THE PLAN

Combining original, rhythmic, pumping rock ‘n’ roll with a no-holds-barred, entertaining high energy performance, JAK draws influences from the great rock artists of the 1970‘s like Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and the modern vibe by the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots and early Guns ‘n‘ Roses.

The Foo Fighters have announced an Australian Tour for the end of 2011! This will be their second visit to our country this year after the band came out earlier in the year to promote their new album Wasting Light.

8 • www.coremag.com.au

Tenacious D, A.K.A. Jack Black and Kyle Gass, who last blew fans away with their 2007 tour of Australia and New Zealand, will be joining the Foo Fighters.

Tom Piper, a Sydney side hotshot, is at the forefront of the Australian dance scene and will perform as the headline act for the WhitsunDAZE 2012 event.

There are some really cool new bass things on route. Stay tuned on my facebook.com/djtompiper or @tompiperfresh on twitter. I will be pushing some mad garage vibes. I had a big dose when I was away and its mad in my head.

What will be in store for Q the public audience at the WhitsunDAZE festival; for those who have never seen you perform live before?

What has been your favourite Q musical project that you’ve worked on?

Well as per normal “Piper” A action, I’ll be bringing a mixed bag of freshness. I have just got back from overseas so I have some sick stuff to play from over there and then some of the huge things we have been smashing here. I have also done some cool new remixes and booties to max out too!

I enjoy doing all of the things A I do or I wouldn’t do them. It is always fun working with friends so anything I’ve done with Tommy or Micky, or Farley or any of my mates has been a good time and we always come up with something super fresh because of that.

You are continually pushing Q the boundaries of dance music? What is the next big thing you have your eyes cast on?

You are a man of many Q talents but what is currently your favourite role to play: DJ, producer, radio host, record label ?

I do have a lot of things on the go that vary widely musically.

Producing is my favourite A thing, because you get to make cool new music..... but

10 • www.coremag.com.au

they are all pretty alright to do! Record label stuff is probably the least interesting.. there is a lot of paperwork if you do it properly. As a child growing up, music Q surrounded you. What type of music did you listen to? And how does that differ to what you listen to now? My first CD was NKOTB. I A think it differs quite a lot now, in many great ways.... but you know, I was just a young ten year old listening to pop. When I got older I got into hip hop and punk stuff; then into rave music which brought me to here.. pretty much the music that I produce / listen to and all that is a mix of rave / punk and hip hop stuff anyway.. So I guess it’s not that different.

How did you guys get started? Around August 2009 A Brenden (Moon) and I started jamming and he had a few new rifts that we tried. Then Kye (Willemsen) started with us on vocals and we got Brendan Edwards involved on guitar and that was it. How would you Q describe your sound? A Metal Core – fast technical and melodic. We weren’t trying to be anything really, but with the rifts Brenden had made and how the drums fitted in, we were really happy with the style.

Q

Who is your musical inspiration? A August Burns Red and Misery Signals which are both metal bands from the USA. What do you love most Q about performing your music? We’re all extremely A passionate about our music and everything we play means so much to us. AND it’s great fun. Do you write your own Q music and what about covers? A Yes it’s all original stuff. We’ve covered Comeback Kid’s ‘Wake the Dead’, which is really popular among metal core fans.

Step 1: Assemble your man clan. Step 2: Proceed to bar and/or nightclub. Step 3: Find the hottest girl in the room and lock her in for a midnight pash. It’s better to do this early in the evening before things get too messy and you can’t speak properly to be able to ask her later. Step 4: Commence drinking alcohol (responsibly of course). Step 5: Continue drinking alcohol until you hear yourself saying ‘I love you man’ to everyone you see. Step 6: Pour yourself into a taxi and head home.

Pop a paracetamol and drink two glasses of water before you hit the hay to fend off the worst of the hangover you’re sure to have in the morning.

