It Was One Of Those Days It was one of those days. Of course, it was a Monday. After too many vodkas on the weekend, I was determined to start my week off the right way, so I blended up a chocolate protein shake. I didn’t have any milk, so water had to do. Yeah, it tasted pretty nasty, but I swallowed with eternal optimism that somehow this shake will make me healthier and of course, ultimately prettier with some kind of superwoman powers. I work mainly from home and on the road, so a lazy ponytail and ‘whatever pants I can find’ is a typical work uniform for me. But not today, today I had a meeting with an actual person, so I put on a cute white top. Of course, it had to be white. I gave my shake a swirl to mix the warm melty bit at the top with the cooler icy bits down the bottom, but somehow those super powers had taken effect sooner than expected and my man-like swirl ended up sploshing about a third of my shake into my lap. On my white top. Of course, it had to be white. I looked at the damage, yeah, there was no coming back from that one. I scurried into the kitchen and remembered that I’d put my wash cloths and tea towels in the wash that morning. Of course I had. I looked at where the paper towels usually sit and saw an empty roll. Later when I regaled this story to my husband he chortled and said, “I used the last one this morning.” Of course he had. So now I’m reaching to the highest shelf in my pantry, cursing, trying to open a new packet of paper towels as I feel the chilly liquid dripping down my leg onto my foot. I dabbed furiously at the brown stains, but given that I had added coffee to the shake, there was no coming back. As I threw my clothes into the washing machine and

rushed down the hallway to find another outfit, I had a ‘first-world-problem’ moment where I found myself thinking about how crappy my Monday was becoming. But then I stopped and had a moment of gratitude that I hope I never forget. I spilled food on myself because I’m fortunate enough to have food to eat. I have more clothes than I need. I live in a warm, comfortable house. The vast majority of beautiful humans on this planet don’t live with the same luxuries as most of us in Australia do. But more poignantly, there are those in our very own community who also struggle to find a roof over their head and food to eat. Despite the fact that our government is spending billions on the housing crisis, homelessness is on the rise. It’s not a problem for tomorrow, it’s one for now. It’s not ‘somebody else’s problem,’ it belongs to all of us through human decency and social responsibility. Also, it can happen to anyone. A traumatic experience, death in the family, the loss of income; there are many varied circumstances which can lead to homelessness. If it happened to you, what would you do? Where would you turn for help? Would you ask for help? Many of the people living on the streets today were struck by a personal tragedy and lacked a support system to get help when they needed it. So what can we do? I certainly don’t have all the answers, I’m merely in a position to ask the question. But I do know that a little kindness can go a long way. We have an abundance of incredible organisations in the Northern Rivers doing all they can to assist our homeless. The Byron Bay Community Centre, One Roof Byron, the Shift Project, Liberation Larder; are just a few champions who rely on volunteers to help those less fortunate. A first step is to donate to these worthy causes and get involved. If you can’t afford a financial

contribution, volunteer some time. A second step is to clear your mind from some of the stigma associated with the homeless. Do you avoid eyecontact, quickly look the other way or cross the street? Next time try a smile. Take a few minutes to listen to their story, or kindly leave them some assistance in the form of a warm blanket, some food or some money. It doesn’t have to be a lot, that small gesture may very well make someone’s day. It may even go toward giving someone the confidence they needed to make a positive change in their life. You know the warm feeling you get when someone gives you a compliment? Well this is passing those amazing feelings on, but in a much more meaningful way. Imagine if everyone decided to show a bit more kindness every day, perhaps there wouldn’t be a homelessness problem at all. Make it your mission to make someone smile, the world can never have too much kindness and compassion. I hope you enjoy our August and September edition of Byron Life Magazine, our team have enjoyed putting together another eclectic combination of community stories showcasing our local champions. Our destination in focus is Lennox Head where we meet a fantastic bunch of business-owners who keep the head humming. We profile two champion paddle boarders who have taken their paddling passion all over the world, and we have a sensational lineup of music, festival and art stories; again showing the diverse and talented artistic culture we cherish here in the Shire. If there’s one article not to miss, it’s the Be Happy Music Club. The heartwarming story is bound to fill your heart and leave you with a smile on your face. Be good, be kind and enjoy this beautiful Byron life.

RADIOTHON Powered by volunteers

supported

by you! VOLUNTEERING STATISTICS ARE A GOOD INDICATOR OF COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS IN OUR REGION. With more than 20 percent of people in the Northern Rivers region undertaking some kind of volunteer work, it’s fair to say that this region has a strong connected community. Bay FM has kept our community connected through the airwaves for 28 years. The latest McNair National Listener Survey* data reveals that more Aussies are listening to community radio than ever before, as 5.7 million people tune in each week to the 450 plus radio stations across the nation. Listeners tune-in to their local radio stations because they want to hear local information and news, local voices from presenters who sound like ‘one of us,’ hear broadcasters who support local and Aussie music and give an independent voice. Listeners want program diversity and if you still want to hear something different, community radio presents the opportunity to get involved and create your own unique program. This year’s Radiothon, on air from 20th to 31st August is the time when our listening audience can financially assist Bay FM to continue building community connectedness, by taking out an annual subscription. This year’s theme celebrates the power given to Bay FM’s volunteer presenters and to our other essential volunteers who keep the station up and running, which can only happen with the financial support of community.

10 www.byronlifemag.com

And this year, Bay FM will also be giving as well as receiving, because that’s how we roll in this region! For every subscription received, you will choose one of four local community groups, representing the environment, women, youth and the homeless and Bay FM will donate $5 per subscription to that group. It’s all about sharing the love and respect for the volunteers in our region who are making a difference. During Radiothon Bay FM is once again offering a substantial Major Prize of a travel experience and other major prizes including a Daivelo 250 Watt Euro Style E-Bike from True Wheel Cycles, Mullum Music Festival Gold Family Pass, a custom-made mid-length surfboard drawn at the end of the first week from Brett Munro Surfboards, daily prizes of $99.9 Santos shopping voucher, new subscription categories for community groups and more. Most importantly, your subscription ensures the continuation of a connected community supporting the activists, artists, free thinkers, leaders and community groups that work tirelessly in our region to make a better place for us all to enjoy. Subscribe online at bayfm.org or phone the station on 66 807 999. ‘share’ Bay FM Radiothon related social media posts and keep connected by tuning in to the station with heart – almost perfect at 99.9. *McNair Yellow Squares Community Radio National Listener Survey July 2018 for the CBAA (Community Broadcasting Association of Australia).

Therapeutic storytelling

medicine for the soul

“Stories are an integral part of our humanity, so it should not be surprising that ‘story medicine’ can offer creative strategies for life’s challenges. They are an invaluable tool for therapists, teachers and parents.” Susan Perrow and Kristina Ivatović An author with collections of therapeutic stories in 10 languages, Susan Perrow is a local teacher shaping the way Australia and the world uses therapeutic story-telling for education and healing. The mother-of-three came to the Northern Rivers in 1973 to study teaching at Lismore. From the beginning, she was drawn to the wholesome and artistic approach of Steiner Education; teaching head, heart and hands; and the respect for giving children time to have a childhood. Using these principles, she started Periwinkle Children’s Centre in a hall in Bangalow and with much fundraising, later built the preschool building on council land in Sunrise Beach. She was also one of five who founded the Cape Byron School. “It was a passionate and memorable time of turning grand visions into reality,” she said. As her teaching work gravitated toward the field of story-telling and story writing; she completed her master’s research on the importance of storycentred education. Southern Cross University then invited Susan to create a story-telling module for its School of Education. 18 years later, it is still running. After witnessing first-hand the effectiveness of therapeutic story-telling, Susan is now a full-time author. She has recently returned from Europe where she launched Spanish, Slovenian and Serbian translations of her books as well as running seminars to teach therapeutic story writing. She shares an experience she had with a disabled woman from Croatia, Kristina Ivatovic.

“While in Europe, I met up with a young woman with muscular dystrophy who had been helped out of depression by a story that encouraged her to accept the use of a wheelchair, something she was very opposed to. She proudly shared her news that she is now fighting (with great success) for disability services at her university in Croatia, resulting in ramps and an elevator which have now been installed on the campus,” Susan said. Susan shares how story-telling can be a useful tool for parents as well as therapists and teachers, with stories helping her sons through various stages of their lives. “My first experience of stories making a positive difference was with the ones I wrote for my sons, and now as a grandmother I get to continue this. The challenges facing parents and teachers may be as complex as long-term abuse, separation anxiety or bullying, or as simple as a child’s aversion to hair-washing time. The first story I ever wrote was called ‘Bubble Bear’ and it helped my youngest son ask for his hair to be washed, instead of screaming and fighting the experience. “Working with a selection of metaphors chosen for the specific behaviour or situation, the story form offers a healing medium that allows the listener to embark on an imaginative journey, rather than being lectured or directly addressed about the issue. A therapeutic story may heal, help a lot, help a little, or sow invaluable seeds for future change.” To find out about how therapeutic story-telling can help you, a friend or family-member get through a challenging time, visit susanperrow.com for details on Susan’s work and books.

Don’t worry

Be Happy

If there’s one thing this world can do with more of, it’s happiness. Especially in communities where children are faced with unthinkable hardship every day.

In 2018, the Byron Bay Guitar Festival is supporting the Be Happy Music Club, naming it as its charity of choice for this year’s event. The Be Happy Music Club is an official Australian notfor-profit organisation (recognised by Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Organisation - ACNC) with a mission to bring music to children with a disability, promote social inclusion, musical ability, self-expression and enjoyment. What was once a volunteer organisation is now able to pay musicians in Fiji providing this service, supporting rural communities with opportunity and an income for the villages. Festival Director, Nick Sergi, is thrilled to support the organisation which promotes positive social change through music. “The reason I wanted to support this charity is right there in the name, Be Happy! I want to be part of that club! I love that BHMC, and MMAD that we supported last year, promote positive social change through music. Founder, Andre Comaru, is an amazing human; he puts an enormous amount of time, money and resources into BHMC and is truly passionate about his cause; helping children with disabilities in Fiji through a supportive music program. He busks regularly and even donates his birthday beer money to his own charity,” Nick said. We chat to Be Happy Music Club’s founder, Andre Comaru, to learn more about the work he does making people happy through music. 12 www.byronlifemag.com

“I grew up in a very musical environment. Mom and Dad are massive music lovers and for that reason, music has become my fuel since an early age. It's like my blood, I can't live without it.”

it along all the way. Their faces changed straight away, I could see big smiles and I knew music took them to an amazing place, far away from their troubles.

Plato once said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” The inspiration for creating the Be Happy Music Club started in August 2016. Andre lived in the Fiji Islands for 10 months and it was after his fourth month when he was invited to play some tunes for the children from the Fiji School for the Blind, in a little village called Watuaqa, near Suva.

“That session was the most amazing experience I ever had with music. After the session, I spoke with the head teacher and said; ‘I had the best time, can I please come once per week.’ She answered: ‘We had the best time too, please come twice per week.’”

“I asked the children what kind of music they liked and they all answered REGGAE. So I played ‘Three little birds’ by Bob Marley, and they sang

This was the beginning of the Be Happy Music Club, which is an ongoing project, helping around 90 children living with different disabilities through music in three locations: Watuaqa, Sigatoka and Savusavu. The music sessions are provided by local Fijian musicians. Andre’s goal is

COMMUNITYUNITY

As an official Australian not-for-profit and endorsed by the Australian government as a deductible gift recipient, the Be Happy Music Club can receive gifts which are tax deductible. Visit @behappymusicclub on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date with the great work of Andre and his team, and drop a few dollars their way to support the great work they do. Make sure you find Andre at this year’s B.B. Guitar Festival on 6 and 7 October at Byron Bay Brewery. Have a chat with him, learn more and donate what you can! You can also make a donation of your choice when you purchase tickets on line to the B.B. Guitar Festival via byronbayguitarfestival.com.au. to bring music to all special schools throughout the Fiji Islands in the next five years as well as to Indigenous communities in Australia. “I feel very thankful for having met Nick. He has supported us from day one without hesitation and it means so much to be the charity of choice for the Byron Bay Guitar Festival. Having Nick’s support is recognition in what we have been achieving and it means there are more people out there, who believe that music can change people and for this reason it can change the world. I feel blessed to be part of it. “Byron Bay is a very lucky town for having such an amazing music culture and this excellent festival. Great artists, great music and great vibes. If you love music, you cannot miss it,” Andre said. To get an appreciation for yourself of the wonderful work this project brings, look up the Be Happy Music Club on YouTube. Watch the beautiful rendition of ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ which has been re-written using lyrics based on what made the children feel worried or sad. It’s one of the most beautiful things you will watch.

