Hi Everyone,

successful women because it makes our own grand dreams seem more attainable as well.

It’s great to be back and feeling refreshed after my holiday in the UK!

My own personal journey has led me to a place I could only have dreamed about years ago. I always wanted to work for a magazine but by the time I turned 30 I thought it would be impossible to achieve this goal without any formal training or experience in the field. Fortunately, because of my bosses amazing eye for talent (lol) and belief in supporting other motivated women, I was able to launch my career and, through lots of hard-work, become Managing Editor.

It’s amazing what you can do after a good break. I think my productivity has doubled since I’ve been back! On that note, welcome to our biggest, boldest Women in Business issue yet! We have had amazing support from the women in our local business community again this year and feature a record-breaking 42 women in our 6th annual Women in Business issue. There is something us girls just love about celebrating our successes in Core Life Magazine. Is it the indulgent hair and make-up session? The fun photo shoots? Professionally written article about our lives? Or is it just the opportunity to feel glamorous for the day and a sense of pride to see ourselves celebrated forever in print? Whatever it is, I know one thing for certain; there is no shame in standing tall anymore. The tall poppy syndrome is a thing of the past and a new trend for supportive encouragement is emerging. We raise each other up instead of putting each other down. We feel inspired rather than threatened. We can enjoy reading stories about

When my baby boy came into the world just over nine months ago, adapting to a new life with him was a significant game changer. No longer was I just career-driven, I was now mummy first career second. Although, there have been days and deadlines when it didn’t always feel this way! After almost a year of balancing both, however, I am pleased to report I am starting to find my happy place. I can give 100% to my job and am able to manage my workload so I can give 100% to my baby too. I hope this Women in Business issue inspires all the women and men in our community and that we motivate each other to make 2018 a year we can all be proud of!

When Gale took her first job as a check-out chick at Target in the western suburbs of Sydney she never thought that, years later, she would be working at her dream job promoting a beautiful waterfront venue in the Whitsundays.

Born in the heart of Sydney, as a child Gale moved two hours away to a 57 acre hobby farm, at Warragamba Damn. The area used to be the Sydney water supply and she grew up here with her two brothers and sister.

Unlike many of her peers, when she graduated from school in year 12, Leeza had no time for holidays and instead was eager to launch her career as a hair stylist.

Gale spent many years working as a sales rep before meeting her husband in Coffs Harbour and returning to Sydney where they owned a flooring company together for fifteen years. A chance holiday in the Whitsundays changed their lives forever. “We came up for a week’s holiday and fell in love with the Whitsundays in 2002. It’s Australia’s best kept secret! We went back to Sydney for three years to build and sell our business before buying a one way ticket back with our two white fluffy dogs and a cockatiel,” said Gale.

They say love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life and Leeza couldn’t agree more!

This passion led her on an incredible journey working with mentor and close friend Gina Talanhi where she became an award-winning hairdresser. “I loved competing in hair comps in Mackay. The adrenaline was pumping and left me buzzing. I won hairdresser of the year twice in Mackay and completed in state competition where I also placed in my sections,” said Leeza. In 2014 Leeza started her own business and has been operating successfully for almost four years now.

Once they arrived, the couple had numerous jobs including an opportunity to be relief managers on Long Island and Palm Bay Resort. During this time Gale always had a calling to the Whitsunday Marine Club in Cannonvale.

“I love making my clients feel their best and some have become my greatest friends. I still have loyal clients who have followed me right from my first year of apprenticeship to this day.”

“I always knew I would get the opportunity to promote this amazing venue. I could see how to make the business grow and I am so grateful that I could now make this stunning waterfront venue available for the whole community not just the financially blessed,” she said.

“My family are always so supportive, caring and are there for me whenever I need them. I have a beautiful sister who is like a best friend and a wonderful and supportive husband. I also have 2 Chihuahuas that I love so much and am expecting my first child in a few months which is very exciting!” She said.

In her spare time Gale loves working on her herb garden, cooking, swimming and the outdoors.

I love how everyday is different in the clinic, there are always interesting things to see,” she said. A born and bred Proserpine local, Tegan has a massive family and is the eldest of five children with two brothers and two sisters. A true animal lover, one of her passions is fostering dumped or unwanted puppies and teaching puppy preschool. “I love being involved in their education and starting the pups off on the right foot,” said Tegan. Tegan can’t help but take her work home with her and fortunately her husband doesn’t mind having a menagerie of animals living with them.

“I am a crazy chicken lady that always has way too many chooks! I seem to end up with the odd ones that come through the clinic and need homes,” she said. When she’s not rescuing our local animal population, Tegan enjoys catching her own seafood and taking it home to cook. Tegan loves living in Proserpine and cannot imagine living anywhere else. “I love the awesome little community we have. I love my job and am very passionate about all our animals. any have declared it as the ‘finest walk in the world,’ the Milford Track in New Zealand’s South Island is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is challenging. Four local McDonalds licensee’s, Nicole and Ben Ramsay from Mackay and Mike and Jane Muller from the Whitsundays, joined 36 other McDonalds licensees, their family members and employees in trekking the Milford Track to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. Mike talks to us about the challenge. “We are always looking at different ways of fundraising to support Ronald McDonald House. The New Zealand hiking challenges started last

year with the Routeburn Track in the Southland region. This year, the Milford Track was chosen as an even greater challenge, taking five days to complete. With each person donating $1,000 to Ronald McDonald House, it was a great way to raise $40,000 for the charity,” Mike said. The 53 kilometre journey begins at the head of Lake Te Anau, and leads you across suspension bridges, board walks and a mountain pass. Trekkers will see pristine lakes and sky-scraping mountain peaks and then feel the misty breath of Sutherland Falls, the tallest waterfall in New Zealand.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE ALONG THE WAY?

HOW DOES RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE HELP THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY?

“Each day we faced new challenges along the track. Whether it was heat, rain or just the dreaded sandfly. They were relentless everywhere we went. Of course, one of the bigger challenges was to keep our feet free from blisters. Unfortunately, Ben developed a bad case of blisters and by lunch on day three at the top of McKenzie pass he could not go any further.”

“RMHC provides a ‘home-away-from-home’ for seriously ill children and their families, who need to travel to larger hospitals for treatment. Our North Queensland house can accommodate more than 100 people each night. With the average length of stay for families being two or three months. In our region alone, we had more than 154 families use the House in 2016-17.”