Here’s how you do it: - Start saving your pennies early so you have plenty to spoil her with. - Book a table at the fanciest restaurant you can afford. - Wine and dine your missus and make sure there’s plenty of champagne. - Take her dancing until midnight then lock lips with a sexy kiss. - Head back to your house and spend the first few hours of the first day of the new year doing the no pants dance!

To do it right you need to: - Invite some friends around for a backyard party.

If you really want to impress, buy her a gift and give it to her at dinner. You’re sure to score bonus brownie points to put you way ahead early in the year.

There’s bound to be fireworks going off somewhere near your house so make sure the family pet is tied up so they don’t get startled at midnight.

- Make sure your tunes are in order to keep the party going all night long (or at least for a few hours after the kids are all asleep). - Stock up on softdrink, sparklers and party poppers for the kids, and beer, ice and champagne for you and your friends. - Crank up the barbie and make sure you’ve got plenty of snags, steak and seafood to cook up (if you cook we’re sure your missus won’t mind being on salad duty). - Once everyone is fed and has a drink in hand it’s time to sit down, relax and settle in with a beer.

How and why did Adrenalin Cheer and Dance get started? A Kelly: I used to have a modelling agency with a cheerleading team to help promote the models and we used to perform at all major sporting events. At some stage we decided we didn’t want to be just an NRL type cheerleading team but that we wanted to improve our skills and have some more “wow factor”.

Q

lesson to a total number of 150 students we now train every week. Q Who makes up the Adrenalin Cheer and Dance team? A Kelly: We have twenty-two different competition teams ranging from the ages of five to thirty years old. We specialise in competition cheerleading and hip-hop. We compete all over Queensland; we compete nationally and internationally.

Q Are there any experiences you feel other people setting up a business could learn from? Kelly: Word of mouth. You A can start from nothing; we started with nothing but a business name, a qualification and a CD player and a lot of motivation. Through perseverance and doing a good job and providing a good service we have succeeded. Adrenalin Cheer and Dance has gone from eight kids in our first

Rebecca, how did you get involved with Adrenalin Cheer and Dance? A Rebecca: I was working with a cheerleader from Adrenaline Cheer and Dance and I was intrigued. I didn’t think “Bring it On” style cheering happened in Australia. I wasn’t sold on the idea but when I heard Adrenalin Cheer and Dance also boasted a national championship winning hip hop team I was suddenly very interested.

Q

What do you think are the greatest accomplishments Adrenalin Cheer and Dance has achieved? A Kelly: We competed last year in Hawaii, representing Australia, at the Aloha Spirit Championships and we won both of our team events. It was our first international championship and to walk away with two first place awards was a pivotal moment for our club. Rebecca: Both of the stunt teams I am involved with have been undefeated all year and taking out two national titles was amazing for sure. I cried.

Q

You are heading to Las Vegas with a hip hop routine... what is the competition and what is in store for the trip? A Kelly: It’s called the American Grand Championships; held in Las Vegas between the 16th and 18th of December. It’s an international championship, entry to the event

Q

is invite only, and you qualify by winning national championships or being selected by your national body to represent your country. A lot of teams attend the event in the hope to win a bid to the world championships; the competition at the international championship is against other top international teams and the winning teams are selected to represent their country at the world championships. When we competed in Brisbane in September we won our bid; we have already been selected to represent Australia at the world championships in Florida next year. That was lucky for us because we haven’t even competed internationally yet. Rebecca: Besides the actual competition Kelly has spent months organising tours, shows, day trips, and theme parks, so it’s going to be the most amazing experience and I couldn’t think of a more fun group of people to be holidaying with. What do you think will be the biggest challenge at the competition?

Q

Kelly: Feeling like you have support in an American dominated sport. We are only travelling with 17 people from Australia and 13 of them are on the squad; so there will be 13 on the floor and about 4 people in the crowd to cheer. We are excited though and we are going to give it our all and see what happens, but it is always nicer to compete in Australia when you know that you have people rooting for you.

