THE YEAR IN REVIEW featuring the Whitsunday Regional Council and Nude Lunch

Now it’s time for me to step-up and open a new chapter in my life. I am sad to see her go but I am also excited, ready to embrace this new challenge and become independent. I mean, there is only so long a 36 year old girl can live with her mother right!?

As you open the door to the New Year, what does your new chapter look like?

96-97

AIRLIE BEACH FESTIVAL OF MUSIC map of venues and headlining acts

For me, a new chapter is beginning. At the end of October I waved goodbye to my mum who flew back to England after six months living with me, helping me navigate life as a single mum.

I am proud of the direction Core Life has taken this year, not only have we published some of our biggest issues ever and worked alongside many local businesses, we have also supported many community events, organisations and causes. This is something we feel deeply passionate about at Core and we are excited to bring you a special Christmas issue that includes a fifteen-page feature for Nude Lunch which raises money for Ovarian Cancer. Also, in this issue is an article on Act for Kids who help children suffering from abuse and neglect plus an inspiring story about the Amateur Chef initiative raising awareness for suicide prevention. As this year comes to a close, I think it’s important we all check-in with each other and ask ‘are you ok?’ The festive season is a fun time for many but can be a tough time for others that are feeling lonely or sad. There are many ways we can help in our community and in 2019 we will be publishing more stories that help connect local causes with individuals that could help. I hope this issue inspires you to connect with a cause near you!

Tell Us Something most people don't know about you? Most days I have clay under my fingernails. Originally from the rich farmlands of the Lockyer Valley, Cindy has travelled around the country, living in the Atherton Tablelands before finally deciding to make the Whitsundays home almost 25 years ago. Her career as a secretary has led her to many interesting positions from secretary to the Dean of Agriculture to secretary for a Gold Mining Company. She now works at Proserpine State School where she looks after everything to with students from enrolments to terminations and daily attendance. “I love being part of the vital, ever effervescent lovely team in the front office of Proserpine State High School,” Cindy said. Married to a loving, dedicated mad scientist/chemistry senior teacher, Cindy enjoys a crazy, colorful life on a wild and woolly five acre property. The acreage is occupied by 6 erratic chooks, an egg eating goanna and a resident possum who falls out of his tree regularly. Cindy has two children, who are now adults. One is an international flight attendant and the other is a mechanical engineering university student. One of her most significant life moments was looking at her newborn’s tiny feet. “I kept wondering where those little feet were going to take this little person through life’s wonderful adventurous pathways. Now I am watching them both carve a life as adults and it is truly amazing,” said Cindy. Whenever she gets a spare moment, Cindy can be found getting her hands covered in clay around the potter’s wheel.

Tell Us Something most people don't know about you? You can also find me at Paya Boutique once a fortnight. A self-proclaimed ‘happy-go-lucky’ kind of Dutchie, Judith grew up in the Netherlands and moved to Australia to start a life and raise a family with her husband 14 years ago. Saying goodbye to friends and family in Holland and moving to the other side of the world was a hard decision for Judith but one she is glad she made. “It was tough at the time but further down the track I am very content in life and proud of the life Max and I have created. We have two beautiful children and a home which is always open to our friends,” said Judith. Her two children, Micah (7) and Ava (8) have grown up in the Whitsundays and Judith loves the lifestyle her and her husband have created here, spending time on the water as much as they can. When the couple first arrived in Australia they had a plumbing business and then started operating a charter boat. Unfortunately, their boat was lost during Cyclone Debbie. Judith studied art therapy in Holland which is a type of psychotherapy using media art as a form of expression and communication. Her affinity for art and beauty has become a useful skill in helping create the beautiful environment at Cherrie Baby in Proserpine where she now works. “I love the creative side of my work. I am responsible for running the shop and merchandising. It’s such a happy environment and I love it! I feel very blessed meeting so many happy customers and working with beautiful products and even creating our own.”

A YEAR IN REVIEW with

WHITSUNDAY REGIONAL COUNCIL A PERFECT PAIR Mayor Andrew Willcox and CEO Barry Omundson 'A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is just drudgery…but a vision with a plan can change the world.' – old proverb. When you combine the big-picture thinking of a visionary with the technical prowess of an action-man, two men together can move mountains. It may be a lofty expectation, but Whitsunday Regional Council is striving to become the best council in the world, led by Mayor Andrew Willcox and CEO Barry Omundson. All relationships require a level of investment and trust, and arguably, none is more crucial than the relationship between a Mayor and CEO. “Communication is key and I am proud of the close working relationship the CEO and I have formed. I’m a bigpicture thinker who has a positive vision for every part of the region with attracting new industry and job creation at the fore. However, a vision without action is just an illusion. That’s where the CEO comes in. He has the technical knowledge and legal expertise to ensure we deliver projects efficiently and comply with the endless red tape within local government,” Mayor Willcox said. With the fate of the region’s projects in their hands, Mr. Omundson commented that communication and mutual respect between the two was key. “We have over $200M in projects to deliver in less than 18 months so there is no shortage of projects. While not a project, turning around

our organisational culture has been a shared job and takes leadership, perseverance and persistence.” Mayor Willcox agreed, stating, “At the moment we have so many major infrastructure projects on the go, I need someone who is able to coordinate different teams to bring them all to fruition.” A number of exciting community projects have come to fruition this year, most of which are covered in the pages to come, but one which is still in the planning phase is the Whitsunday Marine Centre of Excellence, a project both men are excited about. “The Whitsunday Marine Centre of Excellence has been a challenge that we both have put our hearts and souls into and one that a month or so ago we thought we had lost, after an enormous amount of work together in advocacy and bringing together all the elements we need,” Mr. Omundson said. Mayor Willcox continued with, “We already have a significant boating fraternity that needs to be serviced and with the opening up of anchorages and accessibility to superyachts, this has increased. The Centre of Excellence will incorporate an education facility and a shipyard to service superyachts. I believe this will be a huge game changer for Bowen and the greater Whitsundays creating new industry and new job opportunities.” Apart from delivering many community initiatives, Mayor Willcox is most proud to be leading a united and inclusive council. “I share all the information with my Councillors and the CEO provides frank and fearless advice to us all.”

GET TO KNOW YOUR MAYOR AND CEO MAYOR ANDREW WILLCOX Born and bred in Bowen, Mayor Willcox loves the Whitsunday Region’s natural beauty; from its beaches to the ever-changing countryside out west as well as its laid-back lifestyle and friendly folk. He is most proud of his three children, who he says have all grown to be decent human beings under his and wife Raylene’s guidance.

WHAT’S SOMETHING UNUSUAL ABOUT YOU MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW? “I live in the tropics but love to ski on snow.”

WHAT’S A MOTTO YOU LIVE BY? “It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice.”

CEO BARRY OMUNDSON Although he was born in Charleville, Mr. Omundson called Brisbane home prior to moving to the Whitsundays. He loves the Whitsunday Region’s amazing beaches along with the rainforests, farming and agricultural areas and the rugged beauty of places like Mt. Coolon. He’s been happily married for 30 years, one of his greatest life achievements.

WHAT’S SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT YOU? “I love art; painting, drawing and writing poetry.”

WHAT’S A MOTTO YOU LIVE BY? “It’s what you do when no one is looking that MATTERS.”

Jan Clifford, John Collins, Mike Brunker, Peter Ramage, Dave Clark

Meet your Local Councillors Jan Clifford Originally from Melbourne, Jan Clifford moved to the warm Whitsunday climate in 1994. Jan looks after Division 1 which encompasses some of Cannonvale, all of Airlie Beach, Jubilee Pocket, Flametree, Shute Harbour and the Islands. This year she has been involved with the ongoing recovery work post Cyclone Debbie, the revitalisation of the Airlie Foreshore and the reconstruction of Shute Harbour

Ron Petterson

This year Peter has been most proud about sealing of Strathmore Road and renewing various bridges in his division. “This has been so important for the safety of motorists travelling along these roads,” said Peter. In addition to this, the Collinsville 72 hour RV rest-stop has been a huge success. “We are seeing a steady stream of travellers into town which is giving Collinsville a much needed boost,” said Peter.

Next year her focus will be on improving our Parks and other social infrastructure including improved parking in the CBD, water security issues, foot and bike paths.

Next year, Peter is looking forward to the installation of the Miller Street lookout which will give a bird’s eye view over Collinsville and will also be looking at water supply options for residents in Mt Coolon.

“I would also like to be proactive in attracting more festivals and events to the Whitsundays,” said Jan.

The person who never makes a mistake never makes anything

Peter Ramage A 3rd generation born and bred resident of Collinsville, Peter loves the rural lands he calls home. He is the Division 4 Councillor looking after over 22,000 hectares encompassing Collinsville, Dingo Beach, Hydeaway Bay, the O’Connell River and the Proserpine Dam.

You’re only a fool if you mistake the same mistake twice!

Overseeing the Proserpine, Wilsons and Conway areas, John Collins is extremely proud to call the Whitsundays home. “I moved here from Silkwood near Tully when I was four years old, it’s like living in Paradise!” Said John. As a local Councillor, it is John’s mission to implement projects and improvements to enhance the lifestyle and livability of his slice of paradise.

“Seeing the Water Park in Proserpine open to the community in August this year was very exciting as it was the first project delivered from the Proserpine Masterplan,” said John. Next year, John is looking forward to seeing the Proserpine Main Street upgrade, improvements to Lake Proserpine which will attract more tourists and also getting the Proserpine Entertainment Centre up and running. WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU? I was at a wedding in Mackay and both the soles fell off my shoes so I had to walk in my socks! WHAT MOTTO DO YOU LIVE BY? Never take a backwards step.

Mike Brunker Originally from Collinsville, Mike Brunker moved to Bowen in 1998 and now looks after Division 6 which includes half of Bowen up to Queens Beach and the northern end of the region. “It’s just a great place to live, the lifestyle and the people are the drawcard for me,” said Mike. This year, Mike has concentrated his time on improving the livability of the area, enhancing local parks and gardens such as Barker, Hansen and Gideon Pott Parks. Also, improving roads is a key focus. Next year, Mike is looking forward to improving the outdoor recreational areas for the benefit of both local residents and tourists visiting the area. “We are looking forward to upgrading walking paths at Rose Bay and Horseshoe Bay,” said Mike. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN? Crickets WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU? Appearing in a nude calendar to raise money for the junior rugby league club. They had to do two reprints of the calendar so it stuck around but we at least we raised $5k for the club!

Dave Clark Dave Clark is the Councillor for Division 5, looking after the Bowen township and the residential and rural areas just south of Bowen. He was born in Mackay and moved to Bowen when he was only six months old. “I’ve always loved the natural beauty of the area, the beaches and the people; there’s a great sense of community here,” said Dave.

“I love this area because of its natural diverse beauty and the unbreakable strength of community & mateship,” said Ron. A strong advocate for improving mental health services and awareness across the region, Ron Petterson fights hard for what matters to his community. In his role as Councillor for Canonnvale, he would like to see improved road safety along Shute Harbour Road and also a state high school in the Cannonvale area. This year, Ron has been involved with the Cannonvale Beach project which is nearing completion and also and the Cannonvale Lake Project which is about to commence. He is excited about the completion of both projects next year which will see the livability of his division improve significantly for local residents. He has also been a strong advocate for the $2.3mil Gregory- Cannon Valley Rd intersection upgrade and looks forward to seeing that come to fruition. WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU? I’m 52 years old so there has been a few! What comes to mind would be whilst attending a formal dinner in Melbourne on a boat, I was boarding the boat when I mis-stepped and my leg went between the boat and the jetty, getting soaked in the water. I had to then sit through the entire night with half a wet leg! WHAT MOTTO DO YOU LIVE BY? In all that you do, be true to yourself, be the best that you can be, and make a positive difference

In the year ahead, Dave is looking forward to The Beautiful Bowen project which is about to commence. This project will will see the beautification of the town entrance and main street with landscaping and signage. To complement this, he would love to see continual improvements to local parks, beaches and recreational areas, along with the introduction of more cycleways and pathways to ensure people enjoy their time here.

