How about some wedding talk??? Coincidence not, because I just so happened to get married at the start of May!! Which makes me really excited to be including the Wedding Feature in this issue of Byron Life. Not only because I am on a serious high from the wedding still, but because of all of the amazing attributes our area has to share with people from all over the world for when it comes to Weddings. Has my life considerably changed since marrying the woman of my dreams now I have a ring on a particular finger and a piece of paper outlining that we are officially recognised as a married couple?? Interesting question. As a kid growing up it was safe to say that half of my friend’s parents, including my own, were separated or divorced, with a large number of other marriages staying together for all the wrong reasons. So my answer to this is, no not really…. But the feelings attached to the meaning behind the grand design of marriage, this is what has been truly powerful and still catching me off guard. For so many people before me and for those that will get the opportunity to experience it in the future, it truly is the most significant moment/ event/ day/ memory/ experience/ ceremony or what ever you may want to call it, in your life. And I couldn’t imagine having done it with anyone else I have met through my time here so far on this planet.

ABOUT GETTING MARRIED Welcome to the second issue of Byron Life. After such an amazingly positive response from the first issue I would not be able to continue with out first thanking anyone and everyone that was involved in helping enable Byron Life to come to life. Another huge thank you to the incredible people and businesses from the community that reached out to Byron Life over the past 2 months in their unique number of ways. Once again we are at that time of year where we come creeping into the colder months. With this fate comes those bliss beautiful ‘blue-bird’ days that usually have our overseas visitors saying, ‘this is better than our summers back home’. For the surfing community, we have already benefited from the good deeds of Huey having stewed up some mentionable swells and waves for our enjoyment. And here is to the whales that have started their migration route which brings them from the cold waters of the south and up our east coast of Australia to the stunning warmer waters of the north. What more can you ask for???

Karena Wynn-Moylan

Award-winning

Arts Canvass

H

er artful articulation is unmistakable and as such, Karena Wynn-Moylan rarely has a week go by where she isn’t stopped by someone who recognises her voice.

As presenter of the award-winning Art Canvass segment on Bay FM, Karena shows how having more than one arrow in her quiver has culminated in numerous international accolades. The fine artist left home at 17 to mix with the Melbourne art scene. She later moved to Sydney where she joined Group 20 filmmakers (started by Phil Noyce, Aggy Read and Albie Thoms) and became one of the founding members of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-operative Cinema. After making several documentaries and independent films, Karena moved to the Byron Shire and exhibited a vast array of art in different mediums, including an exhibition in Paris in conjunction with the Byron Shire Council to promote her book ‘Byron Portfolio’. Also a composer, Karena took a break from exhibiting to write music, a selection of which have been used extensively throughout the world in film and television. Her passion for art in all forms extends to performance and literature, where she has volunteered in the organisation of many festivals and performances throughout the Northern Rivers. Having worked in so many facets of the arts, Karena understood the need for artists to have a voice as well as an outlet to share their creations. She developed Art Canvass in collaboration with her partner, Peter Wynn-Moylan, who was formerly the Regional Arts Development Officer, to share a carefully curated selection of art to entertain Byron locals on a weekly basis. For nearly 20 years this segment has given a media platform for the arts to be celebrated and discovered by enthusiastic listeners. With her passion for music, Karena says that the tunes are carefully selected and are a highlight of the show. “I receive a lot of feedback that people particularly enjoy the music. It’s very different to what you would hear on mainstream radio with a selection of interesting composers and some very raw and talented musicians,” she said.

In 2015, Arts Canvass and Bay FM became the first community radio station in Australia to win an international radio award. A threepart documentary series written and presented by Karena, Memories of Sarajevo, took the Bronze prize in the Documentary - Social Issues category in the New York International Radio Awards. The documentary was co-produced by Bay FM station producer, William Martin, and based on research by Karena, Peter Wynn-Moylan and Deb Sharpe. “This award illustrated just how powerful the reach of community radio can be. We challenge ourselves to create content which both enriches and educates the listener, to leave them wanting more,” Karena said. As an award-winner, Karena now has the prestigious role of being a Grand Jury member of the New York Festivals, with the responsibility of listening to and awarding the world’s best radio station programmes. In addition to the New York Festival award, Memories of Sarajevo also won a Community Broadcasting Association award of Australia for best spoken word documentary, and has been collected by the National Sound Archive of Australia, and was also highly commended by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television in New Delhi, 2015. Tune into Karena and Arts Canvass on Bay FM’s 99.9 FM, every Thursday from 9 a.m. for an enriching adventure of the arts.

A CALL FOR 'COMFY BUMS’

SAVING THE CREATIVE CULTURE OF BYRON

A veritable melting pot for creative minds and artistic souls, the Byron Shire is home to a plethora of expressive people.

We were born with two hands, one to help ourselves and one to help others.