A

Rebecca, what is your next big goal? A Rebecca: The Las Vegas championship will be my last dance competition; and my next athletic goal is back-flipping to dirt on the front of a dirt bike. The Precise FMX team have been flipping their bikes into the foam pit, so my boyfriend Ash, has added an extra set of foot pegs on the front of his bike so that we can back flip together.

No more key scratches on the doors or the dash, as the Murano can be started with the push button. It has all the mod cons at easy access on the steering wheel and a well designed instrument panel. The interior leather seats were a very nice surprise as a standard luxury on the ST model. The driver’s and passenger’s seats are also fully electronic. All Muranos are powered by Nissan’s VQ engine. Its 3.5-liter V-6 puts out 191Kw of power through its Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). The gear changes were seamless when you put your foot down and it was whisper quiet inside the cabin when in traffic or on the highway. The Murano’s handling was very responsive and the comfort was very impressive. Taking it not only on the highway, we travelled on many of Mackay’s rough roads, including Malcomson Street. The Murano was a pleasure to ride in. Fitted with a BOSE audio system, which can be navigated via the Murano’s central display screen,

22 • www.coremag.com.au

the system can be adjusted to suit your music and or mood at any volume level with complete crispness. My only negative with the car that is a compromise with the stylish styling of the Murano, is its swept-back. This styling unfortunately cuts down on usable interior space. Its luggage area is significantly reduced by the sloping rear end, especially when compared to the more square style X-trail. I guess you can’t have it all. All in all though, a very nice car that is well worth checking out at North Jacklin Nissan.

*4.9 be d Niss

The name apparently comes from an island in Europe where the island made the best glass back in the old days (early middle ages). So one might think this relates to it style and sophistication. Well one would probably be correct. The Murano is a great car to drive if you like to use your car as a lounge chair that takes you from A to B. It is not a driver’s car, its not fun to drive no matter how hard you try. Although the steering is very

responsive and direct, the anchors and the 17 inch wheels work very effectively. Take off in auto and in sync control is very, very smooth to the point you can hardly feel the change of gears. Road noise! What road noise? The VC 3.5 idles you along the highway at 100 clicks while sitting at about 1500 rpm however the pickup is a bit sluggish.

no GPS. Has 4WD capabilities and traction control. In the cab there is enough room to swing two cats but the sacrifice is in the boot. On the last lap nice lounge chair with great style inside and out.

The Murano ST SUV comes standard with leather seats and reversing camera, blue tooth, but

Mac tuna, bonito, kawa kawa are several names given to our most popular tuna. The Mac tuna frequent our waters generally from Spring to Summer feeding on small bait fish in large schools from close to shore and out to the continental shelf. These fish grow to approximately 10kg but the average size is around 3-4kg. Long tail or Northern Bluefin is our other most common tuna, which can also be found feeding along side Mac tuna but are generally larger in size. Records show they

grow up to 35kg but the average size locally would be around 6-8kg. Yellowfin tuna and juvenile Big Eye tuna are 2 species that are also caught in our waters from time to time. These tuna are generally found in cleaner waters closer to the continental shelf but are occasionally caught around the reef and outer islands. In our waters the average size for Yellowfin or big eye would be 10kg with 20kg being a notable capture.

Generally speaking, tuna can be found almost anywhere but more often than not are found where you see birds circling or dive-bombing the water. These locations will often occur along current or tide lines, which are known as fish feeding highways! Tuna round up baitfish and force them to the surface before gorging themselves in a foaming frenzy. The birds watch from above waiting for the baitfish to surface before also getting a feed. These birds are the fisherman’s eyes and your best telltale sign when searching for tuna.

K&N air filters are designed to provide minimum restriction allowing high airflow which leads to increased engine horsepower and torque. The replacement air filters are designed to provide up to 4% increase in horsepower and torque. Nothing else can give you that much of an increase for such a small investment. K&N air filters are washable and reusable. In street conditions replacement air filters should require cleaning every 80,000 kms. When servicing a K&N filter with a K&N recharge kit, take care not to over-oil the element as this can lead to reduced performance.

