Connecting Discovery OPEN to College Day: Year 10 COLLEGE Experience college life yourself, come along to our Connecting to College event in July 2011. You will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and tutors as well as take part in tasters of your chosen course. You will receive your invite in the post from our Admissions Team.
Year 10 pupils will be invited to college for the opportunity to do taster sessions in a variety of vocational areas to help with next step choices. Our Schools Liaison Manager will arrange this event with your school, so contact your school for further details.
We also have Open College sessions on the first Wednesday afternoon of every month from 2pm – 6pm starting Wednesday 3 November. Have a guided tour around the college, see our vocational areas in action and speak to our Guidance Advisers if you would like course and career advice. We have a dedicated Schools Liaison Manager who works closely with local schools, to raise awareness about the courses we offer at college, progression routes and choices available to you. Our Schools Liaison Manager, Karen Wilson, attends school events such as parents’ evenings, career fairs and careers in action days and delivers presentations and activities to year 11 groups.
We all need a little expert advice from time to time – our Careers Guidance Advisers can help you with advice on which course to do next, how to complete your UCAS application for higher education and how to get a part time or full time job. We recognise that personal and private issues – those you may find difficult to talk about – can have a bearing on your time with us. As a result, the college’s professional student counsellor service provides one-to-one confidential sessions to support you.

Learner Voice Groups
Student Council
These are regular sessions where managers get to hear your views on college life. Various issues are addressed at these meetings and all student feedback is taken into account, as the college aims to make your time here even more enjoyable and rewarding.
The Student Council works hard to improve the college experience for you, from arranging social events to sporting occasions and visits. Made up of student representatives, it meets monthly to provide an exciting programme of activities, as well as to consider important issues affecting you.
Student Representatives Students elected to these positions have vital roles to play. Tasked with giving students’ views directly to staff, they are involved in making decisions designed to maintain and improve the quality of our courses. Representatives are also part of influential groups, such as the Student Council and appear on behalf of the college at events such as open events and parents’ evenings.
Student Association The Student Association is affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS). The NUS Extra Card is an exclusive student discount card, it is available for £11 and carries a wide range of discounts, both online at www.nusonline.co.uk and on the High Street.

Sporting opportunities More and more students are taking advantage of the opportunities at Darlington College.
Active Get Fit and Join In Here at the college we have seen a huge rise in student participation in sport and exercise activities. With figures almost double those from previous years, more and more students are taking advantage of the excellent enrichment opportunities here at the college. As well as the hugely popular free activities at the Dolphin Centre, regular activities in the college sports hall have also increased to include rugby, badminton, basketball, football, volleyball and netball. There have also been successful courses in archery and street dance, not to mention the regular trips to the snowcovered slopes of Xscape for snowboarding and skiing.

In addition to this the college has also been entering more sports competitions with great success! College teams have entered and won competitions for football, basketball and badminton.

No Smoking
In the food court and restaurant there are healthy choices available to students and every week we have ‘Free Fruit Friday’.
Darlington College is a no smoking site. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on college grounds.
Darlington College Clinic Travelling to the College The college encourages students to use green forms of transport. On site there are plenty of bike stands where you can lock your bikes up for free. There are good bus links to all areas of the town and also to travel out of town. The local train station is about a 15 minute walk away with excellent train links.
To support students’ needs we operate a College Clinic. The College Clinic provides a range of free, confidential sexual health services. The clinic is an open access service, which means you do not have to be referred by your GP. You do not need an appointment and it is strictly confidential for everyone including those under 16. At the College Clinic you can see either a doctor or a nurse who will provide you with a range of support and advice.

Money Matters
Financial Support You may need some financial support to help you study at the college and there are plenty of options available. Course Fees
Care to Learn
All full time courses are free to anyone aged under 19 on 31 August of the calendar year in which the course begins. If you are over 19, there may be financial help available to you. Contact our Customer Services Team on (01325) 503030 for more details.
This is a national scheme offering help with childcare costs if you are aged under 20 when you start your course. It will cover up to £160 per child, per week. To apply, telephone 0800 121 8989 or contact the Student Finance Team.
Travel Adult Learning Grants (ALG) This is a means tested grant available to you if you are 19 or over and are enrolling on your first full level 2 or level 3 programme. To find out more contact 0800 121 8989.
Learner Support Fund The cost of studying can soon mount up. From equipment and travel to books, there’s often something to put your hand in your pocket for but help may be at hand through the Learner Support Fund. Contact our Student Finance Team on (01325) 503037 to find out more.

