INDIE ROCK BAND BOY AND BEAR RETURNS FROM EUROPE FOR NATIONAL TOUR. It’s been a mere three years since the Sydney five piece outfit Boy and Bear started making music and they’re already an award-winning and world-touring band. With their debut record ‘Moonfire’, Boy and Bear won best group and best album at the 2011 ARIAs and recently completed a UK/Europe tour. CORE Magazine caught up with Killian Gavin (vocals and guitar) from Brussels, Boy and Bear’s last stop before returning to Australia for their ‘Remembering the Mexican Tour’.
Q
What was the highlight of your UK/Europe tour?
A You know, probably on our last night. We played in Belgium and it was just a really, really fun show and the crowd was so enthusiastic. Surprisingly people are pretty familiar with us. During the tour, in which Q city did you feel most at home?
A
Berlin. It has a lot of art and music.
Q
How do you enjoy life on the road?
It’s good. Of course, touring A has its ups and downs. Constantly traveling is part of the job, I guess. We played shows for the past seven days straight, which means we didn’t get a lot of time to see the sights, but we’re done now, so, yay! How has life changed since Q winning 2011 ARIA’s for best group and best album? You know what; I’d have to A say, not really at all. Not to take away from the significance 12 • www.coremag.com.au
of winning those awards and how stoked I was, but at our end of the deal, we just write and record songs and play shows. That is the core of what we do, it never really changes. It’s been really lovely and mind blowing to win those awards, but day to day, we’re over here playing shows and we’ll come home to play a few more and life will go on. Tell us about the writing Q process for ‘Moonfire’. It starts with Dave, who will A have a skeleton for a song and bring it to the band. We’ll fight about it and wait for it to take shape. It’s a democratic process; we take everyone’s ideas into consideration. It does take a bit longer, but at the end of the day, the results are the best possible.
Q
Why ‘Moonfire’?
It’s a funny story. Jake A bought a DVD called ‘Moonfire’ from a $2 pile at a pharmacy or newsagency. It was made in the 70s, the cover had a big truck with flames and the moon; essentially, the most ridiculous cover ever. We watched
it on the bus and it was the worst film ever. We joked about calling the record ‘Moonfire’ for months, and when it came time to name the album, it just felt right at the end of the day to stick with it. What’s the story behind the Q band’s name? It’s a slightly embarrassing A story. Dave threw a bunch of random words into an online band name generator after we had a couple of songs recorded and needed a name. ‘Boy and Bear’ just stuck. We hear that you are Q working on a second album while you’re on tour. How’s that shaping up? It’s going well! We have four A or five songs that we’ve been fleshing out. We’re hoping to get one or two of them ready for the Australian tour. It’s really early days. We’re working hard and spending lots of time writing and recording to get songs ready for 2013. One of the first stops on Q your Australian Tour was in Mackay. Have you been here before?
It was our first time in A Mackay. We’re excited to play in the regional cities. The idea behind the tour is to play smaller venues and have more intimate shows. The Mackay crowd was awesome!
1. Beer of choice: Duvel, a Belgian beer 2. Who do you cheer for? Sydney FC 3. Favourite song of all time: Jealous Guy by John Lennon 4. Favourite thing to cook: Sausages. I’m a man of simple pleasures. 5. Most exotic place you’ve ever played: Pyramid Rock Festival on Philip Island 6. Most famous person you’ve ever met: The guys from Mumford & Sons 7. Biggest achievement: Playing the Enmore Theatre in Sydney
Q
So tell me, how did 360 come about?
Umm, well I started rapping A at 15, ‘cause I was skateboarding and my brother’s mates were into hip hop and they got me into it too. How would you describe Q your style? To be honest, I can’t really A narrow it down to one thing – I wouldn’t call it hip hop exactly – more rapping over music. There’s so many different elements in there; pop, dubstep, dance music. You can’t really label anything in this day and age – I’d just rather call it music.
platinum – doesn’t feel real. It’s just so good to see that all this work is starting to pay off.
Q
Are you planning to release another single from the album?
Well my song, Child, is A being played at the moment on commercial radio – I’d say this one will be pumped for a while, then another single will be released in the next few months. I have a great feeling about this next single too – I’ve always had a feeling in my gut about this one. Having just done the GTM Q circuit, what was your highlight from the Tour?
The most popular songs Q from your album, Falling and Flying, would have to be Boys Like You (ft. Gossling), Killer and your new single Child. Are you happy with the response so far?
Well Townsville was probably A the biggest and best show of my life – it was f**king insane! Just that many people moshing and singing every word to my songs was unreal, and probably my best performance to date.
Ecstatic, yeah! To be honest A with you, I had a set of goals for this album, but the response has just blown me away. Like, I never expected Boys Like You would sell 300,000 copies and go triple
Q
Do you have a favourite band on that tour?
City and Colour (Canada). A Incredible, absolutely f**king incredible! They’re my fiancé
Krystal’s favourite band and she got me hooked – to see them from side of stage was just f**king incredible! You’re certainly a festival Q favourite, which do you prefer – festivals or your own gigs? I’d have to say festivals! The A sheer size – it’s on a whole other level. Don’t get me wrong, I love doing those intimate shows of 1000 people, but there’s nothing like playing to a crowd of 10 000 people all singing your songs with you. You’ve just finished up Q your Flying Tour, do you have a favourite venue/memory from the tour? Honestly, it was the A Melbourne show at the Corner Hotel. My parents were there and it was great to just to see how proud they are. I’ve been at this for over 10 years, so it’s great to show them the hard work’s paid off. Mackay last saw you at Q the MAD Festival earlier this year – are you looking

forward to coming back for River Sessions? Yeah, I can’t wait! It’s gunna A be nuts! A bunch of us are coming up to make a holiday and party of it! It’s going to be epic! Did you get a chance to Q explore the area last time you were here? Not at all – we only really A saw the inside of our hotel room! Hopefully this time round we can get out and explore a little. I’m keen to hit the beach and soak up some North QLD sun!
Q
With 2 albums already released, is another one in the works?
I’ve already started working A on the next record. I’ve just come back from being in London for 12 days, working with a whole bunch of different producers. I’ve now got 2 or 3 songs that I’m really happy with, so it’s definitely happening!

Beer. BBQ. Chicken. Is there anything better? Follow this simple-as recipe to impress your missus, mates and neighbours and still fit your stubby in your meal. Now that’s good eatin’! INGREDIENTS • • • •
1 tablespoon smoked paprika 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon packed dark brown sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 2 3
Fresh, smooth, and well balanced. Malt and toffee flavours blend pleasantly with a light bitterness. Some tasters notice a hint of orange zest. This is not a complex brew; it’s crisp, warming, and refreshing. This could be a good entry-level beer for folks who like their beers mild and fruity.
• 1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chilli • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 1 whole chicken • 1 stubby beer, preferably ale or lager
. Preheat a gas grill (with all burners lit) to 150°C or build a fire in a charcoal grill and let it burn down to medium heat (about 150°C). . Combine paprika, oregano, salt, brown sugar, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, chipotle chilli, and pepper in a small bowl.
Leffe Blond is a pale abbey beer, with a full, sunny, golden colour. It has a smooth and full bodied taste and a rich creamy head. Like all the Leffe beers, it is a ’connoisseur’ beer that is easy to drink.
. Remove giblets from chicken (if included) and trim any excess skin. Loosen the skin over the breast and thigh meat. Rub the spice mixture under the skin onto the breast meat and leg meat, a little on the skin and inside the cavity. Tuck wings under the body and tie the legs together with kitchen string.
4
. If using a gas grill, turn off one burner (leaving 1 to 2 burners lit, depending on your grill). If using a charcoal grill, move the coals to one side. Wearing an oven mitt, carefully place a drip pan under the grill rack on the unheated side. Place the chicken breast-side down on the rack over the pan. Pour half the beer into the cavity (it’s OK if some drips out into the drip pan).
5
. Close the lid and roast undisturbed for 45 minutes.
6
. Turn the chicken breast-side up. Pour the remaining beer into the cavity. Cover and continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh without touching bone registers 70°C, 30 to 45 minutes more. Transfer the chicken to a clean cutting board; let rest for 10 minutes before removing the string and carving.
Pays homage to the American Brown Ale. Dark, with a deep, cherry-red hue. Caramel and chocolate on the palette, with a lightly roasted finish. Hop bitterness and aromatic character are balanced, and pleasantly textured.
Its malty aroma is complemented by the gentle nose of banana. Its flavour unfolds with a sensual sparkle and a smart crispness, which balances its aroma perfectly. Tropically fruity; its ripe banana flavour, emphasised by a hint of bitterness, comes from the addition of real fair trade bananas and finishes with an emphatic, steely dryness.

