From the

Editor

Waking up this morning to the usual grizzly cry of my 13-month-old baby, I look over and see him sitting bolt upright in his cot. I am used to this by now as he is older and more mobile but there is still something a little spooky about a baby sitting bolt upright, staring at you from behind the bars of his cot when it is still almost dark. Even though it is 5.30am and I don’t have to be up for at least an hour, I pull him up and bring him into the bed. He sits bolt upright, as is his way these days, and turns his head, beaming at me with his big smile. It got me thinking; we could be anywhere in the world right now and his smile would make me feel like I had come home. The sense of ‘home’ is an interesting concept that we explore in our Home, Property and Garden feature this issue. Our physical homes are our sanctuaries; their features and style are extensions of us, reflecting our personalities and our tastes. Yet, there is more to a feeling of home than a physical abode. It can also be a feeling of ‘coming home’, a feeling of being at peace or ‘at one’ with the world we get from being with someone we love.

On another level, the feeling of home could be about finding your place in the world, knowing that you are exactly where you are meant to be, doing exactly what you want to be doing. This is a feeling I have every day working for Core Life Magazine. Not only do I love being part of a team that brings a brilliant publication to life, I also love creating a platform for the community to share a voice. We profile so many members of our community in this issue and it is a pleasure to include many people who would not normally put themselves out there! Lastly, the feeling of ‘home’ is also about finding your ‘people’, your ‘tribe’. These are people that just ‘get you’. They are the people you can laugh and cry with, be goofy or moody and know they’ve got your back. I have found my ‘tribe’ at Core Life and in this issue it has been an honour to celebrate other local ‘tribes’ with our Friends in Business theme. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you!

That will teach you to keep your mouth shut. Ernest Hemingway Tell Us Something most people don't know about you? I am a mum of 4 incredible kids. When Dawn travelled to Australia in 1999 and never caught the return flight home, she never knew that life would lead her to permanently settling in the Whitsundays. Originally from Canada, Dawn adored Australia from the moment she arrived. “I feel very blessed to be able to raise my family in such a beautiful country,” she said. For many years Dawn lived in Byron Bay where she brought up her four children; Olivia 18, Hayden 16, Jackman 14 and Alessandra 12. The family then decided to venture north, making their way up the coast and choosing to settle in Airlie Beach. In her spare-time Dawn loves to ‘run and ride’, although she confesses, she’s not a great swimmer. “Growing up in Canada, we focused on indoor team sports like basketball and volleyball and winter sports like ice hockey. Swimming was something I never in my radar!” As a result, she loves to run and cycle with the Whitsunday Triathlon Club and does really well at those disciplines but always struggles with swimming. On a professional level, Dawn has recently joined the management ream at Abell Point Marina. Her role is running Events and Functions as well as recently adding Hemingway’s management to her responsibilities. “It’s a challenge but I always enjoy one and I am very fortunate to be welcomed into the incredible team here at Abell Point Marina.” www.corelife.com.au 14 14 www.corelife.com.au

When Narelle and her husband Stewy decided to look for a quieter pace of life, the Whitsunday area seemed like the perfect choice. After the bright lights and busy life-style of the Gold Coast, Airlie Beach certainly offered a complete change. It is a sanctuary, somewhere for them to embrace life’s simple pursuits. “We really enjoy boating, snorkelling, socialising with my great friends and spending time as a family,” said Narelle. Narelle and Stewy have beautiful twin daughters; Meika and Liv who infuse their lives with light and laughter. The couple also own Whitsunday Marble and Granite which is an award winning local company that specialise in transforming stone and marble into unique pieces for your home. One of Narelle’s favourite experiences is travelling the world and she loves to venture to new places, trying to never visit the same place twice. “I love travelling overseas but would always rather a new destination over returning to the same area. In 2019 we are going to Italy, I can’t wait!”

This is where Claire from cmgraphics likes to assist. She offers the passion, professionalism and personal touch that other small businesses value and respect. With over twenty years experience, Claire started her career in Sydney working for an advertising agency and then a large publishing house. Since then she has lived in rural areas and developed her passion for working with smaller printeries and rural publications. “I started in the industry at the age of 19, working in advertising, publishing, printing, signage and later web design. More recently I have worked with small business to provide a broad range of solutions for their marketing needs. THE TOP 3 QUESTIONS I AM ASKED ARE... 1. Why do I need a website when I have a FB page?

For starters you do not own your FB page, but you do own your website which gives you complete control over your entire brand. Facebook on the other hard you are dealing with their terms of service, and run the risk of your page, group or profile being shut down. You can design your website to match your brand. Having a website to host all your content, contacts and funnels is critical. A website doesn’t have to cost you a fortune from under $10 a month you can piece of mind and security over your IP.

2. Where should I be promoting my services and how do I do it?

ONLINE BUSINESS DESIGN with Jasmine Kratz

My passion for supporting people and seeing them succeed is what gets me out of bed every day. I enjoy the challenge of delivering systems and tools for our clients and creating a place for them to share their brand and their message with the world. Find where your ideal client is hanging out and that’s where you need to show up. If they are on pinterest boards but you are marketing on LinkedIn then you are not going to have the impact you want.

3. What if I am no good at the tech stuff and don’t want to spend a fortune and have lots of different programs to learn or pay for?

My clients come to me because they want a solution that is going to be cost effective and easy to update and manage long term. I see too many people that have a beautiful website – aka their piece of online real estate but never log in and tweak, update, create new content or use it to its full potential. What we create is much more that a webpage, we create online marketing hubs that are visually appealing, mobile friendly, SEO optimised and secure. You get all your email marketing, conferencing, scheduling, funnels, events management, Customer relationship database management, membership platform, full ecommerce website and social channel integrations all for the one low fee. The best bit is we meet you where you are at, so if you aren’t ready for all that just yet and want a small brochure site up and running in a few days we can assist and then introduce new features as your business grows. Therefore you don’t have features and costs you don’t need when you are just getting started. But for the more advanced business that is ready to take their marketing to new heights and are ready to have more time, less headaches, happier customers who feel loved and more Impact in your niche then we have soured experts in their field to bring you an allinclusive service with copyrighting, brand and logo design, photography, content marketing and visibility strategies. ENEMIES IN BUSINESS THE LAST THING ‘FRIENDS IN BUSINESS’ TOGETHER WANT IS TO END UP ‘ENEMIES IN BUSINESS’ TOGETHER. Lots of friends and relatives go into business together. It makes sense, we both have a similar passion, we get on well and think alike so why not buy a business together. Amidst all the excitement of buying or starting a new business from scratch don’t forget to spend some time playing Devil’s Advocate. Think through the scenario if something goes wrong. This could be something totally out of your control like a natural disaster, change in lifestyle, sickness or accident. What becomes important then are: Who is owed what and who owns what? How do we cover outstanding bills and entitlements? What happens if one needs to sell but the

other doesn’t? What do we do if we have a major disagreement about something? Spending some time working through these issues so everyone understands each other’s expectations and preferences is important. Ideally it should be written down and could even require a formal Partnership Agreement drafted by a solicitor. Key issues like who contributed what to the business should be spelled out to accountants, so they are correctly recorded. If a concern is a key person to the business dying or being disabled, there are ways to protect against that. You can establish insurance policies over each other to provide PMS 2768 funds in the event of Death, Disability c 100 | m 90 | y13 | k61

or Major Medical Trauma. These funds can used be to employ replacements, compensate for lost profits, repay debts and provide funds to buy exiting partners out. Like all the big ventures in life we proceed because we think it will work. Spending a little time working through what happens if things don’t go according to plan while everyone is happy, is much easier than trying to unscramble the egg under pressure. McDonalds AIRLIE BEACH

F

rom humble beginnings in the US in 1955 to its global position today in 118 countries across the world, McDonalds has continued to re-invent itself, bringing healthier, fresher options to the menu as well as sticking to the fan favourite; burgers and fries. But above all there is one great lesson every business owner can learn from the McDonalds franchise, and that’s people. People drive your business, whether it’s responding to customer demand, looking after your employees with development and career opportunities, or looking out for those vulnerable in your local community. Airlie Beach McDonalds Franchise Owner, Michael Muller, has kept these core values at the forefront of his business. This year, the Airlie store celebrates 20 years in business, and Mike shares an insight into what it takes to be a McSuccess. “What has kept me engaged and inspired to stay in this business for as long as I have, has been watching and working with the young people of our community. I often joke that both the best and worst part of my job is people. However, the rewards I get from watching our young staff grow and develop into highly professional men and women always outweighs the negatives of the occasional days when people let me down. “Mentoring the people around me has been the most rewarding experience of my life so far.” www.corelife.com.au 22 22 www.corelife.com.au

Making a Franchise McFlourish The Maccas dream started for Mike and his wife, Jane, in 1993 when they went on a drive holiday to the snow with three families.

two years with hardly a day off until we had built enough experience in our management team to start developing managers into these positions.

“We had 11 children on the journey and everywhere we went, the children always wanted to go to ‘Maccas.’ Every time we visited a McDonalds we were impressed with how busy the restaurants were and how they operated during those very busy periods,” Mike said.

“That, without doubt, was the hardest period of my life. Luckily my wife Jane and our family provided unwavering strong support. Success starts with the selection of people. You cannot develop a great team unless you know how to do every role in the business and lead by example in everything you do.”

Three years later, the opportunity presented itself for Mike to become an operator, and his first store opened two years later. It was the start of one of the toughest periods of his life, but one which reaped greater rewards in the years to follow. He opened his next McDonalds in Bowen in 2009 followed by Cannonvale in 2010. “Without doubt, the initial period before and after opening each restaurant have always been the hardest. “When Jane and I opened Airlie Beach McDonalds in 1998 I wore several hats. “Restaurant Manager, Rostering Manager, Hiring Manager, Product Ordering Manager, Delivery Manager, Book Keeper and I also worked running shifts every week. I did this for the first

McDonalds has adapted to the changing tastes of its customers more than any other fast-food chain. Its adaptation to trends is one of the reasons it has remained at the forefront of family favourites for many decades. When Mike and Jane opened their Airlie Beach restaurant, they only had five core menu products and one ‘promo’ product that went for around four weeks. Mike explains that the introduction of the ‘Made for you’ menu which introduced items that were cooked-to-order brought the start of big changes. “This enabled us to broaden our range of products and the quality of the products being used improved as well. There was an emphasis on fresh as well as fast. In 2016 we introduced

the ‘Create your Taste’ range which has now been re-named and revamped to be available in Drive-thru as ‘Gourmet Creations.’ We never stop evolving and creating new products and promotions to keep our brand relevant and to keep delighting our customers.” When it comes to giving to the community, Mike is a man who likes to say yes. His generosity can be attested to by hundreds of local sporting and charitable organisations who have received many generous donations over the years. While there have been many McHappy Days and community events, Mike’s favourites have been the Ronald McDonald House Balls, raising money for the Townsville Ronald McDonald House. “These events have been totally driven by the great people on the Ronald McDonald House committee in Airlie Beach. All credit goes to them, which includes Jaide, Courtney, Russ and many of the staff who work in our stores. I can’t

talk about this without making special mention of councillor Ron Petterson. His passion and drive to support our local community is inspiring. We have raised more than $50k in the past three years from the balls alone. Our next ball is at Palm House on 28th October. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great night of entertainment and help raise money for this very special charity. “Some of the stories of how people have spoken about their experiences with their children and how the Ronald McDonald House helped them in their hour of need is always very emotional for me. I often wonder how many families would break down or how many children would not be here today if it weren’t for the help of Ronald McDonald House Charities,” Mike said. When you make your next journey to the golden arches, take a look at the people behind the products. The McHappy faces behind the Big Macs could very well be one of our future stars in business.