On a sunny day it is picture-perfect but many claim that only when it rains, and torrents of water cascade down the steep mountains, have you truly experienced the magic of the Milford Track. “Day four we walked 25km in torrential rain. This gave us a completely different perspective of the Milford Track. The waterfalls were coming out of the mountains with so much force, it was spectacular to see. But it’s the scenery of NZ with its rocky peaks and deep glacial valleys that make every moment worth viewing,” Mike said.

HOW CAN LOCALS SUPPORT THE ANNUAL RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITY GALA NIGHT? “Each year our local RMHC committee organises a gala event in Airlie Beach. This raises between $10-20k for the House from the generosity of our local community. This year we will be holding our annual Ronald McDonald House Charity Gala night on 27th October at The Palm House. Hopefully both the business community and the wider community will get involved by either sponsoring, donating or just coming along on the night for a great night of entertainment.”

CrossFit for a Cause If there's one thing that separates CrossFit from other strength-and-conditioning programs, it's the sense of community. This has never been so apparent as when Wolfe Den CrossFit 4802 from Airlie Beach and Strand CrossFit from Townsville collaborated on a fundraiser for bowel cancer.

Wolfe Den owner, Tace Withers, met Phillip Sherriff, part-owner of Strand CrossFit, by chance last year.

The Crossfit community is as diverse as it is large. There are those that wear suits and ties, as well as those that wear shorts and thongs to work. There are newbies and seasoned athletes. Some attend the box alone, and others as couples or groups of friends. A variable cornucopia of people; a true slice of humanity; all with personal aspirations of health and wellness.

“We met at an All Stars comp last year and were last-minute ring-ins to create a team. Our team ended up finishing in the top 10 so we progressed to the national finals in Sydney. “When I learned of Phillip’s silent battle with bowel cancer, I wanted to do more,” she said. Tace, along with her partner, Brad Calf, organised a friendly competition at the beginning of the year between the two Crossfit boxes which doubled as a fundraiser. (A box is Crossfit talk for their gym or club). 35 teams of pairs sweated it out

Coastal Throwdown 2 is planned for June this year, hosted in Townsville, with plans to make the fundraising challenge a yearly occurrence.

f you’re out on the Whitsunday roads before April 26 and see a flash of Lycra go by, spare a wave for Shona and Woody.

Vital cancer projects in these Whitsunday communities are set to receive $10,000 each and there will be plenty of activities for the community to enjoy.

For the fourth consecutive year these two long-time locals are pedalling with purpose in training for the Tour de Cure. It never gets easier but they’re in it for more than the ride. “Show me a family that hasn’t been touched by cancer,” Shona says.

Local school children can expect to be immersed in the Tour’s ‘be fit, be healthy, be happy’ message, and among the free events planned for Proserpine and Airlie Beach is a live broadcast of Channel 7’s Sunrise program from Port of Airlie on Sunday, April 29.

Since 2015 and with the help of the Whitsunday community, Shona and Woody have been raising money for the charity that supports people affected by cancer and ultimately aims to find a cure. This year the dynamic duo are back and best of all they’ll be riding on home turf.

St Catherine’s Catholic Kindergarten at Renwick Road, Proserpine offers a contemporary leadingedge learning environment for children aged between 3 to 5 years old. They have recently unveiled the new outdoor play area equipment, including: water feature, creek bed, bridge and music corner. St Catherine’s Kindergarten, Proserpine is very excited to present these new features complete with irrigation and soft fall for the 2018 Kindergarten children. CAPTURING CHILDHOOD MOMENTS, CREATING ADVENTURES FOR IMAGINATIVE CHILDREN

ake your milestones more than a passing moment with beautiful photography. Babies grow, children grow even faster and by the time they are teenagers, we fondly look back and wonder where the time went. Rebecca Clews is a Portrait Photographer located in Mackay, specialising in Children's Portraiture and Family Sessions. She works in children’s education as a teacher’s aid, so her natural ability to interact with young ones aligns for beautiful imagery captured through her lens. “Dealing with the little ones is just second nature. My approach to photographing children is simple; let them be themselves. I like them to interact, talk and show me their world. The most beautiful photography is that which captures their natural joy, innocence and beauty,” Rebecca said. From as young as she can remember, Rebecca had a fascination with capturing moments in time. She would use her parents or grandparent’s cameras as often as possible on holiday and would turn babysitting sessions with her siblings into impromptu photoshoots. Once she had children of her own, she realised how important it was to capture those special moments. Not

only of her children for her to enjoy, but also of the older generation for her children and grandchildren to one day cherish for themselves. “Family packages are always special and contain memories of laughter and fun, it’s not every day some families are together so it’s great to make opportunity of certain situations. Some families also like to include their much-loved pets,” she said. Rebecca takes the time to plan a photography session with her client prior to the shoot. She then discusses key locations around the district which allow for spectacular backdrops. She also offers stylised children’s sessions which are a unique way of capturing a child’s personality. “During these sessions I work closely with the parents to design a theme that best displays their child’s character. Recreating their favourite Disney character, Boho, Pirates or just a beach adventure. It’s all about capturing your child, in the moment, doing what they love,” Rebecca said. I was the most career-driven person you could meet, but after my little gems came along, there came a time where I realised that I really loved being a Mum. A wise person gave me advice when my first daughter was born, she said ‘you will never wake up when you are 80 and think I wish I worked more, but instead, I wish I spent more time with my kids. You can never bring time back, embrace it and enjoy it for all it is.’ With that in mind I worked two days a week in the office and spent the rest of the time with my daughters, until both girls started school, to ensure we built memories that money can’t buy. “

ecoming a business-owner in your early 20’s would be an intimidating prospect for anyone, but Amie Chalmers knew that this opportunity was the next step in her career she had been waiting for. “There was no doubt that I was ready to work for myself when the time came. Amie purchased Adam & Eve Hair nearly three years ago and attributes much of its success to the mentorship she received from a strong support network of women around her. “The owner of Core Life Magazine, Rebecca, was the previous owner of Adam & Eve Hair when I took over the business two years ago. Working alongside her has inspired me to push further as a business woman and chase after the dreams and aspirations I have for my business. She is so driven and works hard for what she wants. I’ve learnt a lot from her over the years. I have also been inspired by a business mentor, Emma Greyson. She has a no BS attitude to running a business. Attending her workshops and conferences have resulted in breakthroughs to better run my business,” Amie said. During Bek’s pregnancies and raising her family, she worked alongside her husband, helping clients to choose home designs and looking after the finances at Apex Homes, before leaping into the business world of retail fashion in 2016. “All my working life I have been in the customer service industry, ranging from retail to real estate. I love helping people find what they are looking for, whether it be a gorgeous new dress or helping them design their new home,” she said. OQ Mackay Owner Manager, Melissa Green, credits much of her success in business to teamwork with her husband, Jason.

