GET READY FOR A BIG SPLASH! It’s whale migration season and we’re flippin’ excited. From June to November each year, humpback whales come to swim, play and give birth to their calves in warmer waters before returning south on their annual migration to the Antarctic. A fantastic spectacle to see, the humpback whale is one of the more playful and acrobatic to watch, known for launching its massive body out of the water for brilliant breaching. From Byron Bay in northern New South Wales to Port Douglas in tropical North Queensland, there are plenty of opportunities to see these tail-slapping beauties in all their glory.

THE EXPERIENCE While many land-based vantage points will give you a glimpse of the whales, nothing can compare to being on the water with them, to appreciate their sheer size and beauty. Whale watching tours give you the opportunity to come eye to eye with this magnificent mammal, as they tilt their giant body to get a better look at you. The water ripples and then all of a sudden, a giant spray of water erupts as one surfaces to breathe. It arches its back as it prepares to dive, lifting its tail high into the air before plunging vertically into the depths below. Get so close you can see the barnacles on its dark skin then listen to the crack and slap as its mighty tail hits the water.

BYRON BAY Choose from a number of snorkelling or kayaking tours for an intimate experience. Some paddle tours also include destinations which are popular with dolphins. Whale watching cruises also depart the Byron Bay area, providing breathtaking views of breaching whales with the backdrop of the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse. Some vessels have hydrophones allowing you to hear the whales under water.

14

HERVEY BAY Australia’s most famous whale watching location, Hervey Bay provides the perfect calm conditions for whales to play. Platypus Bay, located along the west coast of Fraser Island, is a safe haven for adolescent whales, pregnant females, mothers and calves to rest and play as they prepare for their long journey south. Choose from a varying range of whale watching tours to suit every desire and budget. Some tours even include swimming with the whales, a bucket-listworthy experience. Combine the best of both worlds with a whale watching tour as well as a trip to World Heritage listed, Fraser Island.

THE WHITSUNDAYS Ocean Dynamics offer a choice of two boutique whale watching experiences, from June to September. Its popular Ocean Free excursion includes a barbecue lunch as well as a walk on one of the Whitsunday’s stunning beaches. Bareboating allows you to plan your own whale watch adventure in your own time. Little can compare to waking with the sunrise and the magical cries of whales as they sing to each other underwater.

CAIRNS AND THE TROPICAL NORTH The best time for whale watching on Cairns’ Great Barrier Reef is between May and September, depending on the type of whale you would like to see. Dwarf Minke Whales start to appear on the northern Ribbon Reefs (approximately 240km north of Cairns) from May onwards. Humpback Whales will more likely be seen in the waters off Cairns during July, August and September. Join a whale watching tour or for the opportunity to swim with Dwarf Minke whales, check out some of the dive or snorkel tour options to the Ribbon Reefs. For a birds-eye view, check out the packages offered by Nautilus Aviation. Get dropped off on a pristine sandy cay in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef for a chance to see the whales from above.

Get off the beaten track Enjoy superb beaches snorkelling and swimming amongst the stunning scenery of this tropical playground with the opportunity to see reef fish, dolphins, manta rays, turtles, dugongs. Suitable for the whole family, with our skis taking up to 2 adults and 1 child per ski. Start making your holiday memories. Departing daily Montes Reef Resort. Each year between May and November, Australia’s eastern coastline comes alive with the artistic acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Antarctic waters, these impressive mammals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth.

MIGALOO, BAHLOO AND CHALKIE – THE FAMOUS WHITE WHALES Perhaps the most famous humpback whale in the world, Migaloo is the distinctive white whale who is regularly seen during migration season in Queensland waters. While it is thought that Migaloo may be the only completely white whale in the world, there are two other predominantly white whales which can also be seen in the Whitsundays; Bahloo, and the cheeky Chalkie, who was born in the Whitsundays in 2011. Chalkie made his return to the Whitsundays in 2015 and can be identified by a black spot on his tail fin.

DID YOU KNOW? The Humpback Whale has no teeth, instead they have baleen plates, which act like a giant sieve. The Humpback Whale has two blow holes, one for each lung. Humpback whales migrate around 5000km on average, up to 10,000km, one of the longest migratory journeys of any mammal on Earth.

HOW YOU CAN HELP PROTECT WHALES? Please don’t litter; rubbish that ends up in the ocean can be deadly to marine animals. Always stay at least 100 meters away from whales and never touch or feed them, even if they approach you. If boating, check the guidelines for your local area in regard to the distances you must stay away from them. Report any injured or stranded whales to your local environment agency.

MARINE TOURS Tail-slapping, breaching, pectoral slapping or spy-hopping; the magnificent marine mammals of Hervey Bay will take your breath away as you get up close and personal with them in the ocean. Or imagine the exhilaration of being immersed in the water close to Humpback whales.

YOUR DAY WITH BLUE DOLPHIN From July to October, Hervey Bay provides the best location in the world to experience Humpback whales as they rest and play in the calm waters inside of Fraser Island.

My initial worry was whether or not we would see any whales, I shouldn’t have worried! There were so many whales it was far more than I had dreamed. Watching them at the surface slapping their tails on the water and we even had some breaching, was an unforgettable experience. The one particular highlight I will never forget is the opportunity to come face to face in the water with the whales. This is one of those ‘pinch me’ moments that are truly special. On this tour, an immersive platform allows you to come face to face with the whales in the ocean within the safety of the vessel. Not only is this safe for passengers, but it has less impact on the whales too, ensuring they aren’t disturbed in their natural environment.

With over 30 years of marine experience, the knowledge and passion of the crew from Blue Dolphin Marine Tours is second to none. Offering one of the most comprehensive whale watching tours in Australia, be entertained by expert commentary as you are taken directly to waters where the whales frolic.

WHERE IS THE TOUR LOCATED?

With a maximum of 24 passengers at any time, the lack of crowding means you will have exceptional views of the whales.

