to the Whitsunday’s - no longer Australia’s best kept real estate secret As locals, we know our markets follow similar patterns to Sydney and Melbourne, both in bouyant and negative times. If you have been watching the real estate market with a view to capitalise on the bottom of the market, there has never been a better time. Why? Two bedroom apartments, previously listed at at $1,150,000 are now selling from $650,000. Sales volumes have increased consecutively for the past 8 quarters and as the precursor to price growth, this is a good indicator of future property value. The final 10 apartments in The Boathouse are priced to sell this winter. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime investment opportunity.

June is here and brings with it the end of another financial year. Although the year ahead looks promising and we are starting to feel more positive, as both a consumer and business owner, there are still some challenges ahead for us all. To celebrate making it through another tough year and to acknowledge the amazing strength, passion and drive of women in business throughout our region, this month Core Life is proud to showcase some of these inspirational ladies in our Women In Business “It’s a Girl Thing” feature. Not to take anything at all away from the gentleman, this feature was designed to inspire women and everything it means to be a woman, a boss, a mother, a wife, a girlfriend, a daughter, a friend, a sister in most cases, all of the above. For us ladies to understand that we are not alone and to acknowledge other women who are taking on the world and leaving nothing behind. To stop, listen and be inspired to keep going.

Manage yourself like an employee
Based on my experience in business, there is so much I wish someone could have told me beforehand. But some of the best advice for me to pass on would be: manage yourself like an employee, be accountable to yourself and your business plan; whatever you think you’re going to make, expect less and whatever you expect it to cost, plan for more; don’t spend the profits made, always put money back in to build your business; and don’t ever think its going to be easy, but remember the more you put into your business, the more you will benefit. Kerry Foxon, ANZ Mobile Lending
TALK ON THE STREET
Realise you can’t please all of the people all the time.
Love, laugh and dream! Love... What do you do, love the people around you and fundamentally love people. They are your customers and the reason you are there. Realise you can’t please all of the people all the time. Laugh.. Laugh with your staff, with your customers and mostly learn to laugh at yourself. Otherwise you’ll go crazy! It helps to maintain some semblance of work/life balance. It’s so easy to spend ray moment either physically or mentally “at work”. Dream Big because it helps to have a goal! Make it as big as you can dream, just remember to make small steps to get there

As the business grows you grow, and vice versa.
Never stop learning: We never stop learning in business, it’s always changing and we never stop educating ourselves, nothing happens overnight it has been a product of years of learning and making mistakes. But it is all part and parcel of running business. “As the business grows you grow, and vice versa. I have learnt equally from other business owners, who have been prepared to share their setbacks, as well as the successes in business. These experiences continue to guide me in business today. Building genuine relationships with our customers, listening to their needs helps us as team find gaps in the market and industry, and then exercising hard work enables us to build our goals. We remain focussed on the people, and the business just follows. I have taken many notes to help shape my own style, which I know will always be a work in progress. Watching other leaders thrive and take their roles far beyond their initial capabilities is something that still drives my hunger to learn more. Even though time seems to be passing on each year, I have welcomed 2014 and all the opportunities it brings. Hopefully it will be a fruitful one for the entire Region. mei elson, north queensland glass

Our Region, Our Future what lies ahead?
The region we live in is simply beautiful. It is abundant in natural assets, from the glistening islands of the Whitsundays and the verdant subtropical rainforest, to the deep coal seams in the Bowen Basin, bringing wealth and prosperity. We are a flourishing region, full of opportunity for both lifestyle and investment.
“
“
According to the latest Tourism and Events Queensland data, Mackay experienced a drop in domestic and international visitors last year, however that trend is expected to turn around with new marketing strategies for the area.
We have one of the best lifestyles in the world, a beautiful climate and a competitive business environment. Our region is also one of the largest contributors to sugar cane production in Australia. But despite an abundance of wealth opportunity, our region’s rise and fall can be determined by a number of outside factors, from a turbulent wet season, that can bring devastating floods and cyclones, to a high Australian dollar, affecting our tourism and coal export opportunities. When one of our main industries is hit hard, we all feel the pinch. So what is in store for our future? Unfortunately, even the country’s top economists have varying views on how quickly we will rise from the current downturn we are experiencing. Some believe it will get worse before it gets better, but they all seem to have one opinion in common, which is that it WILL improve. The only question remaining is when?
Mining
From the inland mining towns on the Isaac Plains, to the blue-water river city of Mackay, when the mining industry faces tough times, we all feel the pinch. Riding the waves of the mining industry is not an uncommon thing. Those businesses that have remained successful are the ones who prepare for the quiet time by utilising wealth accumulated during the more affluent time, and those who are prepared to adapt. While some areas of the local mines look as though they are slowing down, other areas are certainly picking up, suggesting that mining in this region is far from dead. Eagle Downs Coal Management Pty Ltd is establishing a sustainable underground longwall mine, with the potential to produce up to eight million tonnes of coking coal annually. Construction on this mine is now underway, with local contractors benefiting from the work. The estimated mine life for Eagle Downs is 47 years, giving a positive projection for future exports. When the mine begins coal extraction, it will initially create approximately 400 new jobs. BHP Billiton chief executive officer, Andrew Mackenzie, reported its Central Queensland mines exceeded production records, by surpassing 11.4 million tonnes of coal for the first three months of 2014. Despite the economic slowdown in China, there is still demand for steel-
12 www.corelife.com.au
making coal, with BHP’s production up 24% for the current financial year. BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance project Caval Ridge is well underway, projected to mine 5.5 million tonnes of coal per year over 30 years. The project ruffled feathers within the local community of Moranbah, when the company announced that the workforce would be predominantly fly-in fly-out staffed. Local workers situated in Moranbah wouldn’t be allowed to apply for positions at the mine, despite it being located only 15 minutes away. Business owners in Moranbah remain positive, as there are still benefits to the local community from a FIFO workforce based nearby.
Tourism
Tourism is becoming increasingly important to Mackay’s economy, and during times of economic hardship due to a mining downturn, it is more important than ever to capatilise on what is unique about the Mackay region. According to the latest Tourism and Events Queensland data, Mackay experienced a drop in domestic and international visitors last year, however that trend is expected to turn around with new marketing strategies for the area. Our diverse and attractive holiday destination appeals to a wide range of visitors, but it’s expressing what is truly unique about Mackay, the Isaac and Whitsunday regions which will peak the curiosity of visitors. Self-discovery tourism will be promoted for the Mackay region, appealing to the rising number of campervan holiday makers. The chance to selfdrive to seemingly un-touched destinations, to see a platypus swimming in the wild, to picnic on a deserted beach, these factors will appeal to the travelling market. Tourism for the Whitsundays was given a recent boost in exposure, with the cast of Modern Family filming an extract for a recent episode in the region. The show, which is aired to millions of fans worldwide, captured the cast snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef and gave publicity to the world-famous Hayman Island. Confidence in Mackay is building, with the construction of new hotel and apartment complexes underway in the CBD. Business tourism has remained strong, and experienced a 2.2% increase in 2013. In May 2014,
many CBD hotels reported capacity bookings for week nights, showing that the city is still a popular location for business and that demand for accommodation is still growing. The development of business tourism, including pursuing the lucrative convention market, are key factors to the city’s future growth.
Real Estate
The housing market in Mackay is still feeling the impact from the economic downturn relating to the slowdown of growth in the mining industry. An increase in FIFO workers has seen an abundance of properties available in the region, both for sale and for rent, making it very much a buyer’s market. However, there is still a steady flow of houses being purchased and rented, meaning that vendors will have to offer more, to attract buyers and tenants. Older style homes face stiff competition from new subdivisions, where an excess of new houses have been placed on the rental market. Renters can now enter a brand new, three or four bedroom home, with desirable features, such as double garaging, master bedroom with ensuite, separate entertainment living area and walk in wardrobe, for as low as $300 per week. Similar homes for rent that are still asking for in excess of $400 per week, are facing a difficult time finding tenants, as renters are becoming savvy at negotiating the features they desire, for the weekly amount they wish to pay. Rental prices in the Isaac Region have dropped more significantly, as mining job losses have created an excess of accommodation available in mining towns. Two years ago, a modest property could fetch $1,500 per week in rent. Last year this dropped to $600 per week and, currently, this has dropped further, with renters not expecting to pay more than $250 or $300 per week for a three bedroom home. With historically low interest rates, now is a good time for a first-home buyer to seriously look at entering the property market. The removal of the First Home Owners Grant created a dip in the interest of first time buyers, but, with housing prices remaining low, more interest is being shown by those looking to invest in their future. There are signs that the market is picking back up. There is increased interest in both Mackay and the rural community and land owners remain positive that the situation will improve in the near future.

BUSINESS OWNERS: your greatest asset is your health Being a business owner I understand the pressures that are put on us: to work hard, set goals, remain strong willed and function optimally, all day, every day. Many of my clients are business owners and I respect the fact that they take the time out of their schedule to improve their health. They like a quick plan, effective medicines and goals set for them. Mental clarity is a fantastic asset in business, to manage time, be creative and handle stress. Mental clarity comes from being healthy. How long can we expect our bodies to handle the pressure if we don’t put effort into the way we eat, drink and exercise? T hrough blood testing and detailed questioning, I help people understand why their body is stressedor fatigued, why they r skin complaints, why they are suffering digestive problemso are overweightor suffering problems with memory or mental clarity and then provide them with easy steps and strong herbal medicines that bring about change quickly.
Put your health first, it’s your greatest asset!

A new client came into see us. they had a small business which we had helped set up a computerised inventory system for and which had now given them the tools they needed to manage their business better. They wanted to expand and open a bigger outlet in a different location, but were doubtful that they could afford it. We gave them some steps to carry out first, such as costing the fit out, computers, cabling, insurance, signage, negotiating the rent on the new premises, rent free periods etc, talking to suppliers for help with opening specials, product stands etc. When they had all of that information we would prepare a cash flow forecast, plug in all the known expenses and then estimate the sales based on reasonable growth, given the location and marketing activity. We explained what the bank would finance and what they wouldn’t finance so they could calculate the amount they would need to fund themselves.
They were concerned about whether their bank would support them as they had had difficulties getting a home loan because they were in business. We told them not to worry as we would put them in touch with a very good banker who would help them out and things which previously hadn’t been funded could be. “Oh”, they said. We wondered if we had the wrong bank”. “Wrong bank? Wrong accountant” we replied. They are now confident that their dream will come true. If you have a good accountant and a good bank manager, and they work well together, all things become possible and that is why it is worthwhile strengthening those relationships.

Are you in debt denial? Outwardly, you look like you have got it all together... You’re immaculately presented from head to toe, from your collagen-filled forehead to those sparkling Jimmy Choo’s. Your new convertible has heads turning at the lights and you swagger into work swinging your newest Prada handbag. Your rent is a little pricey, but you just couldn’t turn down those ocean views. In fact, thinking about beautiful ocean views, isn’t it time to book another holiday to Bali? Yes, everybody admires your lifestyle but, as the bills start rolling in, you begin to realise that your debt nearly totals your entire paycheck. You put on a brave face at the bar after work, praying that no-one suggests that it’s your turn to pay for a round. Then you get invited to a girl’s weekend in Sydney. How can you refuse? Oh well, another credit card couldn’t hurt too much. Besides, you’re probably due for a pay rise at some stage, right? The longer you remain in denial about your mountain of debt, the harder it will be to get rid of. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that your income will miraculously increase, or that you’re bound to win the lottery. Debt not only damages your finances, but it can have serious implications on your health, friendships and relationships. Most people don’t talk about debt openly, and perhaps this is half of the problem. It’s no secret that it is a widespread problem, which is getting worse by the day. The attitude of “I want it now” is far more damaging than people realise. It’s “the norm” to have a brand new cell phone and a maxed out credit card.
If you’re in debt denial, you will relate to more than one of the following telltale factors: Your debt has increased over the past year.
Just because you can afford the repayments, doesn’t justify increasing your debt. While you are constantly paying interest and not gaining it, you will always fall behind. Make plans to eliminate your debt faster, even if that means sacrificing luxuries.
You use debt to pay debt.
If you struggle with your repayments so much that you need to borrow more to make the minimum payments, then undoubtedly you’re in trouble. Look toward refinancing at a lower interest rate, then change your lifestyle to enable you to pay more off your debt, faster.
You justify your debt based on comparing yourself to others.
What a sad world we live in, if we are all getting into debt just to impress each other. Just because a good friend is jetting off to Paris doesn’t mean you should consider a loan to do the same. The most impressive thing you can do is start acting like an adult, stop spending on what you can’t afford and put a plan in place to eliminate your debt.
You have no idea how much debt you’re actually in.
You know it’s more than what you would like to admit, but you actually have no clue. If you were to sit down and look at how much of your pay check is wasted on interest payments, you would probably cry yourself to sleep. It may feel good to splurge, but getting your finances under control now, will give you more money to enjoy later. Plus you will get rid of your stress and worry. Now that’s worth making an effort for. You know that pretending that ‘everything will be ok’, won’t actually fix your money woes. Talking to someone, and asking for help, is a great place to start. Chances are that someone close to you may have also felt the heavy burden of debt denial. Get a plan in place to eliminate your debt for good. It’s time to stop denying the debt before it becomes a drama. Discuss it with a friend, family member or finance expert and destroy it before it destroys you.

Budget – 2% Debt Levy. How does it affect you? If you are earing in excess of $180,000 p.a., your top marginal tax rate will increase to 48.5%. i.e., almost half of everything you earn over $180,000 will be income tax.