“He took three years off at one point in our family life to look after our children, Jasmine and Mikayla, full-time. He now works school hours in the business and this is how we juggle business and family life. “We teach our children the principles of teamwork also. We try hard to do all the household chores during the week so that weekends are free for fun and adventure,” Melissa said. Melissa has been with BOQ for 23 years and says that her greatest moments have been enabling families to move forward with their own dreams. “The greatest joy is enabling someone to purchase their first car, their first home, their first business. In some instances, I have helped three generations. To be serving the grandchildren of people I met all those years ago brings me immense joy,” she said. Saying ‘Yes’ to opportunities which present themselves has seen Melissa take great strides in both her professional and personal life. She has been selected to carry the Queen’s baton for this year’s Commonwealth Games and has been selected as a board director for Greater Whitsunday Alliance. “I am looking forward to increasing the liveability and prosperity of our three regions.”

Her determination and drive saw Melissa awarded as the Owner Manager of the Year for BOQ, however she says that she and her husband were also awarded Best Parents for 2017, presented with an engraved trophy from their youngest daughter, which was also just as special. Q&A with Melissa What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years? “Seeing my children who are turning 13 and 11 years old this year become productive and driven members of society.” If you could make one rule that everyone had to follow, what rule would you make? “Pay yourself first! I read about this principle in

the book called the ‘Richest Man in Babylon’ I read an article by a financial planner that said if parents saved less than $3 a day from their children’s birth, their child would have over $3M when they retired, when the average of investment earnings was used. I wish everyone would put this into practice.” What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Be careful who you take advice from and be careful of the dream killers.”


While we try and teach our children about life, our children end up teaching us what life is all about.

lace Brady knows this all too well. While helping her daughter, Allegra, to become the best version of herself, she often realises the advice she gives is advice she could also apply to her own life.

“I give her advice to help her confidence, help her deal with difficult situations and remind her not to take life so seriously, and then realise that I need to take some of my own advice onboard,” she said. Clace is a mother-of-two to her daughter and son, Allegra and Harvey. When she had Allegra, she had no problem finding beautiful, practical clothing for her daughter. But when she was pregnant with Harvey, it was a completely different story. “I couldn’t find any stylish clothes for boys that weren’t really expensive. My husband, Michael, suggested I design clothing for boys and girls that was both affordable and stylish. As a parent I know that kids want to be comfortable and parents want affordable, durable clothes that look great, so I created a collection that meets both sets of criteria. I embarked on this crazy, exciting, nerve-wracking journey of being a designer, business woman and mum,” Clace said. Designing clothing that kids love to wear and that parents adore is Clace’s prime focus. She knows she has the mix just right when she gets repeat business. “It means that the child wearing the clothes is happy and so is the parent with our product. I still get so excited when I pack an order for a customer who has previously bought from us.” Allegra & Harvey has a boutique at 121 Business Centre in Cannonvale. Clace has also expanded into the wholesale market, with Allegra & Harvey designs sold in boutiques across Australia.

“We seem to have created a wonderful work/life balance that I am really proud of. I don't know many couples who can spend all day working in the same business and then go out to dinner and still have so much to talk about. I think Allegra and Harvey has worked so well because I have the confidence to try anything new because he supports me 100%.”

Q&A with Clace Who inspires you as a business woman? “Roxy Jacenko - Owner of Sweaty Betty PR. She is a mother, business woman and she inspires me because she seems to do it all, but doesn't hide behind the fact that she has surrounded herself with a great team. This is what I have learnt from her, find great people to work with and delegate.” If you could make one rule that

everyone had to follow, what rule would you make? “Saying sorry; no-one actually says those words anymore. People don't seem to be able to admit when they were wrong. I have great respect for anyone who can.” What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read? “I just finished a book called The Chalk Man - I couldn’t put it down.”

Owners, Karen Rix and her partner, Don Cameron, purchased the original butchery on Stewart Drive in March 2009. It had been a local institution, operating for more than 30 years with only one full-time butcher and one part-time employee. Over the following nine years, Karen and Don expanded the business significantly. The Stewart Drive premises more than doubled in size and a second shop was opened, MBW On the Barbie, in the Whitsunday Shopping Centre. Collectively the businesses now employ 20 locals and have revolutionised the variety of meat available in the Whitsundays.

Karen credits the businesses relationship with the community for a large portion of its success. “The business has grown every year, mainly through word of mouth. The locals supported us strongly which we believe comes from providing quality products, which taste great, at affordable prices. We provide friendly service, we’re never too busy for a chat or banter and we support community fundraising where we can. We donate meat trays and sausages to local clubs for raffles and sausage sizzles as well as meat to community charities providing food to those in need,” she said. uite literally the heart of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, the ‘heart of the reef’ logo has become synonymous with our identity. It welcomes visitors into town, it’s the focal point for many selfies and is even becoming a popular backdrop for wedding photography. But did you ever wonder who created it? An initiative of Skål (the international tourism group that promotes the Whitsundays), Katherine Bowers was the creative behind the campaign. “The logo has been rolled out on many billboards, water bottles, wine bottles, souvenir merchandise, and the recent Airlie Beach main street sign at the roundabout. This campaign makes me so happy to see its role in positively promoting Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays,” Katherine said. Designer and owner of KB Design, Katherine had a natural passion for art and design. She enlisted in the Design Academy in Brisbane in 1996 and has worked for many design agencies in Queensland and abroad since. She moved to Airlie Beach in 2003 and has found great fulfilment in supporting and promoting the region with effective

rading her snowboarding goggles for sunnies was a no-brainer for Jennifer Copsey, who moved to Australia in 2011 from the mountain town of Bend in Oregon, USA. A California girl-at-heart, she was born in Santa Cruz county and went from a sunshine-filled beach climate to nine months of snow per year, before gravitating to the sun-drenched beaches of Australia. She has been in the Whitsundays since 2012 enjoying various tourism roles; including resorts, restaurants and charter boats utilising skills in finance, sales and marketing. Her expertise led her to a dream position, as the Island Sales and Marketing Executive for Hamilton Island Enterprises. The obvious perk, being able to live on Hamilton Island. “I am truly lucky to call this place home, right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef National Marine Park. There is always something new coming my way, from project managing film crews on shoots, to organising buggy rallies for agents,” she said. With a love of the environment, Jennifer is proud to work for an organisation with high social and environmental consciousness. “Recycling and environmental conservation on the island is always a priority. We have our own recycling plant, organise barge clean-up days out on surrounding islands and our IGA grocery store is plastic bag free. “This island truly is home to its staff and residents, and that creates a great foundation for our visitors.”