Performance art is no exception. Providing an arena for theatre, events, music, dance, film and more, the Byron Community Centre gives artists a place to perform while also helping those in the community who are most at need. Providing essential assistance for those less fortunate, the Community Centre provides emergency relief, homeless and community breakfasts, a food bank, financial advice and counselling, support groups and a no interest loans scheme. But the organisation which has helped so many, now needs the help of the community to continue its inspirational work. General Manager, Councillor Paul Spooner, is a graduate of economics and sociology who has managed community, cultural, legal and youth organisations. With his background in helping not-for-profit organisations, the Byron Community Centre ticked all of the boxes for him; culture, community and people. A place where things happen and people are given the help they need. Paul shares with us the Community Centre’s call for help for ‘comfy bums’. “The 250 seats and carpets in the Byron Theatre are in urgent need of replacement. The NSW government has provided nearly 50 percent of the cost. Now we need to raise $60,000 to make it happen! “The Byron Theatre provides a platform to support to the arts and other organisations in the Byron Bay community. Many groups, including schools, utilise the theatre and to ensure its future, it is in desperate need of refurbishment,” Paul said. All contributors will receive one year’s membership to the Byron Theatre, and donations upward of $250 will receive a special reward, plus an invitation to a VIP event in the Byron Theatre to celebrate the installation of its new chairs. Donations can be made via the website, byroncentre.com.au. In collaboration with the Writer’s Festival, Byron Community Centre are publishing a book, featuring our local homeless. Called No Fixed Abode, the book shares the stories of these people who have connected with the community centre, averting assumption and breaking the stigma that can make their lives more difficult. Being human is given, but keeping our humanity and helping others is a choice. What will you choose to do today?

Part of helping others is to reach out to offer support during a difficult time, to offer love and support, to show we care. The Encounter Project offers a way for us to lend a hand. Directed by Adam Collett, the Encounter Project is breathing new life into the Kulcha Jam space at Acacia St, in the Arts and Industry Estate, launching the platform for what he hopes will evolve into a worldwide initiative. “We aim to serve the community in a number of uplifting ways, to empower the lives of many people through music, art, food, events and outreach. “It’s a space where people can feel safe, comfortable and inspired. Where they feel the love and support behind everything we do,” he said. Adam grew up locally in Byron Bay and later moved to New York, where he lived for 10 years. With a heart for volunteering, Adam moved home to Byron and joined the crew at Kulcha Jam in 2012. He is passionate about saving the creative and cultural heart of Byron and is using the Encounter Project to channel his experience into a space to help empower others. The Encounter Project is launching a Care Box initiative, to provide love and support for those who need it. “People can go to our website and nominate someone they know who may be going through a tough time. It could be to support someone who is sad and stressed or who just needs to know they are loved. We’re wanting to bridge a gap with a service we feel is missing for those who are emotionally hurting and may not know where to turn to for help or inspiration. “We fill the box with tailor-made items to help that person, whether it be fresh food and meals, or our inspiring art from a collective of creatives to give that person a feeling of support and hope,” Adam said.

To support the Encounter Project or learn how to get involved please visit www.encounterbyron.com or contact adam@encounterbyron.com

epurpose instead of refuse. It is a simple mission, yet one which benefits the Byron Bay community to its heart, providing those in need with a simple staple of life, food.

Founded by Venerable Honu Dawson, Liberation Larder has now been in operation for eight years, rescuing food and fighting hunger. The Larder’s president, Helen Hamilton, began volunteering with her daughter within its first year of operation. They had recently moved to Byron Bay from Sydney and were looking for a way to connect with the community. “Volunteering has always been something close to my heart, and this cause spoke to me in different ways. I don’t like wastage and I believe that people will struggle to get out of a difficult situation if they are hungry. “Liberation Larder’s key function of gathering food, which would otherwise end up as waste, and giving it to those in need, provides a means to improve a situation for people who are hungry and need help.

book is a gift you can open again and again, but while many of us take for granted the simple pleasure of getting lost in the pages, some children are going without. Lilly Somerville Knott, loves nothing more than the enchanting tale of a good book. Becoming immersed in pages and paragraphs is what brings her immense joy, she is also a passionate writer, so when she learnt that some children didn’t have any books of their own, Lilly wanted to help. She started a YouTube channel, called Lilly’s Story Service Official, where she reads stories which she has written herself. Her aim is to grow enough of a following for her stories to raise money, which she will use to purchase books for kids without. Her first story, Mandy the Duck, is both educational and thought-provoking, with issues such as bullying and loving people for what’s inside as a message within the journey.

“A community is stronger when it works together and it is because of the community we exist within that makes our goal achievable. Thank you to those people and the businesses who have given so much already, words cannot express our gratitude,” Helen said.

Keen to get other children involved, Lilly hopes to invite local Indigenous children to share their dream time stories. She is also encouraging any children to write their own stories to send to Lilly, for her to read out on her YouTube channel.

The service is needed now, more than ever. Numbers of people in need are growing.

