Hailing from Adelaide, SA, The Beards have risen in popularity since their debut in 2005. Samantha from CORE Magazine catches up with Nathaniel Beard to have a chat about, well, beards!

Q

Why Beards?

I wouldn’t expect you to A understand – having a beard just completes your life. When I was beardless, I felt as though something was missing and now that I have a beard, I’m 100% satisfied all the time. Did you all just want to Q celebrate the splendour of having a beard and share the joy with the world? It needed to happen. We A all have beards and all felt very passionate about it! Most men can grow beards, and I think we thought that men don’t feel like they’re allowed to [grow beards]. We wanted to change the preconception of bearded men. When you shave, you are denying who you really are. Nathaniel, you kind of look Q like a 70’s porn/rock star, crossed with an Amish man… how did your look develop? I don’t really think about my A look at all, except for the beard. I have no issues except for having my beard – once the beard is right, everything else falls into place! Most men deny themselves the right and duty to have a beard. If you can grow a beard and shave 10 • www.coremag.com.au

it off, then you’re letting mankind down. How long did it take you to Q grow your mighty beard? Initially two weeks to grow a A beard. The last time I was clean-shaven was in 2007 for two weeks! We all shaved for a music video and felt like fakers and had to immediately grow them back. I promise you that I’ll never have a bare chin again – I’d rather die than not have a beard. Your hit single, ‘You should Q consider having sex with a bearded man’, came in at #99 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2011, how did that feel? We were stoked about it! A We didn’t really think that society would recognise or accept a song about beards on a national scale. Back when we started, the bearded man was subjected to a lot of criticism, so we were really pleased that beards are more accepted now! We’d love to see more songs about beards in the Hottest 100 in the future! Judging from the ladies’ Q reactions, do you think sex with a bearded man is better than with a non-bearded man? Or are you not really a man if you don’t have a beard?

If you don’t have a beard, A then you’re definitely not a real man. I don’t really know from a woman’s perspective, but they do seem to enjoy themselves more with a bearded man! I can only assume it’s the beard.

Yes, definitely! We weren’t A sure if we could write another album about beards, but it turns out we could! If we want inspiration, all we have to do is look in the mirror and the beard will inspire us!

You guys have travelled Q to Alaska to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the World Beard and Moustache Championships, how was that?

Are you looking forward Q to coming to Airlie Beach? Ever been up this way before?

It was full on! We were living A in the ‘Bearded Utopia’ which, oneday, we wish to create! Were your impressive Q beards well received? It was great - bearded A men outnumbered non bearded men! We just walked around and nodded at other bearded men in acknowledgement and appreciation. You new album, Having a Q Beard is the New Not Having a Beard (released in March), are you guys happy with how it’s been received?

I hear there are lots of A mosquitoes! But that part of the world is on the must–visit list. We’ve also heard that beards are pretty scarce in tropical QLD. We’re hoping to change that. Mackay and the Whitsundays could possibly be the new Beard Capital of the world! Are you and your bearded Q bandmates going to have time to check out the sights? We’ve pretty much got a A gig every night, so we’ll have an afternoon, evening and morning in each place. We’re always keen to check out every place that we have a show and guage the ratio of beards to non-beards. I daresay you’ll see us around!

& What do the movie I Am Sam and the self confessed music geek I Am Sam have in common? Absolutely nothing! But you can bet, like the movie, this DJ, producer and remixer is heading towards the same legendary status. There is no doubt that the electronic dance music scene’s eyes and ears are firmly set on I Am Sam’s next move. Within a short amount of time, I Am Sam has risen from a local disc jockey and aspiring music producer to a national DJ, international producer and top notch remixer. In 2011, I Am Sam gave the international house scene a bit of a shimmy and shake. First off was a feature in the official 2011 ITM DJ awards Top 50, then it was the his original masterpiece, I Am Sam – Touch The Sky featuring in the Australian Club Chart Top 50 and being supported by the likes of David Guetta (Radio), Paul Van Dyk, Kid Massive, Till West and the Billboard 100. Hed Kandi Australia also noticed the rapid rise of this talented DJ and were quick to snatch I Am Sam up as their national resident DJ and headline act. The I Am Sam soundwaves rippled across the globe, with MTV UK producer head hunting I Am Sam to feature in an upcoming reality show, My Super Sweet World Class. In 2012, Sam had his breakthrough hit “The Real Thing” hit a high #6 in the ARIA Club Charts and charted for a total of 11 weeks. Sam has since stepped back into the studio and is currently working on an EP coming out on Onelove as well as releasing a number of remixes for Ministry of Sound and Reroche. www.facebook.com/officialiamsam/info

Plus let’s not forget there’s plenty of ‘imitation’ guitars to boot so now gone are the days where you sway awkwardly during that intense instrumental count. Instead you can belt it out Clay Bangers style where you never know, you just might win yourself a thirst-quenching prize or two.

I GIVE OUT LOTS OF LITTLE PRIZES; BEST MOVES, BEST GUITAR SOLO, BEST DUO AND SO ON, PEOPLE HAVE A LOT OF FUN ON STAGE, THE ATMOSPHERE IS INCREDIBLE.

Seeing how the next-Gen Karaoke stage is now taking off, Tash has decided to it amp it up a few notches, to make the challenge a little more serious. “I’m hoping to start a new Friday night competition in November for some serious cash prizes.” Planning a Best Male, Best Female and Best Duo Challenge, there will be a $500 cash prize, compliments of Gordi’s and Feelindy’s Beauty Studio, for first place in each category, plus a substantial second and third prize for each. “Friday nights will be a great night to let your hair down [or bound up nice and tight in a Diana Ross wig] and have a go at Karaoke and maybe even take out first place.” With her Karaoke taking the stage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 9pm to closing time, it seems our favourite pasttime has taken a favourable twist and been given new life at Gordi’s, which definitely sounds well worth it to make a night of. 14 • www.coremag.com.au

Outback Jacks Bar & Grill, or OBJ as we like to call it, is a restaurant that offers relaxed, casual dining with full bar facilities and the largest range of steaks on any menu in the world! You can choose your cut of meat from the display cabinet, walk through our chilled wine cellar, watch the chefs in action with the open kitchen and kick back and let your steak melt in your mouth. Outback Jacks Mackay has a great walk in wine vault, which was, in fact, the old ANZ bank vault. With all original fittings, 1.5ft thick walls and climate control, you will be assured to have a large selection of top quality wines at the correct drinking temperature.

JACKS’ CHOICE
While having your mouth watering mega prime rib eye, cooked to medium rare, topped with one of many toppers, steakhouse fries and fresh steamed vegetables, OBJ would recommend enhancing your steak with a bottle Mary Kathleen Cabernet-Merlot. This wine is from Coriole Vineyard, McLaren Vale, South Australia.

