Amy Findlay Lead vocals, drums, Hannah Findlay Guitar, Sarah Findlay Keys, vocals, Holly Findlay Bass
Four sisters from a rural township north of Melbourne bring psychedelic rock to stages in Oz and around the world. After winning the Triple J Unearthed High contest back in 2010, psych-rock band Stonefield launched into the international music scene, playing the Glastonbury Festival - one of the biggest music festivals in the world - and the Sunset Strip Music Festival in L.A. CORE magazine caught up with Hannah from Stonefield about their recent success, great gigs and new EP.
Q
How would you describe Stonefield’s sound?
We’re influenced a lot by A 60s and 70s rock bands, like Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix and Frank Zappa. It’s all those sorts of sounds and our interpretation of it. Since we’ve been touring, we’ve been introduced to a lot of new bands that have influenced us, but really it’s always gone back to the bands we started off with. Stonefield is a sibling band Q made up of four sisters ranging in age from 13-21. What’s it like to be in an all-girl family band. I think it’s good. A lot A of people wonder if there are problems with us being sisters, but we find it fun and get along well. Some people say that you can’t be an all-girl band playing the music that we do, but mostly people have been really positive.
10 • www.coremag.com.au
Q
Tell us about the song writing process.
Usually one of us will bring A in an idea, like a riff or a chord progression, and then we just jam it out until a song comes out of it.
Q
What’s been the highlight of your musical career so far?
There have been many A highlights for us. I think the one that made it all happen was winning the Triple J Unearthed High competition, which was completely unexpected. Then playing at Glastonbury was really amazing, and going to L.A to play the Sunset Strip was great.
Q
What’s your favourite song to cover?
Probably a ‘Whole Lotta A Love’ by Led Zeppelin, which we played at Glastonbury.
Q
A
Q
Which Zeppelin album do you think is the best? It’s hard to decide; either House of the Holy or Zeppelin 2. Tell us about your recent gigs.
We just finished doing our A national tour and then did support for the Jebediah tour. We opened for the Foo Fighters in early December 2011, which was really exciting. We also played Big Day Out. I’ve been there a couple of times before and I could never have imagined that we’d be playing there.
Q
What can we expect from Stonefield’s upcoming EP?
We recorded in December A 2011 and we hope to have a new EP out soon. The EP will have four tracks, including ‘Yes master’ and ‘Black water rising’. Once
the EP is out, hopefully we’ll have the chance to tour and play up in Queensland again.
Q
What’s the big dream for Stonefield?
We just want to keep on A playing for as long as we can for as many people as we can.

THE
The Fearless Vampire Killers revive Aussie garage-rock and surf-pop with their debut album Batmania. Hailing from Melbourne, The Fearless Vampire Killers have toured with the likes of Kasabian, The Hives and The Mars Volta. Their debut album Batmania is packed full of infectious tracks that have garage-surf flavour, perfect for a weekend party. CORE magazine shared fifteen minutes of fun with bassist Jacob McGuffie discussing Batmania, a debut that was years in the making. How did The Fearless Q Vampire Killers form? The band was started by the A two original members, Seán and Al when they were in high school. They wanted to put the band together for a battle of the bands or something like that, your typical high school band story. With four members, they started playing around Melbourne and it evolved with a few line up changes over the past six years. What’s the story behind the Q band name? The name came straight from A the 1967 Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers. Seán was doing Year 11 Media at high school and they had to watch that in class. Seán came out of class and said he wanted to call the band ‘The Fearless Vampire Killers’ and the other guys said that it was the worst band name 12 • www.coremag.com.au
they’d ever heard, but it just stuck. I think it’s turned out really well for us; it’s a nice long name, it takes up a lot of space on posters and people tend to remember it.
Q
Who are your musical influences?
We love The Beatles - they’re A the common denominator among all the band members - as well as The Rolling Stones and The Kinks. We’re also heavily influenced by a lot of surf bands - I particularly like The Atlantics - and western music, like the soundtrack from The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. Your long-awaited debut Q album Batmania is finally on shelves. What can fans expect from it? It’s like a 21st speech, a A quick rundown on what the band’s all about. I think it’s a good debut in the sense that it shows a
little bit of everything that we do and should give the audience an idea of what we might do next. What are the highlights Q from your recent gigs? Our most recent gig was the A album launch on Nov 26 which was heaps of fun. The highlight for me was playing the song ‘Precious Ground’ when we had our good friend Liam McGorry from the band Eagle and the Worm play the trumpet with us on stage. It was one of those amazing moments as a performer to play that song and have it sound exactly like it does on the album.
Q
What does the future hold for The Fearless Vampire Killers?
We’ll be touring the album A nationally in early 2012 and then looking at album number two, which will be fun.
Q
Got any vampire killing tips?
Recently, we each had to A list what weapon we would use if we were to actually kill a vampire. I said a whisk; I don’t know how you’d actually do it but I’m going to stick with that.

