In this issue of Core Life Magazine we showcase our annual Mind, Body and Soul feature, with a focus on self-care that could not be more poignant in my life right now. As many of you know, I have just had a baby, little Reef who is three months old. I have also started back at work doing a job I love. Balancing the two is a relentless rollercoaster ride and without looking after myself I don’t think I could survive. For my mind, I challenge myself creatively every day that I work. For my body, I take a walk along the Airlie Beach Boardwalk for an hour each morning with my son and my mum. And for my soul, I pour myself a generous glass of wine at the end of the day! Apparently, the Health & Beauty industry is the fastest growing industry in the world; it is seriously big business! Looking after ourselves used to be considered an indulgence, a vanity or a job for the medical profession but it has now become a smart thing to do and our own responsibility.

Favourite Music: Grunge Favourite Quote: Courage is being scared but doing it anyway Tell us something most people don’t know about you: Hmm, there’s not much as I work on a very public platform! I have a weird obsession with all things clear If you live in Moranbah you will probably know Alaina’s smiling bubbly personality from the local radio. Or maybe you have seen her at the local community events she is often supporting.

Star Sign: Virgo Favourite Movie: Jobs (Steve Jobs Movie ) Favourite Colour: Grey Favourite Holiday Destination: Switzerland Favourite Music: R n B Favourite Quote: You must first BE who you really are, then DO what you need to do, in order to HAVE what you want Tell us something most people don’t know about you: My career in McDonald’s started when I was just fourteen years old For many of us, when we think of McDonalds we think of burgers and fries. For Jaide, however, being a supervisor at McDonalds has created amazing opportunities travelling the world and enabled her to own her own house at the age of 27.

Growing up in Tieri and moving to Moranbah with her now-husband when she was 19, Alaina is our local coal mining town’s biggest fan!

Originally from Brisbane, Jaide moved to the Whitsunday in 2013 and dreams of owning her own McDonald’s one day. Her career has taken her to London where she was selected to work at a McCafe in the Athletes Village during the Olympics and even saw Usain Bolt!

“I love these coal mining towns with every piece of my being,” she says, “so I love being able to be so involved with everything that goes on.” Alaina is as passionate about community life as she is her family and has three teenage daughters aged 18, 14 and 12 who keep her busy. She loves the outdoors and can often be found traipsing around the countryside with her camera and her family or participating in an ocean swim whenever she can. Alaina is also a keen artist, a talent she loves to share with the Moranbah community by holding regular ‘Sip and Paint’ events. “I love seeing people really surprise themselves with their abilities (when they come to one of my events)” she says, “ I have had so many people walk through the door assuring me they can’t draw stick people, and leave with a wonderful, unique and really great piece of art.” Alaina also loves working on her own art and one of her life’s ambitions is to amass enough pieces for her own exhibition at the Coal Face art gallery. You can hear Alaina three times a week on 4RFM Moranbah and listen to her weekly wrap-up of the coalfields on ABC Tropical North. 10 www.corelife.com.au

Back in Australia, she enjoys inspiring young people who start working at McDonalds. “For a vast majority of our staff,” says Jaide, “it is their first job. We take pride nurturing and providing a great first job experience, implementing systems and training for future workplace/social skills and having fun! We work to inspire, grow and develop our staff.” In her spare time Jaide enjoys going to Crossfit or the gym, playing Social Netball, listening to audio books while driving, cooking, going to the beach and learning about new things. She is also an active member of the community and has recently joined the Whitsunday Chamber of Commerce Committee. On top of that, Jaide loves raising money for the Ronald McDonald house in Townsville and is Co-Chair of the committee. She would like to invite us all to the Whitsunday RMHC Ball, held on 18th Nov at The Mantra Club Croc in Airlie Beach. Let’s all show our support and meet her there!

Bianca was born in a little town called Howlong in Wadonga, country Victoria. She moved to Airlie with her family when she was ten and loves living in the area where she has made some great friends. "Without them I wouldn’t be who I am today!” She says, “I’ve had a rough journey growing up and being bullied all throughout my school years and I thank all my friends who helped me become who I am today.” Despite being bullied, Bianca has achieved so much and now wishes to encourage other young people who might be disillusioned or struggling with life to push ahead as the outcome will be worth it.

MORANBAH MUCH MORE THAN MINING

Carved from the bush, Moranbah rose from the red soil of what was the Grosvenor Downs Cattle Station in the early 1970’s. Historically, it is a new town, but the lives and legacy which still remain in the town today are as rich as the coal extracted from its surrounds. Moranbah was constructed to house workers for the new mines under development, Goonyella and Peak Downs. Moranbah was strategically placed in the middle of these mines. The then owners of Goonyella, the Utah Development Company, were ordered by Queensland Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, to build a town to house the mine workers to provide an adequate lifestyle for their families before any coal was to be extracted from the ground. Moranbah, and many more mining communities were formed. Goonyella Mine began production in 1971. The large coking coal mine began its life in 1971, located 30 kilometres north of the town of Moranbah. The Goonyella Mine merged with the adjacent Riverside open cut mine in 1989 but the Riverside deposit became depleted in 2005. It is now owned and operated by BMA, a joint partnership comprising BHP Billiton Limited and Mitsubishi Corporation. While houses were under construction, mine workers lived in modest caravans as the early pioneers trekked across a hot and barren landscape in search of new beginnings. There were “few” services in the town, little or no air conditioning to combat the forty degree days and the 200km drive to Mackay was mainly one-lane and unpaved.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Goonyella Mine is one of several BMA owned and operated mines located in the Bowen Basin making BMA the largest coal exporter in Australia and the largest supplier of seaborne coking coal in the world.

The Heart of the Isaac What’s in a name? Did you know that the streets in Moranbah are predominantly named after people of historic importance? Thanks to the Moranbah and District Support Services for providing this informative list on its website, these are a few from the many nods to great Australians. Belshore Street Mervyn Belshore, a champion athlete from Clermont and World War II Veteran. Bernborough Avenue Bernborough, a famous racehorse from Queensland who is commemorated in the township of Oakey with a life-size bronze statue. Elliot Street Herb Elliot, Olympic athlete, arguably the world's greatest middle distance runner of his era. Fraser Street Dawn Fraser, champion swimmer and Australia’s greatest Olympic champion. Lawson Drive Henry Lawson, Australian writer and bush poet. Moranbah Hits the High Notes In recent years, Moranbah has gained national recognition for producing some of Australia’s talented singers. Clint Boge – lead vocalist (2000-2012, 2017-present) for alternative metal band, The Butterfly Effect. Solo artist - ‘Songs of a Delicate Nature.’ Talia Gouge - competitor on 'X Factor' in 2012 and 'The Voice' in 2014. On The Voice, Talia was the youngest ever finalist in Voice history. Her country pop vibe was successful in making it into Joel Madden’s top four to compete for the title. Brooke Schubert – Moranbah’s most recent The Voice star landed a spot on Seal’s team in 2017. In 2014, Brooke joined Keith Urban on his Australian Tour after posting a video on YouTube titled Dear Keith Urban, asking to sing with him at his show in Townsville.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL MAYOR ANNE BAKER Supporting local businesses within the heart of our towns is an important step toward diversifying an economy away from one main economic driver. As Mayor Cr Anne Baker explains, spending as little as $5 in a local business can generate $8M within the local economy, creating nine additional jobs within a community. “A small moment like this can have an enormous impact on Isaac’s future, which is why Council and the Local Buying Foundation launched the Love Your Local programme. This incentive initiative encourages visitors and locals to shop at participating local businesses for a chance to win a $100 voucher every month.” She said. Having lived in Moranbah for two decades, Mayor Baker understands the importance of a rural town being self-sufficient. She commented, “The convenience of being able to shop locally is definitely a great aspect of shopping locally, not just in Moranbah but across our beautiful Isaac region. We have such a diverse range of businesses here, from automotive suppliers, to great fashion boutiques, to home-based car detailers and nail technicians that it really is possible to address all your shopping needs.” “I also love the fact that in a small community, so many of the business owners are also friends, family and people you know from around town, small community businesses deliver unique products which is lovely in itself to me. It makes spending money in their businesses so much more rewarding, knowing that it’s supporting local families and employment.” The Isaac Regional Council is aiming to invest $97M into key infrastructure and capital projects this financial year. “We’re committed to doing our best to serve our communities, not only for us today, but for generations to come,” Mayor Baker said. Key infrastructure developments include improvements to local roads and water infrastructure plus improvements and upgrades to community facilities such as tennis courts, swimming pools, parks and more. This investment into Isaac communities shows positivity for the mining towns. “Council’s outlook for the wider Isaac region is optimistic as our towns are affordable and make excellent places to live.” With an appreciation for both arts and sport, Mayor Baker is proud of the diverse opportunities available to Isaac communities. “Moranbah’s abundance of exercise options and sporting facilities are a big winner in my eyes. Our community makes great use of the fantastic outdoor Olympic swimming pool, waterpark, playground and heated indoor pool, and we’re lucky to have facilities to cover rugby league, AFL, soccer, netball (my personal favourite), hockey, basketball, tennis and much more.” “If you get down to the fields early in the morning at certain times of year you’re likely to come across wild deer, which is a unique quirk to our town.” “You also can’t beat a stroll down Federation Walk to the iconic Red Bucket, stopping at the exercise stations along the way if you’re feeling particularly energetic!” “However, my favourite time of day out here is definitely the evening. If you’ve ever been in Moranbah to witness our spectacular red sunsets you’ll know that they’re pretty unbeatable.” For more information on the Love Your Local shopping incentive programme, visit Council’s website, www.isaac.qld.gov.au/loveyourlocal or phone 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227)

LOVE YOUR LOCAL MORANBAH

FORGING A FUTURE AND FRIENDSHIPS

T

wo of Moranbah’s early pioneers were Lyn and Noel Busk. Married for only three weeks, the couple left their home in Gladstone to live in a caravan for six weeks while they waited for their home to be built. Noel was a dragline operator at Peak Downs Mine and part of the attractive wages package was a meager payment of less than $20 per week for their three bedroom home. Lyn was a qualified dental nurse when she left Gladstone and was one of the first to work in Moranbah’s newsagency. She was the youngest member of the QCWA and was crowned May Day Queen and Charity Queen in 1973. She won the May Day title 10 years later in 1983! Lyn and Noel started their family two years after their Moranbah arrival with the birth of a son, then had two more within six years. They raised their children in Moranbah and now the three sons who are all married, live in Moranbah with their respective families, and work with their father at Goonyella Riverside Mine. Noel and Lyn now have 10 grandchildren ranging in age from 22 to 4, all but one live in Moranbah. “Moranbah provided everything we needed, even in the beginning. By the time our children went to school there were two kindergartens, two primary schools and a high school. Many wonderful amenities followed the population growth and still today we have access to a wide range of social and sporting facilities as well as health care providers, shopping outlets and a selection of eateries. Moranbah is full of both small and large industry, everything you need is right here, we’ve never found the need to move anywhere else. “Our family, the people and the community are why we stay. We can fly from Moranbah to anywhere in the world if we choose, but coming home is what makes us happiest. You can’t compare city living to the sense of community you have in a town like this,” Lyn said. Friendship is another reason Lyn believes Moranbah is a wonderful place to live. After ‘retiring’ from BMA at 45, she was employed back into the industry as a casual. She ran orientation tours for BMA introducing new Moranbah arrivals to the town, showing them the local amenities. During one of these tours, she met Sofia Hansen. Sofia was a graduate for BMA and Lyn was one of the first people she met in Moranbah. 10 years later, Sofia still lives in Moranbah after moving back with her husband, owns a yoga studio and now as a yoga teacher, Lyn is one of her students. “She remembers me and thanks me often for that initial orientation. There are many connections like this within the town and new generations forging their own friendships, so I feel it is safe to hand over the baton,” Lyn said.