NOT SO KEEN ON STEAKS? Why not try the sensational Atlantic salmon - skin on, pan-fried to medium rare, then topped with Béarnaise sauce, with a side of mash potato and steamed vegetables. A winner in anyone’s books when complemented with Henschke Cranes Chardonnay from the Eden Valley, East of the Barossa in South Australia.

A lot of us look back after being out of school for ten years and have a good hard think over what’s gone down. MICALA CONNOLLY looks back and has a good ‘laugh at how a random application got her into the career and life she loves today in Emerald. “I always wanted to be in medicine, but unfortunately I had a little too much fun in my senior years at school so when I didn’t get the marks I wanted I was a little stumped as to what to do next.” Usually at this point you’d think the panic mode would set in and then you might throw away the idea of study completely and try some travel perhaps. Luckily for Micala, she had a plan B. “I just knew I wanted to be in the health field, so with the marks that I got, I applied and was accepted into the Bachelor program for Health Science, majoring in Health Safety and Environment.” “I remember my first lesson, the teacher asked us who here knew what the degree was all about. Only about two of us in a class of twelve put up our hands (I wasn’t one of them). He then went on to explain what the degree was all about and assured that in this line of work, we’d never be out of a job.” As it turns out, the kind of work would be along the lines of a health and safety officer working for the underground contracts department. And by the way laws and legislation are going, coupled with the rate our mining industry is growing, well no, it seems she’ll never be out of a job and let’s face it, it’s quite lucrative to-boot.

I’ve been doing this for ten years now and still enjoy the work. It’s a field that continually changes and there’s always something new to learn.

Starting out in the city working from the offices of an engineering company who worked with mining groups, Micala moved out to the Emerald area - getting a closer look at the world of mining three years ago where she comically has a jeer at herself, “That makes me almost a local!” And it seems a local she’ll certainly become, with a bit of love story happening having met a boy in her travels this side of the hill and has recently gotten engaged. “I did love it here before with a great group of friends making your own fun, but now it seems I have instant family as well so I think Emerald will be it for now, it’s a great place to be that’s for sure.” Which is good news considering the scarce number of people it seems with her qualifications teamed with eagerness to learn and her sense of diplomacy. “It’s definitely not the kind of job where you can walk into a place assuming you know more than everyone there and start dictating new procedures and changing things up. That would be no good for you, the employees or the managers.” Years ago a lot of readers might remember the more complacent days when it came to health and safety in the workplace, a lot might even laugh to themselves thinking of the things they used to do or get up to wondering how did they never get injured. Despite how we used to be and our attitudes toward change, Micala says those days are deinitely in the past.

Sailfish and juvenile Black Marlin are exciting fish to catch here in the Whitsundays and now is the time to do it! Each year these fish pass through our waters usually starting in winter and continuing through spring and often into early summer. The Sailfish average around 30-40kg but sometimes even bigger ones are hooked, up to 60kg. The Whitsundays holds many Sailfish records that have been caught over the years. The men’s 3kg and 8kg line class Australian records and the women’s 4kg, 10kg and 15kg line class Australian record Sailfish were all taken here in the Whitsundays. The juvenile Black Marlin generally is a little smaller, averaging around 25kg with the odd larger one thrown in.

BEST METHODS FOR CHASING BILLFISH Marlin and Sailfish can be very challenging fish to catch but highly rewarding at the same time. Generally speaking, all billfish are caught while trolling either skirted lures, rigged dead baits or live baits.

as garfish and mullet. Using trolling gear in a 10kg line class is a good starting point and using a 2-3 mtr trace or leader around 100lb will suffice.

Occasionally fish will get caught while chasing mackerel on hard bodied lures, gang rigged gar or ribbonfish. Trolling is by far the most productive method and, depending on the area you are fishing in, use either pusher style skirted lures around 4-8inches long or rigged dead baits such

Areas best to target are where you find bird activity feeding on baitfish on the surface, tide or current lines and areas that you find baitfish on the sounder. Lures usually work best at around 6-8knts and rigged baits a little slower, around 5-6knts.

Whitsunday GFC is hosting a big game fish tournament at the end of October, which is a heap of fun for all. Call Ash Warland for more info: 0413 628 899

HOOKS MUST BE SUPER SHARP When it comes to rigging lures it is paramount that you have sharp hooks. Billfish have a very bony mouth and trying to penetrate with a blunt hook is hopeless, especially if fishing with lures. Live baiting and some dead bait trolling the use of circle hooks is often the way to go. These hooks are best suited to hooking fish in the corner of the mouth once the bait has been swallowed and is much less harmful to the fish.

I’M HOOKED UP, SO WHAT NOW? Once a billfish is hooked, they usually leap out of the water trying to throw the hook that has them attached so it’s important to maintain a tight line at all times. Often it is best to keep the boat travelling forward while clearing the other lines and also maintaining that tight line during that first series of jumps! Once all the gear is cleared, you can start working on getting some of that line back! Usually the Sailfish and little Marlin often burn themselves out quickly spending a lot of the time out of the water jumping and carrying on, but you can always expect some fireworks close to the boat so be careful!

RELEASE IS THE BEST OUTCOME Neither Marlin nor Sailfish are great eating so these highly prized game fish are best to be quickly photographed then released to fight another day. Hopefully this will give someone else the thrill of a lifetime in catching one. If you want to find out more about chasing billfish, get down and join the local Game Fish Club. The Whitsunday GFC is affiliated with the Queensland Game Fish Association and hold meetings the first Tuesday of every month from 7.30pm at the clubhouse (VMR building in Cannonvale).

GEOFF MOOHIN caught this monster mud crab on a recent crabbing trip to Stanage Bay. The crab weighed in at at huge 2.6kgs!

STEPHEN ANDREWS, owner and operator of Western Action Firearms, has an appreciation and passion for custom and antique firearms like no other. Having been acquainted with the weaponry from a young age, his knack for knowing and sourcing unique and valuable firearms has come from years of experience and know-how. “Western Action Firearms was started due to my love for precision built firearms and the painstaking artwork that has been employed to decorate and embellish weapons over the centuries, to depict hunting and game scenes that stir up the imagination of what could happen on that once ofa lifetime hunt.” Most of us may take a stern view towards such items as generally having one purpose, unless you’ve watched Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The idea that firearms have and actually hold significant value as legitimate investment items is usually overlooked. “These pieces have not only been enjoyed by their first owners, but have lived on to take part in other lucky owners’ lives, who have collected and used them over the years. Many are surprised when they offer them up for sale again, realising the price they paid has increased up to 10 times their original value.” Using the term “shooting investments” is more precise in describing the nature of the firearms that Stephen deals with, and when you’re looking at an average of 30% growth over three years from purchase, it certainly doesn’t sound like you’ll be losing value anytime soon.