BOYS TOYS
It was the new 370Z Nissan 6-sp manual Coupe! What a beautiful looking machine, not only on the outside with its beautiful sleek lines, the inside of the cabin was like sitting in a cockpit of a plane. Nice round traditional sports gauges in font and also a cluster of three off to the side on the dash. Lights and buttons everywhere, I loved it!
After sliding into the seat which sits very low to the floor giving that true sports car feel immediately. I got the run down with specs on what’s new on this model from the last. I just wanted to see what it was capable of. It has the looks and I knew it was going to perform. Well let me tell you, when you apply the power a howling 3.7 litre, double overhead cam V6 petrol that’s good for 245kW/363Nm of output was up and running literally. The redline indicator doesn’t even start till 7500rpm! Everything about this car and having many similar features and technology inputs from its older brother, the Nissan GTR, the 370Z is built to be driven and driven hard. 16 • www.coremag.com.au
Standard features of the Nissan 370Z include: heated poweradjustable seats, cruise control, climate control, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, 3D satellite navigation, a Bose stereo system with 9.3GB hard-disk, auto-sensing xenon headlamps and keyless entry and ignition.
enthusiast drive and feel like a pro without having the actual skill or ability to heel and toe. I was actually feeling more pathetic going up through the gears with speed, as my gear changes felt rough and rugged compared to coming down. If this was my car I would never take it off.
But the highlight for me was what Nissan calls Synchro Rev Match. With the touch of a button the engine automatically revs out to the required and exact revs to help change down through the gears perfectly and seamlessly. And I mean perfectly from any gear at any speed! It truly is an incredible feature and this is when I started to feel like a formula one driver. This technology makes any car
The 370Z just performs in all aspects and sticks to the road like you-know-what. With all this power you have to unfortunately stop or at least slow down at some stage. The ABS in the 370Z has to be felt to be believed, having more speed and response than any conventional ABS on your standard cars. It has massive power assisted ventilated disc brakes to keep this rig under total
control when you really need them. It, of course has all the other safety features you would expect on a performance vehicle, like stability and traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, seatbelt pretensioners, front and side curtain airbags are all standard on the 370Z. The features are endless. If you’re looking for a performance car that actually has a price tag that isn’t outrageous and matching performance abilities of those in a much more expensive league, it is truly going to be hard to go past the new Nissan 370Z. I guess I set out to build a road going race car. I’m not so into the flash paint jobs or big sound systems, going fast is more my thing and after owning a Subaru Legacy with a hairdryer strapped to the side of it (turbo) I wasn’t keen on all the hassle that comes with owning a turbo. So I settled on a 1UZ-FE for the engine because of its power and strength. Then I had to choose a car to run this powerful engine. My first thought was an older model Toyota Corolla but I eventually decided on the E30 BMW because it fit all the criteria I was looking for: rear wheel drive, a light car so it would have good power to weight ratio, and the fact that it was a bit older made it a bit easier to work on. The first thing was to completely strip the car. Then I painted the inside of the car gloss black because I wasn’t going to re-lay carpet – it would have only added weight! I did this while the engine was away being pre-wired for the link computer. Once the engine was wired I bolted the custom cast bell housing and the Toyota W57 gearbox to the engine. As I lifted the engine and gearbox in for the first time I held my breath hoping not to have to move the firewall. It was a tight fit, but she went in. Then I made up engine mounts and a 18 • www.coremag.com.au
gearbox mount and then called an engineer/certifier to have a look at my mounts and go over my plan for the car to make sure I was on the right track and also so that I wouldn’t have to redo any of the work should it be not up to standard. From here it was a matter of working my way through the car and sorting out all the other little changes I wanted to make: putting in a custom drive shaft (using a standard diff), cutting out the front of the car and reinforcing it to make room for the double pass aluminium radiator and fabricating a custom fuel tank. I decided to sit the fuel tank in the boot because the old fuel tank was in the way of the new exhaust. I chose not to make a drop tank because having a fuel tank sit between the rear suspension is better for the centre of gravity. I upgraded the brakes using calipers from a Mazda RX7 series 7. I then
used standard RX7 discs, bored the centre out of them and made up custom adaptors so I could use the standard BMW hubs. Once the brakes were made I had the suspension custom built, with a fully gas adjustable system plus camber and caster. While the suspension was being built, I fitted a new brake booster as the original wouldn’t fit with the new engine. The idea was to mount the booster and master cylinder in the standard place where you would expect it to be, but because of the suspension housings being so close to the engine, I had to mount it on an angle which was fine until it came
to building a linkage between the square pedal and the angled booster. New WRX seats were fitted in the front onto the original seat rails, but the back seat became home to my new stereo speakers making the car a two seater only. The hinge bonnet was replaced with pins, and a Mongoose Immobiliser alarm was installed. One of the last big jobs I had to do was build a new exhaust. I made custom 1¼ inch extractors and each pipe was measured to be the same length, 24 inches long. This was a mission because the engine
Issue 4 • 2011 • 19
was such a tight fit and I didn’t have a lot of room to play with. So all four pipes on each side were intertwined to make them fit then HPC coated. 2½ inch twin exhaust which cross over and exit each side of the car just before the rear wheels. Once all the fabrication was complete,
the car was sent to Speedworks to be wired up and dyno tuned, the suspension was set up and after she had her final certification she was all ready to go.
I could finally take her for her first real drive.
1. Know what you want before you start. This will keep you on track and stop you going down a path you don’t want to go.
2. Don’t be too hard on time limits. I gave myself a one-year time frame and ended up spending three times as long. You don’t want to compromise the final product just to finish a little earlier.
3. Expect to go over on your budget. A good example from my car is the
suspension which I budgeted at $2,000. I ended up spending $5,000 because I wanted a fully adjustable race set up. The price made me s**t myself but once I got behind the wheel it was all money well spent.
4. Make friends. I found that getting to know the people
you’re buying parts from helped. Talking about your project gets people interested and then they’re more helpful in finding parts and offering advice.

During the year we have closed season for Barramundi being the 1st November till 1st Feb. This is the time authorities believe is their breeding time, so everyone wants to catch a barramundi when the season reopens. Barramundi can be caught in many different ways with the most popular being: Trolling hard body lures / Live baiting / Soft plastics / Casting at snags Each way requires certain techniques and here are some of ‘what works best for me”. Trolling Troll at low speed along river banks where you can see fallen trees and snags. The secret is using deep diving lures allowing these lures to bounce off fallen logs and trees as this will get the barra to come out of the snags to attack the lures. A lure retriever is required when using this technique should the lure become snagged.
Live Baiting Fishing a snaggy area with deep holes especially on the corners of a rivers always works well for me, with best baits being live large mullet or tarpon. The secret to this is to hook the live bait as light as possible using a 8/0 or 10/0 hook then lowering your live bait into water allowing the tide to run your bait into the hole you are fishing. You should not be able to cast your bait without the hook coming out of your bait. The reason for this technique is that a barra will inhale his prey and when he does the hook needs to come out of the bait and hook the barra.
22 • www.coremag.com.au
Editorial by: Bob Spees Whitsunday Fishing World
Soft Plastics This is a very good technique for barra and works well using a rolling sinker and a weedless hook rig. Casting your plastics over fallen logs and sticks pulling your weedless rig over these snags allowing your plastics to fall down the side using very light twitches. The reason being that the hook needs to stay level with the plastics as the fish takes the plastic then you need to strike quickly as the hook will come out of the plastic and penetrate the barra’s mouth.
Casting at Snags Casting hard body lures at snags works very well for me and my favourite way of fishing for barramundi. I like to start at the bottom of the tide using poppers, small stickbaits and shallow divers as the fish are usually along the bank waiting for the tide to rise. As the tide starts to rise I change to deep divers throwing on the edge of the bank and using short retrieves slowly bouncing the lure over the logs. You can feel the lure hit the snags. As this happens allow your lure to rise to the surface and then again work your lure back down.
CHECKLIST: WHEN TO GO: Lead up to the full moon with neap tides WHAT YOU NEED: • Cast net for live bait • Shallow and deep diving lures (my favourite is the Barra Classic plus 10 foot in the golden streak) • Baitcaster combo • 30lb Braid and 40lb leader • Small ball sinkers • 8/0 - 10/0 suicide hooks BAITS: Live mullet
BARRAMUNDI ON THE TABLE Eating quality barramundi varies greatly and can rate from about a 2 to 9 out of 10. This depends on where the barra is caught. For example if the barra is caught at the mouth of the rivers and has a very silver body, yellow tail and fins, this fish would be the best quality eating. If the fish is dark in colour with a dark coloured tail, he has been living in brackish or fresh water and would generally be very poor eating. I generally only keep a barra if he is between 60 - 70cm as these are young male fish and are best eaten at this size. Fish over 80cm should be released as barra change to female once they reach this size and if we continue to kill this size fish, our breeding stocks will decline. So if you catch a large barra get a photo and release her so she can reproduce. Hence we and our grandkids can enjoy this sport for many years to come.
Justin Clare caught this 9.5kg Spanish Mackerel on a fishing trip with mates at the “Monkey Hole” near Keswick Island.