Consider looking into the range of moulded car carpets and PVC products that are readily available to suit most cars and 4WD models. No Bull Accessories is an expert in the field of quality moulded car carpets and dashmats.

Firstly congratulations on Q your second world title! Winning it with your 5th consecutive Australian GP win and on your 26th birthday, we’re guessing the party must have been a good one – how did you celebrate? Thank you! We had a really A nice intimate party with the team on Phillip Island, it was nice to see everyone so relieved and relaxed and enjoying the moment. All mine and Adriana’s (his wife) family and friends were there and it was great to all be together. When we got home, I couldn’t sleep, my mind was still racing thinking about everything, it felt great just to know we had done it. You live in Switzerland at Q the moment. How long have you been living there and what do you get up to when you’re not racing? I’ve been living here for three A or four years now and Adriana and I love it. The people,

the country, Switzerland is a great place and we try to make the most of it. In the summer we love mountain bike riding as there are some great trails near us, also I love to go fishing in the creek at the end of our garden. Then in the winter, the landscape transforms to a perfect skiing paradise! We spend a lot of time up the mountains and we love being outdoors. Being an international Q motorbike riding superstar has taken you to a lot of places throughout the world. What is your favourite destination? I really love North America A in general but especially Carmel Valley and the countryside around North Florida, Georgia and Alabama. It’s such an easy place to travel around and it’s a country that offers so much, it’s always a pleasure to go there. I also love coming home, spending time on the farm and cut off from the outside World. Your gorgeous wife Q Adriana is pregnant with your first child, due in February. First – congratulations! And second – do you know what you’re having? Thank you very much! We’re A so excited, it’s something we had been planning for a while and when we found out, we didn’t’ really believe it at first. Then when

we saw the first scans, it hit home that it really is ‘real’. Yes, we do know what we’re having, but we’re keeping that to ourselves I’m afraid, only close family and friends know. You have about five months Q off before your first race of the 2012 season. Apart from welcoming your first child into the world, what will you be getting up to over that time? We’re going to be setting A up the house to prepare for the baby’s arrival, decorating and getting ready. Then we’ll hopefully get back to Australia for a break and to see family whilst Adriana can still fly safely. It will be nice just to have some time off, get back into my training regime and make sure I’m as prepared as possible for the 2012 season. What is your greatest Q achievement in life, outside of racing? I’m not sure about A achievement, but it’s what I’ve learnt through the places I’ve been fortunate to visit and the people I’ve been lucky enough to meet. Sometimes the travelling can get exhausting, so it’s important to always take something from each place you visit.

Q

What’s your favourite way to unwind?

A For me, spending time with Adriana and fishing. When I’m fishing, nothing else enters my thoughts apart from where I am at that moment in time. I can relax completely.

Q

Have you ever spent time in Mackay/Whitsundays?

Unfortunately not but I’d A love to get there someday! I’ve travelled a lot around the east coast area and I love my fishing there. Australia is one of the most beautiful countries in the World, I’m just sorry I can’t visit more often!

WHERE TO GO Eungella National Park is a popular spot and located only 80km west of Mackay which makes it a perfect weekend away or a quick and easy day trip. Camping is available however a permit is required (visit www.epa.qld.gov.au to register). While you’re there you can enjoy the stunning rainforest and hopefully spot a Platypus. Kinchant Dam is only 40km west of Mackay and has a boat ramp, BBQs, picnic tables and a licensed bistro. Pet are also allowed if arranged beforehand. If you are thinking of heading to Airlie Beach with the kids then an excellent choice for accommodation is Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort. It has a resort style pool with two waterslides, a spa, playground, mini golf and plenty of other activities to keep the kids entertained while you relax. $95 per night for a standard ensuite cabin up to $250 per night for a luxury pool view condo. 48 • www.coremag.com.au

