With the release of their Platinum-selling 4th Studio Album On the Road Again, Katchafire are one of the hardest working and most respected collectives to come out of New Zealand. Sam from CORE caught up with Logan to have a chat about performing the Hakka in Brazil, their upcoming Aussie tour and their visit to Mack-Town! So, how would you Q describe your sounds to those who may not be familiar? A

I guess we’d be alternative and classic roots or Aotearoa reggae.

So there are eight of you Q in Katchafire – that must get crowded on tour! Do you grind each other’s gears, or are you guys pretty chilled out? It does get crowded! We live A in each other’s pockets, so we try and spread out as much as possible and try not to get on each other’s nerves too much. We’re all pretty good mates, so that makes a difference! Your new album On the Q Road Again has gone Double-Platinum – are you guys happy with how its been received? A

We had a bit of a slow start, having the album released in

Australia and New Zealand. We finally had it released in USA, and now is online worldwide on iTunes, which has bumped it up! With notorious venues Q such as House of Blues and The Mezzanine in the US sold out, that’s got to be a good feeling? It’s really starting to pick A up in the states and especially California and Hawaii. I guess a lot of Americans like to travel to Hawaii. We’re really humbled by the success we’ve had and that’s why we keep coming back to the US a couple of times a year.

Have you ever been asked to do the Hakka while on tour?

[Laughs] YES! And in the A most random countries too! We were asked in Brazil, Prague and a few other countries in

Europe. It’s a chance to spread our culture, which is always fun! Katchafire is also coming Q over to Oz in August for a month-long tour – is this your first time in Oz? Nah, we’ve all got family A over here, so it’s kind of a second home to us. We try and make the effort to see everyone while we’re here, so it’s usually extended stays [laughs]. Are you looking forward to Q coming to Mackay? Do you think you’ll get the chance to explore the area while you’re here? Yeah, really excited! I don’t A think we’ve been to Mackay before. The Aussie schedules are usually pretty full on, but hopefully we can make time for some fishing, or visit a few beaches while we’re up there.

How did you get into modelling? It all started in 2009 when I started entering local comps for designers and I found an interest in it. Since then, I’ve been taking any opportunities that come my way! What do you do to earn your pennies? I’ve been at Beach Worx in Airlie Beach since 2009! What’s next for you? I’d like to pursue modelling, but probably not as a full-time career. I’m thinking about studying, so I’ll just go with the flow and take it as it comes.

Michael Miller (Deejay Micko) has been Deejaying for around 10 years. He started his career as a young 17 year old pumping out all the latest and greatest old school Hip Hop, R‘n’B and Funky House, at all the school house parties on the Gold Coast. A year later Mick found himself being recruited by the top radio station on the coast to be a resident of the biggest u/18’s dance party in Queensland. Now playing at the busiest nightclub in North Queensland and giving the club world renowned name for Dance music, this was a backpacker’s home away from home. After being inspired by a friend and the love of music, Jon knew being a DJ was something he wanted to do. Many months of self teaching and self belief proved vital in the role he wanted to achieve. He has now been belting out tunes for over 12 years. After first starting out playing under 18 gigs, Jon then found himself spinning to the weekend reveller. This then led to bigger and brighter things, including work with a well known Dance radio station. Jon also now finds himself back in the studio remixing and working on some original projects, which are soon to be released. His work in the studio and on the decks have been influenced by many big names in the DJ world from Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, David Guetta, Deadmau5, Daft Punk, and has massive respect for the Australian Dance Music Scene.

If you find schools of baitfish on the surface, throwing big blooping poppers can also be a very exciting way to catch big GT’s, Red Bass and Coral Trout. These fish are generally large in size so once again heavy gear is recommended.

Fishing the outer shoals and continental shelf can be literally the trip of a lifetime for most keen anglers. Heading further east and passing the main body of the Great Barrier Reef, you start to enter into reef and shoal areas that now can hold a different list of fish species that are not often found inshore. These fish species are more common to the “outside” or continental shelf side of the GBR region. When the currents are favourable you will find wahoo, dolphin fish (also know as mahi mahi) yellowfin tuna and several species of billfish available (more on the billfish another time). Closer to the shallower shoals and reefs, Dog Tooth Tuna, Big Giant Trevally, Red Bass, Giant Barracuda, Big Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout and sharks call these places home. These outer shoal areas are generally best fished with heavy tackle only. Although you will have a lot of fun trolling with 15kg game outfits, you will lose a lot of gear and 24 or even 37kg is recommended. Dog Tooth Tuna have a knack of grabbing lures and heading back to their “kennels” so the heavier tackle is suggested especially if you find spots where the “doggies” are. Hard bodied lures work best out here but you will need to make sure that all the terminal gear is of XXX strength.

Departing the shoals and heading wider is where the other pelagic fish come into play. The Dolphin Fish, Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna will readily eat “Pusher” style lures in a variety of sizes. Hard bodied lures also account for fish at times. Tackle wise you can get away with 15kg troll outfits and you will have a lot of fun but watch out if a sizeable marlin jumps on, you will be wishing you had 24 or 37kg out there! All these fish are can be found in waters out over the continental shelf but best locations are tide or current lines which usually means water temperature breaks. These areas often have flotsam or floating debris or weed, which are excellent spots for finding the Dolphin Fish in particular. Dolphin Fish are a very acrobatic fish when hooked and will put on quite a show. This acrobatics will continue when you get them in the boat so be prepared. If you are keeping one for the table once gaffed and hauled on board a sharp blow to the head, bled and iced immediately will have this tasty one in top condition for the table. Wahoo are known to be the fastest fish that swims so lookout when they hook up, your reel will be smoking! Make sure you preset the drags on all

your gear to 1/3rd the breaking strain of your line to ensure you don’t get “popped off” on the initial burst once hooked. Generally lures are rigged with some wire at the hook end to ensure the Wahoo’s razor sharp teeth do not cut you off. Hooks need to be razor sharp (as all hooks should be!) to ensure a good hook up. Yellowfin Tuna are open ocean travellers. They are great fighters and make great eating either steaked or as sashimi. Once hooked they will run hard and often deep. Usually when fought from a stationary boat they will lay on their side and circle round and round making very hard work on pulling them to the surface. If you continue to drive the boat forward during the fight you will gradually break this circle motion and make it easier to land this highly prized fish. Once again if you are keeping the yellowfin for the

table it is paramount that you bleed and ice slurry the fish ASAP upon capture to ensure top condition is maintained. With the distances involved to fishing the outer shoals and continental shelf you do need a good reliable boat. It makes better sense if you are heading out with another boat. This makes for good safety in the event of a break down and you can spread out somewhat to find the fish. Most of the fish you will catch out there are of edible quality so make sure you have plenty of ice to look after the catch once bled. It is always great to take home a good feed but only take what you need for immediate consumption and it is best to release the rest for next time!

