice, The Planet, online at planetjh.com.

MEET THE PLANET JACKSON HOLE STAFF Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT JACKSON HOLE IN THE SUMMER? A: ROBYN VINCENT, EDITOR “An hour before sunset, I like to head out for a trail run in Cache Creek with my camera in tow. As the sun kisses the Tetons goodnight, I pause just long enough to capture the moment with a photograph, or five. Then I hurry back to civilization in search of an icy libation.” A: CAIT LEE, ART DIRECTOR “Long days in Grand Teton National Park. My day is complete when I have just enough time to summit a classic Teton peak followed by pizza and a beer at Dornan’s.” A: JAKE NICHOLS, REPORTER “I love seeing wild flowers bloom and trees bud; hearing birds and rushing waters. Each year it never gets old— witnessing this magnificent and rugged land awake from its winter slumber.” A: JEN TILLOTSON, SALES DIRECTOR “All of the great outdoor live music opportunities, from Jackson Hole Live that happens in the heart of town at Snow King to Concert on the Commons in Teton Village. These events are the perfect way to unwind in the sun and see new and old faces.” A: CAROLINE ZIELENIEWSKI, SALES EXTRAORDINAIRE “Surf and turf days are my absolute favorite. These typically include a mountain bike ride on Teton Pass or Cache Creek and then paddle boarding down the Snake River or on String Lake in Grand Teton National Park. (Sometimes sloshies are also involved.)”

ROBYN, EDITOR After a long day in the mountains, one of my favorite ways to unwind is by sipping a classic cocktail at The Rose. The swanky Prohibition-era style bar and adjoining Pink Garter Theatre take their drinks and their entertainment serious. Relax in an oversized plush booth or saddle up to the bar and sample eclectic small plates from award winning chef, Rene Stein. Then head into the theatre to hear world-class live music.

DUST OFF YOUR DANCING SHOES FOR THE 12TH ANNUAL TARGHEE FEST, JULY 15-17.

JEN, SALES DIRECTOR Fourth of July festivities are especially festive in the Hole and the celebration starts early. My favorite way to spend the Fourth starts with the annual pancake breakfast on Town Square from 7 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a raucous parade. Then at Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, enjoy patriotic classical music at 6 p.m., followed by stunning fireworks displays at both Teton Village and in town at Snow King around 10 p.m.

Enjoy a picnic lunch amid the lush natural land or dig into a good book. Make sure to bring your hiking shoes and a swimsuit because next you’ll want to hike one of the trails that meanders through aspen groves and rushing river. Final stop? ROBYN, EDITOR Last year’s inaugural Contour Music Festival transformed Jackson Hole into a pulsating music metropolis with heavyweight acts like Thievery Corporation, Charles Bradley and Quixotic. The festival also hosts outdoor art installations, cultural offerings and free yoga classes. Contour was the first multi-day festival of its kind to land in Jackson Hole. This year’s festival, slated for Sept. 23 to 25, is poised to be another highlight of the summer season.

JAKE, REPORTER It’s not just about art and design during the Fall Arts Festival in Jackson Hole. Taste of the Tetons asks valley restaurants and chefs to set up shop in Town Square so that folks can sample some of the best tastes Jackson Hole has to offer. It would normally take you weeks to visit this many restaurants. But Taste of the Tetons brings them all together in one place. n JH Shootout, 6:00pm, Town Square n The Ballad of Cat Ballou, 6:30pm, JH Playhouse n Songwriter’s Alley, 7:00pm, Silver Dollar Showroom n JH Rodeo, 8:00pm, Fairgrounds n KHOL Presents: Vinyl Night, 8:00pm, The Rose n Fitz and the Tantrums, 8:30pm, Pink Garter Theatre
