MEN IN INDUSTRY From bankers to boxers and tradies to teachers; meet some of the inspirational men shaping our region through industry.

Last meal: We're trying to be healthy, so it was tuna steaks and salad Fav beverage: Champagne I don't leave the house without: Clothes! And at the moment GPS because I'm still trying to find my way around (Mackay is bigger than I originally thought) Fav place on Earth: Beach Trust in fate, even if you don’t understand the journey. The newest member of our Core Life Magazine team, Chendelle Kolasa, understands how the universe can work in mysterious ways. Travelling from Melbourne, Chendelle went to a friend’s party in Airlie Beach last year. Little did she know that she would stumble upon both love and a new career during this trip of fate. She started a long-distance relationship with her now partner, Corey, and decided to make the move from Melbourne to Mackay. The first time she was in Airlie, she had picked up a copy of Core Life Magazine and liked what she saw. When she made the decision to move to Mackay, she made a passing comment to Corey, ‘I could work for this magazine,’ and as fate would have it, there was a position available that fit her previous experience perfectly. She is now our Mackay Sales Manager and hit the ground running straight into our Men in Industry feature. From starting on reception in her early 20’s to progressing to sales positions in Victoria and the Gold Coast, Chendelle has been drawn to print media. She has worked with newspapers and magazines her entire career, including with Bauer Trader as a sales executive for magazines; Deals on Wheels, Earthmovers and Excavators and Farms and Farm Machinery. This experience sets her up ideally to work with clients in the agriculture and mining industries here in Mackay. “I've never really wanted to do anything else, I believe in the power of print media. Before moving to Mackay, I was working on the Mornington Peninsula Magazine which is seen as the ‘go-to’ for information in the community. I love reading magazines and whenever I go somewhere new, I love picking up the local magazine to see what things are on,” she said.

Following in the footsteps of his siblings, Gavin Walker joined the finance industry straight out of school. The decision to join the same industry as his brother and sister proved positive, with a 30-year career to show for it.

“We are privileged as real estate agents to be able to play a small part in one of the biggest events in most people’s lives. The reactions we get to witness, and the appreciation that we receive when we help both buyers and sellers, is something that I personally get the most satisfaction out of.”

“The changes that I have seen in the industry is quite considerable during this 30 year period and it is quite extraordinary to speak of duties we once performed in branches that do not even exist these days. Technology has been the largest contributor to ongoing change. At times it has been challenging, but I believe the focus of the change has always been to make for a better experience for the customer.”

Born at the old Mater Hospital where the Sydney Street Markets now reside, Joseph Rickman’s love of Mackay makes him the ideal person to help others live the dream. As a Sales Consultant for Gardian Real Estate, he has the pleasure of not only selling houses, but selling a lifestyle. After a 15-year career as a PGA professional, he decided to take a swing at real estate, not only to challenge himself, but to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Gavin is a Business Banking Manager for Bendigo and Adelaide Bank for Mackay, Sarina and the Whitsunday regions. He enjoys working for a business who is focused on supporting the local community.

“My father was one of the founders of Gardian Real Estate and the desire to follow in the great work that he has contributed to the real estate industry was enticing. I have loved every minute,” he said.

“It is heavily promoted and believed by us here at the Bendigo Bank, that the role of a bank is to feed into the prosperity of a community, and not just off it.”

When he’s not chasing golf balls on the green, Joe has his hands full chasing his two-year-old son, Parker.

“I like to make business personal and enjoy meeting over coffee to listen to what businesses are looking for from their banker.”

WHAT’S SOMETHING SURPRISING THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF WORK? “My family is my greatest passion. I am married to a wonderful and supportive wife, we have three beautiful daughters aged 16, 14 and 9. I am very lucky that we all share the same sporting passion in hockey. I have been playing or coaching hockey all my life.”

“Prior to Gardian, I worked at the Mackay Golf Club. I was and still continue to keep my membership and status as a qualified golf professional and PGA member of Australia.” FUN FACT ABOUT JOE! “I am the eldest of five children, with one younger brother and identical triplet sisters.”

Henk a heavyweight of the mind

F

rom growing up rough in Rotterdam to living a life of luxury in the Whitsundays, Henk Plug is a self-made businessman with many impressive tales to tell. While his rags to riches story is an inspirational example of how hard work can reap great reward, it’s from the sport of boxing where Henk became a heavyweight. A bad concussion meant that he couldn’t box for The Netherlands at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, which is why he had so much respect for an Australian fighter who walked behind our national flag in Sydney in 2000. Henk became a close friend and mentor of World Champion boxer, Danny Green; as his first professional sponsor. His respect for the sport he loves has taken him on an incredible journey. No stranger to travelling the world, Henk had already sailed around the globe five times by the time he was 20 years old. He became a Bell Boy on a ship before he turned 16, making the most of Rotterdam’s reputation as a port city. He began boxing even earlier, from the age of 12, a sport which he says taught him a lot of respect. “It was learn how to fight or get into trouble. I grew up in a poor neighbourhood, our house had a lot of love but no money. We were rich in family but poor in other things. Boxing was a way to learn how to stick up for yourself, www.corelife.com.au 14 14 www.corelife.com.au

but it taught me respect; respect for myself, respect for others. If I wasn’t boxing, I would have gotten in the shit. It formed who I am as a man,” he said. As a man of the sea, Henk boxed all over the world when they arrived at port. “I loved boxing and I was pretty good at it. We had boxing matches on the ships and then all around the world, we would stay in seaman houses and fights were arranged. Places like New York, we could do our sport.” He met the love of his life and was married with two children by the time he was 23. His priorities changed and he gave up boxing to concentrate on his family. He hopped on a plane with two suitcases, his wife and two young children, and flew to Australia to start a life of opportunity. “Two suitcases and $308. That’s all we had. We couldn’t speak the language, so we learned very quickly. We lived in an old iron house in Paramatta, worked from day one, never had a hand-out,” Henk said. He established Leichhardt Electrical Wholesalers Pty Ltd (LEW) in 1987 in Sydney with his son, Arie. He laughs that you couldn’t get a more appropriate name than Plug to work in the electrical industry.

His love of boxing never waivered and Henk was involved with the PCYC from early days, where he met Danny’s trainer-manager, Jeff Fenech. Jeff approached Henk in 2001 about potentially sponsoring a promising young fighter who had broken his hand multiple times before representing Australia at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. A nervous Danny Green met Arie and Henk in 2001. Little did he know that Henk had already made up his mind to sponsor Danny. This was the start of a lifelong friendship between the families and a moment Danny attributes to easing the financial burden of starting his career as a professional boxer. In his book, Closed Fists Open Heart, Danny says; “I’ll never be able to repay the Plugs. They couldn’t know of the pressures they saved me and Nina (Danny’s wife) from. I was blessed to meet these wonderful people. They made it possible for me to train at awkward times during traditional business hours and that lifted a heavy weight from my shoulders.” Henk’s employment of Danny lasted six and a half years while the boxer trained relentlessly to make a career out of his talent. “I asked Danny, what do you want from boxing? Danny said to me, ‘I want to be a World Champion and I want to be set up for

life.’ So, I said to him, ‘Well go out and get it.” Danny became a four-time World Champion and a successful businessman in his own right with a popular range of gyms across the country. How lucky am I to have been a part of that? People say he’s lucky to have met me, well I say I’m lucky to have met him. “I’ve had the great privilege of travelling the world to watch Danny fight. I’ve seen all his fights bar one. I was in Germany in 2003 when Danny was controversially disqualified in the fight against the late Markus Beyer who sadly passed away last year. He knocked the German on his ass twice in that fight. I’ve watched the replay a hundred times and the decision to DQ Danny was just crooked.” “Another memorable fight was 2009 when Danny fought in front of a sold-out crowd in Sydney and KO’d Roy Jones Jr. for the IBO cruiserweight championship in the first round,” Henk said. He says that fighters don’t win in the gym or the ring, they win between the ears. Henk works with

many big-name boxers in the lead-up to their championship fights to help them with mental preparation.

Arie still runs LEW in Sydney, and Henk’s daughter and son-in-law, Hanny and Craig Spence, own and operate LEW here in the Whitsundays.

“Most people wouldn’t know these guys are in the Whitsundays, but they come and spend a few days with me, swim in the pool, eat good food and spend time getting their head right,” he said.

Henk’s passion for the sport extends to the local scene, where he was instrumental in the creation of an Olympic-standard boxing ring here in the Whitsundays, which can be transported to other towns for competition fights.

Henk believes that much of Danny’s success comes from a good upbringing and having a supportive family.

“It was purchased 10 years ago and can be put on a trailer and taken to neighbouring towns, Moranbah, Townsville, Mackay. The money raised from renting it out goes to support the local PCYC. It’s a proper international-standard ring and has hosted many quality fight nights. It’s an asset to the local community,” Henk said.

“He comes from good stock to use an Aussie term. The sport attracts a lot of colourful identities. Danny has always had good morals. He hasn’t had to climb out of the gutter. He’s been surrounded by respect.” Henk was saddened by the passing of Danny’s father, Malcolm, last August. “Our families had all become very close. My son Arie became good mates with Danny and I consider him to be like my third son.”

His desire to succeed not only provided his own family with a future, but paved the way for one of our greatest sportsman to prevail. While Australia gave him a home, the immigrant from the Netherlands who never took a hand-out has given this nation much more in return.

he orange and black truck you have seen driving around the Whitsundays and Mackay is hard to miss. Owned by Tristan Olsson, director of Billetta Imports and Australian Distributor of Beta Tools, Tristan brings his motorcycle racing, Navy and entrepreneurial background to us in North Queensland. His business provides the very best in tools and motorcycle racing gear, imported direct from quality European partners. Many companies are already benefiting from his high-quality tools, motorbike accessories and parts. “I felt it was important to bring some competition to the area,” says Tristan, who believes that Beta have the most comprehensive lifetime warranty on the market. “This offers fantastic value and peace of mind with your investment,” he added.

Beta Tools is manufactured in Italy and for the past 50 years has been supplying the best teams in the world; including the likes of Ferrari, Peugeot, Renault, McLaren, Mitsubishi, Maserati,

Audi, Man, Pontiac, Aprilia, Ducati, BMW, Suzuki, KTM, Yamaha, Honda and many more. Originally from Tamworth, NSW; Tristan joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Marine Technician (Electrical). After several postings, including active service in the Middle East on HMAS Parramatta, HMAS Stuart and HMAS ANZAC; Tristan retired from the military in 2016 to focus on his business. He started road racing in 2011 on a 2005 Suzuki GSXR-750 and found it difficult to source quality parts for his bike at an affordable price. This is where the concept for his business, Aussie Sports Bike Gear, was born. He brought some of the best brands to Australia, including Accossato, Bonamici, LighTech, Spark, Sitta and Thermal Technology. His reputation for supplying quality parts presented some amazing opportunities for Tristan to work alongside some of the best racing teams in the world. “In 2015 I was working with Audi and their race team Phoenix Racing where we gained

a lap record and pole position at the Bathurst 12hr. I was invited to Germany to attend the 24hr race at the world-famous Nürburgring ring which was truly amazing. Before I visited Germany, I stopped off in Milan and visited Beta Utensil where I became the Australian Beta Distributor. Since then I have been involved in the World Superbike Championship, MotoGP and Australian Superbike Championship,” Tristan said.