Celebrating our Year 12 Student Leaders

Mullumbimby High School Student leadership is a valued tradition, one recognised for students to apply knowledge and positivity through a structured support system. Student leaders play a vital role in guiding and supporting students across all years while also contributing to the organisation of school events. We chat to the student leaders of Mullumbimby High School to find out what it means to them to be a student leader as they head into the second-half of the year.

ANNABELLE WOODS Being a Year 12 Student Leader; “To me it means being a role model for the younger students, someone that can help and offer support to all. I want to be someone that younger students can approach for support whenever it is needed. It is also about setting an example that showcases all the valuable qualities of our school.” Voted as female school captain in 2018, Annabelle Woods is planning to take a gap year after graduation to backpack through Europe. As a fond student of history, she is excited at the prospect of exploring all the places she has spent the past two years

JACINTA THOMPSON Being a Year 12 Student Leader; “To me, it means to be able to help other students. I also enjoy helping the community and have had the opportunity, as part of the Student Representative Council, to make regular visits to Coolamon Retirement Village where I was fortunate to write the life story of some residents.” As a House Captain, Jacinta Thompson excels in sport; having become the 2018 champion in cross country, swimming and athletics. JACQUELINE MARKS ART DRIVEN BY ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS By Ian Browne www.shamrocknewsmusic.com

ocal artist Jacqueline Marks grew up in the north of England and immigrated to Australia 23 years ago. She is now a resident of Middle Pocket in Byron Shire. In the past few years Jacqueline has volunteered at the Mullumbimby museum, and she enjoys socialising around Brunswick Heads. She has exhibited in group and solo shows regionally. Her art practice extends across multiple disciplines where the dichotomies of ebb and flow is expressed within her art. Some works could be likened to a visual representation of music, both structurally and rhythmically. Her experience in design has led her to experiment with a more varied form of arts practice, centring on creatively imagined landscapes - where she likes to go beyond boundaries, visiting the macro and micro, containing reference to deep space and cosmological interests - along with harmonies and ratios that connect physics, music and art. Jacqueline has practised art in a variety of contexts, including fashion design in England, and furnishing design in Amsterdam. After

moving to Australia, she was involved with fashion and theatrical productions in Adelaide. Jacqueline also engages in philosophical and metaphysical enquiries within her art works. Her work has been collected privately, and she has an ongoing commitment to her Arts practice. Jacqueline Marks, “Living here I feel a sense of place and a strong connection with people and land. I obtained my Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts in the Northern Rivers in 2013, embracing the teachings and culture that surrounds this area, and I found an opening for my own experiences of past, present and even future ideas to be expressed within this field of practice. I get a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction in my exploration of new ideas and the techniques within my creative practice. Structure and flow, and a combination of the two, have all immersed within my work, and is relevant to the subject matter I am painting at the time.” Kellie O' Dempsey described how, “Jacqui’s body of work, ‘Polar Extremes’ had its origins at a funeral she attended, where upon she heard Bach played live on the cello. Jaqui

communicated how, “in that moment I suddenly wanted to paint the shape and colour of music.” A teacher of Jacqui’s, Hobie Porter, described her work ‘Polar Extremes’ as, “deceptively abstract, it is driven by environmental concerns such as the effects climate change is having on Arctic and Antarctic regions. When we know this, it seems obvious that her application of paint is not an excuse for chaos, but a set of carefully orchestrated outcomes that translate into glacial drifts and ice sheets. The dominance of Jacque's icy blues is logical, for example. In this instance, the glass itself is a synonym for ice.” Jacqueline has been published in various art magazines here and in the UK and was a selected finalist in a few local competitions in locations such as the Kirra Community and Cultural Centre. She has single and joint exhibitions each year. Jacqueline’s work also featured in ‘The Murwillumbah Art Trail’ on the 18th May this year, with a group called “somewhere else”. The title of her selected works is “Beyond Boundaries”. Enjoy Jacqueline’s art @ artmostudio1.wixsite.com/jacquelinemarks

COMMUNITYUNITY

Art 4 Art’s Sake

The need is there for artists to exhibit and the opportunities are shrinking with galleries closing all around us. Local artists, Marika Bryant and Soren Carlbergg, have partnered to launch the inaugural contemporary art exhibition, Art 4 Art’s Sake. A part of the local art’s scene for many years, Marika had the vision to bring local art and artists back to the School of Arts at the Federal Hall. The prospect of a niche exhibition combined with the thriving appeal of Federal and a hinterland drive makes Art 4 Art’s Sake a fun event for art-lovers and families alike. “The exhibition will be a collaboration of six contemporary artists displaying more than 10 works each throughout the Federal School of Arts and the Federal Church. Everything on display will be for sale and our intention is to make art affordable, so art-lovers, locals and visitors to our region can take home a very special piece of Byron. Not only does the exhibition give local artists a platform to display their works, but food and beverages will be available over the weekend, fundraising for the Federal Hall itself. Local musicians will be playing to add to the chilled-out arty vibe and raffles and lucky door prizes will add to the fun. A weekend drive to the hinterland to check out some art, listen to music and eat great food, we hope the community will embrace this opportunity,” Marika said.

Artist Spotlight - Meet three of the exhibition’s artists. Marika Bryant

“Poetry plays a major role in my art practice, embedding words, either the whole poem, or parts thereof, into my artwork. Sometimes hidden or obscured, perhaps a reflection of where I’ve been, where I would like to visit, where I would like to guide others. I love to breathe life into a painting, hoping to inspire the viewer to spend a little longer in front of one of my works. An emotional endeavour to create a visual that in turn creates an emotion. I aspire to be a communicator. I hope to make a difference.”

Soren Carlbergg

“My passion for art was developed over my juvenile years, encouraged greatly by my mother who saw my obsession with drawing and thought there was something there worth pursuing - (thanks mum). During my years at the National Art School and through some of the great teachers there, my eyes were truly opened to the meaning and function of the essential elements of art (painting) in colour, shape, design and texture. The drivers for my creative process stem from this life today; the environment, social issues, the world. Sometimes I just have fun.”

Jacqueline King

“I came to glass later in life after a massive upheaval leaving the corporate world as a senior executive and moving from Sydney to the Northern Rivers in 2004. With time on my hands and wounds to heal, glass offered me a mesmerising medium to re-train my brain and has dazzled me ever since, literally changing my life. I’m very fortunate to have had my work recognised nationally and internationally and now practice and teach students from all over Australia and the world.”

The September line-up of six artists: Mahala Magins (painting); Marika Bryant (painting); Soren Carlbergg (painting); Jacqueline King (glass art); Caroline McKay (print) and Nikky Morgan-Smith (painting). A vehicle to drive art to the public, don’t miss the inaugural exhibition of Art 4 Art’s Sake. Many beautiful country halls lay fallow with a death of art usage; wouldn’t it be special for the Byron community to bring art back to the halls and give emerging artists a chance to exhibit?

LENNOX HEAD

y r a d n e g Le d a e H x o n Len Loved by seachangers, surfers and sunseekers alike, Lennox Head may have lost many of the hippies that poured into this coastal town in the 70’s, but it never lost its charm. The famous right-hand point break that draws international surfers fosters one of the best surf cultures in Australia, but this serene holiday destination is now abuzz with life with a cute coffee culture and burgeoning art scene beckoning you to stay a while. But delve deeper into the culture and you’ll find a community of fascinating people going about their daily business, soaking up the gratitude of living in one of Australia’s best coastal towns. Everyone has an amazing story, you only need to ask. We discovered one of Australia’s best surfboard shapers, an awardwinning chef who has cooked for British Royalty and a lawyer who used to be a rock star, just to name a few.

SURF’S UP Lennox Head is one of the iconic National Surfing Reserves. You’ll find the world-famous break at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach. You can watch surfers carve up the waves from Pat Morton Lookout which is also a platform for hang-gliders. The Lennox Longboard Classic is held every August.

DID YOU KNOW? In February 1962, two Kiwis stumbled upon Lennox Head, now generally regarded as Australia’s finest righthand point. The first photos were published in Surfing World in 1966, followed by a sealed road in 1972, and since then surfers have flocked to the break.

A SPOT OF HISTORY The first explorer into the area was Captain Henry Rous who seemed to be keen to name everything he discovered after Charles Lennox, the Duke of Richmond. After naming the Richmond River at Ballina after the Duke, he proceeded to name Lennox Head also after the Duke. The village was established for the timber and land, and dairying and cane farming followed.

DISCOVER MORE HISTORY ON THE LENNOX HEAD HERITAGE TRAIL. The Lennox Head Village Heritage Trail takes you on gentle stroll through the village, showcasing some of the most iconic places in Lennox Head as well as acknowledging significant places that have Aboriginal significance and heritage. The first 10 points of interest on the trail can be viewed via a comfortable walk around the village, starting at Williams Reserve near the community centre and finishing in the main street. Lennox Point is the 11th stop and is a nice walk south of the village on the beach.

Put on your joggers – our top weekend walk THE COASTAL WALK – LENNOX TO BALLINA If you’ve headed up to the Pat Morton Lookout to watch surfers and hang glider’s do their thing, there is a picturesque 3.5 hour walk from the lookout at Lennox Head to Ballina, past rocky headlands and breathtaking beaches. *Hint – if you don’t want to walk the 13km back again, grab a shuttle bus back with Blanch’s Bus Company. Marcus and Elizabeth Da Silva

Capturing the essence of the North Coast lifestyle in your backyard has never been easier. Marcus and Elizabeth Da Silva from Tranquil Pools and Landscapes make the prospect of coming home to your own private oasis simple, with combined pool and landscape packages to enhance your living. The couple owned and operated a local landscaping and fencing business when they connected with experts in pool construction. “With advancements in pool technology, energy efficiency and water balancing which is good for both you and the environment, it was inkeeping with our ethos for health and wellbeing for both people and the environment so it was something we wanted to be a part of. Tranquil Pools and Landscapes was born in 2009 and we are still just as passionate now about pools and landscaping as we were then,” Marcus said.

What is the most challenging project you have completed? “Well, there have been a few! But one which stands out was when we were asked to build a pool for a celebrity couple whose home would appear on a renovation show. No pressure! It was a wonderful experience with a great result and happy clients. “We also created a beautiful free-form pool for a young man who has physical challenges as a result of an accident. The pool was to assist with his therapy and came with engineering challenges for access while still complimenting the beautiful natural surrounds. We stood back at the end of that creation extremely proud of the result.” What do your clients have to say? – 6 Stars for Tranquil Pools

What pool and landscape packages can you provide? Our key components are flexibility and communication, because every client is different. Marcus enjoys meeting with the clients to put together unique packages to transform their home and lifestyle. Examples of packages can range from a fiberglass pool with glass fencing, soft landscaping and a simple-to-operate robotic pool cleaner; to a concrete pool with an infinity edge and an in-floor cleaning system which can be controlled from a smart phone. We employ full-time locals to ensure a continuous job flow and our clients have confidence in our team.”