As a nation we will creep into a better financial position due to several factors now being indexed to inflation. The reason? The REAL rate of inflation is higher than the official rate!
The good news is that our country needs a tough budget, so as a nation we can start to live within our means. To delay will only put an impost on our children and grandchildren. The further GOOD NEWS, for those earning in in excess of $180,000 p.a, is that if they structure their residential investment portfolio correctly, the relative TAX REFUND WILL BE INCREASED. Whilst I generally encourage clients to pay off their residential loans with principal & interest, there is an argument for interest only in arrears on your investment properties, if you are putting every effort into reducing the mortgage on your primary place of residence. Recently we had an $180,000 plus client refinance his 30 year home loan from 5.88% P&I to 4.88% P&I, leaving repayments “as is”, and reducing the term of the loan by 6 years. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank is the 5th largest bank in Australia, a full service bank which started the ‘community banking’ model. In our region we have a very unique and successful business, the Sarina Community Bank® branch, which is a leader in being bigger than a bank. A bank with exceptional customer service, as well as the products that you need, from home loans, business banking and agriculture to savings accounts and wealth advice. A bank that has contributed in excess of $1 million into its community, with decisions made locally, benefiting more than 200 organisations that are in much need of assistance. We can help you like any other bank can, but we are bigger than that, because our profits are spent locally within the community. How many other banks do this? Our customers say they love being a part of this philosophy. They love to know that the interest on their home loan, or their banking in general, is assisting a much bigger cause. Call Branch Manager Roanna Brady today, to discuss how to become a part of this exciting community banking experience.
Now that is big.
“There is always a nice feel when you walk into the branch, like you are surrounded by people who genuinely care about you and your business.” “I receive prompt and efficient service, which is important when your own business keeps you busy enough as it is. It’s switching your banking to us. But it’s bigger than that. It means supporting a unique Rural Skills Centre, Ted Malone MP Rural Skills Centre Sarina. Being bigger is not just about size, it’s about your actions. We’re not a big bank by standard measures, but we’re probably bigger than you think. We’re part of Bendigo Bank – so we can help you with everything you expect from a big bank. But in the things that matter, we’re even bigger than that. Community Banking is about the good that money can bring. We know that successful customers make for a successful community. And that’s why we set out to make both.
Our bank is owned by the community. We earn revenue from our banking business. And we get to decide how it gets spent for the benefit of all. This means funding for the Ted Malone MP Rural Skills Centre for our local community, a centre that has been in operation for 10 years providing training and learning opportunties for Sarina and District’s young people. It means new class rooms for students for the core of english and maths and more. A new shed to learn engineering including metal
fabrication, welding, lathe and sheet metal work and facilities to grow things through horticulture, permaculture, aquaponics, and hydroponics. It also means how to grow sugar cane for our farming industry So just by banking with us, you automatically become part of something bigger. Bigger than a bank. Business Apps Do you need one? Businesses have been asking themselves this question for some time now, with most having a tough time even deciphering whether they would benefit from implementing a business application (app) or not. Rest assured there are many benefits of going down this track, as it becomes an increasingly popular interface for businesses to engage with clients on a daily basis. It is so important to make sure your business stands out from the crowd, so what better way to set a new standard than with the introduction of a brand new business app specific to your business or industry? Larger companies, that have in recent times been considered “ahead of the game”, have brought it upon themselves to develop an app, and now this opportunity is within reach of all business. Cavalier Homes is an excellent example. They have recently added the capacity for their clients to login and check the status of their homes, as they are built, online as well as being able to review plans, timelines and other key details. It is only a matter of time before this becomes an app! Whilst there are so many benefits of creating an app for your business, one of the largest is the level of communication you can have with your clients. Not only can you now reach them through social media, but by introducing an app that is appealing for your target market, you are
effectively setting up a shop front on their smart phone! Your products would be available for purchase at the touch of a button, with additional information about your business embedded into the application, to create a familiarity and trust between yourself and your client. The possibilities are endless.
BE GREEN. GROW AN APP. If you would like more information on creating apps or marketing your business, contact Tolita on 0488117728 or tolita@8seconds.com.au. www.8seconds.com.au
A great quote I recently heard, ‘You are green and growing or ripe and rotting’. With online playing such a major part in the landscape of marketing these days, businesses who are not represented online are going to be left behind. Who is to say that within the next 12-18 months the same can be said of businesses who haven’t created their own app for the ease and benefit of their customers? Think about it, how often do you look at your phone for information every day?

taxing times
As 30 June 2014 is almost upon us, it is important that we make the most of the tax saving opportunities before the financial year ticks over. If you are an individual tax payer, consider prepaying up to 12 months of expenses. This might include expenses such as work travel, insurance premiums, professional memberships, tools and even work uniforms. You should also consider deferring income to next year. This might include items such as a bonus or payout etc. Even receiving bank interest in July 2014 may make a difference to your tax. If you have a rental property, it might be worth considering prepaying 12 months of costs such as interest, insurance and rates. If you decide to visit your investment property (this is tax deductible if it is the main purpose of the trip), carry out jobs such as painting, minor repairs and general maintenance to the property. As long as these repairs are not seen as capital improvements, these will attract a 100% tax write off. If you are a small business operator, consider maximising your super contributions and ensure that the premiums are paid well before 30 June to get the tax deduction. These have to be received by your superfund before 30 June. You can’t use the excuse that the cheque is in the mail, as that won’t work. As with individuals, consider prepaying 12 months of expenses such as interest, insurance premiums, lease and other business expenses. Consider your tax structure as there may be advantages in setting up a Partnerships, Company or Trust structure. This may give you the opportunity to save on tax and share it with the family. Watch out for those tax schemes which come out prior to June . These need to get the tick off from the ATO before you invest. Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Whatever you do, seek professional advice!

Planning for tax time David Whitson - B.Com CPA CTA Whitson Dawson Hundreds of small businesses around Mackay and the Whitsundays pay unnecessary dollars to the tax office every year due to no planning or advice from their Accountant. Whilst it’s only June (and most people don’t even think about their tax until the week before the 30th June) you have to give tax planning some thought now to achieve any positive outcome. Effective tax planning from specialised Accountants can save small businesses thousands of dollars every year. Small business owners need advice from a proactive Accountant who specialises in ‘total’ small business tax needs. An Accountant who simply completes tax returns and financial statements for their clients each year is not enough.
Why would you even bother talking about tax planning? The first answer is obvious – to save your business money. The second can be answered with a question – How many times have you received a huge shock after receiving your tax bill with no prior warning it was going to be so high? You need to know what your debts are going to be so you can come up with the money to pay them off. Tax is not something in our lives that will go away if we stick our heads in the sand.
What does tax planning involve? A proactive Accountant should have asked you for your year to date financial information already. Next, you need to estimate what is going to happen before the end of June. You may have sold some property during the year and need to provide relevant details. With this information (and previous years) available, an Accountant who is experienced with small business clients can calculate an estimate of tax payable for the
year, so at least you now know what the worst-case scenario is. The most important advice you should receive is what you can do before the end of June to reduce your tax liability. An accountant who specialises in small business can recommend various strategies to minimise tax. They may recommend using superannuation or prepaying some expenditure. Your business may need to be restructured. Do you operate with a partnership, company or a trust? If you fall into the last category, the key issue is time – you need to get things moving. The local economy has been in distress for the last few years; therefore the need to save dollars by effectively reducing the tax small businesses pay, becomes more and more important. To do this you need a proactive Accountant who is experienced in small business matters to assist you. Don’t wait until End of Financial Year to tackle your taxes. Plan your tax time now and save yourself time and money!

Can I sell stuff on Facebook? Get internet savvy
eBay is one of the hottest selling platforms in cyberspace. There’s a buyer for just about anything you want to sell and, because people have the opportunity to bid on your items, you may get more than you were expecting. The only downside is that you pay fees as a seller to use the service, and you have to wait a length of time before the auction comes to an end, so it’s not a quick fix. Trademe is another site similar to eBay, which was invented in New Zealand with a wide Kiwi audience. Australian sellers are welcome to sell their goods on the site, just remember to take into consideration additional postage fees.
Facebook is such a popular social media platform that all manner of businesses are using it for promotion, so there is definitely the potential for selling goods. You will find nation-wide interest groups set up for almost every topic, such as nation-wide clothing sites for various size clothing, and local community buy, sell and swap pages. Become part of these pages and get to understand the group’s buying and selling rules, then give it a go yourself! The benefit to using Facebook is that often sales are generated quickly, so there is the potential to make a same-day sale. You do need to take caution, however, as there is a higher potential of being ripped off, due to no security measures to confirm the identity of members.
Gumtree is an Australian based website where it is totally free to list and sell items. You pay no listing or success fees, making it a popular choice. If you have a smart phone, downloading apps for online selling platforms, such as eBay and Gumtree, can speed up the process and make it less time-consuming to get your listing live.
Getting the best bang for your buck •
Take clear photos of what you are selling. Ensure they are in focus and well lit. A buyer isn’t likely to purchase something they can’t see properly.
•
Take multiple photos of what you are selling to give the buyer a view from all sides. If an item is a label or has a unique feature, be sure to take a close-up of that so they can see the item is genuine.
•
Be thorough with the description, and focus on the positives. If there is a fault with the item, such as a scratch, you must be honest, otherwise you will receive bad feedback and people will be less likely to buy your items in the future.
Once you become a confident seller there is the potential to establish a business from the art of selling junk online. Forbes Magazine reported, “Sophia Amoruso, the founder of online clothing store Nasty Gal, started her business by selling vintage finds on eBay. After building a fanbase she outgrew the platform and created her own website. Nasty Gal is now worth $130 million, and is set to do $128 million in sales this year.” Today’s junk, is potentially worth tomorrow’s millions.

With only 16 lots remaining, it will be very important for potential buyers to have their names registered with Port of Airlie prior to the main release, which will be announced soon.
“
BUYERS SNAP UP new waterfront subdivision Port of Airlie’s absolute waterfront subdivision, The Cove, has proved to be very hot property with seven lots snapped up in a recent pre-release. Port of Airlie Sales Manager, Andrew Forster, said the rarity of these lots, within an exclusive, secure, gated community and alongside a marina, should not be underestimated. “It is estimated that there is approximately 120 lots with direct water frontage available on the North Queensland coastline between Mackay and Port Douglas,” Mr Forster explained. “The Cove will be the only location offering 94-year leases on marina berths right on land owners’ doorsteps.” “While people recognise the Whitsundays as an aquatic paradise, the simple fact is there is a scarcity of waterfront property in the area. It’s a fact that people don’t believe or understand when flying into the area across such a vast and exquisite coastline,” Mr Forster said. “The Cove’s 23 lots provide rare opportunities to buy this type of land, 30 www.corelife.com.au
which has not already been built on or developed, and is right on the doorstep of a state-of-the-art transit hub and secure marina for owners’ boats. For this reason, The Cove represents a fantastic opportunity in terms of both growth and lifestyle in a market where vacant waterfront land opportunities are few and far between. “With only 16 lots remaining, it will be very important for potential buyers to have their names registered with Port of Airlie prior to the main release, which will be announced soon.” Airlie Beach-based civil engineering contractors Allciv are undertaking the construction of The Cove, which is due for completion in coming weeks. Allciv Director, Brett Thiele, said he was excited to be working on such an exclusive and unrivalled local project. “We are extremely proud to be part of the Port of Airlie team and to have the opportunity to assist in shaping this premier waterfront marina development,” he said.

In an ideal world you’d sell your current property at exactly the same time as buying your next one however, unfortunately, it rarely happens like that. Extenuating circumstances may force you to buy before you sell or vice versa. You may find your dream home prior to selling, or even prior to contemplating selling your home. As as result, you may find yourself purchasing before you sell as a way to ensure you don’t miss out on that special property.

And while buying before you sell certainly has its upsides, for example, you will only have to move once and you will effectively avoid having to rent somewhere else in between selling and buying, there are some things you need to consider before pushing ahead with this line of attack.
Reducing the price tag
If you do end up buying before you sell, you may find there is pressure to sell you existing property quickly. This may result in a lower than anticipated price being accepted and could potentially leave you vulnerable to unexpected fluctuations in the property market. Furthermore, if the property market is quite sluggish when you are trying to sell, you may find the whole process takes more time than you had originally estimated.

this spring? PLAN NOW if you want to sell your property this spring.
Presentation of your property needs to be the first thing on your to do checklist! Yes, I did say checklist as there are a number of tasks that need to be done! It’s at this point you need to put your personal desire of wanting the highest sale price on pause, then take a walk around your home with a buyer’s hat on. Ask yourself if everything you see is acceptable. If it was another seller’s home and YOU wanted to buy it. Be honest and ask yourself, in the current market what would you be prepared to pay if you were buying this property? I suggest you browse the internet and view similar properties and sale prices in your area. Compare what they have to offer and how well they’re presented. Compare them to yours! This exercise is good to do before you call in a real estate agent for an appraisal, as you will have better insight to the information presented to you in the CMA report(Comparative Market Analysis) the agent brings. Look around your home. See what jobs might need doing to improve the appearance and presentation of your home. Buyers generally say if they are going to pay top dollar, they don’t want to move in and spend more money on touch ups or cleaning. Proper presentation will make your home look more

appealing, attracting more buyers to your open home inspections. On the internet it will instantly stand out from other properties not so well presented but offering same features and eliminates excuses for buyers to ask you to reduce your price. It’s proven that well presented properties often sell quicker, attract more buyers and in turn achieve a better sale price. In some cases they can attract multiple offers getting the seller a higher price than they originally asked for. Presentation is a priority and critical to the process of selling a property. Investing some time and money can mean a quicker sale and a higher sale price. Look at it as an investment. In saying this it needs to be done correctly to reap the rewards. KEEPING IT LOCAL
Moranbah Discount Tyres & Mechanical
Successfully riding the rise and fall of a turbulent mineral industry can be difficult at best, but thanks to the grit and determination of Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, quality vehicle servicing can be found right where it’s needed most, in the heart of our coal mining community. Since opening for business in 2005, owners Carolyn and Jamie Fritz have placed a strong emphasis on servicing the needs of the community, ensuring that locals and the mining industry wouldn’t have to travel far to get quality care for their vehicles. The couple have lived in Moranbah for 30 years and have seen the rise and fall of the local economy, which is so dependent on the mining industry. They understand how to ride out the tough times and then prepare for the turbulent boom. They raised their five children in Moranbah and have been active members of the community. They have listened to what the community want and have adapted over the years to provide much needed services. “Moranbah is a close-knit town, so when a family or business is hurting, we all feel their pain. The community spirit here is humbling to see. When someone needs help, we rally together to offer support. “We’re proud of Moranbah and proud to be local. We keep more than 40 local community members employed and give back to the community where we can. “Not only do we provide a valuable service to our locals, but we engage with and support other local businesses too. We support Moranbah State High School, in assisting with the skills shortages and rising unemployment levels, by employing school-based trainees and apprentices in administration, tyre fitting, auto-electrical and mechanical. “We believe in giving back to a community who wholeheartedly support us and donated in excess of $42,000 last year to a selection of local charities, sporting events and local clubs. Our car show last July was a huge success, raising $20,000 with support of the BMA match giving 36 www.corelife.com.au
program, for CQ Rescue, an important asset for our community,” Carolyn said. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical are passionate about their local community and are intent on keeping the wheels of progress rolling well into the future.
On-road or off the beaten track
Mining communities are used to traveling long distances to purchase what they need, but Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical have turned the tide, and now it’s the city who has to come to the desert to get the best of the best. In an exciting new development, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical are now official merchants for the rough and rugged Ironman 4x4 products. What makes this development all the more impressive are that they are the ONLY merchants within the Central Highlands and Bowen Basin. You won’t find these products anywhere else within the region, other than in Moranbah. Ironman 4x4 products have been designed and developed in Australia to cope with a harsh terrain, as well as the bombardment of accessories that a modern 4x4 has on board. Whether you use your 4x4 as a family vehicle or as an off road explorer, Ironman 4x4 has the suspension parts that will deliver the comfort and safety you demand. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical are now an official warehouse for Ironman 4x4 and carry a large range of stock, from camping accessories, clothing, rooftop tents, even a bush toilet, through to heavyduty equipment such as generators, winches, bull bars and compressors. Anything that you would want to take into the great outdoors, Ironman 4x4

