FUN UNDER THE SUN
When the City of Coral Springs began to take shape more than 50 years ago, planners had FUN in mind. They wanted to make Coral Springs a community that families would flock to, so their plans included plenty of amenities and conveniences, with its residential subdivisions surrounded by shopping areas and more than 750 acres of parks and open spaces. The City of Coral Springs has long recognized that parks, activities and recreational facilities play a key role in establishing the quality of life for a community. Concerts and movies in the park, numerous sports leagues, a skate park, special needs activities, roller and ice hockey, Kamp Kool summer programs, art classes, senior activities, and so much more – we really do have...
TENNIS ANYONE? Tennis Center of Coral Springs 2575 Sportsplex Drive CSTennis.org • 954-344-1840 The Tennis Center, including its Cypress Park location, offers classes for all ages and skill levels, including drill and cardio classes for adults, and lessons and camps for youth. Memberships are available as well.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Cheri McCurdy and Carrie Webster met on the courts a few years ago, became competitors and later, friends. Neither of them knew how to play tennis. Cheri found out about the Coral Springs Tennis Center eight years ago and has played every morning since then, unless it’s raining. Carrie started playing at the Tennis Center seven years ago and learned the sport by taking some group lessons. Stay-at-home mom Carrie now plays an average of five days a week. USPTA tennis professional, Kevin McCarthy, witnessed both Cheri and Carrie blossom into the players they are today. “It is very gratifying to introduce the game of tennis to a student and see them develop in their skill set, but even more importantly in their passion for the game,” McCarthy said. McCarthy has been at the Tennis Center for 25 years and since his arrival, leagues and lesson programs have thrived. With four full-time certified instructors, as well as part-time staff that assist with the junior programs, there is something for everyone to enjoy. “I like that there are plenty of courts and they offer something for everyone,” Carrie said. “By far, one of the best things is the camaraderie – we consider ourselves a tennis family.”
After getting familiar with the sport, both Cheri and Carrie moved onto playing in women’s competitive leagues. “I saw cardio tennis in a magazine and thought it sounded fun,” Cheri said. “I played one summer as a kid, but other than that was a total newbie. I learned everything at the Coral Springs Tennis Center.” Her passion grew from the moment she stepped on the court. “I was hooked immediately! It is fun, both physically and mentally challenging and yet, you don’t even feel like you are working out,” Cheri said. Cheri enjoys tennis so much, she drives to the Tennis Center from Delray Beach and plays every morning before heading into work. Cheri and Carrie’s friendship has grown over the years. “Tennis friendships carry over to just being very good friends in life,” Cheri said. Carrie couldn’t agree more. “Cheri is one of the friends I have been lucky enough to make by playing tennis,” Carrie said. “I enjoy tennis because it’s a lifetime sport that can be played year round both socially and competitively,” Carrie added. “I’ve met some amazing people here and it is great exercise.”