In 2017 Tristan rebranded to Billetta Imports in order to expand his presence in the automotive industry nationwide and continues to grow. Tristan now calls the Whitsundays home after leaving the hustle and bustle of Brisbane. He married well-known local and Integrative Medicine Practitioner, Rowena Kissun, in December last year and is excited to bring the best of his business to the local community.

Bringing theWhitsundays to life Whitsunday Coast Airport (WCA) is giving passengers an unforgettable welcome after installing an Augmented Reality (AR) Experience as part of the $15 million terminal expansion and upgrade projects. AR is growing as one of the most sought-after technologies of today. Not only does it entertain passengers as they wait for their luggage, it provides marketing and advertising opportunities providing a return on investment for WCA. So what is AR for those who don’t know? To put it simply, AR works by deploying virtual computer generated images over real-world environments. In other words, you stand in front of the big screen and watch virtural animals move around you! To excite passengers and keep in theme the WCA Expansion Project has on promoting the Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef and Australia, customised AR themes have been developed to treat our visitors as they pass through the terminal. These include

Whitsunday Regional Councillors visited the WCA recently to check out the new AR Experience

kookaburras, koalas, wombats, dingoes and emus. Each AR experience runs for three minutes and allows visitors feel as if they are interacting with the animals which make life-like noises to enhance the experience.

• Ocean / Reef Theme Experience which includes sea life such as coral, turtles, whales, ďŹ sh, octopus, stingrays, dugong and sharks.

During each AR experience, the camera will take a series of photos and short videos. Visitors then have the option of entering their email address in the nearby AR kiosk and select which photos and videos they want to keep.

• Australian Animal Theme Experience which includes such animals as kangaroos,

when they share their images on social media! The Whitsunday Coast Airport logo will be featured in the images so others can identify where the image was taken. The Augmented Reality feature will excite and entertain passengers and visitors arriving to the Whitsundays and is just one of many fantastic new features that form part of the new WCA terminal. Whitsunday Regional Council would like to thank the Queensland State Government for funding the $15 million terminal expansion project. Without their valuable support, this project would not have been possible.

ATO Audits

who are the tax office targeting this year? PROPERTY INVESTORS According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) 90% of rental property schedules audited last year had errors or mistakes, so this year the ATO is planning on doubling the number of audits on tax payers who have rental properties. AIRBNB The ATO will be looking closely at tax payers who derived casual income from Airbnb arrangements. SHAM CONTRACTING

• BAS/GST Returns

This is when a business employs contractors, who really are employees. How do tell the difference? An employee gets paid for the hours that he works, works under the direction and control of the employer bears no financial risk and has an ongoing expectation of work.

• Estate Planning

Example.

OPENING HOURS

Don works for Dave the builder as a labourer, he has his own ABN and invoices Dave weekly based on the number of hours he has worked. Every day Don turns up at the worksite and Dave tells him what he wants him to do and how he wants it done, Don does not supply his own tools and he expects to work most days.

Monday to Friday - 08.00 - 17.00

Don is really an employee, Dave should be paying superannuation for Don and withholding tax from his wages.

Saturday & Sunday - Closed

Example. Peter is a tiler and works for Dave and other builders but most of his work comes from Dave. Peter quotes for each job that Dave offers him and supplies his own tools and materials. Peter invoices Dave each time he finishes a job. Peter has his own insurance and when there is a problem with a job that Peter has done, he goes back and fixes it. He does not get paid again. Peter is an independent contractor. The ATO are trying to clean up sham contracting by getting employers to pay the correct amount of super and withhold the correct amount tax. The penalties for engaging in sham contracting can be over $50,000 for each occurrence.

TRADIES – TIME TO PUT SOME AWAY! WHEN FATE HANDS YOU SOME EXTRA MONEY, DO YOU BLOW IT ALL, SAVE IT ALL OR BLOW SOME AND SAVE SOME?

If you’re in the building industry, chances are the Financial Year that’s about to end on 30th June may have been more profitable than normal. Many trades have been making good coin on the back of cyclone repairs around the region. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for many in tourism. Higher income provides opportunities to enhance lifestyle, reduce debt or build wealth for the future. Allocating some money to all three areas provides that trifecta of an immediate reward, more equity for the next downturn and more security in knowing you’ve got a plan for the future. When we make more profit, it follows that the tax man will eventually come knocking for their slice of the bigger pie. When you consider personal

tax rates can be as high as 47%, understanding your tax situation and how to minimise it is probably the highest value job you can allocate time to. Have you had a chat to your bookkeeper and accountant to get an estimate of how much additional tax you’ll be up for when they lodge your 2019 Tax Return? There are a couple of options for reducing your tax bill but one of the simplest and best is putting some money in to super. Sure, there’s trade-offs in that you can’t access it until you’re in your late 50’s or 60’s but you pay super for your workers so why not for yourself? Super contributions are generally only taxed at 15%. If you’re in the top tax bracket and paying 47% that’s an immediate saving or return of 32% on your investment. Even if you’re not in the top tax brackets but are earning between $37,000 and $90,000 your individual tax bracket is still 32.5%PMSand 15% is a 2768 hell of a saving. c 100 | m 90 | y13 | k61

Before you act there’s a few things to check out. What’s your age that you can get at your super? What’s the cap on how much you can put in? Is your existing super fund decent? Should you look at a Self-Managed Super Fund? What about property via super? How much do you need to build up for a comfortable retirement? What about insurances attached to super? 30th June is not far away, and you may need a couple of weeks to properly assess your options. It’s no good making decisions in the last week of June as you’ll restrict yourself to just using your existing fund. Start looking at it now and give yourself some time to make better decisions. oo much service is never a bad thing, which is why Optus has invested $6M in new site development and infrastructure upgrades throughout Mackay, the Bowen Basin and the Whitsundays. The telecommunications company identified the need to improve local mobile coverage and recently switched on four new mobile towers throughout the region. The new towers will address known black spots identified by the local community, providing residents and visitors with dedicated 4G mobile coverage to make and receive calls, texts and access mobile data for the first time. Optus’ Territory General Manager for Central Queensland, Madonna Burgess said, “Over the past few months Optus has switched on news towers in the Mackay region at Calen and Mirani along with two new towers in the Bowen Basin at Elphinstone and Glenden.” The new sites in Calen and Mirani will not only provide dedicated mobile coverage for those in each town, but also improve mobile reception for those who travel along the Bruce Highway and Mackay Eungella Road every day. Madonna said, “For the towers in Elphinstone and Glenden, these new sites will provide dedicated mobile coverage for these areas whilst improving the mobile network at the Newlands, Hail Creek, Burton and Byerwen mine sites. “We understand the importance for destinations like Mackay and the Bowen Basin to have reliable mobile reception and we’re committed to providing great coverage, choice and value to our customers across the region,” Madonna added. People who live, work and visit the Mackay region will benefit from improved indoor and outdoor coverage, faster upload and download speeds and reduced call drop outs; making it easier to work, play and stay connected. Optus knows that consumers are reliant on mobile connectivity more than ever and is dedicated to delivering faster data speeds.

Madonna said, “Optus is continuing to invest in its mobile network across the Central Queensland region, and it’s great to know that our customers are continuing to see an improving mobile network.” “We welcome anyone looking for a new mobile phone plan or an awesome value broadband internet, home phone or TV entertainment package to come down to the Optus stores in Mackay at Mt Pleasant Centre or Canelands Central; or our Whitsunday store at Whitsunday Plaza, and have a chat to the team.” The Optus mobile network handles over 31 million calls and 80 million SMS messages each day and carries 16,128 terabytes of data each week. Optus is continuing to expand and strengthen its network to deliver improved data and voice services across metropolitan, regional and remote locations nationally. If you’re ready to take your telecommunication needs to the next level, choose the team which continues to invest in its network to improve coverage, reliability and speed across its mobile network. As a leader in the Australian telecoms landscape, its unique mix of technology partners, global alliances and expansive spectrum holdings will ensure its clients aren’t left behind. s n o i t u l o S g n i n i Sirus M y a k c a M s t f i l k r o F and Hyundai On time, on budget and with second-to-none quality delivered. These are the cornerstones of success for Sirus Mining Solutions, who have proven that quality over quantity breeds growth no matter the state of the market. Establishing a business during the tail end of the mining boom meant that Sirus’ operations grew rapidly, from 5 to 14 people within the first 12 months. But the key to success was to survive the downturn. Owner and Director, Steve Galea, explains how his core values enabled his business to thrive during an otherwise tough market. “It was a difficult and exciting challenge, but at the same time, it honed our skills as a team to achieve growth in the last two years of the resource decline. During that time, we doubled the size of our workshop premises, primarily carrying out repairs on underground equipment. Then mid 2012 we had to make some hard decisions on how our business could survive a downturn and ultimately grow. “We certainly weren’t foolish with our money, we simply made do with what we had and made every effort to retain staff members. This was key as the underground equipment maintenance sector is challenging to find skilled tradespersons within Mackay. Since this time our workforce has fluctuated from 14 to 40 with commencement of operations in www.corelife.com.au 32 32 www.corelife.com.au Photography By Caroline Adele

NSW,” Steve said. No stranger to taking a risk, he describes his decision to start his own business as a leap of faith. Born and bred in Mackay, his motor mechanic apprenticeship began in his family’s business, City Motors Mackay. When the business was sold, he entered the mining industry with an international supplier in Mackay, where he started as a fitter and worked his way up to foreman and estimator. “In 2011, it was time to put all I had learnt to the test and back myself to take that leap of faith. Even when times were tough, we have never looked back, as it has taken all of the efforts of the current and past employees to make the business what it is today,” Steve said. The leap certainly paid off and with confidence improving in the mining sector, Steve was able to pursue an opportunity to represent Hyundai Forklifts Australia to become part of its dealer network. Within the first 12 months, Steve’s business was awarded the “Best Emerging Dealer” for 2018. Steve backs the quality and reputation of Hyundai, saying it provides the most technologically advanced product on the market. “They have certainly taken a leaf out of the automotive arm to present a product with advanced

build quality and reliability. Everyone that has physically seen the product agrees.” Sirus Mining Solutions has also evolved to be a leading heavy industry distributor for Valvoline and Hi-Tec lubricants, servicing the Mackay Region and Bowen Basin as well as clients throughout Queensland Australia. It can supply any Hi-Tec product from their catalogue at a competitive price. The innovation and commitment to solutionsbased service is one more reason why Sirus Mining Solutions is a trusted name in mining solutions across Australia. As the appointed Hyundai Material Handling Dealer for the Mackay Region, Steve’s business can service and repair any make of material handling equipment (forklift) on the market. They sell, hire, service and supply parts from Rockhampton to Bowen, including Mackay and as far west as Emerald. New and hire forklifts can be delivered to site, while service and repairs can come to your business through a trained technician and kitted-out service van. Larger repairs can be conducted at the main Sirus Mining workshop to handle larger equipment pieces. “With underground diesel and electric-powered equipment, this generally is performed in our workshop as we have the equipment specific for

the task. Equipment we service and repair includes LHD’s, personnel transporters, longwall relocation equipment, 1000Volt gensets, attachments, etc. Virtually nothing is off-limits. “Mid last year we set up an in-house engine reconditioning section which can cater for a simple surface grind to a full engine rebuild by our qualified engine reconditioner,” Steve added. Looking back on eight years of hard work and dedication, Steve is most thrilled that he now has time to spend with his family. “It’s only in the last two years that I’ve managed to start spend quality time with my wife and two daughters enjoying family holidays. Most of my weekend time is spent working in the yard at home or tinkering in the shed while thinking up ways we can improve the business.”

