Editor Sometimes in life, you get thrown a curveball. Sometimes you get thrown a series of curveballs. One after another. I heard these words at an inspiring gala dinner last month which was supporting the TUF MINDS Suicide awareness app, created by local philanthropists Eli and John McIntosh.

20-28

The talk was from a guest speaker who told a story that broke my heart. His family had lost not one, but three of their children in different ways, the most recent was from suicide. Witnessing the raw courage it took for this man to share his story, just three years after he lost his son, made the entire room fall silent with respect. Tears glistening at the edge of our eyes. This humble, ‘regular’ man and his family had survived the unimaginable and were somehow still managing to smile, still trying to inspire and give hope to others despite their tragedies. This, in my opinion, is true strength. Witnessing this incredible moment left me wondering if I would have what it takes to be as strong in the same situation. How would I behave if the worst happened? Would I crumble? Would I let my grief swallow me whole? Or would I find the inner-strength to (eventually) creep out of my hole and not only start living again but start giving back to others; I hope so. The subject of ‘Strength’ is discussed at length in this issue and can be seen in the resilience and determination shown in the success of many local businesses who share their stories with us.

Describe your personality in three words: Extroverted Introvert, Infectious, Adventurous Coming from a small coastal town called Narooma in NSW, never stopped Dean from having a big world picture and an innate adventurous spirit. Some of his favourite moments have been while travelling; flying down the world’s highest and longest zip-line over water in Haiti, exploring the Caribbean onboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships and discovering the history of Stonehenge. It is this adventurous spirit that led Dean to start a new career and lifestyle opportunity on one of the world’s most sought-after island holiday destinations, Hamilton Island. Moving swiftly up the ranks and recognised for his hard-work and dedication, Dean moved from VIP island concierge to Resort Duty Manager for qualia and finally, his current position, Regional Sales Executive. Dean has been living on Hamilton Island for three years now and in his spare time he loves exploring the hiking trails or finding an opportunity to get on a boat and journey to the nearby islands.

Describe your personality in three words: Kind, generous and witty Spending six months of the year in the UK and six months of the year in the Whitsundays sounds like a dream way to spend your retirement. For Jan, this has become a regular ‘routine’ as she shares her time with her adult children and enjoys two extremely different lifestyles. In the UK she spends time with her two sons and grand-daughter. She is an active member of the local church and helps elderly people at the retirement home nearby. Here in the Whitsundays she lives with her daughter (Rachael, our Editor) and her grandson. She is also the proof-reader for Core Life Magazine and has started a book club which is held at the Rainbow Bakery on the third Thursday of every month. A retired sports-teacher, Jan has always led an active life which she continues to love, going to Pilates, body balance or combat classes almost every day of the week. She is also an avid football (soccer) fan and has attended almost every one of her son’s matches for the last thirty years! Jan is a passionate skier and loves the French and Italian Alps. So much so that at 55 she took early retirement and spent five ski seasons working as Head Housekeeper at a hotel in the Aosta Valley. These days, she loves spending time with her grandchildren, her grown-up children and their partners. They share ski holidays, trips to watch Southampton Football Club (English Premier League) and many other adventures still to come. A good life!

rom August 1-4, you can be a part of something great – the Great Barrier Reef Festival, proudly supported by Cruise Whitsundays. The festival is now in its 19th year, but 2019 marks the first under a new name and brand identity. In essence, the festival is a celebration of what it means to live in and visit the region at the physical and spiritual heart of the reef. For chairwoman Margie Murphy it is also about connecting the reef to the shore and the people for whom it has special significance. “Having the Great Barrier Reef and 74 Whitsunday islands on our doorstep is what sets us apart from any other destination on earth, as well as our vibrant towns and particularly the tourist hub of Airlie Beach,” she says. This year’s festival comprises a mix of new and tried-and-tested events. New for 2019 is an arts element funded by a Regional Arts Development Fund grant. Through workshops hosted by Lure in the Coral Sea Marina | Resort, renowned upcycling artist, David Day, is teaching participants to create colourful fish from plastic waste that would otherwise become landfill or marine debris.

www.corelife.com.au 14 14 www.corelife.com.au

The resulting school of fish will form a community art installation on the Airlie Beach foreshore. Lure is also hosting new reef education workshops. Meanwhile one of the festival’s established events is headed for a makeover. On Thursday, August 1, the Fish D’Vine Comedy Gala will be held at Airlie’s favourite seafood restaurant and Rum Bar for the first time. MC’d by Fish D’Vine’s own comedian, Matt Isabella, and featuring renowned stand-up comics Gary Eck and Greg Sullivan, organisers are promising the best Comedy Gala yet. Tickets to this Reef Festival fundraiser cost $65, including a drink on arrival and meal of quality fish and chips. Festivities for Friday, August 2, have been given a boost by a partnership with the Whitsunday Coast Airport and the inclusion of a lantern parade from the Coral Sea Marina | Resort, to the Airlie Beach foreshore. Here everyone will enjoy night markets, carnival rides, the Whitsunday Food Service Eat Street, and Mama Africa pop-up bar, ahead of the official festival opening and signature event,

the Whitsunday Coast Airport Fireworks on the Foreshore. Beats on the Beach will follow, with a line-up that’s nothing short of ‘Electrik’. On Friday, August 2, rising star Thandi Phoenix, and return guest, Timomatic, will headline on the Beach Music foreshore stage, alongside MC’s Sam and Rach from Hit FM. Festival favourites Electrik Lemonade will get the party started on Saturday, August 3, and close the festival on Sunday, August 4, at Chill in the Park. Saturday, August 3, will once again be about classic cars and vintage clothing at the Fraser Ford Revvin the Reef and Miss Pin-up Parade; followed by the ever-popular Wilmar Sugar Wearable Art Awards, not-to-be-missed Rotary Street Parade, and Magic Mile running race. The theme of this year’s street parade is ‘The Living Reef – A World Down Under’. Sunday, August 4, is dedicated to the Family Fun Day and Reef Gateway Hotel Recyclable Regatta, with lots of fun, games and free entertainment on Airlie’s newly revitalised foreshore. All information, registrations and sales for ticketed events can be found on the brand new website www.greatbarrierreeffestival.com.au.

each activities, local markets, live music and playground thrills, the Airlie Beach Foreshore Revitalisation is now a buzz of activity after the $6.3 million redevelopment was officially opened by Mayor Andrew Willcox last month. The revitalised foreshore boasts a beach step stadium, a sound stage for events, a new tourist bus drop-off area, a refurbished amenities block, a massive 10.5m high new shaded playground, an improved market stall area with extra lighting, 57 new sealed carparks plus extensive new landscaping and seating. Mayor Andrew Willcox said the redevelopment showcases the Airlie Beach foreshore as a community hub for families and tourists. “The revitalisation has breathed new life into the foreshore with a focus being on the unique seaside location. “Connectivity along the foreshore has been improved with a three-metre wide pedestrian path along the beach,” he said. “This a will add to the already popular Bicentennial Walkway by linking Airlie Beach Lagoon area further along the foreshore to the Whitsunday Sailing Club.

“This means that families and visitors can virtually walk, jog or ride along the Coral Sea all the way from Cannonvale Beach to Airlie Beach,” Mayor Willcox said. A major part of the project was upgrading and improving the existing major underground services. Ergon Energy approached Council to undertake urgent works to the lines supplying power to the Whitsunday islands and Jubilee Pocket area which had deteriorated and required upgrading. The active sewer rising main located in the foreshore was also upgraded during the earthworks as the current one is far undersized to cope with future growth of the area. An elated Mayor Willcox said he couldn’t be prouder of this new community hub which will showcase what our beautiful Whitsunday Region has to offer. $4.8 million of this project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program.

Features of the project include: • 57 extra sealed carparks, • 120 market stall sites, • New 10.5m high playground, • Sound stage, • I mproved amenities block with green wall and ventilation, •N ew landscaped gardens and turf, •A dditional trees, palms and shrubs • 3m wide pedestrian path, •N ew and easy to read way finding signs throughout, and •N ew shaded umbrellas throughout.

Eligible works will be funded under the Commonwealth and State Government Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

“I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG. “My advice to others; you know your body better than anyone. Get a second, third or fourth opinion if you need to.” One minute, you’re living a carefree and active life. The next, you’re living the majority of it in hospital. This story is all too common with an increasing number of people being diagnosed with cancer every day. But it’s not necessarily a death sentence. In Nathan Fleming’s case, his cancer was rare and aggressive. But, with hundreds of people wishing him well, proactive doctors who sought the best solutions and Nate’s own positivity, cancer can be beaten. February, 2018. Nathan (Nate) fractured his left foot, trying to re-live a part of his youth on a skateboard after a few beers. He lugged a moonboot around for eight weeks, but a more serious problem was forming. “I started to feel really tired and I had pain in my right thigh. I had also noticed that my energy levels had changed. I struggled to get up in the morning and I was always tired. I was taking up to one packet of Ibuprofen a day to try to stop the pain,” he remembers. He visited his GP on the Gold Coast, who first recommended a massage as she thought it was a knot in his muscle. The second time Nate went back, she suggested he had pinched a nerve in his back and referred him to physio. When he went back a third time, still in severe pain, the GP said he should rest as he was working too hard. www.corelife.com.au 16 16 www.corelife.com.au

It wasn’t until Nate visited Scott Evans at Physio Plus about an arm dislocation, where he mentioned the pain in his thigh. Scott referred him to Whitsunday Family Practice where a proper investigation began. Initially, Nate was diagnosed with a children’s cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. He was flown to Brisbane for a bone biopsy and had to wait two weeks for the results. “I remember the day that I was diagnosed like it was yesterday. “I was living with the owners of True Blue Sailing on the Gold Coast, Tony and Deb Brown, because I couldn’t look after myself. Deb took me into Princess Alexandra Hospital on a Friday afternoon. The doctor told me I had a rare cancer called Osteosarcoma. I only had four days to process the diagnosis. Because it is a very aggressive cancer, they had to act fast,” Nate said. Nate’s Trek, as his friends named his journey, started with 10 intensive months of chemotherapy. “I was on a very high dosage of chemo, Cisplatin, Doxorubicin and Methotrexate. I had a portacath inserted which attached under the skin of my chest, a direct line to my main vein where they could take blood and put the chemo into my body. This avoided damaging the veins in my arm. “The feeling is unlike anything else. You watch it drip into your body and you can actually feel it go through you. I explain it like when the