Owner: Airlie Fitness Personal Trainer: 8 Years Lives: Proserpine Married to Wendy, also a Personal Trainer, with 3 girls under 5! Ready made snacks like almonds and other nuts are easy to carry and snack on while on the job or during small breaks. For both gaining muscle and stripping fat, its so important to eat regular small meals, especially during a physical work day, so you are not breaking down muscle.

Your goals are similar - gaining muscle, losing fat, and getting fitter and stronger. Both of you indicated a desire to run. The 5 on 5 off roster is a big obstacle to consistency, so its crucial that you maintain some kind of exercise program while you are away working, and make the most of your time back with 5 sessions. Record all your exercise and eating, both when here and away, and email to me daily.
5 Off:
2 x shoulders (press, lateral raise)
You must maximise your training when you are back. Aim for 2-3 strength sessions and 2-3 cardio sessions in each 5 day block.
Alternate chest exercises with back for active recovery, finish with shoulders
Bootcamp:
2 x biceps movements, 2 x triceps
1 x session with the whole group will be organised for each period at home. Strength Sessions:
Biceps, Triceps, Legs, Abs (eg pushdown, db kickback)
Leg Press or squats, leg extension or lunges, seated curl or deadlifts, calf raise
1 x Group Power session (full body, high rep metabolic training)
Ab machine, Roman chair knee raises, planks
2 x strength sessions split as follows:
CHOOSE FROM
SPLIT STRENGTH ROUTINE 3 Sets x 8-10 reps Chest, Back, Shoulders: 2 x big chest movements (bench or press, pec fly) 2 x back (lat pull, row or dumbell row)
24 • www.coremag.com.au
Cardio Sessions: • 1 x Group Ride class or 1 x Boxing for Fitness Class • 40 minute Cardio Challenge or Arc Trainer / Treadmill • 5 km run/walk on treadmill
5 On: While away, in spite of the long working days, its crucial you do something each day. Aim for a jog, a gym strength session, a game of 1 on 1 basketball at gym, a swim, or at the very least, a walk.
Strength Training: Here is a bodyweight strength & circuit you can do 2-3 times each trip away if you cant make the gym. 20s - 20 Push Ups, 20 Squats or Lunges, 20 Crunches, 20 Second Chin Up Hold, 20 Second Plank. Aim for 5 rounds with a minimum of rest between each exercise but a few minutes between rounds. Buy a skipping rope - aim for 5 minutes of skipping, then 10, then 15 and 20. When you can skip for 20 minutes continuously, you are getting seriously fit. If you can make the gym, aim for full body strength and some cardio each time.

With similar goals and lifestyle challenges shared by you two, I suggest you take advantage of this and train together as much as possible. EATING & DRINKING What you do away from the exercise can accelerate or destroy your results. We don’t believe in crash diets, so your mission is to follow some simple rules. Record everything you eat and drink in a daily email to me, and each other - so we can all share in the shame or bask in the glory of your choices every day. Eat small nutritional meals, with protein, several times per day. You MUST eat breakfast, mid morning, lunch, mid afternoon, and an evening meal. Supplements can help supply the essential protein you need between meals and are quick and easy to take on the run. Dont Drink Alcohol. Alcohol is the biggest result killer for anyone striving for fat loss. Everything you eat, or have recently eaten, once consuming alcohol, will be stored as fat - all of it! You’ll also be putting your liver, the only thing
Rest or a leisurely walk.
that can break down fat for energy, on grog duty. It cannot do both. If you must drink, limit yourself to a couple of drinks ONE DAY per week. Drinking even a couple of wines every night will slow your success dramatically. Drink more water. Your body needs H2O for everything it does - without enough of it, your metabolism will slow down. The extra exercise will also lift your requirement of water. Aim for 3 litres per day. Eat small when the calorie load is big. An example: Pasta. This is a calorie rich processed carb. So simply eat less, say, a fist sized serve. If you were looking at eating a raw green salad, (also a carb, but with a low calorie load) eat a mountain of it! Carbs are ok to eat, but we need to be smart and alter the serving size according to the calorie load.
White processed carbs (pasta, breads) will deliver more calories with a higher GI than brown, less processed carbs - go for brown if you can. Eat Low HI. HI = Human Interference. The less human interference in the food, the better it is for you, and generally the lower it is in calories. Low HI foods like nuts and seeds contain protein, good fats and oils, and a perfect level of carbs. Eat green and stay lean! Supplements Smart consumption of supplements can greatly increase your recovery and accelerate you results. Complete Whey: Consume immediately after training and periodically during the day when required. Scivation Xtend: This amino blend will help you train harder,
recover faster and keep your metabolism fast, hence burning more fat. Sip while you train, and 1-2 times daily. Oxy Elite Pro: This is our secret weapon - simply the worlds best thermogenic. This amazing formula drives your body to burn more calories, and aim to block your Alpha -2 receptors, which make your body hold fat under the skin, particularly in the abdominal & hip region. Consume every morning. It will help control your appetite and regulate your blood sugar.

Due to our challengers having different work schedules, everyone’s weekly exercise plan is different. They are all committed to 3 gym sessions per week as well as a group session on Thursday nights for one hour. The Thursday night session will be run by a different personal trainer
GOAL: To provide your body with optimal nourishment whilst keeping calories at a minimal. In order to achieve this, you should eat as much food from nature’s table as possible. Plenty of fresh vegetables, salads, fruit and whole seeds & nuts. EAT Regularly throughout the day, 3 mains and 2 smaller meals at mid morning and afternoon. The most important meal being breakfast. Make this meal as nourishing as you can. Protein sources should come from lean meats / fish and eggs. Try to stay away from processed meats. Carbs should be from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid man-made carbs including white pastas, white 26 • www.coremag.com.au
each week and will be a mystery to all contenders. Our Personal Trainer will provide motivation, inspiration and guidance to ensure we get the best results from our challengers. Our challengers will have at least one session every week with their PT where they will be weighed in and measured. bread and most low fat processed breakfast cereals. If you cannot avoid processed carbs, then choose the smaller portion size. Oils & Fats play a part of many metabolic processes. Don’t be afraid of healthy oils found in nuts, seeds, avocados, fish and the like. Oils will leave you with shinier hair & skin, healthier joints and better cognitive function. Natural oils found in food, slow down the digestive time of the meal and therefore will leave you feeling satisfied for longer. Beverages. Water water and more water. Read the label on the bottle, if it has sugar within, leave it alone. Find water boring? Add a dash of fresh lemon to the bottle or place a quarter into the waterjug. Avoid alcohol until the end of the challenge, then celebrate!
During this session the challengers will bring in their weekly food diary and talk about their eating and training habits for the week before. They will also devise that week’s exercise schedule and refocus on their goals. The Challengers will also have to fill in an evaluation on how they felt that day in regards to sleeping,

eating, training, work and personal life stresses. This is so the Personal Trainer can have a better understanding of their life and how they are coping with the challenge. As each contestant is different, they will be prescribed different products to suit their training and eating plans.
Recommendations
Supplements are a useful addition to your daily nutritional intake.
Protein Powders:
Protein drinks can and should be incorporated into the daily plan.
BSC ‘Low Carb Lite’
Protein supplements are great post training or as a snack food. Choose either a low carb high protein bar or shake. Vitamin and Mineral supplements are good insurance, with the additional stress the exercise places on the body, choose a higher dose vitamin C and D supplement. Weight loss supplements can be added to the plan, and are best taken before breakfast and lunch.
‘ProtoWhey’ Snack Protein Bars: Weight Loss Supplement: ‘Oxy Elite Pro’ or a milder option ‘Hydroxyburn’

