The college hosts a series of events for pupils in years 10 and 11, demonstrating many of the skills our students learn during their time here and giving you the chance to talk things over with our tutors.

Autumn Exhibition: Thursday 27th November 2008, 5.30pm – 7pm Spring Exhibition: Wednesday 25th March 2009, 5.30pm – 7pm These exhibitions are open to year 11 pupils. You will be able to visit the college and speak to programme specialists and view the college facilities.
For a good look at the very latest facilities the college has to offer, come along to our Open Day on Saturday 24th January 2009, 10am – 1pm. There will be opportunities to take guided tours of the college.
Summer Exhibition: Thursday 7th May 2009, 10am – 4pm This all day exhibition is open to year 10 and 11 pupils. As well as an opportunity to meet with tutors and enjoy our students’ display of work. This event includes a fashion show at 7pm.
Connecting to College Do you want to experience college life for yourself? Then come along to our “Connecting to College” event in June 2009. You will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and tutors as well as taking part in tasters of your chosen course.

They have all the information you need about moving up to higher education; they have the dates of those all-important university open days; they run workshops to help you complete your application forms and personal statements. We recognise that personal, private issues – those you may find difficult to talk about can have a bearing on your time with us. As a result, the college’s student counselling service provides one-to-one confidential sessions with a trained counsellor.
They’re committed to helping you stay on track with your work and giving you any extra support you may need. If you’re having difficulties at home or college and could do with someone to chat to, these are the people who can listen and guide you in the right way.

Contacting your parents or guardians If you’re under 19 at the start of your course, parents or guardians are kept informed of your progress and attendance. They will get a report from us at least once a year and have the chance to meet your tutors at our twice-yearly parents’ evenings.

All full time courses are free to anyone aged under 19 on 31st August of the calendar year in which the course begins. If you are over 19, there may be financial help available to you – contact our Customer Services Team on (01325) 503030 for more details.
The costs of studying can soon mount up. From equipment and travel to books, there’s often something to put your hand in your pocket for. But help may be at hand through the Learner Support Fund – contact our Student Finance Team on (01325) 503037 to find out more.

This is a weekly payment worth between £10 and £30 that’s paid directly to you. It’s available to anyone aged under 19, starting college in September 2009 on a course of 12 hours or more per week. Which level is right for you? Employers and educational institutions like universities, measure your qualifications in terms of levels. This will compare the range of routes available to you and what level of qualification you will achieve.
The levels explained Entry Level: Entry Level courses are for beginners and are designed to assist you in gaining basic knowledge and skills. Level 1: Foundation level courses are designed to allow you to gain basic knowledge of jobs, business and industry and are the first steps to gaining a vocational qualification. Level 2: Intermediate level courses include a diverse range of work activities and allow you to take more responsibility for your own studies.

Level 3: Advanced level courses prepare you for employment and higher education. The range of activities you complete will be more difficult, varied and demanding than lower levels. Level 4+: Higher education courses include a variety of complex, technical, specialised and professional activities.

Darlington College has excellent links with major employers in a host of different sectors – all of whom want to help with your training – and gives you the chance to work with our own industry-standard equipment. These are regular sessions where the college’s Principal and other senior managers get to hear your views on college life. Various issues are addressed at these meetings and all student feedback is taken into account, as the college aims to make your time here even more enjoyable and rewarding.
Coming to college isn’t just about attending your lessons and then going home – there’s a whole world of activities we offer that can help broaden your experience and boost your studies at the same time.
Student representatives Students elected to these positions have vital roles to play. Tasked with giving students’ views directly to staff, they are involved in making decisions designed to maintain and improve the quality of our courses. Representatives are also part of influential groups, such as the Student Council (see below), and appear on behalf of the college at events such as exhibitions and parents’ evenings.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme A voluntary programme for people aged 14 to 25, this high-profile scheme is popular throughout the country in providing an array of challenges to help your personal development.

Career opportunities Pathways is a full time course for those who are not ready or are able to begin a Level 1 vocational course. Throughout this course support is available appropriate to individual needs.
Why study Pathways at Darlington College? • Teaching at a pace that suits you. • If you are not ready to move on to the next level then you can stay on for another year.
About the course: This is a BTEC course. You will study for entry level qualifications whilst improving your literacy and numeracy skills. Subject to availability, you can choose from a range of vocational options – hair and beauty, catering, health and social care, metal craft or horticulture for one or two sessions a week. The course can be adapted to meet the needs of individuals. You will be taught in small groups with additional support. You may spend one year on this course then transfer on to your chosen Level 1 vocational course, whilst some may benefit from staying on the course for two years. This will provide you with options to experience other vocational areas and will increase independence. The college works closely with a large number of outside agencies to ensure a smooth transition from school to college life and from Pathways to chosen careers. You will also get a taste of what it’s really like in the world of work by participating in work experience. Further study: This course prepares you for a Level 1 course.

Architect • Surveyor • Site Manager There are a wide range of careers in this industry from architecture or surveying to carpentry, joinery and plumbing. If you have an eye for detail and enjoy learning and developing a broad range of skills, then a career in the construction industry may be right for you.
About the course: Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery You must be enthusiastic about carpentry and joinery and be adaptable to learn various skills. Topics include being able to hold and put resources away safely, putting up scaffolding, portable power tools, being able to repair hand tools, basic joinery, wood machines, technical drawing and health and safety. This interesting course is a practical experience which is led through tutor sessions, practical workshops, group work and tutorials.