“With the sources and contacts I have I can also help with any rare and hard-to-find firearms and custom made options as well as calibres that are no longer made.” “I get calls all the time with queries on distance with calibres, best bullet weights etc., but I’m always happy to help my clients as I know too well that this area of expertise is hard to find these days.” “Even though there may not be a wide range of help, in 2011 and so far in 2012, more people have bought guns then ever before in the history of Australia.” “Gun licenses are being issued like never before as well, there is only a limited amount of rifles to go around that have been tried and proven or suit particular hunting or competition events, so it comes back to supply and demand.” Having run the business from home around his other work commitments, Stephen always happily makes time for calls and sees his clients over the weekends to have a chat about their current and future shooting investments.

Sourcing such weapons is obviously a tricky business and having someone in the know is definitely a benefit, especially when you’re dealing with import and export. Not only does Stephen source the desired weapon of your choice, he can also arrange a sale or legalise an heirloom you may have come into possession of.

Recreational Utility Vehicles (RUV’s) are fast becoming one of Australia’s most utilised farming and recreational vehicles. The RUV, also referred to as a Side by Side vehicle, provides the user with a host of practical applications for most jobs around the farm to recreational hunting and fishing. Two of Australia’s largest selling RUV’s are the Yamaha 700cc Rhino Auto 4x4 RUV and Kawasaki Teryx 750cc Auto 4x4, which are sold and serviced by Central Bike Centre, Emerald, to customers throughout the Central Highlands and Western regions. Consumers are now realising the overall benefits of a vehicle that can carry two passengers, plus a load of equipment in the tipper tray and also tow a trailer when necessary. A number of property owners have determined that there is certainly an economy of scale in purchasing one RUV as opposed to two standard ATV units. One RUV gives a wide range of flexibility whilst continuing to offer cost effective operation.

I TERYX INO & KAWASAK ON YAMAHA RH STOCKS LAST OCTOBER, WHILE THROUGHOUT

A clear trend has been seen amongst our senior population who still work the land. They wish to go about their work as they have done in the past however choose to do so in far more comfort, safety and often with someone who can accompany them for the ride. The off-road capability of the Yamaha Rhino and Kawasaki Teryx has to be seen to be believed. They both offer dual range 4WD with diff locks all round, coupled together with their light footprint on the ground allows them to achieve remarkable off road tasks which would leave much heavier four wheel drive vehicles behind. The Rhino and Teryx are both extremely easy to drive and many customers have told the staff at Central Bike Centre that the wife has now taken over the RUV as their personal farm/recreational vehicle. This ease of use and practicality allows drivers the ease of push button four wheel drive whilst moving, therefore reducing chances of bogging. Engage the diff locks and these vehicles can climb steep grades and crawl themselves out of heavy black soil. A host of optional accessories are also available for each model, allowing their owners to customise them to their specific needs. Accessories such as rooves, bull bars, winches, HID lights, belly and CV guards, and the list goes on.

RACIN

Now reading that title, you might be sitting back thinking ‘yeah but my street car is quick and it’s not even a race car’. Well let me set you straight on what it means to be quick. If you know anything about drag racing, you know that the cars that compete are everything from a street car going out to a Keep Speed Off the Streets meeting to a full blown drag car racing at national championships. And while we all enjoy going out for a skid in our daily driver cars, let’s face it, it’s the big boys and their expensive toys that pull the crowds. So when CORE Magazine wanted to feature a full blown drag car, I pointed them in the direct of local Supercharge Outlaw competitor, Paul “Ando” Anderson.

For the new school generation out there wondering how big is a 572cid big block? Well that equates to 9.37 litres. The 572 runs on that sweet smelling methanol (well it is until it’s burnt anyway, just any regular racer who has copped a face full of fumes and they’ll tell you how much it burns) and on average will chew through about 20 litres per run. That obviously includes the warm up, the burnout and the actual pass down the strip. Ando describes the car as pretty easy to drive, as long as it stays straight, once she gets a little out of shape - that’s when the fun starts.

Ando, as he is affectionately known to his friends and fans, has fast become a local favourite, and why wouldn’t he? Just look at his beautiful 6 second black 1968 RS Camaro. Ok yes it’s not the sort of Camaro that you take for a lap down to the shop to get a bottle of milk (well not without Johnny Law having something to say that is), but you have to admit that you’d all love to call it your own. The full tube frame front end houses a 572 cubic inch big block Chev with a PSI Blower screwed on top, which sits almost level with the roof line.

Butting up to the motor is a Phil Cruickshank built Powerglide and a Coan Converter, pushing back to the diff. Ando is currently running a Dana 60, which is a rebuild of a truck differential, however as you read this the car will be down as SCF Race Cars getting a new 9 ½ diff fitted along with a new rear end. Currently this rear end is a Ladder Bar set up, but this is also changing over to a 4 link, which should make the car launch a little more consistently by allowing for more adjustment, Ando explains. Well to use the word consistently with a Supercharged Outlaw is kind of an

in joke, you see once you start pushing a car to the 6 second marks, it becomes very difficult to make it consistent. However Ando hasn’t seemed to have had a great deal of problems with this of late. Running a personal best just a couple of days before catching up with us of 6.69 seconds, at 214mph, which he ran at Palmyra Dragway. He had previously run a 215mph at the 2012 Winternationals in Willowbank. He puts it simply that as long as you don’t try to over drive the car, you’ll be fine. It’s when racers try to save the pass after getting too far out of shape, that you start to have major concerns. At the end of the day it’s often better to back off and save the car than risk it all for one pass. Laying the power down to the black stuff is a pair of 16inch wide full slicks stretched over a set of Weld Alumastar wheels, which also helps to pick the front of the car up for the fan favourite wheel stands that he is becoming known for. Now if you’re not familiar with how this Camaro looks flying down the strip, let me paint a little picture for you. I watched Ando race at last year’s Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway (Brisbane). After a strong burnout (which the crowd loved by the way) Ando inched up to the line, and the moment the tree dropped, he buried his foot into that right pedal, resulting in a half track wheel stand that left us all watching stunned. Effectively, he was driving and steering off the wheelie bars for the first half of the track, and simply hoping that she stayed straight so he could keep on the gas.

Ando competes in the crowd favourite Supercharged Outlaw class, which is a Dial Your Own (DYO) class made up of Rootes or Screw type Supercharged (otherwise known as blown) V8 Cars and Dragsters running up to 6.50 seconds over the full quarter mile. So let me break that down for anyone that isn’t perhaps an avid drag racers fanatic, a quarter mile is 402.3 metres, thus meaning Ando is travelling that from stopped start to 214mph or 344km/h in a time of 6.69 seconds. Now consider that a new car, let’s say a Holden or Ford V8, will run somewhere around a 15 to 16 second quarter with a good reaction, with a little bit of work you should be able to get that down to about a 13 second, and every 10th of a second after that begins to cost more money and practice. Add to that the faster you go, the more safety requirements you have to install into your car, and you start to understand why this sport is really called a passion, as the saying goes “If you want to make a small fortune in drag racing, start with a big one”. All of this would not be possible without the help of his sponsors and Ando would like to take this chance to thank his major sponsor, Ezy Vehicle Rentals. He would also like to thank SCF Race Cars, and is looking forward to testing out the new set up, and is aiming for top qualifier at the next Winternationals. We’ll be sure you keep you updated with how he goes.

