Welcome to February, the month of love, and it seems that everyone loves the changes and new additions we have made to CORE Life. It’s nice to get recognition for the hard work you put into the things you are passionate about. Sometimes all we need is a thank you, you have done an amazing job or a simple acknowledgement of noticing the little efforts that are put in. For me, Valentine’s Day is a day to do exactly that. Dish out some good old fashioned appreciation to your husband, wife, children, mum, dad, friends and family and even your employees. It’s so easy to take for granted the people who really care for you, and those who will be there for you when others aren’t. For me, I need to thank my amazing husband and son, who have stood by me through so much, my sister Racheal who has always believed in me, my amazing friends who I can go weeks and even months without seeing or speaking to, but are always there, and last but not least the amazing crew at CORE Life, who have held on tight for the ride and are the reason this publication exists. On that note, I would like to welcome Anna Malahoff to the team. Anna has taken on the Area Sales Manager role and will be looking after all our clients in the Mackay region. We know you are going to love her! Enjoy Reading!

MEET COURTNEY AND NICK

People freely use the term ‘living the dream’, however not many can truly claim to be. Courtney Ganderton and Nick King are two of the lucky few. As breakfast radio presenters, the duo are fortunate enough to go to work every day and thoroughly and enthusiastically love their job. Nick has recently moved from Dubbo in NSW to join Courtney as the HOT FM Breakfast anchors, having worked for Southern Cross Radio in Dubbo for over two years, Nick jumped at the chance to venture north. “I love Mackay, it’s really pretty up here and it’s great to be near a beach,” Nick said.”Even if you can’t swim in the beach, it’s still a nice change from Dubbo.” The pair start their day at 4am, arriving at the studio ready to go live by 5am. “I’m the nanna nap Queen,” Courtney said. “We couldn’t survive without our afternoon snoozes, the early knock off allows us to do that and being that we work 6 days a week, naps are essential,” Nick said. “Our job is very social, seeing us do promotional work at nightclubs and other events on weekends,” Courtney said. “We have so much fun doing what we do and being able to play the latest music and talk to celebrities are also pluses.” When asked who they would like to interview, Courtney responded, “Bruce 8 www.corelife.com.au

Springsteen. I’m actually taking March off to follow him around while he’s here on tour, I’m doing it on my own accord, not at all work related. I’d also like to interview Taylor Swift to find out what’s up with her choice in men.” “I’d like to interview Taylor Swift too,” Nick said. “Just to show her that not all men are worthy of a break up song.” Talking to Courtney and Nick, it’s easy to see they whole heartedly have a passion for what they do, conversation alone brings a smile to your face. To keep up with their antics tune in to 100.3 FM from 5am weekdays.

US FISCAL CLIFF’S SOFT LANDING

HEALTH

2013 Smartphones that can be used as credit cards, virtual medical checkups and remote home monitoring using a personal device are some of the exciting technologies expected to take off in 2013, according to Dr Hugh Bradlow, Telstra Chief Technology Officer.

CHINA INSISTS ON PEGGING THE YUAN TO THE US DOLLAR AND HAS GENERALLY REJECTED US PRESSURE TO REVALUE WHICH WOULD INCREASE THE COST OF CHINESE PRODUCTS AND DECREASE THE COST OF US GOODS IN CHINA. The solution for the US is to print money, (defacto devaluation of the US$) and increase inflation thus reducing debt in real terms for not only the Federal Government but consumers in general. Apart from the fact that the US$ is still generally the world’s preferred Reserve Currency, the rate of inflation in the USA has been far less than expected. This can largely be explained by what Keynes called the “paradox of thrift”. Keynes pointed out that in times of economic distress an individual may respond by reducing spending and increasing savings. However, if everyone does the same thing, distress becomes even worse because aggregate demand is destroyed which can cause businesses to close and unemployment to rise. To put this in perspective the US now talks of its deficit in $trillions, not $billions. Many annalists predict the US will add another four trillion to their deficit over the next decade. CONSIDER: • A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive. • A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the stone-age. • The US is spending a billion dollars approximately every 13 hours. The citizens of US, like the citizens of Australia, are not as stupid as Governments like to think. It is due to their concerns with the policy of just printing money to pay debt that has caused “the paradox of thrift”. This might seem a cynical view of world affairs, but in my opinion the US deliberately created the “bogie man” of the “Fiscal Cliff” so that they could convince the US public that they are finally acting responsibly and thus encourage people to start spending again.

Telstra has outlined the top ten tech trends that are expected to gather a foothold in consumer, business and enterprise markets for 2013. 1. Big News of the Year: the Mobile Wallet takes off. Allowing customers to take advantage of some retailers’ plans to roll out contactless terminals which will turn mobile phones with NFC capability into virtual credit cards. 2. Old News of the Year: Cloud computing continues to accelerate. The explosive growth of consumer devices, such as tablet PCs and smartphones, along with platforms such as Microsoft Windows 8, will probably drive even more users to embrace the cloud. 3. Hype of the Year: Big Data. “Opens the door to a new approach to engaging customers and making decisions based on insights gained from data analytics,” Dr Bradlow said 4. Journey of the Year: Use of Information Communications Technology takes off in the health, transport and mining industries. Imagine a world where you can book a medical appointment online and then engage in a video consultation with your doctor! 5. Hope of the Year: Use of sensors in smart infrastructure, health and intelligent transport systems. Expansion of innovative technologies that will ultimately allow the measurement and rapid analysis online of everything from blood flow and heart health to calorie counts. 6. Promise of the Year: the Connected Home will become a reality. Empowering connected solutions, such as remote monitoring of the home via smartphone, will become more pervasive 7. Achievement of the Year: Rapid growth in LTE (4G) coverage and adoption. One of the fastest growing radio technologies yet introduced will continue to bloom in 2013. 8. Opportunity of the Year: Battery life starts to improve. Improvements to battery life will be driven not just by bigger batteries but also network efficiencies to optimise power usage

This looks like working with an end result of increased inflation worldwide.

9. Big Transition of the Year: Software goes mass market. Global accessibility to cloud based software distribution will turn the traditional way of doing business on its head.