Q&A with Jennifer What do you do in your down time? “I love exploring the island and all of its natural wonders. There are so many walking trails and hidden coves and beaches to experience. I’m also a painter, so there is natural inspiration everywhere!” What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years? “I look forward to seeing how the island will grow. Many senior staff have made this their home for decades, and I always love hearing about how much this place has evolved.” Where is the most interesting place you have ever been? “I love Monterey Bay, in California, near my hometown. The landscape is so fascinating, its grey and green surging seas, kelp beds, tide pools and sand dunes; an eclectic mix of wildlife too, including whales, sea lions and otters.”

“This year is my 5th Tour de Cure ride. It is special as we are riding through and staying at Mackay (where I grew up) Midge Point, Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Bowen (my home town). “Cancer affects so many of us in different ways. Last year my dad was diagnosed with three types of cancer with three operations. Thankfully, after undertaking chemotherapy for six months, he has been given the all clear,” Naomi said. To date Naomi has raised well over $100,000.00 for cancer charities, funding research projects focused on finding a cure for cancer, support projects for those suffering with cancer and prevention projects that are focused on community education and awareness. Naomi also donates her time to mentor young athletes and focuses in helping those who struggle with confidence and body image. “It’s my gift I feel I can give to our upcoming generation who struggle with social media and this ‘perfect image’ they think they have to live up to. Mind you, it is effecting much of the population, as life is never perfect, and we should never compare as we don’t really know what struggles other people are facing,” she said. With a demanding schedule, Naomi says that gratitude, goals, living a healthy lifestyle and persistence are factors of her success. “Goal setting is important, as is a good routine. Consistency is the key to my training. I have amazing people around me including friends and family. The key is to get up early, exercise, and set up your day. Eat nourishing food without being excessive or obsessive and be grateful every day.” Through her business, Hit Higher Highs, Naomi tailors individualised plans for her clients, from world-class athletes to every-day people wanting to improve their health and wellbeing. “Ninety percent of all diseases are preventable. “I want to motivate people to live the best life they can. “Last year’s client’s broke PB’s did their first race, broke 50km and 100km treadmill records, qualified and raced Ironman championships, 50km ultra races and obstacle events. S

ometimes, though we strive for it, work / life balance doesn’t exist. And that’s ok too. The passion we have for our career, the drive we have for success and the determination to make a business the best it can be, it can be an all-encompassing challenge. After spending her younger years in hospitality, Amanda Brockbank rose to the challenge of a mining apprenticeship. Thrown out of her comfortzone, she reveled in the change of becoming a grader and haul-truck operator. But after marriage and thinking about children in her future, she realised the mine site would not be an ideal environment to raise a family. She moved back to her home town of Bowen and grabbed the opportunity to buy the former Horseshoe Bay Café. “Beautiful Horseshoe Bay needed its café back and I was confident this venture would be well-supported by the town,” Amanda said. In her first couple of years in business, Amanda admits she had no work / life balance. “My husband was still living in Mackay and I just wanted to put my heart and soul into the Café. I ended up having separation anxiety and couldn't leave. That’s when I fell in love with the name, Meraki. It represented what I had put into this place, my heart, soul and everything. It wasn’t until my son arrived that I took a step back to find better balance. “There was no way I was missing out on beautiful moments with my son, so I had to work things differently. Thankfully I have amazing staff who stepped up and allowed me to do that. My husband was still working away for almost the first year of Caleb's life and it was extremely difficult to juggle being a new mum and run a business, but the café is my baby too, so I had no choice but to make it work,” she said. Through many personal challenges, Amanda has discovered that she can’t do everything. “I tried to be Superwoman but there was nothing left for me. I lost someone very important to me, my Grandfather; my parents almost lost their home in Cyclone Debbie, a close family member was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and my sister and I both lost babies through miscarriages. “These things amongst others have made me stronger. I'm now an advocate for changing the stigma around miscarriage. It’s an awful and traumatic experience and it can also be extremely isolating. I think it’s important to talk about it and for women to know they're not alone and they're not broken,” she said. Through the challenges, Amanda has found her balance, where she can work on her business instead of in it, allowing her time to grow both the business, her little boy and hopefully, her family.

here aren’t many opportunities in life to give as we get, but at Zambrero, its philosophy is to end world hunger. Making delicious Mexican food for the community to enjoy is really just a bonus!

Sitting in a food court nibbling on some delicious nachos, Evelyn couldn’t have predicted that this simple lunch choice would shape her future. She had been working as a test and tag technician in her family-owned electrical contracting business throughout Bowen and the Whitsundays. On the fateful day she chose to have Zambrero for lunch, she noticed something on a napkin that would change her life. “On the napkin I discovered that Zambrero is a collection of franchises. I really enjoyed the food and when I learned about their humanitarian mission of ending world hunger through the Plate 4 Plate initiative, I decided to give them a call. “I have always enjoyed Mexican food and helping others and I believe it's a lot easier to sell something you're passionate about,” she said. Evelyn is the Whitsunday Franchise Partner of Zambrero Cannonvale and is delighted to bring delicious and healthy food to the community. “One of the greatest joys is watching little kids who haven't been willing to try the menu, finally decide to try some new food after coming in for months with their parents and loving it! One of the greatest challenges in business is getting noticed and getting customers in the door. Although Zambrero is a national brand, we are still relatively new, especially to the Whitsundays. Brand recognition is something that needs constant work. “There are few places where you can customise your meal to suit your needs and donate a meal to someone in need at the same time. We are a humanitarian enterprise that happens to make delicious Mexican food,” Evelyn said. Evelyn has recently moved from Bowen to Cannonvale and is looking forward to more involvement with community events this year. When it comes to balancing business with life, Evelyn’s advice is simple. “Remember to take time out for the little things, be it a spontaneous walk along the beach, a chat with a customer about their day, dinner with friends or a hot bubble bath.”