Swinging for success Kane Nusteling

A

irlie Beach locals can once again grab a bucket and hit golf balls to their heart’s content. The driving range at Whitsunday Green is open as the exciting community hub continues its development. PGA professional, Kane Nusteling, has undertaken an exciting new role, which sees him as the on-site manager for development as well as the business owner of the driving range. “I’m really enjoying the variation as I can combine it with my love of golf as a golf professional. As the on-site manager my tasks are varied, from obtaining quotes, trades people, signage, following up on completed works, to regularly keeping in touch with the developers. The area was left in bad condition and our task is to create a space that the Whitsunday community will utilise and be proud of. “It’s a great opportunity to create an entry statement fitting for this beautiful region whilst developing a strong community hub for locals to enjoy affordable land-based activities,” Kane said. Kane is excited to become the new business owner of the golf driving range and has already www.corelife.com.au 24 24 www.corelife.com.au

developed a range of services to compliment the facility. “As a PGA of Australia member I hope to further grow the game in the region. I am offering affordable golf tuition for everyone in a fun, friendly, relaxed and enjoyable manner.” As a local business-owner, Kane will be on-hand to offer any advice for golfers who pop down to hit a bucket of balls. What better way to unwind after a hard day at work. Stock for the pro shop is arriving daily and a club repair service is also available. Keen golfers can also get professionally fitted like the pro’s. Professional club fitting is available with the use of a Flightscope launch monitor, measuring launch angle and spin rates to assist with getting equipment best suited to the golfer. Clinics offer groups of friends a great social environment to get outside and enjoy the company of others while learning new skills. The facility is planning to host a number of fun events; from supplier demo-days and long-drive competitions to hole-in-one jackpot nights. Kane’s passion for golf arose as a young lad living near a golf course in Geelong.

“I participated in a lot of sports as a child, AFL and cricket among others, but golf was always my sport of choice,” he said. After beating the club president in a game at 11-years-old, the club allowed Kane to have a membership before the minimum age of 12. By the age of 15, he had attained a scratch handicap and was selected in Victorian State Junior squads competing regularly with the likes of US Open champion, Geoff Ogilvy. He later caddyied for Geoff at the home of golf, St Andrews, in Scotland. Kane then commenced a three-year PGA apprenticeship; studying a range of topics from business management and coaching to sports psychology and law; all while playing in weekly professional events. His travels lead to him landing a dream job. “I was an assistant golf manager at the home of golf, St Andrews, in Scotland. I spent five years on this dream course honing my skills both on and off the course.” After arriving back in Australia, Kane worked as Head Professional at Anglesea Golf Club on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. After some success as a player, an opportunity arose for

Kane to spend a week coaching with the country’s best coaches, which fast-tracked his development as a coach. During his time at Anglesea, Kane spent 8 years working as a junior girl’s coach for Woman’s Golf Victoria and then spent one more year back in Scotland at Pitlochry Golf Club before arriving in the Whitsunday’s to take up the role of Professional at Proserpine. After six years in Proserpine, he is looking forward to his next challenge at Whitsunday Green. While Kane provides coaching and clinics for players of all abilities, he also coaches some of our region’s brightest up-and-coming stars. Three of his juniors are representing Australia in international competitions; Levi Holmes, Jaxon Henderson-Feldman and Harper Henderson-Feldman. “I have worked with these boys for the past four years. All great kids, they started their golfing journeys at about 4, 5 and 6-yearsold. Starting out with weekly clinics, the boys have now progressed to 3, 6 and 9 holes with Levi regularly joining his dad and playing alongside other men in the 18-hole Proserpine competition. “The boys have all had success competing in Junior Opens throughout North Queensland and it’s an amazing opportunity for them to

now travel overseas and represent Australia at World Junior events. The National team will compete in Las Vegas and California which will provide an amazing learning experience for all three,” Kane said. Kane also coaches Kaylen Douthwaite who was recently selected to play for North Queensland. “Kaylem is a multi-talented youngster, making the representative North Queensland teams for both rugby league and golf this year. He started golf as a youngster, playing with his dad, and attends coaching. “The North Queensland team play at Kingaroy Golf Club later in July. Other notable local juniors who are taught by me that narrowly missed the NQ team are Rian Mitchell, Finn Bourke, Logan & Connor Devery, Blake Lovelock, Jaymee Stevens and Tayarn Bartley Looke. All these kids will be competing in the Sugar Circuit held throughout Mackay over the school holidays,” Kane said. Kane invites the community to Whitsunday Green, to discover Airlie’s newest golfing attraction. Ask him about his coaching, school holiday camps or group clinics as a fun way to hone your skills and drive your swing to greater lengths.

Brad Penhallurick

PENHALLURICK CONSTRUCTIONS It takes time to build a reputation from the ground up, but that’s what more than 20 years in the building industry has produced for Brad Penhallurick; whose business has been built on the foundations of quality work and exceptional service. A family-owned and operated building company, Penhallurick Constructions provides a comprehensive depth of industry experience to deliver innovative solutions for commercial and residential buildings. Born locally into a cane-farming family, Brad was skilled with his hands and not afraid of hard work. At school, he enjoyed his woodwork and identified quickly his talent with crafting wood. After returning to Proserpine from boarding school, Brad began his apprenticeship locally, learning from skilled tradesmen who valued quality over quantity. Being a business owner but also being on the majority of his building sites daily gives Brad insight into every project, there’s not a lot he hasn’t encountered. “Local experience counts for a lot, especially when it comes to repairs to cyclone damage. That is what has kept us run off our feet since Cyclone Debbie. We’ve done our best to help as many people as we can, but there’s a lot out there that still needs to be done. “We specialise in residential and commercial builds and all types of renovations. We build a couple of residential houses per year for clients looking for something special. We offer our clients a choice in quality materials and have our own dedicated tradesmen for quality control. Our team of around 16 is made up of skilled carpenters and builders as well as a tiler, concreters, plasterer, painter, roofers, plumbers and admin staff. We are fortunate to have an extremely dedicated team that also believe in our core values. We’re not the kind of builder who opts for the cheapest solutions, we choose the best for the job and offer clients choice to produce the best result. “Our integrated approach means better efficiency, a high-quality job and seamless delivery; often a better result for the same cost using better quality materials because of our methods and experience,” Brad said. Brad’s wife Christie works in the business looking after the administration and they have raised their family in the Whitsundays. Their eldest son, Lachlan, is an apprentice outboard mechanic and their younger son, Tom, is at school and is hoping to start a carpentry apprenticeship soon. Raising a family locally means they have a vested interest in the community and the homes and businesses built here.

Brad is also a third-generation cane farmer. He owns a sugar cane farm near Cedar Creek Falls and has recently leased a second block of cane land this season. “Even as someone who grew up on a cane farm, you don’t realise how much work goes into it until you are responsible for one yourself. It’s not just sitting on a tractor, there’s endless work behind the scenes. It’s a tough industry to make a dollar from,” he said. Brad’s dedication to building and farming means that most of his spare time is spent on the farm, sometimes driving tractors late into the night to make it viable. But he says he’d rather be working than not (unless he could be fishing and crabbing).

Henry Ford is quoted as saying, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” When your own journey through life requires you to move forward to a new destination, Overland Removals are the team to ensure your new move is a successful one. The local family-owned business was formed by Jared Townsend, who filled a niche market here in the Whitsundays. Over the past two years, his fleet has grown from two to five trucks and his team has expanded to 11. “We wouldn’t have a business without the team. Relocations is hard work and physically demanding, so we like to treat the team to days out, a few games of gold, drinks at Northerlies or a day on Ocean Rafting. They work hard and deserve the rewards, which in-turn produces a happy group,” Jared said. His business is passionate about employing young locals to give them an early employment opportunity in an industry which required hard work and discipline. “We have a young, fit team who are physically capable of tackling demanding relocation requirements. We train them in our systems as we use a different method from other removal businesses, so we train them to the way we know works from the start. It’s important to us to have a high level of presentation so that is something we instill in our team from the start.” Providing the best moving solutions is at the

forefront of Overland’s methods. The company has developed 150 wooden storage modules, which reduces the time it takes to pack the truck for relocation as well as significantly reducing the risk of damage. Jared stresses that one of the most important things a person can do to prepare for their move is to use quality packing materials. “We use industrial-strength bubble wrap and shrink wrap to secure and protect items, from priceless heirlooms to everyday items. A quality cardboard box is important to ensure items travel securely. We provide all of these as part of our packing service, or we can sell these items to those who prefer to pack their smaller items,” Jared said. Every move is unique, just as the contents of each load differs greatly. Jared talks about how Overland Removals treats each move uniquely to make the process easier for every journey. “We move locally across town, within Queensland and inter-state along the East Coast. Anywhere from Cairns to Melbourne and in-between. We’ve transported everything from ashes of loved-ones to an aeroplane without wings and grand pianos. Some people prefer for us to move only the larger items, while other services we provide are as thorough as packing clothes from drawers and kitchen items from cupboards.” Overland Removals to do the packing, stacking and delivering for you; to make your next move easy.

Meet the management team MICHAEL MULLER LICENSEE AKA BIG BOSS! TIME WITH MACCAS: 22 YEARS “What interested me about Maccas was the reputation of the brand and how the McDonald’s system worked. What I love now are the rewards I get from watching our people grow and develop with their careers in McDonald’s.” Is there training in place even for the big boss? “Absolutely! I would not be successful without the training, education and guidance the McDonald’s system provides.” What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened while you’ve been working? “One of the funniest, (I didn’t think so at the time) was when I had a meeting with the head of McDonald’s Queensland while I was training at a Brisbane store before I became a Licensee. It was my last day at this particular store. I hadn’t told any of the other managers I had a meeting and they proceeded to throw hot cake mix and scrambled egg mix all over me in the wash up room as a going away present! I had to wash my shirt in the sink dry it under a hand dryer and try to get the smell of eggs out of my hair with little success. I never said anything at the meeting but all I could smell was scrambled eggs.” If someone was considering a career with Macca’s, what advice would you give them? “Go for it, it will be the best decision you will make. It’s never been so appealing to eat your way around the world. As the popularity of Instagram brings perfectly positioned portions to our phone screens, we are greeted daily with drool-worthy dishes from London to Louisiana. The problem for most of us, is that a grand gastronomy getaway is beyond our budget. Thankfully, at Airlie Beach’s newest bar and grill, faraway flavours are now at our fingertips. Jane and Leigh Patterson opened Cooks Bar and Grill out of a desire to share their favourite flavours from far-flung lands. The couple are British; Jane was born in Yorkshire, whereas Leigh hails from Teesside. They emigrated to Australia in 2013 where Leigh worked on oil and gas pipelines in Queensland. What was meant to be a two-to-three-year experience has turned out to be a more permanent move as the couple fell in love with Australia. They brought their eight-year-old cocker spaniel, Snicker, with them from the UK. A holiday in 2015 was the start of a love-affair with Airlie. “We decided there and then that we wanted to retire here someday,” Leigh said. Leigh retired earlier this year and the couple returned to Airlie Beach for a holiday. When strolling past the lagoon, they noticed that one of the iconic restaurants was missing. “We noticed that the site which once housed Mr. Bones was vacant. We couldn’t help but keep thinking about it, so when we returned home we sent the agent some questions. We actually signed the lease and organised the fit-out without ever stepping foot on the site!”

produce where possible. Our modern mixed grill with two vertical skewers has been a massive hit as has the Louisiana Gumbo,” Jane said. Much of the menu is based on firsthand adventures. The gumbo was first tasted by them in North America while Leigh was working there, and Poutine was discovered in Vancouver, Canada. Their travels throughout Africa feature heavily on the menu with Moroccan salad and roasted peppers, while they also bring a taste of home, the scotch egg, which is a popular street food in England.

