Editor COACHING SESSIONS

VALUED AT $1000 FROM MINDS ALIGNED, MACKAY

I was a pretty ugly teenager. I had dark grey train-track braces running along my teeth, a think mousey brown fringe that often covered my eyes and I ate a lot of chocolate giving me pimples and a chubby look. Despite this, I was determined to be a good person and not let it drag me down. I know this because I read it in my diary years later, written by my 15-year-old self. “I may not be pretty but I will be a really nice person instead” This makes me smile, because I can see my light shining through my awkward teenage hang-ups. This light helps me to understand that being a nice person and treating people with respect is a way of being beautiful. In my twenties I kind of blossomed. I moved to Australia, got a tan, grew my hair long, dyed it blonde and started getting a fair amount of male attention. I’m not going to lie, after feeling like a wallflower in my teens, I enjoyed all the looks I received. Now in my mid-thirties I am starting to see the lines creep in around my eyes and above my lips. I still study them in shock and disbelief. How is this aging thing happening to me? It is not my time, oh . . . I guess it is! I’m a single mum now, which is guaranteed to give you wrinkles! The other day, I was speaking with a friend and she brought up the idea of a youthful glow. Apparently, youthful glow is ageless, a beauty that emanates from within. Immediately I thought of my mum. She doesn’t like wearing make-up and she is 70 years old now but always carries a youthful glow with her. It comes from within and it is full of joy. A pure energy that is ageless and timeless, graceful and serene.

CHOOSE BETWEEN: A Four Hour Team Development and Alignment Session When all of your team members are on the same page, it creates an alignment to the vision, purpose and values of your business and gives them clear focus on where they are heading. This alignment and focus drives business strategy and direction and results in the improved overall performance of both the individual and the business.

A SERIES OF FIVE 1:1 COACHING SESSIONS We coach in the belief that ‘the answer lies within’ and it is our role to ask the right questions in a trust-based, non-judgmental space, enabling our client time to reflect and find realisation, truth and ownership in their answer. Valid until 30/6/2019

YOU GOTTA BE IN IT TO WIN IT!

So I ask you to take a look around and notice this youthful glow in others, most importantly, notice it in yourself. As we celebrate a seven year milestone with Core Life Magazine, we notice as things age they often grow and evolve, transform into something, if not better, then equally beautiful.

Core Life

Reaches a Savvy

Seven

Years In Business Who said print media was dead? The team at Core Life Magazine obviously missed the memo. We’re very much alive and kicking, evident by the fact that this edition is one of the largest we’ve ever produced. We’ve rolled with the punches and thrown a couple of our own, evolved to meet market demand, and we haven’t just survived through a mining downturn, we’ve thrived! The Core Publishing Group now produces and distributes three magazines, from as far north as Cape Tribulation down to Byron Bay in New South Wales. Our hub, and heart, is still here in Mackay and the Whitsundays, where it all began in 2011. Publisher, Rebecca Douthwaite, was one of the original founders of City Life Magazine, a lifestyle magazine in Cairns, Townsville and the Whitsundays. She and her business partners sold the company to Australia’s second biggest media corporation at the end of 2006. After a short break, it didn’t take long for her passion for publishing to return, so she started Core in 2011 with her friend and business-partner, Jody Euler. The publication started its life as a Men’s magazine, heavily targeted toward the mining industry. During its first year, the business partners went their separate ways. Jody needed to focus on her growing media agency redhotblue, so Rebecca took on the business and transformed Core into Core Life where it transitioned into a community and lifestyle magazine. www.corelife.com.au 14 14 www.corelife.com.au

Reaching seven years is a significant milestone for Rebecca, who remembers the naysayers who told her that this magazine would never last the distance. “It comes down to two things, people and passion. The people who have worked for Core Magazine over the years who have poured their heart and soul into every edition and the passion they have had for what they do. It’s also people, as in our clients, who have believed in and supported us from the start and the passion they have for their own businesses. Lastly, it’s again people within the communities we represent, who trust us to tell the stories about what they are passionate about.

Without people and passion, we would have nothing,” Rebecca said. When the Core Publishing Group expanded to produce three magazines; Core Life, Tripping and Byron Life; Rebecca’s role transitioned from Editor to Publisher and Editor-in-chief. This allowed Rachael Smith to step up to the role of Editor for Core Life and Tripping Magazines, and Amanda Wright to become Editor for Byron Life Magazine. Rachael expresses the pride she has for the publication which allowed her to expand her editorial prowess in the industry. “I am so proud to be part of the Core Life Magazine team. We all love what we do

We all deeply care about the community we represent and it is always amazing to see how far and wide Core Life Magazine reaches and the lives it touches,” Rachael said. It is fitting, that as Core Life Magazine celebrates its seventh birthday, the magazine is debuting its first recorded video interview from the set of the Core Couch. Cover models, Rowena Hardy and Nick Bennet from

Mackay business, Minds Aligned, are the first clients to experience Core Life Magazine’s video interview with Senior Journalist, Amanda Wright. The inclusion of video content is aligned with Core Publishing’s vision to strengthen online content and social media exposure for its clients by taking a fresh approach and delivering something unique in the media market. our team WHAT IS YOUR MEMORABLE CORE MOMENT?

Rebecca Douthwaite Founder, Publisher, Editor-In-Chief Time with Core: Since Inception “It still amazes me how powerful words can be. They can break hearts, fill hearts, change lives and tell the most amazing stories about real everyday people making their way in this world. This is, to me, Core Life Magazine.” Bec xxx Business woman, boss, Mum to 12-year-old Kaylem and wife to her amazing husband, Paul Douthwaite. Known as Bec by her workmates, friends and clients. This amazing high-achiever is the reason we at Core Life Magazine are here. She directs and guides the team, oversees all operations, is the visionary at photoshoots and directs the pagination and layout of every edition. Not only does Bec run three magazines, she is not afraid to tie up her laces and hit the pavement, helping with distribution or with anything the team needs. The clients get such a kick out of seeing her, in her gym gear delivering their magazines.

“Seven years of my life, I have so many! Making someone feel good about who they are is the core reason I do what I do. The day I stop feeling excited about hearing from a client how happy we made them is the day I will stop. One example is when I received a phone call from a guy in Hervey Bay who read my Editor’s note about losing my beautiful dog, Sierra. He thanked me for putting the heartache he was feeling about losing his own dog into words. He said it helped him more than I would know. “I think I cried all day!”

DO YOU HAVE AN EMBARRASSING CORE MOMENT? “I was delivering magazines to a client and got my heel stuck in the stairs. I fell face-first into the glass sliding doors with the entire office watching! They were concerned but also pissing themselves! I could have died!”

Describe your personality in three words: Fun, inquisitive, caring. Deb arrived in Australia 30+ years ago from the UK, but it wasn’t the classic pommy backpacker scenario, she was armed with a marketing degree and was hell bent on getting a job in a big Sydney advertising agency (which she did, after writing 80 letters!). Since then, Deb has gone on to do many amazing things including meeting her husband Carl! “ I have had many great jobs and met so many incredible people, Australia has been good to me,” said Deb. For the past 10 years Deb has been running Write Away Whitsundays, which helps businesses of all kinds communicate more effectively with their target audiences.

Fav Quote: Treat others the same as you would like to be treated. With four grown-up children living ‘all over the place’ and two businesses to run, Debbie did not get the last six month ‘break from work’ that she had been planning on. Instead, she has been keeping an eye on Proserpine Rural, the business she has owned with her husband for the last 12 years, and overseeing a new business she recently purchased with her daughter. Debbie is running solo at the front counter of the local health food store, Healthy Haven, until her daughter, Bethany, has completed her degree in nutrition and dietetics later this year and can rejoin the team. In addition to this Debbie is studying a course in mentoring. Being busy must be part of her nature, as well as being loyal, friendly and patient.

Recently, she put her business on hold for an 18-month stint as PR & Communications Specialist for Tourism Whitsundays, which was fun, but she is now pleased to be ‘flying solo’ again!

When she is not behind the counter, Debbie enjoys gardening and helping her husband at home on the farm. Every Sunday morning she goes to church and then takes the afternoon to relax and watch a movie.

When she’s not working, Deb loves the outdoors, walking, swimming, snorkelling. Or she can be found enjoying a good book or a movie and of course socialising!

Originally from Colac in Victoria, Debbie moved here with her family 17 years ago. Although leaving her family and friends was one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do in her life, she is glad they made the move to this beautiful region.

This is the third time Deb has lived in the Whitsundays. The first time was in 1988 and she’s kept coming back, drawn by its stunning natural beauty and also the warmth and friendliness of the people. “Whenever I feel something’s not going that great, I look out the window and think, c’mon, you live in the Whitsundays for goodness sake!” www.corelife.com.au 18 18 www.corelife.com.au

Skating will be sweet

John Dickenson, Liam Lewers, Dave Adair and James Douglas from Skateparks Australia with Hamish Wright from Holcim Australia, Mackay.

at Mackay’s Sugar Bowl

Life is about to get sweeter for those who love to skate with construction on Mackay’s Sugar Bowl skate park nearing completion. The epic park of ramps and rails is located near the Norris Road PCYC and is the result of petitioning by the Mackay Skateboarding Association and Northern Beaches Project Sk8 Park group. The joint-funded initiative between the Mackay Regional Council and the Federal Government’s Better Community Building Fund was designed by award-winning skatepark designers, Convic. The design was in collaboration with the local community and council. The result is a multi-purpose space to cater to all ages, skill levels and differing sets of wheels; including BMX’s, scooters, rollerblades and skateboards. The community space also includes barbecue and picnic facilities, a multisport court, ping pong table, parkour equipment and a stage for events and concerts.

James said that the construction of the Sugar Bowl had gone pretty smoothly. “We are experienced in skatepark builds so there wasn’t anything technical we hadn’t struck before. Because we all skate, at differing levels, we know what works and what we need to keep an eye out for during construction,” he said. Concrete Skateparks used local contractors where possible and called upon the technical knowledge of local concrete suppliers, Holcim Australia, to supply specialised mix designs for the job. Account Manager, Hamish Wright,

explains some of the technical aspects involved with supplying concrete for varying gradients and strength specifications. “Tight quality control was the key to success for this job. You only get one shot at supply when pouring technical gradients like ramps and bowls. Providing coloured shotcrete comes with a lot of challenges; ensuring it sticks to vertical walls, making the concrete easy to finish, reducing the shrinkage properties of the concrete; these factors all provide unique aspects, no-one wants to be skating on cracks,” he said.

Concrete Skateparks was awarded the tender to construct this world-class facility, the region’s first district level state-of-the-art skate park. This company is iconic in skatepark builds across Australia. Concrete Skateparks Site Supervisor, James Douglas, commented that the D11 dozer blade donated by BTP Mackay was a unique feature of the park. “The 16-tonne dozer blade, that’s unique. There’s nothing else like that in any other skatepark in Australia that I can think of. It’s a skateable feature of the park which makes it pretty unique,” he said.

COMMUNITY LIFE

Local artists, Donna Maree Robinson and Lalune Croker, were tasked with visually bringing the Sugar Bowl to life with designs already conceptualized. “The project has taken around three weeks so far, but we’re thrilled with how it’s coming along. The greatest challenges for us in this environment is the dust, wind, noise and obstacles, but the guys on site have been really helpful and friendly,” Donna said. Donna specialises in projection art and has been involved with many recent community events, from Crossroad Art’s Unlikely Tour, to DBCT Illuminate at the Botanic Gardens and ‘Synesthesia,’ a digital projection in the foyer of the MECC for Ne’: Roi ballet’s international debut in Mackay. One of Concrete Skateparks crew members, John Dickenson, qualified for Etnies Rumble on the Reef, the ASF Queensland Championships of Street Skateboarding which will be hosted at the Sugar Bowl in September. The event is considered to be the best week in skateboarding in Australia and features international superstars including California’s Trevor McClung and Canadian Matt Berger. If you love more amp in your ramp, check out the family-friendly Mackay Sugar Bowl for a day of wheely great fun.

FREEMASONS

MAKING

GOOD

MEN BETTER

Discover the organisation that has inspired many of the world’s great visionaries. Freemasons Queensland is part of a centuriesold tradition of helping men become the best they can be. Through self-improvement, support, leadership development and philanthropy, Freemasons help influence lives for the better.

Freemasonry originated in the guilds and the crafts of the stonemasons in the 13th and 14th centuries. While there was a time where Masons weren’t allowed to disclose their identity, today’s Masons are proud to openly raise money for the community and be identified as part of this noble group. Mackay Freemasons, RW Bro. Graham Townsend PJGW and VW Bro. Dr. Bill Boyd AGDD, have both been recognised as local men who have given a lot to charity and community groups throughout the years. After four years as the Assistant Grand Director of Development for the Mackay Area Freemasons, Graham is handing the baton over to Dr. Boyd to lead the Freemasons for the next four years. Both men have been Freemasons for nearly 30 years and have formed a strong friendship over this time. They have enjoyed their time contributing to the community and encourage all good men to consider joining the Freemasons to make a difference.

Assistant Grand Director of Development for the Freemasons Mackay Area, RW Bro. Graham Townsend PJGW, hands the baton over to VW Bro. Dr. Bill Boyd AGDD for the next four years.