With the cooler months approaching there are two things that are sure to happen - it’s going to be harder to get moving in the morning and it’s going to get harder to catch Barra. Both wild Barra and the lake fish get a little tough during the winter months. With Barra, as the water temp drops their metabolism slows and they simply don’t feed as often. A big dog has to eat though and if you crack the right conditions and find one of the areas in the lake where the fish are holding, the fishing can be great.
cast hard body lures like the Killalure Barrabait (in the 12 or 20 foot model) through or past the trees and drag the lure down so it’s getting in front of their noses and then stop the lure and give it a few seconds to slowly float.
Probably the most important factor is the weather or wind conditions. Light winds are always better on the lake but during winter it is really important, as a lot of the fishing is done in the shallows or in the top metre or two of the water column. What I mean by this is, on the days when the skies are clear and the sun has a chance to heat the surface a little, casting hard bodied lures into the tops of the trees which line the creek beds in the lake often works well. The trick is to find the area or creek that is holding fish. One of the positives for winter Barra fishing is that if you find the fish they are often there in big numbers and they seem to hold at these areas for awhile. A good sounder certainly helps to locate fish and one of the new side imaging sounders is fantastic to find fish holding along the creek lines. I use a Humminbird 998 and pretty much all I have to do is drive up or beside the creeks to find if fish are in the area. The technique I generally use to target the fish in these deeper areas is to
I upgrade the hooks and split rings on the lures so this causes them to rise slowly and I find the slow floaters work best. A lot of the bites happen when the lure is just hanging there or when you first start to move the lure after the pause. It’s a pretty slow way to fish but it can be pretty full on as the lure is right amongst the snags when you get the bite. Suspending lures work well also but I find you really need a lure that floats a little to work it through the timber.

The shallow areas on the western side of the lake can also be productive through the cooler months. This is the area that the sun hits first in the morning so about mid morning when the water temp has started to rise, the Barra will often feed on these warmer points. As I said earlier, though light winds and calm conditions are important, in winter the water clears up quite a bit and these fish in the shallows can be really skittish, so it’s a good idea to work really quietly in the shallows and I usually drive in from a fair way out with the electric motor. For this reason I think it’s also better if you do long casts, so a lot of people use spin rods for this fishing. Personally I prefer to use a Baitcaster and if distance is a problem, a longer rod makes a big difference. A lot of lures will work but my favourites in the shallows are the Rapala X Raps and soft plastics like the Squidgie Slick Rigs. Generally the slower the retrieve the better but sometimes a quick moving lure will get a reaction out of the fish so it’s a good idea to vary the retrieve. Winter is certainly not my favourite time on the lake, but the fishing can be pretty good - especially when the weather holds for a while. These days are usually pretty few and far between but hopefully these few pointers will help find a few elusive winter-time Barra.

If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it; this is exactly the slogan you may think of when you see what John Flanagan (owner of Oscars Cafe) has done with his 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, and after a quick chat you will quickly see that, like his love of the old music, movies and lifestyle, naturally he would own one of the most classic cars of all time. The usual run would be to boast of the extensive custom work which has timelessly been put into re-creating this classic into a frenzy of horse driven power, but in this case, this immaculate vehicle has simply been fully restored and maintained, including taking the paint job back to the original ‘66 Mustang signature Acapulco Blue. “I’ve always been a strictly convertible person, and I’ve always just loved Mustangs. When I found this car almost two years ago, it was in the most original condition that I could find with full GT options... without being ‘candy-apple red’.” Maintaining an original is not as hard a task when it comes to the ‘stangs. Ford makes all replica parts available and it’s even possible to get an original looking stereo, in digital. Even keeping the original fully restored A-code 289, four-barrel carburetor V8 engine is not a problem with replica parts being available through dozens of companies only a website away. This reason is probably why you’ll find the 1964 -1968 Ford Mustang making the top cars to restore in most polls. “You can ring up someone for parts, and there’s replicas made for every single part of these Mustangs, everything you can imagine. To have these things restored is really not as hard as you think, you can buy everything brand new from the store, there’s no need to have things custom built unless you want to change it – and I don’t want to change a thing.” With the first Mustang stampede emerging from the production line in
1964, it sold over 22,000 before the day was out making it an instant hit and as the 60’s moved forward to 1968 Steve McQueen famously shot the Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Fastback into history and created a new wave demand for power and grunt. But all through this transitional era for the Mustang, John prefers the earlier models before it muscled up as his love for the class trumps the power. “The ‘67, ‘68 and ‘69 turned out a lot more of the muscle American Hot Rod style where as this model was designed as a cruising car, still having a V8 but without the over-the-top super-charged power that the car eventually progressed into.” Fresh out of the body-shop, this classic, along with its restored paint job and engine, the full black leather with black trim interior keeping to the original style, oozes class and sophistication and is once again ready to cruise the town. “I didn’t want this car to sit in the garage locked up just to look at, I bought it to drive so I’m not concerned if the kilometres get clocked up, a car like this is meant to be driven.” Besides the cosmetics being cut and polished regularly for its upkeep, not much else, according to John, will or even need to be touched up. Driving surprising well for a fifty year old car with the help of power steering, it holds to the ground via 1.4 tonne of old school metal creating a smooth ride.
I didn’t want this car to sit in the garage locked up just to look at, I bought it to drive so I’m not concerned if the kilometres get clocked up, a car like this is meant to be driven. 28 • www.coremag.com.au
“I could update and modernise some parts purely for safety reasons, for example this car still has the original drum brake system on it and maybe new suspension would be nice (though not needed), but as the car is now, it’s perfect for me and if I get time and more money down the track, I may start to do those sorts of things... but externally, nope – wouldn’t change a thing.” “I just love old cars, if I’d never have to drive a new car again, I’d be a happy man.” “How you feel when you drive it is the reason why you buy it, it’s a beautiful old car with the top down there’s no need to go fast because there’s not a care in the world.”

The early Mustangs have figured prominently in hundreds of notable films to date, beginning in 1964 with the James Bond movie Goldfinger, in which Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 chased a white Mustang convertible. The Mustang was premiered on April 17, 1964 at New York’s World Fair for the bargain price of $2,368! Independent rear suspension was actually considered for performance versions of the Mustang way back in the 60s.