10. Surprise of the Year: Speech Recognition. 2013 could see developers begin to seriously incorporate speech recognition into apps and other software.

THE

WORKHORSE TOYOTA HILUX HAS LONG BEEN AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE ACTION UTILITY VEHICLE. WITH A REPUTATION FOR BEING AN UNBREAKABLE WORKHORSE, YOU CAN PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT, BUT IT KEEPS COMING BACK FOR MORE. NO WONDER IT’S KNOWN AS THE 4WD THAT BUILT AUSTRALIA. The VVT-i petrol or gutsy turbodiesel engines pack a real punch without compromising reliability or efficiency. With responsive handling, you’re always firmly in control, from tight corners in city streets to vast open deserts. HiLux is built to handle anything your location throws at it with its array of intelligent technologies. Big on safety, it has an energy-absorbing front chassis structure and strong Safe-T-Cell, helping take impacts from all angles on the chin. ABS (Anti-skid Braking System) is standard on all models and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) in the SR5 Double-Cab 4x4 models to help stability by automatically adjusting engine output and the braking force of each wheel when the vehicle experiences over steer or under steer during cornering. HiLux’s TRC function (Traction Control) controls the wheel spin, when starting 12 www.corelife.com.au

or accelerating on slippery or uneven road surfaces and the NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) shields you from whatever chaos is going on around you. With a clever mix of high tensile and anti-corrosion sheet steel, the body is as tough as they come, with a rigid design that takes the strain, whatever you load it with. It’s built to go the distance. Less wear and tear means less maintenance in the long-run, making the HiLux great value for money. One thing’s for sure, there’s a HiLux that’s perfect for you. Your challenge is to choose from thirty-five variations. From 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, three different engines, which includes a 2.7 litre 4 cylinder, 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine and the turbocharged 3.0 litre diesel engine featuring Electronic Direct Injection, along with a choice of cab variants and eight different colours.

The Toyota Hilux is available now for a test drive at Central Highlands Auto. Central Highlands Auto is a proud distributor of Toyota, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Great Wall vehicles, ensuring a full range of vehicles to meet all specifications and budgets. Ideally situated on Hospital Road, Emerald, the highly trained staff at Central Highlands Auto can assist you with all of your new vehicle needs. for the boys TOURNAMENT FISHING IS AN EXCELLENT WAY OF TESTING YOUR FISHING SKILLS AGAINST OTHER LIKE-MINDED ANGLERS. ADD IN THE CHANCES OF CATCHING GENUINE TROPHY FISH AND SHARING GOOD YARNS AT THE END OF THE DAY IN A VERY SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE, MAKES TOURNAMENT FISHING SOMETHING I WOULD RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE.

Most people think that game and sportfishing is for only the rich and famous but this is not true at all. A smart operator in a 5mtr tinnie has just as much chance of catching a trophy fish as a team onboard a fullblown 40ft game boat! Firstly, tournament fishing is all about fishing under certain rules, which puts all anglers on the same level. Normally this will be line class regulation where all anglers can only use up to a certain breaking strain of line. This is where the sporting side comes in to it and if you hook a big fish on light line, you can’t just “scull drag” them in, you need to use skill and patience and often clever boat driving to wear them down to either tag and release or make a capture. Successful tournament fishing comes down to several things but good preparation goes along way to being competitive. Game fishing in general is a team sport so it’s great to check the gear and talk through tactics as a team for best results. All your outfits should be checked out prior to the tournament. Reels are best if they are re-spooled with fresh pretested line to ensure old line has not deteriorated and could possibly fail when hooked 16 www.corelife.com.au

on that “trophy fish”. All knots should be double checked and retied if not perfect and all the reel’s drags should be double checked for settings also. As mentioned earlier, even small boats can win prizes. There are usually separate categories for boats under and over 7mtrs (some tournaments it may be 8mtrs). Boats still do need to be set up well with a spread of rod holders for trolling and amongst other things they must be reliable sea boats to get you out and back! Most tournaments will be run under a game fishing club, which are usually affiliated with a governing body. Here in Qld that is the Queensland Game Fish Association. Normally to enter a tournament you will have to be a part of a club or organisation under the QGFA. This allows anglers the opportunity to be awarded points for captures or tags and also to claim record fish. Locally here we have the Whitsunday Gamefish Club and the Mackay Gamefish Club. Both clubs are affiliated with QGFA. The most popular tournament locally would be the WGFC Light Tackle Gamefish Tournament, which is usually run in October each year. There

are always between 100-150 anglers competing each year, which makes for a great fishing and social event. Target species include juvenile Black Marlin, Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel, Trevally, Tuna, Wahoo and Dolphin fish, just to name a few. The tournament goes for 3 days with the presentation on the evening on the last day. This event is open to everyone, not just the guys! Great prizes are given away to the females and the children as well as the guys in several different categories each year. With the champion team winning the major prize. The best way to get involved is join your local club where you can learn all about game/sportfishing. This will have you ready this coming season when the game fish are thick to enter the local tournament. You will be able to test your skills and maybe take home a prize and have a whole lot of fun at the same time! Ashley Matthews - Sea Fever Sportfishing Whitsundays

To help get you in the mood, CORE Life spoke to World Champion Wakeboarder James Windsor who says anyone can have a go..... And, he’s promised to give locals some personal attention as he heads our way for regular coaching sessions with would-be wakers. Q: How did you get into wakeboarding? A: I started motocross riding at age three, and I rode basically every weekend until I was 13 when I had a big crash and had to have a bit of time off. One day I went with my school to the local cable Wakeboard Park at Bli Bli (Sunshine Coast) and fell in love with the sport there and then. I eventually got a job there and rode every day. Q: What’s an average week look like for you? A: I would do 30-40 hours per week on the wakeboards. I’m always trying to get everything as consistent as possible so I can land every trick, every time. I just love being there and you can’t get me off the water, I love it that much. Q: Can you tell us how a wakeboard competition works? A: Basically it works likes a surf competition, you go out there and they put four riders on the water and you have 4-6 minutes to do as many tricks as you can. Q: As world champion, you must have a lot of work to do this year to keep the title? A: I have 22 competitions this year and will be travelling to 27 countries. There’s a lot of travel and it’s (wakeboarding) one of the fastest growing sports in the world, especially in America and Europe, Australia is slowly catching on. Q: Any advice for first time wakers? A: Pretty much anyone can try it. I’ll be out there, and so will others, to help you get started. It’s really easy to learn and a great sport to get into. 22 www.corelife.com.au