MEET THE TEAM Sales Manager - Tony Lisciandro After spending 11 years as a business development executive, Tony is the business development manager at Hyundai Forklifts Mackay. He brings strong communication and organisational skills to the position after experience on territory management and growing territory partners within the industry.

He took on the role as Workshop Foreman with Sirus Mining, looking after the day-today running of the workshop floor. Being ex-military, Sean still likes to keep fit and enjoys travelling with his wife to experience new sights and tastes. The couple have three children who have all left home, making new lives for themselves here in Australia. FLAT OUT FENCIN Does your fence cause offence? It shouldn’t be an afterthought of building, having the right fence for your property can make or break a first impression. Choosing the right one can create the illusion of space or give you the privacy you desire. Whether it’s at the racecourse, travelling the world or putting up fences, there’s no doubt Peter Cook loves to be Flat Out. Growing up in Sydney, Pete’s fencing skills came from working for a mate. “He had started his own fencing company and really excelled at what he did. I admired his drive and passion; he developed into a respected businessman and I wanted the same. I enjoyed the work and love the complexity and challenge of creating perfection with each job I take on, that’s when I knew the fencing industry was right for me too,” he said.

k o o C Peter

Family is important to Pete, who said he had a great upbringing in Sydney. “My Mum has been my rock and biggest supporter, the number one in my life. My brother works with me and is my right-hand man on the tools. I’ve had a lot of support from family and friends, I’ll never forget where I came from,” he added. From Sydney, Pete moved to the Sunshine Coast and then onto Airlie Beach 8 years ago, which he describes as the best small town he knows. He created Flat Out Fencin out of a desire to provide exceptional quality and a diverse choice to the local community. “Looking after the local community is my number one priority, by providing reliable and quality workmanship. We’re familyowned and operated, and of course, we’re always flat out with prompt service.” With so many choices of material and design, choosing the right fence comes down to a matter of taste. Pete’s business provides a wide range of options; from traditional timber to commercial chain wire. He is an expert in large rural and commercial fencing as well as Colorbond and metal options. He has a range of pool options including modern glass and aluminium choices, plus he is a master of decks and retaining walls for when the backyard is turned into an entertainment area. Give him a call to arrange a free measure and quote for your project. When he’s not flat-out fencin’ you can find him spending time with his family. He has two daughters aged 8 and 5 and loves nothing more than spending time with them outdoors, especially camping. He also has a racehorse, named Flat Out Elle. CAN YOU SHARE A FUNNY WORK STORY? “Every day is a laugh with my crew, but one occasion stands out. My brother-in-law was working with me, we were carrying a 3-metre sleeper and had just drilled all the holes for a retaining wall. All of a sudden, I lost my brother-in-law in a hole! Mind you, he is 4-foot-9, the hole was 800 deep and his leg is 600 long, so he couldn’t touch the bottom. It was an epic laugh.” WE HEAR YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR TRAVEL? “I try to travel as much as possible between being Flat Out. I love Thailand and Bali and next year I’m planning an epic trip to Europe. The ultimate goal on the bucket-list would be Vegas and Mexico.”

With dedication and distinction toward building luxury homes to meet the needs of modern families, Moloko Homes has secured a reputation for superior craftmanship and unmatched quality. From design conception to the finishing touches, its 12 prestigious Master Builder awards recognises the builder’s uncompromising promise to deliver an exceptional home. We meet the men of Moloko Homes who strive to build award-winning homes throughout the Whitsundays. Gavin Smith – Director 12 years ago, Gavin Smith had a vision; of livable and luxurious homes built with unmatched efficiencies and contemporary design. As a boutique, family-owned and operated building business, he focused on quality over quantity; delivering bespoke homes for clients looking for exceptional craftsmanship.

With 12 Master Builder awards under his belt, Gavin is most proud of the one his apprentice received for Apprentice of the Year. He said, “It was a proud moment, we put a lot of effort into training our young members, we’re extremely proud of them all.” Gavin credits his success to his team, many of whom have been with him for many years. “Both our team and all our trades have a fantastic work ethic and attention to detail. We will not take short cuts and use old-school tried and proven building methods. For us it’s not about volume, it’s all about quality and building long-term relationships with our clients.” With experience comes the confidence to produce excellent results, providing a stress-free environment for his team and clients during the build process.

He started his apprenticeship in 1995 in timber joinery and the manufacture of solid timber furniture. This gave him an appreciation for quality timber & workmanship.

“The systems we have in place make it fun for our clients. They get to help design their home, choose colours and feel part of the team along the journey. We can make that dream home a reality without compromise. We’re not going anywhere; we’re local, here to stay and can assist in years to come. Builders may come and go, but not Moloko,” Gavin said.

“I had always enjoyed working with my hands, crafting fine pieces of furniture gave me a sense of accomplishment I now carry over to building homes. Seeing the smiles of a family that takes the keys to a new home that they helped to design is a truly special feeling each and every time,” he said. www.corelife.com.au 36 36 www.corelife.com.au

In his spare time, Gavin loves his fishing to make the most of the beautiful surrounds we live in. He jokes that if the weather’s good, don’t call him unless you want to go along for the fishing adventure. He has a passion for motorbikes and enjoys a cruise every Sunday morning with a great crew of enthusiasts.

“You can never have too many toys.” Andrew Kronk – Site Supervisor Starting his apprenticeship in Airlie Beach in 1987, Andrew Kronk brings a wealth of experience to the Moloko Homes team. He’s been working for the organisation for the past 8 years and credits the excellent work environment. He added, “All the trades that work on Moloko sites have a fantastic work ethic and are a pleasure to work with.” As a Site Supervisor, he keeps a watchful eye on all the current job sites and assists trades with any enquiries they have. He ensures everyone has the guidance and gear they need to get the job done. What's your most memorable moment from on a building site? “Building a million-dollar houses on Hamilton Island was a real treat, flying to and from work every day in a sea plane or helicopter was something quite out of the ordinary.” What do you enjoy when you’re not building? “I like to ride motorcycles for fun, and ride around race tracks when I have the chance.” Bronson Lee – Lead Carpenter With nearly 15 years of industry experience, Bronson trained to be a carpenter in Victoria,

gaining experience in high-end residential and large commercial builds including schools and sporting facilities. He’s been with Moloko Homes for 18 months and as Lead Carpenter, coordinates and manages other carpenters to maintain both quality and efficiency throughout the build. WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? “I have an amazing fiancée, Bec Eden and two beautiful kids, Tahni (5) and Nash (1). He said, “Everyday as a carpenter you are faced with different challenges we are always learning and bettering ourselves.” WHAT'S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM ON A BUILDING SITE? “My most memorable moment would have been when I was shot in the foot with my faulty coil gun. It hurt!” WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR MOLOKO HOMES? “The workmates I get to work with.”

WHAT’S THE MOST INTERESTING JOB EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD?

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN IT’S TOOLS-DOWN TIME?

“Building stables for Tony Santic and getting to meet Makybe Diva. I’m not really into horse racing but it was still pretty special.”

“When I’m not at work I am usually spending time with my girlfriend. I enjoy going out on the water to go fishing or to the dam to go wakeboarding and tubing with mates.”

WHAT’S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW? “I’m a huge lover of sport, especially cricket and was lucky enough to represent Victoria when I was younger.” Ollie Annear – Carpenter Ollie began his building career in 2015 with Moloko Homes as an apprentice. After four years in the

Artie Whitton – Apprentice Artie Whitton has been with Moloko Homes for nearly three years as an apprentice. He said, “Being an apprentice is like being a student while working, as you are learning while doing the work involved. Every day we are learning different aspects of the building industry.”

He enjoys working for a local company where every day presents many different challenges to overcome. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? “I enjoy camping, fishing and exploring the Whitsundays as much as possible. There’s nothing better than living in paradise.” Patrick Conen - Apprentice Patrick has been an apprentice with Moloko Homes for just on two years. He enjoys the challenge of being able to build something from nothing and says that carpentry is a valuable trade to learn. WHAT’S SOMETHING SURPRISING YOU HAVE LEARNED AS AN APPRENTICE? “The number of tools you have to buy as a carpenter.” WHAT’S SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT YOU THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW? “My greatest achievement would be winning the Australian Supercross titles back in 2015. But not far behind that would be winning the meat tray at the Jubilee Tavern.” WHAT DO YOU GET UP TO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? “I really enjoy my weekends, going out for a fish or just getting out of the house.” www.corelife.com.au 37

Knowledge is not power!! It is potential power, it’s useless unless you use it. Starting a successful business at a young age put Ash Rowe on a path to quick wealth, but after now being in business for nearly 20 years, Ash can now look back with the wisdom of time at how he could have done things differently. “If I had my time over, I would have invested more money into real estate at an earlier age and I would have listened more seriously to older businessmen’s advice. You also learn that not everyone has the same passion for your business as you do. I would not have been so trusting and nice to people who didn’t deserve it and I would have been more careful of who I allowed to manage my companies,” he said. Thankfully for Ash, he now has a group of dedicated people surrounding him who care as much about his business as he does.

“The term team probably gets a bit overused in the industries we service. But we currently have one of the best teams Precise has ever had in in almost 20 years. To finally have a group of people that really care allows me to step away from time to time.”

feeling I must be doing something right,” Ash commented.

This team allows him to be able to take time out to support his fiancée, Kaleigh, who recently gave birth to their fourth child. Kaleigh also works in the business as its General Manager, so finding time to spend with their children relies heavily on trusting their team to take care of business while they aren’t there.

“It used to be all about ‘me’ and now it’s all about ‘us’ and I love it. However, a mate has challenged me to race the Finke Desert race in Alice Springs in June and since we will have a newborn baby, it will be one of the very few adventures I’ll do without my family.”

“Balancing life between business and family for my myself is relatively easy as I am very fortunate to have this fantastic group of people at Precise to take care of things when I am not there. Kaleigh being the super-mum that she is, allows me a lot of time to be a fun dad. People quite often comment on how much my kids love me and are always hanging off me, so I have a

He loves how significantly his life changed since meeting Kaleigh. His priorities immediately changed but he is taking time out to challenge himself to one fun event this June.

His advice to any young man or woman wanting to go into business for themselves is to take the plunge and go for it. But he has some words of financial advice that he wishes he had applied in his early years of business. “Remember, no matter how much money you ‘think’ you are making, you’re not. Put 10% of your profit away for a ‘just in case’ and I guarantee from time-to-time you will need it.”

n i P c i n i m o D d n a o n Gi MACKAY CURTAIN MAKING

Many people know Deanne Pin as being the face of Mackay Curtain Making, but as father-and-son Gino and Dominic Pin show, it takes many pins to keep this family business sewn together.

Dominic started working for the family business full-time in September last year and enjoys all aspects of the business, even working side-by-side with his parents.

Gino grew up in Wollongong on the New South Wales south coast. His Italian parents emigrated to Australia in 1957 and his father worked as a rigger for BHP for 30 years. He met Deanne and the couple moved from Townsville back to Mackay with two young children and a third on the way.

“I enjoy all of it, but I’m really taking a keen interest in the marketing side of the business, I’m starting to develop some advanced skills. Working with my parents is great, it can be stressful at times as you could imagine, but what I enjoy most is always having a laugh with them in the office and that it’s a positive atmosphere to work in,” he said.