Inked up Crusty Demon, tattoo artist and all-round awesome guy, SETH ENSLOW caught up with Sam from CORE Magazine while he was in Mackay recently. Talking all things tours, tattoos, stacks, the adrenalin rush, tricks, injuries and scars!
Hey Seth, great to have you Q down under again! What have you been up to on your trip? I flew in on March 13 to A Sydney and worked the Sexpo, then onto Melbourne for 10 days, back to Sydney for one night, then onto the Gold Coast. Heading to Townsville, then on to Perth! I’m in Perth for a few weeks then back to California. Basically putting ink on people that want me to tattoo them – it’s awesome.
Q
What did you do at the Sexpo in Sydney?
Oh, I mainly just hung out A and saw some cool shit [laughs]. Did some freestyle, took some photos and signed some autographs. It’s always fun to hang out with Porn Stars! So do you always come to Q Maiden Ink when you come to Mackay, or do you like to spread the love a little? Yeah, I don’t really know any A other shop owners here in Mackay. The first time I came to Mackay was to meet Mick [Aplin], and get tattooed by him. A couple of years ago I came here and he tattooed my head.
Q
How did you get into tattooing?
Well I was getting tattooed a A lot when I was in my early 20’s and then I just met a lot of 30 • www.coremag.com.au
tattoo artists over here, travelling around doing the Crusty tours. Just building relationships with these guys, plus drawing a lot when I was a kid, it was kinda always going to happen. I opened my own shop in 2002 with a few of my friends, who taught me how to tattoo and make the needles and all that.
Q
Do you have a favourite on your own body?
It’s hard to narrow it down, A I’m not really into favourites. I don’t have a favourite food or person I’ve met. It’s like whatever. I like all my tattoos, they’ve all got a different meanings and memories for me.
Q
Do you know how many you have?
No [laughs], I lost count A a long time ago! Pretty much covered from my neck down, just a little more to do on my back and then I’ll be totally body suited up! Where would you say is Q the most painful place to get tattooed? Uh across the feet and A armpits are pretty tender. Around your nipples is pretty tender. Inside your ass crack – like where your ass meets your thigh in the back there – that’s pretty tender [laughs].
Q
What about the clients? Aus Vs USA?
The clients? Um, well I A don’t think that there’s too many clients in USA that would want my signature tattooed on them, but there’s over 100 people that I’ve come across over here that want my signature tattooed on them, so that one difference there [laughs]. But I think its just a fad right now – everyone’s getting tattooed now – even girls.
Q
So how’d you get involved with Crusty Demons?
When I moved to California A after school, I just went for it and met the right people – I met Dana Nicholson and Cami Freeman who were making Creatures of Habit snowboarding videos, so when I met these guys, I was like ‘how the hell did I run into you of all people in California?’ They told me their plans to make the video with jumping dirt bikes instead of snowboards, and I just went shit yeah – that’s what the sport needs. We didn’t have anything like that – all the videos were instructions on how to race and talking about techniques. There was no action, adventure or people doing crazy shit, burning stuff and crashing. You’ve been labeled a Q hard man by many who have seen you at your best and worst - what goes through your head when you’re about to do a massive jump?
Well pretty much all that’s in A your head when you’re heading towards a ramp is your speed. Basically you’re just worried that you have enough speed to close the gap that’s set up. Once you leave the take off ramp, it’s done. The bullet is launched and you’re the bullet, so you know as soon as you leave the take-off ramp if you’re going to go too far or too short. If it’s shit, then you’re just thinking about how you’re going to land it without killing yourself. Ok, we have to ask, what Q the hell caused you to have the infamous stack in 1999? The bike broke [laughs]. The A bottom triple clamp that holds the forks on broke, it allowed the front end to rake out a bit, like a chopper, then that allowed the frame underneath the motor to dig into the ground. When I landed, intead of my head coming down behind the bars, as I was coming down, I flew into the bars and smashed by eyebrow and frontal sinus bone on the handlebars and crushed all the bone. The scar that was left was too small to operate through, so they had to cut me ear to ear and pull my face down. They took out the crushed bone and replaced it with metal and titanium. The crazy thing is that I know so many women who have had facelifts come up to me and say ‘look – We have the same
Didn’t take you long to Q come back from that - 4 weeks, until you set a new world indoor record with a 170ft jump in California! Nothing a couple of titanium plates couldn’t fix, eh? All doctors advise people not A to ride motorcycles – they see so much carnage going through their hospitals. They all see them as two wheel death machines. I crashed on Dec 22 1999, jumped Jan 22 ’00, exactly a month later, I jumped 175ft in the Housten Astrodome. My collarbone was still broken and I could still feel the bone floating around in there, but I had to do this jump, because I was contracted to do these monster truck shows around USA. If I missed one stop, then I’d lose
the whole contract. I did it, landed perfect – it was all good! After smashing Robbie Q Knievel (son of Evel Knievel’s) record, you broke your own world record for the longest Harley jump in Sydney in 2010, have you thought about going for it again? Nah, I think I’m done. Beaten A my personal best, so that’s enough for me.
Q
So what’s next in store for you?
Basically I just wanna start A working on a new movie with the footage from the last 10 years. A lot has happened, so I wanna catch people up on what’s new and what’s been happening and the real shit. I wanna make a collector’s box set of all three editions, where people can buy it and keep it on their mantle. You know, staying busy!

scar’ they grab my hand and stick it up on their head to make me feel it, and I’m just like ‘You bitches are crazy!’ The shit you girls go through to look hot – your fake tits, your fake lips, and your f**king facelifts.
From two wheels to four, it seems local racer Graham Moohin is a man who loves the combination of speed, dirt and danger. Starting out racing motorbikes in the renowned and beloved Enduro sport, Graham found the taste for the more reclined version of racing in 2008 when he and his brother, Brian Moohin, were asked by the Mackay Off Road Racing Club Inc. to hold an event on the property at “Retreat Station”. “After the event we were invited to have a run in the cars and from there we were hooked... that was my first time in an “Off Road Race Car”. Hosting the event on Brian’s property gave the two brothers the opportunity to pick the brains of the organisers and they were able to gather all the info they needed to get started in the N.Q. Off Road Super Series. Keeping it in the family, both planned to kick off their racing career by each purchasing a Polaris RZR 800 in 2009, which would be the first of their kind to be compliant, and raced in the CAMS Off Road Racing Series. “Once we found the Polaris, and with the support of the Mackay Off Road Racing Club, we applied to CAMS for approval to run the vehicles in the events and learned what modifications would need to be done to be able to run these vehicles in the events. It was quite an extensive process initially.” Although it may seem as some happy family teaming together to achieve a common goal, the two are actually fierce competitors, traveling together with their vehicles, it’s all-for-one-and-none-for-all as they shoot off on their separate ways at the start line to take the podium win. 32 • www.coremag.com.au
“I think I’ve beaten him more then he’s beaten me (laughs) but we’re pretty even, as last year we raced in a two day event in Mackay where after the two days there was only 2 seconds separating us. So we’re very competitive with each other.” In 2011 Graham took his love of the off road racing art to the books and provided assistance to the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport to create and write a new class for off road, designed specifically for SxS (side by side) racing for vehicles like the Polaris and Can Am. But of course, as all sportsmen know, the break you need to make it big and keep chasing the wins will only be achieved with the generosity of sponsorship. Enter Orionstone, a company that originated here in Mackay in 2003 and has grown nationally since to become the emerging leader in heavy earthmoving rental in Australia. Business Review Magazine noted the company as one of the fastest growing Australian companies in 2006 and 2010. It is a member of the Q400, Queensland’s largest private companies (ranked 20th), and is amongst the 500 largest private companies in Australia. The company believes it enhances the way in which mining companies utilise their capital resources and has a competitive advantage through reliability and customer service. “The company is pleased to continue to support Graham and his motorsport endeavors as the attributes that have made him a successful racer is also what makes him a very well regarded
Manager in our company” reflects Managing Director, Ashley Fraser. Joining the company in 2009, three years later the relationship is still strong, and will see Graham reach his goal and career high later this year. “The pinnacle at the moment was to race in the ARC [Australian Rally Championship] – Australian Side By Side Rally Challenge in May as this was the first year that the SxS class had been included in the ARC.” You can catch Graham go up against his brother Brian and nephews Peter & Greg when their freshly upgraded 2012 Polaris XP900’s hit the dirt at the 2012 North Queensland Off Road Championship in Mackay at the end of June, and see for yourselves which Moohin comes out ahead.

This month I’m back in the seat and taking the Nissan Maxima through its paces. I was given the 250 ST, which is classed as the base model. Nissan has taken some time to try and make the good thing better with the new look to the front, rear and interior to their mid size car the Maxima. Personally I’m not sure if it is a mid size sedan or large sedan, or is it a mid size sedan with large sedan capacity. The new look does remind me a bit of an older Merc. The inside has had a big reno with a new dash, full leather seating and trim, and bucket loads of room make it not too bad on the optical nerve. Everything is very well appointed with buttons for stereo and Bluetooth on the wheel, which are of course all very standard these days. The big thing though is the size of the boot, it is huge!!! There will be no worries throwing two sets of clubs in the back and still have room for the esky. The back seats don’t fold down though, but there is an access hatch through the rear seat arm rest.
that much better. The brakes are actually quite good and all the mod con gear makes her pull up pretty quick. As one would expect with front wheel drive, it does get a bit of understeer when driving out of corners. All and all on the road it is a good, comfy car and it does exactly what it is designed to do. It makes sitting in traffic as comfortable as possible which a lot of manufacture’s and designs fail to do. On the last lap; great, affordable comfy car with one bloody big boot!
The 2.5 litre V6 has a quite a bit of grunt and, although she is no race car, she still has plenty of get up and go for manoeuvring around vehicles on the highway. It is at this stage I can’t help but think how much the 3.5 litre would perform with 27% more power and 35% more torque on the more upper class models. The CVT (continuous variable transition) which technically is one variable gear, has six predetermined shift points. In the old days we would have called them gears. Whatever you would like to call it, it is smooth, really smooth. Nissan has also managed to keep the road and transmission noise to a whisper which makes the experience just 34 • www.coremag.com.au