This month we caught up with BUD KELLOW, or as he is known by the Whitsunday locals, “The Shell Man”. This larger-than-life character told us all about his love of fishing and shells and that he was the first person to introduce bait and tackle into service stations in QLD. When Council departments try to stop him he told them to get stuffed, which is what he spends most of his time doing today. Stuffing fish and crustaceans for mad keen fishermen!!! After completing an apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery in 1973, Bud become a registered builder just a few years later. The flexibility of being able to pick and choose your hours allowed Bud to pursue his passion for fishing. In 1981, Bud put his tools down and decided to make his passion his job. “I opened a bait and tackle shop in Capalaba, Brisbane. I ran it out off a retired service station site and before long the business just took off! Everyday I would wake up and be excited about going to work. I could walk and talk my passion and more importantly I was able to share it with all my customers.” It was through this passion that Bud, not only became the man everyone would go to for help and advice about all things fishing, but a man that would become your friend and your mate. He would make time for anyone and his loyal clientele would become life long friends, some of which he is still in touch with today. Although life was good for him, he knew that eventually the site would be sold and he would have to find another location for his business. Sometime later it did. Needing a new location, Bud approached an operating service station close to his original site and still on the main highway. After some tough negotiating, Bud was given the okay to move his bait and tackle business into the service station. Little did he know that he had started a whole new 24 • www.coremag.com.au

trend and created a new meaning for the word ‘service’ station! “Before I moved into the servo, they would sell approximately 125 thousand litres of fuel every month. After 18 months we were pumping 500 to 600 thousand litres. We went from 3 to 10 staff, and I introduced another trend being the first service station in the area to open 24 hours. Before long we introduced milk, bread and basic groceries, hot food, fresh and frozen bait, fishing tackle, rod building and repair service. All the other servos quickly caught on and before long everyone was offering similar retail products. When Council tried to enforce the removal of our expanding retail products, I went around the area and photographed all the other servo’s trading the same products. On meeting with Council, I laid out about 100 images across the table and said, if you take me, you will have to take the lot!” Bud said. Three weeks later Bud received official permission from Council to continue his retail operation, and the laws for services station trading changed all over QLD. Although his passion became his business, Bud never lost the desire to catch the next big one! It was the catching of a big one and the want to keep it forever that ignited Buds passion for taxidermy. “I landed a 130kg Black Marlin off point lookout near Stradbroke Island. I decided to find a taxidermist to have it mounted. With only one person practicing taxidermy

within a 100km radius, of Brisbane, I knew it would be an expensive process. I nearly fell off my chair when I received the quote!” he said. Bud came across a magazine article several weeks later selling videos and books on how to learn the art of taxidermy. $150 US dollars later and hours pouring over the material, he decided to give it a go. “My first attempt was successful. I mounted a 6kg Green Job fish that I had caught off Cape Morton. I finally got to complete my Marlin after much trial and error. I went on practicing and learning the art over the next 5 years. I have mounted approximately 250 specimens, both fish and crustaceans.” Bud has become known as one of the best taxidermists in QLD. He specialises in combining his skills in the art with his carpentry qualifications to make some amazing settings, including crustaceans on carved timber bases. Famously known for his fighting crab settings and his very affordable prices, it’s no surprise he gets orders from all over the State. I couldn’t believe how alive they looked. Bud was more than happy to give me full details on the process and has even written a book on the art. “You could just about stuff anything!” he said. Curious I asked if he had ever been asked to stuff something unusual. “Unusual, no! When I first started I would get asked to stuff protected animals and I am assuming word got around fast that I would not have anything to do with it, and if I found out who you were I would stuff you! They soon stopped calling.” He said laughing. “ I did get a call from a woman asking me if I stuffed cats? I said I would do it but only if I had too. When I asked her where her cat was she said she had buried it. I asked how long ago, and she said three days. I couldn’t help but laugh and reply, don’t worry dear your cat is already stuffed!” Bud is now semi retired and living in the Whitsundays, still waking up every day happy that he is able to work on his passions. When it comes to car people, there are as many different types as there are different personalities in the world. Everything from the purist who restores cars to their former glory of how they rolled out of the factory, to the Hard Core (pun intended) modifier who doesn’t care if it’s original or if that motor was an option in the original delivery, but more about what they want out of the car, and then there is everything else in between. I can’t say I’m a purist, in fact I always said I never collected cars or restored them to original, mainly because I was more interested in cruising and racing them (at the local drag strip), or more simply put “we buy our toys to play with, not collect”. Not that I’m implying there is anything wrong with the purists or collectors, it just wasn’t me. It always seems too much like a kid at Christmas getting a cool present to only sit it on his shelf. I guess I was always the kid who ran outside and starting playing with it straight away, and while I might have worn the toy out over time, you can be guaranteed that I loved every minute of it. So every time I get the chance to speak to a fellow car person, I always like to start off by gauging how much of a purist they are. One of this month’s Boys Toys is Maurice Barbeler’s 1970 HG Monaro GTS Coupe, and after speaking to Maurice I’d place him about half way along my scale of purist level. Maurice’s HG Coupe originally came with a Holden 186S 6 cylinder, not to be confused with the standard 186 Holden motor. But let’s face it, it’s still only a 186 and they don’t exactly excite most people. So you can understand why Maurice’s Monaro is running a 400 Small Block Chev.

Butting up to the 400 SBC is a fully manualised Turbo 400 transmission running through to a 9 inch diff with 4.11 gears. Now while I’m sure the 4.11 gears make the motor hum nice for highway driving, Maurice doesn’t seem to concerned and rest assured I’m sure it’s music to his ears. Now I could give you a full run down on the history of the Monaro, but I doubt many of our readers aren’t familiar with them in the first place, so I’ll just give you a quick synopsis. The HG Coupe was the last of the first generation, or the original shape before it changed with the HQ and so on. The main difference with the HG to the previous models were the slightly cleaner lines of the car and a little less brightwork, as well the HG’s had a little softer suspension making for a smoother ride. Maurice, who is an Operation Manager for a coal seam and gas testing company, says he has owned the Monaro for a little over 4 years now, joking about how times flies when having fun. The engine swap was performed prior to Maurice getting her, so he has only really needed to clean her up a little and give her a lick of paint. The paint was applied by Moranbah Panel Works and closely resembles a cross between indie orange and yellow.

The next task for Maurice is to give the boot area a little clean up for the general cancer that is more than common of cars of this era. I swear if I ever get the chance to meet the person who designed the drip rails and boot rails in those years I will have a stern word to them for the pain and grief they have caused so many car enthusiasts. But enough of me whinging, back to Maurice and his HG. So apart from a little bit more of a clean-up there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a lot more in store for the Monaro at this stage, apart from Maurice enjoying his pride and joy that is, because not all toys are meant to be collected. When asked if he had any other toys on the go, he admits while he would love to have a shed full (I mean who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t) itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not practical, but we can always dream right?