“Marcus and his team agreed to a tight schedule for a complex pool project. Everything Marcus said he would do, he delivered on exactly, without fuss or bother. His placid nature belies an amazing efficiency. Our pool and landscape project was a complicated, wet-edge pool on the edge of a steep hill. We are very happy with the pool and the service by Marcus and can highly recommend Tranquil Pools. It was the most amazingly stress-free experience in an industry where stress is synonymous with building a pool.”

the chef the shaper Cornwall in the south of England is renowned for many things; of course, its famous pasties immediately spring to mind; but a lot of Australians don’t realise that it has one of the best surf cultures in the world. Local surfboard shaper, Frank McWilliams, was spending a summer shaping in this classical part of the world, when he stepped into one of the local café / restaurants for a coffee. The café was owned and managed by award-winning chef, Libbë Gray, (now McWilliams-Gray), who had cut her hospitality teeth in a classic Cornish pub owned by her parents. It seemed an unlikely match, but the chef and the shaper hit it off immediately. The Lennox Head local and the English rose were practically inseparable, sharing adventures across the world before settling in Franks home region in the Northern Rivers. No matter where they travelled, Libbë and Frank were able to apply their areas of expertise in remote areas of the world. In Nicaragua, Frank trained a team of carpenters to shape Ecofoil surfboards out of balsa at a workshop in Managua; while Libbë consulted for the luxurious Morgan’s Rock Ecolodge; a coastal resort located on a 4000-acre expanse of Nicaraguan jungle. “It was an incredible experience because I didn’t speak Spanish and they didn’t speak English so everything was communicated through a translator. Working with and storing things like fine wine and coffee in the heat and humidity of the jungle was a massive challenge,” Libbë said. The couple own and manage popular café and restaurant, Coast @ Lennox Head. Libbë is the head chef and has designed a menu featuring many influences from Cornwall, Europe and the Mediterranean; with modern and delicious twists. She has trained with some of the top chefs in Britain and cooked for royalty including Prince Harry and Prince Andrew. Now, she brings her culinary class to Lennox Head. WHAT’S ON THE MENU? A pleasant surprise is that Coast @ Lennox Head dares to be different. Instead of raisin toast for breakfast, there is the Cornish favourite; saffron bread. The menu has a strong seafood influence to take advantage of fresh, local produce, similar to cuisine found in Cornwall. Plentiful portions, well-executed dishes and a fusion of flavours that comes from an experienced chef at the helm. There is also an extensive list of wines to choose from to compliment the experience; with vintages from both Australia and Europe prominent. “We found a niche for our type of food here in Lennox Head; well-flavoured and hearty proportions; classic food but served elegantly. We want our guests to have the full dining experience; so we provide full table service with attention to detail. It’s old-school fine dining with a modern and relaxed twist ,” Libbë said. There are even treats available for your four-legged friend. Lennox Head is a very popular dog-walking destination, so Libbë and Frank provide a special menu for canines.

WHEN IS COAST @ LENNOX HEAD OPEN? Closed on Tuesdays; every other day of the week is open for both breakfast and lunch from 7:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays are now also open for dinner, a new addition to the restaurant, catering to market demand for a special evening destination. The restaurant will re-open at 5:30pm on these days and stay open until late with changing dinner specials weekly. DON’T MISS – Sunday roasts! With all the trimmings, you won’t want to miss a roast at Coast! Mouthwatering favourites including pork with crackle and caramelised apple, or slow-cooked beef with Yorkshire puddings. Each Sunday there is a different roast available. Phone (02) 6687 6109 to book your seat at the tastiest place in town.

TURNING SUNSHINE INTO SOLAR POWER With OCEAN AIR ELECTRICAL “Lennox Head has an amazing community, where people on the street stop and say hello. We’re living in a place where we want to raise our family and with our business’ sustainable mindset, we’re doing our part to keep this place as beautiful in the future as it is now.”

Crawling around in ceiling cavities and below buildings provided a young Simon O’Connor with adventurous places to explore. His dad was an electrician, and from a young age, Simon decided he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He worked across Australia in many industries as a tradesman, but it was when he moved to Lennox Head that he decided to bring all that knowledge and experience together to start his own business with fiancé, Laura Wright. The couple met in London 10 years ago whilst travelling and remained great friends for several years before the spark ignited in 2015. They moved to Lennox soon after and started Ocean Air Electrical; combining their strengths to bring both service and sustainability to the local area. “With Laura's skills and knowledge in sustainability (Master of Environment) and clean green desire within the Northern Rivers community, we found a niche that aligned with our ideals as well as the place we wanted to live and raise our family. Developing a business around solar is the perfect fit,” Simon said.

Ocean Air Electrical specialises in solar design and installation. The family-owned business is passionate about the environment and helping the local community to become less dependent on energy generated by fossil fuels. Its their dream that one day the community and country will be completely powered by renewable energy. They install standard grid solar systems as well as battery storage and off-grid solutions. Simon commented, “The best days are when I am on the roof of a home with ocean views, installing a solar system. It is very rewarding as you feel you are making a difference to our planet, for my kids and their kids.” Simon and Laura balance running the business with raising a young family. They have two daughters, five-year-old Maeviella and ninemonth-old Kalani. The couple were recently engaged, with Simon proposing at Boulders Headland, and are looking forward to marrying in the Byron hinterland with their two ready-made flower girls by their side.

“With two girls not yet at school and a business to run we often walk around like zombies! As well as looking after the business’s administration needs and running around after our girls, Laura is currently on maternity leave from her position as a science and technology teacher at Byron Bay Community Primary School. Definitely a super-mum! I do my best to balance the pressure of running a new business alongside a growing family and we provide each other with plenty of support,” Simon said. There are only three days of the year that the couple don’t see eye-to-eye, during State of Origin, with one of them originating from northof-the-border. Other than that, they love their adventures in nature; from snowboarding in Canada to surfing in Indonesia. But at home, they are happy to be living the tropical dream, here in Lennox Head.

JENSENS SOLICITORS

MEET THE FRIENDLY TEAM! Whilst the legal framework surrounding how we live and work is complex and often confusing; Jensens Solicitors are committed to delivering a superior service in a way that is easy to understand. Being resolution-driven is at the forefront of what they do, with a desire to deliver quick results. Based in Lennox Head and with a recently-opened office in Alstonville, we meet the team experienced in conveyancing, wills and estates, criminal and family law.

VINCE BOSS

Criminal Solicitor Having spent 15 years working in disability and aged services and some time with juvenile justice, Vince Boss became aware that many people didn’t have the ability to advocate for themselves. Often vulnerable members of the community who found themselves in a difficult situation were left without a voice. “Since being admitted as a Solicitor in 2004 I have spent most of my working life in the court rooms in the Local, District and Court of Criminal Appeal. I feel inspired to continue in this area of law as there is satisfaction in assisting those in need to obtain a good outcome.”

What is your role at Jensens Solicitors? “My role and Jensens Solicitors is to firstly give proper advice based on all evidence that is relevant to a matter as well as helping our clients to separate the emotion from their matter and to look at their situation objectively. “The bottom line with all my clients is that I am upfront with them. Many people do not want to hear what the consequences of their actions will be, but, they need to hear it. I will give my clients honesty and reiterate to them that the best way to approach their individual circumstances is to be honest from the start. When not in court, Vince enjoys time out on his farm. “Kicking back with some music or enjoying the quiet; I am happy either way.”

MICHELLE STEWART

Admin and Conveyancing Clerk With a varying administration background across many industries, Michelle Stewart was both excited and nervous about the prospect of working in the field of law. She had spent more than 15 years working across sales, mechanical and accounting industries when she approached this new opportunity as a challenge. “I was very appreciative but nervous since I had no previous knowledge in the legal industry but thought it was time to give myself a challenge, take a new direction and open a new chapter in my life. Since being with Jensens Solicitors more than three and a half years ago, I am constantly learning about the law and the interesting ever-changing area of conveyancing.”

What is your role at Jensens Solicitors? “Mainly to keep everything in order; not just the paperwork, filing, answering the phone, collecting the mail, banking, paying the bills, replying to emails; but also keeping the staff happy. The supply of coffee, morning tea, toilet paper and stock of lollies on the counter is just as important! “I believe a great business comes with a great boss and Kirsten Miller has certainly taken on this role with her down-to-earth positive attitude and rock-star personality. I love my job, co-workers and coming to work every day not many people can say that!” Michelle also has a keen love of animals and prior to starting at Jensens started her own house and pet-sitting business. “The added bonus of meeting and spending time with people’s furry and feathered friends gives me great satisfaction to know that I can be trusted to take care of their pets in their own environment where they feel safe and comfortable.”

Owner and Principal It’s not often that people will choose to study law after their 40th birthday. But for Kirsten Miller, it was a challenge she was ready to undertake. Her three sons; Sam, Jasper and Jarrah, were her motivation. The mother-of-three had recently become single and despite having had a fun and exciting career as a singer, she decided it was time to find a ‘real’ job. While doing her Law Degree at SCU, she joined Jensens Solicitors in 2012 under the mentorship of former Principal, Paul Pellandine. At the time, she was raising three young sons, studying full-time, working full-time and ultimately, undertaking her GDLP so she could practice as a lawyer. Now owner and principal, Kirsten bought the practice from Paul and added business-owner to her impressive achievements. “Having negotiated the rocky road of family law myself during my own separation, I understand the emotions and often difficult path that can follow. I tend to gravitate toward family law because I empathise with the feelings associated with family disputes and I truly want to achieve

What is your role at Jensens Solicitors? “Well I am the boss and being the boss has its perks. Paul and Michelle bring me coffee and food during the day. I assume it’s because I’m so important doing lawyerly things, but, it may just be so I don’t leave my desk and go and annoy them in their offices…it’s too close to call! “But seriously, law can be very confronting and it’s important for our clients to feel comfortable with the process, that they are clear and focussed and understand how it all works. What we do is serious and so important in the lives of our clients, so it helps that we are able to laugh and have fun and take a little of the stress out of our client’s lives while they are going through difficult times.” Family is Kirsten’s greatest love. “My children, parents, sisters, Paul and my George are amazing; without their support I would not have been able to get through my studies and get to do the best job in the world.”

What is your role at Jensens Solicitors?

Solicitor

Amy’s legal career started in 2000 as a paralegal; working on family law matters, conveyancing, wills and estate matters, leasing, some commercial matters and some criminal matters. 12 years later, she was assisting a graduate solicitor with preparation for a court hearing. With Amy’s broad knowledge across many areas of law, the graduate was surprised Amy didn’t have a law degree. That was the push that Amy needed to take her career to the next level. “The graduate solicitor had previously worked at Southern Cross University and was so adamant that I should be a lawyer, she arranged for my enrolment in the Bachelor of Law course with SCU. Jensens was the firm I started my paralegal career at, and it has always provided accessible, sensible and sound legal advice to the Northern Rivers community.”

“I will be working from our Alstonville office which opened at the start of August. The services we provide include conveyancing, family law, wills and estates as well as providing legal services relating to the use and management of public land (which is Council owned community land and Crown Land). I have worked in Local Government Property roles since 2013 and have developed a significant interest in the proper management and use of public land.” When she’s not working, her family is her greatest passion. Amy and her husband have five children between them, aged 9 to 16-years-old. “Our spare time is spent with kids, sport and visiting our family and friends. My husband and I also love cooking and eating out when we get the chance.”

PAUL PELLANDINE

What is your role at Jensens Solicitors?

Solicitor and previous owner of Jensens Former owner and principal of Jensens Solicitors; Paul Pellandine has 20 years of experience in the areas of family law, wills and estates and criminal law. He is well respected by his peers and provides clients with a clear and precise understanding of the law. He has a wellearned reputation of having broad expertise across many areas of law, with the number of repeat clients speaking volumes about the loyalty and trust his services have built over the years. “I enjoy working with families and businesses to get the best results possible in court. As a business, we take pride in attention to detail and prefer to get an outcome for clients in a short amount of time.”

“Now that I’m not the boss, I have to do as I’m told and make numerous cups of coffee for Kirsten. My experience is often called upon for a range of dispute resolution and agreements, so our clients can resolve an issue quickly and move on. That has been the cornerstone of our beliefs, to resolve matters in an efficient timeframe allowing people to move on with their lives.” Outside of work, Paul has developed a range of passions and pastimes. He likes flying drones to see the world in a better light and has race horses that he enjoys watching, even better when they race fast. He also enjoys mechanical work on old cars to keep them going, which are then used for weddings and special events.

trends to make

your house a home As the way we occupy our living space evolves with each passing year, new innovations and trends arise to enhance the way we live, thrive and relax. From new technology to make our lives easier to creative ways to bring the outdoors in, this year’s trends are focused on making us feel great as well as looking aesthetically pleasing. Designed to make your lifestyle happier and healthier, here are some of the best trends evolving this year.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

HEALING HOUSEPLANTS

Think sustainable home design is just a fad? Think again. Green is growing and growing and growing. Climate and carbon, human health and high technology are among the top trends expected to drive the global green building market in 2018. In this day and age, we want a house that makes us feel good as well as look great.

Indoor plants are trending again, not only for aesthetics, but because they can help our health. Plants purify the air and can also reduce stress, control humidity and lower sound pollution. With a burst of oxygen, plants in the bedroom can promote better sleep.