“We welcome all men of all ages, ethnicity, religion and culture in our organisation. It’s a place where you can meet each month and feel like you belong to a place which can make a real difference. Friendships are forged and you feel united. It’s the kind of place where you walk through the door and leave your troubles behind. Everyone is equal, it doesn’t matter if you’re a doctor or a truck driver, a lawyer or a bricklayer. All men are equal at the Freemasons,” the men said. Despite many misapprehensions, the Freemasons are not a religion, a cult or a conspiracy. It’s not particularly secretive either, anyone interested in the Freemasons are encouraged to visit a local lodge and find out what they do. In Mackay alone, the charitable work conducted by our local Freemasons is heartwarming. Regular contributions are made to the Pioneer Valley Chaplaincy which go toward providing breakfasts for students at local schools who often go without. Last month the Freemasons donated $6,000 toward this cause. Graham explained that, “At Walkerston School alone, 55 children regularly go to school without breakfast. The Freemasons believe that our children are the future, and to give them a better chance at life, it starts with providing breakfast to help them learn at school.”

Last year, after raising money toward wheelchairs for Mackay Hospital, the Freemasons then donated a remaining $4,000 to purchase 40 street swags to provide shelter for the homeless. $1 million has been raised over the past 18 months to go toward drought-affected farmers in West Queensland. Many other organisations and charities in the Mackay region have received considerable donations from the Freemasons, including $8,000 last month to the Mackay Hospital Foundation to go toward purchasing a dedicated Echocardiography Ultrasound machine for Mackay Base Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Ambulatory Care Service. The charity of Freemasons Queensland is known as Hand Heart Pocket, which aims to make more possible in more communities. For every dollar raised by Masonic lodges in Queensland, Hand Heart Pocket matches every dollar to double the contribution raised for charity. Becoming a Freemason is a commitment to develop your own potential, to values that see all humankind as equal, and to helping others in our community. Be part of a timeless tradition dedicated to maximising human potential. Visit uglq.org.au for more information, visit your nearest Masonic lodge or call Graham Townsend on 0409 635 111.

Whitsunday Coast Airport Terminal Upgrade Stage 1 of the Whitsunday Coast Airport terminal expansion project is well underway with contractors, Paynter Dixon Queensland expected to deliver the completed project by late December 2018. Contractors are currently erecting the framework for the extension on the eastern and southern sides and pouring concrete for footings and hold down bolts.

project will support or create up to 100 local jobs, giving this region a massive economic boost .

Following this stage, the roof will be erected by installation of cables, airconditioning and installation of the walls.

This council has adopted a measured and sustainable approach to developing the airport and these projects are critical to realising the long term vision of our Strategic plan.

The decision to upgrade the terminal is welcomed with record passenger numbers and six years of positive growth being experienced at the Whitsunday Coast Airport.

Whitsunday Regional Council would like to thank the Queensland State Government for funding the $15 million terminal expansion project. Without their valuable support, this project would not have been possible.

There are five stages of the rolling masterplan for development of the airport complex for the long term future. Each of the staged developments complements the previous so nothing is being built and then removed. The concept terminal expansion will include: • Additional carparks • Additional toilets in baggage claim area • Provision of additional airside toilets in the expanded departure lounge • Doubling the size of the departure lounge to comfortably accommodate people from two simultaneous flights • Interior designed new furniture, signage, carpet, tiles, wall paint and finishes • Reconfigured and expanded security screening area to allow for a future double lane of security screening • Relocation of secure departure lounge exit with pass back monitoring and alarm directly into baggage claim area to reduce congestion • Additional food and beverage seating areas • More than double the size baggage claim and arrivals area and adding a second baggage carousel • Expansion of the baggage make up to include a makeup loop with two loading positions and bypass lanes to allow for expedient loading of departing aircraft • Construction of relocated and expanded airport management offices, including an external emergency operations room Paynter Dixon Queensland has promised to utilise local contractors whenever possible. On top of improving the capacity for more visitors and enhancing their arrival and departure experience, council estimates the

Your chance to win 10,000 Indigenous Art Competition An exciting opportunity exists for Indigenous Australian artists to have their artwork displayed permanently on the Whitsunday Coast Airport’s new terminal building. The $15 million terminal expansion project is well underway and expected to be completed by December this year. Whitsunday Regional Council is asking for entrants to provide a design idea for a wall mural on the outside of the terminal building. The artwork will become a distinguishing feature at the entrance to the building, which welcomes thousands of international and domestic tourists who visit the Whitsunday Islands and the mainland every year. Council is looking for an artwork which would encompass and capture the Whitsunday region, with a reef, water, sand and aquatic animal theme. This will be a rare opportunity for an Indigenous Australian artist to receive international exposure. The winning artist will also be invited to the terminal expansion opening event in December, to reveal and showcase their completed artwork. All entrants will be assessed by a committee of Council staff and in consultation with local Traditional Owners. The successful artist would receive $10,000 prize money, and the winner will be announced in mid-September. The successful artist will be asked to complete their artwork by December 2018, in time for the opening of the new terminal. To find out more and read the competition guidelines, visit Council’s website at www.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au or contact our Customer Service by phone on 1300 972 753.

A Story of Destiny Rescue Christine Mclntyre helping to free children from sex slavery

W

hen we think of a twelve-year-old girl, we see a child, with an innocent view of the world.

What about a child who has just been freed from sex slavery? What do you see? A child’s body with the scarred eyes of someone much older, someone who has seen and experienced things no one of her age should ever have to witness.

and healthcare, spiritual guidance and, most importantly, love.

with a caseworker to create a reintegration and care plan.

This is where Christine first meets the children. It is her job to help guide these scarred and damaged souls into a future where they can regain the confidence and self-worth they had stripped away by the abuse.

At the end of the six months they hold a graduation ceremony to celebrate how far the children have come from the first moment they made the decision to come to the Rescue Home.

This is something Christine McIntyre says is the hardest to deal with in her job working for a charity that liberates children enslaved in the sex industry.

Christine’s Rescue Home is in a small city in North Thailand called Chiang Rai which in a strange way reminds her of Airlie Beach where she lived for four years teaching at the local Christian College.

“These girls are so hard on the outside that you can easily forget you are working with young children who should be just starting High school. They have not had the chance,” said Christine.

Her role is the Learning Centre Manager, filling in the educational gaps the girls have missed. She teaches English, life skills such as good relationships, hygiene, budgeting, goal setting and has also discovered a new gap – critical thinking.

The charity Christine works for is called Destiny Rescue, a Christian non-profit group that help free enslaved children in Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and India.

“Quite often the girls haven’t been taught to analyse and think about all the possibilities, both negative and positive, involved in making a decision. If the girls lack these skills then making the right choice can be very hard,” said Christine.

The charity’s crucial first step is rescue. They send workers posing as customers into brothels suspected of using children and once these men gain the trust of an enslaved child they offer to take them to a safe rescue home. Once the child agrees they are taken to a Rescue Home where they can sleep safely, receive education, vocational training, counselling

“Another thing that I do is to bring clean pure fun into their lives!” The girls stay at the Rescue Home for six months. During that time they have access to full-time one on one aftercare staff who ensure physical, mental and spiritual needs are met. They will also work

“This day is where we celebrate them, we share memories that we have about their growth and we let them know that they have been made for a good purpose. To see their smiles and that they know that they are loved for who they are is pretty special,” said Christine. Often, the girls families come to the ceremony to see how much their daughter or granddaughters or nieces have grown. “This part is so inspiring and it makes me keep doing what I am doing,” said Christine. While in Thailand Christine is a volunteer and relies entirely on the support of friends, family, strangers and groups. If you wish to donate directly please email Christine at Christine.Mcintyre@ desintyrescue.org. If you want to see first-hand want happens on the ground in Thailand or Cambodia, Destiny Rescue run team trips every 3 months, which offer short, life-changing and educational insights. Bowen Pet Rescue GIVING PETS A HOME Bowen Collinsville Pet Rescue began as the dream of one animal lover who wanted to help local strays and abandoned pets back in 2014. Bronwen Wicks began researching how to make this dream a reality and in 2015, met Jude. Together they decided to form a group and in January 2016 they held their first meeting, gathering like-minded souls from around the local area. By August that year, the ladies had received their registered charity status and became incorporated. They were ready to save lives and give lost animals the chance to become loved pets once again. To date Bowen Collinsville Pet Rescue has saved over 200 cats and dogs that have been surrendered by owners or found as strays. The group do not have a shelter to house the lost animals before they are rehomed; instead they rely on the kindness of the volunteers to foster in their own homes. “The dream is to one day create a rescue shelter where we can house lost animals along with offering a heavily subsidised desexing and vaccination program for the wider community's Dogs and Cats.” Said Bron.

Bowen Collinsville Pet Rescue is almost completely self-funded with a Fundraising team holding raffles & snag sizzles. Donation tins can also be found throughout the Whitsunday Shire. It takes a small village of volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep Bowen Collinsville Pet Rescue running. From graphic designers to qualified dog trainers and behaviour specialists. Administration experts, dispatch managers, foster carers and a promotional team. They all pull together to ensure every animal is protected and given shelter. They also offer community support from education on responsible pet ownership to assisting low income pet owners by helping them care for their pets. Assisting in fence building and payment plan options. Bron, Jude and their team provide an incredible local service, which actively helps animals in need and brings people together as a result. They also rescue throughout Bowen, Collinsville, Proserpine and Airlie Beach. If you wish to give a dog or cat a home, would like to donate money or would even like to foster please contact them directly on 0459 757 455.

A Farmer’s Friend

Working with animals is a special gift. It is a way of helping those that are unable to help themselves. A way we can use our advanced human knowledge and technology to save a life, assist with breeding and create a more sustainable lifestyle for all our creatures, big and small. At Proserpine Vet Surgery, they are dedicated to protecting our local animals. Whether it be caring for our loveable pets, protecting neglected animals or assisting farmers with the health of their large farm animals. Proserpine Vet Surgery’s resident farm specialist, Jason Mansfield, is passionate about helping our local farmers in any way he can. Over the past year Jason has invested time into obtaining

his BULLCHECK accreditation. He has also gone to workshops to help improve skills in planning Artificial Insemination programs and reproductive scanning. In addition to this, Proserpine Vet Surgery has invested heavily in new equipment to help provide a better service to primary producers. This includes Bull testing equipment, an Ultrasound scanner for pregnancy diagnosis and sending Jason to courses such as the Australian Cattle Vets conference in Fremantle. For Jason, it is about working together to help develop new systems and understanding. “I really enjoy exchanging ideas with producers and finding out ways that our

profession can help them improve their business. Whether that be implementing pregnancy scanning after the breeding season, Bull testing prior to joining, Artificial Insemination protocols, Disease investigation and Bio security issues. “ Said Jason. This standard of knowledge is an excellent addition to the level of veterinary services offered in our region and one that will only increase the productivity and efficiency of our local farms. “It is a privilege to work with cattle producers in and around the Whitsunday and Mackay regions. I love helping our local farmers and most of them make a pretty special cuppa too!” said Jason.

AIRLIE BEACH BEAUMONT’S TAKE THE FLOOR Airlie Beach Beaumont’s have floored the competition after being named as the number one Beaumont Tiles store in Australia. The award was announced at Beaumont’s National Conference 2018 in Melbourne, where the Airlie Beach store proved they are tops when it comes to tiles.

or small. It doesn’t matter if our customer has a small renovation with a restricted budget or it’s for a multi million-dollar build. At the end of the day it’s the same dream of creating a beautiful space, and that’s the passion we put into every design consultation,” Michael said.

Airlie Beach Beaumont Tiles owner Michael Lee said that this recognition is a reflection of the passion his team have for helping home owners create the house of their dreams.

Husband and wife teams, Kristy and Michael Lee and Bridget and James Webb co-own both Airlie Beach and Mackay stores. Kristy and Bridget are sisters, and have managed their store teams to focus heavily on fashion and interior design giving their customers a greater depth of experience.

“Our desire is to help builders and home owners with achieving their vision, no matter how big

“We like to think of our team as having a feminine twist, more than three-quarters are ladies with an eye for fashion and detail. We believe in the world of tile trends and interior spaces it’s important to receive advice from people who are invested in how the room will look as well as how well it will function,” Bridget said.

Although the win was attributed to the Airlie Beach store, Michael commented that the accolades are shared between both the Airlie Beach and Mackay stores which operate with the same principals and passion. “Our staff between both stores are treated as one big team. We like to get together on weekends and celebrate like a family. Team members often travel in-between stores and the service you receive in Airlie is the same as you would receive in Mackay due to the collaborative nature of our systems. Both stores operate with an emphasis on listening to ensure our recommendations exceed the expectations of our customers,” he said. Michael also attributes the dedication of his team to the ongoing training and opportunity they receive through Beaumont’s, saying “We know our people add value when they view coming to work as ongoing opportunity to form an exciting career. It’s not just another job to them, it’s the chance to receive on-going training and support in a number of fields such as architecture and interior design. Our Mackay manager, Courtney, is studying in her third year of architecture, while our Airlie manager, Annie, is training in interior design.”

Although Beaumont Tiles is Australia’s largest tile retailer, the local stores are family-owned and operated. Sisters, Kristy and Bridget, grew up in Proserpine and are passionate about giving back to their local community. They support more than 15 local clubs and groups, recognising the wonderful support they receive back from locals.

With the power of more than 110 retail outlets nationwide, Beaumont Tiles have the market power to bring the best in tile designs back to Airlie Beach and Mackay at affordable prices. The stores have exciting plans for the next couple of years, with Michael saying customers will have to wait and see what will be coming their way.

“Part of receiving this award is acknowledging and thanking our wonderful locals who keep coming back. From our valued tradies and building clients to every-day men and women; our success is due to the strength of our relationship with our local community, who know they are receiving local service from people who care,” Kristy commented.