NOW...

THEN... In 1965, about a year after the release of the Mustang, Ford decided that they were going to toughen up the Mustang line. So they brought in Carroll Shelby to make their pony car compete with GM’s Chevy Corvette. In order to do this, Ford produced a normal white fastback without rear seats or hoods and sent them to Shelby so they could do whatever it was they wanted to do.

THE CHANGES... Shelby added and deleted several things to/from the Mustang. An aluminum intake was added to the engine to push it from 271 horsepower to 306. The Shelby headers came out in front of the rear wheels and the car had a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed transmission. The exterior design had several changes that wasn’t all too noticeable from far. The Mustang got a fibreglass hood with functional hood scoops. The side of the car got a blue stripe across the base of the body with the words “GT 350” behind the front 15” wheels. Also on the exterior, while all the original Mustang emblems were removed, Shelby added a little horse emblem on the driver’s side of the grill. The suspension was a big part of the Shelby modifications - A larger front stabiliser bar, a 1” sway bar and adjustable Koni suspension. On the interior, the vacant rear seat area was the new spot for the spare tyre. The interior only came in black, with a 3-spoke steering wheel. Only 562 Shelby Mustangs were made; 12 were race models; 36 were “R” models; 516 were street GT 350 models. These cars were all released by Carroll Shelby on January 27, 1965.

PRICE... The price of the base Shelby was about $4,000. They weren’t quick and fast sellers, but they were bought by real car enthusiasts, which is who they were intended for in the first place.

The Ford Mustang – Shelby GT500 – raises the bar high on performance with the introduction of the new 2013 model that delivers 650 horsepower and a top speed of more than 200mph (you have to admit, it would float anyone’s boat). The 5.8-litre V8 aluminium-block engine produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world. Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimised for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new crossdrilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new carbon fibre driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. A larger, more-efficient supercharger flowing more air through the engine is key to helping produce the massive 650 horsepower. The new TVS series 2300 creates 2.3 litres of displacement and is a unique design to the 5.8-litre engine. The entire cooling system has been significantly updated on the new 5.8-litre engine. It now includes a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, a more efficient charge air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and an intercooler heat exchanger with volume increased 36 percent. The front fascia and splitters were modified to handle the extreme loads at 200 mph, resulting in a car that tracks more securely and feels more planted to the road at higher speeds. It offers 33 percent more effective aero loading at 160 mph.

On Saturday 11th of August, you’ll see a convoy of comically clad classic cars make their way to the Blue Water Quay, marking the end of their ten day venture through Queensland. The convoy consists of close to 400 everyday Queenslanders taking part in the 2012 XXXX Gold “Cotton and Cane” Variety Bash starting in the sleepy cotton farm of Dalby making their way through the heart of Queensland ending their venture in Mackay.

Locals Robin and Wayne Webster have been participating in the event every year since 1992, decking out their 1948 Ford Pickup in a different children’s theme each time.

Organisers of the Bash, which began in 1985 by adventurer Dick Smith, say the event is an adventure of a lifetime.

“The camaraderie on the trip is just amazing and it’s so good to see them every year, its just like a family reunion.” Having participated in the event for so long, the couple are now the volunteer coordinators for the event in our area on behalf of Variety.

“You can’t begin to imagine the fun, entertainment and camaraderie when close to 400 like-minded people get together and travel nearly 4000kms through some of the most out of the way places in Queensland,” says Event Director Rob Goodwin. “The annual XXXX Gold Variety Bash is Variety Australia’s most successful charity motoring event. It is the focal point of fundraising efforts for many hundreds of Variety supporters. Money raised helps Variety – the Children’s Charity empower Queensland kids who are sick, disadvantaged or who have special needs to live, laugh and learn,” says Rob.

“We’ve been Batman, Santa, Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder to name a few. The children just love it.” Staying in costume (and character) the whole trip, Robyn says putting on the makeup at five in the morning is the most challenging, but seeing the kids faces makes it worth it. “There are a lot of children that need help and they inspire us every time we see them.”

“It is a lot of hard work to be involved with the fundraising beforehand and during the trip. Also the days are long and there is some camping as well, but it is well worth it. There’s so many memories and amazing moments you get from these trips.” Local philanthropist, Madonna Stevens from Walkerston has been participating in the charity event for the past six years with her husband bashing their way in their trusty classic vehicles.

Active ... in the City! “We have friends that have been doing this for over twenty years and we’ve always wanted to get involved but we owned a cane farm and the crushing was on at the time. Since we’ve sold the farm we knew it was time to go on the bash and help all the children.” Madonna and her husband will be bashing together side by side this year in their 1976 F100 decked out as a cowboy’s 1800’s chuck wagon. “We used to go in two different cars and raise a little extra money but I thought I better retire my car as it was a 1929 vintage Whippet. It’s made on a wooden frame with wooden wheels and bashing on the dirt roads was a little too rough for it. It moved constantly, so I thought I had better keep it safe for later.”

Since the XXXX Gold Variety Bash started in Queensland in 1990, the fundraiser has gathered over $16 million with last year alone raising $1.325 dollars for children in need across Queensland.

You know you are helping the children that really need assistance, then you get to meet them along the way and present them with wheelchairs and computers. “Last year we presented the special school here in Mackay with a new school bus. They can take the children confined to wheelchairs everywhere they need to go which was really wonderful.” When the convoy rolls into town on Saturday 11 August, they will be gathering at the Blue Water Quay for the afternoon where the public can take a peek at all the classic cars and the must-see costumes before they move onto the MECC for the presentation dinner. On Saturday 11 August, the 2012 XXXX Gold Variety Bash will cross the finishing line in Mackay and on Sunday 12 August, the Konvoy for Kids will depart from the Mackay Showgrounds at 10:30am and finishing at 3:00pm.

The local Reef Festival heats up from 16-19 August with lots more events on the foreshore. Fireworks, live music, competitions, the pirate themed Street Parade and heaps of family fun will be on offer. The Whitsunday Reef Festival is a celebration and showcase of our community. It is designed to celebrate our community values, local talent and the beautiful natural surroundings that we are lucky enough to call “home”. The festival is for all ages. This month we dropped in on Linda and Shane Sayers to find out how life is for them now after Shane’s life saving operation. I’m sure most of you have heard about the Sayers family, and the challenges they faced surrounding Shane’s unexpected illness. Whether you know this amazing family or not, doesn’t matter. What matters is that everyone should know how a small group of people came together and with the support of an inspirational community, beat the odds and helped to save a husband and a father. This story is about shear determination and love, and how this alone saved Shane! I have waited until last to write this story because I knew that I would struggle to put into words the emotional and heart felt journey I had personally followed. The story of a man who just wanted to survive one more day to be with his family, and the discovery of a group of people who gave up their time and money to make it possible. Shane began experiencing blackouts and headaches about a year ago. He did not think much of it until his wife Linda witnessed it for herself. Shane was sitting on his daughter’s bed saying goodnight when he suddenly collapsed on the floor. Knowing something was not right, Linda booked an appointment with their family doctor. At first the doctor thought that Shane was suffering from epilepsy and sent him for an MRI. The results came back and showed that Shane wasn’t suffering from epilepsy, but instead he was diagnosed with a large tumour on the brain. After a trip to Townsville to undergo numerous testing, it was determined that this tumour was not like anything they had ever seen. Due to this and the positioning of the tumour, the surgeons were not willing to operate until Shane had lost his quality of life. “At this point I felt like I didn’t have any quality of life.” Shane said. “I was experiencing severe headaches, vertigo, vomiting, dizziness and loss of vision. I was taking lots of pain killers to get through my day. I knew that my symptoms would only get worse.”