Two locations, same great service.
After spending 15 years within the mining industry, part of that time as a light vehicle coordinator, Carolyn saw the need for a quality mechanical service centre in Moranbah. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical was born, but the business has never rested on its laurels. Adapting, changing and providing a top service has always been Carolyn’s focus, to ensure the needs of the changing Moranbah community were being met. To do this, the business has expanded to include Mechanical, Auto Electrical, Tyres, Underground Earthmoving Tyres and Chemicals. Staff numbers have increased from 9 to more than 40, and the number of hoists in the workshop has gone from 4 to 18.
This growth was going to need more room. In 2012, Carolyn’s husband, Jamie, left his mining position with BMA to assist Carolyn with the expansion of their business. He manages the tyre department, located at their new premises on Mills Ave, while Carolyn manages the mechanical and service division on Bacon Street.

Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical are automotive professionals; who offer all the knowledge, experience and personal attention you expect from a trusted local service centre. Not only are they convenient and affordable, they are one of the friendliest teams in town. “Our business wouldn’t be where it is today without the support of our fantastic team. Surrounding ourselves with the right staff has been fundamental to providing great service.
“Because our team all live locally, they socialise after work, and have become a close-knit family. They are loyal to the business and supportive of one another, and it has created a welcoming environment that our clients appreciate. “We support a lot of charity events, so as a team we spend a lot of time together outside of work and even on a more personal level, we gather for an Australian Day BBQ, or some drinks after a long week. My staff are great to me, so I reward them as much as I can,” Carolyn said.

By expanding the range of services offered, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical have created a one-stop shop when it comes to the mechanical, auto electrical and tyre requirements of light vehicles. With a focus on attaining a same-day turnaround to the mining industry, contractors and local customer vehicles, an efficient service as well as a quality experience is provided.

Women
who mean business
Accounting, real estate, creative marketing, restaurants, retail and even parliament. Throughout the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions, women are impacting our lives through community involvement and career.
Women are at the forefront of city planning, tourism objectives, construction projects and training our next generation. They juggle their workplace responsibilities along with their commitments to family and the greater community, in the hope of creating a brighter future. In this edition of Core Life, we highlight the attributes, challenges and personalities of a range of women influencing our district. We offer you the chance to look behind the scenes, past the woman who is handing you a bunch of flowers or approving your bank loan, to see that there is so much more to a woman in business than what shows on the surface. These women have had their ups and downs, their struggles and triumphs. They have been hired, fired, managed and directed, but have still held their heads high to move forward. They have learned that balance isn’t just for yoga, it is crucial in preservation, as without health and wellbeing, there is no being here tomorrow for those we have worked so hard for in the first place. While these women have all followed different career paths, they do share common values, being the willingness to work hard, the sacrifices made to balance work life and family, and the dedication to their careers. Intrigued by how they progressed to where they are today? Strike up a conversation with them as you see them in their businesses. Discover what it has taken for them to become a success. They aren’t the only women in Central Queensland to have an impact on their communities, in fact, this is only a small representation of the women who are striving to build better futures for themselves and their families. There are countless other women amongst our community, donating their time and talent, working to build a better place to live in tomorrow. It is to all of the hardworking women in our community to whom we dedicate this issue and these stories of success.

Wendy Whibley
“If you want it bad enough, then make it a priority.” As a fitness instructor, Wendy Whibley is used to helping others succeed, but setting her own personal goals has been fundamental to success. With a desire to become a personal trainer, Wendy studied exercise science while at university. However, 20 years ago it didn’t have the same promising career path as other professions, so she also studied nursing, before moving to London to work at the famous St Bart’s Hospital. When she returned to Australia, she settled in Brisbane and worked as a nurse, before her spark for sport and fitness reignited the personal training flame. She enrolled at The Australian Institute of Fitness where she met her husband, Corey. After moving to Cannonvale to be closer to her parents, Wendy and her husband began the region’s first personal training studio, which has since evolved into the region’s premier fitness centre. The couple are opening a second gym, along with a supplement and health food store, next month to complement their passion for nutrition. Nutrition is a big part of what keeps Wendy fuelled during a long and active day. “The last few years I have really been focused on my nutrition and eating a balance that suits my lifestyle and goals. Simply you must fuel your body like a car. If you don’t put enough of the right things in, you will feel sluggish and not function properly. Finding a good balance of protein, good carbs, good fats, vitamins and minerals is important,” Wendy said.
Wendy has three daughters, aged seven, five and three, all with their own personalities. Being a mum has been one of Wendy’s toughest jobs, which has given her more respect for her own parents who also raised three children. “My dad is a cane farmer, who worked incredibly hard, and my mum worked as well as raising three children. Now I understand how hard she worked. She is my inspiration, a remarkable woman who always puts everyone else first. Those days where you wake at 4:30am and still have work to do after 10:00pm are tough, but you have to keep going until everything is done. Every day I learn a little more, on how I can plan my day better, to be a better mum,” Wendy said. Wendy was born with a club foot, which took many operations to straighten. She spent years in and out of a full cast, which she believes may have contributed to her love of fitness. It took her a few years to get underway, but when she did, she was all the more enthusiastic about it. It has prevented her from developing muscle in her right calf, and, while it may have slowed her down on occasion, it never held her back. She is currently studying for her Diploma of Fitness to keep up with industry advancement, while training to compete in her first fitness figure competition next year. “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t. Set goals, make them big and never give up,” Wendy said.

It’s not until life is taken quite suddenly, that you realise how important it is to live in the moment. After her healthy father passed away suddenly at the age of 52, Belinda Beale has more determination than ever to appreciate every opportunity that life gives to her. Her father had given so much of his life to others. He worked hard and was loved by many, but never had the opportunity to travel, hold his grandchildren or really fulfil his dreams. As a mother of three children, Belinda takes every opportunity to travel with her family, take on bold new challenges and lives life as a doer, not a procrastinator. Making the most of the beauty of the Whitsundays, Belinda and her family take every chance they get to drop anchor in a remote bay, snorkel, take a bush walk and relax on the beach. “There’s nothing more precious than watching the sunset, glass of wine in hand, with not a soul around but my family,” Belinda commented. In 2006, Belinda’s husband Mark was headhunted by Ray White Corporate, with the proposal to purchase the Whitsunday franchise. The couple have grown the business from six staff to 35 within the past eight years. Belinda’s inspiration stemmed from her parents, who held multiple jobs as she was growing up, to give her and her siblings the best opportunities in life. “They taught me that you need to work hard to get where you want to in life and you need to make your own luck. Don’t wait for an opportunity to find you. Get up, make a plan and do it. “I believe a key to personal and professional sanity is working hard to build a great team around you and not being afraid to take a step back sometimes and let it flow. You might just realise the world’s not going to crumble around you if you stop to take a breath,” Belinda said.

Elders Insurance, mackay
The thought of clinging to a rock, high up on a cliff on a cold night, with nothing but moonlight illuminating your next move may sound terrifying to most but, to Michelle Cross, its pure bliss. Michelle had thoughts about pursuing her passion for climbing and abseiling by becoming an instructor. However, with a ‘maths brain’, which would suit accounting, and a desire to meet people outside of the office, insurance became a perfect fit. Michelle and her husband, Steve, own the Elders Insurance franchise in Mackay. In 2012 their franchise was named runner up in the Agency of the Year awards, but Michelle’s competitive spirit pushed harder to succeed. In 2013, their franchise was awarded Agency of the Year throughout Australia. Michelle’s determination and competitiveness is a natural part of who she is. On a camping trip to Cape York, she slipped while walking downhill and painfully dislocated a knee. Knowing that a doctor was hours away, she grabbed the dislocated joint and popped it back into the socket herself. She asked her husband for his shirt so she could wrap her knee, to support it as they made their way to the hospital. He told her that it was the bravest thing he had ever seen. One day Michelle can find herself in an engineering workshop, the next on a cattle farm. It’s about getting to know her client’s business, discovering their passions, and doing the job well to ensure their livelihood is protected. The Mackay region offers a great diversity that Michelle loves to be a part of. A piece of advice that Michelle has applied in her career is “opportunity is missed by most, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” “I love being in business and I love the juggling act of making it all work. As I get older, I have learnt that it is impossible to keep all the balls in the air at the same time, and that it is okay,” Michelle said.

As she sat in the doctor’s office, they weren’t the words she wanted to hear.
endless travel and tremendous sacrifice, but Peggy was living her dream.
“I’m sorry Mrs Goodall, but it appears you won’t be able to have children.”
Arthur and Peggy would constantly fly between China and Thailand to see each other, making the long-distance relationship work. Peggy had dedicated her 20’s to her career and had told Arthur, “Don’t even think about asking me to marry you until after I’m 30.” Two days after her 30th birthday, Arthur proposed.
Peggy shook her head. Like a lot of women who receive this heart-breaking information, she felt immediate sadness but there was a stubborn disbelief which followed, that was naturally a part of who she was. “That can’t be right, it’s in the plan,” she thought. Peggy had written her life plan while she was still in High School. Even today, she still has that very diary from school, with a timeline of who she wanted to be at every step of her life. Up until this point in time, the timeline hadn’t been broken. Peggy had lived her life exactly how she had dreamed, right up until this moment with the doctor. Peggy had been determined to be a successful careerwoman. After finishing High School, she was lined up to study child psychology and had a part-time job at Hungry Jacks. During a shift at work, in sauntered a lady who had pulled up in a bright red convertible. She had big red hair, oversized sunglasses and a designer handbag. As soon as Peggy saw this lady entering her work she thought “I want to be you.” As fate would have it, this charismatic lady’s order was delayed, so Peggy took the initiative to chat to her while she waited for her order. Two days later, that same lady came back to Hungry Jacks to find Peggy and offered her a position on the spot. She exuded such charisma and enthusiasm. Peggy knew this was an opportunity not to be missed. Without really understanding why, both women knew the other would be important to them in their lives. This was the start of her drive to succeed. “Having a mentor is one of the most important parts to growing in business. I can think of five key mentors I have had throughout my career. They push you to achieve more than you thought possible and show you the path to success,” Peggy said. With a passion for finance and the automotive industry, Peggy held administration and financial positions with car dealerships in Brisbane and then took a position with Reynolds & Reynolds (Pentana), a leader in the automotive industry for implementing online dealership systems. After helping to implement a business management solutions in New Zealand & Papua New Guinea, then moving onto Sydney and then home to Brisbane, Peggy was offered the opportunity of a lifetime. “We would like you to head up a new business for us in China,” Peggy was told. This was a major crossroad in her life as she would be also separated from Arthur, now her husband, but he encouraged her to take the position and promised that they would manage. Arthur then moved to Thailand to manage a car dealership, so they could be closer together. Days later, she had her passport, her bags were packed and she said goodbye to her friends & family. She didn’t speak Chinese and had no idea what was ahead of her but, being surrounded by the right people, she knew she would make this a success. Peggy cried almost all the way to China. As soon as the plane touched down, the eyes were dried and it was on with business. She checked into her hotel and frantically googled information on how to set up a business in China. Begging a manager of the hotel Starbucks to use a corner of the café as her office conduct interviews for hiring staff. It was an amazing experience and after managing this project she moved to Thailand to be with Arthur and to manage Asia Pacific for Reynolds & Reynolds, successfully managing the IT Company in three countries China, Thailand and the Philippines. She was a key contributor to the signing of an AUD 13.2 million dollar deal, the largest in the company’s 30 year history. The position had come with 90 hour weeks, 44 www.corelife.com.au
It was time to settle down, and flying across Asia was no way to start a family, so the couple moved back to Brisbane. Moving home and moving on, Peggy started a small Automotive consulting company called Automotive Management Solutions, assisting dealers in accounting and dealership training and helping them increase their bottom lines. Consulting and training is an area Peggy is very passionate about and dealerships across the country have called upon Peggy for her passion and expertise for more than 15 years. This is where Peggy’s timeline had hit its first snag. The 30’s was supposed to be the decade where she started her family. The couple had discussed their options, but before they had even scheduled their first appointment to see a specialist, a miracle happened. Peggy was pregnant. To this day, the doctors are still unsure of how exactly it happened, although Arthur puts it down to his ‘sensational lads’. Deciding that she wasn’t quite busy enough as a new mum, Peggy started a business that she could run from home, Cookies and Cream, an online baby and children’s boutique, while still operating Automotive Management Solutions. The couple moved to Emerald for 12 months while Arthur was managed a car dealership. They moved back to Oyster Cove on the Gold Coast. Two sons later, Arthur and Peggy where given another amazing opportunity to move to beautiful Mackay, to own and manage Mackay’s River City Motor Group, and then Powerhouse Ford (now known as Goodall’s Motor Group). They have amalgamated the two businesses and manage 95 staff over 10 brands. Arthur is the dealer principal and Peggy is the financial controller, utilising her 20 years of automotive industry experience. Their sons, who are now aged seven and four, are a big part of the business, Peggy believes that their involvement is important to helping them understand why mum and dad both have to work. “I talk to them about things they can understand, like how many cars we sold that day, or who mummy had a meeting with. I tell them about my day, and that encourages them to tell me about their day. We call it highs and lows. What were their highs in the day and what were the lows. It helps me to understand the day they have had. From the time I pick them up until bed time, that’s their time. Unless the dealership is burning to the ground, I don’t want to know about it,” Peggy said. “The kids are my number one priority, but they understand that sometimes work will come first. I am very blessed to have such an amazing, supportive husband. He keeps me grounded and makes me laugh and without the support of the beautiful people in my life here, and the kids school WAS, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do each day. If my kids are happy, then I’m happy at work. It is a huge balancing act and it’s certainly not easy, but it is definitely worth it.”

