Q
How did you all come together to make the epic sounds of Prometheus?
We’ve all known each other A for a long time, and have been in bands together at some stage, so coming together to form our own band was always bound to happen. You list your inspirations Q as Metallica, Opeth, Megadeath and Nightwish to name a few. Would you say that your original music reflects your musical influences? A
Very much so!
a great feeling. Congratulations on your Q recent victory with Battle of the Bands at the Grove! That must have been an awesome chance to show what you can do. A It was definitely a surprise that we won! We didn’t think we’d make it through the first round of heats. It wasn’t until we got to the finals, that we thought, “Holy sh*t, we can actually win this – we’d better pull our finger out!”. Q With such a wide variety of gigs already happening for you guys, are you planning on putting an album together?
You have quite a heavy Q music style. What makes you want to perform heavy metal?
A One goal of ours is definitely to release an EP. We’re aiming for the end of the year – stay tuned!
For me, it’s the creativity of it. A Being able to play something that the audience responds to – it’s
Q What can we expect from Prometheus in the next year or so? A Gigs [laughs] and hopefully an EP! We just want to get our name out there and have people enjoy our music.
Q
Where can we go to hear your tunes?
1. Hometown: Mackay 2. Drink of choice: Red Label Smirnoff 3. Who you cheer for: Broncos 4. Favourite song: You know my name, Chris Cornell 5. Favourite thing to cook: Nachos 6. Last thing you stole: A pen from work…
One of the hottest bands in the region at the moment, the 5-piece original heavy metal band, Prometheus has been rocking out all over Mackay. CORE Magazine caught up with Phil from local band Prometheus for a quick chat…
10 • www.coremag.com.au
7. Most incredible experience: Seeing Metallica live in Brisbane 8. Most famous person you’ve ever met: The wrestler, Booker T 9. Biggest achievement: Winning Battle of the Bands! 10. Biggest vice: Gossip Girl…No, wait – Survivor… That’s more manly!
Kat (vocals), Phil (guitar), Dane (lead Guitar), Glen (Drum), Tim (Bass)
A We don’t really have any permanent spots yet, but we’re around. A few of the pubs are trying to bring back Metal Nights at CBD Hotel, so I daresay we’ll be regulars if it all comes together.
If you’re a local die-hard fan for classic pub tunes, then it’s likely you’ve heard of these guys. Mackay born Brad Geiger on lead vocals, guitarist Johnny Tyler, Michael Shanks on Bass (Shanksy as he’s affectionately known) and Michael Walsh on drums who together, make up the band Chasing the Jeffrey - these guys know how to play good Aussie Rock! If you haven’t heard of them yet, then get listening. With influences such as Cold Chisel, the Screaming Jets and Diesel these guys produce clean solid tunes that re-play over and over again in your mind and leave you wanting more.
Q
So “Chasing the Jeffrey”... Explain?
We watched a movie where A they had a modern pop culture reference to the Über drug called a Jeffrey. We thought that was pretty funny and we look at our music as being our drug of choice and always needing to take in the ultimate song. You’ve done a lot of Q traveling and international pursuits, you’ve been in bands such as Brotherz in Armz, Sons of Beaches and Offshore, what was your vision for Chasing the Jeffrey? Originally when I first started A it was really just lets make it happen, I had a bit of experience with the other bands, and i’ve worked out what works and what doesn’t. I really wanted to push this to a professional level and achieve a high caliber of professionalism. My vision was to get us released Australia wide as quick as possible. It has taken us two years but we got there. We’ve recently 12 • www.coremag.com.au
scored a publishing deal so the vision that I had for the band has really fallen into place now and we’re setting our sights again to get an Australian tour happening.
one night to throw it on for a show and everyone loved it and I don’t think he’s done a show without it since. The purple makes it a bit more comical if you like.
With a culture in your band Q for hard work, what kind of sacrifices have you had to make to get where you are today?
You guys have a goal Q to play in every pub around Australia – hows it going?
Myself and JT have basically A worked the last two years with no pay, being no regular income from the band, we were doing four nights a week and we banked everything we earned to realise our vision. We’ve rarely had a weekend off in the last two to three years, it’s a real treat to get a Saturday night off. You miss out on a lot of things like birthdays and weddings because you’re always working weekends. You guys seem to have Q a lot of fun on stage, JT has phenomenal guitar acrobatics, but can you explain Shankys purple Kilt? (laughs) His family is Scottish, A he’s really proud of his heritage and he did it as a gimmick
(laughs) Its actually going A pretty well! We’ve had that goal as a long term business venture, you’d be pushing it with every pub, but we generally only play pubs at the moment. We’ve played at every pub in Mackay and the mining region, now we’re heading south as far down as Moama and popping into every pub we can find and do a bit of a show for them then heading out to long reach and go again. Last year we did about 80 different pubs. Whats it like for you Q playing back in your home town Mackay? Its pretty cool, when I first A came back from Europe it was such a good feeling to be playing in front of your home crowd, and after awhile, because
of the local following, you get really good support and that helps get our feet off the ground. You had your first album Q released in February, can you tell us a little about it? We love Australia. Australians A just got our band right off the bat. They were really excited about what we were doing. In America, people are pumped, but in Australia, it seems like people are almost frantically excited, which is awesome. So what do we have to look Q out for over the next few years from CTJ? We’re going on an Australian A tour in May, we’re going down the east coast to do all the major towns, it will be about thirty shows heading all the way down as far as Launceston in Hobart, and then coming back to the mainland to head across to Adelaide and possibly Perth on the same trip. Ultimately, I would like to tap into my old fan base and eventually head over to tour Europe.

Got leftovers in the fridge and not sure what to make with them? Well try our 15-minute fast and easy Crostini recipe that hits the spot and makes more room in the fridge for your beer. INGREDIENTS 1 cup cheese 1 french-stick, cut into slices 3 rounds salami or cooked bacon 6 assorted olives (pips removed) 4 sundried tomatoes
1
. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Arrange the bread on a baking tray. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil onto each one. Put into the oven for 5 to 10 minutes to crisp up, while you investigate the fridge for some toppings. Basically, the toppings are cheese-and-something, but feel free to use different cheeses: Brie, Camembert, or strong Cheddar - almost anything will do!
2
. Add with the cheese, something spicy or tangy – Pieces of anchovy fillets, slivers of salami or bacon, capers, lemon pieces (with the rind cut off), sun-dried tomatoes or olives sliced in half. Try smearing the toasts with bottled chilli sauce, pesto or tapanade before adding the cheese. Go wild!
3
. Pull the crispy bread out of the oven and arrange the toppings. They’ll need to go back into the oven for just a few minutes, until all the cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
HOT TIP:
Meet Dan Farr, the resident flair bartender at Cactus Jacks Airlie Beach. CORE caught up with Dan for a quick chat about how he got into it, how long he’s been at it and the many, many comps he’s competed in.
Q
How did you get into flairing?
using a high quality gin and fresh produce!
I started bartending when I A was 17 years old and was getting pretty bored, so I started mixing it up, throwing ice and different equipment around. A group of us went to watch the National Bar Flair Bartending Championships, and the guys competing just blew me away. I said to myself, I want to be like these guys, so I started training the very next day, and have been at it for 8 years now.
Q
What’s your favourite cocktail to make?
That’s easy, it’s a Martini! A There are so many variations and methods in making them, it is often a challenge to get it right. However you cant go wrong
Q
Have you won any competitions?
I have won many, and I am A currently ranked as the number 1 flair bartender in Australia and New Zealand. I have just competed in Vietnam where I came 6th out of 20 in the Asia Pacific International Championships, where all competitors were their own country’s champions. I won my first Australian Championship in 2005, and represented Oz over in South America where I won the Central and South American Championship. In between these years I was placing in the top three in Oz. Its hard work but the travel, good times and people you meet are worth the training.
Try making three different kinds, with whatever you can find in the fridge (yes, leftovers!), this is an easy one for you boys, basically anything will work.
INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2oz gin 1/2oz dry vermouth 1 green olive or lemon twist for garnish Orange or Angostura bitters (optional) PREPARATION: 1. Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice cubes 2. Stir for 30 seconds 3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass 4. Add a dash of orange or Angostura bitters if desired 5. Garnish with the olive or lemon twist

