The Planets By Ethan Edwards
Mercury • Mercury is a small rocky planet 36 million miles away from the sun. Mercury has no moons. Did you know that mercury whizzes around the sun at 30 miles per second.
Venus • Venus is the brightest planet in the Solar System and can be seen even in daylight if you know where to look. Venus and earth are the same size.
Earth • The Earth is orbited by one moon and is 93 million miles away from the sun. Our planet isn’t very large compared to other planets. Three quarters of the Earth is covered with water. Earth has more exposed water land.
Mars • Mars has two moons their names are Deimos and Phobos. The red planet as mars is often called is the forth planet away from the sun. Mars has the biggest volcano in the solar system. It stands about 27 kilometres high and 81 Kilometres wide.
Jupiter • Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. Jupiter is 483 million miles away from the sun. Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. Jupiter has 16 moons.
Saturn • Saturn has 18 moons and is 800 million miles away from the sun. Saturn has rings made up of ice particles. Saturn is a giant gas planet. Saturn is known for its thousands of rings.
Uranus • Uranus is a giant gas planet. Uranus has fifteen moons. Uranus is mostly made of rock and various ices. Uranus has only been visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 on January 24 1986.
Neptune • Neptune is a giant gas planet and has 8 moons. Neptune is over 2 billion miles away from the sun. Did you know that every 238 years Pluto and Neptune switch places making Neptune the farthest planet away from the sun.
Pluto • In 1930 the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh in the Lowell Observatory was heralded as the discovery of the ninth planet. • Even in 1930, however, many astronomers did not agree that a ninth planet had been discovered.