THE COAST OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities, a rugged hinterland and hundreds of annual sunshine hours, the East Coast is where Australia shines. Once you venture out of the capital cities and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW? Byron Bay is Australia’s most easterly point, the first place on the mainland to see the sun rise. A surf haven for wave riders, Byron Bay has earned its reputation as a world-class surf destination. But if you’ve never picked up a board before, never fear, Byron Bay still provides a veritable feast of attractions; from music festivals and art studios to markets, organic food, cultural tours and natural beauty. While it still retains an alternative vibe and laid-back atmosphere, Byron Bay is a destination for discerning travellers wishing to explore its stretches of pristine coastline, hinterland waterfalls and rainforest retreats. MUST DO: Once a hippie community hidden in the rainforest, Nimbin provides an insight into the alternative lifestyle that embodies the Byron shire today. The village is as intriguing as it is quirky, with a fascinating mural streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades. Continue your journey north across the border into Queensland, where the beer is cold and the sun is hot.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique dick-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays.

Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship. For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit bi-plane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts. The exotic rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled inbetween these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above the lush rainforest canopy. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be more than 135 million years old.

20

Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name! Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast, and the birthplace of Queensland, on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Heart Reef. The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

DID YOU KNOW? Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island is 120km in length. It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on high-elevation sand dunes! Visit famous 75-mile beach, see migratory humpback whales during the winter months and view native dingoes on the beach.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Australia’s East Coast is a land of possibility. It’s your time to shine!

From Cairns to Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland is an area so magical, you would swear you had entered the pages of a fantasy fiction novel. One of the most distinctive and diverse examples of Mother Nature on Earth, the ancient rainforest which blankets the hinterland is home to some of the most spectacular natural and adventure attractions in Australia.

CAIRNS

So, you want to venture into the rainforest? Let’s start in the tropical city of Cairns, where the rainforest sprawls down to the coastline. The easiest and most exhilarating way to see this ancient rainforest is to book a trip on the Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Rail. The Skyrail gondola transports you over and through the rainforest canopy. It stops at select locations along the way, allowing you to alight and walk the easy-grade boardwalks through the rainforest to view the mighty Barron Falls. At the top, you will arrive in the rainforest village of Kuranda, a vibrant artesian village filled with art, markets, a variety of food and an array of wildlife experiences. Stay a day or spend a week immersing yourself in this elevated paradise. For a different view of the rainforest on your return to Cairns, book a ticket on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Ride in restored railcars and view spectacular waterfalls and rainforest panoramas as you gently wind back down the mountain. If you are looking for a taste of adventure, there are many adrenalin-pumping activities to undertake in the rainforest. Try a bungy jump with AJ Hackett, swing through treetop canopy with Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours, white water raft over rapids or take a crocodile tour on the Barron River.

PORT DOUGLAS AND CAPE TRIBULATION

The Daintree rainforest is a world heritage listed rainforest, home to the largest range of plants and animals on earth. It is also the largest area of rainforest in Australia, spanning approximately 1200 square kilometres. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be more than 135 million years old. This ecologically diverse and fascinating corner of the world offers a natural holiday that few other places on Earth can match. Hiking trails, scenic lookouts and swimming holes are waiting to be explored. The best way to experience all the Daintree Rainforest has to offer is to immerse yourself below its verdant canopy overnight. A range of eco-friendly resorts, retreats and lodges provide accommodation to suit every desire and budget. 24

AVIATION From Rainforest to Reef in One Day!

From the rainbow of colour on the Great Barrier Reef to the wonderland of waterfalls hidden in the rainforest, which adventure do you choose first? What if we told you that you can explore the best of both in one day!

WHAT IS THE RAINFOREST – REEF 1 DAY TOUR WITH NAUTILUS AVIATION?

Undoubtedly, the best ways to view both the rainforest and the reef are to see them from above and become immersed within them. This incredible tour combines the best of both worlds into an action-packed one day tour with a train, cableway, helicopter and dive boat. The adventure begins at the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway, where you will wind your way through the Barron Gorge among some of the oldest rainforest on Earth in a vintage train. From your picturesque destination of Kuranda Village, it’s time to descend through the layers of rainforest canopy in a gondola on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Following the rainforest Skyrail journey, you will transfer to the helicopter departure lounge for a spectacular scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef. During the winter months, it is possible to spot migrating whales from the air, a breathtaking sight. After landing on a floating pontoon helipad located at Hastings Reef, on Outer Great Barrier Reef, you will be met by Down Under Dive for an unforgettable afternoon of coral viewing and snorkelling and a classic Australian barbecue lunch. If you’re keen for a dive, this can be included as an add-on experience. To return to Cairns, enjoy a leisurely cruise with a complimentary glass of wine and live entertainment.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR?

Every single facet was a highlight! The gondola ride through the rainforest and Barron Falls is a spectacular part of the day, but the most thrilling is the helicopter ride. Sweeping over the water, seeing the reef from above, gliding over sandy cays; it was one of the most exhilarating and picturesque experiences of my life. The snorkelling was fantastic too, being immersed in the reef and seeing the colourful fish, wow what a day to remember! It is the only tour I can think of where you can experience a scenic train ride, a gondola ride, a helicopter flight and an ocean cruise in a one-day tour!

WHERE IS THE TOUR LOCATED?

The tour includes a complimentary pick up and drop off from accommodation in Cairns, so no need to find your way to them, they will provide a door-to-door service. To book, phone (07) 4034 9000. Snakes Alive! Meet the Most Venomous Snakes on the planet at Billabong Sanctuary Every day at noon, our Rangers step into the Snake Pit (pictured) to showcase one of the top ten most venomous snakes on earth: It might be an inland taipan, an eastern brown, a coastal taipan, death adder, red-bellied black snake or mulga (king brown). Imagine being inches away from fangs that could deliver enough venom to kill 100,000 mice! There’s no risk to spectators, as the high walls and hardened glass viewing panels allow easy safe viewing. Nevertheless, it is a thrill to be so close to a potentially lethal reptile. The Rangers are not putting on this show just for the adrenalin rush of handling highly venomous creatures. They talk about safe behaviour in snake country (virtually all of Australia) as well as the need for conservation of these vital predators. Snakes are not naturally aggressive towards humans. What is described as an ‘attack’ is usually defensive behaviour because the snake has been startled or threatened. Those who do fall victim to snake bite for whatever reason are lucky to be in Australia: Thanks to research at the University of Melbourne, there is anti-venom available to treat bites from all species of venomous snakes in Australia. DID YOU KNOW? On average, only about 2 people per year die in Australia from snake bites. The majority of deaths are caused by the eastern brown snake (pictured). This is not because it’s more aggressive (unless provoked) but because it has adapted so well to human settlement, thriving on rats and mice in suburban backyards and cultivated fields. DID YOU KNOW? To produce snake antivenom, medical staff at the Commonwealth Serum Lab in Melbourne inject horses with non-lethal doses of venom , then extract and purify the antibodies produced. (The horses are not harmed at all, and the procedures are painless). All the venom used at CSL is obtained by ‘milking’ snakes at the Australian Reptile Park in Sydney. DID YOU KNOW? The most venomous snake on earth is the inland taipan, yet not a single human death from this species has been recorded. Why not? They live in remote parts of central Australia, far from human habitation.

