BEEN TOO MERRY OVER CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR? Been caught driving under the influence? Everyone makes mistakes

From the

Editor

With fixed fee pricing, let Eilidh from Whitsunday Law help you recover from it quickly Hi Everyone,

Eilidh McCallum - comes from a background of criminal law and is excited about learning Family Law, Property and Estates Eilidh can assist you with your criminal matter including offering fixed fee pricing for court attendances

Thank you for picking up the first edition of 2020! We are excited to be back after the Christmas break and are looking forward to bringing you many more engaging, colourful and inspiring publications again this year. I was visiting a friend last week to pick up a few of her son’s hand-medowns that were listed on a local buy/swap/sell site. After what turned into a lively playdate, we were ready to leave and I tried to hand over the $25 for the clothing. “No, don’t worry about it. Just pay it forwards,” she said. After much protesting (I’ve always felt uncomfortable accepting favours) I left with two bags full of beautiful clothing, $25 in my purse and a warm feeling inside. It got me thinking; the gift of giving, is not just for Christmas, surely it could be more a regular part of everyday life.

WHITSUNDAY LAW WISHES ALL OF OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR Contact our friendly staff for more information

Fortunately, that very afternoon I had the opportunity to pass on the favour. “Just pay it forwards,” I said when a friend tried to pay me for some items. It felt so good in so many ways. Not only did my friend receive a gift, I also got to experience the joy of giving, plus the knowledge that an unknown stranger would soon receive a surprise. The concept of paying it forward has been around for decades and became popular with the release of the movie of the same name in the year 2000. A school student changes many lives by doing good deeds for three people and asking them to ‘Pay It Forward’ as part of a school project. So, as we embark on a new decade, let’s put words into action and see how we can “Pay It Forward’ locally. I wonder how our small acts of kindness could change lives in the region. I challenge you to ‘Pay It Forward’ to three people and ask them to do it in return. We’d love to hear some of your stories so, if you would like to share, send us a PM on our Core Life Facebook page along with a picture. We will then share on our page and publish a story in the next issue with our favourites. Happy Giving Everyone!

SAVING MY WEDDING DAY! How The Whitsunday Wedding Industry Rallied Together As Disaster Struck

I

t was the phone call which left her speechless and in dismay. Only three weeks out from her dream wedding, Laura Goodridge received a phone call every bride-to-be would dread.

planned. At the time, Dan was still in the United Kingdom; the entire ordeal had caused them a great deal of distress not being together to tackle the nightmare.

Only three days prior, she had sat in the office of her wedding planner for three hours, going over the final preparations for her wedding. She paid the final 15 per cent of her contract that day. That was a Tuesday. On Friday, she received the phone call that would turn her world into disarray.

How Dan and Laura met…

“I was at work when one of the vendors, who is also a friend, informed me that the wedding planner had gone into voluntary insolvency that morning. I was in disbelief! Only two days after I had made the final payment with them and less than 12 hours after my final contract. I work around the corner from the office, so as shock manifested into rage, I stormed into their office. My heart was pounding and panic levels were rising. The owner wouldn’t speak to me and couldn’t look me in the eye. “I was informed by the accountant that the money had gone, there would be no refund and that I would need to talk to my vendors separately and see what they can do for me,” Laura commented. The next few hours were a whirlwind of emotions for Laura. She had to contact each of her vendors individually; this is where the feelings of hurt and betrayal turned into gratefulness. “After initially feeling completely screwed over; I realised that humanity really is wonderful, empathetic and caring. The vendors cried and commiserated with me, laughed with me and assured me everything would be ok,” Laura added. It didn’t come without significant personal cost. After talking with her vendors, Laura discovered it would cost her and her partner, Daniel Tappin, an additional $10,000 to have the wedding as

www.corelife.com.au 12 12 www.corelife.com.au

The couple have had an on-and-off relationship since their early 20’s, where Dan was a cook at a local late-night fast food joint in Plymouth, UK. They first stayed together for two years before amicably splitting, but remained good friends. They rekindled their relationship in Sydney five years later, but the timing wasn’t great and Dan had to move back to the UK. As fate would have it, they began to fall for each other again in 2017 when Laura visited the UK after a friend’s wedding in France. They made the long-distance relationship work for two years, during which Dan proposed to Laura at Cape Gloucester in December 2018. Dan wasn’t due to move to Australia permanently until two weeks before their wedding, so Laura faced the initial horror alone. But what could easily have turned into a disaster for this fateful couple, ended up being the best day of their lives. With generous vendors rallying to help the couple in any way they could, this story is less about heartache and more about love, with an industry determined to support one another and the community. “Since the vast majority of our guests travelled from the UK, we made the decision to come up with the additional cost to have the wedding we had dreamed about.” Laura added, “The wedding community here really is the best in the world, I cannot thank them enough. The day was perfect and wonderful and everything I imagined. It really brings me close to tears when I think about how I felt on the day we found out our money had been stolen, compared

to the wedding day which was full of love, my heart was certainly 100 times bigger.” With love from Laura and Dan, we thank the following vendors who rallied together to keep the wedding industry in the Whitsundays one of the best in the world.

Paradise Cove (Red Cat Adventures) “Ali and her team were truly sent from above! They covered everything, (except the overnight accommodation, they had no choice but to recharge us for that), free of charge. We could keep our dream location. She also took over the planning and co-ordination, and it was just perfect! I don't know how they did it all as they also had another effected wedding prior to ours.”

Fish D’Vine Catering “Rachel and Matthew at Fish D’Vine were amazing! They were so supportive and empathetic that they catered our wedding as it was on the contract, no changes at all, free of charge! The food was wonderful, all our guests were blown away by it.”

Karen Hill Floral Design “Karen was brilliant the whole time and completed our florals free of charge! She did not scrimp on her time or expertise, and the bouquets were everything I had imagined!”

Azure Weddings and Events Whitsundays “Felicity and her team are a credit to the community and they also fulfilled the contact at no extra charge. Lighting, tables, chairs, chill out areas and tablewear was provided by them. She also decorated the ceremony, canape area, and reception area, exactly as we dreamed. They are the best!”

Kombi Keg Whitsunday “Shirlz and Cam were such a comfort to me whilst it all went to hell and we were trying to pick up the pieces of our broken day. They offered their time and Sweeties (the Kombi's name) hire free of charge on the day and called in their own favours to get our kegs free of charge! Amazing, truly.”

Jan Harvey Celebrant “Jan is a very warm and caring person who has found her calling as a celebrant, we really could not have imagined being married by anyone else. She did our wedding free of charge. Again, the generosity of spirit within our community blows me away, my family could not believe that they all did this for us!” “Our other vendors were also incredibly supportive and accommodating; thank you to Drew Macdonald Photography, Adam and Eve Hair, Loll Doll Make up and Luke Miller Band.”

The Wedding… Laura and Dan were married at Paradise Cove on November 1. They enjoyed an intimate celebration with 30 friends and family; beginning with a beach ceremony, canapes and cocktails by the pool, followed by a buffet dinner. They had exclusive hire of the resort so their guests could utilise the property to the full extent including overnight accommodation. Being self-confessed nerds, Laura and Dan had an eclectic music selection for their big day, including The Never ending Story, The Rains of Castamere (from GoT), Insane Clown Posse and Queen. Loving all things Japanese, the couple had anime playing on the TV on Sweetie, both Spirited Away and Akira were shown. They are planning their Japanese honeymoon for late next year. “The funniest moment would be my father recounting how, that morning at the barber shop, he lost his moustache to an overeager stylist! Before he escorted me down the aisle it was only the second time in my 35 years that I've seen my father without it!” “Because we had a week before the wedding, all our guests had time to bond and get to know each other, so the day was honestly like one big family! Thanks to the Whitsunday wedding community, in my eyes, it was the best wedding ever.”

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Tappin!

Senior Wedding Executive, Caitlin Mcluskey, loves nothing more than a grand love story, but for her, nothing surpasses the love she felt giving birth to her two children. “It doesn’t get any better than 66 collective hours of sweaty, swearing, drug free labour followed by that almighty rush of love you are hit with when you meet them for the first time, it’s truly magical,” she said. Before finding her niche in the wedding industry, which she has now been working in for ten years, Caitlin was a career bar tender. To this day, she still enjoys a night out, heels on and cocktail in hand with her girl tribe. Born in Malaysia, her family moved back to Australia when Caitlin was four. Being an Army family, they moved a lot, but one place she felt was home more than any other was Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. “I’m a single Mum to two little ones and we have a kitten called Jessie. LET’S TALK MAKE-UP

Create your perfect wedding day look with Lauriely from Loll Doll Make-up Brooke Miles Photography

Brooke Miles Photography Timeless Images Vanessa Dale

Lauriely Taylor

“You made me feel beautiful.” These are the words every makeup artist wants to hear, and thankfully for leading MUA, Lauriely Taylor, she hears them often. “It’s all about natural enhancement,” Lauriely commented. “I want to ensure that a person still looks like themselves, just the best version possible. It’s about ensuring that the unique remnants are still there, that we enhance the magnificent and blur the rest. I call it the ‘filtered you’ where you become the most beautiful version of yourself possible.” Not only is Lauriely highly regarded for her flawless application, she is well known for the diversity of looks she can create; from barely there to bold and beautiful. As a trusted MUA for Core Life Magazine, she understands the correct application for makeup to photograph well. “As well as naturally enhanced, I adore the Hollywood Glamour look, that iconic Marilyn Monroe bright red lip and the dramatic eyeliner wing.” The secret behind the clear complexion, is Lauriely’s skill with airbrushing.

Nadine Kemp Photography

“Airbrush makeup feels incredibly light on the skin. The application is light and layered, so we can go from barely there to complete coverage. The feedback I receive is that ‘It doesn’t feel like I’m wearing any makeup’ yet it is long wearing, even in the heat and humidity of a Whitsundays summer. “I’m committed to excellent results so I only use the best brands in the business to achieve this. Our high-end makeup includes Nars, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay, Tarte Cosmetics, Too Faced and Youngblood to name a few.”

Brooke Miles Photography

What’s your wedding tip for brides-to-be? The easiest way for me to understand what you want to achieve is if you bring me a photo of a look you like. Immediately it puts us on the same page, and from there I can tweak it to suit your face. Also, allow an hour per person on the day for your makeup. Do you recommend a skincare regime?

12 years of experience as a MUA allows Lauriely to read her clients emotion and decipher the look they are after.

Yes! Absolutely. I would recommend this starts six months out if you have that time available. This is something I can help brides-to-be with as I have access to a wonderful range of products. There is a particular mask I leave on the night before I have a photo shoot or event myself and it just leaves the skin glowing the following morning.

“Communication is important to get a true understanding of their vision.”