Jane, Leigh and Snicker Patterson

COOKS BAR AND GRILL

Their travels through Japan delivered some great dining and entertainment experiences. “We were made very welcome by the locals and ate soba noodles and miso soup whilst in a karaoke bar, as Leigh sang (or killed) every Beatles hit you could imagine. We are in the same bar every night and were welcomed with a microphone for ‘Mr Lee’ and a bowl of noodles for myself every evening,” Jane laughed. Take your tastebuds on a memorable trip at Cooks Bar and Grill near the Airlie Lagoon. In the early evening you may even catch Snicker and he basks in welcome attention while sprawling on the deck.

They have now moved to Airlie, purchasing land at Whitsunday Acres and are looking forward to joining the Whitsundays community.

“We tried to be a little different with a strong focus on vegan and vegetarian whilst not taking away from our meat eating customers. In the short time we have been open we have found that our seafood is a huge success. We feel this is inpart due to purchasing fresh, local

Jane and Leigh created a menu with their chef Andrew based on their travels from around the world. After visiting every other restaurant in Airlie, they worked on bringing unique flavour combinations to the waterfront.

Rachel and Lucas Bott WHITSUNDAY HOT ROD TOURS Some of the sharpest and shiniest hot rods around can be seen here in the Whitsundays, thanks to the passion of Lucas and Rachel Bott. A mechanic by trade, Lucas has always had a passion for cars; whereas Rachel was more of a closet rev-head who says that a unique car always turned her head. “Being with Lucas has brought out the monster though and I now own a 1972 Buick GSX and a 1970 Mach 1 Mustang which needs a bit of work,” Rachel said. The couple developed Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours, providing authentic classic hot rod transportation for events such as weddings, formals, birthdays or even just a drive up the coast with a difference. “All classic cars are fun and eye catching, and that’s why we want to give people tours in them, but there’s something different about a hot rod. They really are very unique, they always get attention and they are just seriously fun to drive in,” Lucas said. Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours has three classic cars for hire, two are available now while the third, a 1930’s Ford Sedan, is currently undergoing its restoration.

Photography by: Norina Jane

“In February we purchased Bonnie, a 1930 Ford Sedan with original paint. She has had some upgrades over the years, so she is not all original, but she will be keeping her original paint bringing a rustic touch to the fleet. She is not available for hire just yet as we need to convert her to righthand drive and do some other safety upgrades, however, we are able to take advance bookings for 12 to 18 months away,” Rachel said. The vehicles available to hire now are Betsy, a 1928 Ford Tourer with a 351 Cleveland motor with C4 auto transmission; and Letty, a 1949 Chevrolet Styleline with a brand new 350 Chev motor with turbo 350 auto transmission and custom metal flaked roof. Letty was missing from the photo shoot but has recently had her finishing touches added, new chrome on the exterior and interior trim. “We have a passion for old cars and we are incredibly lucky to be able to own some very unique and seriously fun cars. Not everyone is as lucky as us, but we want to be able to share the experience, which is why we do tours, formals and weddings. We love to get out and drive the cars just because they are so fun and if we can get others to come for a drive with us and experience it too all the better,” Rachel said.

What makes this couple’s business even more impressive is that both Rachel and Lucas work full-time in other jobs. Lucas works at a mine near Moranbah for BMA and Rachel works for Australian Marine Consultants in the Whitsundays, who are very understanding when she needs to run out the door to do a tour. “On his days off Lucas pretty much just works on cars constantly these days and in my limited time at home I’m either looking after the house and yard or working on the business as well. We have three fur babies that also keep us busy, Minnie a Kelpie Boxer cross and Tinker and Lemmy, both Miniature Dachshunds, they are our kids,” Rachel said. When it comes to a day that’s special or important to you, it’s not worth the risk of being transported in a vehicle without the proper commercial licensing and insurances, should the worst happen. Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours are fully licensed and insured to transport passengers; providing peace-of-mind. Visit Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours on Facebook to find out more and discover the thrill of revving and rolling in a hot rod.

Kellee Fogg, John Ryan, Michael Fitzgerald and Jade Fitzgerald WHITSUNDAY LAW The greatest asset in any knowledge-based organisation is the expertise of its professionals. The growing complexity and integrative nature of legal issues means that a growing knowledge base can only benefit the clients at Whitsunday Law.

Kellee brings her extensive experience in the property and commercial world to Whitsunday Law, from basic residential conveyancing to complex retail and commercial leases through to multifaceted business transactions.

Proporietor, Kellee Fogg, commented that the introduction of father-and-daughter team, Michael and Jade Fitzgerald from the Airlie Beach Legal practice, will help Whitsunday Law to continue to provide legal services in an efficient, enthusiastic and practical approach.

She said, “I like to think I am the problem solver when it comes to the issues that come across my desk. The GFC was not kind to the property world but it has taught me to think outside of the box to allow the practical result a client requires and for a deal to proceed.”

“Michael’s considerable experience in building and construction and the mining sectors will also contribute to additional services Whitsunday Law can assist clients with,” she said.

John Ryan, with more than 43 years’ experience as a solicitor, brings not only his legal knowledge but his practical guidance to the team at Whitsunday Law. John is the firm’s consultant and is also the only Notary Public in the area.

Tailored to the local market, Whitsunday Law has a proactive approach to working with its clients for the best outcome. “If that means setting up a budget and working within that, whether that be fixed fees for certain matters or providing an estimate of the range of costs for matters that are time costed, we will discuss that with the client before any work is commenced. The aim is to discuss the client’s goals and work with them to deliver or exceed those,” Kellee said. www.corelife.com.au 34 34 www.corelife.com.au

Jade Fitzgerald brings her fresh face, enthusiasm and energy to the team. Jade will draw on John Ryan’s experience in family law and imparting that to clients of Whitsunday Law. Jade’s father, Michael Fitzgerald, brings more than 16 years of experience in commercial law, insolvency and bankruptcy and litigation to the team which he has obtained from medium and small firms as well as a top tier law firm. “I commenced practising law primarily in the

areas of insurance, construction and commercial litigation with a top-tier Brisbane law firm. In other legal practices I gained additional experience in bankruptcy and insolvency, property and defamation law and commercial sales and leasing contracts,” Michael said. Michael brings a vast knowledge and experience from backgrounds in the construction, accommodation and accounting sectors, as well as more than five years in a legal capacity within the mining industry. “In one role I worked onsite for a mining operation near Moranbah, where I was accountable for the management of a multi-million dollar insurance claim that saw me present risk management and mitigation strategies to European insurance companies and underwriters at Lloyds of London in both 2013 and 2014.” Following discussions with Kellee at Whitsunday Law, Michael and Kellee both saw that their practices had a lot in common and that combining the practices would lead to enhanced client-service offerings. “I have known Kellee and John for as long as I have lived in the Whitsundays and I am looking forward to working with them and the great team at Whitsunday Law.” Photography by: Norina Jane

Growing with our Community

ALIVE AND BOOMING MACKAY IS BOOMING AND THE STATS ARE IN TO PROVE IT. Increased business confidence throughout the region resulted in stellar passenger numbers passing through Mackay Airport, with all airlines performing well with more passengers during May than ever before, even beating numbers from the peak of the mining boom. Mackay Airport General Manager, Rob Porter, talks about how Mackay Airport is booming with confirmed additional flights coming onboard this month. “It has certainly been a busy time for us all as our passenger numbers for May confirm. A total of 67,900 passengers passed through Mackay Airport, with Qantas and Virgin flying more passengers during May than ever before. With Jetstar also confirming it will increase flights from July 1, this is great news for the region and really demonstrates how much the place is buzzing right now,” Rob said. As part of Mackay Airport’s commitment to being a catalyst for regional growth, it has launched an exciting new community grant program. “The ‘I fly Mackay because we care Community Grants Program’ will provide much needed financial assistance to some of the hard working not-for-profit community-based organisations in the Mackay region. “Community groups are invited to lodge an application to receive a $1000 cash grant to help fund a specific project, event or equipment purchase. BEACON OF HOPE

With RACQ CQ Rescue

Bringing people home safely is not just the job of the commercial planes that fly into Mackay Airport. The life saving helicopters of RACQ CQ Rescue also operate from the airport grounds and are responsible for bringing many injured, lost and scared patients back to safety. One of these patients is Laura Lucas who had been out water-skiing with her family at the Eungella Dam. Recently recovered from a lifethreatening brain-tumor, Laura was ecstatic to be given the ‘all-clear’ and celebrated by taking the boat out with her husband and four children. This was the first time in four years Laura could enjoy being a normal healthy mum instead of a cancer patient, making this incident even more tragic. “It was with gusto that I grabbed that ski rope and got behind our little boat for a single ski. The dam was calm so I was going quite fast, cutting water outside the wake when the ski rope snapped in the middle sending me catapulting through what felt like a brick wall. It was of course just the dam water,” Laura recounts.

“The pain hit me instantly and while I don’t remember losing consciousness, I was in another world when my husband and a friend lifted me back into the boat which is where I stayed until the helicopter arrived. “I was lucky enough to catch the chopper on its way home from a job in Bowen and from the moment the RACQ CQ Rescue medical crew arrived their professionalism and care put my anxious mind and that of my family’s at ease. “The transit was made as comfortable as possible and before I knew it I was being handed over to emergency staff at the Base Hospital where I underwent X-rays and CT scans.” Laura was discharged from hospital two days later with a dislocated collarbone, torn shoulder ligaments, whiplash and muscle separation on the back of her rib cage. She was very lucky to avoid permanent spine damage. She couldn’t be more thankful to the RACQ CQ Rescue team, commending their genuine care during the event and throughout her recovery. “I had calls to check on my progress, a get well

card and I really did feel cared for and that I wasn’t just another number,” Laura said. It only became apparent when Laura returned to say thank you to the team that her family had been regular donators to RACQ CQ Rescue for the last twenty years. It was her father, the late Peter Keogh, who first started donating. “Dad was a practical but very passionate man and as a young schoolgirl I recall him singing the praises of the CQ Rescue helicopter,” said Laura. “As an adventurous family if we weren’t out on the water fishing or water skiing we would be on our dirt bikes at Grasstree Beach tearing through the dirt tracks so there was a good chance we or someone we knew would require its services.” Fortunately the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was ready to help transport Laura back to safety on that fateful day all these years later. “Next time my husband mentions that the ski rope looks a little old and needs replacing I won’t respond with ‘Oh rubbish, it’ll be right!’” joked Laura.

trends to make

your house a home

As the way we occupy our living space evolves with each passing year, new innovations and trends arise to enhance the way we live, thrive and relax. From new technology to make our lives easier to creative ways to bring the outdoors in, this year’s trends are focused on making us feel great as well as looking aesthetically pleasing. Designed to make your lifestyle happier and healthier, here are some of the best trends evolving this year.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

HEALING HOUSEPLANTS

Think sustainable home design is just a fad? Think again. Green is growing and growing and growing. Climate and carbon, human health and high technology are among the top trends expected to drive the global green building market in 2018. In this day and age, we want a house that makes us feel good as well as look great.