While it was the turquoise appeal of the water and the Whitsunday islands that first grabbed her attention, the hinterland surrounding Airlie Beach is now where Tolita Dukes discovers her paradise. Riding on horseback, finding a creek and jumping into the cooling waters, nothing else compares to the beautiful Whitsundays she loves to call home. From a young age, Tolita was drawn to the beauty of the Whitsundays. After majoring in tourism at university, the appeal of having the Great Barrier Reef tempted her into moving, and she has lived in the Whitsundays ever since. Tolita immersed herself into the tourism lifestyle, working on the islands, which gave her the opportunity to discover the beauty of the ocean through diving and snorkeling and has since enjoyed many underwater adventures. As she learned more about the local tourism industry, Tolita progressed into marketing, and further developed her skills by completing a Masters in Business Administration. Post graduation, Tolita accepted a position within the mining industry for 12 months. She discovered that the same issues plagued people within the mining industry as she had witnessed within tourism, marketing was almost taboo, or simply put in the ‘too hard’ basket. “Due to being time-poor or not fully understanding the benefits, I noticed that people tended to sweep marketing under the rug. They didn’t know where to start, or where their money was best spent to produce results, so it was easier to do nothing at all.’ Tolita recognised an opportunity to offer guidance and marketing advice to businesses who didn’t have the time or expertise to get their brand noticed. She was passionate about helping businesses grow, and her concept for 8 Seconds evolved. “I have always been determined to succeed, however it took an Anthony Robbins seminar where I walked across hot coals, to open my mind to what I was truly capable of. You can do anything you put your mind to, both personally and professionally,” Tolita said. “Everyone has moments of self-doubt, to a degree it keeps us honest. Don’t let that run your life, or cap your dreams! You are the only person standing in your way, if you want something, go get it.”

Louisa May Alcott said it best, with “Good, old-fashioned ways keep hearts sweet, heads sane, hands busy.” This old-fashioned notion resonates with Pauline Townsend, who believes that the key to a successful business, is attentive service, valuing clients, and being good at what you do. “Good old-fashioned service has never gone out of vogue. As a business owner, you need to be on top of advances in technology and changes to industry, but the notion of great service will never get old,” Pauline said. Pauline is the founder and CEO of Simply Sorted, an associate based organisation providing consultancy services to businesses across all industries, from Industrial Relations, Human Resources and Occupational Health and Safety, to Training, Recruitment and Events Management. She was also the co-founder of the Inspirational Business Women’s Network, which provided networking opportunities for Mackay businesswomen to network and build relationships. “I have a group of very talented individuals who are experts in their respective fields. I’m acutely aware that when I refer them to assist a business, that they are representing my business, so I ensure that they are the best at what they do,” Pauline said. As a Mackay local, Pauline saw the potential for a consultancy service, which placed an emphasis on people first, to offer a personal touch. “As a former employee of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I was passionate about helping local businesses succeed. Often I was in contact with a business people who were excellent at what they did, but when it came to internal areas of the business, such as human resources or industrial relations, I saw them struggle.

“We can’t all be experts at everything, so I offer a specialist and personal service, which can expertly advise on a chosen area, to ensure a business is functioning as it should, right from its core. “A former mentor of mine once shared this advice; ‘Make friends with your clients and then service the pants off them’. “I have always carried this mantra with me, as I value each of my clients on a personal level, and do everything I can to ensure they receive the best service available,” Pauline said.
Jodi Shambrook had every intention of becoming an accountant, until an around-the-world trip with her mother when she was 16 changed her entire perspective on life.
“The combined prestige of the Peppers brand and beautiful Whitsundays location lured me into taking my next step to take on a property with food and beverage, and conferencing facilities managed internally,” Jodi said.
She fell in love with the travel industry, and knew she had to be a part of it.
Jodi’s career has shown that with hard work and a passion for what you do, you can achieve grand results within a short space of time. She was a general manager for Breakfree Resorts in New Zealand at the age of 21 and then stepped up to become a successful regional manager of the Queenstown district, overseeing six resorts. A significant achievement at such a young age.
After leaving school, Jodi completed diplomas in tourism and events management, before embarking on work experience around Australia and New Zealand. She enjoyed a variety of positions and locations within the Mantra Group of properties, beginning in reception and front office management, before progressing to general management and regional management positions. In May 2009, Jodi moved from the Gold Coast to the Whitsundays to join the opening team of Peppers Airlie Beach Resort, which commenced operations in June 2009.
When she’s not at work, Jodi enjoys spending time with family and friends, enjoying what the beautiful Whitsundays has to offer. Peppers Airlie Beach will be celebrating its 5th Birthday in June 2014, so there will be a month full of exciting specials for anyone wanting to come celebrate with the Peppers Airlie Beach team. A night of bliss in amazing Airlie may ignite your own passion to pursue a career amongst the wonder of the Whitsundays.

The heart wants what the heart wants and, often, our heart can guide us in many places the mind never thought possible. With a love story that could rival that of Romeo and Juliet, Sarah-Lee Adams met her true love in grade nine, but it took more than 20 years for life to decide that now was the time for this great love to shine. Sarah grew up in Townsville, married and had two sons, who are now 16 and 14. After 14 years she separated from her husband. Sarah took her sons on a mini-break to Airlie Beach. Immediately she fell in love with the beauty. Aboard the catamaran, Camira, Sarah was approached by a friendly man as they sailed around the Whitsunday Islands. As a beauty therapist, Sarah was used to being chatty and, having been separated for 20 months, she didn’t immediately realise that this man had a genuine interest in getting to know her. After politely chatting, they realise that they are both originally from Townsville. Sarah had a feeling this man was similar in age to her, and then found out that they went to the same school. After looking closely, Sarah started putting two and two together. “Scott Martin, we went out in grade nine!” Scott looked at Sarah, and commented “Sarah-Lee!” Sarah craved a sea change and moved to the Whitsundays. She fell in love with the ‘blue’ and decided this was the perfect place for rejuvenation of her life. Over time, her friendship with Scott blossomed and she fell head over heels for the man she first dated 25 years ago. With more than 10 years working in the medical aesthetic industry, Sarah wanted to bring her style of scientific skincare to the Whitsunday community. She had worked for one of Australia’s leading plastic surgeons, practicing both beauty and dermal therapy, and had noticed a gap within the local beauty therapy community that her scientific approach could fill. By chance, she needed a new hairdresser and met Jack from Adam and Eve, who had a beauty room for lease. With support from Scott, her sons and her father, Sarah took the plunge to open Sensorium Skin Technology. Sarah’s professional philosophy is also a lifestyle. She practices what she preaches, with a holistic approach to long-term beauty. To maintain the strength and posture a beauty therapist needs, she relies on yoga, strength training and walking to keep in shape. She keeps stress at arm’s length using breathing techniques to reduce the bad effects that stress are known to cause on the face and within the body. In the sun, she wears head to toe lycra, to prevent the damaging rays from ageing the skin. A must when she escapes to a hidden beach on a jetski with a picnic lunch. “I adore my work. I feel utterly fulfilled and have discovered my life balance. I approach the world with love and acceptance. Trying to remain grounded. I always strive to reach high. “A beautiful businesswoman once told me, that the world can be what you want it to be. With self-belief and a positive attitude, it really can,” Sarah said. 48 www.corelife.com.au

You may not know it by looking at her, but Mel Fowler is a professional juggler. She’s also an expert at jumping through hoops and can balance with the best of them. While running away with the circus may be tempting some days, Mel’s attributes are less about clown and acrobat tricks and more to do with how she manages to run both a successful business, Stellarossa, and spend time with her family. With four sons, it does take a touch of magic. Mel was born and bred in Mackay, growing up at Kinchant Dam. Her rural upbringing meant she spent her days in the sun, swimming and riding motorbikes. She believes it was the best way to grow up. She was taught from a young age that if she wanted something, she would have to work hard to get it. It’s a philosophy she tries to instil into her own children. Her oldest son, Beau, regularly spends time at Stellarossa with Mel, learning how the business runs and getting an appreciation for what mum does. She began her career in hospitality, as a teenager and had a flair for the industry. She moved into a management position and continued her career in Brisbane. When she had children, Mel spent seven years selling Tupperware. She made a promise to herself that the only way she would re-enter the hospitality industry was if she owned the business. “I needed something that I could work around the family, making both time for business and time for my children,” Mel said. When the opportunity presented itself to own a Stellarossa franchise, Mel knew it was where she needed to be. She thought it would take some time to work up to her dream business, but Stellarossa has become everything she had ever hoped for. It’s the kind of place she had imagined finishing her career. Having always wanted six children, the business has taken place of the other two, but both areas of her life keep her equally busy. Her sons Beau, Joe, Jesse and Levi are aged thirteen, seven, five and four, respectively. Mel has learnt techniques for giving both the attention they need. “Building a great team and surrounding yourself with good people is key. I need to be able to trust that the business is being looked after when I’m not there. Also I put in a lot of work myself, to show the team that I don’t expect anything of them that I wouldn’t do myself.

“I offer apprenticeships and Cert 3 in hospitality so my worthy staff can earn certifications while they work with us. Recognising their experience and setting them up for the future. “Schedules and organisation is important. Each day I know exactly what I need to get done and who I’m going to see. “The first year of business was hard, and it was hard on the kids. Learning to balance work and family is key to making it all work. “Life is full of risk, but without risk there’s no gain. Keep positive. There’s only so far you can fall,” Mel said.
Selina
Red E Personal Training Feel the fear and do it anyway. Business, like any commitment, requires determination, dedication and good advice to shape it toward success. In many ways it’s similar to a fitness goal. Results are a direct reflection of the amount of hard work put in. Selina Wright is a business-owner you will not often find sitting down. She’s peppy, energetic and always looking ahead toward a new goal. She’s fanatical about fitness, and that’s what her clients love about her. Born and bred in Mackay, Selina always enjoyed an active lifestyle, but waited until 2003 before turning the passion into a career. She has played netball since the age of eight, which led to her playing in the premier league before she retired to concentrate on running. She was a member of the Mackay Road Runners club and pushed herself to compete in eight half-marathons. She spent a year living in Vancouver, Canada, and will always have a fondness for the beautiful city. When she returned to Australia, she launched straight back into study on the Gold Coast, completing her Cert IV in Fitness to pursue the dream of becoming a personal trainer. In January 2004, Selina moved back home to Mackay. She was employed by the owners of Red E Personal Training as Head Trainer, since the business opened its doors on day one. Later that year in October, Selina had the opportunity to purchase the business, and had to quickly understand the fundamentals of owning the venture. “The initial year was tough. It took me a while to find my feet. I learned a lot of lessons the hard way, but I’m not one to give up. I’m a bit stubborn, like my dad, and because I had a goal in mind, I put every ounce of strength I had into achieving that goal. Whatever it took,” Selina said.
As a shining example for her members, Selina continues to push herself physically to stay in great shape and was featured in Oxygen Magazine, a national fitness magazine for women in 2009. She keeps in mind that pain is only temporary, and most enjoys seeing her clients achieve results beyond their dreams, from running 5km to climbing mountains. “You can make excuses or you can get results, you can’t do both.” “Health and fitness is my life. I love how it makes me feel and I love that my career enables me to share my passion with others, to make them feel great too. “It’s about women empowering other women. Together, we can all achieve far more than we thought we ever could.” 50 www.corelife.com.au

In 10 years, Selina has grown the business from having one trainer, to a professional team of 11 employees, has moved the business into larger premises to accommodate a growing client base and also runs boot-camps for women and corporate groups. It wasn’t without a lot of hard work and chronic fatigue. Selina followed her own advice and reached out for a coach to help her with the business aspects and applied the knowledge she was given to make her dream a success. This resulted in her business winning a National Award, in 2011, as recognition of her achievement as a business owner.

In a challenging industry where innovation is key, Clace Brady recognises customer service is pivotal to the success of her business. “Building a new home or an investment property is one of, if not the biggest, purchase people will make in their life. It is our aim to recognise this and ensure that each and every client feels their needs are being recognised, if not exceeded, as the project evolves. Her father was a great point of inspiration as she grew up, and that put her on the path to owning her own business. “My parents own MOE Office Supplies in Mackay and, from a young age during school holidays, I would work in the store. I started from the bottom, emptying bins, and worked my way up through each department of the company. “In 2000, we opened a second store in Airlie and I moved from Mackay to manage it for them. I worked for my parents for 12 years and in that time I saw how my parents respected their business, their staff and their customers. “The most poignant lesson Dad taught me was to provide excellent customer service. It is the backbone to his business and now in turn the backbone within my own business. Trends come and go, but knowledgeable and friendly customer service will always be the key to success,” Clace said. Clace had an exciting childhood, living not only in Brisbane, but also spending some time in Papua New Guinea, before moving to Mackay. It was when Clace returned to Brisbane to attend boarding school she found a new love of team sports. Clace is as competitive on the sports field as she is in business, having played almost every sport she had an opportunity too. Not one to discriminate based on gender, Clace enjoyed the controlled strength of ballet, right through to the rough and tumble of rugby union.

