LETTER FROM ALEX WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY.

We are beyond excited to launch the first issue of our Coppermine Community Newsletter featuring news & events from Coppermine, in addition to stories, special announcements and member advantages from our community partners and neighbors. At Coppermine we believe in giving back to the community we serve. Our athletes, campers, parents and members are equally passionate about the growing community and we look forward to bringing even more UNITY to the community. Through this publication and our social followings, we will continue to create awareness, educate, support and reinforce why the Coppermine community is so special and why we are so grateful for our families being such an integral part of it.

WE ARE COPPERMINE is more than a hashtag and more than a phrase. It is all encompassing principles of developing and inspiring others while achieving excellence both on and off the fields, inside and outside of the fitness clubs and during and after school. As a community, we share common understandings of the importance of family and neighbors, supporting each other, and living a life guided by the best of health, wellness and adventure. Be sure to stay informed of all Coppermine happenings and events by following us on social media. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you soon!

SMALL HANDS NEED

Tiny Easel founder and Coppermine Family solves the mess of craft time! The Nolley family is involved in soccer, lacrosse, gymnastics, and camp! 12

TINY EASEL

uper mom of three, Jennifer Nolley, started and now solely runs her business, Tiny Easel, which makes simple and fun art supplies for young kids. Nolley always knew she wanted to start her own business, but not until she had children did she know exactly what it should be. One day, when she was stuck at home with her three young children and was trying to wrangle them all and help them with a craft, an idea hit her. Her kids needed help opening the caps of paints and using other materials, all while making a huge mess. It dawned on her that she should make an art kit suitable for children that doesn’t require constant supervision and assistance. Nolley, an artist herself, loves being creative and loves making art with her kids even more. She realized, however, that “just putting art in front of my kids was not enough,” she needed to keep them engaged for longer. In order to hold their attention, she knew that the art kit must contain different materials

SHE REALIZED THAT PUTTING ART IN FRONT OF MY KIDS WAS NOT ENOUGH. SHE NEEDED TO KEEP THEM ENGAGED FOR LONGER. to safely and creatively have fun, while avoiding the parental stress that almost certainly follows. She especially enjoys working with watercolor, as “there is so much more control and less stress.” Bringing together her love for art and her knowledge of what works and what does not regarding how kids interact with different materials, Nolley designed a kit of watercolor paints, pencils and crayons as well as other fun tools for little ones. Since watercolor is washable, storable and with just water can turn each medium into a paint, it made the perfect choice. Nolley not only initially designed the product

to benefit her kids, but doing so has also helped her tap into her artistic side. She draws all the illustrations herself by making line drawings, painting them and eventually using photoshop to design the watercolor books and other materials. She says the job is “the best of both worlds,” as it makes both her and her kids happy. In a Tiny Easel box, you will find an affordable, carefully and thoughtfully curated package of art supplies that have passed all safety regulations. Not only will you be able to encourage creativity that is easily managed and fun, but you will also be supporting a local business founded by a woman who just wants to make kids happier and have the opportunity to be more artistic.

HONESTLY HEALTHY & PURELY RAW Pure Raw is a proud supporter of Coppermine It's hard to find truly healthy foods. So many brands misleadingly market their products as such, hiding the fact they use preservatives and chemicals in tiny print somewhere on the packaging. This walks the line of truthfulness with consumers. Pure Raw Juice, however, is not one of those companies. They make cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and acai bowls from fresh ingredients, using no artificial sweeteners or added preservatives. By removing processed sugars, it's hard to comprehend how fabulous their products taste, so it made me question what their secret is. Unlike other smoothie makers that also boast natural products and no artificial sweeteners, Pure Raw Juice uses no ice in their production process. Using ice waters down the product and takes away from natural flavor. To avoid this, Pure Raw Juice uses frozen fruit instead of ice to ensure the texture is creamy and the flavor is more prominent. They also use juices or coconut water as an alternative to plain water to create a more flavorful

ISSUE 1

outcome overall. As for their juices, the secret is less in the product itself and more in the juicer. Instead of using a centrifugal juicer that tends to leave a frothy taste, they use a cold press, which does not heat the fruits or vegetables and therefore keeps all the nutrients intact. Before Covid-19, Pure Raw Juice ran a reusable glass bottle exchange for their cold-pressed juices. It allowed customers to get more involved in helping reduce our environmental impact. This is something the company is trying to implement again very soon. For the time being, Pure Raw Juice actively composts and recycles their waste products and makes a conscientious effort to source locally whenever possible. Pure Raw Juice has locations in Towson, Federal Hill, Hampden, Bel Air and Locust Point. They have recently signed leases for two new locations, one in Timonium and one in Canton. The company is definitely doing a great job following their tag line, “Fueling Healthy Lifestyles,” and making delicious, natural products!

