A STAY, PLAY & EXPLORE PACKAGE 2 NIGHTS ACCOM IN A WATERFRONT APARTMENT AT

TRIP FOR 2 ON People say having a baby changes your life and after six weeks of being a mother, I can confirm, they are absolutely right! These days, it is amazing how well I function after three hours sleep. It’s also amazing the sense of achievement I feel leaving the house with a clean, fed, happy baby. Little Reef Thackray was born through planned caesarean at Proserpine Hospital on Tuesday, 16th May. I opted for a caesarean because he was a breached baby, meaning he was upside down and it would have been very hard natural birth. At first, I was worried that having a caesarean would be considered a cop-out. The words ‘too posh to push’ came to mind. Another side of me, though, felt relieved at not having to go through the pain of labour, plus I knew my lady parts would still be intact!

INCLUDING BUFFET LUNCH

$100 DINNER VOUCHER AT

So, the day before I was booked in for the caesarean, I finished my last day of work and went home to pack my bags for hospital. It felt surreal and I couldn’t help but think; ‘this is so civilized, I feel like I am going on holiday not into hospital to have a major procedure!’ If I had any misapprehension that I was on holiday, however, this was instantly wiped as I was walked through the hospital corridors in my starchy white gown and into the operating theatre where up to ten people were preparing busily. I suddenly realised all these people were here for me. They were here to get this baby out of me! It was at this moment everything became crushingly real. Fortunately, we were in extremely capable hands at Proserpine Hospital. The caesarean went smoothly and my beautiful baby was put safely into my arms. My mum stayed with me as we spent our first three days with a variety of midwifes who were each amazing and imparted their unique baby wisdom onto me before we returned home. It was at this time I realised, having a caesarean is in no way a cop-out. The painful recovery and the intense experience in the operating theatre, I felt, would match most natural births. Since then, it has been a rollercoaster of sleepless nights, friendly visitors, sore nipples and learning curves with my husband and mum by my side. But we have made it! And I feel like we have almost come out the other side. Which is lucky as I have just started back at Core Life Magazine. It’s great to be back at work and I would like to thank the team for not only doing all the extra work while I was away but for jumping up now to rock Baby Reef to sleep while I write my editor’s note. It’s going to be an interesting few months fitting my baby around my life and vice versa, but I know together we will make this work!

ew, n healthy recipes It’s that busy time of year when friends and relatives from places south of Mackay love to come and visit us here in sunny Central Queensland. It’s also school holiday time and for many that means it’s time to fly off somewhere. If you are coming to Mackay Airport to drop off or pick up passengers, remember that the first 15 minutes in our long term car park are free of charge. This offers a great alternative to the front of terminal where the federal security regulations prohibit cars from waiting at the kerb. On Friday 7 July we’re excited to be launching our new Mackay Airport Sports Stars Walk of Fame. We teamed up with Star FM to find out who the people of Mackay recognised as our most popular sporting heroes with ties to the region. What a line up there was! Eventually the top six were chosen. Come on out and join the fun on the launch day or check out the awesome action photos of these sporting greats next time you are enjoying a drink in our Observation Area. The Mackay event of the year is almost here! Make sure you have your tickets to the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Races. Joscelyn O’Keefe ABELL POINT MARINA

Star Sign: Gemini

Star Sign: Sagittarius

Favourite Movie: Dead Poets Society and Pete’s Dragon

Favourite Movie: Dirty Dancing

Favourite Colour: Orange

Favourite Colour: Turquoise

Favourite Holiday Destination: Rural countryside, there’s something peaceful about it. One of my favourite places is Spicers Hidden Vale, Granchester, Queensland.

Favourite Holiday Destination: Anywhere with a pool, great food, good company and cocktails will do me, but strangely going back to the UK to visit family and friends is always my favourite kind if holiday – even when it’s cold and raining, there is no place like home!

Favourite Quote: “Why fit in when you were born to stand out.” – Dr Seuss. “My mind never rests and each and every day presents a new landscape for which ideas are born.” From a bright-eyed press photographer with the Daily Mercury to multiaward winning creative businesswoman, owner of Redhotblue, Jody Lee Euler looks back on 20 successful years in business.

Favourite Music: Ed Sheeran is my favourite at the moment Favourite Quote: Be yourself! People don’t have to like you and you don’t have to care. Tell us something most people don’t know about you: I lived in Germany for a year

“I started with the Daily Mercury fresh out of high school while also juggling time as a part-time gymnastics coach. I moved to Brisbane to study at Design College Australia and freelanced for a diverse range of agencies. When I returned to Mackay, I spent two years in advertising before fulfilling my dream of opening my own creative agency, Redhotblue.

When Joscelyn first came to the Whitsundays as a backpacker after completing her university degree, she fell in love with the beauty of the islands and the chilled out yachting lifestyle. She took an unforgettable three day/two night sailing trip exploring the islands where she snorkelled with Mantarays and saw the Milky Way. When she left, she vowed to return as soon as possible.

“This year I celebrate 20 years in business and feel so proud of what my company and its team have achieved. It has been an honour to inspire the region for 20 years and be recognised through so many business and creative awards at state level. The greatest gift of all is having worked with so many incredible individuals. I love what I do.”

A year later she returned with two childhood best friends and together they secured jobs for the year as hostesses on charter yachts sailing around the Whitsunday Islands. It was here, on the first boat she worked on, that Joscelyn met her (now) husband who was her skipper at the time. “It’s a typical Airlie Beach romance story” she says, “And here I am 13 years later!”

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know. “I love being in my pj’s as early as possible in the afternoon when I get the chance. Many a time our neighbours have popped over to say hi and found me in my night time attire.”

The couple have since had two children who Joscelyn describes as her biggest achievements in life.

How do you balance being a Mum and a businesswoman? “My husband, Bryan and I are proud parents of 2 active girls, Tia and Piper. Life is never dull in the Euler household. It’s funny how the instinct of a parent is to teach our children lessons of life, however if we take the time to notice, it’s actually our children who teach us, sometimes without us realising. Being a business owner means you work hard, and often late into the night, once our girls are in bed. However, it also allows me to have flexibility so I can be a part of all activities my girls embark on. I feel so fortunate that I get to share so many wonderful adventures with them.” 12

Joscelyn is also dedicated to her role as Marketing & Business Development Manager at Abell Point Marina. She is responsible for promoting the marina itself, as well as function venue, Lure, and their new restaurant, Hemingway’s. She is also looking forward to the many other exciting developments planned for the next 12 months. As an individual, Joscelyn certainly has her priorities in order. She works hard but smart and always puts her family first. “My goals in life”, she says, “are to spend time with my family, travel as much as possible, challenge myself professionally, buy a yacht and retire young!” “I am incredibly passionate about the Whitsundays and bringing visitors to our region to experience the paradise we call home.”

Luke Harley MANTRA CLUB CROC – AIRLIE BEACH Star Sign: Leo Favourite Movie: Braveheart or Man on Fire Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Holiday Destination: Queenstown Favourite Quote: “Don’t take a step back, not even to gain momentum.” He may have been born in Sydney, but Mantra Club Croc’s General Manager, Luke Harley, is a Queenslander all the way. Having grown up in Brisbane, Luke worked for his father for 10 years after finishing school at Nudgee College. He also played a promising career in rugby union, seven years for Norths in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Breakers including international seasons with the University of Maine in the United States and a season in England. His varied career led to a life of globetrotting and unforgettable memories, including worked on bungy jumps in nightclubs in Cancun Mexico and Bahamas. He returned to Brisbane where his introduction into hospitality later began at the Palazzo Versace in 2000. His passion for providing top service grew into positions on Hayman Island, the Maldives, Bali and then New Zealand. He moved to Airlie last year with his wife, Teneale, and their children, Hudson and Frankie, to manage the rebranding and build on a broken reputation left by the old Club Croc, unveiling the new Mantra Club Croc which offers modern refurbishments and personalised service. Tell us something most people don’t know about you. “I spent a night in a Mexican jail back in the mid-90s, scariest night of my life but I promise, not as bad as it looks!!”