Mining has given Mackay a solid reputation as the gateway to the resources boom but it is also quickly becoming a capital for something else – boats. Marine Queensland has announced the second Mackay Marine Festival incorporating the Mackay Tinnie and Tackle Show and Mackay leg of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships, on June 23rd and 24th, 2012. Adding to this year’s Marine Festival will be heaps of family fun in Mulherin Park, proudly being presented by North Queensland Bulk Ports. There will be rides for the kids, food and entertainment – something for everyone. With more exhibitors that last year, the 2012 event will feature products ranging from offshore fishing boats, tinnies, fibreglass boats, engines, PWC’s, marine electronics and accessories. Marine Queensland Events’ Manager Jason Plant said, forget the mining boom – Mackay was bursting with boats - the region boasting one of the state’s highest per capita boat ownership ratios with one boat registered for every 8 residents. Boat registration figures reveal last year’s event resulted in a 300% increase in new boat sales in the region. “Outside of the Gold Coast - Mackay has the highest number of boats per resident in Queensland,” Mr Plant said.
“The figure of 12% boat ownership in the region also makes it the highest in the state, with 95% of these boats being trailer boats 8m and under”. “Last year’s free event was an unparalleled success, highlighting just how popular boating in the region is and to support our members in the area by giving them an opportunity to showcase their products and services. “By putting on a festival solely dedicated to the on water lifestyle, we aimed to bring to the region the new product releases and the fishing talks and demonstrations that have been enjoyed by visitors to the southern based shows for years and Mackay residents certainly responded to that.”
38 • www.coremag.com.au
Thousands of boaties turned out in force for the 2011 two day event at Mackay’s Marina with sales exceeding dealer expectations. Reef Marine’s Greg Camilleri said although the mining boom was having an impact on the Mackay region, the interest in boating ran the cross spectrum of the whole industry. “Mackay is such a good fishing and boating area in Queensland that it doesn’t matter what sector you come from, there is significant interest,” Mr Camilleri said. “It is such a great thing for families to do together. Many generations – father and son will head on the water together so it has a solid reputation for bringing families together.” “Adding to that, Marine Queensland’s research has shown boating taps into the freedom from and freedom to in our lifestyles.” “The freedom from thinking about the mortgage while you are on the water and the freedom to get to somewhere else for the day – that has really become a big part of our busy lives.” Marine Queensland figures showed more than 55% of people attending the festival were as families, with more than half of those attending owning both a boat and a 4 wheel drive. Most said they came to see a new product. More than 70% of people surveyed said they used their boat mostly for fishing, with the majority heading out on the water every month. A staggering 95% gave the venue thumbs up with more than half of the people staying longer than half a day. The 2012 Mackay Marine Festival is proudly brought to you by Legra Mining and Engineering Services, presented by North Queensland Bulk Ports and the Australian Offshore Superboat Champions and is also supported by Mackay Marina (Port Binnli), Events Queensland, and Mackay Regional Council.
Mackay and the Whitsunday locals Chris and Brandon Frier have two very different loves - but both involve common denominator, H2O. On one hand the Frier brothers love to sit down and enjoy a relaxing afternoon or day fishing. On the other hand they love sending a 40ft 1000 horse power Supercat at 200 plus kilometres in seas that, let’s just say, the average man won’t go out in. The two brothers started competing in the fast paced sport of Supercat 1000hp class in 2009 and received the Rookies’ of the Year award. In 2010 they managed a very respectable, second place and last year took the title of Australian Champions in the Supercat 1000hp class. Chris and Brandon’s Maratimo is under close scrutineering by the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique), which is the governing body for all the offshore Superboat classes around the world and is based out of Europe. As with any motorsport, they are very strict on safety with an alloy roll cage, oxygen for the boys in case the shit hits the fan, and of course bloody big fire suppression systems. If one thing is not up to standard, there will be no racing for that meet. For the Supercat 1000hp class the boats must measure between 36 to 40ft, weigh in at least 4 tonne and must not exceed 525hp. The boats are mainly made of carbon fibre foam and honeycomb sandwich, which converts to very lightweight and really strong construction. The monsters on water run on an air cushion so very little of the boat is in the water, basically the surface piercing props and rudder and not a whole lot more. Then they fly off the top of waves before crashing into the next. 40 • www.coremag.com.au
They are designed to run on an air cushion and have spring loaded seats. The ride is no pleasure cruise, as gravity always wins and brings you back to earth with a thump. It’s pretty common for the boys to have aches and pains around their lower back and necks. They also tend to lose about 1 to 2 kilos per race as full race suit, helmets and a not very well ventilated cockpit tend to send temperatures through the roof. The Mackay and Whitsunday locals, who are by the way the youngest in the world to hold a championship, jumped back into the cockpit on the 22 April in Newcastle after the boat had some minor modifications, and both Mercruiser inboards were rebuilt. This was their first time back in the hot seat since all the works were completed in near perfect conditions (I certainly would take the tinny out) with 3.5 metre waves outside the harbour. They managed to come second in the fiercely fought competition, with one boat cracking a hull in the second race. Not a bad effort since they didn’t know how it was going to handle and learn how to drive the boat again after the modifications. The mods did make a big difference, they can now corner a lot tighter and faster than before. So when they return home to Mackay on the 22 and 23 June for Round 2, they are certainly hoping to be on the podium in the Number 1 position
this time. They also have six other teams who wish to take the title from them. So come and support your locals down at the Marina to cheer the boys on. The Mackay round also coincides with the boat show and Bulk Ports are putting on a concert in the park, so it should be a great weekend for all concerned. So where do you go from here? Well the only way is up and the boys are hoping to retain the championship this year and head over to the States, where they wish to race in Key West. Without going into too much detail, the open class is like typical American things, and means pretty much anything goes. There is also talk the boys would like to have a go in class 1, which is 38ft to 46ft and 970hp per side and speeds around 270kph. All I can say is good luck boys and good on ya for having a go.

Scott Bain, of Ocean Marine, grew up in a family of self confessed “fishing fanatics and mad keen boaties”. He says his son Jamie, co owner and manager of Ocean Marine, was “born with boating in his blood”, making it four generations of fishing fanatics. Scott & the team know that the key to a good day out on the water is having total confidence in your boat and being prepared. With years of experience, they know that “ensuring maintenance and upkeep in your boat is a priority”. Ocean Marine’s focus is providing quality servicing and sales support, and as Paul Elliott, Sales Manager, says “it’s going that extra mile and seeing most of our customers are regulars, we get to know the local boaties really well”.

Out in the boat, knocking back a few cold ones with your mates, reeling in a couple and the battery carks it – %&@! When you’re out on the water, your battery is your life so make sure you won’t get stuck or you’ll never live it down. Get your marine battery tested every six months at Battery World and next time you’re heading out, you’ll have peace of mind. Make sure you get two types of testing done – electrical and load. Your electrical test does a resistance test on the guts of your battery. This will tell you if you’ve got a dodgy cell, a good battery that just needs recharging or that you’re set to go. A load test puts a load on between the battery terminals, as if it was being started in the water. If your battery stays on fine for 15 to 20 seconds then you’re all good, but if the voltage goes down before you hit that mark – you’ve got a faulty battery on your hands and you don’t want to be boating with that.
SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY For superior vibration resistance and extended life. SOLID CAST CELL CONNECTIONS
P th
For increased durability and maximum plate height. TIGHTLY COMPRESSED CELLS For added vibration resistance.
A great battery to use is the Optima range, they’re a US AGM battery that’s sealed – which means it’s maintenance-free. Gives you more time to make sure you’ve got the other essentials sorted – food, grog, bait, grog, maybe a couple of rods, plenty of grog...
99.99% PURE LEAD
Also a good habit to get into is setting up an automatic battery charger for your boat. This way you’re constantly maintaining your battery, without having to do stuff-all. It’ll keep your battery in perfect condition, so the only thing you’ll have to worry about on the next trip is convincing your missus that you and the boys will behave this time.
ABSORBENT GLASS-MAT SEPARATORS
Spiralcell design allows for lead to be used in it’s puresr form.
Holds electrolyte like a sponge to eliminate acid spilling.