Lilly has also been invited to write books in collaboration with developmental biologist, Bruce Lipton. His theory is the idea that genes and DNA are influenced by a person’s thoughts, emotions, diet, and other key ‘environmental’ factors. Through Lilly’s stories, Bruce will include the science of epigenetics, in an effort to rewire thinking to promote a healthy childhood. Based on the theory that it’s better to help children than to fix broken adults.

SO HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Individuals can donate their time in the kitchen to prepare food, to deliver meals and food packages, to scout surplus food or to work in one of the farm plots where food is grown. Businesses can donate excess food without liability or contribute via a tax-deductible donation. Organisations can donate staff to host a barbecue lunch, or can hold a morning tea fundraiser at work with baked goods provided by bakers from the Ballina Farmers Market. Save the environment, help your community and feed the hungry. Make new friends and make a difference by helping Liberation Larder today. visit www.liberationlarder.org for more information.

Lilly’s stories will convey this message in a fun and engaging way. Today a reader, tomorrow a leader. Help Lilly to empower children across the world, every book placed in the hands of a child in need is another step closer to giving that child a positive future.

TAHLIA PILEGGI

My game of chance

SULIS LIFESTYLE SALON AND SPA

A flip of a coin, the roll of the dice. Some of the best outcomes in life come as a result of chance.

for one another. It makes a big difference for our clients who can feel the warmth and energy of our interactions,” Tahlia said.

For Tahlia Pileggi, it was the luck of the draw which led to her dream occupation and lifestyle.

The team at Sulis exude confidence, with more than 60 years of experience between them. The hairdressing team; Elaine, Jamilla and Tahlia; have 12, 4 and 10 years respectively while Spa Therapists, Pania and Jade, have 20 and 10 years of industry experience. Sulis’ latest edition is Salon Coordinator, Salome’ who has blended well into the culture of the group.

The owner of a popular Byron Bay hair and beauty salon, Sulis Lifestyle Salon and Spa, Tahlia couldn’t have pictured 12 years ago that she would be a business owner in Byron Bay. Or even a hairdresser for that matter! Born in Kalamunda, east of Perth in Western Australia, Tahlia studied to become a graphic designer. She loved the creativity and had also considered becoming an architect or interior designer, but after completing her studies she found design opportunities scarce. During this period of her life, Tahlia also worked part-time for Woolworths. One quiet day, she was chatting with a co-worker about what she wanted to be. She had always been passionate about all forms creativity not just design, so on the back of a till docket, she wrote down six career possibilities. She ripped them up into little pieces of paper, and drew out one. Hairdresser. One week later, she was an apprentice at a hairdressing salon. “If you ask anyone I work with, they will tell you I’m usually a very methodical and well-organised person, but on occasion I like to leave a little bit up to fate to see where it takes me,” Tahlia said. Tahlia discovered the Aveda brand early in her career and has been a convert since. “Aveda produce beautiful products ethically to care for the world we live in. It follows the principles of Ayurvedic medicine, the Indian healing tradition based on the knowledge of life and the interconnectedness of all things. Not only is Aveda committed to using organic ingredients, but the company is also focused on sustainability as well as providing income to indigenous cultures across the world. It’s a brand which resonates with me as a business owner, knowing that I can help people to look and feel their best while using products which are making a real difference in the world,” she said. Making the move from Western Australia, Tahlia found herself in far north Queensland where she then embarked on an epic road trip. She drove south along the Queensland coast, stopping in places which intrigued her to spend some time, eventually making her way across the border to Byron Bay. She called into the local Aveda salon, Sulis, where her new life began. When Sulis was later put on the market for sale, Tahlia was encouraged by friends and clients to take the plunge into business. Carefully considering her options, Tahlia realised this was the journey she was meant to take and has now owned Sulis for just over one year. “I am most proud about the way our team has moulded to become like family. We are in tune with how each other feels and have a lot of love

Aveda’s philosophy that treating the whole person leads to greater balance and well-being, means the experience at Sulis is one of relaxation for the body and mind. Whether you choose a hair or beauty experience, you will begin with a welcoming ritual, which is a head, neck and shoulder massage using Aveda’s composition oils. The private shampoo room has a romantic candle-lit glow with a reclining massage chair, for complete serenity while receiving a soothing scalp massage. “It’s a very calming and nurturing environment, where people can just relax and feel pampered.” Sulis has recently undergone a transformation in the hairdressing salon, with renovations continuing in the beauty spa. “The changes are reflective of the Aveda brand in that the space is filled with natural light, is crisp and white with a lot of natural earthy tones, wood and plants.” It’s where modern salon blends elements of the natural environment, a bit like Byron itself where the coast meets the bush, where one can feel completely relaxed. “The spa is undergoing an exciting transformation which will reflect Aveda’s Indian practices. I’m very excited, it will look amazing when it’s finished,” Tahlia said. “I’m particularly proud of the spa services we offer, in particular the stress relieving massages and balancing facials. Our therapists have a combined experience of 30 years in this area and I see the guests wearing the benefits to their skin on a daily basis,” she said. Sulis is very dedicated to supporting the local community and is a regular donor for events, not-for-profit organisations schools and clubs throughout the region. After owning the business for only four days, Tahlia was thrown in the deep end for her greatest challenge in business, being the hair salon at Splendour in the Grass. “It was intense! It was the only time in my life I thought I wasn’t going to finish something, but we got there. It was exciting, fun, hard, exhilarating and such a great experience. I’m that kind of person, I’ll jump in the deep end and then figure out how to swim, but it’s challenges like that which make us stronger,” she said. Sulis, Byron Bay’s premier Aveda Lifestyle salon for expert hair and spa services, delivers a rejuvenating and memorable experience.