We’ve had a few big wins this year. We’ve not long completed the Proserpine Water Park and about to finish the Gloucester Avenue upgrade. Both projects have had their challenges, but both have been delivered very well by the teams involved.

“We get involved in all sorts of jobs from building rock walls, water parks, rural roads and bridges. There’s never a dull moment. As for a typical day, I don’t think I have one, and that’s part of the fun!” Said John.

TENAYA JAMES Contracts Supervisor Being passionate about your work is something most people strive for. It comes across in the way you behave when you’re at work and shines through in your successes. For Tenaya, her passion for sustainability and creating innovative ways to improve existing structures and systems within the Whitsunday Water Capital Works Team has led her to many successes this year. Originally from North Brisbane, Tenaya has lived in the Whitsunday area for six years. She lives with her fiance and her 1yr old blue heeler rescue pup called Stella.

In her free time Tenaya loves travelling and has just returned from a month in Europe. “I love experiencing different cultures and trying new types of food which I got to do everyday while I was in Europe,” said Tenaya. On the weekends she likes to go camping, play a round of golf with friends and have big bbq cookups. Tenaya’s role with the Whitsunday Regional Council involves managing multiple projects across the region, visiting sites to monitor the progress and quality of projects, meetings with contractors and then project planning to make sure everything is on track. Her projects can include anything from upgrading water mains and bores to telemetry network

overhauls or civil works in parks to optimize nutrient output. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR? It’s a tie between winning the National Association of Women in Construction’s Achievement in Civil Construction award and completing the Bowen Water Treatment Plant Solar Upgrade Project. To see a project go from conception to completion and have data showing it performing beyond our expectations was a very proud moment. TELL US SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? John’s son attends Cannonvale State School and his wife works at the local marina. They find the region very welcoming, have made many friends already and love exploring the outdoors in their free time.

If you can mix your dream location with your dream job then you’re sure to be in heaven! This is how John and his family feel about moving from the Netherlands to the Whitsundays 12 months ago.

“The weekends are reserved for exploring the region and Queensland. We often travel to local gems and enjoy the beautiful scenery and waters. Like many locals, we enjoy the water a lot,” John said.

“We visited the region ten years ago and decided then that if we ever have the opportunity to move to Australia, we want to live in the Whitsundays. Now, here we are, enjoying every single day in our little piece of paradise!” Said John.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? The diversity. I meet experts on subject matter every day and I love absorbing that information and transforming that into ‘saleable’ business cases. Those business cases address themes such as financial viability, technical studies and risk management.

I also enjoy working in a team that has an indoor and outdoor focus, it brings a lot of variety into my administration role and presents me with a lot of opportunities to learn and take on additional work that is of a more industrial/project nature. What do you do in your free time? Since moving to Bowen I’ve really gotten into Stand Up Paddle Boarding and you’ll find me out on the water most weekends. The people at the customer service section of the Whitsunday Regional Council are the friendly faces that greet us, the calm response when we have an issue that needs resolving and the source of knowledge when we have a query. They are the first impression we receive from the Council and play an integral role from the four customer service centres dotted across the region. Shane manages a team of 15 staff at the Council Customer Service Centres which are located in Bowen, Proserpine, Cannonvale and Collinsville. “My job involves working with most departments within Council to improve our back-office service to the community as well as our frontline response to emergencies. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR? The opening of the Cannonvale Customer Service Centre was a great achievement for our team. We have also made improvements to our processes throughout Council in regards to customer requests, implementation of our new phone system, our Customer Service officer training framework and work on the Proserpine and Bowen Admin design concepts. For me personally, I enjoyed chairing and presenting internationally at Government Customer Service Conferences on culture and commonsense approaches to service. COLLINSVILLE RV SITE SUCCESS! Groups of travelling RV enthusiasts tour Australia every year and are always on the look-out for new destinations to explore and overnight parking sites equipped with RV friendly facilities. For almost a decade, the Collinsville RV site had been nothing more than a flat piece of land with a dump point at one end. That is, until this year, when a joint initiative between the Queensland Government and Whitsunday Regional Council co-funded a significant improvement project that has totally revitalised the site. The project has seen the planting of a large variety of fruit trees along the creek bank behind the Rest Area. There is now a central turf area containing four shelters with tables and benches underneath. Visitors can enjoy bbq facilities and a number of portable water taps have been provided for ease of access.

A new toilet block has been built with disabled facilities and hot water showers. Much of this work was completed by A & J Doyle Constructions who have been working in the region for the last 15 years and are honoured to be a part of the community improvements. The Collinsville Information Centre is also now located at the RV Rest Area so visitors can talk to local experts in the area. “Collinsville has always been a friendly town, but since the RV Rest Area has opened, the visitors are always saying how friendly and welcoming the locals are. The locals are very proud of what is happening here and they can see the difference it has made to the town,” said Brett Murphy from the Visitor Information Centre.

KIRBY RAMAGE Collinsville’s Support Officer to Area Manager

Managing a busy household for her four sons makes Kirby Ramage’s life skills perfectly suited to her job for the Whitsunday Regional Council. Her multi-tasking role as Assistant to the Area Manager for the Collinsville area sees her working with a huge team of 37 people, communicating between departments and generally ensuring everyone is on the same page. “I assist the area manager, supervisors and works coordinator as well as communicating and working with other departments across the entire WRC. I am involved in the daily running of the area, assisting with capital works projects and monitoring of budgets,” said Kirby.

The local community has been monitoring how the new RV site has impacted the local economy by asking visitors to drop their receipts from local purchases into a box. The total is then calculated at the end of each month. So far this year $113,000 worth of receipts have been collected with an estimated additional 30% not handed in. “The Information Centre has also recorded a not too shabby 300 tourists per month, and that is just the people that take the time to sign the visitor’s book!” Said Brett. The RV site in Collinsville has blossomed into another local success story and locals are looking forward to its continued growth. A & J Doyle Constructions completed the new amenities block at the Collinsville Showgrounds.

A work life balance is important to Kirby and that is something her role at the Whitsunday Regional Council has been able to give her. She loves spending her leisure time outdoors fishing and hunting, spending most weekends at the beach or camping on the river. What has been your biggest achievement at work this year? My biggest achievement is that at the end of each day, I am confident that I have helped everyone that has asked for help, to the best of my ability. Beautiful Bowen Gets An Upgrade

Tim Rose Breathtaking beaches, the Big Mango and the Bowen Jetty, Bowen is one of Queensland’s most desirable holiday picks. We’re lucky to have it as a jewel in the Whitsundays crown, our northernmost destination famous for a relaxed tropical vibe. As beautiful as it already is, Bowen is undergoing a makeover. The Whitsunday Regional Council’s vision for its Beautiful Bowen project is an abundance of beautifying work throughout the town centre in an effort to increase its appeal even more to domestic and international tourists. This ongoing project was made possible through $5 million funding from the State Government. Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe said, “The townscape improvements would clearly enhance Bowens existing charm and further the towns reputation as a tourist destination. “Increasing visitor numbers and improving the overall visitor experience will obviously boost the local economy and on top of that, the council estimates it will create or support 55 jobs, which is terrific news for regional families,” he said. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said the townscape works will greatly enhance the visual appeal of the entrances of Bowen and the town itself. “The Bowen community is proud of its town and these improvements will give residents an even greater source of pride as they see more and more tourists staying here for longer periods,” Mayor Willcox said.

“The council appreciates the state support following the damage inflicted by Cyclone Debbie last year and this project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when the two levels of government work together for the community.”

planting vegetation to make the area around the saltworks look more attractive.”

Apart from benefits to tourism, local and state Government believe the great legacy from a project like this is that it will not only increase livability for Bowen residents, but could also attract more families to live in this spectacular part of the world.

• FURTHER FEATURE STEEL SIGNS NORTH AND SOUTH APPROACHES OF THE BRUCE HIGHWAY

Tim Rose is the Director of Major Projects for the Whitsunday Regional Council and has previously spent many years living in Bowen. “The beaches in Bowen are truly special. Renowned as hidden gems, the biggest challenge has been that the most beautiful parts of Bowen are hidden away. Until now, our least attractive areas are the first impression of the town to many newcomers. This is something we are endeavouring to change with the Beautiful Bowen Project,” said Tim. With construction starting early this month, Tim Rose is at the helm of this much-needed upgrade, which will see many areas of the town refreshed, most importantly at the entranceway. “I am most excited about making the entranceway look more appealing,” said Tim. “We have 4m high letters spelling out the word ‘Bowen’ which will be really striking as people approach Bowen on the highway. We are also doing up the murals on the outskirts of town and

Known as the mural capital of Australia, Bowen has more than 25 intricately painted mural sites. The Beautiful Bowen project will further enhance this town spectacle, ensuring Bowen becomes an even more sought-after holiday destination and further cements the Whitsundays as the most beautiful place on Earth. www.corelife.com.au 25

s the summer heats up it feels like we all chase the water and an opportunity to cool down, get wet and have fun. One of the Whitsunday Regional Council’s most fun, kid-friendly projects this year has been the construction of the Proserpine Waterpark.

For the bigger kids there is a high platform area with mounted water guns, a double slide for races and one large enclosed tunnel slide with water jets. There are also water jet arches to run through, a palm tree with coconuts that squirt water and many other fountains and fun ways to create interactive play.

Not only does this local waterpark offer a much-needed cool, wet and fun recreation area for local residents, it also acts as an extra draw card to visitors, encouraging them to stay longer and enjoy more of what Proserpine has to offer.

The entire park is fitted with colourful sails from Airlie Sails and Shade Solutions which provide shaded, sunsafe play areas for kids. You will also find comfortable bench seating, a picnic table, carparking with a new extended carpark currently in construction and access to changing room faculties.

The $1.7 million project was designed by TP Aquatic Constructions who also designed the 13 slide waterpark at BIG 4 Adventure Whitsunday. The design of the waterpark incorporates the latest features in waterpark design with a focus on interactive play areas and slides. There is a large tipping bucket that rocks back and forth overhead, spilling water over the main play area and drenching anyone underneath every two minutes. There are small fountains that stem from colourful plastic characters which are perfect for little ones to experiment with water.

Whitsunday Regional Council took many lessons from the Bowen Waterpark, implementing its successes and finding alternatives to anything that could be improved. “One thing we adapted is the material we built the park upon. At Bowen we noticed the soft fall surfaces were hard to maintain and would often erode or peel off in our harsh tropical climate. Learning from this, at Proserpine we used concrete under foot.

The current location creates a leisure area in Proserpine which incorporates the nearby caravan park and golf course along with the Council initiated free public swimming-pool and waterpark. Since the opening of the waterpark in August this year the Council have been excited to see the number of people come through the doors. “We have already seen record numbers with roughly ten times the amount signing in at the entrance to the public swimming-pool,” said Michael. Michael would like to thank all the contractors involved in the construction of the waterpark.

“People questioned this choice at first because it is seen as a hard surface that might hurt if you fall. It is, however, working out really well. The concrete is not slippery, it feels safe and secure on your feet and will be long-lasting,” said Project Manager Michael Downing.

Congratulations Whitsunday Regional Council on a successful 2018. We look forward to working with you again in 2019!

This was the first project delivered from the Proserpine Masterplan which was adopted in late 2017 and there are plenty of other negotiations going on behind the scenes with external stakeholders to activate other projects.

“There was an incredible amount of last minute work to do in order to meet a very tight deadline. In the last week the contractors were like an army of ants working around the clock to complete the project by deadline. “They did an amazing job and in the end we completed the project on-time and under budget which is something I am extremely proud of,” said Michael.

Breathing life into Airlie’s Foreshore

As the gateway to the world-famous Whitsunday Islands as well as being a popular tropical nirvana and backpacking paradise in its own right, Airlie Beach is unlike any other place in the world. As such, Whitsunday Regional Council are striving to be the best council in the world in an effort to ensure the popularity of Airlie grows to appeal to a broad tourism market.

This Airlie Beach Foreshore Revitalisation project is the result of community consultation. In 2016, the Airlie Beach community was asked to have their say on a proposal to revitalise the Foreshore area. Several options were presented to the public with suggested improvements to infrastructure, facilities and the ‘look and feel’ of the Foreshore.