With $20 million invested in upgrades from 2011-2014, the Whitsunday Coast Airport is set to rise to international standards. From terminal to airstrip, the infrastructure improvements are designed to accommodate overseas tourists and fly-in, fly-out workers. CORE spoke with Whitsunday Coast Airport general manager SCOTT WATERS about the anticipated growth for both the airport and the region. A former Qantas employee, Scott currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the Whitsunday Regional Council, which owns and operates the airport.

Q

Many locals know of the Whitsunday Coast Airport as the Proserpine Airport. What makes the airport stand apart from others?

With a runway of 2073 metres, it’s the largest facility in the region, A with room to grow to 3000m. Our runway is large enough to receive international jets. This is extremely important for not only the resource sector but also our more traditional market, the tourism industry. We have the ability to stimulate both aspects of the region’s economy as well as our agriculture industry with via aviation exports. In the past year the Whitsunday Coast Airport has undergone a Q $9 million redevelopment. What were the major changes? Seven million dollars was spent redeveloping the terminal facilities to A bring it up to standard and add international servicing sections. Two million dollars was spent on a brand-new car park and transit infrastructure. We have developed specific bus zones that the airport didn’t have in the past which will make the transfer to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands smoother. Also, we’re working with airlines to combine the price of airfare and bus transfer to make travel seamless. Whitsunday Regional Council is investing another $13 million Q over the next two years. How will the funds be spent? The runway will be lengthened and upgraded to enhance our A international capabilities. We’ll also continue to add architectural elements to the airport. We’re the only airport in the region that has the ability to grow on a large scale because we’re situated on 430 hectares of land. As such there is huge potential to master-plan the site. 32 • www.coremag.com.au

Speaking of international capabilities, does the Whitsunday Q Coast Airport currently receive flights from overseas? Not yet, but we do have the ability to take in international charter A traffic in our recently upgraded terminal which now includes customs, quarantine, immigration and border protection facilities.

Q

When can we expect the first international flights to arrive?

We’re looking to engage in an international charter program with a A focus on bringing services from the Pacific and New Zealand in the next two years which we feel will provide a strong in-bound and outbound market. During the peak tourism season from May to October, we believe that we can sustain a service to and from New Zealand at least once a week.

Q

A

After Auckland and Queenstown, what’s next? We’re looking at services to and from China and other Asian countries while ensuring we have a strong domestic schedule.

Our tourism industry desperately needs that connectivity and market access. It’s going to benefit the Whitsundays as well as the Mackay and Isaac region.

During the expansion process, what other airports have served Q as inspiration? A

We’ve looked at how the Gold Coast Airport evolved over the past decades. We see them as the benchmark in the industry.

A stop-over at the Gold Coast Airport is quite pleasant these Q days. What amenities can passengers expect to enjoy at the Whitsunday Coast Airport? We’ll be adding a store focusing on the Made in the Whitsunday A brand, being a kiosk of locally crafted wares is one of the departure lounge attractions as well as the enhanced news agency and fullylicensed cafeteria. In the past financial year over 215 000 passengers travelled Q through Whitsunday Coast Airport, most frequently to Brisbane. With the recent and upcoming upgrades, do you expect that number to rise? During this financial year we’re trending at 13-15% growth which A means we’ll see in excess of 250 000 passengers. It will be our best year ever by way of passenger numbers. We’ve been focused on revising our schedule to suit passenger needs. In the coming years, we plan to expand our fly-in, fly-out market to service the resource industry. Positioning the Whitsunday Coast Airport as a fly-in, fly-out Q provider is no easy task. What’s your process? We’re working to meet the needs of the industry. We do everything A from seeking feedback from passengers as they come off the aircraft to in-depth survey work to determine which flights are needed and when.

As the mining industry booms, there has been a huge influx of workers from the mines and their families moving to he Whitsundays and visiting the Whitsunday Health Clinic. Many of these workers are on rotating shift rosters and we treat them for a variety of health problems. Anyone doing any kind of shift work can be at risk of health issues. Shift work affects the body because it goes against the body’s natural clock. The good news is that these health risks can be minimised and there are also ways to support the body in feeling healthy when performing shift work.

• B vitamins, magnesium and antioxidants are kept at peak levels • Smoking and alcohol are either kept to a minimum or eliminated completely • Adrenal and stress support supplements are taken

Night shift workers often run against their natural circadian (body clock) rhythm. Scientists have found this to be hazardous to one’s health, putting shift workers at greater risk of the following health and lifestyle concerns:

Many people on shift work turn to energy drinks, caffeine and cigarettes to boost energy, however these products give a quick but damaging fix to keep people awake and alert. Phamaceutical sleeping aids are overly prescribed and use of these can lead to dependency and serious health problems.

• Obesity • Cardiovascular disease, (high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack) • Mood and emotional upset, including depression, anxiety and increased occurrences of anger • Digestive problems and irritable bowels • Higher risk of motor vehicle accidents • Increased risk of family tension and relationship breakdowns Shift workers who are on a rotation of 3-7 days can create further instability. Research has shown it takes 10 days for the body to completely adjust from a 12-hour night shift to regular daytime hours or days off. Most shift workers simply do not have the time off to allow their body to get back into rhythm again. But all hope is not lost! There are ways that shift workers can ensure they give themselves the best chance at better health. The human body can adapt to the stresses of shift work when; • A healthy diet is consumed, helping to keep vitamin and mineral levels high

If shift work is affecting you or your partners’ health, you might want to consider speaking to a naturopath. Natural supplements have proven to be a potent and effective method of assisting the body with the pressures of shift work, over work or changes in one’s circadian rhythm. We are excited by the great results our clients have been experiencing here at the clinic. The Whitsunday Health Clinic has a number of different testing procedures to help find solutions for fatigue, mood and emotional disturbances and digestive disorders when shift work is involved. Advice on diet and supplements is given with the best understanding of the needs and lifestyle of shift and mine workers.

With the right advice and supplements, keeping or correcting one’s health is simple and easy.