Deanne’s passion had always been in the curtain and window dressing industry, so when the couple purchased Mackay Curtain making Service in 2003, Gino threw himself into the deep end of learning about curtains and blinds. He had been training for his own proprietorship of Harvey Normal Electrical when the opportunity presented itself to buy the curtain and blind business instead. “The selling side of the business wasn’t much different, it just involved understanding a different product. When it came to choose and select the right fabric and colour for the right room, OMG, this was a struggle! It took about two years of intense training then some. I also manufactured the blinds as well as installing. It was a whole new world to me,” he said. Dominic is the couple’s second-born and grew up around the industry. Gino said that he showed flair for the industry from a young age. “He even designed his own pelmet for our staff to make up when he was around 8-years-old,” he commented.

Gino agreed and said that working together has its challenges at times, but they all have their own roles to focus on and that keeps them busy. “The most important thing we established was we never take work home,” he added. After the working week is done, both Gino and Dominic agree that nothing beats unwinding with a cold beer watching the footy. On the occasional Sunday, they team up for a round of golf and chat about anything but work. What has been your most challenging installation? “Installing six motorised external awnings at a height of around 7m off the ground, with an uneven surface, using an off-road scissor-lift. Add to that, working at that height with a south-easterly blowing, it made it very challenging. Not to mention I am afraid of heights!” – Gino.

Iyas Shaheen and Paul Heatley SORRENTO RESTAURANT AND BAR AIRLIE BEACH

Iyas, Mandy, Paul and Jennifer met when their children were in kindergarten together. 10 years ago, they would never have dreamed they would be in business together. But after both couples have had successful experiences managing tourism and hospitality ventures, the timing was perfect to launch into this investment as a team. Iyas and Paul are Co-owners and Business Managers of Sorrento’s. While they come from very different pasts, they have a common goal for the future. Iyas, originally from Palestine, is an electrical engineer who studied at Michigan State University in the USA, before moving back to Jordan where he met and married Mandy, who was on a working holiday. After coming www.corelife.com.au back Mandy’s homeland of Australia, the 44 44towww.corelife.com.au

couple moved with their daughter to start a new tourism business, Fun Rentals in Airlie Beach, managed by Iyas for 12 years. Paul is from Adelaide originally but spent time living in Sydney, Canberra, Darwin and Tasmania. He brings a wealth of experience as a former marketing and recruitment specialist for one of Australia’s largest new home building companies. He also previously owned a hotel on the East Coast of Tasmania. The business-partners are easy-going family men; passionate about good food, true hospitality, loyalty and friendship. Iyas said, “Sorrento’s will remain the same fun, friendly, relaxed atmosphere where people can sit back in comfort, enjoy delicious food and drinks on offer whilst taking in the magnificent view of the Whitsundays.” “Whilst there will be some positive changes, the menu will continue to offer a range of great meals; highlighted by fresh local seafood, delicious salads, pastas, risottos and Sorrento’s famous homemade pizzas.” “We also take bookings for private functions on

the large alfresco verandah’s, the perfect setting for conferences, weddings and other special occasions. We cater for small and large groups, up to 80 people at Sorrento’s,” Paul added. As Abell Point Marina transitions into the newlynamed Coral Sea Marina | Resort, Sorrento’s will be a feature of the soft opening from the 5th to the 7th of July. The perfect time to stroll the boardwalk and enjoy good food and exciting live entertainment, overlooking one of the best views the Whitsundays has to offer. Fun fact about Iyas Iyas had studied sailing as an elective at University but had never experienced true sailing before moving to the Whitsundays! Since then he has enjoyed the exhilaration of many twilight sails and races, including sailing on Merit in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Did you know? Paul loves to holiday in Bali, it’s one of his favourite destinations; however, a close second is his own back deck, where he loves a casual BBQ with family and friends.

Getting it done PD LAW

Hayden Grimston

Kale Archer

THESE GUYS KNOW THEIR STUFF. “Well yes we do. We have to. We’ve got a strong team that works hard to get great results”, Stuart Bell said of his team at PD Law. “When we hire, we look for early problem solvers, good listeners, strategists. People who can join the dots others don’t even see. Our lawyers need to be patient but hustle at the same time. And we lean on them to embrace change. It’s no secret I’m obsessed with tech, new processes and efficiency. We don’t wait to be told about new ‘best practice’. We’re having a crack ourselves every day. We’ve been recognised at a national level as a result.” www.corelife.com.au 46 46 www.corelife.com.au

Senior lawyer Lucas Hickey enjoys the client relationships formed. “Clients place their trust in me to get it right, whether it be complex succession planning or business operations. That’s an honour and a challenge. I want to repay that. Clients want to know I’m as invested as they are. This lets me offer more for less by being commercial and looking to add value, and not just seeing a one-dimensional linear transaction. It always ends up with a better result, and it builds trust. Without trust it won’t work.” Business and litigation lawyer Hayden Grimston sees PD Law’s point of difference as a total immersion thing. “You’ve got to find the issues amongst all the white noise, work out a plan, and execute. Clients rightly

demand value. I know I’d want the same if I was in their shoes, and I think that’s the difference – we pay more than just lip service to our clients situation. We get right in there with them.” Mackay local and recent JCU law graduate Kale Archer couldn’t be happier with his new post as trainee lawyer. “I’ve got access to literally decades of legal experience right here in-house”, he said. “It lets me get my hands dirty way quicker than what might be on offer in a city law practice. I’m seeing how things really work on the ground in so many different areas of law. I think I’m also very fortunate to have joined a team that is tech driven. It’s so important for the future.”

Deep expertise in various areas of law is very enabling. Lucas Hickey again: “If I’ve got a business client needing some urgent criminal law help, we’ve got best-in-class expertise. The same with family law, or litigation. Our team collaborates daily, and our clients benefit from that.” As for the future, Stuart’s very optimistic. “I’m very happy we’re now recognised as a genuine alternative to major city firms to offer expert legal advice. Clients come back again because we perform, we’re reliable, we offer value and we get results. As for our growing team, we’ve got real experts in almost every area of general practice. We offer a challenge and a career path in a business that constantly punches above its weight. Our direction is crystal clear and our team knows it.” www.corelife.com.au 47 Photography By Norina Jane

REKENEN ACCOUNTANTS Ensure your business is as solid as a rock with a strong financial foundation. Co-owner and Managing Director of Rekenen Accountants, John Finlay, says that businesses who have a comprehensive plan and know the direction their business is heading will have a stronger chance of success. “The cornerstone of any good business is to have a business plan to help you reach your long-term goals. It gives both you and your business direction, clarifies strategies to achieve goals and defines objectives to ensure the business is always moving forward.” John’s strong business planning acumen comes from a background working for regional councils. After growing up in the Bundaberg region; where he met and married his wife, Pam who is a Professional Artist; they have resided in Bowen for the last 23 years. This is where his passion for the local community grew. “When you help the region to prosper, the businesses and community organisations within it prosper too. I’ve donated my time to a lot of local organisations, my wife often tells me that I can’t possibly be a part of everything, but I believe that when community organisations are supported, the people within it are given more opportunity for success. My wife and I fell in love with the Whitsundays, the beaches and the natural beauty, understandably it’s important to give back what it has already given us,” he said. His experience in business planning and financial growth plays a big role in the service John offers today. He believed that his experience gave him good stead to go into business helping others achieve financial success, so he joined Rekenen Accountants in 2013 and became a co-owner and managing director in 2014. He was recently named a CPA Fellow and delights in helping other businesses prosper. “I believe it stems from my business planning background, but I like to take the time to really understand the businesses that I assist. It’s not just about filing their tax return each year, but understanding the vision of the people who own the business. We give genuine, personal advice, and I believe that makes a real difference in gaining trust and confidence from our clients,” he commented. “Our business is growing through the services we provide.” Rekenen Accountants have two Whitsunday locations, in Bowen and Cannonvale. The business also services the areas of Collinsville, Torres Strait and Brisbane and have clients throughout Australia. The team in both locations work together to combine their knowledge across all areas of taxation, accounting and business; including business advisory strategy and assistance with self-managed superannuation funds. The Bowen office is located at 58A Herbert Street, and the Cannonvale office is located in Conway House at 6 Island Drive. For more information on their services, visit rekenen.com.au.

n o t a e h W w e r And “The opportunity to lead Whitsunday Anglican School (WAS) is a tremendous privilege and this is what attracted me to Mackay, along with the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant regional community.” You can take a boy from the country but you’ll never take the country from the boy. Growing up on a farm in New South Wales, Andrew Wheaton is passionate about providing access to outstanding education in rural and regional communities. “I was lucky enough to be inspired by passionate teachers, which empowered my thirst for learning and inspired an innate curiosity to discover the world. As an educator, I have been privileged to have worked in a diversity of independent day and boarding schools in Australia and London. Most recently, I was at Anglican Church Grammar School, a leading GPS boys’ day and boarding school. Further to this, having lived over half my life in rural and regional communities, I know how we can best provide our community with the benefits of a city education, without having to leave our beautiful region,” he said. As the new Principal of WAS, Andrew believes that the most rewarding moments are to influence the future lives of young people as they seek to lead in this dynamic global

environment. He added, “This is why we teach. Most recently, I was contacted by one of my former students from when I was a Boarding House Master, who is now a Senior Operations Officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in South Sudan. These are the special moments, which highlight how privileged we are to nurture the potential of outstanding young men and women.” In a world which is constantly changing, Andrew believes that it is important to be contributing to and influencing educational research to adapt to the challenges which change brings. He has presented and been published internationally and nationally in the areas of Emotional Intelligence and Innovative Learning Environments, having worked with some of Australia’s leading universities such as the University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Swinburne University. The curriculum at WAS is designed with this global change in mind, where students can express their creativity and innovation to solve the world’s greatest challenges; to be globally minded in their outlook; to develop resilience and strength of character through co-curricular pursuits; and for its young men and women

to be able to serve others in the community, humbly putting others before self. Andrew believes that an educator’s role in guiding students can be summed up by a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson; Scottish novelist, poet and travel writer from the late 1800s, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant”. When he’s not leading our future leaders, Andrew enjoys spending time with family and exploring the new region he now calls home. “I have two beautiful children, Xavier (11) and Harriet (7), who have settled into WAS fantastically. As a parent, having your children happy and engaged at school is so important. Xavier has just started to play Rugby League and Harriet represents WAS in Netball. We are also looking forward to doing some water skiing, as this has always been a family passion.” Andrew invites parents looking for a dynamic learning environment for their child, to book a personal tour of Whitsunday Anglican School. He encourages families to come and experience the welcoming and inclusive community at WAS, a School which confidently prepares students for the future, where they can realise their potential and be the best they can be.

LIFE’S BETTER IN FOCUS The path to success isn’t always clear, sometimes it takes a change in perspective for our lives to come into focus.

