Tell Us Something most people don't know about you? I had racing pigeons for many years Describe your personality in three words: Loyal, Practical & Concise Combining hands-on customer service and hospitality experience with the attention to detail and precision of an accountant creates excellent qualities for the CEO of one of the Whitsundays leading restaurants. Grant is the mastermind, often the driving force behind the scenes, of Fish D’Vine, famous for its succulent seafood. Originally from Wangaratta in NE Victoria, Grant grew up on a farm then spent 20 years of his adult life in Coffs Harbour before moving to the Whitsundays four years ago. Back in Coffs Harbour, Grant managed the Business Enterprise Centre before becoming Financial Advisor for a large holiday resort. It was here that he developed an interest in hospitality. Next step was taking over a lease of a large bistro within a club. He managed 20 staff and worked day and night for nine years. After almost a decade of this, Grant knew it was time to make a change. When he came to Airlie Beach on holiday with future wife, Mel, the couple dreamed about moving to our vibrant holiday town. Five weeks later Grant had the job at Fish D’Vine. Four years on, Grant and Mel have created the perfect life for themselves. They have five children between them, with only one still living at home. This leaves plenty of time for getting out on the water with family and friends; fishing and camping around the islands and reef. www.corelife.com.au 12 12 www.corelife.com.au

Describe your personality in three words: Happy, friendly, wild Being at one with nature is something Tiago loves most in the world. He enjoys getting totally lost in the wild, camping in remote locations, exploring beaches and unknown places. This is one of the reasons he chose to spend time travelling the world and found himself starting a new life in Australia. Originally from Brazil, Tiago has been living in Airlie Beach for six months. He has a Bachelors Degree in Tourism and has worked in this industry since 2002. During this time he has worked for a travel agency, flight company, hotels and restaurants. Tiago now has a fulfilling and exciting job at The Pub, Airlie Beach Hotel and is happy to work in the fast-paced dynamic environment of the newly renovated bar and bistro. Being extremely close to family and friends in Brazil has meant that moving to start a new life in a new country has been a challenge. Now that he has settled in Airlie Beach, it is a decision he is pleased with. In his spare time, Tiago loves to explore the surrounding natural environment. He also enjoys dancing and skateboarding. You can find Tiago manning the bar at The Pub, Airlie Beach Hotel most nights so make sure you call in and SAY HI!

Luckily for students at St Catherine’s Catholic College in Proserpine, Principal Mel Scherwitzel believes in the importance of educating the whole student head, heart and hands.

“These activities provide opportunities for our students to achieve balance in their schooling experience and to become responsible and involved members of different groups within our College community,” Mrs Scherwitzel said.

“With every child at the College, we know their individual story and are helping them write it for their future,” she said. “We believe in educating the whole person in a variety of settings that will stimulate creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, independence as well as compassion, responsibility and understanding for our global humanity.” So what’s the College’s secret? Perhaps it is their nurturing environment coupled with outstanding staff? Or maybe it is their vibrant, modern and innovative learning facilities that play host to an abundance of subjects and extra-curricular activities for both Primary and Secondary students. These subjects include a rich arts program that encompasses music, drama, textiles and media subjects, a sports excellence program in which students can complete

Driving to Save

COMMUNITYLIFE

Lives T

here are not many individuals who would want to navigate 3500km of mostly unsealed roads from Melbourne to Townsville Via Birdsville in a twowheel drive Toyota Hillux worth less than a $1000.

This is, however, something that Mark Shepherd-Smith (Sheps) and Robert Mackenzie (Macka) will be doing in a mad seven day dash this October to raise valuable funds for cancer research in this year’s Shitbox Car Rally. This inspiring national event and committed charity organisation has been working tirelessly for over ten years, raising over $19 million in donations for many different types of Cancer Research. It began with a bereaved son (James Freeman - Shitbox Rally Founder) wanting to make a difference after losing both parents to cancer within 12 months of each other. The Shitbox Rally has grown immensely over the years. Twice a year, 250 teams participate and there is a huge waiting list for those wanting to take part in the event. One of the people on this waiting list was Sheps, an Airlie Beach local who, on his 40th birthday, decided he also wanted to make a difference. “I know so many people that have been affected by cancer, so I knew this was the ideal opportunity to have some fun and raise money at the same time,” said Sheps. The rules are simple; raise a minimum of $5000 for the cause and make sure your vehicle is worth no more than $1000. The determined duo are determined to raise the bar by setting themselves a goal of raising $20,000. Having raised $12,359 so far they are still hot on the fundraising trail and looking for any corporate sponsorship or donations they can put to the cause. To celebrate their long-suffering, patient and understanding wives, Sheps and Macca have decided to call their team “Our Wives Said No’ and will be embracing a Mad Max theme. With the excitement of fancy-dress days including ‘OP SHOP GENDER SWAP’, Sheps and Macka bring a bucket-load of mischief to the event that is all about embracing life and raising much needed funds to support Cancer Research. For Sheps and Macka, the car they are driving has a special meaning as it was donated by a dear friend, Kerry Dibbin, who is currently battling cancer. Sheps and Macka send a massive “THANKYOU” to Sponsors, Local Businesses, Friends, Family and the community for getting behind such a great Cause.

“If you’re entertaining people and inspiring positive feelings in them, they’ll happily hand over money. That’s what fundraising is.” said James, Shitbox Rally Founder.

iving back to the community is something we can all do, if we pause during our busy lives to think of those less fortunate. With more than 40 years serving our community, MADEC Ltd is one of our local organisations; making a real difference by introducing innovative programs to assist a wide group of people in the Mackay and Whitsundays regions. As well as Support services for young people 8 to 21 yrs, MADEC provides a range of Disability support services In the Mackay Region and is NDIS registered. In the Whitsundays, MADEC provides youth support services through Youth Empowerment and Support Service (YESS) which is funded by the Queensland Government Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women. YESS is able to support young people to link in with education and other training opportunities, as well as assist with other barriers. Torii Kelly is the Whitsunday Region YESS Youth Worker for MADEC Ltd. She explains how through her own physical and mental health experience, she came up with an initiative to help young people access subsidised physical health services to benefit their mental health and wellbeing.

“After engaging in physical activity over the past two years, I have seen incredible improvements in my overall physical and mental health. I spoke to my manager about my ideas, and she suggested I put a plan together to approach our board. Once I received approval, I began planning and collaborating with local fitness venues. “The YESS Physical Health program will allow young people aged between 14 – 21 years of age whom are currently accessing mental health services, have subsidised access to a fitness program. It is a new aspect of the already established YESS services available in both regions. Currently the venues involved with the physical health program are Airlie Fitness, Whitsunday Martial Arts, Mana Performance Centre and Gravity Fitness,” Torii said. Owner of Mana Performance Centre, Adam Warnock, also knows firsthand how fitness can greatly help those suffering with mental health issues. “Coming from a small town and having gone through similar issues myself, physical activity has made huge improvements in my overall physical and mental health. We are hoping to be able to provide similar outcomes for our local youth,” he said.

access this service. Airlie Fitness Venue Manager, Chris Elms, said “We are very proud to be a part of this fantastic program, as we have seen first-hand the benefits physical activity can have for anyone experiencing mental health issues.” Dan Zealand, Co-owner of Whitsunday Martial Arts agreed and commented, “We’re excited to meet some new people and hopefully we can assist in turning a pretty ordinary situation around. If this program changes just one person’s situation, that’s a pretty good outcome.” This program is in no way intended to replace traditional services, rather it’s an additional option for young people to benefit from. Torii said, “We would like to thank BHP for their kind donation through the Benefiting My Community Program, this has assisted with the implementation of the 6-month pilot program.” For more information or to request a referral form please contact Torii Kelly on 0429 366 451 or victoria.kelly@madec.org.au.

The program kicks off this month and already there is a waiting list of young people keen to

Paddling for a Purpose Five days, 404 kilometres and one paddle. This is the massive challenge, Philip Ward, will face head-on this November. He will paddle his way along the mighty Murray River in one of the greatest adventure races in Australia, to raise funds for a local youth mental health organisation, headspace. Philip is no stranger to the Massive Murray Paddle (MMP), having completed the challenge five times. However, this time comes with a significant difference. “The last time I completed the MMP was in 1996. This year I turned 60 and haven’t paddled in two decades, so I imagine it will be quite a different challenge. I’m now out to prove that anything is possible when you give it your all, take a chance and reach out for support,” he said. He first completed the race in 1973 as a 15-year-old. He had to obtain special permission from the race organisers as the minimum age to participate is 16. He was already an accomplished canoer. He started the sport as a

10-year-old and represented Victoria in state and national championships in both sprint racing and slalom white water paddling. He decided to compete in this year’s challenge back in February and set an impressive training schedule. He paddles 60km throughout the Mackay region weekly and aims to paddle more than 7km daily on an indoor rower. He has three sessions of weight training weekly and cycles for cross-training. He completed the paddling section of the Zach Mach in May and is entered to cycle in the River to Reef 135km event in September.

And yet, many traditional services aren’t equipped to address the unique barriers that young people face to accessing mental health support. With a focus on early intervention, we work with young people to provide support at a crucial time in their lives; to help get them back on track and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health in the future.”

Whitsunday Regional Council CEO

DIVING HEADFIRST INTO OUR COMMUNITY “Coming from the West, I am consistently surprised at the big hearts and resilience of Queenslanders and their connection to community.”

currently underway and near completion with the Whitsunday Regional Council and looks forward to continuing the momentum of development to meet community expectation.

Bringing more than 20 years of local government experience, the Whitsunday Regional Council warmly welcomes new CEO, Kenn Donohoe. From the red savannah of Western Australia to the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays, Kenn’s intention is to help propel our region into a prosperous future. He joins us from the Serpentine-Jarrahdale region, where as CEO he assisted the local government in becoming the fastest developing in Western Australia and one of the fastest growing in Australia.

“Many of these projects underway are hallmark projects and will realise significant gains for our community; from the Main Street of Proserpine upgrade through to the development of Flagstaff at Bowen, and the continued revitalisation of Shute Harbour.

His passion is in serving the community, as he has done for the past 20 years as the CEO of local government organisations in places such as Broome, the Shire of Mt Marshall and Chittering. He is excited about the value of capital projects

“I was also privileged to get out to Collinsville where the Mayor and Cr. Grieger introduced me to many of the businesses in the town where we will continue current works,” Kenn said. Kenn moved to the Whitsundays with his wife, Colleen, and as an avid scuba diver, he is most excited about exploring the diverse underwater world of our local reefs. “I have been a qualified Scuba Diver since I was

15 and have a passion for Wreck Diving. Having dived through Micronesia and the Pacific on some of the larger wrecks there, I will be excited to again dive the Yongala Wreck and some of the local reef areas in the Whitsundays. “I know we will take advantage of the world-class diving, fishing, nature playground that is the Whitsundays and can’t wait to get in the water to look at the new Sculptures that have been carefully put alongside our beautiful reef,” he said. Kenn is excited about experiencing all the Whitsundays has on offer. He commented, “Colleen and I are looking forward to the Ocean Rafting and the awardwinning Jet Ski experience that everyone is raving about as well. Ok, I may be more excited about the Jet Ski’s than Colleen, but we are really privileged to be in this region and look forward to being a part of this magnificent community.”

