“The vibrant student community was one of the key factors for me in deciding to study at here. Manchester is a very international place to live, and I’ve met all kinds of students from diverse backgrounds. It’s been great to know that there’s always someone in a similar situation to yourself and having that connection to get through the year is invaluable. I have a great group of friends on the course and we enjoy relaxing in nearby pubs or restaurants. I’ve met people I now consider to be good friends, and we’ll be friends long into the future.” Jacenta James Malaysia

“Our services are available to all students throughout their time at university, and up to three years after they graduate. It can be quite daunting going out into the world of work and we are proud of the service that we provide. Our website is a great starting point for International students – it’s packed with information, from helpful guides and videos to resources such as Going Global, an online database ideal for those planning to return home to work or looking to explore career opportunities in a new country. We offer a comprehensive career development programme, which runs every term. There are workshops covering everything from ‘How to write a CV’ and ‘How to look for a job’, to ‘Filling in applications forms’ and ‘interview skills’. We also arrange employability events in each faculty, giving students the chance to
meet with employers on campus, and help them to get the most out of local and national careers fairs. Employers contact us with a range of opportunities, including parttime work, graduate level jobs, placements and internships, so our online jobs board is updated with new vacancies on a daily basis, and our Professional Passport Award helps students prepare for the recruitment process and how to sell their skills to employers. Our Careers & Employability Advisers offer confidential, professional guidance and advice to help students start thinking about their options and the direction they want to go in. Whilst finding a job after graduation is very much the individual’s responsibility, it’s important for students to know that the Careers & Employability Service is here to give them encouragement and support if they need it.”

Teaching and learning We work very hard to provide you with an outstanding student experience.
Learning On most courses, your learning will consist of a mixture of formal lectures, seminars, practical classes and tutorials. Lectures are a series of timetabled talks to provide a starting point for a subject matter, which is then followed up with your own independent study and attendance at seminars. Seminars are usually made up of smaller groups than in lectures, and you have the opportunity to discuss topics in more detail with your tutors and fellow students.
Direct contact with tutors On many courses you will also have direct contact time with your tutor in tutorials. These meetings might be arranged in order to discuss particular pieces of work, be an opportunity to discuss personal and pastoral issues or they could be about planning your personal and professional development. Many courses also feature practical classes based in laboratories or workshops where relevant, and certain subject areas also feature industry visits or field trips to complement your learning.
Independent study and critical thinking You will also need to undertake independent study in the form of further reading and research to make the most of your course and get the best results in your assignments and exams. Our
libraries and computer drop-in suites (IT zones) are situated on each campus and have extended opening hours. In addition, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) allows you to access resources specific to your course, such as lecture notes and supporting reading, and to communicate with your tutors.
Study support We have a range of support services to help you with your learning and get the most out of your studies. This includes personal support from your tutor, advice and guidance from student support officers, and our online resource Skills Online, which provides resources in time management, help with assignments, group work, writing, giving presentations and note taking. There is also free English language support for international students in every faculty.
Exchange and Study Abroad The University offers high-quality exchange programmes with partners worldwide and across Europe. Most employers value time spent studying abroad as it shows that you are adaptable, confident and not afraid to try new things. Eligible students undertaking an exchange to Europe can receive an Erasmus grant provided by the European Commission. “The university has so many students and staff with huge amounts of experience and knowledge that can be tailored to the needs of the students. In the new business school, we will combine that with new technologies and new methods of learning. The new building will be geared towards modern teaching methods. Every lecture room will have Wi-Fi, and students will be able to view lectures from laptops and download them to iPods. We’ve thought of everything in advance, and there has been a lot of input from students and academics. It’s very much about creating an environment where students feel relaxed, and a place
where academics themselves can deliver courses in a new and innovative manner, which will stimulate them and as a result, improve their interaction with students. A lot of our courses involve elements of team work, so the new building will have specific places where groups can meet to do mock presentations and mock deliveries, and these skills are not only useful for their courses, but are going to be lifelong skills which will be transferable to employment. This is a very exciting time for the university, our current students, and those who will be joining us in the years to come.”

