Careers Guidance Advisers We all need a little expert advice from time to time – our Careers Guidance Advisers are here to help you. They have all the information you need about moving up to higher education; they have the dates of those all-important university open days; they run workshops to help you complete your application forms and personal statements. If you want to roll your sleeves up and get stuck straight into the world of work our Careers Guidance Advisers have a huge range of careers information and a careers library. They’ll help you out with those vital job-searching tasks like tackling application forms and producing an eye-catching CV. Student Support Advisers

Contacting your parents or guardians

Easily visible in their red polo shirts, you’ll always see members of our specialist team of Student Support Advisers around the campus.

If you’re under 19 at the start of your course, parents or guardians are kept informed of your progress and attendance. They will get a report from us three times a year and have the chance to meet your tutors at our parents’ evenings.

They’re committed to helping you stay on track with your work and giving you any extra support you may need. If you’re having difficulties at home or college and could do with someone to chat to, these are the people who can listen and guide you in the right way.

Counselling We recognise that personal, private issues – those you may find difficult to talk about can have a bearing on your time with us. As a result, the college’s student counselling service provides one-to-one confidential sessions with a professional counsellor.

Keeping you safe Your safety is always at the very top of our agenda. The college has a child protection policy that is rigorously enforced and all matters relating to it are of the utmost importance to us.

Course fees

Learner Support Fund

All full time courses are free to anyone aged under 19 on 31st August of the calendar year in which the course begins. If you are over 19, there may be financial help available to you – contact our Customer Services Team on (01325) 503030 for more details.

The cost of studying can soon mount up. From equipment and travel to books, there’s often something to put your hand in your pocket for. But help may be at hand through the Learner Support Fund – contact our Student Finance Team on (01325) 503037 to find out more.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

Care to Learn

This is a weekly payment worth between £10 and £30 that’s paid directly to you. It’s available to anyone aged under 19, starting college in September 2010 on a course of 12 hours or more per week. Throughout the year, there are bonuses paid out if you remain on your course and your attendance is good. For more details, or to apply, visit www.direct.gov.uk/ema or call 0800 121 8989.

Adult Learning Grants (ALG) This is a means tested grant available to you if you are 19 or over and are enrolling on your first full level 2 or level 3 programme. To find out more contact 0800 121 8989.

This is a national scheme offering help with childcare costs to anyone aged under 20 when they start their course. It will cover up to £160 per child, per week. To apply, telephone 0800 121 8989 or contact the Student Finance Team.

Travel The college is not responsible for your travel arrangements. To apply for a bus pass, contact your local authority for an application form. If you’re not able to claim travel, we will look into whether the college can help out. For more details, contact our Student Finance Team on (01325) 503037.

Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work This is a national childcare scheme for learners who are 20 or over when you enrol. You must not be working but must have a partner who is working 16 or more hours per week and who is earning under £20,000 per year. To find out more about this scheme ring 0800 121 8989.

Army Bursary Scheme If you are aged between 16 and 32 and thinking of applying for a level 2 or level 3 course at the college you could be eligible for a £2000 financial reward. The Army is supporting a wide range of vocational qualifications at the college. While you are studying at the college you will receive £1000 from the Army which will help you towards the cost of your studies. Once your course is complete and you have passed a selection at the Army Development and Selection Centre you will be required to commit to four years with the Army. In this time you will benefit from new adventures and further opportunities for your education and receive your second instalment of £1000. We want students to feel part of college life and have their say on important issues. There are several ways you can get involved. Learner Voice Groups These are regular sessions where the college’s Principal and other senior managers get to hear your views on college life. Various issues are addressed at these meetings and all student feedback is taken into account, as the college aims to make your time here even more enjoyable and rewarding.

Student representatives Students elected to these positions have vital roles to play. Tasked with giving students’ views directly to staff, they are involved in making decisions designed to maintain and improve the quality of our courses. Representatives are also part of influential groups, such as the Student Council (see below), and appear on behalf of the college at events such as open events and parents’ evenings.

Student Association and Student Council The Student Council works hard to improve the college experience for you, from arranging social events to sporting occasions and visits.

V Involved Project Giving up your time to benefit other people is one of the most challenging and rewarding of experiences. The V Involved Project is aimed at people aged 16 to 24 who are passionate and creative enough to make a real difference in their community. Sporting Opportunities Here at the college we have a comprehensive sport and enrichment timetable that caters for everyone. Traditional sports such as football, rugby, basketball and netball run alongside various exercise sessions that include; boxercise, pilates, swimming and fitness training. We also offer more adventurous activities which include; snowboarding, skiing, archery, gorge walking and kayaking.