Airport aquarium has travellers hooked V

ISITORS to the Whitsundays have quickly become hooked on the Whitsunday Coast Airport’s new $350,000 aquarium in the expanded departure lounge.

As part of the $15 million terminal upgrade, the 10 metre aquarium has become an instant hit as travellers can now step off the plane and snap a selfie with the heart reef - before they've event left the airport. The aquarium is a first for an airport in Australia and holds over 30,000 litres of water and houses over 100 species of fish. The four tonnes of moulded coral is created from urethane, common in aquariums, with the water being turned over and filtered every hour. The first year will be labour intensive for the aquarium, as all the levels are monitored around the clock to control the Whitsunday Coast Airport’s very own under water eco-system. The 400 plus fish swimming around the tank were all sustainably caught from the Great Barrier Reef. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor, Andrew Willcox, said the aquarium is an exciting novelty for the airport and gives tourists a small taste of the wonders they will find in our region. “The Whitsundays is the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef so travellers will now instantly think of the 74 islands including the famed Heart Reef. “The first thing visitors see when they arrive and the last thing before they go is this stunning aquarium creating positive memories of the Whitsundays.” Tourism Whitsundays Chairman, Al Grundy, said it doesn’t matter whether visitors are from overseas or within Australia, they are going to come here and go wow, wow, wow. “And wow, we are the wonder of the beautiful Whitsundays and indeed the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef,” he said. Whitsunday Coast Airport General Manager, Brian Joiner, said travellers coming to and departing from the region by air will now be met with more toilets, bigger departure lounges, a larger baggage claim area and an interactive 3D augmented reality screen. “Our airport attracts 500,000 passengers annually and the new terminal will ensure their transit experience is first class. "The aquarium is getting plenty of exposure on social media, especially Instagram, which is raising the profile of not only the airport, but also the Whitsunday Region,” www.corelife.com.au www.corelife.com.au he said. 22 22

Enjoy A Hire Car Holiday with Hertz Nothing starts your holiday off better than jumping into an awaiting hire car and pulling away smoothly onto unexplored roads. With a hire car your adventure begins immediately, you are independent, mobile and ready to discover a new exciting destination. Having a hire car with you on your trip gives you peace of mind, as well as the comfort and freedom that you can get at home. Driving yourself and having that extra bit of room for luggage and souvenirs will give you much more enjoyment on your holiday than you would experience on busy public transport or with expensive taxis. At Hertz, we have vehicles to suit all drivers, small

compact hatches, SUV and commercial 4WD vehicles, including 12 seat minibuses & utes. All cars are less than 2 years old with low kilometres. Baby & booster seats, GPS or mine-spec equipment is also available upon request. We like to go the extra mile with our service; when a customer commences their journey and upon their return we will have a uniformed Hertz staff member there to assist them and ensure they are familiar with the vehicle. Our rewards program, with the ability to earn points, is transferable anywhere in Australia. We find it’s the little details that can make a significant impact on our customers’ experience with Hertz.

The Whitsundays boasts a stunning natural environment and some of the most remote areas, accessible only by car, are the most incredible. We recommend many easy to drive to local attractions to our guests such as the beaches of Bowen, Cedar Creek Falls and seeing Platypus in the wild at Eungella. To book your hire car call Sherie and her team directly on 4946 4687 or go to their counter at the Whitsunday Coast Airport next time you fly in. Our team is very proud to work at Hertz, they strive to make our customers feel valued and are there to make a difference to our renters.

With the size and configuration of its vehicles, Whitsunday Transit offer an infinite number of charter options; from small wedding groups and large school groups to full coaches for events such as the Bowen Races. Sales & Marketing Co-ordinator, Marie Speed, commented, “We welcomed the upgrade to the Whitsunday Coast Airport and likewise decided to revamp our image also. We now stand out in “bright canary yellow” when greeting passengers. Our smiling faces are only surpassed by our bright uniforms, our new modern airport booth and a creative new bus paint scheme. You cannot miss us.” On the road, Whitsunday Transit drivers deliver a comprehensive local commentary and guests can take advantage of free Wi-Fi on-board. he Airlie Beach Foreshore Revitalisation has quickly become a hive of activity morning, noon and night after the $6.3 million redevelopment which was officially opened by Mayor Andrew Willcox in June. The stunning foreshore has been revitalized and boasts, a beach step stadium, a sound stage for events, a new tourist bus drop-off area, a refurbished amenities block, a massive 10.5m high new shaded playground, an improved market stall area with extra lighting, 62 new sealed carparks plus extensive new landscaping and seating. Mayor Andrew Willcox said the redevelopment showcased the Airlie Beach foreshore as a community hub for families and tourists. “The revitalization has breathed new life

into the foreshore with a focus being on the unique seaside location.

the Whitsunday islands and Jubilee Pocket area which had deteriorated and required upgrading.

“Connectivity along the foreshore has been improved with a three-metre wide pedestrian path along the beach,” he said.

The active sewer rising main located in the foreshore was also upgraded during the earthworks as the current one was far undersized to cope with future growth of the area.

“The already popular Bicentennial Walkway will be extended by linking the Airlie Beach Lagoon to the Whitsunday Sailing Club. “This means that families and visitors can virtually stroll along the Coral Sea all the way from Cannonvale Beach to Airlie Beach,” Mayor Willcox said. A major part of the project was upgrading and improving the existing major underground services. Ergon Energy approached Council to undertake urgent works to the lines supplying power to

This required digging a trench to locate existing pipeline and installing almost 200 metres of new pipe from the current toilet block to just past the cenotaph/ picnic area near Fairy Tree Park. $4.8 million of this project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program. Eligible works will be funded under the Commonwealth and State Government Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Food with a view

“Waterfront views are rare these days. We are very lucky to not only be in Whitsundays but to have such an amazing view on offer for our customers.” A much-needed social hub for locals to meet, bond, talk business and have fun. Airlie Beach Hotel’s rejuvenated restaurant, The Pub, has spared no expense in becoming the hottest new place to see and be seen. Boosted by the Whitsunday Council’s foreshore rejuvenation, The Pub now boasts one of the most magical waterfront vistas in Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach Hotel Marketing Manager, Mark Wilkins, explains how the multi-million-dollar fit out has created a location where everyone can feel welcome. “The atmosphere is relaxed, but the fittings are classy and modern. No expense has been

spared in aesthetics and practical inclusions with the Whitsundays climate in mind; including glass chillers to serve the coldest beers, free sparkling water and barista-style fresh coffee, an outdoor misting cooling system for summer, places to charge your cell phone and an outside bar with a stage for entertainment. “This will cater for Sunday Sessions providing free live entertainment every Sunday afternoon, as well as some big events on the horizon,” Mark said. The food and beverage selection is a major talking point for The Pub, which boasts the largest menu in town with added daily specials. “Steaks are a specialty and we have two meat smokers. We offer a FREE ‘All you can eat’ soup, salad, veggies and dessert bar with any

main meal purchase. We have a fantastic wine list including international and premium selections. Our secret weapon however is ‘Thiago the Mixoligist from Brazil’. His cocktails are truly something special.” The old bottle shop and Mangrove Jacks will soon be turned into a Liquor and Tobacco ‘superstore’ with a huge drive-through, perfect for large vehicles and boats. The refurbished rooms provide one of the most central locations to stay in Airlie Beach, now with even better Coral Sea views thanks to the foreshore redevelopment. Stay tuned for some huge giveaways including a Yaris Car valued at $20,000 plus a share in $25,000 cash! Follow Airlie Beach Hotel on Facebook to stay up to date with promotions and giveaways.

Raising the bar for 7 yearS

La Tabella – Where Quality Matters “We raised the bar for service and food and will continue to provide the best dining experience Airlie Beach has to offer for years to come”

I

t’s well known that Italians are deeply versed in the gioie della tavola, or “the joys of the table.” At La Tabella, the delight of the Italian long lunch or communal dinner is celebrated in the heart of Airlie Beach. Owner, Leni Fries, had a vision to bring a superior level of service and high-quality cuisine to Airlie Beach. This September, her vision is honoured as La Tabella celebrates its seventh birthday and a reputation for raising the bar. Experience the elegance for yourself. Nonna’s long table can seat up to 20 people, inviting friends and family to revel in ravioli with a festive glass of Prosecco in hand. The seafood tasting platter is a popular lunch option. Al Fresco dining is available with one of the best beachfront positions in Airlie, or for a special

occasion, you can hire the intimate wine cellar for air-conditioned comfort. Italian taste is honoured, utilising fresh seasonal produce with bold flavour. The specials board changes daily, to allow for local seafood to be served soon after it’s caught. Pasta and gnocchi are made in-house daily as are the delicious desserts. Herbs are grown in gardens at the front of the restaurant for a true garden to plate experience and the extensive wine list features quality wines from Australia, New Zealand and Italy to complement the food.

“The standard of service comes down to the team being proud of where they work and confident in the quality of the food they serve. Some have been with me for many years, it is them I have to thank for providing locals and visitors such a memorable dining experience,” she said. Delectible antipasto, succulent seafood and decadent dessert. Dine at La Tabella and rediscover the Italian passion for good food and great company. Open seven days; breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Tiramisu is Leni’s own recipe, and she crafts her own Limoncello using organically grown lemons from her home tree. Her greatest achievement is giving her staff a place they can be proud to call their own. *Conditions apply - must mention this special offer when booking

Airlie ForeshStorre eet Interviews

We chatted to a few people who were enjoying the newly renovated Airlie Foreshore to see what they thought about the new facilities

Gail Urbano An Airlie Beach local, Gail has lived here for 11 years and was nominated to take part in the street interview by her enthusiastic Filipino mum. “I work at Airlie Beach Hotel and it has been wonderful to see how much the Foreshore has changed since I’ve been here. There are so many more tourists coming through now and there is a great atmosphere which brings so many people into The Pub. I get to chat with so many people and they all love it!”

Bridget and Nash Webb A couple of Airlie Beach ‘forever’ locals, the Webbs have lived here all their lives. “Nash asks if he can come down to ‘the big slides’ almost every day! He just loves it here. The play park is so adventurous and a real challenge for a lot of kids so it is good for their development and to get them away from the screens. While I watch him play, I can also catch-up on some work on my laptop, the shaded picnic benches make a great outdoor office!”

Annelies Holtof and Angus Cussen Annelies is from Belgium and Angus is from Melbourne, they met while living in London and are now meting Angus’ family here in Australia. They came to Airlie for a holiday within their holiday and to escape the chilly Melbourne weather. We caught up with them during their first walk along the Foreshore so it was great to hear about their initial impressions. “We just bought a picnic lunch from Woolworths and sat on the grass to enjoy the views and the sunny weather. The Foreshore looks great, so much space and a variety of places to sit, relax and enjoy. We love it here already!”