isaac feature FROM NATURAL FRESHWATER LAKES SURROUNDED BY PICTURESQUE PICNIC SPOTS, TO THE HEART OF THE NATIONAL MINING INDUSTRY IN THE BOWEN BASIN, THE DIVERSITY OF THE ISAAC REGION HAS ATTRACTED THOUSANDS FOR ITS RICH LANDS AND OPPORTUNITIES. The vast history, landscape, various industries and opportunities combined with a strong community spirit, has made the region one of the most attractive places to live in Queensland. The Mayor of Isaac Regional Council, Anne Baker, is firmly committed to sustaining this reputation and ensuring the community continues to thrive. The former netballer, who even has a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport under her belt, told CORE Life of her love for the Isaac lifestyle and her commitment to addressing the housing issues in her community. Q: Before becoming Mayor in 2012 you had spent five years on Council, what was the driver for you to enter local politics in 2007? A: No particular issue. I was given an opportunity to represent the community on the Council and I took it with an open mind and not really aware of how Council operated. Q: You’ve lived in Moranbah for more than 15 years, what changes have you seen over that time? A: There have been numerous changes-some good, some not so good. The major increase in non-residents compared to permanent residents has been an issue and probably will always be one for several reasons. We have construction happening in terms of permanent accommodation and plans to develop residential land so people can have a choice to live where they work. I find it a shame that while the mining industry has been booming, the communities (of Isaac) have had some form of struggle and I find that unacceptable. On a positive note, Isaac has some great places to live in and visit, and we have a range of activities to suit all ages. Q: What do you see as your key responsibility as Mayor? A: My role is to work, along with the Council, to deliver more family housing, work on improving the liveability and sustainably of our communities, and lobby for a fair share of funding from the state and federal governments.

Q: With such a wide area to cover, how do you collaborate with the people of your communities? A: The key is communication and consultation. We currently have regular round table meetings to hear the views of the communities. However, this is under review to gauge the effectiveness. We also have public meetings and we make personal visits when critical issues arise. Q: On a personal note - can you tell us about what you get up to on your ‘off time’? A: I’m a bit of a sport fanatic, I love netball-having played at a high level for many years. I’m just a TV player now. I also enjoy reading and a game of golf.

MAYOR BAKER’S TOP PRIORITIES FOR ISAAC: Delivering more family housing // Improving the liveability of the Isaac communities // Lobbying for a fair share of funding from state and federal governments // Investing in rural roads and protecting rural land // Small business growth MAYOR BAKER’S TIPS FOR VISITORS TO ISAAC: Teresa’s Creek Dam (about 20km from Clermont), fantastic picnic and fishing spot // Lake Elphinstone (natural freshwater lake between Nebo and Glenden), known as a great water skiing location and diverse bird population // The wetlands at St Lawrence // The various museums, including the Nebo Museum, which houses an extensive collection of memorabilia celebrating the pioneers and the gold mining era

isaac feature IT’S A BRAND NEW YEAR, AND IT’S ALWAYS THE TIME THAT WE SET NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR THE GOALS WE WANT FOR OURSELVES. ONCE THE KIDS ARE BACK AT SCHOOL, IT’S YOUR CHANCE TO WORK ON YOUR SELF-IMPROVEMENT. School may have been, for you, boring, a killer of creativity or just downright awful. But education is still important because it opens the mind and expands it. And if your years in school were bad or boring, you can still educate yourself now. There are differences between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson and that’s what we want our students to explore. Adult learning is now about using the skills we all learn in everyday life and apply them in a variety of fields. Everyday household management can require some of the same skills as a business manager (as anyone who has ever tried to negotiate with a teenager well knows). Open your minds, think about your daily activities and the skills you have. Think about the activities you enjoy and how they may transfer into a new career doing what you love. Find your passion and live it. If you are wanting to expand your eductaion, Advantage Business College offer a wide range of courses including Project Management and Occupational Health and Safety as well as Engineering, Business Management, Front Line Management and more. Eastern Grass Owl Caught in barbed fence on property near Proserpine. Source: Whitsunday Catchment Landcare.

EACH YEAR THOUSANDS OF NATIVE ANIMALS ARE CAUGHT IN BARBED WIRE FENCES AROUND AUSTRALIA, LEADING TO PERMANENT INJURY OR DEATH. FOR OVER 12 YEARS THE MORANBAH BOXING & SPORTING CLUB (MBSC) HAS CREATED A GYM THAT ENGAGES OUR COMMUNITY IN FITNESS AND WELLBEING. Our fitness classes, offered 6 days a week, take your muscles through a full range of motion, improving strength, endurance, stability, and flexibility, while burning tons of calories and pushing your body to do more than you knew you could, but that we know you can! NOT INTO THE GROUP THING? Get similar benefits with our certified personal trainers. Our boxing area is fully equipped, and we offer boxing classes with trained coaches for all ages and abilities from beginner to professional. The Moranbah Boxing & Sporting Club offers a mix of original techniques as well as LES MILLS™ group fitness classes. LES MILLS™ classes harness the energy of many for a motivating, challenging and totally addictive workout experience. All three of our LES MILLS™ classes are scientifically backed, and proven all around the world. We offer child care for active mums and dads Monday - Friday. The best in quality health supplements at competitive prices. In addition to aerobics and weight machines, pickup games on our full size basketball court are a regular occurrence.