DID YOU KNOW – Over 80% of all snake bites occur when people are trying to catch or kill the snake.

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please, and as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform about many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Billabong Sanctuary has 2 star attractions when it comes to crocodiles. Bully who is the larger of the two weighing in at 750 kgs and measuring 4.5m in length. Bully arrived at Billabong Sanctuary in 2013 trapped at Halifax, north of Innisfail and due to his weight, his crate had to be transferred into his enclosure by crane. At the popular feeding show, Bully will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of our experienced rangers. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. Then there is Jupiter, who is a whopping 500 kgs and 4.3m in length. Jupiter was caught off Townsville’s Strand beach in early February 2016. Estimated at 60 years of age, Jupiter has battle scars down the side of his body from confrontations with other large crocodiles. Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles, only $10 to experience the action. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

WHAT MAKES BUSH OASIS CARAVAN PARK A GREAT PLACE TO STAY?

There are so many positives. The warm welcome when we arrived, the owners, Fiona and Martin really go above and beyond to ensure your comfort. My favourite place to spend time in the park is the heated pool and spa complete with rock waterfalls. It’s Australia’s first adults-only pool and spa, after a long drive, it was just heaven being able to have a relaxing soak with some peace and quiet. In the cooler months, the pool is also heated – a rare luxury found in the tropical north!

Those with caravans can select from concrete slab, grassy and drive-thru sites, and some even have their own ensuite! Large sites cater to busses and coaches and open-air sites allow for solar and satellites.

Bush Oasis specialises in catering for mature travellers and grey nomads. There are no playgrounds or jumping pillows here, keeping prices to a minimum and providing a relaxed, peaceful environment.

A range of self-contained cabins are also available, featuring private bathrooms, kitchens and living areas as well as comfortable queen size beds with linen provided.

The facilities are exceptional; the shared bathrooms are immaculate and very nicely presented. The camp kitchen is superb, very spacious, you can easily have four or five groups of people cooking at the same time without getting in each other’s way.

WHERE IS BUSH OASIS CARAVAN PARK LOCATED?

Conveniently located near the Bruce Highway, Bush Oasis Caravan Park is 15km south of Townsville. It is beside Billabong Sanctuary, a short stroll away, which also includes a tourist information centre. For those towing caravans, the location is perfect, not having to navigate through the city.

The wildlife is a feature here too, the caravan park has regular visits from wallabies, magpie geese and even Tawny Frogmouths (a bird similar to an owl). Live musicians often perform at Bush Oasis, keep an eye on their Facebook page to see when an event is next scheduled.

Magnetic Island

Getting around

Magnetic Island is 8km offshore from Townsville, a quick 20-minute journey by ferry. The island is 52km2, of which 70% is national park. It is a stunning natural paradise with a relaxing tropical lifestyle. Just over 2000 people live on the island all year round, and they are welcoming to everyone, being always happy to stop and have a chat.

The wonderfully winding scenic roads are great fun to drive on and the best way to explore the island. Each bend reveals a different jaw-dropping bay or landscape to marvel at and it is all you can do to concentrate on the road ahead. Most places are suitable for any vehicle, but there are a couple of 4-wheel-drive only tracks. One of the 4WD tracks goes to Radical Bay which is simply stunning. The Topless Car Company rent out bright pink topless cars which are a fun and exciting way of exploring the island, with the wind rushing through your hair the open-air seats give you a real taste of the island.

History Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the island and have lived there for thousands of years. In 1770, Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour. While he was there his compass was affected by a strange magnetic force on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Island’.

Geography Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. Mainly composed of granite, it is the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away but the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched, natural beauty. There are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by a magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, along with magnificent vines, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

WHY CHOOSE TOPLESS CAR RENTALS?

Magnetic Island is best explored by car as the island is full of scenic, winding roads offering stunning views out to sea that are fun to traverse in a vehicle. Travelling the island by car meant we could explore at our own pace and spend time in the places we liked most. I was travelling with my dad and I knew how much he loves convertible cars so Topless Car Rentals seemed like the perfect choice for us!

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

All you need is a current manual international driver’s license and you are all set. Customers can travel up to 40km without having to pay any extra for fuel (which is easy to do on a 12km island) and the depot is a one minute walk from the islands ferry terminal. The only rule is to avoid the islands un-sealed roads so we couldn’t drive down to the some of the secluded bays. This still left us with plenty to do though and it was invigorating to feel the breeze in our hair and jet around the island in an open top car.

18 trips. 20 minutes. Your quickest link to Magnetic Island.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT TOPLESS CAR RENTALS?

The easy walk from the marina to get to our hire car was very convenient. We were met by extremely friendly staff who showed us straight to our car. The topless car has a fun feeling and has no doors so you need to swing your leg over to get in. It is also well-suited to island travelling as it is small and compact, easy to maneuver.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THE TOPLESS CAR TO A FRIEND?

Of course! We found it to be an exhilarating and fun way to explore the island. It was easy to drive and the open top meant we could see, feel and breathe the island atmosphere.

HI, MY NAME IS SAMMY ATKINSON. I AM 29 YEARS OLD AND THE PROUD OWNER OF HORSESHOE BAY RANCH ON MAGNETIC ISLAND. EVERY DAY WE TAKE PEOPLE OUT ON AMAZING HORSEBACK RIDING ADVENTURES, ALONG THE STUNNING HORSESHOE BAY BEACH AND THEN BAREBACK INTO THE OCEAN FOR A TRULY BREATHTAKING, ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. IF YOU LOVE HORSES, YOU WILL LOVE THIS TOUR! COME AND CHECK US OUT.

Sammy Atkinson Meet

owner and guide at Horseshoe Ranch, Magnetic Island!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

WHAT WILL PEOPLE LEARN ON YOUR TOUR?