THE MIGHT OF THE It’s the footy club from the bush that attracts the big names. The Moranbah Miners have bred their own home-town heroes and have attracted international superstars from afar, a combination which has seen this isolated club win back-to-back premierships.

The club’s home grounds are at the Darryl Bourke Oval in Moranbah. It fields three grades in the Mackay and District Rugby League competition and has a strong junior league from Under 6’s through to Under 16’s.

MORANBAH MINERS A - GRADE A-Grade Head Coach: David Stevens Nickname: Devo A local through and through, David played all of his footy for Moranbah and was selected to represent Mackay in A-grade competition in 1989.

Background He first stepped up to the role of coach in 1997 for the Under 18 squad and has coached ever since. He coached representative rugby league for young Mackay teams and was then the North Queensland assistant coach for Under 17’s and Under 14’s. In 2016 he was head coach for the North Queensland Under 14’s while in 2014 and 2017 he coached the Mackay Under 16’s to championship medallions both years. This year he is proud to coach the Miners A-Grade team. When he’s not at footy, he works for BMA

His philosophy as a coach, “Keep it simple and coach the core skills.”

Who is the greatest player of all time? Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston as present players and Wally Lewis. They all had so much time to do things on the paddock and the ability to actually win games on their own. Which coach do you look up to? In rugby league, Craig Bellamy because of the passion he shows and how he gets players to believe in themselves to perform every week. I also admire former Australian Men’s Hockey Coach, Ric Charlesworth. He was a great influence in putting hockey on the map. I place a lot of his coaching methods into my own. What passions or hobbies do you have outside of rugby league? My boys Joshua, Blake, Callum and my wife Sheree are my passion. I’m a St George supporter and enjoy helping young players with their weight training at the gym.

4RFM COMMUNITY RADIO The broadcast appealed to a wide demographic and has since evolved from 87.6 Rock FM Youth Radio to 96.9 Temporary Community Radio to its current 4RFM Permanent Community Radio. It is now Moranbah’s primary media hub, with the launch of its own community magazine. Alaina Earl, Magazine Editor and Community Engagement Facilitator, explains how the community radio depends largely on volunteer support. “We have a small group of part-time paid staff who go above and beyond providing many voluntary hours in addition to their relatively small amount of paid hours. This is definitely a love job, and we do really love it! Everyone who is involved in the station has a passion for our local community as well as music. “All of our on-air presenters and programmers are volunteers and we currently have 13 youth presenters and one school-based trainee currently involved at the station. We also have around 12 adult volunteers in our organisation including two women with severe vision impairment. We are one of the few community stations nationally to be 100% locally programmed with local content by local people,” she said. Connecting, entertaining and informing, 4RFM Community Radio Station exists for one reason only, its community. The much-loved creative outlet is Moranbah’s connection to both music and people, providing youth outreach and work experience programmes. The station launched late in 1996 when a youth worker connected with Moranbah families, creating an outlet where youth could commit their energy into a project of their own. For two years it operated out of a donga in Bacon Street as 87.6 Rock FM, run and programmed by the young adults who would regularly sleep over at the station.

She is joined in business by her husband Russell who is an ERT member working in the mines and Emily’s sister, Rachel, who is an ARO at Moranbah Airport. The trio are all passionate about health and wellbeing, with Russell and Rachel experiencing first-hand the benefits from Emily’s massage experience. “I actively work in the business as a massage therapist, a passion which developed seven years ago through researching methodology to assist my own health issues. I kept hitting brick walls until I met a lady who was offering Myotherapy. The treatment changed my life. So much so that soon after I started a course in Myotherapy and have been building my skills and experience ever since. Russell

My husband and sister were my guinea pigs in the early days after seeing the incredible results I had achieved. We have all grown and adapted our own individual knowledge in health to form a clear path for the business.” Emily said.

LOOK SHARP IN THE URBAN JUNGLE ZOOTOWN IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE! Zootown menswear in Moranbah has been helping the men from the mines stand out from the pack for more than 10 years. Now, you don’t have to live in Moranbah to shop its fierce fashion. Owner, Gina Lacey, shares her excitement for the recent launch of their online fashion platform. “Launching our online store will enable us to keep doing what we love; bringing Moranbah and now further afield throughout Australia our best picks of the labels we love. There is a big advantage in shopping with an independent retailer. Other than the benefits to the local economy, you are more likely to find a unique piece of clothing you love. Larger stores tend to purchase large numbers of a few styles, whereas we tend to buy more varieties from our suppliers to deliver a unique selection. Style can come from the most unexpected of places.” She said. Gina co-owns Zootown with her brother, former NRL star, Josh Hannay. After an exciting football career including State of Origin appearances and contracts overseas, Josh retired and returned home to be closer to family and join his sister in business. He is in a coaching role with the Cowboys in Townsville but his passion for style ensures he has regular input into the direction of the business. “Whilst I manage the business I rely on Josh's input in labels and trends. He has a great sense of style and it’s very handy to have a male opinion that I trust in the buying process.” Gina said.

Gina and Josh resurrected Zootown from a closing down sale and have now owned and operated the store for 10 years. Gina has raised her family in Moranbah and says that being her own boss and having fun is what business should be about. She has also been an elected member of the Isaac Regional Council for 14 years. “I have a genuine passion for this community and its future. My judgement in this community shaping role is underpinned by over 40 years of family and personal history here, a core value of fairness and a keenness to embrace change for the better.” She said. KEEPING MORANBAH If your ‘check engine’ light comes on and you find yourself thinking ‘yep, it’s still there,’ it might be time to take your wheels down to Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical (MDTM). We aren’t all mechanically-minded, and that’s ok, because here in Moranbah is one of the best one-stop mechanical shops you’ll find in Queensland. MDTM are a leader in automotive services and repairs, offering a full suite of parts and services, tyres and expert knowledge. Not only an automotive leader in the state, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical are also Australia’s first authorised Repco service centre to be authorised as a Repco stockist for spare parts. No longer do auto enthusiasts need to travel to the big centres for their spare parts and accessories, what you would find in a normal Repco store you can now find in Moranbah. The automotive parts centre is situated beside MDTM, where the camping store once was. Owner, Carolyn Fritz, is delighted to be pioneering this partnership with Repco which has since been replicated in other parts of Australia. “Having both of these authorisations under the Repco umbrella gives us the unique position of being able to offer our clients a one stop Repco shop, with the local knowledge and experience to back it up. “We have consistently expanded and invested in growth strategies, making MDTM a one-stop-shop for all auto electrical, mechanical and tyre requirements.

“We also initiated a ‘Women, Wheels and Automobiles’ service that provides free information sessions covering what to do in a vehicle breakdown, how to change a tyre and how to jump start a vehicle. This program has proved so popular that we also conduct the sessions at Moranbah State High School for Year 11 and 12 students,” Carolyn said. A key part of MDTM’s experience comes from managers, Lance Butcher and Michael Eve.

“Our aim is to create an Automotive Hub in Moranbah, while partnering with other local businesses, to service the entire Bowen Basin as well as Mackay and Emerald. We call this “City to the Bush,” whereby we offer products and services that are so competitive, it attracts clients from further afield,” she said. Not only are MDTM well-known for its exceptional knowledge and service, but also the generous support it gives to the Moranbah community. A regular contributor to local causes, the business contributed more than $42,000 in 2015 to charities and events, including the Relay for Life, Moranbah Early Learning Centre and RACQ Air Rescue. It has been a major sponsor of the Moranbah East State School Garden Party since 2011. A major contributor to the local economy, MDTM employs 30 staff consisting of full-time, part-time and casuals as well as school-based trainees and apprentices from Moranbah High School. This is part of the school’s apprentice and trainee programme, where MDTM currently have nine students taking part at its business.

Lance has been the Tyre Manager for two years, bringing his unique personal touch to the business and taking the time to speak with customers to understand their needs. He has 30 years of industry experience. “The only thing between your car and the road is your tyres, it’s a critical safety component to ensure tyres are performing as they should in all conditions,” he said. Michael is the Workshop Manager and brings 35 years of industry experience, the past five years being part of MDTM. With multiple awards and an extensive list of accreditations to its name, MDTM have achieved high-level recognition within the industry and throughout the Bowen Basin community, exceptional for a local family-owned and operated business. Its six core areas of operation continually evolve to support the growth of Moranbah and surrounds’ needs.

AH REALTY From the suburbs of South Africa to the glitz and glam of the Gold Coast and then the mining town of Moranbah, you won’t find many people with the same global experience of abodes as Annemarie Haywood. Her real estate career began in her home country of South Africa, but describing it as a dangerous place to walk the streets, she moved to Australia in 2003, to provide a better lifestyle for her children. Annemarie quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the Gold Coast’s highest listing agents within six months, securing luxurious beachfront apartment listings and winning REIQ awards.

“Since moving to Moranbah five years ago, this is the first time I’ve felt an uplift in the market. People are positive, house rentals are correcting back up to a rate which is fair for both renters and landlords and average house prices have risen approximately 20 percent since last November. A lot of people are looking for rentals and I’m seeing a lot of new faces in town which is exciting for the community,” she said. Renting, selling or buying, AH Realty are the agency you can depend on.

In 2012, the Gold Coast was experiencing negative growth and Annemarie was seeking a change of lifestyle. After seeing an article on Moranbah on television, she hopped in her car and came for a look. The following week she had moved in to the mining town, a week later establishing her business, AH Realty. Despite being warned that she wouldn’t last six months, having arrived at the tail end of the mining boom, Annemarie had her first 28 clients within a week, testament to her hard-working persona. “People often ask me which agency I took over, they are always surprised to learn that I started from scratch. It’s about being proactive, working hard and offering a high level of service. We are a fun-loving team, progressive, we offer the complete package and work hard for our clients. It’s a simple expectation but one which we deliver and I believe our clients appreciate that,” Annemarie said. She is excited about the current market in Moranbah.

FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR WOMEN

WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT FOR WOMEN TO ACHIEVE FINANCIAL SECURITY? A regular female listener to my radio interviews on Emerald 4HI asks me to voice my views on women and the financial opportunities they often miss out on. Women have done a great job in recent years to improve the gender balance. In Politics, we have women as the leaders of Germany and the United Kingdom. Whether our next Federal Government is Labour or Coalition, it is possible their respective leader could well be female. In the movies, all the old super heroes used to be men and now we have the huge success of Wonder Woman and to top it off a female Doctor Who! Our girls are also doing well in sport. The women’s Seven’s Gold at the Rio Olympics was a national treasure. Roger Federer, after winning Wimbledon again, is being lauded as the greatest tennis player ever. People forget Serena Williams has won more grand slams than Roger. Although doing very well in most areas, financial security for women is often a challenge and difficult to achieve. Here are some findings from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA). Although women usually manage their own finances, superannuation can be a blind spot but men are actually pretty good at Super. According to ASFA, 25% of men know their exact Super balance and women about 13%. Average Superannuation balance upon retirement On average a man in Australia ends work with $295,500 while women end up with about $138,000. Generally, women are on a lesser pay scale, spend time at home with children, deal with divorce and so on. There is another factor, however – a woman’s lack of interest, knowledge and/or understanding of Super.

You were born to smile DR. ROSARIO RODRIGUEZ

28 www.corelife.com.au

It’s the fashion accessory which never goes out of style, your smile.

B

ut not all of us are born with naturally perfect teeth. In fact, many of us as adults have dental imperfections we would like to correct, but thoughts such as ‘I’m too old for braces’ or ‘it’s too expensive’ often prevent the pursuit of the perfect smile. As Dr. Rosario Rodriguez explains, thanks to recent orthodontic technology advancements, it’s easier than ever before to correct those chompers and smile like a champ. “I had braces as a teenager and it was my experience which inspired me to pursue a career in orthodontics.” “I understand the stigma which can come with wearing braces, the teasing or bullying. They used to be uncomfortable to wear and they restricted the types of food you can eat. But with Invisalign® clear aligners and clear braces, the options are plentiful to correct your smile while still feeling confident during the re-alignment process,” she said. Rosario grew up in Mexico and pursued her dental passion in Mexico City where she graduated top of her dental degree class at the University of Mexico. She further pursued this field by completing her master’s degree in orthodontics. She and her husband, Gabriel, moved to Sydney and has called Australia home for the past 23 years. “I love everything there is to love about living in Australia. I’ve travelled around the country on multiple occasions, spending lengths of time exploring remote locations. I spent time on remote cattle stations and immersed myself within the culture of remote aboriginal communities.” “It’s not until you spend time at a very remote location you realise how much we take for granted the conveniences of having fresh milk or bread just down the road,” she said. In Sydney, Rosario completed her ADEC and Master’s in Dental Science (Orthodontics) through the University of Sydney. She joined the Orthodontic Department at Westmead Hospital in Sydney where she treated patients with complex orthodontic needs and was actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. She owned her own private practice in Sydney before moving to Mackay in 2014, where she opened her local orthodontic clinic, Braces 4U. “Our team is extremely passionate about orthodontics and it shows with the level of care and service we provide. It's not just about the smile we

give you; it's about the smile you give us!” “Our patients are welcomed to the practice like family. We are excited about being in the business of building smiles and nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing patients leaving happy and confident with beautiful beaming smiles,” Rosario said. In addition to the state-of-the-art Mackay-based clinic, Rosario also travels to the Whitsundays, working out of clinics in Bowen and Cannonvale, so her patients don’t need to travel as far. “Some appointments may only be 10 minutes, but patients were driving sometimes for hours to see me. I wanted to save them time and money by providing a closer alternative,” she said. Rosario’s most popular solution for correcting crooked teeth is Invisalign® clear aligners. “Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners to move teeth into the correct position. They are such an incredible advancement in orthodontics because they allow patients to smile confidently both during and after their treatment. “Invisalign® Teen is great for teenagers who may otherwise be self-conscious wearing traditional braces and also in some cases you don’t have to wait until they lose all their teeth to start correcting their bites. They don’t have the same complications as traditional braces which make them better for people who live rurally as the likelihood or an orthodontic emergency is drastically reduced. There are also no food restrictions and they are more comfortable to wear than traditional braces.

“Invisalign® really has changed the way we now do orthodontics, but you still need in-depth knowledge on how the teeth can be moved to ensure they are successful. Our team are highly qualified and experienced in this area, it’s what we do, it’s our passion,” Rosario said. She explains that her career is also her passion because it’s an opportunity to change people’s lives. “Such a simple thing, straightening one’s teeth, can result in so many positives for that person. Increased confidence which may lead to finding love or a new career. The thank you hugs we receive mean everything, it’s why we do what we do,” she said. Visit Dr. Rosario and the team at Braces 4U to begin the journey of a lifetime of smiles. www.corelife.com.au 29

rom a young girl in South Korea raising insects as pets to an audiologist in Mackay giving people the gift of sound, Esther Kim’s care and compassion for living beings has been at the heart of her life’s journey. Esther moved to Australia nine years ago and lived in Brisbane. With a fascination for living creatures as a child, she was drawn to biology and studied to become a nurse at Queensland University of Technology. She spent four years working in aged care, where her passion for audiology was awakened after seeing the positive impact it had on the quality of residents’ lives.

Esther pursued her master’s studies in audiology and was drawn to Clarity Hearing Solutions, even though that meant moving from Brisbane to Mackay. “I was attracted to Clarity because it is independent. We are able to choose the most suitable hearing devices for the patient based on their individual circumstances, not manufacturer preference.” “I also love Clarity’s diverse clinical case load, from paediatric to adult patients, cochlear implant and vestibular assessments. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing happy patients after I have provided spot-on solutions to their hearing problems and Clarity’s ethical principles allow me to do that,” she said. Esther says that her move to Mackay was the best move she’s made, despite the scare of surviving her first cyclone earlier this year. “It was the first cyclone I had experienced, now my colleagues call me a true North Queenslander.” “I am enjoying the warmth and sunshine as well as time-out on the weekends exploring the national parks. I’m keen on fishing so if you know any good spots please let me know!” Clarity Hearing Solutions provide audiological services from Ingham to the Gold Coast and inland to Mt Isa with many locations inbetween. Mark Vucak

QUEENSLAND PLASTIC SURGERY

F

rom patient to respected surgeon, Dr. Mark Vucak’s introduction to plastic surgery happened after a surfing trip went horribly wrong. A gas explosion resulted in a fire which would put him in a Perth hospital. Despite the trauma, Dr. Vucak’s experience as a patient would later give him an invaluable perspective while training to become a surgeon.

“Ensure they are properly qualified, and if they are cheap, consider why. I once had a mentor who asked if I would rather have a surgeon who drove a Mercedes or one who drove a broken down old ute. Your body is for life. The cost is soon forgotten but a poor surgical result is there forever.

Dr. Vucak completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Western Australia, while also representing Australia in canoeing at World Championship events. He went on to do a post graduate fellowship in Atlanta, Georgia, in the USA with some of the best breast and cosmetic surgeons in the world. This is the path his career then took.

As well as performing surgery with expert precision, Dr. Vucak explains that aftercare is just as crucial in providing world-class results.

Breast and facial surgery, including rhinoplasty, is Dr. Vucak’s area of interest, but he also performs many body sculpting procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction. His clinic, Queensland Plastic Surgery, has now operated on more than 45,000 patients making it one of Australia’s premium choices for cosmetic procedures. “From a technical point of view, rhinoplasty is the most difficult cosmetic operation and perhaps that’s why I love it, because it is a challenge. When it comes to choosing a surgeon, experience counts for everything and there are many considerations I urge people to consider.

“Elective surgery should be a positive experience. Like the finer things in life, it should be enjoyed,” he said.

“Complications can never be completely eliminated from surgery, but how it is managed is what is important. I had a patient from an out of town location who developed problems with her nasal graft from rhinoplasty. To avoid her having to fly inter-state to see me, I flew to where she was and adjusted it for her in the rooms of a colleague there. “Ensuring the patient is happy is the most important part of the process,” he said. Polly Muller and Jack Adams MR BEAN COLD BREW COFFEE

S

ome call it the elixir of life. For others, it’s a warm embrace which awakens the soul and delivers freshly brewed courage to face a new day.

Of course, we’re talking about the magical bean, coffee, which has created far more fairytale endings than Jack and his beanstalk ever did. Delivering a consistent brew with strong aroma and delicate acidity has seen local cold brew coffee company, Mr Bean, excel in both local and national coffee markets. The brain child of best friends, Polly Muller and Jack Adams, Mr Bean has risen in the ranks of the competitive coffee world, growing its distribution throughout Queensland and impressing in the urban laneways of Sydney and Melbourne. Polly and Jack explain how the business has expanded from the Airlie Markets to café fridges across Australia. “Mr Bean evolved from a pure love of coffee. I have been working with Jack for more than 10 years as a barista while Jack has been managing bars. Jack relocated to Airlie Beach in 2016 and that’s when our experimentation of cold brew coffee began, driven out of a passion for good coffee. “After months of experimentation we started a market stall at the Airlie Beach Markets taking our first 16 bottles of Mr Bean Cold Brew Coffee. Mr Bean was very well received and the growth started from there. We now sell close to 100 bottles of Mr Bean Cold Brew every weekend at the markets and over 500 bottles to stockists across Australia every week,” Polly said. www.corelife.com.au 32

If you’re used to your coffee hot, you may be wondering what cold brew coffee is? Jack explains, “Each bottle of Mr Bean is brewed in chilled filtered water for 22 hours. This allows the cold water to extract the full flavours of the coffee grind whilst lowering the acidity up to 70% compared to regular hot coffee. Our customers use Mr Bean for iced coffees, smoothies, espresso martinis, affogatos, pre-workout drinks and much more.” The business has launched to national and international fame through podcasts, magazines and national newspapers. Polly and Jack designed and built a commercial brewing space for Mr Bean in Cannonvale to allow for expansion and growth of the business. Their success has stemmed from a love of what they do combined with support from the local Whitsunday community. Polly said, “From the very beginning Mr Bean has had amazing support from the Whitsunday region and North Queensland. We are very grateful to have loyal customers who visit us every weekend at the Airlie Beach Markets and proud stockists locally and nationwide.” Jack and Polly have exciting plans for the business in the next 12 months. With new products and a new project launching soon, Jack says, “Watch this space!” To find a bottle of Mr Bean, visit mrbeancoldbrew.com for a list of nearby suppliers and online orders to keep your fridge stocked with espresso to prevent that feeling of a lack of coffee, depresso.