Animals like birds, bats, sugar gliders and wallabies easily get snagged on the top row of barbed wire fences as they fly or jump their way from one paddock to the next. Through the Reef Rescue program, however, Reef Catchments has been working with farmers to make a difference by replacing the top fence strand with plain wire, saving potentially thousands of native animals. Reef Rescue projects show benefits Since Reef Rescue started, over 100 fencing projects have been completed in the Mackay - Whitsunday - Isaac catchment. While some graziers were initially concerned about removing the top row of barbed wire for fear of cattle leaning against fences and causing damage, most reported no negative impact on either fence integrity or instances of cattle escape. One grazier, whose property backs onto Eungella National Park, had reported up to 17 native animal entanglements per day along their barbed fence line. Reef Catchments suggested replacing the top barbed wire
with hightensile plain wire because most of the entanglements occurred on the top wire. The move resulted in a significant reduction in the number of entanglements. The use of high-tensile wire means cattle can’t loosen the top wire by leaning on it, which can happen with low-tensile alternatives. This means cattle escapes were no more common with high-tensile plain wire than with an equivalent barbed fence. If you would like to talk to Reef Rescue about fencing projects on your property please contact Scott Underdown on 0437 344 851 or visit the Reef Catchments office at 172 Victoria Street in Mackay to lodge an expression of interest.

FENCE FACTS:

MBSC is community driven and not the big box gym franchise, so we’re open to your suggestions and will do whatever we can to fit fitness into your busy schedule. We want you to be healthy and have fun because at Moranbah Boxing & Sporting Club, we put the FUN into Fitness! So come in and check us out today, we are located at the End of Tallon Street, Moranbah or give us a call on 4941 8965. 28 www.corelife.com.au

• Cattle are no more likely to break through a plain wire fence than a barbed fence, as long as high-tensile wire is used. • Native wildlife fatalities are greatly reduced using a top strand of plain wire. • Even though you will see animals entangled on lower barbed strands, the use
of a top plain wire will minimise the impact that fence has on local wildlife. • Over 100 fencing projects have been conducted through the Reef Rescue program using a plain top wire, with few examples of cattle pushing through the fence.

HITACHINO GINGER ALE

DEUS BRUT DES FLANDRES

Belgium

Sweet and strong hoppy flavour that should be served extremely cold. Very similar to Stella in taste so if you like Stella, then this beer will suit. A very easy drinking beer that goes down very easy so be prepared to feel the effects of the 5% alcohol very quickly.

Another superb strong beer from the Namyslow brewery. When poured, the beer has a dark golden amber colour and a large white head that sticks around for a considerable time. It has a strong malty smell, the taste is rather sweet but not too sweet and it is well balanced by a spicy hoppiness, it’s also very smooth and does not leave a strong aftertaste.

A dose of fresh ginger roots added to the brew kettle creates an intriguing mix of ginger, maltsweetness, and citrus like aromas and flavours. Hoppy dryness is very subdued with ginger-sweet-spicy notes dominating throughout to the very finish.

Quite a unique style of beer, made in Belgium in the top fermenting style then taken to France (the Flanders region) to be aged on yeast lees like a champagne. On the nose it offers a really heady sweet orange and scents of hay.
The palate offers much the same with an almost sour back palate like a Belgian Gueuze beer.

A: It was through my dad, he was always involved in motor racing in some shape or form and did a little bit of driving himself but nothing too serious. He loved motor racing, and it was always on TV at home so I guess that’s where my interest and love of the sport began. And then I got a Go Kart for my 9th birthday, and it all started from there. Q: It looks like you have just flown through the ranks, but in fact you put in many years of time and your own money to get started. A: Yes it’s very tough. Motor racing is different from a lot of sports because you can have a lot of talent, but you may not have the money to have the best equipment and really show that talent off. It’s always been a bit of a struggle for us because I don’t come from a wealthy background. But saying that, I am very appreciative that we could afford to go racing because there are lots of people out there that aren’t as fortunate. I raced Karts for eight years in the lower levels and knew that I had to be racing in the higher levels so, we looked at the cost of that and how were we ever going to do that. We’d look at the team to beat, we’d look at the dollars involved, and often thought, “How are we ever going to put that together?” Dad and I had a lot of supporters around to get me to that level. Q: How did you support your career in the early days? A: I grew up in McLaren Vale, South Australia, and through school I worked in the vineyards to help chip in for the racing gear. Once I finished 38 www.corelife.com.au

school I worked in a winery for a year and a half, although there was a lean period where we couldn’t afford to do much at all. I then decided to make the move to Melbourne and worked for a team to learn more about the industry, and I ended up racing for them and stayed there for three years. After that I started my own race team in the V8 development series. I actually had a supporter who bought me a race car which was half the mission done, so we did it all ourselves and that was extremely hard work. Then I had the opportunity to step into the main stream the year after that. Q: You’re changing cars this year from the Ford Falcon to the Mercedes Benz, how are you preparing for that changeover? A: It’s all the same preparation for me. The cars will be very similar to what we’ve had physically, and they will still have the same mechanicals as the cars we’ve had before. They require a fairly similar driving style, and I’ll be employing similar philosophies that I’ve used in the past. Q: You finished 5th in 2012, are you hoping the new car will help build on that rank? A: That’s a tough question to answer because there is so much change and so many elements of unknown. There are certainly a lot of positives with the change, and in the long-term it really is going to give us what we need to take it to the next level. Q: What’s your training regime? A: You need a high level of fitness, but that’s something I enjoy doing. I do a lot of cycling, gym work and running because it’s part of my life. Q: Do you have any sports or hobbies off the track? A: I’m a sports fan in general. I used to play football and cricket at school and I’d still love to play other sports, but the risk is too high these days. If I get injured, I can’t just have a few weeks off and come back, there is a lot that goes into running the car so you have to be as healthy as you can be to stay on the track.

A STORY THAT STARTED AS A SMALL SHED OPERATION OF TWO STAFF BACK IN SEPTEMBER 2006, HAS SINCE GROWN INTO AN INSPIRING TALE OF OVER 28 VOLUNTEERS WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE SOME OF THE MOST SACRED RECIPES AND PRODUCE KNOWN TO THE MACKAY REGION.

With delicious gourmet sauces, hampers to dive at and the latest hooha – the special adult liqueurs... this and more can be credited back to the diverse walks of life that lend a hand at the Sarina Sugar Shed. Described as a family that have a passion for innovation, fun and sweet things, the Sarina Sugar Shed builds confidence and pride in the region’s sugar industry and in the new faces of those that enter – who become addicted to the marvels of its sugary gourmet treats!