Owner, Maureen Parker, has been in the clothing industry for 38 years and says there is still much to learn as the industry evolves. “I left High School at the end of Year 10 to attend the Melbourne College of Textiles to complete a Degree in Fashion. Despite my experience, I’m still learning! I think it’s a sad moment in any career to think you know it all,” she said. Embroidery in Stitches received its big break many years ago when it was approached by a large national company to become their embroiderer for its mining sector customers. Since then the business has extended to cover a multitude of business sectors, uniforms and embroidery needs. Although it has many large clients, it is its relationship with the local community that Maureen enjoys most. “Through our hard work and planning we’ve established long-term relationships with small local businesses and also multinational companies. Throughout the year we support local clubs and groups by donating our time and services as our way of giving back to the community which has supported our business.” Maureen is also a mother and president of the Whitsunday Women in Business. “The best thing in life was having my daughter. Kids bring a whole new meaning to life and they are the greatest gift of all,” she said. rian Poschelk Dental is more than a dentist, it is a dental home, where patients are educated to see the mouth as part of the body, not a separate entity. The family-owned business has been providing dental services in the Whitsundays since 1981 and has cared for and educated generations of local families. Not only have generations grown with the business as patients, but also within the business itself. Dr. Alice Harriott was three months old when she made her first debut to the Bowen dental surgery in a bassinette. Her father, Dr. Brian Poschelk and his brother Kevin opened the first practice to service Bowen and Collinsville and later Cannonvale and the Whitsundays. Her mother, Mary-Anne Poschelk, was a registered nurse and midwife who contributed to the growth of the business while juggling her career and motherhood. “Mum and Dad had a new business and a new child. Mum did what she had to do! As a child I watched Dad work tirelessly between Bowen, Collinsville and Cannonvale and on the dental train in North Queensland. At that age I didn’t really understand that level of dedication or Dad’s sense of responsibility and service to the community. He was always on call,” Alice said.

“Being a Mother means I am a role model, whether I like it or not. This is why I feel we should look up to as many people as we can. We’re not all perfect, everyone makes mistakes; but it’s those who own-up to and learn from their mistakes who are the ones that will succeed.”

fter working inland in the mines for more than six years, including mines rescue and emergency response team, you wouldn’t think that selling sunglasses could provide a scarier environment than that faced mining. But as Mez Bowen explains, going into business for yourself can be one of life’s daunting challenges. “A complete change in career-path and relying solely on yourself for your income takes an incredible leap of faith, and that’s definitely scary. After we signed on the dotted line to purchase Bright Eyes Sunglasses Airlie Beach I found out I was pregnant, so there was no going back to mining for me! This was it, we had to make it work,” she said. While Tropical Cyclone Debbie impacted much of the community, Mez and her family felt the brunt harder than most, losing their house, possessions and sustaining significant damage to their business. “We lived in a hotel for four months while they gutted our house and rebuilt it. The store was also significantly damaged, and we will be closing from March 8 to March 23 for a complete store refurb,” she said. On top of working through devastation from the cyclone, Mez’s husband, Murray, is an Open Cut Examiner for an opencut mine, working a 7-on 7-off roster. “It’s been tough to go from working and living 24/7 with my best mate, to spending a whole week away from him every other week. Communication is key, we talk every day, even if it’s just for five minutes. You just do what you have to. If staff call in sick, I just pack up Piper and take her in with me. It’s challenging to be a full-time mum, business owner and wife, but if I didn’t have all this chaos I’d probably be bored,” Mez said. Cara Cavanagh OCEAN DYNAMICS ‘Seas the day!’ Dreams are best pursued by diving headfirst.

C

ara Cavanagh isn’t shy to explore the depths to see where life takes her. As a train driver in New South Wales for 10 years, she had a comfortable career and well-paying salary that had allowed her to travel the world. Yet she felt as though something was missing and took a chance to return to the sea as a dive instructor. I have always been around the water as I grew up surf life saving with my family. I had been diving recreationally for five years already and had dove with Great White Sharks in South Africa and Whale Sharks in the Philippines. I made the decision five years ago to leave my comfortable job and take a risk in becoming a dive instructor. It was the best decision I ever made and I haven’t looked back,” she said. Cara has been with the Ocean Dynamics team for the past year and has a hand in almost every part of the operation. “My days range from working as hostess/chef/dive instructor on both day and overnight diving charters exploring the best of the Whitsunday Islands and reefs, to guiding action-packed jetski tours. My days are always different and certainly never boring! “I am currently studying my Master 5 and Marine Engineer Driver 2 qualifications so that I can progress to become the master and engineer on-board our vessels,” she said. With a love of the ocean that runs deep, Cara has saltwater aquariums which she nurtures at home in her spare time. “They are living reefs and give a good representation of the types of corals and animals that you would find on the Whitsunday reefs. ost people know her as the fun loving lady behind the lens, but one of Queensland’s most talented wedding photographers has quietly captured her final ceremony, waving goodbye to brides and grooms after capturing more than 1,000 weddings. But much to our relief, she isn’t completely putting away the camera and will still continue to shoot the varied shots required for Core Magazine – thank you Norina! So, what will she be doing after 17 years as a wedding photographer? Many people don’t realise that Norina spent the first nine years of her working life managing and owning a 70-acre orchard in Gippsland, Victoria. Norinas days were spent pruning and grafting thousands of trees, operating machinery, implementing irrigation and pest control strategies and talking to bus loads of visitors about the farms renowned shelter belts. Being back on the land, working with soils, mulch, plants, rocks and machinery, means she is very much in her element and loving it! Alongside her partner, Tim Perkins, Norina is an ownerdirector of Whitpro, a tree care, earth moving, landscaping and garden maintenance business which has grown substantially throughout its 13 years in the Whitsundays. Norina has hit the books and is studying horticulture “I’ve got my horticulture hat back on, this is the next chapter of my life and I couldn’t be happier with the path I’m taking. My past knowledge and experience regarding the effects of water, sunlight, nutrients, pests and the changing seasons on plant life, its fruit production and us as consumers is all flooding back.” But the main thing Norina appreciates now is time for the important people in her life. “My biggest regret was not being with my father when he passed in country Melbourne. Dad was very unwell but I made the decision to shoot a wedding because the couple were devastated at the thought of me not being there. My father passed the night before their big day, so I turned up to their wedding feeling completely broken. They had no idea that when the bride walked down the aisle with her father on her arm that I could barely contain myself. It was the most challenging day of my career,” Norina said.