“The changes are in line with our vision to provide a full interior service with bathroom packages and a wider selection of the latest in new flooring initiatives. The idea is to sell a sanctuary, not just a room, but a place someone can relax in the privacy of their own home,” he said.

The tile selection process in Airlie Beach and Mackay is innovative and interactive. With the assistance from a virtual reality scan-andplay system, the customer can visualise their tile choices as if they were placed in their own project. Another interactive tool to support decision making is the 2-minute ‘What’s my style’ quiz which has helped to guide thousands of successful projects. No matter what the project, you're looking good with Beaumont's. With stores located conveniently in both Mackay and Airlie Beach, it’s easy to find the right product at the right price to transform your house into a home.

TILE TRENDS What’s hot right now? Slabs! When it comes to making a statement, bigger is better. With breathtaking beauty and remarkable practicality, slab tiles have opened up doors to new design innovations. These sizeable and aesthetically beautiful tiles offer maximum visual

impact and a slender profile, creating beautiful ceramic skins for exteriors and interiors. Installation tip: Slab tiles are not like normal ceramic or porcelain tiles due to their size, requiring very specific handling and installation techniques. Always consult with an expert for installation. The slim lines and mechanical

strength make them perfect for decorative feature walls. Slab tiles are seamless for cladding kitchen counter tops, islands or bathrooms. They also save time in renovation projects with the ability to tile over existing floors. Interior tip: Large tiles make a room feel bigger. Using slab tiles on the walls will make the space seem more cohesive and will create a point of definition with a greater wow-factor than a standard feature wall.

Timber trend Enjoy the aesthetic of timber without the hassle and maintenance of actual wood. Natural wood effect tiles are all the rage and offer a fantastic alternative to the real deal. Timber floor tiles are waterproof and easy to keep clean, plus there is no fear of the cat, dog or even the kids scratching the floorboards.

Porcelain One of the most popular choices for flooring, and increasingly also for wall coverings, is porcelain tiles. Extremely strong and virtually non-porous, they are nearly impervious to liquid, making them a popular option in wet areas. 20mm porcelain tiles can be used as pavers or bullnosed to be used around the edge of a pool as an alternative to stone.

AS TOUGH AS TILES It’s the surface you and your family will use the most every day, so choosing the right flooring for your home can seem like a daunting experience. However, if both good looks and durability are at the top of your wish-list, it doesn’t come much tougher than tiles. Tiles are a popular flooring choice throughout Australian homes, and with a host of benefits, it’s easy to see why. They take on any challenge with style, they are valued for versatility and longevity, come in a huge range of style options, are resilient around children and in natural disasters, easy to keep clean and keep your home cooler during the summer months. With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why tiles have stood the test of time. In fact, tiles have proven their beauty and durability over thousands of years. The Romans famously used ceramics to create opulent decorative effects throughout their most revered buildings, which still stand strong today. Fastforward to today and those same natural elements of strength and durability are a favourite of home-owners, adding longlasting class to any room in the house. Why is tile flooring the smart choice for home owners in the Whitsundays?

In tropical North Queensland, we are subject to regular extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, high humidity and cyclones. As we’ve experienced recently with Cyclone Debbie, not all types of flooring cope well with water damage. Many forms of flooring, once wet, prove very difficult to clean, most need replacing, while others can create a health hazard in your home by harbouring mould beneath the surface. Tiles are fast-becoming the flooring material of choice for every room in the house here in the Whitsundays, not just bathrooms and kitchens. They are water resistant, made from natural products they are environmentally safe and healthier for your home, they are extremely durable and hard-wearing, they won’t dent under your high heels and are great at keeping the house cooler in our hot summers.

DID YOU KNOW? Tiles are also allergy-friendly, scratchresistant, pet-friendly, odour-free and low maintenance. With new manufacturing methods like digital printing and large format cutting, there are tiles for every style, design and space – up or down, in or out.

CONGRATULATIONS BEAUMONT TILES on such an amazing achievement from all the team at ICON HOMES.

BUSINESS LIFE

Doing It My W a y with Caroline Adele F

ive years after walking away from her Mackay Photography Business, Caroline Adele has returned to her passion of photography with a new sense of purpose, fresh set of business skills and a new look business vision to match. WHAT PRESSURES MADE YOU RETIRE YOUR BUSINESS AFTER ONLY A FEW YEARS OF OPERATING? Whilst I still loved photographing, my lack of business experience from how to start a small independent from scratch, to how to stay on top of administration work quickly became too much. I am a creative soul and have a talent for figuring things out quickly, but I was overwhelmed trying to put it all together and mix my passion with trying to bring in an income that was sustainable. The old saying ‘successful’ photographer is a mediocre shooter but a savvy business man rings true, so I chose to walk away. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING UNTIL NOW? Over the past few years, I have dappled in many creative pursuits but I never felt like I was successful in finding the right thing for me. I was always looking for a career that I

could work my own hours, express my creativity in and something that kept me very social. I studied Education at university and always enjoyed teaching but knew in my heart it was not my future in the ‘system’. Then I began my current part time business last December, where all the ground work is done for me. The product is leading edge and created by credible science. It is in high demand due to its anti-ageing results and the customer retention is second to none. The best part is the company is all set up and automatic – including my website, product and postage. I have my own little slice of a big business without the investment risk or worry! All I do is creatively share the product and business potential with others, and I get paid each week! I even earned an Audi allowance within my first few months on top of my earnings but chose to take the cash option instead as I adore my 300 SRT!!! WHAT HAS MADE YOU DECIDE TO RESTART YOUR PASSION AND HAVE ANOTHER GO AT THE BUSINESS SIDE? I have had such huge success helping other people and especially businesses integrate this unique structure into their current bricks & mortar businesses and that it has allowed me the spare time to now return to my photography business without so much of the

financial pressure. I now can do both part time, yet my income potential far exceeds the restrictions of an hourly paid wage career. And now I am far more business savvy also, just from merely being a part of a well-run system. I feel the time is right to combine everything I love and do both part time, and I will still have the freedom to have daily coffees with my friends. WHAT WILL YOU BE SHOOTING? In keeping with my new-found love of business, I will be launching with a unique concept in the region which focuses specifically on Business Branding Photography. I adore working alongside business people to create something that lets their audience know who they are as a business professional, something personalised and creative. Gone are the days of the standard professional headshot, people want to see more than a standard portrait. Businesses need to sell themselves now, not just their product and I want to help the achieve this. I’m so excited for what is to come. You can see some of Caroline’s work here in Core Life as she is back shooting with us also or you can go to her new page www.facebook.com/ businessbrandingphotography www.corelife.com.au 37

BUSINESS LIFE

BEWARE OF CONTRACTUAL INDEMNITIES A MAJOR RISK TO BUSINESSES

For contracting businesses operating in the mining industry, Contracts and Purchase Orders are just day to day business. You may accept a Purchase Order without even reading the terms and conditions attached. What you may not realise, is that buried in the fine print is often a bomb, in the form of a nasty indemnity, and we are seeing many businesses fall victim to some very big claims, which insurance will not cover - even though the incident was actually the mining company’s fault! Giving an indemnity under a Contract or through Purchase Order Terms and Conditions significantly widens a party’s liability well beyond what a Court may award in damages. An indemnity is a promise that if an incident occurs which the indemnity covers, then the party giving the indemnity will put the other party in the position they would have been in had the incident not occurred – paying ALL their out of pocket costs (including legal costs) and potentially consequential loss. Even though a party is usually not liable for the negligence of another party at law, through agreeing to a ‘release of liability’ or giving an ‘indemnity’ under the Contract, you may unknowingly be altering this – and shifting all the risk to your business!

THE TYPICAL SCENARIO IS:

WHAT SHOULD COMPANIES DO?

•C ompany A provides a worker or services to site, under a contract with mine site B, which contains a clause by which company A indemnifies mine site B, for everything, including mine site B’s own negligence;

Contractors operating in the mining industry need to:

•C ompany A’s worker is injured on site and sues company A and mine site B for their negligence; •M ine site B issues a contribution notice against company A, saying company A should pay for everything, even mine site B’s own negligence; •C ompany A is told by WorkCover and by its insurer that it will not cover the risk… and so company A has to defend and potentially pay out the claim itself – without any insurance! We are also increasingly seeing a term requiring the Contractor to “name” or “note the interests of” the Principal in mining contracts and/or Terms and Conditions. If a business then fails to do so, then it is in breach of the Contract and at serious risk of the above scenario.

1) Carefully read the fine print; 2) S eek advice from a solicitor experienced in mining contracts about seeking to negotiate deletion of any onerous terms, or at least watering down ie. having the indemnity ONLY apply to acts or omissions of the Contractor (not the Principal) and excluding any consequential loss; and 3) S eek advice from your insurance broker to ensure you are appropriately covered by insurance for any indemnities you give, or risks you take on by a Contract. At McKays, we review mining contracts day-in, dayout and are very experienced and up to date on emerging issues like contractual indemnities.

Meet Friendly Team Crystal Lacey

Guest Experience Manager

From a young age Crystal knew she wanted a career on or in the ocean. She became a dive instructor as soon as she was legally allowed and has since travelled the world, developing her skills, before more recently becoming the Guest Experience Manager for Cruise Whitsunday.

Ningaloo Reef in West Australia and Great White Sharks in South Australia. She is also an avid conservationist, volunteering on Crown of Thorn control programs with Marine Parks and Eye on the Reef with GBRMPA.

Here, she is responsible for all customerfacing aspects such as overseeing on-vessel crew service delivery, including design, staff training and product development. She is the friendly, passionate face at the forefront of customer experience.

I love helping guests who have never swum in the ocean before, have a fear of water or a disability and didn’t think they would ever be able to experience the Great Barrier Reef.

Every day Crystal feels honoured to live so close to one of the seven natural wonders of the world. She understands it is a privilege to share and educate people about the Great Barrier Reef and loves inspiring the rest of the team to do the same.

DESCRIBE A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT WORKING FOR CRUISE WHITSUNDAY?

To take someone into the water and show them the magic of this wonderland is a life changing moment for not only them but yourself as those are the moments that make you realise - now, this is why I do this! I am lucky enough to have made my job my hobby and my passion.

Crystal’s, real obsession, however, is sharks! She has worked with Whale Sharks on the

Skipper They say that once you fall in love with the ocean, it is hard to give it up and that is certainly true for Jonathan Bodley who has been a Skipper on and off for 30 years. From Electrician to owning a construction company, and more recently a ‘white boat captain’, Jonathan has always maintained his Skippers ticket and enjoys the mixed lifestyle it offers. When Jonathan took early retirement at 46 after the sale of his construction company, it wasn’t longer before boredom became a reality and he felt the call of the ocean again. This led him to Cruise Whitsunday where he works as a casual skipper running resort

Cruise Whitsundays operate a huge range of tours and ferry transfers around the Whitsunday Islands. From day trips to Whitehaven Beach on their air-conditioned vessels to sailing adventures on the purple catamaran Camira. Island transfers that whisk holidaymakers to Hamilton Island and their Great Barrier Reef full-day tours to the remote pontoon, which can include a Reef Sleep under the stars. To say that Cruise Whitsundays offer adventures that you will remember for the rest of your life is an understatement. In many circumstances, they offer adventures that will change your life! And it is their dedicated team that transform your experience from amazing to extraordinary. We meet the friendly faces and experienced individuals that work hard to create a unique Cruise Whitsundays experience.

Operations Manager Bringing an abundance of industry knowledge to his new role as Operations Manager for Cruise Whitsunday, Kelvin is happy he moved from Sydney to the Whitsundays with his wife and young family earlier this year. It was the lifestyle change they were looking for and his oldest child, Kaiden, will start at Cannovale State School next year. His youngest, Isabella, has just turned four. Back in Sydney, Kelvin was Dock Manager for Harbour City Ferries in Sydney. His main working background is in marine tourism and transport, working in various countries around the world and all over Australia.

Kelvin Parkin

“I think my diverse range of skills puts me in good stead to be part of the team at Cruise Whitsundays. There is a lot of knowledge and experience in the business, which I can bounce off, and hopefully I can bring some of my own experience and fresh perspective to the team.” DESCRIBE A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT WORKING FOR CRUISE WHITSUNDAY? I heard about our dive team being able to help a heavily disabled tourist being able to conduct a dive at the Great Barrier Reef. The sense of joy in delivering such an amazing experience for this person is what makes all the challenging days worth it. A FUNNY STORY YOU HAVE WITNESSED OR HEARD ABOUT ON A CRUISE WHITSUNDAY TOUR?

His average day used to be scoping dry docks and conducting vessel repairs which makes his new role at Cruise Whitsunday even more exciting. “Now I get to spend time on the reef or on the beach and when I’m in the office, I am overlooking the marina. It’s pretty perfect,” said Kelvin.

A guest once queried the Cruise Attendants if the Chicken was vegetarian - to which I hope the answer was “yes all chickens are vegetarian.”