COMMUNITYLIFE Incredible Hulk goes from a human into a green monster. “I cried every time. The feeling is horrible. But, it needed to happen for me to have this chance at life.” As well as chemotherapy, Nate underwent surgery to remove his right femur. New technology from Germany meant that Nate was the first in Australia to receive a type of custom-made, titanium rod which replaced his femur. He had the operation in November and was up walking within four days. They did remove an inner-quad muscle which means he has difficulty climbing stairs. Two large screws bolt the titanium rod into his hip and knee, so he is still in recovery mode as his body learns to adapt. One of Nate’s biggest support crews came from here in the Whitsundays, his friends and workmates from Ocean Rafting. While Nate was in Brisbane, Ocean Rafting organised A Night for Nate fundraiser at Boaty's Bar in Airlie Beach to raise money for his treatment. More than 200 people showed their support with Nate watching from hospital on Facebook via a live feed. Last month, Nate started back at Ocean Rafting again and is grateful for the support he received from his Whitsunday colleagues. “It been great to have normality back in

my life after the year I have had. Waking up and getting ready for work, hanging with the team and promoting the regions that I love; Whitsundays and Cape Tribulation, it doesn’t get any better. “The Whitsunday locals have been overwhelmingly amazing since I have been back with loads of hugs, kisses and thoughtful wishes. I can’t thank Jan and Peter Claxton (owners of Ocean Rafting) enough as they were by my side throughout this whole ordeal, even holding my job for me,” Nate said. Unfortunately for Nate, Osteosarcoma has a tendency to attack the lungs, placing him at a high risk for lung cancer. Six weeks after his last session of chemotherapy, Nate had follow-up scans. He will need regular follow-ups every three months, but Nate was ecstatic to proclaim that he’s been given the all-clear! “As you can imagine, I’m over the moon. I couldn’t be happier.” “I received so much support from all over the world; messages, calls and even Uber Eats deliveries! Unfortunately, you do fall into a dark place with chemo sometimes. But so many people kept me positive and sat by my side, right to the end. I’m forever grateful for people and positivity. Together, we beat this.”

a beautiful

heart

with Serenity Charles

Royal blood or not, some girls are born to be a princess. But in this modern age, being a princess involves much more than pretty dresses and graceful waves. It takes a big heart and hard work to become someone who can help change the lives of others. From the age of three, Serenity Charles wanted to be a princess. She dressed in pretty dresses, wore heels, played with makeup and dreamed of becoming the next best thing, a beauty queen. Last year, she asked her mother, Jennifer, if she could compete in her first beauty pageant. Not only did Serenity light up the runway with her sparkle, she won her category at the Miss Harbour Gladstone Festival. She then took the crown in her age category at the Miss Glamourgenics Pageant in Brisbane, giving her vibrant personality a major boost in self-confidence. She took her love of pageantry one step further in April, as the only girl of Filipino heritage to compete in Miss Diamond Australia. Not only was this a big step-up for Serenity, but it gave her the chance to raise funds for a charity very close to the hearts of her family. Serenity said, “Heartkids Foundation helped to

save my brother’s life. I wanted to make sure that other families receive the same support to keep them together for longer.” Serenity’s brother, Sherwin, was born with congenital heart disease. He was only given four years to live, but thanks to support through Heartkids, Sherwin received lifesaving surgeries. “I’m fundraising to let them know how much their foundation means to me and my family,” Serenity added. Serenity was delighted to be crowned Miss Junior Diamond Australia, an achievement reflected by the hard work and dedication she put toward her training and fundraising. She will continue raising money for Heartkids and hopes to use her future aspirations as a beauty queen to help others who need the most support in life. “I hope to become a role model and support the local community. What I have learned from pageants is that it’s not all about external beauty, but inner beauty that everyone has. Having a big heart and being compassionate is what makes people the most beautiful,” Serenity said.

Her family moved from Gladstone to Mackay earlier this year, and Serenity attends Eimeo State School in Year 6. She is part of Brooke Lee Modelling and enjoys singing and dancing. What advice do you have for other girls who want to try beauty pageants but might be shy? “Don’t be scared to show who you are, be confident, be strong, and just follow your dreams. THERE IS A HUGE VARIETY OF MEAT AND SEAFOOD AT MBW!

NOT JUST YOUR ORDINARY BUTCHER!

Karen and Don Rix

What’s the secret to an

award-winning snag? According to Karen and Don Rix, owners of our local Master Butchers stores, the secret comes down to sales; listening to what customers like and building on the success of what sells. “The truth is always in the sales. We all have different tastes, so we take on board the feedback and develop the products from results. Using quality ingredients is the key to sensational snags too, of course,” Karen said. The couple should know. In the recent regional Sausage King awards held at the Townsville Yacht Club, Master Butchers Whitsunday and MBW on the Barbie took out a slew of awards, including 12 gold from 14 categories. The awards cover a range of sausage flavours as well as burgers, ham, bacon and kabanas. Of all the awards won, Don is most proud of the beef sausage gold award.

“Generally, the beef snag is the most sought after by the butchers as it’s seen as the traditional butcher’s snag,” he said. 12 gold awards mean between the MBW on the Barbie and the Master Butchers Whitsunday stores, they can enter 12 categories at the Queensland state titles, held in conjunction with the ECCA in Brisbane. The couple are hoping for more success there to be eligible for the national Sausage King competition; to add more national gold to their wins in previous years. Don commented, “The last time we won the Continental with our Casalinga, we went on to get a national win. And it was terrific for the business!” This year, they are hoping to get a win for MBW on the Barbie.

MACCA’S FUELING OUR MORANBAH MINERS AN APPETITE NEEDS OPPORTUNITY. Whitsunday Region McDonald’s Franchise owners, Michael and Jane Muller, have shown that for those with a hunger for success, a career in McDonald’s can lead to great opportunity. The couple opened their first McDonald’s franchise more than 20 years ago in Airlie Beach, and in later years opened the Bowen restaurant in 2009 and Cannonvale in 2010. This year, they have expanded into the Bowen Basin and take over the ownership of the Moranbah restaurant this month. But it isn’t their own success they are celebrating, but the achievement of long-term employees, Russ Smith and Courtney Leifels, who have become equity partners with Mike and Jane. Mike shares how Russ and Courtney developed their management careers through nationallyrecognised courses, with McDonald’s providing a path for career progression. “Russ started working for us shortly after we opened McDonald’s Airlie Beach back in 1998. He completed all McDonald’s management courses and was promoted to Restaurant Manager of the Airlie Beach store in 2005. When we opened the Bowen restaurant, Russ was promoted to Operations Supervisor of both Bowen and Airlie

Beach and later Cannonvale when it opened one year later. “Courtney arrived here when her parents moved from the Sunshine Coast back in 2005. She has been our second-in-charge after Russ for the past few years and has moved around managing all of our stores. She will now be promoted into the role of Operations Supervisor of the three Whitsunday stores when Russ moves to Moranbah.” Purchasing the Moranbah McDonald’s has enabled Mike and Jane to increase the equity for Russ, to enable him to take more ownership in the performance of the restaurant. This is to give him the opportunity to become a Licensee of his own McDonald’s restaurant in the future. Mike said, “My vision is to one day be able to sell the restaurant to Russ as a reward for the dedication and commitment he has made to us over the years.” Meet your Macca’s Moranbah Manager RUSS SMITH After working in the Whitsundays for more than 20 years, Russ Smith is looking forward to a move to the Bowen Basin to experience the ruggedness of life inland.

“Moranbah will be my new home and main store of operation. We have great teams in our other three restaurants who will keep our business moving forward. I won’t be as heavily involved in the Whitsunday restaurants, but will still be involved with best practice sharing and making sure we are achieving our business goals across the organisation as a whole,” he said. Russ is looking forward to meeting the Moranbah community and working toward making Macca’s a destination of choice for visitors, locals and families. “I’m looking forward to working with the Moranbah team and welcoming new members. We want to create career pathways for our staff and the community in a fast, friendly and fun environment. We really want to exceed the Moranbah community’s expectation.” What's your favourite thing to order from the menu at the moment? “With the renewed focus on meat quality through our ‘best burger’ campaign, I can’t go past the classic Quarter Pounder.”

Mackay District Freemasons Supporting Your Community

“Traditionally there has been a perceived veil of mystery and secrecy around Freemasons and misguided misconceptions of the Fraternity and its undertakings. “With this backdrop, we would look to demystify the society, clarify what it is about and continue to support the jokes, all of which Masons are more than willing to discuss and to accept with a laugh, (which is in itself, is an example of the nature of the friendly society and the men in it).” Are you keen to contribute more, do more and care more, through self-improvement? These qualities are part of the foundation which makes the global network of Freemasonry such a strong one. With a strong tradition of selfimprovement, Freemasonry is less about secrecy and more about service that you may realise. www.corelife.com.au 22 22 www.corelife.com.au

At its heart, the organisation is all about making ‘Good Men, Better.’ Brother David Sykes, Star of the North Lodge No. 401, shares an insight into the Mackay District Freemasons and how the secular organisation is helping its members to make a real difference to our local communities. “There are secrets, but it is not a secret society. In our organisation everyone is regarded as equal and Freemasons are friendly, welcoming and always looking to assist individuals and the community,” David said. The Fraternity is full of industry leaders, professionals and mentors. This is one of the major advantages of becoming a Freemason. David commented, “Freemasonry is, in essence, continual mentorship and is delivered by

individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, who are successful in many areas of life. We do this through a metaphor of Building and how when you build you improve as you go through life. The networks established outside of Lodge can also lead into great mentoring opportunities.” The major charity organisation created by the Queensland Freemasons is Heart, Hand Pocket. Already this charity donates millions each year throughout Queensland, with a focus on rural and regional communities, and this year they have become the naming sponsor of one of Mackay’s largest fundraising events, the River 2 Reef Ride charity event. “On behalf of the Mackay District Freemasons, I would like to say how proud we are that Hand Heart Pocket will be the Naming Rights Sponsor of such a significant, community charity event for the next three years.