THE RIGHT TAC, Think of Whitsunday Sailing Club and you will think of Airlie Beach Race Week, the iconic Whitsunday regatta that brings so many sailors here every year. Cold beers, sunset-soaked daiquiris, or dinners on the verandah of the relaxing beachside oasis at Airlie Point also comes to mind! What you may not think of, is the exceptional team of junior (under 15) sailors who call this home. Mentored by Klaus Lorenz, their 16-yearold coach, Whitsunday Optimist Sailing Team (WOST) members are reckoned to be among the best junior sailors in Australia and, at the International Optimist National regatta to be held in Hobart in January, they aim to prove it. Sailing against 200-odd competitors from around Australia, team members currently hold several State Titles and all are being primed to finish in the Top 25 of the fleet. Klaus’ sailing career began in 2004 soon after his family arrived in Airlie Beach. Initially sailing a Sabot class dinghy, Klaus competed in three national championships before switching to the International Optimist, winning several titles in Australia and also representing Australia in New Zealand and Thailand. Klaus aged out of the Optimist class in 2011, and having found his ideal crew, Ollie Annear, he began a new phase. The pair race in ‘Drag Queen’, an International 420 youth class dinghy designed to prepare teenage sailors for the adult Olympic 470 class. “Team Drag Queen Racing”, as the team is known, has already made its mark, winning the OAMPS Queensland Youth Championship regatta in July. This was the first stage of a campaign to win the “Yachting Australia Youth Grand Prix”, a 6-regatta touring circuit with events in Brisbane, Belmont, Melbourne, Sydney, and concluding with the International 420 and Australian Youth National regattas in Hobart in January. They are working hard to be selected as Australia’s 420 representatives at the Youth Worlds scheduled for Cyprus in July 2013, during a season in Europe, where the competition is greatest. 36 • www.coremag.com.au

This kind of campaign is a very major undertaking for anyone but, with careful planning and some support, is very achievable from the team’s base at Airlie Beach. “Airlie Beach is a fantastic place to sail,” says Klaus. “We can train almost every day by just getting off the school bus one stop early. We keep our training boat on the lawn at the sailing club, so we just put on our gear and go. They can’t do that in Brisbane!” The ease with which Klaus, Ollie, and the WOST team can go sailing plays a major part in their success. It all adds up to ‘time on the water’, an essential ingredient of competitive sailing. Klaus and Ollie are members of the Queensland Sailing Development Squad. The squad is based in Brisbane where they keep their competition boat and where squad members get together every 4-6 weeks for coaching. The pair flies down after school on Friday, catching the ‘redeye’ back to Proserpine on Monday morning in time for school. At home, Klaus and Ollie sail 4-6 times each week, as well as maintaining a strenuous fitness programme. They are also both heavily involved in the training and mentoring of local junior sailors, Ollie as an instructor in the club’s learn-to-sail programme, and Klaus as the WOST coach. Klaus has

also coached the juniors at Honiara’s Point Cruz Yacht Club, where he will return for a week in October. “I want to become Australia’s best Optimist coach and to coach the Australian team going to the Optimist Worlds in 2014 or 2015, so I take every opportunity to practice my coaching skills,” says Klaus. As coach, Klaus puts ‘his’ sailors through their paces every Sunday morning during school terms, and runs occasional weekend camps. Members of Whitsunday Sailing Club have been very generous in their support of both teams, providing them with grants towards travel costs. On October 28th, the club will be hosting a ‘Gala Auction’ of locally donated items to raise funds to help with the cost of the team’s travel to their respective Tasmanian regattas. The organisers hope to attract a large number of potential buyers who will be able to meet the team.

Cruise Whitsundays makes travel easy and affordable after Fantasea Cruises withdrew from the region. CORE spoke with CHRIS JACOBS, director of Cruise Whitsundays, about more routes, lower fares and attracting international attention. On Tuesday 17 July 2012, there were twice as many passengers travelling with Cruise Whitsundays. After competitor Fantasea Cruises abandoned ship, Cruise Whitsundays welcomed residents and tourists to their expanded fleet of vessels and pontoons. “Eight years ago, the region looked like it would be big enough for two operations,” said director Chris Jacobs. “But with tourism declining in Queensland and the Whitsundays, it became clear that the region could only successfully support one large operator.” After discussion with Fantasea Cruises over a number of years, Cruise Whitsundays purchased the operation. “We needed to make our business viable so we decided to acquire Fantasea,” said Chris. Together with business partner Roger Dold, Chris owns Cruise Whitsundays. From the directors to the ticket takers, everyone at Cruise Whitsundays was affected by the acquisition of Fantasea Cruises. “The staff were delighted to know that we were moving forward,” said Chris. “They knew it had been a tough time for the industry. Last year we had two cyclones as well as floods, which added to the negative impact of fewer tourists.” Carrying a significant increase of passengers has been a learning curve for Cruise Whitsundays. “We’ve been tweaking operations over the past two months to improve our services, alter our schedules and add more services as needed,” said Chris. While the decade-long decline in regional tourism has claimed another business, there’s a silver lining. Now that Cruise Whitsundays has taken over the long-term contract previously held by Fantasea Cruises with Hamilton Island, passengers can travel between the popular destination and Airlie Beach with greater ease. “Bringing Hamilton Island into a closer relationship with Airlie Beach and the other islands was the most important part of the transaction,” said Chris.

Now as the sole operator in the region, Cruise Whitsundays increases accessibility to all Whitsunday islands. “With the integration of the businesses, guests can travel to Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Long Island, Whitehaven Beach and the mainland with ease, which is something they weren’t able to do before,” said Chris. The company will soon introduce new tours including a wider range of half-day outings. While their full-day tours to the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach are popular, Chris said that some guests prefer shorter excursions. With sales staff in the UK, Europe and every Eastern Australian and New Zealand capital city, Cruise Whitsundays is going all the way to promote the region and their business.

First we have to promote the Whitsundays and then we can talk about our products. Our biggest task in the long term is to get more visitors here said Chris. Currently serving as Tourism Whitsundays Board Chairman, Chris takes pride in supporting the community he promotes. Cruise Whitsundays regularly sponsors local schools and community groups including Ecobarge Clean Seas Inc run by local Libby Edge. Cruise Whitsundays recently employed 50+ staff formerly employed by Fantasea across sales, on the vessels and in the maintenance division. With 130 staff, Cruise Whitsundays carries over half a million passengers every year on day cruises and transfers between islands.