Nicole Mathers

Human Resources Business Partner

In her role as Human Resources Business Partner for Cruise Whitsunday, Nicole loves working closely with the management team to provide strategic advice for all things people. “I am responsible for supporting positive change within the business, managing industrial relations and being an employee advocate. One of the reasons I love working in HR is the variety, every day is so different!” said Nicole. With a double business degree in Tourism and Events and Human Resource Management, Nicole certainly brings the academic credentials needed for the role. On a personal level, it also helps that she is a people person. “By far the people are what make this business so amazing. Rain or shine our crew give 100% to ensure our guests have once in a life time experience and everyone behind the

scenes works so hard to support our fantastic operation.” said Nicole. When Nicole moved to the Whitsundays last year with her boyfriend Tye, she fell in love with the laid back lifestyle this area has to offer. On the weekends she loves to paint, cook and go diving. MORE COVERAGE THAN EVER

BEFORE

Telecommunication and connectivity is now more important in our daily lives than ever before. It makes sense that as consumers, we want to be with a network provider that understands our needs. That’s why Optus have invested heavily in the Mackay and Whitsundays regions, to improve the speed and coverage of its data and voice services. The Optus network handles more than 30 million call attempts and 80 million SMS messages each day and carries 6,000 terabytes of data each week. It understands that its network needed to be improved to cope with growing demand, which is why Optus is committed to connecting regional Australia, by investing more in its network and regional communities. As one of Australia’s largest telecommunications companies, Optus delivers its superfast 4G Plus network coverage to 96.9 percent of the Australian population.

We chat to Optus Territory General Manager, Madonna Burgess, to find out what these improvements mean for our local communities. Madonna has been with Optus for twelve months and is accountable for driving brand awareness and customer consideration, working closely with all channels to deliver a customer experience that Optus can be proud of. Her territory covers from Bowen to Rockhampton, and west including the Bowen Basin. Tell us about the investment Optus has made locally to improve its speed and coverage? “In the Mackay Region over the past financial year, $2.07M was spent on new site development and $500K on upgrades to existing infrastructure. A further $1.5M is planned for new infrastructure this financial year. In the Whitsundays, $600K was spent on new site development with a further $1. 3M planned this financial year. This is part of our dedication to improve local connectivity in both coverage and speed across the region.” What does this mean for local families and businesses? “These new sites will provide improved coverage and capacity for locals and visitors to the region. For residents, businesses and visitors to the area, having reliable and consistent mobile coverage is a must and Optus continues to work with the local community to identify priority locations for our investment infrastructure. “People who live, work and visit the region will benefit from improved indoor and outdoor coverage, faster upload and download speeds and reduced call drop outs.” “Optus knows that consumers are reliant on mobile connectivity more than ever and are dedicated to delivering improved and faster data speeds.”

CEO Annette Harm PRDNATIONWIDE WHITSUNDAY “My boys are my 'why', as strong-willed and stubborn as they can be! Everything I do in life is for them and their future.” Sitting in the driver’s seat of PRDnationwide Whitsunday, Annette Harm is gripping the wheel, steering the success of this local company as its newly-appointed CEO. The Formula 1 fan, mother-of-two and business woman is a shining example of how women can simultaneously be at the pinnacle of business while raising a family. As she explains, it isn’t easy, and she still has her fair share of ‘mum-fails’. “I am immensely proud to be a female CEO in what traditionally is a male role, I’m a big advocate of girl-power! I have two wonderful sons, Riley is 10 and Lachlan is 6. At the end of the day, I’m a working mum like so many others, and struggle to get the work-life balance right. I still have mum-fails, like the day the school rang me to let me know the boys had no lunch. In the morning rush I had forgotten to order their tuckshop. I felt like a complete failure and had a bad case of the working-mum guilts, so I empathise with other women who are battling to get the balance right like I am,” she said. Annette was born in Brisbane but moved to the Calen area as a child. She had a relaxed country up-bringing, completing her secondary schooling at Calen P-12 campus. She moved to the Whitsundays after high school and has loved living here ever since. With an accounting background, Annette took a position four-and-a-half years ago with PRDnationwide as Financial Controller. Over the years she took on more responsibility and multiple roles within HR and office management, making her the obvious choice for CEO when the position became available. “I know our business and every department from top to bottom. I am an extremely loyal person, who bleeds PRD. I could not pick better people to come to work with every day and am truly grateful to be trusted and believed-in by them. Our team are my second family and I want to see them succeed,” Annette said. PRDnationwide Whitsunday was founded in the area in 1977 and has been a market-leader for more than 40 years. Many projects and developments have taken place because of PRDnationwide, something the business is proud of, having shaped the local area as we know it today. Annette admits to being a tomboy at heart, loving sport, especially Formula 1. “I know my McLaren’s from my Williams’ and of course support Ricciardo! I have been to the Grand Prix in Melbourne and would love to get to the Monaco race. I am a very keen NRL fan also. My youngest son has just started playing for the mighty Mini-Brahmans this year, so footy is very prominent in our house.” WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW? “I was honoured to be an escort runner with the Sydney 2000 Olympic torch. Taking part in a bit of Australian sporting history was an awesome experience. Running down the highway, being cheered on by hundreds of people while carrying the flame; what a mind-blowing experience it was!”

Kay Nyenuh MUSCLE GARDEN HEALTH & FITNESS CENTRE Hi, my name is Kay Nyenuh. I am the Founder and Owner of Muscle Garden Health & Fitness Centre. I am a Personal Trainer and I specialize in helping business owners get in the best shape of their lives and perform at their peak. I first started Muscle Garden a little over 6yrs ago as a personal training business working with clients in parks around Mackay. Today we are grateful to be in a fully equipped 24/7 state of the art fitness facility with a very high reputation in town. I’ve been a fitness fanatic for over 20yrs. And I’ve been in business for over 6yrs now. During this time, as a Personal Trainer, I’ve put in over 12,500 hours training clients and I’ve loved helping my clients transform not only their bodies but also the way they think and feel. www.corelife.com.au 46 46 www.corelife.com.au

As a gym owner, I love that we are a gym for the everyday mums and dads. A gym that is welcoming - where members are greeted by their names when they walk through the doors. A gym that is Family orientated - where members feel part of a support network bigger than just a gym. And one that is free of any form of intimidation - where members feel comfortable to train. And I love it because it sets us apart and most importantly it enables our members to thrive with their health and fitness goals. Coming from a childhood of helplessness living on refugee camps as a result of war, I developed a genuine passion for helping people. And health & fitness being another passion of mine, is one way that I’m providing that help.

And that’s why whether it’s free Strength Training for seniors every Saturday, Free boot camps for the community,Raising money for charity, or being involved with spreading the message of a healthy lifestyle, Muscle Garden is there. Because we’re not just a gym, we are a family that truly cares about helping you achieve your health and fitness goals. What I love most about what I do is seeing the genuine smiles and sometimes tears of joy on a client/member’s face when they’ve achieved a goal they didn’t think was possible before. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. My philosophy in life is, anything is possible if you want it bad enough. So, How Bad Do You Want It?!

Just over two years ago, Angie and Aaron Barton knew it was time for a career and lifestyle change. Angie came from a corporate background, owning and managing aged care facilities as a registered nurse and Aaron worked in the Defense Force before moving into property management. The couple decided to purchase their own business, but just couldn’t decide what. It was a chance holiday with their young nieces that brought them to stay at a tourist park. The couple remember looking around at the lifestyle and skills needed to make it work and thought “we could do this!” With hardly any experience in the industry, no friends living close-by and little knowledge of the local area, they took a leap of faith and moved to the Whitsundays as proud new owners of a local tourist park. The first few months were especially tough as the couple single-handedly ran the resort, learning as they went. For Angie, who came from a business background, this was a dramatic change in every way possible. “I went from running a team of 100 staff and caring for people during their last days to scrubbing toilets by myself!” Said Angie. Now, almost two years on, they are extremely happy they pushed through the tough days and are looking forward to exciting plans for the future. “Tropical Cyclone Debbie was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with,” said Aaron. “We lost so much and it has taken us a long time to rebuild. We are almost there now and the park looks incredible. We have a new swimming-pool, modern facilities and plans for several eco lodges as well as glamping tents, kids jumping pillow and an onsite bar and grill.” They are also excited to introduce a change of name and rebrand which will see Flametree Tourist Village become BIG4 Whitsunday Tropical Eco Resort. This new name embodies everything they are working to achieve at the park and will be an excellent addition to the area. Of course, as business owners, Angie and Aaron work at least six days a week but when they manage to steal an afternoon off they love spending time out on the water with family and friends. Angie is from Yorkshire in the UK originally and immigrated to Australia seven years ago with her mother and her daughter who now live with them at the park. Although emigrating was one of the toughest times in her life, just six months after she arrived in Australia Angie and Aaron met at a Surf Life Rescue evening in Brisbane and it was love at first sight. “He sat on the table next to mine,” recalls Angie. “Somehow we got talking and we talked all night. I have never met anyone who makes me laugh as much as Aaron” Aaron agrees; “Meeting my soul mate and getting her to marry me is the biggest achievement of my life!”

Together, Angie and Aaron have nurtured BIG4 Whitsunday Tropical Eco Resort and are continuing to transform it with their love and energy. In ten years time the couple agree; they want to be retired, sipping pina colada’s on the deck of a yacht! “We’ll have earned a break by then!” Laughs Aaron. photography by Norina Jane www.corelife.com.au 47

Super ladies of t Filling gaps in Mackay’s health care services is the motivating force behind Dr. Elizabeth McIntosh and her husband, John, opening a range of GP Superclinic’s throughout the Mackay region. Part of their vision for providing a better standard of health care is to have a broad range of experienced doctors, with varied special interests across a wide spectrum of medical issues. This includes having a substantial number of women doctors as part of their team, providing expert health care advice to Mackay’s GP Superclinic patients. In this edition, we meet some of the team.

DR. ELIZABETH MCINTOSH Despite spending many months of the year on whirlwind adventures; learning, travelling and experiencing new approaches to health and wellness, Dr. Elizabeth McIntosh is a born and bred Mackay local and loves nothing more than returning home to this perfect part of the world. She is a Doctor of Philosophy, specialising in metaphysical science (human behavioural science) and treats the mind, body and soul, specialising in positive mindfulness cognition. “It took over 15 years for me to complete my Doctorate through the University of Arizona USA, along with working fulltime, raising a family, managing several successful businesses and co-authoring two award-winning books. My positive philosophy proves that if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person.” “My husband and I have some exciting projects that we have been working on in between writing books and travelling. We are launching a new Mental Health and Suicide Intervention App later this year that will be rolled out for FREE to the Mackay community before its major launch in 2019. We have also just opened a drug and rehabilitation clinic, Eden, in Lombok, Bali that is currently taking clients from all over the world.”

DR. PEGAH ZAREI

DR. SANGEETHA (ANNA) VARGHESE

Born in Shiraz, a fabled city in south-western Iran whose name was once synonymous with viticulture and the culture of wine, is Dr Pegah Zarei. A GP with the Mackay Superclinic Group, she studied to become a doctor in Iran. She has been a doctor for 13 years and moved to Sarina in 2011 and then Mackay in 2012.

Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, is a peaceful and pristine state, with a climate similar to Mackay. It was here where Dr. Sangeetha Varghese (Anna) grew up with a closeknit family. She actively participated in music and classical dancing and studied medicine at Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala, graduating in 1998, before moving to Australia with her family in 2005. She moved to Mackay in 2012 and has been a doctor for 20 years.

With a passion to treat both body and mind, she has a special interest in mental health issues and chronic conditions. “I strongly believe there is a spiritual cause or reason for every physical ailment. That belief led me to learn about reiki, which in essence is healing with positive vibes of vital energy. I practice reiki for myself and my family.”

“My decision to become a doctor was driven by values instilled in me by faith and my family. I specialise in gynaecology (women’s health) and am also interested in children’s and mental health.” Anna loves travelling and is passionate about interior designing.

DR. FARIMA ABEDI Home of the Golestan Palace complex, the seat of power of the Qajar dynasty, Tehran is Iran’s capital city and one of its most secular and liberated cities. Dr. Farima Abedi grew up here with her parents and two sisters, whom she is very close to. She studied medicine in Iran, graduating in 2011, before moving to Australia in 2015 with her husband. “The reason I became a doctor was because my grandmother had been suffering from multiple medical conditions since I was a child. I love her very much, so I decided to become a doctor to cure her.” Because of her passion for the elderly and children, Dr. Abedi’s special interests are in children’s medicine and the elderly population.

She recently became a mother and loves her baby girl to the moon and back.

DR. SUMAIRA AUROOJ Dr. Sumaira Aurooj completed her medical degree in her home country of Pakistan. She moved to Mackay in 2015 to take up a role as JHO at Mackay Base Hospital. She is currently training to become a specialist. “Where I come from, we have a very rich culture. People are connected, despite having issues or worries in life, they don’t miss an opportunity to celebrate. Instead of being alone, they go out, share their worries and feel light.” As a GP, Sumaira believes you can give a lot back to the community by offering great health care.

“My patients share their issues with me in confidence, it gives me pleasure to be able to provide care to make a difference in their lives. I believe everyone has a role to play in life; you are a wife, mother, doctor, sister, daughter; there are huge expectations on you. All we need to do is to recognise and perform the role according to the best of our abilities and potential. In minds flooded with negative thoughts, bodies overrun by toxins and faces riddled with stress; there is little room left for health and happiness. Ditch the negativity, realise that you are worth the effort and enjoy all the happiness that this beautiful world can offer, with eXQisit You and the GP Superclinics, your guiding hands in health.