“Sports really do forge connections between people. They shape how we interact with each other. Individual commitment to a group effort; that is what makes a team work, and it makes our company work,” she said. In 2010, with husband Michael, Clace purchased a business of her own, Cavalier Homes Whitsundays and soon found herself needed in the administration, marketing and accounts side of the business. She resigned from her parents business to concentrate her efforts on her and Michael’s new venture. Keeping up with the times, Cavalier Homes is soon to launch new technology which will revolutionise how clients are engaged with whilst they design their home. “It will allow our clients to view the progress of the build online at any time, as it will have updated images, milestones, plans and budgets all there in one easy portal for people to view,” Clace said. Cavalier Homes Whitsundays has also recently opened up a Style Centre for clients to see and touch each feature before committing to the installation within their new home. ‘ Clace commented, “Although we are building new homes for people, it is the experience that they will remember, so it is imperative that we go above and beyond to ensure customer service remains paramount, every time.”

Melissa Green “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s.”
Bank of Queensland, mackay
Melissa said.
This quote from ‘12 Years a Slave’ actress Lupita Nyong’o can be used in many contexts and for Melissa Green, it presents an opportunity to reflect on how far women have come.
She has been working for the Bank of Queensland for 19 years, where the last 10 were spent as the Branch Manager. She has owned the branch for nearly seven years and specialises in lending as well as small and medium business banking requirements.
When she was 21, Melissa gained valuable insight into a time that was harder for her ancestors. She travelled to Malta with her grandparents to see where her family had originally come from. An experience that opened her eyes to the strength her grandmother had, to move a family of 13 across the other side of the world, for better opportunities.
“I am very passionate about my team and how to manage them effectively. I am a local committee member for the Australian Institute of Management and this organisation has an incredible programme called The Management Excellence Awards. In 2008, I won the local award for Owner Manager of the year.
Melissa was born and bred in Mackay and often jokes she will be buried here too. Growing up in Mackay she enjoyed an active lifestyle and was heavily involved in hockey. She was also part of the school choir and, even now, if you see her stopped at traffic lights, she will more than likely be singing in her car with her daughters.
“This award helped to push me along to believe in myself more. I am consistently within the top five branches in Australia, giving our customers assurance that they are being looked after by the best.
As a child, she would visit the bank with her mum and she found it fascinating. In Year 10 she spent some time on work experience at a local bank and felt that her vocation was set. After completing Year 12, she started with the Bank of Queensland as a cheque delivery girl. “These were in the day before internet banking and I used to walk around to all of the banks and deliver wages for the employees of my clients,” 52 www.corelife.com.au
Melissa is the treasurer and charter member of Blue River Mackay Lions Group and, with her husband Jason, are also parents of two daughters, aged nearly nine and seven. Melissa commented, “I hope that more working mums understand that you can’t do it alone, and it does take a village to raise a child. The more people that my children have in their life that love them, the better. “I love the fact that my girls are able to witness me living my dreams.”

Attitude is everything, especially when you run a business in a predominantly man’s world. “If I’m unsure about something, I never pretend to know. If I say something, it’s because I’m confident in what I’m saying.” Carolyn Fritz, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical’s director knows what she’s talking about. She spent 15 years working as a Senior Administrative Assistant / Light Vehicle Coordinator of more than 100 vehicles, at the Goonyella Riverside Mine. It was this knowledge and experience that led to her opening Moranbah’s premier mechanical service centre. “I live and breathe my business, and know every detail inside and out. I need that level of knowledge for my customers to have confidence in the service we are providing,” Carolyn said. Carolyn and her husband Jamie have lived in Moranbah for more than 30 years, and raised their five children in the mining town. They enjoy life amongst the close-knit community and have witnessed the highs and lows in the town due to the rise and fall of the mining industry.
Carolyn’s dedication to her business and the local community hasn’t gone un-noticed. The business has been repeatedly nominated in the Excellence in Service Business Awards and has won multiple categories. The business was also nominated for the Telstra Regional Business Awards and Carolyn was nominated for Telstra Business Woman of the Year.

Out of all the awards the business has won, the one which Carolyn is most proud of is one awarded to herself and Jamie from their staff, the Best Employers of the Year award. Carolyn’s distinctive ideas and talents have set her business apart from the competition. She is a leader, not a follower, and has set her business up for long-term success, despite a challenging economic environment, while also making time to be a mother and wife. “If I didn’t have my family’s support at home, my success wouldn’t be where it is today. “My husband and my children are my backbone. Whenever I need encouragement my boys are right behind me. “My children’s success in their own endeavors has confirmed for me that women can have a career, as well as be a mother and a wife. It proves that I have done both and the evidence is in my businesses success and my children’s ability to also be leaders and not followers,” Carolyn said.

a blessed life
There’s something about the feeling of having red-carpet ready hair. The way it catches the light, bounces as we turn our head and how amazing it feels through the fingers. If we can replicate this feeling every day, even better. It all starts with finding the right salon, and a hairdresser who is truly blessed. Blessed Hair and Beauty was a long dreamed about venture for mother and daughter team, Karen O’Neill and Casey Kelland. Karen’s experience in business management and banking had set her up well for the challenges of owning your own business. Combined with 12 years within the aged-care industry, her compassion for others and genuine care for clients has transitioned well into the art of hairdressing. When the opportunity presented itself to work side-by-side with her daughter Casey, Karen jumped at the opportunity for the change in career. Mackay local, Casey Kelland, forged her hairdressing career 17 years ago under Gina Taulani, the former owner of Gina.T Hair and Beauty. With a genuine passion for results, Casey has become a multi award-winning stylist and has mastered a wide range of techniques. Always striving to keep at the forefront of the industry, she regularly attends expos and seminars to bring the best products and trends direct to her clients. “It’s all about delivering the look that our clients want and, with ever-changing trends and advancements within the industry, we need to be prepared to continually challenge ourselves to deliver fresh results,” Casey said. The mother and daughter combination creates a family-orientated atmosphere where clients are treated like family and given thorough consultations within a comfortable atmosphere.

It’s all part of the Blessed service, where time and attention are part of the package.
After gaining work experience with a local florist during High School, Carmen Maguire caught the flower bug and has carried with her a passion for petals, but it was performing that first captured her attention when she left school. With a talent for singing, dancing and theatre, Carmen moved to Rockhampton to pursue a degree in Performing Arts, with a major in vocal studies and theatre. After finishing university, she took a secondment to work as a Deputy Stage Manager for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. As part of the experience, Carmen stage-managed headline talent during the opening and closing ceremonies, which involved working with performers such as Sarah Blasko and The Bodyrockers. She met Delta Goodrem and was also part of the team responsible for managing the timetable for Queen Elizabeth II. But Carmen discovered that home is where the heart is and her love for flowers would bring her home. After gaining further qualifications as a florist, the opportunity arose to purchase the same business where Carmen had spent her time during work experience. It was an exciting prospect to be able to own the business where her love had first evolved from, in her home town of Emerald. Her parents encouraged her to follow her business passion and have been a big part of her life and inspiration toward owning her own business.

“I think no matter how busy you get in your life, you can always make time for family and friends, and the things you love. Those are what feed your soul,” Carmen said. These days you can still see her on stage in Emerald, performing vocals with the band ‘The Modifiers’, or water skiing on Lake Maraboon, where she manages her time effectively between her business and her passions outside of work. “The best piece of advice that I’ve been given is to just be true to yourself. If you love what you do and you have a positive attitude towards everything in life, you will always succeed where there is love.”

sporting a passion Skye Gregory
“The squeaky gate gets the oil.” We hate to admit it, but dads always give the best advice. Listening to her dad, and putting his advice into practice, was what changed Skye Gregory’s life. Skye and her family moved from Sydney to Mackay when she was three years old, a beach and rural lifestyle she cherishes. Her father played rugby union for Manly and was an Australian beach sprint champion. Her mother was a fantastic swimmer. It was safe to say that Skye and her brother would be enthusiastic about sport, and both developed into great runners. Sport was Skye’s passion, but it wasn’t in competing that she wanted to create a career. She wanted to work for IMG in London. So, before she flew to the UK, she sent them her CV, and then called them on the day she landed to request an interview. She was advised there were no current positions available, but Skye wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer. After a week she called them again and received the same answer. After a while, she made the decision to call them every day, which she did. Her dad had always said to her, “The squeaky gate gets the oil,” and “The best jobs are never advertised.” Her tenacity paid off and IMG gave her a job. Six years later she was the European Project Manager for some of the biggest sporting events in the world. Two of IMG’s accounts that Skye worked on were Wimbledon and the 32nd America’s Cup. When Lleyton Hewitt won Wimbledon in 2002, Skye shook his hand in congratulations soon after he stepped off the court. Each year she was with IMG she was based at Wimbledon for

two weeks, walking past legends of the sport, McEnroe, Becker, and Federer to name a few. She experienced the thrill of being on a chase boat with a film crew in Valencia for the America’s Cup and was driven around a Las Vegas speedway track for hot laps in a NASCAR. Back home in Mackay, Skye is the mother to two children, ages five and seven, and has shaped her career to fit around motherhood. She is the marketing manager for Mackay’s highest achieving V8 Supercar driver, Morgan Haber. V8 racing is an expensive sport to be in and, like any mainstream commercial sport, you need sponsors to keep the car on the track. Skye looks after Morgan’s sponsorship and marketing needs, to allow him to study and spend time on the track. Skye is also the team manager for the Mackay based Friers Offshore Racing who compete in the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships. “If I hadn’t been so determined and gone after what I wanted, I seriously doubt I would be sitting here today talking about the three great young men I work for in sport,” Skye said. Skye is passionate about women succeeding in business, especially in male-dominated professions, where balancing work with raising a family can often be harshly criticized. “Sometimes people think that because you work school hours you’re not putting in a full day’s work. What they don’t see is that some nights you finish working at 1am, and weekends you work on and off the entire time. “Being a woman in business is really a juggling act and requires plenty of organisation, determination and patience,” Skye said.

Synergy Accounting
Gillian Sandhoff is not your normal, everyday accountant. Upon first impression, you can’t help but be drawn by her exquisite sense of fashion, complemented by bold jewellery, and oh those shoes! Her love of shoes is conveyed in having more than 200 pairs as it doesn’t matter what sort of day you may be having, shoes will always look fabulous. A filing cabinet sits in her office, but not full of TFN’s or ABN’s, instead it is home for emergency shoes, in case the need for a change arises. After all, it was Marilyn Monroe who was quoted as saying “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” She may not have world domination in her sights, but Gillian has certainly made her mark on the world of accounting. It’s not only her impeccable appearance that sets her apart from your more traditional accountant, but also her passion for helping small businesses grow. She has all the skills and qualifications to ensure her clients are tax compliant, but Gillian and her team strive to deliver more. Their proactive approach allows them to think outside of the box to offer a range of business advice, assisting their clients to enjoy a lifestyle they crave while their business succeeds. “Too many businesses launch into operation without consulting an accountant first. Not having the correct amount of working capital can be a costly mistake,” Gillian said. Gillian grew up in Wales and visited Australia when she was 21. She loved the country so much that she decided to live here, settling in Brisbane. In 1993 she started her accounting career, moving to Mackay to work for her brother, Ian Carlisle. Gillian studied both IT and accounting, and later worked for an international firm, concentrating on commercial accounting, before deciding that public accounting was the field she would like to specialise in. She opened her own firm with a friend, Jodie Payne and started “Payne Sandhoff”. After a parting of ways she went into partnership with the firm she started her career with, Connole Carlisle. With the support and encouragement from her team at Connole Carlisle, Gillian opened her own company to form Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions, located at the Terminus complex in Paget. Her experienced team followed her, and have embraced the concept of helping their business clients succeed, not just ensuring their tax is calculated correctly. With a passion for international travel, and with business contacts spread throughout the world, Gillian is fond of networking and gathering advice from other successful business people. “Executive Chairman of Yellow Brick Road, Mark Bouris and I share a common belief, and that is what it takes to become successful. You must have a goal, and then a plan to reach that goal. You can’t just be a leaf blowing in the wind and hope to be blown toward success. This is an approach I take with my clients. Determine your goal, and let’s work together on a plan to achieve it. This is how you get to where you want to be,” Gillian said. Gillian also has a passion for dogs and animal welfare, pictured here with her boxers Rocky and Brandy. Brandy also shares Gillian’s passion for shoes, being directly responsible for 5 shoe funerals.

on top of the world Dee Mangion
When you love what you do, life becomes less about work and more about enjoying life. When that profession has grown from a fusion of other passions, a work / life balance becomes more achievable, because your work is what you love to do. Dee Mangion has an enthusiasm for her profession, which shines through in the desire she has to get the best result possible for her clients. She works under the collective power of Mackay Regional Real Estate, but as an independent, fully licensed agent, she has the freedom to use her creative marketing techniques to create a fully personalised selling solution for vendors. Her background in landscape planning, garden design and interior design, as well as her passion for photography gives her a keen eye when it comes to giving advice on how to sell a home, so vendors are already one step ahead due to her knowledge. Dee grew up in Victoria and has three sons, two of which live in London, and the third is in Victoria. She has one grandchild and one on the way. A very exciting time for her and her children. Dee lived rurally when she had her children and decided to study business and marketing while they were young, decided her to create an opportunity from what she loved. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit, she opened a country home and garden store in Central Victoria, to express her passion for garden design and interior decorating. She recruited a sales team and had 25 consultants nationwide to keep up with demand, when her store evolved from retail to direct selling and mail order. Craving a sea change, Dee moved to Mackay and is grateful to be part of a great sales team. With her children grown, she is able to dedicate her time fully to her real estate career, a passion she has wanted to pursue for many years. She enjoys the ever-changing vistas of the Slade Point area, where she walks Lamberts Beach in the morning to capture the spectacular sun rises. “There is a friendly energy to Slade Point that I enjoy. I deliver my letter box leaflets personally to keep in touch with the community, as I enjoy connecting with the locals, whether it’s chatting about the changes they have made to their garden, or talking about the weather,” Dee said.