Q&A with Norina What is something you will NEVER do again? “Lots of things! Life is an endless journey of learning” “I’ll never shoot another wedding, have another baby, I’ll never drink out of a milk container without checking the use by date, I’ll never leave the bungs out of the boat, and I’ll never again ask a guy why they call him horse!” “I’ll never go through the baggage carousel at the airport - not only is it unacceptable behaviour - there are many sharp components that cut you in that confined space! What is one of your favourite smells? “Chook manure. No, I’m joking. There is a Lemon Myrtle tree near our yard that I love to pick leaves off, scrunch them in my hand and smell them for hours.” Who (past or present) has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished? “My father. A master in his field. Devoting his life to martial arts. His determination, his never give up mentality, the sacrifices he made in other aspects of his life to achieve greatness. A moment is but that, a snippet of time which can come and go in the blink of an eye. The memory of moments is what makes life unforgettable, which is why photography is often among the most treasured possessions we cherish. A look, a laugh, a twinkle in an eye; capturing love and laughter through a lens turns moments into lifelong memories. Busy mum-of-three, Naomi Luzon, specialises in capturing life with creative flair with an authentic timeless style. Her ability to find the extraordinary in the everyday enables her to create unique keepsake portraits. Her experience has allowed her to specialise in the genres she enjoys the most, family, pets, maternity and wedding. With an autistic child herself, Naomi understands the anxiety many parents face when considering a photo shoot for children on the spectrum. “My first son was the reason I turned my passion for photography into a career eight years ago. I needed a profession where I could spend more time with him. After visiting one of those ‘pop-up’ photography studios in a shopping centre and discovering how expensive it can be, I decided to start my business from scratch to provide affordable photographic options for more families,” she said. To keep up with industry trends, Naomi spent time learning film photography and digital artistry, although her style has emerged as

being simple, creative and timeless; something which has naturally progressed over time. Her good friend and industry colleague, Sarah Reeves-Saunders from Sarah Hearts Photography, taught Naomi many skills through her workshops as a shining example of women in the industry working together to achieve greatness. While Naomi’s number one work tool is her camera, she explains how her ‘me time’ contributes to her career. “I have three children and my husband works FIFO in Western Australia, but I still make time to visit my gym, Muscle Garden, three times per week for time to myself. Keeping fit allows me to do daring work in the field, climbing high up cliffs to get the perfect shot, wading through water, scaling rocks; anything to capture that perfect moment from a unique angle!” As a photographer, the outcome is what Naomi loves the most. Connecting with her clients to produce beautiful images that they can’t wait to hang on their wall.

“Someone said to me, ‘You summited Mount Kilimanjaro in 2016, jumped out of a plane from 14,000ft in 2017, what have you planned for 2018?’ To which I replied, ‘These were not planned but opportunities that were presented to me and I said Yes. “Say Yes, work hard, and keep going!’”

ir Richard Branson is famously quoted for saying, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity to do something and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes. Then learn how to do it later.”

“Yes” has magic within it. So often we are afraid of life; we fear failure, we anticipate the worst, we don’t know what to expect. But Whitsunday Anglican School’s Principal, Mrs. Maria McIvor, has shown how the power of “Yes” can open your world to life-changing opportunities. The mother-of-four and proud grandmother of one doesn’t let fear of the unknown stand in her way. As a leader of tens of thousands of children over her 30-year teaching career, Maria’s enthusiasm for life is one of the greatest examples she can set for the children at Whitsunday Anglican School in Mackay. One of her most recent challenges was participating in a ‘Toss the Boss’ promotion where she completed a skydive for charity. “To tell you the truth, skydiving wasn’t on my bucket list, but I was doing it for such a wonderful cause (the Mackay Hospital Foundation). I can now say, do it, put it on your bucket list. It was absolutely incredible; The free fall is the closest you’ll get to flying like a bird,” Maria said. Throughout Maria’s career she has been a pioneer for women here in Australia and across the ditch in New Zealand. She worked as a National Certificate Examiner and was heavily involved in the implementation of New Zealand’s national curriculum and assessment initiatives. She spent time as the Assistant Principal at Wellington Diocesan School for Girls, the largest girls’ boarding school in New Zealand, and was the first woman appointed to the Executive Management team at St Augustine’s College for Boys. She held the role of Deputy Principal at St Hilda’s School on the Gold Coast for seven years before becoming the fifth Principal and CEO of Whitsunday Anglican School in Mackay. Her most memorable moments in teaching most often come from seeing her students excel, especially when she receives correspondence from past students who are now thriving in an occupation they love. “Today was my first day at the Daily Mail Australia. I am writing all day, in my dream job! You were a huge influence to this and have always believed in me. Your teachings and love of literature enabled me to pursue this career and it’s just the beginning. Thank you so much Mrs. McIvor for believing in me.”

“I had a 12-month contract as Director at C&K Whitsunday Kindergarten. When that finished I gradually started working in the office. I had no previous experience in admin or accounts, so it was all a big learning curve. I now work three days a week and am responsible for payroll, HR, marketing and accounts,” she said. What has been your greatest challenge in business? “Like much of the community, the cyclone and its aftermath placed immense strain on our staff and on Noel and myself. A combination of technology malfunctions and a rapid influx of work culminated in a month to forget. Thanks to our hardworking team and understanding customers, we got through this challenging time.” Do you have a personal mantra that you live by? “Life is what happens while you’re making other plans” Where is the most interesting place you have ever been and why? “Italy was amazing with its culture, history and architecture. Visiting places I’d only ever seen in the movies (like the Vatican, Colosseum, Florence, Venice, Pompeii).”