If you have a sense of adventure, a love of nature and the desire to drop out of the rat race for a long weekend break or even a week or two, then your Queensland Yacht Charters floating home awaits you! Come and enjoy your own backyard and explore the 74 islands of the Whitsundays on your own charter boat. QYC are specialists at organising your fishing trip with mates, family time on the water or a romantic getaway. There is nowhere else where you can play a game of beach cricket on the squeaky white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach, indulge in a few beers, back slapping and story telling with mates and eat your freshly caught Coral Trout or Spanish Mackerel, cooked on the boat BBQ whilst watching a fiery sunset! It’s an awesome experience and one to be shared. The Queensland Yacht Charter fleet has 28 vessels, consisting of power boats, sailing monohulls and catamarans. The boats will sleep from 2 people up to 10 and are fully equipped with all bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery, safety gear, navigational instruments and charts (including a GPS/ Plotter) and some vessels have fish finders. You will also find a good stereo system on board for your tunes – just bring the MP3 player and perhaps your favourite DVD’s.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY SAILING EXPERIENCE? We have a choice of power boats or sailing boats. We also have the option of a half day sailguide who will take you through the basic sailing processes and give hands on tuition of your vessel. You can make the choice then to try your hand at some sailing or simply motor around. No formal qualifications are required. Hiring a boat from Queensland Yacht Charters is as easy as a phone call to their sales team. Just advise us of your dates and numbers of people on board and the hard work will be done for you. To borrow an old phrase...but wait there’s more… all your food and beverages can be provided at a reasonable cost and placed on board for you to make your getaway even easier. This means that you can literally step aboard the 42 • www.coremag.com.au

boat, have your briefing and be heading out to one of the many stunning anchorages in the Whitsundays in no time at all. Some of the most popular anchorages are Nara Inlet - well known for its Aboriginal art and stunning waterfalls after the rain, Langford Reef for its wonderful sand spit which disappears as the tide rises, Butterfly Bay for its amazing snorkelling amongst the marine life and colourful corals, Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island to experience a resort, Gulnare Inlet (mudcrab and oysters anyone?) and many, many more. Boating in the Whitsundays is year round. Summers are warm with frequent rain showers between December-March. Winters are said by many to be the perfect climate: dry and warm by day and cool by night. July is the coolest month and January/February is the warmest. July/ August is also an exciting time as it’s whale watching season.

The Whitsunday Moto Sports Club has hit a high this year with their new Moto Sport and Driver Training facility given the Australian Supermoto titles for next year’s event. Andrew Auld, the President of the Whitsunday Moto Sports Club says the newly built track is something to be proud of amongst the Moto world and an achievement of the community. If landing a massive Moto sports event, the Australian titles wasn’t enough, the Whitsunday Club has also received news their track will lay host to the Queensland Go-Kart Titles next year.

This particular track has an advantage over others with its location; it’s so far away from the township, noise and pollution are not a problem. With the track being one of the few in our country that meets all national standards for motorcycle and go-kart professional race events, already the track has seen some major events such as the second round of the Supermoto Titles and the Great Barrier Reef Go-Kart Titles. “September brought the Mackay and District Drift Club’s Matsuri weekend for two days and one night of drifting, so already the track is attracting a variety of Moto sports and demonstrates its versatility.” The driver training facilities has attracted the attention of Federal MP George Christensen, whose interest and support may lead to further Government Grants facilitating the construction of a new two storey classroom with a large viewing room.

community that I would call heroes, plus a lot of people have helped in the development of the track as well.” As much as Andrew prefers not to take credit for the track, let’s just say that with his help to secure the initial grant from Motorcycle Queensland, they were also able obtain $200,000 from local Council plus $300,000 from the State’s Sports and Recreation Department. “We were able to get help from a lot of other local business who donated machinery and materials to aid the construction.” “The nearest driver training set up like the one we have here is at Gympie, which makes the place significantly beneficial for our community and surrounding areas.” With night-lights and a classroom marking the cherries on this SuperMoto track, plans are currently in place to begin open track days allowing anyone with a road-registered bike to have a run on the track. Hopefully by August next year, we should all see the track cut, polished and completed just in time for the Supermoto titles, making this all-round track one of the best facilities Australia has to offer.

“We’re only about $800,000 away from completion with lights and covered pit area to be installed, but even now it still gets used just about every weekend.” The track has come along way since the idea was sparked in 2005 by a few local Moto sports enthusiasts who were able to secure the land, but it’s plans came to a halt once the amalgamation of Councils came into play in 2008. “That’s about the time I picked up the ball and after a lot of chasing, I managed to get Motorcycle Queensland on board who awarded a Grant of $80,000 for the construction of the track.” A motorcycle mechanic by trade and all round Moto sports enthusiast, Andrew’s part in the development of the track has not gone unnoticed; winning the Community Heroes Award for his efforts. As proud of the track he might be, Andrew remains incredibly humbled by the accolade and insists on the recognition of the club as a whole, rather then his individual involvement. “It is an honour, but there’s so many other deserving people in our

Being able to combine the two so harmoniously is a talent Tim has, with dishes such as beefalo eye fillet wrapped in Berkshire bacon with a zucchini tomato Jap pumpkin stack. Beefalo you say? Within 100 miles of Airlie Beach is a farm where they actually breed American buffalo with the domestic cows to create the succulent lean meat they have affectionately dubbed “Beefalo”. You can also meet the spoilt piggies rolling around in the mud who will later be joined by the Beefalo on your dinner plate that night.

Family Friendly Fun! Nothing beats the relief of finding a kid-friendly restaurant, where the whole family can enjoy activities and the menu prices won’t empty the pocket. If you’re looking for somewhere that offers everything from oven-fired pizza, char-grilled steaks, a salad bar and succulent pasta dishes plus everything in between, then you’ll definitely find what you’re after! The Whitsundays have an array of family friendly restaurants scattered around the place.

CORE’s number 1 must-stop restaurant is:

Reef Gateway Hotel in Cannonvale. With kids meals priced to please all parents, you even have the option to include vegetables (good for a bit of parental bribery), after all, you have to make good use of the free kids dessert offer with each kids meal! The kids room and outdoor play area are sure to be a winner with the kid-lets and rug-rats. With plenty of arcade games indoors, leading out to the shaded outdoor playground, the kids will work up an appetite whilst parents can enjoy a bit of peace and quiet before sitting down to a hearty family meal.

With the weather warming up, why not pack the swimmers and towels for the family and enjoy a splash in the pool? Surrounded with plenty of undercover seating, you can enjoy this space in rain, hail or shine. Plus, don’t worry dad’s, there are a couple of plasmas out there to keep you up to date with the latest in live sporting action whilst still enjoying an afternoon of quality family time. PICK OF THE MONTH 1 Löwenbräu translates to ‘lions brew’ and is brewed under German Purity Law. This all-natural beer is fully balanced with a dry but crisp, bitter undertone. Clean, smooth and perfectly structured.

BOTTLE TOP RATING

This iconic German wheat beer delivers typical flavours of cloves and spices with a hint of banana. Fantastically full bodied, a nice lemon zest comes through on the back palate to refresh the taste.

HOFBRÄU OKTOBERFEST

This lager pours a golden colour and is perfectly clear. It also has a healthy white head. There is a slight malt sweetness in there, but not much else. The shining star for this beer is the nice bready ending that offers something to the beer.

A pale straw-coloured beer, with just a light amount of haze, which is topped by a large white head as the beer glugs out of the bottle. The nose has some bready, sweet malt, and a dash of lemon zest is thrown in for good measure - your mouth will be light with a crisp finish.