BLINK AND YOU MIGHT MISS IT HOW MUCH VALUE DO YOU PLACE ON YOUR EYESIGHT? For most people, the word ‘priceless’ comes to mind when we consider the importance of being able to see. In fact, 87 per cent of Australians rate eyesight as the most important sense, yet more than 10 million of us aren’t having regular eye tests. It’s certainly food for thought, when 90 per cent of vision loss in Australia is preventable or treatable and a massive 75 per cent of blindness avoidable! SO WHAT IS IT THAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK FROM GETTING YOUR EYES EXAMINED? If it’s the fear of facing a large bill, then put your stress aside. Eye tests at Specsavers Cannonvale are completely bulk-billed with no gap payments required. No health insurance is necessary, all you need is a valid Medicare card. Not only is this crucial health service available at no cost, you can be confident that you are receiving a specialist examination with one of the best eye clinics in Australia. Specsavers Cannonvale was recently nominated for the inaugural Doug Perkins Medal for Clinical Excellence 2018, one of only 12 shortlisted stores out of 360 in Australia. Specsavers Cannonvale Director, Laura Goodridge, says that she is delighted that their store has been recognised for a high standard of clinical care. “Since our store opened we have always aimed for the highest standards of clinical care and

patient outcomes for our local community. We place emphasis on delivering exceptional patient outcomes, providing a positive patient experience and our ongoing commitment to accessible eye health for locals. “We are proud to provide cuttingedge technology with OCT Diagnostic Scanning, which can detect early stages of eye diseases and conditions including, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. This test is included as part of all comprehensive bulk-billed eye tests. We were within the first 10 Specsavers in the country to install this machine and to our knowledge are the only eye specialists between Mackay and Townsville that use this technology. We have worked hard to be at the forefront of transforming eye health for our region.” she commented. OCT stands for optical coherence tomography. An OCT Diagnostic Scan is a powerful tool that allows optometrists to screen for abnormalities, assisting with the early detection of diseases. Specsavers believe Australians

deserve access to this advanced technology as a part of a normal bulk-billed eye examination, which is why it is included in the bulk-billed eye examination at no additional expense. Even if you believe you have healthy eyesight, an eye test should be at the top of your health check-list, at least once every two years. Most blindness in Australia is caused by macular degeneration. Imagine what you would miss if your eyesight deteriorated. To book an eye test, visit specsavers.com.au/ stores/cannonvale IT COULD SAVE YOUR SIGHT.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE MAJOR EYE CONDITIONS? 1. D iabetic Eye Disease which is the leading cause of preventable blindness in Australia. 2. M acular Degeneration which leads to vision loss and blindness. 3. Glaucoma which leads to gradual sight loss. 4. C ataracts, symptoms include cloudy or blurry vision, double vision and problems with lights. 5. R efractive Error which is caused by people needing glasses but not getting them or requiring a stronger prescription. www.corelife.com.au 55

TEE

HOW I LOST 60KG!

“I want to inspire people. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything. I hope this can help at least one person get their life back.” When you fight a mental battle with food, it’s easy to roll with the punches. Little by little, year by year, the weight increases incrementally until it reaches a point where it feels out of control. The moment Tee Taylor decided that she would rather throw the punches than roll with them, is when her life began to change. “People would say things like, ‘How did you let yourself go, how did you let yourself get that big’ but it doesn’t just happen like that. I was an emotional eater, I ate my feelings and had no selfcontrol or any idea what was happening to me until it was out of control. I tried so many diets and fads to try and lose weight. “I was 23 years old and 125kg when I took a chance on a personal trainer I found in the phone book. Ben trains from home and from my first session I knew he was someone I would stick with. He believed in me, encouraged me and did everything he could to help me. “It was a hard time in my life but a huge part of who I have become today,” Tee said. Through a grueling fitness regime and a change in her diet, Tee has lost an impressive 60kg. She started her transition to becoming a vegan by starting as a vegetarian and is now fully vegan. “I love animals more than eating them. The food I eat is so much tastier now; I can make a vegan-version of anything I used to eat and make it taste 100% better,” she commented. With a desire to learn self-defence, Tee took up Muay Thai, a decision which has proven to be more rewarding than she had first imagined. “I believe every woman should know how to throw a decent punch and defend themselves.”

Tee at 125kg

“I wanted to feel safe in any situation and confident that I could defend myself should the need arise. Before I knew it, I fell in love with the sport and training became my life. Johnny Borchardt from Neung Muay Thai encouraged this passion and has trained me to fight.

“Now here I am, four fights down, winning two of the four fights. It was something completely out of my comfort zone but now something that’s such a big part of my life,” she said. Out of her four fights, Tee said that it was her first fight that will remain the most memorable. “To get in the ring was no easy task, but I had trained so hard for it. I won my first fight and it made the training and all that time worth it. It’s a feeling I’ll never forget.” Losing weight and becoming a fighter, Tee feels that nothing is out of reach. She is currently studying to become a personal trainer so she can help others in the way that she was encouraged to change her life. “The physical side is hell hard, but the mental side of losing weight is tougher. I want to be able to use my experience to help others. Muay Thai has also trained me to become disciplined and strong. I’ve achieved things that I could have only dreamed about. I want to be that person in someone else’s life who helps them achieve their dreams too.”

Four ways to better hearing What are the best ways to look after your hearing to ensure you get the most from your ears. Good hearing is vital for being your best. It keeps your mind stimulated and helps you keep connected to family, friends and colleagues. It is important to ensure your hearing is at its peak so you can be too. 1. Protect your hearing It should come as no surprise that the best thing you can do for your hearing is to protect it. And there are a number of ways to do that. Like vision and sunglasses, wearing hearing protection when exposed to loud noises is a must. You can protect your hearing using a pair of earmuffs when using loud tools etc. but did you also know that if you like attending concerts and live acts, you can get earplugs that reduce the overall sound level without muffling it like earmuffs can do? It’s like turning the volume down on your stereo at home.

You can get ready to wear ones or you can invest in a pair of custom made ones moulded to fit your ears precisely. 2. Keep active and social Like muscles, if our auditory nerves don’t receive enough stimulation or exercise our hearing can deteriorate. This is not a call to go out and stand next to a jackhammer. Rather, ensure you listen to music, engage in conversation one on one and in groups. Not only will your hearing benefit but you will hone and retain the vital skill of listening. 3. Wear your hearing aids! This may seem like obvious advice. You have invested time and potentially money in your hearing aids but they won’t do you any good in the bedside drawer. If there’s a reason you aren’t wearing them discuss this with your audiologist. Or have

your hearing aids reviewed by another audiologist. In the majority of cases we find the reason people don’t wear their hearing aids is they were simply not set up correctly for their hearing loss or don’t fit their lifestyle. 4. Get your hearing tested Last but not least… get your hearing professionally tested. People wait on average 7 years before addressing hearing loss. That’s a long time to wait and research is unanimous in finding that the sooner hearing loss is treated the better it is for the overall long-term hearing health of the patient.

LEAVING REMOTELY OR HAVE A BUSY LIFESTYLE IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING STRAIGHT TEETH. Dr Rodriguez and her team at Braces 4U have introduced the latest technology to help you to achieve the smile that you always wanted. Dental Monitoring is one of the latest systems to revolutionise the orthodontic industry. This system enables you, the patient; to take regular photos of your teeth and upload them so we can keep track of your treatment.

HOW DOES DENTAL MONITORING WORK? Dental Monitoring is a mobile application you can have on your smart phone. It has a built-in algorithm so you can take photos of your teeth while undergoing orthodontic treatment and it will process the photos to record how your teeth are moving at various stages. By uploading the photos to an online system, the mobile application uses a 3D technology that allows Dr Rodriguez to see an accurate image of how your teeth look. This means we can make sure your teeth are moving as they should during treatment. Dental Monitoring doesn’t replace visits to us; we still want to see you. But in between your visits you can take pictures and we can keep an eye on how your treatment is coming along.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL MONITORING • Easy to use mobile application • Can keep a weekly record of how your treatment is progressing • O ur team can contact you for an appointment if we don’t think your teeth are moving as they should. • Get a precise image of how your teeth are looking • We can manage your treatment journey remotely

If you don’t want people to see your braces, Invisalign is the orthodontic treatment of choice. Invisalign is comfortable, clear, and removable. There’s nothing to hold you back. It’s time for Invisalign

create your own soul food recipe Cashew Cheese INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 1 Cup cashew pieces soaked overnight

• Rinse cashews well.

• 1-2 Cloves garlic

• Place all ingredients into a food processor – I have used a food processor and the Thermomix in the past.

• 1-2 Tbs nutritional yeast • 1tbs lemon juice

• 1 pinch salt

• L iquid to loosen – I use our Buchi Water Kefir.

HANDY HINT: You can substitute apple cider

vinegar for lemon juice of use a couple of drops of lemon oil. ALL INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE AT SOUL FOOD MARKET

• Blitz until you achieve the required consistency. • You can substitute apple cider vinegar for the lemon juice. • You can use filtered water instead of the kefir. Kefir contains probiotics and adds to the flavour. • This is a versatile recipe, you can use it as a dip, a sandwich spread or add cooking water from pasta dishes (for example) to make a cheese sauce. • Adjust the flavours to suit your palette. • Storage time is pretty short on this – 3-4 days

Gluten Free Seed Crackers INGREDIENTS • 1 Cup filtered water

• ½ Cup brown linseed

• 2 Tbs chia seeds

• ½ Cup pepitas

• ½ Cup Sunflower seeds • ¼ Cup sesame seeds • 1 Tsp fine salt

Flavour Bombs Cheese & Onion

• ¼ Cup nutritional yeast

Rosemary and Garlic

• 1 Tbs Rosemary chopped • 1 Tsp Garlic Powder

DIRECTIONS • In a large bowl, combine all the seeds and salt with your choice of seasoning. • Add the water, mix well and leave to sit for 30 minutes until the water has absorbed. This is an important step as it is how the crackers bind. • Spread the mixture onto your dehydrator sheets. Spread to an even level no more than 5mm thick. • Place in the dehydrator on temp 45 for 30mins. Remove from the dehydrator and score with a knife into cracker size pieces (this will make them easier to break at the end). • Put the crackers back into the dehydrator for another 6-8hrs. • Remove from dehydrator and break along the score lines you made earlier. • Store in a sealed container for up to one week ALL INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE FROM SOUL FOOD MARKET

there’s more to sunglasses than meets the eye In a country where the sun’s UV rays are especially strong, it is so important to protect your most precious sense - your sight, from these harmful rays. UV exposure can cause skin cancer, Cataract and Pterygium as well as being linked to diseases such as Macular Degeneration. There is a lot more to prescription sunglasses than meets the eye and it is important to be aware that not all sunglasses will provide equal protection from UV radiation. Hanks Optometrists by George & Matilda Eyecare offer prescription sunglasses that can be customised to suit your individual needs, providing the best possible vision and complete eye protection. As a provider of ZEISS lenses, you can be assured of the highest quality prescription sunglass lens. All ZEISS lenses offer 100% UV protection and optical quality

that is free of distortion, which gives you better side vision. In addition to this, there are many different coats that you can apply to your lenses. These include but aren’t limited to: polarised, mirrored, coloured tints and back surface antireflective coat. The various lens coats offered by ZEISS can be used in conjunction with one another to create your ideal sunglass lens solution. For example, a colour and mirror tint work well together to give you a high-fashion look. Whilst polarised and back surface antireflective are a good combination to give your eyes maximum protection from harsh reflective glare. If your lifestyle is based around the water, snow or open road driving then a polarised lens with back surface anti-reflective filter is an absolute must. It eliminates the horizontally oscillating

Adam & Eve [hair.face.body] & the salon owner Amie Chalmers' mission is to exceed clients expectations and bring experience, style & art to you - starting with your hair.

AFTER

Make me Over! BEFORE

One style at a time, we aim to provide a level of service & care to raise your confidence, raise eyebrows and bring your hair to the next level. We work with you every step of the way to achieve the look you desire. With the latest styles, high-quality products and a passion for what we do – you're sure to have a truly revolutionary experience.

I strategically chose extensions with the same beige tones & matching blonde colours for a perfect blend & flow of colour.

Cynitta now has a long, full & glamorous look!

COLOUR

STYLING

With Cynitta already being a blondie, we freshened up her regrowth with some babylights & a soft toner.

Once the extensions were in, secure & comfortable we used a GHD to create soft waves.

EXTENSIONS

As we moved up each vertical section we lightly sprayed Sebastian Trilliant for heat protection & shine, before curling the hair away from Cynitta's face.

Our main focus for this makeover was to add volume & length to Cynitta's hair. After we have rinsed, shampooed & lightly conditioned Cynitta's natural hair with Hydrate wash & finish, we started the process of blowdrying, smoothing & sectioning for the correct placement of our AAA grade human hair extensions.

www.corelife.com.au 68 68 www.corelife.com.au

Through the crown & parting area we sprayed Eimi Dry Me to assist in backcombing to promote volume & a soft curvature shape. Finally, we smoothed through some Orifluido Elixir for a radiating shine & smoothness for once again a glamorous look.

Make Up

I decided with Cynitta that we should accentuate her gorgeous blue eyes and went for a glamourous look. As always I start with the eye makeup. This is a great tip especially if you are using eyeshadows that are darker or have some fall out. Then you can clean up around the eye area before applying your foundation. Cynitta was wearing an olive green top and had a lovely almost forest green on her fingernails. I use these colours as my inspiration. I started with the gold eyeshadow “Half Baked” from the Urban Decay Naked Palette 2. I used the “Buck” eyeshadow to accentuate and contour the crease of her eye. Along her lash line and into the outer corner of her eye I used an eyeshadow from one of my self-made palettes it was a turquoise green shimmer.

I then airbrushed her foundation on using Element 2 Canvas Blend CB06 and CB08 for contouring. I also airbrushed the highlighter on. To further enhance her contour and highlight I used the Contour Palette from Tarte Cosmetics called “Tarteist”. I filled in and defined her brows using the Youngblood dark brow palette, which also contains a brow gel to help keep brows in place. I added colour to her cheeks using the crème blush “Tropical glow” from Youngblood as well as the loose blush “Sherbet”.