I am not afraid of storms

F

“I am not afraid of storms for I am learning to sail my ship.” Louisa May Alcott

or Leonie Cridland, founder of Deep Tree Life Coaching, these words have come to mean everything.

Sadness, anxiety, stress, depression and overwhelm can all be storms that threaten to sink our ships. “While negative experiences are necessary and meaningful, it is harmful for us to get stuck in these life storms. Like sailing a boat it's the tiny tweaks that make big changes and bring you back into calmer waters.” Having experienced illness and depression herself, she knows how easily stress and a life imbalance can manifest into health problems, depression and anxiety. Now, as a health and wellness coach, her biggest piece of advice is - don't wait to seek help. “I love small business and in the past I ran a successful graphic design business. But that success came at a cost, to my health, relationships and my business.” “I developed a range of niggling illnesses and depression. I remember feeling like a black hole was opening up at my feet. I was so ill, lost, overwhelmed and out of control.” After a long search for solutions the light at the end of the tunnel came when she worked with a life coach.

34 www.corelife.com.au

“It was such an uplifting and productive experience I knew I had found my calling. I decided to train as a Wellness Coach and also completed training as an NLP practitioner including hypnotherapy. Mindfulnessbased stress reduction, meditation and other natural calming techniques have also been my focus” Tackling stress head-on and with safe and natural techniques is key to Leonie’s approach. “Everything has a foundation of stress including depression and anxiety. Leaving stress unmanaged creates harmful long term patterns of thinking and feeling. The longer they build the more control they take. Yet, the good news is that they can be changed. The most important thing is to reach out and get help.” she said. Leonie works with individuals and in the workplace. She says, “I believe in empowering people and organisations with skills that allow them to navigate whatever life throws at them. In the workplace, calmer people means increased productivity, less down time and reduced absenteeism.” Make self-care your priority, learn to manage stress and find life balance. Leonie can be contacted via her website deeptree.com.au or phone 0438 767 148.

Burnt Face Scarred for life

IT WAS A DAY WHICH STARTED WITH SMILES AND ENDED WITH SCARS.

A

sobering reminder that life can change in the blink of an eye, without warning, without provocation or prejudice. From that frightful day, the road ahead was both painful and challenging, yet, Annette Swann’s story isn’t one of selfpity, but one of strength, survival and learning self-love. Growing up in Victoria, Annette’s life changed at a corporate Christmas barbecue. She was nine years old, when the negligent actions of one of the adults present resulted in a explosion which engulfed Annette in flames. “My mum was a fair distance away and looked across at the commotion and thought it was a girl with red hair dancing. She then realised it was me and that I was on fire,” Annette said. The split-second stupidity of one man scarred 30% of Annette’s body, resulting in two or three skin graft operations each week as Annette suffered in hospital for two months. She left hospital covered in a thick ointment and wrapped in bandages with a plaster neck collar, felt compression chin strap and splint on her left arm. This was her appearance for the next two years. Fearing Annette would become a recluse if she stayed at home, she was sent back to school within two weeks after leaving hospital. Relentless bullying ensued with comments such as “freak” a daily occurrence, but the one which hurt most was the chant, “burnt face, burnt face.” “It was the one that really got to me, which is why I chose it for the name of my book. It doesn’t own me anymore, I own it,” she said. Annette’s story, Burnt Face, tells of her ordeal growing up in the notorious suburb of Broadmeadows, known for boisterous youth and gangs during the 70s and 80s. She rebelled against bullying by becoming one herself, choosing strength and survival over torment and torture.

“I wanted to belong, to be accepted. I became outspoken, assertive and on some occasions, aggressive. I made some bad choices, but ultimately, it was about survival and self-defense. The story really delves within the feelings I had growing up as a teenager with facial scars and to deliver a message to other teenagers who are being bullied, to believe in yourself. I know it’s hard now, but trust that it will get better, because it does. “Love yourself for who you are, scars or ‘imperfections’ and all, because it’s those differences that make you individual, interesting and special. Once you learn to love yourself, others will love you and you’ll make positive choices. Life does get better, trust me,” Annette said. Above all else, Annette hopes that her story will allow her own mum to forgive herself. “I want my mum to stop blaming herself for what happened. She was my saviour through everything, she gave me my strength. I want to thank her for everything she’s ever done for me.” Annette’s account of her journey is truly inspirational, a must-read for anyone who has faced bullying in their life. The official launch for her novel, Burnt Face, is at the Northern Beaches Bowls Club, on October 11, from 5pm until 6:30pm. Mayor Greg Williamson, is a guest of honour and Annette will be available for book signings. Burnt Face can be purchased at the launch, or pre-order yours now on the website; www.annetteswann.com/burntface

makemeOVER! THE AMAZING TRADIE MAKEOVER - J A M E S W H I T E H E A D MY LIFE CHANGING TRANSFORMATION THEY SAY THAT LIFE BEGINS IN YOUR FORTIES. For James Whitehead, that couldn’t be truer. Not only did he give himself a new name, but thanks to a makeover from Core Magazine’s business partners, James is smiling more than ever before. “I lost seven years of hair and gained a lifetime of teeth. I’m wearing clothes I never thought I’d see myself in and I feel the best I ever have. I left the process in everyone else’s hands and I’m just wrapped,” James said with a grin. Having been a landscaper for half of his life, James is an expert at keeping lawns and yards immaculate, yet he needed help with a trim and tidy of his own appearance. “My bosses at Whitpro game me the kick up the bum I needed to apply. I wouldn’t have been able to do this myself,” he said. His gardening career has taken him from the outback to the Gold Coast, back to the barren soil of Birdsville before a trip to visit his parents in the Whitsundays

inspired the move to the tropics. “Three months later I was moving to the Whitsundays. I met Tim, the owner of Whitpro, and after finding out my experience he hired me and I’ve been with them for seven years. “My name is actually Timothy, but with two Tim’s it got too confusing. I’d just turned forty, and I’d heard that life begins at forty, so I thought, I was given two names, Timothy James, I’d already used one for the first forty years so it was time to use the other. So now everyone knows me as James,” he said. An outdoors person by nature, James is certain he’s found his calling as a gardener. “I feel free when I’m in the garden. I don’t know much but I know I have green thumbs. I’m out in the elements, it’s somewhere I belong,” he said. For someone who used to rarely smile because of being self-conscious about his teeth, you can’t stop James from grinning. “I haven’t stopped smiling, my cheeks are that sore! Who knew it hurt so much to smile all the time! I’m so grateful to everyone who made this possible. “When I was getting my hair done I received a compliment about how lovely my smile was. I’d never had that before and they didn’t know I’d just had my teeth done. It was the most uplifting experience, I’ll never forget it.”

Working on James to assist in his overall makeover was an honour. From the moment we all met James, we could see he was a genuine, caring and an honest man, so it was a privilege to be a part of his transformation. When James arrived he had scruffy, long and unmaintained hair. At first glance, I knew there was a handsome man hiding underneath and it was my job to bring this side out in him. My first job was to send him to a Barber’s for a tidy up of his beard then immediately afterwards I sat him in my seat and cut his ponytail off! This would have been a big moment for James as I believe he had been sporting a ponytail for many years. In fact, he told me afterwards that he hadn’t even had a trim for seven years! Straight away he looked lighter and fresher without it. There was no need to change his colour as he had natural highlights from working outside so we gave him a style-cut that he could easily maintain. With his new style, James was very attentive and listened carefully to my instructions on how to style his new hair using all of the 36 www.corelife.com.au

American Crew products we offer. Before his visit to the salon James confessed he washed his hair with soap! It was such a pleasure to help with James’s transformation and the highlight of my experience was seeing him look in the mirror at the end and smile from ear to ear!

TEETH: SMILE MAKERS WHITSUNDAYS Dentist: Dr. Prashant First of all, it was a pleasure to treat James (Timothy Whitehead) and bring his smile and funny character back. James presented to our surgery to get his badly damaged teeth fixed. He wanted a decent smile and to be able to eat nice food. During his first appointment, we took a detailed medical history, and also his expectations at the end of the treatment. After this we conducted a thorough examination of his mouth and teeth and then discussed a range of treatment options with advantages and disadvantages. The treatment we eventually decided upon for James was to; 1 Extract the teeth which are badly broken down and couldn’t be restored 2 Clean the remaining teeth to stabilise the gums 3 Restore the remaining teeth with resin veneers 4 Take impressions to make top and bottom partial dentures The end result is amazing. James’s confidence increased and he got back his happy smile. To make the treatment more affordable, we organised an interest-free payment plan called My Smile Plan.

FACE: AIRLIE DAY SPA STYLING: Z OOTOWN MORANBAH

Beautician: Hannah HANNAH STARTED THE TREATMENT BY ENSURING JAMES WAS COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED. After assessing his skin type, a double cleanse was performed to remove any environmental deposits on the surface. A toner was then used to remove any residual cleanser and prepare the skin for the exfoliator with melt-in marine crystals to start the exfoliation process which was removed with a hot towel. At that point, protective eyewear is donned by client and therapist to protect the eyes from the microdermabrasion crystals. Starting on a setting of 10, using the Thalgoskin Expert machine, Hannah worked methodically across the face ensuring all areas were covered and increasing the setting gradually to ensure best results are achieved without causing discomfort to the client. After a few passes across the whole area, a mask is applied to reduce pores before a sunscreen, moisturiser and eye cream are applied to complete the treatment. Finally, James was given aftercare advice regarding sun protection as microdermabrasion reveals new skin that is more sun sensitive.

COLONICS AND ULTRASONIC FOR A COMPLETE INSIDE OUT CLEANSE TO LOOK AND FEEL GREAT At Bottoms Up we don’t think that you can get a much better cleanse than one of our closed soaking method of colonics, it really is the Rolls Royce of cleansing. So to find a therapy that supports this cleanse is not an easy ask. After all we only want the best. And then we discovered, a little by mistake that the ultrasonic liposuction works on breaking down fat, (and we know that toxins are stored in in fat cells.) We don’t want the fat or toxins. The Ultra sonic works on the lymphatic, blasting inside and outside of the cell that causes the fat cell to rupture and thereby achieve effects of shape definition and for us moving those hard to shift fat cells full of toxins. These toxins are than picked up the lymphatic system, which are transported to the colon for removal with our soaking method of colonics. While removing these toxins we are hydrating the body to rejuvenate the liver that improves metabolism. So for the crazy healthy people this is like a big WOW, as now all of a sudden it is easy to target the toxins trapped in the fat cells that take the load off the lymphatic. For the people who have that bit of stubborn cellulite or extra bits where they are not wanted, even with diet and exercise, this duel approach works miracles. For us in the clinic we are seeing that we are offering something that not only makes you very well taking a load off all off your lymphatic, liver, and colon, but also makes you look and feel so much better. To have a lipo session and than follow this up with a closed colonic to ensure removal of what has been broken down we find gets the best results. This treatment really is a win win treatment that keeps on giving for awesome health, vitality and looks.