Passport Scheme

Here at the college we have a dedicated University Centre offering a range of Foundation Degrees and other higher education courses in partnership with Teesside University.

This Teesside University initiative encourages college students to go on to higher education, giving you a fascinating insight into what’s involved. As well as sampling university life, Passport students receive certificates and can enter special awards schemes – all of which looks hugely impressive to the university admissions tutors you’ll really want to impress.

You may want to get a taste of university life and many of our courses will enable you to study at any university around the country. You may wish to go onto a full time Foundation Degree with us once you have successfully completed a level 3 qualification. Headstart Programme Open to second year level 3 students, this programme helps you prepare for higher education or employment. The programme helps you to engage in a variety of academic approaches which will sharpen your thinking, studying and communication skills. The programme runs for 28 weeks and is a higher education level qualification which is worth 20 university credits. You will study this alongside your main qualification. This qualification, when added to your CV, will give you the edge when it comes to applying for employment or a university place.

Carpentry and Joinery

About the course –

You must be prepared to work hard and be adaptable as you will engage with and learn new skills including; using hand, portable and fixed joinery tools, maintenance and repair of hand tools, dealing with timber materials of all kinds, technical drawing, the use of simple scaffolding and the importance of health and safety. This course is practical based and much of your time will be spent in the college “site” area with tutor led sessions, theory, group work and tutorials, both individual and group.

Carpentry and Joinery

Plastering You will be introduced to the skills required to follow a career in this trade. You will learn to use and maintain the specialised tools and equipment of a plasterer, the safe mixing and use of plaster materials, the preparation of a variety of backgrounds, the application of plaster and skim coats, the use of moulds and the importance of health and safety. You will learn in practical based sessions in the college “site” area, as well as theory and individual and group tutorials. Bricklaying You will learn a variety of new skills including; the use and maintenance of tools associated with the trade, handling of various types of brick and block materials, mixing and using mortar, the safe use of working platforms and the importance of health and safety. You will spend a great deal of your time in the college “site” area in practical based sessions, but the course also requires you to study theory and attend individual and group tutorials.

This course will allow you to develop practical skills in the college “site” area. Topics covered include; the manufacture of basic joinery items, the installation of doors and associated ironmongery, the setting out and fixing of skirting boards and architraves, the construction and installation of stud partitions/roof/floor timbers, along with an emphasis on the importance of health and safety. This will be reinforced with theory sessions and individual and group tutorials. Plastering Much of your time will be spent in practical sessions in the college “site” area. You will be allowed to use your practical skills in; adopting and understanding safe working practices, the preparation and application of plaster materials to a variety of surfaces, the installation of dry-lining materials, how to mix and lay sand and cement screeds. These practical skills are further developed with theory and individual and group tutorials. Bricklaying A practical based course using the college “site” area with theory and individual and group tutorials to underpin the hands on experience. You will learn to develop your skills in areas as diverse as; the calculation of material quantities, the safe transport of materials to/from the work area, the preparation and mixing of materials, construction of cavity walls and returns and the importance of health and safety.

National Diploma in Civil Engineering

A practical based course where the underpinning theory sessions play a very important role in the course. Practical assignments are carried out in the college “site” area where you will learn key principles and system knowledge, incorporating the science of water, hot and cold water/drainage and heating systems, working with copper and steel pipes, including bending, jointing and soldering methods, the safe use of, and working with lead in roofing environments, the planning and installation of kitchen/sanitary equipment, working with plastic pipes and fittings. This is supported by theory sessions and individual and group tutorials.

This course introduces you to the Civil Engineering area of the construction industry, offering an insight to the options that you could consider in the future. Topics include; health, safety and welfare in construction and the built environment, construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering, built environment, planning, organisation and control of resources, surveying and much more.

Progression – You can progress on to the National Diploma in Construction or an apprenticeship in a relevant area.

Progression – These courses will provide you with the foundation on which to build your career either by progressing to the workplace or higher education. You can progress to a range of courses such as CIOB Certificate/Diploma in Site Management or a NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Site Supervision/Management.

Level 3 – Advanced Level

National Diploma in Construction National Diploma in Civil Engineering

The college offers CIOB Certificate/Diploma in Site Management and HNC in Building Studies.