Full head of AAA grade tape extensions, style of your choice & full after care consultation

from $650 Lastly I applied the Ardell individual lashes, these I place all along the lash line. I begin with the longer lashes and then step them down to medium and then short in the inner corner of her eye. I absolutely love the individual lashes, they create length, fullness and that little extra drama without feeling like you are wearing lashes. To complete her look we used Youngblood lip liner in “Rose” and lipstick “Rosewater”

forty They say that until you’re broken, you don’t know what you’re made of. That it gives you the ability to build yourself up again, but stronger than before. After 18 weeks of training, I hit an emotional breaking point. For the first time, I left the gym after a sparring session in tears. I had been totally broken. My coach and mentor, Anton, pushed me to the physical limits during a sparring session and then verbally challenged me. He was using a principal of martial arts that puts people in situations that forces them outside their comfort zone, with the intention to ultimately break them. They say, when you come back from this you are stronger than before, and it builds resilience. Afterwards, it felt like my brave front had been stripped away and I was left feeling vulnerable. For so many years I’ve always put on a brave face

and I’m way out of my comfort zone when I don’t feel in control. Maybe it’s a place I need to go more often, but after days-on-end of photo shoots approaching the biggest edition of the year, I was tired, emotional, physically and mentally wrecked and I broke. It was hard, really hard. I love tough love! Sorry I should say I love dishing out some good old-fashioned tough love, but not so much a fan of being on the other end of it. For the next 24 hours I found myself breaking down in tears, not knowing why. I had to really take onboard what is was that had unraveled me. Like Anton said, “Now, that didn’t kill you did it?” On the outside it didn’t, but on the inside, it felt like it did. On reflection, I believe my greatest fear of being vulnerable, to any person or situation, comes

from my childhood and has everything to do with being good enough. Will I still matter? Will I still be loved? Can I still feel safe even when I’m not pretending to be perfect? Not one to give up, the next day, I hit the beach finishing my final session, for this challenge with a 30 minute run. Putting myself back out there, was the only way to start building myself up again. I guess breaking me did work! I have four weeks until I’m 40. I was broken, but I didn’t give up. I know I’m fitter, healthier and stronger than I was 18 weeks ago. This is the final push. It’s time to build a stronger Bec, who is comfortable showing my vulnerable side.

8 WEEK FITNESS, MARTIAL ARTS AND LIFESTYLE CHALLENGE WITH WHITSUNDAY MARTIAL ARTS.

was able to still work in some fitness and better nutrition choices even while travelling. With her advanced fitness from the first round, she hit the ground running and knew what was expected of her.”

Bec has now completed two back-to-back eight-week challenges with Whitsunday Martial Arts. Here is a run-down on how the second group of participants shed blood, sweat and tears in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

HOW HAS BEC’S ADVANCED TRAINING PUSHED HER BEYOND HER COMFORTZONE?

We chat to co-founders and trainers, Anton Zafir and Dan Zealand on WMA’s latest group of challenge champions. WHAT MADE THIS GROUP OF CHALLENGERS DIFFERENT TO THE LAST? “This group was smaller than the previous one, which changed the dynamic completely. Participants had more one-on-one time with coaches and the group formed tight bonds and pushed each other to succeed.” WHAT DOES THE 8-WEEK CHALLENGE HAVE IN STORE FOR THE NEXT GROUP? “We want people to know that it doesn’t matter what your lifestyle is currently, everyone can achieve excellent results. Everyone is time-poor in one way or another, but when your desire outweighs your excuses, you’ll see a change in your health and fitness. It’s a challenge which will leave you feeling proud of your accomplishment at the end.” HOW DID BEC’S PROGRESS CHANGE FROM THE FIRST TO THE SECOND CHALLENGE? “Bec definitely faced some hurdles during this challenge with her hectic schedule, but from what she learnt from the first time around she

One of the elements of the 8-Week Fitness and Martial Arts Challenge is stepping outside of your comfort zone. Sparring / live drilling is not for everyone as it brings you face-toface with combat, but this builds the resilience you need to be able to practice martial arts. It’s confronting; however it’s been tested and proven that in controlled environments, being outside of your element builds the mental fortitude needed for lifelong discipline and resilience. It was an important lesson for Bec to learn; that her coaches are there to build her up, by showing her what she can fight through, that she’s physically and mentally capable of pushing harder. Breaking each other mentally and physically, then working as a team to build each other back up is what helps everyone grow.” WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN MIND FOR BEC FOR HER FINAL FOUR WEEKS? “We will continue to step up the intensity of her training and will continue to push her outside of her comfort zone, putting her in positions that test her physically and mentally where she is not in control. Through this she will adapt, evolve, develop and keep pushing boundaries. We know how strong she is, before her fortieth, we want her to see it. It’s the sprint to the finish line now but we will be there supporting her to the end and beyond.”

JAKE LAURENCE

Jake Laurence celebrating his win with brother Cooper Laurence and coach Anton Zafir

When Jake’s mum noticed he was getting into a bit of trouble fighting at school she called his uncle to see if he could help. Jake’s uncle is a boxer and a trainer, also a role model for Jake. He taught him how to channel his aggression and use his physical energy in a healthy, controlled way, by boxing in a ring instead of the schoolyard. Originally from Newcastle, Jake moved to Airlie Beach for six months and, like many of us living in the area, decided to extend his stay. Three years later, Jake has almost finished his apprenticeship as painter and decorator, working full-time on Hamilton Island. On top of this he manages to squeeze in a training session every day. “Monday, Wednesday and Friday are boxing technique and fitness classes at Whitsunday Martial Arts (WMA). Tuesday and Thursday I’m either at WMA doing a bit of my own thing, generally bag work, or I'll go for 7km run and do some weights at the gym. Saturday mornings are sparring day, my favourite day of the week!, then Sunday I go for a 12km run and finish off with a hill sprint to my house.” said Jake. It takes this kind of commitment and dedication to maintain the physical strength needed to compete professionally as a boxer. Although www.corelife.com.au 72 72 www.corelife.com.au

Jake is still considered an amateur, he hopes that by winning a few more fights he will reach professional status soon. Until recently most of his fights have been at pubs, clubs and taverns. Then, in May this year, Jake competed in his first all styles martial arts tournament in Townsville and won the boxing division by a unanimous decision. Then, in mid-August, he boxed in an octagon cage fight in Brisbane and won in front of all his family that had travelled up from Newcastle to watch him for his birthday. “I fought a guy with twice as many fights as me and to come away with the win was awesome! It was a good way to kick off the birthday celebrations!” said Jake. Behind every champion is a group of people that support, train and believe in them. For Jake, this is his second family at WMA in Airlie Beach. “WMA has helped massively in allowing me become the fighter I am today. We have a family-like atmosphere there; everyone motivates and pushes each other to be the best they can be. I couldn't ask for a better team.” said Jake.

Jake recommends that anyone who is keen to try boxing/martial arts give WMA a go. “Whether it be for the fitness or if you want to fight, they have the right atmosphere to bring out the best in you!” GET TO KNOW JAKE WHAT’S ON THE MENU? I like to eat clean most of the time besides cutting weight for a fight. This means a lot of chicken breast and greens, steak once a week and plenty of fruit - bulk passionfruit! IGHTER WHO INSPIRES F YOU MOST? Vasiliy Lomachenko, he’s changed the game debuted in 2013 and has had 12 fights all being world title fights. His whole style of fighting is something out of the matrix - he’s mastered fighting angles! WHAT’S YOUR BEST MOVE? I don’t think I really have a best move, but my favourite punch would have to be the right uppercut. WHAT IS YOUR WEAKNESS? Food! I actually consider eating to be a hobby of mine, not ideal when cutting weight!

rom a concept born on Daydream Island to having seven barber shops open throughout Queensland, the popularity of Kazza’s Barber Shops can be attributed to good old-fashioned customer service. Co-owner, Karen Brown, started Kazza’s on Daydream Island in 1991 before opening a one-chair barber shop in the main street of Airlie Beach in 1994. A second shop soon followed in Proserpine, followed by a third in the Whitsunday Shopping Centre in 1999. The Cannonvale position proved popular and this shop still operates today. It was joined by a Kazza’s being opened in Mackay’s Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre in 2008 and Willows Barber Shop in Townsville the following year. In 2013 a Kazza’s was built in Stocklands, North Rockhampton, followed by two more in Townsville in 2015 and 2016. With six sites operating strongly, owners Terry and Karen Brown were ready to settle down, when an opportunity too wonderful to pass up was presented. “An existing tenant in the Whitsunday Plaza had decided not to renew their lease, and we were offered the opportunity to lease in this position. We opened our seventh shop here in the Whitsundays, where it all began, and this complements our other position in Cannonvale. We’ve been operating since August 1st and already we’ve seen promising growth,” Karen said. Kazza’s in Whitsunday Plaza offers the latest innovations for a clean shave and to keep clients looking razor-sharp. It keeps the

traditional Kazza’s look but offers modern adaptations for comfort. The success of Kazza’s is due largely to the professionalism delivered by the teams of experienced barbers who train to deliver modern haircuts as well as old-fashioned cutthroat razor shaves. The barbers and stylists take great pride in their work and enjoy getting to know the preferences of their regulars. Kazza’s Barber Shops offer a full range of haircuts for all the family; ladies, men and children. Girls are just as welcome as guys, with experienced stylists available to discuss the latest looks.

The little extras offered to men make all the difference, including beard and moustache trims, full cutthroat face and head shaves, even eyebrows and ear hair trimmed. Shaves are done the old-fashioned way with hot towels and witty banter. Fashion cuts including tracks and fades are also available. Senior’s discounts are available and no appointment is necessary. Simply step through the door to be looked after by one of the friendly team. Keep an eye in-store and on Kazza’s Facebook and Instagram pages for promotions and specials.

Young Minds in Modern Times

How do our young people feel about life, health an d body image? We sit down with two students from St Cath’s in Pr oserpine to find out their thou ghts.

Hi, I am Angel Camp, age 16. I live in Bowen, Queensland and have lived there my whole life. I love doing volunteer work with my local PCYC and hanging out with friends.

Music tends to cheer me up as I feel that singing my lungs out makes me feel better. I also have great friends that I can talk to as they are very understanding and accepting people.

What do you think about body image? When I first started high school, a lot of people were concerned with their body image, weight, appearance, etc. Overhearing these comments made me worry about how I looked; was I pretty enough? Skinny enough? Now, I don't think about these things as much. I don't feel pressured to look a certain way because I know that my friends like me for who I am. Everyone should be able to feel comfortable and beautiful in their own bodies.

What do you need to be healthy? For starters, the definition of healthy is to be in a good physical and mental state. Nutritious food is always the way to go. My Mum is from the Philippines and makes the best food! Exercise and sport are also great.

When you feel sad what do you do to lift your mood? When I feel upset, I like to eat or listen to music.

What’s life about? Life is about making the most of every day. I believe that a day without laughter is a wasted day as one of my favourite past times is to have a good belly laugh. Life is also about being happy. Surround yourself with good people, eat good food, be kind to one another, and smile.

Hi, I am Loujana Jade van Dalen, and, I'm am 12. I am originally from Gladstone and moved around a fair bit before settling here. I don't wish to move again any time soon! I have two big brothers and my main passions are sport, singing, and acting

When you feel sad what do you do to lift your mood? I find that listening to music, watching a good movie or spending time with friends and I'm lucky enough to be best friends with my mum.

What do you think about body image? Body image, in my mind, is a constant factor of my life. As much as you wish not to, you're constantly comparing yourself to others, e.g. is she prettier than me? She's way better at sport than me, she's so much more talented, she's skinnier, she's way more popular than me. When I look in the mirror I always seem to find the negative things about myself, like how I have pimples and sometimes I think I'm not skinny enough. I can definitely see that it affects my friends also because they are always comparing themselves too. But, I just block it out and get on with my life, and try to look at all the good things, like Shawn Mendes, sloths and my family.

What do you need to be healthy? I think that good food, exercise, friends, family, and hobbies are all a good way to keep your mind and body healthy. What’s life about? I think life is about whatever you make of it, and about taking chances and being brave. I know what I just said was probably a little cheesy but I think it's true. I also think that when someone doesn't believe in me it just makes me want to do it even more, which pushes me to live my life to the fullest.

HOW PLANTS CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH WITH PLANTS WHITSUNDAY Plants in an around your home create a beautiful backdrop to your life. When you dig a little deeper, however, you’ll discover that the benefits of indoor plants go far beyond looks. Plants help reduce stress and increase wellbeing and productivity As most of us already know, being around plant life makes us feel more at ease with our surroundings. Our mental health improves as we experience less stress and increased positivity levels. Some studies have shown that plants can assist in lowering blood pressure and help people to recover from illness at a much faster rate. Studies have shown that we become more productive, have increased health, make fewer mistakes, and are overall happier. Plants help you to breathe easier and improve air quality Many scientific studies have been carried out that determine that most indoor plants help to clean the air we breathe by eliminating harmful toxins such

as Formaldehyde. This toxin can be released into the air from furniture and flooring, as well as unassuming common household items such as air fresheners, hair products and nail polish. It is beneficial to place indoor plants within a breathing zone of about 2 square metres of which you normally sit or sleep. Other particular benefits of indoor plants include: • Reducing carbon dioxide levels • Reducing levels of certain pollutants, such as benzene and nitrogen dioxide • Reducing airborne dust levels • Keeping air temperatures down • Act as natural air purifiers and humidifiers

Gardening Outdoor gardening provides many physical and mental health benefits such as: • enjoyable aerobic exercise and stretching • exposure to some vitamin D and fresh air • a rewarding end result to be proud of and a beautiful place to relax! TIP At Plants Whitsunday you can purchase fragrant plants such as dwarf Kaffir Lime trees, Jasmine or Murraya paniculata (mock orange) to fill your home and garden with a wonderful fresh smell. It’s a natural and chemical-free way to freshen your home.