We caught up with Sean ‘Jock’ Campbell this month to talk out about his interesting life before starting in the mines.
Q
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Glasgow in A 1973 and grew up there until my older brother hit his teens. My parents decided to move because of the increasing crime rate. Drugs were also a big issue in and around Glasgow. I estimate that 40% of the kids I went to school with there were either involved in crime or drugs, or had died as a result of them. We only moved about 35kms away to Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. It doesn’t sound like far on Australian terms, but it was far enough away to avoid the problems while we grew up.
Q
They are pretty hard stats Jock. Was it really that bad?
Yeah, in one year, I went to A three friends’ funerals. That’s more than I lost in the army. The first night I got drunk in Glasgow, I got knifed. You only have to look at someone the wrong way. It’s bad alright!
Q
Can you tell us about your time in the army?
I was a reservist at eighteen A when I decided to join full time. I figured it would be a great opportunity to see more of the world. I was trained as an Assault & Pioneer Infantryman. It basically means I was the guy who had to locate mines and munitions that didn’t go ‘BANG’ when they were supposed to. It was a lot of fun. While in the army, I visited
46 • www.coremag.com.au
Germany and Canada.
Q
What came after the army?
It was during a great stay in A Canada that I thought there was something missing. I decided to leave the army and travel to Australia in 1996 on a working holiday. My big brother was already here in Mackay and told me there was so much opportunity, if you were prepared to work hard. My fiancee at the time was also an Aussie. I worked in a few engineering workshops as a trades assistant and trained as a semi-skilled fitter on some machines. In 1999, while working as a casual coal sampler at Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay, I did a scuba course. It became my new obsession and by 2002 I was working as a qualified dive instructor. It seems like you are pretty Q comfortable with diversity in your work. How did you go from scuba instructor to fitter in the mines? Get ready for a long one. A I became eligible for Aussie citizenship in 2003, so, even though I don’t really like boats, I decided to join the navy. I admit it was to get away from a terrible relationship at the time and I figured if I joined the army she would only follow. Plus, the fitness requirements are a lot lower in the navy. The navy gave me my trade qualifications as a mechanical
fitter, even though I didn’t spend too much time down below once I stepped up into the role of on board damage controller and shipped off to the Middle East. I left the navy in 2009. I was stationed in Sydney at the time, so I thought ‘you don’t leave the arsehole of Scotland to live in the arsehole of Australia’. I headed back to Mackay right in the middle of the GFC and couldn’t find any work for three months. It almost sent me broke and I had to do a lot of odd jobs to keep the family fed because I refused to take the dole. I eventually got a job reading meters for Ergon. It was a good job, if you don’t include the dogs. I’ve had more dog bites than I care to remember. During this time, my wife was sending applications out for fitter roles. She would’ve applied for 30-40 jobs before I got an interview. The job was with Terex/Bucyrus working between the workshop and out in the field. I spent a year there before getting my current job with Downer EDI at Millennium Mine. I nearly messed that up because when I got the call from Downer, I thought she said Downunder, as in labour hire, so I declined the interview stating I was looking for a permanent full-time placement.
Q
Will you tell us about your family?
Sure, I met my wife just A before I enlisted in the navy. I said we should get engaged just before I had to move to Melbourne. Lisa was a bit hesitant,
but gave in eventually and moved down after my recruit training. It wasn’t long before she fell pregnant with our eldest daughter Tahlia. It was then that we decided I’d do my time then get out of the navy, believing it wouldn’t be the best job for family life. Tahlia is now 7 and we have 3 year old Hamish, plus 8 month old Lucy. Together with Lisa, they are the most important part of my life. It is amazing the affect they have on you. I’d tried to give up smoking a hundred times with no luck. Possibly the 13 cups of coffee I had with my 20 ciggies a day didn’t help. I stopped in my tracks one night when my daughter, Tahlia, walked past me at home acting like she was smoking a crayon. She was only 3 at the time. I haven’t had a ciggy since. Do you have any advice Q for those looking for work in the mines? Yeah, don’t rely totally on A who you know to get you in there. Sure, there are times when this happens, but I think if you don’t apply for heaps of jobs, you may not get the one that fits you best. It’s kinda like when you are looking for a new girlfriend. You don’t leave the nightclub after one knock back do you?

Core Magazine caught up with local business owner and Director of ASAP! Any Signs and Printing, RACHEAL ATKINSON. This amazing 34-year-old mother of four is excited about her growing business and family, and her passion to give back to the community. Born in Manly NSW, Racheal the eldest of three children, spent most of her childhood “on the move”. Losing her biological father in a car accident, at only 14 months old, her mum remarried to her stepfather Peter Atkinson. Peter was in the army and this demanding job saw the family relocating nearly every year. “I attended 6 different schools in 7 years, no wonder I can’t sit still!” Racheal said. “I never thought I could settle down in one place. My life has taken me all over Australia and even a stint overseas. I was searching for something, and in some ways I still am and always will be. If you had to describe me in a few words, it would be easily bored!” Laughs. Racheal moved to the Whitsundays to be closer to her sister, Rebecca. “Our family is extremely close, even though we have spent most of our adult lives living far apart. I was going through a bit of a rough patch at the time, and wasn’t sure what my next step would be. I just needed to be close to her, I needed my best friend. Little did I know that this move would be the one that changed my life forever.” “Growing up I spent a lot of time with my late dad Peter. We would go camping and fishing together, and he taught me how to shoot, hunt and ride motorbikes. As a family this is how we spent our free time. He always said that I should have been born a boy! In some ways he was right, as I am not a girly girl, not at all, I am quite the opposite!” “When my sister asked me to help out at ASAP, it didn’t take long before I started to boycott the front office and phones, and she would always find me out the back with the boys. I loved cutting up the substrates, installing
50 • www.coremag.com.au
vehicle wraps, printing and being onsite. I quickly realised that I had finally found something that had the perfect combination of everything I loved, dirty, hard, physical work and people.” Just as her life was forever changing, so was her career. From her early days in Cairns in tour sales, to a remote region in WA, as a Duty Manager for a large hotel and nightclub venue, “nothing seemed to fit for me.” Maybe it was the name ASAP that grabbed her. As her friends say, ‘If Rach wants something, she wants it now!’ It wouldn’t be uncommon to find her washing her clubbie at 10 o’clock at night, or mowing her lawns, or getting her fix, with an addiction to gurneying. Most women couldn’t imagine having four kids, the youngest just 8 months old, a partner who works a 7 on / 7 off shift, running a growing business and a house that is always immaculate, with every possible surface power washed. It would seem crazy to us, but this is simply what she loves, and who she is, “this is me,” she said. “When the opportunity came up to purchase the business, I jumped at it, head first without a second thought, as I do.” Laughs. “Although I had some experience in business management, I knew I was in for a wild ride. The one thing I learnt quickly was that the foundation of your business is built on two things, your staff that stand beside you everyday, and your clients. I knew if I could surround myself with the right people, and ensure that my clients always felt apart of us, apart of ASAP, that I could make it work. Who in life dosen’t have challenges? I am faced with new ones everyday. I am still growing and learning and this is what gets me out of bed.”
Issue 10 • 2012 • 51
“Put in this way, I am no longer bored. My everyday life is a challenge, and I wouldn’t change any of it, nothing at all!” With two successful stores in Mackay and Cannonvale, you could say that she is doing a great job of making it work. ASAP has begun its expansion into the mining industry, and with a number of key clients already onboard, it seems nothing will stand in her way. “As we grow, I want to ensure that my current clients still receive the quality and standard they are accustomed to. With ASAP, every client is important, no matter how big or small. With a new crew dedicated to servicing the mining industry, I am excited for this new stage. I have the most amazing staff, we laugh everyday, even when we feel like crying, and a loyal clientele base that is growing faster than I ever imagined, a partner who believes in me and everything I want out of life, the most amazing children who are my world, and a support network of friends and family who make it possible.” There is no doubt that Racheal will succeed in her business venture, with the drive and ambition rarely found, but always desired, and a heart of gold, a person who finds the most joy in giving to everyone around her, how can she fail? So next time you are in need of signage, give Rach a call. One thing you can be sure of, she may not answer the phone, but she will be the one making and installing your signs onsite.

It’s tax time again, and if you’re a Tradie, you may be entitled to several additional tax benefits that could make your return a little more satisfying. Here are some extra tips that occasionally may be forgotten, and could save you those extra dollars. YOUR CAR
PART OF A UNION?
If you have to carry bulky equipment and / or machinery that you can’t leave at work for any reason, you may be able to claim travel expenses. Also if you drive between work sites or make deliveries and run errands with your own car including site inspections, keep a record and receipts, as these are claimable expenses. Remember, if you’re claiming travel expenses as well, to choose one of the four methods for record keeping; cents per kilometre, a logbook, 12% of original value or one-third of actual expenses.
You can claim a deduction on these fees and can also claim a deduction for a levy paid in some certain circumstances. But you cannot claim a deduction on amounts paid in situations like being laid off or from financial loss from a strike etc.
YOUR CLOTHES
Just keep in mind with any deductions you make, the ATO advises to keep to these basic rules:
Protective clothing required for your work, like boots or hard hats, are deductible expenses, as well as compulsory and registered uniforms. You can also claim laundry allowances on your clothes (given the grunt they receive in this town should be a must!); just remember to keep receipts if your claims exceed $150. Keep in mind this is strictly necessary protective clothing and does not include conventional clothing i.e. sneakers, shorts, t-shirts etc.
YOUR TOOLS Tools are always a good tax deduction for all Tradesmen, but if you’re an employee you can claim any tool under $300 outright or if over $300, a depreciated amount can be claimed. The guide to depreciating assets can be found on the ATO website.
YOUR PHONE If you can show you use your phone (including mobile) for work purposes, like regularly calling your work or clients away from the work site or are also on-call, you can claim a deduction from your phone rental. If you use your phone mainly for private use, but sometimes require it for work related calls, you can then claim a deduction for cost of the calls as well. 54 • www.coremag.com.au
WORK IN THE SUN? If your job requires you to work outside in the sun for some part or all of the day, your purchase of sunglasses, sunhats and sunscreen are also deductible items.
• must claim the deduction in the same income year that you made the purchase • can’t claim an expense that you have been, or will be, reimbursed for • may have to substantiate your claims with written evidence • apply different rules for expenses where you prepay for a service that extends beyond the current income year. Although it’s always said to keep the receipts, the ATO is moving up in the world of course and this is not necessarily the case. Written evidence, it now advises, can be in the form of bank or credit statements, email receipts, BPAY reference numbers, your PAYG summary to claim union fees and also, you can keep a diary for all claims under $10 like parking fees that do not give receipts. And also keep in mind, that you must keep written evidence for five years from the date you lodge your tax return (except in the case of a depreciating item which you must keep the record for the entire time of its depreciation), so it’s always advised to electronically back up all your written evidence - it makes life a lot easier!