I am North Queensland born and bred. Growing up on a cattle station, my mum had all us kids on the back of a horse before we could walk. She was, and still is, a very talented horse rider and taught me a great deal of what I know today. I have spent most of my life in the saddle but that is where my love of horses first came from.

If you have never ridden a horse before, you will learn the basics of controlling your horse. You will have full control of your own horse for the whole tour and our experienced guides are on hand to answer any questions you may have. We give everyone the opportunity to go trotting and most people will master the rising trot by the end of the tour. For the more experienced riders, going for a canter is sometimes also an option. Of course, for the more laid back riders, you are more than welcome to just take a leisurely stroll all the way to the beach and back.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? I first came to Maggie in 2007 and didn’t want to leave. Bluey’s Horse Ranch was for sale and so in 2008 I bought the business and not long after that we became Horseshoe Bay Ranch. After 8 long years of learning, making improvements and a great deal of help from family and friends, we now have a business and tour experience we are extremely proud of. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR TOUR? Swimming with the horses of course! Also the numerous wildlife encounters. We see koalas, wallabies, sea eagles and turtles on most of our tours and even whales in the winter months. My favourite, though, would have to be riding through the swarms of brilliantly coloured Blue Tiger butterflies which only come out at certain times of the year.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT A HORSESHOE BAY RANCH EXPERIENCE? When we get to the beach, the saddles come off and we jump back on bareback for a swim with our horse. This is what makes Horseshoe Bay Ranch unique and different to any other beach ride. You don’t have to have prior experience to do this part of the tour and children as young as 6 can experience this. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT ON THIS TOUR?

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Two full hours of horse riding bliss. We first trek through tranquil bushland spotting numerous wallabies, bird life, koalas and our famous blue tiger butterflies as we wind our way down to the far end of Horseshoe Bay.

The horses! Working with horses every day is a dream. It’s not for everyone but definitely for me. They become your family, your best friends and I couldn’t imagine a life without them. Secondly, our customers. I meet so many interesting people on a daily basis. I get to share our horses and beautiful island with them and watch them experience swimming with their horse for the first time. They tell me every day I have one of the best jobs in the world, if not the best, and I believe them.

As you get closer to the beach, we advise guests to keep an eye out for our sea eagles which nest along our trails at certain times of the year. The first steps onto the beach alone are magical, but riding into the water on the back of your horse is by far the most breathtaking experience of the whole tour. Saddles come off, as does your helmet, shoes, and even clothes! (Be sure to wear your swimmers underneath!!) Once out of the water we get dressed and back on for a short trek back to the ranch.

THE WILD SIDE OF NATURE IS AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE ON YOUR BUCKET-LIST? Bungalow Bay Koala Village is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Australia for getting up close and intimate with an array of native wildlife. Your adventure begins in the sun-drenched tropical city of Townsville, where you will catch a ferry across to Magnetic Island. “Maggie” as the island is known as by locals, is a picturesque haven with an abundance of beaches, restaurants and cafes, adventure activities and accommodation. The ferry ride is a cruisy 25 minutes where you can relax and await your island adventure. Once you’ve arrived at Magnetic Island, a local bus will meet all Sealink ferry services. Jump on the Horseshoe Bay bus for a 15 minute ride (7kms) and you will be dropped right at the front door of Bungalow Bay Koala Village. Offering a relaxed wildlife tour unlike any other, the island-based rangers deliver an up-close and personal experience with the sanctuary’s star attractions. Join in on one of three daily tours at 10 a.m. 12 noon and 2:30 p.m. for the opportunity to learn about each magnificent creature, with plenty of holding, stroking and even kissing! Shadow, the resident red-tailed cockatoo, will happily give you a kiss in exchange for a sunflower seed held between your lips. Have a cuddle with one of the park’s favourite koalas; Thor, Pebbles or Christina and pose for photos. Wrap a giant python over your shoulders and feel the unusual skin of this large reptile. Hold a juvenile crocodile and then see the larger ones sunning themselves beside the water. This advanced eco-tourism experience showcases an appreciation of Australia’s native wildlife while allowing you to interact with it one-on-one. The best way to experience the Koala Park is to stay at Bungalow Bay, which offers a range of accommodation, suiting backpackers, couples and families. Its bundle packages are great value and include accommodation, wildlife sanctuary entry, koala cuddle and souvenir photo, free welcome drink at The Deck bar, full day snorkel hire and return island ferry tickets. The only resort in Australia with its own on-site wildlife park, Bungalow Bay is the perfect place to discover the wild side of nature. Visit: www.bungalowbay.com.au for more information.

One hour south of Townsville and two hours north of the Whitsundays is the quiet, scenic region known as the Burdekin, home to two main centres, Ayr and Home Hill. With its vibrant community life, lush farmland, magnificent wetlands and extensive natural pursuits like fishing, birdwatching and scuba diving, this lesser-known region is well-worth a visit.

Plantation Park A popular place in the Burdekin for visitors to take photos is located in Plantation Park, Ayr. The giant carpet snake is an impressive feature, and makes a fantastic backdrop. This 60 metre artwork depicts Gubulla Munda, the Aboriginal totem and the protective spirit for the Birri Gubba people. Gubulla Munda holds sacred cultural and spiritual significance to the Traditional Owners. The Gudjuda Reference Group commissioned the large sculpture Gubulla Munda Dreaming, which was constructed in 2004. It was painted by aboriginal artists. The monument was created to celebrate and promote indigenous culture.

Boat ramps and fishing hot spots

Home Hill Rest Stop

By far the district’s greatest claim to fame is its fishing. The Burdekin is well-known for its barramundi, mudcrabs, other estuary species and off-coast reef fishing. You can launch your boat at one of the boat ramps to chase the elusive barra or try a your hand at beach fishing. Council maintains eight boat ramps located within the shire on behalf of Queensland Transport. These boat ramps are located at Cromarty Creek, Barramundi (Morris’s) Creek, Barratta Creek, Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Hell Hole, Groper Creek and Wallace Creek.

Home Hill offers a free 48 hour stop over for caravans, motor trailers and camper vans at its rest stop conveniently located on Railway Avenue, right in the centre of town. Wash the dust of the journey off in a free shower and cook dinner the electric bbq provided, prepare your meal on a stainless steel bench and sit around a picnic table. This is rest stop with a difference! Its central location means it is a short stroll to get bbq supplies or find the local tavern for a cold beverage.