ARE YOU A CHOCOLATE LOVER? TRY OUT THIS SCRUMPTIOUS CHOCOLATE BROWNIE WITH RASPBERRY COULIS RECIPE FROM STELLAROSSA INGREDIENTS: Brownie: 150g unsalted butter 250g good quality dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa mass) 5 eggs ½ teaspoon vanilla bean extract 350g castor sugar 250g plain flour Small pinch of salt Raspberry coulis: 500g frozen raspberries 100g castor sugar

1/3 nip of Sarina Mango Rum Liqueur 1/3 nip of Sarina Butterscotch Schnapps 1/3 nip of Sarina Mango Schnapps Method: Serve Sarina Sling in a cocktail glass, layer Sarina Mango Rum Liqueur, Sarina Butterscotch Schnapps and finally Sarina Mango Schnapps.

METHOD: 1. Pre heat oven to 150°C. Line an 18cm square cake tin with baking paper. 2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stirring constantly, take off the heat to cool slightly. 3. Sift the flour and sugar together into a large bowl. Make a well in the middle and add the eggs, salt and vanilla. Whisk together slowly until combined. 4. Fold the melted chocolate into the flour mix gently until just combined.

1/3 nip of Sarina Mango Schnapps 1/3 nip of Sarina Butterscotch Schnapps 1/3 nip of milk or cream Method: Rainbow delight should be served in a shot glass. Layer Sarina butterscotch Schnapps and the Sarina Mango Schnapps. Lastly add milk or cream and ice and enjoy. 40 www.corelife.com.au

5. Pour brownie mix into prepared cake tin and bake for 45mins or until just set. 6. While the brownie is baking, make the raspberry coulis. Place berries and sugar into saucepan and cook on a medium heat stirring occasionally until the berries break down and become syrup. 7. Pass the raspberry syrup through a fine sieve to remove the pits. Set aside ready to serve. 8. Allow the brownie to cool in tin completely before turning out and cutting. Serve warm with raspberry coulis and double cream or ice cream.

BEFORE THE ROSES AND CHOCOLATES THERE WAS WHIPPINGS, NUDITY AND MARRIAGE BANS. HOW VALENTINE’S DAY HAS CHANGED THROUGH THE AGES.

It’s hard to image the most romantic day of the year may have had some very painful beginnings. The day of love, which dates back to the third century, has many rumoured origins but the most interesting surrounds the antics of a Roman pagan fertility festival held on February 15. One report talks of naked men whipping young maidens with goat skin whips in the hope of boosting fertility. The festival, known as Lupercalia, continued until the fifth century when it was converted to commemorate Saint Valentine’s Day. The most widely documented origin is the legend of a young priest named Valentine who, in the third century, fought a decree by the then Roman Emperor Claudius II which forbade young men to marry because of the belief they made better soldiers if they were unmarried. Valentine defied the Emperor by marrying young couples in secret. He was eventually found out and put to death, hence the sainthood and the legend of love. Today the feast of St Valentine has largely become a commercial opportunity, with Aussies forking out more than $900 million last year. According to business analysts IBISworld, most of the money was spent on weekends away, with chocolates and confectionery the second most purchased items. TURN YOUR LOVE AROUND THIS VALENTINE’S DAY HAVE YOU NOTICED CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR PARTNER TEND TO BEGIN WITH “YOU ALWAYS...” OR “YOU NEVER”..? Well, according to Susan Pearse, creator of the Mind Gardener Great Relationships Guide, those words could be among the first signs that your relationship is in serious trouble and are often a predictor for divorce. But just catching yourself in the act of saying these words is an easy way to start tuning your relationship from positive to negative. Pearse suggests listening out for how often you say “you never” or “you always” and ask yourself if there is something that is generally irritating you or a problem that can be sorted in another way. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to reflect on your relationship and how to increase the romance. The dinners and flowers are great but won’t help your relationship bloom if you’re stuck in old patterns of negativity. Changing your thinking and speech toward your partner is an easy step in the right direction.

v-day feature WHAT DO YOUR INITIALS SAY ABOUT YOU? St Valentine’s Day was originally a Roman fest called “Lupercalia”, later it became known as Februata. During the festival, the men drew the names of women and they coupled up with each other for that day (this practice now is known as wife swapping). One belief, in the olden days, was that the first unmarried man a girl saw, would be her future mate, and vice versa. Things aren’t quite so simple these days but if you are looking for a special Valentine, you also can check out your compatibility from their initials.

A

There’s nothing subtle about you. You are not the romantic type!

B

You know all about love and know how to indulge yourself and how to please your partner.

C

You really want to be in it. You want to be sure that you are loved or have several loved ones.

D

You are very intense in your lovemaking but you want to have security first before making the ultimate move.

E

You are the type that likes to flirt. You like the chase but once you’re with a mate that is right for you, you will give it up and be quite loyal.

N

You are a critical sort of character, and you can take it or leave it where sex is concerned.

W

F

You are a bit picky and a bit on the dramatic side.

O

You do not like to fanasise about sex. When it is not realised, you tend to throw yourself into the job at hand to use up all that extra energy.

X

You are the “ yobbo” of the love world.

G

You just love sex and you can reach great heights in erotica.

Y

You are extremely fussy and as long as you get what you want you’re happy, bugger anyone else.

H

You are a rather patient and cautious customer where sex is concerned.

P Q

You tend to go for the body, not so much for the mind! You also prefer some nice old-fashioned body contact. You are the sexual silent type, plenty of muscle and energy but no pillow talk.

Z

You are easily aroused, especially after seeing someone else in action.

I

You are very open minded towards sex, but you approach it in a very professional manner.

J

You like the chase of sex. You have plenty of energy to spare where sex is concerned.

S

You are hot stuff where sex is concerned but you want to be financially secure before you can start to indulge.

K

On the surface you are very straight, but once on an intimate footing, you certainly know how to let your hair down.

T

You like to flirt, and when something comes of it, you can turn it on.

L

You love all the pomp and ceremony or are just as happy in the backseat of a car.

U

A very generous type of lover. You want to satisfy your partner first.

You are an intense and passionate lover.