EMBRACING THE OUTDOORS Blessed with a year-round temperate climate, more families are wanting to fuse their indoor and outdoor living options. Modern landscape design can incorporate outdoor areas which provide the same comfort as indoors but the invigorating feeling of being outside. Incorporating large, comfortable seating options and outdoor kitchens, these indoor / outdoor areas become the new focal point for socialising. ECO-GARDENING

There's been a rise of ecoconscious gardeners who are seeking a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way to garden. More people are being drawn to the idea of clean, sustainably sourced food from the back yard. Gardening practices that benefit pollinators have been gaining popularity as people are getting the message that bee and pollinator populations are dwindling.

AS TOUGH AS TILES Tiles have never really gone out of fashion, but with increasing trendy designs coming on the market, we are finding they are becoming the flooring of choice throughout the whole house, not just the kitchen and bathroom. Because they naturally keep houses cooler, people are opting for tiles in their bedroom to help them sleep. NAIL THE RUG-HANGING TREND Would you swap your artwork for a rug? Statement rugs are trending on Pinterest which promote hanging the humble floor accessory on the wall. These hand-crafted statement pieces add interest and texture to a room, and the bolder the better. Flick through Pinterest for some ‘Pinspiration’ and you’ll find some gorgeous images which nail the look.

fire-retardant and baby-friendly. No synthetics, no petro-chemicals, no fake mass-production. Nothing can compare to the original which is ethically made and environmentally sustainable,” Milton said.

But for Milton Cater, founder of The Bangalow Rug Shop, his industry provides more than decadent design. It provides a living for many people across the world.

With many years of experience, the Bangalow Rug Shop are expert dealers in old and antique rugs and textiles. These genuine works of art have been sourced from around the world, some textiles dating back more than 1000 years.

“There are no negatives, and that is a beautiful thing,” he said. “There is a special adherence to tradition which is lacking from many modern cultures. These carpets are handmade by families who have been gifted the knowledge from many generations. Because many of our carpets are one-off handmade designs, they become future heirlooms for your family, while supporting a living culture in another part of the world. “No animals are harmed in the making of these carpets. Interior inspiration seamless for style

“Incredible interior design doesn’t happen by accident.”

Everyone deserves to live in a beautiful space that brings joy and comfort every day. The reality is, however, that many of us aren’t experts in how to execute that seamless sense of style, cohesiveness and comfort. Luckily, our favourite haven of homewares in Mullumbimby is now offering home styling services. Cactus Hill Project can transform your home to maximise space and style; or take advantage of their expert eyes to enhance your home for sale.

STYLED TO SELL Two things are crucial in selling a property; the right price and correct presentation. A good estate agent will set the price and Cactus Hill Project will style to sell. The team will immaculately dress your property to impress your target buyers, helping your home to stand out in a crowded market. Selling a property can be a stressful undertaking in a competitive real estate market like the Byron Bay shire. The aim is to take some of the stress out of the selling process, by transforming the property to attract more interest from local and interstate buyers. The Cactus Hill Project team works with owners to style the property, incorporating existing pieces and injecting additional furniture and homewares to ensure the property looks its best for the sale campaign. They present interior spaces through the lens of the Cactus Hill Project aesthetic, ensuring that potential buyers experience the unique character and sense of value of the property. A client noted "Cactus Hill Project turned our house into a warm, unique, character filled home. We didn’t want to leave. Another commented “Every room was beautifully thought out and the attention to detail was superb. We sold our house for well above the reserve and we attribute that to our investment with the Cactus Hill Project"

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE Don’t wait to sell your property before transforming it into a beautiful space. Cactus Hill Project’s home styling makeover will blend existing furnishings with new and exciting feature pieces to turn your house into a home. Develop a light and airy space, create comfortable places for relaxation, update your style or simply change the mood; their team will assist you to achieve the look you love within your budget. The process begins with an interior stylist visiting your home to discuss ideas and goals. With colour palettes and mood boards, they will then present ways of bringing colour, pattern and personality into your feature spaces. You may be surprised at how a few small changes can make a big difference to how you live. Visit Cactus Hill Project in store at 82 Burringbar St, Mullumbimby; or call the team on (02) 6684 6110 to arrange an in-home interior consultation.

PREPARING YOUR HOUSE FOR SALE

By Marisol Moylan from North Estate Agents With Spring fast approaching people traditionally start thinking about real estate again. It won’t be long before potential buyers come out of ‘winter hibernation mode’ and start driving around looking for a property to buy. If you are wanting to sell your home there are some important things to consider when preparing your house for a showing, inspection or even an open home. 1. How do your gardens look? First impressions are everything so concentrate on the front garden to enhance the street appeal of the property. Plant mature plants/flowers, mow the lawn and trim trees, bushes and lawn edges. 2. Fix the squeaky door and freshen up! Now is the time to have all those repairs and maintenance items attended to. From the squeaky gate to the loose tiles and dripping taps, get them fixed! Sometimes a coat of paint can add tremendous value to your property. You do not have to paint the whole house but look for the tired and dated areas. 3. De-clutter Chaos and clutter can deter potential buyers. People need to see your house at its best so that means tidying away the personal items (excessive family photos), memorabilia knick knacks, and removing unused items from bathrooms, garages and study. 4. Make sure you know all the answers Have answers prepared to frequently asked questions. These questions range from “Which high school is the property zoned for?” to “Are you flexible with the length of settlement period?” and “Can we have access to the property before settlement?” 5. Know its worth! Before you put your property on the market, you need to have an idea of the value of your property. The best way to do this is to find out what other comparable properties have sold for and ask a reputable agent. A common mistake vendors make is that they over price their property, ask an unrealistic high selling price and then wonder why is taking so long to sell. 6. Find an expert you trust Selling your home can seem a daunting process so it is important to find a real estate professional with experience and advice you can trust. They will guide you through each step and identify the best direction to take.

Take a walk on the soft side Tips and tricks for carpet and rugs THERE’S SOMETHING COMFORTING ABOUT GOOD CARPET. The warmth under our toes, the plush thickness adding bounce to our step and the way it envelops us when we roll around with our…pets. From room to room, it soothes underfoot and appeals to our senses for touch and texture. Buying the wrong carpet can be an expensive mistake, so roll up and read on as we lay on piles of useful information. Use this handy guide when choosing carpet and rugs for your home to warm your floor and enrich your lifestyle. VISUAL ILLUSION – HOW TO MAKE A ROOM LOOK BIGGER. Using a subtle colour consistently throughout a small house can make it look and feel bigger. WARMTH AND INSULATION. Carpet will add warmth to a room due to its insulation properties. This makes it an ideal choice in the bedrooms, but also in entertainment spaces as the insulation assists with sound control. ADD INTEREST WITH A RUG. If you opt for one carpet colour throughout your home (which is often cheaper than choosing multiple colours) you can add a splash of colour and personality with a feature rug. A rug is a great way of defining a space and adding texture. They also add depth and dimension by adding layers underfoot.

EXTRA PLUSH UNDERFOOT While rugs are great for design, they also add an extra layer. Consider adding a rug under the bed, while most of it will be invisible, it will still contribute to the warmth of the room and give your feet an extra-squishy layer to curl your toes into when you wake in the morning. KNOW YOUR FIBER Ask your local carpet expert for advice on what you want to achieve from your flooring. Durability? Warmth? Softness? Each fiber offers its own unique advantages. Polyester may be a cost-effective solution but is generally least resilient. Nylon has a reputation for durability and polypropylene is good for stain resistance. Wool, while it is usually the most expensive option, generally trumps other options for strength and warmth, think of it like your favourite wooly winter jumper. Blends of wool and nylon can give you the benefits of both, at a lower cost than pure wool carpet. Before you hit the shops, have an idea of the colour and the type of carpet you want, but remember, it's not just about aesthetics. It's recommended you get professional carpet cleaning at least once a year to keep your shag looking great for years to come.

BUYING OR SELLING? CONSULT THE EXPERTS

Buying or selling property in New South Wales can cause a lot of stress in your life if you feel out of your depth. Here are a few tips to remember when buying property to make the process a little less stressful, thanks to the experts at Jensens Solicitors. 1. Find someone who you feel comfortable with to represent you and support you during the process. Most people know very soon after speaking to someone whether they have a rapport with them. 2. If you don’t understand something – ask. The legal world is littered with jargon that is not very easy to decipher. You should never be worried about understanding a process that is about to tie up heaps of your money. 3. Be clear if you are purchasing a property with someone else what the difference is between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common. 4. Paying the deposit does not mean that you are locked in; when you pay your deposit to the agent, it is fully refundable if you chose not to proceed with the purchase until contracts are exchanged. Exchange is a literal swapping of contracts signed by each party. They are then dated and that is when they become binding. 5. Do not agree to exchange of contracts until your loan is unconditionally approved and you have satisfied yourself in relation to the condition of the property. We recommend that you obtain a pest and building report so that you are completely aware of any potential issues. It is better to be out $500 than find out after you move in that there are significant issues. This report also allows you to negotiate any works that should be completed.

Buying in Byron Who wants to live in a nice house on a hill in the Byron Bay hinterland? Seems like a lot of people do. What could be better: great climate, beautiful nature, strong community, and healthy lifestyle. What’s not to like? Due to the simple law of supply and demand, the median house price in postcode 2481 is now higher than Sydney. It is around $1.5 million, while Sydney is $1.16 million, even after a recent drop 1.9%. In the last five years, property prices in Byron Bay have risen by 135%. As a property buyer’s agent in the Byron Bay area for nearly 20 years, I have helped all kinds of people buy all kinds of property. The million-dollar question is how to keep what we love about Byron and save it from a popularity problem, i.e. everyone wants to live here! I have seen it go through many changes over the years, and fortunately it remains an amazing place. New people settling here want to maintain the Byron vibe and, if anything, make it even more special. But an unfortunate bye product of being green and under developed, which we all want, is high property prices and excessive rents.

We are not without other problems and issues. You only have to attend one of our lively council meetings to understand its not always a picnic at the beach. Buying in Byron is also not easy. Beside the extreme prices, it is highly contested and challenging. There are interesting and unique planning and zoning regulations. To make the right decision you need a lot of local knowledge. The other million-dollar question is, will it last? Are we in a property bubble and will prices come off – as they are presently doing in Sydney? As we move into this winter, there is a natural cooling-off after such a strong period of demand and growth. I am an optimist and believe this special part of the world will continue to be special well into the future. To me, there will never be a bad time to buy in and live in our region. If you are thinking of making the move, feel free to call me and I will tell you many more reasons why I think it’s a good idea.

FIND YOUR

You know that feeling you get after a great night’s sleep? One which leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to tackle a new day? Not only is sleep imperative to banishing those dark under-eye circles and boosting our mood, it also has far-reaching benefits concerning our mental health and physical wellbeing. Yet, many of us continue to take sleep for granted. With our lives getting busier, improving the quality of our sleep is now more important than ever. We wish for more hours in the day, but what we really need are more hours in the night, asleep.

It’s time, Byron Bay, to wake up and sleep. Let science, and the insights of over 16 million global bedMATCH profiles, find the right bed for you. Forty Winks Ballina is serious about sleep and helping you to get more of it. The team is excited to introduce cuttingedge sleep technology to help you find the right mattress to custom-fit your body. We are all unique, and just as we all have different fingerprints, we all have different bodies that react to different surfaces. Our body types, sleep needs and sleep patterns are all unique. Shouldn’t our bed be unique to match? To properly support our bodies, we require different support strengths and comfort layers to provide optimal sleep. Figuring this out can be difficult and the simple bounce test on a bed doesn’t always offer the best bed for our body. Why the traditional ‘lay-down’ test on a bed may not be right for your body. Most people choose their mattress based on how they feel after a few minutes trying it out in a store. The fundamental problem with this is that when you're awake, your muscles aren't fully relaxed. And when you sleep, the muscles in your body relax completely, making proper support even more important for spinal alignment and pressure relief.

you provide about your sleep preferences, bedMATCH® identifies the optimal postural support for your body. When your mattress provides optimal postural support based on your body type and sleeping position, your body stays properly aligned and supported during sleep. How much sleep do I really need? A Stanford University study found that college football players who attempted to sleep at least 10 hours per night, for seven to eight weeks, improved their average sprint time and had less fatigue and more stamina. Perhaps it’s time to adjust your thinking. Instead of viewing sleep as being lazy or a waste of time, make time to sleep more, for quality moments where you perform at your peak. Sleep can also reduce levels of stress, and with that people can have better control of their blood pressure. How much time will bedMATCH® take? bedMATCH makes finding your new bed easy. Exclusive to Forty Winks, it’s as easy as lying on a mattress for less than three minutes.