A speciality beer brewed over lees in winter using the first malt and hops from the last harvest. Roasted malts give it its characteristic amber hue.
A stunningly exciting stout brewed with double strength coffee beans delivering the buzz of coffee and a subtle toasted oatmeal flavour.
Obtained by top fermentation, the “Biere Nouvelle” is characterised by fruity flavours and a good bite. Biere Nouvelle must be served with care (leaving behind the fine yeast sediment) at about 10°C.
Pale, chocolate, crystal and wheat/oat malts give a real depth of colour and flavour then First Gold, Hallertau and Smargo Hops along with real coffee are added to deliver some bitterness and that fabulous coffee taste.
Golden, very low carbonation, pale lager with a whole chilli pepper in the bottle.
A full strength Pale Ale with a distinctive copper-colour. Using only 4 natural ingredients – water, yeast, hops and barley - with no additives or preservatives.
Great beer for lovers of chilli! Something different – you have to give it a go at least once!
A traditional ale yeast strain is added, producing fruity esters, whilst three distinct hop gifts impart soft bitterness as well as a dominant floral hop character.

Ever seen something on a plate in front of you and thought “WTF is that??” You’ve got nothing compared to what CORE came across in a humble Google search. Prepare to lose your appetite as you read on...
WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Fugu is the Japanese word for the poisonous puffer fish, filled with enough of the poison tetrodotoxin to be lethal. Only speciallytrained chefs, who undergo two to three years of training and have passed an official test, can prepare the fish. WAIT, IT GETS WORSE...
WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Casu Marzu is a sheep milk cheese that has been deliberately infested by a Piophila casei, the “cheese fly.” The result is a maggot-ridden, weeping stink bomb in an advanced state of decomposition. Its translucent larvae are able to jump about 6 inches into the air, making this the only cheese that requires eye protection while eating. The taste is strong enough to burn the tongue, and the larvae themselves pass through the stomach undigested, sometimes surviving long enough to breed in the intestine, where they attempt to bore through the walls, causing vomiting and bloody diarrhea. WAIT, IT GETS WORSE... This cheese is a delicacy in Sardinia, where it is illegal. That’ right. It is illegal in the only place where people actually want to eat it. If this does not communicate a very clear message, perhaps the larvae will, as they leap desperately toward your face in an effort to escape the putrescent horror of the only home they have ever known. Even the cheese itself is ashamed.
Some chefs will choose to leave a minute amount of poison in the fish to cause a tingling sensation on the tongue and lips as fugu can be quite bland. Perhaps the fuss of fugu is more in surviving the experience than the actual taste of the deadly fish.
WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Of all the dishes, this is the one most likely to be mistaken for a threatening message from the mob. It’ a sheeps head, boiled. WAIT, IT GETS WORSE... Pacha only reveals its terror gradually. Sure, maybe you can get around the fact that you’re eating face. But, the more you eat it, the more bone is revealed, until you give a final burp and set your cutlery down beside a grinning ivory skull. Its hollow eye sockets stare back at you with a look of grim damnation. “Burp while ye may,” the sockets say, “for the same fate will happen to you--and all too soon.”
WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Behold, for our journey of horror reaches its destination. Balut are duck eggs that have been incubated until the fetus is all feathery and beaky, and then boiled alive. The bones give the eggs a uniquely crunchy texture. They are enjoyed in Cambodia, Philippines and the fifth and seventh levels of hell. They are typically sold by street vendors, at night, out of buckets of warm sand. You can spot the vendors because of their glowing red eyes, and the faint, otherworldly sound of children screaming.
WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Escamoles are the eggs of the giant black Liometopum ant, which makes its home in the root systems of maguey and agave plants. Collecting the eggs is a uniquely unpleasant job, since the ants are highly venomous and have some kind of blood grudge against human orifices. The eggs have the consistency of cottage cheese. The most popular way to eat them is in a taco with guacamole.
WAIT, IT GETS WORSE...
WAIT, IT GETS WORSE...
Because you’re never going to look at an egg the same way. Tell yourself that every time you crack open an egg from now on you won’t be half expecting a leathery wad of bird to come flopping out into the skillet.
Escamoles have a surprisingly pleasant taste: buttery and slightly nutty. This hugely increases the chances that, while in Mexico, you could eat them without realizing you are eating a taco full of ant eggs.
Yes, balut is upsetting on about a half-dozen levels. Sure, all meat eaters know on some level that the delicious chop on your plate used to belong to something cute and fluffy, which gambolled in the sun during the brief spring of its life. Most of the time, it’ perfectly possible not to give a sh*t. But, when you’re biting into something that hasn’t even had a chance to see its mother’ face ... well, it’ different. 22 • www.coremag.com.au

Being a Mackay local, you would naturally expect that he would have some degree of enthusiasm when it comes to fishing, and most likely own a boat of some sort. But would you expect that he had also smashed the record at the Daiwa Lake Awoonga BARRA Night Championships and has also been crowned twice at the World Sooty Championships? Well cadet fitter and turner Daniel Grech has - and if that hasn’t got the avid fisherman gaping, this experienced champion angler is only 23 years old. Daniel first started recreational fishing when he was 10 years of age, finding he had a knack for the sport, and loving the chase, he moved to competitive fishing when he was 19 years, old in 2008. That year he competed at the World Sooty Competition held at the Eungella Dam where he received his first crown with 1709 points. He was able to nab second place in 2009. Not to be defeated, this competitive fisherman competed again in 2010 and regained his title as champion with a 6/6, 2519cm limit handing him the crown.

Since then, he’s achieved a consistent top 10 result in almost all fishing tournaments he’s participated in, which have a playing field of competitors anywhere between forty and a hundred. So how does a 23 year old champion angler gain so much skill and knowledge in a sport which calls for product, place and provision know-how? “I’m basically self-taught, you’ve got to spend a lot of time on the water. Over the last five or six years I’ve spent hundreds of hours on the water... I normally go out two to three times a week and spend anywhere from five to six hours at the dam each time. On my time off, fishing is basically the only thing I do.” In 2009 Daniel competed at the BARRA Night Championship at Daiwa and thanks to his choice of 12cm and 14cm long Rapala X-Rap lures retro fitted with Decoy wide gape trebles and split rings, he was able to boast a 5/5 583cm tournament limit catch winning him the championship. His ingenuity and successful fishing techniques has earned him a line-up of sponsors including JT Reel Repairs, Nashy’s Complete Angler, ACM

With this kind of passion and experience, and ranking 4th as Australia’s Best Barra Angler, you can rely on Daniel’s expert tips and advice published every month in North Queensland Fish and Boat and Fishing Monthly Group magazines. But the best advice he gives is the one that got him where he is today, “Research and spending your time on the water, it’s the only way you’re going to get better, it’s like any sport – practice makes perfect.