You must be hard working and willing to learn about the skills required in this craft. You will learn through practical and workshop sessions. Topics include; safe working practices, building methods and construction technology, prepare background surfaces and plaster materials, produce items from moulds and many more. Diploma in Bricklaying Topics you will learn to develop this practical craft include; being able to hold and put resources away safely, contribute to work relationships and providing work platforms, prepare materials and items for use and health and safety. You will be taught through a range of tutor led sessions, practical workshops and group work. Further study: You will be able to progress on to a Level 2 in the relevant qualification.

About the course: Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery This course will give you practical knowledge and experience and is ideal if you are interested in working with wood. Topics include; manufacturing of basic joinery items, fixing locks, door hanging, fixing skirting and architrave, stud partitioning and linings, setting out joints and trusses, tool skills and maintenance and health and safety. Diploma in Plastering Giving you practical knowledge of industry standard skills, this course is ideal if you are enthusiastic about plastering. Topics include; safe working practices, building methods, how to prepare and apply plaster materials to surfaces, how to fix dry lining and plasterboard products to interiors, how to form sand and cement screeds, how to apply plaster and much more. Diploma in Bricklaying This course is ideal if you enjoy working in a hands-on environment and learning practical skills. You will learn how to calculate materials, loading and uploading materials, preparing materials for mixing, and health and safety. Technical Certificate in Plumbing This course is the first step on the ladder to becoming a plumber. Topics include; key principles (science of water), system knowledge (hot/cold water and drainage systems), working with plastic pipes and fitting, heating systems, building studies and practical training, health and safety, soldering, jointing and hand bending copper tube. You will spend time in the plumbing workshop for practical sessions and there will also be theory sessions throughout the course. Further study: You can progress on to a Level 3 course or as an apprentice in the relevant area.

Alternatively a Level 2 in the relevant qualification and an interview at the college. About the course: National Diploma in Construction If you want to pursue a career in the building industry then this practical course will help you gain the skills and qualification needed. Topics include; health, safety and welfare, construction and the environment, graphical detailing, measuring, tendering and estimating, building surveying, building regulations, environmental science, construction technology, ICT, CAD and applied maths. National Diploma in Civil Engineering This course introduces you to the Civil Engineering area of the construction industry, offering an insight to the options that you could consider in the future. Topics include; health, safety and welfare in construction and the built environment, construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering, built environment, planning, organisation and control of resources, surveying and much more. Further study: You can progress to a range of courses such as CIOB Certificate/Diploma in Site Management or a NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Site Supervision/Management.
Level 4+ – Higher Education The college offers CIOB Certificate/Diploma in Site Management.
Apprenticeship Keen to earn while you learn, as an apprentice in construction you will spend most of your time in the workplace and one day a week in college to gain your qualification. About the course: This is a practical work-related course in which you will study a variety of units. Your learning will be practical sessions, tutor led demonstrations and mini projects. This course will give you a good foundation for a future career on an apprenticeship.
Engineering needs creative people, organisers and those who are good working with others. With an engineering qualification you could pursue a career in a wide range of industries. These include; local authorities, the armed forces, manufacturers in all industries, research and development companies, IT companies and public utilities. With relevant skills and experience, you could specialise in project management, research and development or consultancy work.
Further study: BTEC National Certificate in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, electronics) or alternatively an apprenticeship in engineering.

College interview Once we have received an application form from you, you will be invited in for an interview with a tutor. This will give you the opportunity to talk about the course in more detail and ask any questions you may need answering and take any relevant assessments. Your parents can come along too!

Offer of a place After you have had an interview here, you will receive an offer of a place. You may find that the letter may suggest an alternative course rather than the one you applied for, to ensure that you are on the correct course level. In many cases applicants may receive a conditional offer depending upon the entry requirements. Complete the acceptance form and return it to the college as soon as possible.
Enrolment onto the course You will enrol onto your chosen course at our College Starts Here event. This is a 2 day enrolment event which will be held on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st August 2009. You will be sent details of how and when to enrol during the first week of August, or alternative times if you can’t make these. You must attend one of these events to officially enrol and this will secure your place on the course. Remember to bring your exam results.
Connecting to college This is Darlington College’s one day bridging event and will be held in June 2009. This event will provide you with an opportunity to speak to your course tutor, meet other prospective students and to get a taste of college life.

What if I don’t get the GCSEs I need to do the course I want?
Will there be support in college if I need it?
Don’t worry. Once you get your results, come along to our full time enrolment event in August and we’ll try to work out the best route for you to take. There is a wide range of courses to choose from, so if you applied for a level three course and don’t get the GCSEs you need, you can simply study the Level 2 course and apply for the next level up in a year’s time.
When you complete your application form, simply tick the box that lets us know you’d like support during your studies. If you don’t need support before you start your course, but find that you would like it over time, we can still help. See page 9.
Do I get paid for coming to college? Depending on your personal circumstances, you could be eligible for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), giving you up to £30 a week, plus bonuses for good attendance and progression throughout the year. You must apply for an EMA before you start college. For more information, or to apply, log onto www.direct.gov.uk/ema or call 0800 121 8989.
If I choose to do a vocational course, can I still get into university with the qualification? Yes. Some vocational qualifications are the same equivalent as A-Levels and can get you into higher education. Darlington College offers you a route into higher education through our Foundation Degrees, in partnership with the University of Teesside.
Do I have to be in college every day? That depends on your course timetable. Most full time courses are between 16 to 20 hours a week, which could be spread over three or four days.

Walk
The College is a 20-minute walk from the centre of town and the railway station. Darlington Walking maps are available showing walking times for other landmarks in the town all within a 35 minute walk of the College.