I studied MSc Marketing Management at MMU Cheshire and I think the most valuable thing is that it’s an English qualification. In France, achieving a qualification in England, especially from a prestigious university like Manchester Metropolitan, is very valuable and employers seek students who have studied at a British university. I’ve been very happy here. I always recommend this university to people and even friends from France. The two courses that I’ve completed have given me great knowledge. The teachers and other university staff are excellent, and the students are friendly and sociable. I will miss this university a lot! Erika Narivo France

How to apply Entry requirements, English language, visa information
Entry requirements We have a great deal of experience in meeting the needs of international students, and have linked our entry requirements to many countries’ qualification frameworks. If you need help with checking your eligibility, visit our website www.mmu.ac.uk/international and see your specific country page for more detailed information on entry requirements, and which international qualifications we accept. We should stress that in assessing your application we don’t rely solely on qualifications. We also consider work experience and other factors, so do include everything you think is relevant in your application.
English language If English is not your native language, you will need to provide evidence of your English proficiency. The level of English we require will depend on the qualification you wish to study. Generally, the score required for undergraduate study is: IELTS 6.0, with no less than 5.5 in any section, or acceptable equivalent. Please check www.mmu.ac.uk/international/courses/language_requirements for a full list of English language qualifications that we can accept. Some courses may have higher English language requirements; please check individual course entries in our prospectus or on our website. If your English language test results do not meet our entry requirements, you may be able to attend a short pre-sessional English course. For further information about this and other English language courses please see the courses section.
How to apply All applications for our full time undergraduate courses are submiited via the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service, better known as UCAS. UCAS is the official admissions service for the UK and will send your application details to each of the universities you have listed in your application. If you are applying to Manchester Metropolitan University for a full-time degree, HND, Foundation Year or Foundation degree, you will need to apply online by visiting www.ucas.com The cost to apply via UCAS is £11 for a single choice or £22 if you want to apply for more than one course, college or university. You can apply for a maximum of five choices.
45
www.mmu.ac.uk/international
You will also need our Institution Code and the UCAS course code when completing your UCAS Application. If you are applying from outside the EU, you can apply at any time between September 2011 and 30 June 2012. However, because places on popular courses fill up quickly, we cannot guarantee consideration of applications received after 15 January. You should therefore try to apply as early as possible. You might also want to consider discussing your application first with our Education Advisors in your country, who can give you additional support and guidance throughout the applications and admissions process. It is really important that you understand all the stages involved in the applications process so please do not hesitate to contact MMU International, the British Council or our Education Advisors in your country for assistance if you have any questions.

I’m based in the All Saints campus in Manchester, but I also work in Crewe. My role is student facing, so I work on student orientation and on welcoming new students, making sure they are settled in Manchester, and helping with visa issues. It is essential for us to have international students at the University so that we internationalise our education, and so that local students have a global education. MMU International’s support is important so that students don’t have additional barriers to their
academic study; to make sure they get all the support to achieve whilst here, and to ensure they can make the most of their time in the UK. I would advise international students to do their research before they arrive; the more information you have, the more comfortable you are going to feel. It will be difficult at times, but no question is a stupid question. We want you to come to us with your questions- whatever they are. We’re here to help, and you’ll be happier with the answers you need.