Fave spot to fish: My favourite spots to fish are the local impoundments around Mackay, such as Kinchant, Teemburra and Eungella Dams. Fave time to fish: I prefer to fish either late afternoon or early morning; this is when the fish are most active. Fave lure: Rapala XRap 12cm Glass Ghost. Fave Fishing rod: Custom Built ‘Jacks Caster’ By ACM Custom Rods Matched with a Daiwa Steez reel. Secret Technique: Spend time getting to know and understand your depth sounder. The technology available in sounders today allows you to target feeding fish and gives you the confidence in areas you are fishing. Also when targeting bigger fish, do not be afraid to downsize your lures. In a feeding session bigger fish will eat twice as many smaller bait fish than the larger bait fish, therefore smaller lures will be eaten twice as often than larger lures.

FISHING
Lake Proserpine (Peter Faust Dam) has gained the reputation as one of Australia’s top Impoundment Barramundi fisheries. The Lake has been stocked with Barramundi since 1996 and to date there has been approx two million Barra fingerlings released into the Lake. With these numbers and the incredibly fast growth rates, many anglers that fish the Lake are rewarded with large Barra, tipping the magic meter mark. With the impoundment Barra fishery evolving all the time there are a lot of different techniques anglers use to get these monster fish on the line. Lure fishing is by far the most popular way to target the Lake Barra. Although the Barra in the lake are the same fish as the wild Barra, the way the fish act and the habitat they feed in, often differ. The areas of the lake to target fish vary a lot depending on the time of the year. Generally casting in the shallows and timbered areas of the lake is the norm, but from about October through to the wet season a lot of the large fish congregate in the deeper areas, in the main basin on the eastern side of the dam. Targeting Barra in 80 to 100 feet of water is very different to anything you would normally do in the wild and it can be hard to get your head around. When the fish are out in this open water they are often in schools and generally fishing for them, as you would for Spanish Mackeral, is the way to go. Trolling hard body lures varying the speed and depth is probably the easiest way to come across the schools of fish. Popular lures for this are the Halco Poltergeist and also larger mackerel style lures like the Halco Laser Pro and Reidy’s Big Boss lures.
Spin or bait-cast combos are great for trolling but it’s a good idea to have a bit of line capacity. I like to have at least 150m of line as I’ve seen reels with less line get emptied pretty quickly on the first run from a big Barra. Jigging Blade style lures and working soft plastics up through the schools also works well. With the Blade lures working them with a fairly aggressive action flicking the rod tip seems to work best. They work well in this deep water as they sink quite fast and actually flutter as they sink, so it’s a good idea to be ready for a bite on the drop. Spin rods work well for this style of fishing as they allow the lure to free-fall with very little resistance - but like I said, be ready for the bite. A standard set up is a 6 to 7 foot, 6-10kg rod with a 3000 or 4000 size reel, 20 to 30lb braid line and a 60 to 80lb leader. This set up works great for the plastics as well but a slow steady retrieve is all you need. There are a lot of
26 • www.coremag.com.au
soft plastics around and many will work in this situation. The standard squidgie slickrigs in the 100mm or 110mm work fine. Just drop them to the bottom and slowly retrieve them up through the schools of Barra. Vary the retrieve speed until you find the speed that seems to work the best. A good sounder also helps in this situation as it makes it a lot easier to locate the schools of fish. On charter I use a Humminbird 998c side imaging sounder. These are fantastic out in the open water as they cover a lot of area and find the schooling fish quickly. Tune in next issue for more info on the side imaging sounder. The fish usually hold in these areas until we have flood rain and then they scatter throughout the lake. During the cooler months, fishing the open basin doesn’t usually work too well, so next issue we will cover the Winter-time tactics.
JOHN CURUSO landed this Diamond trevally, caught at “The Cables” just off Mackay Harbour using soft plastics. The soft plastic was a Berkley Gulp 7 inch in the “Lime Tiger” colour. These are excellent fighting fish which we released after a quick photo.
Warren Borg bought his Chrysler 300c in 2006 as a reliable and stylish family car. Over the past six years, this iconic American Hemi powered yank-tank has morphed into a stylish silver sleek Juggernaut of prowess and power.
This trophy winning machine dons American custom parts from headlight to tailpipe, and has now joins the ranks of the legacy left behind by renowned performance car specialist Trevor Brunker. Although Warren worked the spanners himself, everything was done under the watchful eye of his good friend and mentor, Brunker who sadly passed away earlier this year. “It would never have been what it is today without him, he gave me all the knowledge I needed to build it. He was a bit of a legend around Mackay and Airlie Beach, a lot of car enthusiasts have felt his loss.” And what a car it is, although Warren kept the original 5.7 stock compression motor, it’s now been crowned with an American sourced Pro-Charger and a new custom in take system. With class in mind, a custom cowling was built and airbrushed by local tattoo artist Mick Aplin, to bring the custom parts together and unify the engine bay. “When I build a car, everything has to roll onto everything else. I’m not the type of person that has a car that looks the business but isn’t the business - if it looks fast, it better be fast, if it looks bling, it better be bling.” Did somebody say bling? Rolling on 22” 265 custom rims, this car is bling to say the least. On the inside, you’ll find added chrome and a custom dash. The outside, Halo headlights and rare body spears add to the unique car’s shape along with a custom built fibre-glass over steel hood. Although the current rims add to the cars glamour, Warren is waiting on the arrival of his new custom rims, which are bigger and badder and will require modification to the cars wheel arches to fit. After marvelling at the cars cosmetics and reverberating power, this car also walks the walk, held to the ground through the bends by custom

coil-over suspension held taut with American custom body bracing. These goodies are not just there for the bragging rights, they are required to handle the kind of horse power forced to the wheels by a custom built 3.73:1 differential making it an 11 second silver streak down the quarter mile. With over $160,000 invested so far, as Warren puts it, any car enthusiast knows its all about the building. He is not done yet, always endeavoring to keep his Chrysler unique and above the rest, planning an engine upgrade to push his Horsepower to 1000. But although this may be the pride and joy for any car enthusiast; it is by no means kept in the confines of a stale garage. “This is definitely not a trailer queen or a garage car, we drive it quite regularly from Dysart to Mackay, up to Airlie Beach. It has two baby seats strapped in the back all the time! We take it to the shopping centres and use it like any other car. As far as I’m concerned if it gets stone chips, then that gives me a good excuse to paint it!” This year he’ll be shining up the mags again and entering it in the Chrysler Show, Rockhampton where it will most likely win again “Best Muscle Car”. But keep a look out for this one, as Warren’s ultimate goal will be entering his pride and joy at the infamous Summernats Car Festival, showing it off to the entire country where it will be sure to take out a trophy and make Trevor proud.
Other cars I’ve built, I’m sick of now, I’m “ definitely not sick of this one - I’m still loving it.
”
BIGGEST HURDLES: “Because it’s an American car, all the parts that were sourced are made for left-hand drives, there was a lot of work put in to make parts fit and reworked for a right-hand drive which basically makes everything custom.”
HOW’S THE JAM? “Happy with the colour, I love the silver but it will get another paint job in the future, perhaps some shadowing under the spears... But who knows, whatever’s in vogue when I go to paint it I guess, it may end up purple.”
OTHER RIDES? “I’ve had a passion for cars since I can remember, I bought a little two door BMW once because it was the lightest car that BMW made, with a 1.8 litre motor in it – I stripped that out and put a M3 motor in it, which was one of the fastest motors BMW made, then had to have that engineered. I only had to get rid of it because we were having a family.” “I’ve also had a Toyota MR2 which when it’s first dyno read was done, came out with 25 horse power. After I was done with it and it had its last dyno read, it blew 320 horse power! So as usual I went a little crazy on the performance, but it was good, it used to lift the front wheels off the ground!”
WHY A CHRYSLER? “I don’t have an allegiance to any brand so that for starters offers more options, I just knew it had to be a nice car. At the time when I was in the market for a family car, Holden had just released its new VE, even though I would have been the first to buy one, within a month there would be five thousand driving around and I wanted something a little different – the Chrysler was it. Although there are a lot of people now driving around with Chryslers, there’s no one with a Chrysler like mine.”