WINNIN R BUTCHE

Who are some of the celebrities you have met over the course of your hospitality career? “One of the perks of working in luxury locations presented the opportunity to personally wine and dine and interact with some wonderful people like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher at the time, Gordon Ramsay and family, Prince Andrew and Robert Redford to name a few. These are memories that are appreciated and can’t be taken away.” What are your future career aspirations? “To be the trouble-shooter or project and opening General Manager within Mantra Group, to develop into a senior role within the group. This isn’t gifted, it will only be achieved by results, character, accepting change and attitude, which in life attitude is everything.”

WHETHER YOU’VE SPENT THE DAY SAILING AROUND THE WHITSUNDAYS OR WEEKS ON THE OPEN SEA, ONCE YOU’VE BERTHED AT ABELL POINT MARINA, YOU’LL BE LOOKED AFTER LIKE A VIB (VERY IMPORTANT BOATIE). Positioned at the entrance to the spectacular Whitsunday islands, Abell Point Marina has the enviable advantage of being located within one of the most desirable global destinations.

History

Abell Point Marina has long been a major gateway to the Whitsundays for the boating community. The first settler and land owner of the area now known as Airlie Beach was Thomas Abell in 1904. His grandson, Colin, is the author of ‘Three Abell Men’, a book which depicts the region’s history. Mining magnate, Paul Darrouzet, purchased Abell Point Marina in 2013, and was committed to the marina’s name officially being reverted to the original Abell name, with two l’s instead of one, in honour of the Abell family pioneers. He has spent the past four years investing in a multi-milliondollar transformation for Abell Point Marina to become the Whitsundays’ most exciting marina precinct.

Transformation

Along with the re-brand comes significant change to the infrastructure of the marina, with a focus in promoting a world-class ‘destination marina’ experience to visitors world-wide. The newly revitalised marina has quickly established itself as a worldclass destination for boaties; offering concierge services, berthing for superyachts and a vibrant marina village. The Northern Marina Village has been refurbished to ensure a relaxed environment in the midst of a vibrant port while providing easy access to marine services. Developments include the launch of the dedicated Abell Point Marina Heli Taxi service and Sorrento Restaurant’s expansive deck area proving to be the destination of choice for live musicand sunset dining. The South Village marina has transformed into a vibrant arrival and departure plaza for visiting guests. An additional 250 car parking spaces have been created for customers to easily access the new fine dining restaurant, Hemingway’s, and the naturally nutritious Bohemian Raw café. It is also home to Abell Point Marina’s contemporary styled, nautically themed function venue, Lure. With a marina-facing balcony, Lure is fast becoming the venue of choice for any special event or celebration in the Whitsunday region. The introduction of R Marine Crawley’s office provides marina customers with access to a full range of yacht management services. 14 www.corelife.com.au

World-leading

Abell Point Marina is the first global 5-Gold Anchor accredited marina in the world, providing benchmark standards for the Australian marina industry in terms of customer service, innovation and development of marina facilities. With a vibrant marina village, upgraded shore-based facilities and a team focus on enhancing the customer experience, Abell Point Marina is taking the vision of a destination marina to the next level.

Owner Paul Darrouzet says of the accreditation “It is a very momentous occasion for Abell Point Marina as we have taken a previously run down 2.5-star marina to a 5-star marina that now sets a benchmark across the globe. We are based on the doorstep of the best cruising grounds in the world, and our vision is to have a world class marina experience to match.” This honour was then backed up with Abell Point Marina taking a sweep of prestigious awards, the first being Gold in the Major Tourism Attraction category at the Whitsunday Tourism Awards. Abell Point Marina was well represented with several valued tenants and commercial operators also receiving awards, a testament to the quality of operators who call the marina home. Abell Point Marina then took top honours at the ASMEX (Australian Superyachts and Marine Exports) 2017 conference by winning Superyacht Industry Service Provider, a reflection of their commitment to building a destination marina to attract Superyachts in the heart of the Great Barrier

CONFERENCES & EVENTS VENUE GUIDE

WorkthenPlayinParadise Mackay and the Whitsundays are beautiful parts of Queensland to hold a meeting, conference or event. With copious hours of sunshine, naturally beautiful attractions and some of the best food and dining experiences on offer in Australia; it is becoming a location of choice for organisations

thinking outside the square when hosting a memorable corporate experience. Combine your meeting with downtime to explore the local region and your event will become one which will be talked about for years to come.

How to plan your conference Finding the perfect venue for your next conference can be an exhausting task. With multiple options on offer, how do you choose which one is right for you?

Consider the number of delegates

Size does matter, so be sure to find a venue that suits the magnitude of your event. The number of delegates you expect to attend will greatly influence your event venue choice. Consider if you require a seated-style or if a cocktail-style will suffice, as this will open up your options.

Facilities

Ensure the venue has the facilities and services required to host your event. Additional services such as wifi for delegates can be an advantage and don’t forget to cover the basics, such as convenience of restroom facilities, water replenishments and complimentary stationary.

THERE IS SOMETHING ALLURING ABOUT A WATERFRONT EVENT.

Location

Do you require a location next to the airport, with a calming water view or in the city? Choosing an optimal location can impact on the success of your event, and can also save you money on transportation costs.

Food and beverages

Catering is often thought of as a separate element from the venue, however; the two are intertwined. Choose a provider who can supply enough food to keep your guests satiated, while also leaving a lasting impression on flavour and freshness. Most venues have the ability to cater to your requirements, so opt for crowd-pleasing nibbles.

Inspection

Before you book a venue, visit it so you have a vivid picture of what is required to ensure your event is a success.

Knowing that play is the best way for children to learn and develop, Carlie Dyce has created Michima, a Bucasia-based day care centre which empowers children to discover their true selves through mindfulness and movement. “Michima helps children to discover their character and create friendships, to become confident in themselves, their abilities and their goals in life. “We embrace and explore nature through mindful photography and our natural surroundings. To embrace creativity we experiment with mindful painting, colouring, collage and colours. “Mindfulness is explored through meditation and yoga. The programme encompasses a lot of self-reflection improvement and goal setting in meditation. Through yoga confidence is discovered through movements, setting a mindset that each life is unique and the only person we compete against in life is ourselves,” Carlie said. Carlie’s childcare experience began in her early twenties, working in childcare centres in England. She has a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care and after being a Director of a childcare centre she spent a further six years working in family daycare before establishing her own business. As a single-mum of two, Carlie understands how important it is to nourish young minds and bodies as they transition through life. Beau is eight-years-old and Isla is six. They go to Bucasia State School, across the road from Michima. The family daycare educational option made sense for our family dynamics. “Michima helps to give children a creative outlook on life. It is designed to build character through selfexpression, illuminating ego and gain confidence, allowing children to be their true selves,” Carlie said. In a world where technology overload can create hyperactivity and mood-swings in children, mindfulness has been shown to improve mood, the ability to calm down, pay attention and can assist with emotional regulation and cognitive focus. Contact Carlie at Michima to find out how natural play can help your children discover their hidden potential.