What does your job Q involve? Firstly, coaching the Queensland A Cup side, the Mackay Cutters, and that program takes a lot of organising, planning, and managing. I’m also in charge of coach education, so during the year I run training courses for Mackay Junior Rugby League coaches. I also have a relationship with Mackay State High School, Mercy College and Sarina High School whereby I also try and assist with their coaches’ education and, where I can, with their rugby league programs as well.
How did you get into Q coaching? I signed for the Brisbane Broncos when I A was 17 and I played lower grade rugby league for the Broncos and went on to play first grade NRL for the Canberra Raiders. I then went to England to play Super League for four seasons. I came back in 2005 to play for the Bronco’s Clydesdales side in the Queensland Cup, and by then I was 31. They asked me to take on a mentoring role with the team as well as captain, so that is pretty much how I got into coaching. I also did a teaching degree back when I first started with the Broncos and knew I always had that in the background if I ever finished football. In 2001 I had to have a knee reconstruction and I missed the whole season, so I came back to Australia and taught for a year. I then went 28 • www.coremag.com.au
on to do a Masters in Education which I think has helped my coaching, management and organisation.
Q
Are there any pitfalls in being a top coach?
I suppose when you’re coaching at A Queensland Cup level, the pitfalls of the job are that you are judged by your results, by your wins and losses. I certainly don’t judge myself like that, I think if I can see that I am helping to improve the playing group both individually and collectively, I see that as a sign of success.
believe in having a look at what other coaches and other sports are doing as well. What tips do you have for Q anyone else wanting to get into coaching?
Do you need to have played Q the sport to coach it?
Coaches who are successful certainly have A a zest for knowledge and want to continue their coach education. Learn from others’ mistakes and observe coaches, (there is always an open invitation to come and watch the Cutters train), and from other sports. Also, making sure you go through the coach education process, the Australian Rugby League one, there is level one, two, three and so on.
I certainly don’t think that you need to A have played the game at the highest level to be a good coach. I think you have to have a passion for the game and be willing to learn. I
There is certainly a pathway for coaches to progress through the ranks. Also, get involved in junior or schoolboy level initially as that gives all new coaches a terrific introduction.

How did you get into Q riding? Mountain biking is a family A affair at home. My dad David is an avid mountain biker and put me on the trails at a young age, first with BMX and then mountain biking. Now we compete in pair events. My mother and my girlfriend Carly White compete in races, too. Last year my mom and Carly won second place in an 8-hour endurance race outside of Townsville.
Q
Who do you ride with?
Apart from my family, I ride A with my mates Craig Lawson and Evan Corry (who owns Corry Cycles), at Rowallan Park near Mount Pleasant.
Q
Where’s your dream track?
While I like Rowallan Park heaps, A I dream of one-day riding the slopes of Whistler-Blackcomb in Canada. I want to ride around the world. My family plans to go to New Zealand this year for a 100km race. Q Tell us about your racing competitions. I compete in local and state-wide A mountain biking events. After winning the U-11 Australian Downhill Championship when I was 9, I continued to compete in endurance races. The biggest I’ve done is a 12-hour race in Townsville. We’ve also done a couple 8-hour races in Rockhampton. What do you carry during Q races?
During the races, we have to carry all A our tools and supplies. I carry a pump, a spare tube and a set of Allan keys. We run tubeless tyres, so half the time you won’t get a flat tyre. I ride a Giant ‘Reign’ mountain bike, which has six inches of Maestro suspension, and wear clip-in shoes, a riding jersey, a mountain biking helmet, gloves and a camel back.
Q
Have you had any bad riding injuries?
When you’re riding, you’re doing A speeds of up to 70 km/hr; when you hit the ground, you crash pretty hard. I recently shattered my collarbone and now I have a plate with nine screws in my shoulder. I was just mucking around with my mates when I went over the handle bars. It was the fourth time I broke my collarbone.
Q
How do you recover from injuries?
I don’t let injuries slow me down. I A went straight to the track for a ride on the day the doctor gave me permission. When I’m not riding the trails, I train by road cycling and working my upper body at the gym.
Q
What do you recommend for someone just getting into riding?
I recommend that you get a good A bike. Once you’re on the track, let someone know you’re out there, or better yet, bring a mate. We’ve had people that have hurt themselves and got stuck out there.

Chocolate Almonds Go nuts for some almonds which are packed with vitamin E to boost blood flow to the sex organs.
Seduce your lady friend with some dairy milk delights and move full steam ahead into pleasure town. Chocolate affects the pleasurecentres of the brain and peaks during orgasm.
Honey Sticky and sweet, trace minerals found in honey help give the female sex hormone, oestrogen a kick in the pants to get the juices running.
Chilli Spice up your love life – in more ways than one. Chilli is full of capsaicin, a chemical that can induce the release of feel-good hormone endorphins. So tuck in to some chilli then tuck yourself in for some hot betweenthe-sheets action.
Avocado Avos are rich in B6 and help to increase sexual stamina and energy. They also hang in pairs on avocado trees and look like testicles…appropriate really.

Bananas The humble banana has long been associated with that embarrassing sex-ed class in school but they also have another use. The good stuff in bananas can assist with sexual stamina.
Figs Figs are much more than a fleshy erotic-looking fruit - they are high in amino acids which act as a powerful sexual stimulant.
Celery Great smothered in peanut butter, celery is a super-food when it comes to getting you in the mood. Containing a male hormone called androsterone, which acts as a pheromone, it arouses females and helps get them in the mood.
Oysters Slippery little suckers with the consistency of boogers to some, oysters are a wellknown libido-booster for men. Rich in zinc, they increase sperm production and dopamine, a mood-enhancer.
Garlic Garlic is nature’s own Viagra. By dilating blood vessels, it increases blood flow to the sex organs. Just make sure you and your partner share the garlic bread!