Wendy Berecr y FOOD STYLIST

That gorgeous, gooey glaze, or a delicious drizzle and drip. It’s no accident you begin to salivate when beautifully presented food captures your eye. Immediately you form an emotional connection with what you crave. But what does it take to make food come to life through the lens? Patience, perseverance and a lot of practice, says Wendy Berecry, a freelance food stylist. “A lot of planning, prepping, and staging goes into any photo in order to make it #foodporn worthy. A precisely styled food image tells a story. It’s more than just a pretty plate, it exudes enjoyment and communicates an emotional connection through the taste and texture you associate with it. I’m lucky I love what I do. It’s not like work for me, it feels like playing,” she said. Wendy moved to Mullumbimby, to escape Sydney city life. She spent 25 years as a food stylist there, including five years with Women’s Weekly, developing recipes and cooking food for the magazine’s recipe pages and cookbooks. “As a food stylist, it’s my job to prepare and cook the food to be photographed, then set up the scene, with the food and props, in front of the camera. Food is photographed for places such as magazines, cookbooks, product advertising, television commercials, take-away menu boards, websites, brochures and food packaging. Each area requires a different style”. “Beautifully shot imagery establishes a brand long before a customer buys the product. The right image can turn heads and make hearts (and tummies) skip a beat,” Wendy said. Starting her day with a quick stroll along Brunswick Heads beach, followed by a latte, Wendy is enjoying the Byron lifestyle. “I love the people, the weather, the beaches and the fun vibe.” When she isn’t reviewing for restaurants or prepping for a photo shoot, Wendy’s passion for food extends to volunteering to feed those less fortunate. She volunteers with Liberation Larder in Byron Bay, on Mondays, and the Soup Kitchen in Mullumbimby, on Wednesdays. “Liberation Larder receives donations of food from local businesses, and a chef comes in to devise a menu from what has been received. The food is turned into several hundred meals per week for those who need them, and any leftovers are frozen and given to the community centre in Brunswick Heads. “The Soup Kitchen in Mullumbimby works a little differently, where a small team of volunteers will cook food at home and bring it into the kitchen to serve. Food means so much to me, I’m grateful to be able to do what I love while also channeling the passion in a different way to help those less fortunate,” Wendy said. 16 www.byronlifemag.com

isillusioned with school and keen to get out into the ‘real world’ to do something that mattered, an ironic twist of fate started Ben Funnell’s career at The Australian National University in Canberra. What began as a casual contract led to 15 years with ANU, a journey which completely changed his perspective on the value of education. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and with more than 20 years of tertiary education experience, has been welcomed to SAE Byron Bay as Campus Manager. With a rich melting pot of creative people within the local community, Ben says that SAE Byron Bay is the best place to unlock creative potential. “In many ways, our campus mirrors what people love about the area; idyllic surroundings and a strong sense of community. There are so many talented, creative and passionate people who choose to study here. “We offer our students internship opportunities through sponsorship of the many local organisations and festivals in the area,” he said. As Campus Manager, Ben is driven by the success of his students, whether that be academically or personally. “I think everyone wants to make a difference in the world somehow, for me it’s about creating an encouraging learning environment, where it’s ok to make mistakes, and that students have all the support and expertise they need around them to help them along the way to achieve their goals.

“Having worked in education over a long period of time, I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great people. One such person was my manager at The Australian College of Applied Psychology, Andrew Little, who sadly passed away last year after a battle with leukaemia. The mark of a great teacher is that you are still learning from them long after they’re gone. In the case of Andrew’s impact on my life, that is certainly true.” Pushing the limits of what’s achievable is something Ben strives to do outside of his career also. He has taken himself out of his comfort zone by completing a 100km trail run through the Blue Mountains, a 48-hour team adventure race on the mid-north coast and last year he completed his first Ironman triathlon in Busselton, Western Australia. “For someone who had never swum more than 100m before, and never in open water, the 3.8km swim leg of the Ironman was really daunting. My first group start in open water training, I panicked and nearly gave up at the 200m mark. Thankfully I was able to break through that barrier when advice came to mind; slow down, breathe, you’ve got this,” he said. However, Ben’s greatest challenge yet is closer to home, as a father of two boys. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t difficult at times juggling everything, but I believe it’s important to somehow carve out some time for yourself, so when you’re with your family you can be fully present and have a calm energy about you.” Find out for yourself why SAE Institute is the world’s leading provider in creative media education and unlock your creative potential.