Key features of the Revitalisation project:

An important part of this strategy is to ensure the visual appeal of Airlie Beach’s foreshore is enhanced while protecting the components of its iconic appeal, such as the markets.

After extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the community, Council endorsed Option A as the preferred option in January 2017, with the markets remaining in their popular location. The extensive consultation process included regular meetings with the Project Steering Committee, made up of key stakeholders in the community affected by the upgrade.

• Sound stage

Last year Council received $4.8 million in funding from the Queensland Government under the Building our Regions program, to begin working on a detailed design for the Foreshore. The $6.3 million project commenced earlier this year and will be completed by February 2019 (weather permitting), beautifying the public foreshore spaces between the Airlie Lagoon and Port of Airlie. The construction tender was awarded to Paynters. Mayor Andrew Willcox said once completed, the newly developed foreshore area will provide a place where residents and tourists can gather, attend events and relax in a high-quality seaside environment. “This will activate the Airlie Beach foreshore and improve connectivity along our attractive beach frontage via the Bicentennial Walkway.”

A revitalised Airlie Beach foreshore will improve liveability and amenity for the community, drive further economic development in the region, and increase services to the Airlie Beach markets and other similar events. Once complete, the project will add to the Airlie Beach tourism experience and will assist in boosting tourism growth and securing Airlie’s reputation as one of the most desirable holiday locations in Australia. OUR WHITSUNDAYS IS TAKING OFF We live in paradise. We already knew that, but more and more the rest of the world is beginning to catch on too. We don’t blame them, after all, the Whitsundays is home to the most beautiful beach in the world. But this steady increase of visitors does mean that infrastructure needs to be upgraded. Starting with our Whitsunday Coast Airport. As part of its quest to be the best council in the world, Whitsunday Regional Council has invested into the continual improvement and expansion of Whitsunday Coast Airport. Those of us who fly will understand the need for this, especially when simultaneous flights depart. The decision to upgrade the terminal is welcomed with record passenger numbers and six years of positive growth being experienced at the Whitsunday Coast Airport. There are five stages of the rolling masterplan for development of the airport complex for the long-term future, and the great news is, Stage 1 is almost complete, with contractors, Paynter Dixon Queensland expected to deliver the completed project by late December 2018.

SO, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? THE CONCEPT TERMINAL EXPANSION WILL INCLUDE: • Additional carparks • Additional toilets in baggage claim area • Provision of additional airside toilets in the expanded departure lounge • Doubling the size of the departure lounge to comfortably

accommodate people from two simultaneous flights • Interior designed new furniture, signage, carpet, tiles, wall paint and finishes • Reconfigured and expanded security screening area to allow for a future double lane of security screening • Relocation of secure departure lounge exit with pass back monitoring and alarm directly into baggage claim area to reduce congestion • Additional food and beverage seating areas • More than double the size baggage claim and arrivals area and adding a second baggage carousel • Expansion of the baggage make up to include a makeup loop with two loading positions and bypass lanes to allow for expedient loading of departing aircraft • Construction of relocated and expanded airport management offices, including an external emergency operations room On top of improving the capacity for more visitors and enhancing their arrival and departure experience, council estimates the project will support or create up to 100 local jobs, giving this region a massive economic boost. Whitsunday Regional Council would like to thank the Queensland State Government for funding the $15 million terminal expansion project. Without their valuable support, this project would not have been possible. Not only will this project benefit our local high-flyers, but also give visitors an enhanced experience and elevated first and last impressions while visiting our beautiful Whitsundays.

HIGH FLYER BRIAN JOINER When Brian Joiner left his role as Airport Manager in Karatha, WA, he relished the challenge offered to him in his new role as General Manager at Whitsunday Coast Airport. “When I took the role I knew there would be significant developments taking place and I felt excited by this challenge,” said Brian. Originally from Freemantle in WA, Brian has been in his current role for just over 12 months. When he was a child, he wanted to be a pilot but unfortunately, at exactly 7ft tall, his statuesque frame is just too tall for cockpit parameters. “When I was about 15 I realised I would never be a pilot, I was already too tall! This was a massive shake-up for me and it took me a long time to work out what I wanted to do,” said Brian. Fortunately, Brian harnessed his love for aircraft by becoming an air traffic controller and then moving into airport management roles. At the Whitsunday Coast Airport Brian is at the forefront of the expansion and is a very hand-on, ideas orientated leader. “Every time I go to a different airport I look at what they are doing and steal the ideas I like! I have used a clever carpet design from Alice Springs airport. “I also like considering the little things that enhance the customer experience, the taps, the toilets, the signage all create the overall impression. “We are also including a mural by a local indigenous artist on the wall.” Said Brian. The Whitsunday Coast Airport expansion is a flagship project to enhance the accessibility and connection for the whole region.

The Warren Transport story is a classic one of oldfashioned grit, determination, hard-work and a bit of the Aussie battler. The spirit which launched this company in 1991 is as strong now as it was more than 25 years ago, with owners John and Fiona having to roll up their sleeves to fix a safety issue that Main Roads didn’t want a bar of. “If you want something done, sometimes you just have to do it yourself.” It all started with a rundown Ford Louisville that John would strip-down in his backyard on weekends. It wasn’t long before the old girl was roadworthy, the first of many trucks to establish Warren Transport in 1991. John would cart almost anything, but large machinery became the company’s niche. It wasn’t long before an accumulation of machinery led to plant hire operations. In 2010, Warren Transport moved their business into a new workshop with an environmentally friendly focus to help protect the pristine environment we live in. Then in 2015, Warren Transport purchased Whitsunday Quarry on Shute Harbour Road. This wasn’t a foreign business concept for John and Fiona, who had already been a mobile crushing contractor with mobile plant hire. Putting a price on an old bed rock quarry seemed to be a sensible investment so they had a home for their gear. Fiona said that the area had room for another quarry and with a lot of TLC the quarry itself came together well. Unfortunately, the business inherited a safety problem with the purchase. “When we purchased the quarry site, we put the wheels in motion to improve the driveway. We went to Main Roads and asked to have the speed reduced due to dangerous access, but they refused this suggestion. “Given the access is a serious safety concern for our customers, the general public and our staff, we went back to Main Roads to see if they would assist with making the access safer, but they would not come to the party with that either,” she said. This is where John and Fiona decide to launch into action themselves. They feel that the blind access is an accident waiting to happen, so took it upon themselves to make the access safer for everyone in the Whitsundays who drives along Shute Harbour Road.

“Shute Harbour Road is getting busier, we knew we had to do something. In planning on how to make access safer, we had to purchase the house and block of land next door. Then came surveyors, engineers and a Main Roads accredited civil company to get the job done,” Fiona said. John and Fiona are pleased that after years of planning, the upgraded access is almost complete. “This has been our main focus since purchasing the quarry in 2015 to make it safer for the

general public, our clients and staff. We are pleased that construction is finally underway and should be finished before Christmas. We apologise to everyone who has been delayed due to interruptions of the speed limits during the construction, but the end result will be a safer piece of the road for everyone.” Whitsunday Quarry and Warren Transport wish their friends, family, clients and the Whitsunday community a safe and happy holiday season.

Creating A Sustainable Future Few industries are as rewarding as solar. It is one which aims to put money back into the pockets of its customers, one which supports the local community with cost-saving infrastructure and one which is playing a large part in saving the environment. At the forefront of leading solar technology in Mackay, the Whitsundays and Townsville, is Green Energy Technologies. Green Energy Technologies (GET) is passionate about empowering energy independence for generations while partnering with you to achieve long-term savings and control of your energy footprint through innovative solutions. Making these benefits available to the local community is driven by the desire to create a sustainable future for all, whether it be homes, business or community organisations. Established in Mackay in 2010, the local company has a proven history in solar system innovation throughout the local Mackay and Whitsunday regions, also servicing the regional QLD areas and mining communities. What started with two employees has grown in the last eight years to now employ over 21 full time staff, seven of these employees are qualified electricians, with five electrician apprentices. Since 2010 the business has grown from 150 installations a year to over 600 per year to date. The amount of GET customers has grown from 100 in 2010 to well over 3000 as at 30 June 2018. The solar company has been active in the Townsville market for the past three years and set up an office there in 2017 to further assist the North Queensland market.

As was the case for the majority of Whitsunday residents, 2017 and 2018 were challenging years for GET, with the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie. GET had already been working with the Whitsunday Regional Council prior to the cyclone and continued to work alongside the council in the wake of the natural disaster. Green Energy Technologies Director, Kon Flaherty, commented that the Whitsunday Regional Council (WRC) solar solution initial stage was one of their larger single solutions for 2017 into 2018. “We are proud to have worked in with WRC to deliver the assets onto buildings around and inline with cyclone works and requirements,” Kon said. “WRC and the Whitsunday region now have a multiple-site energy solution that delivers measurable savings as a common community asset. These savings will enable the WRC to deliver more and better services with the generation of these assets freeing up capital.” As a local company, GET has a strong commitment to the community through sporting and disability sponsorships, and donations. One of note in 2018 was 200kw to Proserpine Nursing Home (PNH). After the cyclone PNH upgraded to a full 200kw system with GET to deliver cost savings of almost 50% to their energy. GET not only provides high quality solar products and installs, it also offers ongoing service, maintenance and loyalty programs that are unique and second to none. In 2018 GET went through a rigorous process to become a CEC (Clean Energy Council) Approved Solar Retailer, signing onto the CEC Solar Retailer Code of Conduct.

Lou Grice, Operations Manager at GET, said ”this provides our customers assurance that they are buying a quality product from a company that follows all relevant consumer protection laws, and are prepared to back the operation of your solar system.” When other solar companies have been and gone, GET has stood the test of time. The difference? According to Lou, it is the fact that GET is focused on partnering with locals. “We do not see ourselves as a solar company. We see our mission as empowering energy independence for generations. We partner with you to achieve long term savings and control of your energy footprint through smarter solutions. One of those solutions is solar and we happen to be extremely good at that through our vision to deliver for you,” she said. It’s local knowledge and experience with CEC accredited installers that makes all the difference when choosing a solar package for your home or business. “We use our own in-house CEC accredited installers, who will not only be there at the time of initial install, but afterwards to provide support, allowing customers to maximise their solar system.” Having the installers able to clearly communicate with the customers is part of relationship building between the customer and GET.” Lou said. With the gift that keeps on giving, Green Energy Technologies are helping to create a brighter, more sustainable future for our community. When you’re ready to start saving on your power bill, give the team a call on 07 4940 2900, to find out how you can GET a better bill.

Developing A Dream Destination at Hamilton Island 2018 In 2018, Hamilton Island has played host to many major events and has seen some exciting developments. After a multimillion-dollar refurbishment, Hamilton Island’s Conference Centre was officially reopened in June. The new Conference Centre has created opportunity in the Business Events segment and signified Hamilton Island as the premier location for Business Events in the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island’s investment in Business Events facilities is continuing, with a planned upgrade to the Bougainvillea Marquee in 2019. The refurbished Conference Centre is an ideal venue for meetings, smaller expos and events for up to 700 guests, and is the largest conference venue in the Whitsunday region. Visitors to Hamilton Island are now able to explore more of the natural beauty of the Island following the development of a series of new walking trails, which opened earlier this year. Less than 25% of Hamilton Island has been developed and the new trails have created access to secluded beaches and previously undiscovered areas of the Island.

Throughout 2018, Hamilton Island has continued to host a series of worldclass events, including the Hamilton Island Endurance Series. The Endurance Series consists of the Stamford Financial Hilly Marathon, Whitehaven Beach Run, Hamilton Island Triathlon and Whitehaven Beach Swim. These events have been a wonderful opportunity for those living the region to push themselves in paradise and experience a different side of Hamilton Island. Hamilton Island’s largest annual event, Hamilton Island Race Week, was held between August 18 – 25 and attracted a fleet of over 230 boats. This fleet was the second largest on record and the competitive sailing was equally matched with an exciting onshore schedule that featured celebrity chefs such as Lennox Hastie (Firedoor), Neil Perry (Rockpool), Danielle Alvarez (Fred’s) and Helen Goh (Ottolenghi UK) who was the first international chef to ever be involved with the event. As we draw closer to the busy summer holidays period, Hamilton Island is looking forward to welcoming guests from around the region to experience all that the Island has to offer.