Q
Could you tell us a bit about the FMX Championship?
The Australian & Underground FMX A Championships is Australia’s longest running and only FMX competition series in Australia. Thanks to the amazing support of Precise Corporation, we are able to bring the opening round of the series to the motocross crazy fans of Mackay. Growing up in central Qld myself it’s great to be able to give back to the local area by bringing events like this to the fans outside the major cities.
Q
How many years has it been running?
This will be the 6th year we have ran the series. It started in 2007 A when myself and a group of like-minded riders called RFDmx just got fed up with the poor state of FMX competition in this country. We took it upon ourselves to build and develop a series that catered to the riders needs and had an emphasis on fun. It has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 5 years to the point where it is now considered Australia’s premier FMX competition series.
Q
I understand that you and your business partners have kept this event alive yourselves. Why is it so important to be running?
Basically without this competition series, Australia’s FMX riders really A have nothing to strive for outside of Crusty Demons & Nitro Circus demos, both of which are not competitions and do not push riders to progress their riding. We strive to help push Australia’s next generation of top riders, and this series provides the exposure to potential sponsors that these riders would otherwise not get to further their riding career.
Q
So what can the crowd expect from this year’s riders at the PRECISE PRO OPEN?
With some of Australia’s top emerging talent in the field you A can expect to see all the flips and tricks that have made the sport of FMX famous over the last decade. Being a competition and not a choreographed show, you can expect to see the riders lay it all on the line to get their hands on the top prize money.
Q
Most importantly, who are the riders Mackay will see going for the Championship?
At this stage we can confirm last years champion, Rhys Hillier, A and runner up, Joel Brown will both be attending. These riders have stepped up their riding since last year and can be seen in the latest Crusty Demons of Dirt 16 DVD. Also Precise FMX riders and local heroes, the O’Brien brothers, Dan & Jamie, and Nate Kyte, Gyles Staintall will be there to represent Mackay. These young guns really turned heads last year and it will be great to see them up in the mix on their home turf. The 2012 Australian Underground FMX Championships is to be held at the Precise FMX Compound, Mt Jukes on Saturday the 26th May. For those who wish to make it a big day, a courtesy bus will also be available to get you back into town at the end of the day. It’s an all ages family friendly event, so bring your friends and family and ensure you come out to cheer on this spectacular showcase of Freestyle Motocross talent for one day only in Mackay!

Getting an insight into one of Australia’s icons, CORE Magazine catches up with the guy from Mackay to see just how things are for him today. GEOFF HUEGILL has established himself as one
of the World’s best butterfly swimmers and is a fivetime world Champion and an eight-time World Record Holder. This Olympic medalist affectionately known by his country and comrades as “Skippy”, has seen the highlights and lowlights of his career. Being an Australian hero in the early 2000’s, 2008 saw Huegill lose the motivation to keep swimming and declined into a whirlwind of parties and depression, blowing his weight out to an overwhelming 138kgs. Well done on your massive Q comeback, bad luck though missing out on London. Are you still planning on going to the Olympics? Yes. A number of my A sponsors are also sponsors for the games. I’ve got an opportunity to do some work during the games which is going to be great. Has failing the qualifiers for Q London affected your comeback if at all? Not at all - Its been icing A on the cake. When I started my comeback in 2008 I was planning on just getting fit, losing some weight and hopefully swimming for Australia again at the Commonwealth Games. I was able to keep swimming and competing, travelling the world at
the highest level for another 18 months, winning medals at World Championship and World cups. It’s been a dream come true. Your decline was made Q quite public. How did you deal with the scrutiny during your low time? I just tried to keep a low A profile. Had to really assess my life, which direction it was going and most importantly, set new goals to pull myself out of the hole I’d put myself in. Australia almost closed the Q book on the icon that is Geoff Huegill; to everyone’s surprise you’ve reopened it. What kind of struggle was that for you? A
I got to some pretty low points in my life and when

With those days now behind him, Huegill has come back fighting and proven his heroic days are far from over. The Aussie Icon shed an incredible 45kgs to go on and win ten Gold medals in ten months during 2010 which included the Commonwealth Games in Delhi where he beat his personal best and swam faster than when he won bronze in the Sydney Olympics back in 2000. Although missing out on the London Games this year, welcoming a new family into his life may just be the distraction he needs and deserves after a whirlwind decade of ups and downs.
you hit those points you have to reassess everything. Who you are, what you believe in, your values, your direction but most importantly, what you want most out of life. For ages I was always blaming others for the situations I put myself in. Once I started taking responsibility, I went about laying the foundation to living a more meaningful life. What was the defining Q moment when you decided a comeback was in order? I remember watching the A 2008 Olympic trials and thinking to myself that it would be great to swim again at the elite level. I heard some rumours about a new squad being formed in Sydney and I went to NSWIS (NSW Institute of Sport) and put a plan

forward of me wanting to return to the pool. From there I went about executing that plan. Needless to say, you’ve Q made a stellar comeback and your new book “Geoff Huegill - Be Your Best” is diving off the shelves. Can you tell us a little about the book? Putting the book together A was a good opportunity to share my story with the Australian public. It was also an opportunity to share with people the tools and philosophies I used to help me get back on track. What were the best lessons Q you learned on going from hero to zero then back to hero? Appreciation was probably A the most important lesson I learnt. Never giving up was another, life is all about ups and

downs. If you stick to your path and to your beliefs you can achieve anything you put your mind too. How did you go about Q shedding a whopping 45kg off your physique and making the 2010 Commonwealth Games? Creating a road map or setting A goals - what I achieved was not rocket science. I set a realistic goal, worked out how and what was required to achieve that goal then went about doing what was required everyday to get there. Can you describe the high Q you get from winning a gold medal for Australia? Look, it’s one of the best A achievements you can feel but to tell you the truth, for me, it’s an opportunity to appreciate the journey, remember what it took to get there and remember who was there to help me achieve that goal. The gold medal I won was made up of the team that supported me along the way. What was it like making an Q International TV documentary on your life? Interesting... it was pretty A exciting as well. It’s hard to look back on the journey and realise how far I’d actually come. From the
early days when I learnt to swim to moving to Brisbane, having to overcome personal hardships and adversity. I guess that’s life, but to have my life reflected on the screen for everyone to see and understand is a weird feeling.
Q
Tell us about your life in Mackay, any fond memories?
Yeah I have some vague A memories as it was 20 years ago since I lived there. I remember going to school at Victoria Park, my swimming days and also my friends. A lot has changed from when I first grew up but the people are still the same. When you visit Mackay, Q what are the hot spots you like to visit? I just stay at home with mum, A I always go for a drive to see what’s changed but I hardly venture out and about. Life must be pretty full on Q for a professional athlete. What do you like to do in your down time? A
Spend time with my family, it’s what I value most in life.
Congratulations on the birth Q of little Mila, she must be
the cherry on the last few years for you. What’s life like now? Busy!!! I always laugh to A friends of mine who have had babies… I used to discuss fast cars and toys with them, now we talk about formula, nappies and baby things! It’s been the best, challenging, tough but rewarding.
Q
Has she changed any perspectives for you?
Of course, my swimming A and outlook has changed. My direction on life has changed and it’s amazing. Do you have any advice for Q any aspiring swimming athletes out there?
Stick with it, enjoy it but most A importantly, use your sport to help you for life after sport. Everyone will always meet with you once, its what you learn through your sport, respect, teamwork, punctuation etc. that will help you for opportunities for your life after.
Q
So what’s in store for you now?
Good question. In the next A few months I’ll be gearing up for London, I’ve got to work for my sponsor which will be amazing. After that I’m taking my family on a holiday through Europe to meet my wife’s family, which will be fun, then back to Sydney to get right back into work.