Su Reynolds BYRON BAY FIRST NATIONAL

very home has a story worth telling and advantages worth selling. Like a good book, the exterior may influence your decision to take a look inside, but it’s the heart within that determines its value.

As one of the state’s top sales agents, Su Reynolds, Director of Byron Bay First National, understands how to match the unique advantages of each home with the right buyer. This has resulted in approximately 90 percent of her listings being generated from previous clients and referrals, a testimonial to both her character and work ethos. Su’s fascination with property came from a young age. “I remember eating ice cream with my parents while looking in real estate windows, fascinated by different homes. It was a regular outing. I went straight from school into the real estate industry. “The founder of Byron Bay First National, Margaret Robertson, was my mentor. With her guidance, I saw the lack of women represented in real estate as a challenge and set out to deliver services differently. 18 www.byronlifemag.com

“25 years on, I have discovered, as a woman in business, it is important to know who you are and to be completely aware of what you have to offer. Focus on continually growing, both in your career and personally. Do something regularly that is outside of your comfort zone,” Su said. As a Director of Byron Bay First National, Su has been instrumental in positioning the company as the leading agency in the Byron Shire. She shares the story of how she juggled parenthood with business. “I became a director 14 years ago having already worked with the First National team for 11 years. At the time, I was pregnant with my son, Tom. He arrived eight weeks early. It was like a circus, with solicitors and bank managers coming to the hospital to have contracts signed. I even interviewed new staff members in our hospital room!” When it comes to business, Su expresses how important product knowledge is, as well as delivering a strong customer focus and giving back to the local community. “Our team ethos is that we look after our clients and their properties as if they were our own. It is our job to know and understand the product we are selling but what is more important is doing the best by the people who own and live in these buildings. Over many years we have supported the Byron community where possible by donating to local charities and organisations.” Buying or selling, discover why Su’s clients are her biggest advocates. ome is where the heart is, and for fourth generation Byron local, Katie Elliott, this especially rings true. Not only did the local lifestyle lure her home after years living abroad, she also fell in love.

What makes this fairytale more special, is the fact that she fell in love with a Brazilian, Luiz. Not during the years she spent living in Brazil, but back home when she returned to Byron Bay. Her heart had been here all along. For the past decade, Katie has been living a fascinating life of travel, visiting and working in exotic locations across the globe. She’s backpacked the world, trekked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, worked on Superyachts in Spain and lived in both Morocco and Brazil. “After my first solo trip through Brazil in 2011, I fell in love with the country, culture and language. I went on to do an exchange semester in Brasilia in 2013, and now speak fluent Portuguese,” she said. She then completed her Bachelor’s Degree in International Business before moving to Morocco in 2015, to intern and work with Moroccan event company, Boutique Souk. “Specialising in luxury bespoke weddings, whatever clients could dream, Boutique Souk brought to life. Opulence, class, attention to detail, music; the destination weddings lasted for days, filled with romance against incredible sunsets, armfuls of atlas roses, and camels at the dry desert weddings.” “Clients had up to six parties over their wedding week, with bespoke itineraries designed to take them across the country with dedicated drivers, guides, experiences and more. Anything was possible and everything was delivered,” Katie said. When the time was right, Katie brought her wealth of event knowledge home to Byron Bay and established her own bespoke event company, Wild Goat Events. “No matter how far I travelled, home called. I absolutely love this town. I am so passionate about my home, it’s a dream come true to have started my own business here and I can’t wait to start a family and bring my children up, just as I was, in this little piece of paradise.”

Pairing good food with great wines is one of the many talents you’ll discover when you meet Julian (Julz) Recsei. As Manager of the Sun Bottle Shop, Julz can take you on an adventure of aperitifs. The Sun Bistro is less than three years old with a reputation for its family-friendly bistro, creative food and the extensive choice on offer in the Drive-Thru Bottle Shop. Julz has been with the Sun for 15 months, bringing more than 18 years of industry experience. With a fond love of travel and adventure, Julz took up the daunting challenge of riding a bicycle through the Himalayas. “Mostly I rode down the mountains and pushed the bike back up the other side,” he laughed. He loves to call Byron Bay home, an area with an atmosphere unlike any other. “I’m drawn to the outdoors, this beautiful region with beaches, rainforest, mountains, waterfalls and rivers; it reminds me of why Byron is Byron.” Julz also has a love of music, and knows that Byron is one of the best places in the world to be forever entertained by a plethora of musicians. “From the Blues and Roots Festival to Splendour in the Grass and Falls; the music scene is incredible. You can walk into most bars on any night and catch a live act, or even just take a stroll along Johnson Street and find a melody from one of the many buskers. I love that there is always a tune playing somewhere.” From organic wines to a large selection of specialty spirits, Julz can recommend the best drop to wet your whistle, no matter your taste.