Whitsunday Coast Airport is proud to announce an exciting new Fly in Fly out (FIFO) campaign and survey for the region.

The strategic partnership between Whitsunday Coast Airport and AVMIN leverages off the newly redeveloped airport facility and complements the recently introduced weekly FIFO charter. Whitsunday Coast Airport General Manager Business Development, Scott Waters, said, “It continues to be an exciting time for the Airport and the region. Today’s launch of the FIFO campaign is the next step in growing this important market segment.” “As a region and an Airport we’re unique, in that the Whitsundays is the only region in the state with a revolving FIFO link. The region will require inbound FIFO services supporting mines in Collinsville and future construction of Abbot Point, but also we’re working towards providing outbound FIFO services to the North West Mineral Province, Bowen, Surat and the future Galilee Basin,” Mr Waters added. The region has seen a surge in mining families moving to the Whitsundays due to its overall liveability and affordability. As a result Whitsunday Coast Airport has launched a specific campaign to understand the market better and tailor make FIFO options to meet the growing demand. Enabling workers to spend more time with their families at home and fly, rather than drive, is critical to the liveability of miners who currently live or are wanting to live in the region. To achieve this, Whitsunday Coast Airport has formed a partnership with AVMIN - aviation and mining specialists to assist in ascertaining this growing market. AVMIN’s Director Paul O’Brien says, “AVMIN is delighted to form a partnership with an emerging airport of significance such as Whitsunday Coast.” “The $49 billion in major projects planned for the Whitsunday region will require a high degree of inbound FIFO workers, particularly around the construction phase of these projects. Providing a FIFO link to and from the Whitsundays to mining regions will enable a balance and, more importantly, choice for workers and their families, while positively impacting the Whitsundays economy.” The first phase of the FIFO campaign is based around a unique online survey which is available through www.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au. The survey’s aim is to collate as much information as possible from residents within the Whitsunday region who currently work in the Bowen Basin and commute on a Drive in - Drive out / Bus in - Bus out basis. The results will form business cases to increase direct flights to locations such as Clermont, Middlemount, Moranbah, Alpha, Emerald and more.
Entries must be submitted by the 11th June, 2012. Prize not transferrable nor refundable for cash. Date for game to be finalised. Terms & Conditions apply. For more information contact Tolita on 0458 016 574 or tolita@avmin.com.au
Implementation of these flights will assist the region’s workforce who commute via road with a much safer option by managing fatigue. Taking an employee off the road for an average of 4 hours each way and providing a 30 to 40 minute flight, greatly benefits the employee, their families and the employer as well as reducing the chance of incidents or accidents on our roads.

Precise Corporation saw its beginnings in 2000, known back then as Precise Maintenance, and has since become one of Mackay’s most successful companies servicing the mining industry. Offering on and off site services, Precise spreads it specialties to human resources, fleet maintenance, field services, workshop repairs, truck repairs and even truck bling. Needless to say, going from sole trader to large corporation in a relatively short time is impressive, but the company’s founder, owner and operator Ashleigh Rowe says the key to success is honesty, respect and appreciation. Starting his first job at 14 changing tyres in a workshop, Ashleigh began this classic rags-to-riches story by landing himself an apprenticeship in Gladstone as an automotive mechanic and then later extended his training to include diesel fitting. Coming from nothing gave him the drive for hard work, the building blocks for success and the ability to appreciate every opportunity that came his way. Once qualified, he began working around the country as far as Western Australia, until he finally returned to Queensland where he found a major shortage and high demand for skilled and quality tradesman. “After being continuously asked to go out on my own, I gave it about a year before deciding I should give it a go. I already had a Nissan Patrol so basically all I did was register a business, go out and buy an invoice book from the local newsagent and start.”

“One of my first jobs was to put an excavator together for a company which was supposed to be a three day job; they ended up keeping me there for one and a half years.” With high demands, Ashleigh was able to hire three other employees to help him with the workload which enabled him to pursue and complete further jobs and begin the road to success, including creating businesses in Moranbah and Nebo. Starting your own maintenance business in Moranbah would seem like the ideal and smart way to play the mining boom, but apparently not when integrity and workmanship come into play. Although he had 150 people working for him, as well as a two rapidly expanding companies (Nebo and Moranbah), business out west was a lot more cut-throat than expected. “After building and then running the workshop for over a year at Moranbah, business was lucrative but our employees were using it as a stepping stone into the mines. Other businesses were saying our guys were no good, then the next week they’d have them working for them... It’s a little disheartening and it was not the business that I wanted to be in.” Finding good, hard-working, loyal employees can be a challenge for any
entrepreneur, but out west, the situation for keeping happy employees combined with the costs involved can be extra demanding. After being approached by several real estates and having the real value of the facility revealed, he decided to sell up his Moranbah workshop and move into Mackay. Here, he set up Precise Corporation and was able to branch out into a number of services and create the business culture he had envisioned for years. “A lot of smaller companies do things better by appreciating their workforce as opposed to the larger who see their employees as just a number and if they leave they don’t even notice... Having a large corporation divided into many smaller businesses we are able to create real team environments, have some barbeques, take the crews out to dinner or over to the islands and it’s really appreciated.” “Looking after employees and making sure that they are happy and doing something that they want to do is a win-win situation. If they have a job that they’re happy with, they take more pride in their work and it gets done properly the first time, which then makes the customer happy, which ultimately makes me happy.” “Over the past few years the majority of my time has been spent turning my own 50 acre property into a complete Moto Park. Incorporating a world class freestyle compound, a 1.6km QLD spec MotoX track, 2km enduro loop, several hill climbs, a 350 square metre concrete burnout pad, landscaped dam with wakeboard winch pull all with bitumen drive access.” Ash’s first major event was held on Saturday 26th May where he hosted the first round of the Australian RFD Underground Freestyle competition, which is the largest FMX Series in Australia.

Remember when you first decided that you wanted to be your own boss and start working for yourself? Remember making a business plan, maybe chucking in a bit about making a logo and having a website? Did you ever get much further than that? You need to!
NE
START WITH THE BASICS What is your business about and what do you want your customers to think of you? Now, does your corporate image (your advertising/logo/stationery etc) reinforce what you are trying to put across about your business? If you’re not sure, the answer is no. Whether you want your rep to be based on reliability, new ideas, traditional values, affordable pricing – tie it all in together and put it into a plan. Then all you have to do is make sure you follow it. It also helps if you dust off your marketing plan at least once a year and have a look to see that you’re on track – but also to check out what new opportunities have come up that you might be able to take advantage of. Great example – social media. Ok so not everyone is fussed about Facebook or tweeting on Twitter, but these aren’t the only examples of new, FREE or VERY CHEAP ways to promote your business and connect with regular and potential clients.
Is labour hire part of your gig? Jump onto ‘Linked In’ and start making contact with potential employees that catch your eye.
How about a landscaping business? Stick a blog on your website and give seasonal, local, expert advice on design, planting etc.
Got your own mechanics workshop? Get your mates to take a video of you cutting sic in a sweet V8 and upload it to YouTube, linking it back to your business of course!