What else can I do to look my best on my wedding day?

Do I need a makeup trial?

The two major things that affect the skin, is hydration and damage from the sun. Wear sunscreen every day and hydrate with plenty of water. Especially in the time leading up to your wedding day.

Most brides will opt for a trial, this is great as it gives us the opportunity to enhance anything required on the day. It’s mainly for peace of mind for the bride to know they will look fabulous. Trials aren’t a necessity though, I have the confidence to achieve the desired look on the day.

Candice Owens

EUROPEAN BOLD – Candice Owens. Classic beauty meets European boldness with Candice’s look. We used dark chocolates to bring out Candice’s eyes along with a strong brow to accentuate her gorgeous European features. With the strength emanating from her smokey eyes, a soft nude lip was the perfect choice to bring balance to the face. To achieve the look, we used Harlotte Cosmetics Afterglow foundation and Harlotte nude lip. For the eyes, we went to our much-loved Soft Glam Anastasia Beverly Hills Pallete. TIP - For a bold look like this, we recommend expert brow grooming and a bridal makeup trial to test the level of smokey you are prepared to wear. We recommend taking photos after the trial to see how you look and feel to make sure you are completely comfortable on your wedding day. PASTEL PINK WITH A POP OF PLUM Jordan McQueen. For Jordan’s big day, we matched her lipstick with the gorgeous deep plum she chose as a feature in her bridal bouquet and hairpiece. Her eyes were the focal point of achieving this look, incorporating beautiful pastel pinks, the deep

plum with smoldering smokey accents and a dash of glitter for subtle glam. To achieve this look, we used Harlotte Cosmetics Afterglow foundation for a flawless base. Modelrock Uptown brow products for onpoint brows, Huda Beauty Desert Rose pallete and Stilla cosmetics on the eyes, finished with a velvet matte lip colour for all-day wear. To achieve this look, eyebrows must be waxed to perfection. Trust your makeup artist to use colour and glitter to achieve a unique look which still represents luxe bridal beauty. TIP - Matte colour is often best for brides as it wears longer and won’t reflect the flash like a shine will. Gloss is often gone as soon as you’ve kissed your husband and you risk it sticking to your veil or hair. AT ONE WITH NATURE – Jacqui Bovey. With her long blonde locks and natural leaf headpiece, Jacqui’s eyes were brought out beautifully with this verdant colour pallete. With a focus on enhancing her natural beauty, we used a dark colour on the water line and a smokey eye technique with no upper lid liner to soften her gaze for a dreamy bridal look. Along the lines of a Greek Goddess theme, we based the colour around golds, browns and also used a touch of

Jordan McQueen

burgundy from MAC Cosmetics. Jacqui didn’t need much foundation, but to create the flawless finish we used Harlotte Cosmetics Afterglow foundation. Jacqui had complete trust in us with no bridal trial needed. We used her makeup as the final finishing touch to accessorise Jacqui’s wedding vision. THE CLASSIC BEAUTY – Katrina Howie. When you picture the classical bride, you envisage elegance. This was the style for Katrina Howie, so we kept every facet of her makeup natural to simply enhance what was already beautiful. To achieve Katrina’s look, we used Harlotte Cosmetics Afterglow foundation, complemented with the Keria Grab and Glow pallete for subtle colour. We finished with a nude pink Harlotte Exposed lipstick, again just accentuating what was already there. To finish the classic beauty look, Katrina’s eyes were finished with soft browns, short lashes and soft brows. TIP - Prepping your skin with good hydration and a quality skincare routine will allow your makeup to sit perfectly. This means we can achieve the look of a healthy glow using less foundation for flawless coverage.

Now I’m surrounded by a team of talented artists who work hard to take their profession to the next level. It’s the team dynamic that delivers the

This is evident in the business celebrating more than a decade in business, with long-term makeup artists helping to cement Funk It Up’s reputation in the makeup and beauty business. Corissa added, “2020 will be an exciting year; with a busy wedding season ahead, new staff training to enhance our skills further and some amazing educational courses on offer.” When it comes to weddings, savvy brides know to place their trust in experienced makeup artists. Uniquely You Liz Andrews Photography Dare to be different, that’s the Liz Andrews Photography difference. Bold, brave and beautiful; this style has brides booking years in advance for Liz to capture a lifelong memory which is uniquely you. Liz’s process starts with communication above and beyond the norm. After booking her for your big day, Liz will meet with you in person, to discuss your vision and the finer details which make your day memorable for you. The consultation goes in-depth to include things which are personal to you; hobbies, passions, where you fell in love, what you like to do together and other things you have in common as a couple. “This brings out what is really important to a couple beyond their wedding day. I see a spark of excitement when they talk about it. I want to replicate that sparkle into their wedding photos. This usually inspires something unique and personal, so their wedding photos are unlike any others I’ve done. Unique, memorable. That’s the experience couples want,” Liz commented. The weddings which at the forefront of her memory are ones where couples are bold enough to take their passions to the next level.

the wedding party like to have some fun are the photo shoots which often out the best,” Liz added. “The most spectacular scenery can come from where you least expect it. I find beauty in an old country shed, a fallen tree trunk, an old door or a rustic wall. Best of all, a place which has an emotional attachment to the couple really brings out the beauty in both of them. “When it comes to lighting, we all love a cloudy day or a good sunset. That makes our job easy; however I enjoy shooting in low light and the evening also, as it creates a different mood and can draw out powerful emotion from the scene. I find a lot of my favourite images are created from challenging situations.” Liz is also known for her advanced editing skills. This allows her to ensure the best features from the day are displayed, with added touches to make moments look as special as they felt. “It can be subtle efforts that make people feel more comfortable; Uncle John has a lovely smile, cousin Charlie looks a little thinner, baby Laura has a clean nose. Little touch-ups to bring out the best in everyone. Also if a couple has a particular request, such as a photo of them under the Milky Way or additional white doves flying out of a basket; it’s those touches which make my clients very happy.” LIZ’S WEDDING DAY TIP Leave the sunglasses at home for the day. Let your eyes adjust to the brightness so that you’re not squinting during the big moments, especially for an outdoor ceremony.

“I photographed a Game of Thrones style wedding where the bride, groom and even the celebrant wore beautiful and elaborate costumes. From simple things like shooting at a Subway where a couple met, to a golf driving range because the groom and groomsmen were avid golfers; the ones where

Some of our recent events included Bond, Greatest Showman, Under the Water and of course, the obligatory Pirate. You’re not a true local unless you can pull a pirate party together,” Kellie laughed. You can book a Teepee complete with a styling package, or one without the other. Styling can be booked for ceremonies, receptions, parties and corporate events. Invest in full styling services to let TeepeEvents take care of the setup and dismantle, or if you have your heart set on DIY, book a visit to Kellie’s showroom for inspiration and hire everything you need to do-it-yourself. From the smallest embellishment to furniture and equipment; TeepeEvents and Styling certainly is a treasure trove of wedding and event solutions. Visit teepeeventswhitsunday.com for more information on their services and for a gallery of inspirational style. “The word people resonate with is individuality. People just want to do something that’s a little bit different from everyone else. We love this as it really gets our creative minds buzzing. Luxe Tropical is a continuing theme; big tropical leaves, greens, gold and pink; perfect for the Whitsundays. Micro weddings are gaining in popularity, where people are celebrating with a smaller more intimate circle, which gives them the ability to go big on style and added extras.” www.corelife.com.au 23

Peach and Pear Events Catering Sweet, and sometimes a little bit fruity, the ladies behind Peach and Pear Catering deliver pure delight when it comes to creative culinary spreads. Using fresh local flavour crafted with adventurous style; their creative spirits align to artfully serve beautiful boards of food with bold flavour and crave-worthy cuisine. It’s the boutique catering business with the huge reputation, but despite its popularity, it’s never lost sight of its beginning; serving food through friendship, lovingly prepared as though Gabi herself was preparing a spread for her nearest and dearest. Now, she has a helping hand. Meriya-leigh Robertson joined the Peach and Pear team last year, taking on the role of accounts and administration officer. Her love of food and creativity has made her a natural asset to the peachy-keen team; as her and Gabi bounce ideas off one-another to take platters of perfection to the next level. PEACH AND PEAR WEDDINGS Gourmet grazing tables, street-eat food stations, delectable dessert spreads and picnic platters; the options to nibble are never-ending. The popular grazing table trend is here to stay, with it being the ultimate way to feed family and friends. Choose from Peach and Pear’s grazing tables or grazing boards which include a mixture of cheese, antipasto, nuts, fruits, breads and dips. Beautifully presented, the platters are the perfect option for your Whitehaven Beach elopement, photography tour or bridal party preparations at your resort. Choose from a standard cheese and fruit platter or upgrade to a gourmet romantic package that includes a mix of cheese, antipasto, nuts, fruits, breads and dips. Where Peach and Pear also shines are in pre- and postwedding celebrations. Hen’s wine and cheese pairing evenings, bucks food stations with hearty bites for the boys, beach picnic platters for an escape to Whitehaven and grazing tables for the family get-together. DID YOU KNOW? Peach and Pear can also take some of the stress away from your big day. Having your own Day of Wedding Coordinator adds a professional touch to your reception, providing someone on hand to ensure everything is just so. From showing your beloved grandparents to their seats, to coordinating with caterers, ensuring people are seated before the wedding party’s arrival and testing the microphone before speeches commence; those touches of finesse are what can elevate a reception from great to incredible. This is part of Gabi’s larger wedding service vision, Destination Whitsundays, which is designed to promote the Whitsundays as the ultimate ‘destination wedding’ location.