The best type of mattress for you should conform to and support your body. So instead of waking up sore and tired, you wake up feeling refreshed and healthy.

Even without fully grasping what sleep does for us, we know that going without sleep for too long makes us feel terrible, and that getting a good night's sleep can make us feel ready to take on the world. We get used to sleeping on a poor mattress, so we are unaware of the damage or longer-term issues it can be doing to our body.

Luckily, clever sleep scientists have changed the way we select a bed. bedMATCH® is a patented diagnostic system that matches you with the mattress best suited for your body type and sleeping position. Using more than 1,000 scientific calculations, 18 statistical measurements and the information

Put your health first and head into Forty Winks Ballina to get a bedMATCH profile and discover if you’re being supported correctly in bed. Their experts are serious about sleep, working hard for more than 30 years so you can rest easy on the perfect bed matched to you. Sleep well, live well.

Top 5 natives which can thrive inside

Plants make people happy! They improve oxygen levels and improve the air quality of our homes, which is why the popularity of bringing plants indoors is again on the rise. When pondering which plants to adorn our interiors, we often don’t consider Australian natives, however they do have great potential as indoor thrivers. Consider rainforest plants. They begin their life in low light, biding their time until the canopy opens and allows them to grow. The under-storey plants, such as ferns, palms, cordylines and orchids, live most of their lives without sun. By bringing natives into your home you will be at the cutting-edge of interior plantscaping. HERE ARE OUR TOP FIVE CHOICES TO BRING AUSTRALIAN NATIVES INTO YOUR HOME 1. KENTIA PALMS: endemic to Lord Howe Island. They’ve been a popular house plant in Europe and the United States since the 1870s. Their graceful, arching fronds have featured in the palm courts of fancy hotels such as The Ritz in London. Bangalow palms, Alexander palms, and Walking Stick palms are also good choices. 2. YOUNG RAINFOREST TREES: especially Bunya Pines, (Araucaria bidwillii), Brown Pine (Prumnopitys ladei), and Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina). Rainforest trees start their lives in the shade on the forest floor, so these could be suitable for growing indoors. The trick is to have a few that you rotate every 6-8 weeks, giving them a rest outside in the shade. 3. NATIVE CORDYLINES ESPECIALLY CORDYLINE PETEOLARIS: C. stricta and C. rubra. These have lovely strappy green leaves on woody stems, with sprays of pretty flowers in spring and early summer, followed by small flowers. 4: NATIVE MAIDEN HAIR FERN: (Adiantum hispidulum) is harder to get hold of than the exotic varieties, but probably the better one for indoors as it is a bit tougher. 5. KANGAROO VINE: (Cissus Antarctica) looks almost identical to the more commonly found exotic Cissus ellen danica, which is perfect for hanging pots and draping over shelves.

TOP TIPS FOR GROWING PLANTS INSIDE • Remember there is no such thing as an indoor plant. The best plants for growing inside are the ones that will grow happily in a shady environment. • Try to replicate the natural growing conditions. For example, ferns like a humid spot, so they will prefer a bathroom over a breezy verandah. • Avoid sudden changes in light levels – figs especially will just drop all their leaves overnight if you change the conditions too much. • Afternoon sun streaming through a window can burn leaves so do be careful to avoid that. • Dust will settle on leaves, so wipe them over with a damp cloth every now and then or put them in the shower or the rain. • Overwatering is the most common cause of death. Some plants need more water than others. • Fertilise the plants a couple of times a year with a slow release fertiliser, but back off if you don’t want the plant to grow too much bigger. You may need to re-pot every 1-2 years. • Watch out for pests, especially mealy bug, and treat it before it becomes too severe. Trim off old or damaged leaves as needed. • If you have indoor pets, especially cats, make sure they don’t scratch around in the pots or use them instead of kitty litter. Too much urine is not good! omething big has been brewing in Byron’s favourite hand-blended organic tea business, Clean Tea. It’s not a storm in a teacup; rather this local tea company plans to take the world by storm with its global launch into the UK market this September. It is a period of accelerated expansion for the brand which started as a little market stall, right here in Byron Bay. The family-owned and operated business has garnished a reputation for quality, with its popular blends lovingly handcrafted from organic, natural herbs and fruits. After soaring in popularity on social media, Clean Tea moved to a retail and manufacturing facility in the Arts and Industrial Estate to keep up with demand from tea lovers across Australia and New Zealand.

46 www.byronlifemag.com

Owner and founder, Jordana Edwards, is excited to share her range of health-boosting teas with the world. “Handcrafting and creating more than 50 blends has brought me the greatest joy, there is a lot of love and time that goes into creating our product and now I get the opportunity to share that joy with the world. I love tea and I love what I do, I am grateful every day to be able to share my passion with so many people who are passionate about improving their health and wellness. Our latest range of chocolate teas have been so successful, even appealing to those who wouldn’t normally drink tea and that’s what it’s about, creating delicious cups of happiness for people to enjoy,” she said.

This little, local brand which started as a motherand-daughter venture is now gearing up to share its little cups of clean tea with the world. But despite the fact that it is about to go global, the manufacturing process hasn’t changed. Each cup of tea is still hand-blended here in Byron Bay with beneficial combinations of ingredients aimed at boosting health and wellbeing. There’s something special about a handblended, boutique tea. There’s love that goes into every cup. It’s a little cup of Byron; no wonder the rest of the world can’t wait to wrap their hands around it.

Ageing gracefully; it’s easier said than done. Fine lines around the forehead, bags beneath the eyes and deep creases near the mouth can sneak up on us unexpectedly; making us look much older than we feel. Before you consider plastic surgery; injectables can be a non-surgical option to help reduce those signs of ageing. They are extremely effective at smoothing away age lines, removing wrinkles, restoring facial volume, and even reducing chin fat to take care of a double chin. If you’re ready for a change, visit Dr. Alex Chen at Central Pottsville Medical Centre.

We tend to avoid the dentist for all sorts of reasons, with cost being one of the big ones. You sometimes cannot tell whether what was just done in your mouth was a simple little thing or a very expensive thing. The hit to the wallet can be more painful than the actual procedure! That's why at Bytes of Byron Dental we take the time to listen to what each patient wants and can afford. We aim to work within individual budgets so that every-one can have a healthy mouth, without breaking the bank. Sometimes a lot of dental work is needed. The conscientious shopper can approach the long list of treatments needed in 2 ways. 1. Use the MAC credit payment plan, which allows credit starting from $5000. Have all the treatment you need and pay off the plan over time. 2. Simply chip away at the dental work, having a small amount done at each visit. The visits can be spaced months apart if needed. Bytes of Byron Dental is not a corporate group listed on the stock exchange. We are not here to boost share holder profits. We are simply here to provide honest, quality dentistry to every-one, at an affordable price. We hope this inspires people to take care of their dental health before it's too late.

Dr. Alex has been with Central Pottsville Medical Centre for the past 18 months. After completing his Bachelor of Medical Science at Tasmania University 2006 as well has his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Tasmania University in 2011; Dr. Alex has experience in laser beauty, surgical training and cosmetic procedures. His expertise led to Central Pottsville Medical Centre expanding its clinic to create new rooms specifically for injectable treatments. HOW DO INJECTABLES WORK? To treat lines and wrinkles, Dysport or Botox is injected into wrinkles and frown lines, helping to relax the muscles so that the skin looks smoother and less wrinkled. Fillers for cheeks and lips are injected into the specific area and “fills out” the target destination to help harmonise your features by enhancing definition or correcting shape. Injectables aren’t a long-term solution. If you discontinue use of the injectables muscle activity will gradually return and wrinkles will slowly reappear, however they are unlikely to be worse than the pre-treatment state. The results for injectables can last up to five months. Results can be seen as early as 2-3 days. Fillers for cheeks and lips, results are immediate and can last up to six months. It is important to note that results will vary from person to person. ARE INJECTABLES RIGHT FOR ME? As individuals, we all have different reasons for wanting to improve the way we look and feel about ourselves. Injectable treatments can be used by most people. Treatments often appeal to those who would like to smooth frown lines without looking frozen or overdone, to enhance facial features and correct asymmetry, define cheekbones or enhance lips. A thorough consultation with Dr. Alex will determine if injectables will be an effective solution for you. Whether you would like to soften lines and wrinkles, achieve smoother skin, restore volume or enhance your lips; together with Dr. Alex you can tailor an outcome that suits you. Injectables are a safer and more cost-effective treatment compared to surgery. You can repeat treatments as per your requirements. To schedule a consultation at the clinic, contact Central Pottsville Medical Centre on 02 6676 0055. Dr. Alex Chen will be happy to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

“I didn’t want to be the fat guy

who looks good in a suit” “Around March 2016 I stepped on the scales and 130kg popped up on the little screen. I was getting married in June 2017, and at the time I found myself sitting at home Googling ‘suit styles that look good on fat men,’ when I realised that I didn’t want to be a fat guy that looks good in a suit, I just want to look and feel comfortable no matter what I’m wearing or doing. That was a life changing moment for me.”

“My personal trainer, Dylan, said to me ‘just give me one year, that’s all I need from you and I’ll give you back your life.’ He changed my entire life in that one year. It was a very strict and regimented eating plan alongside intense physical training, but I was down to 100kg within four months. At my lowest I reached 94kg, but I’m at 100kg now as I focus on building lean muscle,” Dane said. Dylan then invited Dane to Byron Bay Crossfit for a training session. After stepping foot in this new style of gym, Dane hasn’t looked back. “I came to that class and I never even thought about going back to the other gym. The atmosphere in there was so different to any other gym I had ever been to. It was unreal. At the time I had already lost the weight I wanted to, so my goals were to get fitter and stronger. My strength and fitness right now are the best they have been in the entire 30 years I’ve been alive, and it’s only going to keep getting better!

At his heaviest in 2014, Dane Evans weighed 143kg. He was constantly tired, continually falling ill, had aches and pains and was generally unhappy within himself. “The self-esteem and insecurity that goes with being morbidly obese is a pretty hard pill to wake up every day and swallow, but you get so used to wallowing in your own misery that you eventually just succumb to it and let yourself go. To be brutally honest, looking back and reflecting on the person I was, I am extremely disappointed in what I did to my physical and mental health out of sheer laziness,” he said. Determined to shed the excess weight before his upcoming wedding to the love of his life, Sophie, Dane reached out to a friend in the fitness industry.

50 www.byronlifemag.com

“The people there, members and staff, have become like a second family to me. If I’m having a hard day, someone is willing to lend an ear or give some advice. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of my first coach, Dyl, and my current friend and coach, Nick, for constantly pushing me to reach the goals I set for myself. Not only have I grown as an athlete, but as a person, because of all the help and advice they have both given me,” Dane said. His determination to get fit for his family means that Dane now looks forward to outings on the beach with his children, Layla and Lincoln. “As a really big guy, I was never comfortable with taking my shirt off in public. I was the guy at the beach in the water in a basketball jersey. I was very selfconscious. Now I have absolutely no problem taking my shirt off anywhere. At the beach, at the gym, wherever, whenever! I guess you could say one of the greatest things I achieved was self-confidence.” Say Hi to Dane when you’re visiting Byron’s favourite hangover cure hangout, Beloporto Burger Bar and give him some encouragement as he continues his health and fitness journey.

here’s something about the rhythm of the feet, the looking ahead, the challenge of mind over body and the sense of selfaccomplishment at the completion of every run. It’s a well-documented fact that running is great for mental health, but as with all challenges, taking the first step is the hardest.

“Whilst I can’t comment on more serious mental health issues, we definitely promote the mental well-being of our members through encouraging friendships and social support between club members. It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are, we’ve always got someone who will run with you!”

You don’t have to be able to run a marathon, or even five kilometres for that matter, to join a running club. Byron Bay Runners is a not-forprofit welcoming community running club that loves nothing more than seeing people of all fitness levels strive to better their running ability.