Dr Gert Maree and Dr David Cleveland from Occupational Health Alliance in Paget are two local Doctors taking on a ground breaking mission to tackle obesity within our community. Obesity is not only a risk to people’s health but is also an issue in the workplace with companies starting to put weight restrictions on employment. Recognising this, these two professionals have developed a new medical service targeting people who want help in managing their weight problem with an individually tailored program. “We came together and both had a common interest in this problem. There are numerous diets, drugs and programs out there, but for many people these are not working and obesity is still on the rise. We saw the need to create a weight management program specifically designed to help people change their lifestyle.” “Worldwide statistics have shown that a large percentage of those who go on a diet end up weighing 10 – 20% more then they have ever weighed two years after they cease the diet. It was found that the main reason for this was that they did not change their lifestyle.” “If you could put into one sentence what we are aiming for with the program, it would be: ‘we aim to change lifestyle.” Dr Gert Maree has had experience with a similar program in South Africa for eight years, attending numerous courses and collecting research which has enabled him to create a similar program for the locals in Mackay. Dr Maree says that during the eight years of his research nothing has changed significantly regarding the obesity trend and this has prompted him and Dr Cleveland to take action. With the knowledge and experience they’ve accumulated, they have created a new, simple and realistic, weight management program.
“The benefits of this method over other weight loss programs are that when you join this program your risks are identified, and managed. You are seen by a physician who is able to recognise what the implications of these risks are as a result of the obesity. With the multitude of complications that can occur, it is so important to understand and identify these risks.” Obesity is well known to be one of the leading causes associated with health problems and lowered life expectancy. In fact, obesity is the fifth leading cause of death on a global basis and causes at least 2.8 million deaths each year. It is now linked to more deaths worldwide than famine. Other risks associated with obesity include cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke, which were the leading cause of death in 2008), diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon) along with erectile dysfunction and prostate disease in men. Dr Gert Maree and Dr David Cleveland are based at Occupational Health Alliance, on Caterpillar Drive in Paget.
“This is new in the fact that it’s an amalgamation of current trends and thoughts about obesity management, but we’re not reinventing the wheel, we’re applying a scientific approach to it.”
The scientific approach is an original design by these local Doctors. It offers more than the basic nutritional advice, BMI, body measurements and exercise routines that are part of a normal weight loss program. This program goes further by assessing each individual’s risk factors and develops a targeted program for them. As we all know, every body is different and has various reasons for weight gain. These Doctors find specifically where and what the problem is and offer what you could call a ‘Lifestyle Prescription.’ “With the right tests, you can find out anything and everything about your body. It is like a mathematical equation. We just find out what your individual needs are, and develop a goal to treat anything from class 3 obesity, to a basic beer belly and even the excess stomach fat that results from pregnancy - it can be done.”
We came together and both had a common interest in this problem. There are numerous diets, drugs and programs out there, but for many people these are not working and obesity is still on the rise. We saw the need to create a weight management program specifically designed to help people change their lifestyle. 62 • www.coremag.com.au
This weight management program, which is being implemented from June, is open to all. It is designed to help you for life but there are no contracts or obligations. The Doctors do not aim to replace your normal family physician but aim to help you attain your desired lifestyle changes.
“ Once we administer all the necessary health tests, if we find anything unusual or concerning we will give all the results and information to you to pass onto your own GP for further treatment.” You are given a folder detailing your tailor-made weight loss and management program, which helps you plot and keep track of your weight loss journey including the results of each consultation. The clinic also offers detection, treatment and, if necessary, removal of complicated skin lesions from all locations on the body including the face, nose, ears and eyelids, etc. The Doctors have years of experience in the field of skin diagnostics and removal of skin cancers and aim to have these procedures accessible to the public for reasonable and affordable prices to help aid the early detection and treatment of the consequences of the Queensland sun.
Having intuitive doctors such as this, providing a groundbreaking program, is truly inspiring and puts Mackay at the cutting edge in health services. This is a fantastic opportunity for our locals to take the step and make a healthy change for the better. TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT CALL 07 49525100 AND ASK FOR A WEIGHT MANAGEMENT CONSULTATION

With Queenslanders having the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, protecting yourself (and your loved ones) from the sun has never been more important. When it comes to sunscreens, how do you choose the right one for you? CORE’s been the guinea pig to see which sunscreen is best.
Le Tan Sports Gel SPF30+ Banana Boat Everyday SPF30+ Sunscreen Lightweight and fast absorbing, this one is perfect for everyday use – and it won’t leave your skin feeling like you’ve been rolling in something sticky.
Nivea Ultra Beach Protect Spray Ideal for use at the beach or out on the water fishing, when UV rays can be 25% greater with reflection from sand and the water. A non-greasy formula that contains rich moisturisers to replenish the skin and protects it from the drying effects of the beach and water.
This very high protection sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection against premature ageing UVA and burning UVB rays and is 2 hours water-resistant, making it perfect for any sport under the sun.
Cancer Council Toddler Sunscreen SPF 30+ Now one for the kids - a fragrance free sunscreen milk, for delicate skin. This broad spectrum UVA+UVB protection milk contains only Titanium Oxide as the active ingredient. Possibly the best feature of this one, is that it goes on green and rubs in clear.
The simple Slip Slop Slap rules that everyone should follow when it comes to keeping your skin from looking like leather:
Slip on a shirt! Choose clothing that: • Covers as much skin as possible e.g. long sleeves and high necks/collars – especially when fishing! • Is made from close weave materials such as cotton, polyester/cotton and linen. • Is dark in colour to absorb UV rays. White and lighter colours reflect UV onto skin. • If used for swimming, is made from materials such as lycra, which stays sun protective when wet.
Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen! Make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum and water-resistant. Sunscreen should not be used to increase the amount of time you spend in the sun and should always be used with other forms of protection. Apply sunscreen liberally to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
Slap on a Hat! This is a pretty standard (and the easiest) way to protect yourself from that burning ball of fire in the sky. Plus, don’t forget the sunnies! Source : Cancer Council Queensland

It’s official- your missus, your workmates and your friends are sick of you complaining about your sore feet and legs! If you have a job where you need to stand or walk for long periods, you know how important it is to have good foot health. It’s amazing how debilitating an injury to your feet or legs can be, causing both physical and financial strain. According to WorkCover Queensland, foot and leg injuries account for 19% of workplace injuries and an average of 10.8 weeks is taken off by people with foot and ankle injuries. The most suprising part is that many people put up with pain and inconvenience of foot injuries when they can be fixed and prevented quite easily, once you have the right diagnosis and treatment by a podiatrist. People who spend a long time on their feet are particularly susceptible to foot and ankle injuries, and any imbalance in foot function, such as high arches or flat feet, combined with a hard and heavy workload, is a recipe for injury. Common injuries include plantar fasciitis (causing heel and arch pain), tendonitis (causing foot, ankle and calf pain), neuroma and metatarsal capsulitis (causing ball of the foot pain). Other work related conditions include ingrown toenails and corns (hard lumps of skin under the feet or on toes). All these conditions cause serious pain, and they all can be simply and effectively treated by a podiatrist. Certain medical conditions can specifically affect feet in different ways, and this can complicate things. Diabetes, types 1 and 2 are conditions that can wreak havoc on the arteries and nerves in the foot and lower leg, causing vascular disease (poor blood flow) and peripheral neuropathy (numbness in feet). Obviously, having numb feet with poor circulation is not good, however with good assesment and correct footwear and pressure relief we can prevent serious complications such as ulceration (wounds on the feet) and amputation. Joint conditions, such as gout, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, can show up in the feet and cause pain when standing or walking for long periods. We can reduce the stress to overloaded foot and leg joints by using our custom foot orthotics (arch supports).
WORK A PAIN?
Another little known fact is how much your feet affect the rest of your body. Many chronic overuse injuries can be attributed to poor foot function. For example if your feet excessively pronate (arch collapses, ankle rolls in) this causes a chain reaction up the leg which can be responsible for symptoms such as sacroillic pain (lower back), trochenteric bursitis (hip pain), illiotibial band syndrome (outside of knee pain), medial tibial stress syndrome and posterior tibial tendonitis (shin pain). Our feet are complex machines containing at least 26 bones, 30 ligaments and many muscles all working together. Understanding foot function and anatomy is a specialised field in which podiatrists are uniquely skilled to provide the diagnosis and treatment of associated injuries.
Prevention is better than cure As many foot problems are due to incorrect foot function, if you correct this function with custom designed foot supports (orthotics) then the problem will go away and stay away. At Pioneer Podiatry we effectively treat many causes of foot pain everyday using our custom foot orthotics. At Pioneer Podiatry our orthotics are effective, comfortable and long lasting. Custom orthtoics are a very cost effective treatment as they treat and prevent many foot and leg conditions for many years before they need replacing. Most health funds will pay for custom orthotics, and we have on site HICAPS facilities to claim directly.
speak to the feet experts Sore feet can make your day a misery, or even mean time off in recovery. Correcting incorrect foot function with our custom designed foot orthotics (arch supports) is an effective solution to get you back to work pain free and to prevent reoccurrence in the future.