THE YEAR TAYLORS PROPERTY SPECIALISTS WAS BORN 2018 saw the Whitsunday real estate market expand with one of the biggest game-changers of the decade. With 17 years of local industry experience under his belt and a reputation for pioneering positive change, Rob Taylor stepped away from his position at an established firm to take on the challenge of building his own boutique real estate agency, TAYLORS Property Specialists. Six months on from the launch, we follow up with Rob and his wife Lauriely to see how business has been since he graced the cover of our May June edition in James Bond style.

HOW HAS YOUR FIRST SIX MONTHS IN BUSINESS BEEN?

WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS TO SO FAR?

“The progress so far has been great, it exceeded our expectations with the overwhelming response we have received. We are planning on starting our Property Management department earlier than anticipated and we have a new addition to our sales team to continue to provide the level of personalised service we are known for. First and foremost though, we wouldn’t have done it without overwhelming community support. It’s been very humbling for us,” Rob said.

“Without a doubt, it’s a major reflection of the team we have. We have become a tight unit and the culture within our business is more like family than colleagues. Their level of experience and passion for what they do is second-to-none,” Lauriely said.

WHAT WAS THE COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO ROB BEING ON THE COVER SIX MONTHS AGO?

WHAT HAS BEEN A POSITIVE MOMENT IN BUSINESS FOR YOU SO FAR?

“We are likely to expand as we are committed to providing that personalised boutique service. We would be keen to help a young person in the community build a career so will look at creating a position for a sales cadet. There will possibly be room for another experienced agent as well, as well as developing and growing the property management department. This will mean we will out-grow the office we are in currently, so this time next year it’s unlikely you will see us in the same spot. Watch this space!”

“It was fantastic! We had people picking the magazine up in places as far away as Brisbane and contacting us. We were amazed just how far it reached. We expected a bit of good-humoured ribbing about the cover, but were surprised with the opposite; the level of positivity and support it brought. The main reaction was, great marketing, great idea and most were very impressed, which was wonderful,” Lauriely said.

“We set out to establish a boutique agency where the focus is on service rather than sales. What has stood out for us is the positivity we have received regarding our branding and that we are being perceived as the boutique agency we intended. We have had the opportunity to forge our own path without restrictions from being an agency brand. This has allowed us to build a level of rapport and trust to a level I haven’t experienced in the industry before,” Rob said.

WHAT DOES NEXT YEAR HOLD FOR TAYLORS PROPERTY SPECIALISTS?

TAYLORS Property Specialists is located in the Whitsunday Business Centre. For expert real estate advice delivered with integrity, give the team a call to experience buying and selling the boutique way.

TH REE'S A CHARM

THE MEAT YOU LOVE IS NOW EVEN CLOSER TO MACKAY WITH MASTER BUTCHERS WHITSUNDAY’S NEWEST STORE LOCATED AT MARIAN. Opened in May, MBW at Marian delivers the same fantastic range of quality cuts of meat and award-winning sausages that can be found at their other two Cannonvale stores. Not only has the butcher shop been a welcome addition to Marian’s town centre, but co-owner, Karen Rix, has been humbled by the growing influx of customers making the trip from Mackay. “Our gourmet lines are proving very popular. We already had a growing fan base for our gourmet sausages and now our customers from the Mackay and Isaac regions have less distance to drive to stock up. Our pan-ready stir-fries and pre-made curries are a hit, just heat and

eat. Other gourmet lines are proving popular too as they are a bit different from the norm; pork loin stuffed with apple and cheese, chicken parmigiana, pinwheels with beef, lamb or pork and our chicken filo parcels. Our ready-to-bake pies are popular too,” she said.

The Marian store is brimming with experience with qualified butchers who really know their meat. The team consists of two qualified butchers, a third-year apprentice, a cook and a counter-staff member who are all passionate about providing great service.

One of the reasons MBW has won so many state and national awards for its products is because it favours local, quality meats delivering a farm-toplate experience.

Be sure to like the MBW at Marian Facebook page for weekly specials, and if you don’t need your receipt upon purchase, write your name and number on the back to be in the monthly draw for a $50 meat tray. Bulk buy offers are in-store as well as a great range of affordable meat packs.

“You can taste the difference in quality. We use body beef and pork from John McGill at Kuttabul and DK Faust at Proserpine, local eggs from Whitsunday Golden Yolk and Harveys Hatchery, local sauces and chutneys from One Hungry Momma plus of course our awardwinning Whitsunday Premium Maple Bacon, Ham and Kabana range all from Master Butchers Whitsunday,” Karen said.

Drop in for a browse, you’ll find MBW at Marian Town Centre on Anzac Ave, say Hi to the friendly team and put the sizzle back into your Saturday with meat you’ll love to eat.

Mackay Local

Hamish Wright

gets Podium Finish at Worlds THE THIRD TIME WAS THE CHARM FOR MACKAY’S HAMISH WRIGHT, WHO BROUGHT HOME HIS FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL FROM THE MASTERS TRACK CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LOS ANGELES LAST MONTH. The 2018 event was Wright’s third world championships and produced his best result, taking bronze in the Men’s 40 – 44 Sprint. Previously his best result had been a 5th placing in Manchester in 2015 in the Individual Time Trial. In the 2017 championships his best result was 9th in the Individual Time Trial and 11th in the Sprint. But instead of wanting to call it a day, it made the Masters track cyclist hungrier for a better result. “I knew I could do better, and I knew if I left it at that I would always wonder whether I could have stepped on that podium or not. As soon as I got home from that event, I made a plan for 2018,” he said. Wright describes a year of intense training with a focus on nutrition and a holistic approach to both his health and fitness. “I had a bit of weight to lose but as a sprinter it’s a delicate balance of stripping fat while

maintaining power. I can probably count the days that I didn’t train on one hand for the entire year. Any time I didn’t feel like getting on the bike, I remembered the phrase that keeps me motivated, and that’s ‘every day I don’t train, my competitors are training to beat me.’ I also worked on fixing my lower back problems with Dan from Peak Body Mechanics to make sure nothing was holding me back from exerting full power,” he said. The hard work paid off. In his first event, he placed 5th in the Individual Time Trial, equalling his result from Manchester three years ago. But it was in the sprint where he really shone. Wright qualified third fastest in the flying 200m with a personal best time of 11.012. He progressed to the quarter-finals comfortably beating his South African opponent in a one-off sprint. In the quarters, he faced an American and won two from two races to progress to the semifinals. In the semi’s, he faced the fastest rider of the competition, an American who would eventually take gold. Wright raced hard to win the second sprint to take it to a sudden-death decider. Unfortunately he was beaten in the third race, which put him into the bronze medal ride. His Swiss opponent for the bronze had been previously relegated due to unsafe riding

and unsportsmanlike behaviour, so Wright took the bronze when his opponent failed to show for the race. While stepping onto the podium was the goal for Wright, this success has made the desire for a world championship title even stronger. However, this plan may be temporarily put on hold as he and his wife, Amanda, are expecting their first child in June. “While the quest for world championships success has been a challenging journey, I’m anticipating that fatherhood will be a wild ride too. A world championships campaign is also financially straining, not only the trip across the other side of the world, but the constant travel for training and competition that is required to race at your best. I’m also lucky I have a great employer who is supportive in allowing me to fit work around my training schedule. Without that flexibility, these results just wouldn’t be possible.” While the world championships for 2019 may be off the cards, Wright will still be racing across the state at a number of regional carnivals and has the Masters National Track Cycling Championships in his sights, to bring home another Australian title. The Kiwi-born Mackay local won’t be hanging his bike on the rack until he loses the desire to race. www.corelife.com.au 41

KAYLEM

swings for success

Kaylem with his parents Rebecca and Paul Douthwaite

Kaylem at the NQ State Championships in Kingaroy

The State’s top golfing juniors will converge on the Gold Coast this December to compete for the 2018 Greg Norman Junior Golf Masters, an Australian Junior Ranking Event. It is for boys and girls under 18 years and amongst them will be Proserpine local, Kaylem Douthwaite.

“I'm so proud of Kaylem's achievements in qualifying. He played great golf in Ayr, his second round in particular would rank as one of the best rounds in the state this year for his age group. This is a great opportunity for Kaylem to compete with Queensland's best junior golfers,” Kane said.

What started as an exercise in hand-eye coordination is now becoming an exciting sporting opportunity for the year 7 student from Proserpine State High School. His father, Paul Douthwaite, bought him a plastic golf set at age two. A decade later and Kaylem’s swing landed him an invitation to play in a premier ranking event.

Kaylem is excited to have been invited to attend this prestigious event.

To qualify, he competed in the Karrie Webb Junior Open in Ayr and won the boy’s open division as the nett winner. He received an invitation to compete at the Masters via email from QLD Junior Golf the Monday after his win. At age 6, Kaylem was already playing golf with his Dad and his dad’s best mate, Jake. Dad and Jake taught Kaylem the rules and etiquette for the game, and the youngster was a natural from the start. His opening handicap of 18 at age 9 was an impressive way to enter the game. He has reduced that handicap to 15 and Dad has passed the coaching mantle onto PGA Professional, Kane Nusteling.

“I was so excited to receive an invitation to play at the Greg Norman Junior Masters. I knew I had to play the best two rounds of golf I have ever played to even get close to qualifying. There is such a strong field of junior players in our region and to make the cut is definitely the highlight of my golfing so far,” he said. This invitation follows what has been a successful few years for Kaylem. He has been the net winner at the Proserpine Junior Open three times and has been selected in the North Queensland team. At the state championships earlier this year, Kaylem finished in the top 15 gross in the state, a great achievement for his first major competition. The talented pre-teen also plays rugby league for Proserpine and has been selected in the North Queensland squad for the past two seasons. His parents couldn’t be prouder. Mum, Rebecca

commented; “Kaylem is headstrong and very competitive. To watch a 12-year-old play the gentleman’s game is amazing.” Dad agreed and commented; “Kaylem has the ability to hit shots from various situations you find yourself in golf with great confidence and skill. His short game when it’s on is extremely good and it won’t be long till he will be giving me a run for the money off the stick. Kaylem has one of those swings that you just stand back and admire and with a lot of practice he will become a great golfer.” Kaylem himself is relaxed about his future, taking the opportunity to enjoy each season as it comes. “I don’t really think about the future that much. I have a passion for both golf and rugby league. I love being part of a team and playing with my mates, and I also love that when I play golf it’s just me, the course and my own mind I am competing against. I love both sports and hope to play them both to the highest level I can for as long as I can.” WHO'S YOUR GOLFING IDOL AND WHY? “Rory Macroy! I love his game and his shot making ability. Rory leaves nothing in the bag when he hits a drive. He is exciting to watch.” www.corelife.com.au 43

REDHOTBLUE REVIEW 2018 is coming to a close as the silly season descends on us in full style. As redhotblue notched up 21 years on the calendar, we look back over our milestones and the year that was! Our social media engagement sky rocketed on all platforms and we were excited to reach over 1000 followers on Instagram! We also added 3 new staff members to the redhotblue family; Georgia - Office All-rounder, Jake - Graphic Designer and Teharnee – Marketing & Communications Officer. Jody, redhotblue Director, was asked to join the board of the Mackay Community Foundation and Mercy College Mackay, and redhotblue became sponsors again for the Mackay Regional Chamber of Commerce. We love giving back to the community we are part of and challenging the status quo, by living and breathing our motto ‘Create without Limitations’. We continued our partnership with the Nude Lunch Committee to pull off the incredible 3rd Annual Nude Lunch, Mackay’s largest off-site seated event with 800 people in attendance. Please check out the full feature in this edition of CORE Life Magazine for a recap of the Nude Lunch and where it all began! From the success and phenomenal feedback of the ‘Mad Hatter’ cover of CORE Life Magazine’s March/April edition, featuring our Director, Jody, redhotblue were contracted by CORE to create all magazine covers (concept development, art direction and design) moving forward. We were also tasked with developing the style and set of ‘The CORE COUCH’, filming and producing the interview of the current cover personality. Redhotblue looks forward to continuing our collaboration with CORE into 2019! Throughout the year we have thoroughly enjoyed working with all clients, from small start-ups through to national companies. To mention a few:

We continued our strong working relationship with Xcel Properties, having developed all brand and marketing campaigns for over a decade. We partnered with Mader Group in 2018 for an advertising campaign that has had overwhelmingly positive feedback, crossing state lines and increasing staff recruitment. The incredibly successful campaign has since been used for social media graphics, print ads and digital screens. We’re looking forward to more jobs in the pipeline for this company. After working with Mastermyne on many award winning campaigns for nearly a decade, redhotblue are excited to be working on a completely new strategic direction for their advertising and marketing - stay tuned for more details. Greg Neill & Son moved their account to redhotblue in 2017, where we launched a new campaign ‘The Art Of’... The client has commented on the incredible success of this campaign in sales turnaround and brand awareness, firmly cementing their reputation in the jewellery industry. We’re excited to see this campaign evolve further in 2019. Brenden from Active Blends came to redhotblue with an existing small business model in early 2018, with the dream of opening a physical shop in Sydney Street. We consulted with him on set up, re-brand and roll out of all marketing materials, and are thrilled to be working with him on the opening of a second shop at Parkside! If you want to take leaps and bounds forward in 2019, you need to speak with the company with a proven track record of walking the walk, and talking the talk. Not only will redhotblue go above and beyond to make your business look incredible, we’ve got the trophy’s on the wall to prove it! Jody and the team at redhotblue would like to thank all our clients, existing and new, for walking through our studio doors and allowing us to do what we do best! Here’s to an even bigger, better, more creative and successful 2019!!