“Our aim is to encourage visitors to the area, targeting couples wanting to marry here, elopements, couples wanting an elaborate way to renew their vows or ultimate hens and buck celebrations. This is advantageous to every business in the Whitsundays; whether you are directly involved in the wedding industry or not. If you are an accommodation provider, a retailer, a restaurant, a babysitter or a hairdresser; the flow-on effect of bringing more weddings to the Whitsundays benefits the larger community,” Gabi said. Gabi and her team will be travelling to various wedding expos in Queensland, showcasing both the Whitsundays and a large selection of wedding industry suppliers. Her hope is to then take it nationwide to attract couples from throughout Australia. “For a flat fee of only $50, we put together a brochure including pictures and contact details for all involved. This also pays for the printing, distribution and any exhibitions, at the same time directly promoting the region and yourself as a participating supplier. Our aim is to comprise a large list of all types of suppliers to keep in our Events Database Vault,” Gabi added. Get to Know: Gabi and Meriya Meriya is a long-term local, a foodie and fitness fanatic. She loves tropical walks with her son, Ryder, and you’ll see her often at the gym. Her favourite wedding cake flavour is chocolate mud cake and she is not a fan at all of coriander – the thought alone makes her queasy! What is a Peach and Pear option you recommend for events? “Build your own Bruschetta has been a favourite. The elegant and classic set up creates the ultimate ambience of luxury. I also love our antipasto grazing boards, the variety and flavour is incredible.” Gabi is the founder of Peach and Pear and lives on a rural property with husband, Mick. They had a casual ceremony in their backyard three years ago, after being together for 13 years, with a handful of friends to celebrate. “Our neighbour and good friend decided to video tape but we didn’t realise that we had left the clothes dryer on, the cat and next door’s dog were fighting, Mick’s mobile phone was ringing and we had left Paradise by the Dashboard Light playing in the background. So, I guess that has now become our wedding song.” DID YOU KNOW? As an extra special indulgent treat, Peach and Pear can giftpack and deliver chocolate covered strawberries. A perfect treat for the bride and groom, awaiting their arrival at their honeymoon suite as their first night of being husband and wife. www.corelife.com.au 25

location,

location,

location. Huzzah; you’re on your way to having one of the best days of your life! There aren’t many moments when you get to gather your nearest and dearest, put on an epic party and dance the night away; all in honour of the fact you’ve dedicate yourself to the most amazing love you’ve ever known. A celebration of this love is often the grandest occasion of our lives. An elegant elopement, a backyard barbecue or an opulent extravaganza; we all differ in the way we wish to express our love with those nearest and dearest to us. It all starts with a proposal, but once the ring is on your finger, what’s next? It’s time to delve into your dreams. A discussion with your fiancée where you discover each other’s wish-lists and must-haves. Based on the type of wedding you would both like, the sensible next move is to discuss a timeline which suits both your theme and budget. Don’t automatically assume some of your fairytale fantasies are out of reach just yet, often your dream wedding can be more affordable than you realise. It just takes research,

planning and guidance from industry experts. Choosing your wedding venue will be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as an engaged couple. The venue you pick will determine the number of guests you can invite, the location of your wedding, and theme and styling options. With world-famous Whitehaven Beach, luxury island resorts, lush rainforest and Heart Reef; Mackay and the Whitsundays provides a plethora of romantic possibilities, perfect for an intimate elopement, a casual beach celebration or a luxurious grand affair. A picturesque waterfront location coupled with comprehensive event planning facilities and a dedicated function team. Sounds like a dream, but if you’re planning on having hundreds of guests, you’ll want to consider a large, professional venue with experienced staff and the capacity to comfortably cater for everyone. On the other end of the spectrum, a small and

intimate location will suit better if you’re planning on inviting a handful of your nearest and dearest. Whether you choose a restaurant with a view, a grassy lawn overlooking the ocean or an elopement to a pontoon on the Great Barrier Reef; your backdrop options increase when there are less guests to cater for. All-in-ones are popular with those who have family travelling from afar; where you can have your ceremony and reception at the same location with on-site accommodation adding to the convenient package. Of course; remote outback and rural weddings ooze charm and charisma; made more possible with transportable marquee and teepee options allowing you to transform any open area into an arena to delight your guests. Once you know what best suits you as a couple, you can then start writing your guest list and begin searching for the ultimate place to say, “I Do.”

Thinking About a

Pre-Nup?

Get Advice From The Experts At PD Law

“WE WANT PRE-NUP! WE WANT PRE-NUP!” Ahh yes…Kanye’s sage words. Sadly, the stats are pretty brutal. Divorce happens. Whether you’re inclined to broach the subject is entirely your business, but if you’re thinking about it, read on. WHAT ARE THEY? Pre-nups, actually called Financial Agreements in Australia, are agreements where you both agree on how to split your assets and financial resources if your relationship breaks down. They can be done: • before you get married; • while you’re married; • after you’re divorced. SO ARE THEY WORTH THE PAPER THEY’RE WRITTEN ON? Sorry to sound like lawyers, but it depends. There have been few areas of law more controversial than the Financial Agreements provisions of the Family Law Act since their arrival almost 20 years ago. Bottom line? They have a place, but not always, and they can become redundant quickly. It makes sense then that if you want to sign one, you need to know what you’re getting, and have

your expectations set. Both need to take advice, using independent family lawyers, and it’s drafted according to the law if it’s the best option and best way forward. Primarily, the playing field needs to be dead level. If one party is in a weaker bargaining position, or if the agreement is the ‘price’ for marriage, or if things are just plain one-sided, it’s absolutely not worth the paper it’s written on, and our advice is don’t waste your money on lawyers. Buy more fireworks for the big night instead. THINGS CHANGE - THEY ALWAYS DO. If things change, the agreement needs to be reviewed. Regardless of people’s best intentions to review them, they rarely do. Agreements either end up being practically useless to the financially weaker party to get out of if there is a later hardship because they can’t afford to enforce it, or, if say children are involved, the documents need to be constantly reviewed and redrafted (read costly) due to continually changing circumstances to avoid the risk of it being tossed out – in this case the financially stronger party thinks the agreement is binding only to find out that it’s not due to these changed circumstances.

assets for their children from prior marriages, from future claims by the new spouse. WHEN IS IT NOT?

WHEN IS IT APPROPRIATE TO SIGN ONE?

Where people are looking for guarantees that it will hold up, or where kids haven’t arrived yet, where it requires constant, costly review to avoid being unenforceable, where one holds the power, or where it’s rushed. This is not the end of the list, but it gives you an idea of the potential for problems.

When it makes sense to both parties, it’s the best option, they’re committed to not just ‘set and forget’, and it’s likely to be enforceable - such as when one or both parties want to preserve existing

WHAT’S YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTION? As we begin a brand-new decade many of us will be thinking about our health, lifestyle, family, relationships and financial security. Many will join a gym or start a new diet, however not many of us will consider our financial fitness.

Where do you want to be financially at the end of 2020? You will need to have a goal. It might be as simple as saving money for a car or a holiday or just paying off a loan. Or it could be much more significant like buying your first home or investment property or that you wish to get a better interest rate on your existing mortgage. The best place to start is to have a living budget and the best time to start a budget is at the beginning of a new year. A living budget can be amended during the year if your situation changes. A budget will highlight how much you spend on food, clothing, electricity, phones, entertainment, holidays, fuel, insurance, registrations, rent and loan repayments and will also show how much you have saved. I also recommend that you complete a list of all your assets and liabilities every year. If you take away the liabilities from your total assets you will then know your Net Asset position or wealth. Doing this once a year allows you to compare your position from a year ago and will show if your wealth is growing.

Here are some Financial Goals to consider for 2020: • Create your living budget and review how you spend your money. • Consolidate your credit cards / store cards / unsecured loans to a lower interest rate; • Start up a savings plan and save for a home loan deposit, holiday or a new toy; • Consider if the rent that you pay would be better placed towards a home loan repayment; • Review you home loan interest rate and fees. Is there a better deal to save you money? • Review your income and salary packaging options. If you are not sure where to start, then talk to your Financial Advisor or Better Money Lenders. TOURISM WHITSUNDAYS NOTE FROM CEO TASH WHEELER The Whitsundays recently hosted the final Australian stopover of the 2019-20 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race. Events were staged across the Whitsunday region following the Clipper Race arrivals at the start of January. A few key events during the Carnival was the iconic White on Whitehaven by Fish D’vine as well as the free community welcome event which took place at the new Airlie Beach foreshore providing an opportunity for the local community to show the warm Whitsundays hospitality the region is known for. The 18th of January will be action galore as the Rodeo By The Reef takes place at the Bowen foreshore. The much- anticipated official opening of the Whitsundays Visitor Information Centre will take place on the 13th of February. The new home for the information centre will be just off the Bruce Highway next to Whitsunday Gold Coffee Plantation. The new Whitsundays Visitor Information Centre once opened, will work closely with the existing Bowen and Mackay Visitor Information Centres to encourage visitor dispersal and increased length of stay through all areas. The centres plan to develop a unique produce trail which will encourage visitors to explore more of what these areas have to offer. For information on how to volunteer or have your products displayed please contact the Tourism Whitsundays team. In reviewing the visitation figures for the first half of the calendar year, it was apparent the tourism industry in the Whitsundays suffered significant economic impact with a direct and indirect loss between $80-$150m. So far for the second half of the year, many areas in tourism have picked up, our focus is now on the first six months of 2020 and looking at how we can help to drive a better outcome for our industry. Tourism Whitsundays will be undertaking several marketing and PR initiatives to bolster tourism to the Whitsundays with the aim to prevent any further downturn in visitation. The key initiative the team is working towards that I would like to highlight is the destination brand campaign which we plan will go live at the end of January. This campaign is over $600,000 investment thanks to the partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and our Tourism Whitsundays members who have invested. This campaign will target primarily Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne but will also have some weighting in the regional drive market. The plan for the campaign is to drive travel bookings and interest in the Whitsundays between February and June 2020. We’ve had upgrades, revitalizations, refurbishments, redevelopments, and Great Barrier Reef firsts! 2019 was the comeback year for The Whitsunday region, in 2020 we plan to continue to build on the awareness and buzz that surrounded the area last year.

Mining & Industry In Focus

Looking for a job in mining? TRYING TO GET A JOB IN THE MINING INDUSTRY CAN BE A LITTLE LIKE MINING ITSELF. YOU KNOW THERE IS GREAT REWARD TO BE FOUND UNDER THE SURFACE BUT A LOT OF OBSTACLES STAND IN YOUR WAY. BREAKING THE SOIL, OR TAKING THAT FIRST STEP IS THE HARDEST. BUT THE MORE YOU PERSEVERE, THE FURTHER YOU DIG, EVENTUALLY YOU’LL STRIKE GOLD. OR IN THIS CASE, COAL.

Create a good C.V Don’t underestimate the power of a good C.V. Imagine your application sitting on a desk among 100 others. What will make yours stand out? It’s important to have your strengths, experience and skills clearly listed, as a potential employer or its agency doesn’t have time to read between the lines. Also, ensure you have great references.

Talk to someone already working in the mines Money may be your main motivation, but do you know what it’s really like to work long, physically-demanding days at a hot, remote, dusty location? Not everyone has what it takes and many people realise it’s not where they want to be. Talk with someone in the industry to get the inside word on what it’s really like before you spend money on up-skilling.

Security, medical and drug tests You will need to pass a lot of tests to even set foot onto a mine site, so have a think about whether these are achievable before you have your heart set on a job in a mine. Most mine sites will require you to have a NPC (National Police Clearance) which you can apply for online. A pre-employment medical will also be asked for. Most medical clinics can provide mining-particular medicals, if you can get one of these prior to your application, it is another advantageous step as the employer will know you are fit and healthy. You will need photo ID to give to the medical clinic for your pre-employment medical. You will also be required to pass drug and alcohol screening before you are allowed on site. If you are lucky enough to be considered for a role, don’t celebrate the night before you’re due on site, as most mine sites have a zero tolerance.

