WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY After a successful launch of the first Coppermine Community Newsletter this winter, we are back and bringing even more news, events, stories, announcements and more to our Coppermine community! We have so much to share and give back to our members thanks to our outstanding community partners and neighbors. Unity is a big part of our community here at Coppermine, and we see it everyday through our athletes, campers, parents and members who are equally invested in growing our community. Through this publication, as well as our social media platforms, we will continue to share why the Coppermine Community is so special. We want to create this awareness to educate, support and reiterate its importance and the many reasons why we are so grateful to all of those who are involved. WE ARE COPPERMINE is a whole lot more than our hashtag and something our athletes scream out before their next play. It embodies our principles and values and drives to inspire others while achieving excellence both on and off the fields, inside and outside of our fitness clubs, and during and after school. Be sure to stay informed about everything that Coppermine has to offer through this magazine and by following us on social media! We can’t wait to see you and your family soon!

Our Coppermine Gymnastics team had a fantastic start to the 2021-2022 season. They participated in their first in person meet in two years at Christmas on the Chesapeake in December. The girls gained confidence (and medals) as they moved into the New Year. In January they had another great showing, competing in The Anti-Bullying Invitational. There were lots of individual and team medals with Xcel Platinum taking 2nd Place Team and Xcel Gold taking 5th. Next stop was Philly for the Pink Invitational where the girls did not disappoint in their gymnastics and fundraising efforts. March got busy as they headed into their final regular season invitationals, with all of the girls qualifying for the State Championships! In other news, Xcel Silvers made their competition debut at the Fantasy Invitational and are waiting for their time to shine at States, the Level 3’s and Level 4’s have continued to show up and make huge improvements with each meet, and 2022-2023 Tryouts are this May! MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
John Foster
We are thrilled to introduce you to John Foster, a member of Coppermine Racquet & Fitness - Bare Hills for 22 years! For him, Coppermine is not just a gym, but a family. John suffers from a condition called retinitis and gradually lost his vision, becoming completely blind 6 years ago. Always active, he was determined not to let his circumstances get in the way of his mission to remain strong and healthy. He works out 5 days a week and enjoys everything from pilates and yoga classes, to the cardio equipment and weight machines. From the minute he walks in the door, John says Coppermine is a place where he “just feels good.”
He truly appreciates the Coppermine Racquet and Fitness staff, his fellow members and ALL the people he meets along the way at the club, who go out of their way to make his experience a great one! Whether it’s managers, Sean and Melinda, who consistently make sure he’s comfortable or the friendly familiar voices of Adrienne and Kristen and the rest of the front desk staff, John maintains that he ALWAYS “feels happy and at home!” If you see John around the club, give him a shout out and tell him to keep inspiring those around him. Coppermine Racquet & Fitness is honored to bestow our Member Spotlight recognition onto this awesome man!

COPPERMINE FITNESS
RECIPE:
PUMP UP MAKES: 10 reps, 2-4 sets 10-20 minutes
INGREDIENTS: 2 exercises of opposing muscle groups (Chest & Back, Bi’s & Tri’s)
The key to a perfect pump is to focus on your breathing. Inhale when the weight is moving with gravity, exhale when you are working against it. Most importantly, and most ignored, focus on tempo. The perfect pump will require a specific amount of time under tension. Find your 10 rep max of one exercise and immediately go into the next. Focus on a 4/2/2/2 tempo. For example, if we were doing a bench press: 1. Inhale and lower the weight for 4 seconds. 2. Pause for 2 seconds and hold your breath when you feel a maximal stretch at the bottom. 3. Lift the weight all the way up and breathe out for 2 seconds. 4. Squeeze your chest for 2 seconds at the top before repeating. 5. Move to your opposing exercise and complete 10 reps of each, shooting for 2-4 sets.