Within 8 weeks, Shane and Linda were off to Sydney for a consultation. Although he was also concerned about the risks involved, Dr Teo was still willing to operate. The next challenge was how they would be able to pay the $60,000 required in advance for Shane to receive the surgery. “We just didn’t have that kind of money!” Linda said. ‘We couldn’t afford private health insurance and Dr Teo was not able to operate under the public system. When we asked Dr Teo what would happen if Shane didn’t get the surgery, he said that he would eventually die.” On returning home to Proserpine, Linda managed to pull together some money from family and friends. However this would not come close to what they needed. That is when she turned to the local community for help. Cathie Evans, who had only just recently moved to town, heard about Shane and soon became the driving force behind the fundraising. Cathie went from street to street and business to business asking them to support an auction night she was putting together. Cathie not only gained the support she needed, but also inspired some businesses to put together their own fundraising ideas, including Coles and Any Signs and Printing, who ran a fundraising BBQ over two weekends. Cathie received cash donations from McDonald’s in Cannonvale, Allciv and Colony Building Group to name just a few. They also received anonymous donations from businesses and people across the region, with one person donating $10,000! “The support we received was overwhelming and it made me feel proud to be apart of a community that cared so much,” Cathie said.

Not willing to give up, Linda and Shane decided to seek a second opinion.

The total amount raised was $76,000, which would also cover the flights and accommodation for Shane and Linda.

After some research and advise from family and friends, we knew that Shane would need the best surgeon available.

On the 13th June 2012, Shane received his operation. After 8 hours of surgery, Dr Teo informed Linda that he was able to remove the tumour in full. However it was one of the hardest surgeries he had ever performed and he couldn’t say how Shane would recover.

So they decided to seek out Australia’s own world-renowned brain surgeon, Dr Charlie Teo.

Upon awaking from surgery, the first thing Shane noticed was that the pressure in his head was gone and he had no headache. “Dr Teo was

amazed at my recovery, I was released from hospital on the Thursday and flew home the next day.” Shane now wears glasses to correct his vision, but other than that he is feeling great. Tests on the tumour came back benign and Shane is expected to live a long and normal life. “I would like to thank all of the media who got my story out to the community, and the community for their support. A big thank you to my friends and family also. I just wouldn’t have made it without any of you.” Said Shane. So next time you have an opportunity to help someone, don’t just walk by thinking that there is nothing you can do. You just don’t know how far a $2 sausage sizzle can go. It may even help to saves someone’s life, just like it did for Shane.

STEPHEN DOBSON has struck gold with a new life as a Mackay local finding all the benefits there are of a Miner’s Career in Australia. Spying the opportunities from his overcast origin of England, he has now found the career he’s always wanted along with the perfect life balance he needed. With no complaints or regrets Stephen and his family are now both happily living the Miner’s Life in Mackay.

So what’s your story of your path to the Mines in a nutshell?

Basically I started as diesel A fitter apprentice when I was 17 in my home city of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. I worked for a heavy equipment hire company. I was involved with coal mines but not primarily as we did work on construction sites, petro chemical, power stations, oil refineries etc. I left that company after my apprenticeship and went on to work in London, England. I worked on a section of the channel tunnel rail link repairing tunnel boring machines, conveyor belts etc which is all a form of mining. I then worked for Komatsu Europe, remanufacturing components for mining equipment mainly out of Africa. I then had a long stretch working in the construction industry as Field Service Fitter for an Irish owned company. I took a position working for Finning UK as a Field Service Engineer. For Finning I worked on a number of coal mines north east of England. It was then off to Australia in November last year. The reason for migrating was to get a better work/life balance as its all work, work, work in the UK. I’m enjoying working in the mine shop at Hastings park and intend to have a long successful career there. When you started out as Q a Diesel fitter, did you have intentions for working in the mining industry and what were your career goals at the time of starting out? A

I did not have intentions to work solely in the mining

industry because at the time my company had equipment that covered all industries. My career goals as an apprentice were to gain as much experience on as much equipment as possible and also the ability to work on my own in difficult circumstances. How did you jump from Q Diesel fitter to Field Service Engineer? Was there further training required? I made the leap into field A service as a third year apprentice because a great percentage of our work was in the field. This included a 24 hour call out roster for seven days at a time. This was very demanding and basically you either sink or swim. I also worked away from home on numerous occasions. What kind of requirements Q did you need to acquire to go from Europe to working in Australian Mining? Primarily I had to supply A all trade certificates but also I had to provide evidence that my experience was relevant so on arrival to Australia I could hit the ground running. There were also police checks for myself and my partner. You say you moved here for Q a better work/life balance, what kind of expectations did you have for working in Australia? Have your expectations been met yet? I expected a great deal of A time off due to the even time roster and a decent salary to go with it. The work life balance in the UK is basically all work and little time off. So far it has met my

expectations as I work a lifestyle roster including a lot of time off. What do you find to be Q the best benefit working in the Australian Mining Industry? The fact that there is lots A of work is the main benefit and knowing you have good job

security. In the UK you’re always worried about redundancies due to the economic climate. I’ve experienced redundancy and being unemployed and believe me it is not nice.

How have your career decisions better shaped your life?

My partner Kate and two A children have lived comfortably without the need for Kate to work so she can focus on raising the kids. We also have regular holidays and have seen a lot of the world together.

To further my career with A Hastings as I find they are a great company to work for and have a real promising future.

But once you’re in there even starting out as an operator, you can work your way up to bigger and better things and have a great stable career.”

Our August cover girl is the beautiful 26-year-old Sarah Wisely, a Human Resources Officer, who works for her family-owned and operated company, the Wisely Group. I sat down to chat to Sarah about life, love and her ambition to join her brothers in taking on the family company after their father retires. 56 â&#x20AC;˘ www.coremag.com.au

The only girl of three children to Kim Ellis and Bob Wisely, Sarah is the middle child with an older brother Danny 28 and a younger brother Adam 24. You can be assured that this amazing young woman never suffered the classic middle child syndrome and her brothers quickly learnt that she was not to be messed with!