V

You like to have unusual love affairs. Maybe a bit on the “kinky side”.

M

R

Good sexual relationships with your partner will make you more secure.

You “ooze” sex appeal and you know it and will use it to your best advantage.

LOCALS ARE BEING INVITED TO HOLIDAY IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD AS PART OF WHITSUNDAYS MARKETING AND DEVELOPMENT’S UPCOMING CAMPAIGN, ASKING LOCALS TO ‘LOVE THE WHITSUNDAYS’. As one new local is starting to discover, most locals know they have world famous icons on their back step, but rarely make the time to enjoy them. Chief Executive Officer of Whitsundays Marketing and Development, Danial Rochford, moved to the Whitsundays in November 2012 and has been blown away by the natural beauty of the place. “We are some of the luckiest people in the world to live in North Queensland, and I can’t wait for friends and family to come up and visit my new home,” Mr Rochford said. “So far I’ve enjoyed wandering down Airlie’s main street and choosing from the range of restaurants all with something unique to offer, and driving up to Bowen on the weekend to relax on the beach,” he said. “Next on my list is to make friends with someone who owns a boat so I can go fishing and exploring the islands!” In his short time as a

Whitsundays local Danial has already sent plenty of photos to family and friends bragging about the place. “I am sending them all the airfare deals telling them how easy it is to get here, and how much less stressed and more happy all the locals are here,” Mr Rochford said. “Whitsundays Marketing and Development’s ‘Love the Whitsundays’ campaign has now been running for 3 years and now is the time to show our love for our home by taking a holiday here and taking advantage of the massive discounts on offer,” he said. “It’s no secret Queensland’s tourism regions have had a tough few years, and now more than ever it’s important to support our local industries and holiday at home,” he said.“The promotion will offer discounted tours and accommodation deals throughout the Whitsundays region, on sale at the end of February,” The Whitsundays is approximately a 2 hour drive from Mackay, with a huge range of accommodation and activity choices on the Whitsunday Coast, or a short ferry ride to island resort accommodation. The Love the Whitsundays campaign is run by Whitsundays Marketing and Development in partnership with Tourism Queensland.

There’s plenty to discover that the tourists haven’t taken over yet! From February - June, an absolute must is a visit to Cedar Creek Falls. Senior hairstylist and part owner, Casey Kelland, tells us how she transformed Khannah for this month’s make over. Khannah has been a client of Blessed Hair and Beauty since opening in 2010. She has always had long blonde hair but came to me with a change in mind. I asked how short she was willing to go and after a long chat I realised she was wanting a short, easy to maintain style. So, to go with a complete change of style, we thought a totally different colour would add to the effect of the new style. I gave Khannah a bright new colour using Keune products. The base is an intense mahogany red highlighted by nice natural blonde. I then gave her a fashionable new style cut, which suits Khannah’s lifestyle and is easy to achieve and maintain. I have spoken to Khannah since the make over and she is loving her new look and getting many compliments. She also said that she would be keeping the new look for a long time to come. MAKE UP We use Napolean products in the salon. FOUNDATION: I used a nice natural base of Napolean make up with a camera finish powder. Using natural hair brushes is great for hygiene as you can wash them each time also.

S

EYES: I smudged white eyeliner all over the lid, which is a great tip as it gives you intensity with the eye colours and also helps keep your make up on for a lot longer. I used natural browns to put a little colour on the lid with lots of smokey dark eyeliner and lots of black eyelashes for depth.

s

8

LIPS: I wanted a very natural nude look on the lips so I covered the whole lip in a nude lipliner. Once again this is a great tip to keep your colour on the lips a lot longer and then I applied a shiny nude lip gloss over the top.

AFTER

All round, Khannah has had a brand new look which was a pleasure to work on and she is extremely happy with her new look.

ASHLEIGH ROWE AND REBECCA McCREDIE OVER TWELVE SUCCESSFUL YEARS IN BUSINESS, PRECISE CORPORATION HAS GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. WITH ASHLEIGH ROWE, OWNER AND DIRECTOR OF PRECISE AT THE WHEEL, THE COMPANY HAS GROWN FROM A SMALL MAINTENANCE BUSINESS TO A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION.

Understandably managing such a business comes with its fair share of stress, Ashleigh Rowe and Operations Manager for Precise Corporation, Rebecca McCredie tells us how they unwind and spend their downtime. “On our days off we spend our time working on our 50 acre property,” Ashleigh said. ”I’ve built a freestyle mx compound and hosted the first round of RFD, the Australian freestyle series. I’ve also built a Queensland spec motocross track with endure loops and hill climbs, we’ve planted a couple of hundred palms and bamboos so it all looks pretty cool.” The couple are very active and spend a lot of time outdoors, Ashleigh enjoys spending his time riding dirt bikes, boating and fishing while Rebecca says, “I also have a dirt bike, but I prefer to watch Ash ride. I’m a dancer, I prefer sports where the landing isn’t as hard.” A priority for this go-getter duo is creating the right work/life balance and they do so by getting the important jobs done and leaving the less important things for later. “It’s difficult not to bring work home or on holidays and regardless of where we are, we endeavour to be contactable 24/7. Ash has taught me a lot about prioritising in business so my balance is getting better,” Rebecca said. 56 www.corelife.com.au

Ashleigh and Rebecca are very community minded and they recognise the importance of supporting younger generations. “If anyone has any good suggestions, or needs a bit of a hand to maybe get something new off the ground, feel free to come say hi and have a chat. We will be opening our Moto and freestyle more to the public this year and will finish the new foam pit as soon as it cools down a little,” Ashleigh said. BEFORE

A TRUE INSPRIATION PORTER BY DAY, DJ BY NIGHT, OLIVER HAS ACHIEVED INCREDIBLE THINGS THROUGH HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION. HE IS AN INSPIRATION TO ANYONE WHO THINKS GYMS ARE FOR FIT PEOPLE, AND WE HAVE SEEN HIM WORK THROUGH MOTIVATION LAPSES AND SETBACKS TO ACHIEVE THIS AMAZING RESULT. OLIVER HAS NEVER BEEN AFRAID TO ASK FOR ADVICE AND HELP ALONG THE WAY.