Although many of us merely think of the benefits of a large paycheck when the topic of mining jobs comes up, there is much more to life on the Mining Trail than just the dollars. Shiftwork can be demanding on a number of levels when you’re away “over the hill”. Long shift hours under extreme conditions with possible health risks can cause concern amongst some job seekers. The idea of being away from home for a number of days may also be a deterrent if you’re leaving family behind. Spending your time away on a rotating roster demands a high commitment amongst couples and can leave many families with only one parent at a time to keep house. This unconventional lifestyle may put some off the idea but for a lot of couples, the time away from each other actually brings more balance into the home. Jo-anne Rae is a mother and miner’s wife and finds the mining lifestyle ideal and convenient for her family,
“
The mining life is perfect for us. We are very independent of each other although we love to spend time together... just not necessarily all the time.
”
“
The kids have a lot of time with myself & then they have a lot of time with their dad, while I work and have ‘Jo time’.
”
Getting into the mines can be a long and costly process and even once you have all the necessary requirements for entering the mines, a job is not always guaranteed. Although of course, once you eventually get into the mines the monetary rewards generally make up for the initial process.
Always keep in mind that although health and safety is always a priority on site, there is always risk associated within the industry. Last year the DEEDI (Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation) found there were 640 injuries requiring medical attention in Queensland coal mines with two fatalities from surface work. The mines themselves might cause a danger to it’s workers but commuting for up to 4 hours to work twice a week can also put a miner at risk of road accidents and traffic infringements. Risks aside, the Mackay and Whitsundays are in a prime and privileged position to take full advantage of above average wages while receiving training on the job for life-long skills and qualifications. Extended time off gives miners the advantage of concentrated quality time and the benefit of frequent getaways. Local minor Brent French enjoys a lifestyle roster 7/7 with his wife and two children.
“
Even though it can be hard being away from home for seven straight days, knowing that my family is financially secure and I can give them the lifestyle they deserve, makes it worth it.
”
The mining industry is the backbone of the Australian economy and with the CSIRO stating “It is anticipated that work of the Minerals Down Under Flagship will facilitate the discovery of $250 billion new mineral resources in Australia by 2030” demonstrating the mining boom of Queensland has only just begun and guarantees no shortage of work for decades to come.

Being an international DJ, Q you have a huge fan base across places like Asia and America. What do you love best about your Australian Fans?
The combination of DJ Q and Model has taken you around the globe. Any favorite experiences?
I DJ all around the world. A Being overseas only reiterates the fact that Australia is my home... I love Australia and especially all of my Australian fans. You’ve recently DJ’d at the Q 4th Annual Easter Undie’s Ball at Magnums in Airlie Beach. What do you think of the locals and atmosphere in Airlie?
Every experience is amazing. A From touring India, DJ-ing on the beaches in Thailand, to massive super clubs in Hollywood, and living in China for nearly a year. I feel blessed with all the opportunities I’ve been given. You have a CD coming out Q this year; can you tell us a little about it? PUMP IT Vol 5. Is a A compilation CD that I was involved in mixing. It’s a very commercial dance CD... I do play primarily house, however, I thought I might do something different for the Aussie fans.
It was a fantastic party A atmosphere at Magnums... everyone really got into it, we were all dressed up in theme. I was able to push the tempo a bit with some new bombs straight from overseas... and the crowd really took to it and a few locals even knew every drop.. so I was impressed. Definitely will be partying there again soon.
You had a personal invite Q by Hugh Hefner to party at the Playboy Mansion. What was that like?
You started out in music Q with the Violin when you were 5. What made you transition to the world of electronic music?
It’s an amazing place. I DJ A there regularly now... about every 3 months. I’m back there again in August for the Rock The Mansion Party.
I’ve wanted to be a DJ since A I was about 16... But obviously the equipment can be quite expensive for a 16 year old! I finally found the time and commitment to properly make it my world in the last few years.
Who was your biggest Q inspiration for you when you were starting out?
With all the travel and jetQ setting, do you have any time for a relationship in there?
I was heavily influenced way A back then by Fatboy Slim, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, Daft Punk and Massive Attack.
Not really... I’m sure I’d make A time for the right person though!
Q
What was it like adorning the famous bunny ears?
At first, it was all quite A overwhelming. To be honest, its really hard to DJ with them on. I’m happy that I’m a part of the Playboy family.
You have your picture Q on buses, cabs and billboards around Hong Kong and Macau. What goes through your head when you see yourself on a passing bus?
How did you get into modelling?
My mother took me into an agency in Brisbane where I was signed for cat walk and fashion modelling.
It’s a little bit weird at first. A People would take photos of me on the taxis or buses and post them onto my Facebook or Tweet them and say that I took them home the other night haha!
Q
What’s in store for 2012?
Releasing my first track A and spending a lot more time producing.

We caught up with Sunshine Coast based mine-worker, Glenn McCabe, this month, to talk about his transition from battling insurgents in Afghanistan, to a new career in the Bowen Basin. Stewart Cooper from CORE asked the questions.
46 • www.coremag.com.au
Q
When and where were you born?
I was born in 1981 in A Montmorency, a northern suburb of Melbourne, in the Diamond Valley. I have a twin brother living in Noosa and an older brother working in the Victorian Police Force.
Q
Can you tell us a little about your early years?
I grew up playing Aussie A Rules footy at local and representative level. I met great mates, and current Collingwood players, Heath & Rhys Shaw and Ben Johnson, playing Victorian School Boys. I was always into fitness and left school early to pursue a career in professional cycling. I was pretty sure I had a big future in cycling, after winning the Vic State Time Trial title when I was 19, but I still completed my carpentry apprenticeship as a backup because cycling was a tough way to earn a living.
Q
Did you ever get the chance to compete against Cadel?
No. He was still riding A mountain bikes while I was competing. I did ride in a training run one day that he was on, but he wasn’t as well known then as he is now. As a qualified carpenter, Q why did you decide to join the Army? I had a good mate who had A already joined and he encouraged me to follow suit. We served together in 4RAR Commando (now 2Commando) for two years, in Sydney.
Q
What tours of duty did you complete?
I completed three tours. One A in East Timor and the other two in Afghanistan. I spent over eighteen months in Afghanistan.
Q
Can you tell us a bit about your time there?
During my last tour, I was A posted to a remote patrol base about 50kms north of our main base at Tarin Kowt. The fortified compound we occupied was previously a Taliban stronghold. During my three months there, we were attacked every day by a combination of rockets, grenades, gunfire or IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices).
Q
How did you cope with the constant onslaught?
When you serve in combat A situations, you tend to form strong bonds with your team. They become the closest thing to family you have. When one person needs support, the rest step in to provide it.
Q
How did you deal with the loss of mates?
Probably the most publicised A of all would be Jacob Moreland and Darren Smith. They were both Engineers attached to us, at the time they lost their lives in an IED strike during a foot patrol. The entire team took it really bad. The remaining months of my tour saw a further ten mates killed in action. Many others were wounded too. Those of us fortunate enough to make it back in one piece are extremely lucky. We had near misses every day with bullets hitting earpieces, or soldiers stepping on pressure triggers that didn’t work as intended.
Q
What’s on your agenda now?
I’ve been enjoying my start in A mining, working for Fire & Safety Industries as a field technician. Working remote is pretty much in my blood now, and the job gives me enough time off to enjoy the company of my beautiful wife, Abbie. We are expecting our first bub in July and I can’t wait. We are currently living in Mooloolaba, but will consider shifting up here if it means having more time together. At the moment, I’m enjoying the surf too much!