Talinka Kas from Holland, Jasmin Kerr from Canada and Connie Bolton from the UK When we met Talinka and Connie they had just bumped into Jasmin, recongnising her from a tour they all shared of Fraser Island the week before. They were very glad to see each other again! “We came here to explore the Whitsundays Islands. We have just come back from a boat trip and we all leave tomorrow. We think the Foreshore is very welcoming and looks very beautiful. It’s a great place to hang-out, we are all relaxing on soft grass under a tree and have been for a walk along the inter-connecting pathways.” 28

Leith and Angie Adams This couple have been married for an enviable 30 years and live in Horsham Victoria. They are holidaying in the Whitsundays for ten days, visiting friends and enjoying the warm weather. “We came to Airlie many years ago and more recently just after the cylone so we have seen the town change a lot during these visits. We are massively impressed by the new Foreshore, especially The Pub! We also love the tropical look with palm trees, going for long walks on the boardwalk and returning for a coffee. Everything is so convenient and easy here these days.”

Jenny Dvorak Jenny is originally from the UK and has just spent the last few months travelling the world, catching a train through Russia and exploring Asia. When we met Jenny she had just arrived in Airlie to spend three days here visiting friends. “I love that you can sit in the shade comfortably and watch the world go by. I love looking out at the water and just soaking up the tropical holiday ambience. It’s a really nice place to be.”

Kevin Johns Kevin is originally from Townsville and he had come down for the weekend to compete in the Triathlon which is a local sporting event currently celebrating its 21st year. “I first came here in 1996 and there have been vast changes in that time. I remember when there was no lagoon or boardwalk. It’s amazing to see how far this town has come. I love the new Foreshore because of its connectivity. It brings the whole town together and links everywhere you want to go. There is great access to everything now and you can get around so easily.”

From newhome buyers looking to make their first steps onto the real estate ladder to grandparents searching for a place where family can visit to play and enjoy. We have a selection of entry level constructed house and land packages available. “The only problem is”, as Stephanie Johnston mentions, “they are selling them faster than they can build” at present, proving quite clearly the desirability of the varied options available within the new estate, as well as the location itself. Fear not, however, as Andergrove Lakes has just completed its stage 7 development, Lugano Mews, which is the perfect option for first home buyers or investors searching for solid rental returns.

All differing stages of the development have individually shown significant promise to sell quickly and create a vibrant community estate. “So”, as Stephanie says, “whether you choose to live in the estate, buy and rent the house out or are seeking capital growth longer term, Andergrove Lakes has your needs covered.” The future also is set to pave the way for tourism accommodation, designed to purely compliment the estate and create a flourishing and exciting atmosphere and put Andergrove Lakes on the map as a destination for holiday makers to soak up the North Queensland sunshine and the active lakeside lifestyle.

In addition, notably, with one of Australia’s 8 cable parks located at the centre of it all, Andergrove Lakes is fast becoming one of the most sought-after estates in Mackay. It’s the perfect place that ticks boxes for many that are focused on embracing the outdoors. Most importantly, the estate is a community, where “we know everyone by name, the kids play together and form relationships”.

Business Fraud The cases of business fraud are on the increase and according to Queensland police they estimate a large number are not reported either because its very hard to prove or the owners are too embarrassed to report it. In my years of accounting I have come across many instances of employee theft and there is a common thread in nearly all cases and that is trust. The employee is usually a well trusted employee with access to bank accounts or cash. Cash businesses are always an easy target because cash is not so easy to track and account for. For example a client with a retail store found the till reconciliations were often out because the cash and eftpos did not tally with days takings. However, it was not until the business ran into financial difficulties that he looked deeper and found an employee had been reversing sales and taking cash from the till. We estimated the loss to be around $50,000. Another common way in our digital world of defrauding a business is by editing the banking electronic file (ABA file)to make multiple payments and changing the bank account details from the supplier to the thief’s bank account details. Very hard to pick up as the bank account name does not need to change. We recently had a client with a bookkeeper that had total control of the finances and was paying the owner wages and directing the payment to her own account, she was also misusing the company credit card and stealing from the owners personal account. To protect a business from fraud, you need separation of duties, so one employee approves the payments, and another actually processes them. In a small business it is often difficult to separate duties but its vital to avoid fraud.

GET THE ATTENTION YOU DESERVE! The big banks seem to be getting out of the business of providing financial advice. After the shocking revelations of the Banking Royal Commission earlier this year, ANZ and Westpac have already reduced, sold or shut their financial planning departments. NAB and Commonwealth are diverting all their efforts into remediating clients before assessing their response. AMP have plans to drastically reduce their adviser numbers. The established practise of leveraging their position of trust to use their advisers to funnel money into their own in-house insurance, super and pension products has been called out and laid bare. The damage to their reputations from the revelations that they’ve been charging ongoing service fees and often not providing ongoing service has been immense in the so called ‘fees for no

service’ saga. Banks are paying clients back hundreds of millions of dollars and totally rethinking their involvement in the provision of financial advice. Our observation is that the provision of highly personalised advice and the long-term partnership required on the journey towards financial freedom and an independent retirement is something best undertaken by a small business where the staff are long term and the relationship is personal. The big institutions should be the ones providing the actual products and handling the money as that is where their size does matter. Dive into a bigger pond with...

Digital Marketing F

or many businesses, the words ‘digital marketing’ instill anxiety, worry and potentially a headache.

As small business owners, we are expected to be up to date with all facets of business, so when a specific topic crosses our paths we don’t completely understand, the tendency is to ignore it. I often speak to clients, who believe digital marketing is something they should be applying to their business, but they don’t know where to start, what to do, or what a hashtag is. #youarenotalone! Digital marketing offers business owners the opportunity to dive into a bigger pond of potential customers. With over 15 000 000 steady users* on Facebook in Australia alone, that is a pretty big pond! Whilst digital marketing can be confusing, however, there are a few things you can do better understanding the opportunity it offers, including the basic data which can be used in your business marketing to tweak and improve your campaigns. Social media is a key component of the digital marketing world, and possibly the front runner when it comes to being the easiest and quickest way for business owners to start ‘digital marketing’. If you were fishing, and you got a bite, would you try to catch that fish? #yes! Social media offers the same opportunity for businesses, to ‘reel in’ more customers!

It is an additional way that business owners can get in front of their potential buyers, and establish a know, like and trust relationship before they have even picked up the phone. The benefit of this is that when these customers do decide to pop in or call, they will be much closer to a positive purchase decision. They already know you, your business and your services/ product offerings thanks to your social media activity.

One of the great benefits that digital marketing offers businesses, whether social or other forms, is real-time, tangible results and data. Information is dynamic and can be tweaked and updated instantly to reflect valuable findings, resulting in bigger bang for your buck. One concern raised is that digital media can be expensive, and it can be. Digital marketing can be an absolute minefield, however, there are things you can do to understand the basics of digital marketing and what it can do for your business. Regional Development Australia wants you to get your business ‘digitally fit’ and I would love to help you do just that! For just $22 inc GST for your first 1-on-1 consultation, we can work with you to get your business ‘up to speed’ and tackle digital marketing for your business. Kelair Pumps keeping industry pumping

ust as our heart pumps oxygen around our body in order to survive, many industries rely on a quality pump to keep their business alive. Whether it’s dewatering a mine, the removal of waste oil, the flow of harsh chemicals or even the movement of an explosive emulsion, pumps play a major part in more industries than we realise.

office, Myro grew the business to have a presence in Paget. An increase in local demand meant Kelair needed to hold more local stock, as well as include a workshop to provide expert servicing. In 2015 the business moved to larger premises to supply more brands and house a growing team of pumping experts.

Having the knowledge and experience to understand the engineering requirements of pumping different liquids is where local pump distributor, Kelair Pumps Australia shine. Queensland State Manager, Myro Bratkovic, leads the team here in Mackay, which sell and service pumping equipment Queensland-wide and as far afield as the Northern Territory, Papua New Guinea & the Pacific Islands.

Kelair’s exposure to a diverse range of industry gives them a unique advantage in the pumping market.

Myro joined Kelair in Sydney in 1993 as an applications engineer. There he was mentored by some of the best pumping minds in the country before expanding his career into external sales several years later. In 2007, he grabbed the opportunity to expand the Kelair brand into North Queensland by setting up a Branch Office in Mackay. From humble beginnings in a home

“I don’t think there’s an industry sector that I’ve not worked with, and I don’t think there’s too many industrial pump salesmen in regional Queensland with this type of broad ranging experience. That’s the great benefit of working for a premier pump supplier that handles world-class products,” Myro said. Kelair excels at the difficult applications that most other pump suppliers can’t deal with. The local team receives on-going training to handle a wide range of fluids. Myro is joined by Sales Engineer, Chris Bell; Service and Sales Engineer, Stewart Parks and Service Technician, Paul Wilson.

Myro commented, “We are a here locally to support all industries, we have local expertise, we have the right products for the application, we are cutting edge and we can make a difference. All our pumps are supported by our highly skilled service technicians for your service needs, increasing the lifetime performance of your pump and reducing industry downtime due to breakdowns.” When pump knowledge matters, this is where Kelair excels. THREE GENERATIONS OF JAMIESON BUILDERS; WILL LITTLE MADDISON BECOME THE FOURTH? At 13-months-old she already loves to visit Dad, Adam, on the worksite for smoko. It embraces what AKJ Constructions is all about. A family-owned building business with multi-generational experience providing a personalised building experience. Adam Jamieson learnt the building trade from his father, Alan, who was in the industry for more than 40 years. Alan learnt old-school building craftsmanship from his father, (Adam’s grandfather) before passing this knowledge onto his own son. Adam studied his apprenticeship and become a Registered Master Builder. He continued working for his Dad right up until Alan’s retirement earlier this year. This is when Adam and his wife, Kim, formed AKJ Constructions. Alan was known in the industry as the ‘millimeter man’ and the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. Adam is a perfectionist when it comes to the finer details of the trade, one of the reasons you’ll see him on-site and on the tools daily during any of his builds. “Building a home is a milestone, so we treat it that way. We offer old-fashioned personalised service, starting from the initial consult to find out the wants and dreams of our clients, through to drawing up the plans and then construction through to final handover. Kim ensures the smooth-running of the business behind the scenes with administration, communication with clients and trades, together we make a pretty great team,” Adam said. The couple were both born and bred in Proserpine and met 12 years ago. “We met one night in town. I was fundraising at the time and Adam bought a stack of tickets from me that night. We got talking and the rest is history,” Kim said They haven’t found work life balance to be a problem, with support from both families close at hand. “Maddison overall is a pretty easy baby. She has a fantastic daycare mum, who she really loves going to. We are also very lucky to have both sets of parents nearby to help when we need it,” Kim said. The other crucial member of the AKJ Constructions team is the ever-faithful 10-year-old Staffy, Jules. She goes into work almost daily with Adam, but isn’t the most helpful on the tools. She spends most of her day sleeping, until smoko time when she’s most attentive. She also pesters the delivery men to play fetch with her. PRIME M