DECADES OF HEALTH The

AS OUR BODIES AND MINDS CHANGE OVER THE YEARS, SO DOES THE WAY WE NEED TO CARE FOR OUR HEALTH. EVERY DECADE BRINGS ABOUT NEW LIFE EXPERIENCES AND THESE EXPERIENCES IMPACT ON OUR BODIES.

20’s

Our twenties is an exciting time full of new experiences, travelling, new careers and generally enjoying life. It is easy to overdo things, drinking, smoking, unprotected sex and even drugs but it is important to remember the way we treat our bodies in our twenties can pay dividends in the future.

Checks Skin Cancer (get a free mole check from your doctor) Blood pressure, blood cholesterol and glucose (diabetes) STI tests (There are no symptoms with chlamydia and it can cause infertility if left untreated) Self-examination of the breasts, testicles for lumps or swelling Check your immunisations are up to date Family planning

The

30’s

This decade is where momentous occasions occur like the birth of your children, your career taking off or paying off your first home. As a result your health can take a back seat. It is worth getting a complete health check in your early thirties and having three alcohol free days a week.

Checks The same as above plus an eye test is advised

The

40’s

Your forties is a time when things can start catching-up on you and you might be feeling a bit run-down. Juggling the demands of work and family commitments is a challenge, the key is to find a work-life balance and focus on quality time to do things you enjoy.

Checks

The same checks as in your twenties and thirties plus Blood tests for kidney and liver function and iron levels Breast screening for women

The

50’s

You will experience many changes to your body in this decade. For women, the most significant is menopause and for men you may find your libido is affected. It is wise to go to your doctor for annual check-ups for blood pressure and cholesterol. Once you reach 50 and beyond you may become more at risk of some cancers including breast cancer, bowel and ovarian cancer. You should become more aware of symptoms and ensure you are having the appropriate health checks.

Checks Women need bone destiny screening during menopause, men need to a prostate test and everyone should get checked for bowel cancer test. This is in conjunction with an annual check-up at the doctors.

60’s and beyond Your retirement years can be some of the best in your life. Finally you are free to relax and enjoy life! The only thing that can stand in your way are any health issues. This is why it is so important to keep physically fit, remain connected to others and seek a professional opinion when you notice a change in your body that you are concerned about.

Checks Ensure you maintain all your checks from the previous years and it is recommended you also get a flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine.

K C A B S ’ T I M O O B A WITH Experts called it and as predicted the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions are starting to experience growth resulting from mining exploration, production and maintenance from Bowen Basin mines lifting significantly in 2018. BIS Oxford Economics released a report Mining in Australia 2017 to 2032, with results indicating growth in Australia’s resource sector, with particular note mentioned of the expected resurgence in the Bowen Basin. After experiencing a significant downturn from 2012 to 2017, experts believe that the worst is over. While some Bowen Basin mines continued to produce recordproducing yields during this time, there was a significant drop in construction and exploration, which has the flow-on effect of slowing the economies in supporting areas such as the Isaac and Mackay regions. BIS Oxford Economics associate director of construction, maintenance and mining, Adrian Hart, confirmed that the main message from this report was that the worst of the slump has passed and communities could look forward to rising economic activity. Investment is increasing considerably, this is without Adani in the equation at all, so the report is taking a prudent and careful approach. If Adani does come to fruition, the expected improvement will be even greater. The Central Queensland economy is set to be boosted by over $330 million during the construction phases of the Byerwen, Styx and Taroborah coal mining projects.

WHERE ARE THESE NEW MINES? Byerwen Coal Project is located 20 kilometres west of Glenden. Employment estimates are 100 people during construction and 300 to 500 during operations. Production is estimated up to 10 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year. Coal from the Byerwen Mine will be railed to Abbot Point Coal Terminal for export. Byerwen Coal was granted the mining leases required for the project in May 2017. Construction and mining operations have commenced. Styx Coal Project (Central Queensland Coal Project) located 85 kilometres from Byfield. Employment estimates are 200 people during

construction and 250 during operations. Production is estimated for two to five million tonnes of high-grade thermal coal and/or semi-soft coking coal. The Project is a joint venture partnership between CQCPL (99%) and Fairway Coal Pty Ltd (1%). Taroborah Coal Project is located 22 kilometres west of Emerald. Employment estimates are 150 people during construction and 350 during operations. Production is estimated at five million tonnes of coal per year. Coal will be transported by Minerva sized trains to Gladstone. Including construction, the mine life will be 21 years, followed by a decommissioning period of approximately 12 months.

BARNABY JOYCE MP VISITS MACKAY TO TALK MINING Last month, the Innovation, Industry, Science and Resources Committee travelled to Mackay for a public hearing on mining and regional business. Committee Chair, Mr Barnaby Joyce MP, said the purpose of the meeting was to meet with businesses and individuals in Mackay, where big coal projects throughout the region, including Moranbah South, Byerwen, Styx and Taroborah had the potential to contribute significantly to building regional economies in Central Queensland. “It’s important that businesses in the region have the opportunity to bid for the construction and other work that comes along with this kind of investment”, My Joyce said. “The Committee wants to understand how much of the wealth generated through

resource extraction stays in the area where the resources are extracted.” As confidence returns and strong coal prices contribute to a strengthening local economy, the future looks bright for our local communities. www.corelife.com.au 79

MINING & INDUSTRY IN FOCUS

Looking for a job in mining? TRYING TO GET A JOB IN THE MINING INDUSTRY CAN BE A LITTLE LIKE MINING ITSELF. YOU KNOW THERE IS GREAT REWARD TO BE FOUND UNDER THE SURFACE BUT A LOT OF OBSTACLES STAND IN YOUR WAY. BREAKING THE SOIL, OR TAKING THAT FIRST STEP IS THE HARDEST. BUT THE MORE YOU PERSEVERE, THE FURTHER YOU DIG, EVENTUALLY YOU’LL STRIKE GOLD. OR IN THIS CASE, COAL.

Create a good C.V Don’t underestimate the power of a good C.V. Imagine your application sitting on a desk among 100 others. What will make yours stand out? It’s important to have your strengths, experience and skills clearly listed, as a potential employer or its agency doesn’t have time to read between the lines. Also, ensure you have great references.

Talk to someone already working in the mines Money may be your main motivation, but do you know what it’s really like to work long, physically-demanding days at a hot, remote, dusty location? Not everyone has what it takes and many people realise it’s not where they want to be. Talk with someone in the industry to get the inside word on what it’s really like before you spend money on up-skilling.

Security, medical and drug tests You will need to pass a lot of tests to even set foot onto a mine site, so have a think about whether these are achievable before you have your heart set on a job in a mine. Most mine sites will require you to have a NPC (National Police Clearance) which you can apply for online. A pre-employment medical will also be asked for. Most medical clinics can provide mining-particular medicals, if you can get one of these prior to your application, it is another advantageous step as the employer will know you are fit and healthy. You will need photo ID to give to the medical clinic for your pre-employment medical. You will also be required to pass drug and alcohol screening before you are allowed on site. If you are lucky enough to be considered for a role, don’t celebrate the night before you’re due on site, as most mine sites have a zero tolerance.

Register with as many agencies as possible Not all entry-level positions are advertised and most are at the discretion of the mine. Your chances are greatly increased if you register your interest across as many employment agencies as possible, especially those with big mining clients. Only apply for jobs which are within your skillset.

Up-skill or get some experience Have you considered working in civil construction or transport to get some of the tickets you need for mining? You will become a more attractive applicant for mining jobs if you already possess some of the tickets commonly required. Front-end loader, heavy-rigid, forklift; these are all advantages. You could obtain these privately but you will need to pay for them. For entry level Mobile Equipment Operator positions (truck, road train, dump truck etc) a HR-X license is usually a good start as this is a basic requirement of any operator position.

Our best advice on getting a start in mining is to contact the mining companies directly, as each company has their own procedures and recruitment requirements for any entry level roles that do become available.

For more than 20 years, the Mastermyne Group has been a leading provider of a range of specialist contracting services to the resource sector. Despite industry ups-and-downs, Mastermyne continues to be a top employer of people to deliver a full suite of quality mining services to the coal industry. Offering a diverse range of opportunity, meet some of the minds who make up part of the Mastermyne team across Queensland.

Tony Zahra

17 years of service Project Manager Mastermyne Mining With more than 17 years of experience with Mastermyne, Tony Zahra is identified by Managing Director Tony Caruso as the “red cordial” of Mastermyne’s business. He has worked his way through the ranks from coal miner to project manager and is considered an integral part of the company’s DNA. Currently based in the Bowen Basin, Tony looks after a crew of around 260 personnel in a high-output underground mine.

Russel Counsell 10 years of service

Project Manager Mastertec As a Project Manager for Mastertec, Russel Counsell ensures his crew maintains a safetyfocused and production-oriented service to their clients. “Our people are our most valuable resource, we have a lot of talent amongst our workforce, so I see my job as doing my best to allow them to perform at their best,” he said. He is currently based on a major scaffold contract near Mackay.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT HOLIDAY TO THE UNITED STATES? “My wife is from the Lafayette, Louisiana and her brother, Jonas, took us to a deer hunting camp. As I sat on the porch and cracked open a beer to watch the sunset, a deer walked towards me. I called out to Jonas, who was making Gumbo, and he came out in an apron and socks and shot the deer from the deck. That story is legendary with the hunters from around those parts now.”

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB? “Erecting scaffold that are exposed to open-sea conditions, which ultimately go under water during each tide and compete against large swells.” WHAT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? I took up BMX racing, purely to understand the sport when my kids started racing. Within six months I had three trips to hospital due to my all-or-nothing approach; stitches, then a broken collar bone and lastly I was knocked out and required bracing for my front teeth to restraighten.”

Charles Hatte 5 years of service

Project Engineer Mastermyne Group Charles started with Mastermyne as an 18-yearold while on university holidays. He rates that as one of the best experiences of his career. “It was my first job in mining, I was with only three other Mastermyne employees cutting the first portals at a new mine. I had great mentors and it rates as one of the best projects I have been involved with,” he said. He is a mechanical engineer now based as part of a Bankable Feasibility Study team in Mackay, working on new underground projects.

www.corelife.com.au 84 84 www.corelife.com.au

WHAT MAKES MASTERMYNE A GREAT COMPANY TO WORK FOR? “It’s the people within the organisation, from the Managing Director Tony Caruso to our underground workforce; how we interact with each other with a single focus on our operations.”

WHAT MAKES MASTERMYNE A GREAT COMPANY TO WORK FOR? “The people. Working with positive, driven people always makes any working environment fun. Mastermyne offers plenty of opportunities for personal and professional development and will support you 100 per cent if you put in the hard yards.” WHAT DO YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF MINING? “I’m involved in primary production and run a cattle property with my wife and parents on the Central Highlands. It’s a great place to raise kids and allows me to take my mind off the engineering and mining side of work.”

Andrew Peters 7 years of service

1st Year Apprentice Mastermyne Mining An experienced underground coal miner, Andrew has recently transitioned into a mechanical apprenticeship role with Mastermyne. He has spent seven years at the same site, this year being his first as a mechanical apprentice. “I always had an interest working on cars and bikes at home, so this is a great opportunity to be able to do my dream job with Mastermyne,” he said.

Lyn Rackemann 12 years of service

Site Administrator Mastertec With 12 years of industry experience, Lyn Rackemann provides on-site administration support for our major scaffold contract near Mackay. After 12 years with Mastertec, she says she has learned to be adaptable and open to all possibilities. She joined the Mastermyne Group of companies in 2014 when the business she worked for was acquired by the Group.

HOW DID MASTERMYNE SUPPORT YOUR CHANGE OF CAREER? When the apprenticeship became available, Mastermyne knew it was something I was passionate about. I’m grateful to them for this opportunity based at the same site I started at seven years ago as a clean skin.” WHAT’S SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOU? “On site my nick-name is Big Bird. Being on the same site for so long, most of the mine know of me in some way or another, mainly because I’m a tad louder than most.”

WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY FOR MASTERTEC? “I provide support to employees, preparation for payroll, filing, requisition of supplies and facilitate employee’s inductions for site access,” WHAT’S SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW? “I love to make people laugh. Laughter connects you to people; there is no social hierarchy when you’re just having a good laugh.”

Madelein Leach 6 years of service

Payroll Officer Mastermyne Group Mastermyne first met Madelein when her husband was being interviewed for an underground electrician’s role. The husband-and-wife team were living in New Zealand at the time and were looking for an opportunity to re-locate to Australia. Mastermyne received a two-for-one deal when they employed Herman and offered Madelein a position in the corporate office team.

WHAT IS IT YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR MASTERMYNE? “I feel trusted and part of a big picture. My colleagues are my family, not only in the corporate office but also in the field. Being far from where I used to call home, I totally defied the phrase you cannot choose your family. As much as Mastermyne chose me, I chose them to be a great part of my life.” WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW? “I had some humorous encounters being fresh off the boat when I moved to Australia. Initially I thought the vinegar on beaches was to be used for your fish and chips, what a great initiative from councils I thought. Oops!”