Army Bursary Scheme If you are aged between 16 and 32 and thinking of applying for a level 2 or level 3 full time course at the college you could be eligible for a £2000 financial reward. The Army is supporting a wide range of vocational qualifications at the college. While you are studying at the college you will receive £1000 from the Army which will help you towards the cost of your studies. Once your course is complete and you have passed a selection at the Army Development and Selection Centre you will be required to commit to four years with the Army. In this time you will benefit from new adventures and further opportunities for your education and receive your second instalment of £1000. Fantastic Facilities When you come to Darlington College you can take advantage of our first class facilities which can contribute towards your studies and can make your time here more enjoyable. Learning Resource Centre (LRC) Our LRC is the perfect place for you to research projects and work on assignments. It is kitted out with computers (all with access to the internet), infotrac onefile, custom newspapers, books, encyclopaedias, journals and newspapers. Books can be used in the LRC and borrowed on a short term basis. There is also an inter-library loan service available to access books not held in the LRC. The Gateway The Gateway is your very own student chill-out area where you can relax when you are not in lessons. The Gateway includes wireless internet access and a computer area, so you can browse the internet on your lunch break.

Which Level
Choosing your level Employers and educational institutions like universities, measure your qualifications in terms of levels. This will compare the range of routes available to you and what level of qualification you will achieve.

Entry Level: Foundation Learning
Level 1: Foundation Learning
These courses are for beginners and are designed to assist you in gaining basic knowledge and skills. Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but you will be assessed on basic maths and English skills. You must be committed to learning in a college environment.
These courses are designed to allow you to gain basic knowledge of jobs, business and industry and are the first steps to gaining a vocational qualification. Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but you will be assessed on basic maths and English skills.
Level 2: These courses include a diverse range of work activities and allow you to take more responsibility for your own studies. Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grade D – E or a level 1 qualification.
Apprenticeships: Level 3:
Level 4:
These courses prepare you for employment and higher education. The range of activities you complete will be more difficult, varied and demanding than lower levels. Entry requirements: • 5 GCSEs at grade A*– C or a level 2 qualification. • For certain courses specific GCSE subjects apply and you may also be required to have sat the higher paper.
These courses include a variety of complex, technical, specialised and professional activities. Entry requirements: These vary depending on the type of qualification, subject area and institution you are applying for. Our Careers Guidance Advisers may be able to help, call (01325) 503040.

Applying for a Full Time Course or Apprenticeship It’s never too early to apply for a place.

Complete a College Application Form We are one of the top regional colleges and are in the top 10% of colleges nationally with Ofsted “Outstanding� rating and Beacon status. Due to our high levels of student success and achievement our courses are very popular so it is essential that you get your application in early. Applications received after 31 July will be classed as late applicants and places may be limited on certain courses. You can apply to Darlington College by filling out an application form. When you have completed it simply post it back to: Admissions, Darlington College, FREEPOST DL368, Darlington, DL3 7ZB. Alternatively you can visit www.darlington.ac.uk/apply to complete the application form online and send it electronically.

College Interview Once we have received an application form from you, you will be invited in for an interview with a tutor. This will give you the opportunity to talk about the course or apprenticeship in more detail and ask any questions you have. Your parents can come along too. Apprenticeship applicants will be invited back into college for a meeting with a member of the Business First Team to discuss how to find a job and to undertake any relevant assessments.

Offer of a Place

Enrol onto the Course or Apprenticeship
After you have been through the interview process you will receive an offer of a place. In many cases applicants will receive an offer letter that is conditional on you achieving the entry requirements, and having a satisfactory school report. You may find that the letter suggests an alternative course rather than the one you applied for, this is to ensure that you are on the correct course level. Complete the acceptance form and return it to the college as soon as possible. (Offers for apprenticeships are subject to securing employment. The college will assist you in finding employment through the CV matching service).
You will enrol onto your chosen course or apprenticeship during our enrolment events which take place towards the end of August. The Admissions Department will send you a Welcome Pack which will include the time and date of enrolment for your course or apprenticeship. It is strongly recommended that you attend on this day at your given time in order to secure your place. If you are unable to make this date and time you must let us know in order to for us to arrange an alternative enrolment time.