If you could describe the perfect weather, then the Whitsundays and Mackay would be it. June and July is the beginning of what the locals call a summery winter. You will wake to cool, crisp, foggy and peaceful mornings, then beautiful clear and sunny days and evenings full of stars and the smell of fires burning. Temperatures are rarely seen above 28 degrees celsius during the day and hitting lows of just 5 to 10 degrees at night in the depths of winter. Imagine the weather in heaven and experience it throughout the Whitsundays this winter.

Swim at Bluewater Lagoon Perfect for swimming year-round, Mackay’s Bluewater Lagoon is the place to relax and refresh during a hot tropical day. Featuring three age-appropriate lagoons, a children’s water playground and a water slide, it’s fun and refreshing for everyone. Best of all, entry is free, with free electric barbecue facilities to enjoy a lagoon-side lunch.

Visit the sparkling silica sands of Whitehaven Beach Voted the third best beach in the world because of its amazing bright white sands, Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island which is the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsunday group. Whitehaven Beach stretches over seven kilometres and boasts brilliant white silica sand that is among the purest in the world. Sink your feet into the sand and wade into the warm waves that gently lap the shore and you’ll soon realise why people come here from all over the world. At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning inlet where the tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours and swirling sand formations known as the ‘swirling sands’. Whitehaven Beach can be experienced in several ways. If you’re interested in a day trip there are ferries, yachts, power boats and luxury cruising yachts that depart from Airlie Beach. A variety of sailing companies also offer multi-day charters.

Walk around Mackay’s majestic botanical gardens

Colour Me Crazy Once upon a time the Princess of Creativity decided to build a little castle down a dusty lane in a small town called Proserpine. She worked hard and her little castle grew in fame and wonder, all the village people spread the word and the little castle grew to be “the jewel and pressie palace of ProsVegas”. The Princess of Creativity (AKA, Princess Robbie) could not keep up with all the work, help was needed, so fairy helpers answered the call.

Take a walk through the stunning tropical gardens right next to the Pioneer River in Mackay. Soak up the sounds of indigenous birdlife and learn more about native Australian flora and fauna. There are 3kms of walking and cycling trails with a café and gallery on-site overlooking the beautiful lagoons where you can have a cup of coffee and admire the view.

Watch a sunrise with wallabies on Casuarina beach Spend an evening in Cape Hillsborough National Park and wake before the sun rises to enjoy a spectacular Australian experience. Take a few steps onto the beach at Casuarina Bay and watch the spectacular sunrise, illuminating the friendly wallabies who venture to the surf for their morning breakfast.

An award winning accommodation provider, Rose Bay Resort offers self-contained 2 bedroom penthouses, 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom apartments and 1 bedroom studios. Soft fresh towels are provided, so is tea and coffee, kitchenette facilities plus shower gel etc. We were also pleased to discover Foxtel T.V. Our room had a balcony looking out to sea, we could hear waves gently lapping the shore as we went to sleep at night and we woke up for a stunning sunrise that streamed across the bay.

Take a day trip out to the Whitsunday Islands A day trip out to the islands is a must-do activity during your stay in Airlie Beach. There are a huge variety of day trips on offer and you can read about them in this magazine! Choose a classic sailing vessel and experience a sedate, romantic way of exploring the islands, or, sign-up to an adrenaline-packed thrilling ride on one of the faster boats. There are even some tours that give you the opportunity to experience both in a package deal.

Take a walk along the boardwalk Whether you enjoy a soft, gentle stroll or leap out of bed in the morning for a fast jog, the Airlie Beach Bicentennial Walk-way is a simply stunning, must-do activity that everyone would enjoy. The wooden boardwalk, built in 1988, hugs the coastline and gives you uninterrupted views out to sea, almost at sea level. The 3.7km boardwalk links Airlie Beach to Abell Point Marina, and then onwards to Cannonvale Beach. The scenic round trip takes roughly 2 hours.

Saturday Markets Every Saturday, as the sun comes up, Airlie Beach foreshore comes alive. Stall holders from around the region gather to put on a lively market show. Mango sorbet fresh from Bowen, farmers selling their delicious homegrown vegetables, stunning Australian opals, nautical giftware, homemade jewelry and fashion, this market has you browsing for hours. Buskers are playing music, there is sandcastle art and you can even get a massage at a bargain $20 for 20 minutes!

Whitsunday Segway Tours What better way to venture overland than on your very own Segway? Introduced to the region a couple of years ago, the Segway tours are a fun, educational way to explore the region. If you are not yet familiar with the term Segway, it is a two-wheeled electric vehicle used as a convenient way to travel around towns and cities. It is a self-balancing device and its name is derived from the word “segue” which literally means “follows”. Whitsunday Segway Tours offer the following:

Rainforest Discovery Tour Ride your own Segway through the spectacular Conway National Park rainforest, along the Whitsunday Great Walk. Surrounded by lush rainforest and flowing streams, our experienced tour guide will share interpretive commentary, highlighting the local flora and fauna and points of interest during the 9km round journey.

Sunset and Tapas Boardwalk Tour Ride your own Segway along the Whitsunday Bicentennial Boardwalk overlooking the pristine waters of Pioneer Bay. The tour begins in Airlie Beach and glides on the boardwalk along the water’s edge past Abell Point Marina, Shingley Beach and the Whitsunday Botanic Gardens, through to Cannonvale Beach.

Drive yourself around the beautiful Whitsundays Islands with Boab Boats Why go at everyone else’s pace when you can hire a boat and drive yourself around the islands? Boab Boats have a variety of vessels available for hire. There is the Sports Rider, which is 5.7m in length and takes up to 6 people. The Sports Rider gives you total freedom and can go to all islands including Whitehaven Beach. This vessel is a nice cruising boat for the family. They also have Centre Cabs which take up to seven people, again giving you access to all the islands. This is best boat to choose for fishing because the driving consul is in the centre allowing you to walk all round boat when you need to pull in that big fish. For smaller groups, try the Kakadu tinny. This is 4.3m in length and takes up to four people. On a calm day it can get out to South Molle Island and Long Island plus all along the Airlie foreshore. The Kakadu is also a good boat for river cruising and going out to the Proserpine Dam. All other boats can also be taken to the dam if desired. Boab Boats offer two packages, there is a ‘walk-on walk-off’ price which they get into the water for you. Alternatively, for a lower price, you can book the tow-away package which you can drive down to the ramp yourself. With this package you can pick boat up the night before so you can pre-pack. All you need to be able to hire a boat is a valid boat license, an international license is also valid. New to the fleet are two jet-skis and all you need is a pwc license, then you are free to jet around the Whitsundays at high speed.