BUSINESSLIFE “In addition to being naming right sponsors, Hand Heart Pocket have also agreed to match the first $50,000 raised through the event, dollar-for-dollar, each year during the sponsorship period. This means that the more participants there are, the more funds that will be raised for RACQ CQ Rescue, Mackay and District Sporting Wheelies Participants and a third local charity which is to be chosen by Hand Heart Pocket the Charity of Freemasons Queensland on the 25th of July. “We are also excited about entering a team in the event,” David mentioned. Mackay District Freemasons will be holding a number of community events this year, including a Community Charity Gala to further assist them in helping the local community. The aim is to encourage more people to become Freemasons while hosting a fun event for locals to attend. How do you become a Freemason? Initially, you should talk with a Freemason to find out more about it. However, if you don’t know a Freemason, it’s as easy as starting a conversation online via the Mackay District Freemason website. To be considered, one must be an honest, law-abiding man of good character. You can contact the local Lodge at mackaydistrictfreemasons.com.au and follow the ‘I want to become a Freemason’ link. Making Good Men Better. Freemasonry isn’t about making you better than everyone else, it’s about making a better you. The Mackay District Freemasons are made up of many local members who are successful in various areas of life; including local industry, small business and larger organisations such as, sugar, coal, infrastructure as well as the professional sectors. “When a Lodge’s doors are closed, we all meet as equal men, regardless of anything on the outside world.” A global network of inspirational leaders Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is a member of a navy lodge. Others who have declared their membership include the Rev Jesse Jackson and the former astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. One look at prominent Australians who are, or were Freemasons, reveals a veritable who’s who list of politicians, sportsmen and other prominent achievers. The list includes Sir Edmund Barton: First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies: Former Prime Minister, Bill Lawry: Cricketer and commentator, Fred Walker: Inventor of Vegemite, Sir

Charles Kingsford Smith: Aviator, Sir Donald Bradman: Cricketer, James Boag: Brewer, Captain Matthew Flinders: Explorer, Sir James Hardy: Olympian and winemaker; just to name a few. Mackay District Freemasons warmly welcomes adult men of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. We strive through Brotherhood to encourage the next generation of Freemasons who will help take the organisation, its valuable traditions and charity into the future. The Mackay District Freemasons are made up of community leaders, prominent businesspeople and every-day men who strive to become better versions of themselves. We get to know Brother David Sykes, Star of the North Lodge No. 401, to find out more about his membership as a Freemason. David joined the Freemasons in 2015 and shares some of his most memorable moments. “The most memorable experience was the initiation into freemasonry as an Entered Apprentice, this is the first degree of three and the entry point into freemasonry. There is an immense feeling of achievement when you learn and present a charge (portion of ritual) at Lodge meetings.” For many years, David had a fascination with the mystery and history of the fraternity. It was after a friend shared his excitement of joining the Masonry that prompted David to apply. Outside of the Freemasons, David is a 40+ year veteran of the mining industry, starting his career in the UK before relocating to Australia in the mid 90’s. “I started way back in 1978 and have spent 22 years of this time in Australia, most of this has been with major mining companies but the last six years have been with Mastermyne looking after operations, then more recently strategy and growth.” Over the years David has performed various roles with Mastermyne including Executive GM Mining, Executive GM Strategy and Growth and is often appointed as the acting CEO. He enjoys mountain bike riding and recently became hooked on long course triathlon training, or Ironman events. He was part of an Australian team in the World Championship Ironman event in Kona, Hawaii. “I also enjoy Masonry and the personal growth it brings. I have tremendous home support for this from my partner, Vivienne.”

WHEN THE SHARKS ARE CIRCLING, HOW EXPOSED ARE YOUR ASSETS? You’ve been in business with your good friend and close ally Mark for almost a decade, building a strong business together. You’ve survived the GFC, massive competition, and a couple of bad business decisions you’d rather forget. But you’ve made it through, stronger than ever. Along with your house, it’s one of your most valuable assets, and it’s what keeps the food on the table for both families. You get a call from Mark’s spouse, Angie, distraught. Mark’s dead. Heart attack. The funeral is desperately sad, as are the days and weeks after. You busy yourself finding a couple of employees to wear Mark’s many hats. They’re not the perfect fit, but it’s just to keep the wheels rolling. Weeks pass, and things inevitably tighten up. Mark’s business acumen, salesmanship, and friendship are all sorely missed. You’re off your game too. If this isn’t enough, Angie returns from a short break to grieve with family in Sydney, and leaves a message wanting to catch up to ‘talk about the direction of the business, and cover off finances.’ She’s got a plan, she says. You can’t believe it. She’s barely set foot in the place since you kicked off! She PD LAW BUSINESS TEAM even admitted as much at the funeral. But, she owns half, and she wants a say. AND AN INCOME. Now you’ve got to explain how the business works, why it’s in a hole, and why you’d prefer her to stay away and let you get on with it. Without being offensive. And without inviting a costly fight. Do you buy Angie out? Do you watch the business drown because you can’t work together? Either way, it’s a mess. This could have been avoided. Not the pain of loss, but the aggravation of dealing with a potentially hostile business partner, if you plan.

Lucas Hickey and Hayden Grimston work in PD Law’s business and succession planning team. They’ve seen first-hand what happens when people adopt the ‘won’t happen to me’ approach. ‘It’s a train wreck” said Lucas Hickey. “Yes a Will is a great start but it won’t cover everything. We can make sure the pieces fall in the right places, settle on a process to work out values, transfer interests and set up insurances so it’s affordable. There are literally so many things that happen in business that are just beyond our control, but this does not have to be one of them. We can really manage this risk well. ”

Despite potentially one of the biggest assets we can accumulate, people often overlook the importance of preserving its value in their overall estate planning. Give PD Law’s business team a call to walk you through your options so you can decide what sort of value and security this represents for Both your family and your remaining business partners will be looking for you, your business and your family. guidance and certainty, not headaches and cost.

Would you like to work 4 days a week and get paid for 5? A lot of larger companies in the USA have introduced this policy into the workplace. How it works is, days off are rotated, not everyone can have Friday off. The productivity has to remain the same or the same results have to be achieved as in a five day working week. The employees do not have to work longer hours on their 4 days, just smarter and more efficiently. The results were greater than expected, sick days dropped off, employee satisfaction went up, productivity increased and staff retention improved. A firm in Melbourne has done a similar thing except they close the office on Wednesday or the hump day as they call it and employees are expected to work longer hours on the other days to ensure customers are not affected.

Saturday & Sunday - Closed

We introduced this into our office and we found that apart from the benefits, we definitely were more focused on our working days and spent less time chatting over coffee because the incentive was so powerful.

For a consultation call

There were rules to the policy, if there was a public holiday in a week no extra day off, no tacking annual leave on to your day off and if you were sick no extra day off, but everyone was still very happy with the scheme.

gillian@synergypas.com.au

Currently the policy is on hold because we have a backlog of work due to our moving offices and the additional work that it entailed, but we intend to reintroduce it as soon as we catch up.

However, I am greatly confident in the future of the region and I have a sincere and deep interest and investment in the ongoing development of the Airlie Beach community. “My vision is to create a premium destination marina resort on the Whitsundays coast, and to promote our incredible region as a must-see global destination. Coral Sea Resort is an excellent asset, in arguably one of the best locations in Queensland, and we are looking forward to this acquisition being the next step towards achieving this goal. “I would like to personally invite the local community, in addition to our guests, to enjoy and celebrate this next mile-stone in the marina’s already fascinating history.”

Her role in leading this large integrated team is to guide them toward achieving a vision of creating a world-class mainland destination resort. Part of that vision includes becoming a local employer of choice, serving as an advocate for the Whitsundays region and the natural assets surrounding the area. While this vision is big for the future of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, Kate believes she has the team for the job. “The team at Coral Sea Marina Resort is one of the strongest I have encountered. Every day presents new opportunities and challenges, but they manage it all with a smile and the utmost professionalism. LUSH PARKLANDS COMING SOON - THE GARDENS

REJUVENATING THE RESORT

2.5 hectares of lush parklands will provide an intimate space for wedding ceremonies, open spaces for concerts and festivals, art sculptures and expansive gardens of native plants which can provide a pleasant space to be enjoyed by all guests, visitors and locals alike. With The Gardens at one end of the marina resort village and the hotel at the other, the entire precinct will offer a stunning waterfront leisure space for visitors to the Whitsundays, guests of the marina resort and the local community. The redevelopment of this area is currently under construction and should progress quickly over the coming drier months.

Toward the end of this year will see the first stage of renovations and rejuvenation to the hotel at the Coral Sea Marina Resort. This will include the refurbishment of the resort arrival plaza and reception area, pool and restaurant area as well as some cosmetic room upgrades throughout the hotel. The hotel will be closed for five weeks in November for the upgrades to be completed.

The Gardens will add another dimension to what already is a first-class mainland destination in the Whitsundays.

Otherwise, business will continue as normal as Coral Sea Marina Resort welcomes visitors to stay, play and explore; providing the perfect base for a Whitsunday adventure.