THERE FROM THE BEGINNING. Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd (DBCT P/L) is known in the Mackay community for its generous sponsorship program and as a good corporate citizen. In amongst the $300,000 plus DBCT P/L provides to the community, the Nude Lunch partnership stands apart. While many of the sponsorship applications are submitted by third parties looking to hold an event or to secure funding for their community organisation, the first contact regarding the Nude Lunch came from a company employee, Damian Crowley, Trudy’s husband. At the time, not Damian, nor the PR Team at DBCT P/L, could have predicted where this simple email requesting support would lead. DBCT P/L Senior Specialist Public Relations, Sharon Johnston, said while the Nude Lunch sponsorship proposal offered great return on investment, it also offered the opportunity to support someone in the Daly Bay family. “Over the years we have watched the Nude Lunch grow, and our support of the event has grown with it, both in monetary contribution and with the gifts we provide to guests.” “This year we had Trudy in mind when we ordered Champagne glasses, and our 2019 gift got Trudy’s seal of approval earlier this year.”

Sharon said she envisaged an enduring relationship with the Nude Lunch, with the company already locked-in as presenting partner in 2019, as well as helping start the new Junior Nude Lunch, which focuses on educating the next generation of girls about ovarian cancer. “Trudy touched so many people’s lives, and the Nude Lunch is striking a chord with so many people. “I feel very privileged to have been part of Trudy’s journey with the Nude Lunch as I got to attend interviews with her, and hear her story up close and personal.”

BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION. Giving back to the local community is something that MI Scaffold is passionate about, actively seeking avenues to support local causes and creating positive change within the local area. Directors John Van Polen, Barry Gudgeon and Darren Beale have more than 75 year combined industry experience. The 3 original directors built the business from the ground up, laying foundations for success back in 2012. Back then MI scaffold started with a small crew of 18 employees, working on the Mt Carlton gold mine construction project. Over the years they have become known as a stable, family-orientated employer who provide a great work environment and roster system that maintains excellent staff morale. They pride themselves in offering job opportunities within our local community and look after their employees like family. Now employing over 100 staff between their Mackay and Gladstone branches, MI Scaffold is in a position to help community causes in our local area. “A large part of the organisation is to give back to our community through sponsorship and charity events. We are proud sponsors of the Nude Lunch, and have sponsored the Ronald McDonald House for five years. Along with Tincone, ABC Engineering, Geah Services and Explore Property, we have recently purchased a bus for the

Other local charities MI Scaffold are involved with include QLD Police Legacy, Canteen for Cancer Awareness, Black Dog Foundation for suicide awareness and the 4 U2 Concert in Moranbah which raises funds for the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter. They also sponsor many local sporting teams such as the Mackay Magpies, Sarina BMX Club, Sarina Netball and the Eastern Swans, just to name a few. Each year, the staff at MI Scaffold enjoy attending the Nude Lunch and are honoured to support this worthy local charity, raising awareness and assisting families affected by Ovarian Cancer.

BANKING ON THE COMMUNITY BOQ Mackay City is proud to have been the Teal Sponsor of the Nude Lunch since inception. Over the years owners, Melissa and Jason Green have enjoyed inviting their clients, family and friends to the Nude Lunch as guests and have been pleased when they have, in-turn, become advocates of the event themselves. For Melissa and Jason, supporting this local event stemmed from a personal connection with Founder and Director Trudy Crowley who passed away from ovarian cancer in September. “I have known Trudy for many years. We generally caught up on each other’s lives, laughing in the corner at a networking function with a glass of bubbles. I loved the direct way we spoke to each other, always with care and respect,” said Melissa. “The unintended legacy of the Nude Lunch is that her grandchildren will grow up with an unfiltered version of who she was and the impact she had on not only her family but the Mackay and greater community.” Melissa loves how the event brings all sections of the community together to unite over a common cause. “In this world of technology people have never been more isolated and an event like the Nude Lunch brings a sense of connectedness to each other,” she said.

15117_CORE Life Mag-Nov-Dec_V2.pdf_57of100

The sense of community created by the Nude Lunch has brought many businesses together and united people from across the region giving a sense of pride in supporting a worthy cause and showing those affected by ovarian cancer that they are not alone. “Trudy showed us what courage looks like, to ask for help when we need it. It has been truly special to help Trudy and the Nude Lunch team raise money to care for those who have ovarian cancer and their families and spread the message about the symptoms,” said Melissa. If you would like to become a sponsor go to nudelunch.com.au for full details.

FAMILYMATTERS

Join the Fight to Protect Our Kids Child abuse and neglect is one of Australia’s biggest and most misunderstood social problems. Despite being under-reported, Australian authorities confirmed 49,315 children were abused or neglected in one year alone.

That’s one child every 11 minutes suffering physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect, often by someone they know and should be able to trust; most often in their own home. Thousands more cases go unreported, and the number of children and young people in out-of-home care is increasing. To provide help for these families, Act for Kids was established 30 years ago providing free therapy and support services to children and families who have experienced, or are at risk of child abuse and neglect. The Australian Charity now operates over 26 centres with a team of over 350 staff from Adelaide to the Cape York Peninsula, helping over 40,000 kids and families last year. In June 2016 Act for Kids opened a centre in Mackay which operates as a Family and Child Connect service covering the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsundays communities.

“We are like a friendly yellow pages for families that need help,” said Kelly Sutton from Act for Kids Mackay.

“Our practitioners have meaningful conversations with families who are experiencing challenging times. Family and Child Connect then support these families to create sustainable connections enabling them to access services that they may not be aware of.”

Family and Child Connect can speak with families face to face or via telephone. They can provide information, advice and/or referral pathways to a range of support systems which offer therapy services, family intervention, educational assistance, safe houses and much more. If you or someone you know is struggling to cope within their family dynamic reach out to Act for Kids Mackay and see how they can connect you to the help and resources you need. If you would like to help, you can become a Kids Crusader and make a monthly donation to help children that have experienced abuse or neglect. Donations can be as little as $5 a week. Go to www.actforkids.com.au for full details.

If you believe a child is in immediate danger or in a life-threatening situation, please contact the police immediately by dialling 000

Kelly and Olivia SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT • Distrust or wariness of adults • Extreme behaviour – aggressive, submissive, anxious, distressed • Low self-esteem, being withdrawn or having difficulty relating to adults or other children • Being overly obedient and trying hard to please • Difficulty concentrating • Excessive rocking, humming, sucking or biting • Bedwetting, frequent nightmares or sleeping difficulties (seeming tired and falling asleep at unusual times) • Seeming to be ‘accident prone’ or having unexplained bruises or injuries at different stages of healing • Explanations for injuries that are unbelievable, vague or don’t align with the type of injury • Not wanting to go home • Creating stories or artwork about abuse • Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behaviour for the age and development of the child WHAT TO DO IF A CHILD DISCLOSES ABUSE OR NEGLECT TO YOU • Listen to them • Tell them you believe them • Reassure them they have done the right thing in telling you • Don’t tell them you won’t tell anyone, explain that you want to protect them and what you will do next, that you may need to tell someone else who will be able to help (the child may be fearful of getting in trouble for telling, but it’s important not to lie to them, they need to be able to trust you) • Don’t confront their parents or abuser • Make written notes about everything the child told you, and contact your local child protection authorities.

FAMILYMATTERS

ARE YOU SEPARATING FROM YOUR PARTNER OR GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE? Chances are you are being bombarded with plenty of advice from friends or family who have been through separations of their own. As well-meaning as the advice usually is, it is very important to remember that no two families are the same and likewise no two separations are the same either.

WE’VE SHED SOME LIGHT ON A FEW OF THE MOST COMMON FAMILY LAW “MYTHS” ONCE MY CHILD TURNS 12, THEY CAN DECIDE WHERE THEY WANT TO LIVE…

I’M NOT ENTITLED TO MY EX’S SUPERANNUATION BECAUSE I HAVEN’T CONTRIBUTED TO IT…

FACT: There is no specific age. The court takes into account many factors when deciding who a child will live with, including the child’s level of maturity and whether their views appear to be independent or influenced by one or both parents. The most important factor a court will consider is what is best for the child, not necessarily what the child thinks or says they “want”.

FACT: Superannuation is always taken into account when considering a property settlement and, even if you haven’t contributed “directly” to your spouse’s superannuation, chances are you have contributed “indirectly”. For example, you may have stayed home and cared for the children while your spouse worked and therefore your contribution as a carer for your children would be considered a contribution to the overall property pool as it enabled your spouse to work (and therefore accrue superannuation).

MY EX AND I AGREE SO WE DON’T NEED TO SEE A LAWYER… FACT: Often, it is when you and your ex agree that is actually the best time to see a lawyer and have your agreement formalised rather than waiting for a dispute to arise down the track. Also, even if you and your ex agree, you may still need court orders prepared in circumstances where one of you will be keeping a jointly owned property, or you have agreed to a superannuation split.

In any family law matter, it is important to get advice that is specific to your particular situation. Whitsunday Law’s family lawyer, Sarah Smith, offers initial consultations for only $220.00 (incl. GST). Phone 07 4948 7000 or email sarah.smith@whitsundaylaw.com.au to see how she can help with your family law matter.

Living on the

Spectrum

T

ia was three years old when she was diagnosed with a form of high-functioning Autism, which was known as Asperger’s back then. It was hard for her family to understand Tia’s behavioural issues because she was so bright, if not advanced in many other ways. She could speak well from a young age but would find it hard to say hello to people. She could dress herself, but the idea of choosing an outfit could trigger a meltdown which would see her on the floor kicking her feet hysterically for an hour. “She would have constant meltdowns,” said her mum, Jody. “This was nothing unusual for a two-yearold, but they tended to be extreme and would last for a long time before she could calm down. Often it appeared to be over the most unexpected thing - a different dinner plate being used to the normal Dora the Explorer design or putting socks on, which we later discovered was linked with the sensory component of Autism when anxiety is heightened.” In an effort to understand her daughter and what she believed was something more than simply terrible two’s, Jody embarked on a journey of discovery which at times felt very lonely and overwhelming.