Revered as one of the iconic writers of American fiction, Ernest Hemingway also travelled the world extensively. Hemingway’s at Abell Point Marina features modern Australian cuisine with an influence from many of the countries Hemingway travelled. He was also fond of oysters, the oyster menu is a signature feature of this popular new restaurant.

HOW ABOUT WINES AND COCKTAILS?

WHAT SORT OF ATMOSPHERE CAN GUESTS EXPECT FROM A DINING EXPERIENCE AT HEMINGWAY'S?

Come down to Hemingway’s for lunch or dinner and experience for yourself the newest addition to the Whitsunday food scene. Whether it be a romantic dinner for two or a group booking for a special occasion, once you have experienced Hemingway’s you will be back for more.

Boutique wines pair perfectly with the artistic menu. Uncommon wines, difficult to find elsewhere in Airlie Beach, add to the luxurious dining experience. Hemingway’s mixologist, Sam, has created a signature Hemingway’s Daquiri and the Smokey Rum, both which must be tried!

A fine dining experience, focused on great food and service in a stunning waterfront setting. The décor is a blend of coastal chic and Hampton’s style, so fits perfectly with the marina setting. Relax in comfort and enjoy a delicious meal overlooking the award-winning Abell Point Marina and the Whitsunday islands. A pianist plays most evenings and a superb array of quality wines and craft beers is part of the first-class experience.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM ON THE NEW MENU?

There is a great array of seafood, testament to the quality fresh produce available locally. The menu highlights the best local produce and suppliers, giving each dish a superbly fresh appeal. The oysters, of course, are sublime. Try the ‘apple cider emulsion - fish roe’ or the ‘pink champagne – lychee.’ The signature dessert is the Night Cap, an edible cigar, which pays homage to the great man Hemingway himself so was keen on a cigar and a glass of rum at the end of a good meal.

How do you make the most out of the Whitsundays within 24 hours? This tour combines Whitehaven Beach with a night’s accommodation in an exclusive tropical resort as well as an exhilarating ride on a speed boat plus snorkelling. It’s the ultimate thrill and chill package.

WHAT IS RIDE TO PARADISE? Ride to Paradise by name and certainly by nature! The tour begins in Airlie Beach at Abell Point Marina, where you meet your friendly and entertaining tour guides. Board the comfortable 300 horsepower vessel for an exhilarating ride through the Whitsunday Islands. Music playing, refreshing sea salt spray flying and a fast ride across the water, let your hair out and prepare to smile like you’ve never smiled before! You’ll be taken to a beautiful snorkelling destination, where you can swim with an amazing amount of tropical fish and relax on the sand. Back on the speedboat you will be whisked away to the exclusive Paradise Cove Resort. After being welcomed with cheese and snacks, enjoy the many inclusive activities on offer; tennis, paddleboard, kayak, or simply relax in a hammock and take in the tranquility of Paradise Cove. A delicious dinner is prepared for you, then enjoy starlight serenity as night falls with toasted marshmallows over a fire pit. The next day after a hearty breakfast it’s back on the speedboat for exploration of world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Climb the lookout to view the swirling colours of Hill Inlet before enjoying time on Whitehaven’s pure white silica sand. The tour concludes with one last speedboat adventure back to Airlie Beach.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? Every part of it is simply breathtaking, fun and exhilarating. Being someone who can get seasick, I was anxious, but with the speed and stability of this vessel there was no chance of that, I felt amazing the entire trip and you could not wipe the grin from my face. We snorkeled in Blue Pearl bay on Hayman Island, and although I have snorkeled many times before, I’ve never seen this volume of fish! It was spectacular. Paradise Cove Resort was exactly that, paradise. I was lucky enough to share the experience with my husband and we stayed in a private villa, with a luxurious king bed. My personal highlights were taking showers under the massive outdoor rainwater showers, lying on a floating beanbag in the pool, soaking in the spa and then laying back on a beanbag on the lawn looking at the stars. Some tours only take you to the southern end of Whitehaven Beach, where this one takes you to the northern end so you can experience both Hill Inlet and Whitehaven, this is a massive advantage as both experiences are bucket-list worthy.

WHERE IS THE TOUR LOCATED? Check in to the tour office prior to departure to collect your dry bag. This is approximately the size of a small backpack and what you will need to pack all of your belongings into for the tour. You won’t need much so pack light! You can store your remaining luggage at the office for a small fee. The Whitsunday Sailing Adventures office is located at 403 Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach. The tour will depart from and return at Abell Point Marina.

THE JUXTAPOSITION OF PETRIFYING AND PEACEFUL, A SKYDIVE IS AN ADRENALIN RUSH MATCHED BY NO OTHER ACTIVITY. FROM THE MOMENT YOU TAKE THE LEAP OF FAITH, EXHILARATION AND EUPHORIA TAKE OVER YOUR BODY FOR WHAT WILL QUITE POSSIBLY BE THE BEST FEW SECONDS OF YOUR LIFE. FROM THE ROAR OF THE FREEFALL TO THE MOST PEACEFUL SILENCE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE AS YOU GLIDE BELOW YOUR CANOPY, A MILLION EMOTIONS ENVELOP YOUR BODY AS YOU DESCEND BACK TO EARTH.

Come and see why!

SO WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DO THAT OVER AND OVER AGAIN? Tripping Magazine catches up with Jason McGregor from Airlie Beach Skydivers to find out.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO AIRLIE BEACH?

“I’m originally from Shellharbour, south of Sydney. I had an opportunity to help manage a new operation, an extension of our popular drop zones. I decided to take a few days of holiday to check out Airlie Beach and loved the lush rainforest meeting the crystal blue water.”

WHY DID YOU BECOME A SKYDIVER?

“My father jumped when I was around five years old, it was something I always wanted to do. He passed away in 2007, so my brother and I decided it was time to make skydiving a reality.”

WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SKYDIVING?

“The 10 to 15 minute scenic flight is always breathtaking, being able to look at our country from above. When the aircraft door opens and you leap out, you feel the wind hit you and from that moment, all worries just disappear. After the exciting freefall, you get around five minutes of gliding under the parachute which is indescribable.”

IF SOMEONE WAS UNSURE ABOUT THEIR FIRST SKYDIVE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM? “It’s an experience full of blissfulness and one which really brightens people’s lives. We undergo strenuous training and exams and are all very experienced. They went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect, down to delivering cocktails poolside, taking my wet towel after a swim and recommending nearby attractions. They also make a fantastic coffee which can be a rarity at a hotel. The atmosphere at dinner is memorable, dining poolside with live entertainment and delicious locally-inspired cuisine. Breakfast is a must-do, the buffet is exceptional with plenty of choice and food is replenished frequently. It’s affordable luxury, providing service well above its price-point, delivering an exceptional Whitsunday experience.

OCEANSIDE

MOTEL

Peaceful, professional or playful, Potter’s Oceanside Motel is the ideal location for rest, work or adventure.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ACCOMMODATION?

I was attracted to Potter’s Oceanside Motel because of its number one rating on TripAdvisor, to see how a motel in Mackay could stack up against other accommodation providers across Australia.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO A FRIEND?

Absolutely. With a range of rooms including inter-connecting family suites and disability rooms, I would recommend Potter’s Oceanside Motel to anyone visiting Mackay who is looking for value for money, old-fashioned service, great food and a peaceful night’s sleep.

It was later that I discovered the impressive haul of awards this unassuming motel had recently won, including a 4.9 out of 5 from industry giants, Hotels. com. This rating score is calculated from guest reviews, and rated Potter’s Oceanside Motel as the best in the world. Yep. In the world. Only one other property worldwide received the same score.

FROM THE MOMENT I ARRIVED, I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED.

The welcoming service is a breath of fresh air. Managers, Jill and Richard, go out of their way to ensure every guest is treated as though they are the only ones staying at the motel. A stay at this motel comes with a raft of free inclusions; unlimited Wi-Fi, airport and CBD transfers, gym access at Anytime Fitness, and if you check out on a Sunday, you receive a free late check-out of up to 5 p.m! There is also a saltwater pool, poolside barbecues, ice machines and bicycles to explore the local area, as well as Tesla charging ports, all available for use free of charge. The on-site restaurant serves value-for-money breakfasts, seven days per week, and dinners are available on selected weeknights. You can even order a freshly-made barista coffee, a rare inclusion for a motel. King-size beds with luxuriously soft king pillows complete the experience. Potter’s Oceanside Motel really do offer ‘more than you would expect from a motel.’

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF POTTER’S OCEANSIDE MOTEL?

Peaceful serenity. Potter’s Oceanside Motel is uniquely placed in East Mackay, away from main road traffic. I couldn’t believe how quiet the location is, all I could hear was the breeze rustling through the mangroves and birdsong. The service is above anything I had experienced before, attentive yet unobtrusive, the experience was excellent. I can see why this motel is constantly awarded highly for its service.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

Located at 2C Gordon Street East, Potter’s Oceanside Motel is a short stroll from beautiful Town Beach and the start of the Bluewater Trail. It is less than a 10 minute drive from Mackay Airport and two minutes into the Mackay CBD.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN

THE BUZZING VIBE OF

It’s mainland Australia’s most easterly point, the first place to see the sun, and some say, the first place to understand the true meaning of life. That’s because Byron Bay is more than a location; it’s an ideal, a lifestyle and a destination for those seeking more. A place where moments matter more than money and the smiles are as warm as the midday sun. It has an energetic enthusiasm and zest for life, yet can also be one of the most relaxing places to rest and rejuvenate. Once you have become accustomed to the relaxed vibe time seemingly stands still. Byron’s sundrenched beaches come alive with an eclectic mix of artists, surfers, locals and tourists. The town is a blend of bohemian and modern coastal, where rustic cafes and decadent restaurants serve world-class cuisine.

HOW TO GET THERE

BEACHES AND SURF

Domestic flights arrive at Ballina Airport, a 25-minute drive south of Byron Bay, or at Gold Coast Airport, a 45-minute drive north of Byron Bay.

The northern New South Wales Coast has been a mecca for surfers for years. Why not book lessons with a surf school and you’ll be standing on the waves in no time? With seemingly endless pockets of coastline to explore, each beach has its own charm. Find one to meditate on, relax in the sun, swim, surf, kayak, paddle board or simply take a stroll along the golden sand.

By car, Byron Bay is an easy two-hour drive south from Brisbane. Regular rail services and bus companies operate into Byron Bay. Bus services from Brisbane, Sydney and other regional towns along the eastern coast provide a budget alternative to reach this vibrant destination.

ABORIGINAL HERITAGE The NSW north coast is the traditional territory of the Bundjalung people, made up of two clans. The Arakwal in the south and the Minjunbal to the north. Protection and preservation of cultural heritage and the broader environment is very important to people of the wider Bundjalung nation. Aboriginal culture tours are available to explore some of the culturally important sites throughout the Byron shire and to learn more about the Bunjalung people.

CAPE BYRON LIGHTHOUSE Byron Bay’s most iconic symbol, the Cape Byron Lighthouse is as visually spectacular as it is historic. Learn about its history, then enjoy Byron’s best view from the café. Enjoy a champagne picnic as the sun rises on an unforgettable tour organised by Wild Goat Events.

Don’t miss

ART, CULTURE AND MUSIC Byron Bay attracts a large number of artists who are drawn to its lifestyle for inspiration. Music can be found everywhere, from buskers on the street to live gigs in bars almost every night of the week. Byron Bay is also home to epic music festivals, including Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, to name a few.

Sunrise at The Lighthouse Sunrise and the Lighthouse is at number one. If you do anything, make sure you do the walk to the lighthouse during your time in Byron. Not only can you walk around the most eastern point of Australia, but for the true sunrise diehards, be sure to get there in the early hours of the morning, while still dark, to enjoy the first moments of sunrise to be seen in Australia. Hands down, one of the most memorable and tranquil experiences the Byron Shire has on offer would have to be doing the ‘Toast to the Sun’ at sunrise with Wild Goat Events. Katie, who is the owner and mastermind behind this luxe and unique Byron experience, is the hostess with literally the most-ess. Katie ensures that every detail from start to finish is perfect, from tailoring every menu to the taste of the individual, to ensuring the most relaxed and intimate experience possible. Wild Goat Events have definitely raised the bar in regards to the ‘finer-things’ Byron has to offer. And it is almost a certainty to be seeing whales over these winter months.