Heather and Aaron’s mission was to create exciting vegan food, full of flavour which could be enjoyed by everyone. They were thrilled to have Sebastian Goldhorn join the team as Head Chef, to refine their ideas and create a delicious menu.

f you’ve shied away from vegan food because of a misconception that it won’t taste good, then you have been sorely misled!

At The Beet Vegan Restaurant, Not only do the meals eliminate animal products, they also provide a culinary journey for lovers of great food. Some of the substitutes for animal products even surpass the originals in terms of flavour and nutritional benefits. So if it tastes great and is good for you, what are you waiting for?

“The dishes are created to make vegan food accessible, interesting and appealing to everyone, by showcasing a large range of foods full of taste and texture. Menu items are 100% vegan and ethical, yet consist of both healthy and indulgent items.”

Heather Myers and Aaron Bilbija founded The Beet out of a love for a vegan lifestyle.

Burgers and burritos, fettuccini and even a ‘Philly Cheese Steak’ are only a few of the cleverly constructed meals on The Beet’s menu.

“I was first introduced to a vegetarian lifestyle when I met Aaron, who has been vegetarian for 20 years and vegan for 10.

A family-owned business, Heather and Aaron juggle the restaurant with family life, with three young boys to raise, Jesse (3), Brody (1) and little baby Liam, only 8 weeks old.

“It’s taken me years to transition to a 100% vegan diet, I was reluctant to give up meat and dairy as I enjoyed the taste. After my first son was born, I read ‘Eating Animals’ by Johnathan Safran Foer. This was a game changer for me. It challenged me to think about how I would explain to my son why we eat animals and why I ate meat when his Dad didn’t. I realised my reason, ‘I like the taste’ was pretty lame and selfish. This sparked a passion for plant-based cooking as I wanted to recreate my favourite dishes without animal products and also find new things that I could enjoy just as

“It’s hard to achieve a good balance between work and family life when you are running any business, especially when you’re new and starting from the ground up! We are lucky to have family here to support us and a great team at The Beet, so we are able make time each week to spend time together as a family,” Heather said. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or just love good food, The Beet will leave you feeling great on the inside so you can shine outside.

rom the colourful souks of Marrakech, where the air is filled with exotic spice, and wandering minstrels, magicians and snakecharmers vie for attention; to the sun-drenched Greek Islands where a summer breeze brings with it the inviting scent of grilled lamb and garlic. A trip to Byron’s Mez Club instantly conjures memories of a Mediterranean getaway, with its funky architecture and authentic cuisine From the inspired couple who brought Miss Margarita Mexican Cantina to Byron Bay, Emma and Greg Thomson created The Mez Club from a love of the Mediterranean. Their popular Miss Margarita now sells more Espolon margaritas than any other venue in Australia, and already within a year, The Mez Club has become a mecca for those seeking mouthwatering mezze from Morocco and Greece. Its cocktails are sublime, curated with the same passion for taste and colour as the food. A must-try is the signature Turkish Princess, created using locally-made Turkish delight liquor. We catch up with Emma to learn about The Mez and what their secret to success has been.

Emma what is your secret to making restaurants work in Byron Bay? No secret! We are just genuinely obsessed with delighting our customers and will keep fine tuning until it is just right. Feedback is gold so listen to it, however grating it might be at the time.

What have you learnt since opening The Mez Club back in September last year? So much!! It was a brand new concept so we knew it would be a challenge. However, after many tweaks the menu is now settled and works on all levels. I feel like we have our strongest crew ever right now, delivering exceptional service to ensure our guests leave feeling happy.

What is your plan for The Mez Club’s first winter? A stunning fireplace for downstairs is arriving soon which is very exciting and pretty unique in Byron. The atmosphere it will bring will be intimate and cosy. We are introducing some hearty new main courses and comfortable seating. Warm and welcoming will be the theme, where guests can relax in sublime surroundings.

Which locals do you find are loving The Mez Club? We want to make everyone smile but it seems the lovely ladies of Byron especially appreciate our style, grazing plates and pretty cocktails! Mezze share plates accompanied by a specialty drink makes for a unique place to get together for after-work drinks. Customers are also loving The Souk space upstairs for their pre-wedding functions and birthday parties.

Where is your favourite place in town? Morning coffee at Leaf & Grain and quick meals at Bangalow Bowlo work for us but its morning surf time with the kids at The Pass or Cooks’ that makes our Byron Life so special.

he label is known worldwide for its gypsy-inspired creations that nod to eras gone by, and it’s story began with two sisters, Isabella and Elizabeth, who made things together as children in a house filled with artistic creativity. The label began when Isabella (whose childhood nickname was Spell) started selling her hand-made jewellery at Byron Bay’s local artisan markets. Before too long Elizabeth had an epiphany that she needed to be in Byron Bay with her sister, so left her Bondi Beach home and career as a film editor to become Spell’s business partner. From there the label has expanded into fashion, accessories and homewares, so women with that inner-bohemian spirit can have a

The best worst wedding I have ever done... SUSIE FIGGIS

Marriage Celebrant

M

ore than a few things went wrong in the lead up to Sophie and Jordy’s ceremony. I’m not kidding, nearly every hick-up that could happen, did.