Dee covers all aspects of residential living, from Mackay’s CBD to rural properties, including house and land packages. Her respect from clients has evolved from telling the whole story as it is, not sugarcoating negatives, building trust and integrity which can lack within the industry. “My vendors say they are drawn to my enthusiastic energy, positivity, and honesty. I believe in just being myself when meeting new people. I offer a network of carefully chosen associates to benefit my clients, whether it’s assistance with finance, interior design, property developing or simply needing a handyman. It’s not just about selling the home, I try to be a one stop solution. My aim is to offer the whole package, while remaining true to who I am,” Dee said. Without hard work there is no reward, so it makes sense to trust an agent whose promise is to work hard and creatively to achieve success. “If you love what you do, you don’t have to work a day in your life, and I’m fortunate to be able to do what I love,” Dee said.

Many things will shape us as we progress through life, but at the start and at the end, there is family. Kerry Foxon learned the value of family from a young age. When you’re one of 13 children, childhood memories are filled with family adventures. Her father became her hero. “He was a hard worker, honest and everything he ever did was for his family. I really admire his strength and support he always had for us,” Kerry said. Kerry sees similar qualities in her husband Kristian, who has supported and inspired her career as both a mother of four children and as a businesswoman. “He has a lot of qualities similar to my father’s and has been supportive of me from the start. Even while I was a stay at home mum when the children were little. He has played a big part in inspiring me to become who I am today. I only hope that together we can inspire my children into knowing that anything is possible. With hard work and a positive mind, you can achieve anything,” Kerry said. Kristian has been with the ANZ bank for 14 years, and when the opportunity of buying the local franchise became available, Kerry knew it was a fantastic opportunity for them both. Being a mobile lender allows Kerry to see people outside of normal banking business hours, a convenient solution to fit in with a hectic lifestyle. “It’s truly great to be able to assist people as they embark on their dream of owning their own home,” Kerry said. With a busy lifestyle, Kerry often feels that there aren’t quite enough hours in the day. However, a good coffee or the opportunity to get out the recipe book helps to refocus her day. “I always have, and still do, love cooking. I love to try new recipes and create something new. It relaxes me and keeps me happy, even if sometimes I do cook too much. You never know, maybe one day I will appear on My Kitchen Rules!” After completing Grade 12, Kerry lived in Bangkok, Thailand, for 12 months, on an AFS student exchange program. She immersed herself in the lifestyle and learned to speak the language, which taught her a lot about respecting other cultures. Passionate about networking and supporting other local businesswomen, Kerry is part of Zonta, where women in business meet monthly for lunch and listen to guest speakers. “There is a great network of talented women in Mackay and it is a privilege getting to know them all,” Kerry said.

Naomi Otto
While attending a High School careers seminar, Naomi Otto was handed a bumper sticker. It read, “Girls can do anything!” After 26 years in the building industry, both on the tools and behind a desk, she’s confident that there’s nothing that she can’t do. Naomi and her husband are the other half of the Relaxed Living Homes partnership, bringing with them Majestic Development Services, a QBCC Medium Rise Building Design company. Naomi’s father introduced her to drafting while she was in High School and after excelling in technical drawing, she completed an Associate Diploma in Engineering (Civil). “My greatest pleasure in life is being able to help someone into their own home. Never once have I woken up in the morning and not wanted to go to work,” Naomi said. The early death of her father has made his influence on her career all the more important. This moment was a turning point in Naomi’s life, which made her determined to be an achiever. “I pushed hard in my office at Connell Wagner in Melbourne for membership to National Women in Construction, (NAWIC), and I was their first trial person for work at home to help set up their protocols for future employees both male and female Australia wide,” Naomi said. It was a huge step forward in equal opportunity for working women, within the heavily male-dominated industry of engineering. A move, which no doubt, her father would have been immensely proud of.

“You may not always have fun, times will be tough. You’ll laugh, cry and argue, sometimes all at once! Always be honest, admit your mistakes, find a solution, because there always is a solution, and you will succeed.” Success breeds success, so listening to advice from businesswoman Lianne Gee, is a step in the right direction. After studying a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Marketing, Lianne became the State Marketing Manager for the CHR Group, overseeing 47 offices. As a 24 year old, and often the only woman in the board room, Lianne learned that to be the best, you had to first believe yourself that you were the best. “From a young age my aspiration has always been to be the best at whatever that may be,” said Lianne. Lianne and her husband, Ross, created their boutique Building Company, Relaxed Living Homes, in February 2006, and then in 2012 went into partnership with Majestic Development Services, enabling the business to offer custom design services also. The couple have three young children, who are the light of their life. “Our main priority is our three beautiful children. Ross and I share the load to ensure they do not miss out on anything as we both work full time. It’s hard to juggle children with a business, but we try our best. There is never a dull moment!”

Banitska Ford Airlie Electronics
We travel the world over in search of what we desire and often discover it when we return back home. Banitska Ford, (Bee), was fortunate to spend many of her younger years travelling overseas, before returning home to Melbourne. After getting itchy feet to see more of the world, she decided to travel across Australia and discovered the beauty of the Whitsundays. In love with the surroundings, she based her career working on the Whitsunday islands and mainland, working up to management positions within the local tourism and hospitality industry. Craving a change of direction, Bee took a position with a marine electrical company, and soon found herself managing a majority of the day-to-day running of the business. With her practical experience, knowledge and management expertise, she wanted the opportunity to set up her own business, with a strong focus on customer service and quality workmanship. At this stage of her life, she felt she would be crazy not to take the plunge so, with her business partner Kenny Nicoll, they established Airlie Electronics. Bee commented, “We are currently undergoing some exciting changes with a rebrand and new marketing techniques through social media. However, our core focus will remain the same. Which is to provide a quality marine electronics and electrical service, with old-school attention to detail and personalised customer service.” Bee has drawn many of her business principals from family, who have been her inspiration in starting her own business. “My grandmother was an inspiration to me growing up. She owned milk bars and motels, and I worked with her from a young age. She was hard working and I was blessed with her strong work ethic and the desire to create a future for my family. “My father also owns his own business and is very successful in what he does because of the way he interacts with people. He had a way of making people happy and I try to do the same with my business. A smile means everything, whether it’s a happy customer or having a beer with the locals on a Friday afternoon. It’s all about people,” Bee said. Bee has also learned that being able to trust your instinct is an important aspect of business. “Over time you learn to trust your instinct and go with your gut feeling. If something feels bad, then don’t do it. When something has a good feeling about it, go for it. It can be about risk, but you need to feel good about the outcome,” Bee said. Bee is a single mother with a four year old daughter and knows the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.

“Having a network you can rely on is crucial, both inside and outside of the business. I have a fantastic team I can rely on to get the job done, as well as amazing family and friends who are there for advice and support.” Togetherness is an important aspect to both family life and life in business. Without people, a business can’t be a family.

Rowena moved to the Whitsundays, and worked on Daydream Island, two years after working in herbal medicine manufacture in India. She loves the heat, views, and weather of the tropics and soon found herself calling the Whitsundays home. Her passion for camping and outdoors flourished in the beautiful surroundings of the childhood home, with fond memories of her tree house and spending time with the family. ‘I have wonderful childhood memories of sitting in the tree house my dad built, watching chooks in the yard, smelling mums cooking, and hanging with my brother who to this day is my best mate in the whole world. I am truly blessed.’ ‘Having my own multi-modality clinic was a goal I had even before finishing uni. I pictured a place where people could come to learn about how easy it can be to get healthy once you have the right advice and direction from qualified health professionals.’ Rowena is now offering naturopathy acupuncture, audiology, psychology, cooking classes, food intolerance testing, heavy metal testing and Hemaview live blood testing within her Stewart Drive Clinic with more to come. It was this holistic vision that drew her newest team member Becky, resident acupuncturist to her clinic. ‘Becky is our newest team member and a great asset. I am honoured to introduce her to my patients as her skill set will bring great relief to those in need.’

‘I’m very close to my family. I visit them in Sydney and Melbourne every chance I get. I just bought a tinny, although I have never had a boat in my life, I call it ‘Row Your Boat’. I love chatting to my clients about where is good to fish, as boating is such a massive culture in the Whitsundays.’ Rowena is not only driven within her business, but finds the challenge of mountain climbing magnetic. ‘I have stood at the peak of mountains in the Himalaya, Tanzania, Venezuela and many others. Seeing Everest from the crest of the peak close to base camp changed my perspective on everything. The earth and nature are magnificent!’ Rowena believes that there is a greater cause, and that contributing to your community is essential for self-worth. ‘Selfless service to those in need is more rewarding than anything... Do it without ego.’ www.corelife.com.au 61

Michelle
LANDRY
When you wake in the morning and know that your boss is the Prime Minister of Australia, you know you have done something right. Michelle believes that this path is possible for any determined woman. You just need to be prepared to work for it. Michelle wasn’t born into wealth. Her parents, Bill and Gloria Martin, were small business owners, who ran ‘Lucky Daniels casket agency’ in William Street, Rockhampton. As a 12-year-old, Michelle stood on a box behind the counter and wrote out casket tickets. Michelle understood from a young age that running a business and raising a family was a tough road to take. She drew inspiration from her mother, who instilled in her the character of putting others first and rolling up your sleeves to get a job done. Her mother would cook and clean, work at Lucky Daniels, look after her children and prepare dinner. Then change into her nursing uniform to work the night shift at the base hospital. It’s a trait that Michelle now draws from in her journey as the Federal Member for Capricornia. Michelle enjoyed a varied career, working as a pathology lab technician and for NAB bank, before opening her own bookkeeping business. Her father was Vice President of the Young Liberals and Michelle later also became a member, before switching to Young Nationals. In 2010, Michelle was encouraged to run as a candidate for Capricornia. It was both terrifying and exciting for Michelle, who didn’t win her first campaign, but used the experience to achieve an 8.4% swing against the sitting member at the following election. She won Capricornia with a further 4.45% swing. She is the only female MP to sit with the National Party in Australia’s House of Representatives. Considering she didn’t enter politics until she was 50, Michelle is a shining example of how it is never too late to achieve something truly great. “My mother, Gloria, taught me that hard work and good manners can take you to places of which you never dreamed. I have learnt along my journey through politics that it is important to stick to your principals. You will never be able to please absolutely everybody, so you need to stand firm and do what you believe is right. “Listen to people and listen to their concerns. As members of parliament, we may not always get along, but we understand that everyone has a job to do and everyone is to be treated with respect, no matter which party they represent. That is as important in life as it is within the walls of Parliament. Treat others with respect and in turn you will be respected,” Michelle said. 62 www.corelife.com.au

Allison Cunningham
In 2008, Allison Cunningham and her husband packed up their life in Nelson Bay, NSW, and headed around Australia for nearly two years in their camper trailer, before arriving amongst the fields of sugar cane in Mackay. Allison had worked in the real estate industry since leaving school and, after, seeing how poorly some vendors were being neglected due to overcommitment by their agent, Allison had the desire to open her own business, one with a primary focus on people. Pinpoint Property believes in quality over quantity, ensuring a minimal number of rental and sale properties are looked after at any given time. All clients of Pinpoint Property are given a high level of customer service. With an emphasis on open communication and personalised attention, Pinpoint Property is swelling with success. Since founding the business in 2010, Allison has had two children, now aged two years and five months old. Her day begins at 4:30am and finishes at 9pm and she has become a master of prioritizing and organisation. With a team of five ladies at Pinpoint Property, and 14 children between them, the focus is on creating a family-friendly environment, promoting a healthy work / life balance. “It’s not a normal nine to five position so in the time you have to work, you work hard to achieve what you need to. We all work different hours, ensuring there is always someone available to help when a client needs us. It’s about loving what you do and finding the balance between work love and family love. People can easily relate to us,” Allison said. Allison hopes that she can inspire other women to continue achieving their goals; “Being a mother shouldn’t give you limits and be your only title. It’s a wonderful extension of who you already are”, she said.
Danielle Law
Pinpoint Property’s residential sales agent, Danielle Law, is also a mother of two boys, aged five years and two years. With a start to her day of 3.45am, she places a strong emphasis on energy management. She believes this is essential in order to have the energy to be a great mum, while also delivering a professional service to her real estate clients. She credits an active lifestyle, quality nutrition and kicking a footy around the back yard with her husband and boys for the energy she needs to get through a long day. Whether it’s a walk along the Bluewater Trail or a yoga session, keeping active allows her to balance the chaos of a busy life.

She began a career in sales and marketing 11 years ago covering a range of industries, from health and media through to real estate. Her marketing and media experience has enabled her to differentiate from traditional methods of real estate advertising, ensuring her clients are receiving maximum exposure to the buyers’ market. As a working mother of two, Danielle understands how stressful selling a home can be on the whole family. Her greatest wish is for her sons to grow to be healthy, positive young men with a strong work ethic. She understands that by acting with integrity, she is being the best role-model possible for them. www.corelife.com.au 63

With Michelle’s make over we wanted to create a fun, exciting change but still keep within Michelle’s comfort zone. Michelle was brunette, and has been going through the slow and painful process of going blonde and growing out her length.