Caroline shares how running can also become a catalyst for people to challenge themselves beyond what they may have thought possible.

Officially registered in 2012, the club has grown in popularity from 40 members to more than 130, with runners ranging in ability from those striving to complete their first 5km to elite-level state and national representatives. The club was formed purely from a love of running, to promote running as an affordable and inclusive community activity to take advantage of the beautiful Byron scenery. The club is run entirely on the goodwill of volunteers with coaches assisting runners of all abilities to reach their goals. President and Co-founder, Caroline Bailey, is also a psychologist who shares how running has helped many of the club’s members face daily challenges in life. “I think many of us use running as a positive coping mechanism for life’s stresses and strains; with a minimal level of fitness, easy paced running becomes very meditative. I think it’s impossible to go for a run along a sunlit beach or shady lush trail and come back in a bad mood! 52 www.byronlifemag.com

“I have also seen many times how people have started running, with a particular goal in mind, such as finishing their first 5km or first 10km. When they achieve this, it’s a huge boost to their confidence. This confidence then grows in other areas of their life, like a massive running snowball of positivity,” she said. The club has eight Athletics Australia accredited coaches, who can offer guidance and individualised training programs (as part of the annual membership fee) in recreational running; including trail events, and highperformance coaching in track disciplines of middle-long distance, and sprints, hurdles and relays. The club’s school-aged squads have achieved outstanding results, producing state and national medalists as well as the Under 18 national champion for the 3,000 metres. The club also trains for events such as the Gold Coast Marathon Festival and has a number of successful masters athletes who compete in national road events such as the Sydney Running Festival, or ultramarathon trail events which cover distances up to 160km. The club also has a range of social runs

every week, with its Sunday social run hitting international recognition for its ‘plogging’ initiative. Coordinator of this Sunday run, Geoff Bensley almost broke the internet when he introduced the idea of plogging as a formal activity to this run once per month. Plogging is the action of picking up litter whilst jogging, combining an activity which is good for body and mind with one which is great for our environment. After posting the success of the initiative on Facebook, the post was shared with Plogging Australia and shared multiple times across Facebook until it was picked up by the ABC whose video went viral worldwide. Having grown up in the region and being a passionate advocate for the environment, Geoff was thrilled that their activity reached so many people and encouraged more people across the world to include picking up rubbish to their daily jog. While some weird and wonderful items have been found on the plogging missions, one of the high-school age runners was fortunate to discover a sea-salt encrusted $20 note, proving that if you’re kind to Mother Nature she will reward you in unexpected ways. For adults, club membership starts at $25 for the year (for weekly social run groups), up to full membership at $100 per year, which also includes individualised coaching plans, coached track training sessions, affiliation with Athletics NSW, personal liability insurance and a 2XU club singlet. 5 Mental Health Benefits of Running

Not only does it strengthen the cardiovascular system, running is a great reliever of stress. It does far more for the mind than we give it credit for, so put down the Prozac and lace up those joggers.

1. Socialising It’s amazing the bonds that can form while pounding the pavement. As you leave the stress of life behind, the words flow with your running companions about whatever is on your mind. Work, relationships, troubles, good times, life. It’s an under-rated form of therapy. Running buddies can become great friends, push you to achieve more and be there for you when you need an extra dose of motivation.

2. Switch from feeling stressed to sublime In simple terms, when we are stressed, our bodies produce a hormone called cortisol, which can be harmful to the body. Counter-act the stress hormones with happy hormones, such as endorphins, which are generated by the body when we exercise. Endorphins are a natural anti-depressant and can boost mental health.

3. Boost that self-esteem Regardless of our weight, size, gender or age; exercise is a quick way to elevate our perception of attractiveness. When you start to feel better, you perceive yourself in a more positive light, which increases self-confidence and feelings of self-worth. Of course, over time, those efforts will result in physical improvements which will perpetuate those feelings of looking good.

4. Sleep like a champ There’s sleep, and then there’s a good night’s sleep. One which you awaken actually feeling refreshed. Running can help achieve that. There is a difference between falling into bed exhausted from a stressful day, compared to being physically exhausted yet feeling good from exercise. Stress exhaustion can cause insomnia and restless periods of sleep, whereas running to clear your mind and physically benefit your body is more likely to elevate the quality of your sleep.

5. Get more done One of the greatest excuses we have for not exercising is that we’re too busy, however by adding a daily run into your schedule, you’re actually more likely to achieve more. Research suggests that midday can be a good time to squeeze in a quick jog if you’re pressed for time due to the body’s circadian rhythms. www.byronlifemag.com 53

oundhouse Cutbacks and Backhand Snaps, at nine-years old, there’s nothing more than our grom, Mac Brindley, loves than catching a barrel and landing some sweet turns. A born froth-head, he was introduced to surfing at four years old by his dad, Mark, while the family was travelling around Australia. Since then he’s run with it and is now a promising future star with the Byron Bay Boardriders. He is currently sitting in first position in the club’s Under 12 division and placed second in a Willsy X Grom event earlier this year. A natural on his feet, Mac also loves skating and snowboarding after a family holiday in the mountains of Japan. He goes to school at Byron Bay Public School and enjoys his sport above all else. When it comes to the froth; Mac enjoys watching the big boys rip up the waves in the World Surf League. He loves Mick Fanning, John Florence, Ozzie Wright and of course Danny Wills but he also looks up to some local boys; Touma Cameron and Duke Wrencher; who set an example on how to charge waves, be respectful and most of all, have lots of fun.

WHAT DO YOU GET UP TO WHEN YOU’RE NOT IN THE FROTH? “I like skating around, playing AFL and I play bass guitar.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? “Anything Asian is yummy.” WHAT BOARD DO YOU RIDE? “A JS Surfboards, Custom Monsta 8.” WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO SURF? “Broken Head and The Wreck.”

THE WORLD’S MOST CHALLENGING PADDLE RACE “In many ways, my motivation comes from wanting to demonstrate that women and mothers can have dreams and goals for themselves. By achieving their dreams, it adds strength to their families and the community, rather than taking away from it. Too often, as mothers, we take on the belief that by doing what we love it will detract from our children, but that’s just not the case.”

A

multiple masters national champion and masters world champion, Heli Murray’s progression through the disciplines of lifesaving demonstrate that it’s never too late to chase great. She moved to the Byron Shire 16 years ago and began ocean swimming a couple of years after her move. “My sons started nippers around 2006 and I became involved in the Byron Bay Surf Club doing water safety and helping where I could. When my eldest son, Taz, started on long boards, I began board paddling. “Initially I thought, ‘Oh, I’m too old for this,’ as I was pretty uncoordinated getting in and out of the surf, but once I was in, I flew along, so I kept at it and gradually improved with the patient help of many of our wonderful local coaches; Gary Timperley, Glen Lawrence and Paul Irwin,” Heli said. In her first year of paddling, Heli entered the Australian Titles in Kurrawa and won her female masters age group. Even now, Heli still struggles with her starts on the sand, so she has naturally progressed toward endurance events with longer distances out on the water. She has competed multiple times in the Coolangatta Gold which includes paddle, run and swim components and won a world title in 2012 at the Ironwoman in her masters age group. With nothing left to prove, Heli has been meticulously training to take on an event known as the world’s most challenging paddle race, the Molokai to Oahu World Championships in Hawaii. “I’ve known about the Molokai to Ohau for a few years, but I’d believed I was ‘too old’ or ‘too something.’ Then I realised those weren’t my beliefs, but other people’s and I no longer had to take those on. The allure of all that water just got to me and I decided to go for it. I have nothing to prove, I’m doing it because I want to experience it and because I love the water, so why not!”

Training for this event has been a serious commitment for Heli. She spends most of her time in the water between Broken Head, Cape Byron and Julian Rocks doing interval sessions, and for longer paddles she travels between Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads and Pottsville. “I’ve met some fantastic people and community support as well as support from the life saving club has been amazing. From swimmers and paddling gear from Azureocean and Kozii Swimwear to smiles and waves from people on the water, pick-ups and drop-offs from family and friends. Before I’ve even competed it’s already been an amazing experience. Now I just need to complete the crossing, at least it’s long enough to make up for a bad start,” she laughs.

A MASTER OF HIS CRAFT The sport of surf life saving is unlike any other. Its primary focus is to train every day people to leap into action in a life or death situation, battling powerful elements of nature to save a life. It’s no wonder that the resulting competition at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships is fierce to say the least.

T

he 2018 championships were held in Scarborough, Western Australia, where 311 surf clubs from across Australia come together to compete in more than 400 beach and ocean events. It’s the largest event of its kind, and local life saver, Colin Mustoe, brought Byron Bay back four championship titles in his most successful Australian Championship campaign yet.

Ironman, surf board paddle, surf board rescue and surf board relay.

Colin started Nippers as a 10-year-old. As a competitive swimmer who also loved surfing, he had the ideal fundamentals to learn the skills required to handle the different types of surfcraft.

Although surf lifesaving is strongest here in Australia, Colin has competed all over the world as a masters athlete, in surf life saving world championships and open water swim events.

As a senior, he won several state titles and made finals in the Australian open grade, but it has been his transition into masters which has brought him the most success. His gold medal tally to date in the Australian Championships as a masters athlete now totals 22, adding to the impressive 12 masters world titles he has to his name.

“I have competed in open water swims in various places around the world including Hawaii, Spain and Turkey. The swim from Europe to Asia across the Dardanelles in Turkey was an amazing experience.

“It was a real thrill to do so well after many months of hard training,” he said, after clinching wins in the

56 www.byronlifemag.com

While his board and swimming legs are the strongest due to his background in surfing and swimming, he says you can’t afford to have a weak leg in the Ironman, commenting “My surf ski leg has improved this season due to the extra training.”

“We have had some fantastic trips away to surf lifesaving world championships in France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and New Zealand. Whilst competing in the Baltic Sea we were regularly contending with large waves coming

off Scandinavian car ferries. That was a first! Transporting our surf skis and paddle boards around the world can be challenging and expensive,” he said. Colin believes that surf lifesaving is a great movement to be a part of, both the competitive side but also the friendships formed and the dedication to saving lives in the community. “The primary function is to keep our beaches safe and there are so many paths you can go down within the association. The camaraderie is pretty special, to win something with your team mates is hard to beat. Here in the bay, the Byron Bay Surf Club has a strong reputation among the life saving fraternity. For a country club it punches above its weight and has produced many great champions over the years. We’re fortunate to have such wonderful surf training conditions.” Colin has his eye on the world championships later this year, being held in South Australia, hoping to add to his already impressive 12 world championship titles.

It’s a beautiful thing, when a passion becomes a profession. That has been the case for Ben Rayner, a frother who fell in love with Marianne, a girl from Quebec, while visiting Portugal. She became his muse and together they later moved to Byron Bay. Ben grew up in a coastal suburb in Adelaide, but would have to travel an hour to hit the waves. He finished a carpentry apprenticeship at 21 and travelled the world for 16 months, before settling in Byron at the beginning of this year. He works an organic farm in Mullumbimby which resonates with his healthy lifestyle. “It’s so inspiring working with people that want to make positive change, it is what inspires me in all aspects of life. I’m really into healthy living, the arts and human rights, I’m inspired by the indigenous people of our Earth and all culture that has true wisdom and connection to life.” He got into photography as a teenager, taking photos and making Youtube videos of his mates body-boarding, skating and generally getting up to mischief. Reading surfing magazines along with a love of the ocean ignited this passion, which he has now transformed into a business. “I’ve worked alongside my partner, Marianne, you can find her on Insta @ mroussety as well as eco-conscious brands to create content for Instagram and websites. My brand is From Our Earth photos and I’ve recently teamed up with friends at The Green Room which specialise in animation and website design,” he said.