Kathleen Dale COMPASS BUSINESS ADVISORY

A

s a business owner, you are generally passionate about one main thing, your business. So while you are getting on with delivering what you are good at, you’ll need expert advice to ensure your business is compliant with all legal requirements. Compass Business Advisory are the experts when it comes to developing compliance systems and cultures to protect your business and the people who work within it. As new laws and regulations are continually introduced, governance and compliance can be a challenge for business owners. Effective corporate governance encompasses both liability risk reduction and robust compliance management systems, to protect people from financial liability and the business from reputational harm. With a comprehensive understanding of compliance, Kathleen Dale established Compass Business Advisory out of a desire to help others. Her experience in the financial and mining sectors combined with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Business Law led Kathleen to develop a business which could help others streamline their practices to reduce liability and increase profits. “Our vision is simply to give businesses owners a better life. We create systems which are easy to execute, they save time and ultimately help to return a greater profit on investment. “We remove the complexity which can come with compliance, developing easy-to-understand ‘house rules’ to improve communication with staff and increase productivity. “Our core areas of focus are in Human Resources, Workplace Health and Safety and Governance. With easy-to-use technology and the complexity of the law broken down into uncomplicated systems, we can reduce the likelihood of breaches of law while creating a safer, streamlined workplace. With these procedures in place, in the event which something should happen, these businesses also have clear pathways to mitigate,” Kathleen said. As a mother of a toddler, Kathleen doesn’t believe there is a secret to success, other than good ethics and hard work. “My husband works away, so running a business while being Mum to a two-and-a-half-year-old certainly presents challenges, but I approach the business with the mantra that it doesn’t run me, I run it. “I walk in the mornings which is ‘me time.’ It helps to clear my head and set me up for a productive day. “I don’t believe I am a work-a-holic, but if you ask those around me they will probably tell you otherwise. I just enjoy what I do, so it doesn’t feel like work. I really enjoy helping others so I will go above and beyond to see their business succeed. “I believe if you have a clear vision and strategy, inspiration and quality partnerships, then your business can take you anywhere, so long as you’re willing to work for it,” she said. Remaining true to her ethics and true to her vision for the company has seen Compass Business Advisory become a local and trusted name in business compliance. To keep the law on your side, contact Kathleen to ensure your compass is pointing your business in the right direction. www.corelife.com.au 33

he time to relax is precisely when you don’t have time for it. Just close your eyes and think, ‘Today, I choose myself.’

Whether you seek relaxation, rejuvenation or simple serenity; Airlie Day Spa offers a full suite of therapies and beauty services to reset your mind and pamper your body. As parents of two energetic young children, new owners, Laura and Scott Lovekin, understand how important it is to set aside quiet time for yourself. “We both work full-time in the business while the kids are at school and day care. On the weekends we make it work by Scott staying home on Saturday, and we both have Sunday off so we can have quality family time together,” Laura said. The couple’s entry into business was as wild as the weather, having signed the ownership papers shortly before the arrival of Cyclone Debbie. However their diverse backgrounds have equipped them to handle greater challenges than Debbie. Laura’s father was a member of the Royal Air Force for 22 years. Following in her father’s footsteps, Laura joined the RAF as a Dental Nurse. She later joined the Air Training Corps as an instructor. “It was very rewarding to see youngsters come in at 13 years old and leave as community-minded adults. Some of the young men and women have 34 www.corelife.com.au

gone on to join the Armed Forces as doctors, interpreters and airframes technicians to name a few roles,” she said. On top of being a Mum and running a business, Laura is furthering her knowledge of the beauty industry by studying a Double Diploma in Beauty and Salon Management through the Australian Academy of Beauty Therapy. Scott was born in Australia but moved to the United Kingdom in the early 1980’s. He worked as a Police Officer in London with 17 years of front line service. He assisted in policing the 2012 Olympics and was one of the first on the scene of the 2005 London Bombings. Scott received recognition and awards from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and former Prime Minister, David Cameron, for his service to policing in London. Airlie Day Spa Whitsundays is open seven days per week to cater to everyone who needs a beauty touch-up or a relaxing pamper package. From Monday to Saturday, locals receive a 10 percent discount on full-price treatments, on production of an ID card with a local address. It boasts a luxurious hair salon, seven serene treatment rooms as well as a relaxation zone; party suite and nail bar. The multi award-winning business is currently a finalist for the Australian Beauty Industry Awards, Queensland Salon of the Year, with the winner announced in August. TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT

eing partners in business as well as in life can present a unique set of challenges, but Jasmine (Jazz) and Dylan Hammond have hit all the high notes since rocking into business for themselves three-and-a-half years ago.

Jasmine and Dylan Hammond

The couple own and manage Total Entertainment, specialising in the supply of quality entertainment, audio/visual solutions and artist management. They were offered the opportunity to purchase an established business, one which meshed with their personal strengths and passions. “Given our skills, our passions and our experience this was the perfect opportunity. Jazz has a management degree and has had a passion for live music from a young age (though she is not a musician), and I have 18 years of hands-on experience in musical performance, sound engineering, audio/visual installations, artist bookings, stage management and theatre production. “We make a really great team, Jazz is super organised and motivated whereas I am really creative and have a lot of technical skills. Our personalities and traits complement each other well in both our business and personal lives and we've never had much trouble establishing a balance between the two since we both share similar core values and goals,” Dylan said. The couple met at a Victorian ski resort, Falls Creek. Dylan had been the resident musician and sound engineer for four seasons, when Jazz appeared for her first season at the new Quay Resort complex as front of house. “It was love at first sight. We were engaged by the summer and worked a further four ski seasons while travelling to other destinations for work during the summer. One of those destinations was Airlie Beach in 2011. Dylan played gigs and I worked on boats and in a café. After a couple of seasons travelling between Falls Creek and Airlie, we decided to make Airlie Beach our permanent home,” Jazz said. The couple’s leap into business was made more challenging by the simultaneous arrival of their first daughter, Willow. Eight months later they fell pregnant again with their second daughter, Layla. The girls are now aged three-and-a-half and two. “The fact that we have managed to continually grow our business and raise two beautiful children largely without any help, I think is an awesome achievement and I'm really proud of us as a couple, as business partners and as parents,” Dylan said. Total Entertainment has grown both in the services they offer for gigs and events as well as with the number of artists the company has available across a wide range of genres. “We take away the headache of sourcing the perfect professional entertainers for any event. Our state-ofthe-art sound, lighting and staging systems set the scene for a memorable performance which looks as amazing as it sounds. “Our consultants are experienced musicians so they understand the event industry and what type of music is suitable for any given event. They make the process easy for both client and artist. We can source any type of entertainment by request and have an evolving group of artists across a wide range of genres and disciplines to deliver exceptional entertainment for both private and corporate clients,” Dylan said. Whether you’re a toe-tapper, head-banger or hipshaker, Total Entertainment can provide quality performance solutions to ensure your event hits all the right notes. www.corelife.com.au 35

The husband and wife team have extensive industry expertise, additionally Jack has 23 years of experience in the furniture and floorcovering industry. This hard-working couple understand that good business doesn’t happen from sweeping things under the rug. “Providing a superior result backed by old-fashioned customer service is what we strive to deliver daily. No short-cuts, just hard work and a dedication to our customers, not only to produce spotless results but also to provide a reliable service they can count on,” Jan said. The cleaning industry relies on results to ensure repeat business. “Good cleaners aren’t cheap and cheap cleaners aren’t necessarily good. Value for money is important to us, which is why our results need to speak for themselves when it comes to retaining our loyal commercial and domestic clients,” Jack said. Another key member of the Etwell Management team is Malcolm Thompson. A carpet technician by trade, Malcolm stayed with Etwell when Jack and Jan took the reins, playing a critical role in the company’s high-level service offering. “As our manager, Malcolm has provided invaluable support to Jack and myself while delivering outstanding leadership to his fellow team members,” Jan said. He used to play football, touch football and hockey, but is now content on supporting from the sidelines. “It was an honour to be able to watch my cousin, Andrea Pirlo, play football here in Australia. At the time he was playing for Juventus, one of Italy’s football giants. He played against the A-League All Stars in front of a capacity crowd at ANZ Stadium in 2014. The atmosphere was indescribable,” Jack said. Jono and L isa Moir GJ GARDNER HOMES WHITSUNDAY

S

he huffed and she puffed, but even big bad Debbie couldn’t blow down the frames and trusses constructed by GJ Gardner Homes Whitsunday, a testament to these local builders who go above and beyond to assure solid workmanship.