It’s hard to believe that 21-year-old SKYE DIPROSE only got into modelling in January this year. What made you consider modelling as a career? I seriously had never ever even thought about modelling until after getting out of a six year relationship and people started giving me attention and suggesting the idea of trying modelling out, otherwise I would have never thought of the possibility. You were a runner up in Mackay’s Sexiest Bunny competition and were also a finalist in the Australian Swimsuit Competition. Are these comps typically fun, or a lot of competition? The Mackay’s Sexiest Bunny comp was a lot of fun and that’s where I actually met Kelly Aplin from Maiden Ink who was judging at the competition. After the comp I went on to get my tattoos designed and done by Mick Aplin. They are great tatts! Have you found they make finding work difficult? Not at all, I absolutely love them and am planning more. They haven’t hindered my modelling career at all; they’ve boosted it in some ways, I’ve actually gotten job offers because of them. When did you win your first competition? The ‘Sexiest Bunny’ competition was where I got my first sash so I was quite chuffed about that, I think I would have gone well in the swimsuit competition but I

just couldn’t make it as my bub Sophia got a little sick over the judging weekend. So you’re currently juggling a modelling career and a 20 month old toddler. Do you think good genetics are on your side? I guess I was just one of those lucky ones, my body bounced right back literally four weeks after having Sophia. Are you worried about the concept of being a single mum and a model? Not really – it does get easier as time goes on. You’ve also been accepted into the Miss Galaxy Australia Competition 2013, which has the potential to catapult your career. Are you excited? It is a bit daunting but I know that you’ve just got to give it a go, there’s nothing to lose if I enter but everything to gain. So what’s next for you? I absolutely love Mackay and the Whitsundays, but to take modelling to the next step and turn it into a serious career, I’ll probably need to be city-based. Eventually, I’ll be moving to the Gold Coast to further my career.

It’s a great time to purchase an investment property in the Whitsunday Region. Not only are you buying in one of the most beautiful regions in Australia, you would be buying at a great time. The property cycle “clock” has hit its bottom and is starting to move up so we are seeing the most affordable prices for homes right now, and we can be pretty certain they are only going to increase from here. In the last three months we have seen a run on vacant land and we, at PRD Whitsunday, have sold more blocks of land in the last two months than we have sold in the entire 12 months prior combined. The builders are aware that the housing market has hit the bottom and is starting to climb again, so they are getting their house and land packages ready. Rent prices have increased over 15% in the past six months, whilst the median house price has stayed stagnant during the same time. In effect, you can purchase a new four bedroom house and land package in Jubilee Pocket for $399,000 and turn around and rent it out for around $520+ per week. It does not take a genius to work out that this is a very low risk investment opportunity. The exception to the growth rule would be holiday units. Due to the downturn in domestic tourism over the past 18 months, combined with the property bubble burst, holiday unit values have corrected themselves and, in some cases, dropped over 40% in value. We are starting to see the end of the decline and prices are levelling out but we have a two year supply on the market to get through before we see movement. However, if you’re a long term investor (which in real practice we all should be) there are some great purchase opportunities in the holiday unit market which should show excellent three and five year average annual growth. This

market has grown on average 7% per annum over the past 10 years, so with a little research and some good planning, you can pick up a great investments for your portfolio (and a great place to have a free holiday in the Whitsundays). Not sure if you would qualify as an investor? Well consider the following: • About 66% of Australians own their own or are paying off their own home. • The value of that home is usually above $550,000 • They owe around $250,000 on their mortgage • They earn on average $75,000 - $100,000 per annum as a household before tax • They pay around $18,000-$24,000 per annum in tax This average Australian would be able to make an investment purchase to the extent of $300,000 - $450,000 without a deposit. This would reduce their tax outlay considerably and would cost them only a minimal outlay if anything at all. To find out more about what are the best investments available in the Whitsunday region, please contact me on: 0448 601 694 or via e-mail at kellimedford@prd.com.au Until next month – Kelli Medford – Your property investment specialist.

1st Home Owners Grant Applies

It’s a well-known fact that property is arguably the best long-term investment that you can make. 30 years ago, Raoul Daniel began his career in the construction industry, five years later he began building homes, he had 12 very successful years building multi-million dollar homes in the exclusive Golf Resorts of Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. Moving to Airlie Beach in 2008, Raoul began designing and building homes in Airlie Retreat Estate, Jubilee Pocket, releasing stages 1 and 2 and building over 25 quality homes. He then went on to release house and land packages in Mountain Breeze Estate in Cannonvale, of which he has only six remaining. All homes built reflect the same qualities and craftsmanship and Raoul has well and truly established himself as the quality builder of the area. Raoul has been a member of Queensland Master Builders for 15 years and strongly believes in providing the best possible product, regardless of the value. Complete customer satisfaction is the key to success.

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL ESTATE AARDEE’S PRESTIGE HOMES OF DISTINCTION

Raoul Daniels Aardee’s Prestige Homes of Distinction have enjoyed exceptional success in Mountain Breeze Estate in building over 25 homes. Raoul’s attention to detail and quality inclusions have appealed to buyers. He has personally designed homes to suit the purchasers’ needs including media rooms, offices, large patios, and most importantly creating spaces to securely park boats on the allotments. Raoul takes pride in the product he produces from start to finish. This includes 600mm deep footings, block walls fully re-enforced with steel and completely filled with concrete. The block walls are battened on the inside before lining to prevent moisture from entering the house. He only uses 90mm timber framing. All of his fittings and fixtures are to the same standard used on the $2million - $4million homes proudly built by Raoul in Sanctuary Cove. Raoul believes everyone’s home is their life savings and he makes it the best possible. Selling agent Robyn Tyson said “Raoul has an ability to design and build to meet the needs of each purchaser as shown in the variety of home designs that have been established.” Priced from $425,000 - Contact Agent for house plans, building specs and further information.