MODEL Michelle > STYLIST Teal Keating > MAKE UP ARTIST Sarah Saunders
AFTER
With Michelle’s make up, Sarah wanted to complement this natural look and give Michelle a look she could wear out to dinner or a special event. Sarah created soft pearly mokey eyes, complimented by gorgeous eyelash extensions and a medium foundation coverage. Sarah then contoured the lips and highlighted the cheeks, finishing with very natural lips, which are huge this autumn and winter.
With Michelle’s super fun personality we decided that her colour definitely needed a freshen up. We cleaned up her blonde and brought it to life with a gorgeous pearly ash toner. This beautiful tone will help bring out Michelle’s amazing eyes and add more colour into her skin. Teal then cut Michelle’s hair strong and blunt, a trend that you will see plenty of this season. The fashion style cut at the moment is just on the collar bones or above the shoulders. It’s a fantastic length as it’s not too short and still gives Michelle length to play with. To complete Michelle’s hair, Teal styled her hair sharp and straight using the Cloud Nine Iron. www.corelife.com.au 67
what is hypoxi HYPOXI is the first training concept to combine alternating high and low pressure with exercise to help target fat in those areas which just won’t budge. The simple 30 minute workout is safe, pain free and completely natural, helping your body to tap into stubborn fat stores while you work out. In just 12 sessions, clients can lose up to 30 centimetres from their problem areas. More than what you would generally see from conventional training alone. Before HYPOXI, no training method could be shown to reduce fat in targeted areas of the body. However, an independent study has shown that a HYPOXI workout is significantly superior to a conventional workout when it comes to targeting fat and cellulite in stubborn areas. In fact, HYPOXI has been hailed the “natural alternative to liposuction “ by Oxygen magazine. HYPOXI has a cult following of users worldwide, including a raft of celebrities like Robbie Williams and Cheryl Cole.
WHY HYPOXI WORKS?
Short of going under the knife, exercise is critical for sustainable weight loss . But many of us don’t like the idea of going to the gym or having a personal trainer. When we do try to exercise, we don’t see results in the
areas that bother us the most. This is where HYPOXI can help. HYPOXI is the brainchild of Dr Norbert Egger, an esteemed Austrian sport scientist. Over the course of many years working in the weight loss industry, he noticed that many women struggled to reduce fat in their problem areas of the stomach, hips, buttocks and thighs despite regular exercise and a healthy diet . As a sport scientist, Egger knew that good circulation, exercise and a healthy lifestyle are critical to achieve weight loss in a specific area. With this knowledge in mind, he set about developing the revolutionary training concept that is HYPOXI. HYPOXI is revolutionary because it is the first patented training concept to combine advanced compression technology with exercise to kick start your body in those trouble spots. A fast and sustainable weight loss treatment, independent studies have shown it to be up to 3 times more effective than regular training for targeted fat loss.
DESIGN THAT body YOU ALWAYS WANTED. The simple 30 minute workout is safe, pain free and completely natural - helping your body to tap into stubborn fat stores while you work out. FROM HEARTBREAK Often we hear of the heartbreak many people face when they have difficulty getting pregnant. Even more traumatic is when falling pregnant isn’t the problem, but carrying your child full term is. Miscarriage is a distressing and daunting time for anyone wanting children. Not only is there the pain of knowing that your child didn’t make it into the world but, often, there is no reason as to why it happens. When it happens on multiple occasions, the confusion turns into deep sadness. Jane Filewood endured four disheartening miscarriages. Her doctor couldn’t tell her why this was happening. She had no problem falling pregnant, but she was yet to successfully carry a child to full term. Jane looked into the possibility of IVF, to see if this would help. However, because her issue had nothing to do with physical conception, there was no guarantee that the procedure would help. It would have been a very expensive option to have gone through, with little guarantee it would make a difference.
I would recommend Scott to anyone. Not only were the acupuncture sessions effective, he took the time to talk about how I was feeling so there was a level of emotional support that you wouldn’t normally get from the doctor,” Jane said.
Jane reached a point where she felt she had nothing more to lose and investigated a range of natural therapy options. To her surprise, the best option she found within Australia was located right here in Mackay, with Scott Martin at Australian Natural Fertility.
Jane chose to give her a body a break from pregnancy and began acupuncture and herbal therapy with Scott. It assisted with her stress and anxiety and helped her to sleep better at night. Without even trying, she discovered she was pregnant and spoke to Scott about therapy during the pregnancy to keep the baby safe.
“Scott explained to me that the body was enduring an internal stress which was causing the pregnancies to miscarry. With every miscarriage it only got worse, as I was full of anxiety, scared about losing another baby. He explained my insides were like a bull in a china shop and I needed relaxation techniques to work through that inner turmoil. “I’m the kind of person that needs to know why something is happening, so it was nice to actually get some sort of explanation from a professional.

family
With Scott’s reassurance, Jane was much calmer throughout the pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy boy, Leo, who is 18 months old in June. They have since moved to Western Australia to be closer to Jane’s family. Australian Natural Fertility can assist with a range of issues relating to pregnancy. If you are experiencing anxiety or difficulty in your journey to parenthood, give Dr Scott Martin a call to see how he may be able to assist you.

Luscious Lips.. How to protect your looks and your most important asset, your lips, in the harsh world of business is important. Business stress, long hours, topped with the tropical climate and vicious sun damage results in “bar code” lines around the mouth and loss of your youthful beauty… Note I have not even mentioned smoking, and I won’t, as you all know that smoking dramatically worsens your loss of volume, your skin surface and deepens your lines. I promise I will not mention it at all, not even the heart disease, strokes, cancer or damage to your kids that it causes! You all know so I am saying nothing… The younger generation is enlightened more than the baby boomers in relation to the attractiveness of a tan. Great news, brown skin is becoming less sexy and the need to be brown is fading (pardon the pun!) For those that still want the brown look, go get a spray tan rather than a sun tan and you will get many more years before you need Botox and fillers! So slip, slop slap, etc EVERY DAY of your wonderful life here in paradise. It is because you live in paradise that you need to SSS every day. Stress, fatigue, self abuse (alcohol, excessive working hours) and inadequate relaxation time will all pay their price to highly successful women in business. The harder you work, the harder you need to play to keep everything in balance, Yin and Yang. You do need to exercise more vigorously to burn off the built up adrenaline of stress, eat extra fresh fruit and vegies and possibly multi-vitamins to keep your anti-oxidants up high. Keep a positive outlook on life and expect the wonderful things to happen that you plan and that you work hard to achieve – it is incredible what you can achieve with a dream, a plan and persistence and positivity! At the end of the day, your luscious lips can always be topped up to their former glory if you need some help by the magic of fillers! Treat yourself – you deserve it. Enjoy the fruits of your labour and with steps that we lay out above, the vicious time monster can be defeated…

HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR BUSINESS? Hi. How are you? No, REALLY, how are YOU? And how is business? If you own your own business, it’s generally accepted that long hours, huge workloads and heaps of stress come with the territory. Some of us have physical roles in our businesses, others work behind the scenes, but the burden of responsibility is a constant. Stress is your “fight or flight” response to a situation. Hormones are released to help us deal with a situation that endangers us quickly by fighting or running. When we experience stress regularly and constantly our health is compromised resulting in depression, fatigue, inflammatory conditions and much worse. Being stressed, or suffering ill health (and often these two are related), can affect your business directly in many ways. Your decisions, energy levels, interpersonal relations and productivity can be adversely affected by a bout of illness or stress. Not to mention how all of this affects your home life. Just think for a moment how your wellbeing, attitude, energy levels, and decision making impacts your business. Because you are so important to every aspect of your business, its absolutely crucial that you are physically and mentally healthy. Any risk management expert will tell you the owners health is a serious risk factor for small business success. So ask yourself, again, how you are, and think about how your business might benefit from taking some steps towards better general health. Every time you take some time to switch off from all you have to do, exercise, plan healthy meals, meditate, listen to music, spend time with your kids, laugh, play, sleep, love and sing, you are decreasing your stress and improving your health.
And that’s just good business!

Looking after our Kids Our children are bombarded with advertising constantly telling them that McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, KFC, Subway, energy drinks and coke are Good. leading them to believe that it is Ok to consume them. And they are right, as McDonald’s funds the Ronald McDonald house and they wouldn’t do that if they were bad, or put them right near a school if they were bad would they? Or sell them toys to entice them into the big clown store if the food wasn’t good for them… Would they?? This is similar when we go into places we call groceries stores to buy so called groceries and all we find is 10 aisles of packed sugar and preservatives in different colours with different labels. This is where I was reminded again the influence of marketing and I can’t keep it to myself any longer. Watching children buy a bag full of coke, energy drinks, lollies and McDonald’s. This is before school.. My first reaction was I am so glad I am not their teacher. My second reaction was deep sadness and a sense of social responsibility. Do these kids have parents that they know what they are buying and what it does to them.. there is real health concerns with this. I would even go as far to call it voluntary genocide. Let’s look at just one health concern from this. Diabetes. I will leave childhood obesity, or learning disability, for another day. Childhood diabetes is on the rise. Diabetes is seen as the ‘silent pandemic’ we hear that there is no cure for diabetes, however, we know it is a lifestyle disease and it can be prevented “Diabetes mellitus has become one of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world, representing one of the most challenging public health problems of the 21st century.
It is a metabolic disease characterised by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia) which may arise from defects in the secretion of insulin, defects in insulin action, or both. Diabetes results in substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly from cardiovascular complications, eye and kidney diseases and limb amputations. Approximately 1 million Australians have been diagnosed with diabetes including an estimated 130,000 people with type1 diabetes. Australia has the 7th highest prevalence and 6th highest incidence of type 1 diabetes in children aged 0-14 years, according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2010, 2011. I understand people are busy. I understand that sometimes kids do stuff without their parents knowing, but when are we going to say as a collective this is not OK? When are we going to teach our children as obviously, it is too late for the parents. Children that what they eat affects their health. As my 15 year old son says, “it is a simple cause and effect rule”. In this case you eat large amounts of sugar, your pancreas goes into distress, you get diagnosed with diabetes, you end up at risk of losing limbs, eyesight and having heart disease and you are only 30!! Potentially dying before your parents. It’s time to educate our children on the hazards of life, and what they put into their mouth is what they become. Every cell that is us has come from what we have eaten. Let’s make it a tree that will bear in lots of beautiful healthy fruit!

Stop the WAR on OBESITY IN ROOM PROCEDURES - Vasectomies with light sedation. There will be no Anesthetic fee for this - Varicose vein treatment - Skin cancer surgery
The notion that thin people are healthy and large people are unhealthy is false. Our obsession with achieving the ideal weight and body shape has not made us healthier or happier (or slimmer for that matter). In fact, it has left us with widespread problems of overweight, eating disorders, malnutrition, size bullying, discontent, self-loathing and depression. It’s time to take a new approach to health & wellness and stop the ‘war on obesity’. It’s time to focus on promoting healthy, happy lifestyles for children and adults.
When you choose to have these procedures done at my Rooms only my fee is involved.
Let’s adopt a new mantra: “Live actively, eat well and feel good about yourself and others.” Let’s take a different approach and ask how can we be healthier at the size we are now? How can we improve health without obsessing over weight loss? How can we reduce stress and enjoy a normal lifestyle that embraces living actively and eating well? What would this new approach look like?
OUR OPENING HOURS WILL NOW BE EXTENDING TO A SATURDAY FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF THOSE PATIENTS WITH BUSY LIFESTYLES, WORK COMMITMENTS & WHO LIVE OUT OF TOWN
Self-acceptance: Respect and appreciate the diversity of body shapes and sizes (including your own!). Health enhancement: Focus on wellness in body, mind and spirit; focus on overall health and well-being. A healthy lifestyle is achievable by everyone unlike the so called ‘ideal weight’. The pleasure of eating well: Rediscover normal eating - tune in to hunger and fullness and enjoy full nutrition, balance and variety; all foods can fit. The joy of movement: Enjoy physical activities everyday for the pleasure and health benefits they deliver rather than for the sole purpose of calorie burning. An end to size bias: Recognize that body shape, size and/or weight are not evidence of any particular way of eating, level of physical activity, personality, psychological issue, or moral character; confirmation that there is beauty and worth in EVERY body.

it’s time to make the time
In times of stress and ‘busyness’ the first thing we put to the side is our own fitness, which ultimately affects our health. Is this something you would have said to yourself at some time or other... “I’m too busy” or “I’m so stressed out, there’s too much to do” therefore, you skip the training session you planned on doing? However, just 30 minutes per day (2% of the total time in your day) will actually HELP make the symptoms of stress and pressure more bearable. Possibly release them altogether! If you can leave your desk for 30 minutes to exercise, release some pent-up energy, and head back to work with a clearer train of thought, feeling more refreshed and energised than when you started, why would you consider NOT exercising! So why is it the first thing we don’t do? Commiting to keep yourself healthy and active is more crucial than anything else in hard times. Numerous studies have found that exercise is a natural anti-depressant and stress reliever, due to the “happy endorphins”, the chemicals released during exercise. If you are in a slump, or starting to fatigue, you will instantly have more energy, and enthusiasm, to do the tasks at hand. If you are an employer, you need to lead your team from the top! Set the example and encourage your team to keep fit as well. Go one better and train together! If you are an employee, you owe it to all your colleagues to be upbeat, motivated and energetic every day! Put a plan in place to make sure it happens!! If you are self-motivated and
know you can do it yourself, lock it in your diary. If you need get out of bed 30 minutes earlier, DO IT! We all like extra sleep in winter with the cooler weather, but how bad of an excuse is that! If you have time after work, meet up with a friend. If you know you need to have an appointment with someone to actually do it, and to make sure you are doing it correctly, that’s where we will hold you accountable. I challenge EVERYONE reading this article, regardless of how busy or stressed you may think you are, to commit to yourself for a whole working week to exercise EVERY day for a minimum of 30 minutes. See how much better you feel for it. Let’s stop complaining that we haven’t got time to exercise and MAKE the time! The benefits and additional productivity, both personal and professional, are too huge to ignore! As the Dalai Lama once said, “Man sacrifices his health in order to make money, then he sacrifices his money in order to recuperate his health.” Don’t be a statistic. Bluetooth Appsolutely Brilliant Bluetooth compatible hearing aids have been present in the market for around 4 years now. Although initially there were some teething problems they have mostly been ironed out and they are very reliable. Up until recently most Bluetooth hearing aids required an interface device to either be worn around the neck, or within close proximity of the mobile phone in order for it to transmit the information from the phone to the hearing aids. This means you need to carry around an extra device as well as your mobile phone on your person. The reason for this is that most hearing aids do not have the capacity to transmit and receive compatible mobile Bluetooth data directly and the interface device had to translate the smartphone or tablet data into a signal that the hearing aids can understand. There are now hearing aid manufacturers that combine cutting edge hearing aid
technology with smart phone technology to deliver revolutionary new hearing solutions that allow smart phone and tablet data to stream directly to hearing aids without the need for any extra neckloops or interface devices. So now you can stream all your smartphone information from facetime conversations to phone calls to listening to music, without the hassle of neckloops getting in the way or having to remember to carry both phone and interface device. What’s more the direct Bluetooth connection also allows other applications to work in conjunction with your hearing aids. You can now also use apps to use your smartphone as a remote control to adjust the volume, treble and bass, and program/memory settings, and adjust background noise settings. You can also personalize sound settings to any environment and save those settings and your hearing aids
then automatically goes into that setting each time you enter into that environment in future. Another great feature is the apps allow the smartphone to act as an external microphone and stream directly to the hearing aids. For example if attending church or a lecture you can place your smartphone on the lectern and it will pick up the speakers voice and transmit it wirelessly via Bluetooth directly to your hearing aids. The speaker’s voice will be clearer and you can also adjust the volume of their voice to whatever level suits you. For some, the most appealing capability of the app might be the tracking feature which allows the user to find their hearing aids if they were unsure of where they were. The hearing aids emit a signal which the smartphone can use to track its location, very handy for those that misplace their hearing aids frequently!
GRANT COLLINS Audiologist - Clarity Hearing Solutions
Other apps will inevitably be made for these devices which will not be manufacturer specific, for example there are numerous different tinnitus (ringing sounds in the ears) treatment masking apps which can be downloaded and streamed directly to the hearing aids, again alleviating the need to wear a neckloop with aids while you sleep. You could also test to see if your hearing has changed via hearing test apps and log any changes which can be useful information for your audiologist.

hair reduction There are many advantages of light based permanent hair reduction. These include excellent long term results, fast treatments that only take a few minutes, no down time and great for reducing hair from large areas. The hair reduction works by targeting the pigment in the hair, all the way to the bottom, which permanently destroys the hair follicle. With each treatment, more and more hair in the growth phase, called the anagen phase, is permanently removed. This can be performed on just about any surface of the body including face, back, chest, under-arm, arms, legs and bikini, to name just a few.