Sarah grew up in Clermont until she was 8 years old, then her family relocated to Pleystowe for a couple of years, then finally settling in Walkerston. They all attended St Johns Catholic school then finished their schooling at Mirani High. “I can remember mum and dad starting the business when I was 9 years old. Dad worked out in the mines during the week and when he was home on weekends they would be in the home office working together”. The Wisely Group of companies has been established for roughly eighteen years now. “Both mum and dad put all their spare energy into the business, after ensuring that us kids had the best of upbringings and this effort is clearly recognisable in the company today. They have worked so hard and its great to see that all their efforts have paid off.” Sarah said. In 2001 Sarah played school-based ruby union. “We had been training hard for 10 weeks and our team was extremely excited to play our first game. Within the first 15 minutes and without touching the ball, I was seriously injured. Another player had kicked my knee during a tackle and it tore all the ligaments from my bone. I have had three knee reconstructions with donor ligaments, metal plates and a bone graph taken from my hip and inserted in my knee and leg.” Sarah was told that she would never be able to participate in any sport again, run or wear high heel shoes. Although she still has to carry a special card as proof of her injury, as she sets off all the alarms when travelling through security check points in airports. She is training harder than ever at the gym, and without ever risking being actively involved in any competitive sport, she is more relieved that she can still get around in some of her many high heel shoes. “I know it sounds very girly and princess like, but I would absolutely die, if I was not able to wear my heels. They are like my very own trademark!” Sarah said laughing.

In 2004 Sarah received a scholarship to study in Japan for a year as an exchange student. “This would have to be one of the best years of my life! Living away from home in another country, I had no choice but to grow up fast. I learnt so much about myself.” “After a year studying the language and culture of this amazing country, I had become fluent in the language. I can’t say that I am still fluent today, but it would be easy to pick it up again.” Although Sarah was always destined to take up her position in the family company, this wasn’t her only passion. “Before working in the family business, I did a stint in retail as a make up artist for a number of cosmetic companies. Clinque make up artistry would have to be where my passion is the strongest. I just love it!” Sarah said. “It was great to find something of my own that I was really good at.” To this day Sarah still does freelance makeup work, for weddings, hens’ nights, parties and special occasions. Starting off in an administration role in reception, she worked hard to complete her Cert 4 in Human Resources. “Just because it was a family company, didn’t mean I was given the easy road to the top. I had to grow and learn just like anyone else. I would never have changed a thing as I have learnt so much about the mining industry and how I can be the best at what I do.” Sarah now works alongside the Senior HR Manager and is proud that she wasn’t ever handed this position, but had to work hard to become the professional career-driven woman she is today. Once her dad retires, Sarah alongside her brothers, will take over the company. “I never imagined that I would want to run a business, but while I am still passionate about the company and the industry and I can continue to contribute to the growth and success of the company I will give it my all.” she said. “Working with family is amazing and although there are times that can become quite tense, when we don’t agree on certain things, working alongside the people I love most in the world everyday is a privilege and I don’t ever want to take them or the opportunity I have been given for granted!’

Of course I have lived and worked in CQ all my life and have witnessed the changes unfolding in towns such as Emerald over more years than I care to admit, the good and the bad. The strength of this region never ceases to amaze me. Through droughts, floods and even the current Labor government, towns like Emerald have remained stoic, providing a great place to live no matter who you are. Emerald is a town that I hold close to my heart, having operated a fuel distributorship here for many years. It is a town pitched against a backdrop of great diversity through its deep and long standing connections to agriculture and now with the ever growing presence of the resources sector. Many people see places like Emerald as having been adversely affected by the mining boom, and while this has certainly posed its challenges, the benefits of being a part of such a supportive and family- orientated community shine through as much now as they ever have. With so much happening around the region, I would love to see more FIFO and DIDO workers consider Emerald and surrounding communities as places to set up camp on a more permanent basis. Our rural and regional communities offer great hospitality and are ideal places to raise a family, with a thriving sporting and community culture. All things considered, you would go a long way to find a better community than what exists out here. The Central Highlands is a place that’s very close to the heart of the Coalition. We are adamant that the people that live and work here don’t need the Government needlessly dipping even deeper into their pockets through misleading policies like the Carbon Tax. We firmly believe that a Government should live within its means and give people every opportunity to succeed and prosper without the burden of over regulation and over taxation. The fact is that CQ doesn’t just have to be a place where big money is made to sustain a life back in the shackles of suburbia. Places like Emerald are really just a stone’s throw from some of the most pristine reefs in the world, situated neatly between the expansive wonders of the west and the diverse beauty of the Central Queensland coastline. The Coalition is wholeheartedly committed to the growth and prosperity of rural and regional communities. We believe that such communities are the backbone of our nation which is why I’m fighting for the establishment of programs like Royalties to Regions to ensure that we are not forgotten out here beyond the city limits of the ‘big smoke’. I’m proud and privileged to represent Flynn and will always stand by our region as one of the most liveable places on earth.

After countless requests from some of our major clients and readers to expand CORE Magazine into Emerald and Blackwater, I recently decided it was time to find out what all the talk was about. Jess and I jumped in my car and set out on a trip to find out why there was so much interest in what I assumed was simply another small country town that was built to service the mining industry, and a base for miners and their families. Our publication has been home delivered into most Bowen Basin towns, including Collinsville, Moranbah and Dysart, since the magazine began in September 2011, being well received by those who reside there. For anyone on their first drive through the Bowen Basin, on the long straight roads surrounded by nothing but endless bush and countryside, I am sure the same thoughts crossed your minds, as they did mine. What will I find at the end of this road? Who lives out here in the middle of nowhere? Am I going to run out of fuel before I reach the next servo? I clearly remember on a previous trip, it was suggested I take the cattle road from Dysart back to Moranbah, as it was a much quicker route. This would have to be one of the most eye opening adventures I had ever done. This road trip will be one I never forget, and my personal journey, too long and detailed to include in this editorial. I can say that I don’t remember ever laughing so much in my life. With our company Sales Manager as my passenger and navigator, we found ourselves on this

rolling road that never seemed to end. What captivated me the most was the beauty of the countryside. It was just on dusk with the light in the sky highlighting the landscape, it was simply breath taking. The movie Wolf Creek ran rampant in my thoughts, but it felt like all the passing vehicles somehow knew that the little blue CORE car was undertaking its maiden journey. Every passing vehicle and truck offered a wave of encouragement, and I won’t lie, the amusement on their faces was clearly noticeable. You could see their thoughts, what the hell are they doing out here? I quickly realised that anyone passing would be happy to lend a helping hand if required, and our journey went from unwarranted fear to constant laughter. It’s the people that make a town or region what it is. You can be in the middle of nowhere and find someone who is willing to go out of his or her way to help you. This is what I love about small country towns and the Bowen Basin was no exception. Being a wife whose husband works a five on five off shift in the Bowen Basin, I would have to say that I discovered a newfound respect for what they do. No matter what company you work for, and regardless of your title, it felt to me like I was entering a brotherhood of some sort. This had no reflection on your gender, or if you knew the person beside you or driving in front of you, but a general respect for each other, an unspoken

two or three days to take in everything it has to offer, and book your accommodation in advance. I would like to make special mention of Ken O’Dowd MP, the Federal Member for Flynn, and his amazing staff, especially Lane Buffington, who made us feel so welcome. It is refreshing to walk into a local Federal Electorate office whose passion for the community and region shines through in their much-appreciated helpfulness.