Building a vision

When you look at Coral Sea Marina|Resort (Formerly Abell Point Marina), you see a world-class marina. It’s hard to imagine that only seven short years ago, the place was in the hands of receivers and was virtually becoming derelict. When Paul Darouzet purchased Abell Point Marina just over six years ago, he had a grand vision; to make the marina a destination of choice for boaties across the world. But to turn a vision into a reality, you need someone with the know-how to make it happen. This is where the partnership between Paul and John Warren from Warren Transport began. John was already working on the Abell Point Marina site before Paul purchased it from the receivers. After hearing Paul’s plans for the marina, John knew it was a legacy project he wanted to be a part of. Many an evening ensued with Paul, John and Peter the builder; talking through how they could turn vision into reality. Warren Transport has been the prime Earthworks Contractor for the Abell Point Marina site during all its recent rejuvenation over the past seven years. It provided all the big toys to get the heavy lifting done; from excavators to dredge the seabed to dump trucks, diggers and more to complete the earthworks component. Walkways, car parks and capping the mud pond to transform it into a community grassland park; Warren Transport has been at the heart of it all. The ingenuity even came down to John building the dredge pump line in his shed, with Paul importing pumps and accessories from all over the world to get the job done. Both men are perfectionists in what they do, so naturally they would bounce ideas off one another to brainstorm what could be achieved in a timely fashion. John commented, “It’s been our absolute pleasure to work with Paul throughout the years, to work with such a visionary has been a highlight for Warren Transport. To be involved with the construction of this amazing destination for the community is a legacy we are proud to have been a part of.”

BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM CORAL SEA MARINA RESORT With Red Cat Adventures

W

hen the owners of Red Cat Adventures first met in 2005, Julie was a British Backpacker and Asher was an Aussie Skipper. Back then they could only dream of where their adventures would take them. Then, in 2011, they bought their first charter boat together, a boat named Tongarra operating out of Abell Point Marina, now Coral Sea Marina Resort. With hard work and dedication they transformed this small charter boat business into one of the Whitsunday’s most popular tours. Flash forward 8 years and the couple have three children, boys Kai (6) Brody (4) and Tyde (1) plus a rapidly expanding business which employs 28 amazing employees and has just taken home

a National Tourism Award, receiving Gold for ’Major Tour and transport Operator’. The couple’s portfolio now boasts four charter boats, three which are designed to Ashers specifications and custom-built. They also have seven different tourism products including special event venue, Paradise Cove. Throughout their journey to success they’ve been proud to operate out of a continually evolving and modernising marina, especially in recent years under the ownership of Paul Darrouzet. “The marina has received an incredible upgrade and has become a well-respected destination. We are extremely proud to be operating Red Cat Adventures from this location and showing off the

fantastic facilities to our customers,” said Julie. Working in partnership with other operators is important to Red Cat Adventures and they are proud to operate alongside Prosail plus Whitsunday Jet Ski Tours and Air Whitsunday to offer excellent package deals. Now with four Gold regional awards, 2 Gold State Awards and more recently, the Climate Action Leader (the only business with this certification in the Whitsundays) and the Australian Enterprise Awards for ‘Most innovative charter boat company’, the world really does seem limitless. It’s been a big year for the Red Cats!

TOUGH STRONG POWERFUL The man the mindset the machine

He’s got that salt of the earth, strong-minded mentality that can’t be faked and is hard to find – you either have it, or you don’t. Steve Galea knows his business success is a result of buckling down when the times are tough, planning for the future, and employing a good team. Of course, top of the line equipment doesn’t hurt either.

“THAT’LL DO” SIMPLY

ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH The strength needed to get the job done – without cutting any corners, is what sets Steve apart in a market not necessarily lacking in alternatives. As the only Hyundai Forklifts dealership in the Mackay region, Steve Galea of Sirus Mining saw an opportunity and went for it. Once you know the backstory, you’ll understand why.

www.corelife.com.au 46 46 www.corelife.com.au

Y

“People think forklifts just lift heavy stuff… It’s so much more than that. The safety and ergonomic features alone on Hyundai models are the best out there, in my opinion”, says Steve, who knows only too well the frustrations of not having good quality equipment in his business.

With guns blazing, Steve started Sirus Mining in 2011 to service the underground mining equipment industry. He notes that it was just after the QME (Queensland Mining Exhibition) in 2012, that things started to head south. The downturn had reared its head –hard and fast.

Having established Sirus Mining eight years ago, Steve had been thinking about ways to expand his current service offerings for quite some time. It was only off the back of a negative experience in 2017 - when he needed to hire a forklift that arrived in poor condition, with terrible service capabilities, that he decided enough was enough. “So, I contacted Hyundai and we became part of their dealer network. Fast forward 12 months and we took out the ‘Best Emerging Dealer’ award at their 2018 National Awards”, he fondly comments.

Looking back now, Steve recounts how hard it was to make decisions that would affect his staff. “We hung in there, but it was no walk in the park”. A true testament to his character however, is that some of his staff have been with him right from the beginning, and at his side through all the tough times. Scott Reid, current Workshop Co-ordinator, has known Steve since 2004 when they started out at Boart Longyear together. “Steve has always been straight down the line – there’s no in between. I’m the boss when he’s not there”, Scott says, with a cheeky glimmer in his eye.

“No joke, this forklift we hired arrived with wires hanging out. To top it off, it took about four days for someone to come and fix it! I thought to myself, if all I have to do is be better than this then what am I waiting for?”.

Clearly, Steve trusts his employees. Not only are they likeminded, honest workers with all the necessary qualifications, they genuinely care about the business. “We’ve even had school-based apprentices come back to work on their holidays because they enjoyed it so much”, said Scott.

Steve felt that the price of forklift hire in the Mackay region was greatly overpriced for the current market, and believed that Hyundai was offering a better quality model than the other brands in this space. With Sirus Mining expanding at a steady rate, and his terrible experience as a customer simply needing to hire one, the need to incorporate forklifts into their business was a no brainer. Becoming one of the leading dealerships in North Queensland was just one step up, and he hasn’t looked back. This unique scenario has given Sirus Mining and Hyundai Forklifts Mackay a real competitive edge in the market. “I know what customers want when it comes to hiring a good machine that will not only last, but is safe for operating”, said Steve. “I honestly can’t rate Hyundai enough when it comes to our forklift fleet”. Steve’s hard-working ethic was instilled in him from a young age. His grandparents, Manuel and Teresa, opened City Motors Mackay in 1959, with his father, John, and uncles Peter and Rex taking over the helms until it was purchased in 2002 by Auto Corner. Naturally, Steve was put to work in his schooling years, fast learning the skills behind motor mechanics before going on to a trade as a diesel fitter.

As a third generation Mackay family, Steve tries to support the town he grew up in through his business. “Locals first, first and foremost”, he says. “I’m here to support our region, and I would hope that they support me too”. Sitting with Steve, it becomes evident that he doesn’t rush into decisions; he’s thoughtful, careful and meticulous. Once committed however, don’t get in the way because this is one unstoppable bull.

“The old man got me out of bed the day after schoolies and made me go to work. I was a bit dusty, as you can imagine”, he chuckles. Since his first day in the service department of City Motors Mackay, Steve learnt the hard way that sometimes in life, you need to harness that inner strength. To not only get up and get the job done, but to be able to sit back and say, “I did the best I could possibly do”. www.corelife.com.au 47

THE PLACES YOU’LL GO…

Cory Walker MIRAGE WHITSUNDAYS

FAST 4 FACTS Last meal choice: Roast Lamb with Kumara and gravy Favourite beverage: Gin and Tonic Favourite movie: Lords of Dogtown Favourite holiday destination: Switzerland It doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you have a clear vision for where you want to go. From the age of 15, Cory Walker already had his first taste of the hospitality industry. The Kiwi-born boy from Turangi was working in Auckland as a glassy at a bar. It inspired him to see where this path would take him, so he furthered his hospitality and management education at University. For his final year of study, he moved to Sydney and never went home. He has lived in Australia for a decade now and has 15 years of hospitality experience under his belt, half of his young lifetime. But, he says there is still much to learn. Cory recently moved to the Whitsundays to take on the role of General Manager at Mirage Whitsundays, Airlie Beach’s luxurious waterfront resort. Prior to moving interstate, Cory was the Operations Manager at Hyde Park Inn for the Returned Services League of New South Wales. His career in hospitality has given him the opportunity to meet a diverse range of celebrities both in Australia and New Zealand. Some famous faces include Boyz II Men, Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams, Sophie Monk and the New Zealand Black Caps. His favourite saying is one from Dr. Seuss; “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This highlights his passion to develop further in the industry, while spreading his wings and travelling the globe as often as possible. What has been a travel highlight for you? “I have had a couple of incredible animal encounter experiences in my travels. Most recently, my partner and I just got back from Thailand, where we got to take a couple of elephants (mother and baby) for a walk and then swim with them for a for a few hours.” What is something about you most people wouldn’t know? “I am afraid of heights, so I challenged myself to get my skydiving licence. I had never skydived before and got to do my first ever dive as a solo jump. My first solo jump was a complete rush and I don’t remember much of it, but I managed to do it.”

Meet our Conveyancing Superheroes WHITSUNDAY LAW CONGRATULATIONS YOU’RE GOING TO BUY A HOUSE!

Case Study (Yes, this happened in real life)

the sub-lease process and off-the-plan contracts make her invaluable.

It’s often the largest financial decision you will make in your lifetime, but shopping for property isn’t like choosing a new Lois Vuitton. It comes with a vast array of legal and financial decisions to be made, to ensure your dream home doesn’t become your nightmare.

Sheri Flynn from Whitsunday Law explains how their conveyancing team recently saved a purchaser from making an $800,000 oversight.

What is your hot tip when buying or selling property?

Why is conveyancing important? Picture this. You’ve found the place that makes your heart sing. You knew as soon as you saw it, this is the one. White-picket fence, a yard big enough for your future pool, a four-bay man cave to store the toys and space to grow fruit trees for your kids to pick. Your family’s own palace.