APPRENTICESHIPS An apprenticeship offers a great alternative to studying full time at college. A real job with a real wage and skills in the real world.
How Does An Apprenticeship Work?
How Do I Find An Apprenticeship Placement?
As part of the apprenticeship framework you will be expected to spend 4 days in the workplace and 1 day here at the college, where you will work towards an NVQ qualification, Technical Certificate and Functional Skills in English, maths and information technology.
At the college, we offer a free apprenticeship matching service for all school leavers to help you find employment (please note that the college cannot guarantee it will find you a job). We also advertise jobs on the National Apprenticeships website www.apprenticeships.org.uk
What Grades Do I Need?
How Long Does An Apprenticeship Take?
All of our apprenticeship placements are subject to minimum GCSE requirements which will determine whether you start on a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship. For a level 2 apprenticeship you will need 4 GCSEs at grade D – E including maths and English. For entry onto a level 3 apprenticeship you will need 5 GCSEs at grade A*– C including maths and English.
Apprenticeships typically take between one and four years to complete, depending on the type of training. There is no set time to complete an apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual apprentice and the employer's requirements.
How Much Do I Get Paid? Apprentices are entitled to earn a minimum of £95 per week.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS During your time at college, you will study Functional Skills as part of your overall qualification. Functional Skills will be taught by subject specialists and are usually embedded in your main programme. Like other qualifications, you will be studying Functional Skills at the level which best suits your needs. There are three Functional Skills: • English • maths • information technology Whilst you are studying at the college you are entitled to support with the development of these skills and will be provided with opportunities to have them accredited.
These Wider Key Skills are usually only studied if you are on an Apprenticeship programme. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills are designed to enable you to develop your skills in planning and organising activities, being flexible in your methods of working and reviewing your progress in order to improve your performance. 16–19 year olds will be expected to follow a programme of skills development appropriate to their individual needs.
The Wider Key Skills (Personal Learning and Thinking Skills) encourage: • working with others • improving own learning and performance • problem solving

FOUNDATION LEARNING We offer a wide range of courses if you are taking your first steps into learning. Foundation Learning is for 14–19 year olds. It is also the name given to education provision at entry level and level 1. When studying a course at Foundation level you will be offered personalised learning opportunities that can help you gain credit at entry level and level 1 on a learning journey leading to a range of appropriate destinations. These include: 14 – 19 • GCSEs/A levels • diplomas • apprenticeships • supported employment • independent living 19+ • full level 2 • apprenticeships • train to gain (level 1 and 2) • supported employment • independent living

Pathways Career Opportunities Pathways is an entry level course for those who are not quite ready to access a full level 1 vocational course in the college, or are uncertain as to which vocational route you want to take. Throughout the course you will be taught in small group sizes, have high levels of support and follow an individual learning plan which takes into account your individual goals, learning styles and any additional support needs. This course prepares you for a level 1 course or into supported employment or independent living.

FL Pathways Entry Level Duration: 1 – 2 years Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but you will be assessed on basic maths and English skills. Places will be offered following a successful informal interview with one of the course leaders, at the college. Background: As part of the course you will have the opportunity to improve your numeracy, literacy and IT skills alongside studying modules in employability skills, personal and social education and a wide variety of vocational options including: hairdressing, beauty therapy, catering, childcare and horticulture. These modules are undertaken in real busy working environments within the college.

There are many career opportunities in this industry and our courses can help you achieve your goals. Other career options in hairdressing include; working on cruise liners or in hotel spas.