Q: How much did you weigh in the photo when you joined? A: About 130kg Q: How much do you weigh now? A: 95kg Q: Are you stronger now? A: Exponentially! My strength has at least doubled since I started.

Q: What’s the best advice you can give anyone else trying to make such a huge change? A: You can do it! It may be hard, but nothing will happen if you don’t put in the hard work. Motivation is the hardest thing to find, but once you find it, you can do anything and there is no time like right now to do it! Congratulations Oliver! You are truly inspirational, and stories like yours are the very reason we love working in fitness. - Corey Whibley

Q: How often do you train? A: As a general rule, I train about 4-5 times per week. Q: Cardio or strength training? A: Mainly 4 sessions of weight training and one session of cardio, but my weight training is all intensity based so it makes the heart work as hard as cardio. Q: What is the best advice you have been given along the way? A: Training with a partner is better than by yourself. It is amazing how much harder you can push when you have someone there to help you and push you! Q: Do you take any supplements? A: Absolutely, supplemements are the key! Without them I would not be close to what I am today.

Oliver takes: Jack 3D Micro pre workout for extra energy, focus and pumps. Xtend while he trains for instant recovery & greater fat burning and Protowhey post workout for recovery. Essential Exercise: Squat – you may hate them but they are one of the best exercises you can do, a true full body workout. Essential Supplement: Good quality protein, it is essential for the muscle repair, therefore essential for muscle growth, therefore essential for fat loss!

health + fitness CANDIDA ALBICANS (SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS MONILIA) IS A FUNGUS THAT IS NORMALLY PRESENT ON THE SKIN AND IN MUCUS MEMBRANES SUCH AS THE VAGINA, MOUTH, OR RECTUM. THE FUNGUS ALSO CAN TRAVEL THROUGH THE BLOOD STREAM AND AFFECT THE THROAT, INTESTINES, AND HEART VALVES.

CANDIDIASIS MONILIASIS:

1.

is called thrush when it grows in the mouth, especially in infants.

2.

shows up on skin as a red, inflamed, and sometimes scaly rash, such as diaper rash.

There are many options online all claiming to cure Candida, whether they are 100 percent effective is debatable, it may remove the symptoms but not the growth.

3.

causes vaginalitis moniliasis, commonly known as a yeast infection, in the vagina.

Candia is a bad yeast that is in our body, what we want to do is ensure there are more good yeast and bacteria’s that promote our health, not take away from it.

causes candidal onchomycosis in the nails or paronychia next to the nails.

So we suggest eating a diet that doesn’t support the growth, so no sugars or yeasts or grains, but lots of greens and fermented food along with protein and good fats, coconut oil is great and also a natural antifungal.

4. 5. 6.

can also affect the esophagus and the digestive tract. infection of the penis often results in balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis).

An infection in the bloodstream can affect the kidneys, heart, lungs, eyes, or other organs causing high fever, chills, anemia, and sometimes a rash or shock. Candida can cause the following problems, depending upon the organ infected:

1.

in the kidneys, can cause blood in the urine.

2.

in the heart, can cause murmurs and valve damage.

3.

in the lungs, can cause bloody sputum (mucus discharge).

4.

in the eyes, can cause pain and blurred vision.

5.

in the brain, can cause seizures and acute changes in mental function or behaviour.

PEOPLE JUDGE YOUR AGE BY LOOKING AT YOUR SKIN IN EXPOSED AREAS. FIRST THE FACE, THEN THE DÉCOLLETAGE OR UPPER CHEST AND THEN YOUR HANDS. Most women take some care of their faces but they forget about the upper chest. This combined with the Australian outdoor environment and our harsh sun has led to the saying, “You can always pick an Australian woman by the damaged chest”. Severe sun damage in this area produces a condition called Poikloderma which is a mixture of red surface blood vessels and pigmentation. It is the hardest to treat. So if you look at your chest skin in the mirror and don’t like what you see, what can you do about it? Firstly you need to stop more damage occurring and this means using effective sun blocks or using more cover up. Secondly you should extend the home care regimen that you use for your face to the décolletage as well. The most useful will be the Vitamin C, Peptides, Glycolic Acid and Kojic Acid for pigmentation. Used sparingly they need not break the bank.

Where Poikloderma is present, light-based treatments are often needed. The older IPL machines can help the pigmentation but are not so good for the redness, there is also the risk of leaving marks or even scarring with these machines. This does respond better to the new machines coming on the market. These are called OPL’s which is Optimised Pulsed Light. Most cases however will respond best to the 1440nm laser, which treats the underlying sun damage and rejuvenates the skin. Also we find that the LED Infra Red Light improves and hastens healing. Sometimes a mixture of all these treatments will be needed. So it is a bit of a curious situation using one form of light energy to counteract the damage caused by another. As always, prevention is better than cure so limit the sun damage and see our skin therapist regarding preventative home care products. For more information, pop down and see the friendly team at Brisbane Street Clinic or give them a call on 4944 0005.

Where the damage is severe some office procedures will probably be needed also. Light TCA peels and microhydradermabrasion will help.

THE KOR WHITENING SYSTEM WAS INVENTED BY INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED COSMETIC DENTIST AND WHITENING SCIENCE EXPERT DR. ROD KURTHY. Thousands of dentists around the world agree that KoR Whitening is by far the most reliable and effective whitening system ever developed. In fact, the KoR Whitening System is so effective, it is the only recognised whitening system that whitens even tetracycline-stained teeth in a short time (previously thought to be impossible). And now, these amazing KoR Whitening results are typically achieved with little to no sensitivity! WHY DOES KOR WHITENING WORK SO WELL? The KoR Whitening System works by restoring your teeth’s ability to absorb oxygen. The oxygen from its whitening gel is absorbed deeply into the tooth, dissolving stain molecules. HOW LONG DOES KOR WHITENING LAST? Unlike other whitening methods, with easy periodic home maintenance, KoR whitening is entirely permanent.