Ryan Cho

HANKS OPTOMETRISTS BY G&M EYECARE

With an inquisitive scientific mind, Ryan Cho was gifted in the fields of physics and biology. With Optometry being a perfect blend of the two, he was drawn to the profession without entirely understanding the diversity that Optometry would provide. “I knew very little about what an Optometrist was or did until I studied Optometry at university. Fortunately, I found the eyes fascinating to study and am thoroughly enjoying what I do now,” he said. Ryan obtained his degree in Bachelor of Optometry and Vision Science with therapeutics qualification at The University of Auckland. The five-year degree involved learning about the anatomy and physiology of the eye, eye diseases, ocular pharmacology and optical physics. He worked in three rural locations in New Zealand before moving to the Whitsundays earlier this year for a new adventure in life. He is the head Optometrist for Hanks Optometrists by G&M Eyecare, working Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the Cannonvale clinic and Tuesdays and Thursdays in Proserpine. He commented, “Our focus is mainly on eye health and providing personalised eye care. For patients who require glasses we provide a variety of frames and for lenses we offer ZEISS lenses, which are well-known for their superb optical quality.” They say that our eyes are windows into our soul, and as Ryan explains, that expression is more accurate than most of us think. “The eyes are not isolated structures but they are organs which are connected to the rest of the body in one way or another. This means that signs of certain health conditions such as diabetes, raised cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, to name a few, can manifest in the eyes. And detecting possible general health problems via the eyes is helped by the fact that the eyes are amazing structures where blood vessels at the back of the eyes can actually be observed without any invasive procedures.” This means that regular eye testing is more important than most people realise. Ryan added, “Get your eyes tested regularly as recommended by your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. Patients with some eye conditions often do not show any symptoms in the early stages, which is why everyone needs to have regular eye examinations.” Being new to the Whitsundays community, Ryan is enjoying meeting locals and exploring the tropical diversity; very different from the landscapes he was used to in New Zealand. He has a passion for music, loves to sing when nobody is listening and is challenging himself to learn to play the guitar. When it comes to eyecare, Ryan believes peace-of-mind is part of the service. Visit him at Hanks Optometrists by G&M Eyecare in Cannonvale or Proserpine for a clearer view of your overall health.

MINESPEC PARTS PTY LTD

Getting his hands dirty, fixing things and an interest in big machinery set Dave Jurik on the path to becoming a travelling salesman for a local Nebo business with global connections. He began a diesel fitting apprenticeship in Mackay not knowing much about the industry, with the hope of gaining the skills to make a decent living after high school. Once he started, he realised how interesting the industry can be, progressing to a position that not only earns him a living but provides him a lifestyle with variety. As a salesman for Minespec Parts Pty Ltd, Dave will travel throughout Queensland and some parts of New South Wales; up to Weipa, west to Mt Isa and other remote locations he hasn’t heard of yet. That’s the beauty of what Minespec do; provide new, used, refurbished and after-market parts at an affordable price to customers, in turn lowering their repair and maintenance cost. This means visiting every industry in the state that operates earthmoving and mining machinery; including coal and mineral mining, to farming, quarries, construction and civil. Dave’s position also entails asset procurement, asset inspections and inspecting idle parts and components situated in warehouses. He said, “We take note of customers parts and inventory strategies and, where possible, turn idle assets, parts and components into a consistent revenue stream. We have a global platform to sell to. It’s all about ‘turning surplus into purpose.’ My aim for our customers is not only to lower their R&M costs, but to generate additional revenue for them by purchasing their idle parts, machinery and components. We then bring

parts and machinery back to our yard in Nebo to disassemble and refurbish it, ready for sale to more than 30 countries across the world.” Minespec Parts not only covers our national mining operations from Queensland through to Western Australia in parts, but exports to a global network. Dave commented, “The future is exciting, I am looking forward to one day working for Minespec Parts on a global scale.” In the meantime, Dave is looking forward to clocking up tens of thousands of kilometres in the months to come, meeting new customers far and wide and enjoying the hospitality and tourism of outback Queensland and beyond. “I enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle. Going to the gym is a big part of my daily routine, especially while on the road. One of the first things I do in each town is find out whether they have a local gym. Along my travels I’ll be looking for local watering holes and waterfalls to explore. “Days off are usually spent going to the beach, long boarding, catching up with friends and just relaxing. I’m also a big music fan, travelling throughout the year to festivals and concerts to see some of my favourite artists live, they are all the things that make me who I am today.” The longer a part or a component lasts in life, the lower the operational cost for the asset in question. Contact Minespec Parts today and learn how your idle machinery can become a new source of income.

Dan Zealand Business Development Manager

WMA A paramedic, boaty, banker, mother, teacher, skydive instructor, publisher, police officer, tradie, lawyer, father, lifeguard and business manager all stood in a room. While it sounds like the start of a really weird joke, this is just a snippet of the diversity you’ll find at Whitsunday Martial Arts. People from all walks of life are finding balance through targeted training across multiple martial art disciplines. But no matter who you are, once you set foot on the mats, the only thing that matters is the martial art hierarchy. Co-owners; Dan Zealand and Anton Zafir, are part of this diversity. Outside of their roles as co-owners and trainers at WMA, they have day jobs; Anton is a teacher at Proserpine High School and Dan is a Business Development Manager at Whitsunday Foodservice. “During any given week, we have between 80 and 100 people train at WMA. Our aim is to give them the best martial arts and fitness experience possible to enhance their life, no matter who they are on the outside,” Dan commented. As soon as you walk through the door, everyone is equal. Each person is there to learn and

develop fitness and skills. Martial Arts does not judge. Your job or title outside does not give you a step-up or an advantage inside. It is a very humbling experience to walk onto the mats and be submitted, punched or thrown around by someone half your size with a different background or social circle then yourself, Anton added. DAN ZEALAND At WMA, Dan looks after the boxing classes and team, as well as assist with the Colts boxing. As well as classes and coaching, he and Anton also provide personal training sessions for individuals at obscure times of the day. As a Business Development Manager for Whitsunday Foodservice, Dan’s focus is on building key customer relations and developing growth strategies for the business. “Anton and I are very well-aligned with what we want to teach, our ambitions for the club and how we like to run classes. He brings an incredible amount of knowledge to the classes he takes and if he is away for any reason, this may see me coaching something MMA orientated classes which keeps things fresh.”

Fun fact about Dan He once told us here at Core Magazine that he has a 3rd nipple, well, that is actually untrue. However, he did star in a shampoo commercial as a 6-year-old which aired on Channel 7 at the time. WHAT’S THE DUMBEST WAY YOU’VE EVER INJURED YOURSELF? “I broke my right hand before a fight once… like two minutes before, just as I was about to walk out. Thankfully, adrenaline is a beautiful thing and the fight didn’t drag out but it’s not my brightest moment.” ANTON ZAFIR As the Head Coach of WMA, Anton looks after the Wrestling, MMA and Kickboxing classes. He also teaches Jiu Jitsu with another of his students as well as the Colts kids Boxing and Kids Jiu Jitsu. During the day, he wrestles with children on a completely different level, trying to get them to complete their homework. He teaches grades 8 to 12 and currently teaches Health and Physical Education; but has also taught both science and maths.

Anton Zafir High School Teacher Young Soo Kim Police Officer

“The greatest thing about being a teacher is seeing the type of young adults that the students grow up to be. To see them strive for their goals whatever that maybe and put in the hard work and dedication that is required to achieve it. To help a kid succeed when they didn’t think they could.” Fun fact about Anton He owns more than 500 DVDs and loved to collect movies. Movie night at Anton’s? We’ll bring the popcorn. WHAT’S THE DUMBEST WAY YOU’VE EVER INJURED YOURSELF? “Out one night, dancing and slipped on the dance floor. I hit my head on the ground giving myself a concussion, a week before I had to compete.” YOUNG SOO KIM Keeping fit for the job is a must for Police Officer, Young, our resident ninja-cop. With facilities like WMA in the Whitsundays, his training can be both targeted and fun. He

specialises in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, his favourite martial art. He also keeps up his strength and flexibility with calisthenics, animal gymnastics and squash. He has been working general duties for the Queensland Police Service for 10 years and holds the rank of Senior Constable. “You know the job is right for you when you can arrest someone, but years later they reach out to thank you for turning their life around.” Fun fact about Young Like a Cream Egg, Young has a tough exterior but a sweet and gooey centre. He admits to always crying when he watches animal rescue videos. Aaaawwwww. WHAT’S THE WORST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN? “Blood sausage in South Korea; instant vomit moment.” WHAT’S THE WORST THING THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU ON HOLIDAY? “I fell off a scooter in Saipan, no one saw me fall though!”

IAN WYBORN While jumping out of a perfectly good plane isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, for Ian, it’s the ultimate freedom. He has been working for Airlie Beach Skydivers since July last year and has completed more than 100 jumps. At WMA, Ian is also a fan of Jiu Jitsu the most, describing it as playing human chess. “My greatest moment at work no doubt was my 100th skydive back in November. I jumped fully naked.” With a creative soul, Ian sings, plays the guitar and enjoys drawing and art. Fun fact about Ian In case you’ve ever wondered – yes, Ian in fact does wash his dreads! WHAT’S THE WORST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU ON VACATION? “Confronting my vulnerability after nearly being kidnapped by Triads (Chinese Mafia). It was late at night in a deserted Chinatown in San Francisco in 2014.” Photography By Norina Jane

QTR Bridgestone Canelands & Paget “People always remember the way you handle a problem long after the problem itself has been forgotten.” A company policy based on honestly blended with a focus to provide exceptional customer service has seen one Queensland-based tyre business grow throughout the state. Queensland Tyre & Retreading is the parent company of two local tyre businesses under the Bridgestone Select brand, with locations in the city centre near Canelands and the other in Paget. The family business started with John Bollins. A fitter and turner by trade, he began his life in the tyre industry as a technician for Bandag Retreading. He advanced to become the training manager for Australia and South Pacific and then moved across to Boral tyres where he became Regional Manager, in charge of 20 stores. In 1999 he left Boral and in 2000 he purchased Queensland Tyre & Retreading. John’s wife, Ann as well as their four children, all play crucial roles in the business. The eldest, Carly, is the administration manager for the group with an experienced background in admin and accounting. Her younger sister, Lauren, has been working with Carly in administration for nine years, and their youngest sister, Taylar, is about to join them in the family business. Ann has been described as the backbone of the business, filling in when one of her daughters is busy growing their own families and supporting John in all aspects of the operation. John and Ann’s son, Chris, started in the family business fresh out of high school. He is now the group’s General Manager, but started out on the shop floor. Chris commented, “I began at our head office site in Salisbury, Brisbane back in 2004 as a tyre fitter. I learnt all aspects of fitting, aligning and light vehicle mechanical before moving into sales and growing that part of the business. That led www.corelife.com.au 56 56 www.corelife.com.au

eventually to becoming the store manager in Brisbane.” As the business continued to grow, Chris needed another set of hands. “We somehow convinced my brother-in-law, Aaron (Carly’s husband), to leave the music industry and help run the business about seven years ago. His background is largely focused on customer service and he has been a key factor in the business growth. We now run the company together with my parents taking a step back, closer to retirement.” The business grew to include five sites and will have expanded to seven by the end of the year, with locations in the Gold Coast, Salisbury, Wacol, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, and locally at Canelands and Paget. Next year, QTR will celebrate 20 years in business. Bridgestone Select Canelands and Bridgestone Service Centre Paget. Chris and the team were looking for one more store to compliment the rest of the group and increase their purchasing power to bring exceptional deals to customers across their network. A great opportunity arose when they came across Bridgestone Select Tyre and Auto Store, Canelands. “Once we met Lance and the staff at Canelands, we knew it would be a perfect fit for our business. “Our core business is truck and commercial tyres, so when the previous owner contacted us to express their interest in moving the truck centre on in Paget, we decided to head up and have a look. Like Canelands, once we met Helen, Steve and the staff, we knew it would be a great fit and began negotiations. “Canelands being car tyre and mechanical and Paget being predominantly truck and

commercial, the two businesses compliment each other as well as filled a void in our own service network, being able to service our existing customers in that region,” Chris said. MEET THE MANAGERS Lance is the store Manager of Canelands. He has a larger-than-life personality and along with Renee, provides a great experience when it comes to replacing tyres or servicing your car, 4wd or light commercial vehicle. You’ll find Bridgestone Select Mackay on the Corner of Victoria Street and Peel Streets. Paget is a larger operation and the manager roll is shared by Helen and Steve who between them have over 60 years’ experience in the industry. Bridgestone Service Centre in Paget is located at 96 Maggiolo Drive. “All of our staff in Mackay were a key reason behind us purchasing the businesses and we think of them as part of our family.” Whatever your make or model, book your next service or car repair with one of Bridgestone Select’s qualified technicians. The team will talk you through all of the service work and car repairs that need to be done to your vehicle before they start, without confusing jargon. If they find a problem, they’ll let you know what it is and how much it will cost before they begin working on your vehicle. Chris and Aaron believe in complete honesty and transparency, building their business on a foundation of family and friendliness. “This honesty system has created a trusting and large customer base for our business. At the end of the day, we are all human and humans make mistakes. We have certainly learnt that people remember the way you handle a problem more than the problem itself.”