It was the weekend of Cyclone Debbie and tears were shed when a third of the guests, including the best man and bridesmaid, were unable to make it to the wedding as they were stranded at airports, or cut off by flooded roads.

There weren’t many dry eyes in that paddock, hearts were melting and wonderful memories were being created. It was one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever been involved in.

The bad weather had set in, but Sophie and Jordy had a clear vision of where they would have their ceremony, which was in the back paddock of their own property in the hills of Byron. They had lovingly built an earthy Arbour and created a wonderful space for their ceremony. As 3pm hurtled closer, it was still raining. The men kept checking their weather apps, searching for a break in the rain.

Leading up to this moment, over a cup of coffee and then a glass of wine, we had connected, celebrant to couple, where I learned about their love story, and all the reasons why they were getting married. With their stories and my experience, we crafted a ceremony that was a true representation of their love and their vision for life together… and for an awesome touch, their Kelpie delivered their rings on cue!

The final call was to stick with Plan A. There was a last minute flurry of action … uncovering hay bales, making the love heart flower mandala, gearing up the musicians and ushering people into the paddock (with their umbrellas).

Jordy and Sophie’s wedding is a wonderful example of how a meaningful and authentic ceremony is the heartbeat of the occasion. It’s the magic that people remember.

Sophie had been whisked away for a few pre ceremony photos in her dads restored 1966 Rambler. The next challenge hit when, on their way back the car broke down! Twenty minutes later they got it going again, but our rain free window had been missed. Then Sophie stepped out of the car in all her beauty, to have her big brown kelpie bound up to her for a muddy cuddle, white dress now streaked brown. Taking it all in her stride, Sophie walked into that ceremony space toward her husband-to-be and nothing else mattered. Their favourite song was played by their friends who were musicians, the rain came down and there was an intense sense of love and reverence in the air.

All the additions, like snazzy bridal parties, stunning gowns, cars, flowers and amazing arbours, add to the magic, but the ceremony itself is the place to script the dream and really celebrate the love. On a happy note, the bridesmaid and best man did eventually get there by hiring a helicopter to carry them over the closed highway. Everyone was thrilled.

heck out photographers work on their websites and decide if that is the “look” you want for your wedding photographs. Do the packages suit you? Do you want an album straight off? Have you got the time and talent to make your own album? Most photographers should be good editors of their work. You are trusting them to take the record of your day so why not ask them to supply a shot list of say 50-75 of the “best” images of the day. These should be finished finals that are available soon after the wedding for social media and also as high-resolution files suitable for prints, canvases etc.

3 I

t’s crucial to meet the photographer before the big day. If they offer a free prewedding shoot, take it up and don’t feel you have to go with that photographer. Take advantage of every offer available. It’s a competitive market and you need to be allowed the time to decide who “feels” right for you and your partner on the big day. Trust your heart on that decision. No photographer should ever feel in any way insulted that he/she has not been chosen.

4 M

ake sure you decide to enjoy the whole process of your wedding planning. If you feel overwhelmed ask your mother, father or friends for help. This is the first day of the rest of your life you are planning so make sure its not a burden or a chore.

Wild, free and a bit feisty Backdropped by ruggedly wild coastline, sapphire blue water and stretches of golden sandy beaches, Byron Bay’s iconic lighthouse provides a picture perfect destination for those seeking the sublime.

F

or this reason, it made sense for Wild Goat Events founder, Katie Elliott, to base her range of signature events at this spectacular location.