WHAT DRAWS YOU TO THE FROTH? “Energy, connection to nature and beauty draws me to the ocean. I could use so many words to explain my love for waves. The freedom and joy that wave-riding brings to people is like nothing else, it’s so special and has such a deep connection for me. The energy the ocean passes on to us is powerful and it’s important as surfers to remember to be thankful, give respect and take care of our ocean as it has given all of us so much in life.” WHERE ARE YOUR HOT SPOTS TO SURF, SHOOT AND CHILL? “I love surfing and shooting Broken Head around Byron Bay, It’s such a fun spot because there’s three different types of waves. I have travelled quite a bit in my 25 years of existence and have been to so many beautiful surf locations, Byron Bay is one of those places. The beach and anywhere in nature is always a special place for my meditation, it’s where I connect most and has given us everything we have, so it always feels right to meditate outside.” WHERE’S THE MOST EPIC PLACE YOU’VE SURFED? “That’s a hard one! I’ve Been to America, Central and South America, Indo, Portugal and a couple of Pacific islands. Some of the spots I've surfed in South Australia are so incredibly scenic and raw. Nicaragua was a pretty special place for me and I had some amazing waves there as the wind blows off-shore 300 days of the year in a section along the coast.”

“Peace Love and all of the above.”

We all love a good yarn, and only if the walls of the Byron Bay Brewery could talk. Starting its life as a piggery, this epic venue has hosted some of the best musicians on Earth; from The Violent Femmes to Crowded House. It was this rich aura of history that inspired Nick Sergi to start one of Byron’s newest music gatherings, the Byron Bay Guitar Festival. “I was at the Brewery working on their in-house PA, at the time they had just reopened under new management and the back room was closed. I was looking at all the great artists on the wall and the history that had happened in that room - I was amazed to say the least! I thought how cool it would be to bring back some of the guitar legends that had once played the room. I rang Phil Emmanuel then I rang Kevin Borich - next thing you know I had started the first guitar festival,” he said. The Byron Bay Guitar Festival returns this October for its second year, with an impressive eclectic lineup of local,

Aussie and international talent. After a successful debut year in 2017, despite torrential rain, the inaugural festival was heralded a success for bringing a local community event accessible to all back to the Byron fold. The familyfriendly festival is open to all, with children welcome. In fact, one of the star performers will be a 9-year-old child prodigy, Taj Farrant, from the Central Coast. This incredible lad was rocking out epic hits, such as Purple Rain and You Shook me all Night Long within a year of picking up the guitar. Bring your kids along to witness this youngster who has a massive future in the music industry. Produced by Byron Music, the event features 29 + live performances on two stages. The festival has a strong emphasis on guitar, an instrument Nick has always been drawn to. “My Dad plays, that is where my roots have stemmed from. He played in bands and I would basically shadow

him in his studio, to setup and to gigs. He always joked I was doing my apprenticeship. He likes good guitar music too and would always show me who he was listening to, from that I learned my heroes. As I grew up I got more involved with playing, fixing and selling guitars. Over the years I’ve assumed a passion for the diversity of the instrument, its capabilities and the performers,” he says. “There is a certain sonic beauty of the guitar in music that you just don’t get from other instruments.” With an overall celebration of music, there are many lead-up events to check out. Saturday at Byron Music, 144 Jonson St, there will be a huge pre-fest sale at the store with performances by local students, from 9.30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday the Guitar Fest markets will be held inside the venue, featuring heaps of guitars on display and big specials available on the day presented

by Byron Music. There will also be masterclasses held in the Pighouse Flicks on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Presented by Jeff Martin (The Tea Party) and Lloyd Spiegel, there will also be sessions with event sponsors Fender and Yamaha. Headlining is Aussie chart-topping alt-rockers British India who are celebrating their tenth year and sixth album ‘Forgetting the Future’; the prolific and powerful force that is Ash Grunwald, bringing his reputation as a live act not to be missed; the beautiful and powerful Hussy Hicks; and Dallas Frasca’s hot thumping live show. “This is guitar lovers’ heaven, but it appeals to lovers of all music. In a world where more and more is moving into the digital realm, we want to bring it back and celebrate live music, the craftsmanship of beautiful instruments, and the community that forms around music when you’re physically standing in a room enjoying it together.”

VENUE SPOTLIGHT – BYRON BAY BREWERY Funky spaces, colour and character; beer and burgers plus epic music – no wonder the Byron Bay Guitar Festival and Byron Bay Brewery are a match made in foodie-music heaven. Byron Bay Brewery Marketing & Events Coordinator, Alain de Carne, shares the Brewery’s excitement at holding this festival for the second consecutive year. “We’re stoked to hold the BB Guitar Fest at the Brewery for so many reasons. The calibre of music that comes through over the two days is just incredible; the festival draws such a nice crowd of music lovers of all ages; we love to share our beers with good people, listening to good live music,” he commented.

WHAT MAKES THE BYRON BAY BREWERY AN EPIC VENUE FOR THIS FESTIVAL? “The Brewery is a great festival space as we have two permanent stages, both with totally different and unique vibes. The Beer Garden stage sits under a huge

200-year-old fig tree, and the big old band room has so much history; being the original home of the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, as well as hosting some of the country’s biggest touring acts: The Violent Femmes, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, The Ramones and many more.”

WHAT FOOD AND DRINK WILL BE AVAILABLE? “We’ll have our regular menu, as well as a special burger created specifically for the guitar lovers. Don’t worry, there won’t be any plectrums or guitar strings on the burger, it’ll just be named accordingly. Mouth-watering burgers made with fresh ingredients and beer freshly-brewed on-site; it’s a magic combination.” Byron Bay Guitar Festival is an all ages event, and supports the charity Be Happy Music Club. Festival Band Spotlight

Hussy Hicks It’s been a decade since Hussy Hicks graced the music scene with its daring debut album, but this duo has been tangoing with tunes for many years before that. The band originally started as three Northern-Rivers locals, with Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz joined by Leesa’s sister, Kristy; playing in a bar in the Middle East. To say these girls have had some adventures is an understatement. It was in the Middle East where Julz once unknowingly initiated a bar fight with Prince Bin Laden, yes Osama's cousin, in Dubai after an 'interpretative action dance' was terribly misconstrued. The original three got back together last year for the ABC for Kid’s TV series, ‘Get Grubby TV’ as Dirt Girls’ band. Hussy Hicks has made a name for itself locally and internationally; with the duo selling out gigs all over the world on epic road trips. But they garnished this popularity the old-fashioned way, by giving passionate performances and connecting with audiences one heartfelt performance at a time. Currently; the ladies are touring America and having a damn good time doing it. Their road trip has taken them from sweltering heat in Texas to the cooler climate of Colorado, where they have been seen taking their jar of Vegemite into classic roadhouse diners and paddling a kayak on the Colorado River. They will spend August tripping from Alaska to Los Angeles, down to North Carolina and Alabama, then back up to New York with many other stops in-between. We managed to catch up with them on the road to find out about their tour and when they will be back in Australia to play at the Byron Bay Guitar Festival. TELL US ABOUT YOUR USA TOUR; HOW’S IT GONE SO FAR? “We’ve been having a really magical tour through the States. While we’ve spent tonnes of time here over the years we haven’t really focused on building up a touring circuit because we usually head to Alabama and hang out there making music with our incredible crew of talented

people in the Mobile area. So this has been a huge adventure for us. We’re covering large amounts of the country; California, then the deep south; Louisiana, Alabama, Florida. At the moment we’re in Colorado after driving through Texas and our next stop is Alaska, so we’re having loads of new experiences and really enjoying it.” HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOU PLAY? “We take inspiration from blues, folk, surf and country music; throwing in smatterings of face-melting rock, gypsy jazz and 80’s power ballads. It’s kinda an ‘anything goes’ situation with us.” JULZ – WHAT ORIGINALLY DREW YOU TO THE GUITAR? “I started playing violin at three, but my dad and his friends would all sit round and play on guitars; classic Neil Young songs and the like; and I couldn’t see how violin fit in there. I switched to guitar at about seven and went pretty frantically about soaking in as much as I could.” LEESA, WHEN DID YOU START SINGING? “I started singing when I was 9 years old and, honestly, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I love to sing hard and always really try to put all of my passion and energy into live shows. I’m always trying to push my boundaries and challenge myself vocally and my hope is to keep growing and improving my technique, range and tone as time goes on.” WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT TO HEAR AT THE BYRON BAY GUITAR FESTIVAL? “Our guitar fest set will definitely feature Julz’s

playing; we have a bunch of songs that have some stand-out guitar solos and also plenty of space for improvisation, so we’ll make sure that they are on the setlist. We will be joined by bass player and fellow local, Tracy Stephens on bass and in band mode.” Notably; Julz was recently voted in the Top 10 for Guitar Heroes from the recent Bluesfest out of 70 candidates. When you’re up against a legend like Santana, it’s definitely a big deal. Julz came 5th, pipping Melissa Etheridge and B.B. King to name a couple. Catch local legends Hussy Hicks at the Byron Bay Guitar Festival, 6 and 7 October at Byron Bay Brewery. Tickets available via byronbayguitarfestival.com.au. www.byronlifemag.com 61

A QUIET REVOLUTION Andrea Kirwin “I haven't invested in any promotional packages to market my music to radio because I like connecting to people at shows. I enjoy having a more personal connection.” By Ian Browne www.shamrocknewsmusic.com

E

very time I catch up with talented singer Elena B Williams we land up talking about her friend Andrea Kirwin, this mystical Fijian-Australian who inhabits Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. An adopted daughter of Byron Shire now, I was hoping to meet this positive soul one day. I got to spend time with Andrea after her gig at the Mullumbimby Luau last November. A week later I saw her perform in the late afternoon parklands of Brisbane’s South Bank. I watched her appeal on the faces in the crowd, some new to the tranquil ambience flowing gently through the cooling leafy shadows. They were really charmed by Andrea, her cover of an Eric Clapton song, brilliant! She has some pulling power and is popular in the SE corner of Qld, and into northern NSW. With a polite and subtle grace, this woman will soon find herself in demand further afield. I have seen Andrea’s CDs on display over the years out at the indie gig paradise ‘Sphinx Rock Café’, located between Nimbin and Uki. Her newest creation, this wonderful 17 track masterpiece, is the third to come along and dazzle. Andrea explained how there are 12 songs on A QUIET REVOLUTION that are originals, written by Andrea. There are also five cover songs by Rodriguez, Lennon-McCartney, Sting, Tracy Chapman, and the gospel song Amazing Grace. Recorded by Govinda Doyle at Govinda’s Galaxial Paradise, I find this album relaxing, yet it speaks of colourful, positive times where the simple things are invited to enrich one’s life. This album has a vibrant, clean energy, and I very much doubt anyone would disagree with that, it will be a popular CD. A bluesy, folky string of tunes, I really enjoy the opening song which announces the CD’s title… “so let’s all drift away, out of this human race- whoo.” The cover, Sugar Man, is nicely guided by its melancholy drifting. Mystify appealing in its sunny Polynesian celebration. The cover Fields of Gold is a beautifully written piece where Andrea’s voice seduces tones to her demand with ease, the acoustic guitar gently inhabits the landscape which cradles the story. And finally, I really love the marriage of ukulele and acoustic guitar tinkering away within the nostalgic South Sea

62 www.byronlifemag.com

paradise My Island Dream. Yes, the Tracy Chapman single Fast Car is spot on, and Here Comes the Sun is a grand way to end such a beautiful set of tunes. But we really ought to see what the author of this magical album has to say:

A QUIET REVOLUTION – a chat with Andrea Kirwin When did you first sling a guitar over your shoulder and begin singing, and what song would that have been? At age 21 I discovered folk music at a Clare Bowditch concert at ANU Bar, Canberra. I'd never been to an acoustic music concert and was blown away by the simplicity, beauty and honesty in the performance. The next day I started song writing and playing guitar in earnest and began performing not long after that.

You described your enjoyment of a venue in Yandina on the Queensland Sunshine Coast. Why do you like playing there so much, and what is it about that part of the world that pleases you most? One of my great motivators behind playing music is connecting with people. I feel it creates a village atmosphere where everybody knows each other and comes together to celebrate life. The meeting places where these gatherings take place are very special and important to our society. One of my favourite meeting places is a venue called THE SHARED in Yandina. It is a family friendly music venue with a cafe and restaurant run by Caribbean native 'Boogie' who is an amazing chef. I often host my birthday party there and play every couple of months. Everyone who attends is like family now. I've been performing there for over 4 years and launched my latest album there.