We all know that the downside of any holiday is the long car ride. Now whoever coined the phrase ‘it’s not the destination it’s the journey’ obviously hasn’t travelled long distances with children. If you are road tripping over the Christmas break here are a few tips for your health, wellbeing and sanity. Make sure your car is in good working order. Keep hydrated. Have plenty of water with you - even though you are just sitting in the car it is very important to keep your fluids up. Pack some snacks to avoid spending a fortune on food at the servo, because we all know children need food at roughly 30 minute intervals.

Keep the kids entertained any way you can (books, games, DVDs or even just listening to some music). If you’re covering a particularly long distance then stop as often as possible, just getting out of the car and walking around for a minute can be really refreshing.

Roller Derby is great exercise and a great way to let off steam. The MCRM’s currently have 20 skaters, four male referees and some non-skating officials and are looking for more recruits. No experience is necessary and all you need is a mouthguard and an attitude and the rest can be provided for you. Games, or ‘bouts’ are played by two teams of five members simultaneously skating counterclockwise on a circuit track. Each team designates a scoring player (the “jammer”). The other four members are “blockers”. One blocker is designated as a “pivot”—a blocker allowed to become a jammer in the course of play. The jammer wears a helmet cover bearing two stars; the pivot wears a striped cover; the remaining members’ helmets are uncovered. The bout is played in two periods of 30 minutes. Points are scored during “jams” which last up to two minutes.

During a jam, points are scored when a jammer in scoring position laps members of an opposing team. Each team’s blockers use body contact, changing positions, and other tactics to assist its jammer to score while hindering the opposing team’s jammer.

Come along for a skate and give it a crack. Training is held three times a week. Contact 0402 939 208 for more information on where and when.

Certain types of blocks and other play are violations; referees call penalties and require violators to spend time in a penalty box.

What you need:

A take no prisoners attitude! A penchant for wearing fishnet stockings Great balance Good falling skills.

The most organised spenders regularly debit money directly into a savings account throughout the year to take the strain off end-ofyear expenditures. However, if you are not prepared, set up one now so you’ll be in good form for next year and calculate your disposable income between now and Christmas and determine the percentage of this that can be dedicated each week to help cover the expected Christmas costs. Having a Christmas budget in place will also help you manage the process

better, make a note of planned events, activities, decorations and presents and the estimated associated costs; include hidden expenses such as postage and national or overseas telephone costs.

If you are susceptible to overspending, leave the credit cards at home. If you plan to shop with a credit card, set a limit on the amount that you will spend and determine how you plan to repay the amount spent over Christmas.

In each category of expenses decide on a spending limit, calculate the costs and if it seems excessive adjust spending goals downwards. Don’t forget your regular expenses and include them in your budget also. Limit credit card use and pay cash for your purchases where possible.

After Christmas ensure that you reduce your additional expenses to assist with paying off any credit card debt. Address the high interest rate credit cards first and ensure that you pay more than the monthly minimum fee.

French-made helicopters spin their rotor the other way, which can be very confusing for a pilot who’s never flown one before. The largest helicopter is a Mi-12, also known as V-2 or Homer, is a Russian made helicopter with only 2 prototypes ever built. Their wingspans are almost the size of Boeing 747. It established a world record by lifting 44,205Kg (or 88,636 pounds) to a height of 2,255 m (7,398 ft). They are available on display in Russian museums.

With all of the infrastructure and expansion that’s happening with regard to the Hay Point expansion and other mining interests in the Bowen Basin, there’s a huge influx of people coming to town and that won’t be stopping any time soon. These people earn good income, they need housing and they need it now! Sale prices are still similar to recent years. However rental returns have increased immensely, most by at least 10% over the past three months so there’s never been a better time for investment at today’s prices with tomorrow’s rental return.