Look after the ones you love “There are only two certainties in life; death and taxes.” - Benjamin Franklin

GILLIAN SANDHOFF SYNERGY ACCOUNTING

58

PAGETFEATURE

LUCKILY, SYNERGY ACCOUNTANTS AND ESTATE PLANNERS, CAN HELP YOU WITH BOTH. Your accountant often knows you, your business and your wealth better than anyone else; so it makes sense that they can assist you with the planning of your estate, to ensure your nearest and dearest are looked after in the unfortunate circumstance of your death. It’s not a fun topic, and often one we avoid. But it is important to ‘get your affairs in order’ even if you are a fit and healthy individual. Estate planning involves developing a strategy to ensure your assets and investments go to exactly whom you wish them to, in the event you pass away. You may assume that your spouse will be left everything, or your children. That’s not necessarily the case. You may also assume that your superannuation is included as part of your estate, again, this is a common misconception. Theoretical case study: There have been occasions, where a wife and the couple’s children, are forced to move out of their home, because the house was only in the husband’s name. When the husband passed away, the bank did not let the wife take over the mortgage payments, the house was sold by the bank and the wife was forced to use her husband’s life insurance money to top up the loss from the sale of the house to cover the rest of the mortgage. Yes, the one she wasn’t allowed to contribute to. We don’t think things like this could possibly happen, but, unfortunately, they do. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Synergy have a simple, four-step plan to ensure your affairs are in order. STEP 1 - IDENTIFY ASSETS.

STEP 3 - S OLICITORS APPROVAL AND ADVICE. Your thorough plan will need to be given to a solicitor to check and advise on any other issues. They can then draw up your wills based on the plan. STEP 4 - REVIEW. A lot can change in a year or two. If you have a will or estate plan, make sure it’s up-to-date. In its simplest form, estate planning is about providing peace of mind; that your loved ones will be taken care of in the event of your passing, with no stress or financial difficulties. Did you know? Approximately 25% of the population now are from the Baby Boomer generation, and they alone own 55% of the wealth. What this means, is that the next generation will be receiving large amounts of wealth. Estate planning will ensure this goes to the right hands and isn’t unnecessarily lost in red tape. DO YOU HAVE A WILL? In Australia, will and estates fall under two areas of law known as succession law and probate, and in most cases, they’re designed to ensure that the final wishes of a deceased person are fulfilled wherever possible. Without a will however, this can be an expensive, time consuming and often distressing process for family and loved ones. It’s not only people over the age of 50 who should consider estate planning. Everyone should have a will. Young people with a family should know what will happen if one, or both of them, should happen to pass away. Who will look after your children? Have you made your wishes legal? Who receives your superannuation or insurance payout? If you don’t have a will your assets will be distributed according to the intestacy laws of Queensland. This means your assets may not go to who you want them to.

You may not realise how many assets you have. You possibly have a car, a house, jewellery and other personal belongings. You may have superannuation, bank accounts and insurances. Synergy help you to categorise your assets and identify any issues, so you can plan who you want these to go to when you pass.

Don’t leave your future up to chance, make sure that your family’s tomorrow is adequately protected if the unthinkable were to happen.

STEP 2 - MAKE A PLAN.

Still in Paget, but in a central location; Synergy has moved to 34 – 42 Central Park Drive. You’ll find their building next to Goanna Brewing on the corner of Central Park Drive and Transport Ave. The new office is located on the ground floor and is spacious and welcoming.

Estate planning can be complex when multiple assets are involved; including family trusts, investments, property, superannuation and insurance proceeds. You may think that everything you own forms part of your estate, but superannuation and insurance proceeds as well as some joint assets and trusts, are not automatically part of your estate. These assets require extra planning. The accountants at Synergy get an in-depth look into your finances to ensure that all of your assets are protected in the way you want them to be. Synergy’s accountants can also thoroughly explain the tax consequences of how your assets are distributed and ensure this is dealt with in the most cost-effective way.

SYNERGY ACCOUNTANTS AND ESTATE PLANNERS HAVE MOVED!

the tradie makeover By Kazza's Barber Shops

For Mark’s hairstyle, Britt performed a fade using a 1.5mm attachment and blended up to a number 2.

BEFORE

On the top of Mark’s hair, Britt used scissors to trim, as well as texturing scissors to take the bulk out. Mark’s hair was then styled with Keune Medium Hold Paste.

AFTER

Hair

Beard Step 1 Consultation between Britt and Mark regarding his beard, was initiated on arrival. The chair was reclined, head rest adjusted, and towel gently placed over Mark’s eyes, to ensure he was comfortable and relaxed.

Step 2 Britt then proceeded to massage FATS hair and Face- Oil into Mark’s skin. This helps with softening the hair, followed by the first lather of shaving cream. The first lather is purely to raise dirt and clean the face.

Step 3 A hot towel wrap was applied to Mark’s face to open pores, ready for shaving.

Step 4 A second lather of shaving cream was then applied. www.corelife.com.au 62 62 www.corelife.com.au

Step 5 Britt then begins her shave in the opposite direction, judging which way is best suited to Mark’s skin and beard growth.

Step 6 Britt ends the face shave with a one minute massage and cool towel to close the pores.

Step 7 To complete Mark’s makeover our F.A.T.S after shave is applied.

Men and orthodontics Previously, men would generally only book in to see an orthodontist when something went wrong, such as when they lost a tooth playing football or have had an alteration in their bite due to a broken jaw. Often they don’t understand that their misaligned jaw or painful bite is not normal. As awareness has grown around the benefits of orthodontic treatment for optimum oral health and improving self-confidence, we are seeing more men embrace the benefits of having braces and other orthodontic treatment options. There was a misconception that seeking orthodontic treatment was somehow ‘unmanly’ but this simply isn’t true. Orthodontic treatment is now much more ‘mainstream’ and considered by many to be a necessary part of life. Generally speaking, men don’t tend to be as self-driven as women when it comes to visiting an orthodontist, and a large number of them attend their appointment at the suggestion of their partner. This makes them have less specific goals and questions about the process or the type of treatment they will receive and males tend to be more willing to follow the advice of their orthodontist. Of course, there are always exceptions to these rules. As orthodontic techniques are becoming more advanced and discreet like clear braces or Invisalign, we are expecting more men to make an appointment to see how their smile or bite could be improved. Especially since in Australia, no referral is needed to see a specialist orthodontist, book an appointment with Dr Rosario to discuss your orthodontic concerns.

ABOUT MUM

THIS MOTHER’S DAY This Mother’s Day, take some time out to prioritise you. Even if it’s only an hour or two, take this day as an opportunity to ask yourself, ‘what do I want to achieve this year?’ As a mother-of-two myself, I understand that life is hectic, and we often put the needs of our family first. But, we forget, that to be the best mum and partner, we need to feel good within ourselves. I understand that struggle all too well, to find the balance between looking after our family while also looking after us, and feeling ok about taking time just for you. At RPTM, we have a range of child-friendly fitness classes, catering for all levels of ability. We mix up the location; either in our fully-equipped studio or out among nature with bootcamps. The social aspect of joining your squad weekly is a great boost for your own mental health, and your kids will love mingling with other children for a regular play session. It also introduces your children to a healthy lifestyle from a young age, setting good habits for their future. Above all, you start feeling great. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never set foot in a gym before, we won’t push you beyond your limit. We provide patient, motivating and encouraging workouts that make you want to return. We want you to start prioritising you again. Smile when you look in the mirror. Re-discover a new wardrobe of clothes you thought may never fit again. Become the mum who can give her best to her kids and partner because she’s happy and full of energy. This Mother’s Day, enjoy your breakfast-in-bed and hand-made gifts from your children made with such love. Lap up the attention and devotion you deserve, spend your day enveloped in hugs and kisses. When you get a quiet moment, take a pen and paper, and write down something special YOU want to achieve this year. Then think about how you can make that happen. Take the first step. LOOK RUGGERED NOT BUGGERED WITH MAITRI AESTHETICS Women have been making use of antiwrinkle and dermal fillers for decades. It seems finally the men are catching on and popularity is rising. It is a commonly asked question “Do you see men in the clinic?“ Or can my partner come in too” Yes and yes. We see many men regularly in the clinic, and together our docotrs and practitioners create a plan before you proceed. Treating a mans face Is very different from a woman and the injector has to take great care not to feminise a man. Not all, but most of our male clientele want a masculine look with out being overdone. A well informed decision aided by the expect opinion of a top injecting practitioner is always a great choice. Not all injectors are equal in terms of expertise, experience and knowledge. THE TOP 3 TREATMENTS WE DO FOR MEN ARE... ANTIWRINKLE One of the most common treatments for men is antiwrinkle injections. The main two areas we treat are crows feet around the eye area and frown for our male clients. We will soften this area most times and allow for expression without the ageing. Longevity 3-4mths - depending on product and individual DERMAL FILLERS/PERMANENT FAT DISSOLVING Very often clients attend the clinic with the goal of creating a masculine sharp jaw line. We do this in combination with permanent fat dissolving injections and dermal fillers. Lower face filler for men is very popular. We can define jawlines and create masculine angles in the chin and lower face. This is done using dermal fillers and is a walk in walk out procedure, that is very comfortable. Longevity 12-18mths - depending on product and individual HYPERHYDROSIS We use a muscle relaxant/antiwrinkle injection to ease excess sweating of the underarms. If you perspire a lot we can use this treatment to down regulate the hydration system with an injected solution. This is a very comfortable and quick procedure to treat both underarms. Longevity 6-9mths

Kissun Clinics The people behind the magic Helping people heal is the greatest reward of all.

Looking back almost a decade ago, Rowena Kissun never dreamed her little one-room health would turn into a multi-modality clinic and become one of the busiest in Queensland. Local GP’s and practitioners from Mackay and Townsville are increasingly referring their patients to Rowena at Kissun Clinics for a holistic approach to health. With services such as counselling, acupuncture, osteopathy, fertility treatments, nutrition, live blood testing, pregnancy care and herbal medicine; patients are discovering that natural therapies and sciencebased natural medicines are providing excellent results and can no longer be ignored. Rowena commented, “We are not against pharmaceuticals or the medical system, in fact we embrace it. We need them just as much as they need us to find solutions to patient’s health problems. It’s never just about popping a pill. This may be fine in the short-term, but finding the root cause of the problem, whether it be physical or emotional, is what we do.”