Duration – 2 years Entry requirements – 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including maths, or a level 2 qualification in a relevant subject at merit or above. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report. About the course – National Diploma in Construction If you are looking for a rewarding management career in the construction industry this course may be for you. Does project management, quantity surveying, architecture, site engineering appeal to you? If it does this is the course to consider. You will need to be well motivated and hard working as the diploma covers such areas as; construction and the environment, sustainability, measurement and tendering practices, land surveying, the building regulations, construction technology, CAD, ICT, and applied maths.

Apprenticeship Keen to earn while you learn? As an apprentice you will spend most of your time in the workplace and one day a week in college to gain your qualification. You can study an apprenticeship in various construction areas at level 2 or level 3. For more details on these see page 56.

Success Story… Bradley Langstone is now employed with Balfour Beatty as a Trainee Site Manager. Bradley obtained the job through a work placement that was part of the National Diploma in Construction. Bradley is now studying for a BSC (Hons) Construction Management degree at Northumbria University after achieving a MMM grade for his qualification whilst at the college.

Engineering Career opportunities • Electrician • Technician • Professional Engineer Engineering needs creative people, organisers and those who can work with others. Entry requirements – 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C, including higher level maths, a BTEC First Diploma at merit or above in a relevant subject area. All applicants will have an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report.

About the course – This is a practical work-related course in which you will study a variety of units. You will learn through practical sessions, tutor led demonstrations, lectures and mini projects. This course will give you a good foundation for a future career in engineering.

About the course – This course will help you achieve a solid foundation for a career in this area. You will learn through theory sessions, practical sessions and tutorials. Topics include; electrical and electronic principles, mechanical principles, engineering drawing and CAD, communications for technicians, business systems and projects.

Progression – You can progress on to a level 3 course in engineering or a level 3 apprenticeship in engineering. If you would like to study the Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering, you will need to have achieved the higher GCSE maths paper.

Success Story… Automotive students have shown real driving ambition by making an impressive debut in a tough North East endurance race – using a vehicle they built from scratch. A dozen students from the Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course tackled the gruelling round-the-clock challenge, taking turns both behind the wheel and providing technical support. The whole project had been an incredible experience for the Motor Vehicle students involved and they did an outstanding job. It was the first time the students had taken part in this race and all the students had the chance to drive the kart.

Throughout the course you will be taught in small group sizes, have high levels of support and follow an individual learning plan which takes into account your individual goals, learning styles and any additional support needs.

If you have good GCSE grades then entry onto this course may be considered. This will be discussed at interview.

The college has excellent links with major employers in a host of different industries, all of whom want to help you with your training. And as if learning from the best, boosting your teamwork and communication skills, and gaining a nationally recognised qualification wasn’t enough, you’ll be paid for your work too!

How does an apprenticeship work? As part of the apprenticeship framework you will be expected to spend 4 days in the workplace and 1 day here at the college, where you will work towards an NVQ qualification, Technical Certificate and Key Skills in communications and application of number.

How do I find an apprenticeship placement? At the college, we offer a free apprenticeship matching service for all school leavers to help you find an apprenticeship placement (The college cannot guarantee it will find you a job).

What grades do I need?

How long does an apprenticeship take?

All of our apprenticeship placements are subject to minimum GCSE requirements which will determine whether you start on a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship. For a level 2 apprenticeship you will need 4 GCSEs at grade D-E including maths and English. For entry onto a level 3 apprenticeship you will need 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including maths and English.

Apprenticeships typically take between one and four years to complete, depending on the type of training you are undertaking. There is no set time to complete an apprenticeship as they vary widely in content and size. The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual apprentice and the employer's requirements.

apprenticeship you will not get paid a wage, but you may be entitled to an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), please see page 11.

Programme-led Apprenticeships Programme-led apprenticeships are for 16-18 year olds who want to start an apprenticeship but are waiting to find an employer. This kind of apprenticeship allows you to start working towards a vocational (work-based) qualification at the college alongside a technical certificate in your chosen area, plus key skills. Upon completion of the course (which will be full time from September until June) we will assist you in finding a work placement where you can continue your learning programme, work towards your NVQ and gain a full apprenticeship.

About the apprenticeships: Brickwork* Level 2 and 3 As a bricklaying apprentice your duties may include discussions with clients, estimating costs and the physical labour of bricklaying such as erecting masonry structures and the repair and maintenance of them. On the advanced apprenticeship (level 3) you will be taught how to manage a project effectively on site.