The Former Origins Greats Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos is coming to Mackay this month – and being one of only seven locations in the state to offer this great opportunity to our local Indigenous Australian school leavers and job seekers, makes this an opportunity that can’t be missed. The Expo drew record crowds in 2011, with over 14,000 people walking through the doors and being offered valuable unique advice regarding careers, training and the importance of staying in school. The success of this amazing opportunity couldn’t have got to where it is today without the support and encouragement of some of Origins finest players, who will also present at the events, offering their advice, the chance for a chat and of course, nab yourself an autograph and photo op. According the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate of indigenous Australians from 18 years to 24 years of Age was 20.8% compared to 9.1% of non – indigenous. The aim of The FOGS Expo is to close the Gap , bringing in inspirational Origin Greats such as Allan Langer, Steve Walters, Carl Webb, Tony Currie, Sam Backo, Colin Scott and Gary Belcher who attended the Cairns Expo in March which attracted a whopping 4,000 visitors over the expected 2000. Attendees were able to chat in a relaxed environment with businesses such as Rio Tinto, Woolworths, Defence Force Recruiting, James Cook University, Virgin Australia, Hastings Deering, Skytrans, Mantra Group and Sea Swift regarding career paths and possible employment. This year and next, with new funding from the Australian Federal Government, the Expo will be able to continue assisting Indigenous Australians on their future and expand further, this year adding on the Sunshine Coast to the limited line up. Regarding the Government grant and the invaluable opportunities offered by the Expo, The FOGS website has quoted the Executive Chairman, Gene Miles stating, “I think the government can see the results that the program is having and the momentum it has created, particularly in the northern regions of Queensland” “Obviously, a main driver of the Expos is getting kids in contact with potential employers. But there are aspiration-building exercises as well, with Year 10 students coming along and seeing the types of things that are available.”
These kids leave the Expos with “ some goals and direction in life, and
then go back to their schools, take the appropriate subjects and set themselves off on a new course in life.
”
With the unbeatable combination of high powered businesses and training providers teamed with the awe-inspiring pulling power of Origin Greats under one roof, the Expo will continue to help provide a better life for Indigenous Queenslanders and bring a brighter future. Hopefully with a continuing successful participant turn out, Mackay will continue to enjoy the privilege of hosting this event for years to come.

CORE’s Stewart Cooper, caught up with NICOLE ‘Nic’ CHALLEN this month at Terowie Village, to chat about her life and career path in the mining industry.
50 • www.coremag.com.au
Bundaberg born, Nicole moved to Mackay with her family to attend school at Holy Spirit College. During her schooling, Nicole developed an interest in the Law and seriously considered completing Year 12 and heading to university for a few years but, eager to start earning money, left after Year 10 and started a career in hospitality. This enabled her to save enough, together with the first homeowners grant, to buy her first investment property, at age 16. This switched on young lady now owns her own home, has one investment property and has a second investment under construction. Nicole’s career in mining started in occupational and industrial medicine, having to administer drug and alcohol tests and maintain the records of these and Coal Board medicals for a large number of mine workers. The next job she applied for was a position in an employment agency itself. During the interview, the woman asked if she would consider applying for another position they had going with a company called Leighton Contractors. “At first I didn’t know if this was a brush-off, or they saw enough in my resume to suit the role,” said Nic. I’m guessing it was the resume, as it took me longer to read it than it did to write this article. From Diplomas in Occupational Health & Safety and Management to Certificate IV training in Onsite Environmental Management, Frontline Management plus Training & Assessing, the list just kept going as it dawned on me that she wasn’t just a pretty face! The job was at Poitrel Mine as SHE & T (Safety, Health, Environment and Training) Administration Officer. “I had severe tonsillitis at the interview so I reckon I got the job because it allowed my interviewer to get a word in. They’re not always that lucky!” Nic commenced work there in April 2007 before being promoted to SHE & T Officer and Quality Representative in October 2008. “My boss turned me into a realist here and I started viewing things literally,” Nic said. “It prepared me for some of the tasks I undertake in my present role, like writing safety and risk management procedures, and managing site incidents and injuries.”
“I take my job very seriously, but I still like to have fun in my spare time,” Nic says. “I have a close-knit family. We love fishing, crabbing, dirt bike riding, horses, the beach and V8’s. I guess they’re pretty typical pastimes for a lot of locals.” In September 2009, an opportunity saw Nicole move to the Peak Downs Mine as Leighton Contractors SHE & T Coordinator. “It was a massive step up for me and my biggest learning curve so far,” Nic stated. “It was a little daunting being thrown in front of 70 mine workers to kick my public speaking off, but, being thrown in at the deep end was probably what made me so determined to succeed.” In July 2011, Nicole accepted her current role of SHE & T Superintendent at Moorvale Mine. “I was confident that I was ready for the challenge, not so confident that the job would be mine,” Nic said. “I think it says a lot about the company I work for, given I was only 25 when I started in this job last year.” Jeff Moncrieff, Nicole’s current boss and Leighton Contractors Project Manager at Moorvale Mine, commented that, “Nicole is wise beyond her years and levelheaded”. I asked Nicole why Leighton Contractors title of her various positions differed from the industry standard use of the acronym HSET. “Anyone that works in the mining industry these days will know that personal safety is the number one priority for employers. I guess Leighton Contractors decided to highlight that fact in the title,” Nic stated. “I didn’t change it because I’m female or because it rhymes with G & T, as you suggested.” Nic asked me what G & T was! I thought she was joking until I asked if she knew what a VCR was. She responded with “Yeah, Vodka, Coke and Raspberry is one of my favourite drinks. It’s almost as sweet as Bundy”. Close family friend, Phil Giles, attributes most of her success to the fact Nicole developed her mother’s determination and her father’s skills of negotiation. “Nic has always been a doer and a fighter and not easily scared from a challenge,” Phil stated. “Jenny and Steve are great people, and it reflects in their kids.” Good luck Nic! You deserve it.