In its second year of business, GJ Gardner Homes Whitsundays has established itself as a reliable design and construction company, backed by results you can see and glowing testimonials from happy investors. The success of this business has relied heavily on the partnership of franchise owners, Lisa and Jono Moir, a husband-and-wife team who love to give each other a hard time behind the scenes. Although they strive for balance, they admit that establishing a new business has meant these early years have been more sacrifice than reward. “Working together has been a challenge in itself, prior to owning the business we never spent this much time together each day. We yell at each other some days, it can actually help, and we’re always giving each other cheek. But at the end of the day, we walk away, don’t hold grudges and head home still caring about each other. It has cemented our relationship as I’m not sure how many other couples could cope with the stress of business and still be together at the end of the day. “Have we found a balance? No. Will we find a balance? We are hoping too! Running a business and being successful means a lot of time and effort, so our kids have suffered, but importantly we still find time to try and enjoy some down time and fun activities,” Lisa said. Through word-of-mouth and producing eye-opening results, GJ Gardner Homes Whitsunday has expanded to include two new team members, Michael Neil and Nardeen Rutherford. “Michael and Nardeen have fitted right in like family. They have wonderful personalities and a sense of humour. Our office policy is open and friendly, with a focus on solving problems rather than creating them. The great team dynamic means we take even better care of our clients who now have more people to help their visions come to life,” Jono said. To see what GJ Gardner Homes Whitsunday can create for you, call into Jono and Lisa’s new display home on Stanley Drive at Whitsunday Acres, opening for viewing in July. The home will exude a resort-feel style, to show how a home can enhance day-to-day living. At more than 300 square metres, the home will showcase latest trends as well as quality fixtures and fittings. When planning the build of your next home, remember, it’s gotta be a GJ!

YOUR HOME AND GARDEN IS YOUR PERSONAL SANCTUARY FROM THE EXTERNAL STRESSES OF LIFE. IT’S EASY TO LIVEN YOUR HOME WITH PERSONALITY AND COLOUR WITH A FEW ACCESSORIES, BUT WHEN IT’S TIME FOR A COMPLETE STYLE OVERHAUL, WHERE DO YOU START? LUCKILY, THE MACKAY AND WHITSUNDAY REGIONS ABOUND WITH EXPERTS WHO ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING OTHER PEOPLE’S HOMES MARVELOUS. SO IF YOU HAVE NO BLOOMING IDEA ON WHAT WILL BLOSSOM IN YOUR BACKYARD, RELAX IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT SOMEONE ELSE DOES KNOW EXACTLY WHAT PLANTINGS CAN TRANSFORM YOUR BLOCK OF LAND INTO A TROPICAL PARADISE.

HOT TIP The old saying, ‘less is more’ is as applicable today as it has ever been. If an item in a room no longer serves a purpose, it’s time to go. It can be hard to depart with belongings, even a simple vase can hold a sentimental attachment, but if it’s no longer cute, then it’s clutter and can begin to overwhelm a space.

Before you tackle a bold interior update, be careful not to fall into the trend trap. Remember that a trend is exactly that, hot one minute and not the next. Ensure that the trend you love comes with classic and contemporary undertones and importantly is constructed from trusted materials, as a colour can be easily changed, but poor construction can be a costly mistake. Rose gold and turquoise may be hot this season, but that doesn't mean you need to represent those tones in every room of the house.

L A I P B

HOT TIP Throw pillows are an easy way to transform a tired room with a touch of new colour, but don’t go overboard. It’s easy to pick up one or two comfy new additions every time you shop, but if you’ve no room left on your sofa to sit or you’re covering half your bed in pillows, it’s time for some to go. As a rule of thumb, only buy a new cushion if you’re happy to depart with an old one. Enjoy browsing Core’s Home and Living feature. When in doubt, remember that bad design often shouts while good design is a quiet whisper.

FEELING DESPONDENT PAYING LOTS IN MAINTENANCE HAVE NO PROPERTY HAVE NO SAVINGS HAVE $220,000 IN SUPER

GOOD NEWS: You can build a Residential Property Portfolio in your Self Managed Super Fund. I recently spoke to an old client who was suffering from depression. After a messy divorce he lost his residential investment properties, had little left in savings and was paying a lot in child maintenance. He said “Steve, what is the point in going on – I now have nothing and can’t see myself ever having another house.” His REJUVENATION was remarkable when I pointed out he had $220,000 in Super, was on a salary of $100,000 per annum and his employer contributions to his Super of $9,500 per annum (9.5%) was more than enough to pay off a $500,000 house in Brisbane. If a couple can combine their Super to have a minimum of $220,000 and are on a salary/wage of $100,000 per annum, their employer contribution is sufficient to pay off one of our $500,000 executive homes in Brisbane. Whilst buying an investment property in your own name using equity/cash is the more financially efficient method of building a residential portfolio, do not ignore the possibility of adding to your wealth by utilizing a Self Managed Super Fund to acquire property. -STEVE TAYLOR

stone & wood landscapes WHAT DOES THE ESSENCE OF LIVING MEAN TO YOU? A QUIET CONTEMPLATIVE CORNER WITH A SOOTHING WATER FEATURE TO SLOW YOUR MIND FROM FAST-PACED LIVING, OR A PARTY PRECINCT LARGE ENOUGH TO ENTERTAIN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH BEANBAGS AND A FIRE PIT? However you choose to unwind, clever landscape design can optimise your living space to enhance the quality of your life. Not to mention increase the value of your property. Stone & Wood Landscapes do just that. Owners, Tim and Jodie Heissenbuttel use a combination of intuitive design with experienced construction techniques to integrate external environments with the people who live there. “Essentially it is about creating someone’s perfect place in the world, their own retreat which is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. We don’t offer cookiecutter designs, we work with each client individually to design a solution from scratch to make the most out of their space and to work with the existing home,” Tim said. Graduating from USQ in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts gave Jodie a good eye for great design. Her holistic design approach ensures that each outdoor vision is functional, fun and will continue to flourish in the years to come. “Sensual stone masonry, crafted carpentry, decorative concrete and paving is what we specialise in. We then team this up with considered planting to deliver a spectacular sanctuary. If the idea of nature appeals, we can promote peacefulness with planting to attract birds and butterflies, bringing an element of movement and music to a project. Nothing is out of reach, we will attempt to bring every vision to life,” Jodie said. “We end up working so closely with our clients we end up becoming good friends. We are very lucky that we thoroughly enjoy what we do, creating a beautiful space for someone else to enjoy is what gets us out of bed each morning. It doesn’t feel like work when you enjoy it this much,” Tim said. Tim and Jodie love a challenge. If you have an idea of what would enhance your outdoor living, give Stone & Wood Landscapes a call. Your backyard was made for more than mowing.

Family Matters Ash Rowe and Kaleigh Nixon PRECISE CORPORATION

T

rading time on the tools for time to play with toys, Precise Corporation owner, Ash Rowe, says he wouldn’t have life any other way. He and fiancé, Kaleigh, share a celebration of love and life with their two children, two and a half year old Ariella and seven month old Kash. The couple are excited to also have another son on the way, due in October and are already talking of a possible fourth child. Their family aspirations are met only by those for their business, Precise Corporation, where both Ash and Kaleigh blend running a business with raising a young family. “It takes a huge amount of effort from the both of us and working together as a team is the key. That said, I give credit to Kaleigh in this area, she is such a devoted mother and worker. In the mornings it’s all business, go go go, get the kids to daycare all nice and happy. We focus on managing Precise all day then the afternoons and weekends are all fun. “Now that I’m back in the mines, I spend several days at a time away from the family and business, leaving Kaleigh to run Precise and take care of the kids. Communication is now even more crucial,” Ash said. Ash talks about how the partnership he has with Kaleigh allows them to be effective managers while also making time for their children. “We’ve been together more than four years and have never had an argument, so that helps a lot. We simply go to work and apply ourselves, so when we are at home we can turn off and just be parents. Not to say we don’t talk shop, we just don’t let it consume us.