alance is important for everyone to improve. It has obvious benefits for the elderly for fall prevention, but did you know that it has amazing benefits for all ages? Balance training helps improve coordination, posture, injury prevention and overall core and functional strength. Your balance training could be as simple as standing on one leg and closing one or both eyes, or more advanced as single-leg squats or singleleg box jumps. Try doing an upper body movement (biceps curls, shoulder presses), with one foot off the floor. The possibilities are endless, so add some balance training to your workout today! t the beginning of their senior season, St. Paul’s School for Girls varsity lacrosse players and best friends Christina Gagnon ’21 and Paris Colgain ’21 made a pact. “We looked at each other and said we’re not leaving here without the IAAM championship,” recalls Christina, now a freshman midfielder at the University of Southern California. So when the Gators came back from a 7-7 tie early in the second half of the Interscholastic Athletic

Association of Maryland A Conference final to clinch a 17-8 win over McDonogh, it felt like destiny. “Our confidence as a team made that moment so special,” Christina says of bringing home SPSG’s first lacrosse championship since 2006. “I have rewatched the video of us running in and hugging each other over and over. All of our hard work paid off.” For the 17 senior players in the class of 2021, the moment was the ultimate comeback story. After a nearwin in the 2019 finals, when the Gators took McDonogh to double overtime before ultimately losing 5-4, the team missed the opportunity to compete in 2020 due to the coronavirus. Despite the lost season, the Gators kept up their IN THE SCHOOLS
morale—and their training. “They didn’t stop,” recalls Athletic Director Erin Howland. “That speaks a lot to the resilience and perseverance of the athletes on the team.” The result: a 15-1 season and a No. 1 position in the Nike/ USA Lacrosse High School Ranking. For Christina, who was named the Nike/USA Lacrosse National and Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Player of the Year, the win meant even more because she shared it with her mom, Gators lacrosse head coach Mary Gagnon P ’21. “It was so, so special to win together my senior year,” says Christina, whose mom has been her coach since she joined the M&D Lacrosse Club team just before middle school. “I wouldn’t be the player I am without her. She pushed me in ways other coaches couldn’t have.” The seeds for the championship title were planted five years prior in 2016, when Mary joined SPSG as the lacrosse head coach alongside assistant coach Melissa Diepold. “We just work really well together,” says Mary, who played Division I lacrosse at Loyola, while Diepold played at University of Maryland. “She focuses a little more defensively, I’m a little bit more offensive-minded. we’re both very competitive. But it’s our culture that makes us the best.” What defines the team culture? “Family first,” Mary says. “No role is bigger than the other. We share the ball. It’s not about who scores the goals.” The team understands that every role is vital and valued, from the practice player on the bench to the lead scorer. “I think all the girls realize that we worked so hard for that championship, and everybody played a part in it,” Mary says. The second-string players even came up with unique cheers to sing each time a teammate scored a goal. “That just hyped the whole team up,” says Christina, whose cheer was a play on the Village People song “Y.M.C.A.” with the chant T-I-N-A. Bringing home the championship title spread Gator pride throughout the St. Paul’s community. “It’s such a crowning achievement,” Howland says. “They were so grateful to be out playing, and then to be able to have the season that we had and to top it off with that very dominant win, it was so special.” It’s not a feeling they plan on giving up anytime soon. “We plan on staying up there on the top,” says Mary. “Once you get there, you don’t want to give it up.”

NUTRITION IS KEY Nutrition is the key to elevating your life. Diet and digestion play a vital role in how you feel, look, and perform. While regular exercise is of course important, proper nutrition has been proven to have a much larger impact on your overall health and fitness. Annemarie Joerres registered dietician at Belcara Health wants to share these great facts with the Coppermine Community to live a healthier, longer and more vibrant life. Balance is crucial. Foods work synergistically in your body, so it is important to consume a balanced variety of all food groups, emphasizing different colored vegetables daily.
A healthy gut is essential. If your gut is compromised, your body will not fully absorb or benefit from the nutrients you consume. Simple changes to your meals will go a long way toward boosting your mood, energy, and health, such as: • • • • •

Once settled, they both knew they wanted to deepen their commitment to Baltimore by opening a local business and decided to do it together. One of the things they noticed when they returned was that there wasn’t