After numerous dead ends and comments about her simply being a strong-minded child, Jody attended a workshop in Brisbane lead by world renowned expert on Aspergers Syndrome, Professor Tony Attwood. Finally, it all started to make sense. Since then, Jody has invited Tony Atwood to Mackay twice to a full-house of parents and professionals all wanting to know more. Tia was diagnosed by the team at Minds and Hearts in Brisbane in December 2009 and for the years that followed Jody and Tia flew to Brisbane on a regular basis, sometimes every week for months on end to participate in a variety of programs. “I cannot stress highly enough how important early intervention is,” said Jody. “As a parent we have the ability to make a real difference. It might be relentless hours of repetition and hard work but it is so vital. You have a window of opportunity, so don’t wait. Tia is now 12 years old, and is exceeding all expectations, not that we ever had any!” Jody believes this is a result of the strategies her and her husband put into place at a young age and the support mechanisms they have established. They have worked alongside Tia’s school and use a mixture of visual cues and sensory breaks to allow Tia to function happily

within her school community. “Every year of primary school I wrote a book for Tia’s teachers to give them the tools they needed to help support her learning. These strategies along with a close working relationship and open lines of communication with the learning support department have been vital. To know one child with Autism, is exactly that – one child. They are all different so it’s about working together for the best outcome for the child,” said Jody. One of Tia’s biggest challenges in life has been clothing. How they feel and deciding on what to wear often would overwhelm her, so when we find something she likes we literally buy ten pairs!” Laughs Jody. When Tia is struggling to communicate with words Jody initiates comic strip conversations. This is a technique where a stick person/people are drawn with a speech bubble allowing conversation to happen without verbal exchange. This method takes the focus off Tia and onto the paper, so it is easier for her to communicate. Showing affection is something people on the Autism Spectrum often find uncomfortable. Fortunately, Tia has a little sister called Piper, with a heart of gold, who has shown her how to show love. One of their greatest ways to learn is through observation. “Through watching Piper, Tia now gives us a hug from time to time, but she prefers no kisses. She thinks they’re yucky! She’d sooner show her love through writing me a letter and placing it under my pillow,” said Jody.

Powered by Family With his family’s future firmly in mind, Troy Murphy made a series of decisions which would lead to paradise. He left Sydney with a young family in search of a warmer and safer climate to raise his children. Arriving in the Whitsundays in the late 90’s, he worked as an electrician for local contractors before starting his own business a decade later in 2009. He always had a vision to be self-employed to pave a path of success for his children, so he founded Powered by Murphy Electrical & Air-conditioning Pty Ltd. As soon as his sons, Brent and Liam, were old enough to be walking around work sites, they were shadowing him at work. They worked with their dad in school holidays and both found their passion as electricians, leaving school as soon as they could to study the trade. Liam commented, “Growing up watching our father work taught us from a very young age to develop a hard work ethic and customer service. I clearly remember dad telling me when I was 12 years old, ‘If you take pride in your work, do your very best and work hard, people will talk and

that’s how you grow your business son.’ Still to this day I stick by that phrase as does all our staff we train and employ.” Troy and his sons, Brent and Liam, are joined by Troy’s stepsons Jerome and Taylor Jones. Brent is the electrical supervisor and the insurance and disaster management supervisor. Liam and Jerome are both fourth-year apprentices and Taylor is a trades assistant. The past year presented heftier challenges than the business had faced previously in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie. The business hired additional staff to help customers as soon as possible and were working the day following the cyclone to assist with safety requirements. “Our number one priority when TC Debbie hit was attending to regular customers first, we managed to succeed in this department as local customers and builders are what build our company from the ground up. A huge credit has to go to our admin team as paperwork went through the roof during storm season. We are proud to say we have completed more than 2000 jobs relating to Cyclone Debbie and still counting,” Troy said. Powered by Murphy is dedicated almost

entirely to the domestic and commercial market in our regional areas. With a staff of 13, it has the ability to offer locals quick efficient service at reasonable prices supplied by experienced staff. Troy commented, “We pride ourselves on our service; fast and efficient, completing works in a safe and timely manner. It’s all about building trust. We are proud to have served most local builders who have continued to use us in the past 9 years. We drive around new estates in the local area and look at our achievements and are proud to say we have completed most new homes in the area.” The business services local homes and businesses as well as commercial premises and schools. All employees of Powered by Murphy have Blue Cards, allowing them to work in environments around children. The team take their role in the community seriously, and like doctors, understand that people’s lives depend on the quality execution of their work. As well as a commitment to excellence in service, giving back to the community which they raised their children in has been a cornerstone of Powered by Murphy. Starting

A Community minded Business with opportunities for younger members of the community, the business offers a number of apprenticeship opportunities to give youth a qualified trade and career. “At one stage last year we had six apprentices on the books.” The Murphy family is big on sport and have been regular contributors to a number of sporting organisations throughout the community, including Junior Rugby League and Senior Rugby league, Whitsunday Netball Association, Junior Golf and Proserpine State Schools; just to name a few. Until Brent was old enough to start sport, work was Troy’s main hobby. Then came mornings of soccer and rugby league. Still to this day, Troy is at every senior rugby league game

watching his sons and step-sons play; whether it’s a home game or in Mackay. Some weekends it’s a double trip to Mackay with netball for his younger daughter on a Saturday and the boys’ rugby league on Sunday. Brent has recently retired from rugby league and is relocating to Brisbane to expand Powered by Murphy further up the East Coast. Liam, Jerome and Taylor all play for the Whitsunday Brahmans. Troy manages a little time for himself now the kids are taking care of themselves, and enjoys spending time on his Ford 1955 Custom Line. He’s a passionate Blues supporter, loves to smack a golf ball around from time to time and plays darts every Tuesday at the Jubilee Tavern.

Act on hearing loss today! Scientific consensus shows that addressing hearing loss earlier leads to better long-term outcomes. Let’s start with one shocking statistic... seven years. That’s the average time it takes for someone to address their hearing loss. Why is it better to get on top of hearing loss sooner rather than later? Hearing loss can have an effect in five areas of your life, and if you can avoid these effects, so much the better for you. Mental health More and more studies, including one by John Hopkins Medicine, has connected untreated hearing loss with mental decline, including increased anxiety and depression, accelerated brain shrinkage, and even dementia. This is probably the scariest of the outcomes and there’s still a lot of research to be done. But if we can reduce the chance or severity of mental decline by addressing hearing loss, we’d

say that would be a positive outcome. Physical health Research has shown that people with untreated hearing loss are three times as likely to have a fall as people without. Yes, falls do become more prevalent as people get older as does the prevalence of hearing loss. But simply treating that hearing loss reduces your chances of falling by two thirds. And as we know, the repercussions of falls become more and more severe the older we get. Income and career This was a surprise to me as well… but untreated hearing loss can affect your income and your career. Studies have shown people with untreated hearing loss on average earn less than those without, and were also nearly twice as likely to be unemployed. Hearing

loss is affecting people at a younger age so it is no longer something that should be left to be worried about at a later stage. Personal safety This is self-evident. If you can’t hear it you can’t avoid it! Relationships and social interactions Many complaints about hearing loss come not from the sufferers, but from their partners. The inability to engage, to follow the conversation, or to simply withdraw is a big concern and can have a dramatic impact on relationships. We joke about “selective hearing” but in the end the joke wears thin and frustration sets in and can fester.

HEARING HEALTH WITH GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing + Balance

Depending on the level and type of hearing loss your audiologist can then make recommendations on how you can best help your hearing. These options may include some simple situational listening strategies, assistive listening devices eg headphones and the like for some situations, hearings aids, or a combination of all three. It’s a small effort to make for what can potentially be a huge gain in the future.

So how do I take action? It’s as simple as getting your hearing clinically assessed by a qualified audiologist.

A Healthy

Smile A Healthy

Child

Looking after our teeth is one of the most important principals to pass onto our children. Our teeth are not only the method by which we enjoy eating a wide variety of food and project our beautiful smiles to the world, they are also an indication of the broader health of our bodies. Having a healthy set of teeth signals that the rest of our bodies are healthy too. For children, it is important that we instil good oral hygeine habits from an early age. By developing these habits early on they will not only grow up with healthy teeth and gums, they are also more likely to keep these good habits throughout their teenage years and into adulthood.

TOP 10 TIPS

6. Try to introduce the use of a cup from about 6 months of age.

FOR CHILDREN’S TEETH

1. Encourage children to brush their own teeth but supervise and assist them at least once a day until they are about eight. If bacteria have been on the teeth for a long time, the gums may bleed when brushed. This gingivitis tells you that the gums are unhealthy. To get them healthy again the gums need to be cleaned more often, even if they bleed when brushed. 2. Brush children’s teeth as soon as they appear. Start off by giving your baby a small toothbrush as a toy at bath time. If your child is under 18 months brush their teeth without toothpaste and from 18 months to 4 yrs brush your children’s teeth with a small pea size amount of low fluoride toothpaste. 3. Use dental floss daily from about 3-4 years of age. 4. Encourage children to drink water and some plain milk as their regular drinks. Drink fluoridated water every day and limit the drinking of soft drinks and fruit juices.

Dr Prashant, owner of Smilemakers Whitsunday with his beautiful family

5. Avoid putting infants and young children to bed with a bottle. Make sure feeding has finished before your child goes to sleep to avoid early infant tooth decay.

7. Do not add sugar to encourage fussy eaters. The main cause of tooth decay is an acid attack on the surfaces of the teeth. This acid is produced by bacteria which cling to the surface of the teeth in a film called dental plaque. Sweet, sticky, sugary foods help the plaque to make acid which causes tooth decay and bleeding gums. 8. Discourage bad habits before they get worse. Dummies, thumb sucking and nail biting can alter the growth and development of the mouth and teeth. If you have to use a dummy, do not dip it into sugary foods like honey. 9. Put only breast milk, water or formula in your baby’s bottle. 10. Take your child for their 1st dental visit soon after their first birthday which allows your child to become familiar with the place and people. Some families are eligible for to up to $1,000 in benefits for dental services over two calendar years. Children between 2 and 17 could be eligible under the Commonwealth’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule. To find out if you are too, call Medicare.

e l i m S it’s good for you! DID YOU KNOW THAT SMILING CAN BOOST YOUR MOOD WHEN YOU’RE FEELING BLUE? The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness. Research shows that smiling, or seeing a smile, is contagious and can stimulate happy thoughts, even if you're not feeling particularly blissful at the time. Our facial expressions have a greater impact on our lives than you might have thought. So, before you read on, slap a nice, genuine smile on that face of yours. You’ll thank us later! Reduce stress - Smiling releases endorphins, and endorphins make people happy. They also counteract and diminish cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Improves cardiovascular health – With lowered stress comes improved cardiovascular health. Smiling relaxes the body, thereby slowing a person’s heart rate. Kick anxiety to the curb - Studies report that smiling can lower your heart rate.

The next time you need to calm down, put a smile on your face. Look happy, look younger - Forget the expensive wrinkle creams; turns out, smiling may be the only anti-aging prescription you need. Smile for success - Could grinning be the key to success in your career and relationships? Indeed, research has found that happy, smiling people may thrive better in the workplace and at home. Strengthen your immunity - The more endorphins we get from smiling and the more we reduce our stress, the easier it is for our immune systems to keep us healthy. Our cells become less rigid when we are less stressed, and this makes quicker paths for our immune response cells to react to pathogens and other threats to our health. It can even lower our chances of getting cancer by reducing the number of stressinduced mutations in our cells! SO, WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM SMILING MORE OFTEN? Crooked teeth can be a hindrance to your health if it stops you from grinning. If it’s

something you’ve lived with for many years, you may be in the frame-of-mind that it’s just a part of who you are. But it doesn’t have to be. Long-gone is the need to have ‘traintrack’ braces. Orthodontic treatment has progressed in leaps and bounds within the last decade. Now, there are clear braces which can barely be seen, or Invisalign®, where you don’t have to show your braces while your smile is being corrected. Interest free payment plans and tailor-made treatments make these options a more obtainable solution. Braces 4 U are based in Mackay, Cannonvale and Bowen and are a local Invisalign® Platinum Provider. The virtually invisible solution for very visible results. Now that’s something to smile about! If you have always wanted beautiful straight teeth without wearing conventional braces, you should consider Invisalign® with Dr Rosario Rodriguez. A consultation at Braces 4U can determine if Invisalign® is right for you.