Indoor plants are trending again, not only for aesthetics, but because they can help our health. Plants purify the air and can also reduce stress, control humidity and lower sound pollution. With a burst of oxygen, plants in the bedroom can promote better sleep.

EMBRACING THE OUTDOORS Blessed with a year-round temperate climate, more families are wanting to fuse their indoor and outdoor living options. Modern landscape design can incorporate outdoor areas which provide the same comfort as indoors but the invigorating feeling of being outside. Incorporating large, comfortable seating options and outdoor kitchens, these indoor / outdoor areas become the new focal point for socialising. ECO-GARDENING There's been a rise of eco-conscious gardeners who are seeking a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way to garden. More people are being drawn to the idea of clean, sustainably sourced food from the back yard. Gardening practices that benefit pollinators have been gaining popularity as people are getting the message that bee and pollinator populations are dwindling.

AS TOUGH AS TILES Tiles have never really gone out of fashion, but with increasing trendy designs coming on the market, we are finding they are becoming the flooring of choice throughout the whole house, not just the kitchen and bathroom. Because they naturally keep houses cooler, people are opting for tiles in their bedroom to help them sleep. NAIL THE RUG-HANGING TREND Would you swap your artwork for a rug? Statement rugs are trending on Pinterest which promote hanging the humble floor accessory on the wall. These hand-crafted statement pieces add interest and texture to a room, and the bolder the better. Flick through Pinterest for some ‘Pinspiration’ and you’ll find some gorgeous images which nail the look.

Icon Homes BUILT FOR NORTH QUEENSLAND

W

ith innovative home designs and clever construction techniques to compliment the North Queensland environment, Icon Homes build to suit your lifestyle. Much like the lives we like to lead, Icon Homes mimic nature in design with bright, open spaces; fresh airflow and a balance of practicality and style. Since its inception in 2010, they have built more than 200 new homes throughout the Whitsunday region. One of its customers, Stuart Jamieson, talks to us about the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home that Icon Homes built for his family. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ICON HOMES? “We had never built a home before and had no idea where to start, but Michael from Icon Homes explained the entire process for us, so we knew exactly what the building journey would be. Nothing was ever too hard, if we had any questions we could contact Michael and he was more than happy to answer them. As I worked out-of-town, Icon Homes gave me regular building and photo updates which was great, so I could see the progress the house was making even while I was away.”

TELL US ABOUT THE HOUSE ICON HOMES BUILT FOR YOU. “The home has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a media room, formal entrance and open-plan kitchen and dining area. The master bedroom has a large walk-in robe and ensuite. “Icon Homes has more than a hundred house plans and we didn’t even know where to start, but Michael had a look at our block of land and the list of things we wanted in our home and presented us a smaller range of plans that suited what we were looking for. From there it was as easy as picking the one we loved! “He was very knowledgeable and gave great advice, such as where to put the entertaining area, so we didn’t get the hot afternoon summer sun.” HOW DID ICON HOMES ASSIST WITH THE INTERIOR DECISIONS? “They have an amazing Style Centre where we picked our colour selections for everything; including paint, tiles, roof, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. It was great to have everything in the same room which really helped us visualise what we had chosen.”

The Smart Guide to Building Your Own Home By Ian Bean from Visual Constructions Building a home should be, and often is, an exciting journey of fulfilling lifelong dreams. However, it needs to be approached carefully to avoid the process becoming a terrifying manifestation of your budget and timeline nightmares! Here are some common problems that can occur when building a home and how to avoid them. INADEQUATE PLANNING Planning is by far the most important stage in building any house. It is important to take time to evaluate what needs your new house has to fulfil. What is your current lifestyle? What are you planning for the future? It is also important to secure financing before the project starts so that you will have a solid guide to aid your builders. TRYING TO DO IT YOURSELF Experienced designers and builders will have the knowledge and tools to help you plan and build a house that is safe and well crafted, within a set timeframe and budget. Do your research when choosing a homebuilder, ask for recent references and view some of their previous building projects and display homes. TAKING SHORTCUTS It can be easy to choose basic materials and fittings, especially when your budget is a bit tight. Keep in mind that

doing this can be very costly in the long run. While it is important not to overspend, careful planning should go into buying good-quality materials that will last over the years. NOT HAVING A CLEAR WRITTEN AGREEMENT A written agreement or a contract can help resolve potential issues regarding prices and design decisions, and can set out a clear deadline for the completion of the build. The importance of having a written agreement can’t be stressed enough. Without one you might find that fixed prices aren’t fixed at all, and delays are much more likely. NOT THINKING ABOUT LIGHTING People often put all of their time and thought into planning the overall structure of the house, and forget to plan one of the most important features – windows. Without natural lighting even the biggest of houses can feel dark and not particularly homely. Plan where to place your windows, and think about the position of the sun throughout the day when doing this. Also think about what size windows would work well with your build. Skylights are also a good option for increasing the amount of natural light in your home, and can make rooms feel bigger.

10 Questions to Ask a Home Builder These may all seem like little things but it’s the little things that count! When you start to vary standard inclusions this is when your costs may start to escalate. Be sure to check what’s included before signing an agreement. An open home or visit to a display home is the perfect place to ask questions of the home builder and start to get a feel for the quality of their homes.

1. If you are looking at a display home ask what is included in the base price versus presented in the display home?

2. Is the price of the house based on a standard site and would it be more

depending on the type of land (e.g square block, rectangle, size of street frontage, sloping)?

3. What type of frame is the house built with? 4. Are the slabs conventional or waffle pod? 5. Is the alfresco area included in the base price? 6. Are the alfresco and porch ceilings set with weather resistant

plasterboard or is it fibrous cement sheeting with joining strips?

7. Does your base price include flyscreens, a TV antenna, a letterbox and a clothesline?

8. W hat type of paint is used? If it is not a 3 coat paint system you are getting an inferior quality finish. Ask if you will be able to wipe the walls with cleaning products to remove marks as this is often a good test of quality.

9. How many double power points (DPP) are included in each of the rooms? 10. What is the standard lighting included? www.corelife.com.au 47

WHY TILES? Tiles have proven their beauty and durability over thousands of years. The Romans famously used ceramics to create opulent decorative effects throughout their most revered buildings, which still stand strong today. Fast-forward to today and those same natural elements of strength and durability are a favourite of home-owners, adding long-lasting class to any room in the house. Kristy Lee, co-owner of Beaumont’s Mackay and Airlie beach stores, shares why tile flooring is the smart choice for home-owners in the Whitsundays. “In tropical North Queensland, we are subject to regular extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, high humidity and cyclones. As we’ve experienced recently with Cyclone Debbie, not all types of flooring cope well with water damage. Many forms of flooring, once wet, prove

Tiles are a popular flooring choice throughout Australian homes, and with a host of benefits, it’s easy to see why. When debating which flooring material is best for your new home or renovation, tiles will more than likely come out on top. They take on any challenge with style, they are valued for their versatility and longevity, they come in a huge range of style options, are resilient around children and in natural disasters, easy to keep clean and keep your home cooler during the summer months. very difficult to clean, most need replacing, while others can create a health hazard in your home by harbouring mould beneath the surface. “Tiles are fast-becoming the flooring material of choice for every room in the house here in the Whitsundays, not just bathrooms and kitchens. They are water resistant, made from natural products they are environmentally safe and healthier for your home, they are extremely durable and hard-wearing, they won’t dent under your high heels and are great at keeping the house cooler in our hot summers,” Kristy said. Tiles are also allergy-friendly, scratch-resistant, pet-friendly, odour-free and low maintenance. To view the expansive range of styles available, visit the teams at Beaumont Tiles in Airlie Beach and Mackay, to keep your house looking good for decades to come.

LANDSCAPES WE DESIGN, WE BUILD WE PLANT, WE CREATE

Savvy homeowners realise that the key to a successful build is to involve a landscape architect in the early stages of the home design project. The professional skill of merging man-made structures with the natural landscape is one which can ensure a flawless indoor / outdoor flow to complement our outdoor living style in Queensland. Leaf Wood Rock Landscapes offer more than most landscapers. With a fully-qualified landscape architect, Rosie Mohorko, the business has the ability to design from conception to construction. Rosie’s business partner, Warren Driscoll, handles the construction. The partnership enables dreams to become visualized through extensive consultation with the client entailing sketches,

CAD plans and rendered visuals. Only then the dreams can be translated into the reality through quality construction finish. “Our difference is that we can help clients every step of the way. We ensure that a dream can become reality by using traditional and modern techniques, as well as our experience, to show a client what the finished product would look like in their yard before construction even begins. After completion we can also assist with maintenance. From decks and fences to water features and green walls; we have endless solutions and ideas to transform the exterior of a home or business into a truly special place,” Warren said. Developing a landscape plan in conjunction

with the architectural drawings ensures that homeowners will enjoy a happier building experience, a superior end result and in many cases, significant cost savings. When you consider your next build, think about your outside as well as your inside. Testimonial “Rosie’s input was crucial to the success of key areas of the Green Roof Centre’s demonstration roof being taken from concept to reality. Rosie has fantastic plant knowledge and a keen eye for design and detail, she was a pleasure to work with.” Jeff Sorrill (Manager) Sheffield Green Roof Centre

LET US TAKE CARE OF YOUR GARDENS!

Both post cyclone and more recently during the construction of our new warehouse, they have been exceptional at keeping what we have left neat and tidy. Tim has been great over the years, nothing is too hard and his knowledge of what will work for us in regards to our landscape has been great. We have been lucky enough to pretty much have the same team looking after us for most of this time and their knowledge of our needs is something you don’t see often. JENNY Tim started doing our home lawns and garden maintenance 11 years ago when we first moved to the area. Whitpro offer a fantastic property service. They look after the lawn and gardens and when necessary do tree trimming, pressure clean driveways and really look after the outside of my home. After our terrifying friend; Debbie the cyclone, Tm turned up to check that myself, my dog and house were okay. He did a quick trim here and there and was gone This was a day after the cyclone when he and his firm were extremely pushed to the limits. This meant a lot to me. Whitpro with Tim and Norina at the head are beyond reproach, their workmen are reliable and courteous and everything is done to a high service. Nothing has ever been "too much trouble" I cannot recommend them highly enough!