Register with as many agencies as possible Not all entry-level positions are advertised and most are at the discretion of the mine. Your chances are greatly increased if you register your interest across as many employment agencies as possible, especially those with big mining clients. Only apply for jobs which are within your skillset.

Up-skill or get some experience Have you considered working in civil construction or transport to get some of the tickets you need for mining? You will become a more attractive applicant for mining jobs if you already possess some of the tickets commonly required. Front-end loader, heavy-rigid, forklift; these are all advantages. You could obtain these privately but you will need to pay for them. For entry level Mobile Equipment Operator positions (truck, road train, dump truck etc) a HR-X license is usually a good start as this is a basic requirement of any operator position.

Our best advice on getting a start in mining is to contact the mining companies directly, as each company has their own procedures and recruitment requirements for any entry level roles that do become available.

SIMON ROSS MINESPEC PARTS Blink when you’re passing through Nebo on the Peak Downs Highway and you might miss it, but the unassuming character of Minespec Parts is exactly what has made it a juggernaut in heavy industry. From a dusty yard in this tiny rural Queensland town, a metaphorical Phoenix rose from the ashes to provide struggling resource businesses the opportunity to generate secondary streams of income from unused and unwanted bits of machinery. Providing alternative sources of income, as well as cost-effective hire alternatives during challenging economic conditions, enabled a lot of businesses in the resource sector to stay in business, thanks to the ingenuity of Director, Simon Ross. His initiative of ‘turn your surplus into purpose’ has attracted a growing global market, so now Simon has turned his attention to how he can use his own surplus, toward a greater purpose. You may think that mining and the Miss Universe Australia pageant would be worlds apart, but with Simon as a vocal advocate for gender diversity in the workplace, he’s putting his money where his mouth is and showing Australia that beauty and business go handin-hand. Simon explains, it started with a fateful invitation from a friend to attend the Miss Universe Queensland final three years ago. “It opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, but one which has remarkable similarities. These girls strive for perfection and work hard to deliver a presentation of strength and empowerment. After meeting with key people, it took six months to get the attention of Miss Universe Directors, Troy and Sophia Barbagallo, to develop an initiative for Minespec Parts to help further shape the structure of Miss Universe in Australia. “My idea was to gift a grant to the value of $10,000 for the winner to use as a business kick-start or education grant to further her studies. The initiative proved very popular and in the past three years, the number of women applying for opportunity to be crowned Miss Universe Australia more than tripled. Last year, we doubled our investment by upping

the business and education grant to $20,000. I offer mentoring where I can to help ladies who have a passion for starting their own business venture,” Simon said. Not one to miss a business opportunity, Simon became a financial investor in Australian swimwear brand, BondiBorn. Founded by well-known businesswoman, Dale McCarthy, the luxury brand is made in Australia with no compromise on quality. The brand rapidly attracted attention overseas and has been spotted on the Instagram pages of Miranda Kerr, Nicole Trunfio and superstar, Beyoncé. Part of Simon’s investment in both BondiBorn and Miss Universe Australia was to affiliate one brand with the other, a smart business decision which has seen the innovative designer swimwear modeled on the contestants. Simon also provided an opportunity for one of the 2018 Miss Universe Australia finalists to become an ambassador for Minespec Parts. This was awarded to Jasmine Stringer. Her role allows her to be a voice for gender balanced workforces while promoting the mining industry on a global scale. “Two years ago, around a quarter of the most successful startups were founded by women. We’re aiming to increase this figure. Diversity is the answer to long term success, not just within the mining sector, but all workforces. Jasmine is an absolute legend and has helped no end in cementing the partnership between Minespec Parts and Miss Universe Australia,” he added. As a single father, Simon’s ambition for gender equality and business opportunities for women stems from the love of his daughter, Maddison. “She may be 10, but in my eyes, she’s 10-going-on-18. I want her to see the world for the possibilities it can provide, that anything is achievable if you work hard for it.” Simon’s two children, Maddison (10) and Cooper (7), are already part-owners of Minespec Parts. “They aren’t just a part of the business, they are the reason for the business. I had them

written straight in, there’s no waiting until they grow up. I wanted to ensure that the business I worked hard to create was already theirs. I know it’s a different way of doing things, but at the end of the day, we all do it for our kids,” he said. Maddison and Cooper both attend St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School in Rural View. Maddison enjoys horse riding and attends events and shows across the region, while Cooper loves soccer and played for Dolphins Blues last year. On a recent trip to Fiji, Simon spent time taking them to rural villages, so they could see that not everyone in the world is as fortunate as many kids growing up in Australia. As a self-confessed workaholic, Simon admits that the struggle is in the juggle, but he works on being the best father he can despite his business obligations taking a significant amount of time. “Life’s all about having fun and living in the moment. Yes, I need to work hard, but I’m prioritizing more time for my family. All we have is time, I’m a believer of do it once, do it right. Live like there is no afterlife, get it done in this life,” he said. Minespec Parts is showing no signs of slowing down, with its overseas exports experiencing significant growth as well as local demand. “Because we deal in big machinery, from 80 to 800 tonne, nothing happens overnight. It’s large gear and it takes a large logistical network to move it from one place to another, plus the time to strip it and refurbish the parts. We’re moving it out as quickly as it’s arriving in. There’s a big demand for what we do as more businesses realise there’s a cost-effective alternative to sourcing quality parts for machinery.” While Simon’s one of the most humble and down-to-earth guys you’ll meet, there’s no denying he’s taken nothing but oily rags and turned them into a business rich in its generosity toward the local community. Simon’s story is one of true Aussie grit, ingenuity and the vision to turn idle surplus into purpose.

Ochre Australia At The Forefront Of Indigenous Labour Services Generational unemployment in rural communities is a real problem when opportunities for success are few and far between, particularly in indigenous groups. Closing the gap through providing training, mentorship and employment opportunities is the aim of local business, Ochre Australia. “It’s incredibly humbling and rewarding to see someone’s life improve by being given an opportunity to work to provide for their family;” Ochre Australia director, Kerrod Toby said. Ochre Australia provides specialist labour hire, workforce services and equipment hire from pumps and lighting plants to heavy earthmoving equipment and everything in between. Where it is significantly different from other mining support businesses, is that it is a majority owned indigenous

58

company, with a high focus on assisting indigenous communities and achieving outcomes for the future of the regions and its people. Kerrod added, “We believe that our greatest potential can be achieved in a collaborative environment of common purpose and shared success. We value our team and strongly believe our diversity offers strength both to our business and our clients. Through this initiative we have the ability to improve the socio-economic growth in rural and regional communities; which is the greatest gift we can give back through our business.” Ochre Australia was forged by a friendship; between directors, Kerrod and Drew Callander. Kerrod is a from the Gangulu people who are traditional owners from

the Central Queensland area. Drew is a business owner of a successful maintenance contracting company in Mackay. One day over a beer, Kerrod mentioned to Drew that he would like the opportunity to give back to his people. His vision was to start a company which trained indigenous people, to provide employment opportunities through upskilling. This would improve the economic situation of many of the families in rural communities. Drew saw the potential, and after a few more conversations between the friends, the planning commenced for what would soon be a viable business in operation. Ochre Australia now trains and hires trades personnel, operators, administration staff, supervisors, servicepersons and storepeople, to name a few. The business has the ability

growth of long-term working relationships that are mutually beneficial to all. We believe in giving back to the communities that support us by supporting them through sponsorships, charitable donations and community involvement,” Drew said.

While the focus is on indigenous employment, the workforce is fully inclusive and offers opportunities for a large cross section of the community. By engaging a highly experienced team with expertise in a cross section of areas including recruitment, training, project and operations management, Ochre can assist competently and successfully with any requirement or project.

A carpenter by trade, he worked in the construction industry for 12 years before moving to mining as a plant operator where he’s worked for more than a decade. His knowledge across both industries is an asset in assisting others to become skilled in these fields.

Training and career development is a priority of Ochre Australia, via training through recognised traineeships and apprenticeships with job secure positions available for the future.

Kerrod’s opportunities came early on as a talented teenager on the footy field. He followed his love of rugby league to Rockhampton where he played for the Fitzroy Sharks. He played in an exhibition match in Rockhampton as a curtain raiser for the London Broncos, where his talent was recognised and he was offered a contract. It was a contrasting change for Kerrod, from the hot rural town of Mount Morgan to the cold, crazy city of

Drew is a Mackay local, who enjoyed a rural upbringing on a cattle property. He became a fully qualified diesel fitter in 1999 and worked in his trade in the mines for a number of years. He started his own maintenance support business in 2004 and the company went from strength to strength to become a leader in the maintenance sector. His trade and business experience have been crucial in the setup and growth of Ochre Australia. “We are optimistic about the prospects of an inclusive workforce with partnerships with the community and clients alike to see the

Due to business growth and demand, Ochre Australia are looking for more people to join their team. Drew added, “We are seeking any indigenous and non-indigenous trades people and plant operators to join our team. We are also seeking people who are interested in being trained in various roles to register their interest with us. 2020 will be a big year for Ochre and there are a number of opportunities with us to gain long term employment.” To register your interest, email admin@ochreaus.com.au or call 07 4863 4760. The freedom of complete customisation JORSON TECHNOLOGIES

W

hat started as a way to save significant costs on components has now launched into one of the Whitsunday’s most creative and versatile new businesses. Jorson Technologies offers 3D printing services; providing functional designs, prototypes, visual aids and full assembly models which can be created in a matter of a few hours depending on the scale of the project. HOW DOES 3D PRINTING WORK AND WHY IS IT A COST-EFFECTIVE OPTION? 3D printing is the process of building an item layer by layer, using an array of different plastics to create a final 3-dimensional object. One of its greatest advantages is that it can easily create custom objects which are not readily available to buy. In a normal machining process, a single item is costly to produce. With 3D printing, a single item costs no more than if multiples were being created, due to no tooling being required in production. It can also be a very time-efficient solution. High resolution finishes and strong engineering plastics allow for final functional components to be made in mere hours after a CAD design is complete. Traditionally, a production line can be halted for days while waiting for a critical component to be shipped. Now it can be made in a fraction of the time. Jordan Jenner is co-owner of Jorson Technologies Pty. Ltd and also the Mechanical and Development Engineer. After growing up in Hervey Bay, Jordan enrolled at QUT to study a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with advanced knowledge in fluid dynamics and computational analysis. His experience comes from research and development with hydro turbines and optimising electric motor designs. He and his employer came up with a way of reducing costs associated with one-off machining for prototype components. “We were introduced to 3D printing and came to buy a first machine that met so many of our requirements and saved us thousands. Along the process of developing prototype components, we have slowly purchased machinery to achieve our design solutions in house. My background in mechanical engineering and prior experience with CAD and CAM software made the process

very cost-effective for our business. My previous employer and I are now co-owners of Jorson Technologies so we can continue to improve on this technology and offer cost-saving solutions to a wide variety of industries,” Jordan said.