Rainforests and Waterfalls You can pretty much just take your pick of the near mythical, never-ending waterfall and rainforest discoveries the Byron Shire has on offer. Nearly every person you meet in the town of Byron, that is living here or passing through, will claim to have found or know of a ‘new’ unfound waterhole, waterfall, rainforest or hidden walking track that will lead you into a Babylon like abyss. This is not a bad thing, rather an integral part of the attraction and character of The Bay and its complexion.

Take a day trip to Nimbin or Mt Warning Where Tripping Magazine isn’t the only tripping going on! Just west of Byron will lead you along some of the most scenically beautiful views your car window may have on offer when in northern NSW. This yellow brick road will entice you to stumble across a small town known as the one and only Nimbin. Originally an old timber cutter’s and farming town, it is no longer renown for its timber cutting and farming, but more for its festivals such as Mardi Grass. It is more than safe to say that Nimbin is a true pioneer in regards to the original alternative/ hippie influenced towns across Australia. And with this, by staying true to its foundational beliefs, it has well earned the reputation as the epicentre since the early 70s. Nimbin is uniquely positioned within the Nightcap National Park, surrounded by three World Heritage listed rainforests, one being Protester Falls which is home to Australia’s first successful anti-logging campaigns. North of Byron on another spectacular drive you will find yourself being confronted with one of northern NSW’s most iconic mountains, the magnificent Mt Warning. Mt Warning is like most of the beautiful locations, places and sites you will see and visit in Australia, a sacred Aboriginal site. Be aware that wherever you are travelling within Australia there was, and in some places still is, a culture that has been living and thriving here for well over 40,000 years. How many other cultures do you know have that claim to fame???

70

The numerous artisan and farmers markets It feels like every week in or around the Byron Shire there are numerous markets of all kinds flourishing. From artisan markets to the farmer’s market’s there is certainly something for everyone. A lot of these markets can be hugely credited to the amazing work put in by the Byron Community Centre. The Byron Community Centre has an undeniably positive influence that represent that of a striving and driving energy within the local community, which has promoted the lifestyle brand attached to Byron Bay around the world.

Little Wategos beach Little Wategos Beach is by no means a secret or hidden destination, as it is only a short walk from either Wategos main car-park or the lighthouse. But believe it or not, it is likely that you may find yourself to be the only person on your arrival to this gem during the colder months. There is just something that is completely unbeatable about having whales and dolphins within a stone’s throw from where you are enjoying the beautiful pristine waters and serene beach. It doesn’t matter how many times you see resident dolphins dominating the line-up and putting surfers to shame, or the whales breaching and waving at you from the water, it never gets old.

KAYAK WITH THE WHALES May to November is the season to get up close and personal with whales as they migrate past the most easterly point of the Australian mainland Byron Bay. Cape Byron Kayaks have been operating sea kayak tours for the past 22 years and every year the anticipation of Whale Season is almost too much to bear as there is no other experience quite as unique and exhilarating as sea kayaking alongside a whale. During their northern migration, most whales come within 3 km of the NSW coast. During the southern migration Humpback whales bring their calves into the calm waters surrounding Cape Byron to rest and feed. The calves are very inquisitive and playful, they often approach our sea kayak tours with the mother at their side passing just meters from our kayaks.

Riding a wave is an exhilarating experience. Some describe the moment as breathless, with adrenalin pumping and the sun on your face, the second (or two or three if you’re lucky) that you first walk on water will infuse a love of surfing deep in your veins which remains for life. On holiday from Airlie Beach, Paul Douthwaite decided to try surfing while in Byron Bay. His one and only ever attempt to surf previously had been in Bali, which he described as ‘an epic fail.’ Paul is a dive instructor, so despite being able to master the ocean’s depths, the waves were another story. His son, Kaylem, was especially keen to give surfing a go, so Paul decided to get lessons from Mojosurf for himself and Kaylem, to see if you can teach a salty sea dog new tricks.

HOW WAS THE MOJOSURF EXPERIENCE?

It was fantastic, smiles all round and awesome memories. Our first lesson was at Lennox Head and focused on learning the correct techniques to enable you to stand on the board. On the second day we surfed at another beach north of Byron. Both beaches were beautiful and the lessons were fun and entertaining. The technique of learning to stand was broken down into simple steps by the instructor, which make the process less complicated.

DID YOU STAND?

Our instructor and his experience made all the difference. He was laid back and make you feel totally at ease, but still had control over the students. The professionalism and advice were excellent, I wish I had taken surfing lessons a long time ago.

Yes, both Kaylem and I stood which was such an epic feeling. Kaylem was a lot better at it than myself, but I was really happy with how quickly we both progressed in just two days. The second lesson was by far the most memorable because we could put into practice everything we had learned on day one and have a lot of fun.

Even Bella, our Golden Labrador, got in on the action and had a ball. She was allowed to travel on the bus and kept the surfers and instructors entertained.

WHAT IS PROVIDED FOR THE LESSON?

Absolutely everything you need is provided for you; boards, wetsuits, sunscreen and drinking water.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND MOJOSURF TO A FRIEND?

Absolutely, if I learned anything, it’s that you need to know the correct technique from the beginning. The whole lesson went for about three to four hours, including travel time, warm-up, surf safety and of course time in the water. It is a good length of time to absorb a heap of information, then spend the rest of the day putting into practice what you learned. Mojosurf make it really fun and informative; a couple of hours of lessons and your surfing experience becomes a whole lot more enjoyable.

HAS MOJOSURF INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE MORE LESSONS IN THE FUTURE?

Yes, both Kaylem and I are looking to do more lessons on our next holiday to Byron Bay. It’s a beautiful part of the world and Mojosurf have inspired us to stay longer. They have a five day package that we will book, to maximise our time on the beach and take our surfing skills to the next level! A few more lessons will give us the added confidence and skills to be able to tackle the surf for ourselves in the future.