Break the golden rules of dating on Valentine’s Day, and you can kiss away any chance of success (wink wink). Go the extra mile to impress your Valentine, and don’t let some simple mistakes get in the way of a good time. HERE’S A SAD STORY.... Donna met Tony during a Christmas holiday at the Gold Coast and they spent the night deep in conversation and flirting madly. They exchanged numbers and spent the next month chatting and texting and agreed to meet up in his hometown of Bundaberg for Valentine’s Day. Donna arrived full of excitement. Sadly, all hopes were dashed when Tony arrived to pick her up at the airport barefoot (yes without any shoes!!). Donna said she could have overlooked this except it just got worse. She had hoped he would have booked a nice hotel so they could rekindle their holiday romance, but Tony took her back to his house where she was greeted by his two housemates on the couch watching footy and sinking a few coldies. Fine, except for the clincher... Tony suggested that rather than go out 38 • www.coremag.com.au
to eat, they get a pizza and stay in and watch the footy with the guys. Donna high-tailed it out of there and into the first taxi back to the airport. “I couldn’t believe it”, she said. “We had such different ideas on how this would go. I don’t know what happened to that romantic guy I met at the Gold Coast.” Needless to say Tony got nothin’ and was left perplexed. “I just wanted to make her feel relaxed and show her how much I liked her by welcoming her to my home and meeting the guys!” Now there’s the mistake! Many blokes think that by being themselves straight up they are showing the girl who they are by trying to keep within their comfort level. Most ladies, on the other hand, want the opposite of reality; they want big romance... even if it’s just for one night.
Be confident (and if you don’t feel confident – act it!) – women love confidence in a man, they find this incredibly sexy. Women always look at shoes, be sure yours reflect the right image!
Look at her as much as you can (no ogling though!); women love attention and they like to feel like they are being admired. A great smell can make a lasting impression. I have often heard women talk about a guy’s after-shave so make sure you stock up on the CK1!

The truth is, there are hundreds of styles, cuts, prints and fabrics out there, so how do you know which is the most comfy? We thought it would be fair to get both sex’s opinion. While the girls can give us an idea of how we look, let’s be honest, they can’t provide comfort reviews. TK MAXX LONG JOHNS: Him: These were significantly longer in the leg - actually the most comfortable of the lot. Tons of support withought being too bulky and because of the longer leg, they didnt creep up the thigh. If it wasn’t for the Northern Queensland heat, I’d live in these! Her: Not the most flattering of the lot, something about the longer legs just throws the, erm, proportions out.
SILK BOXERS: Him: I put these in the ‘bed wear’ category. I’d never consider wearing them under clothes - especially jeans. All that material gathered under my jeans made it quite unpleasant. But like I said, great to wear to bed. Her: Boxers look great on most guys. From comics to car makes, sports teams and cartoon characters, there’s a pair for everyone. SIMPSONS BRIEFS: Him: These were pretty comfortable, however the quality didn’t seem to match the bonds briefs. No doubt the dancing Homer will tickle someones pickle, but that’s it - they looked great, but lacked in comfort. Her: Seeing him in a pair of Homer Simpsons briefs made me laugh. They didn’t look too bad, but he didn’t seem to feel comfortable in them. BONDS RED BIKINI BRIEFS: Him: These are the typical ‘jocks’. Have to say, I’m not a fan. They have the tendancy to ride up a bit and are strangely constrictive. Her: Some guys can pull these off, some can’t. If you have the body and the confidence then go for it. Chances are though, if you’re built like a men’s underwear model, we won’t care what you’re wearing. BONDS BRIEFS: Him: Nothing says, “I’m a true blue Aussie bloke” like a pair of bonds briefs. They offer great support, are made from a durable thin stretch cotton and come in bulk colours. With a wider waistband, they are great to wear playing sport. That little bit of extra support does wonders. Her:: Love these! They look great and aren’t too over the top. That Bond’s logo reminds me of Patrick Rafter in his undies... hmmmm. TK MAXX COTTON BOXERS: Him: These are a good contender. Probably the most popular underwear worn by guys out there. Good all round support, wears well under jeans and they don’t have the tendency to ride up where they shouldn’t be. Her: They look great, not too high and seem to fit well.

It’s the age old question – does she mean what she just said? Navigating the wide array of women’s responses to what seem like normal, everyday questions is a mine field and if you’re not careful you may end up in the mother of all fights, single or worse still, castrated. We’ve done our best to give you a just little bit of insight and maybe, just maybe, save your skin.
What she really means: I don’t know but as long as it sparkles and will make my friends jealous, anything will do.

The tricky thing with the doghouse is that sometimes you can’t even tell what it is that put you there. One minute things are rosy, the next you’re copping the silent treatment. So to save some time scratching your head, here’s some things you can do to avoid the doghouse and the cold, sleepless nights it brings.....
Pick up the phone Four simple words that could change your life. Let her know where you are and how long you will be, especially if you’re going to be late for something pre-arranged. Do it before the third beer so you don’t forget.
“I’m sorry” It doesn’t matter what it is, just tell her you’re sorry for it. You don’t want to be in the doghouse for more than a couple of days so make sure you keep the sorrys coming and be on your best behaviour until the storm passes. But hold on tight, it could be a rough ride.
Do your part You may not notice but there are lots of things that happen around the house to keep it running smoothly. Washing, folding, cleaning and grocery shopping – all the things that fellas either don’t notice or ignore. Get on board the housework train and see if you can trick her into thinking you’re more observant and helpful than you really are.
Step up to the plate If you’ve done something wrong and you know it, head her off at the pass and get straight in the kitchen to whip her up some dinner. Follow that by washing up and clearing the kitchen to give her a night off. Impress her a little and you’ll escape the doghouse; impress her a lot and skyrocket to the top of her good books once more.