Table for Two:
Finding something awesome to get the wife/mum for Mother’s Day shouldn’t be that hard, right? Wrong! Some of the usual presents might find you in hot water and it’s a long 12 months before you get a chance to make it up to her. We thought we’d make it a little easier for you with some tips on picking the perfect present.
What would make mum’s day? Something as simple as taking the time to take her out to lunch or for a coffee will do the trick. You’d be amazed at how many mums would rather being taken out to lunch by her favourite boy, than an over-the-top expensive gift. It’s not about the dollars spent - after all, it’s the thought that counts!
Someone To Take Over: Every mum needs time off from running the household. Giving mum the night off or even better, the whole day off is a perfect present. Make a deal with the kids that you will all chip in to do the housework or hire a cleaner for a few hours to knock off some of those chores. You could even throw on an apron and whip up dinner while she relaxes.
Guilt-Free Shoe Shopping: Mums love their shoes but often feel a little guilty spending big on something that seems so frivolous. So, give her the go-ahead with a voucher that she can spend on shoes anywhere, anytime, at any price. This might be something like a voucher you and the kids make yourselves with a ‘no-questions asked’ clause so she can buy those killer hot pink pumps without feeling guilty.
Bling bling: The trusty old favourite among mums is of course the jewellery option! Earn some additional points by actually finding out what kind of jewellery you old girl likes - it will make your job of choosing something for her that much easier.
Pamper Time: Time is limited when you’re a mum and that means a massage, facial, manicure or wax are not high on the priority list. Why not book her in for some TLC so she has no excuse not to go. Or buy a voucher which she has to spend that week so she actually does it.
If you’re still in doubt - take her shopping and let her pick! It’s a no-brainer!
Appliances That Everyone Uses: Mums love cool kitchen appliances that make their jobs easier or look great, but don’t make the mistake of buying something that everyone can use. Stay away from toasters, kettles, sandwich presses, can openers, and hair dryers... things that you and the kids use every day.
Diet Books: The latest diet may be number one on the Bestsellers’ List.... but unless your lady has specifically asked for a book on weight loss, do not let her unwrap one on Mother’s Day. You may not like the response you get.
Spanx Slimwear: These slimming garments which have been hiding unflattering curves on women for years may seem like a great idea at first glance, but trust us, you don’t want to be the one sending this as a gift. Touted as fashionable, flattering and always in style, unless your mother specifically asks for Spanx, you better steer clear. Otherwise, you may be accused of calling her fat and not even know it. Follow the golden rule – Don’t buy underwear for any mum, unless you’re the one who’s married to her!
Electronic Devices: Celebrity Perfume: Your lady wears perfume named after French or Italian designers so why try and impress her by buying the latest reality TV or pop-star’s fragrance.

Again, Mother’s Day is about symbolising your love and appreciation for the mother of your children. A new 70” TV may be great to watch the Friday night footy, but it doesn’t say ‘Thanks Mum’.
As if the catalogues flooding the letterbox weren’t enough of a reminder, it’s 7pm the night before Mother’s Day and you’ve got nothing. It’s too late to get the kids to dig out their craft box so what do you do? Well, luckily CORE found some innovative ideas to get you across the line.
Need Petrol With That? Service stations have a plethora of potential Mother’s Day gifts. Grab some chocolate and her favourite magazine, wrap them up with a few herbal tea bags and call it a relaxation pack and you’re home free.
Leave work behind and get a FREE night on us...
Music To My Ears: Thanks to the magic of the internet, you can download your lady’s favourite music or a new album, burn it onto a disc and get the kids to make a funky cover. Ta da... your very own Mother’s Day music mix.
Tabloid Heaven: The internet becomes your best friend again and comes up trumps with a wide variety of magazine subscriptions that you can order at any time of the day or night. Purchase a subscription to her favourite magazine, print off the receipt and whip it into a card the kids made.

Small Screen Escape: Those video shops are open late. Drop in and get a movie you know she’d love and some of those chocolates at the counter. You could drop by the bottle-o on the way home for some bubbly. Get the kids to do their best work decorating a room where she can lock herself away for the night and enjoy a movie.
Mother’s Day is all about the kids, right? Then why are YOU stuck thinking of things to get your lady on their behalf? If the kids didn’t make something creative and super-cool at day-care or school then you’re in trouble. Here are some very cheap ways to get the kids involved in spoiling mum at the last minute. Photo Shoot: Mum is usually the one behind the camera making sure all the milestones are captured. So why not set up a Mother’s Day shoot just for her. Get the camera out and let mum play model for the morning. Let the kids take the photos too and pick their favourites to give to her later.
Pretty As A Picture: Still on the photo theme, find some cheap wooden picture frames, let the kids get creative with some paints and glitter and put a nice photo of mum and the kids inside.
Backyard Getaway: Help mum escape by making a backyard vacation. Pitch a tent, get the kids to decorate the yard with a theme like African Safari, or Balinese Jungle, and cook breakfast or lunch outside. Pretend you’re having an adventure and make mum feel like she’s escaped the humdrum for a few hours.

We all have an era that we relate to the most, but no period of time gets more laughs, flashbacks or holds memories like the 80’s. It was just over 20 years ago, but for those of us around during the 80’s, it seems like only yesterday. We thought we’d stir up some of those memories by re-living some 80’s Gold.
Fluoro! It was all about mixing up the electric colours of fluoro pink, orange, yellow and green. ‘Choose Life’ t-shirts were all the rage with both men and women thanks to Wham, and Madonna set off the craze of layering clothes and teaming them with lace and cheap jewellery. Blokes’ haircuts went from the mullet to the flat-top and everyone was using up their mum’s hairspray to get the look just right.
There is far too much 80s gold to choose from but how about David Bowie, Air Supply, David Lee Roth, Huey Lewis and the News, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, Wham, Boy George… and Michael Jackson was still black! Aussies also rocked the top 20 most weeks with INXS, Pseudo Echo, Noiseworks, Rose Tattoo, and the Hoodoos hitting the AM radio air waves each night.
Friday nights were the best night to be home in the 80s. With only two or three channels to chose from back then, everyone was watching and talking about the hit shows like Charlie’s Angels, A-Team, Knight Rider, Miami Vice, Battlestar Gallactica and The Greatest American Hero.
Remember sitting down on a stool at the shopping centre to play Pac Man, Racing Car or Space Invaders? Those were the days of very few graphics where you had to rely on your skills of speed to beat the machine. Once the Atari hit the shelves you could have your own all-night gaming session (as long as you sat close enough to the TV that your controller was plugged into).
They might seem cheesy today, but so many of the films in the 80s defined the generation. Many nights were spent at the cinema watching classics like the Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Back to the Future, ET, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Footloose and Ghostbusters. And don’t forget the Police Academy Series, Splash, Die Hard and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. 54 • www.coremag.com.au

I was lucky enough to attend the Darksiders II preview event in Sydney recently. The event was awesome – for starters it was held in a castle (well a 26 room mansion is close enough to a castle for me!), and – most importantly – I was able to play a two-hour demo of the upcoming game. Xbox 360 was the console of choice, although it should be interesting to see how this plays on the soon to be released Wii U. Darksiders II features Death, the most feared of the legendary four horsemen of the Apocalypse, on a quest to clear the name of his brother War, who was blamed for starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders. This sees him travel to the Maker’s Realm – the Makers are the creators of everything in the universe – however they are slowly dying out. Before their decline, they start building the Guarding – a huge stone creature whose role it is to fight the “Corruption” (huge crystalline growths) that is destroying their world. This story is occurring at the same time as War’s own journey in the original Darksiders. Death is a fun character to play. Unlike his brother, he is quick and agile with acrobatic skills reminiscent of Prince of Persia. He can run along walls and balance on small beams with ease and – amazingly – grace! It’s not too easy, though, and avoiding boiling pits of lava can be tricky until you learn the moves for each level. In combat, evading blows from enemies plays a big part, although there are plenty of weapons to try out along with Death’s trusty dual scythes. There are some RPG elements at play in the sense that Death is customisable – you can choose from a number of armor sets and there are Necromancer (magic) and Harbinger (warrior) skills to bestow him with, depending on which style you’d prefer him to take, and randomly generated loot to be found, making each Death unique. This game is quite larger than the first installment. To give you an idea, the 2 hour level I played at the preview was the map size of the entire original Darksiders game. There is a lot to discover, and there will be side quests as well to keep you going. There is a strong puzzle-solving element to the game, which is both enjoyable and also challenging at times. Accompanied by his ghostly horse, Despair, and his trusty crow sidekick, Dusk (who is essential for helping to navigate), Death’s journey in Darksiders II is looking to be a promising one!
What to get your hands on now! The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (X360 & PC) Sequel to the best-selling The Witcher, and based on the books of the same name, this role playing game is a must-play, if the hype surrounding the cinematic trailer is anything to go by. Star Wars Kinect (X360) This is the perfect game to make a fool out of yourself in front of your mates. No controller necessary – just jump around with your best Jedi moves to defeat the Dark Side. Ridge Racer Unbounded (X360 PS3 PC) Destruction! Explosions! This is no ordinary Ridge Racer – excitement plus with no boundaries leads to a thrilling car racing game.
Coming this month... Diablo III: The highly anticipated third installment of this hugely successful role-playing game series finally has a release date! Max Payne 3 (X360 PS3): Set 8 years after the last game, Max Payne returns. Will it live up to it’s name or be a Duke Nukem style disappointment? Time will tell! Resistance: Burning Skies (PSVita): Unit 13 proved that the Vita can handle a good shooter. The Resistance series will put it to the test with Burning Skies.