A GIRL WITH A DREAM BECOMES A WOMAN WITH A VISION. Since becoming an apprentice, Kendell Davies dreamed of owning her own salon. At 21 after having experienced six years in the hairdressing industry, she turned her dream into a reality reaching for higher goals. “It was a big decision to leave the security of full-time employment to become a business owner, but in order to succeed in my profession I knew I had to be ambitious. “Fortunately, I had support from friends and family who encouraged my vision. I often look back at the weeks leading up to the salon opening having moments of self-doubt. It was then that my Dad reassured me that those nerves were a good thing, because he knew I would give this venture 110% to make it work,” Kendell said. A year since opening, Kendell’s salon, Urban Hair, has become a Proserpine institution for hair and beauty innovation. The team keeps up-to-date with latest trends, techniques and products to ensure that what is being delivered to their clients match top salons, to offer locals the same class and culture they would find in a city. “The team attended Sydney Hair Expo in June to further our knowledge and skills and I followed that up with a trip to the Brisbane Hair and Beauty Expo in July,” Kendell said. It is the passion and professionalism of Kendell’s team which allows Urban Hair to produce phenomenal results. “I am fortunate to be working alongside two talented individuals Debbie Muller and Alyse Talbot. Both girls were born here in the Whitsundays. Debbie has more than 30 years’ experience as a senior stylist. Alyse is due to complete her apprenticeship at the end of this year. “Our team shares the common passion for being the best we can be within our profession.” Support from home is close at hand with Tracey, Kendell’s mother, working behind the scenes assisting with the administration and marketing side of the business. With a modern and welcoming vibe, relaxation begins as soon as you enter the salon. A welcome refreshment sets the opening tone for a pampering experience, complemented by reclining massage chairs. Despite these luxuries, Urban Hair strive to remain affordable, to give everyone the opportunity to experience luxe service.

HOW DO WE LIVE A TOXIC FREE LIFE? HOW TOXIC IS YOUR LIFE?

Be toxic Free rpose live your pu

The issue with toxicity surrounding us daily is that each of these toxins embeds itself in each cell which will at a later date manifest as a dis-ease. To connect to self, to your Spirit your life purpose you first have to remove this stagnation that keeps you heavy, unwell and stuck in life. We hear daily the issue with toxicity in our lives and the importance of clean eating along with drinking plenty of water. But where is the toxicity in other parts of your life that are causing you symptoms and stopping you living to your potential.

Toxicity is cumulative, that is it will continue to store until it manifests as a disease. Which often presents as a symptom that is treated without looking at the underlying issue, toxicity in your cells, that are literally draining your life force.

Toxicity lives inside all of us fat skinny, young and old. In fact, we now have studies showing newborns with more than 200 toxins in their umbilical cord! You can be highly toxic and not yet feel ill, it is like extra weight you carry around either embedded in your organs or in your fat cells, your body trying to store it anywhere to keep you well. But this weight doesn’t show up on the scales, rather it shows up in your day to day health and vitality, your connection to yourself, your connection and drive to live your life purpose, your spark that makes you excited about life. Unfortunately, we have to many people treating the symptoms of this toxicity with anti- depressants, ant-anxiety, uppers, alcohol, pain killers, hormone balances, anti-inflammatory, steroids, the list goes on.

So, if you want to get on track, find or live your life purpose, be connected to yourself your Spirit, cleaning up the vehicle that you are carrying it all around in is imperative. Otherwise you will never get off the roundabout, you will be blaming others for your miserable life, and daily not liking yourself. This is not your spirit talking this is your body trying to get you to listen, its not happy.

Toxicity that we don’t think about is what bath in, what products we put on our skin. Skin is absorbent, what you put on or in goes within for your body to deal with. Implants, fillers, Botox are all toxic substances many of us carry around without thinking what harm they are doing to our body, that headache that lingers, the eyesight that is gradually getting worse, the gripey moods…… And then we have all of the radiation waves whether it be the microwave you use to heat your food in, the phone you are talking on, the power lines you live under, the Wi-Fi you live in, the x-rays you have these are all causing toxicity to your body.

Supplements used for cleansing from the toxicity is dependent on what you are wanting to cleanse from and how well you are. Is it heavy metals, or is it parasites or is it a bad bacteria or yeast. Speaking with your alternate health professional will help with this. Enemas at home is another to support your bodies elimination channels as is skin brushing and lymphatic cleansing. Having a closed Colonic at Bottoms Up allows your Lymphatic, your liver, your blood your nervous system along with your colon to cleanse. This allows stagnation to move out and life purpose to come in, in fact this is why I started colonics way back when. Our body has trillions of cells, all with the potential to carry toxicity or health What lifestyle do you choose?

Your body, your life, your purpose RELEASE TOXINS AND BUILT UP WASTES TO GET YOUR BODY BACK ON TRACK.

TENSION HEADACHES, ACHING MUSCLES, FATIGUE AND SLEEPLESSNESS.

I

n today’s hectic world, we pass these symptoms off as ‘just a part of life’ and will often mask how we feel with medication to get through the day.

But this only creates a ferris-wheel effect, where we go around and around in a dizzying haze, wondering if there will ever be a time we can just get off the ride. As a journalist, I’m guilty of this myself. Approaching deadline, I’ll spend 12 hours or more per day hunched over my computer to get the job done. I’ll go to bed with aching muscles, emotionally and mentally exhausted, yet unable to sleep due to my mind racing in panic over the work I still need to finish. I found it ironic that I was spending the month writing about health and wellness, yet I was letting my own health suffer. So instead of reaching for the ibuprofen and sleeping pills, I looked for a holistic approach to give my mind and body the release it craved. eXQisit You Luxury Day Spa at the GP Superclinic in Ooralea changed my perception of what a spa is truly supposed to be. I was welcomed by owner and reverand, Elizabeth McIntosh, who explained that an authentic spa is a place of healing opposed to a place of cosmetic beauty.

Amanda Wright Journalist Core Life Magazine

“Authentic spa uses ancient healing traditions with treatments based on wellness rituals. The body is very capable of healing itself, given the right environment,” she said.

The treatments at eXQisit You vary in tradition, from an Auryvedic wand massage to Himalayan salt or Asian bamboo sticks. The Tibetan hot stones have been individually blessed by a priest and the Shirodhara third eye oil dripping treatment is the only one of its kind in Mackay. These treatments are specifically designed to enhance mental and physical wellbeing. After sipping on a warm ginger tea and cooling my face with a refreshingly cool peppermint towel, I was led into a candle-lit room with soothing music for an exotic aromatherapy oil full body massage. I wrapped my body in a Balinese silk sarong and dipped my feet into an aromatherapy foot soak with salt scrub. Moments later I was face down on the table, in awe of my massage therapist who knew exactly how much pressure to apply to make my body surrender to the relaxation. Through the table I gazed upon the gentle flicker of candlelight before shutting my eyes and letting my subconscious float to a place of Zen which I rarely find time to visit. The warm oil, infused with pure aromatherapy, is designed to relieve emotional and physical tension to synergise the body. I felt miles away from reality. During the scalp massage, it felt like the headaches were being extracted from my head. Of course, I didn’t want it to end and when my time was up, I felt like liquid sand spread over the massage table, the candlelight beckoning me to continue to soak up the calm. The experience finished with a cool glass of water and fresh fruit. It was exactly what my body had been craving and I lapped it up with glee while I felt euphoric at having experienced something truly special. I had a marvelous sleep that night. When it comes to hearing loss, men are the weaker sex! Did you know hearing loss is much more common in men than in women! But why is this? Now, I’m sure you all have your theories as to why this might be and have heard the typical cliché or joke: “My partner’s the reason I’m going deaf!”. But, various studies do show that the most common factor for hearing loss in men is what’s called industrial deafness. Industrial deafness is usually acquired by working in heavily male dominated industries such as construction or factory work where it is quite noisy or operation of machinery is occurring on a regular basis. Surprisingly, even long distance truck drivers can suffer hearing damage by having the window down and the wind blowing past their ears for long durations. And it’s not just loud noises or

constant noise that can cause issues. There is some concern that hearing loss and tinnitus can be caused by certain medications, in particular aspirin and ibuprofen. Both drugs are often recommended to treat aches and pains and very commonly, headaches. Some blokes will joke that this a catch-22 situation. They say their wives are constantly nagging them and so they take aspirin for the subsequent headache that causes! The truth in this may in fact be that the “nagging” may simply be due to the male partner suffering from hearing loss and can’t hear. So the wife has to repeat herself. The flipside of this of course is the frustration that comes from living with, or being around

someone with hearing loss. It can become a very lonely time for both parties and distance between one another can be unintentionally created often leading to further health issues as well as depression or feeling isolated. Prevention of hearing loss is important for both men and women and can be as easy as ensuring safety equipment is worn at work and wherever appropriate. Other areas of prevention within the household and between partners however, may be somewhat out of depth for an audiologist! If prevention has failed and someone you know does suffer from any form of hearing loss there are answers. Treatment of hearing loss, such as the fitting of hearing aids, often result in reports of better quality of life and even lower levels of depression. There are so many options available to suit

specific lifestyles and personal needs. There are aids that are invisible as they sit further in the ear and some that connect to electronic devices such as a mobile phone or home television making for easier living. In many cases, these can be fitted all in one appointment with your audiologist. It is commonly a spouse or family member who is first to recognise a hearing impairment so, next time there’s miscommunication as to who was going to do the dishes, or “I didn’t hear you ask me to mow the law”, there’s probably some truth in it. Save the headaches by seeking help and advice for one of the most frustrating health issues we all must face from your qualified audiologist.