The G code is uploaded to the CNC mill and the object is created automatically which allows for extreme precision and repeatability. The machine can produce objects out of anything from plastics through to high strength tool steel,” Jordan said.

Jorson Technologies has a diverse range of services, simulation and computer-aided design available.

He added, “Our computer controller router or profile cutter (CNC), allows us to cut sheets of raw material into any desired profile, it can cut plastics through to aluminium 6021 and can fit up to 120mm thick materials. The diversity of the CNC router allows us to convert into a 5 axis CNC machine that can cut the same materials. Our 3D plastic printer is an Air Wolf Axiom DualDirect Drive; and can achieve a diverse range of production requirements.”

COMPUTER SIMULATION Performance simulations allow the testing of a product’s performance without the actual cost of producing the item. This allows for alterations during the design phase before an item is made. It produces a true-to-life 3D view so you can clearly see the object before it’s made. Stress and buckling analysis determines stress concentration when load is applied to determine the critical failure point to ensure it is strong enough for the task required. Assembly simulations in 3D make a complex assembly process easier to follow and understand in comparison to 2D drawings. Visual walkthroughs can transform 2D sketches or blueprints into a point-of-view animation. This is great for designing your own home as you can see with your own eyes how spaces look in advance. This service is also perfect for people or businesses who are entering into a funding pitch. It’s easier to sell your vision when someone else can see it for themselves. An incredible advantage Jorson Technologies brings the Whitsundays is Flow simulation. There are less than 10 licenses for flow simulation in Australia and Jorson Technologies has been awarded one of them. Jordan explains, “Flow simulation allows us to design any system that uses fluid; from optimising air conditioning, piping and irrigation, plant design, boat design, to wind and fluid turbines and impellers, flood mapping, heating and ventilation. It is an incredibly strong and powerful program, with excellent practical results.” The technology already acquired by Jorson Technologies is impressive, with more to come later this year. “The Precision Syil X7 CNC Mill is a computer controlled vertical mill. You draw a component on a computer using software and convert it into a file that the mill can read, which tells it where to cut and how fast to do it; this is called a G code.

This year Jorson Technologies is awaiting the arrival of a large industrial 3D printer which will give it the ability to build larger items. It’s currently used by aerospace companies due to its absolute precision and strength of the final product. “Ultimately, we want to cater for all; but at the moment we have the ability to make parts which are tiny and precise for hobbyists through to making small machine components for industries such as mining. The opportunities are really endless when it comes to what we can make with 3D printing. Our computer simulation allows us to provide visions for a wide range of industry, from architects and builders to trades and marine. Our CNC milling meets industry standards. “3D printing is great in the marine industry as some of the plastics we offer have high strength and rigidity as well as offering UV resistance as well as rust and corrosion proofing due to the components being plastic. They can be sanded, painted, polished and machined. There are also flexible yet strong and watertight materials, TPU, and great modelling materials for items that don’t need strength but need a good finish. Custom components like 3D business logos or decorations, irrigation fittings, custom switch panels; if you can envision it, we can design and build it,” Jordan said. Ultimately, the services offered by Jorson Technologies can equate to faster production time, cost effective solutions, creativeness and customisation freedom. The inland community that’s more than coal While mining is undoubtedly a strong economic driver for our Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions as a whole, businesses who have thrived and survived the boom and bust nature of the industry understand that you can’t rely solely on coal alone to succeed. Director of Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical (MDTM), Carolyn Fritz, has seen her fair share of economic highs and lows. The key to the success of her business, which is one of the largest privately-owned employers in the Isaac, was through establishing a stable economic platform with a vision to support and grow the local community. “Diversification is essential to successful economic development. Instead of looking at the downturn as a negative, we used the opportunity to adjust our business model. We acknowledge that it was the mining industry which build Moranbah up from nothing, so we will always provide a service to that industry, but we don’t solely rely on it. We looked into ways of supporting the locals to provide them with what they need, so they could shop local. “We were Australia’s first authorised Repco service centre to be authorised as a Repco stockist for spare parts, and are the only distributor for Ironman 4x4 products in the Bowen Basin and Central Highlands. We know our locals love the outdoor lifestyle; camping, fishing and 4WD trips; they know they can get the best mechanical products and service right here in Moranbah,” Carolyn said.

an independent regional economic development body to represent and advocate for the collective Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region. It’s no surprise that she won the 2019 Inspiring Woman in Isaac award, recognising her contribution toward making a positive difference to the local community. She commented, “Local employment allows families to live, work and spend in the local region. Innovation is key to ensure that development remains focused on future needs of the local community. When we all actively contribute to make the community better for everyone, great things happen.” Carolyn knows that the strength of her business is determined by the strength of her team, in particular, the support she receives from her husband, Jamie. “Hard work, dedication and support is what has given our business strength. I’m able to achieve what I have because of Jamie, who puts in 100 per cent every day to ensure we continue to treat people the way we want to be treated. Our team is like family, they are very important to us, we simply couldn’t do it without them.” Head to tyres-mechanical.com.au to catch up on the latest from MDTM; keeping Moranbah and the mines moving.

Another area of diversification for MDTM is becoming a hire agency for Orix Rentals. This division provides mine site compliant vehicles for organisations who require a vehicle to access mine sites. Her vision has always been to support and build the local community. Her business supports her employees by providing housing in Moranbah, so they can live locally and become a part of the community. Instead of drive-in drive-out, they bring their family to the outback for a lifestyle experience you just can’t get in the city. This was recognised when MDTM won the Connecting in the Community award at the Resource Industry Network awards in 2018. The award is given to the organisation that best demonstrates how they successfully engaged with the community. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical didn’t stop there. WHITSUNDAY SPORTSPARK CREATING A COMMUNITY SPORTING HUB

As a kid, what did Saturday morning mean for you? For the majority of Australian households, it meant frantically finding a footy boot, spot-cleaning last week’s uniform that forgot to be washed and scrambling to pack everyone into the car to make it to the game on time. Sport is synonymous with the Australian culture. It’s the very fabric of our society and as a nation, we champion our talented heroes who triumph on the world stage. Yet, without the appropriate infrastructure and facilities at grassroots level to support sport and physical activities, many of the associated opportunities for sporting achievement would be left unaccomplished. And those who do have the opportunity to partake in their chosen sport will attest that community sport infrastructure can be much more than just a place to play sport, it’s a place for the community to gather, to rally behind each other and to socialise under a common bond. In Airlie Beach and the greater Whitsunday region, understandably tourism is a huge driving force behind the economy. But what can be forgotten, is that while everyone works toward building Airlie as a party

town, there is a community of families in the background who live here every day. A community who would like their children to be able to grow up with those same Saturday morning ambitions as other kids throughout Australia, without necessarily having to drive a couple of hours to Mackay to achieve it. The Whitsunday Sportspark is about giving the community a state-of-the-art sporting hub to train, play and watch top-level sporting action; with the bonus of a familyfriendly bar and bistro where profits are injected back into the community. At the head of this charge, is Justin Butler, president of the Whitsunday Sportspark, who has had an interest in local sporting committees since the 1990’s and has a strong sporting presence locally with his family. “I have been on the touch footy committee for 20 years and play with my son Tate. I kicked off junior touch six years ago which my daughter Noelle now plays and I coach junior touch. I also coach junior rugby union which Tate plays and hope to get back to playing soccer over the next year or two as

my son moves into seniors. Tate previously played AFL and Noelle is keen to try Netball in 2020 and will hopefully inspire her sister Sabine along,” Justin commented. He first joined the Whitsunday Sportspark committee in 2006 as treasurer, but had to step down in 2008 as the Global Financial Crisis put the financial world into a tailspin. As the founder and director of Eclipse Financial Services, the GFC hit his business especially hard and he had to direct all of his time toward supporting his clients through the crisis. He went back to the executive committee in 2014 as secretary, by this stage he now had three young children and his focus went toward junior sport. “As a committee, we realised that the current one oval and one field just couldn’t handle the level of use from all the different sports. The growth of junior sport in Airlie had virtually stopped. This is what sparked the catalyst for changing the layout of the bottom section to add in another field. “We met with Council and they commissioned a thorough report into sporting field requirements across the Shire.

This showed that with our strong population growth, Airlie needs a large sporting complex out in Cannonvalley to serve the future needs. Council agreed that adding an extra field onto the current Sportspark was a good first step and would ‘bridge the gap’ for several years until the large facility is developed,” Justin commented. The idea for the licensed club and bistro came from enjoying a beer at the grounds watching footy one Saturday morning. “I remarked to the bloke beside me, ‘how good would it be if we were drinking schooners instead of bringing our own cans.’ Growing up in Bundaberg, I’d seen the huge impact that successful community clubs had on local sporting infrastructure and community groups in general. There’s no reason why we couldn’t establish a multi-use venue here in Airlie where the profits go back into the community, whilst encouraging more of the community to get engaged with a local sporting club,” he added. Thanks to the work of Justin, the Whitsunday Sportspark committee and countless other volunteers, this vision is taking shape. Stage one of eight has been completed, with the bottom field realigned, the addition of the second field with first-class playing surfaces, state-level lighting and a new canteen. In February, the tender will be awarded for stages two and three. Stage two will see the completion of the modern changerooms

and public toilet facilities with an estimated completion date of May, then stage three is the construction of the club, bar and bistro; with gaming room, dining areas, terraces and a grandstand. Hopefully this stage will be completed by the end of 2020.

Post Council elections in March, we will be calling on Council to extend this loan facility for a further two years to help with fitting out the kitchen, bar and club; and providing operating capital to get the facility up and running,” Justin said.

Justin added, “Further stages after that, subject to funding, revolve around renovating the top oval, building a new netball facility, moving the bowls green and club up beside the new club and then developing the bowls and fire station block with indoor sport facilities and an aquatic centre.”

Justin understands that attracting grants and building the facility is only half the battle. For the venture to be a true success for the community, they need the right team to manage the club in a competitive hospitality market.

Through his local business, Eclipse Financial Services, Justin has invested greatly into the Whitsunday Sportspark, both with financial contributions as well as countless hours of time to attract local, state and federal funding. “I’ve been averaging about 15 to 20 hours per week into this project for the last four years. There are times when it can take 30 hours out of a week and I’m fortunate to have the support of my wife Susan, our kids and my team at Eclipse Financial Services to facilitate me chasing this dream for the community. Grants of $8.35m have been awarded to facilitate this project so far, and on top of their $750,000 seed capital that got it all started, the Whitsunday Shire Council have provided a loan of $1m for 12 months to provide working capital for the construction.