Whitening products have been clinically studied and safely used on millions of patients without harm to teeth or gums. Whitening is considered entirely safe.

health + fitness ARE YOU FLAT, DE-MOTIVATED, AND HAVE THE ENDURANCE OF A RACE CAR WITH JUST FUMES IN THE TANKS? DEFIBRILLATOR-LIKE DOSES OF STIMULANTS AND AMINO ACIDS ALONE DO NOT PROVIDE THE ESSENTIAL SUBSTRATE THAT FUELS INTENSE AND LASTING WORKOUTS. FOCUS WITHOUT FUEL IS A SHORT-LIVED EXERCISE. CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE PRODUCTS FROM HI ENERGY THAT WILL HELP GET YOU BACK IN THE GAME!

Voltagen™ is the first pre-workout to combine proven doses of the most effective supplement stimulant - caffeine - with the unequaled fueling and insulin-spiking speed of university proven Vitargo©: SubstraStim™ technology. Vitargo is a sugar-free carbohydrate that moves through the stomach and enters the blood at double the rate of the fastest generic carbohydrate: maltodextrin (a homopolysaccharide). Translation: bloat-free, super-fast fueling, and a lightning quick insulin spike response the gateway to muscle blood flow and fullness. Vitargo’s delivery of fuel substrate to the brain and muscle supports intense training, that endures. Coupling this with Voltagen’s unique, biphasic caffeine stimulant drive matrix turns up mental focus and intensity, and minimises the painful crash that often follows “exotic stimulant cocktails”. Voltagen, when used consistently, improves power, strength, and maximal endurance. Use as a minority fuel during intense workouts.

ThermoJet™ is the next generation “jitter free” stimulant designed to give you a steady rush of pure adrenaline - stimulating your mind, body, and soul. Until now, there has never been such a clean feeling energy product. The mental effects can be best described as a progressive elevation in mood, almost euphoric in some events. The energizing effect is like nothing else; the steady surge of energy quickly enhances strength, power, endurance, stamina, and mental focus while stimulating fat loss. ThermoJet™ was designed to propel you throughout the day while also stimulating you for your most intense workouts. By design, ThermoJet™ can effectively boost energy levels for up to eight hours from a single dose, making it the ideal energy supplement for once a day dosing. Whether you are looking for an all day energy boost, a way to incinerate body fat, or just a pre-workout energy rush, ThermoJet™ is the only choice.

Pack on Serious Lean Muscle: Most people who train hard don’t understand why they can’t grow like they should. Every serious bodybuilder knows the tried-and-tested impact of large dose BCAAs. Packing on serious lean muscle is a matter of reversing the body’s natural tendency to break down muscle (catabolism). AMINOCORE BCAAs to the Rescue! Now, AMINOCORE has a proprietary 3-phase solubility treatment technology called MYOTRISOL™ that has turned this extremely high level, ideal ratio BCAAs into a delicious and easily mixable anabolic powerhouse – ready whenever and wherever you are! That’s real BCAA supplementation! AMINOCORE has a whopping 8,180 mg! That’s right, over 8 grams of BCAAs in a single scoop. Perfect for consumption during your workout to drive up the anabolic impact of your workout, or away from the gym when you can´t get your protein and you need to prevent the catabolic breakdown of muscle tissue and increase protein synthesis!

UNDERGOING NATUROPATHIC TREATMENTS ALONGSIDE IVF MORE THAN DOUBLES YOUR CHANCES OF CONCEIVING. In today’s modern society, the subject of fertility is becoming much less ‘taboo’. Unlike the past, couples will often share their experiences of having trouble conceiving with family and friends. And thanks to treatments such as IVF, more and more of these couples are having the chance to improve their odds of becoming parents. At some point in their lives, one in six couples will experience infertility. Issues with fertility can occur in either partner, with the ratio of infertility comparable in both men and women. Sometimes our body simply needs a helping hand to achieve the beautiful baby we aspire to have. Did you know that recent studies have shown that undergoing Naturopathic treatments alongside IVF more than doubles your chances of conceiving? Naturopaths at the Whitsunday Health Clinic are trained to integrate naturopathic medicine with IVF cycles or other assisted reproductive technologies. Naturopath Rowena Kissun of the Whitsunday Health Clinic understands that ART/IVF can be a stressful and emotional experience on both the individual and on the relationship. These feelings are common and she is trained to provide you with the assistance and support that you need. Rowena has participated in advanced studies of natural fertility management and will work alongside your medical specialist to prepare the body for a healthy and effective conception, pregnancy and birth. For those couples trying to conceive naturally, there are also many things you can do to create the best environment in your body for the conception and development of your baby. Talking to a Naturopath will give you and your family a great start to a lifetime of health and happiness together. More more information, call the helpful team at the Whitsunday Heath Clinic today on 4948 1443.

In WHAT WORKS BEST... YOU WILL FIND A MILLION ARTICLES DEBATING WHICH IS BEST, “CARDIO OR WEIGHTS”. MOST PEOPLE IN THE BID TO “BURN FAT” OFF THEIR BODIES ARE CONSTANTLY BEING TOLD THAT CARDIO BURNS FAT. IT DOESN’T.

t yo

FACT: Fat does not burn – never has – and never will! I have worked in fitness centres for nearly 15 years and have never smelled it yet! You only have to think about it a little – of course it takes more muscle fibre to lift your arm or leg with added weight – which of course requires more energy in the process, than if you were to lift your arm or leg without load. Example – you would have to walk approximately 800m to equal the energy expenditure required to perform one set of leg presses with a near maximum load at a slow even pace. This is a great comparison – however ADD IN the redevelopment of muscle fibre recruitment which means the next time you walk your 800m you are going to be using heaps more muscle and consuming more energy with every step. FACT: In short – you will achieve more in 3 x 30 minute functionally focussed weight training sessions per week than 8-10 hours of walking.

F

So you will achieve way more in the terms of energy expenditure and the re-establishment of lean body mass – which uses more energy 24 hours per day.

Exercise is a part of our database – but it can very easily be misinterpreted as an unwanted stress – therefore giving a negative result – rather than a positive one.

People can store unwanted fat from exercise – the total opposite of why they are training. So being mindful of factors like your posture, breathing and heart rate and keeping control at all times will assist you in achieving your goals – not push you further away from them.

CONCLUSION: WEIGHTS WORK BEST.