“We feel the happier our customers and employees are, the happier we will be with our children, and therefore the happier our children will be,” he said. Kaleigh agreed and says that a happy relationship is the key to success in both their careers and at home. “Ash is an eternal optimist and always sees the positive side to everything. He is a devoted businessman, partner and father and always tries to put me and the kids first to make sure we are happy,” she said. Despite building a successful corporation from the ground up and travelling the world, Ash says that meeting Kaleigh was the best thing that’s ever happened to him. “Meeting each other was the most amazing thing that had happened to us, until the births of our children. I get teary thinking about it. I was there to deliver my children and place them on Kaleigh’s chest after birth, the feeling is beyond description. “Our children are quite simply the most important things in our lives and everything is structured around them,” he said. Surviving the mining downturn was a challenge which Precise managed to overcome, through listening to its clients and adapting to changing needs. The hard work and dedication has paid off with a workshop which is now consistently busy. “Our labour hire division has nearly 20 immediate-start positions available. People can visit our website, precise.com.au for more details,” Ash said.

RUN AS 1 for Cystic

Fibrosis

“ON THE OUTSIDE, KARLI LOOKS LIKE A HAPPY, HEALTHY GIRL. BUT PRIVATELY, SHE AND HER FAMILY FIGHT A GENETIC CONDITION WHICH MANY OF US COULDN’T COMPREHEND.” At this time of year, most Grade 12 students are enjoying their school holidays, however on top of being a teenager, Clare Pullen is organising the Mackay and Proserpine ‘Run as 1 for Cystic Fibrosis’ events for the second consecutive year. She founded the fundraising fun-runs last year to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis, in support of her younger cousin, Karli Elder, who was diagnosed with the debilitating condition at birth. Every four days, a child is born with Cystic Fibrosis. There are more than one million carriers in Australia alone and most are not aware that they carry this life-shortening genetic condition. The life expectancy of people with CF is around 38 years. It is the most common, genetically acquired, life-shortening chronic illness affecting young Australians today. “What Karli battles through every day, month and year; most of us won’t experience such trauma in our lifetime. Morning and night she has a nebulizer and physiotherapy to stay healthy. She has to have enzyme tablets every time she eats, up to 40 tablets per day. She has two-week stays in hospital multiple times per year where she has antibiotics through an IV.

“A normal, healthy person, if we miss an exercise session in the morning it’s no big deal, but if Karli doesn’t have physiotherapy and workouts morning and night, she can end up very sick,” Clare said. To register for Run as 1 for Cystic Fibrosis please go to: www.runas1.com. au and visit the Facebook page, Run as 1 for Cystic Fibrosis. There are two lengths to choose from, 1.5km and 5km, and each walk is pet-friendly so you can walk or run with your dog. If you enter before July 15, you will receive a free entry t-shirt or singlet. The Mackay event is Sunday August 27 and Proserpine will be held in November. They are so close. The advancements which have been made are extremely promising. This is a way we can all support a cause which will have such a positive impact on millions of lives worldwide when a cure is discovered,” Clare said. FAMILY FITNESS MATTERS IT WAS ONLY A COUPLE OF GENERATIONS AGO THAT AFTER AN EARLY FAMILY DINNER, MUM, DAD AND THE KIDS WOULD HEAD OUT FOR A WALK TOGETHER. WITH ONLY 2 CHANNELS ON TV, OR NO TV AT ALL HOLDING THE FAMILY’S ATTENTION AFTER DINNER, THE EVENING WALK WAS HABITUAL FOR MANY FAMILIES. Today, with a quarter of Aussie kids weighing in as overweight or obese and more than half not getting enough daily exercise, we need to get our families, and in doing so, our kids, moving. And we need to do it now. Louise Hardy, a senior research fellow at Sydney University’s Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Research Group, says establishing regular physical activity as a normal part of life early on is critical for kids: “This generation of kids is growing up in an environment that promotes sedentary, not active, lifestyles and one where food that’s high in fat and sugar is cheap and plentiful.” The most important role model and organiser in the house for exercise is Mum - another recent study of thousands of families found that woman made more than 75% of the decisions to get active and healthy for the family or partner. The evidence is clear that if Mum is inactive, so is Dad, and so are the kids. Think about that…

According to a paper published in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the less physically active a mother is, the more likely her child will be sedentary early in life. To put a positive spin on that gloomy fact, if Mum becomes active and healthy, there’s a good chance she will influence the rest of the family to be the same. A 2011 study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise found that the exercise habits of people you know have a positive influence on your exercise habits and this was even more influential in a marriage or family environment. Another study, from the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University, surveyed married couples who joined health clubs together and found that couples who worked out separately had a 43 percent dropout rate over the course of a year. Those who went to the gym together, regardless of whether they focused on the same type of exercise, had only a 6.3 percent dropout rate, not to mention the improvement in relationships. The health of your loved ones matters, so lead the way and get active for, and with, the people you love! - Corey Whibley

Lucky Colour: Red Lucky Day: Friday Racing Numbers: 2.3.6.5. Lotto Numbers: 2.15.26.34.40.22.

Not a good period for sharing confidences but it could be quite exciting in business matters. Keep away from arguments and discussions about matters you feel strongly about. It should be a good period to get people to take notice of your ideas and a very positive time in your career matters. Someone from your past could re enter your life now. Your too busy imagination could get you into situations that you really should avoid, it might not be the best time to speak your mind just now.

Some accident-prone aspects operating in your sector so take care with machinery. If you have tried hard in the past now should be the time to get some results and gain from it. Nervous tension can cause disputes wiser to avoid trouble rather than provoke it, travel could bring unexpected outcomes, not bad but different. Some could gain a financial jackpot or lottery. Watch out where money dealings with other people are concerned trust nothing you cannot see.

Travel plans could be widely discussed with loved ones and staying in one place seems impossible for you just now. Much better period health wise and more energy for living. It should be difficult to make too many mistakes during this period although there is a tendency to get upset over nothing. Some totally surprising news should reach you very soon.

Not the best time to take up sailing or water sports but a good time to see into family problems and try to sort them out with a minimum of fuss. Some luck in career matters coming up. An excellent period for those with ambition and anything can be achieved by positive action. For those who have lost a lot of ground recently a change to regain past glories. It can be a period of sudden changes both in interests and companions.

Not a good time for business matters but be very weary of committing yourself into anything at the moment. Love life could go through a period of strong feelings and possibility of arguments. A very romantic period in which you could be falling in or out of love with mad speed. You need a special good luck to be there when things happen so you can benefit from it. It could be a good idea to let others do the thinking during this period, you will get the chance to excel later on.

If you are not careful with your love life you might get caught in a torrid and very short-lived love affair that will do nothing to your ego. Business matters should be talked over with experts. If you really know what you want now is the time to do something about it. Things that you have been wishing for could now eventuate; maybe you should look into some of your impulses if they do any good.

Increase in most things in your life even the size of your family could be in question. Happy news from far away to many and pleasant memories and reunions for most.

Tread very carefully during this period as accidents could happen if you rush around. Make sure that everything you use is faultless and keep away from electrical appliances. Some luck with business matters. If you turn on the charm luck will do the rest. Don’t get involved in love affairs of others particularly your work mates. News from a distance could change many of your plans.

Some of you could find yourself forgiving and forgetting something that has been on your mind a lot. Happier times with loved ones and a good period for business involving properties. Not wise to lend or borrow and look for a hidden motive in the actions of someone close by. In career affairs you tend to attract the right sort of support you need just now.

Very good luck around you so make sure that you are there to take advantage of the situation. Also your love life is in for a boost and good friendships could be started during this period. Things might not move as fast as you would like them to but matters are changing in the background and will be affecting you soon enough. Not a good period for confidences so keep your secrets to yourself.