Athletes Serving Athletes, longtime partner of Coppermine Lacrosse Club, teaches selflessness to overcome disabilities Photos by Athletes Serving Athletes

18

David Slomkowski has always believed that “athletics bring people together” and have the ability to “knock down walls and barriers.” Through his company, Athletes Serving Athletes, he has given those with limited mobility the chance to do both. Growing up an avid athlete himself and becoming a three-time collegiate All-American lacrosse player, Slomkowski is very familiar with the feeling of being part of a team and the motivation and strength that it builds. When his athletic career came to a close and he entered the business world, he realized how much he had taken that feeling for granted--and he desperately missed it. What finally got Slomkowski moving again was a story on the news about Dick Hoyt, father of Rick Hoyt, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. Dick Hoyt had pushed his son in a wheelchair in the Boston Marathon, and his strength and story were so inspiring that Slomkowski made it his goal to run the Boston marathon. After launching himself back into the athletic world and being truly moved by Hoyt’s story, he realized that so few others were doing what Dick did. After seeking out ways to get involved and help within the Baltimore Community, Slomkowski was unable to find any organization that helped those with limited mobility be actively involved

TOGETHER WE FINISH!

in any type of running. “I just wanted to race with an athlete,” Slomkowski said, and not until being connected with the Baer School, which supports children ages 3-21 with disabilities, was he able to find his first partner athlete, James Banks. What started out as a 5K run by Slomkowski accompanying Banks was then followed by the duo participating in the Baltimore Marathon. Soon others followed, creating a union between disabled athletes throughout Maryland and whom Slomkowski refers to as “wingmen” who help train the athletes and allow them to reach their goals. Banks was the first among the Athletes Serving Athletes community,

and he still is a competitor of the now exponentially-growing organization that surrounds him. Athletes Serving Athletes now works with roughly 75 athletes competing in a total of 70 races a year with a team of 400 “wingmen” helping them engage in training sessions, races, and special events. The company is run by a small staff of four and relies heavily on volunteers as well as places like Coppermine to help run and support its activities. Athletes Serving Athletes is all about affecting positive change in other people, and allowing these aspiring racers, who face serious adversity and challenges, to have access to great opportunities. When everyone is together and preparing for a race, it looks like a “sea of humanity, all different types of people,” and looking out and seeing the unity and partnership is what makes it all worth doing, said Slomkowski. Each team moves at the speed of the slowest member, which is in line with Athletes Serving Athletes’ motto, TOGETHER WE FINISH!

CELEBRATE & SUPPORT ASA’S WINGMAN PROGRAM An ASA WingMan may be new to running, an experienced athlete, young, old, fast or slow. A WingMan does not need to have experience with individuals living with disabilities, nor do they need to have experience racing, just the desire to train and run with our Athletes. However, we do ask that you be able to run (not walk) the distance of your desired race. ISSUE 1

THE MT. WASHINGTON TAVERN Where everyone knows your name In the fall of 2011, things were sailing along for Dave Lichty and Rob Frisch, owners of the Mt. Washington Tavern in Baltimore Maryland. Just a few years earlier, the two former employees bought the Tavern from its original owner. Business was good. Life was good. Then disaster struck. On Halloween morning, a two-alarm fire engulfed the two-story structure. The fire gutted the Tavern. Damages were estimated to be $2.5 million. Lichty and Frisch immediately vowed to rebuild and have the Mount Washington Tavern back up and running by the next fall. The history of the Mt. Washington Tavern dates back to 1979 when two young men took over the building once occupied by Sparwasser’s, a neighborhood watering hole styled after German taverns. Change came rapidly and dramatically. The Tavern soon became a haven for area lacrosse players and achieved quick fame when in 1980 “The Official Preppy Handbook” recognized it as Located minutes a destination for preppies.