“We reviewed a contract for a client who was purchasing a multi-million dollar property. During the course of the conveyance it was discovered that a lot of mechanical equipment on the property was not functioning adequately. Thanks to the special conditions that were inserted on the recommendation of our conveyancer, a reduction in the purchase price was able to be negotiated, ultimately saving our client more than $800,000.”

It sounds too good to be true, but the price is within your budget, so you put in an offer.

MEET OUR CONVEYANCING SUPERHEROES

Your offer has been accepted! The contract has been signed, you’re ready to get past settlement and you’ve already started imagining what curtains you will hang in the living room.

Jade has had experience in a broad range of areas including Commercial, Property, Wills and Estates, Criminal and Family Law.

Unfortunately, the easement running along the back of your property means there’s no space to plant those fruit trees. The white-picket fence is outside of your legal boundary so it will need to be pulled down and re-built. The sewerage and drainage pipes run through the middle of the space you had planned to put your pool. All of a sudden, you realise that the potential you loved, is no longer possible or it will cost a fortune to remedy. Your palace now feels like a prison, restricting you from living the life you had imagined. Reality – all this could have been avoided prior to settlement with an investigation by an experienced conveyancer.

Jade Fitzgerald - Solicitor

What is your best tip to avoid potential pitfalls associated with purchasing property? “Time is of the essence. Being mindful of timeframes is crucial and failure to meet deadlines under the contract could result in severe legal and financial ramifications. When you receive your initial buyer/seller packs, ensure you read through these thoroughly so that you understand how dates under the contract operate and your rights as a buyer/seller in Queensland.” Denise Forbes - Senior Conveyancing Paralegal Denise Forbes is a highly personable and talented paralegal with a broad experience and understanding of the industry. In particular, her knowledge of

“Ensure all your special conditions are included, even if you have been told that you have pre-approval for finance. Don’t rely on conditions being included that you don’t carefully check or understand; talk to your solicitor or conveyancer BEFORE signing.” Do you have a funny story to share from your conveyancing experience? “Many years ago, a client removed all the ‘ornate plastic surrounds’ from around the light switches on the walls, (very trendy at the time). The resulting argument delayed settlement while the parties fought about it; the cost of the items was probably $20. The cost of the delay was probably $200!” Trix Kunz - Conveyancing Paralegal Trix Kunz is a paralegal focused on excelling in cottage conveyancing (buying and selling residential houses, units and vacant land). Years of experience, along with Trix’s strong passion and dedication to her work ensure that the conveyancing process is essentially smooth and coordinated ensuring that your property is protected with all your legal rights. What are your hot tips for property buyers? “Do your due diligence and wherever possible, ask your agent to provide an unsigned copy of the contract to your chosen Solicitor/Conveyancer to peruse. “From the unconditional date, have at least a two-week timeframe before settlement, as your bank has to provide your mortgage documents which then need to be returned back to the bank, which all takes time.”

THINK WATER WHITSUNDAY Meet our Store Manager David Spencer With an expansive team of knowledgeable, passionate, and dedicated people; Think Water specialises in the design and implementation of the most water efficient irrigation and water management programs available. In an area like the Whitsundays where we experience long periods of both wet and dry weather; it’s important to implement a water solution for your home or business to ensure the flow of your H2O is uninterrupted yearround. Think Water Whitsunday recently welcomed its new Store Manager, David Spencer. David brings more than 35 years’ worth of industry experience to the area, having worked in water solutions both in Australia and overseas. After 20 years in pumping and irrigation in Sydney, David lived in a part of Vietnam

where the mercury rarely dipped below 30 degrees. After three years in a hot tropical climate, his decision to move to the Whitsundays was an easy one. “There was no way I wanted to move back to the freezing winters in New South Wales after living in such a hot climate,” he commented. As Think Water’s Store Manager, David’s primary responsibility will be to offer solutions to clients, understanding their water and irrigation needs. “It’s all about making life easier for our clients. Getting to know their exact needs and how we can provide an optimal solution will be the main goal. Part of that will be ensuring we have the right stock, with the right advice and competitive prices.

I’ve worked with many different pumps and irrigation systems throughout the world and I enjoy the challenge of coming up with a solution in a difficult situation. I’m looking forward to meeting more people throughout the Whitsundays and getting to know our regular customers,” David said. In his spare time, David will be searching for the ideal piece of land with a home he can renovate. “I’m also looking forward to exploring my new home; the beaches, islands and hinterland. I also enjoy scuba diving and hope to see a lot of the Whitsundays below the surface,” he said. Give David a warm Whitsunday welcome when you see him at Think Water Whitsunday, where advice and service goes beyond irrigation.

Queta Dawson BODY CORP SERVICES WHITSUNDAY PTY LTD Local people, managing local investments. This has been the core value of Body Corp Services Whitsunday Pty Ltd, a business which has for the past 20 years taken care of the management of a diverse portfolio of strata title properties throughout the Whitsundays. What started from a humble home office, steadily grew to become the oldest locally owned Body Corporate business servicing the Whitsundays. Body Corporate Manager, Queta Dawson, says that it is the local knowledge and customer service which has brought the business much of its success. “We’re local and hands-on. We get to know the buildings in person and can be onsite immediately if a problem arises. We have a network of experienced contractors for urgent repairs and can make ourselves readily available to assist building owners. This gives our owners comfort that someone is close at hand to manage any problems in a timely manner,” she said. After several years as a property manager, Queta moved into the realm of Body Corporate management. She joined Body Corp Services Whitsunday in 2013 after working for another local Body Corporate company in a similar position for 4 years prior. Her position as manager means she handles all of the records and accounts for the buildings they manage. “Our business takes care of the administrative duties that a body corporate is required to complete; such as holding annual meetings, sending levies, managing the accounts and records to ensure the body corporate has funds available to pay for repairs and maintenance. This takes the hassle from the owners and their committee so they can focus on planning improvements or maintenance. “Our management is flexible to each individual building and the owner’s needs. If the body corporate has an active committee, we will support and assist them with their needs whilst giving them the best possible advice. The other side of this is if a body corporate has minimal interaction, we can handle the management of the property to ensure the body corporate is on track,” Queta explained. Queta was born in the Whitsundays, brought up on her family’s cane farm on the O’Connell River which has been in the family more than 100 years. When it comes to understanding locals, you don’t get much more local than that. “We grew up with the usual animals you find on a farm like cats, dogs, chickens, pigs, cows, horses, various pet birds, etc. The one unique difference was that we also had a pet crocodile. Charlene comes with a story of her own and is the reason for my love of reptiles,” Queta said. Outside of work, Queta’s main focus is on her daughter, Bianca. “She loves drawing and painting. I used to enjoy craft and making things myself, but for now, I’m happy encouraging Bianca with her interests.” Get the winning advantage for your Whitsunday strata management, with Body Corp Services Whitsunday. Did you know that Finance Brokers now do more home loans than the Banks? Yes its true! Finance brokers do approximately 59.7% of all home loans in Australia and the market share is continuing to grow.

Despite what everyone thinks the Banks do not offer the same deal. They each have different credit policies, product niches and their appetite to do business for different customer and market segments vastly differs. You may have a lifetime relationship with your bank and believe that they are your best option for a home loan simply because you have been a long-term loyal customer. WRONG! Brokers have seen this scenario play out many times with the client rejected by the bank and they then think that they don’t qualify for a home loan at all. It’s a disappointing outcome. The simple truth is that they just don’t fit that banks credit policies or are not the niche customer the bank wishes to do business with. The Finance Brokers role is to place the client with the bank that does want to do business with them and most importantly approve their credit. A good Finance Broker will look at their client’s scenario and match or qualify them to banks where they tick all boxes with credit, niches and security. The Broker will then look at the qualifying banks and offer the client a choice of their best home loans based on what the client is looking for. It might be the interest rate or loan options such as redraw or offset accounts that will suit. It’s the client that chooses the best home loan available for them from a bank that is likely to approve the loan.

Whether you’re building or renovating, owner, Danny Scott, says that it shouldn’t cost the earth to bring your cabinetry dreams to life. “We build our designs around the client’s needs and space, and then work on providing material solutions to meet their budget requirements. Often, people love the idea of a stone benchtop, two-pack painted cupboards and a glass splash back, but they don’t realize the associated cost using these kinds of materials. “For this reason, we quote on our client’s dream kitchen, but then also offer alternative material pricing, giving them the option to achieve a similar look at a reduced cost.” “We do this so that everyone has the opportunity to have award-winning, custom-designed cabinetry in their home, at a price that suits their budget,” Danny said. It’s this desire to provide quality work and exceptional service which has seen Australian Prestige Cabinet Company continue business in Mackay for just over 25 years. Danny and his wife Julie started the family-owned business in 1993 and have employed a number of local apprentices throughout the years, being dedicated to teaching the cabinetmaking trade. “I’ve watched a number of young people transition from school leavers to mature tradesmen cabinetmakers. Four years is dedicated to teaching each of them the intricate skills and craftsmanship of cabinetry. Two of our apprentices have won Apprentice of the Year Awards. Our current tradesman, David Serginson is one of those award winners, he started as a young apprentice after leaving school and has been working with us for more than 17 years,” Danny commented. Embracing the Tropics A

dd the spirit of the islands to your home by adopting elements from your favourite tropical destination. Tropic Living, formerly known as Vast Interior, is the place to shop to make those holiday vibes last longer than your vacation. Tropic Living is all about evoking the feel of a tropical paradise in your own home. We live in the tropics, so why not embrace those elements, to create not only a look you’ll love, but items designed to last in our humid climate. Owner, Kerrie Keech, explains how Tropic Living stores are stocked with our North Queensland tropical environment in mind. “We live and work in the tropics and understand the climate and issues we face compared to the southern cities. We do our own buying and always keep in mind the conditions we buy for. Not everything survives in the tropics! Which is why we have rebranded to Tropic Living; we focus on natural elements to enhance the interior’s connection with the tropical outdoors,” she said. Kerrie and her husband Phillip were formerly with Vast Interior for 17 years, starting in Brisbane. After two years in the big smoke, they relocated to Mackay where they owned and operated the Vast Interior store for 15 years. They also owned and operated a Vast Interior store in Townsville for 10 years. Both the Mackay and Townsville stores are remaining in the same location, but have both rebranded to Tropic Living. Customers are often surprised to learn that the majority of the furniture in Tropic Living has been hand-crafted specifically for that store, with some ancient pieces authentically sourced from around the world.