Because of your work situation you might have to pick up and go on a moments notice. Be tactful with loved ones or you could find yourself in the dog hours but good news is on its way. During this period your financial luck should be much better and it might be a good idea to try something different now.

Big things happening around you; travel, real estate deals, some could be lucky in games of chance. Good news from the family front reasons to celebrate with loved ones or good friends. Although love affairs look good, someone could ask you for help and this could make you feel resentful.

ADAM AND EVE HAIR ARTIST : Amie Chalmers MAKE UP ARTIST : Joanne Dromgold

MODEL : Chloe Van Bergen

Adam & Eve [hair.face.body] and the salon owner, Amie Chalmers’, mission is to exceed clients’ expectations and bring experience, style and art to you, starting with your hair. One style at a time, we aim to provide a level of service and care to raise your confidence, raise eyebrows and bring you to the next level. We work with you every step of the way to achieve the look you desire. With the latest styles, high-quality products and a passion for what we do, you’re sure to have a truly revolutionary experience. The goal with the makeover is to achieve Chloe’s desired blonde colour, to lengthen & thicken Chloe’s hair with some of Adam & Eve’s extremely sought after 100%, AAA grade, natural tape hair extensions.

BEFORE

Chloe is a hard working young lady who lives west of Mackay where there isn’t many opportunities to doll herself up. Also, Chloe has been a long standing & loyal client of mine for many years so I thought she would be the perfect person to give the opportunity to have a makeover. 1. The Colour After trialling a darker colour for a little while, Chloe decided she much preferred blonde hair with which I couldn’t agree more. We had already started the lightening process before taking the ‘before’ photo. Keeping in mind that Chloe has darker eyebrows, will have a dark blonde regrowth & lives 3 hours drive from Adam & Eve, I wanted to get Chloe overall lighter but incorporating some different low tones throughout her hair to compliment Chloe’s skin tone while also softening her regrowth as it comes through.

Amie and the Adam and Eve team are absolutely unbelievable. They are talented and have remarkable customer service. Amies knowledge, experience and ability to explain to me the processes and products she is using is comforting and refreshing. She has a complete understanding of the products she is using and this gives me piece of mind as I know that Amie is looking after me and my hair. Amie & the Adam and Eve girls offer their expertises on how to care for my hair and extensions properly outside of the salon, also. I choose to drive three hours to see Amie at Adam and Eve Hair Face Body for a number of reasons; the products, the services she offers and the amazing hair she produces to name a few. The level of quality and time Amie puts into my colour & extensions is a true testament to her talent. She ensures that my experience is informative & comforting when I am in her salon. I am always looking forward to my next visit. I am ALWAYS complimented on my colour & extensions. I couldn’t recommend Adam and Eve any higher.

2. Extension Application After we have rinsed, shampooed & lightly conditioned Chloe’s natural hair with Hydrate wash & finish, we started the process of blowdrying, smoothing & sectioning for the correct placement of our human hair extensions. I strategically chose extensions with the same low tones & matching blonde colours for a perfect blend & flow of colour. Chloe now has a long, full & glamorous look!

3. Styling

AFTER

Once the extensions were in, secure & comfortable we used a GHD to create red carpet inspired ‘beach inspired’ curls. As we moved up each vertical section we lightly sprayed Sebastian Trilliant for heat protection & shine, before curling the hair away from Chloe’s face. Then finishing each section with a light spray of Sebastian Reshaper hairspray for a strong hold & humidity resisting factors. Through the crown & parting area we shook in some American Crew Boost Powder to assist in backcombing to promote volume & a soft curvature shape. Finally, we spritzed Sebastian Shine Shaker for a radiating shine for once again a glamorous finish!

WHEN IT COMES TO TEAMWORK CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS HAS TO EXCEL CLARITY IS A FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS AND IS QUEENSLAND’S LARGEST INDEPENDENT AUDIOLOGIST. CLARITY’S COVERAGE STRETCHES TO ALMOST EVERY CORNER OF QUEENSLAND. CLARITY’S MACKAY CLINIC IS THE BASE FOR CLARITY’S OPERATIONS IN CENTRAL QUEENSLAND AND NOT ONLY INCORPORATES THE MACKAY CLINIC WITH A PERMANENT LOCAL AUDIOLOGIST, BUT ALSO VISITING SITES IN PROSERPINE, SARINA, BOWEN AND COLLINSVILLE. Heading up the Mackay team is Practice Manager and Mackay stalwart Sharon Hassett, Patient Liaison Jordan Sutcliffe support, Mackay-based Audiologist Esther Kim and Clarity’s Principal audiologist and owner Grant Collins. Grant is based in Townsville but commutes to Mackay to assist with patients on a weekly basis. Established by Grant and his wife Sara in 2008 this small Queensland business has grown to include permanent sites in Mackay, Townsville and Brisbane and close to 30 visiting clinics. This means everyone pitches in when things get busy or circumstances demand it. When Practice Manager Sharon Hassett’s son Ethan was badly injured in a quad bike accident earlier this year, the team rallied allowing Sharon to spend more time in Brisbane while Ethan receives initial treatment and rehabilitation at the PA Hospital. Sharon still manages the Mackay clinic while in Brisbane and is back on a fortnightly basis until she returns fulltime later in the year. “Clarity is a family”, Grant Collins said. “The success of our business relies on our dedicated and expert staff and they are the biggest part of our

success. That’s why we look after them to the best of our ability.” Established in 2011 the Mackay clinic celebrates 6 years in September. Grant believes the success of this and other clinics lie in the five ethical practice principles he established when commencing Clarity. Many people don’t realise that the audiology industry in Australia is unregulated. That’s why Clarity decided to help lead the industry and establish five ethical practice principles, which ensures the best diagnosis and treatment at the right price.

Accurate diagnosis Evidence-based recommendations and treatment Ethical and transparent pricing No commissions or sales targets Industry independence

Clarity not only diagnoses hearing loss and prescribes hearing aids but is also the only provider in Mackay performing cochlear implants. Their implant program is about removing the barriers of cost and geography to this vital technology for people with profound deafness. Clarity can support cochlear implants including assessments and mapping at all our clinics including regional and remote Queensland and the initial implantation can take place in Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns or the Gold Coast. Most costs under Clarity’s implant program are covered by Medicare and the most basic private health insurance hospital cover. Your chosen ENT specialist may require gap insurance excess as well depending on your cover.

The warning signs of hearing loss “I’m always trying to figure out what’s really going on. Always having to fill in the gaps, but never getting all the details. It’s like trying to do a jigsaw when I don’t even know what the picture is, and I’m missing one of the vital middle pieces.” The above quote is from Melbourne author Chrissie Perry’s award-winning book Whisper. While not specifically about hearing loss I think it captures so vividly the distress we find many of our patients feel when they come to us with hearing loss. We usually get checked and prodded for visible disorders quickly. Your sight’s not a good as it used to be, we go to the optometrist. That blemish looking slightly different, off to the skin clinic. That pain in your lower back, off to the physio. But hearing we tend to ignore for as long as we can—usually until our family intervenes and insists we get our hearing checked. But what have we missed in the meantime and what could

we have done to prevent the disorder getting worse? More and more research supports early intervention for hearing loss, for adults and children as well.

lead to delays in speech development and ongoing learning disorders potentially affecting them for the rest of their lives. Adults

In adults, hearing loss can lead to social isolation, depression and there’s potentially a link to dementia as well. As hearing diminishes people tend to start to withdraw from conversations and social activity as it becomes too difficult to keep pace with conversations. This affects not only the sufferer of hearing loss but their friends and family who become frustrated with the inability of the person to hear, participate and respond appropriately.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have a hearing loss, and a hearing evaluation with a registered and fully qualified audiologist is recommended:

It’s not just the health effects we need to be concerned about. The financial costs affect individuals and communities as well. The World Health Organisation has found that people with untreated hearing loss earn, on average, less than people with normal hearing.