Proserpine Water Park

Splish splash water fun will hit Proserpine in June after council recently awarded the tender for construction of a $1.7 million Water Park. The new water park will be a free facility and in conjunction with the free swimming pool, will greatly enhance the liveability of the town for our youth and families and also attract visitors that would previously not have come to Proserpine. A new water park is a great first step in revitalising the Proserpine district with the caravan park, golf course, tennis club, bowls club and swimming facility all nearby. The design of the Proserpine water park has utilised many lessons learnt from the installation and operation of the Bowen water park to ensure a durable and low maintenance facility. This will be the first project delivered from the Proserpine Masterplan which was adopted late last year and there are plenty of other negotiations going on behind the scenes

with external stakeholders to activate other projects. TP Aquatic Constructions were awarded the contract to design and construct the Water Park which will be built adjacent to the Proserpine Swimming Pool. The winning contractor specialises in water parks and swimming pools and recently completed the new water park at Cannonvale Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday, utilising many local contractors. The concept design chosen by council includes the latest in water park features with a focus on more interactive water play areas and slides. Construction commenced in late February with a completion date of mid to late June, depending on the weather. GLENN CLARKE GLENN CLARKE IS PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL CANE GROWERS ASSOCIATION AND A FOURTH GENERATION FARMER. HE CONSIDERS HIMSELF TO BE ‘ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE BEEN BORN IN PROSERPINE’ AND HAS 400 ACRES OF SUGAR CANE ON THE EDGE OF TOWN. “Having been raised here, I spent most of my childhood and young adult life on the farm and exploring the islands,” said Glenn. Now married to Andrea and with three grown-up children of his own Glenn has witnessed the local farming industry change over the past 30 years. “Every year is different. New information and technologies are continually being developed and the industry is constantly evolving” Glenn sees how farming is moving into the modern age, but like many, he is concerned with amount of ageing farmers.

“We are all getting a little older and there are not a lot of young farmers coming through. So if you like the idea of becoming your own boss, working outside in the fresh air and raising a family on a farm then it’s something to seriously consider,” said Glenn. With modern technology making the daily life of a farmer a lot less taxing, Glenn says the lifestyle can be amazing! His average day could involve anything from repairing or maintaining equipment, irrigating, driving tractors or even spending the day on the boat depending on the time of the year. A huge advocate for the local farming community, Glenn considers Proserpine to be one of the best farming regions in the country. “In Proserpine we are lucky to have a solid base of long-standing farming families. Everyone is willing to lend a hand, offer advice and even lend farming equipment if required” As a close community, many local farmers enjoy meeting up at local events like the Whitsunday Show where they find a common ground to connect and have a laugh. A time to share stories and enjoy being part of the vibrant Proserpine farming culture.

When Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit on the 28th March 2017, almost 30% of the crop was wiped out. It has taken our local farmers many months to regenerate their land and repair infrastructure, so many are hoping 2018 will return to normal yields. “With any farmer I think the biggest challenge is managing the

variables you can’t control like the weather,” said Glenn. As we almost mark a year since the highgrade category four cyclone hit our region directly, many in our community are still effected. It is however, inspiring to see our hinterland renewed, our crops growing and the voices of our local community, like Glenn, reporting positively about the future.

FOR ST CATH’S YEAR 7 STUDENT, ISABELLA BRUCE, SAILING HAS BEEN A PAST-TIME SHE HAS SHARED WITH HER DAD SINCE SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL. “I started sailing with my dad on his yacht when I was 3. Then when I was 7, I started sailing optimist on my own with the Port Denison Sailing Club in Bowen” she said. In January this year Isabella placed in the top 9 sailors under 12yrs at the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships and since then, she has been picked for the Australian Optimist Development Squad (AODS). This is a huge achievement for her and will open up many opportunities with sailing, making new friends and travelling. “At the end of 2016 I had never left Queensland and now, through sailing, I have been to SA, NSW and am going to VIC in March. In October I will be going to represent Australia in New Caledonia and then at the

start of 2019 I will be going to Tasmania for the National Titles,” said Isabella. At the training camp, held in Adelaide this April, Isabella will meet the rest of the Development Squad. She is excited to meet her team as making friends is a huge part of the fun where she practices at the Port Denison Club in Bowen. “While I am racing I don’t talk but after the race I go find someone to talk to. On the rigging lawn where all the boats are lined up after the racing, we all talk and play around. I have made some really good friends through sailing and even when we race each other we are still good friends,” said Isabella. CORE LIFE MAGAZINE SAT DOWN WITH ISABELLA TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER PASSION FOR SAILING. Tell us what you love most about sailing? Sailing takes all the weight off my shoulders and I just concentrate on winning the race. For me, it is so exciting, especially when we sail over to Stone Island, off Bowen. Paul, who is one of the coaches, drenches us with his water gun. I also love to help out with the green fleet which is a club for kids that have just started learning to sail. What are the competitions like? Competitions are always fun because you get to celebrate afterwards. It is really crowded at the start of a race and you have to try and get good air to get away from everyone. Sometimes it gets scary when the wind picks up and the

waves go higher than the top of your mast. It can get dangerous when everyone starts to capsize and drift away, and the coach boat has to go save them. Since I’ve become a more experienced sailor I have only capsized 3 times. I have also fallen out a few times but we wear a life jacket. What have been your biggest challenges in sailing so far? Bowen doesn’t have a strong current so I find difficult when I go to a competition with a strong current and I haven’t sailed there before. Soon we will be going to Gloucester Passage to practice sailing in strong tides so that will help. I would like to thank my dad for being my coach, for taking up his spare time every Wednesday to coach me and for taking me to competitions on school holidays.

I was very Blessed to grow up with an identical twin and the best parents in the world plus two older brothers so it was a very busy household. I am passionate about providing a good veterinary service to the Whitsunday District and also about fast tracking a cure for Cystic Fibrosis which is a chronic illness that deserves a lot more support. My hobbies include golf and catching barramundi and coral trout. What do you specialise in? I specialise in soft tissue surgery and ophthalmology but really enjoy mixed rural practice. I’m Scott Reid. I was born and raised in the Rose and Rodeo city of Warwick, South West of Brisbane. I attended Warwick State High School before heading off to Brisbane to attend the Queensland University of Technology where I studied surveying and obtained the degree Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying). I then returned to Warwick to work with a local firm where I learned and honed my basic skills of survey. Times in Warwick were not busy and this allowed me to take the time to learn many aspects of a small business and how it relied on relationships in a smaller community. This gave me a great appreciation of how important it was to always complete my work to a professional high standard, on time and on budget, as news travels fast in smaller communities. During the next 7 years, I married my beautiful wife Kelli, and had two wonderful children, Jayden and Georgia. As time passed, Warwick was not moving forward at a rate of knots and it was time to move on. So in 2003 I packed