HOMEPROPERTYGARDEN

Coco Cooper, Paul Jukes, Eda Jenkins, Mekaela Jones (seated) and Jessa Lloyd and children The Whitsunday Organic Community Gardens is an evolving project led by a team of dedicated colourful gardeners at the site on Galbraith Park Drive. The garden has been designed and implemented using permaculture principles with a food forest containing a vast variety of common, medicinal and exotic varieties of fruits. There is an established native windbreak, raised beds for annual crops and a mandala bed created using recycled rope from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. There is always something happening at the garden from sowing of new seeds or seedlings to propagating of the perennial greens or the chop and drop of pigeon peas. At the moment, the gardeners are harvesting weekly, sharing around and sometimes even cooking up the delicious produce to share. Pumpkins are flourishing; bananas have flowered, white radish are popping their heads ready for eating and the chicory is blooming red. Soon, they hope to make the gardens accessible to those in wheelchairs, create a children’s play space, cob oven, sensory garden, bush tucker area and a quiet place for those to come to the garden seeking solace. All of this would not be possible without grant funding and the ongoing support from local businesses whose kind donations have enabled them to install irrigation systems, a rain water tank, solar pump and much more. The group gathers twice a week from 9am

both Wednesdays and Sundays and everyone is welcome to come along! For more information visit www.whitsundayocg.org.au or find the group on Facebook. JESSA LLOYD “It has been amazing to see the garden grow from just a patch of grass to something really lush and beautiful but what I have loved growing the most are the friendships and the garden community. That has been the biggest part of coming together and gardening for me and I think that is what community gardening is all about, no matter what you grow.” COCO COOPER “This is the first time I have been part of a community garden and it is really nice to be surrounded by like-minded people while working. I love the peace of being in the garden listening to the birds and just being on my own as well with a group. Being new to town, it is a great way of getting new friends. Also, for my kids, they can just run around and play while snacking on amazing food.”

with the garden. The warmth and connection of being with others and teaching children in the garden, working together for the greater good is really special.” PAUL JUKES “Community is like the soil from which all goodness grows. It needs sweat to water it and blood to nourish it. But from community the seeds of intention sprout into life so I love giving my sweat and sometimes blood to give birth to that. I do this all over the world so it makes perfect sense to do it when I'm here at home.” EDA JENKINS “I am passionate about growing beautiful, clean food. Though the focus of the community gardens is gardening, a wonderful, diverse community of gardeners has also grown. The connection with others and the exchange of ideas and knowledge are the rewarding byproducts of community gardening.”

MEKAELA JONES “I love growing all food that grows in our spectacular climate. Tropical perennial greens are a favourite. As well as growing plants, another favourite thing to grow and nurture is the community that comes along

Since joining Australia’s leading water solutions network and rebranding as Think Water Whitsunday, the business has grown dramatically in terms of its team and the products and services it provides. The locally-owned business has garnished a reputation for being a leader in water efficiency and innovation. Noel completed his plumbing trade to become a qualified plumber, gas-fitter and drainer and the business has added a water waste servicing department. Being locally owned and operated, Noel and the team understand the water issues that are specific to this area of Queensland. If you need an irrigation design, a quote for supply and installation, or just some general advice, Noel and the team can help. With a dedication to the local community, Think Water Whitsunday has been proud sponsors of many community organisations over the past decade. “A few of the organisations we have supported include the Junior Brahmans, the Whitsunday Campdraft and Whitsunday Netballers. We are grateful for the continued support of the community and our customers, without them we wouldn’t be here and wouldn’t be able to continue to grow and offer the range of products that we have,” Noel said. Think Water Whitsunday has the expertise, products and experience to help with all things irrigation; from small residential gardens through to large-scale agricultural and horticultural solutions. They can assist with water filtration for homes and businesses to ensure the water you are drinking is free from nasties, as well as provide fire protection products and services. Local service vehicles, pump technicians and licensed plumbers are at-hand to attend to on-site jobs. It’s fitting that for the business’s 10th birthday, the store front has received a complete makeover. Polished concrete floors, new shelving and displays has created a welcoming area for those browsing water products and accessories. Having recently become a Karcher dealer, the range has expanded to include pressure cleaners, scrubbers and more. For those with pools to maintain, there is now a dedicated pool counter for advice, pool water testing and a full range of chemicals and accessories. A drink station is a welcome addition to the store, with customers able to enjoy a free coffee, chilled or sparkling water as they browse the water solutions on offer. Noel and Sharon are passionate about providing the best professional

and personal service to customers in meeting their needs and exceeding expectations. They believe that it’s not just about selling a product, but finding out what the need is to ensure the best solution is offered. For pumps, plumbing, irrigation or filtration; Think Water Whitsunday are your all-inclusive water specialists; providing the right product, knowledge and after-care solutions to keep you flowing. Join the team for their 10th birthday bash! There will be giveaways, a jumping castle for the kids, balloons, a sausage sizzle, prizes, supplier displays and fantastic in-store specials. A FUNNY WORK STORY: I was working in the field with Noel one day on an irrigation system. It was really hot so I called out to say I was taking my shirt off then continued working. Ten minutes later I hear Noel’s voice coming from behind the truck asking if he could come out yet! The poor guy thought I was topless and was waiting for me to give him the all-clear so that he could come back from behind the truck again! Ha ha, he didn’t realise I had simply removed my top layer because it was hot, I still had a t-shirt on!

WHAT IS HENDRA VIRUS? The virus that causes hendra results in a sporadic, but serious disease that was first discovered in 1994 in the town of Hendra, in Brisbane. Whilst infection with HeV in humans, and horses to some extent, is rare, this disease has catastrophic effects on those affected by the virus. Because of this, HeV is considered a serious zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transferred from animal to human. Specifically, for HeV, the transmission of this virus can be a little complex. Flying foxes are the start of the chain and

what we call the reservoir for this disease. This means that they are chronically infected and will act as a constant source of the virus. Flying foxes begin to excrete HeV when they are either stressed or heavily infected. Horses will then get the virus from urine and faeces produced from infected flying foxes when they roost/fly over a horse’s water source or grazing paddock. Once a horse is infected, it is able to pass on the disease to another horse or a human via blood and bodily fluids.

WHAT DOES HENDRA LOOK LIKE The simple answer to this question is that hendra virus can have any of the signs mentioned in the picture below. Previously diagnosed cases of HeV have shown all of those mentioned below and more. However, the following are most commonly seen in horses confirmed with HeV: • Acute onset of illness • Increased body temperature • Increased heart rate • Discomfort/shifting weight between all legs • Depression • Rapid deterioration ± respiratory and/or neurological signs There are even documented cases with only inappetence indicating that their horse was unwell and was later confirmed to be HeV. “HENDRA WON’T AFFECT ME, WE DON’T HAVE A FLYING FOX PROBLEM” In 2008, 3 horses were confirmed to be positive with hendra virus in Proserpine. Another horse was suspected to also have the disease but it was never confirmed.

The next year, another 2 horses were positive for hendra virus, just up the road in Bowen. Interestingly, the second case, which had been previously euthanased also tested positive to hendra even though it wasn't suspected. If looking from a chronological point of view, Mackay actually had the first positive cases of HeV. 2 sick horses in Mackay that had samples collected before death/euthanasia, were tested after the initial outbreak in Hendra September, 1994. It was only after the famous town had an outbreak that these samples were tested and confirmed HeV positive. Since then, Mackay has had another 2 positive cases in 2012 and 2013. To all horse owners out there, please ask yourself this question: “If my horse all of a sudden was sick, would I want to call the Vet?” If the answer is “Yes” then please cover your horse against Hendra by vaccinating it. All sick horses need to be proven not to have the terrible virus by testing first. To get that information is too lengthy and expensive. Thorough treatment is not possible until Hendra is excluded either, so it makes good sense to avoid that. SPEAK TO US TODAY ABOUT COMMENCING YOUR HORSES VACCINATION PROGRAM

Dancing her way to L.A

ISABELLE KRATZ

T

he stage is not only a place where talent shines, but confidence also beams. Multi-talented performer, Isabelle Kratz, knows how tough it can be for young girls to build their self-confidence and become selfmotivated. The young star of the stage has talents in dancing, singing, acting and modelling; but is also socially proactive; donating her time to fundraise for various foundations while working toward an outlet to help other girls feel better about themselves. Isabelle moved to the Whitsundays with her family four years ago from Western Australia. Before she was four she was already dancing and fell in love with the movement. She continued her dancing here in the Whitsundays, first with Miss Jenny at Whitsunday Dance Connection before joining Adore with Miss Juanita two years ago. Isabelle trains in jazz, musical theatre, contemporary and ballet and received a Senior Scholarship with Adore Dance last year. She followed that up with Honors in her jazz exam in June.

While dancing is her core passion, Isabelle has branched out to include modelling and acting into her busy weekly schedule. She was spotted by a talent agent at a dancing audition who suggested she had a great look for modelling. She joined Brooke Lee Modelling in Mackay and finished as a state finalist for two modelling pageants, where she will travel to Melbourne in October and Brisbane next April to compete across a host of categories. Her mother, Jasmine, explains how these competitions will allow her to become more engaged within the community. “The pageant events include social responsibility engagements, which encourages Belle to contribute to her community. She will continue to fundraise for the Scarlett May Foundation which supports families with critically ill children and will take part in events volunteering for Ronald McDonald House. She has a big heart and always wants to help other children. The social engagements have helped her own personal development, as she becomes more confident and determined to help others. This has also helped her flourish as a School Captain at Cannonvale State School this year,” Jasmine said. A lack of acting or drama schools in the Whitsundays hasn’t stopped Isabelle from adding this talent to her repertoire. This month she is singing and dancing on the big stage in Brisbane as part of Grease – The Arena Experience. She will have three weeks of rehearsal leading up to the performances. Being an all-round superstar has opened the door for a fantastic opportunity for Isabelle in the USA. She has received an invitation to attend the ARTS international showcase in Los Angeles. This will place her in front of the industries most influential talent scouts who are seeking tomorrow’s stars. With her variety of talents, Isabelle will be showcasing her skills across 10 categories in a selection of modelling, acting, singing and dancing performances. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for Belle, we couldn’t be prouder. Not only of her talent but how she’s grown into a caring individual also. She’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the out, she is a wonderful role model for other girls. It doesn’t matter whether it’s her dance or her school work, she’s determined to learn and keeps working until she gets is right,” Jasmine said. Every twist and twirl is paving her way to L.A, providing a giant leap in Isabelle’s performance career. www.corelife.com.au 63

A RUNNER’S LIFE PARKRUN AUSTRALIA The feeling of your sneakers moving rhythmically across the pavement, your body responding to the beat, your breath hot and alive; this is the thrill of running! With our beautifully scenic backyard, it is no surprise that there is a host of running clubs and events to join in the Mackay and Whitsunday area. To celebrate this vibrant social network, we met a few of the local personalities that get people moving in our community.

HOW IS PARKRUN DIFFERENT TO OTHER EVENTS? Parkrun isn’t about running. In fact running is secondary to the fact that it is a social event where people from local communities of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels gather together at 7am every Saturday morning to simply start their weekend in a positive manner by running or walking a 5km circuit.