After the procedure it may feel like a mild sunburn sensation for a short period of time. However, there is no downtime and you can resume normal daily activities immediately. With advanced systems, such as the Palomar Starlux 500, treatment is safe for most skin types from very fair skin to dark skin. This is because of its advanced cooling and how the light is delivered to the skin. As with all lasers and light based permanent hair removal, blonde hairs will not be removed. The specific frequencies of light are attracted to pigment, so if there is no pigment in the hair, it will not be effective. So liberate yourself from constant shaving, painful regular waxing or tedious electrolysis and consider permanent light based hair removal.

MEGAN WASHINGTON One of the most anticipated artists to grace the stage is multiple ARIA award-winner Megan Washington. Core Magazine was able to chat with Megan about life and music, although anticipation still builds as to when we can expect to see the release of Megan’s second album.
One of the most anticipated EVENTs of 2014 is fast approaching, as River Sessions is set to be bigger and better than ever. An unrivalled party of sweet sounds and fun under the sun will explode onto the Mackay Showgrounds on Saturday, June 28.
Q: DO YOU BELIEVE THAT GROWING UP IN A DIFFERENT CULTURE HAS INFLUENCED HOW YOU VIEW THE WORLD?
Q: FOR ALL THE IMPATIENT FANS OUT THERE, CAN YOU GIVE US AN INDICATION ON HOW FAR AWAY YOUR SECOND ALBUM RELEASE IS?
A: I think it made me much more open to travelling, to making nests all over the world.
A: Ha! Not too long now.
Q: WHAT WAS IT THAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE MUSIC AS A CAREER? A: I don’t think I ever really chose it. I just started doing it and never stopped. The thing about being a songwriter is that it forces you to keep growing, keep changing, keep exploring your insides. So much so that doing anything else feels really weird and stagnant.
Q: YOU WERE BORN IN PAPAU NEW GUINEA, GREW UP IN BRISBANE BUT HAVE BEEN LIVING MORE RECENTLY IN Q: HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOUR SYDNEY AND LONDON…WHICH OF ALBUM, “I BELIEVE YOU LIAR”, WENT THESE FEEL MOST LIKE HOME? PLATINUM? DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT A: At the moment, Sydney is feeling the most like YOU WERE DOING AT THE TIME YOU home, but I’m beginning to get itchy feet and will FOUND OUT? most likely be back in London before too long. I’ve been moving around, nomadic, for so long, it just feels normal.
Q: YOU’VE TALKED ABOUT OVERCOMING THE NEED FOR VICES AND ESCAPING A TURBULENT LOVE LIFE CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED THROUGH YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY? A: Always trust your instincts. Don’t over analyse. Don’t coerce yourself into doing things that feel fishy. Don’t compromise. Do what you want. Stand up for yourself.
A: I have absolutely no idea. I think it had been platinum for a while before I found out about it. www.corelife.com.au 81

chia
crazy for
Kelly Slater loves them and it seems that the rest of Australia is crazy for chia! But, is this just another un-founded ‘super-food’ hype. or are there real benefits to be enjoyed from these tiny seeds?
Where have they come from?
Chia seeds are an ancient super-food, experiencing a royal renaissance. They were once a staple of the Aztec, Incan and Mayan cultures and were held in such high regard that they were used for religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes.
What are the benefits?
Chia is the Mayan word for strength. A name gifted to the power-packed seed which provided ancient South American cultures with energy and vitality. Running messengers would carry a pouch of the seeds as an energy-rich food, which provided sustained nutrition. No wonder high-intensity athletes are among some of chia’s greatest advocates. What makes chia amazing is the range of goodness packed into these tiny morsels.
High in fibre – which can aid digestion and intestinal health.
Essential fatty acids – Omega 3 and 6. Although it should not be taken as a substitute for the fatty acids found in fish as they differ slightly in composition.
High in protein – without cholesterol. Calcium – for stronger teeth and bones. Vitamins and minerals – packed with a range of essential goodness for
wellbeing.
Antioxidants – to help nourish your body and skin from the inside out. Because chia seeds are small, and your daily serve is small, they aren’t a replacement to other nutritious foods. Rather a clever way to ‘top up’ your daily health essentials while bulking out your food to help you feel fuller for longer. This sustained release of energy as well as being supported by a host of nutritional benefits is why chia seeds can help with weight loss, increase energy levels, assist in heart and brain health and reduce the risks of a number of diseases.
How much should I eat? A tablespoon of chia each day is recommended. Because of the high fibre content, more than a tablespoon of chia may cause stomach upset for people with digestion sensitivity.
How do I use it? Chia is best consumed raw to get the full range of nutritional benefits. Organic and natural are best, so check the label. You can bake chia seeds, however, the heat may break down the Omega 3, but you will still receive the other advantages.
Chia gel – Chia seeds absorb moisture so the easiest way to consume them is to turn them into a jelly-like gel. Simply soak in water, or any liquid, for 20 minutes. Try soaking them in warmed fruit to thicken the texture, then add the fruity mixture to yoghurt or on top of pancakes. Anything can be made from the gel, from desserts to smoothies. The gel can be kept in the fridge for up to a week. Chia seeds – If you prefer the crunchy texture, add them straight into a smoothie and
consume immediately. Sprinkle over yoghurt or cereal in the morning or on top of peanut butter toast for added crunch. You can simply eat them raw or use as a thickening agent in gravy, meatballs and sausage rolls.
Ground Chia – Grind the chia into a powder to be used in baking, to bulk out the nutritional benefits of biscuits, muffins and breads. A coffee grinder can be used to grind the seeds. 84 www.corelife.com.au
Refreshing recipe
Instead of reaching for another coffee for your afternoon pick-up, try this refreshing and nutritious chia tangelo smoothie. for a drink that’s far more suited to our tropical climate!
If you like a crunchy texture in your smoothie, similar to raspberry seeds, then add the chia seeds straight from the packet, otherwise, use a pre-made chia gel, which has been soaked in a delicious fruit juice. -

exchanging your cash Usually, travellers are warned to avoid buying their foreign currency at airports, and for good reason. Once you are about to leave, you are a captive of the providers because you are out of time and there is nowhere else to go. There is one exception to this rule and you will find it at the Mackay Airport. Crown Currency offers the same great deals at the airport as it does in all its outlets. Customers are not being squeezed!
Crown also offers greatly discounted first class travel insurance products, 20% off. In addition, are TravelSIM cards that provide affordable telephone contact from 190 or so countries are available.
Director, Henry Koster, says that the reason Crown is in business is to “help make our customers’ travels a little easier.” Crown does this by providing a great service and fantastic rates.
The MasterCard cash passport may also have a place in your plans so ask about those too.
Business development manager, Tania Lewis, says, “Crown does not charge fees or commission and has a special rate for seniors. With the first 10 minutes of free parking at the airport, customers can come and go easily, without a parking cost.” Crown carries over 60 currencies including Indonesian, Thai, Malaysia, Filipino, Vietnamese, Malaysian, PNG, Brunei, and Chinese, to name a few. All European currencies are in stock. Consultants are happy to take telephone orders and are able to assist customers with advice as to the best currency to take.
Wiring money overseas is also much cheaper when done through Crown. Rates are usually better than those offered by banks. The consultants can give you details. Crown’s home page is www.crowncurrency.com.au. Crown Currency Exchange at the Airport is a one-stop shop for all your money needs! It’ll pay to check out their offerings on insurance etc too. Customers may call the shop on 4952 4444 and pre-order. Collect the foreign as you board. Email for a quote: mackay@crowncurremcy.com.au.

Planning in advance
Timing is everything when it comes to grabbing a great travel deal. Generally speaking, May is the cheapest month to be traveling overseas from Australia. However, knowing when to look out for booking a bargain is the key. The best earlybird months for the travel deals of the year usually occur between August and October. The secret is to be on every mailing list possible, to know when the best sales are hitting the market.
Booking your flights
If you miss the earlybird sales, then last-minute bookings can also save a bundle, but it depends on which country you are traveling to. Different markets dictate when different destinations lower their prices to attract bookings. For example, New Zealand and Bali traditionally have cheaper ticket prices six weeks prior to departure.
Booking accommodation
When it comes to booking your accommodation, use websites such as wotif.com to judge the price of the market, then ring the hotel you wish to stay at to negotiate a cheaper rate, or an upgrade with extra luxuries. With accommodation, most of what you pay for is actually the brand. Think of the times you have stayed in a large chain hotel, only to be disappointed with the tiny room and the view of the skyscraper next door. Look for a low-budget apartment block and compare what you will get for your money. Be sure to check travel reviews of the premises prior to booking to see how other travelers rated the experience. This is particularly true in many Asian countries. A small room in a bigbrand hotel can still cost AUD $300 per night, whereas there are hundreds of boutique hotels, offering rooms twice the size for AUD $30 per night. Start your search by isolating cheap hotel options, then explore what the best room is they have on offer. You may be surprised at how little luxury can cost when you see past the name on the door.
Overseas currency
Accessing cash overseas can be an expensive exercise. You won’t want to travel with a large amount of cash on you, so investigate which banks have the best rates for accessing money overseas. Exercise caution, especially in south-east Asian countries, if you need to exchange cash. Some places can offer less than a third of what other businesses will, scamming unsuspecting tourists who aren’t sure of what the exchange rate should be.
Mobile Phones
If you plan on using your cell phone overseas, talk to your provider about a global roaming package before you leave. Another option is to purchase a SIM card in the country you are traveling to, although if you don’t speak the language, it can be a difficult transaction. Explore the range of Apps available, which can give you GPS directions or translation services, without chewing your mobile data. Navfree is a free app for iPhone and Android. It turns a GPS smartphone into a sat-nav, with pre-loaded maps, route planning and voice prompts. Once downloaded, it doesn’t need any internet data to access its maps via GPS.
secrets
Whether you dream of going on safari in the Serengheti or seek to snorkel a reef in the Pacific, you don’t have to splash all of your cash to get there. With a little prior planning, and some time spent researching the options, you can cut your holiday spending bill in half, leaving more of a slush fund for cocktails beside the pool.

basic bait fishing We were anchored inside a calm coral reef lagoon when the call was made “has everyone has enough to eat”? Everyone was happily fed so the dinner’s left overs were scraped over the side for the fish. Ten minutes had passed by and the crew decided to wet a line again after the days already successful fishing efforts. It didn’t take long and a solid red throat emperor was hooked up and brought on board. This fish was probably around the 2.5 kg mark and very fat. Fat to the point my decky said, “What’s this thing got in its guts”? He opened it up and surprisingly 6 cherry tomatoes popped out on the bait board!! Maybe this is the secret bait? Maybe expensive squid and pilchards is not the best bait after all!! I don’t think so but it does prove that fish are scavengers and will eat almost anything even if it is left over salad! I had a similar occasion when 10 minutes after scraping some lunch time leftovers in the water a solid coral trout around 4 kg spat out a slice of ham when it was brought onboard. It got me thinking about this editorial and tips and techniques on basic bait fishing for reef species. I hear it every day onboard when someone catches a nice fish, “what did you get him on?” So then everyone swaps from whatever bait they were using in the hope that their new bait will be the difference! I’m a big believer on fresh bait presented well. Presented well being the key. A big chunk of fish flesh with a hook embedded in it to me does not give you the best presentation and/or good chance of a solid hook up. In my eyes, your hook point must be exposed to give you the best chance of a solid hook up. I like to use a wide gape hook, which means you can still put on reasonable sized bait and the hook point and barb are still exposed. Pilchards are a soft bait, but one of my favourite. There are not many fish that swim that don’t eat the humble pilchard. Because they are soft, baiting them up does require some technique try keep them on the hook. I have found the eye socket the strongest part of a pilly. I like to put the hook through the eye socket twice then embed the hook through the body about half way down the pilchard. This way the bait hangs reasonably straight and all the weight is on the eye socket. Baiting up squid is not as technical but has a similar outcome with the bait remaining reasonably straight and the tentacles wiggling in the current. Fresh cut baits are also one of my favourite. A fillet of fresh fusilier or stripey is fantastic fresh bait. Don’t be frightened to use a big bait also. Big baits will attract small pickets which will in turn bring in the bigger fish. The good things the little ones can have a pick but won’t take the whole bait leaving something on the hook for the bigger fish to engulf. When baiting up a strip bait start at the top and pin through the slab 2 or 3 times but make sure the hook point and barb is exposed. Also make sure there are no scales stuck on the tip of the hook, as this will prevent the hook penetrating through a hard mouth through to the barb. It should have a reasonable part of bait still below the hook that can flap enticingly in the current! Even wings (the belly section) and fins from fish frames will be eaten by big fish and nothing is wasted when it come to processing your caught fish. If all else fails maybe try a slice of ham with cherry tomatoes on top!