HOW DOES YOUR FUTURE LOOK? THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL, BUT ALSO, THE WINDOWS TO THE BODY

While most of us think that an eye examination is purely for the health of our eyes, an experienced optometrist can gain many insights into our overall health. High cholesterol and blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, brain tumors and various blood diseases are a few of the nonocular conditions which can be discovered during an eye check-up. When was the last time you saw your optometrist? When you consider that more than 80 percent of the information you process on a daily basis comes from your eyes, the importance of eye health shouldn’t be overlooked. These incredible organs can capture and interpret more than one-million pulse signals per millisecond and transmit them to the brain. But like any organ, your eyes are subject to deterioration and can lose their full potential if not properly taken care of. What can you do to protect the health of your eyes? Have a regular eye examination with an optometrist, such as Specsavers Cannonvale, at least every second year. Many eye diseases which can lead to blindness are preventable, if discovered early. Avoid smoking. Lead a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and eat a balanced diet. What you eat plays a big part in eye health. Ideally, try to consume three serves of fish per week as well as a handful of nuts plus fresh fruit and vegetables daily. If a balanced diet isn’t possible, consider vitamin supplements to boost your intake of vital vitamins and minerals. Drink water daily. Your eyes rely heavily on hydration. Many people don’t make the connection between fluid consumption and eye problems they may have.

It is important to protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation. Wear sunglasses with full UV protection and a wide-brimmed hat where possible to prevent exposure and potential damage. Wear eye protection during tasks where eye contamination is possible, especially when welding, grinding, on construction sights and even during tasks like gardening. Foreign particles can cause damage or infection. How to choose the perfect frames and lenses If you do discover that you need to wear glasses, there are many factors to consider ensuring your purchase becomes an investment into your health and personal image. With more than 1400 frames available, Specsavers Cannonvale have the range and expertise available to ensure the perfect fit. Your friendly Cannonvale optical assistant will take into consideration your face shape as well as your personal style and colour preference to ensure you are matched with the best-looking solution available. Additional to this, factors such as sport, your job requirements, lens prescription and comfort will ensure that your choice are fit for purpose and give you the best overall vision solution. Take a few minutes with us to discuss these factors to ensure your glasses will meet your lifestyle needs.

Specsavers Cannonvale are open seven-days per-week, located at in the Whitsunday Plaza, 8 Galbraith Park Drive, Cannonvale. Please call 07 4948 3407 to make an appointment.

When you look in the mirror, who do you see?

You should see your competition, because the only person you need to be better than today, is who you were yesterday.

The question is, how bad do you want it? Muscle Garden has grown into one of Mackay’s most popular fitness hubs from developing that fundamental principal, ‘be better tomorrow than you are today’. The Muscle Garden business itself is living proof. From humble beginnings training a handful of clients in a park, founder, Kay Nyenuh, is now expanding his Victoria Street gym to cater to his growing fitness family. “We exist to help improve the quality of human life. The great services we provide are just some of the means to our cause,” Kay said. “We are constantly looking at ways to provide a better service to our members, to ensure their experience with us is better than anything they have experienced in the past. Our expansion into the old VideoEzy building on Victoria Street, is part of a series of improvements we are delivering to our members. “More space, more equipment, more classes, and a functional fitness area to cater to the variety of ways people like to work out. Most importantly, we will continue to deliver the same level of personalised service, where we know every member by their name and continue to make the members of our fitness family feel welcome. “Our space is welcoming, where our members feel supported in their journey to achieve their health and fitness goals without intimidation,” he said. The move into the old VideoEzy building will happen this month in September, bringing another benefit to members, 24/7 access. “24/7 access is a feature our members have been asking for, and we are happy to deliver. This new feature will be available from the moment we move into the larger premises,” Kay said. The move also comes with additional parking, showers for members to use after their workout and a children’s play area to allow busy parents the facilities needed for them to achieve their health aspirations. Muscle Garden will also be offering functional running classes, to improve the technique and performance for runners of all abilities.

“A goal for many members is to compete in events, from a 5k fun run to marathons. Our aim is to translate their physical improvements into actual performance for the real world, to help our members achieve their dreams and better their times while preventing common running injuries,” Kay said. He asks, “Are you the kind of person who likes to feel welcomed and be greeted by your name when you walk through the door of your gym?” “Are you the kind of person who would love to be supported with your health and fitness goals and feel like you're not alone or out of place?” “And are you the kind of person who would appreciate a reminder phone call for those moments when you're lacking motivation and not using your gym membership?” “If you answered yes to any of the above then we are the right fitness centre for you." Call Muscle Garden today or visit musclegarden.com.au to join the Muscle Garden family. “We hope you make the right decision today so you can tell a better story tomorrow.”

Life!

When Steve Ischenko was diagnosed with throat cancer five years ago, the fact that he had been going to the gym regularly and had good muscle tone, meant his body was well-equipped to handle the treatment. “I was totally floored when I was diagnosed with throat cancer in late 2012.” Said Steve, “I recall my oncologist telling me during my care plan appointment that I should get through the treatment well due to having reasonable muscle tone. These words resonate in my mind to this day and I was so pleased that I had started including gym training in my life only 7 years earlier as I was always quite thin before then.” Steve lost 20kg during his treatment and only weighed 61kg when he returned from Brisbane in remission. As soon as he was able, Steve continued resistance training at Airlie Fitness, knowing that maintaining his fitness level would help in the unlikely event his cancer returned. “Although it took some time to get back to pretreatment shape,” says Steve, “I remain focused and continue to set higher goals.” Steve began training with his wife, Sharon, when they lived in Sarina because a gym membership was included as part of his salary package. Then, eleven years ago, the couple joined a local gym when they moved to the Whitsunday area with their two daughters. “We both enjoy training together and we try to keep each other focused.” Says Steve, “We have met some fantastic people through the gym and really like being around those who also care about their health and wellbeing.”

Now aged 55 Steve has just taken early retirement and is now a full-time house-husband. “Having cancer changed my outlook on life.” Says Steve, “Small things which had previously annoyed me suddenly weren't so important and spending quality time with family and friends are now firmly my priority.” Core Life Magazine sat down with Steve to find out more about his gym habits: How has going to the gym changed your life? I have made resistance training at the gym part of my weekly routine and enjoy feeling like I am holding back the years.

What is your favourite piece of exercise equipment and why? I think that the cable machine is my favourite piece of equipment due to its versatility. How often do you go and how long do you work-out for? I try to get to the gym 6 days a week. A typical workout can take an hour and a half, sometimes longer if I "socialise". What is your favourite 'cheat food'? I unfortunately cheat a lot, and am very partial to chocolate. Having a balanced diet is important to me though, and everything in moderation. What is your favourite part of your body and why? I really don't have a favourite body part, but enjoy training my back because I know that it is important in order to maintain a good posture.

TIPS: • Focus on a specific muscle group each session. • Try to maintain good form with each exercise, and only move up to the next weight once you are comfortable that your form allows it. • I also believe it is important for me to mix up training with things like drop sets, light super slow sets, etc, which helps to keep the workout interesting. www.airliefitness.com.au 52 www.corelife.com.au

My Body Transformation Journey

“All together I have lost 17 kg and I lost that impossible last 5kg using the Keto OS drinks. I wish I had discovered them at the start of my journey!”

So, how do you tell your body to start burning stored body fat? Let’s cut right to the chase as this is the golden question everyone wants answers to. Most of us struggle with weight and have tried everything to lose it; from calorie restriction to diet pills. But often with limited success. Caroline Adele’s struggle with weight began after an accident at age 18. She spent much of her life fluctuating between sizes 12 and 16 and was determined to shred her stubborn fat to improve her health. “I was always trying to diet by drastically reducing my calories then I would get hungry again, over eat and put back on all the weight,” she said. After seeing a friend’s health transformation at age 34, Caroline was inspired to follow suit and looked for better ways to trim and tone.

After initially losing 12kg, Caroline plateaued at that weight for a year, despite constant diet and exercise. “I was relatively happy at that weight but I wanted to see more results. The Pruvit Keto OS overpowered my body’s resistance to burn fat,” she said. Now having reached her goal physique, Caroline still enjoys her Pruvit Keto OS drinks for the added health benefits she feels, which she says include better brain function, sleep and clearer skin. She feels so passionately about the results she has now become a distributor. “So many people asked me what I was doing to achieve my results. I love sharing the information and product with people and seeing their success with health and weight loss.” Caroline is giving Core Life Magazine readers the chance to WIN one month’s supply of Pruvit Keto OS shakes as well as three runner-up prizes of five-day flavour trial packs, details can be found at www.corelife.com.au

“I had almost given up until this point as my body was no longer responding to conventional low calorie diets. I began combining weight training at the gym together with a low carbohydrate diet and began to see wonderful results but I still couldn't get the physique I wanted. “I was starting to lose heart. Then I was introduced to the Keto Diet and Keto OS supplements and everything changed. The results blew me away.” Caroline was introduced to a new drink, Pruvit Keto OS Max, which puts her body into the fat-burning state of ketosis within an hour of drinking it. She stated, “I was very skeptical at first but I thought I'd give it a go as what I was doing simply wasn't working. I combined the shakes with a keto diet and within 20 days I could see my abdominal muscles, which I had never seen before, and had lost 5kg of body fat with a 0.5kg gain of muscle.

HOW TO THINK RIGHT & FEEL RIGHT – NATURALLY! When you suffer from stress, depression and/or anxiety, it feels like nothing can ever help, and nothing will ever change… that’s what it does to your thinking. It makes you feel certain that you can never feel happy again. But when you know how the process actually works, then you start to gain power over it and hope starts to sprout again. There are three important things that will help you overcome the problem naturally 1. Understand that when these states take control they change your thoughts and feelings so that you might believe there is nothing you can do. That’s why you will make better progress when you get help from someone who can guide you through understanding how this happens and how you can take control back. 2. Put your focus first on learning to create natural states of calm that put you back in control and where you have reduced the amount of worrying and introspection you are doing. 3. Next you can take meaningful action to resolve any practical problems that are causing you stress or worry. As you feel better, you can gradually introduce elements to your life that will protect you from becoming caught up in that process again.

We’re also proud to support Mackay Tourism Limited in their work to bring more visitors to our region. We’ve worked closely with MTL on some very successful projects in the past year such as the Queensland Weekender episode dedicated entirely to our region, the second phase of the 101 Things to Do in the Mackay Region campaign and #My MACKAY which encouraged Mackay locals to share their favourite Mackay region experiences. Now we’re looking forward to a raft of new promotional projects and campaigns. We’ve had a great reaction to our Mackay Airport Sports Stars Hall of Fame. The first phase is now installed in the Observation Area, where you can enjoy a cold drink and a snack before your flight, or while you’re waiting for you passengers to arrive. The same six sports stars are also on display in the external Arrivals Corridor just before you reach the terminal as you come off your aircraft. Watch for them next time you fly in to Mackay.

MBW Master meat winners

O

ur local master butchers have done it again, this time sweeping two awards in the Queensland State Sausage King Competition held at the Brisbane Royal Show. The local meat magnates took the gold crown with their chicken and margarita sausage, taking out the chicken category. Their lamb, herb, cheese and garlic sausage took bronze in lamb. Their chicken sausage will now be on show at the nationals in Melbourne next year in February. If the thought of those flavours has tickled your taste buds, be sure to check out both stores, Master Butchers Whitsunday on Stewart Drive and MBW on the Barbie in the Whitsunday Shopping Centre as they can stock different products at different times. The Stewart Drive shop features the famous Himalayan dry aging room and is set to undergo even more renovations to keep up with demand for a range of specialty meats. It will produce a greater variety of small goods to go beside its famously flavourful kabana.