Hairdressing – Adults NVQ Level 2
Duration: 1 year Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but you will be assessed on basic maths and English skills. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. Background: This course is designed to enable you to develop a range of skills that are required to assist you in the salon.
Duration: 1 year Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grades A*– E, a Diploma in Hairdressing Level 1 or Beauty Therapy Level 1. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. Background: This course covers all aspects of basic hairdressing, such as shampooing, cutting and colouring. You will advise and consult with clients which will help develop your effectiveness in the salon.
Duration: 1 year Entry requirements: This course is aimed at people over 19 years of age. No formal qualifications are required, however knowledge of hairdressing would be an advantage. All applicants will have an interview at the college. Background: This is a condensed hairdressing course which requires total commitment and attendance for the duration of the course and is designed for anyone wanting a new challenge or to update their skills.
Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3
Level 4+: Higher Education
Apprenticeship: Diploma in Hairdressing NVQ Level 2
Duration: 1 year Entry requirements: You will need a Diploma in Hairdressing Level 2. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. Background: This course is for the highly committed hairdressers seeking to develop skills or wanting to prepare for a supervisory position. You will learn more advanced techniques, such as colour correction, styling and dressing and creative hairdressing skills.
You may want to study a Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management (Hair, Beauty and Spa Therapies), or if you want to move on to a salon management qualification this will complement the level 3 qualification.
Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grades A*– E, the Diploma in Hairdressing Level 1 or Beauty Therapy Level 1. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. Background: As a hairdressing apprentice you will work as a Salon Junior, assisting senior staff while training as a Junior Stylist. Duties are likely to include; booking client appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair and mixing and applying hair colouring.

Background: This course will provide thorough training in beauty which can lead to excellent career opportunities in the industry. The course covers all aspects of basic beauty treatments, manicure, pedicure, facial, waxing and eye treatments.
Duration: 1 year Entry requirements: You will need a Diploma in Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 2. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. Background: This course will allow you to develop your creativity in beauty through training in body electrical treatments, facial electrical treatments and electrical epilation, leading to excellent career opportunities.

Sophie achieved the highest score for her English country garden design in the regional heat of the competition and went on to compete in London. Her nail art featured everything from a country cottage to rabbits, butterflies and squirrels. The work was carried out in varnish and was in minute detail – truly a work of art.

Student: Construction students Course: Carpentry and Joinery, Plastering and Bricklaying Construction students captured the essence of a Japanese water garden in a project designed to use their individual skills in their trades. They spent weeks drawing up the designs for the feature which went on display in Central Point. This is a yearly challenge to build a working feature with previous projects including a waterwheel.

Background: This course will progress your career in the construction industry in architecture, surveying or construction management. You must be well motivated and hard working as this is an intense course which covers many construction topics including maths.

Background: This practical course will enable you to develop a diverse range of skills within art and design and it will help strengthen your creativity in fine art, fashion and visual studies amongst others. You will also work on ‘live’ projects for local companies, which will give you experience of the design industry.
Student: Art and Design Students Course: Extended Diploma in Art and Design Level 3 Students entered a competition to have their artwork chosen to publicise the Mayor’s Ball – one of the highlights in Darlington’s social calendar. A brief was given to the students by Mayor Brian Thistlethwaite of ‘under the sea’ and some incredible designs were produced. The winning idea was used on promotional posters as well as flyers, tickets, menus and table plans for the event which helps raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Darlington College was awarded “Outstanding” by Ofsted in May 2009 and subsequently gained Beacon status.
The college is not responsible for travel arrangements to and from the college. For any assistance with travel arrangements you need to contact your Local Authority. The college does encourage the use of public transport with good bus links to all areas of the town and Darlington train station is 15 minutes walk away. There are also ample bicycle stands where bikes can be parked for free.
The college holds regular parents’ evenings which will give you the chance to meet tutors and ask any questions you may have. Progress reports are sent three times a year.
Vocational Qualifications vs. A Levels Darlington College offers a wide range of vocational courses which are an alternative to A Levels. Vocational learning is a fresh approach to learning, teaching the skills that will directly benefit your son/ daughter in the workplace. Vocational qualifications also offer progression on to university level qualifications.
First Class Facilities Our facilities are designed to simulate real working environments, with a restaurant open to the public, a fully operational hair and beauty salon and fully kitted out industry standard workshops – our students can benefit from real world education.
Safeguarding Student safety is always at the top of our agenda. The college has a safeguarding policy that is rigorously enforced and all matters relating to it are of the utmost importance to us.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Some areas of the college require protective equipment, such as catering.