Accommodation
51
www.mmu.ac.uk/international
Manchester Metropolitan University Undergraduate International Student Guide 2012
We understand that feeling happy in your new student accommodation is one of the most important considerations about coming to university and we make the process of choosing your accommodation preference simple and straightforward.
Don’t worry – there’s plenty of accommodation in Manchester and Crewe for everyone – but we suggest you apply early. Much of our accommodation is on campus, or a short walk or bus ride away! All EU and overseas students in the first year of study will be able to secure accommodation in student halls of residence (in either University or privately owned halls), provided you are studying for the full academic year, hold a firm offer and submit the application by 15th August.
University Halls of Residence Halls of residence are large apartment blocks housing single study bedrooms with either private or shared bathroom facilities. All study bedrooms are equipped with beds, wardrobes, desks, chairs, drawers and bookcases but not towels, bedding, crockery, cutlery or similar items, which you’ll need to supply. Budget approximately £130 to buy these things locally. If you’re self catering, you’ll share a kitchen with several other students. These kitchens are well-equipped, with cookers, refridgerators and kettles, as well as cupboards and lockers for food storage. It’s a good idea to cook and eat with other students – it’s cheaper and a good social event. British tap water is safe to drink unless labelled otherwise.
Cambridge Hall, Manchester
Our catered hall provides 10 meals a week from Monday to Friday (during term time only) at set times. These are based on English tastes and diet, so they may be a change to what you normally eat! There are also snack kitchens in this hall which is equipped with a water boiler and a microwave. You’ll find an excellent choice of residential accommodation in our 6 University-owned or leased halls in Manchester, and at our Crewe campus we offer a choice of en-suite bedrooms in shared flats and self catered accommodation in traditional halls. Prices range from £80* per week for a standard room with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities in a self-catering hall, to £104* per week for a room with en-suite facilities, also selfcatering, or £98.50* per week for a standard room with your meals provided (weekdays during termtime). All our halls of residence have a 24 hour security presence, so that you can feel safely at home in your new space. Staff are on hand during the day to help you with any queries and all halls have a warden supported by assistant wardens or hall advisers to provide support in the evenings and at weekends. Additionally we have a nomination agreement with Victoria Hall, a popular en-suite privately owned hall in Manchester. This means that all the rooms in the hall are reserved for Manchester Metropolitan University students with priority given to first years. You can apply for this hall via the accommodation website. Successful applicants will need to pay and sign a separate contract with Victoria Hall directly. Prices in this hall range from £104 - £112 per week. * Prices quoted are for the academic year 2011/12. Please check the website www.mmu.ac.uk/accommodation for the latest details should be on this page.

Applying You can usually apply online for your place in a hall of residence from the first Monday in April 2012. Complete your application for accommodation as soon as you have firmly accepted your offer of a university place and this will help you secure your preferred choice of accommodation. We will allocate places in our halls of residence in July 2012 and if we offer you a place on one of our courses we’ll send your offer of accommodation to you by email so please ensure you check your e-mail account regularly
Find out more Wherever you decide to live, the only place you need to visit is our accommodation website at www.mmu.ac.uk/accommodation This is the University’s source of student accommodation and provides everything you need from information on halls of residence and links to information about Manchester Student Homes in Manchester or Student Pad in Cheshire. Both of which contain information on private rented accommodation. Whether you choose Manchester or Crewe, we aim to help all undergraduate students who apply by 15 August to find a place either in a university hall of residence or in private accommodation.

“My accommodation is of a high quality, and it’s safe and secure. I really like where I live because I’m living with people from all over the world, so I’ve been able to learn from many other cultures. It’s in a brilliant location for students and everything is within walking distance. My accommodation is self-catering, so I have been able to economise on my living expenses by cooking my own food. I do enjoy living in Manchester! The culture, environment, people and nightlife are fantastic!” Chian Chi CHOO Malaysia

Finance – fees, funding and scholarships When considering the cost of your studies, it is not just tuition fees that you have to take into account. You will also need to cover the cost of accommodation, food and other basic expenses.
In addition to your tuition fees you will also need to budget for the cost of living during your time at university. The North West is one of the cheapest regions in the UK, you will need approximately £7,500 a year to cover food, accommodation, transport and other basic expenses.
Please bear in mind that the cost of living in the UK rises by about 3 per cent each year, and if you bring your family you’ll need to bring additional funds.
Cost of living The cost of living in the Manchester region is considerably lower than London and many other world cities. Also, many shops, restaurants and services offer special discounts for students which can help to keep costs down.

IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers)
Seminar
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is the British engineering society based in central London, representing mechanical engineering.
A group of students meet to discuss a subject with a tutor; usually someone (or a group) prepares a paper for discussion and shares the research they have done and their opinions on the subject. Seminars are more interactive than a lecture and are often student led.
Lecture A lecture is usually a formal presentation of ideas and information by a member of the academic staff to a fairly large number of students. Many lectures are accompanied with student handouts, although you will generally be encouraged to make your own notes too. In recent times lectures have become less formal in many universities with lecturers encouraging active participation from students.
Students’ Union Each university will have a Students’ Union (which will probably be part of the National Union of Students). The Union will represent the interests of students and works in their interest about a whole range of issues. The union can also provide the focal point of student activities.

The North West
Pre-enrolment sessions for international students will be held prior to the start of the academic year. EU students do not need to attend. The purpose of the pre-enrolment session is to collect some essential visa information from you which will enable you to enrol online.