Passing through Moranbah on our way to Clermont, we were now in unchartered territory. I wasn’t surprised to find another beautiful sleepy town, which served up one of the best coffees and sausage rolls I had ever tasted. Onward to Emerald, we passed through another amazing township, Capella. We stopped here to drop off our latest issue to the local bottle shop. A local miner, who worked for Spartan Mining, approached us. He asked me if he was able to subscribe to the publication, as he loved reading them every month but his mates always stole them from him, and he wanted to make sure he got his copy. I was blown away to find another passionate CORE reader based in a town where we had never been. I knew then that I had to expand the publication, and this encounter made me even more excited to reach Emerald. I wondered if they would know us there?

After only a short journey from Capella to Emerald, I was taken aback by the size and infrastructure that surrounded me. Out of nowhere we had stumbled across a mini city! With three shopping centres and a cinema, I felt like I was only just outside a major city, and not in the Central Highlands. I finally understood why we needed to be here. I made a call back to the office in Mackay and explained why I would need a week or more to visit all the businesses in Emerald, and not the day or two we had originally planned. Although we had discovered a mini city, the feel of this town and the people who lived here still had the same small country town qualities. Everyone we encountered was both extremely helpful and excited about our publication becoming a part of their community. We had planned our trip to Emerald as the town was coming alive in preparation for the annual AG Grow, QMIX and Gem Festival. Curious, we decided to make the short journey from Emerald to Rubyvale, which is the centre of the annual Gem Festival. Driving into Rubyvale felt like I was going back in time 100 years. This adorable town was made up of gem miners and traders. As we pulled up alongside the local pub, I thought to myself, why hadn’t I ever heard about this place? In the 10 years that I have lived in one of the surrounding regions, why was I only discovering this amazing township now? Walking into what was a new but old style pub, based on its décor and warm atmosphere, I was delighted to find an open log wood fire surrounded by families enjoying the warmth from the mid winter evening air. We settled in at the bar and ordered our first glass of red wine. It wasn’t long before we were deep in conversation with the locals who had lived in this quaint little township for many years. In one evening we knew all about the town and the families who first settled here. I only wished that my family were with me to experience it. I would surely be back. If you were to ask me if Emerald was a mining town, my answer would be yes and no. What township in the Bowen Basin or Central Highlands isn’t a mining town? What I discovered is that there is so much more to this mini city than mining. If mining ceased to exist tomorrow, then Emerald would continue to grow and prosper. There is nothing more I can put in words, but simply to say get in your car with your family and experience it for yourself. It is only a day trip from Mackay, but I would recommend

Whilst in town I dropped by the local HOTFM studio to catch up with Shawn Michelmore. This born and bred Emerald local, has a reputation for being “the young and hot” General Manager, of Emerald and the Central Highland’s most popular radio station. I was told that he would be more than willing to be involved in a series of stories showcasing the local people in the magazine. My sources were also happy to offer me an inside scoop, that Mr. Shawn Michelmore would be the great Mayor of Emerald one day, but that there was only one foreseeable problem, he doesn’t want to be! The Michelmore family has lived in Emerald for Shawn’s entire life. He and his sister Angela were born in the local hospital. Angela who is now married with two beautiful boys, Coby and Kye, has since relocated to Brisbane. Mum Cheryl, working at Harvey World Travel and Dad Stewart still working in the mines after almost 30 years, Emerald is and always will be home to the Michelmores.

“Although the Central Highlands is a much smaller market compared with other stations within the company, I find my role more diverse and interesting. With my only employee Jenni at my side, we don’t just look after the sales. We are the promotional crew and the on air personalities when required. Ensuring that we always have the community interests as a whole forefront in our minds, it is important for me to take part in many local community groups, including the PCYC and Multicultural Festival committee, to name just a few.”

After working in the industry for only a short time, Shawn realised that, photography wasn’t for him. “Overtime, I slowly started to lose interest and after a while I knew that this wasn’t what I wanted to do anymore.”

During high school, Shawn’s passion was to become a photographer. He landed a job with a local photo shop and even signed up with Tafe, to study photography after high school.

Shawn spent a period of time working in retail as an Assistant Manager, but within a year of job offers in radio, this outgoing people person was finally poached into the radio industry in 2004. “When I first started in radio, I would get so excited when I would hear my client’s commercials. Knowing I was a part of making it happen is the reason I am still here today. My mates would always get annoyed with me turning up the radio in the car so I can hear the commercials. It’s funny, because I still do this today! Since taking the jump into radio, I have honestly never looked back.” After 4 years of working as a Sales Executive for the company, Shawn was contracted to move into the General Management position at the age of 26.

• For the time being Shawn is content to remain in Emerald surrounded by friends and family. “Outside of work, I love spending time with my mates, and I still get my fix in retail by working some weekends for Havik, a local retail clothing store. My hobbies include touch football and going to the gym.” Shawn is a true movie junkie and if he isn’t at the cinema catching that latest flick, you would be sure to find him at home relaxing on the couch watching an old classic. Knowing that he is part of a national company with a network of stations throughout Australia that can offer him a new job in a new location anytime he is ready, is a great comfort. But for now this true local personality is content to remain exactly where he is.