He rides a motorbike at speeds of up to 160kph and most of the time he’s leaning sideways, two feet off the earth. But this champion Supermoto rider could not be more grounded if he tried. CORE talked one-on-one with veteran motorcycle superstar and national champion ROSS TAYLOR about his passion for the sport and how he continues to push the limits every time he hits the track. Enlighten us Ross, Q what’s the difference between motocross, enduro and supermoto racing? Motocross is short circuit A off-road racing where you go over jumps and bumps. It’s a manmade circuit which is only one or two kilometres long. It’s all about intense short sprints. Enduro racing is following arrows through the bush for long periods of time (like for nine hours a day for four days), through the bush, up and down mountains and through creeks and gullies. It’s a 64 • www.coremag.com.au
test of man and machine against the elements. Supermoto is when you take an off-road bike and you put slip tyres on it and go racing on a bitumen circuit. Then you often turn off the bitumen and have a dirt section as well. So you have tar, jumps and dirt corners all in the one lap. The whole idea of it is to be the ultimate racer. A road racer has just as much chance of winning as a motocross, enduro or speedway rider.
Q
So how did you get into supermoto?
It was by accident. In 2004 I A was doing a track day at Warwick and just happened to have an old bike with me and I caught the eye of some of the local riders and they told me I should race. I had just retired from enduro racing, which I had been doing for nine years or so. Off-road racing was my background before I got into this bitumen caper.
Q
What do you ride?
I ride a motorcross bike A which I converted to suit my needs. It’s a Honda CRF 450 and
that puts me in the top class with the big bikes.
Q
It’s big in Europe. Because A of its style it’s a very spectacular sport. We go sideways and leave black smoke and tyre marks on the road so it’s a hit with spectators. Riders love it because of the crazy things you can do on the bikes without crashing.
Where can we find you?
I call three clubs home, A the Whitsunday Motorsport club at Proserpine, Townsville and Mareeba. I live in Charters Towers so I spread my spare time between the three.
Q
What kind of gear do you Q need? I have full one-piece leathers A which are basically indestructible. I had a crash at Phillip Island at 150kph and didn’t even tear the stitching, it just scuffed. You also need full-length back protectors, road racing gloves, and motocross or road racing boots and good helmets.
You sound like you just love it on the track.
I think it’s just testing A yourself. I’m one of the guys who just doesn’t waste any time on the track. The moment we’re let out of pit lane I’m at ten tenths and I just love to see what I can get away with. Everyone knows I’m having a good time cause I’m laughing and yakking and the bike just does things that simply amaze me.
It really is an unbelievable feeling when you’re having a good day and nothing can go wrong and you think ‘this is ridiculous, this thing should just crash’, but for whatever reason it doesn’t. It’s not just the adrenaline rush; you push yourself to see what you can get away with.
Q
Does anything scare you?
If I’ve been off the bike for A a while I get a bit nervy in the lead up to a race. But come race day I just walk in there and feel indestructible.
Q
We hear you’ve taken out some serious competitions?
Yeah I’m currently leading A the Queensland Titles in the S1 Unlimited Class, which is the open class. Last year I won the S1 Unlimited Queensland Titles, the Vets Queensland Titles and Australian Championship in S1. Do you have any advice for Q anyone wanting to have a go? You don’t have to spend a lot A of money to get into it. Just put a set of road trail tyres on rims you already have on your bike and out you go.
What kind of following does Q supermoto have?

If you don’t know what State of Origin is, you should be taken out the back and beaten. It is the single most important series of Rugby League, ever! Here’s a little history about the State of Origin series. In 1908, QLD and NSW went head to head for the fist time. Back then it was a one off game until 1980, when the 3 game series was introduced. Since then, State of origin has been a physically demanding, contest that has produced some of the most exciting games and painful injuries and as well some kickass fights. Here are a couple of the toughest moments in State of Origin: • GAME 2, 1988: A biff involving Phil Daley and Greg Conescu turned into an all-in. When Wally Lewis was dismissed for starting the brawl, The Lang Park crowd chucked beer cans in disgust. • Game 2, 1991: Just before half time, Mark Geyer roughed up Steve Walters and a brawl broke out. Then, as Geyer and Wally Lewis faced off, referee David Manson had to stand between them. • Game 1, 1992: One of the most physically brutal games in Origin history. Steve Jackson copped a concussion, Bradley Clyde broke a bone and both Gary Larson and Laurie Daley received blows to the head. Not to mention Ben Elias’s bathed in blood. If you’re an Aussie bloke chances are it doesn’t take much for you to consider yourself entertained. Your diet is made up of beer and meat, while your cultural tastes include having a laugh, chicks, cars, footy and fighting. This is why we love the State Of Origin: You get to park on the couch, drinking beer with your mates and watching the footy, while the missus cooks you steak. Chances are you were just talking about the new muffler you put on your fully sick Commodore, and chances are there will be a good bit of biff, which will be hilarious. What’s not to love?

This is not an event for wimps. Unlike other codes, which are a glorified version of catchthe-ball, State of Origin is Australia’s equivalent to the gladiatorial arena. It’s the series that pits state against state, mate against mate, while delivering thrilling on-field action that guarantees to entertain. BEFORE THE NEXT BIG GAME, CHECK OUT THIS SWEET ORIGIN TRIVIA, AND YOU CAN DRIVE THE MISSUS INSANE WITH SOME OF THESE INTERESTING FACTS: • Queensland won the first game of the State of Origin series, in 1980, 20-10. The game was played in front of 33,000 fans. • In 1987, a State of Origin match was played in Long Beach, California, in front of some very confused Americans • Queensland’s King Wally won a record eight man of the match awards. • Allan Langer had the most appearance in State of Origin, with 34 games for the Maroons, and was the oldest player, at 35 years and 331 days. • New South Welshman Ryan Girdler scored the most points in a State of Origin Game, scoring three tries and kicking ten goals to total 32 points in Game 3 of 2000. • The biggest Origin crowd was 88,336 at Stadium Australia for Match 2 in 1999 • The most points scored in an Origin game was 72, in the Blues’ 56-16 flogging of the Maroons in Match 3 in 2000. • The least points scored in a match were when Queensland beat New South Wales, 2-0 in Match 1, 1995.