“We have been using Mango Timber for a number of years as it is a renewable source and stable in our climate. We also specialise in giving new life to old furniture pieces from China (up to 100 years old) which have been brought back to life for our homes today. Our Indian pieces are mostly made from parts of old buildings, hand-worked into furniture which tells a story of the past,” Kerrie commented. Not only can you source unique treasures for your home, but the team at Tropic Living have the passion for interior design to offer valuable advice on your next styling project. Kerrie and Phillip are very active in the business, looking after the buying, logistics, warehousing and administration and marketing. Leonie Muller has been a part of their Mackay team for seven years, and specialises in styling to pull elements of a room together. With three years in the Tropic Living team, Heather Padula is a qualified florist and has a talent for blending textures and colours. Hannah is new to the team and is quickly forming a passion for interior styling. “I am fortunate to work with very creative and passionate people who love styling a home. So many things to buy and looks to try; we are always searching to bring Mackay a destination where they can enjoy new concepts in interior styling,” Kerrie said. Coming soon; Tropic Living is reintroducing a unique range of outdoor furniture. New designs and looks which are different to anything you’ll find locally. Kerrie and Phillip plan on expanding Tropic Living to more destinations throughout Central and North Queensland. Summer

flowers to plant now

If you thought your North Queensland garden could only consist of roughlooking foliage and large leaves, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. There are flowers which thrive in hot, wet summers; and the best time to plant for Christmas colour is in the spring. Creating a kaleidoscopic garden that can withstand North Queensland weather takes a bit of planning and preparation. You need to stock up on plants which thrive in subtropical conditions. Here are a few of our hot picks:

DAHLIAS These bright beauties are native to Mexico, so you know they like it hot. Burnt hues of crimson, dark tangerine and deep pinks are common colours of these flowering wonders. The blooms are long-lasting, so you get bang for your buck. You’ll find these are some of the last to keep flowering long into summer. Dahlias start blooming about 8 weeks after planting. Planting tip: Dahlias grow best in well-drained soil that is moist. Before planting, improve the soil by digging in organic matter such as compost, leaf mould and manure. Water heavily in spring, then sparingly in summer as Mother Nature will do the rest.

GARDENIAS Gardenias thrive in hot, muggy climates so they are perfect for a North Queensland summer. Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia makes them perfect additions to a tropical garden. The crisp white petals against a classic evergreen leaf adds a refined touch; with perfectly perfumed blooms. Gardenias love a bit of sun in the morning but ideally like to be kept in the shade during the afternoon and watered regularly. Planting tip: Gardenias grow very well in pots and make great feature plants. Move them to an area where the breeze will carry the perfume when the plant is in full bloom. Gardenias respond well to feeding and pruning. Once pruned they will burst with new growth.

ZINNIAS One of the easiest annuals to grow, zinnia flowers bring an explosion of colour wherever they go. A native of Mexico, they appreciate full sun and heat, which makes them an ideal addition to your North Queensland garden. Although these flowers only bloom once, you can harvest the seeds to plant the following spring. The vibrant colour is worth the effort. From petunia pink to daisy yellow, zinnias come in every eye-catching hue. Zinnias also attract bees and butterflies, adding to the magical flora and fauna in your garden.

PLANTING TIP: Zinnias adore the heat, and demand a well-drained position in full sun to give their best displays. Frequent cutting of blossoms helps many varieties to rebloom constantly for many weeks. Butterflies prefer flat, single zinnia blossoms. www.corelife.com.au 77

How small can hearing aids get?

Tiny devices are making inroads in hearing health treatment as features improve and costs come down. Some people leave hearing loss untreated for far too long as they are concerned about people seeing them wearing hearing aids. However, it can be more obvious you have a hearing loss if you leave it untreated. The constant request for repetition—the whats, pardons, and sorries hinder conversation and can become burdensome for the person with hearing loss, but the people they interact with. Amazing invisible options are available with manufacturers introducing ever-expanding ranges of IIC or Invisible In Canal hearing aids. And let’s not forget the remarkable Lyric hearing aid – billed as the world’s only true invisible hearing aid. IIC hearing aids are tiny, powerful devices that sit deep

in the ear canal making them virtually completely invisible to the people around you. The only indicator that you are wearing a hearing aid is a tiny removal line—a thin, clear plastic rod you use to remove the hearing aid. This means many people with mild to moderate hearing loss can use IIC aids to treat hearing loss with no one knowing. No more missed punchlines or misheard words. No more arguments over what was and wasn’t said. The television volume at an acceptable level! If the stigma of wearing visible hearing aids has stopped you or someone you know from treating hearing loss, now is the time to talk to your audiologist. MIND BODY SOUL

Oh baby, conception can be tricky You’re ready to get this baby show on the road, but your body just isn’t playing the game. You’re not alone. Studies show that up to 15 per cent of couples will have difficulty falling pregnant, due to a wide variety of factors. Hormones play a large part in fertility success. Exposure to hormones from years of contraceptive use, plastic bottles (PCB’s), consumption of certain meat and dairy products and elevated stress levels can make it hard for our body to maintain hormonal balance. Rowena Kissun has spent 12 years in the Whitsundays as an Integrative Medicine Practitioner. While she has helped patients with a myriad of conditions, increasingly more people are flocking to her clinic for help with hormonal imbalance.

These hormonal symptoms can include: • problems conceiving • hormonal acne on face or body • frequent miscarriage, morning sickness, postpartum mood fluctuations • premenstrual tension • weight gain and fluid retention • difficult menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes • problems sleeping and anxiety • low sex drive Many women are turning to effective natural therapies for balancing their hormones. How can natural therapies assist with fertility? The five main reasons couples visit Rowena for fertility related issues include: • Failed attempts at IVF. • An irregular period and not understanding if or when they ovulate. • Endometriosis or Polycystic Ovaries and how it may be creating difficulty.

• Low sperm count, or damaged sperm and needing an understanding of how to fix the situation. • Being told that “everything seems ok… just keep trying” but it’s not working. Understandably, couples can become frustrated when conventional methods haven’t worked. Rowena has handled many cases where a couple are close to giving up due to the disappointment of failed IVF attempts. In many cases, she has diagnosed simple nutritional deficiencies or hormone imbalances at certain stages of the cycle which are not always checked in a standard blood test. Once Rowena rules out any structural issues or disease states through blood tests and imaging, difficulty in falling pregnant can come down to the levels of specific nutrients that are required to facilitate the growing embryo. Rowena strives to help those who have confusion or issues with their health, even if they have tried IVF and can work in with a patient’s doctor. “There are more than 170 different vitamin,

mineral, hormone and toxin levels we can check, with specific natural medicines used to alleviate a situation. Unfortunately, it is more complicated than just taking a pregnancy multivitamin. Specific ingredients need to be taken in high dose and monitored to give the desired effect.” “I have consulted hundreds of couples for hormone balance and fertility at my clinics and it proves to be an immensely rewarding aspect of being an Integrative Medicine Practitioner. If you are having issues and need a helping hand, or would like some initial testing done, such as your egg reserve count and hormone levels, call the clinic for an appointment and I would love to help you create one of life’s precious miracles,” Rowena said. Hormone balance and fertility treatments are available at Kissun Clinics in Sydney, Mackay or the Whitsundays; or testing kits sent to your home along with video Skype consultations means Rowena can assist you anywhere in the world. Visit kissunclinics.com and give your future to have a family a fighting chance.

SUPER-FAST

SKIN TRANSFORMATION With Maitri’s New Bio-Identical Stem Cell Treatment

Maitri Aesthetics is very excited to announce their exclusive ‘Stem Cell Hair & Skin Rejuvenation’ treatment.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THIS TREATMENT?

Heidi Eastcott

This stem cell treatment is the only bio-identical growth factor peptide in the world. Bio-identical means that the DNA in our treatment is fully welcomed by our bodies. This is because it has 146 amino acids just like us. This treatment rapidly stimulates ‘Growth Factors’. These cells are responsible for almost everything in our body. The main responsibility is to heal our bodies and the younger we are the easier we heal. This represents exciting times as research is currently underway to see how this treatment can also heal the skin from types of skin cancer by supporting rapid healthy cell growth.

WHY IS THIS TREATMENT DIFFERENT? Maitri offers various medical grade skin treatments with certified medical devices. We pride ourselves on education with client safety and wellbeing at the forefront of our treatment plans.

There are currently very popular growth factor and peptide treatments on the market today which are being used with success. The scientific data has proven this treatment to be over 100 times more effective than any other skin and hair rejuvenation on the market today. Other treatments have varying amounts of amino acids, 20, 40, 70 etc. But if it does not have 146 it is not bio identical and will not achieve the amazing results we are getting. Some of these treatments take blood, spin and create plasma to rejuvenate the skin and rely on the quality of the individual’s growth factor. Your growth factor declines with age which means, so does the quality of the product being used. The whole reason our treatment works so well is that it generates new fibroblasts cells using an external growth factor, rather than relying on what the body already has.

Remember this stem cell treatment is bio identical meaning that it has 146 amino acids, EXACTLY like us. This means no side effects, no down time and super-fast results! Consultation is always complementary find them on facebook or instagram & book today.

