Money Matters – fees, grants and loans Part Time Study If you are a part time higher education student, financial help is available towards your fees and other costs related to your course. How much you receive depends on your personal circumstances and the type of course you do. Fees Details of fees for September 2009 courses will be available from August 2009 and you can obtain this information by calling the Customer Services Team on 01325 503030. For Foundation Degrees, HNCs, BAs and UCPD courses linked to a partner university, fees will be invoiced directly to you from the relevant university. Professional course fees will be payable to the college.
Access to Learning Fund The Access to Learning Fund provides extra money if you need help for your course or to stay in higher education. It can provide help if you are a student on a low income or in financial hardship. You can for example use the fund for specific course or living costs that aren’t already met by other grants such as childcare, books, equipment and travel. Money from the Access to Learning Fund is paid on top of the standard student finance package. It is not meant as a substitute for it. You would be expected to apply for all the loans, grants and bursaries to which you are entitled before asking for help from the Access to Learning Fund. Eligibility is decided on an individual basis and application forms are available from the University of Teesside by calling Student Services on 01642 342277 or by emailing sfo@tees.ac.uk.
Grants Help may be available with fees depending on your circumstances. You can apply to Student Finance England for non repayable help towards the costs in the form of a “Fee” and “Course” grant. The “Fee” grant is available to help with the cost of the course tuition fees and is provided directly to the university or college. The “Course” grant is to help with study costs, such as books, materials and travel and is paid directly to you. The support is means tested based on your income and that of your partner if you have one. The maximum “Fee” grant you can get is based on the number of credits you are studying in an academic year compared to the full time equivalent course. To find out more and to apply you should contact Student Finance England. The PTG1 form is not normally made available until mid August prior to the beginning of the academic year. However, your form will not be assessed until you have attended your course for 2 weeks. If you need to know whether you will receive support for your fees or a grant, please check the following website www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and click on forms and guides, the form you will need to fill in is the PTG1 Form.
8
Employer Payment If your employer is paying for your course fees then you will need to provide a letter from your employer stating this when you enrol. Disabled Students If you are a student with a disability or specific learning difficulty, you may be able to receive extra help from the Disabled Students Allowance. It is a grant to help meet the extra costs of studying that student’s face as a direct result of a disability or specific learning difficulty. They are designed to help disabled students study on an equal basis with other students. The amount you receive doesn’t depend on your household income. Further information is available by contacting Disability Services at the University of Teesside on 01642 342277 or email disability@tees.ac.uk

Full Time Study
Bursaries / Scholarships
If you are starting a full time Foundation Degree in 2009 you will not have to pay your tuition fees up front (although you may do so if you wish). New full time students can get loans, grants and bursaries to help with their tuition fees and living costs. These help you study first, and pay back when you’re earning.
Please check with the individual university for more information on their bursaries/scholarships, as this can vary between each institute.
Tuition Fee Loans
Maintenance Loan
Student loans for fees are paid direct to the college or university and you have to apply for every year of your course. You won’t have to start making repayments until you’ve left your course and are earning over a certain amount a year. Your repayments will be a percentage of your earnings over the set amount. Deductions are usually made through the PAYE tax system by your employer in the same way as tax and National Insurance contributions.
All full time UK students can apply for a maintenance loan towards their living costs. All students are entitled to borrow up to 72% of the maximum amount made available by the Government. The remaining 28% is means-tested. How much of this remaining support you can get depends on your household income and the amount of maintenance grant you receive. This loan is repaid together with the “Tuition Fee” loan mentioned earlier. Contact Student Finance Direct online at www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk
Maintenance Grant Around half of all full time students are also likely to be eligible for a yearly maintenance grant. You will be assessed for this grant when you submit your application for support from Student Finance England. This grant is means tested based on household income and also affects the amount of student loan you will be eligible to receive. This is non-repayable money to help with your living costs. For further information contact the Student Services team at the University of Teesside on 01642 342277, email studentfinance@tees.ac.uk or visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
Full time Cert Ed and PGCE students should apply to Student Finance Direct for financial support, visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and fill out a PN1 Form.
Access to Learning Fund and Disabled Student Allowance The Access to Learning Fund and the Disabled Student Allowance is also available for full time students. Access to Learning Fund information is available by calling Student Services on 01642 342277 or by emailing sfo@tees.ac.uk.