eet the two blonde-haired, blue-eyed business babes who could pass as sisters. Sammy Cole and Lauren Matthews didn’t meet in the womb, but at Bootcamp. Sammy had recently moved to Sarina after living for six years on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, while Lauren is a born and bred local. Both ladies had six-week-old babies and were single-mothers, so the bond was instantaneous. “Here we were, training and pushing to make the most out of life, despite being single mums with 6-week-old babies” Lauren said. Sammy is still a fighting single mum of three, (ages 13, 12 and 3) whilst Lauren has found the man of her dreams, and between them both they have 7 children. Sammy is a fitness instructor, qualified life coach and studied the psychology of eating through Hawthorn University. Her passion comes from helping people realise their full potential and guiding them toward finding happiness in life. “At the start, I was that typical in-your-face, go hard or go home kind of instructor. No pain, no gain; that sort of mentality. But after doing it for a while, I realised that’s not the kind of experience I wanted to deliver. “I decided that I wanted to deliver a completely different form of fitness, one which is truly fun. One where your trainer GENUINELY cares about you as a person, and your life, because that is truly where the weight loss comes from; not a 12-week diet,” Sammy said Lauren is the perfect candidate to showcase how Sammy’s fitness theory works. She has lost a total of 25kg since she first arrived at Sammy’s bootcamp. In addition to getting a healthier lifestyle and incredible physique, she also gained a business partner and friend for life. Although she works full-time with Aurizon, Lauren was fully prepared to jump-in and Make Sammy’s Bootcamp EVEN BETTER. It was from here where the friends joined forces and opened up their studio, Prime Fit, 18 months ago. Although the ladies look similar, their personalities are as different as day and night. The dynamic balance of their differences makes them stronger in business. Primefit also places a massive emphasis on mothers feeling WELCOME to bring their children to every workout. They appreciate how hard this can be, and want every mother, even when the baby or toddler is crying, to feel welcome.

FIT “Life can be hard, but just as we have, you need to pick yourself up, keep training and move forward,” Lauren said. While the classes at Prime Fit have become a social success in Sarina, Sammy and Lauren’s ultimate goal is to take their show on the road. They want to deliver fitness-inspired classes within an arena-like show format, accompanied by a kick-ass band and enhanced with motivational speaking. This idea originally was the vision of local music director, Mike Palmer, who directs local band, Stylus Crew. Sammy just happens to be one of the four lead singers. Sammy commented, “It’s a concert that you work out to, with a LIVE BAND performing. I deliver the energy, lead the workout and break it up with some motivational thoughts while being supported by the amazing Stylus Crew. “You have never seen anything like it. Bring your kids, best friends and partner.” Although it’s Sammy who is in the spotlight, she says that she would be nothing without the organisation Lauren does in the background. “Lauren allows me to stand and deliver. She calls herself my ‘hype girl.’ Her organisation and planning is the glue that holds everything together. She’s a perfectionist and everything I’m not, which is why our differing strengths form to make an amazing team. I’m so grateful for her,” Sammy said. The profits from Prime Fit’s events will be donated to Rizeup Australia, a charity organisation dedicated to ending domestic violence through education and empowerment. This charity means a lot to Sammy and Lauren, who see the effect that DV can have on women who come to the studio. Lauren, with the help and encouragement of family, left a violent relationship. She doesn’t like to talk about it, because that’s not who she is. It’s something she went through, but it hasn’t defined who she is today. Experience a fun night of fitness like no other – which will leave you GLOWING. A place to smile through the sweat, enjoy rocking to the beat of a live band and have a laugh with glowsticks and fluro fun. Live your best life, make time for you and leave feeling excited about your future self. Prime Fit’s event will be held at the Sarina Cultural Hall, on Thursday October 17 at 6:30pm. For updates and information, follow Prime Fit on Facebook.

Twelve years ago, Paul and Maree Foote packed their life into a caravan and hit the road to travel around Australia. After owning a successful flooring business in Victoria and leaving their old life behind with two children; their friends and family thought they were a little bit crazy. Little did they know that they would find paradise after 18 months on the road. When they arrived in the Whitsundays, they never left, and a decade after leaving the flooring industry, the couple are now applying their interior furnishings knowledge to a new business, Windwoven Blinds & Awnings.

button, you can pre-program any combination of blinds to open to the exact amount you require, for precision control. This is particularly handy to adjust multiple blinds in an office or home during the day when the sun moves. It simplifies living where there are large or high windows and eliminates hanging cords for a safer environment for pets and children. New builds can be hardwired in, but existing homes can opt for a simple installation with a battery-powered unit, which requires very little charging during the year,” Maree said.

Hitting the ground running, Paul and Maree spent a month with the previous owners of Windwoven Blinds & Awnings, Kevin and Isabelle Hayes, to learn about the business before traveling to Brisbane to complete factory training. Their flooring store in Victoria had expanded over time to include window dressings, so they were keen to build on the industry knowledge they already had.

It’s not just the indoors which benefit from shade solutions. Windwoven specialise in the installation of quality exterior awnings and shutters, providing protection from the elements for outdoor entertaining as well as helping to cool the home. There is a myriad of colour and material options to choose from when it comes to dressing your windows. From room softening sheer curtains to versatile and practical Veri Shades, there is a look and function to suit every space. Paul and Maree can travel to your home to provide a free measure-and quote or bring your building plans into their showroom on Carlo Drive to explore the range of options for yourself. Now that they have discovered their dream lifestyle in the Whitsundays, Maree says the couple aren’t going anywhere. “Quality is important to us because we have to stand behind everything we sell. We only sell products we would be confident to install in our own home and offer the attentive, personalised service you would expect from a family-owned business.” Soften it, block it out or let it flood in. Soaring to great heights in business RELIABILITY WHEN IT COUNTS What does a P-51 Mustang have to do with Benbri Air and Fluid Systems? If you ask owner, Darrell Gibbs, he’ll laugh and say, ‘Well, they have hydraulics, and someone has to fix them.’ Directly, his business doesn’t work with components from old warbird aircraft, but the meaning behind the logo illustrates a picture of reliability and a love of family. The name Benbri itself comes from Darrell’s two children, Benjamin and Britney; and Britney is the inspiration behind the company logo. But we’ll share this story later. Firstly, let’s take a look at what Benbri does.

photography by Caroline Adele www.corelife.com.au 46 46 www.corelife.com.au

In a nutshell, Benbri sell, service, install, hire and audit hydraulic equipment, tools and lubrication equipment as well as service pneumatic equipment. The local business is fully licensed by Queensland Trades and Measures to supply, service and install fueling equipment for fuel and hydrocarbons. Benbri is also the only authorised repair agent for the Hytorc brand of Hydraulic tooling in the Mackay-Bowen Basin area. From the hydraulics and greasing systems on draglines to servicing compressors; there’s not a lot this business won’t do. Benbri’s team of 10 consists of seven technicians, each with a broad knowledge of everything the business handles, but with their own niche of expertise. Three technicians are experienced in pneumatics and bring more than 30 years between them, two are experts in hydraulics and have 40 years of experience, while the other two technicians specialise in hydrocarbons and bring 30 years of experience to the business. Finding the best in the business and retaining good staff has been key to Benbri’s reputation for excellent service. To continually improve on the service delivered by Benbri, all technicians receive upto-date training on all products the business is involved in, so everyone is skilled in all products. Much of the specialised training is provided by the suppliers who are experts in the equipment Benbri sell and service.

Darrell’s own expertise stems from more than 17 years working for a diesel engine company, before transferring to a hydraulic business for seven years. When that business went out of operation, Darrell decided to go it alone, starting Benbri Air and Fluid Systems in 2012. He started from his backyard shed before moving to a site in Malcomson Street, then expanding further to the site they occupy now in Slade Point. While many folded, Benbri thrived and grew during the downturn, illustrating that good service never goes out of fashion. “I believe that if you look after people, they always remember you. That’s been my philosophy from the start. I try to walk in the customer’s shoes and think about what they need for their business to be successful. “It’s also about being respectful and communicating as efficiently as possible. I try to give a customer an answer within 24 hours, and if I can’t, I’ll ring them to tell them why I can’t. There’s nothing worse than leaving someone hanging. We do what we can to live up to customer expectation,” Darrell said. Not only does Darrell have respect for his customers, he treats his team in the same way. “I believe it is important for employees to have a voice and know that they’ve been heard. Their ideas are valuable and each individual effort contributes greatly to the success of the business overall.” I believe in reinvesting into the industry’s future, by offering opportunities for apprentices who are passionate about what we do.” Darrell has managed to continually grow his business while remaining intentionally compact, to offer the standard of service they are known for.

This means they retain quality over quantity when it comes to staff and Darrell is never too busy to personally oversee important aspects of service. This is what the core of Benbri grew from. When customers heard Darrell was going into business for himself, they wanted to follow. “Within a day I already had paperwork signed to become a supplier. Some of those businesses have supported me for more than seven years. Because we hire good people, they bring clients over with them too. The reputation for providing quality repairs and service is what enabled us to grow.” Of course, where would a business be if there weren’t a woman keeping a close eye on the finer details. When Julie McCarthy asked Darrell how his reconciliation was after two years in business, and he replied, ‘What’s a reconciliation?’ That’s when Julie knew he needed help with the paperwork. Her experience in business management and finance from previous positions in Emerald and Mackay set her in good stead to become Darrell’s Administration Manager, looking after the business’ finances, HR, administration and marketing. While the business is small, it is by no means insignificant. In fact, Benbri are heavy hitters in the hydraulic repair industry, with contracts as far afield as Papua New Guinea. They are happy to travel, regularly servicing clients from Rockhampton to Townsville, and west to Longreach.

of the equator, so it’s a completely different environment,” Darrell said. Benbri Air and Fluid Systems are the region’s exclusive distributor for Kaeser Compressors; offering sales, servicing, repairs and hire. From train load-out systems to plant gearboxes, Benbri are for all industry, all workshops. The reliability of the service offered by Benbri brings us back to the meaning behind the logo. Darrell has a passion for warbird aircraft and has flown in a local Mustang on more than one occasion. His daughter, knowing his passion for planes, suggested he used the Mustang as his logo, bringing two passions together. “The Mustang has that reputation on the battlefield for reliability, always being there. That’s what we represent in business. There’s that famous quote in Saving Private Ryan where it was dubbed “The angels on our shoulders” by Captain John H. Miller just before he died. My grandfather was an aircraft mechanic in WW2, maybe that’s where some of the passion comes from,” Darrell said. Benbri understands that its clients’ success relies upon the ongoing reliability and efficiency of their equipment. This is why Benbri is committed to deliver services that meet and exceed those client expectations. visit the team on Lester Hansen Street in Slade Point, visit their Facebook page or go to benbri.com.au for a full list of services.

Sharing special places and shaping lasting memories is the driving desire behind what Cruise Whitsundays strives to achieve with every visitor who sails the Whitsundays. Who better to have at the fore than a man whose career background includes delivering exceptional service to royalty. Shaun Cawood became General Manager of Cruise Whitsundays earlier this year in June. He and his family relocated to Airlie Beach from Natadola Bay in Fiji, where Shaun had been working as resort manager and other senior leadership roles at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa for more than four years.