Collectively, Rowena’s team of 9 consult with more than 120 clients per week, just in the Whitsundays alone, which is a testament to the shift that is occurring in medicine. Some interesting facts about some of the Kissun Clinics team: Mandy Coles - Counsellor

Mandy studied Psychology and Counselling at Melbourne Universities before working in the disability sector and advancing to business

development management. She later worked overseas in England and then in Jordan, where she met her husband Iyas. She worked supporting children in an SOS orphanage and helped to establish a child abuse prevention program, one of the first of its kind in the Middle East; then some years later supported young refugees by facilitating focused programs. After moving to the Whitsundays, Mandy began specialising in trauma and has worked as a counsellor and senior practitioner locally for the past decade. She is a registered Level 4 member of the Australian Counselling Association and has been admitted to the college as a professional supervisor. Mandy also provides Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselling and is an NDIS provider. After a sabbatical in 2017 to work and travel around the world with her family, she has since begun APT Counselling, practising privately at Kissun Clinics. Brett Piccinelli - Birth Doula and Placenta Encapsulator

As a Mother and one of four sisters born at Proserpine Hospital, Brett’s connection to the local area makes her passionate about bringing specialised Doula and placenta services to the Whitsundays. “I love to honour the history of womensupporting-women by incorporating traditional midwifery tools and ‘women’ practices from around the world. These include alternative ‘baby showers’ inspired by Native American

Blessingways, the use of Rebozo; a traditional Mexican midwife’s shawl used to ‘sift’ the pelvis, help relax the mother and move the baby into an optimal position; Bengkung belly binding from Malaysia to assist with postpartum healing and placenta preparation inspired by traditional Chinese medicine to balance the Qi.” Brett’s background in nursing and midwifery studies has given her the knowledge, tools and confidence to provide modern ing options to women of the Whitsundays. Dr. Francesca D’Cruz - Registered Acupuncturist

“Growing up I was always massaging the backs, necks and shoulders of family and friends. I wanted to help people, and I always knew that my calling was in health care.” Francesca D’Cruz wanted to be an Acupuncturist after her dad had major back surgery. “I witnessed how acupuncture helped him with pain and stress relief, better sleep, increased movement and flexibility. Back conditions and chronic back pain are my main areas of interest. Acupuncture can alleviate many other symptoms; including stress, anxiety and depression, digestive issues, nerve pain, headaches, and insomnia.” With empathy and compassion, Francesca attends to every detail, allowing her patients to feel completely safe and comfortable at all times during a treatment. They told me I had three months to live

“I was told by my Oncologist that there was no treatment available to me in Australia and that I had three months to live.” A cancer diagnosis is a life-changing and terrifying ordeal to go through. In this paralyzing moment when you are told you have cancer, whatever was consuming your life prior suddenly recedes far into the background as you come to terms with your own mortality. Instantly you are thrust into a new world with confusing terminology, grim survival rates and an uncertain future. No one understands this reality more than Airlie Beach local, Karen Filby. Her journey began last September when she underwent several rounds of testing to pinpoint what was plaguing her health. She had been treated for bronchitis earlier in March, but she felt as though something was still wrong. Her GP referred her to a lung specialist in Townsville for testing. Karen’s www.corelife.com.au 68 68 www.corelife.com.au

first biopsy came back clear, the second biopsy was inconclusive, but after the third biopsy, she was told she had late stage lung adenocarcinoma (stage four lung cancer). After receiving this diagnosis, her visit to an Oncologist in Mackay confirmed her worst fear. “My Oncologist told my partner, Dave, and I, that it was all too late for anything else; that there was no treatment available to me in Australia and that I had three months to live. To go from bronchitis to three months to live was unthinkable,” Karen said. Results showed that Karen had 15 tumours in her lungs, and chemotherapy wasn’t considered to be an effective option in her case. “I was told to get my affairs in order and they started talking about palliative care,” she said. Thankfully, the tenacity in Karen is strong, and

even before she received the diagnosis from her Oncologist, the couple had begun researching methods on treating cancer naturally. She commented, “The drugs they give you here in Australia to fight cancer frightened me more than the cancer did.” Discovering that chemotherapy wasn’t an option for Karen didn’t slow her down, it only inspired her more to seek an alternative approach. She visited a Naturopath on the Gold Coast, before discovering she had access to one of the best Integrative Medicine Practitioners only five minutes from home in Airlie Beach; Rowena Kissun from Kissun Clinics. Rowena has both a medical and natural health background which benefitted Karen, as she needed someone who could work with her Oncologist as well as provide scientifically-verified natural treatments alongside medical treatments, to

reduce the spread of her cancer. Rowena works closely with a cancer hospital in Bangkok offering intravenous natural treatments, Insulin Potentiated Therapies, Hyperthermia, Immune Therapy including Natural Killer (NK) Cell Therapy and Low-dose Chemotherapy, all through Kissun Clinics and the hospital overseas.

She added further, “Dr. Hossami is a genius. When you think that you can’t go on, he just looks at you, and you can. I was having one really bad day and I heard this voice behind me, ‘Hello.’ I turned around and he said, ‘Come here’ and he just wrapped me up in the biggest hug, what doctor does that?”

Karen added, “We were introduced to Dr Hossami and spent time researching the results this clinic in Thailand had achieved. One particular testimonial was from a lung cancer patient who has been through exactly what I was going through. That made myself and Dave cry, we knew this was the right path for us.”

Karen came back from Bangkok with incredible results.

She chose to undergo a nine-week treatment plan at the Bangkok clinic, specially tailored to treat her diagnosis. “In Thailand, they concentrated on a mixture of Eastern and Western medicine with a focus on the body as a whole. When you walk through the door of the clinic you are broken; but piece by piece, day by day, they put you back together with love and kindness,” she said. Karen shared, “I struggled with the treatments at times, but the staff at the clinic keep you focused, they support you, they love you. When you think you’re broken, you find that strength to keep going. They become your family and travel your journey by your side every step of the way.”

“After my PET scan, my tumours have reduced from 15 to 5 and my tumour markers have reduced by 50 per cent. What I have remaining can be controlled with oral medication and follow-up CT scans and blood tests here in Australia with help from Rowena, my Oncologist and the doctor in Thailand.” says Karen. Rowena is thrilled with Karen’s results and highlights how natural alternatives can work hand-in-hand with modern medicine to achieve outstanding results. “I love working with oncologists who appreciate what I do with diet, supplements and live blood testing; because it gives the patient numerous choices that may appear outside the box to some, but are overseen by our team of oncologists here and overseas. The team consists of doctors from Germany, Mexico, Thailand, USA and Australia, bringing new technologies in cancer treatments to patients in North Queensland either through my clinics in Cannonvale or Mackay or through the facility in Bangkok.”

Throughout her ordeal, Karen experienced a rollercoaster of emotion; from the sadness of losing friends to the joy she found in strengthened love. “Cancer has turned my life upside down. Negativity and pity have been difficult to deal with. I never saw this diagnosis as a death sentence, but other people did, and I had to learn to deal with that. “I have lost people I thought would always be there and found angels in others I never thought I would. Stop battling with hearing aid batteries Is poor dexterity, arthritis or bad eyesight causing trouble when changing hearing aid batteries? It was just over a year ago that I was talking about the advent of reliable rechargeability in hearing aids in this column. The advent of rechargeable hearing aids was a relief to those who struggled day to day changing batteries and a great innovation for those who just wanted the convenience of hearing aids that were ready to go when needed. Twelve months later and it seems every manufacturer has some form of rechargeable hearing aid option available. Some continue to use the ZPower system that allows you to swap your rechargeable batteries with standard ones if needed. Other went the lithiumion route and built the battery into the hearing device itself.

These devices also haven’t sacrificed any other features just so they can be rechargeable. Most come with wireless functionality so you can use them with TV streamers, microphones and remote controls and more. The latest models also stream direct from your Apple or Android device eliminating the need to carry another accessory around. The biggest question people have about this technology is the cost. Quality, advanced, Government accredited, rechargeable hearing aids, built on international award-winning platforms start from $2,190 a pair plus assessment and fitting costs (usually $300-$450). For Government Hearing Services Program eligible patients (eg

pensioners, Defence Force members, Sickness Benefit recipients and others) the costs start at just $395 a pair allinclusive and free for eligible DVA card holders. If you already have hearing aids some models can now be retrofitted to make them rechargeable. If you have been fitted with Unitron Stride™ M, Unitron Moxi™ Fit, Starkey Muse™ RIC 312 or Oticon Opn™ miniRITE aids they can be retrofitted with a charging kit for just $395. Stop fiddling with tiny batteries and move to the convenience of rechargeable hearing aids. Contact us today on 4957 2000 for more information or to arrange an appointment.

how to be a

Modern Man Evolving as a human being and reaching your full potential as a modern man does not have to be difficult. In fact, it is easily attainable with a few easy tweaks to your everyday life.

Here are ten healthy habits for the modern man 1. Consider nutrition and stop snacking. Understand that whatever you put in your body is what you become. Drink lots of water; eat unprocessed foods and cutout unhealthy snack food. 2. Exercise daily. Take control of your fitness and stop making excuses. Join a club, join a gym, go for a run, or take up boxing. Find out what you like and commit to doing some form of exercise every day. 3. Dress to impress. Feel confident and relaxed in your chosen attire. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a new wardrobe, just make sure you look good in what you wear. 4. Set aside personal time. Spend time reflecting and looking within, get to know yourself better. Go for a walk, meditate, try yoga. 5. Become knowledgeable on world affairs. Get informed so you can understand and function better in the world. 6. Treat women with respect. Do not objectify women, value them as equals who deserve respect and appreciate their company rather than focusing on their physical assets.

7. Connect with your children. Prioritise your children over work, take time to play and actively participate in conversations. Try being present at all times, stop preaching and focus on sharing time together. 8. Show emotion. It’s ok to cry when upset, openly show affection and talk about life’s challenges. This does not mean weakness, this shows inner-strength and emotional awareness Start by sharing something personal with a friend and watch how they in-turn will open-up to you. 9. Be humble. You don’t need to tell everyone how amazing you are, or pretend to know the answer to everything. It is better to be comfortable in your own skin, show strength without needing to proof yourself. 10. Be honest. Everyone respects and admires an upfront and honest person. In a modern age, respect is not demanded; it grows over time through good character and honest interaction with others.

harness your masculinity lessons for life T

he concept of toxic masculinity has been around forever. But suddenly, the term seems to be everywhere.

Gillette’s viral advertisement which launched earlier this year created a furious debate about masculinity and what it means to be toxic. The popular term points toward very real problems of male violence and sexism. But it risks misrepresenting what actually causes them. It left a generation of men feeling confused about what it means to be masculine, and at what point does it represent toxicity. James Bond, the epitome of “toxic masculinity,” does not cry at Taylor Swift concerts. But, his archetype is desired by women and envied by men. A term like toxic masculinity, even if we sense some truth in it, doesn’t invite us to distinguish between ourselves as individuals and the culture we are caught up in. In raising good men or being a good man, it’s important to embrace the traits of masculinity while ensuring our sons become kind, compassionate humans. It’s recognising that not all masculinity is toxic.