ALL OF US AT BRACES 4U WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HOPE, JOY, AND ABUNDANCE We thank you for our relationship. With gratitude, we wish you a happy holiday season and a New Year full of smiles and laughter.

ENHANCEMENT EXPERTS Your face is a precise form of art; when choosing a plastic surgeon you would undoubtedly seek a Manet over a Picasso. Like many activities in life, the best medical professionals have natural talent and advanced skills for their passion. Dr. Mark Vucak and Shona Great RN are two such people, with fastidious attention to detail and a desire for perfection; their experience has garnished a reputation for excellence in the cosmetic and surgical industries. Dr. Vucak established Queensland Plastic Surgery in 1994 and is one of four surgeons providing a range of cosmetic and corrective enhancements at the practice. After eight years of general surgery and plastic surgery training, he completed his cosmetic fellowship at Emory University and Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia where he was under the supervision and guidance of six of America’s best plastic surgeons. This is where his interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery was kindled. Having studied and performed surgery across many parts of the world, Dr. Vucak is experienced in all areas of plastic and reconstructive procedures, although he takes a special interest in facial work and breast augmentation. He is committed to providing clients with personalised care whilst aiming to naturally enhance and improve appearance. To compliment the services offered by Queensland Plastic Surgery, he opened Chrysalis Medispa, offering medical grade skin care and cosmetic injectables. This clinic in Townsville is

the only one of its kind to have the guidance of a plastic surgeon to offer the best results possible. Originally from Ayr, Shona joined the Chrysalis team in 2011 when returning home to North Queensland after years of nursing overseas. She graduated from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Nursing Science in 1995 and spent the next two years gaining nursing experience in Brisbane before taking the opportunity to travel. Shona worked in various nursing settings, before specialising in surgical theatre nursing at Moorefields Eye Hospital, London. In 2005 she joined a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at his prestigious clinic in central London. It was the start of what has now become her passion. “I believe that ageing shouldn’t be viewed as a negative aspect of our lives. It can bring wisdom, experience and grace. It is our body’s nature to age, however to soften those effects, and age well, is something achievable to all,” Shona said.

Dr Mark Vucak and RN Shona Great Despite being located in Townsville, Mark and Shona regularly travel to Mackay for surgical and non-surgical procedures. Mark has a long-standing reputation for performing surgery locally and Shona holds clinics for injectable procedures. Under the prescription of Dr. Mark Vucak, Shona will see you for your cosmetic nonsurgical treatments. She is happy to meet with you to answer any of your injectable and skin rejuvenation questions. Qld Plastic Surgery has treated more than 45,000 patients since opening its doors in 1994. The clinic offers a wide range of procedures from breast and facial surgery to cosmetic, body contouring and reconstructive surgery. It also has extensive experience in skin cancer, especially of the face, as well as melanoma in all parts of the body. Hair :

BEFORE

by Wiktoria Alexandersson and Kailee Potters

AFTER

Make me Over!

Isla’s hair was a perfect canvas to work with, it was very long and had only minimal colour through the ends of her hair. Isla said ‘You can do whatever you want with it’ so Wik decided to go for a big change. Cutting all of the previous colour off Isla’s ends and creating a beautiful lengthy bob really worked well with Isla’s face shape and instantly made her hair feel so much fresher and healthier. Wik then mixed up some powder lightener and Olaplex to protect Isla’s hair and did a full head of fine weaved foils leaving them off the roots so that Isla’s natural colour was left to give her depth around her face and make it easier for Isla when her hair started to grow out. Focusing around the front of her face, some babylights were added so that area was lighter and brighter to make that section the focal point of her hair. Once the colour was rinsed and shampooed we gave Isla a pre-toning treatment and proceeded to tone her hair with an 8 level natural ash colour with a dot of violet using our Davines colour range. Isla’s style was finished off with a Davines Milk Spray to protect her hair from the heat of the stying products and a Pure Shaping Serum for hold. Her hair was then blow dried and we made those beautiful brushed out waves with a Muk Curling Wand.

Makeup :

By Kailee Potter When deciding on what makeup look I should do for Isla I asked her a few simple questions to determine what type of makeup look would suit her best while making her still feel comfortable and beautiful. Isla is in her mid-teens and rarely wears makeup so keeping her look very fresh and youthful was important. Elk House of Hair stocks a large range of Youngblood makeup products, so I started Isla’s makeup by applying a Youngblood Primer over her entire face and while that settled to her skin I worked her eyebrows and started on her eyeshadow. Isla has a naturally golden glow to her skin, so I stuck with the warmer tones when creating her eye look by choosing mostly coppers and golds. I then applied some natural looking eyelashes and a touch of Youngblood Liquid Eyeliner on the top of her eyelids. I then moved onto her skin by applying light concealer under her eyes and Youngblood Golden Tan Liquid Foundation and finished her base with Youngblood Translucent Powder. I kept her golden glow by applying the Sundance Mineral Radiance Bronzer over her cheeks and above the top of her face to slightly contour and blend the colour. I used the lightest colour in the Sundance Mineral Radiance Bronzer to highlight the top of her cheek bones and the tip of her nose and Cupid’s bow. One of the last steps was to apply the Youngblood Blackout Mascara on her bottom lashes and a Light Brown Youngblood Eyeliner Pencil on her bottom eyelids. I prefer to do this last so that I’m not smudging any mascara when working her foundation. Finishing Isla’s whole look off with a Soft Nude Youngblood Lip Pencil and Youngblood Blushing Nude Lipstick.

Finding the

n i h t i W r e t Figh With Whitsunday Martial Arts

When Chris Smith’s wife announced she had booked him into an eight-week fitness challenge with Whitsunday Martial Arts, he knew he had to do this for her and for his kids. “I was too proud to say no,” laughs Chris. “I was 37 years old and had made poor lifestyle choices by being a smoker and letting myself get overweight. I looked at my kids and thought – you can either sit back and watch your life go by or you can turn it round for the better.” And so, he did! 22 weeks ago Chris was 125.8kg and he is now 95kg, losing a mighty 31.8kg! Originally from Adelaide, Chris went to school in the Whitsundays for three years when he was a teenager before moving back to Adelaide and learning his trade as a floor sander. He moved back to the area with his wife when qualia was being built and has enjoyed a steady stream of work ever since. Running his own business means he works long hours and often

travels away so it had been hard for him to commit to a fitness regime.

norm, if I don’t go, I almost crave a workout!” said Chris.

Then, in October this year, after 16 years together and two children, Chris and his wife decided to get married.

His coaches couldn’t be more impressed by Chris’ commitment.

“That was a big motivator to lose weight,” said Chris. “I wanted to wear a suit and feel good in it!” Inspired by his family and upcoming wedding Chris dedicated himself to a tough fitness regime. Coaches and Mentors, Dan Zealand and Anton Zafir from Whitsunday Martial Arts (WMA), worked him hard and demanded he gave 100%. “The hardest part is getting yourself there. Once you’ve done that, the rest is easy,” said Chris. Attending 6 personal training sessions a week, which included boxing, martial arts and running 12km on every Sunday, Chris barely missed a day. “Now working out every day almost becomes the

“I have to commend Chris on his level of dedication to changing his life. To Chris’ credit, he took opportunities to train late evenings or early mornings simply to squeeze in his commitments. Chris proved us wrong in that if we told him to train, even when he was travelling for work, he did and furthermore often sent us video proof of his work!” Said WMA Coach Anton Zafir. After months of hard work and dedication, cutting out the four iced-coffees and other soft drinks he used to drink each day and swapping them for protein, salad and lots of eggs, Chris started to see the scales creep down. “A big milestone for me was getting under the 100kg mark. I hadn’t been less than this since I was 17 years old! I celebrated by doing a skydive which is something I had been too big to try before,” said Chris.

He’d made his family proud and has become a newly motivated, confident individual in every aspect of his life.

Chris on his wedding day

“Chris has set a great example for his family to show how much of a change can happen with the right amount of dedication. It is clear that his love for health & fitness has taken firm hold and I’m excited to see what another few months of training brings,” said WMA Coach Dan Zealand. On the 24th November this year, keen to complete the ‘first round’ of his new life story, Chris will be competing in a fight in front of a crowd of strangers, family and friends at the Reef Gateway Hotel. His challenger has also lost a significant amount of weight and has a similar background as himself so Chris finds himself both excited and anxious but totally prepared. He has been in ‘fight camp’ at WMA for the last eight weeks and is totally focussed on kicking this final goal. “I’m not going to lie, I am totally outside of my comfort zone here but I will give it 100%. To me, it’s not a fight, it’s a sport and I am looking forward to putting into practice everything I’ve learnt. Competing is what’s important to me and I am looking forward to that most,” Chris said. Chris would like to thank Dan and Anton from WMA and commend them for training him hard, accepting nothing less than 100%. He is grateful to everyone at WMA who are like family to him and would recommend this supportive community to anyone looking to get fit and overhaul their lifestyle in a positive way.

T HER WAY TO FORTY “Sometimes I can’t believe it’s me looking back from the mirror.”

What was the most difficult habit you had to overcome and how do you manage it now?

release her stress in the gym; punching, wrestling and choking people.

“I remember wanting to be her; fitter, stronger and healthier.”

“When you have spent the best part of five years stuck in an unhealthy cycle, you manage to pick up many bad habits. A bottle, sometimes two, of red wine would help me sleep and forget about work and life for a few hours. This was my go-to at 5pm most days. With the hangover the next day came the depression and unhealthy eating choices. For one to change they all had to change, but it needed to start with a shift in my thinking. To shift meant I had to move! So, I did, I moved off the couch and into WMA. Now my go to at 5pm is a conditioning circuit and not the bottle shop!”

“What has surprised me the most is how well Bec has taken to wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. She’s not just there for the fitness, she really enjoys the martial arts and doesn’t mind getting in there and taking it to the boys.”

“I forgot how it felt to truly feel good, and how important this is across all areas of your life. The numbers on the scales changed, I lost an incredible 18.7kg dropping from a size 16 to a 10 which has completely changed my body shape. However, this wasn’t all that changed. I have a new passion and zest for life, I am a better mum, wife, friend and boss because I am not so stressed out all the time. In her quest to find forty, Rebecca Douthwaite found more than she imagined she would. At the start of her challenge, she had a desire to be fitter, stronger, healthier. She wanted to be happier and for all aspects of her life to shine. But wanting those things and then earning them are two different things. She discovered that the journey itself put her on an unimaginable path of self-discovery. Where she learnt more about herself, her strengths and weaknesses, than she thought possible. “The biggest surprise for me, is how important training has become. Before the challenge I couldn’t find the time to train, but now, everything else works around it… most of the time! I didn’t realise how much I needed an outlet. A place I can go and punch, wrestle, roll and sweat out the stresses of day-to-day life. A place I don’t have to “be” anything to anyone else.” Learning to let go and to be vulnerable has been a big part of Bec’s journey. “My greatest achievement has been learning to let go. Learning that its ok to not be perfectly in control, and it’s only in a place where you feel vulnerable that you grow. I’m still working on this!”

How has this challenge helped you to realise that age truly is only a number? “It’s funny, I feel younger at 40 than I did at 30! I found something I am passionate about and this has become my new way of life. Dropping the weight has been a cool side-effect on this journey. Although it started out to be all about my weight, for me it’s not the most import thing now. It’s definitely part of it, but feeling good and wanting to get out there and enjoy life is the secret to staying young. Your age is simply a number your attitude and zest for life is what defines you. We caught up with WMA coaches, Anton Zafir and Dan Zealand, for a wrap-up of Bec’s fitness since starting her challenge. Anton commented, “Bec’s confidence has definitely improved. She comes into the gym holding her head a little higher and shoulders a little straighter. Her personality has relaxed, she’s not as highstrung as she once was because she gets to

Dan and Anton, Its hard to put into a few words everything i want to say, and thank you just doesn't seem enough. You have changed my life in so many ways! Not only have you helped me achieve my fitness goals, you have given me back something that I thought I lost so long ago. Thank you

How has Bec changed in her approach to training?