To look at Dan Englund, a 38-year-old local from Emerald, you would have to say he’d be one of the fittest blokes this side of the hill. But you’d be shocked to discover that in May last year, Dan suffered a life threatening ischemic stroke at home while getting ready for a routine day at work. “One in six Australians will have a stroke before they die, being roughly one every ten minutes. The kicker is that most don’t even realise that they are having a stroke and in this situation, every minute counts.” “I was getting ready for work and started hearing an odd humming in my left ear then shortly after started to feel a little dizzy but I didn’t think too much of it and was too busy to lie down. I went to check some emails then my hand started to curl up and then dropped like a dead weight on my lap, but still then I just thought it was odd until I tried to stand up and my left leg wouldn’t move, that’s when I realised that something was really wrong.” “Stroke is so preventable, most people have the attitude that it’s just not going to happen to them. We’re all about trying to change that. We want to encourage people to know what a stroke is, how to prevent it and if it has happened, encourage them to get better.” On August 4th, Dan will be lacing up his joggers and hitting the road Terry Fox style, running from Emerald to Brisbane to raise money and awareness for this somewhat taboo illness. “Having lived through a stroke and just finished my physiotherapy, I now know how lucky I am. Part of what I want to do is spread the word to all the survivors that if you do your Physiotherapy and continue to fight the disabilities, then you will get better.” “Running has always been such a passion of mine, it was one of my main concerns when this happened to me. I keep thinking ‘will I ever be able to run again’ and the fear of not running was greater than the fear of what might happen if I actually did try.” “At the same trip that I was at Wesley hospital where my Doctor gave me the news I was cured, I went to visit Bear Grylls who after breaking his back went on to climb Everest and do all the amazing things he can do now. He was an inspiration for recovery and great achievements.” “The first run I did since my stroke was painful and dysfunctional. I had back pain but I just keep thinking that I just had to keep running as it would eventually get better, which through all the physio it eventually did.” “After a few months of increasing my runs, I thought that if I could ever run properly again, I’m going to do it to raise awareness of Strokes.” Stroke is Australia’s second single greatest killer after coronary heart disease and is a leading cause of disability. Running almost 1000kms representing the life-saving journey to the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, he will be ending his pilgrimage on September 10th, signalling the start of Stroke Awareness Week. “My wife Tania has done so much to organise and co-ordinate this event. What’s the greatest perk of owning a bike store? – “I’m not sure but it’s kind of like the guy who loves to eat chocolate buying a chocolate factory.” Well that is how ROSS DRAYTON, the owner of Central Bike Centre from Emerald described it when CORE Magazine caught up with him this month. Prior to buying Central Bikes in February 2010, Ross spent 10 years in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He spent the first 5 years working for the Abu Dhabi Government, and the last 5 years running a Fast Build System Construction Company, before returning to Australia in late 2009. Growing up with an interest in motorcycles, he always owned and rode bikes, so it makes perfect sense that Ross would buy a motorcycle store. From the moment you first speak to him, you’ll understand why there isn’t a better fit, and to say Ross is passionate about motorcycles would have to be the understatement of the century. Ross explains the best part of his job is that he gets to spend his days speaking with people about his greatest passion and as the old saying goes, “Find a job you love and you’ll never have to work another day in your life”. Ross goes on to explain that everything at Central Bikes is a team effort and he couldn’t praise his team any higher – “We have a great team here, they all love motorcycles and riding, that’s what makes it so good. It takes it away from being just a retail outlet to a team of people who simply love what they do.” But don’t just take my word for it, drop in to Central Bikes in Emerald, grab a coffee from the coffee lounge, have a look around and see for yourself why Ross has the best team of bike enthusiasts. So what does Ross ride you ask, well I’m glad you did. It’s a fully customised 2010 Harley Davidson Road King. “A Harley?”, I can hear you say. “What is the owner of a metric bike store who sells Yamaha, 66 • www.coremag.com.au

Kawasaki and Suzuki, doing riding a Harley?” Well that leads me to the next part of what’s on the table with Ross - T Bar Custom Cycles. As a result of the amount of custom work they have been taking on, Ross has decided to start T Bar Custom Cycles to allow them to also focus more of the custom side of the business. While Central Bikes isn’t a Harley Davidson dealer, T Bar Customs will be focusing on modifying both Harleys as well as your other V-Twins. This includs the metric version such as the Yamaha V-Star 650, which Ross explains is the number one selling cruiser in Australia currently, possibly because it is LAMS approved. As always when I interview people about cars, bikes and modifying them, I tend to get a little side-tracked and speaking to Ross about T Bar Custom Cycles was no exception, I found myself speaking about Bobbers (If you don’t know what a Bobber is, do yourself a favour and Google it. Maybe if the boss lets me, I’ll give you run down on them in a coming edition) and options for a build that I’m looking at. With customising taking off in Australia and overseas, it stands to reason that the parts are becoming more and more available with plenty of online and overseas stores offering kits and custom parts. Ross explains that often a lot of the customising they were doing originally was for customers with kits and parts they had ordered from overseas having a few parts that aren’t legal

in Australia, and that is where having a local custom shop comes in very handy. When asked what his dream bike would be, Ross replied – “Anything as long as it’s a Harley (laughing), no probably a new Harley Davidson Street Glide Custom” (fully customised of course by T Bar Custom Cycles). Now Ross has been a big part of getting an Enduro track up and running in Emerald and with the help of a few other very dedicated individuals they are very close to this being a reality. The track is just waiting on approval from the National Motorcycle Council. But the track won’t just be used for Enduro racing as it’s targeted as a family facility giving locals somewhere safe to ride and learn. Also it is expected to be utilised for rider training and possibly ATV training with the approval of the management committee, so we will be sure you keep you abreast of this as it passes through approval. With Central Bikes trading 6 days, and with the little time he has spare, Ross loves to get out for a ride whenever he can. It’s safe to say that he lives and breathes motorcycles, and for anyone who rides you’ll understand that if motorcycles is all you get to do with your life, it wouldn’t be a life wasted. So what is next for Ross and Central Bikes? Well the T Bar Custom Cycles coming together in the next few months, which will allow them to focus their skills and knowledge on customising. T Bar Customs is working closely with Wildcard Customs, who are the Australian distributor for Big Bear Choppers. Ross says there are some really big plans afoot with that, but he can’t go into detail at this stage, so it’s definitely a ‘watch this space’ situation. There are also a few new launches coming soon that both 2 and 4 wheel enthusiasts out there will love. In finishing Ross wanted to thank his team, and reiterate that it’s them that make this all possible. “Everyone works together to achieve the wishes of our customers who are our greatest asset.”

The profile of Australian Basketball is only continuing to grow, and not only the male competition either, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just take my word for it. This month we catch up with RACHEL ALLISON, a 25 year old American Basketball player currently living in Mackay and the Meteorettes Most Valuable Player of 2011.

As with most high profile athletes, Rachel started playing at a young age, in fact when CORE asked when she realised her love for the game, her reply could not have explained it better – “I can’t even remember when it all started. When I was about 10 I remember coming home from my first tryouts crying my eyes out because I thought they were going to kick me out. Ever since then I’ve been playing and loving every minute of it.” Jump forward a few years, Rachel played for Baylor University in Waco, Texas from 2005 to 2009, and she forever left her mark on the school. Upon finishing her university playing career, Rachel was the 9th player in the school’s history to finish more than 1000 points (1126) and more than 800 rebounds (850). Rachel is also ranked in the Baylor’s University all-time top ten players for free throws, with a total of 295 scored over her 4 years. When asked who her biggest inspiration or idol was growing up, Rachel describes her brother as the player she most looked up to. He is 4 years older than Rachel and she tells of watching him play and explains that they have very similar playing styles – “dive on the floor and don’t give up”. After finishing up with Baylor University, Rachel made the very difficult choice of packing up her life to come to Australia to continue her Basketball career, and luckily for us she ended up signing with the Mackay Global Product Search Meteorettes. Rachel explains the hardest part about the move is the time difference – “not being able call my family if I have a bad game or quickly fly home for the weekend. It’s an exciting thing to be able to do though.”