“We have the right mix of Directors on the Sportspark committee to employ the right people to provide a top-quality hospitality experience, this is essential to be successful. Ultimately, we need the support of the locals. All profits will go back into the community and not just the five sports (soccer, rugby union, touch footy, netball and AFL) that call the Sportspark home, but also other sporting and community clubs across the Whitsunday Shire. When people sign up as members of the club, they will nominate what Not for Profit clubs they support and this way we can use this info to decide how money is awarded to community organisations.” The Whitsunday Sportspark is set to become a major regional boutique sporting venue with the capability of attracting top-level sporting events. With community support, it won’t be long before the Reds, Roar, Suns, Firebirds and Cowboys will want to stay and play in the Whitsundays.

Back to School

Back to School Tips to prepare your child for school With the start of a new school year just around the corner, St Catherine’s Catholic College look forward to welcoming both new and existing students back for another wonderful year with a calendar full of activities across both their Primary and Secondary Campuses. Preparation for the school year ahead can start at home with simple ideas and conversations around the dining room table. Below are some top tips from College Guidance Counsellor Sarah Moss who said having these conversations with your child can help make the transition back to school a lot easier for the whole family. 1. Tech Talks Sitting down as a family and having a conversation about the rules for the year surrounding technology use at home is a smart move. It is important to set boundaries to help your child manage their screen time. Rules can be established regarding time limits, devices in bedrooms, device-free meal times, etc. Kids learn more from what we do than what we say. Have times when the devices are put away and you give full attention to the people around you. Use the Screen Time feature on iOS products to monitor just how you are using your technology

and whether you could be making some changes. And don’t forget, screen time doesn’t just have to be done alone, you can sit as a family and coview, co-play and co-engage with your children when they are using screens – it encourages social interactions, bonding, and learning. Playing a video game with your kids is a good way to demonstrate good sportsmanship and gaming etiquette. Watching a show with them can give you the opportunity to share your own life experiences and perspectives 2. Stress and Anxiety Dr. Sheryl Zeigers’ research on burnout in adults and children shows that there is a correlation between the level of stress that parents feel at work and the level of stress that their kids feel at school. It’s important we remind our child to work smarter not harder in the classroom in particular parents of daughters who often get into the habit of submitting extra work when it is not part of the criteria in the belief that quantity will be valued over quality. This, as we know, is not the case. Boys, however, seem to be better at trusting their skillset and knowledge and tend to fake it ‘till they make it more often than not, whereas girls can often feel they have to prove themselves. Ways to get around this is to engage with your child about their school workloads and assessments and what

the criteria are. Also going through your family schedule each term - school, sports, and social commitments and checking there is a balance of these events as well as regular fun and relaxing family time and rituals. 3. Health Checks Just as you prioritise annual dental visits, it is just as important to keep on top of vision and hearing checks every two years for your child. This can start as early as Kindy and can continue through to the secondary years. 4. Set up a designated study space in the home Now that your child has hit the big time it’s important that they have a study space to call their own. Keep this outside the bedroom if possible – the bedroom is a space for sleeping and relaxing. Use any area that is reasonably quiet and well lit. Set up a desk with a computer, if possible, along with stationery items. 5. Reasonable expectations It’s important for us as parents to remember to set reasonable expectations on our child/children not only academically, but also behaviour and attitude-wise. www.corelife.com.au 67

From disability to ‘dis ability

Born with bilateral permanent sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, Byron Wallace was fitted with his first pair of hearing aids at only six weeks old. But he has never let this sensory deprivation deprive him of sporting glory. The Sarina youngster is multi-talented in both footy and athletics. On the footy field, he doesn’t let his disability stand in the way of being a force to be reckoned with. He chooses to compete in the able-bodied competition and has made the Mackay and District side for the past three years. Last year he made the Capricornia team despite breaking his foot at the Cap trials. This led to him competing in the Cap Trials for athletics in a moon boot! On the athletics field, he is breaking national records, despite not being a member of an athletics club yet. The self-taught athlete picked up a shotput three years ago to practice for his school’s athletics carnival. He was a natural and quickly progressed to attending state and then national championships with the help of one of his teachers from school who offered advice on technique. To give you an idea of his natural talent, Byron placed first in the ablebodied division of shotput and discus in the Sarina, Mackay and Capricornia Districts competition. In August, he went to the school’s State Championships at QSAC in Brisbane where he broke two state records in his multi-class division, then threw a big personal best of 12.07 metres in shot put which placed him sixth in Queensland in the able-bodied class.

Byron trains for six days per week during footy season and heads to the athletic park in Sarina to train when he can. He’s hoping to get some coaching this year as his goal is to learn to throw the javelin. He has an older brother, Bailey (15) and younger brother, Beau (6) who keep him on his toes. The boys love to fish and ride motorbikes. With five records under his belt last year, two Australian records, two state records and a school record; Byron’s goal for this year is to catch the eye of a national selector to represent Australia.

WHITSUNDAY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE OUR TOWN - OUR COLLEGE 26 Paluma Road, Cannonvale | 07 4948 5100 | www.whitsunday.qld.edu.au

He backed up this great performance by beating two Australian multiclass records at the School Sports Australia Track and Field National Championships in Darwin earlier in September. He competes in the 10 – 12 year age group and won two golds as well as breaking the national records, with a throw of 11.83 in shotput and a huge personal best of 36.69 in discus. He ended the year by winning the multiclass athlete of the year award at the Mackay District School Sports Awards 2019. He was recognised as one of the top three overall athletes of the year in athletics and in the top ten athletes of the year across all sports. Byron is qualified for dual pathways which enables him to compete in both able-body and multi-class competitions. His multi-class category is F01, but his parents raised him to never look at his disability as anything that would hold him back from achievement. His mother, Shahara Wallace commented, “Byron is incredibly resilient and was the happiest baby. He’s kind-hearted and has a gentle nature, although he’s my gentle giant, at 12-years-old he’s taller than me and already in size 13 men’s shoes! His father, Will, and I have worked hard for Byron to not view his hearing loss as a disability. We teach him that life is what you make it and that anything’s possible when you put your mind to it.”

You’ve done everything you can think of to help to get ready for school, but have you thought about their oral health? Establishing positive habits during childhood is the basis for creating and maintaining good dental health all the way through adulthood. Make this new school year the year to instil good habits that will set your child up for ongoing oral health. 1. Brush Twice A Day and Floss Daily - It’s recommended to everyone to brush 2 minutes twice a day and floss daily. The earlier kids are in this routine, the more likely they are to keep it up. A great tip to keep them on track is to brush and floss with them so your child can see that it’s a normal, grown-up thing to do. Not only will it help to cement your child’s oral hygiene routine, they will keep you accountable for the heath of your teeth too. 2. Make Brushing and Flossing Fun - Daily brushing and flossing can be something to look forward to and it’s easy to brush for two minutes twice a day, every day when your toothbrush has a Disney Princess or Superman on it. Also, let them choose a two-minute song and make it a game to brush their teeth until it’s over. 3. Pack a healthy lunchbox - To develop strong teeth, your children need a healthy, balanced diet . Try packing your child’s lunchbox with snacks like veggies, fruits, nuts, minimal high-sugar foods such as biscuits and muesli bars, wholegrain bread, cheese, yogurts and fluoridated tap water. 4. Think ahead - By taking a few moments to give some thought to your child’s dental health now could save you stress, time and money in the future. • Instead of booking your child’s check-up and clean last minute, book it in well in advance for a time you know will be convenient. • Leave an extra toothbrush at your child’s best friend’s house for impromptu sleepovers & put your contact information on file at your child’s school in case of dental emergency 5. Regularly visit the dentist - Kicking off at the age of 1 at the latest, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing, your child should see their dentist regularly and understand that visiting them is an important part of growing up. If you receive benefits such as Family Tax Benefit A payments, you can take advantage of government programs such as The Child Dental Benefits Schedule. For more information & to see if your child is eligible please visit www.health.gov.au/cdbs Or Call - 13 24 68

Mackay boy’s heart of gold takes out Queensland award

cards at the door.

Tage Guzowski has taken out the gong for the Fred Hollows Humanity Awards being named this year’s Queensland Junior Ambassador for his work towards suicide prevention with the Grapevine Group.

These days Tage has taken his responsibility to the Help-a-Mate card distribution to an extra level by preparing Help-a-Mate Hub kits for organisations that have signed up as official distribution points, staffs Grapevine stalls and helps out with his mum at fundraisers like the Rotary Club of Mackay North’s high tea by making sure Help-a-Mate cards are at the place settings.

Tage was nominated by proud mum and Grapevine Group founder Debbie Knight who says she is thrilled her son has been recognised for the work he does. “When I was writing the nomination form, I included that Tage had his heart on becoming a surgeon to help others,” Debbie said. “I know my son has the qualities this Award asks for like compassion, integrity and kindness, but also I knew when I was nominating Tage that he’d be up against hundreds of others like him. “I had no idea he’d win it for the whole of Queensland. It was really special to see him receive an award in Queensland Parliament.” Tage started volunteering with the Grapevine Group at the age of five personally distributing over 1000 Help-a-Mate cards in his short life. The life-saving cards list the Mackay region’s suicide prevention resources. When he was younger, he attended events like Christmas Carols at the MECC and handed out

Tage has set up the Grapevine Group’s stall at the Mackay Regional Council’s Sports Expo, and most recently at the Run for MI Life event and distributed the Help-a-Mate cards to anyone who was interested. Tage himself was amazed he won the Humanity Award, but was quick to spruik the Grapevine Group message when asked why he does what he does. “Grapevine Group is important because it saves lives,” Tage said. At the tender age of 11, this young man has been volunteering for suicide prevention for more than half his life. Laurence Manning, Grapevine president, said he could not be prouder of Tage and his work towards suicide prevention.

“Tage has worked very closely with his mother as a volunteer for a number of years and he has made a valuable contribution to suicide prevention,” Mr Manning said. “I am delighted for Tage because not only are his efforts rewarded, but also that he continues his work spreading Grapevine’s suicide prevention message Queensland-wide.” Fred Hollows Humanity Awards are open to any Year 6 student and they can be nominated by a teacher, principal, parent or community member. The Junior Ambassador Award recognizes those making an outstanding difference in the community and is awarded to only eight children each year in Australia, one for each state or territory. With this win, Tage has been asked to nominate a Fred Hollows Foundation project to receive $5000, donated by corporate partner Specsavers. He has chosen to support the integrated eye care project in the Northern Territory for Indigenous Australians to address avoidable blindness. Foster Care

Be the light in a child’s darkness

allows us to care for complete strangers, is what makes fostering the hardest, yet the most rewarding, thing a person can do.