• Turning the TV or radio louder than others

Undiagnosed and untreated hearing loss in children can

• Difficulty hearing in background noise • Difficulty understanding women’s and children’s voices • “I hear fine, but it sounds like people mumble!” • Speech sounds are muffled

• Asking people to repeat; saying “huh” or “what” often • Tinnitus or ringing in the ears • Ears feel stopped up Children • Doesn’t respond to name being called

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

• Doesn’t turn to locate sounds after 6 months of age • Doesn’t respond when back is turned or from across the room • Speech and language is delayed If you are diagnosed with hearing loss, it’s great to know that there are now many options in treatment and in hearing devices to assist. We carry a full range of devices from all manufacturers including invisible, extended wear Lyric hearing aids right through to cochlear implants for those who are profoundly deaf. Missing a piece in a jigsaw puzzle is frustrating. Missing pieces of life and activities around you is devastating. If you suspect hearing loss, don’t delay talking to someone about your options.

How did Carol save over $4,500 on her hearing aid? By spending $150 on a second opinion! Carol came to Clarity for a second opinion after having undertaken a free trial of a top of the range hearing aid with another provider.

Carol chose a hearing aid costing just $795 which provided the same result as the $5,500 one! Carol saved $4,555 by getting a second opinion from Clarity.

After the free trial Carol was told that the cost for her hearing aid would be $5500. Carol decided to book a second opinion $150 comprehensive hearing test with Clarity.

At Clarity Hearing Solutions our focus is on treating hearing loss, not selling you an expensive hearing aid.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE ROLE OF YOUR GUT The “GUT” – is far more complex than a simple food processing machine. Your gut has capabilities that surpass all your other organs and even rival your brain. It has its own nervous system, known in scientific literature as the enteric nervous system, and often referred to as the “second brain”. This second brain is made up of 50-100 million nerve cells, as many as are contained in your spinal cord. The immune cells residing in your gut make up the largest component of your body’s immune system; in other words, there are more immune cells living in the wall of your gut than circulating in the blood or residing in your bone marrow. And there is a good reason for the massing of these cells in this particular location, which is exposed to many potentially lethal microorganisms contained in what we eat. The gut-based immune defense system is capable of identifying and destroying a single species of dangerous bacterial invaders that make it into our digestive system when we accidentally ingest contaminated food or water. What is even more remarkable, it accomplishes this task by recognizing the small number of potentially lethal bacteria in an ocean of a trillion other benevolent microbes living in your gut, the gut microbiota. Accomplishing this challenging task ensures that we can live with our gut microbiota in perfect harmony. The gut is also the largest storage facility for serotonin in our body. Ninetyfive percent of the body’s serotonin is stored in these warehouses. Serotonin is a signaling molecule that plays a crucial role within the gut-brain axis: It is not only essential for normal intestinal functions, such as the coordinated contraction that moves food through our digestive system, but it also plays a crucial role in such vital functions as sleep, appetite, pain sensitivity, mood and overall well-being. BOTTOMS UP understands this complexity of our gut and offers 5 systems of care to assist your body to gain homeostasis to reclaim your health. FOUR THINGS MUMS NEED TO CHECK IN THEIR FOUR YEAR OLD’S BITE WHEN YOUR FOUR-YEAR-OLD SAYS “CHEESE!” AT HER BIRTHDAY PARTY, TAKE TIME TO NOTICE IF HER BITE IS RIGHT. Most children see a paediatric dentist by age two. By age four, your child may be referred to an orthodontist for severe tooth and bite problems. 1. CROWDED BABY TEETH Baby teeth should have spacing between them. Overlapped baby teeth are a sign of severe crowding. The permanent front teeth are larger than the baby teeth they replace and need adequate space. 2. CROSSBITE OF BABY TEETH Crossbite occurs when upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth. If your four year old is experiencing difficulty chewing or bites her cheeks, she may have a crossbite. A crossbite can cause grinding and wearing down of baby teeth. Long term, a crossbite will create an abnormal growth pattern. 3. LOWER JAW SHIFT WITH BABY TEETH Baby teeth out of position can create interference tooth hitting and produce a lower jaw shift. Tooth interference with jaw shifting will wear down teeth and create an abnormal growth pattern. 4. NARROW UPPER JAW WITH BABY TEETH A narrow upper jaw indicates narrow nasal passages. This can create open-mouth breathing and sleep problems. Lack of sleep can significantly contribute to difficulty learning at school.

CORRECTION OF THESE EARLY BITE PROBLEMS IS OF GREAT HEALTH BENEFIT TO YOUR FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD

Early treatment by Dr. Rodriguez will minimize the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment at a later age. For a consultation call

TRUE WISDOM IS BEAUTY Michima, I came about the name which is Japanese and means True Wisdom is Beauty. This was fitting for my program. After going through some tough times my Mum passing of Cancer and helping her through that time I had an awakening. I became mindful of my true self my interests and the importance to learn from a young age your true self , not to live with ego because that is a mask you wear for social society and it will get you no where . I invented a program called Michima for this reason a learning through Mindfulness, creativity, nature and yoga. My background in sport is Australian ballet and Queensland Gymnastics. I have found a passion for mindful photography I think it helps you see our gorgeous world through a beautiful perspective and I love teaching this skill to the younger generation .

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CHILD’S ADULT TEETH RIGHT FROM THE START Once kids permanent teeth start to develop you really need to make cleaning them a priority. These teeth will last your child for the rest of her life. Dentists generally recommend starting regular dental cleaning and examinations once the adult teeth grow in to make sure that they remain healthy and cavity-free. Talk to your dentist to find out when your child should come in for his first visit. Your dentist can help you know exactly how to care for your child’s permanent teeth so that you can end up teaching these skills to your child.

The CDBS provides individual benefits for a range of services including

• examinations • x-rays • cleaning • fissure sealing • fillings • root canals • extractions.

Last year I sat on the sand

THIS YEAR I CHOSE TO STRIDE ACROSS IT Well, ok, striding may be a bit of an exaggeration. You see, when it comes to running, I’m slower than a turtle through mud. But, this year, I wasn’t that same person sitting on the sand. A lot can change in 12 months. In 2016, I was at the Great Whitehaven Beach Run as part of the media team. I’m a freelance writer and have been part of the Core Life Magazine team as a journalist for four years. I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my life. As a teenager, I was relatively fit and represented my province in many sports. I was strong and fast, but I was still ‘the big girl.’ A back injury when I was 16 meant I had to stop playing many of the sports I loved, and from there, I continued to put on weight. So here I was, in June 2016, sitting on the most beautiful beach in the world, Whitehaven. I weighed in excess of 180kg. That’s a number I’m not even comfortable to type now, and in fact, it’s a number I never even shared with my closest friends. Yet here I am, exposing the raw truth that I hid from so many people for so long. A number I was, and still am, ashamed to share.

Despite being overweight, the competitive nature within me still wanted to be taking part in the run. But embarrassment more than anything else prevented me from entering. It took kind words of encouragement from Hamilton Island’s Activities and Events Manager, Stephen Jackson, for me to put this event on my radar. He challenged me to take part in 2017, a challenge I accepted. My initial focus was weight loss, and for that, I had gastric sleeve surgery in Sydney in September, 2016. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it painful? Yes. Has it been worth it? Absolutely, worth every cent. To date, I’ve lost 48kg in nine months. But it’s not even the weight loss that I focus on anymore, it’s all the little things I have gained. To say I was nervous was an understatement. But I was determined to finish. As I plodded my way across the sand, a magical thing happened. Runners who were on their way back ran over to me to give me a ‘side-five’ for encouragement. I started to smile at the warm gestures, and as a result, my pace naturally quickened. They may never know, but their encouragement meant the world to me. As I ran across the finishing line, I could feel my lungs absolutely burning, but receiving that participation medal and seeing the smile on my husband’s face made every bit of pain worth it. If you’re reading this and you’re inspired to try something out of your comfort zone, then this story has achieved everything it was meant to. The Great Whitehaven Beach Run is one of those momentous events that will forever etch marvelous memories in your mind, regardless of your athletic ability. Whether you run or walk, it will be a challenge you will be forever glad you accepted. 14 www.corelife.com.au

TALK ON THE STREET

IF YOU COULD SIT AND HAVE COFFEE WITH ANY PERSON DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I’m s u more re there are storie there s to tell too.