up my young family and moved to Proserpine. We bought a block of land and built ourselves a house and have now been living in Proserpine for 15 years. My wife works locally and my kids went to school here. We were both brought up in a smaller town and enjoy the small community. During my time working in the area I have seen many changes and been involved in many developments. My roles have been varied from working as a field surveyor to managing survey crews to running an office. Some of the projects that I have been involved with are, Whitsunday Gardens Estate, Cannonvalley Views Estate, Port of Airlie, Abell Point Marina, Whitsunday Shores Estate, Abbott Point Expansion, Horizons Way, Airlie Retreat and more recently Solar Farms at Collinsville. Outside of work I enjoy fishing and camping, but my real passion is Hockey. I have been playing hockey since I was 12 years old and more recently I have been playing representative Hockey in the Masters. This year I will compete in the Master World Cup in Spain, where there will be approximately 13 countries competing.

Follow a few easy home health checks to monitor our own bodies for changes and spot early signs. Women are recommended to have a general check-up with their GP every year. If you are at high risk of a particular disease, for example, if you have a family history, it is recommended that you get checked more frequently, and at an earlier age. Things you can check at home include: • Skin, monitor freckles, moles and skin blemishes for changes in size, shape or colour or anything unusual such as pain or itch. See your doctor if you notice anything unusual. • Dental care, you can reduce your risk of tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss if you clean your teeth regularly, drink fluoridated water, eat a lowsugar diet, and visit the dentist at least once a year • Mental and emotional health, if you are experiencing symptoms such as intense sadness, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, or have had changes to your eating or sleeping habits, see your doctor to discuss these symptoms. • Cervical Screening Test, this is an important screening test to pick up signs of irregularities that could lead to cervical cancer if not treated. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. As of December 2017, the Pap test has been replaced by the Cervical Screening Test, which detects human papillomavirus (HPV) It is recommended that you have the test every five years until you are 74.

rom Game of Thrones to Fifty Shades, hot and heavy breathing and bondage is making its way from seedy internet sites to mainstream television more each year. But for those who may be sexually shy or unsure how to liven their libido, a bit of a romp on the screens of our rumpus room may not be a bad thing at all.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a perfect example of this. he physical strength of professional athletes is only a small component to their overall success in a team sport. The team culture, connection and attitude are also paramount to success. As the new line-up for the 2018 Souths Whitsunday Shark Netball Team is announced, it is their behavior and beliefs both on and off court that are being developed and embraced. “Our leaders and foundation players envelope those less experienced and set the bar high,” said Margie Sugars “The diversity within our team in skill, culture and experience combined, create a unique and exciting environment that builds rapport and respect. In 2017 we learnt the hard way, that we are our toughest competitor! So this year we want to change that!” The Souths Whitsunday Sharks were formed in 2006 and the team has been playing in different versions of the State League since then. They are now part of the QSNL which is Queensland’s

premier netball competition, featuring the best athletes and providing a launching pad for future elite netballers and officials. In 2018 the team are keen to work with the community, driving the vision of Building Powerful Women. The team plans to promote this message through its clinics and engagement with the community encouraging youth in the region to support and empower each other. This vision is close to the heart of the players and staff and they hope to encourage young women to embrace what is wonderful about every individual and empower one another to strive for their best. FROM MANTRA CLUB CROC, AIRLIE BEACH Sheldon Smith is originally from New Zealand and moved to Australia as a child, growing up in Noosa on the sunshine coast. “Noosa has a great food culture and I’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazing people,” said Sheldon. He first started in the kitchen as an apprentice for the Outrigger hotel chain and then transitioned to Peppers, Noosa. When he came to the Whitsunday region as a relief chef at Mantra Club Croc, he loved the area and the people so he decided to stay. Since then Sheldon has become an integral part of the Mantra Club Croc kitchen and was recently promoted to Head Chef. His years of experience working in a variety of hotel kitchens has fine-tuned his skills as a chef. He brings with him new ideas and an enthusiasm that shines through both his leadership and delicious menu.

Who inspires you as a chef? There have been many people who have inspired me over my cooking career so far, not just chefs. Anyone who shows discipline and dedication to produce the best food they can for the guests. What do you love most about your job? There is so much of my job that I love and I am always happy to walk into work. I love the challenge of the job, the creativity, the high-paced environment, the different characters you meet in kitchens, but above all it’s about being part of a team trying create the best experience you can for the guest. Tell us a little about the food on your menu and what you would recommend your customers try? The food on the menu runs on the moto of funky and fresh with locally sourced produce. We are trying to work on versatility, to create a menu that we hope people will have a hard time deciding what to pick, because each dish has its own separate unique appeal. I would recommend the green tea smoked duck breast salad. For a climate such as Airlie Beach it’s a great light lunch dish or entrée. It has great depth of flavor, very fresh and clean. What is your secret weapon in the kitchen? I can't really think of a secret weapon but having a bit of humour in kitchen is a good way to keep the team happy and producing great food. Tell us a funny cooking story: I guess I would have to go all the way back to my first week as an apprentice and my first fryer oil change. I'll keep it short though and just say that it is best to turn the fryer off before you add the fresh oil to the fryer otherwise you'll end up with flames to the ceiling and a very annoyed head chef when it finally dies down. Mackay’s Premier Annual Bridal Fair is Mackay’s longest running bridal fair and is held on the first Sunday of February. It was first held in 1987 at the old Harbour Lights Restaurant at the Mackay Outer Harbour. It was initiated by the late Russ and the late Bev McLay, a husband and wife team no longer with us today, but who pioneered one of Queensland’s most successful bridal fair events. This year was Mackay’s 32nd annual bridal

fair and is the longest-running bridal fair in Queensland to have been running at the same time for more than 30 years. It may be Australia’s longest-running continual bridal fair as organisers haven’t yet found one which has been operating at the same time each year for longer. Lucy and Jon Dillon took over the running of the Mackay Bridal Fair and have added an additional bridal and event spectacular for 2018, the Mackay Celebrations Showcase. This event is the place to be for any and all businesses associated with weddings, parties and events; and the place to visit for everyone in the community to be inspired for your next celebration. This rustic-themed event will be held at the Mackay Show Showgrounds on Sunday June 10th and will include food vans for a family-day out.