WHO CAN BENEFIT? The real question is who can’t? This treatment has varying ways it can be used to enhance collagen, elastin and keratin. The list includes; balding, scalp rejuvenation, hair growth, acne treatment, scarring anywhere on the body, total skin rejuvenation, diminish pore size, pigmentation, fine lines, tighten and brighten the skin, or for anyone who just wants to look younger and have a fresh glow to their skin.

How seeing an orthodontist first can save you money in the long term

Dr. Rosario

L

ike any medical procedure, Orthodontic treatment is not without risk. Because orthodontic treatment involves moving teeth through bone and surrounding structures, complications can arise at any point during your treatment. It takes expert knowledge to spot the signs, understand how your treatment should be progressing and ensure you are on track. With the heavy marketing and the rise of direct-toconsumer and mail-order orthodontic treatment options, many people are discovering firsthand that fast, poorly planned and cheap is not right when it comes to creating a healthy and attractive smile in the long term. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF UNSUPERVISED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT? Orthodontic procedures performed without professional supervision can lead to disappointing results and cause lasting damage to your teeth and gums. An unpleasant smile, receded gums, a poor bite and even tooth loss can occur. While there are risks associated with all orthodontic treatments, a specialist orthodontist will closely monitor your progress and oral health throughout your treatment so that adjustments can be made to safeguard the health of your teeth. A specialist orthodontist is an expert at safely straightening teeth and fixing bad bites. They’ve got the experience and knowledge to spot the

warning signs early so no damage is done. They also have the ability to safely alter your treatment for the best and most stable results. While there are many types of practitioners offering orthodontic services, they have not done the correct training to qualify as a dental specialist in the eyes of regulatory bodies, such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). In Australia, only a specialist has the right to call him or herself an orthodontist. WHAT IS A SPECIALIST ORTHODONTIST? Orthodontists dedicate their lives to continuously update their knowledge in the field of orthodontics. Orthodontics is all they do, all day, every day. In fact, your specialist orthodontist was first a trained and experienced general dentist before undergoing additional accredited specialisation. This involved being selected for an extremely competitive position to train for an additional 3 years of full time study. Those 3 years of full time commitment are a big deal, and your smile is a big deal too. HOW CAN THESE PROBLEMS COST MORE TO FIX? Dr Rosario will be able to provide you with a fairly accurate quote up front and set up systems to make it affordable for your family. As orthodontic

treatment is done gradually in stages, we will be able to set up a payment plan to spread out the cost of your treatment to suit your needs. Unfortunately, direct-to-consumer and mail-order unsupervised orthodontic procedures are done at your own risk and subsequently can require corrective treatments after suffering damage to your teeth and gums. As a result, these potentially dangerous do-it-yourself treatment options can cost thousands of dollars more than your original treatment plan with a specialist orthodontist. These corrective options can include a more extensive course of orthodontic treatment, implants or fixed devices, and even surgery. Corrective surgery is never something a specialist would recommend lightly, as they can be quite invasive and require lengthy recovery periods. This is why your specialist orthodontist monitors your treatment closely to ensure your treatment is safe and effective. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Your smile is one of your most important features and the first asset you present to the world, so you want to make sure it is in the best hands with a fully trained specialist orthodontist. If you’re self-conscious about the state of your teeth, then an orthodontic treatment plan can help restore confidence to your smile and help you live a happier, healthier life.

If you would like to improve your smile, Dr Rodriguez can help you visualize your new look. Call Braces 4U for a consultation 4840 2832 or find us at www.braces4u.com.au and take advantage of our payment plans

DAY D R E A M I S L A N D Where Your Great Barrier Reef Dreams Become Real

E

xperience a holiday island resort that is both luxurious and personable, tranquil and dynamic, natural and refined. A tropical paradise and a sanctuary from our busy lives where adventure abounds, and relaxation is easy to find. Welcome to Daydream Island, the recently redeveloped tropical island resort nestled in the heart of the Whitsunday Islands with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. Just twenty minutes by ferry from the mainland, Daydream Island is immersed in the natural beauty of the surrounding islands creating the pleasurable feeling of remoteness combined with easy travel to everywhere you wish to go. From your tranquil resort location there are a range of activities to explore. Take an Outer Great Barrier Reef tour, sail around the Whitsunday Islands, enjoy a guided kayak experience to Sunlover’s Cove or hire a jet ski and fly across the bay. After each activity you are moments from the comfort and tranquillity of your familiar surrounds. Sip a cocktail by the pool, indulge with a spa treatment and dine at one of the three on-island restaurants before returning to the seclusion of your private room. Daydream Island has been thoughtfully created so that you can do as much or as little as you choose. Leave the island in search of adventure or enjoy one of the many on-island activities. Take a bush walk to Rainforest lookout, stretch-out with a sunrise yoga session, indulge with a cocktail at the swim-up bar, play a game of badminton or croquet on the lawn or marvel at the enormous Living Reef encloser which is teaming with marine life. The charm of Daydream Island lays in its friendly, intimate feel combined with the plethora of fun, fascination and frivolity it offers.

Surrounded by Beauty Just months after its extensive redevelopment, Daydream Island has become a sparkling gem in the Whitsunday Islands. The vaulted ceiling in the atrium creates an impressive entrance leading to an open plan, light and airy lounge area for guests to relax. Each of the 277 rooms run from this central area to seamlessly border the large lagoon-style pools, tropical gardens, lush green lawns with views of sparkling blue sea and surrounding islands. Despite its size, the layout of the resort cleverly harnesses an intimate feel. As the afternoon sun sparkles, guests lounge in the soft envelope of the shaded poolside cabanas, others head to the swim-up bar for a refreshing cocktail as the afternoon’s live music act begins to sing sweet sunny melodies into the air. In the early evening light friendly wallabies gather on the lawn. Guests swing their legs from large double hammocks, gazing out to sea and watching the wallabies graze.

Delicious Cuisine With three exciting restaurants to indulge your appetites, dining at Daydream Island means every meal is a mouth-watering indulgence. A sumptuous buffet breakfast fuels your day, located at Graze, buffet restaurant. This unique dining experience is bordered by the Living Reef viewing windows which run the length of the restaurant, complemented by gently cascading waterfalls that create a natural amphitheatre. Guests can enjoy a full-English with the works

and eggs cooked how you like, fresh to order. Or sample an extravagant fresh fruit platter with yoghurt, cereal, pastries, pancakes and more. All the while, watching through the glass as the Living Reef marine-life comes to life. For dinner guests can return to Graze for buffet style feasts. Alternatively, for those looking for something more extravagant try the two waterfront restaurants which offer sensational Coral Sea views and a la carte menus. Infinity is the resort’s Asian Fusion restaurant which boasts a Teppanyaki Suite and a fine-dining ambience. The service is impeccable and each dish is hand-crafted and perfectly cooked. For a more relaxed vibe try Inkstone Kitchen and Bar offering Australian cuisine with a focus on steak and fresh seafood overlooking the pool and beach with free-flow al fresco dining. Inkstone also serves a la carte breakfast for Deluxe Room and Suite guests.

Daydream Believers Each room has been modernised to perfection with delicate white features and a host of creature comforts. Soak in a warm bath, watch the latest movies for free from a large curved T.V. screen and breathe in the fresh sea air from your private terrace.

The Spectacular Living Reef Perhaps the most exciting experience on Daydream Island is the Living Reef ecosystem which is one of the biggest in the southern

hemisphere. This free form coral lagoon wraps 200m around the central building, bordering the buffet restaurant and breakfast lounge. This fascinating experience mesmerises both children and adults. Guests are able to enjoy a meal while watching through glass windows as stingrays and other reef fish swim by. The Living Reef experience is not just for show, this carefully constructed ecosystem is the work of dedicated marine biologists who hand-pick and carefully curate the setting. The environment is almost exactly the same as the real coral reef containing 1.5 million litres of filtered fresh sea water. There is plenty of opportunity to interact with the Living Reef through daily Fish Feeding and Stingray Splash education talks hosted by the resident marine biologists. Learn the names of each creature and discover how they live, what they eat and other fascinating facts. For a mesmerising underwater experience without getting wet, head to the underwater observatory which is simply jaw-dropping. This floor to ceiling acrylic window transports you to an under-water world where you can watch the coral breathe as it would in the wild, see enormous shovel nose rays glide by, touch the glass and press your nose against the screen to feel as if you are part of this fascinating world. For the more adventurous guests, try the Living Reef Snorkel Experience at the Swim Lagoon. Here you can snorkel in a totally safe, all-weather environment. Hold a sea cucumber, swim with stingrays, dive into a living, breathing reef that is as easy and comfortable as a swimming-pool!

TOURISM WHITSUNDAYS Meet CEO Tash Wheeler

HAPPY WINTER FELLOW CORE READERS, Tourism Whitsundays is thrilled to be part of the Core Magazine family! As this is my first column, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to let the Core community know what it is we do at Tourism Whitsundays (TW). TW is a not-for-profit membership based Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO) which is responsible for global destination marketing and visitor attraction for the Whitsunday region. We are the lead agency recognised by Tourism and Events Queensland and the Whitsunday Regional Council to lead the promotion of the region as a tourism destination. We’re a small passionate team who dedicate each day to keeping the Whitsundays at the forefront of holiday makers minds. As the locals know, we are one of the most desired holiday destinations, we’re lucky enough to have iconic landmarks literally in our backyard from the 74 Island wonders, our one-of-a kind Heart Reef, to the crown in glory the Great Barrier Reef. We’re not all beach and islands in the Whitsunday region and at Tourism Whitsundays we believe in marketing all aspects of the area including Airlie Beach, Bowen, Collinsville, the Great Barrier Reef, Proserpine and the Whitsunday Islands. This year alone we have secured an additional $1.25 million in funding through the $250K Mainland Monsoon Flooding Campaign and the joint funded $1 million Island Recovery Campaign. We have proudly generated over $23m in leisure publicity exposure for the Whitsunday. And through a partnership with Whitsunday Coast Airport we have invested in one of the regions emerging markets, China, through being part of the $25m connecting with Asia 3-year consortia partnership with Tourism Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Brisbane Marketing and Gold Coast Tourism. And the team have been working closely with Queensland Tourism Industry Council through the $85k Industry Development Program which sees a series of insightful business workshops held in the region. We work closely on the ground with Bowen Tourism and Business, Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce and Proserpine Chamber of Commerce to ensure activation is spread throughout our wonderful region all in the aim to not only increase visitation but drive expenditure, dispersal and length of stay. The tourism industry in the Whitsundays accounts for one in three jobs throughout the region, it’s the lifeblood of many businesses both directly and indirectly. As a membership-based organisation it’s important for us to understand the strengths and challenges facing our members, we strive to continually put our members in the spotlight! Our vision is to showcase the Whitsundays as a globally recognised destination in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. We need to continue to rally together as an industry and share the positive things that are happening with new developments and experiences to drive market share to our region.