The person I would love to have coffee with is my great grandfather, he was the Attorney General of South Australia and then later a solicitor. He seemed like such a knowledgeable and smart person, I would love to hear his stories. Would love to know more about our family history too, there’s so much that we don’t know about. I’m sure there are more stories to tell there too. Plus we also share the same birthday :)

My Brothers Adam and Dave because they both live over 14000 kilometers away in Dauphin, Canada. I sometimes don’t get to see them for periods of over a year. I’d like to catch up and hear what they’ve been up to. One of my brothers lives in Whistler on the ski-slopes, the other has just had his first child. We’re quite close in age and get along really well, we always make the most of our time together. I took my family over for a visit last August so I think it must be time for them all to come here!

If I could meet anyone I would have to say my Dad of course. He was the most amazing man and I would love to have a chance to meet up with as an adult and share with him everything that has happened over the years without him. He inspired my Mum, my brothers and I to live our lives to the full. To be brave and strive to achieve all our goals. All his grandchildren call him Papa Richie and though they have never met him they have seen loads of photos and videos and we speak of him often. It would be great to tell him how much we all miss him and we think of him every day.

AIRLIE BEACH FESTIVAL

LEO SAYER – THE SHOW MUST GO ON LEO SAYER ALMOST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION. HE IS HELD IN GREAT ESTEEM AS A LIVE PERFORMER AND RECORDING ARTIST BY ALL AGE GROUPS - FROM 6 TO 60. THIS IS AS MUCH DUE TO HIS APPEARING FAMOUSLY WITH THE MUPPETS, THE WIGGLES AND ON THE CHARLIE’S ANGELS SOUNDTRACK, AS THE COUNTLESS HIT SONGS HE HAS WRITTEN AND RECORDED THROUGHOUT HIS 40 PLUS YEARS CAREER. From the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, through New York’s Central Park, the Greek Theatre and Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, the Las Vegas Hilton, Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall in London, to the State Theatre in Sydney, the Hamer Hall in Melbourne and the Olympic Stadium in Chengdu, China; in concert Leo has played the lot! Add to this the fact that he writes almost all of his own material and you can see why Leo is the consummate musical act on record as well as onstage. Gerard Hugh Sayer (to give him his original name) was born in 1948 at Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England. After studying graphic design at Art College, he worked in his late teens and 20’s as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator in London, playing blues harmonica by night in folk clubs. He met co-writer David Courtney in 1971 and shortly afterwards, with a name change from Gerard to Leo, signed a management contract with British 60’s pop icon Adam Faith. The trio’s first success came in 1973 when The Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey based a debut solo album around Leo and David’s songs. 1972’s “Daltrey” led to Adam and David producing “Silverbird”, Leo’s first album release in 1973, which had the breakout hit: “The Show Must Go On” featuring Leo dressed in the costume and white make up of Pierrot. The album and single both hit the UK # 2 slot. Leo’s star continued to rise in 1974 with a second album, “Just A Boy”, the Pierrot image now discarded. From this the singles “One Man Band” and “Long Tall Glasses” (a US # 7), and “Train” became international chart hits. He toured the States and Australia for the first time that year, and the impact of that first tour of Australia has endured to the present day. Further success ensued with 1975’s “Another Year”, which spawned the classic hit single “Moonlighting”. A major turning point in Leo’s career came in 1976 with his premiere American album, “Endless Flight”. This gave him his first US # 1 with “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”, a crossover R&B dance hit which also won him a Grammy Award. Then Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager’s “When I Need You” went on to do the same. The album was a worldwide success, with “How Much Love” also hitting the top of the charts. 72

THE CHANTOOZIES ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S HOTTEST BANDS, THE CHANTOOZIES, ARE BACK! THE GIRLS ORIGINALLY FORMED FOR A ONE OFF SHOW AT THE RENOWNED MELBOURNE UNDERGROUND NIGHTCLUB, WHERE THEY RECEIVED AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE AND THEIR FIRST RESIDENCY. A recording contract with Mushroom Records soon followed and The Chantoozies found Top 10 success with their first single ‘Witch Queen of New Orleans’. Touring extensively, they delighted audiences across the country with their hit songs – ‘Wanna Be Up’, ‘Kiss & Tell’, ‘Walk On’,‘He’s Gonna Step On You’ to name a few. They went on to sell over 300,00 records, receiving Gold and Platinum status throughout the 80’s and 90’s. The Chantoozies shared the stage with many top Australian acts including Noiseworks, Boom Crash Opera, James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite, Hoodoo Gurus and a 38 show Australia wide tour supporting international act Billy Joel. After taking time out to pursue their individual careers, the girls reunited for ‘25 Years of Mushroom Music’ at the MCG and then again in 2007 for the national ‘Countdown Spectacular’ tour. The last few years have seen The Chantoozies release two new singles, appear on countless TV / radio shows and continue to wow audiences throughout Australia (most recently, with Rick Astley and also as part of the ‘Gold FM Concert’ series) with their special blend of rock and pop. To quote Empire Touring, “These girls certainly know how to throw a fun party!”

Remarkably, she shows no sign of slowing down, let alone stopping. In 2014 Ceberano became the first Australian woman to be inducted into the Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) Hall of Fame. Joining such luminaries as Don Walker, The Easybeats, LRB and The Angels. Time Out Melbourne got it right when they wrote “(the) first thing you notice about Ceberano is her energy, which actually sends the atoms crackling as she walks in the room. Flashing eyes, a ready roar, warm and funny – she’s your dream conversationalist”. Whether it is that soulful voice, her charismatic nature or exotic looks: Kate’s earned her ‘Australian icon’ status. Kate first found fame with her funk band I’m Talking. I’m Talking are acknowledged as the band “who pioneered New York-style art pop in Australia during the Jurassic Period of Pub Rock”. The group was managed by Ken West, now famous for being co-founder of the Big Day Out. Kate followed that up the following year with the award for Best Female Vocalist (1985). Kate won Best Female Singer (1985) at the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards. Like many high-profile musicians, Kate Ceberano uses her celebrity to support and bring awareness to many causes close to her heart; for many years Ceberano has been an Ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This role sees Kate help raise funds and awareness about an illness that affects so many lives. Over the 9 years Kate has been a supporter of the NBCF, Kate has also personally donated album royalties to the cause. “I like to be as involved as I possibly can in causes I feel strongly about,” Ceberano said of her appointment. “Yes I am a musician, but if I can do more to help others then I will.”

EAT TO BEAT WORLD HUNGER The initiative has created a global movement, mobilising Mexican and healthy food lovers across Australia and the world to ‘eat to beat world hunger’. Zambrero founder, philanthropist and medical doctor, Dr Sam Prince, says: “Plate 4 Plate was built into the core of our business to ensure we are giving back and making the world a better place.” “15 million meals is an incredible milestone and just one stepping stone in our goal to donate a billion meals by 2025.” The Plate 4 Plate initiative works on a simple but effective concept that allows everyday Zambrero customers to ‘feel double good’ by enjoying fresh, tasty food and contributing to a great cause at the same time. For every burrito or bowl purchased at a Zambrero restaurant, a meal is donated to someone in need. The meal is made from rice, lentils and