Both Lichty and Frisch became part of the Tavern staff in 1986, Frisch as a bartender and Lichty as his bar back. Over the years, their friendship grew. In 2007, when Frisch was offered the opportunity to take over the Tavern, he knew exactly whom he wanted as his partner. The two have proven it’s an exceptional alliance. Together, they have weathered the tough challenge of rebuilding their business quite admirably. In the first week of November of 2012, the Mt. Washington Tavern reopened. Response was overwhelmingly positive to the rebuild. While many features of the old Tavern remain, the new, nearly 10,000 square foot space is more spacious and features an incredible SkyBar for open air dining plus three other dining rooms. Often the go to spot for milestone celebrations as well as a weekly staple for neighboring customers. It’s got that ‘Cheers’ mentality – where everyone knows your name.

Angelo’s Soccer Corner, now the go-to spot for members of the soccer community, once started in a small building no more than 800 square feet at the corner of Harrisburg Pike and College Ave next to Franklin & Marshall College. The store has now expanded to multiple locations as well as an online soccer specialty website. After 35 years of operating his stores, Angelo Zalalas still has his passion for the sport. Zalalas, originally from Greece, was first a tailor at a time when soccer specialty stores did not exist. Out of his tailor shop, he began selling shoes, got an account with Adidas and unknowingly tapped into a new and growing market. Soccer was his passion, and after entering the shoe scene, he quit being a tailor and opened his first store, calling it Angelo’s Soccer Corner. The local soccer community embraced him, and word spread fast. Not only was his store a place to purchase soccer footwear, apparel and equipment, but a spot where people who shared a love for the sport could go and talk about the game for hours on end. Within the first 18 months of the shop’s opening, Zalalas moved to a bigger location, a space just a few blocks away. Two short years later, Angelo’s Soccer Corner expanded again, adding a store in Camp Hill, a town west of Harrisburg, PA and with another shop on the east side of the city soon after. The fourth store opened in the Philadelphia area, with a shop in King of Prussia in the early 2000’s and another soon after in Huntingdon Valley, north of Philadelphia. In 2017, Angelo’s Soccer Corner teamed up with

Bill Harte--a long time Adidas sales rep, Loyola College graduate and former MLS player--to bring soccer specialty shopping into the state of Maryland with shops in Towson and Columbia. Strong support for the stores has always been apparent at both a retail and team level, helping to build an extensive community. While Angelo’s Soccer Corner has grown tremendously and expanded throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland, its community has stayed close, and Zalalas has had the opportunity to watch his young customers go on to achieve great success at the collegiate and professional levels. Ben Olsen, a D.C. United icon as a player and coach, was one of the first young players to be part of the Angelo’s Soccer Corner community as well as Christian Pulisic, who has taken the Premier league

by storm, being the first American to have won a Champions League medal with Chelsea Football Club this year. With soccer being a sport based on speed, quickness, touch, accuracy and technical ability, having shoes that fit right is crucial for all players. “The wrong fit will slow you down, affect your touch and accuracy and even make you more prone to injury,” says Zalalas. Maybe it’s the high-quality shoes, or the strong sense of community woven within each store. Either way, selling great products and having lots of choices along with great advice and service will always be priorities at Angelo’s Soccer Corner.

DAVID ROSS ORTHODONTICS

COME MEET THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK! “Aligning Happiness.” It’s a phrase that’s more than a tagline for the orthodontic specialists at David Ross Orthodontics. It’s about bringing people together to put smiles on their faces. This Fall, David Ross Orthodontics opened their new 2nd location at Green Spring Station in Lutherville-Timonium to serve families in the Baltimore area. The practice, which has called home to Hanover, Pennsylvania, for the past nine years, offers the highest quality orthodontic experience that’s personal for every person’s smile. “We’ve created such a great patient experience for orthodontic treatment for children and teens through adults, and we’ve enjoyed bringing that experience to the Hanover community,” says Dr. David Ross, board-certified orthodontist and owner of David Ross Orthodontics. “We’re excited to bring our vision for how we do orthodontic work, our experience for patients, our ability to have great customer

service and desire to give back to the community to the Maryland area. We wanted to be able to bring that experience to (patients) who were unable to travel to us (in Hanover).” When it comes to the patient experience, Dr. Ross explains that he and his team focus on not only making connections with people but also making people feel like they’re part of the family. “I think my entire team and I go the extra mile to make sure someone’s happy,” he says. Ross’s concept of family-friendly orthodontic service began with a single question: “How do you want to feel?” Treating people with respect, Ross says, is fundamental to the core mission of his orthodontic practice. “We didn’t want our business to be an orthodontic office. We wanted it to be an experience that we want people to recognize,” he says. “Our tagline ‘Aligning Happiness’ represents bringing people together to make them happy. That’s not