Plastering

Construction is one of the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest industries; therefore our apprenticeships in bricklaying, plastering, site carpentry and bench joinery and plumbing are a popular choice. Our range of construction apprenticeships allows you to specialise in a particular trade, giving you excellent career prospects.

Level 2 and 3 As a plastering apprentice you will learn how to prepare background surfaces for plasterwork as well as producing internal solid plastering finishes and external solid render finishes. If you complete an advanced apprenticeship (level 3) you will progress on to units of dry lining and fibrous plastering.

Site Carpentry and Bench Joinery* Level 2 and 3 As a joinery apprentice you will get experience of working on site, fitting timber roofs, floors and doors whilst gaining the useful skills of measuring, calculating and cutting materials. In the workshop you will learn how to cut and shape timber using hand and power tools. The advanced apprenticeship (level 3) covers some supervision aspects in relation to the craft.

Plumbing

Success Story Apprentice plumber Adam Bainbridge has a promising career in the pipeline after being named the HIP! Apprentice Plumber of the Year 2009. Adam says that he has received tremendous support from his employer and with the experience that he is getting, would like to run his own business one day.

Level 2 and 3 As a plumbing apprentice you will learn about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. You will also cover basic plumbing skills that include safety, cold water and hot water systems, sanitation and central heating before moving on to broaden your skill base to include working with gas.

About the apprenticeships: Fabrication and Welding Level 2 and 3 As a fabrication and welding apprentice you will study the mandatory units of working safely and effectively in an engineering environment and specialise in certain areas chosen by you and your employer. Modules vary from how to interpret engineering drawings to manual metal arc welding.

Industrial Applications Level 2 An advanced apprenticeship in industrial applications will see you become a trained operator within the manufacturing sector. It is possible that you could focus on the engineering or manufacturing area of production depending on your employer. This could see you learning practical skills such as welding and fabrication or how to report and record inspection test results and methods of production.

Electrotechnical Technology Level 3

The engineering industry needs creative people who are good organisers and technically minded. As it is a very broad discipline we have a range of apprenticeships for you to choose from. Depending on your employer, you could be working in a specialised field, with job roles that could vary from operators to craft engineers and technicians.

This apprenticeship covers the installation, inspection, testing, repair and commissioning of electrical installations. The installation could be in a home (domestic) or an industrial premises, such as a factory. Depending on your employer it may include installations in new buildings, additions to existing installations or maintenance of installations.

Manufacturing Engineering Level 3 As a manufacturing engineering apprentice you will study towards a BTEC National Certificate providing specialist work related study. You will cover topics such as working safely and effectively in a manufacturing environment as well as how to interpret engineering data and producing engineering drawings.

Operations and Maintenance Engineering

Success Story Jason Brown volunteered for a number of locomotive restoration groups before landing his dream job with the help of the college apprenticeship matching service, at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon. As a Level 3 Operations and Maintenance Engineering apprentice he is getting the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques as he restores locomotives for display in the museum.

About the apprenticeships: Vehicle Body and Paint Operations Level 2 and 3 A vehicle body and paint operations apprenticeship involves repairing damaged vehicles. As an apprentice you will have the choice to focus on either body repair or body refinishing, depending on whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in fixing the outside body of a car or focusing on its appearance and adding the final surface touch. As part of the advanced apprenticeship (level 3), you will carry out complete vehicle re-finishing and repair structural body panels.

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair* Level 2 and 3 As a vehicle maintenance and repair apprentice you will be responsible for carrying out routine maintenance and basic repair, as well as identifying and reporting faults. As part of the advanced apprenticeship (level 3) you will learn about more complex faults and how to identify and repair them using sophisticated diagnostics treatment.

Her day to day job involves supporting the Armed Forces by providing in-house maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade services for the air, land and maritime systems. For Natalie this is ideal as she gets a head-start on her career in a trade she has always wanted to work in, whilst learning and getting paid.

Computing and Business Administration

About the apprenticeships: Computing Level 2 As an apprentice in computing, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll learn how to operate computers and databases, as well as how to use and maintain IT systems and networks. IT is a very important area, and whatever role you take youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be part of a fastmoving, ever-changing sector. Modules will include; customer care, technical advice and guidance for users, technical fault diagnosis and technical fault remedy selection, security of IT systems, software development and design, software installation and upgrade, remote support for products and services, data analysis, ICT system operation, hardware and equipment maintenance, software development, Cisco networking.