Shaun Cawood CRUISE WHITSUNDAYS

Shaping lasting memories in special places has been Shaun’s specialty throughout his career. After cruising the world in management roles with Carnival Corporation, Shaun moved to New Zealand to manage a collection of luxury lodges in both the North and South Islands. It was here that Shaun encountered royalty. “I have had the pleasure of looking after a few celebrities throughout my career, most notably the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during a Royal visit to NZ in 2014, they stayed at the luxury lodge I managed at the time. I also met Tom Jones, Bill Gates, Tyra Banks, Kelly Clarkson, Sen. John Kerry all during my luxury lodge days,” Shaun said. The Whitsundays is the perfect location for Shaun and his family. He commented, “I love the ocean and as such enjoy sport and activities such as game fishing, surfing, diving and more recently also sailing. Our family consists of my better half and wife, Kelly whom I met on Cruise Ships in 2002. We have two Children, Daughter Chloe who is 9 and our son Joshua is 6. They love the Whitsundays, our new long-term home, and I enjoy spending time in the outdoors with them.” It is an exciting time for Shaun to join the Cruise Whitsundays team, with the construction of Reefworld, featuring Australia’s first underwater hotel rooms. “Construction is well underway for our launch in November, so this will be a huge focus of the role in the immediate future. At the same time, I am also revisiting our current cruise offerings and looking for ways in which we can introduce enhancements. “I simply can’t think of a more amazing place to showcase than the Whitsundays!” Something you may not know about Shaun… “I view Isadore Sharp, the Founder of Four Seasons Hotel Group, as a mentor. I often think of the following quote and aim to impart the same message when coaching teams: “The reason for our success is no secret. It comes down to one single principle that transcends time and geography, religion and culture. It’s the Golden Rule – the simple idea that if you treat people well, the way you would like to be treated, they will do the same.” www.corelife.com.au 48 48 www.corelife.com.au

La Cucina - the heart of the home GANGEMI CABINET MAKERS Fondness for food and family is ingrained into the Italian culture - Uniting these passions in la Cucina, the heart of the home. It’s where friends gather to converse, where the taste of food comes straight from the heart, and the conversation flows as effortlessly as the wine. Many say it’s his love of the kitchen and passion for family which makes Tony Gangemi more than just a cabinet maker. His ability to visualise the design crafts the perfect solution for every family home, blending aesthetics with function. His passion for cooking has instilled an intimate understanding of how a kitchen should flow, making the most of the space while seamlessly integrating technology and style. It’s little wonder this family-owned cabinet making business has achieved accolades every year for the past decade at the Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builder Awards. The local cabinet making

business took out the Residential Trade Contractor of the Year award, last month for its superior craftsmanship at Funnel Bay. Gangemi’s success is a small glimpse into the hard work and dedication this husband-and-wife team put into their business. Tony and Chanelle went into partnership together in 2007, after Tony took the plunge as a sole trader in 2005. He now has more than 25 years of experience as a cabinet maker; a profession suited to his meticulous eye for detail and drive for perfection. Tony’s parents moved to Australia after the Second World War with his late father spending his earlier years as a cane-cutter in Tully. Tony grew up in Stanthorpe, with his parents owning an apple orchard before retiring. The family grew up with Italian traditions, making sausages and pasta in the family kitchen with his father also making award-winning wine. The passion for food and

wine runs in the family with Tony’s cousin owning a vineyard near Stanthorpe to this day. “We treat every kitchen as our own, ensuring the aesthetic is stylish, yet functional. Tony’s ability to understand every function and maximise space is where the magic happens. As an avid cook himself, he understands the nuances a kitchen can provide the family home. It’s functional, yet warm and welcoming, a place you are drawn into, to gather, connect and celebrate life the Italian way,” Chanelle said. Gangemi’s 2019 Master Builders win is a testament to the quality and service in which these humble cabinetmakers delivers to the family homes, year after year. INVEST IN THE PORT OF AIRLIE LIFESTYLE Australian’s have a love affair and constantly gravitate to the ocean for sport and solace, with boat ownership becoming more and more common for families who love to explore their own backyard. But despite boat ownership increasing, there are few, if any, marina’s being developed along the Eastern seaboard. This is one reason among many why leasing a berth at Port of Airlie is viewed as an investment as well as a wise lifestyle choice. Port of Airlie Consultant and Real Estate Specialist, Andrew Forster, is passionate about how far Port of Airlie has come and excited about its future. He was with Port of Airlie during its inception, living in Airlie Beach for 12 years during its construction and development. His family are all born and bred in North Queensland and the couple moved away for a few years with their young children to be close to family. But when Andrew was presented with an

opportunity to work for the owner’s yet again, he knew it was where he was meant to be.

ability to generate additional income when your boat is at sea.

“What’s not to love. Port of Airlie has achieved so much already, the future plans for expansion are very exciting. It’s a unique model when it comes to marina’s in Australia; with berths available from 10m to 30m. You can purchase an apartment or waterfront land to enjoy when you’re in Airlie, then have direct access to your boat when it’s time to set sail. Retail, restaurants and Cruise Whitsundays on your doorstep; a short stroll to the beach or the heart of Airlie along the boardwalk. There’s no better place in Queensland to be based if you’re a passionate mariner,” Andrew commented.

“We offer a management facility to rent your berth space to other boat users when you are at sea, generating supplementary income. There is a long list of benefits of berth ownership available, including a marina car for ease of provisioning, a concierge facility, a comfortable suite with bathroom, laundry, Wi-Fi, television, coffee making facilities and more. Berth owners receive complimentary car parking spaces and we have a dockhand to assist with berthing vessels. There is a daily security presence and electronic locking system protecting our owners’ assets within the marina,” Andrew said.

The unique advantage of berth ownership at Port of Airlie is an exceptionally rare long-term lease through till 2108. An investment opportunity for generations to use with the added bonus of the

Let’s be honest. It can be hard to pick one lawyer from the next. Most have an essential understanding of many areas of law. But when it comes to deep expertise - earned from real experience - the crowd thins out. There are only a few who can seriously hold themselves out as experts in their field. In criminal law, one such expert is PD Law’s Elizabeth Smith. Even though Elizabeth’s experience in the court room outstrips that of most of her contemporaries, there is of course a lot more to being an effective, expert criminal lawyer, and Elizabeth ticks all the boxes. Not only does she have extensive court room experience, she has deepened her expertise working on both sides of the bar table - acting both for and against the Crown. After several years in private practice Elizabeth took a role as a Civil Prosecutor where, for the next five years, she

Elizabeth and Ali PD LAW

represented the Crown in prosecutions of all kinds from simple traffic matters through to the most serious of criminal offences. “That role really gave me a boost on many levels”, said Smith. “Obviously I amassed a lot of time in court, but my legal knowledge was also tested daily. Every single criminal defence lawyer was trying their best to convince the court that their client should be allowed to walk, and I was doing the opposite. Suffice to say it was incredibly challenging and it gave me a deep knowledge of the Queensland Criminal Code and other pieces of law I may not have achieved in general practice”. Elizabeth is convinced that people incorrectly think they must engage a capital city law firm to get quality criminal law representation. “Yes, it’s disappointing. It’s very hard for a consumer to tell from a 5-minute call whether a lawyer knows the law or not. You need to dig into someone’s reputation and not just hope they know what they’re doing. I

mean, you wouldn’t want a dentist re-setting a broken arm. So, you don’t want a business lawyer trying her hand on a criminal matter at your expense do you? It doesn’t matter how good she is at business law, that won’t help you in the court room. There’s so much at stake here. It’s literally your future. You need to ask your lawyer the question – ‘is this your area of expertise or not?’” Supporting Elizabeth in the criminal law team is Ali Ladd. Ali works almost exclusively in criminal law and more recently in family law. With Elizabeth as a mentor, Ali’s career has been supercharged to the point where she has reached a level of skill and experience beyond her years. “I know I’m lucky to have someone like Elizabeth to learn from. You literally cannot put a price on being able to draw on that sort of experience, in house”. PD Law offers more than just a standard criminal law service. We offer deep expertise and strong experience.

WHAT DID YOU SAY? SPECSAVERS INCLUDES AUDIOLOGY TOO? Did you hear? Audiology testing is now included in a standard eye health check at Specsavers! A one-stop-shop for eyes and ears, patients who get their eyes checked will now also receive free hearing screening as part of the service. Rebecca Moriarty is an Audiology Partner and Audiologist for Specsavers. The hearing specialist visits Specsavers Cannonvale every Thursday to bring expert audiology services to the Whitsundays. Always having a fascination with science, Rebecca began her tertiary education with an undergrad degree in Behavioural Neuroscience at Monash University. While she found the subject fascinating, she wanted to venture into something more people-centred rather than research orientated, so she studied a Masters of Clinical Audiology at the University of Melbourne where she completed her Thesis. She commented, “I find audiology to be the perfect area for me, as I get to balance working with the ever-changing field of technology advancements, as well seeing the change in people’s lives, when you are able to improve their hearing through enriching their communication.” Rebecca grew up on a dairy farm in regional Victoria and knew she wanted to live in a rural or regional area after completing her studies. When an opportunity arose nearly four years ago to move to our region, she chased the sunshine and loves her new home. She joined Specsavers earlier this year and is impressed with the way the business makes the journey easy for customers. “Specsavers prides itself on having the best of things, no matter how small it might be, both for diagnostics and with the quality of hearing aids. Making it affordable for the community means I get to help more people to give them a better quality of life,” Rebecca said. Things you may not know about Rebecca She loves to play AFL and is part of the local Magpies sporting club. She flew her two cats, Izzy and Jangles, up from Victoria to live with her. She bought a house in 2018 and enjoys doing it up or spending time in the garden. She recently spent time trekking in South America through Macchu Picchu, Salt flats as well as endless llama stops. She has a passion for travel; destinations of note include Tanzania, New Zealand for snowboarding, Sri Lanka and Mexico. Specsavers strive to provide all patients with a tailored solution, using the very best equipment combined with cutting-edge technology. Coupled with high clinical standards and a human touch, Specsavers ensures all patients leave with confidence in their senses.

My Gold Medal Winning Weight-loss Journey hree years ago, I embarked on a transformational journey that would change my life forever. But not in ways I had anticipated.