She added that you need to have patience and be non-judgemental to be a foster parent.

Lisa and her husband, Graham, started their fostering journey eight years ago.

“We can’t judge what people have been through. To have your children taken from you is to hit rock bottom. It’s not about punishing them, it’s about resolving the situation and healing the family dynamics to allow the child to return to their family.

“I saw another mother, one I respected and admired, foster children and I wanted to be like her. Trish and Phil have been fostering in our community for more than 25 years. Whenever anyone asks me why I decided to become a foster parent, I always laugh and say I copied Trish,” Lisa commented. Lisa and Graham have three biological children, now aged 24, 22 and 20. But in their household currently, there are three more children, aged 2, 7 and 9. While Lisa doesn’t know the exact number of children she has cared for over the years, she estimates it to be more than 70 who have come into her home, some may only stay for a night.

“It starts with breaking the cycle. Imagine if everyone was brave enough to foster just one child, how different the world would be.” To love another human being with no strings attached is what we were created to do as human beings. But this amazing gift that

“Through the foster care agency, Churches of Christ in Queensland, I look after mainly emergency foster needs. What that means is in the next 10 minutes, I could receive a phone call to say that a new child will be at my home within hours. They may only stay a couple of days before they return home. While a lot of situations can be long-term, many are short-term and urgent,” Lisa said.

“To work through the reunification process and see a child go back into a loving family is the most rewarding experience.” The hardest part about being a foster parent is understanding that the children aren’t yours, even though they are in your care. You may look after a child from birth and have to return them to their family in four years’ time. Undoubtedly this can be heartbreaking for foster parents, so many people will ask themselves if it’s worth the pain. The answer is yes. Yes it is worth it. The reason? Children are worth it. In your suburb right now, there are innocent children who’ve done nothing to deserve the trauma they are experiencing. They were unwillingly dragged into the chaos and dysfunction of the adults around them. To help, you just need to be brave enough to take the first step.

FOSTERING FACTS For children who need time away from their family, foster care provides a safe and supportive refuge allowing them time and space to heal and grow. Becoming a foster carer is an important decision for you and your family. It is a role that is both rewarding and challenging. When it comes to fostering, no two children or families are the same. Some children may need foster care for a few nights, while others will need a more permanent home. That is why the community needs a range of carers to meet the unique needs of children who require care.

THERE IS A HUGE VARIETY OF MEAT AND SEAFOOD AT MBW!

NOT JUST YOUR ORDINARY BUTCHER!

For many children who come into care, their world is filled with darkness. From abuse to violence, drugs and alcohol, it’s dark. You have the opportunity to shine light into their lives by providing love, care, and a positive outlook on life. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF FOSTER CARE, GENERAL AND KINSHIP. General Foster Care This is where the foster care is family-based care in an approved carer’s home for children who are in need of a safe and loving environment. Time frames vary and can range from a few days to many years, both full-time and part-time. Kinship Care Kinship care is when a member of the extended family or someone important to the child provides care when they are no longer able to live with their parents. This style of care supports the individual needs of children and young people, enabling them to retain connections with their family, community, language and culture. CAN I BECOME A FOSTER CARER? Everyday people from all walks of life become foster carers. Fostering welcomes carers of different ages and backgrounds, couples and sole carers, men and women, with children or without. The most important requirement is a commitment to achieve the best outcomes for the child, and a willingness to work within the formal requirements of the fostering process. If you have an open heart and a stable home, you could help transform a young life. You must be 18 years of age or older and eligible for a Blue Card. TAKE THE FIRST STEP TOWARD BECOMING A FOSTER CARER. Once you have made the decision to become a foster carer, here are the steps to take with Churches of Christ in Queensland. The below list is indicative of the steps you will take during the fostering process with an approximate timeframe. 1. Contact Churches of Christ in Queensland on 1800 222 273 and your nearest Churches of Christ service will contact you, or to explore your options further, visit www.qld.gov.au/community to apply via the Queensland Government. 2. Participate in an applicant carer interview. This interview will occur in your home and is an opportunity for you to ask questions about fostering. 3. Attend the Quality Care pre-service training for general foster carers. 4. Apply to be a foster carer by completing the Application for Approval and blue card application forms.

5. Participate in an assessment. This will involve a number of interviews with yourself and any household members to identify your ability to meet the requirements. 6. A report will be provided to the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women, who will make a decision regarding your approval. 7. If approved as a foster carer you will receive a certificate of approval. The initial Certificate of Approval is for 12 months. Following that period, you will go through renewal of approval assessments every two years.

FIND THE ROAD TO RESILIENCE with Whitsunday Martial Arts

A

n increased reliance on technology mixed with online social pressure has created an environment where children are living an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. The reduction in physical exertion mixed with unrealistic online social expectation means our children are subjected to high levels of stress with no outlet, which can lead to earlier cases of depression, anxiety and social isolation. The benefits of physical activity for growing bodies and minds is well documented. Frequent exercise has been proven to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression in children, improve classroom behavior, and often leads to increased selfconfidence through better feelings of body image and making new friends. Whitsunday Martial Arts (WMA) believes that for young people to become enthusiastic and engaged in physical activity, they need to be exposed to experiences that promote exercise through a fun and encouraging environment. Martial arts is a great way for children to build self-confidence and strength of mind and body in a safe and secure environment. WMA provides youth classes in both boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu every weekday afternoon from 4pm. Owner and head MMA coach, Anton Zafir,

explains how these classes can help children dealing with the pressures of a modern world.

achievement, courage, social interaction and is shown to improve resilience.”

“The need for an appropriate outlet to let off frustration, energy, hormones and all of the other things that an adolescent may encounter these days is forever growing. With bullying at an alltime high, Whitsunday Martial Arts aims to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for youth to experience the great outcomes associated with practicing a martial art for both fun and competition.”

Boxing classes run for ages 5-11 and 12-17 and focus on technical boxing fundamentals; including foot work, combinations, defence and attack with a big emphasis on conditioning and fitness. Students learn movement toward and away from their opponent focusing on balance and fundamentals. No contact (sparring) is done in classes with coach’s supervision, protective equipment and relative experience in the class. Students build confidence knowing that they can defend themselves should they need to. It is a standard rule that whatever martial art students are taught is strictly only to be used in self defence and only when completely necessary.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes follow a traditional curriculum where students train in the traditional uniform (Gi) and progress through the normal belt grading system. Jiu Jitsu training is based on all aspects of grappling both standing and on the ground. Students learn both submissions and control positions based on leverage, biomechanics and posture. A Student with a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu foundation often transitions to other martial arts well. Anton added, “WMA has had overwhelming feedback from parents of students after only a few months of training; citing improvements in their respect, discipline, energy and anger management. Martial arts training often leads to increased confidence, feelings of self-worth and

“The benefits of martial arts for children are endless and Whitsunday Martial Arts aims to foster an environment where every child can grow into the young person they need to be. A zerotolerance policy is in place for students practicing what they’re taught outside the gym environment,” Anton said. to any form of pleasure, this includes exercise. Studies show short bursts of exercise can distract or sate addictive thoughts and behaviour 6. Alleviate anxiety – exercise helps to calm your mind and re-focus your worries. Moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise is best for this 7. Boost creativity – using your body for movement naturally opens up energy flows that can inspire and cultivate creative juices 8. Clear the mind – work distractions? Toxic friendships? After a good workout you will feel alive and invigorated, ready to tackle that to do list! 10. A sense of achievement – Everybody knows that the hardest part of a workout is getting yourself there! Family Fun Fitness With RPTM

Did you know that if you make movement a daily priority, your kids will too? In a study where parents and their children wore activity trackers to measure steps and heart rate, it showed that when the parents actively chose to exercise during the day, it made their children more likely to spend more time moving as well. Active kids, happy parents, better sleep patterns and a healthier lifestyle – a few simple changes to your daily routine can have an incredibly positive impact on your family’s health. We chat to Linda Rankin – Director, mother and personal trainer of RPTM, on some easy hacks to keep your family more active.

“Our children are always watching, so if they grow up in an environment where an exercise routine is part of their daily ritual, they will form this habit and are more likely to carry the additional movement into adulthood themselves.” SUNDAY-FUNDAY “Choose a day of the week to do something fun with your children. Feed the ducks at the Gooseponds as you walk the circuit and play on the exercise machines along the trail. Play a family game of beach cricket on the sand. Walk a stretch of the Bluewater Trail and finish with a swim in the Bluewater Lagoon. Take a day trip to Cape Hillsborough, Finch Hatton or Eungella and walk the nature trails.”

THE DAILY HABIT “Schedule some time each morning or evening to get in a quick bit of exercise. Take the dog for a walk, let the kids tell you about their day, go for a quick bike ride. Make it as important as brushing your teeth or having a shower, so it’s not something you think about, it’s a daily habit.” RPTM provides a fun, family-friendly environment for men and women to workout in a studio environment where everyone is welcome. There are child-friendly classes to provide busy parents with options to improve their health and wellbeing. Good things come to those who sweat! Visit rptm.net for more information.

rom increased strength and flexibility to improved heart health and inner peace, 2020 is the year to roll out the mat. But if you’re nervous about being left behind in class, don’t be. 8 Limb Yoga provides a beginners course, so a bunch of budding yogis can learn the basics with no judgement or expectation on ability. 8 Limb Yoga Mackay owner, Sue Deakin, explains that yoga is more about being courageous than the ability to touch your toes. “The number one thing we hear from people when we suggest coming to yoga is 'I can’t do yoga because I am not flexible.' Yoga is not about being flexible or perfecting a pose; yoga is about being courageous, accepting no limitations, being who you are now even if that doesn't look perfect. Yoga is for everyone, no matter your age, size or ability,” she said. 8 Limb Yoga’s beginners course is designed for those who have been wanting to try yoga, but have felt nervous or bewildered about how to start. Sue commented, “It can be a little intimidating

2020

starting something new, therefore we created this programme that allows students to be introduced to yoga in a comfortable and safe setting with no judgement or expectations. Students will be provided with the foundations of yoga during six classes over three weeks. This kick-start will give students confidence to step into any other classes or workshops we offer as they progress into their yoga journey.” With so many benefits directly attributed to yoga, Sue explains that people have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. “Often the benefits start with the physical; the body starts to feel better, people experience increased flexibility and muscle strength, they notice improvements in respiration, energy and vitality. Our students tell us they sleep better after a class. After a few more classes, benefits progress to reduction in stress levels and our students feel more focused, relaxed and at peace.” 8 Limb Yoga’s beginners course starts 14th January. Visit 8limbyoga.com.au for bookings and enquiries.