In the regional sausage competition in Townsville, it reigned supreme in numerous categories including its special Himalayan dry aged beef, its Spanish chorizo as well as the chicken and lamb categories as mentioned above. MBW on the Barbie won the regional beef burger category with its Moroccan variety and also took out the open burger category with its lamb kofta and haloumi burger. In the national bacon competition, Master Butchers backed up its bacon award for full rasher with a third placing in Queensland. If you haven’t tried the difference, visit your local expert butcher, Master Butchers Whitsunday and MBW on the Barbie. Its premium grass fed meats and award-winning sausages pack a flavour punch you can taste. Meaty BBQ packs to leave your mates impressed, fresh seafood to complete the feast and specialty small goods for that fancy touch, you can’t go wrong when your butcher is the master of meat. www.corelife.com.au 59

NORTHERN BOYS TAKE BRONZE AT

VIC JENSEN CUP

W

hen it comes to lacing up the footy boots and running onto the field to represent your region, the occasion doesn’t get any bigger for our 11-year-old superstars than at the annual Vic Jensen Cup. This festival of footy combines sporting regions from across Queensland to battle it out for supremacy, a lead-up to the fierce competition which faces them next year as they get their first opportunity to represent Queensland in the 12-year-old squad. The Vic Jensen Carnival is a school carnival organised by Queensland School Sport. There are 12 sporting regions across Queensland and nine of them competed in this year’s rugby league carnival, held in Bundaberg. Our local region is Northern, and the 2017 team was made up from members from five of the six districts; four from Burdekin, two from Charters Towers, five from Thuringowa, three from Townsville and one from Whitsunday. The team members met for three training weekends in Townsville before the commencement of the Vic Jensen Cup. Despite being the only player selected for Northern from his local region, Kaylem Douthwaite from Whitsunday, soon formed new friendships with his Northern teammates, who were impressed with his hard-hitting tackling. Northern’s team manager, Brook Wilson, commented that it was Kaylem’s tackling ability which first drew selection attention Kaylem’s way at the trials. 60 www.corelife.com.au

“What stood out about Kaylem was his tackling ability, his determination and his work rate. At the selection trial the boys were put in four random teams. These teams worked through a series of drills and then played a series of short trial games. Everything that Kaylem did had a certain quality about it and he was one of the first forwards picked in the team,” Brook said. In addition to the training weekends the Northern team travelled to Mackay to play Capricornia Region in two trial games. They defeated Capricornia in the first trail game on Saturday afternoon but were unable to back up the following morning and had a narrow loss. “This was a great experience for the team and gave them a great insight into the standard of football that they would be facing at the Vic Jensen Cup,” Brook said. Brook was joined by Ignatius Veukiso as coach and Chris Smith as trainer to make up Northern’s support crew. When it came time to represent Northern at the Vic Jensen Cup, their coach, Ignatius, was impressed at the heart and determination the team showed to improve after each game. “The team played some extremely tough rugby league against strong opposition but they stepped up to the plate and weren’t there to make up numbers, they proved themselves to be one of the top four teams.

“The boys played their hearts out and every game was down to the wire. They all turned up for each other and were very positive and played as a team. “Coming away with a bronze medal was the hard work of these boys and they were all heart. I am very proud of each of these individuals as they represented their region with pride, passion and respect,” Ignatius said. It was a big leap for Kaylem, facing an opposition stronger than he had experienced in the Mackay competition playing for the Brahman’s, but Ignatius said that his game rose to meet the challenge. “Kaylem had an absolute blinder of a carnival. His work rate in the games was very high which was excellent to see. One of his strengths is listening and applying what was said on the field. He tackled everything that was running at him, he has great footwork which is an asset to a forward and he turned up to play every game. His mental and physical toughness was an asset, well done Kaylem, Ignatius said. The main highlight for the Northern team was improving on every game to better their position throughout the tournament, ultimately coming away with a bronze medal.

LADIES, DUST OFF THOSE FASCINATORS AND MEN, IT'S TIME TO DON YOUR SUITS TO GET FROCKED UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE AT KAREN PENHALLURICK’S ANNUAL MELBOURNE CUP FUNDRAISER FOR CHARITY. WHAT STARTED 12 YEARS AGO, WITH A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE IN THE BACKYARD HAS GROWN TO ONE OF THE WHITSUNDAY’S MOST POPULAR CHARITY EVENTS AND THEY HAVE SUPPORTED A NUMBER OF WORTHY CAUSES FROM CANCER TO CYSTIC FIBROSIS. It began with a cause close to their heart, supporting the Cancer Society. Close family members had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and breast cancer. Wanting to fundraise to support the foundation which had given their family a great deal of support, the Penhalluricks decided to host a party at their place. Since 2006, the charity event has donated thousands of dollars to a number of organisations, raising in excess of $32,000 so far. The Proserpine Hospital, RACQ CQ Rescue, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Leukemia Foundation and Heart Foundation have been among the many recipients, with inspiration

coming from local people who are facing a difficult time. “In 2011, we raised funds in honour of local former Cowboys NRL player, Sam Faust. He sadly passed away from leukemia so the funds we raised were split to support his family with Christmas presents for his young children and the remainder was donated to the Leukemia Foundation. “Another year we raised money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation inspired by the story of local girl, Karli Elder, who lives with the disease. Last year we raised money for brain cancer research after Leah Large lost her battle with the disease,” Karen said. The event is organised by Karen and her family with the fundraiser held at their property in Conway, opposite the beach. Karen starts her day early with baking and setting up the tables and chairs, and is supported by friends and family who also bake to support the luncheon. Lunch is $15.00, and the fun day will include a cent sale and a raffle, where one of the special prizes on offer is a table handcrafted by Karen’s husband, Bruce. There are prizes for best dressed and best fascinator and a cake stall will be operating to take home some of the yummy homemade baking. BYO drinks, have fun and bring along a couple of items for the cent sale to boost the funds raised for charity. “Thank you to each individual who has supported our luncheon, we couldn’t have done it without your support. We also gratefully thank the business houses in Proserpine, Cannonvale and Airlie Beach for their generous donations over the years. If you can’t make it to the luncheon and would still like to donate to this worthy cause, please call me on the number below,” Karen said. Location: 25 Penhallurick Esplanade, Conway Beach. Date: Tuesday November 7. For more information, phone Karen on 0427 473 127. www.corelife.com.au 63

DRIVING

TO THE TOP

It takes dedication to compete in any sport, but to be a champion, it takes a family, a community and all of your spare time to reach the top.

Wayne Morton from Kuttabul, aged 21, was the youngest person ever to compete in an international Motorsport Rally at the age of 16. Since then he has travelled Australia to participate in many major events, competed against drivers far more his senior and used a grit determination to drive his way up the leader-board. In 2010 Wayne started competing in Khanacross which is a budget entry level category of motorsport. This has helped him develop into rallying. “After my first event,” he says, “I became so hooked that I competed in the North Queensland Khanacross Championships and won the junior category.” This gave him a thirst for the sport and a year later Wayne decided to start competing in Motorsport Rallies. He was so determined to test his skills against the new league that he received his civil driver’s license just two days before his first race. Fortunately this last minute rush led him to winning the juniors comp! Over the next four years Wayne competed in every event he could, modifying his car whenever he had the money and etching out a name for himself. Every event taught him something valuable. He learnt how to develop his skills and fine-tune his engine for the next race, gradually improved his record and winning more and more competitions. In 2015 Wayne entered the biggest event of the year, the IROQ (International Rally of Queensland) at Imbil. “In this event,” he says “I completed 4 stages to be leading the next competitor in my class by 25 seconds and it positioned me 4th outright in a field of 30 cars.” Unfortunately, at the beginning of stage 5 Wayne had a mechanical failure in a gearbox component abruptly ending his race and dashing his chances to win. This setback didn’t stop him, however, and Wayne returned a year later with a completely rebuilt car winning the National title event. That same year, Wayne 66 www.corelife.com.au

WAYNE MORTON

also won Abell Point Marina Australian Khanacross Championships, AKC by securing 1st place outright in a 2wd car amongst fierce competition from 40 other cars. “It was a huge thrill,” says Wayne, “to win a national title in a car that I rebuilt. “ Wayne’s triumphs did not stop there and in 2016 he received the CAMS Queensland Rising star award, then in February 2017 he was awarded the Confederation of Australian Motorsport. For Wayne, however, there is more to sport than winning. His love of motorsport means spending quality time with his father and grandfather plus the community of other racers who share a camaraderie as well as competitive drive. “For me” says Wayne, “racing is a lot more than results. It’s the racing community all coming together to help you succeed. Just recently I was competing in a rally and needed parts from a fellow competitor who I was beating in order to complete the rally. Without any hesitation he went to his service vehicle and gave me the parts I needed. I don’t think that’s something you will find in many sports.” Wayne would also like to thank the local business community whose kind sponsorship enables him to compete. BrosR Motorsport and Customs, United Fasteners, TFD Mackay, Brown and Bird Financial Planning, Frogs Touchups, TDV Autosport, MCS Automotive, North Queensland Independent Fuel Supplies (NQIFS), Brake N Auto Parts, Bencraft Cabinet Makers and Joinery, Traditional Signs, Mrf Tyres And Mentor Tyres, Wm Thermal Engineering, Nauticare, Consolidated Plastics and Epoxy, COR Cooling. “Most importantly,” says Wayne, “Tony Devantier from TDV Autosport who has played a large role in getting the new car ready for events, spending countless hours in the shed, sometimes until 2am in order to make sure everything was 100%.”

IF YOU COULD MAKE ONE RULE THAT EVERYONE HAD TO FOLLOW, WHAT RULE WOULD YOU MAKE AND WHY?

day very w e t r Sta ling ho re a e by fe tive we r , ou recia app ur lives dies. for o , our bo ds frien

If I had one rule that everyone had to follow it would be “Treat everyone the way you want to be treated” If everyone did this the world would be a better place I believe. Its so important that everyone is treated fair and equal and I think this simple rule if adopted would make our place a better place to live and would help those in need and suffering from depression and just generally struggling with life itself. Everyone wants a better place to be in so let make it one by treating each other respectfully. I have tried to instill this attribute in all of our children to make them better adults for the future generation. Political correctness has gone mad and I believe this one simple rule would fix it all.