N The title to your latest CD ‘A QUIET REVOLUTION’… can you let us in on what this is saying? Are you getting airplay? A Quiet Revolution is about the underground network of good hearted people who make up the fabric of our lives. Our immediate family, our circle of loved ones and those that bring kindness and joy to us on a daily basis. Sometimes we are led to believe the world is a terrible place, full of sadness, suffering and violence. But the truth is underneath the news stories and generated fear, humans care for their families, and protect what they love. So, the quiet revolution continues to be the foundation of our human existence, a foundation of love, peace and oneness. My music receives some airplay from community radio stations but mostly people buy the albums at shows and listen to them in their cars. The messages on the album are positive and it helps people through their day. I haven't invested in any promotional packages to market my music to radio because I like connecting to people at shows. I enjoy having a more personal connection.

Is there a song that people request most from this CD when you are playing live? The covers that are on the Album are one's that people often ask for. I hadn't recorded any covers before but after so many requests I thought it would be a great way to give people something that is familiar to them in order to encourage them to connect with the original music. The album has become my best-selling album out of the 3 because people love to hear the songs they love and feel connected to.

Choosing a song you cover, and one of your own songs, describe why they are so important to you. 'Amazing Grace' is a song that I have sung hundreds of times in my life. Growing up in the gospel tradition, I had an abundance of singing in my life. This has definitely shaped the person I am today. Nowadays I consider myself to be a spiritual person, but I still maintain the universal truths of unconditional love, hope and faith in humanity. 'Lewa Lai Lai' means 'Little Girl' in Fijian. It features some Fijian language with English translation. I am very proud of my Fijian heritage and enjoy singing and telling stories of my time living on the Island of Matuku for a year when I was 8 years old.

You are playing gigs around the SE Qld/NSW region of late. What is your plan of action, are you hoping to soothe the pants off audiences during any upcoming festivals? Hahaha - my solo music is definitely relaxing! But as a band it is definitely more upbeat and uplifting with a funk/soul/reggae/roots vibe. We've been supporting Brisbane band BULLHORN at a few shows in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. I'm playing lots of local shows on the Sunshine Coast and at the Miami Marketta with my band. I'll be returning to Byron Bay venues also. I did a few shows down that way with my good friends Elena B Williams and Tom Francis under the name 'Pacific Heart Tour'. We may do another run of shows together as that was super fun! If you want to keep up to date with possible shows and Festivals in your area you can visit my website, www.andreakirwin.com

A VIBRANT SLICE OF LOCAL LIFE New Brighton Farmers Market is one of the shire’s hidden gems With New Brighton beach on one side and Marshalls Creek - a popular swimming spot - on the other, it’s a pretty little market surrounded by natural beauty. For many locals it’s a weekly ritual. A leisurely breakfast under the Poinciana tree has become part of the Tuesday morning routine. New Brighton is one of the smaller farmers market in the region, but that’s part of its charm. There’s a real sense of community here, and the farmers know their customers by name. And while small, the market has all bases covered – there’s fruit and veg, sourdough bread, honey, milk and cheese, coffee, olive, tempeh, dips and spice, nuts, seafood and lamb – you can pretty much pick up your entire weekly food shop here. Food is not the only attraction of this market - people come to socialise, connect with their community and get in touch with the farmers who grow their food. Students from the local school visit each week, then go back and make lunch from their haul. There’s a kid’s space with free arts and crafts each week, giving mums with young children the chance to relax and get out of the house. There’s support for local musos too, with a live busking spot each week. It’s a far cry from the depersonalised, corporate supermarket shopping experience with its flouro lights, processed foods and bad muzak. The market gives back financially, too. Money doesn’t end up in the hands of a giant multinational – it stays in the local community, and helps support local farmers to keep doing what they’re doing. As a not-for-profit, the market also donates thousands of dollars to community, with a focus on supporting the growth of local school kitchen gardens.

There’s a real satisfaction in knowing that every dollar you spend on your shopping will go toward supporting farmers, the local community and a more sustainable future. www.byronlifemag.com 67

how to self-drive to this sacred site

Gallipoli stands staggered by time and memory, a humbling dedication to the fallen ANZACS and Turkish soldiers who met in bloody battle on the beaches and in the gullies. Now covered in pine forests and wildflowers rather than blood and bullets, this slender peninsula between the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea is a place of pilgrimage visited by both Turks and foreigners who pay homage to those who fought and sacrificed it all for god, crown and country.

Driving in Turkey

While ANZAC Day tours on April 25th see thousands swamp the cove at the rising of the sun, solemn solitude can be found during lesser-visited times of the year. While there are bus tours available from Istanbul, a more intimate journey can be had by self-driving.

Driving in Turkey, particularly Istanbul, is the most challenging location in the world that I’ve driven. It’s more hectic and unpredictable than Paris, Rome or Athens, and that’s saying something! What to expect – Turkish drivers are brazen. They hardly use indicators, if they want to get past you they will honk their horns and flash their lights and it’s up to you to get out of their way if they are in a hurry. Motorways in Istanbul get so congested that people stand in the lanes selling food and beverages. Be prepared for other vehicles to push in front of you even when there is absolutely no gap whatsoever. The driving is aggressive, however once you are used to it, you will find your way around easily. TIP - Before you depart, get an International Drivers License. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain from RACQ. You may not need one to rent your vehicle, I didn’t need one, but it doesn’t hurt to obtain one as a backup.

In Istanbul

Istanbul is a beautiful, cultural city. I felt safe and welcome during my time in Istanbul and wandered the narrow streets of the Old City without hesitation.

BUCKET LIST TICKS What to see and do – The Blue Mosque is a must. Visit the splendid Hagia Sophia. Wander the Topkapi Palace for an insight into Sultans past, the Harem and Crown Jewels. The Basilica Cistern is another archeological marvel. The Dolmabahçe Palace is just fascinating - key features are the Baccarat crystal staircase and the ceremonial hall with its 4.5 tonne chandelier. The Archaeology Museum displays one of the world’s richest collections of classical antiquities, and of course, browse and shop The Grand Bazaar. This Bazaar is more than 500 years old but still one of the largest covered bazaars in the world with 60 streets, 18 fountains and 12 mosques among 5,000 shops. Buy some authentic Turkish Delight, drink some Turkish coffee – it will blow your socks off. Then, sit in a café among the chaos of the city streets and experience the cultural pastime of smoking a nargile or hookah.

Where to stay – To immerse yourself in the culture, choose a boutique hotel in the Old City. Navigating by car is difficult but most hotels offer parking off-site which they will arrange for you. We stayed at the ornate and lavish, yet inexpensive, Sultan Tughra Hotel nestled deep in the cobbled streets of the Old City. The rooms are bold in deep red velvet and gold trimmings. We were greeted by Turkish nuts and nibbles on a bed adorned by rose petals and there was a ginormous mirror on the ceiling. Certainly, an experience to remember! Within easy walking distance are most of the must-sees in Istanbul and there are many restaurants and cafes to be explored along the nearby narrow alleyways.

Sultan Tughra

Where to eat - The restaurants located on the lower level of the Galata Bridge which connects Old City with Galata makes for a fun and unique place to dine while providing a beautiful view of the mosque domes and towers dominating the Old City's skyline.

TRAVEL

The drive to Gallipoli

Eceabat Gallipoli sculpture

Rural Turkey countryside on way to Gallipoli To escape the madness of Istanbul and get a head-start on your road trip to the Gallipoli Peninsula, consider spending a night along the coast overlooking the Sea of Marmara. My husband and I stayed in an inexpensive hotel in the town of Kumburgaz and woke with a beautiful sea view for less than $100 per night. From Istanbul, it’s roughly a four-hour drive to the town of Eceabat, which is the nearest town to the Gallipoli monuments. Don’t be confused with the small town called Gallipoli that you will encounter along the way, this is not your destination!

Chanuk Bair

Eceabat is a great place to grab some lunch. It is also the location where you can catch a ferry across the Dardanelles to Canakkale. While in Eceabat, be sure to check out the large sculpture depicting the battle between Turks and foreign soldiers as well as monuments dotted along the waterline dedicated to the Turkish soldiers who fought to defend their land.

DID YOU KNOW? The lost city of Troy is only a 30-minute drive from Canakkale and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a replica Trojan wooden horse at the entry to the site of these ancient ruins.

ANZAC Cove and the Gallipoli memorials Gallipoli statue

The road from the Battle Museum will wind you along the peninsula, to Ari Burnu and ANZAC Cove. Look up at the jagged landmarks that are deeply etched in Anzac legend; the Sphinx, Plugge's Plateau, Russell's Top. Backtrack back to the museum and a loop road takes you on a one-way voyage up and over the hills to iconic battle sites and cemeteries; Lone Pine, Johnston’s Jolly, The Nek and Chanuk Bair. Plinths, statues and gravestones are a stark reminder of what once was. Hike like an ANZAC - To get a small appreciation for the battle against the harsh topography the ANZACS faced, you can hike the three-kilometre up-hill journey from ANZAC Cove to Lone Pine Cemetery. One of the perks of self-driving is that you can explore historic trenches and walk forested pathways over ancient battlefields at your own pace. Where to stay

ANZAC Cove From Eceabat it’s a short back-track along the main road to the turn-off to ANZAC Cove. Soon after the turn-off you will come across one of the best military museums in the world. The audio-visual presentations move you beyond expectation while the remnants and encounters retold are beyond belief.

HINT – even if you choose to self-drive, you can still employ the expertise of a local guide whose passion and knowledge will impart a greater understanding of the conflict and area.

There is a range of accommodation in the nearby towns of Eceabat and Canakkale, however to truly immerse yourself in the Gallipoli experience, I recommend staying at the Gallipoli Houses. Run by Belgian militaryhistory buff Eric Goossens and his wife Ozlem, The Gallipoli Houses is set in a farming village in the heart of the Gallipoli National Park. This humble accommodation has hosted Julia Gillard and Sir Peter Jackson among others and has a private display of Gallipoli war memorabilia. One of the most moving moments of my journey was here, when at sunset, my ex-military husband looked toward the horizon where you could see the outlines of the memorials on the hills and said, “I wonder how many soldiers looked at this same view each night, wondering if they would be alive to see the sun again tomorrow.”

FOODIES

from Bondi to Byron The simple pleasure of coffee and cuisine reflects where we are from. Arguably, two of Australia’s original hipsters, Jean of Dip Café and David of Bun Coffee, have brought their unique fusion of food and caffeine from Bondi to Byron. Between them, they have a combined experience of more than 50 years in the café scene and have seen the landscape shift considerably over this time. With a working relationship of more than 24 years and counting, they know what it takes to survive and thrive.

With relationships unanimously at the forefront of what both businesses define as success, their shared working history from Bondi to Byron is worth celebrating. Jean’s café in the heart of Bondi saw the likes of Jodhi Meares, Brian Brown and Michael Hutchence as regulars to name a few. He brought his iconic eatery to Byron 8 years ago and hasn’t looked back.

“As soon as I visited Bun and saw it was David it was a case of ‘it’s you, when can we start.’ David and his team at Bun have always provided quality of product and service that we never experienced elsewhere in all our years of dealing with coffee suppliers,” says Jean.

David established Bun Coffee in Byron 13 years ago. When the two crossed paths again in Byron when Jean was searching for a specialty coffee roaster, their old business relationship reignited.

“Over the years I’ve also owned and operated cafes which is where my interest in coffee roasting originally started, so I understand the needs of the cafes, what’s involved and how important coffee is as part of the overall café mix; from the consistent delivery to the quality of the coffee, the equipment and the actual final coffee that someone drinks,” he said.

“David roasted a specific blend for us, it contained a unique Indonesian bean which we just had to have. It was a really hard bean to roast we later discovered but David found a way, his roasting knowledge and methods are second to none. We continued to serve that blend for many years,” recalls Jean.

70 www.byronlifemag.com

For David it’s a similar story.

With Dip listed as the number one Byron Bay Café on TripAdvisor, it was imperative for Jean to have a quality, local coffee roaster.

“Our menu is all about providing our customers with a local produce experience, including the coffee. We didn’t want to supply our customers with Sydney or Melbourne coffees which they can get anywhere,” continues Jean. The pair reminisce how far they’ve both come. For David, his current location in the Arts and Industry Estate was simply a warehouse in a paddock and an unwavering dream to roast quality coffee. For Jean, escaping the Bondi rat-race and taking a chance on a café business in a quiet side-street with no kerb and guttering at the time. Their leaps of faith have paid off. For these two local businesses celebrating such momentous milestones, Byron is glad they made the move.