The fact that Mackay reminds Rachel a lot of her home town Arkansas also has helped a lot with the adjustment in moving half way across the world. She goes on to describe that it’s not a big city which might have been a little overwhelming, that and the people are really nice too, which always makes a big difference. The 2011 season saw Rachel not only playing for our very own Mackay Global Product Search Meteorettes, but also going on to pick up the Most Valuable Player award. Rachel lead the Metteorettes in both scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game, as well as in rebounds with an average of 10.2 rebounds per game, over the 17 games she played to claim her first ever club Most Valuable Player award. Rachel took a little time to run us through her regular training schedule – “Well I have training every Tuesday and Thursday. Training or not, I shoot every day. I also train with the coach 2-3 times a week, and do weights at City Fitness two or three days a week. It’s pretty intense!” Rachel is best described in her own words as – I’m pretty athletic, so if I’m active, I’m happy. So when she’s not training, Rachel enjoys being outdoors, everything from going to the beach, walking her dog and fishing, when our weather lives up to its reputation. When asked what advice she would offer kids wanting to follow in her footsteps, and follow their dreams of playing sports professionally, Rachel offers a somewhat refreshing truth, that hard work goes a long way. Even for those who don’t have the best skills, hard work will get you to where you want to be. It’s that never give up attitude that makes Rachel the player she is today and what earned her the MVP award for the 2011 season with Mackay Global Product Search Meteorettes. So last but not least we want to know, what is next for Rachel Allison? – “Well that’s the million dollar question. I’ll keep doing my thing as long as I can” (laughs). Well one thing is for sure, we will be sure to keep an eye on Rachel as she continues doing her thing. We will try and catch up with her again to see how it is all going. Issue 12 • 2012 • 73

Metabolisms – every living organism has one, but humans are the only ones who sit around and blame it for our problems with weight gain. Put simply, it’s the process that gives us energy from fuel. My base metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy I need to sustain my bodily processes if I did absolutely nothing all day but the bare essentials of eating, digesting and thinking. What’s the secret to having a perfect metabolism to maintain a perfect shape? Make it faster!

Move more. It’s that simple. Walk, fidget, run, cycle, skip, anything! – just move as much as you can to burn calories in every little way.

Do strength training. Muscle burns nearly all the energy in your body. More muscle = more energy required.

An extra kilo of muscle adds more than 100 calories to your metabolic rate every single day AT REST!! So if you move more (step 1), with more muscle, it gets multiplied!

Eat small nutritious meals throughout the day. Keeping your body fuelled with just enough energy, plus protein and nutrients at regular intervals all day will keep your muscles, organs, and brain running in top gear. This will burn more calories and keep you productive. You will also tend to eat less overall.

WITH THE BEST BODY AND ATTITUDE As we peel away the layers of clothing, we might ask “Where did those extra kilos come from?” This can be enough to motivate us to start exercising, but how do we keep up the momentum? Rather than reviewing all those depressing stats on failure rates, lets look at how we can sustain the effort and NOT become another statistic. It’s now widely accepted that regular exercise is essential for wellbeing. So first, find an activity that you ENJOY. Going along to support a friend is commendable, but if you’re not enjoying the effort it won’t last. Having a strong mindset is so important. The “JUST DO IT” slogan suggests we get out there and do it. Don’t think it through; chances are you will talk yourself out of it.

The easiest way to keep things going is simply not to stop.

Woody Allen once said that, “Half of life is showing up.” I’d argue that 90% of making a habit is just making the effort to get there.

Make a commitment to go every day (even just for 20 minutes) for one month. This will solidify the exercise habit and take some of the pressure off!

There are thousands of ways you can move your body and exercise, so don’t limit yourself to lifting weights or doing crunches if it’s not interesting for you.

Don’t put exercise time in a place where it will easily be pushed aside by something more important. Right after work or first thing in the morning are often good places to put it.

With the warmer days fast approaching, our thoughts start returning to our summer body.

We need to pull the power of a News Year’s resolution into each day! Put a goal in place – to be lighter, fitter and stronger by a certain time. Without a goal, without a reason to get going, we forget why we started in the first place. Join a group or a club with common interests. Trying to run 5km your first workout isn’t a good way to build a habit. Work below your capacity for the first few weeks to build the habit. Otherwise you might scare yourself off after a brutal workout.

Platform: PS3, X360 / Genre: Action / Rating: MA15+ Lollipop Chainsaw is what you get when developer Suda51 and horror filmmaker James Gunn (who is not new to the zombie genre, having penned the screenplay for Dawn of the Dead) join forces. Featuring Juliet Starling, a zombie hunting cheerleader fighting off hordes of zombies who have invaded her hometown. This is one of those games where you either love it or hate it... and I love it. With her boyfriend Nick’s head firmly attached to her belt (don’t worry, he’s still alive – it’s a long story) she chainsaws her way through the undead that have overrun her school on her way to meet her tutor, Morikawa. Who reveals that the Universe is divided into three realms: Earth, the Land Beyond Words, and the Rotten World, an infernal realm where demons and zombies reside. It turns out someone has cracked open a portal between Earth and the Rotten World by a combination of black magic and explosives and five rock styled demon zombies (yes, it’s a thing) demons have descended on the world. The gameplay is pretty average, to be honest. The combat evolves as you play, starting off with a small number of combos and skills that increase as you go along. It does get to a point once you have learnt all of the combos you can simply button-mash your way to the end. You can purchase upgrades, music and skills in “shops” along the way. So if the story is nothing new, and the combat is average, what are the highlights? Well, for one, the incredibly funny banter between Juliet and Nick’s severed head – who is as baffled as the audience as to what is going on here. Watching the dynamics between poor Nick and his kick-ass girlfriend is a delight to the sick minded, such as myself. The soundtrack is killer (haha get it? Killer? Never mind) featuring Skrillex, Joan Jett and Children of Bodom. Plus these zombies aren’t just your average mindless stumbling corpses. They have weapons, they crawl after you if you cut off their legs and they talk back. Plus, they’re filled with sparkles and rainbows. SPARKLES AND RAINBOWS, PEOPLE!

One of the obvious things about Lollipop Chainsaw is that it is completely over the top. On the surface it seems like your typical “sexist eye candy made-for-teenageboys” Japanese title. From the opening shower scene to the constant requests from Juilet to please “don’t look up my skirt”, to the sexist insults thrown at her by her zombie exclassmates, it would be easy to take it at face level. Look a little deeper and you’ll find a very clever dig at those more subtly sexy games that insult the intelligence of gamers in general, regardless of gender. I’ve played almost every zombie game out there, and Lollipop Chainsaw despite it’s flaws HAS given me something to enjoy. I’m not saying it’s is perfect, in fact it’s far from it and definitely is an acquired taste, but it’s worth a play.