What made you proud of Bec?

Dan; “Bec would try in every way possible to negotiate her way out of doing her most hated and despised conditioning movements. She’s an excellent negotiator in so many ways, except when she tried to convince us why she wasn’t able to run up a hill! However, as always, the discipline and willpower grew within her to the point where she accepted what she had to do, and the negotiations lessened over time.”

Anton; “The ability to maintain her composure better when placed in a position that she cannot control, and to keep pushing forward.”

What was Bec like to train? Anton; “At the start, quite tough, because she is headstrong and didn't like being told what to do or the feeling of not being in control. However, I also feel that this trait has helped her to improve quickly as she is very dedicated to getting better, to be able to control situations that occur in sparring and rolling during class.”

Dan; “She also did a great job in balancing an extremely busy job role, keeping up with her family commitments and maintaining her dedication to fitness that she made to herself and us as coaches.” Would you like to see Bec step into the ring one day? Anton; “I would love to see her compete in a Jiu Jitsu competition first and then see how she feels about a boxing fight and maybe even finish with an MMA fight. So we will see.” Congratulations Bec – the team at WMA are proud of the dedication you made to fight for your fitness and look forward to helping you smash new goals as you enter this exciting new decade of life.

Feeding the Soul

Amateur Chef Nights Raising Money for Suicide Prevention

Connecting with friends over dinner is a great way to check-in, catch-up and make sure everyone is doing ok. This is why Kellie Chart from the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network (WSPN) decided to introduce Amateur Chef nights to the local community. “I ran this competition around 4 years ago for Logan’s Adventure playground and it was such a great success. This year I thought it would really suit raising money for suicide prevention as not only are you raising money but also getting people to reconnect and really think about those friendships,” said Kellie. Kellie would like to invite everyone in the community to run their own Amateur Chef night with all funds raised going to WSPN. All you need to do is register your event with Kellie at events@wspn.org.au, decide on a date, invite your friends along and prepare a delicious meal to be enjoyed by everyone. You can either ask them for a donation or decide on a set price to charge. “Last time we ran this competition we had events ranging from mums groups getting together for a picnic with their babies to a full scale fine dining experience with auction. It really is up to you!” Said Kellie. The Amateur Chef night that raises the most money and holds their event before December 2 will win a table at Anchor Bar Airlie Beach with share platters for up to 10 people. If you’re keen to win the prize, you might like to hold a raffle on the night, run games during the evening or even hold an auction. “Last time, someone auctioned their tradie husband off to do some odd jobs - I wouldn’t mind winning that!” Said Kellie.

15117_CORE Life Mag-Nov-Dec_V2.pdf_85of100

Suicide awareness and prevention is close to Kellie’s heart because she lost her partner Stu, father of her son Liam who is now 11, five years ago to suicide. “Those that knew Stu found it difficult to fathom. Publicly he was very upbeat and a laugh a minute and that is something we hear way too often. Since then I feel heartbroken every time I hear of another young man who decided there is no other way but to end their life. “It’s taken me a while to be ready to speak out but I am so pleased to be back fundraising and hopefully getting people talking,” said Kellie.

the Resilience Program for highschoolers and the Youth & Sit with me Program for Primary schools. “Be kind, you never know what someone else is going through on any given day and just a small gesture can make such a big difference. If you or someone you love needs help please get in touch and we can help put you in touch with the right people,” said Kellie If you or someone you know needs help please call lifeline on 131114

A major issue for Kellie is how we perceive and use the word suicide. For many years there has been a stigma about suicide, previously it was thought the more people that talked about suicide, the more people would do it, so newspapers didn’t report and the word wasn’t mentioned. “People need to be able to openly discuss suicide. If the word is taboo, how is someone supposed to be able to come to you if they are having suicidal thoughts?” Said Kellie. Kellie would like us to use our Amateur Chef nights to not only raise money for suicide prevention but also to bring the conversation to the forefront by making pledges to ask a mate if they are ok or openly talk about our own feelings if we are struggling. “It’s all about not judging people and being open and available to help if you see or feel someone maybe having a hard time,” said Kellie. The money raised from Amateur Chef nights goes to a variety of community awareness and educational projects funded by WSPN. Current projects WSPN are working towards are Prevention Support Group programs for schools,

How to cook the perfect Christmas Ham With

LETICIA ROSS

Firstly ensure the pork is sourced from either local or Australian producers. Look for one with good fat coverage as this enables moisture to be retained within the meat during the cooking process. A rich brown rind and pink, moist flesh are also good indications of a good ham. Step 1: Preheat oven to 170 degrees Step 2: Prepare your glaze, a ginger marmalade glaze is my favourite Step 3: Remove the rind while keeping the fat intact on the ham. Step 4: Using a sharp knife, score the fat in an even diamond pattern. If you don’t feel confident removing the rind or scoring the fat, your butcher will no doubt be happy to help. Step 5: Decorate as desired, traditionally ingredients such as cloves, pineapple or cherries are popular choices

Festidviees foo

from Master Butchers Marian

Step 6: Baste the ham with a generous amount of the glaze while leaving enough to coat the ham several times more. Step 7: Place the ham into the oven on the bottom shelf. Step 8: In 20-25 minute intervals, re-baste the ham. Sep 9: after approximately 1-5 hours (or when you are satisfied with how the glaze has caramelised), remove the ham from the oven. Tip The best way to slice your ham is to make vertical cuts from the top of your ham downwards until your knife hits the centre bone. The ham will remain attached to the bone but continue to cut across the length of the bone the amount of slices you desire. Then, run your knife horizontally under the slice, across the top of the bone.

Did you know? You can store your ham and keep it fresh for up to two weeks quite easily. This can be done by either purchasing a ‘hambag’ or using a pillow case soaked in a weak solution of white vinegar and water to store your ham in while refrigerating. Every second day, it is advised that you rinse and re-soak the bag to keep it and the ham as fresh as possible to maximise the life of your ham.

YOUR WINE IS CHILLED TO PERFECTION, EVERY ITEM ON THE MENU LOOKS TANTALISING AND YOU ARE MESMERIZED BY THE EXPERIENCE BEFORE IT HAS EVEN BEGUN. Mira, the most recent addition to Airlie Beach’s restaurant scene, is located at the multi-award winning Mirage Whitsunday resort complex. The restaurant opened its doors to both resort guests and the general public in October and has been enjoying excellent reviews. Owners, Pearls and Rui Yeh, who previously owned Café Cool La La which they sold earlier this year, have travelled the world to study different tastes and cultures, bringing a unique flavor of Modern Asian Cuisine to the Whitsundays.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MENU?

WHAT’S ON THE WINE LIST?

Our menu is inspired by the cuisines of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand where many of our chefs come from. We use some of the best and freshest local ingredients and the menu is interpreted in a way that it is suitable to the modern diet. It is low in gluten, sodium and dairy, Most of the dishes are designed so that they can be altered to suit your individual needs.

We have an extensive wine list incorporating 40 different wines from all around the world. Our guests can enjoy red, white, rose and champagne which has been hand-picked from France, Tasmania, New Zealand, West Australia, the Barossa Valley and many more. STAYING AT MIRAGE

The restaurant has been elegantly styled with natural tones and delicate hues, complementing the surrounding natural beauty. The dining area leads out to a verandah which is open to restaurant guests who can enjoy al fresco dining with stunning views.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITES IN THE MENU?

Mirage Whitsunday’s resort complex boasts a collection five-star serviced apartments which are elegantly appointed on a secluded stretch of coastline within walking distance to Airlie Beach.

The Vietnamese Roast Duck Curry is one of our most beautiful dishes. The flavours are soft, subtle and not too spicy!

The immaculate resort landscape is located in a lush tropical setting with tranquil gardens and two on-site swimming-pools.

The split level dining also offers breakfast and lunch daily from their poolside bistro.

Our grazed Beef Short Rib is also a favourite. It is slow cooked for five hours and so soft that the meat almost falls off the bone and melts in the mouth. The flavours incorporate a distinctly Asian touch with lemongrass, ginger and Chinese green peppers.

The apartments are modern and fully-equipped with epicurean kitchen, free wifi, access to over 500 movies, a garden terrace and private plunge pool.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, Mira Restaurant takes your taste buds on an exotic journey to the East and beyond.

festive feasts at the Phoenix

foo

What better way to reward your hard-working team or celebrate the end of the year with family and friends than a festive feast that’s filling on your tummy but light on your wallet. From intimate family get-togethers to epic office celebrations, Tropical Phoenix Garden Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a hearty feast while enjoying the company of friends.

Centrally located in the Rivage complex, beside the Bluewater Lagoon, the restaurant is open seven days per week for lunch and dinner, with indoor (air-conditioned) and outdoor dining options. Starting from less than $30 per person, a famous Phoenix banquet is the ideal choice for festive celebrations. The food keeps flowing until everyone is full; serving plentiful plates of tasty Thai, an affordable option to feed a crowd. These banquets can be tailored to suit every taste, simply let the restaurant know which dishes you would like to swap out and they will give you a price per-person based on your chosen selection. Functions are a specialty with the ability to sit 50 people indoors, and an additional 40 people outside. A new air conditioner indoors assures year-round climate comfort. As well as banquets, the dinner menu is extensive. Authentic delicacies made with fine-dining techniques and fastidious attention to detail, these special recipes are refined with academic knowledge of traditional cuisine. Classic favourites are executed to perfection; pad Thai, Singapore noodles, honey king prawns and cashew chicken, but you will also be treated to authentic specialties; chilli basil beef or roast duck hot pot. If you like it hot, try the jungle curry for a spice explosion, or if chilli is not your friend, the sweetly fragrant massaman beef curry is a tasty choice. The special fried rice is a local favourite as are some of the munchable entrees, including satay chicken skewers and san choy bow. A wide range of cocktails, beer, wine and spirits are available to complete the celebration. Of course, the festive season is also about kicking back, relaxing and enjoying time at home. Grab some takeaway during lunch or dinner to feed your tribe, or let Tropical Phoenix deliver to your door. Delivery specials are often advertised on its Facebook page; this is also where you can find the restaurant’s menus to view online. Select their album named ‘Menus’ to find the special lunch menu, takeaway menu and dinner menu. Tropical Phoenix Garden Restaurant is open every day of the festive season, including public holidays. Skip the stress and clean-up of Christmas Day and enjoy a special Christmas banquet by the lagoon. `Tis the season to be merry, let Tropical Phoenix ensure your food is festive.

As the Chair of Mackay Tourism and Mackay BB Print Stadium I have seen this region continue to increase in tourist numbers, and facilities. The Mackay Airport has just recorded visitor growth for the past seven consecutive quarters and I feel certain that this trend will continue well into the future. The Stadium has ensured that as a region, we now have an outstanding facility to serve our community and attract world class events. I am really proud of the ‘’101 Things to do in Mackay’’ that we launched back in 2015. This campaign continues to generate much interest in our region and demonstrated to us as locals the importance of discovering and experiencing the many things that there are to do right here on our doorstop. I am proud of the many achievements of the Mackay Airport and its role in growing our region’s economy. The recent additions to our food and beverage options at the Airport have been met with great enthusiasm by our passengers. Our new covered pick up and drop off areas and walkways are also a great example of our commitment to improve the experience of our customers, across the Airport.

Hello from everyone at

The construction of the Ibis Mackay and its occupancy continues to go from strength to strength and Turbarlence is now a regular watering hole for both visitors and locals alike. I have had the great honour of being involved in some outstanding projects across the community, including mentoring many great young people. The Mackay Airport Community Grants Program is also something I am proud of and its role in recognising the contributions of organisations that play an important role in building our community. Finally a very big thanks to all the great team at Mackay Airport. My role here has taught me you are nothing without your team. Thank-you for all your support.

One of life’s great truisms is that all good things must come to an end. This will be my last column in Core Life as I finish up in my role as General Manager for Mackay Airport early in the New Year. For the past seven years I have had the great privilege of being part of the wonderful community of Mackay. It has been a real honour to have been involved in such a vibrant and proactive region and one I have been proud to see develop.

Until next time, happy and safe travels.

Rob Porter, General Manager