Sandy completed her 8 Limb Yoga beginners course last November. At the time of her testimonial, she had been going to 8 Limb Yoga for four weeks. “I found the beginners course very good for understanding the different styles of yoga and how to do the breathing. The greatest benefit I’ve experienced is peace. Stretching is easier and I’m stronger in balance. Friends have noticed how much I’ve toned up when we’ve been out for coffee. Taking that first step to walk through the door is the hardest, but if I can achieve all this in a month, then I encourage anyone seeking change in themselves to give it a try.”

A World with Bluetooth New hearing devices connect you direct to a world of services, including Siri! Bluetooth, whether we like to admit it or not, has become a very common, almost essential part of our day to day lives. This also extends to hearing aid users. It is almost standard now for most hearing aids to have Bluetooth capability in them, including entrylevel devices fully subsidised through the Government Hearing Services Program or from around $845 per ear those without a pension card. These devices not only assist being able to hear much clearer on the phone without the need for any neck loops or clips, but they have a lot of additional functions to not only assist with day to day hearing but also make access to your phone more accessible. A great example is that you can now use Siri or Google to give voice commands to your phone such as requesting to dial a certain contact in your

phone, they will be phoned without the need for dialling and be heard as clearly as possible direct to the hearing aids. This is perfect for those patients with poor dexterity who cannot manage to dial. Android and iPhone also have a voice to text function, which allows the speech of the person talking to you on the phone to come up on your phone screen as text if you have trouble hearing. Another voice activated function available is google maps which can we used to find a location and use the direct streaming of your hearing aids to tell you where to go, so if you want to go to the library all you need to say to your phone is “hey google direct me to the nearest library” and you will be directed straight there with voice commands. Let’s say you are travelling overseas and having navigated

your way around the streets with google maps guiding you through your hearing aids and you want to order lunch and do not speak the native language. This is not a problem, just use google or other translate apps on your phone and your phone or hearing aid microphone will pick up the foreign voice and translate it to you direct to your hearing aids in very close to real time! Done a bit of walking and wondering how many steps you have taken? Well rest assured your hearing aids now have biofeedback functions which can track your steps more accurately then any fit bit, due to the location of the accelerometer on the head it is accurately able to distinguish between walking, running, cycling and any other linear motion. They can also measure your temperature and heart

rate very accurately and should you have a fall they can detect a falling motion and send a text alert to a nominated person to advise you have had a fall. Been a long day, you have taken off your hearing aids and can’t remember where you put them? No problem, all direct to smart phone hearing aids have a ‘find my hearing aid’ function, allowing you to use google maps to locate and pinpoint exactly where your hearing aid is and guide you to where their location. The possibilities that have been created through this direct to smart phone hearing aid technology really does mean the world is now your oyster by opening up a world of auditory functionality to all those hard of hearing, not to mention finally making hearing aids a hip accessory to have!

Make me Over! GET THE LOOK OF LOVE

With Chendelle’s hair I wanted to create something soft and romantic. To achieve this I first blowdried Chendelle’s hair using Juice Xagerate styling mousse to create body and form a good foundation for our style. I then went through and sprayed each section with Pure Plumping Clay Spray to protect Chendelle’s hair from the heat and to help hold our style.

BEFORE

I then finished by curling Chendelle’s hair with a MUK Curling Wand and then brushed out to create that beautiful wave.

AFTER

Hair - By Ria Richards

Stocker of Davines and Pure Haircare, Olaplex and Faboloso

Makeup - By Kailee Potter To create Chendelle’s makeup look we first started with a clean fresh face and than primed her skin with Youngbloods mineral CC Perfecting Primer in the colour Bare. To keep Chendelle’s face looking fresh and dewy I next applied the Youngblood mineral liquid foundation in the colour capri with a light dusting of the Youngblood mineral powder in the colour warm beige making sure I still kept her makeup base light and natural I then worked with the Youngblood immunative pallet and contour palette to highlight and lowlight certain areas of her face to sculpt and define. I then went in with Youngblood Sundance bronzer and cream blush and finished the face with Youngblood translucent setting powder. I kept Chendelle’s eye shadow colour natural using warm browns and golden tones to make her eyes pop and lined them with eyeliner in the colour chestnut applying strip lashes to make her eyes pop more and finished her eyes by applying Youngblood masacara in the colour blackout. Her eyebrows only needed a very light touch up of colour using the Youngblood eyebrow pencil in the colour natural brown and I applied the colour Blushing Nude on her lips

Jan, Rachael (Editor of Core Life) and son Reef

“The Universe only gives you as much as you can handle” In that case, I must be made of pretty tough stuff! Or just damn unlucky. Two years ago my marriage broke-up just three months after my son was born. Suddenly I became a single mum, battling to keep a job I loved and raise my beautiful baby. Many days were spent with him on the boob while I was answering phone calls and typing emails. It was a crazy whirlwind of a time where I was waking up to feed him several times a night and then working an eight hour day to pay the bills. Exhaustion became an overwhelming part of everyday life that I simply got used to. This continued for the first couple of years and I accepted this as the ‘new norm’; that was until August 5th this year when I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. Everyone expects a single-mum who works full time to be tired which is why I hadn’t spotted the symptoms - exhaustion, crankiness, pains in the gut, bad gas and irregular poo. All things that you can easily attribute to a stressful life. In fact, when I got diagnosed, my life had just become pretty perfect. I had moved to a new apartment, my son was happy and my mum was staying with us for six months. My life was finally settling down.

Getting cancer at this point seemed tragically unfair. “Why me?” That was a thought that constantly floated through my mind in those early days. “The Universe only gives you as much as you can handle” Well, if the universe thought I could handle this, then I was certainly going to give it my best shot! So that’s how, almost five months ago, I found myself with a high-energy toddler, a high-intensity job and a highly scary cancer. Fortunately, the cancer that had been growing in me for up to two years, was removed within 48 hours of diagnosis. The bowel resection was painful but knowing that the cancer had been removed gave me great peace of mind. Next step was chemo, eight rounds of IV chemo every three weeks for six months complemented by four chemo tablets, twice a day. A whopping 960 tablets in total. Many people ask me why I needed the chemo once the tumour had been removed. Put simply, when the lymph nodes are affected (two of mine were) there is a high chance a rogue cancer cell could escape and reach another part of the body. With chemo I have an 82% chance I will return to normal health and without chemo it is only 57%.

For me, the choice was simple. I decided to continue working while receiving regular chemo treatment. I was lucky enough to be able to work mainly from home and decided that having a purpose and a daily focus would aid my recovery. Also, to be blunt, without working I couldn’t afford to pay my rent! Miraculously, I have now completed six rounds of chemo and I only have two left, a fact I am extremely proud of. During this time I have completed five print deadlines and managed to stay reasonably sane throughout. In fact, this journey has taught me how to manage my stress levels. I used to have a ball of anxiety sitting in my gut throughout deadlines, I now realise the damage this can do both physically and mentally. Since my diagnosis, I work in a calm and systematic way, without getting stressed by the enormity of the task. And do you know what? Everything still gets done to a high standard and on-time. On the 13th February I will complete my final round of chemo – thank you to all my family, to my faithful friends and to the medical profession. I am hoping the universe will slow down now, I have been tested enough, a healthy life is on the horizon. www.corelife.com.au 85

Karen and Rowena

KAREN’S COURAGE TO FIGHT CANCER E

ight months ago, we shared the incredible story of Karen Filby, the Whitsunday local who received a deadly diagnosis of lung cancer. After being told she had only three months to live by her oncologist, she’s already beaten the odds by surviving for more than a year. But what has so many people following her journey is that she’s not only surviving, she’s fighting back and winning the battle. Fifteen active cancers were discovered in Karen’s lungs and had spread to a point where it was believed that nothing could be done. Chemotherapy wouldn’t be an effective option and it was too late for surgery. Karen recalls how she felt on the day of her cancer diagnosis. “I went numb, then I got angry. I looked at this guy sitting across from me and I thought, who are you to tell me I’ll die in three months, I’m not done. When we walked out, I remember turning to my partner Dave and saying, ‘get me out of here and don’t bring me back until I’m cured so I can show him he’s wrong,” she said.

When we last spoke with Karen, she had turned to local Integrative Medicine Practitioner, Rowena Kissun from Kissun Clinics, who had assisted her with naturopathic treatments in Australia and overseas. When we interviewed Karen, her PET scan showed her tumours had reduced from 15 to 5 and her tumour markers had reduced by 50 per cent. We followed up with Rowena to check in on Karen’s progress since, and are delighted to hear that Karen’s results continue to dramatically improve. “The results from Karen’s most recent PET scan are simply astounding. She has only ONE active cancer remaining in the primary site, meaning the treatment combined with nutritional changes have dramatically improved her health,” Rowena said. Rowena has both a medical and a natural health background and enjoys working alongside oncologists and medical professionals who understand the benefits that scientifically verified natural treatments can have alongside modern medicine. She has teamed up with a cancer hospital in Bangkok offering intravenous natural

treatments, Insulin Potentiated Therapies, Hyperthermia, Immune Therapy including NK cell therapy and low dose Chemotherapy, all through Kissun Clinics and the hospital overseas. “I love working with oncologists who appreciate what I do with diet, supplements and live blood testing; because it gives the patient numerous choices that may appear outside the box to some but are overseen by our team of oncologists here and overseas. The team consists of doctors from Germany, Mexico, Thailand, USA and Australia, bringing new technologies in cancer treatments to patients in North Queensland either through my clinics in Cannonvale or Mackay or through the facility in Bangkok,” Rowena added. Not only has Karen’s cancer reduced, but by having non-invasive treatments with a focus on natural remedies, her overall health has benefited. With Rowena’s help, she has a different view on nutrition.

“Initially the thought of cancer scared me so much that I ended up having more anxiety over my food choices than about the actual cancer itself. I know that sugar feeds cancer, so I found myself paranoid about everything I was eating, to the point I just started eating only a few almonds. After I got over that fear, my emotional eating got the better of me. While I try to stay as positive as I can, I did have my dark times, and I’d turn to junk food for comfort. “I had gone from one extreme to the other. The poor food choices showed in my bloods, and it was Rowena who gave me the talking to that I needed. Her help in nutrition has been incredibly valuable. I now know what I need to do to nourish my body. I follow a 70:30 diet where I follow a strict keto diet to reduce sugars in the blood 70% of the time. The 30% allows a little bit of give so it’s attainable long-term,” Karen said. She added that the improved nutrition along with meditation has helped her health in general as well as assisting with reducing the cancer.

“I had a few general health issues from not eating well, which have improved with a change in diet. My gut issues have gone away and in general I feel a lot better.” “I have the fight in me, I just needed someone to help me with the fight. Rowena said, “It’s not a one size fits all disease, so for others the medical route may