What’s something random that not many people would know about you? A In London I got to do a bodyguard stint for actor Liam Neeson and his wife for a party. He was nice, really professional and down to earth.

Q

Where do you work and what do you do? A I’m the director of Evolve Protection Services, a security company. I’m also licensee for Southern Cross Protection Services, and I have just started another business called Job Ready Management where we do all the security training for new recruits and upgrades for those already in the industry. Q What made you get into security? A It kind of started as a joke. I was working in a bar in London at the time and I wasn’t getting paid a lot of money. One of the bouncers at the bar dared me to go on the door and I did it one night and haven’t looked back since. The pay was much better and it was much more interesting work.

Q

70 • www.coremag.com.au

What kind of training do you need? You have to do a Certificate A II in Security Operations and apply for a licence. You have to update your skills regularly too. I do kick boxing and boxing but that sort of interferes with your job because that’s not what’s it all about. Security work is about preventing violence. You don’t want to get to that physical point ever if you don’t have to. I also go to the gym to work on my upper body strength which helps if I need to restrain someone. Q Are there many women in the security industry? A There are a few women, but they tend to drop in and out of the industry often because of a violent situation they’ve encountered or their partners are worried for their safety. But women are great in the industry, I find they tend to be more vigilant and use their mother’s intuition....it’s like a sixth sense.

Q

Have you been in any really frightening situations? Yes, especially in the UK A with some of the gangs in London. I’ve had knives and a gun pulled on me (it was only a replica but I didn’t know that at the time). But there are different techniques you can use to diffuse these situations and to calm people down. Does anything scare you Q these days? You build up a confidence A over the years because you get used to dealing with the same types of people. You do get an adrenalin rush but you learn to breathe through it and use it to your advantage. It’s the fight or flight syndrome. Q What do you like to do on your days off? A My husband and I like to escape to Airlie Beach and sit on the beach, get a massage, eat and sleep.

Whether you have a partner in crime, web-based love or a figment of your imagination, CORE is here to help. Ask the questions you can’t ask anyone else.

SEX @ THE IN-LAWS Is it ok to have sex when your inlaws/family are staying with you/or when you’re staying with them? It depends on family values and morals and ultimately how noisy you are! If you are a quiet achiever go for it they’ll never know! If you or your partner are a screamer and you really can’t go without, then you may want to be somewhere a little more private. You don’t want your family to think the house is undergoing renovations in the middle of the night! So how do you choose between your family of Origin and family of Creation? How do you make everyone happy for the holiday season? There is always the unsaid expectation that you will spend Christmas at your parents house and not to mention traditions in families. To be fair to your family and the in-laws you can split your time between them or you can just man up and make a decision on what you really want to do, let everyone know in advance and have a great holiday. So about the outlaws? The above is all about families who love each other and all get along but what happens when there is conflict within the family.

One person doesn’t like the other and so forth. What does that mean for the holidays? Is it ok to spend time with your family if your husband or wife will not go with you? It is common for there to be personality clashes within families and that’s ok because we are all different and unique people, however does it really need to be ALL about who YOU like and what YOU want.

It’s your time too, so talk it over with your partner and talk about your concerns and negotiate a holiday that will meet both your needs. And have a great holiday!

Do you love her enough that you can sacrifice some holiday time for her benefit? How does it benefit your relationship by putting her first? How important is it to have your own way? What’s the least amount of time you could spend with the outlaws and keep the peace? Remember you love your partner so you only have to accept the in-laws not love them.

My wife and I are arguing over how much to spend on Christmas presents. Who should you buy presents for at Christmas? This time of year can really put the pressure on the family finances and Christmas is a time of giving, so you really need to assess how much you can afford to spend right from the start. Just because you care about people doesn’t mean you have to put a dollar value on it. Money does not equal love. This Christmas give with your heart rather than your wallet. There are lots of ways to show someone they are special without it getting you or your family into debt.