CAROLYN FRITZ MORANBAH DISCOUNT TYRES & MECHANICAL

My to b rule w e to ould le h ma galise ave rria ge gay

My rule would have to be to legalise gay marriage I’d want people to have more joyful lives and to focus on the positive aspects of their experiences rather than the negatives.

The marriage of two consenting adults who love each other regardless of gender shouldn’t even be a question!

So i guess my rule would be, start everyday by feeling how appreciative we are for our lives, our friends, our bodies. Start to break down each of those categories and focus on each element. For example start to appreciate what you like about your body and not to think about the negatives.

I believe it is definately not worth wasting millions and millions of dollars on debating it through a plebiscite when the money could be put towards real problems like child welfare, homelessness, mental health, disability pensions, conservation, clean energy, domestic violence, poverty, veterans & the list goes on.

If you start thinking about the positives everyday it wont take long to get to a place of feeling amazing. And just as important, setting a tone for the entire day that will keep your spirits up.

THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE FOR LOCALS T

he Whitsundays provides an endless playground for discovery, both on land and sea. For lovers of adventure, there’s nothing quite like the freedom of creating your own itinerary so you can do more of what you love. Whether that’s fishing, snorkelling, diving, lazing about on the white sand of Whitehaven long after the tour groups have departed or exploring an uninhabited island, the world can be your oyster! Combine this sense of uninhibited adventure with the relaxation of sipping poolside cocktails at a luxurious self-catering resort and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable holiday, where you call the shots. Sound too good to be true?

Having a boat completely to themselves meant they were able to explore the Whitsundays on their own terms, and after checking in to their accommodation, they set off on their first adventure. “We spent the first day visiting Whitehaven Beach and then went to Chalkies (Stockyard) Beach on Haslewood Island for a picnic. We all swam, snorkeled and played cricket on the beach, it was a perfect start to the vacation,” Rebecca said. Upon arriving back at Palm Bay Resort, the two families settled in for their first night in paradise with beachfront cabins.

Keep reading to discover how you can craft your own dream Whitsunday adventure.

You can’t beat the experience, waking up to the sound of the waves, watching the sunset from your own deck overlooking the bay, sipping on cocktails and watching the kids fish from the beach.

A Whitsundays local, Core Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Rebecca Douthwaite, has been fortunate to experience much of what her backyard, the Whitsundays, has to offer. But when family came to visit earlier this year, she wanted to give them the ultimate tropical holiday, combining fishing, diving and island-hopping with the relaxation of a resort.

“The facilities are fantastic. You can swim in the pool by day, cook poolside barbecues, curl up with a book by the fire at night and look up at the stars. The resort team even clean up the dishes after dinner! There are a great range of cocktails and other drinks to purchase from the bar and the amazing staff are always ready to keep them flowing,” Rebecca said.

“I wanted the freedom which came with hiring a boat, but without having to overnight on the water. An option which was affordable yet luxurious, gave us the ability to plan our days and one which suited a family of all ages,” she said.

With the freedom to choose their own adventures combines with the comfort and luxury of an island resort stay, Rebecca commented that it was one of the best vacations she had ever experienced.

Having stayed at Palm Bay Resort on Long Island before, Rebecca knew this would be an ideal location to be based at. But along with the idyllic location and self-catering freedom the resort presented, she also wanted a way to easily explore other islands. “We decided to hire a boat through Boab Boats, who have options which are powerful enough to easily reach the islands, large enough to comfortably fit our group of seven yet compact enough to moor near the beach to reach shore easily. It was also affordable as we wanted a three day option where many bareboat hire options are a minimum of five days,” she said. The Boab Boat team met Rebecca’s family group at Abell Point Marina to assist with the launch from the boat ramp. It took only 45 minutes to reach Long Island where the Palm Bay Resort team met them upon arrival to assist with transporting luggage and food from the boat to the resort. 70 www.corelife.com.au

“The look on my aunty and uncle’s face as well as the excitement of my cousins as we arrived at Palm Bay was a truly unforgettable moment. Visiting many islands with our own private beaches, having an entire stretch of water to snorkel by ourselves and watching my cousin dive for the first time were all highlights. The freedom to come and go as we pleased, discover parts of the Whitsundays we hadn’t seen before, visit Whitehaven when it was quiet and choose our own daily destinations were advantages you just can’t get on a pre-determined tour.”

For more information on how you can tailor your own perfect tour, visit www.boabboats.com.au and www.palmbayresort.com.au for contact details and pricing. Open the door to a backyard you’ve never seen before, the ultimate adventure is closer to home than you realise.

YOU WANT SOMETHING TRULY SPECIAL FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT? You can’t go past the venue I chose for my wedding, the very private but now very accessible, Villa Botanica. Janet and Ralph Hogan created this amazing place as their home but since 2008 it’s been operating as an intimate, beautiful wedding venue. The great news for Airlie and Mackay locals is you can now book Villa for functions as well. Think Christmas party, anniversary dinner, corporate events, conference or seminar, whatever calls for something truly special. Unlike a restaurant it’s totally private – the whole 2.3 hectare estate is exclusively yours - and unlike a standard function centre, the setting is spellbinding…hosting an event here is the one sure way to truly delight and surprise your guests. “Why settle for memorable when you can make it totally unforgettable? Villa Botanica will always hold a special place in our hearts and it will for you as well. Come and discover it for yourself.” Rebecca Douthwaite, Villa Botanica’s first bride and Editor in Chief of Core Life Magazine.

• Absolute waterfront location • 5 star cuisine • Seating for up to 100

• 15 minutes from Airlie Beach

AIRLIE BEACH FESTIVAL

BABY ANIMALS - BIO LEAD SINGER SUZE DEMARCHI STARTED SINGING IN LOCAL PERTH PUB BANDS AT THE AGE OF 17. AS SUZE ADMITS – “AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE OF GIGS, I KNEW THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE I WOULD RATHER DO. IF I NEVER DID ANYTHING ELSE THE REST OF MY LIFE BUT RECORD AND PLAY LIVE, I’D BE HAPPY.” For the next four years, DeMarchi was in England recording and writing as a solo artist, with EMI records. But disheartened by the record company’s attempt to slide her into a pop career, and missing not working with a band, together with a little encouragement from then manager John Woodruff, she returned to Australia in mid 1989. On her return she set about forming a new band, fellow Perth musician Frank Celenza recommended his best friend, bass player Eddie Parise DeMarchi approached guitarist Dave Leslie to join the band and finally, Celenza joined as the band’s drummer. November 1989 saw the band’s first gig at the infamous Kardomah Café in Sydney, and the start of constant touring through the city’s pubs and clubs. The Angels were so impressed with the band, that they included one of the band’s demos Break My Heart on the B-side of their single Dogs Are Talking. In August 1990, the band singed a publishing deal with SBK Songs (now EMI Songs). Whilst attending one of their gigs, Terry Ellis, president of the newly formed Imago Recording Company heard something special and signed them to his label. He described the experience as “the band was great, the songs were terrific and to me Suze clearly had that indefinable magic that separates one artist from the crowd and makes them a star.” Debut Album The band flew to New York to record their debut album, and together with expatriate Mike Chapman (Sweet, Pat Benatar, Blondie ) and Kevin “Caveman” Shirley (Aerosmith, Silverchair) produced a classic album. Their debut single Early Warning is released April 1991 and immediately reached the Top 20 on the Australian Singles charts. After the release of the single, the band flew to the United States for a series of showcases for the Imago/BMG people, to coincide with the earlier release of the album there. With the Top 20 chart success of Early Warning at home, the second single Rush You was released in August 1991. Their eponymous debut album Baby Animals was released in September 1991. The album debuted at number six on the ARIA Charts and spent six weeks at number one, eventually going eight times platinum and becoming the highest-selling debut Australian rock album of all time (until the release of Jet’s album 12 years later). After reportedly listening to the band’s album in his kitchen, Bryan Adams asked the band to join him on his European tour. 76 www.corelife.com.au

OF MUSIC 2017 LINE UP

SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM IT WAS BACK IN 2004 WHEN MISS CONNIE AND BLACK ANGUS STARTED MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER. A SERIES OF SINGLES AT FIRST THEN, IN 2006, THEIR SELF-TITLED, 3 X PLATINUM DEBUT ALBUM. Spearheaded by a spectacular salvo of chart topping hits – UFO, Pictures and I Love It – Sneaky Sound System won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, the first of 14 nominations to-date. Second long-player and #1 album 2 arrived in 2008 with yet more dancefloor slayers in the form of Kansas City, When We Were Young and the #1 UK club smash It’s Not My Problem. In 2009 I Will Be Here, a collaboration with Dutch superstar DJ Tiesto, took Sneaky to the top of both the US dance airplay and UK club charts. In late 2011 album number three, From Here To Anywhere, arrived, the title referencing its creation in hotel suites, planes, and studios around the world from here (Sydney) to just about everywhere (London, Paris, Ibiza, Moscow). Accolades from critics around the world flowed: MTV called it “an incredible effort”, Rave magazine Brisbane deemed it “a minor pop masterpiece”, and Sydney’s Daily Telegraph said it’s “a delicious feast of world class dancepop songs”. A nomination in the prestigious 2012 International DJ Awards in the Live Performance category underscored their escalating international reputation. In the swirling midst of albums and tours, Connie lent her vocals and lyrics to albums from superstars Jay-Z, Kanye West and Snoop Dogg, and in 2013 she was a guest mentor on Australia’s biggest TV show, The Voice. Later that year, News Limited polled musicians and critics to determine Australia’s greatest all time singers, Connie came in at no. 18. In late 2015 and inspired by their Sneaky Sundays summer residency in Mykonos, Sneaky returned to their dance music roots putting out house stormers like Summertime Madness and All I Need on limited club release. And now, in 2016, comes their first major release in over four years. I Ain’t Over You is true Sneaky Sound System: soaring vocals, beguiling lyrics, exhilarating grooves and top notch production. It’s a song for our times. www.corelife.com.au 77

MUSHROOM VALLEY FESTIVAL 6th - 8th October Over the past six years, Mushroom Valley has evolved into something more than a music festival. It has become a community. Situated in a magical landscape between the Whitsundays and Mackay in Central Queensland, the subtropical setting is the perfect complement to the eclectic electronic music the festival has to offer. Without giving too many clues for what is to come, this years Mushroom Valley will include a deluxe choice of some old favourites and some special international guests playing styles ranging from Techno, Prog, Psytrance and the broken beat genres of glitch hop and drum and bass. Although the music is a central focus, it is only one piece of the puzzle that shapes the experience. This otherworldly landscape captivates with seamless décor that transforms the space into a surreal and blissful dream. As you walk past old trees the scents of many cultures entice the appetite, while across the river diverse workshops erupt with new ideas and young ones meet each other in the children’s space.