Like many people, I’ve struggled with weight my entire life. Always the fat-but-fit girl, I’ve lived my life achieving athletic prowess despite being overweight. As one of Core Magazine’s journalists, I’ve shared my story before. But instead of focusing on what weight I’ve lost, I wanted to share what I’ve gained. Like many people who lose a large amount of weight, (for me it was 65kg), we eventually hit a plateau. Some can push past it, but I’ve always struggled to get lower than the weight I am today. I’ve maintained this weight for two years, which is a difficult thing to talk about because I’m still very much overweight. Sure, I’m not as overweight as I was three years ago, but I’m still definitely overweight. But, I’ve never let the number on the scales define me as a person, so why should I start now. For me, it’s not the loss that’s important. It’s what I’ve gained. Losing weight gave me the courage to compete in athletics again. It was a sport I loved to compete in as a teenager, so I joined the Mackay Athletics Club as a master’s athlete. Master’s simply means I’m over the age of 30 and people compete in 5-year age group brackets. For the past two years, I’ve achieved so much more than I dreamed possible. I taught myself how to

throw the weight throw and hammer, two disciplines I never competed in as a junior. This allows me to compete in the Throws Pentathlon, an event with five throwing disciplines. I broke local Mackay records and records in other competitions across Queensland. I’ve taken out consecutive master’s state titles; and as I write this article, I’m representing Team Australia in the Master’s Oceania Championships being held here in Mackay. It’s an absolute privilege for Mackay to host this international event, with competitors from all over Oceania as well as the UK, USA, India and even Mongolia in attendance. Two days into the competition, I can now hold my head high and say that I’m a dual master’s Oceania champion; winning both the weight throw and the hammer. I still have four events ahead of me in the coming days; shot put, discus, javelin and then the throws pentathlon; but this edition of Core goes to print before the end of the competition! So, if you see me in the street, or I’m interviewing you for an upcoming article in our next edition, ask me how the rest of the competition went! I’ve witnessed other local athletes win medals in the first two days also, which just goes to show that it’s amazing what can happen when you show up and put your best foot forward on the day. Over the past two years, when it comes to weight loss, I’ve lost absolutely nothing. But, look at what I’ve gained.

MY Cancer Curve Ball I

was told I had bowel cancer at about 6pm on a Monday evening, a few minutes after waking from a colonoscopy at Proserpine Hospital. It felt surreal (mainly because I was still a little drugged from the general anesthetic) but at the same time it managed to hit me like a sledge hammer to my face. All I remember from this moment were my uncontrollable sobs interspersed with questions followed by more questions to the kind, sad eyes of my doctor. I had been experiencing regular stomach cramps for over a year. Looking back, I also had other symptoms that had crept up over time and had become a ‘new normal’ in my life. Exhaustion, bloating, bad gas, oh, and the lump in my stomach. I am pretty diligent about my health and went to the doctors four times during that year. Each

time I was told I was young, healthy and it was probably just my diet or perhaps constipation. There were, however, regular persistent symptoms and a nagging feeling that ‘something just wasn’t quite right’. We have a history of cancer in my family and my dear old nan passed away from bowel cancer at 78. But that was far too old for me to worry about now, right? As my symptoms persisted, I returned to the doctor in July for my 5th visit, this time asking for the full spectrum of tests. It was time to find out what was going on. He ordered a CT scan, blood tests, a poo sample and ovarian ultrasound. I completed them all and was preparing for the sweet relief when science finally confirmed everything was alright. That was until I received

Rachael Smith a text one ‘normal’ Monday morning at 7am as I was getting ready for work. Two of my tests had come back abnormal. Panic flooded my body, I couldn’t breathe and I could no longer focus on any normal morning routine. Everything was frozen until I could speak to the doctor at 8am when the surgery opened. “You have a narrowing in your bowels and blood in your poo,” he said. What did this ‘narrowing’ mean? Could it be cancer? Apparently, it could, but I would need to wait up to 6 weeks before I could get a colonoscopy to find out. The next few weeks of my life went by under a cloud, a smog that settled over my head, where I could no longer enjoy anything. I couldn’t laugh like I normally would, wine didn’t taste as good,

everything had a tarnished, contaminated taste. Finally, four weeks later, I saw the doctor who would perform my colonoscopy. He looked at my chart and booked me in straight away, bumping me to the top of the list. I began to panic even more, why was he rushing so much? By Monday at 1.30pm I was seated in my hospital gown ready to find out, I hadn’t eaten since Saturday night and I hadn’t had a sip of water since 9am. There were huge delays and I wasn’t taken in for the procedure until 5pm. By the time I came out I was depleted of all energy and totally unprepared to hear the words; ‘It’s Cancer’. The next 24 hours were a living hell. Real thoughts of whether I was going to die flooded my brain. I had been walking around with a tumour in my bowel for over 18 months and didn’t know. It was madness, it was crazy, this couldn’t be happening to me. I was 37 for God’s sake, I was a single mum to a two-yearold child. The thought of leaving my son ripped my heart straight out of my chest.

were worried it would block my bowel and I could haemorrhage. Within 48 hours of diagnosis I was driving down to Mackay Base Hospital with a close friend, checking into a hospital room and preparing to have a large chunk of my bowel removed. Simultaneously, my beautiful brother and fiancé were arriving at Proserpine Airport from England for a ‘holiday’ and didn’t know anything! I saw them briefly the following day before I was taken away for the four-hour operation. When I emerged, I had tubes coming out of both hands attached to poles, two tubes coming out of my stomach which administered local aesthetic, a catheter and two large knee length padded socks pumping blood around my body. I was also experiencing the most indescribable pain I had ever had to endure. This went on for six hours until I was considered stable enough to have a self-administering morphine clicker, which was my saviour.

The next day I had to endure another CT scan, I sobbed as the machine scanned my body to detect whether the cancer had spread.

I spent four more nights in hospital and it was astounding how much I improved every day. The next day I could stand and move shakily around, Saturday I started eating soft foods, Sunday they removed the last of the tubes and by Monday I was brought home by my brother.

Fortunately, that same day the doctor called to confirm it was contained within my bowel. The relief made us all cry instantly. Phew! They did, however, want to operate straight away as they

The journey, however, didn’t stop there. Two weeks later and my pathology results were in. They had dissected the tumour and could now confirm I had stage 3b Bowel Cancer. It had

been contained by the bowel but had reached the outer wall and had infected two out of three lymph nodes. This meant that, to ensure they had removed all the cancer and no rogue cells remained, I would need chemotherapy. Six months intravenous chemotherapy. After this, I could expect to return to normal health. As I sit here writing this, three weeks after my operation and three weeks before my chemo starts, I feel the healthiest I’ve been in years. But I know that’s about to change. The chemo will attack my body and kill both good and bad cells. Fortunately, I am seeing an amazing naturopath called Rowena who is the director of Kissun Clinics in Cannonvale. She specialises in Cancer treatments and we will be working in conjunction with the chemo to get my body, mind (and hopefully my hair!) through this journey. You can follow my story and more in-depth account of how I am using both traditional medicine (chemo) with naturopathy (natural remedies, tonics and diet) to beat cancer in regular articles I will share with readers. If anyone is going through a cancer journey and wishes to connect directly with me, I would love to hear from you. In the meantime; check your bits, get second opinions and – if you have a nagging feeling – listen to it!

SUNGLASSES NOW FOR SIGHT IN THE FUTURE

W

e all know the importance of slip, slop slap to protect ourselves from the sun’s UV rays, but many of us don’t understand the importance of ‘wrap’. While we treat our sunnies as a trendy fashion accessory, wrapping on a pair of sunglasses plays a crucial role in protecting our eyesight for years to come. Optometrist, Ryan Cho, from George and Matilda Eyecare explains why it’s important to protect our eyes from the sun. “Prolonged UV exposure can contribute to various eye conditions, of which the most serious is cancer and this can develop inside the eye, on the surface of the eye or on the eyelids and skin around the eyes,” Ryan commented.

HOW CAN WE PROTECT OUR EYES ROM UV EXPOSURE? “All sunglasses which are in line with the national mandatory sunglass standards will have labeling to show the lens category description and usage information. Look for this label when buying sunglasses to ensure your sunglasses provide adequate protection. “Polarised sunglass lenses protect our eyes from additional UV. They are especially good to use around the water as the polarising reduces glare that is reflected off the surface of the water. They are also excellent for driving as the polarising will reduce the amount of glare reflected from the surface of the road, especially after rain. “Non-polarised sunglass lenses reduce the amount of light that enters the eyes and as a

result makes everything look darker to the wearer, but does not cut out a lot of the UV rays which can cause damage.” What are some of the symptoms that indicate our eyes may be getting damaged from the sun? What should we look out for? “A lot of the time, people will not notice damage to their eyes from UV radiation, so it is important to have your eyes checked regularly. Some of the symptoms may be a visible lump on the eye or on the eyelid, or blurry vision.” MAUI JIM PROMOTION When choosing quality sunglasses with polarised lenses, Maui Jim is a great choice. They provide full UV protection, rated up to the high standard of 400nm.

It encourages the use of re-fillable glass packaging for product and is working hard to eliminate all single-use plastics. Its love for the Reef and region is the drive for becoming an eco-friendly and sustainable salon.

As a mother-of-two, Jess utilised her passion for nutrition to give her daughters the best start in life. She educated herself on the hidden toxins and chemicals in a lot of baby products and food and looked further into holistic health. “The combination of being a nature lover at heart, a passion for hairdressing and wanting the best for my children led to the creation of Organica.” Jess is well-known in the Whitsundays for her talent as a hairdresser, using non-toxic, organic products. “I love enhancing natural colour and texture, so clients can enjoy their hair longer, as well as improve the health of their hair with natural products. My favourite product would be Organic Way (Oway) our hair care and colour range. They have their own biodynamic farm in Bologna, Italy where they grow all of their own fruits, vegetables and herbs.” Jess grew up in rural South Australia and moved to Adelaide to complete her apprenticeship. “I fell in love with the arts culture, and always enjoyed the Fringe and Womad Festivals showcasing new and local artistic talents.” Jimmy After losing his father to cancer, Jimmy found a calling to educate himself on the reasons why this disease was becoming more prevalent in the community. His journey led him to holistic healing, where he learnt the art of massage as a tool to reduce stress and negative energy. He started Organica with Jess because of their shared passion for providing non-toxic, beauty and massage services to help people live a healthy, holistic life. Jimmy is passionate about the message Organica delivers “What I love most is that Organica is a step in the right direction for a healthier, non-toxic and organic way of life which is biodynamic and environmentally friendly.” Love your body, love our planet. “I encourage people to educate themselves about what they are putting in and on their body.” Melody Born in the Philippines, beauty therapist Melody has called Airlie Beach home since she was six-years-old. MINDBODYSOUL

Makeover created by Emily Model : World famous author Amo ‘Skye’ Jones Adam & Eve Hair’s mission is to exceed clients expectations and bring experience, style & art to you - starting with your hair.

AFTER

Make me Over! One style at a time, we aim to provide a level of service & care to raise your confidence, raise eyebrows and bring your hair to the next level. We work with you every step of the way to achieve the look you desire. With the latest styles, high-quality products and a passion for what we do – you’re sure to have a truly revolutionary experience.

BEFORE

Our main focus for this makeover was to slightly lighten Skye’s natural hair and to add volume & length to Skye’s hair with extensions.

Colour The colour goal was to give Skye a balayage/ombré effect. To achieve this I did a medium weave balayage ombré through the ends and some soft fine scattered foils to blend through the top.

Styling

Once we reached our desired colour through the ends we applied a creamy/carmel toner to her blonde.

Once the extensions were in, secure & comfortable we used a GHD to create soft waves.

Extensions

Through the crown & parting area we sprayed Eimi Dry Me to assist in backcombing to promote volume & a soft curvature shape.