Instead of taking your holidays at home, where obligations can interrupt your break, get out of your comfort zone. Experiencing new surroundings stimulates your brain to form new connections. Furthermore, completely disengaging from work for a short period of time can significantly reduce stress levels, which in turns lowers your chance of chronic illness.
Flying solo? Think Port Douglas. Take a time out(side): hike the ‘Devil’s Thumb’, ride the historic ‘Bump Track’, walkabout the Daintree Rainforest, kitesurf at Four Mile Beach, and hand-glide over the reef.
Got a co-pilot? Think Adelaide. Grab your partner and explore the many regional vineyards, walk along one of Australia’s only coroongs, take in the Art Gallery of South Australia, check out the Clipsal 500 Adelaide V8 super car races, see the only giant pandas in the southern hemisphere, relax on the beaches at Glenelg, and dine on world class cuisine.
Traveling with a family? Think Gold Coast. Take the kids to theme park Dreamworld, spend an afternoon in the sun and surf at Wet ‘n’ Wild Water World or revel in cinematic delights at Warner Bros. Movie World. While the little ones are at surf school, treat yourself to a visit to the Australian Shooting Academy and treat the beloved mother of your children to the many Arts and Crafts markets in the region.
Often what keeps us at home instead of on the road is the cost of travel. Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive; just swap conventional options for more economic ones. Swap flying with driving and swap hotels with hostels. Hostels run from $30 per night, in comparison to $100+ per night for most hotels. Other tips from frugal travelers include purchasing foods from markets to prepare simple meals instead of eating out. For example, purchase a cooked chicken, bagged salad and Caesar dressing to make a bang up dinner for at least half the cost of eating the same meal at a restaurant. Plus don’t forget to search out discounts for tours and activities. Ask about the special ‘local’ rates tour operators offer if you live within the region. 66 • www.coremag.com.au
Can’t escape the stress of work? Take mini-holidays from your desk. The power walker: Prolonged sitting has been found to contribute to the risk of heart failure and other chronic diseases. On your lunch break, grab your iPhone or iPod, crank the tunes, and get moving. The virtual traveller: Stimulate your mind with videos from the National Geographic Channel (http://natgeotv.com.au/). Get carried away watching ‘The Deadliest Journeys’, ‘Kingdom of the Blue Whale’, or ‘Roadtrip of a Lifetime’. The avid gamer: Everyone’s heard of the games room at the Google headquarters. They’re onto something. Playing a game on your lunch break, whether it’s 2-on-2 basketball or Angry Birds, helps to stimulate the problem solving side of your brain. What’s more, the feeling of satisfaction we get from completing challenges in games can result in a sense of calm and contentment.

BODDINGTON ST
Ok, let’s break down the science of farting. Farting, also known as flatulence or letting one rip, is the act of expelling intestinal gas from the rear end. There are many causes for this magical process, including the air we swallow or gas produced by chemical reactions in our guts, just to name a few. Heard of the saying: “Whoever smelt it, dealt it”? Well here’s a quick tip to weed
out the guilty culprit: the farter is most likely the one who smells it last. This is because the fart is propelled away from the body in the opposite direction of the farter’s nose (unless the fart happens upwind).
Beefy Sounds loud, and will probably stink like a cross between roadkill left out in the sun and a dog turd.
Eggy Has a powerful stench of rotten eggs. This one tends to clear a room very quickly. Can either be silent or loud.
Escape Pod The one you think you got away with. Forced out as silently as possible, you assume nobody heard. You try as discreetly as possible to detect any hint of smell, but nothing comes up. Then 30 seconds later, everyone starts to cough and sputter. You point to the person next to you and try to look innocent.
Not Now! You feel the rumbling of a mighty fart, but are unable to release it due to your situation. This one happens commonly on first dates, at important meetings, and on other such inexcusable occasions. You clench your buttocks together so hard that you nearly give yourself a stroke, and wait for the pressure to subside.
Squeaky Sounds like ‘Wheeek’. Normally smells foul.
Dutch Oven This special event should be saved for the most valued in your life…or even better – when you’re having an argument in bed and need to get even with the person you’re fighting with. The more sneaky the fart, the better. This favourite is most effective when ‘silent but deadly’, as to not warn your prey.

Bowel cancer, one of our nation’s biggest killers, but simple tests are making it easier to detect and treat. However, it’s important to understand the warning signs and get them treated early. Bowel cancer is the second most common form of cancer in Australia, only surpassed by prostate cancer. However, bowel cancer can be treated successfully if detected in its early stages.
HOW DOES BOWEL CANCER DEVELOP?
SO HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM AT RISK?
According to the Federal Department of Health and Aging, currently fewer than 40 per cent of bowel cancers are detected early.
Bowel cancer is a malignant growth that develops most commonly inside the large bowel. Most bowel cancers develop from tiny growths inside the colon or rectum called polyps. Not all polyps become cancerous. If polyps are removed, the risk of bowel cancer is reduced.
According to the Federal Department of Health and Aging, you have a greater risk of developing bowel cancer if you:
That means if you have any concerns it’s important to do something about it right now.
ARE THERE ANY SYMPTOMS?
SO WHAT IS THE BOWEL AND WHAT DOES IT DO? The bowel is part of the food digestive system. It connects the stomach to the anus, where waste materials (called a bowel motion or faeces) are passed out of the body. The function of the bowel is to finish digesting food by absorbing water and nutrients.
Cancer can be present without symptoms, but some things to look out for include: bleeding from the rectum or after a bowel movement, changes in bowel habits (like going to the toilet more frequently or loose stools), frequent gas pains, unexplained tiredness and abdominal pain. For more info visit: bowelcancer.org.au or health.gov.au.
• Are aged 50 years and over, (your risk increases with age); • Have a significant family history of bowel cancer or polyps; • Have had an inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis; or • Have previously had special types of polyps, called adenomas, in the bowel.
WHAT NEXT? While bowel cancer is more prevalent in men and women over the age of 50, you are never too young to get tested. See your GP immediately if you have any concerns and they can arrange a simple test.

Platform: PC, X360 / Released: 17 April Genre: Action Role Playing Game / Rating: MA15+
I’m going to start by saying this is not one to play with kids around. It’s MA15+ rating is well deserved. As well as being sufficiently violent, our monster-slaying mutant hero, Geralt, gets himself involved in some, ahem, “intimate” moments. The storyline in The Witcher 2 is complex. You don’t want to tune out or skip the dialogue (not that you would anyway... right??), as you will need to make big decisions that greatly alter the direction and outcome of this brilliant tale. There are numerous side quests ranging from simple (yet time consuming) to horrendously difficult (read: character building). During a conversation you can intimidate, persuade or bribe your way to gaining what you need. The combat is fun and simple to control, with a good number of weapons accompanying your two Witcher’s Swords (steel for humans, elves, gnomes and silver for monsters). These include traps, bombs, and magical “signs” that have different effects on your enemies. There is automatic targeting that helps Geralt leap and roll from one enemy to another with a graceful fluidity. Drinking potions mixed from collected ingredients can assist with the big boss battles, as can sword and armour upgrades. Your Geralt is customisable with Swordsmanship, Mage and Alchemy upgrade paths to follow. You
can even change his hairstyle. But the most exciting part of this character is being able to control his behaviour. He can be a saviour or a menace, as empathetic as you like. And each decision has it’s own consequence on both the characters round him and the story as a whole. These decisions are not easy, and the characters are real enough that it’s easy to see the point of view from every side. Who do you trust? What are their real motives? It’s so hard to know if you are doing the right thing, and that’s exciting. Chronic auto-savers beware! When you die, you really die. It’s not unusual to lose a boss battle and, on reloading, be sent back to the very beginning of the quest. Learn to save, save, save and it will relieve a lot of frustration. Being an action based role-playing game, the pace is fast and there is always something exciting to do, with the distance between quests minimal. The voice acting is superb. There is drama, humour, mystery and even romance, with believable, interesting characters. And it even looks good on Xbox! Seriously.
What to get your hands on now! Max Payne 3 (PS3, X360 - PC later this month) Rockstar games have been pretty tight lipped on info about the Max Payne, 8 years after the last release. My prediction: AWESOME! Diablo III (PC) By the time you read this I’ll be playing Diablo III. And I probably won’t have left the house for a few weeks. Did you know Coles delivers?
Coming this month... Lollipop Chainsaw (PS3, X360): Zombies! Chainsaws! Girls with chainsaws killing zombies! What more do you want? This action game seriously pushes the limits of it’s MA15+ rating. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (PS3, X360, PC, Wii, DS, 3DS): Look, I know it’s meant to be a kid’s game but the Lego series are actually really good, with solid gameplay and endearing characters. Plus it’s got Wonder Woman in it! 72 • www.coremag.com.au