just for the patients and their families. It’s also about the community, involving them in the process, and our team.” Parents may wonder when is the best time to bring children to see an orthodontist. Ross says that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling a consultation as early as age 7. At this age, an orthodontic specialist can make sure that everything related to tooth development is coming along in the right way and on time. Advancements in orthodontic treatments mean that David Ross Orthodontics can provide orthodontic treatments ranging from clear aligners (Invisalign) and clear braces to treatments for TMJ-related issues. “No matter what, we’re going to work hard to give you the best smile possible,” he says. Beyond the office façade, David Ross Orthodontics values the importance of lifting up community. Over the last several years, Ross and his team have supported organizations such as Toys for Tots, Operation Gratitude, STOMP Out Bullying and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Ross says that his team’s vision for community support for the Baltimore community will be taking shape over the next few months. “One of the biggest things that I think we do the most is giving back and supporting schools,” he says. “Education is super important to me. I talk about that a lot in our office with kids, telling them about the importance of education and going to school.” Through donations of hand sanitizer to schools and presentations on oral health to school students, Ross believes that his practice fosters support for education and schools in the community.

COPPERMINE FAMILIES CALL US FOR EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS! At David Ross Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a great smile. here's definitely not a shortage of bars and restaurants in Baltimore City, when you find one with a warm environment, great food and drinks, as well as with a bit of buzz from the city that surrounds it, you know you’ve found Baltimre. Red Star checks all of those boxes, and more, while still being a family friendly place. Located at 906 S Wolfe St, the restaurant is not nestled into the main strip of Fells Point, but instead slightly askew to entice a less rowdy crowd. They are even known to be a top pick for first dates due to the cozy atmosphere. In fact, the owner even met his wife there.

As for the food, everything is made by hand from scratch. The food is prepared all day, as the restaurant only serves dinner and Sunday brunch. The menus are kept tight to ensure that they are executed carefully, and that when customers taste the food they know that “it's being cooked by people that care,” according to the owner.. The cocktails are standard, and there is a variety of high-end liquor to go with your fresh pasta, pizza or tasty selection of small plates. While mostly rebuilt, the building is made out of reclaimed materials, and lined with 200-yearold brick, which acts as a reminder of the area's

unique history. It is believed that the restaurant used to be a brothel, and sailors would paint a red star on the front of the building to let other sailors know about it. There is still a high water marker inside, and the name Red Star to keep the tale alive. Maybe you will get some great fresh food, meet your soulmate, or be indulged in some alleged stories of Fells Point, but whatever brings you to the door, Red Star will most definitely provide you with a great experience.

NEXT STOP: SWEETNESS How The Bus Stop, a Coppermine 4 Seasons partner, is making life a little sweeter! 36

THE BUS STOP

Situated on the grounds of Spring Meadow Farms in Upperco, Maryland, lies the Bus Stop, your new favorite spot for over-the-top milkshakes, soft serve, snow cones and everything in between. Jeff and Brooke Schnorr opened up this sweet place-pun intended--last year, even with the pandemic in full swing. They decided to make their treats available exclusively for carry out at the time and therefore weren't slowed down for a moment. They now have both dine-in and curbside pickup. Jeff and Brooke Schnorr have owned businesses before, and they were looking for their next adventure. It took some time to find the right niche, but after lots of tasty experimentation it all fell into place, explained Brooke Schnorr. She described how much she enjoys all of the creativity that her job brings and getting to constantly come up with new combinations. Each dessert is nothing short of a masterpiece.

EACH DESSERT IS NOTHING SHORT OF A MASTERPIECE. As delicious as the ice cream and other creations are, it's also about the community. Schnorr loves her close-knit staff and having the opportunity to build a relationship with her customers. Whether her customers are stopping by for celebratory desserts or just because, the environment is simply a great place to be immersed in, she explained. Spring Meadow Farms is also home to a Garden Center, Produce Market, A BBQ stand, farm zoo, play yard and nature walk. There are special events throughout the year, so it's never a bad time to go grab a sweet treat and make a day out of it.