Business Administration* An apprenticeship in Computing can help you develop the skills you need for your job â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether you are teaching someone in finance to process account details more efficiently, helping stock controllers keep track of merchandise, or helping a secretary set up an online company diary. Business and Administration covers the many different occupations that keep businesses running effectively and productively to keep staff and customers happy.

Success Story Katie Haldane started college as a full time Level 2 Business Administration student before moving onto an advanced apprenticeship. Katie made an immediate good impression with her employers by setting-up an internal recording system for the company. After gaining more experience in her current role, Katie has said that she would like to become a Personal Assistant and her apprenticeship is putting her on the right track to do just that.

Level 2 and 3 As a business administration apprentice you will play an important support role in an organisation. Depending on your employer your role could include organising people and resources, using various computer packages to record data and generally playing an important role in the day-to-day running of an office.

Accountancy Level 2 and 3 An accountancy apprenticeship could find you working in an accounts department or helping an organisation manage their money properly, depending on where you are employed. Most apprentices will qualify as Accounts Assistants, Credit Control Clerks, Account Clerks or Finance Assistants. All of these roles help Accountants keep financial records and prepare accounts.

About the apprenticeships: Hairdressing* Level 2 As a hairdressing apprentice you will work as a Salon Junior, assisting senior staff while training as a Junior Stylist. Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair and mixing and applying hair colouring.

About the apprenticeships: Professional Cookery* Level 2 and 3 An apprenticeship in Professional Cookery is ideal if you want to train to become a chef. You will learn how to cook and prepare a wide range of fish, meat and vegetable dishes. You will also become aware of the importance of hygiene and maintaining food safety. Successful completion of the advanced apprenticeship (level 3) could lead to management or supervisory roles.

Hospitality Supervision Level 3 An advanced apprenticeship in hospitality supervision gives you the skills to supervise and manage hospitality operations.

Food Manufacture â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Level 2 As a food manufacturing apprentice you could specialise in the main operations involved in manufacturing and processing a wide range of food products. This may include some exciting production areas, such as dairy processing, bakery production, butchery, or confectionery.

Hospitality and catering is a large and diverse industry. About the apprenticeships: Children’s Care, Learning and Development* Level 2 As a children’s care, learning and development apprentice, the exact nature of your job will depend on your employer. It is likely that you will be working under supervision as a Nursery or Playgroup Assistant, working with children under five.

About the apprenticeships: Health and Social Care Level 2 As a health and social care apprentice you could work in a hospital, doctorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; surgery or private clinic. During your apprenticeship you will undertake practical activities in a health and social care setting, whilst learning about health and safety and how to communicate and work with patients, visitors and staff effectively.

How to apply for full time courses and apprenticeships

1 Complete a college application form You can apply to Darlington College at any time throughout the year by filling out an application form. When you have completed it simply post it back to Admissions, Darlington College, FREEPOST DL368, Darlington, DL3 7ZB. Alternatively you can visit www.darlington.ac.uk to complete the application form online and send it electronically.

College interview

Offer of a place

Once we have received an application form from you, you will be invited in for an interview with a tutor. This will give you the opportunity to talk about the course/ apprenticeship in more detail and ask any questions you many need answering. Your parents can come along too.

After you have been through the interview process you will receive an offer of a place. You may find that the letter suggests an alternative course rather than the one you applied for, to ensure that you are on the correct course level. In many cases applicants may receive an offer letter that is conditional on you achieving the entry requirements. Complete the acceptance form and return it to the college as soon as possible. (Offers for apprenticeships are subject to securing employment. The college will assist you in finding employment through the CV matching service).

Apprenticeship applicants will be invited back into college for a meeting with a member of the work based learning team to discuss employability and CV matching and to undertake any relevant assessments.

4 Enrol onto the course/ apprenticeship You will enrol onto your chosen course/ apprenticeship at our College Starts Here event. This is a 2 day enrolment event which will be held in the week commencing 23 August 2010 (dates to be confirmed and these will be on the college website). You will be sent details of how and when to enrol during the first week of August, or alternative times if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make these. You must attend one of these events to officially enrol and this will secure your place on the course. Remember to bring your exam results.

You can apply directly through the common application process system. To apply through this system you will

If you do not receive a code, then speak to your careers teacher or Connexions Personal Advisor and one will be given to you. The application website is secure and you can store and fill in your form and keep it for future reference. You can also send the form online.