With complete services including floor and wall tile selections, cabinetry and benchtops, carpet selections, interior/exterior paints, exterior finishes, plain take offs, schedule of finishes and a tilers schedule on offer, it’s no wonder Metro Tiles will inspire a look that’s uniquely yours. CORE catches up with Rebecca from Metro Tiles… What makes Metro Tiles different from other flooring stores? Our focus is on tiles - it’s what we do. The majority of our range is exclusive to Metro Tiles, which gives us an edge on our competitors. Many other stores combine different flooring products in the one showroom, but by focusing exclusively on tiles, we are able to provide our clients with the best advice, service and product knowledge. When you visit Metro Tiles, what can you expect? An extensive range of beautiful wall and floor tiles, professional friendly customer service and a well presented modern boutique showroom. It doesn’t matter whether you’re buying a single tile or 1000m2, everybody is treated with the same importance. Tell us about the collection of different tiles you have on offer… We have some truly fantastic tiles in our showroom and the selection seems never ending. It’s always a pleasant surprise for our clients when they walk in the door. We supply a wide range of ceramic and porcelain tiles, glass mosaics and natural stone, matching internal and external tiles, funky feature tiles, gloss, matt and textured tiles, there are too many to mention. Why did you feel the Whitsundays had the need for something a little different when it came to tiles? We have been in the area for nearly 16 years, and over that time, watching the town progress, we saw an opportunity to bring a little bit of the city to the country and give people something that they normally wouldn’t experience unless they were in the big smoke; modern unique tiles. The Whitsundays needed to move with the times. What are some dos and don’ts when it comes to flooring and design? Do - start from the bottom up (floor). When you start by choosing your tiles first, it gives you a much wider selection to work with and then everything else will flow from there. Don’t – settle for second best! Choose what you love rather than something you just like. If it’s only a matter of a couple of dollars and you will be much happier when you’re looking at it every day, then go for it! You also have a comprehensive interior/exterior design service – what can we expect with this? It’s a one-stop shop; clients spend a few hours with our in-house interior designer Tania, and walk away with their whole house selection completed. Everything is here in our design hub, so there is no need to go anywhere else. As well as tiles, Tania will also help clients with laminate and stone selections, internal/external paint colours, roof /gutters and even carpet. We can do as much or as little as you require.

Training Co-ordinator for Hastings Deering We all know that Hastings Deering in Mackay certainly keep themselves busy between international and home soil mining dealings, community projects, charity sponsorships and fundraisers. Over the last few months CORE has managed to get to know some of the company’s hard working and dedicated employees. Now it’s Carla’s turn. Her face might very well be one of the first faces you’ll get to know at Hastings if you land yourself a position within the company, or even one of the many mining companies that they contract to. Carla is apart of the ever growing and high demand field of training, within the Mackay branch. Being one of Hastings Training Co-ordinators, it is her responsibility to organise safety and CAT specific training for Hastings Deering staff and apprentices as well as clients, which include BMA, Rio Tinto, Emeco and other providers around our area. Handling the role for 18 months now, Carla is well acquainted with operating workplace education from her days with the training RTO for the SES, with a background in disaster management. Taking her background into consideration, it’s easy to see why she might not feel intimidated entering the mining arena, which as the general consensus goes, is a man’s world. “Working within disasters pretty much exposes you to the worst that can happen, so I’m usually well prepared and know how to keep my composure under pressure.” “Of course it’s not a walk in the park, I’m responsible for organising the training of 700 employees who are based at Moranbah, Dysart, Coalfields and Mackay.”

I love working for Hastings because of their support, interest and commitment to training their employees and clients. Because of this commitment, the budget for training is not something that is cut short. “The feedback I get back for our training programs is always uplifting and positive. I’ve had clients and others who have attended our courses and come back to thank me. They love that Hastings are so committed to their product and their people.” Apprentice Bootcamp was something that came up in conversation, which makes the eyebrows twist with confusion at first before lifting to a raise with admiration. Apparently Bootcamp is a new term penned to 60 • www.coremag.com.au

describe hardcore training and preparation for noobs into the mining world which is twelve weeks to be precise, and includes the Caterpillar specific training, basic engines, safety, first aid and even financial planning. All the things you basically may need when starting out in a workshop or your first job. “This training is done before they can set foot into the workshops. We make sure they’re 100% prepared for the workplace, giving them industry skills, but also giving them life skills as some apprentices are 16 or 17 and have never had a job before.” “The whole concept of Bootcamp was designed and developed in Mackay, and we’ve just started to role it out within the other branches in Hastings.” Special training is not reserved solely for the apprentices of course, Carla’s team has also developed an onboard training day for new staff just starting including a tour with the policies and procedures fully explained so they don’t have any of those first week mishaps, as well as special induction training for any skilled international employees who may come in to help out. Growing up in Blackwater, her father was an open cut examiner for BMA and Carla is no stranger to the mining world. But things are always bigger than what they appear once you enter in on a career path. “I had to get my head around all the machines and it’s such a large organisation. Who to go to for what things is difficult to learn when you first start out.” But after a few short months, she became confident and more than competent within her training coordination. She organises up to six training sessions a week including key speakers from the Mater Foundation to come and speak to their employees about health concerns, including prostate cancer. “We’re extremely active in fundraising, our Social Club was able to raise $100,000 for the community at the last black tie ball by auctioning off sporting memorabilia. It’s these sort of extra branches of the company which makes it that much more enjoyable to be a part of.”

Active Active ... ... in in the the City! City! Have Have fun fun and and get get fit fit in in the the Mackay Mackay City City Centre! Centre! Carla enjoys being part of the team, she assisted apprentices with applications for the CQ Training Awards, who are now off to the State Championships as well as nominating some of her managers for the AIM Managers Awards, who also made it to the finals. Carla trains horses and riders in her spare time, she has been involved with Pony Club and the Equestrian Federation of Australia for 24 years. This led her overseas to compete in 2004 and 2005 in America and Ireland with many wins and fantastic experiences working with Olympians such as Lucinda Green (UK) and Cian O’Connor (Ire). She has been riding in A grade showjumping competitions for 10 years which means competing in the same events as men at heights of 130cm and above. Horses are graded on their wins, and Carla regularly has to compete against Olympians and professionals. ‘We are a long way from the large competitions in the South East, I enjoy the local shows west of Mackay and usually go on a show run for four weeks a year to train a small team of horses. The highlights of my riding career are selling a young horse I had trained to Korea, winning the Rockhampton Show high jump at 6 foot 11 inches and winning a $1000 mini prix showjumping class in North Carolina. Show Me the Money is 21 years old and still winning, he won a World Cup Competition at the Gold Coast in 2004 while I was overseas.’

People come to watch two male camels wrestle each other over a female. Often the sport is more humorous than vicious, as camels are not great wrestlers. They even have been known to become disinterested and walk away.

BEING THE BIGGEST COMES WITH THE TERRITORY. When you look after a dealer territory half the size of mainland USA, you need to be equipped for some pretty big things. While it takes 23 branches and over 4,200 staff to manage our 5,632,704 km2 dealer network, the biggest thing about the Hastings Deering Group isn’t actually our geographical size. It’s more the fact we stock over 278,000 individual line items, sold over 4.8 million line items last year, have a new parts inventory in excess of A$125 million, and supply over 95% of our orders within 24 hours. Plus it’s the strength of the additional resources we have on hand through Caterpillar in Australia - including their A$400 million-worth of parts inventories, and Hastings Deering specialist staff and equipment such as 446 Service Vehicles, 46 Crane Trucks, 12 Hose Vans and 16 Preventive Maintenance Trucks. While we’re proud of being the biggest, the most important thing to us is offering you the sales, service and support you need - whenever and wherever you need it. After all, being the biggest is nothing without being the best.