Anthony Bob

Tim

Tim Oberg CEO and founder of parkrun Australia When Tim Oberg completed his first parkrun at Wimbledon Common in England, he immediately fell in love with the concept and knew he had to bring it to Australia. In 2011 when Tim moved to Australia with his wife and their three young children, he had been given permission from parkrun founder Paul SintonHewitt and already had the foundations for parkrun Australia in-place. Working alongside Samantha Hughes who was the Senior Active parks Officer for the City of Gold Coast Council, Tim launched the first Main Beach parkrun on 4 April 2011. Flash forward to present time and parkrun Australia now has over 312 weekly parkrun locations and over 620,000 members, of whom around 40,000 complete 5K each week. And it’s all completely free thanks to the dedication of over 3,000 volunteers every Saturday! Longest run: The longest duration event I have completed was 70.3km in Monaco Best experience: These happen every week at parkrun running with my wife and kids. Favourirte location: Central Park in New York or Venice Beach in Los Angeles Bob Barford from parkrun Airlie Beach Originally from Sydney, Bob has competed in four Sydney to Hobart races. He moved to Adelaide in the 1960’s and then Alice Springs in the 1970’s where he lived for thirty years. During this time he enjoyed cycling and then triathlons. When he moved to Airlie Beach to pursue sailing he began running regularly as a way of keeping fit. When he heard about parkrun, he knew he had to bring one to the Whitsundays! Longest run: Half marathon

Nikki Nikki Giles from parkrun Mackay Nikki grew up in the Mackay region and in 2008 when she moved to WA, she discovered a passion for adventure, mountain biking, triathlon and running. When she returned to Mackay in 2011 she found a whole social network connected to her active outdoor pursuits. “Mackay is abundant with trails and paths, wonderful people and great events!” Said Nikki. When a few local runners approached her about bringing parkrun to Mackay, Nikki knew she would love to be involved. Longest run: My longest ‘measured official distance’ is 42.2km Best experience: For me, it is about sharing my passion with others around me. Favourirte location: Trails and Mackay has so many of them! Anthony Blines from parkrun Mackay Anthony is a Mackay local and grew up in Glenden before moving down to Brisbane to study at university. Upon completing his education he returned home and now works as a Civil Engineer. He has always been passionate about sport but finds running fits into his lifestyle better these days. Anthony took on the leadership of parkrun Mackay in April 2017. Fav location: Blue Mountains

WHITSUNDAY RUNNING CLUB Wendy Downes Wendy has been running for over 40 years, falling in love with the sport after completing her first race in Sydney’s City to Surf. In just 18 months she went from enjoying fun runs to competing in her first marathon. “Running is in my blood, it is my solace and my head space,” said Wendy. An instigator of many local running events, Wendy was instrumental in bringing the first Triathlon Club to the Whitsundays in 1999. Then, in 2012 she started the Whitsunday Running Club so the region could host its first half marathon. Retiring from active roles in both clubs Wendy now focuses on the ‘Run the Great Whitsunday Trail’ annual event. Longest run: 55km Best experience: Running the Great Wall of China Favourirte location: The Big 5 in Sth Africa (a game park) Tim McQuoid-Mason

After retiring 5 years ago Tim decided the best way to deal with the ageing process was to “run away from it!” Originally from Zimbabwe, Tim spent his childhood in South Africa before moving to Australia 27 years ago. Falling in love with the Whitsundays 15 years ago when he took a job in the region, Tim rediscovered his passion for running by attending parkrun. From this he was elected President of the running club last September. “After many years of running it allows me to give something back to the sport,” said Tim. Longest run: 92 km in the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Best experience: As an 18 year old completing my first Comrades Marathon. Clay, Faye, Karli, Lewis and Spotty

RUN

AS 1 FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS

DEEP BREATHS FOR A CAUSE Imagine fighting for breath every day. It’s only one of the everyday struggles which faces young Proserpine local, Karli Elder.

B

eing born with Cystic Fibrosis means that Karli has taken medication her entire life. And a lot of it. Every day she swallows handfuls of pills which help her to breathe and to digest food. Every day she takes more medication through a nebulizer. On top of this, she undergoes grueling physiotherapy and breathing exercises twice daily. And this is when she’s healthy. Karli’s mother, Faye, believes that Cystic Fibrosis would receive more support if more people could see what sufferers endure, which is why she is passionate about raising awareness of the disease. “It’s a disease which has to come out from behind closed doors. My husband, Clay and I have been taught how to percuss (thump) Karlis chest by expert physiotherapists. We have done this since she was three-weeks-old. The beating on her chest is to loosen the thick mucus that forms in her lungs. It’s extremely important for quality of life and length. Thank goodness Clay is the mainstay physio person while I sort the medical

www.corelife.com.au 66 66 www.corelife.com.au

side. Together we are a good team. We have put a lot of things in place to minimise risk to Karli’s health. Then we just get on with living the best life we can as a family! Karli is a battler. Like most children who are born with cystic fibrosis, she’s not afraid of hard work and commitment because she’s known no other way. She’s been hospitalized nine times over her life for two weeks at a time. Because the disease worsens over time, sufferers will get sicker and live a shorter life than most, if a cure isn’t found. This is where support of events such as Run as 1 are important. “A cure will be found, it will just take time and money. “2018 is the third consecutive year for Run as 1, a fundraising event founded by Karli’s cousin. Raising awareness for support of research funding is something we are very passionate about. “The children who fight C.F. are stoic troopers. Anyone who knows Karli will attest to that. People

who spend time with us and see first-hand what is involved in a caring for someone with C.F. over a 24-hour period never cease to be moved by what is Karli’s “normal” and are in awe of her positivity,” Faye said. Imagine, if we all pooled our resources and contributed to this disease, how quickly a cure could be found. For the thousands of families living with this disease worldwide, let’s come together as a community, to raise funds for research, and Run as 1 for cystic fibrosis. Visit the Run as 1 for Cystic Fibrosis Facebook page for more information. Take part in the 1.5km dog walk or the 5km run. All abilities are encouraged to enter, it is a fun family day with food stalls and great prizes to be won. The event in Mackay will be held on August 5, while Proserpine will follow weeks after on August 26. Register online at runas1.com.au and use your lungs to contribute to cystic fibrosis research.

COMMUNITY LIFE

laying new FoundationS St Catherine’s Catholic College, The Whitsundays has a long history within Proserpine. The original school and convent was built in 1925, following fundraising from the local community, under the leadership of Sister Mary Mercy. Sixty students enrolled during its first year. Fast forward to 2018, and St Catherine’s Catholic College now offers extensive opportunities for approximately 700 students, ranging from Kindergarten to Year 12 and playing host to three specialist precincts; Early Years, Middle Years and Senior Secondary. St Catherine’s Catholic College students are provided with an education that is more than just academic. The students are nurtured to develop spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically in a community that embraces Catholic values. We use our college values of Excellence, Justice, Compassion and Community to inspire and guide the character, talents and aspirations of our young students.

In 2019, the current Early Years precinct (currently Mercy Campus, on Marathon Street) will join the Middle Years and Senior Secondary campus, on Renwick Road. It will involve the construction of six contemporary classrooms, three innovative new Prep rooms, modern multipurpose rooms, a state of the art library, as well as storerooms and the conversion of existing admin space into a larger administration and staff room. While an emotional decision given the history of the Marathon Street Campus, staff believe having the whole college in one location will be a much more practical and efficient alternative for parents. After six years of running two campuses, leadership and staff can all see the benefits in providing a Kindy to Year 12 Catholic education, all from one modern site.

Current and future St Catherine’s Catholic College families are invited to view the campus plans at one of St Catherine’s upcoming events: Prep Information Sessions: Wednesday 25 July, 9am and 6pm Secondary Expo: Friday 17 August Year 6 into 7 Parent Information Night: Tuesday 21 August, 6pm Prep Expo: Wednesday 26 October www.corelife.com.au 67

TRIBULATION A MOVIE BEING MADE IN MACKAY With a passion for raw and honest storytelling, Tribulation, a film being created and produced right here in Mackay, is shaping up to wow audiences worldwide. Tania Townes-Tass is the writer and producer of Tribulation; a movie with a post-apocalyptic genre blended with religious undertones and goodversus-evil survival. Tania says that she was born with a natural intrigue toward the world of film. “At the age of six I knew I was going to work in film. My father exposed me to many different genres of Hollywood blockbusters as a kid, and so the artists in the industry who have shaped and influenced me are the writers, directors, and actors of the 80s. “Through studying a BA major in Drama, and a minor in Film and Media, I realised there was more to me than in-front of the camera. I discovered that my greatest joy was found in writing and directing. I got married soon after uni and started a family. I settled into raising my family and holding-off on my dream career but kept myself current with further study. In 2011, I completed a Diploma in Film and Television Production at the International Film College, on the Gold Coast, and it reignited a spark,” she said. Straight after she graduated, Tania wrote her first feature film, Tribulation. “It’s incredibly exciting to finally be in production. This step to make our first film has formed the foundation of our film company, TruthEmpire Films. I started writing the movie in 2012, and www.corelife.com.au 68 68 www.corelife.com.au

“As a writer, I am obsessed with the embodiment of truth and what truth means within a person and or within the relationship between people, living creatures, and a higher power. I believe in sharing the truth of an experience and not sugar-coating the hard honesty of a tragedy, just because the viewer might not handle it. I don't believe in being politically correct if it means having to tell a lie, so society can swallow it better. I believe writing has to have purpose, and it has to excite a healthy change within you.”

only just finished it last year. It has had two re-writes since then, and has evolved with the actors during auditions. I have had to rewrite for locations, and budget restrictions, and have added characters to accommodate wonderful actors who weren’t successful in the roles they auditioned for. “I knew I had to make a movie that relied on inexpensive sets, and natural backdrops due to being a micro-budget film. Mackay offers world-class beauty with our rainforest and beaches and so the idea for this script just became more and more doable,” Tania said. The underlying concept for Tribulation came from stories Tania’s step-mother would share about the bible. “The prophecies of the end of days were intriguing to me and has been conceptualised in my mind since then. Coupled with the wave of post-apocalyptic movies that have screened in cinema in the last 10 years, and the theme of religious movies that have come out of Hollywood in the last five years, I felt this was a great opportunity to combine the two themes. “This movie centres around the idea of family, and how when tested in a life-or-death situation, those who we carry in our heart, are the ones that we will face death for. When I wrote this movie, I thought about my brothers and sisters, and how far I would be willing to go to protect them. Anyone who is wanting to watch this movie, I suggest you bring tissues! It tugs at the heart and challenges people’s openness toward the supernatural in a truly unique an organic way.

“It's powerful, tragic, and heroic. It’s different.” Tribulation has a large cast of more than 50 actors, all with a speaking role of some degree. Combined with 17 scene locations, Tania admits is an ambitious ask for a first film. All of the actors are Mackay locals and Tania has been impressed with their pedigree and passion. “Elliot Tate, one of our leads who plays Demarcus, has always wanted to be an actor and even went as far as auditioning for Star Wars over in London. He has been waiting for his big break. “Celine Joubert is another of our leads who plays Eden. Celene is a young and budding professional actress who works hard to involve herself in as many high standard productions that she can. “Jaden Tomkinson is a part-time musician and full time Barber at Jays Barber Co, who has always wanted to pursue an acting career. He plays a lead role, Jacob. “Jools Heikkinen is a talented circus trapeze artist who has always had a deep love for film, and she jumped at the chance to audition for Tribulation. “Jack Petrie is a hidden talent who has just recently surfaced within the performing hub of Mackay. With no real experience he is an absolute natural and it’s exciting to watch him perform. He plays a lead role named Silas. “There are many more to mention, our cast and crew are so incredibly diverse and each person brings their own unique flair to the production,” Tania said.

A movie couldn’t be made without a production team, and Tania is proud of her all-female on-set family. “I have always wanted to start a production company with people who knew me well and who understood my long-term visions. One of my oldest and dearest friends, Debbie Thaiday, accepted the challenge to help me make my first film. She has been by my side the whole time and I would have been lost without her. “Debbie's two daughters are very talented; her youngest in spfx makeup and her eldest in interior decorating, so it seemed only natural for the two girls to head these two departments. Taiya Thaiday, 21 is our supervisor for sets, and Ayehsa Thaiday, 17, is our supervisor for hair and makeup. “My little sister, Shani Townes-Lester, has done modelling in the past and has always had a natural gift in styling. She is our Art Director and also heads our wardrobe department with the talented Molly Struik as our costume designer.