His expertise in fixing a broad range of equipment coupled with his experience supervising and planning in multiple mining sites led to the creation of DAC Mining Services.

fitters. The ability to provide support across a diverse range of areas backed by our passion and experience ensures our clients receive the best people for the job. Recently, two of our diesel-fitters were awarded with letters of recognition of BMA Charter Values at Goonyella Mine which is an example of how much pride they take in their work, respecting both our business and our client’s,” Drew said.

A family-owned and operated service provider, Drew founded DAC Mining Services alongside his wife, Lisa, who brings years of safety training, HR and management experience from both the mining and resources sector. This experience gives Lisa the expertise to oversee the operational aspects of the company as its Field Service Coordinator. This collaboration of skills has resulted in a talented team delivering a high level of value and service to its clients in the mining, quarry, civil and agricultural sectors.

Married for 18 years and in business together for 14 of those, Drew and Lisa’s belief in that each other’s experience and skills has been a driving force behind their success.

From humble beginnings since its inception in 2004, DAC Mining Services has contracts in place with all major mining companies; including Glencore, Peabody, BMA and Anglo. With permanent long-term contracts; DAC Mining is seeking new tradespeople to join its team, offering proven job security and a variety of rosters for the right people. “The strength of our team has always been our greatest asset. We talk to the client about the job and hand-pick the person with the right skill-set. We maintain a high level of diesel-fitters, boilermakers, auto electricians, HV electricians and experienced support staff including service people, TA’s and tyre

“We believe in each other. Like any business it has its challenges, but together we have forged ahead and overcome all the obstacles along the way. We have a strong team behind us and have become a major player in the labour market for highly-skilled tradespeople. We are also recognised as an employer of choice, providing stable and long-term employment in a market that has had its fair share of challenges,” shares Lisa. Not only did DAC Mining Services survive the downturn, it thrived in a challenging market. Their expertise enables maintenance to run efficiently and reduces cost and downtime for clients, making its service an asset to its clients. “We have a good business model, great relationships with our clients and a loyal team who work hard to provide a quality service. Having a bunch of skilled tradies helps immensely. We care about our clients, our people care about their work and we care about our people. That’s what makes the difference.

We also learned how to adapt and overcome with the ability to make changes necessary to support our clients. I have high expectations of my maintenance team as quality is paramount in our line of work,” Drew said. We have been in business for 14 years and have proven our reliability and stability in a volatile market. We also place a strong emphasis on safety to look after our people and our reputation as marketleaders.” If you are a skilled tradesperson who is willing to put in a good day’s work for a great day’s pay, DAC Mining Services want to hear from you. “A Standard 11 or BMA Core Induction are essential along with a Coal Board Medical. These are the basic requirements we look for, but RII qualifications for Working at Heights and Confined Spaces and add-ons like Forklift licenses also go a long way. It’s no exaggeration to say that mental fitness has emerged as a critical lever for productivity in mining. Stories from the Underground with Brodyn Friend

N

ot many people could work a 12 hour shift cutting coal out of rock several kilometres below the surface. For underground miner, Brodyn Friend, it is his shift mates and loving family back home that make this daily grind endurable. Brodyn works a five on five off roster, alternating between day and night shifts, as a Miner Driver, cutting the coal from seams deep underground. Each day Brodyn and his shift mates pack up their ‘Drifty’, which is an underground truck and drive 30 minutes into the heart of the mine. From here, they walk a further 400mters down a dark, humid roadway to the Miner, which is a 90tonnes vehicle that cuts the coal out. Brodyn starts up the Miner and works like this for the rest of the 12hr shift. The days are long, hot and often monotonous but he has some great workmates and it is the friendly banter they share that makes Brodyn enjoy his job. “We look out for each other’s safety, we all open up to each other and talk about what’s bothering us or just like to share a joke. You have to have a close group of workmates after a 12hr shift and an open shower block with no single cubicles, where the banter continues,” says Brodyn. After his shift, Brodyn heads to the “mess” (canteen area). They usually eat well and often have themed nights such a Greek or Mexican.

“We can have Steak, chicken or fish every night. There is always salad and fruit available and I must admit, it is a real challenge not to eat everything at the dessert bar.” Said Brodyn. After this, they can head to the bar, play a game of pool or ping pong and on the weekends there is a projector to watch the footy. There is also a pool, a gym and a sauna plus a tennis/ basketball court. Of course, a big issue for many miners is missing their family at home. The same is true for Brodyn. “It has its advantages and disadvantages,” says Brodyn. “It’s the events you miss, but it’s also the time you miss. I feel like my kids grow a foot every time I’m away. The advantages are that I get to provide for my family. Also, in previous jobs when I came home every night it would just be in time to put the kids to bed. Where as now it’s hard being away but when I am back it’s more quality time.” Brodyn’s wife Sarah, says that people often think of a stereotype of a miner’s wife living the highlife but it is not like that for her.

Brodyn Friend with his family, Sarah, Cooper and Emmi together yet! But we know he loves his job so it makes it worthwhile.” Another major consideration for any underground miner is safety. We’ve all heard stories of collapsed tunnels and trapped miners, making mining one of the most hazardous (and as a result highly paid) professions. Safety is of paramount importance for everyone in the mine and Brodyn is a trained Mines Rescue team member. “Mines rescue is an amazing opportunity to be trained in helping my mates underground if anything were to go wrong,” said Brodyn. “We train in real life scenarios. Anything from re-ventilating the mine to saving someone that just had part of the roof fall down. I love being trained in mines rescue because I am now more aware of fixing something small before it becomes a big problem later.” Brodyn’s mentality is admirable. He overseas safety at the mines, works hard to look after his family and always has a smile on his face. If you could pick a man to represent all that is good about the mining industry, he would be your guy!

MINING & INDUSTRY IN FOCUS

MY MINING MONEY WHO GOT ALL THE MONEY YOU MADE FROM THE LAST MINING BOOM?

The reality is that for most people it ended up with the retailers of toys, whether big boys’ toys or toys for the kids because Dad was away so much. Maybe this mining boom, it’s time to use your experience to make some changes and really achieve something. We’re not the Fun Police and aren’t talking about saving everything and spending nothing. It’s about scoping it out, thinking it through and setting some guidelines. Allocating money towards different buckets for different goals. Say one regular amount for lifestyle choices day to day, some for

medium term things like holidays or larger purchases and then some towards long term goals like reducing debt, buying a big asset, taking a big holiday or building up your investments.

who’ve reached their financial goals. They have a much broader skill set and helping people take control of their financial lives and get on track towards financial freedom is often the best work they do.

HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT?

Have a think and a talk to those close to you. Make this the boom where the crib room talk is about how you’ve taken control of your finances and not just the last big toy purchase.

It’s a bit like committing to get fitter, often the best method is to employ a personal trainer. They have skills in analysing where you’re at now, clarifying what you’re trying to achieve, putting together a realistic plan and then giving you someone to come back to for help along the way. AIRLIE BEACH FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 2018

Music vibes with a view T

here’s no better destination in Australia to lap up the energy of world-class entertainment than the raging resort-town of Airlie Beach during its annual music festival. But when you want to escape the esplanade, the ultimate retreat from the street can be found at Anchor Bar at Whitsunday Terrace Resort. Here, you can experience one of the music festival’s favourite laid-back venues, with sweeping pool-side vistas, creative cocktails and amazing food, accompanied by live music. Elevated above the bustling tropical village of Airlie Beach, it’s our pick of places to enjoy the sunset over the Coral Sea while chilling to some great beats with a cocktail in hand.

Owners, Josh Knutson and Leah McMillan, have been fans of the Airlie Beach Festival of Music since its inception. This is their fourth year as a venue, bringing a dynamic dimension to the festival’s lineup of places to party. “It’s the best party to be found in paradise. Only at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music can you see 74 bands alongside 74 islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. Live music is at the heart of Anchor Bar, we regularly have local and international acts grace our poolside, so it makes sense to be a part of the biggest music party of the year. We provide a relaxing atmosphere with the best view in Airlie Beach, some great bands and an endless flow of cold beer,” Josh said.

Music-lovers will also be treated to live oyster shucking at Anchor Bar to accompany an already impressive menu and top-class entertainment. With a combination of top international acts and Aussie icons, the Airlie Beach Music Festival provides four days of non-stop musical merriment, where you can hop from venue to venue for a veritable feast of food and festivity. Relax, enjoy the view and chill to live music by the pool. For more info, visit anchorbar.com.au.

What a busy few months it has been since the last edition! We’ve just received our latest passenger statistics for July which show a total of 77,300 passengers passed through Mackay Airport. This is great news for the region and shows just how much the mining sector is recovering. There is a great buzz around the place right now and we’ve also seen an increase in travellers who are in the region to visit friends and relatives as well as a boost to the leisure sector. Many of you would have heard about Mackay’s bid for the Qantas Pilot Training Academy! As part of the bid, the team at Mackay Airport welcomed representatives from Qantas to the airport and took them through the details of our bid. We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of community support for the academy and are looking forward to hearing if the #MackayWantsYouQantas campaign proves successful. Our new Community Grant program - ‘I fly Mackay because we care’ – has also been going from strength to strength, providing much needed financial assistance to some of the hard working not-for-profit communitybased organisations in the Mackay region. Lindsay Simpson and Grant Lewis Introducing

A

fter chasing an endless summer between the Mediterranean and the Whitsundays, Lindsay Simpson and Grant Lewis have chosen to operate solely from Airlie Beach. Many locals will be familiar with their tallship from yesteryear, Providence V, which has been operating in the Whitsundays since June 2015. But what you may not have known, is Lindsay and Grant also own a 54ft French Jeanneau sailing yacht, Mi Lady, which until recently had been providing charters in the Greek islands. The couple had planned to move to the Mediterranean. However, Providence V has proven to be so popular in the Whitsundays that Lindsay and Grant changed course and plotted a new future here in Airlie Beach. That only left one minor task, getting a 54ft yacht from one side of the world to the other.

“We transported her on a large ship, a voyage that took five to six weeks from across the globe. She finally arrived in January of this year in port in Newcastle. It was quite an exercise getting her off the ship, she was craned into the water and then we sailed her to shore. After being checked and cleared by customs we sailed her up the coast to the Whitsundays. We spent the next few months getting her ready and she has been operating day sails to Whitehaven Beach only in the past few weeks,” Lindsay said. Mi Lady is a spectacular addition to Whitsunday Sailing, offering a completely different experience to her sister ship, Providence V. Providence V is a replica of the Grand Banks fishing boats that plied the waters around Newfoundland. She is unique as although her plans came from the Mystic River Museum at Seaport, Connecticut, she is built out of all North Queensland timber. Whereas, Mi Lady, is an example of French fibreglass elegance. Mi Lady provides an intimate sailing experience like no other, with three cabins all with their own ensuites, a fully-equipped galley and spacious dining and living areas. The teardrop windows allow natural light to flow into the living areas

downstairs, even providing a view of the ocean from the galley. The yacht has had a rich sailing heritage, Mi Lady came first in the Southern Ionian Regatta in 2014 The fully crewed journey allows visitors to enjoy an intimate sailing experience to Whitehaven Beach, setting foot onto the pearlescent sand after the busy day boats have departed. Visit quiet anchorages away from the crowd, enjoy water sport activities such as stand-up paddle boarding and snorkel some of the best locations in the Whitsundays. Enjoy freshly grilled seafood such as barramundi from the deck barbecue as the crew ensures you indulge in fine food and beverages. Espresso Martinis, Providence’s classic cocktail, will also be served from the fully-licensed bar. Mi Lady is initially available for daily Whitehaven charters as well as private and cabin charters for two or three nights. An introductory free sunset cruise on Providence V is offered for overnight charter guests. Visit whitsundaysailing.com.au for the complete picture on how a journey with Mi Lady can provide the ultimate intimate Whitsunday sailing experience.

Growing up with good food is like a birthright in Malaysia; incredible street food can be found around every corner, creating places for friends and family to congregate. Ingredients are flavourful and memorable. Heng Kean Yong (you can call him Yong) grew up in the state of Selangor in Malaysia. His mother is a cook so he grew up experiencing the wealth of great flavours which Malaysia is famous for. This is where his passion for food arose. He came to Australia in 2015 and moved to Sydney, but soon

relocated to Mackay when he had the opportunity to work at Tropical Phoenix Restaurant. His brother had previously worked there and recommended both the restaurant and Mackay as a wonderful place to be. “Mackay is a very nice place, friendly people and the weather is great. I like to visit Airlie Beach on weekends,” he said. In Malaysia, Yong was fond of badminton. He used to play every day but hasn’t yet taken up the sport since moving to Australia. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DISH AT TROPICAL PHOENIX? “I enjoy the satay chicken. The sauce is very nice. Our chicken is fresh, we get our chickens locally so that’s why it tastes so good. Our chicken skewers are made by the chef and are very popular for being so tender.” WHY DO YOU THINK TROPICAL PHOENIX IS SO POPULAR IN MACKAY? “We have a very good chef, so the taste is authentic. It reminds me of home. Our ingredients are very good quality, our duck is local, we get our beef from the Whitsundays and our seafood is very good quality. Especially the calamari, that’s why the dishes are so popular. Our vegetables are very fresh too, many people comment on how fresh and crispy they are. Everything is cooked to order and it just tastes very good, I think that’s why people love coming here.” WHERE HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT ON HOLIDAY? “I enjoyed visiting Thailand, the food is very good and the shopping is very good too.”