How did you get started Q with Shique Promotions? I was originally a promo girl. A I’ve worked at V8 races and I’ve been an ambassador for many companies and events, such as the North Queensland Dirt Drags. After doing promos for a number of years, I decided to give my own business a go.
Q
When were you discovered as a model and promo girl?
I ended up in the national A finals for Miss Lingerie Australia. Then I competed in the V8 Supermodel Search Australia and the Zoo Australia Swimwear Search. I’m the month of August for the 2012 Zoo calendar and I ended up with July for the 2012 V8 calendar. Being in two calendars this year was pretty exciting. Congratulations! Is it Q hard work being in front of the camera or on the floor as promo girl? You’ve got to be smart. When A you’re dealing with highprofile clients, you need to be able to make conversation. It’s not just about the look; you’ve got to have brains to work in this industry. What’s been the highlight Q of your career so far? Probably doing the A competitions. Doing the V8 Search last year in Townsville was great. You get to meet a lot of interesting people. I’ve met
amazing photographers and models, including Ellie Gonsalves who hopes to work for Victoria Secret. She’s stunning and smart, which is what I loved about her.
Q
Is modelling for Victoria Secret a dream you have too?
No, for me, I’d rather be a A business woman and focus on my career, becoming the best Promotions Manager I can.
Q
That’s admirable. So, what does a day in the life of Hannah Berck entail?
The first thing I do is check A all my e-mails. I have so many coming in at the moment. The rest of the day involves promoting my company and now promoting the Ambassador Hotel as well. I’ve always got my laptop and phone on me to keep in touch with clients. Every day is different. I work for a variety of industries, which I really enjoy because I’m always learning new things. When we did the QME Expo two years ago, I learned all about tools. When I’ve worked for alcohol companies, I learned the background of many beverages.
Q
Tell me about your business partner Luke Anderson.
He’s very smart. We A met six months ago, and within the first minutes we were talking business. We realised
right away we shared the same work ethic. At the moment, we’re focusing on strengthening our businesses; I help him with L.A. Entertainment and he helps me with Shique. We’re a good team.
Q
What are your plans for Shique Promotions?
I’m expanding at the moment. A We have an event coming up in Melbourne on Australia Day. I’m also going to be doing a fair bit for QME coming up in July. I would like to be national, but for now I want to start small and work my way up. You seem like a very busy Q person. How do you manage the work-life balance? It’s all about the calendar! A I’m lucky to work in the night club industry because even when you’re working, you feel like you’re socialising. I’m constantly meeting people and having fun. For example, I’m currently running Miss Hawaiian Tropic in Airlie Beach and I’ll definitely be staying for the afterparty.
Q
After a long day of work, how do you like to unwind?
I do like a glass of wine! It’s A often hard to unwind because I’m always thinking about business. I just started up again at the gym, which helps me to de-stress. My family also helps me a lot and so do my dogs. I’ve got a Pomeranian and Bulldog-Staffy cross; they’re my babies. When I get home
to them and my partner, Chris Leverington who works as a DJ and builder, we put on music and chill out to unwind.
Q
How does your partner feel about your work?
He’s very supportive. He A doesn’t get jealous in any way; he understands that it’s a job. He’s in the spotlight too with his DJ career. Although you’re super busy, Q do you have any hobbies? I’m learning how to mix at A the moment. I bought my own DJ equipment about a month ago. This morning after my partner went to work, I did a bit of a mix. I’m obviously no good at it, but with a bit of time, who knows. I enjoy it. Other than that, I love to cook and bake. Last night I made a three-course meal for dinner. My signature dish is a Toblerone cheese cake. My partner enjoys it; he reckons cooking and baking are pretty good hobbies! The Toberlone cheese Q cake sounds a great Valentine’s Day dessert. How will you spend Valentine’s Day with your partner? We’ll probably just spend a A relaxing evening at home, watching a movie and enjoying dinner.

Mackay’s newest waterfront restaurant Bridges Cafe and Jazz Bar is the kind of eatery where you can... as Dr. Hook sang in 1977... walk right in, sit right down. Located at Blue Water Quay, Bridges offers a changing menu and live music, not to mention a laid-back, river-site atmosphere. Sitting deck-side in the shade and enjoying a pint of Matilda Bay Fat Yak, you may feel like you’re in Brisbane enjoying a lazy arvo. “It’s casual at Bridges. Come down in a pair of boardies for a drink and a meal,” said Mr Marty Vine, co-owner of Bridges alongside Mr

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bridges offers a straightforward and affordable menu that features local fish, bugs, and steak. “If we’re going to be known for anything, it’ll be our big selection of Coffin Bay and Pacific oysters,” said Marty. “Our chefs prepare them with mango, soy, wasabi, garlic and ginger.”
Bridge’s menu will shift with the weather and seasons. “We offer international flavours with local ingredients,” said Mick. Two chefs who honed their skills aboard the Queen Mary luxury ocean liner will be joining the kitchen crew in the coming weeks. On the horizon is also Bridge’s bar menu, which will be designed for folks who want to

With Josh Geiger as their resident musician, Bridges is set to entertain. “Josh has got a good eye for the mood of the crowd,” said Marty. “He can play anything from the golden oldies to what’s hot at the moment.” While weekly live-music will be a staple for Bridges, they will also be hosting a blues and jazz festival in late June of this year.
The drink selection at Bridges continues to evolve. Apart from the standard XXXX Gold and Pure Blonde, Bridges keeps the craftbrewed pale ale Fat Yak on tap. They also plan to develop their hard bar. “We want to be known as the place to go in Mackay for highquality cocktails,” said Marty. Created with an older crowd in mind, Bridges is an alternative to night clubs in the city heart. Paradise. The word gets used pretty loosely
but if it is fitting for anywhere, it’s Fiji’s remote Yasawa Islands. One of the South Pacific’s most stunning regions, the Yasawas consists of a chain of 20 ancient volcanic islands. The pristine white sandy beaches and dramatic rock formations are surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons, which are home to world-class diving and snorkelling spots.
With over 300 islands set in crystal clear waters with palm fringed white sandy beaches, lagoons, coral reefs and idyllic places to stay. “Bula” - you’ll hear it all the time, it epitomises the warm, friendly outgoing nature of the Fijian people.

Fiji offers a diverse cultural experience with the Fijian and Indo-Fijian people – their food, their outlook and differing lifestyles. From remote island villages to the capital Suva (still with its colonial feel) Fiji will provide an endless string of wondrous experiences.
The southern Yasawas are rugged and magnificent in beauty and are a popular spot for divers, backpackers and those seeking out the true Fijian culture. The northern islands frame the famous Blue Lagoon where, as the name suggests, the water is the most inviting shades of blue you will ever see! CORE magazine talks shop with paramedic and cricketer GARETH TAYLOR
Q
Tell me about a day in the life of a paramedic.
At the QAS, paramedics A work three 12-hour shifts with three days off. We arrive before our shift starts to check equipment, making sure it’s ready to go if the call comes in. At the station, every day at work is different. Some shifts you’re away from the station the whole time, other shifts there’s no calls. You never know what’s going to happen. How do you keep your Q cool when responding to emergencies? I just stick to my training. A When you go to a case, everything is automatic. I’ve been to a few horrible things, like car accidents and suicides, but I expected that when I got into the job. QAS offers us counselling to sort out the tough stuff. 58 • www.coremag.com.au
What’s it like to drive the Q ambulance? In our crew, we take turns A driving the ambulance. QAS provides coverage to the people along the coast line of Whitsunday Shire to the south of Miriam Vale and west to the South Australian border, so we get to do a lot of driving. We’re only allowed to drive 30 km above the speed limit. I’ve been on the road for a year, but it’s still exciting to put the lights and sirens on when we get a Code 1. What’s the ambulance crew Q like? I work with a diverse crew. A For example, one paramedic is a former electrician, another is a body builder. Half the guys have been in the job for over 20 years and then you’ve got people like me who are new to the service.
Interested in becoming a paramedic? They look at your life skills and minimum education. There’s a paramedic course at university through CQU where you can enter through high school. Many people do health related courses first, like nursing or human movement.
When you’re not on the Q wheel, what do you do in your down time? I’m an avid cricketer. Almost A every Saturday, I play with the Northern Suburbs club. Last year I went on a tour of England with the club, playing 10 games against good-quality, local sides around Battle, a countryside town an hour South East of London. One of the highlights was playing at Arundel Castle, a cricket ground among the oldest in the world. When you’re playing, you have a 360 degree view of the English countryside. Until 10 years ago, it’s where the Australian team would play their first game of the season against England. The club is planning another tour for 2012, and we hope to host British teams in Mackay.
Q
Did you grow up in Mackay?
I’m originally from NSW but A moved to Mackay with my parents as a child. After graduating from Pioneer State School, I worked at mines in the Bowen Basin for a year. It wasn’t for me. After you decided mining Q wasn’t for you, what career path did you pursue? A
Since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a paramedic.
After a year in an entry-level nursing job, I entered a two-year nursing program at TAFE. Out of 20 students, I was the only guy. My mates teased me endlessly, but we would sort it out on the cricket field. How did you make the Q transition from nursing to paramedical science? I spent time working at A Homefield Age Care as well as Mater Hospital. I really enjoyed my nursing and I had forgotten about being a paramedic. When I was thinking about furthering my studies, I ran into a paramedic on the road. He said that because I was a local and had a health background, I’d be a great candidate. Our chat was perfect timing. Tell me about the Q paramedic selection process: After an intense selection A process including physical and psychometric testing as well as leadership and problem solving skills assessment, I was accepted into the QAS in January 2011. I then spent six weeks doing basic training in Brisbane (which is just like what you can see on the TV series Recruits Paramedics).
Q
Now I’m on the road, working A with a qualified paramedic who acts as my mentor and continuing my education. One of the hardest things is trying to keep up with my studies during work; we have exams every six months. After two and a half years of mentorship and studies, I’ll have a full week of exams to pass in order to be a qualified paramedic. What are your future career Q goals? After completing A my QAS exams, I plan to apply to the intensive care paramedic program, which I hope will lead me to working on the CQ rescue chopper. Q
What makes your job worth it?
It a bit of a cliché, A but the best part of my job is seeing the gratitude on people’s faces when you’re able to help them. When patients and their families say ‘Thank you,’ it makes it all worthwhile.
What’s the most challenging part about your job?