“Lindy McQuaker is our Director of Photography and is a full-time teacher in Multimedia at Mackay Christian College. Lindy's understanding of film has been a breath of fresh air to the team and another filter to visualise scenes through.” TruthEmpire Films applied for a funding grant with Regional Arts Development Funding body and received $10,498 to help make the film. It takes much more for a production of this scale and Tania is thankful to her sister-in-law, Jessina Tass, for coming forward as the film’s first investor. “The women who have backed me in my ambition and desire to make films has been overwhelming and very touching.” Tania’s dream is to take Tribulation to local, national and international film festivals. “We want to break the international barrier with this story, and hope that the merits of the storyline, and the attention to detail; in front of the camera and behind the scenes; will carry us through.”

While Tribulation has a powerful storyline, the movie only touches the sides of what Tania hopes to achieve as a writer and director when it comes to character development. Budget constraints were controlling factors in writing what could be realistically produced and Tania believes that the day that TruthEmpire Films no longer have these constraints, will lead to an exciting future. “TruthEmpire aims to destroy media stereotypes within culture, gender, and religion by producing complex characters that are honest and relatable and above all, diverse. We will tell stories of tragedies and hardships but will show triumphant ways to gain control and victory. “Australian culture has a great humour and an awesome way of using laughter to deal with life. I am eager to share our culture with the world through film in a unique way that is different to the way we are depicted in film right now.”

Leave Your

Ego at the Door

Have you ever noticed what happens when your ego comes with you into a room? It scans the crowd and whispers in your ear that she looks bad or you look the best. It picks your battles and joins in the conversations where you’re sure you are right. It feeds your panic and heightens your need to belong. It creates the feeling that everyone is looking at you even though they are not.

This is because the ego is connected to a person’s sense of self-esteem and self-importance. It is our outward identity, the image we project of ourselves to the rest of the world. It is our constantly running monologue and can often feel like our best friend. We are sure it is on our side; pointing out potential threats, reminding us of previous mistakes and busily thinking of our future. This best friend, however, might need to be kept in-check as it can be prone to exaggeration and often gets misguided. To understand why, it is important to look back to our history as humans on this planet. In primitive times we lived as hunter-gatherers and survival was our only instinct. Our identities and our egos were 100% dedicated to keeping us alive. These days the world is a lot safer, we have evolved remarkably and technology has created a way of life where everything is easy and often put in front of us. As a result our highly tuned survival mind has had to protect us in other ways, often by imagining realities that do not exist. At its worse, it has become the inner voice inside of us; the source of worry, anxiety and suffering. It is constantly pushing us deep into our past, focusing on regrets and mistakes or worrying about an unstable future where we fret about things that haven’t even happened yet like getting a promotion at work or whether we’ll find our soul mate. As a result, this form of ego creates a struggle within that feels, for many of us, like we are unable to live in the present. There are so many people in this predicament that a whole movement for

www.corelife.com.au 70 70 www.corelife.com.au

mindfulness has been created and there are popular classes for meditation and yoga everywhere we look. This way of thinking is so popular because some people understand the power of the ego when it is used in the right way. When we take control of our ego we can work with it to enhance, even transform our lives. The best way to achieve this is by following a path to self-awareness. There are a multitude of paths to take to achieve this, from mindfulness to regular exercise, anything that brings us into the present moment. Another important aspect to achieving this is recognising our inner-talk. Witnessing how we talk to ourselves, how we think of others and also taking note of the type of subjects we think about. When we slow our thoughts down and become aware of them we can identify what we like and do not like to think about and start taking control of that. A bit like a diet for the mind, we can then choose the most wholesome, most nutritious food to put inside. In addition to this we can begin to use the ego as a tool for manifestation, which is the art of bringing the things we want into our lives through the power of thought. This is a much better use of our highly tuned survival mind than allowing it to take control our thoughts with unnecessary worry about the past and present. So, the next time you walk into the room, try and leave your ego at the door. Instead of self-doubt and anxiety, think of the calm and present moment, remember you can control your inner-dialogue and train your ego to pick a better conversation.

MINDBODYSOUL

WAYS TO ELIMINATE A NEGATIVE EGO 1. Choose love. Remember; love is the only emotion, fear is an illusion. As soon as you have a fearful or anxious thought, tell yourself “love did not create this thought, and so it is not real.” Gabrielle Berstein. 2. Never complain. The ego always wants to improve on the current moment. Don’t let it draw you down that path. Breathe. Find something beautiful. Focus. 3. Be grateful. List in your mind all the things you are grateful for. Your family, your health, your house, your job. Take time to really appreciate what you have. This trains your ego to focus on the positive.

HOW TO KNOW YOUR EGO IS IN CONTROL 1. You feel excited when gossiping about other people’s flaws 2. You won’t back down from a discussion until you have ‘won’ 3. You constantly compare yourself to other people 4. You feel jealous when other people do well 5. You talk about yourself for 10 minutes before asking another how they are 6. You’d rather win than do your best 7. You often sulk when you don’t win instead of being proud of your attempt to do your best

8. You set yourself impossible goals and then beat yourself up when you don’t reach them

9. You blame others when things don’t go your way

my first

8 weeks

I knew this challenge would change me physically, but what I wasn’t prepared for was how much it would change me mentally. But this has been a good thing. Since stepping through the door of Whitsunday Martial Arts through to completing my first eightweek challenge, I’m excited to share my journey progress with you.

“I lost weight and gained so much more!”

Those of you who follow my Facebook page – Finding Forty with Rebecca Douthwaite – will have seen my ups and downs along the way. The challenges many of us face as working mums and dads, through to the all-too-real struggle of getting up early on cold mornings to train. But every day I pushed myself to get out of bed led to something wonderful. A sense of

accomplishment, the forming of great friendships and a new-found zest for life. That excites me because re-discovering my happiness was at the core of this journey for me, and I can genuinely say that I’m happy! But my journey hasn’t finished yet. For starters, I’m not forty yet!

While those numbers are exciting, it’s the real-life changes that have changed my outlook on life. I’ve discovered a whole new wardrobe and this has been one of the greatest gifts of all. The favourite clothes I held onto even when they didn’t fit any more, the clothes I bought that were a size too small that I figured I would fit one day… this is an accumulation of fashion which has been hidden for years, that now I can wear again! But even better than the clothes, is the way I feel. www.corelife.com.au 72 72 www.corelife.com.au

I get out of bed with purpose. My housework is done and beds made before I step out of the door. My training is now my routine. I’m generally happier. I used to shut myself off from the world on weekends and sit on the couch eating crap food and watching Netflix, now I feel like I’m actually living. I don’t drink as much as I used to. Wine and cigarettes were once my coping mechanisms to deal with stress, but now, martial arts or going

for a run is what I turn to when I need to clear my head. The biggest realisation for me is that you’re never too old to make a change. I’ve just started my second eight-week challenge with Whitsunday Martial Arts, I’m already excited to think of where I will be when I next update you on my journey to finding forty.

Bec

THE EIGHT WEEKS ARE OVER AND HOW DID THE PARTICIPANTS DO? 22 people punched and pushed their way through a motivating eight-weeks of movement at Whitsunday Martial Arts. While they came from different walks of life, all had a common purpose of getting fitter and feeling better about themselves. TRAINERS, ANTON ZAFIR AND DAN ZEALAND, FILLED US IN ON THE RESULTS. “We had mums, students, business people, tradies, nurses and chefs. There was such a wide spectrum of people who pushed their boundaries to complete the challenge,” Anton said. We had some incredible results. Our highest weight loss competitor shed a staggering 15kgs in eight weeks and is continuing his loss after the completion of the challenge. We had competitors double their beep-test levels, double their maximum push-up test and more than double their sit-up test levels. Fitness and weight loss aside, we had competitors use the program as a catalyst to give up smoking, cut alcohol consumption and reduce fast-food cravings from learning how to prepare nutritionally optimum meals,” Dan said. WHAT WAS THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGE THE GROUP FACED OVER THE EIGHT WEEKS? “Different aspects over the eight weeks challenged some participants more than others. The stairs and the hill I think were great breakers of the challengers, but it also showed them what they were truly capable of,” Anton said. DAN SAID THAT THE STAIRS PROVIDED ONE OF THE GREATEST MOMENTS OF THE CHALLENGE. One afternoon around week six, the team climbed 79,456 steps collectively in a group training session. It was incredibly inspiring to see these people slowly realize what they’re capable of once they set their mind to it. They went through all of the mental and physical barriers along the way, however, slowly the team started to unite and push each other through the ‘walls’. There were certainly tears of joy at the end of the challenge and it’s those moments that are most rewarding to us as coaches.” THE CHALLENGE IS DESIGNED TO BREAK COMPETITORS PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, BUT THEN BUILD THEM UP TO BECOME EMOTIONALLY STRONGER. “To see the way challengers hold themselves, become stronger and gain confidence in their abilities at the end of the challenge is amazing. It’s tough, but the positive changes that result are very rewarding and the reason Dan and I do what we do,” Anton said. HOW DID BEC DO AS PART OF HER FINDING FORTY CHALLENGE? Anton said, “Bec made some great improvements both physically and mentally. This is just the beginning for her and I can’t wait to see the next level she pushes herself to.” “One of Bec’s greatest achievements in her eight-week challenge was to see her confidence grow toward new martial arts. She stepped outside of her comfort zone and uncovered a love for boxing. During physical sparring she is more than happy to mix it with the seniors and give as good as she gets, sometimes better,” Dan said. Another eight-week challenge at Whitsunday Martial Arts is currently underway, check out our next edition of Core Life Magazine for the results!

THE CLOCK As Nerium International promotes; the better you look the better you feel, and the better you feel the more you can enjoy life.

What does Age IQ™ Night Cream do?

This philosophy is one of the core beliefs of Rebecca Douthwaite in her Finding Forty transformation, who included a skincare regime into her journey.