After we have rinsed, shampooed & lightly conditioned Skye's natural hair with Hydrate wash & finish, we started the process of blowdrying, smoothing & sectioning for the correct placement of our AAA grade human hair extensions. With the extensions, we achieved both length and volume as well as enhancing the blonde. We now have a perfect blend & flow of colour & Skye has a long, full & glamorous look!

With the texture from the curls, you can now see the multi tonal colours throughout Skye's entire hair - both natural & extensions. Finally, we smoothed through some Orifluido Elixir for a radiating shine & smoothness for once again a glamorous look.

Makeup by Lauriely Taylor Loll Doll Make-up

First of all I cleansed Skye’s skin using the micellar water from Garnier. I used the Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Anti-Shine Mattifier as primer. Skye had informed me that she has a normal to oily skin combination. I concentrated the anti-shine primer through her T-Zone. I prepped her eye lids with a M.A.C paint pot and set it using the Youngblood Pressed Powder in warm beige. When creating a makeup look I generally start with the eyes first, this ensures that no fallout will appear on the foundation.

I absolutely love accentuating the eyes, so as soon as I saw Skye’s gorgeous green eyes I knew exactly what colours I wanted to use to make them stand out. To achieve this I chose a Cerise Pink colour from the Anastasia Beverley Hills “Modern Renaissance” palette. I began by applying the “red ochre” to contour her crease and add depth to her eye socket. I then used the “venetian red” and a touch of the “love letter” in the outer corner and along the lash line. I decided to use the Viseart Theory Palette – Nuance, which has a gorgeous rose/pink shimmer. I placed this on the middle of her eye to add an extra pop. I lined her top lash line with black gel liner from one of my favourites by Erin Bigg Cosmetics called onyx gel liner. On the lower waterline/tightline I used a green eye liner “dubai” from Napolean.

Full head of AAA grade tape extensions, style of your choice & full after care consultation The lashes were a combination of long and medium individual lashes by Ardell. These were placed all along the lash line to create length as well as fullness.

from $650

With our emerging stylist Emily McKean

Her foundation I Airbrushed on using the Element 2 foundation in a combination of colours to ensure her correct shade. I contoured/ highlighted with both the airbrush foundation and powder compact from Viseart Paris. On her cheeks I used a gorgeous pink/peach blush from Too Faced Cosmetics. For her lips I decided to use a colour that would further enhance her eyes. I chose the “rose” lipliner and “envy” lipstick from Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. I set her foundation with Element 2 setting powder. I used the Skindanavian setting spray to set her entire makeup.

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO GET IN THE RING T

he Australian Masters Games is a biennial sporting event that is regarded as one of the premier participation sporting events on the Australian sporting landscape. In October, the Games will be hosted in Adelaide, where it is expected more than 8,000 participants will compete across 51 different sports. Representing the Whitsundays are a group of blokes who love to box. From differing backgrounds, their passion to rumble in the ring is what brings them together. The crew from Whitsunday Martial Arts train a minimum of five times per week in preparation for this prestigious competition. Four of the five men have already fought in local competitions. After performing beyond their own expectations, the guys collectively agreed that the Australian Masters Games was the ultimate way to step up their fitness and form as they get ready for the biggest fights of their lives. The youngest of the Master’s crew is Blair Frew who will be competing in the ‘Elite Masters’ category, which is the youngest category in the Masters Boxing Event for 34 – 40-year-olds. He is experienced from

years of competing in various other forms of martial arts, but has recently turned to boxing because of a persistent knee injury. The other men in the team competing in the Elite Master’s category are Trent Elson and Chris Smith. Trent is no stranger to competition having been involved with the local rugby team for many years and has fought for WMA in local competitions. He started boxing for off-season rugby training. Chris turned to boxing for weight loss and has lost an impressive 50kg’s in 18 months. He signed on purely for a personal challenge but now is hooked. He’s an inspiration and a walking example of what hard work and determination can achieve. Carle Parkhill will compete in the 45 – 50 age category and joined WMA in late April. After only a few months training he has dropped over 10kgs on a steady approach to reaching his fighting weight. He runs two businesses but still fits several training sessions in per week and has completely flicked the questionable nutrition habits that come with being a tradie and a publican in his day jobs. This will be Carle’s first fight experience.

Rounding out the team is Nick Wynne Jones. Nick started with WMA in a 12-week challenge and found a passion for boxing which led to his first fight earlier this year. What started out as a ‘bucket list’ idea of jumping in the ring has translated into an exciting approach to the Australian Masters Games. Coaches Anton Zafir and Dan Zealand have been putting the lads through their paces; with strength and conditioning exercises, personal training sessions, compulsory sparring sessions and skills classes to work on technique and tactics. Dan said, “Anton and I are hoping they lap up the moment and do themselves proud after the many months of preparation and sacrifice they’ve all endured. Every single one of them gives their absolute all in training and all that we ask of them in preparation. We hope we’re in the shape these guys are in when we reach their age!” If you have a desire to step up and step into the ring, visit Whitsunday Martial Arts in Cannonvale to punch above your weight. www.corelife.com.au 71

With A Big Heart A stretch of coastline from Hay Point to St Lawrence is perfectly poised to offer visitors serenity. Known as the Serenity Coast, at its heart, the country town of Sarina offers picturesque views of scenic mountain ranges, sparkling swimming beaches, intimate nature encounters and unique agricultural experiences.

HOW DID SARINA GET ITS NAME?

A 25-minute drive south of Mackay, its beautiful beaches and quaint cafes makes Sarina a desirable day-trip destination; providing warm hospitality, sweet sugar cane delights and historical attractions.

Dreaming of the past? Take a step back in time at the Field of Dreams.

Well, history tells us how but we don’t really know why. The town is named after Sarina Inlet which was named by a surveyor, William Wilson, who did not state why he chose the name. Speculation is it may have been named after a Greek mythological enchantress.

The Field of Dreams is a historical and educational park displaying finely restored period buildings. The Sarina Tourist Art and Craft Centre is a Visitor Information Centre located in the ‘Old Sarina Court House’, built in 1906. Discover a rich era of gold mining, sugar and coal at the Historical Centre, formerly St Anne’s Catholic Convent. The Sarina Museum building was built in 1923 and opened in November that year as a presbytery for the Catholic Church in Sarina, or visit the Yukan Art Gallery, transformed from the old Yukan Station. Beside the Field of Dreams, you’ll find a sweet surprise. From humble beginnings to one of Queensland’s top tourism destinations, the Sarina Sugar Shed is an iconic visitor experience in Sarina offering both education and delicious delicacies. This multi award-winning attraction contains Australia’s only miniature sugar mill and distillery.

SNAP A SELFIE WITH ONE OF QUEENSLAND’S BIG ICONS Keep an eye out for ‘Buffy’, the giant cane toad sculpture in the middle of Sarina. Buffy’s name is derived from his scientific name, Bufo Marinus. If coal stokes your curiosity, don’t miss the chance to visit one of the longest coal loading jetties in the world at Hay Point. The Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Jetty stretches an impressive 3.8km in length. The Port of Hay Point services a large number of the Bowen Basin coal mines. Find the lookout off Hay Point Road for a great view of the facility, complete with information boards about our region’s coal industry.

MUST DO Take a morning stroll along one of Sarina’s golden beaches; including Sarina Beach, Grasstree Beach, Salonika Beach, Armstrong Beach and Freshwater Point. Keep an eye out for nesting turtles in season, who lay their eggs among the grassy dunes. Nesting sea turtles come ashore at night from October through to January to lay their eggs; while the hatching turtles usually leave their nests between January and March. Sarina Beach is fringed by an esplanade park with barbecue facilities. Enjoy a meal overlooking the coastal vista at a beachside bar and grill. Stay oceanside overnight and enjoy sunset cocktails with a sweet sea breeze. A unique nature experience for budding ornithologists. Lake Barfield, which adjoins Salonika Beach, is a thriving bird sanctuary; home to black swans, white herons and egrets.

owned the motel for more than a decade and have raised their four boys there; Rylee, Haiden, Declan and Jimmy. “We came to Sarina Beach from Caloundra with our two young boys in tow, Rylee 2 years and Haiden 9 months at the time. We certainly hit the ground running, being new to this industry we certainly learnt on our feet and juggled the kids in-between,” Meaghan laughed. Meaghan and Darren are the motel’s second owners, many in the community remembering original owner, Phillip Cosgrove. Parts of his legacy remains throughout the bar; Phil’s father hand-made a replica of the Endeavour and other miniature ships in bottles, displayed on the walls. There is also a gyroscope from a WW2 Japanese Submarine, and an old engine room telegraph repeater, but be warned, if you ring this it’s your shout! The couple love to travel throughout Australia and the restaurant showcases a collection of photos Meaghan has taken on her travels. Meaghan is also the creator of the Sarina Beach Coconut Festival, an initiative she started in 2016 to boost morale in the community.

A prickly predicament transformed into pineapple perfection. One of the greatest experiences you will uncover at the Sarina Sugar Shed is a collection of tasty tales about how some of the delicious sauces and ice creams were concocted. The newest addition to the range of Chefs Gusto Sauces, Pineapple Sweet Chilli Sauce, is no exception. One of the tour guides, Trudy O’Rourke, was given a hot tip by a visitor who had tried a pineapple sweet chilli sauce. At the same time, local pineapple farmer, John Zelenka, was facing heartbreak as rain had ruined a large portion of his crop. So, coordinator Glenys Mansfield struck up a collaboration and the ladies in the kitchen began cooking, resulting in a new product hitting the shelves. The sweet, sticky combination of local pineapple and Queensland chilli has become a new fan favourite.

Meet some of the team who make the Sarina Sugar Shed a sweet place to visit Robert Spark Some will remember Robert from his days captaining on the cricket field, while others will know him for the 42 years he spent working with the rail. But despite being retired, Robert Spark legacy is fast becoming the cream of the crop. Robert is the maker of the oh-so-creamy Mooscoop ice cream. As a volunteer at the Sarina Sugar Shed, he found his calling behind-thescenes, crafting the sweet treat. He had never made ice cream before, but was a quick learner. “We offer flavours which aren’t commonly found in the supermarket; and we utilise ingredients which are as local as possible, including Freckle Farm eggs. Our flavours include the likes of choc-cherry, spearmint, jaffa, rum liquor and licorice. “I never would have thought 20 years ago that I’d be making ice cream,” he laughed. Robert married a local girl from Sarina and they have been living in the same family home here since 1976. They have travelled the world frequently since Robert’s 50th birthday when he realised that life is too short not to live it to its fullest.

where life tastes sweet A celebration of our sweet heritage Lorelle Simonsen After many years running a local business in Sarina, Lorelle Simonsen couldn’t sit still in retirement. local produce as possible means each batch takes on its own taste. This adds to the boutique feel of what we do. There is honesty in our product by sourcing ingredients close to home, staying true to what we deliver and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Originally crafted by local Chef, John Walker; Sarina Sugar Shed’s Chef Gusto sauces have become pantry favourites across our region and beyond. Lorelle and Debbie Westwood are the volunteers who keep the flavour alive.