s A new activity recommendation engine. Schemer, the latest project from the Google team, is a website where users discover, share and schedule ‘schemes,’ their word for ‘task’ or ‘goal.’ Networking: Getting started: With Schemer it’s as simple as typing in things you’d like to do. Type in a scheme, such as “learn to grill a steak to perfection” or “hike Mount Kilimanjaro with my best mate”, and they’re automatically saved in a personalised list. Once you’ve completed the scheme, you can mark it ‘done’ and revel in your accomplishment.
Partnering with popular American organisations such as Lifehacker, National Geographic, Bravo, Entertainment Weekly and the Food Network, Schemer offers scheme suggestions for those looking to try something new. You can also browse through other people’s schemes, adding them to your list or checking off the ‘done’ box.

How Schemer could work for you: Type in “Do a beer golf night at Airlie” for your first scheme. Now that you’ve added it to your list of schemes, send online invites to your mates to join you. Because Schemer is integrated with Google Plus, sending invitations is quick and easy. The next morning, log in to Schemer, check off your scheme and share your tips, like where you scored free tequila shots.
Popularity: With 729 people who want to do it, one of the most popular schemes so far is “learn how to make beer at home.” Through comment boxes, heaps of people have shared links on home brewing. Connecting like-minded people with helpful resources, Schemer is posed to be a hot D.I.Y site. One day, it may rival Instructables.com.
It appears that Schemer is not only a resource for tracking and discovery. With Google location services, people doing the same schemes in the same area can connect offline. Just imagine jamming with a guitarist from across town, or swapping surfing tips with a mate down the road. Maybe you’ll even find a lady friend through your love of rock climbing or muscle cars. Currently in beta testing, Schemer could benefit from a larger user base, especially in Australia. A Schemer app has been developed for Android, and an iPhone app is forthcoming.

Oiling the deck seals it against the damaging effects of ultra-violet sunlight – which can dry out a deck and cause boards to shrink, crack and splinter. Start by brushing the whole deck with a stiff broom. This will help get rid of loose dirt and help you see where caked-on mud and moss might be. Use detergent in warm soapy water, or a mixture of deck cleaning solution and water. Scrub with a stiff broom or a large scrubbing brush. Ensure you get rid of all dust, dirt, mould, moss and wax.
Pour the oil into the roller tray. Using a cloth oil pad, roller or a large brush, apply the oil to all areas of the deck. Then allow it to dry. Depending on how much sunlight and rain the deck gets, you should add another 1 or 2 coats. Undercover decks can go 2 years without resealing.
Staining your deck can give it a lustrous consistent look. A stain will add colour to your deck whilst highlighting the natural timber grain.
Try sanding them off or carefully applying a stronger mixture of deck cleaning solution can also get rid of stubborn stains. Use a hose on bird droppings as soon as you see them. This stops them staining the boards!
The stain is applied the same way as the oil. Work from one side of the deck to the other – covering one board completely before moving to the next board. This gives you a smooth finish without the risk of blotchy spots caused by painting wet stain over dry stained areas.
TIPS
Once the deck is clean, check to see if there are any loose boards, or if there are any nails that need to be hammered in. Look for moisture damage. This may mean the board needs replacing. But often the damage can be removed by vigorously sanding it with sandpaper. If most of the deck is rough and weathered, consider hiring an industrial sander.
• Remember to always sand, polish, oil and stain with the grain (direction of wood grains).
Make sure you do your sanding after the cleaning - this means you won’t push dirt into the boards as you sand.
• A weekly sweep will help stop water and dust drying out your boards.
Once any stains or loose boards have been dealt with, give the deck a good hosing and allow it to dry.
• Ensure you stick on felt to the bottom of your furniture to avoid scratching!

• When staining your deck, look for a stain with UV protection and weather resistance; this may help prevent greying of the wood.
What to look for??
Ready to move in
The going rate for the popular general purpose home to suit the wider home buyers market in the region at the moment, is low to mid $400K’s.
Popular suburbs include, the Northern Beaches, Glenella, Mt Pleasant and wider North Mackay area.
Where to find it? Most suburbs in the region (and market) have these homes: • 4 bedroom open plan living • 2 bathrooms • Relatively new, modern (often brick) homes with little or no repair maintenance required.
Mind you, if you’re looking to renovate something; perhaps even downgrade to something else, there’s much value to be found in the more traditional Inner City Suburbs such as South Mackay and West Mackay.
Advice for young First Home Buyers: Buy a house you like (even if it’s a little above your plans) and rent one or more of the rooms to assist in Mortgage repayments... BENEFIT: Get what you want and pay it off sooner!! Don’t be in a rush to have it all immediately! Take your time and be wise with your money when it comes to those little additions; decor etc. Decide what best suits your situation and personal finances. Keep in mind, with any of these homes, all the add-ons: Pool / The Man Shed / Lush Gardens, they can all be added after purchase AND at your discretion, not the former owners’.