• Transform tired-looking skin

“Before my Finding Forty journey, I was a bit relaxed on my skincare routine. I bounced between products and never really found anything that made me feel great. My friend, Caroline Adele, approached me to see if I would use Nerium skincare as part of my quest to look and feel great leading up for my fortieth. I’m so glad she did, my skin has never looked or felt better,” Rebecca said. Nerium’s Age IQ™ Night Cream has been Bec’s go-to moisturiser. This cream is one of the best items on the market in the defense against the appearance of ageing. Powered by breakthroughs that harness the best of science and nature, Age IQ™ Night Cream is a next-generation, advanced age-fighting product designed to help revitalise and regulate your skin, so you wake to a younger, healthier-looking reflection. Why does it work so well? Nerium’s products are powered by proprietary technology that harnesses the best from science and nature. It uses exclusive, patented ingredients with proven antioxidants, peptides, plant extracts and vitamins to craft products that target multiple signs of ageing. It’s a customised approach that allows Nerium to develop products that go beyond addressing the signs of ageing to also target the underlying causes.

www.corelife.com.au 76 76 www.corelife.com.au

Age IQ™ Night Cream contains ingredients that:

• Help reduce the appearance of wrinkles • Help instantly tighten and firm skin’s appearance • Address existing and future signs of ageing • Work to remove skin-drying urban stressors accumulated during the day • Improve skin clarity and radiance, and provide smoother skin texture

So what does Bec think? “Before I started the skincare regime with Caroline and Nerium, I was convinced I would need Botox as part of my journey to feel younger. But through drinking a lot more water and using the skincare products daily, my lines and wrinkles are far less pronounced. I have a youthful, dewy complexion and my pigmentation has evened itself out. I used to feel that I had to wear makeup before leaving the house, but now, I honestly think my skin looks better without it! If these results can happen within eight weeks, I’m looking forward to seeing what the next eight weeks brings.” For more information on how to turn back the clock on your skin, contact Caroline Adele via her facebook page www.facebook.com/carolineadele.theluxesociety

Hearing aids and the winter cold Some tips to ensure you get the best out of your hearing devices throughout winter. While most would agree that Queensland’s winter is a mild one in comparison to other locations around our country, it can still get pretty cold, wet and miserable. Some regional centres regularly drop to minimums in the single digits and even at times heads in to the negative territories. We also usually think of our winter months as dry months but, on average, we will still see rainfall on over twenty days throughout winter. This is when the cold and wet can play havoc with your hearing devices but these tips can help ensure you get the best out of your devices. Ensure you keep your hearing devices dry There’s nothing worse for your hearing devices and their batteries than a bit of moisture. While many new devices come with excellent water resistance

it is always better to be sure than sorry. In winter we often move from one temperature extreme to another and this can cause condensation inside your hearing aid including in the battery compartment. Before you turn your hearing devices off at night, make sure to check them over for any moisture—including inside the battery compartment. Dry your device and any batteries with a soft dry cloth. If you have a Behind-TheEar style hearing aid with tubes, ensure you remove any moisture in the tubes as well. Remove the tube from the hearing aid and blow air through it to remove the moisture. You can use a can of compressed air available from stationery supply stores to do this as well. One last point, always ensure

you dry your ears really well after a shower or a swim before you insert your hearing aids. This can go a long way towards minimising the risk of damage to your hearing aids. Invest in a dehumidifier if you don’t have one. This is a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment that will get rid of any moisture in your hearing aids overnight while you sleep. You simply pop your hearing aids into the small dehumidifying box when you go to bed and it goes to work drawing out any moisture present in your hearing aids. In a pinch, the old trick of placing your hearing aid in a bag of clean, dry uncooked rice may also work as the rice will absorb any moisture present in the device.

aids don’t work. Even more frustrating when you are not quite sure what’s wrong with them. Is it the battery? Is something blocking the microphone? Have they been moisture damaged? Do some trouble shooting with some new dry batteries, replace the wax guards and ensure there is no wax or dust clogging the mic or vent. If they still don’t work or only work intermittently then head straight to your audiologist to have them looked at and repaired if need be.

A Hair-free Lifestyle There’s little on this earth more cumbersome than the daily and weekly upkeep of hair removal. With so many parts of the body requiring upkeep, it’s little wonder that men and women everywhere search for more permanent solutions to achieve smoothness. If you’re tired of prickly stubble the day after shaving but not quite masochistic enough for waxing, you're probably a prime candidate for permanent hair removal.

Electrolysis, IPL, laser…What’s the difference? IPL uses a broad spectrum of high-intensity light which is emitted at multiple wavelengths. Laser hair removal emits a single, focused wavelength which is said to be optimised for maximum follicle absorption. Electrolysis takes a more exact and methodical approach. A technician inserts a needle into each hair follicle. Then, a low-level zap of electricity is sent through the needle to destroy the growth point. The greatest point to consider is that all three options will require multiple sessions to achieve long-term hair reduction. IPL sessions can cover a greater coverage area in less time due

to its ability to target multiple hairs at the same time, but it’s not suitable for all skin pigmentation and works best on darker hair. All three have been proven to be effective in long-term hair reduction, but all three also pose varying levels of potential risk and side-effects. Some treatments are better suited to those with paler skin while others are more effective with lighter hair. The best option in any scenario is to ensure your beauty technician or skin clinic is highly qualified in the field of hair removal and seek their advice in the best option to suit your hair and skin. Other factors, including hormonal imbalance, may mean that permanent hair-reduction may be harder to achieve. Women with polycystic ovaries and other similar medical conditions may find they require more sessions to lessen their hair re-growth with no guarantee that it won’t return over time. Knowing your options, understanding the potential side-effects and understanding which solution will work best for you, is your best chance at achieving a long-term carefree hair-free lifestyle.

Meet the Executive Chef BRADLEY MARTIN

at D aydream Island Resort

After spending two years opening the luxe Taumeasina Island Resort in Samoa, Bradley Martin relished the opportunity to return to Australia and help the Whitsundays recover after Cyclone Debbie. Adelaide-born, Bradley spent most of his life in Queensland and the NT. His schooling was in Charters Towers and he completed his Certificate in Cookery at TAFE in Alice Springs. But he says that it was the influence of great chefs that came into his life 10 years after his graduation who really shaped his career and skills. “Bruno Gentile, David Cannon and Michelin Star Chef Romain Bapst, these amazing Chefs really refined my cooking and helped me understand what being a chef really means. I still wear white buttons on my chef jacket as I don’t think we ever stop learning. Some of the chefs I know have Michelin Stars, Black Hat awards and many accolades, none of them wear black buttons as they all respect that we will always learn something new tomorrow.”

and the land, so I fully understand what it takes to produce good food long before the chef receives it. Supporting local food production and helping to teach our youth to support farmers is a small step we can take to help the region recover.” Who are some interesting people you have cooked for? “I have cooked for Prince Charles, Peter Cosgrove, John Howard and The Prime Ministers of the south pacific, all 22 of them at last year's South Pacific forum.”

“The conceptual ideas under development are really exciting. The Asian Fusion restaurant will have up to five different nations represented, harmoniously blended into delicate dishes defined with technically sound European methods. The Modern Australian Restaurant will provide new, unique, vibrant and well-balanced flavoursome dishes. Daydream Island Resort will also present a new burger concept, a themed buffet and other menu’s in bar and lobby areas that will offer everything from tapas to izakaya for all-day dining options. Essentially a cuisine option to delight every guest,” Bradley said.

“I love all the European chefs, my favourite chef in the world is Regis Marcon. Regis is a French chef, he won the Prix Tattinger in 1989, prix Brillat Savarin in 1992 and Bocuse Dor 1995. The Bocus Dor is the hardest international culinary competition in the world, many great Australian chefs have competed in this competition. Most notably, George Calombaris won the national competition the same year as I competed, he beat me and won the right to represent Australia in France.”

Where did your passion for food come from? “From a young age I was exposed to farmers

What is your secret weapon in the kitchen? “My Butchers steel, a chef needs to have sharp knives to be able to perform his best work, so I always have my butchers steel right beside me.”

If you could choose 1 restaurant in the world to dine at, where would it be and what would you order? “My favorite restaurants, I have two, El Cellar de can Roca, one of the best restaurants in the world in Girona, Spain. This food is at the very front of modern cuisine, run by three brothers. “My Other Favourite restaurant, owned by Michelin Starred Chef and Vice President for Bocuse d’Or Australia and Acadamie culinaire de France is Romain Bapst. I am lucky enough to have worked with Romain and competed under his guidance. If you get to Brisbane, try a beautiful lunch or dinner at Lutece French bistro in Bardon; delicate, simple flavours cooked to perfection.”

Meet our Duty Manager SHANA BROWN FISH D’VINE Shana is one of the shining stars at popular Airlie Beach restaurant Fish D’vine. She landed the job there during her first week in Airlie, three and half years ago, when she was just 17 years old. Proving that young, motivated people are rewarded for hard work and dedication, Shana has been promoted to the management team and loves the challenges of her new role. “I am now a proud Duty Manager and wouldn’t want it any other way! I feel so passionate about the company, how it works behind scenes and the incredible people that make it the amazing place it is,” said Shana. “I love that I have learnt and grown so much here and know that every day I’m going to have such a different experience. It keeps me on my toes and I love engaging with new faces and customers.” Originally from a small rural town west of Mackay, Shana grew-up with one corner shop nearby and a total of 80 students at her school. Hard work and success is obviously in the genes though, her mum runs picturesque holiday park, Kinchant Waters, in the Pioneer Valley and Shana’s father is the owner of a successful mining company in Mackay.

We sat down with Shana to find out more. Tell us about Fish D’vine I work mainly in the restaurant as front of house duty manager interacting with patrons and the rest of the team and I also get to work in beautiful locations across the region with D’vine Catering when large events are running. What are your hobbies? In my spare time I’m embracing the Airlie Beach lifestyle, is that a hobby? I also love drawing and photography! What’s your Favourite item on the menu at Fish D’Vine: It has to be Mudcrab! And of course, you can’t have a Mudcrab without one of our famous mojitos! What’s your favourite meal in your kitchen? Anything that reminds me of home! Favourite cooking show: I find the shows by the owners of Fish D’vine to be very innovative and more up close and personal than television. I really enjoy being involved with either Bec Clark’s The Food Junkie “Cooking Master Classes” or Kev Collins “Bait to Plate”.

Meet the Barista

Jessica Wilson

at MACKAY METRO IT’S BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER! Mackay Metro has re-opened with a fresh new team, new delicious coffee blend and a seasonal range of food and refreshments. Owner and operator of Mackay Metro, Jessica Wilson, is a Mackay local and award-winning barista who wanted to breathe life back into the popular establishment. “We love to support local and sustainable enterprises, sourcing a great coffee blend was important but pairing it with fresh local milk is what makes a real difference. “The beans we choose to use is “Fix” by Grinders. It is a fourorigin blend that comes from Rainforest alliance certified farms sourced from Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Costa Rica and Mexico. We love the coffee due to its smooth and creamy flavour that when paired with Eungelladale milk is an incredible smooth, nutty caramelised brew.” Jess lived in Dysart until she was five, when her parents moved to Mackay. She later went to Brisbane at 18 and began her career as a waitress. She was fascinated by the latte art of the barista, who took Jess under their wing and taught her the tips and tricks of making a great coffee. Jess then completed a barista training course and hasn’t looked back since.

What are some of the art creations you can make on a cup of coffee? “I like doing all types of art from hearts, rosetta’s, swans through to 3D art, it really just depends on my mood at the time. I also love to see what other people upload on social media and use it as inspiration to try and come up with more creative and intricate designs. Although they don’t always go my way, haha.” What barista awards have you won? “Whilst in Brisbane my manager at the time asked me to enter the barista competition between independently owned café’s where I placed second in 2009, and first in 2010. They based the competition on coffee origin knowledge, timing and taste. In 2015 I was voted first place in the Jamaica Blue latte artist of the year by judges that ran across the seven countries it operates in.” What’s on the menu at Mackay Metro? “We have fresh daily sandwiches and toasties, pancakes, breakfast wraps and muffins, soup from locally-sourced produce, raisin toast, milkshakes and one of our most popular drinks is cane sugar juice. We freshly press the cane to order and serve it over ice straight or mixed with local fruit. It is refreshing, delicious and has many health benefits. You can’t get any more Mackay than fresh cane juice!” If you could sit and have a coffee anywhere in the world, where would it be? “Japan for sure! It's always been number one on my bucket list and I really hope I get to go one day.” www.corelife.com.au 87