3 days 74 bands | 8-10 nov 2019 Gavin Butlin is promising music fans the very best line-up yet when the curtain rises on the seventh annual Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 8-10. “We all know by now that only in Airlie Beach can you see 74 bands beside 74 islands on the Great Barrier Reef, but what we’ve also learned over the last six years is how to deliver a winning line-up mix,” the festival founder said. The festival has made two line-up announcements for 2019 to date, with another soon to follow and more headline acts to be revealed. THE PROMOTER’S TOP PICKS SO FAR ARE: SMOKIE With sold out tours around the globe, platinum selling albums spanning five decades and over 25 million albums sold worldwide, hit UK act Smokie is one of the world’s most successful bands, with a place in the time-honoured rock n’ roll elite. From their chart-topping hits like ‘Oh Carol’ and ‘I’ll Meet You at Midnight’ to their landmark ballad of unrequited love ‘Living Next Door to Alice’, this is an act not to be missed.

Smokin’ line-up and more to come Airlie Beach Festival of Music first acts revealed

“A lot of hit record songs and sore throats the next day from all the singing,” is what founding member Terry Uttley is promising fans in Airlie Beach. “We only get to come to Australia once every three years because of our commitments to most of the rest of the world, so join us live for this performance in paradise,” he said. JOHN WILLIAMSON From his first song, ‘Old Man Emu’, which went to Number One for five weeks in 1970, to his tunes of today, John Williamson has continued to create enduring hits including ‘True Blue’, ‘Hawkesbury River Lovin’ and ‘Raining on the Rock’ to name but a few. ‘Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone’ and ‘Looking for a Story’ will bring audiences to tears, balanced by the humour of songs such as ‘When My Horse Came In’ and ‘Simpson Desert’. “I’m still having fun touring - I guess I will keep going until 2020 (my fiftieth year in the industry). For me, it’s all about entertainment, just like my concerts and I can’t wait to get on the road with this new tour,” Williamson said. THE AUSTRALIAN ROCK COLLECTIVE The Australian Rock Collective (ARC) comprises Darren Middleton (Powderfinger), Kram (Spiderbait and The Wrights), Mark Wilson (Jet), and Davey Lane (You Am I, The Pictures and The Wrights). Formed to perform at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Darren Middleton says the quartet haven’t looked back since. “We got back from that trip five years ago and said, ‘holy hell, this is just the best band ever’ so we decided to keep going,” he said. Promising not just songs from their own collections but hits from the likes of Easy Beats, Split Enz and Crowded House, Middleton says Airlie Beach Festival of Music fans are in for a treat. “What we bring is a whole lot of energy and fun and a lot of songs you’re going to know and love,” he said. YOTHU YINDI & THE TREATY PROJECT Yothu Yindi & The Treaty Project is Australia’s most successful and internationally recognised indigenous band, featuring emerging first nations artists and special guests. In this exciting new, electronica-driven formation, founding members of Yothu Yindi - Witiyana Marika, Stu Kellaway and Kevin Malngay Yunupingu - are joined onstage by former band members and popular Indigenous singer/ songwriters. The group also features cabaret artist Kamahi Djordon King and emerging Yolngu singers, Yirrnga Yunupingu and Yimila Gurruwiwi. Rounding out the line-up is multi-instrumentalist Ania Reynolds (the current musical director of Circus Oz), Kellaway's son Roy on guitar, along with DJ/ producer Gavin Campbell on additional percussion and the Toraiz SP-16 sampler.

Tickets are now on sale via OzTix, BigTix, Whitsunday Tickets, The MECC and direct from www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au. For all the latest news, follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ost of us know from a young age whether we’re good at art or not. And while some of us have a natural ability to transfer what we see or feel into a masterpiece, tattooist Robyn Goller says that you never stop learning to enhance your craft. For the past 25 years she has made a living from art. While her creativity has always flourished, the medium has changed dramatically. For many years, Robyn specialised in airbrushing custom-designs onto cars, trucks and motorbikes. But for the past six years, she switched from painting metal to tattooing skin. “Airbrushing to tattooing certainly was a challenge. While art is art, it takes a while to master using a tattoo machine. Art is forever evolving, and you constantly challenge yourself to learn new skills.” The ability to learn new techniques has allowed Robyn to excel in many different styles of tattooing, from black and grey realism to new-

school and water colour. She is part of the talented team at Whitsunday Tattooing in Airlie Beach and credits the surrounding beauty of the Whitsundays for much of her colour inspiration. “I moved here with my husband from the Lockyer Valley. We found ourselves stopping here 13 years ago while travelling and knew it was where we wanted to be,” she said. Robyn understands that people hold special meaning for each of their tattoos, and that the design reflects an important part of who they are.

Robyn Goller

“It’s why we have such a passion for what we do, we’re helping people to literally wear their heart on their sleeve.” Whitsunday Tattooing is located on the Esplanade in Airlie Beach, over the road from Sidewalk Café. Robyn still offers custom air-brushing too, reach out to her at the tattoo studio for your next piece of artwork, on your treasured vehicle or skin-deep.

Featuring bands and bull riding, an extreme FMX display and fireworks, this inaugural charity event is sure to be a hit with the whole family. Coming to the Sarina Showgrounds from October 5 to 7, take the opportunity to get back to nature and make new friends with onsite camping during the action-packed weekend. Your support will go toward raising funds for Grapevine, to run awareness and training sessions about suicide prevention and intervention within our local community. Behind the scenes Diane and Peter Zigmantas are a local Oakenden couple with six children. Their passion to help drive down the suicide rate in Mackay is the driving force behind creating the Sarina Ute Muster. The event slogan, getSUM; is both a subtle reference to Peter’s background with the ADF, but also a representation of getting what you need to live a long and happy life. #getSUM; support, #getSUM; fun, #getSUM; love, #getSUM; professional help. The inclusion of the semicolon is in reference to when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.

Peter is a suicide prevention trainer in the community, is an ex-serviceman of twenty years with the ADF, suffers the effects of PTSD and works with the RSL as a welfare officer and professionally as a regional risk manager for a national recruitment company. He has lost a number of friends to suicide, including an older brother. Di has training in preventative healthcare and equine assisted therapy for mental well-being. Madison Dowden Mackay’s socially conscious beauty queen

M

ackay teenager, Madison Dowden, has shown that living in a rural area shouldn’t limit your life’s potential. The recently crowned Miss Teen Australia International QLD harnessed her rural upbringing here in Mackay to raise funds to support farmers in need, saying that they are the backbone of our country. The 14-year-old Mercy College student raised more than $2,000 for Rural Aid's Buy a Bale of Hay, which helps feed livestock in drought ridden communities, as part of a community conscious aspect of the pageant. The ‘Mrs, Ms, Miss & Miss Teen Australia International’ competition emphasises the talents, accomplishments, personalities, and the social contributions of its participants. Madison entered her first beauty competition last year, coming 1st runner-up at the RACQ CQ Rescue Model Search. She loved the experience and was inspired to enter Miss Teen Australia International as her first major beauty pageant to help support an important rural charity and the Mackay community. Despite being relatively fresh on the pageant scene, Madison took out the national crown as a joint winner, with Jazzie Alessio from New South Wales, giving Madison the opportunity to represent Australia this July at Miss Teen International in Charleston, West Virginia in the USA. Not only will she be competing against www.corelife.com.au 98 98 www.corelife.com.au

other teenagers from across the globe, but it gives a global platform to spread awareness for her chosen charities, which now also includes Make a Wish Australia. Madison said she was profoundly moved after a visit to the Westmead Children’s Hospital after the crowning pageant event. “It made me realise how extremely blessed I am to be a healthy teenager. “After raising $400 for the hospital, I was inspired to continue fundraising efforts for Make a Wish Australia and I’ve raised just over $1,000 for them so far. I’m absolutely living my dream, and this organisation has the ability to give sick children and teenagers the opportunity to live theirs too. I believe in the power of a wish, to help a seriously ill child escape their reality for a day and just be a kid.” Madison said that this international pageant is very much out of her comfort zone, but she is excited to experience the American pageant scene.

and I are also taking the opportunity to visit New York and I am excited about the shopping. “I am proud to represent Mackay and Australia at the international event. I am excited for the opportunity that this has given me, and I look forward to hopefully bringing home the crown.” HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR PAGEANTS? “I have been with Brooke Lee Modelling for over two years and I go to weekly classes with my teacher Shelby Finucan to practise my cat walking skills. I have makeup lessons with Lush Beautique’s Jenna Quast and have regular meetings with my National Director, Ferial Youkim, which include skills classes for enhancing public speaking, question and answer sessions and building confidence. I also work with Photography by Dino to improve my photographic modelling skills.” WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT MODELLING?

“I love my life in Mackay. I play netball and touch football. I really enjoy camping, fishing and “I am looking forward to seeing the pageant crabbing with my family and spending time with system in America as it is a big part of everyday my best friend,portofairlie.com.au Tiana.” 1800 676 526 American life.