Love is a battlefield, especially in the bedroom. If you’re not careful, you could contract an STI. In case you were asleep during health class, STI stands for Sexually Transmitted Infection. The scary part is that you can have an STI, such as the bacterial infection Chlamydia, without showing symptoms, meaning you could accidentally pass it on to your sexual partner. Good thing staying safe is as easy as 1-2-3. 1. Talk with your partner. As awkward as it may feel, ask your partner if they’ve been checked for STIs recently. If you have multiple sexual partners, you should get checked for STIs every 6 months. 2. Put on a condom. Condoms are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy and blocking the transmission of infections and viruses. Make sure the condom covers everything. Some STIs, like HPV that causes genital warts, can be passed from one partner to another by skin to skin contact. Heat, friction and time are enemies of condoms. To make sure your condom is up to par, check the expiration date before usage and avoid storing your condoms in wallets, glove boxes or back pockets. Get free condoms at Mackay Sexual Health and Sexual Assault Service, located at 12-14 Nelson Street in Mackay. 3. Slather on the lube. Condoms are only effective if you use them properly, which means making sure they’re not too tight, too lose, or worst, too dry. Using lubricant helps to prevent any tears in the condom, which keeps you and your partner safer.

Many compounds can produce a decrease in visceral fat, but when it comes to improving how you look, subcutaneous fat is what you’re concerned with. This is the fat that’s just below your skin and smothers up your muscles. How much subcutaneous fat you have means the difference between looking ripped or looking like you own stock in a doughnut shop.
LUCKILY this is where OxyELITE Powder™ shines… By utilising a compound shown to block off and deactivate the Alpha-2 receptor, we can use this to our advantage.
Subcutaneous fat is what covers up your abs. Most high-stim “fat burners” these days target visceral fat, not subcutaneous fat.
Think of OxyELITE Powder™ as S.W.A.T – Busting down doors and freeing your fat cells from their hostage situation!
Targeting visceral fat alone isn’t going to do much for your abs – you need to get rid of subcutaneous fat to make a lean physique a reality. Why is the first place to lose fat, the first place to gain fat, you ask? It just doesn’t seem fair, but unfortunately its true – fat sticks to those problem areas like superglue! So why does this happen? Your bodyfat is being held hostage! It’s called the Alpha-2 receptor – and if fat loss is your goal, it’s your absolute worst enemy! If the Alpha-2 receptor wants you to store fat, you’re going to store fat – and lots of it - in the worst possible places.
FREE YOUR FAT TODAY!
DID YOU KNOW There are two kinds of fat in your body? Visceral Fat – Fat that covers your organs. Its primary function is organ protection Subcutaneous Fat – Fat that covers your muscles. Excess subcutaneous fat makes you look soft, smooth & bloated.

City Deals
Check out the fantastic City Deals! Food, fashion, and fun! They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, but working out of town or on shift, can play havoc with your love life. The money’s great, you love your job, but working out of town presents some challenges for local couples and families. CORE asked a few couples for their tips on keeping the romance alive when one of you works away.
TOP TIPS:
1.
Communication: When you’re in a new relationship it’s hard to get to know each other when one of you is away. Similarly for married couples and families, who also need time to talk, sort out issues and manage the household. Our couples all say communication is essential to a strong relationship. Most talked to their spouse once a day and used social media, or Skype to chat face-toface. “Set rules about how often and when you’re going to talk so there are no misconceptions,” says one wise bloke we spoke to.
2.
Get the money sorted: “There’s nothing worse than watching the wife’s credit card balance skyrocket when I’m out of town,” says one local miner. But she says that’s just how it goes. “Life still goes on where he’s not here. I still have to buy groceries, school supplies and clothes.” Fights about money, who’s spending what and how much, are common problems for most couples but can be exasperated when one’s out of town. Making a budget and setting some basic spending rules can save conflict. Some of our couples say they turned to Financial Planners for advice.

Routine: A common complaint was that things are sorted until dad comes home from shift and things are thrown into chaos. “The kids know what’s happening and then dad comes home and the rules are out the window,” says one mum of three. “We had to sit down as a family and work out how he would transition back into our lives on his days off, we wrote it down and it made is so much better for all of us. We made a schedule that wasn’t too confusing for the kids and included time for us to be alone and catch up on the romance.”
4.
Compromise: “I come home from work exhausted and she wants to go out and party,” says one bloke who’s in a brand new relationship. “I just want to relax on the couch and watch DVDs. So we came up with a way to do both, now she only plans things for the last few days of my time off, not the first few days.”
There’s nothing embarrassing about what’s going on ‘down there’. You’ll find many of your mates are going through the same thing and that’s why it’s so important to talk about your prostate and any wee issues you may have. With all the talk about Prostate Cancer, many men are scratching their heads wondering what this little walnut-sized gland is, and how it got to be such a nuisance.
prostate is muscle which contracts during an orgasm to expel the semen into the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder through the penis).
Naturopath Andrea Cantwell, says it’s essential men of all ages become familiar with their prostate so they know if there is something wrong.
What signs should I look out for?
Early detection and troubleshooting will reduce your risk of developing cancer or other issues such as inflammation or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (AKA: enlarged prostate or BPH). While Prostate Cancer is a very serious matter, not all prostate complications are life threatening and some may be alleviated with some minor dietary changes. In fact 50% of men will develop an enlarged prostate by the time they are 50 years old, and that number rises to 90% of men aged 70 and above. So, what is the prostate and what does it do? The prostate is a gland found only in males and is made up of about two thirds glandular tissue which produces fluid for semen. Half of the
Signs of an enlarged prostate include difficulty starting to urinate, difficultly maintaining urinary flow or starting and stopping when trying to pass urine. Other signs include needing to urinate urgently or more frequently, a weaker flow and the increase in the occurrence of urinary tract infections which may cause irritation or burning when passing urine.
to check your Zinc levels at AFS Pharmacies in Mackay. Some herbs may also be beneficial to reducing the symptoms of BPH. “The herb Saw Palmetto has been shown to improve bladder emptying and urinary tract symptoms, such as night time urination and poor urine flow,” she said. Don’t leave it too long – see a doctor if you have any concerns about your prostate health and see your naturopath for ways of managing and maintaining good health ‘down there’.
Is there anything I can do to look after my prostate? Andrea says including more foods with high amounts of Zinc is great for prostate health. “Try including Zinc rich foods in your diet such as oysters, milk, baked beans, egg yolks, herring, beef and lamb, cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds (you can snack on these or throw them in a salad).” She says there is a simple test that can be done

CHESS BOXING Berlin When you think of chess players, you probably think of tangle-haired geniuses, reclusive Russians, and the boys at school who were too delicate to play in the yard. You probably don’t think of bulging biceps, iron jaws and sweat flying. That’s why the mere mention of chess boxing causes so many raised eyebrows. It’s a mixture of chess and boxing - one round of chess is followed by a round of boxing and so on until the winner is declared by knockout, checkmate or points victory.