(not just for females but anyone who needs it), give compliments where due, give your partner or friend a jacket if they are cold, give your seat up for those who need it on public transport. Stand up straight with your shoulders back, show the world that you are someone! Take responsibility for your actions and what’s happening in your life. You are the driving force behind your success. Everyone else is doing the same thing, so if you don’t take action you will be left behind. Stop blaming others for your lack of success. You, and you alone, are the key to your own happiness. HAVE A MENTOR - In life this can be a father figure who you admire and want to be like. Talk with them in-depth about questions you have and listen to the lessons that they will tell you. Talk to those who are more successful than you and find out how they achieved their success. Always strive for improvement but recognise and celebrate your own strength and success.

BE COMPETITIVE - Strive to be the best in your chosen field. Don’t lose your competitive edge when people say it isn’t 'nice' or 'cool' to be the best. But be humble while being a high achiever. Recognise the people that helped you get there, be supportive of other participants. If you can pass on some hints and tips to someone not as good as you it will make their day and make you a better person for it. WE WIN OR WE LEARN - Find people who are better than you at your chosen field. Compete against them, observe how they operate and learn lessons from them. Winning all the time is a nice short-term feeling, but it will stunt your personal and professional growth. Seek out the best and challenge them. Getting beaten can be humbling but a brilliant development experience. Thankfully, change is already happening. Good, decent, empowered men are working to change the culture of manhood, based on some simple truths. Men do not want to be angry or aggressive. Let us stop pathologizing masculinity. Instead, let us appreciate the endless ways by which men and women are similar to one another, as well as the important ways in which the two sexes differ.

Students making a splash While reading, writing and arithmetic have long been the cornerstones of academic success, St Catherine’s Catholic College in Proserpine also encourage students to excel in extracurricular activities. Some of their boldest and brightest are making a splash in both sport and the arts; performing in the school’s musical, Singin’ in the Rain and claiming championship medals at the Queensland Schools Swimming Championships. YEAR 12 PERFORMERS NATHANIEL SAVY AND ZAC MAYNARD. Rehearsing three times per week, Nathaniel Savy

and Zac Maynard are part of the cast for St Cath’s annual musical, Singin’ in the Rain. Both were drawn to music and acting from a young age, but for different reasons. Nathaniel said, “I have been an aspiring actor for as long as I can remember. After watching a cruise ship performance, I started dance in 2015 and haven’t looked back.” Nathaniel has taken on a variety of characters, including Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Lord Farquaad in Shrek the Musical. Music has been a part of Zac’s life for as long as he can remember. “My Dad is in a band and I’m a pianist, so it was a natural progression for

music and acting to come together,” he said. In the musical, Nathaniel is taking on the challenging role of Don Lockwood, a film star in 1927, while Zac plays his best mate, a renowned Hollywood musician, Cosmo Brown. With plenty of drama, it’s a performance not to be missed. Nathaniel and Zac both aspire for an artinspired career after graduation. Zac is keen in theatrical arts and hopes to study theatre acting in London as an exchange student through University. Nathaniel is planning to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts to pursue his dream of performing professionally.

YEAR 8 SWIMMERS JY PARKINSON AND JACOB DEWIS Jy Parkinson and Jacob Dewis are no strangers to diving head-first into a challenge. Both started swimming at a young age and love the personal goalsetting that comes with the sport. Jacob started swimming lessons at sixmonths-old and enjoys the competitive factor of swim meets, knowing he has to give 100 per cent with every race. He trains four times per week and also plays AFL to keep fit. Jy started swimming at eightyears-old, trains five to six times per week and competes in athletics and soccer for cross-training.

At the State Championships, both boys performed at their best, coming away with PB’s for almost all of their races. They were part of the North Queensland Medley Relay team which came away with a bronze medal in the 13-14 age category. Jacob also came 5th in the 50m butterfly and finished in the top 10 in the 50m and 100m freestyle. Jy competed in a variety of swims, but his strongest event is the backstroke. He received two thirds and a second in the 50m, 200m and 100m backstroke events respectively. For more information on life at St Catherine’s Catholic College, visit prspne.catholic.edu.au.

ell known nationally as one of the best fishing locations in Australia, Mackay and the Whitsundays provides a literal fish bowl to wet a line. DO I NEED A FISHING PERMIT? Anglers do not require a license to fish recreationally in Queensland, except if fishing in some stocked impoundments. It is unlawful to sell fish without a permit. These stocked impoundments are usually dams. Unlike saltwater locations fishing in freshwater will require the use of a lure as opposed to bait. Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) Before you go fishing in any of Queensland's dams, check whether you need a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP). There are 63 stocked dams in Queensland where a SIP is required to fish, and the one permit covers all dams and costs as little as $10 per week or $50 per year. If you are under 18 you don't need one at all. Visit qld.gov.au/recreation for a full list of the 63 dams. of the northern tropical reef species and the southern demersal species. Not to mention the weaving mangroves of coastal rivers, a sandy estuary or an inland dam. It is Australia’s big game fishing area, and during the spring and summer months game fishermen come from around the world in hopes of catching a record sailfish, a black marlin or bluefin tuna.

LESSER-KNOWN FISHING HOT-SPOTS

Pioneer Point (Whitsundays)

Seaforth

Close to Airlie Beach, here you will catch all types of reef fish including Coral Trout. This place is well worth a fish. There is a nice drop off and the bottom has a lot of fringing coral formations for the fish to hide. A few hundred meters away there is Pioneer Rocks, here you can catch all your reef fish. If you have a floating line out the back, you can also hook a mackerel and other pelagic species.

The boat ramp is located on the Seaforth Port Newry Road and is widely recognised as one of the best boat ramps in Queensland. It launches boats straight into Victor Creek which has an enviable reputation as an excellent place to fish. Tip for fishing: A depth sounder is vital in these creeks so that you can locate the deeper holes for your live bait and also to locate the shallow rock bars that could be a potential boating hazard.

Fish’n Tips

Bakers Creek

• Target the fish you want to catch.

Bakers Creek is a 1 km wide tidal creek that essentially forms the southern boundary of Mackay. Dense mangroves fringe the creek shores and 2 to 3 km of tidal flats extend offshore from the mouth. High tide fishing. A shallow sand bar which drops steeply into a deepwater pool where rock formations are present, provides an ideal fish holding structure. Barra, jacks, mud crabs, bream, whiting, flathead, grunter and prawns are all caught within the creek.

• Adjust your tackle, bait and line accordingly. Ask local fishing shops and bait providers for local hints and tips.

Tip for fishing: Launch on the rising tide and get out before the tide falls too far otherwise you can easily become beached.

• You don't need a boat. • Mackay and the Whitsundays have a myriad of land-based fishing locations. • Get the good bait. • Check that your bait isn’t freezer burnt. There are plenty of fresh bait options throughout the region to increase your chances of success. • Don't over weigh your line.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR!

ARE YOU USING

PROTECTION? barramundi • A 6kg line is all you need locally (rivers, creeks and dams) and it's important to only use a pea shape sized sinker to avoid startling the fish. For coral fishing, some fishermen recommend a 25kg strain due to the roughness of coral on gear. • Aim closer to shore when casting out. • A lot of fish can be caught in ankle to knee depth of water. • Don't be lazy. • Lure the fish to the bait by slowly winding the reel to attract the fish to the bait movement. • Look for the current and gutters. • In lower tides you can often see where the current is flowing and where the gutters are. By throwing the line into the current the bait can appear more animated to the fish • Watch the tide. • When fishing locally chances can be increased if you watch the tide. First two hours of the run into high tide or the last two hours of the run out of high tide are recommended. If fishing along the Pioneer River allow an extra two hours before the high tide makes it upstream. Reef Fishing Fish over the edge of the reef one hour before or after high tide for best results: early morning and evening are also better than when the sun is high. Night-time on a rising tide can be excellent. Trolling along the edge of a reef may also produce dividends. Game Fishing Game fishing for black marlin and sailfish is well worth a try out in the Shipping Channel wide of Scawfell or Calder islands over the summer months, best period between September and January. BEST OF THE BEST Best family-friendly fishing spots Mackay Marina (inner rock wall)

A Binding Financial Agreement aka “Pre-nup” may not be something you want to discuss as pillow talk or during your wedding plans but is it something that both parties should stop and consider? SO, WHO SHOULD BE CONSIDERING A BINDING FINANCIAL AGREEMENT: • Anyone starting a serious relationship with more money or assets than their partner; • Anyone who is starting a new relationship and already has children that they want to protect financially; • Anyone with a business or investment, or who may be expecting an inheritance in the future, that they want to preserve; and • Anyone who wants to ensure that, in the event their relationship doesn’t work out, they don’t end up in an expensive court battle fighting over property. A Binding Financial Agreement can be compared to a form of insurance that you hope you never need to claim on.

ou’re never far from culinary perfection in Hong Kong; the city has stamped its authority as one of the best places on earth for gastronomy. Whether you’re walking down the hectic streets of Mong Kok or exploring the trendy enclaves of the SoHo district, bronzed glossy geese and charbarbecued squid hang from hooks in shop windows. It was in this busy city where Ken Chiu learned his culinary craft. “During High School, I realised I wanted to be a chef. I began my apprenticeship with a large company, Maxim’s Catering. Here I learned everything as the company includes many food businesses and restaurants. It wasn’t unusual to cook for groups of 300 or 400 people,” Ken said.

In 2012 he moved to Brisbane and worked as a chef for three years, most recently at The Imperial on the Brisbane riverfront. The Imperial is a well-known Chinese seafood restaurant, specialising in authentic cuisine inspired by modern Cantonese flavours. For a change of lifestyle, he moved to Mackay four years ago, where he became Head Chef at Tropical Phoenix Garden Restaurant on River Street. “I much prefer Mackay to Brisbane,” Ken said. “Everything here is just easier. I don’t have to sit in traffic for an hour, here I’m only five minutes away from work,” he added. Ken moved to Mackay with his family and is a father of two daughters. He enjoys the relaxed lifestyle and spends time with his children when he’s not at the restaurant.

“Susur Lee, a famous chef in Canada who was born in Hong Kong. He was a finalist in Top Chef Masters and only the second Canadian chef to appear on Iron Chef America.” What kind of food do you cook for yourself at home? “Traditional Chinese food, it’s very different to how Australian’s know Chinese food. In China, it’s traditional to cook one type of food per plate, not mix everything on the same plate. So, at a mealtime, you would have one or two plates of meat and one or two plates of vegetables. I like to cook slow-cooked pork and beef. Simple but delicious.” What are you passionate about outside of work? “I like to spend my spare time thinking about food and how I can improve. I like to research new recipes and techniques for inspiration and always strive to be better.”

John and Elizabeth McIntosh have developed TUFMINDS; an innovative mental wellbeing and suicide intervention program that is provided as a FREE smartphone app. TUFMINDS is designed to build mental resilience as well as provide advice and support for those with mental illness, in an effort to reduce the rate of suicide. TUFMINDS is supported by the Exqisit Life Foundation, formed by John and Elizabeth. The inspirational doctors have donated years of time and expertise into the TUFMINDS project,

not taking a wage for their work, to provide this life-saving tool to the community free of charge. Many volunteers have also dedicated time and effort into the creation of this app. To spread the message, upgrade the app and include new modules for children and Indigenous groups, the Exqisit Life Foundation is hosting Mackay’s TUFMINDS Gala, a glamourous event like no other to raise funds for the continual progression of the TUFMINDS app.

THE GALA Mingle with celebrities under The Marquee at the Mackay Marina and be entertained by guest speakers and live music, enjoy a premium fourhour food and beverage package and then bet the night away in a Casino Royale themed games night.