You couldn’t get closer to home than using limes grown from the Sugar Shed’s own trees to make its delicious Lime Sweet Chilli. Mangoes are grown near Grasstree Beach, pineapples from near Hay Point and tomatoes from Bowen.

Lorelle enjoys the constant challenge of ensuring each batch tastes delicious.

When she isn’t cooking up a storm at the Sugar Shed, Lorelle enjoys tending to her rose trees or spending time with her sons and granddaughters.

“I follow the others around with a spoon asking them to taste-test everything,” she laughed. “Our sauces are unique, being artisanal and utilising as much

Betty Burrows Dedicating her life to a career in sugar, many would say that some of the sweetness has rubbed off onto Betty Burrows. Not only is she one of the enthusiastic tour guides whom the visitors love, but she spent many years working at the Sarina Sugar Mill as a control chemist and analysing quality. She brings a wealth of knowledge about the processing aspect of the sugar, but says she gets a kick out of the visiting farmers who share their stories about the growing aspect.

Roberta Brown and Trudy O’Rourke The Sarina sister-act, born and bred locals Trudy and Roberta bring a passion for people to their tours. Both are tour guides at the Sarina Sugar Shed after lengthy careers working with people. Roberta spent more than 20 years in retail, while Trudy had a career in banking. They both love that they can utilise their people-skills in a fresh and fun way, meeting people from all over the world daily. Trudy was the first to work at the Sarina Sugar Shed, starting four years ago. “There isn’t a day where you don’t smile. I remember from a recent tour, a bloke at the end of it had fairy floss in one hand and a nip of rum in the other, and commented ‘what else could a man want.’ Another memorable moment was when a young boy, who was probably too young to understand most of the tour, ran up to me at the end and gave me the biggest hug. I’ll never forget that,” Trudy said. Roberta loves to showcase our region to

“One of the farmers who came through on the tour was so impressed with the experience that they came back and donated an old leaf stripper to our machinery collection. We have a great rapport with the growers, it’s so important to learn their side of the story which adds to the experience for all of our visitors.” One of Betty’s most memorable experiences from being a tour guide was receiving a stack of letters and artwork from a group of Year 5 students from a local school who had enjoyed the fun educational tour.

visitors and make each tour memorable with education as well as humour. “Watching a group really enjoy themselves while learning about our local sugar heritage is a great feeling. When you get spontaneous claps and hugs, you know you’ve delivered above expectation, and that’s what it’s all about,” she said. Trudy and her husband love to travel frequently, which Trudy says adds to the experience she can give as a tour guide. “When I have someone on tour from a part of the world I’ve been to, I can build a rapport with them and make them feel that extra bit special.” Roberta and her husband are keen on fishing in their tinny; whether out in the ocean on a calm day, dodging the whales during whale migration season, or closer to shore prawning or catching red claw and crabs. “We live in an area where there is an abundance of seafood. I often say to people that the best place for seafood in the region is my own kitchen,” she laughed.

- Airlie Beach Festival of Music brings stellar headline acts What could be “better than” John Butler performing at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 8-10? For some fans seeing this blues and roots legend will be the highlight of the festival’s seven years to date. For the man himself, ‘JB’ is looking forward to “going with the flow”. “I’ve been lucky to play a lot of great places over the years and I look forward to seeing what the vibe is like (in Airlie Beach),” he said. “For me the most important thing is connection with the audience; I remember that more than anything else to be honest, so I hope the audience wanna bring their ‘A- game’ like I do.” Known for his ‘Sounds of the Reef’ project with its environmental focus on the Great Barrier Reef, Butler says he appreciates all that the Whitsunday community has done to protect and preserve the natural treasures on its doorstep. “It’s nice to play to family who hold the same core values – feels like sometimes you can drop deeper more quickly,” he said. “But I really enjoy playing to all types; I’m playing solo so it’s different but essentially the energy is the same (and) you can expect me to be having fun at the very least.” Joining him on the line-up for 2019 is Mama Kin Spender, consisting of Butler’s wife

Bon But Not Forgotten

Danielle Caruana and long-time friend Tommy Spender. Daughter to an icon, Mahalia Barnes will also grace the idyllic waterfront main stage setting at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Meanwhile AC/DC fans are in for a treat, with ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’ described as the closest anyone can get to the real thing. Featuring a knock-out line-up, including past members of AC/DC and Aussie rock icons The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Wolfmother, this band knows how to electrify a crowd with its explosive repertoire of AC/DC's greatest hits. Making history at the festival for a second consecutive year will be the ‘Airlie Beach All Stars’, consisting of Nicky Bomba, Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde. Fans who saw the trio’s impromptu performance in 2018 after Smash Mouth lead-singer Steve Harwell was forced to retire, say it was pure musical magic. Festival founder, Gavin Butlin, said the return of these artists, along with speed-painter Bob Gammage, and comedian Steady Eddy, would complete what was possibly the festival’s strongest line-up yet. “To be bringing John Butler to Airlie Beach is massive, not to mention the fact we’ve got Smokie coming from the UK, a true blue icon in John Williamson, the big names in the Australian Rock

Collective, Australia’s most recognised Indigenous band Yothu Yindi and the Treaty Project, and also the Superjesus,” he said.

Tickets are now on sale via OzTix, BigTix, Whitsunday Tickets, The MECC and direct from airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au. For all the latest news, follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

rom performing at bowls clubs and casinos to private functions and events; Stylus Crew is one of the most diverse bands you’ll find in Queensland. And that’s the way the band loves it. While a lot of bands will home in on one main genre, Stylus Crew is intentionally eclectic, allowing it to deliver crowdpleasing style and sound. It doesn’t matter if you like Prince or the Fresh Prince, Stylus Crew can deliver. The band was formed by local muso, Mike Palmer, who wanted to bring some Melbourne swagger back to his home town of Mackay. On the cover of this edition of Core Life, you would have seen the fitness chicks,

Sammy explains that the performance is all about helping people to enjoy their workout, turning it into the exciting atmosphere of a live concert. “It’s like nothing else! We sing, deliver the hype, motivate and inspire people to become the best they can be. But it’s also about having a lot of fun. It’s all here at Port of Airlie Few locations boast a position as phenomenal as Port of Airlie. Being one of the most desirable locations in the Whitsundays, you can drink in marina views while sipping on a martini; whilst you are only a short walk from the action of Airlie Beach, yet feel a world away when indulging in a luxurious spa treatment. Top off a day on the water from your apartment balcony whilst enjoying sweeping views of the Coral Sea. Wake to the aroma of an Italian coffee, taste gratifying gastronomy from a selection of restaurants then browse through the fashion and homewares at a range of cosmopolitan retail boutiques.

As a Mackay local, I know how lucky I am to live within a short drive of worldrenowned tourism destinations. Few destinations offer as many inclusions and attractions as you’ll find at Port of Airlie. After experiencing a weekend firsthand, I discovered a place where everything I could possibly want was close at hand. With a warm Whitsunday welcome from the Mantra Boathouse Apartment team, I was made to feel at home from the moment I arrived. The team ensured everything was in place for a memorable stay. Mantra Boathouse Apartments offers contemporary two- and three-bedroom apartments, fully self-contained with all the comforts of home. As I opened the door, I was immediately drawn by the airy, spacious layout and the heavenly blue view straight off the balcony. I was drawn outside to take in the pictureperfect panorama. The warm sea breeze beckoned me to put my feet up on the balcony lounger and take a moment to decompress. Holiday-mode had begun. Sunsets are beautiful here, as the sun drops, the marina turns from the Whitsunday turquoise blue to a brilliant shade of orange, glowing as the last bit of

light from the day slips behind the hill. When I said the apartment included all the comforts of home, let me clarify, the kitchen is actually better than my kitchen at home. A solid stone island is the focal point for all your food prep, everything else you could need is provided for you to cook up a feast for family and friends. A large bath provides the perfect place to soak, reminisce and recharge for another day in paradise. What else I loved about Mantra Boathouse Apartments Unwind on the sun deck then take a dip in the resort-style pool. Use the outdoor cooking facilities if you fancy poolside dining. Soak in the spa after a game of tennis on Mantra’s private tennis court. Let the kids burn off energy at Mantra’s own children’s playground. Enjoy air conditioning throughout the apartment and multiple ceiling fans ensure yearround comfort. Free, secure parking in the underground carpark with easy elevator access to rooms. A short walk from the Cruise Whitsundays terminal providing incredibly easy access to the Whitsunday Islands. Plus, it’s a short stroll to beautiful Boathaven Beach, where the locals love to chill. It’s so close to town and the famous markets, an easy stroll along the boardwalk.

Destination dining at Port of Airlie Shortly after sunset, I strolled down from my apartment to scope out the options for dinner. Seafood, Modern Australian, Italian; I could take my pick without leaving the marina. I opted to try Fishbar as I had it on good authority that the seafood is so fresh it tastes as though it leapt from the Coral Sea straight onto your plate. This experience exceeded all my expectations. Mouth-watering dishes, elegantly presented, were bursting with flavour. Freshly shucked oysters, large prawns, salt and pepper calamari and fish tacos were just a few of the inclusions on the restaurant’s signature platter. Paired with a bottle of wine and live music, the waterfront ambience was both relaxing and memorable. The Fishbar is open for lunch and dinner, and offers live music on Saturday evenings. Room service is available if you are staying at Mantra Boathouse Apartments, and takeaways are a great option if you feel like a delicious seafood picnic. The rumours are true, the seafood was amazing, however, the diverse range of options on the menu impressed me even more. The seafood is sourced locally, you can taste the quality and freshness in every bite. What a way to end a perfect day. After a sensational sleep (honestly, the beds are incredible), I woke to the aroma of fresh Italian espresso on the waterfront. Breakfast at La Marina is available as an inclusion when staying at Mantra Boathouse Apartments. Feeling a little indulgent, I couldn’t go past the crepes with fresh strawberries. Deliziosa! My morning of indulgence had only just begun. My next destination was Vartamana Yoga and Day Spa; a relaxing retreat which encourages guests to enjoy some self-care by enjoying yoga and spa rituals for both health and wellness. With the extensive treatment menu; including spa, beauty and massage services; there is a promise of a sensory experience which will leave you feeling incredible. My treatment included a body scrub, a heavenly massage and a therapeutic facial. Owner and massage therapist, Leah, delivers treatments with a decade of experience, evident as I felt the stress and tension melting from my muscles. I was relaxed and my skin was incredibly soft as I floated out the door feeling refreshed and renewed. Retail therapy I never pass up the opportunity for a wardrobe update, so I popped into Billabong and Salty Kisses to check out the range of resort wear. I love the Seafolly brand, and with Salty Kisses offering the latest in fashion trends, a new top was a natural addition for my wardrobe. The fashion and accessories are tailor-made to the tropical climate, designed to blend with the Whitsunday style while being cool and comfortable enough to enjoy a day exploring the islands, reefs and beaches. It really is all here, at Port of Airlie. For more information about the marina or to make a booking please visit portofairlie.com.au