Katie’s background in International Business and bespoke wedding planning in exotic locations brings a blend of international intricacy to every event. Given that she is also a Byron Bay local, she knows the secret gems hidden throughout the Byron Coast to make each event luxuriously unique. Working in conjunction with the Cape Byron Lighthouse Café and NSW National Parks, Wild Goat Events are perfectly positioned to offer one-of-a-kind events at the lighthouse’s breathtaking location. With Byron Bay being the first place in Australia to see the light of day, Wild Goat Events curate intimate sunrise events at the Cape Byron Lighthouse. This signature experience is one of the most sought-after event locations in Australia, ideal for that picture-perfect proposal or to toast the sun on a group picnic breakfast. Katie said, “Wild Goat Events is passionate about creating intimate, luxurious events in stunning locations. We love curating experiences that are highly tailored to deliver opulent delight, in relaxed and intimate settings, whether it be up at the lighthouse, down on a beach or at a private residence. For this reason, we focus on proposals, elopements, vow renewals, as well as spoiling guests with our pre and post wedding experiences in and around the Byron Shire, for unique celebrations to be forever cherished.” The secret to providing a bespoke event is to offer the best service. “Our small team of professionals have extensive backgrounds in luxury events around the globe. We work with our clients one-on-one to tailor each experience exclusively, ensuring it encapsulates their individual charm and personality. Our eye for detail is unsurpassed, ensuring elegant settings to provide a photographer’s dream.” Cape Byron provided the inspiration for Katie’s business name, celebrating something uniquely Byron while paying homage to the history of the local area. “Years ago, Cape Byron played host to a herd of wild goats, who were spotted on the headland after being introduced by a lighthouse keeper back in the early 1900s. Their constant presence was beloved by the Byron locals, who took it somewhat personally when the goats were removed from the Cape’s fragile cliff face in 2006. But one legend, the elusive Wategoat, remained alone until 2013. “Wild, free, and a bit feisty, the Cape Byron wild goat is our namesake for being everything a good event should be.”

Byron’s appeal goes beyond the endless coastline to the laidback hinterland hidden beyond the hills. Contact Wild Goat Events for a celebration which extends beyond the realm of the ordinary. 34 www.byronlifemag.com

The French Petal SO THE QUESTION HAS BEEN POPPED, AND YOU’VE SAID YES! NOW THE EXCITEMENT BEGINS

Not only do flowers provide a pop of colour, texture and a gorgeous scent, they symbolise life and growth. Flowers will set the tone for your wedding, and with the popularity of floral headpieces, they feature in the photography more than ever. With a wealth of experience and a passion for pretty petals, Estelle is the flower fairy behind the beautiful blooms of The French Petal. Growing up in the south of France, there were always a lot of flowers for Estelle to play with. She would plant flowers in her grandmother’s veggie patch and bit by bit the flowers would take over. This is where her passion for botanicals blossomed. She learnt floristry in Paris and then travelled abroad to become inspired by different styles and cultures to nurture her love of flowers. She was attracted to Byron Bay because of the creativity and nature. “It’s like a little hive, buzzing with creative people. It’s a great place to grow, play and get inspired,” she said. Her French influences on her bouquets and garlands produces a unique style, perfectly suited to weddings and events. She enjoys the challenge of creating something unique injecting form, texture and tone into her chic creations. Being a bespoke specialty wedding florist, Estelle has provided fronds and flowers for celebrity brides, but is discreet on the details, preferring to keep the secrets of the couples private and intimate.

WHAT IS ON-TREND AT THE MOMENT? “The life of a florist is immersed in the seasons, winter brings some rich tones of plum with all of the berries available, deep cherry orange with the liquid amber, and maple hues. Pampas grass has been a big thing lately and the magnificent chocolate or mocha phalaenopsis orchids that are all over Instagram.”

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE TIP FOR BRIDES AND GROOMS IN CHOOSING THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS? “If a bride and groom have little experience in flowers in general, I would say just to relax and play with ideas, collect images to get inspired and then start talking with your florist. Your florist will discuss what’s in season on your wedding day, work on a colour palette, design and style to tailor something special.” For inspiration and advice, visit thefrenchpetal.com to view Estelle’s gallery of gorgeous floral arrangements.

Hair Artist : Tahlia Make Up Artist : Jade MODEL : Talia Styled by : Spell and the Gypsy Collective We had the privilege of working with Talia who has recently been going through a difficult time after her daughter was diagnosed with Childhood Interstitial Lung Disease. She has been spending days and nights in the emergency ward and the least we could do was treat her to new hair, make-up and some much deserved pampering. We had such a fun time with Talia and she looked absolutely beautiful at the end of the make-over.

AFTER

BEFORE

38 www.byronlife.com.au

STEP 1: Colouring The first step in our Aveda colouring process was to put a mood board together for Talia so she could visualise the look we were wanting to create. One of our key objectives was to finish with a look that was low maintenance yet still maintained its beauty as it was growing out. Initially we filled Talia’s blonde hair, which is a very important step when making colour darker. Following this, we very gently re-lightened the hair around her hairline and did some free hand balayage through the back. While this was processing we took the base colour one shade darker than her natural tone. The final look is so soft and natural, allowing Talia to still feel blonde without the massive upkeep.

STEP 2: Cutting & Syling In order to create an uplifting and full look we had to remove the length by cutting off the pony tail (this was fun!). Talia now has what we call a LongBob, sometimes referred to as a ‘Lob’. We kept the baseline blunt, giving the look of fuller and thicker hair. A combination of texturing techniques helped us create a playful beachy look which has completely lifted Talia’s face.

STEP 3: Aveda Make Up It’s all about the eyes!! Jade prepared Talia’s skin with the Aveda Hydrating Lotion before applying Sweet Tea Tinted Moisturiser, Honey Dual Foundation to set followed by Peach Light Accent for the cheeks. To achieve Talia’s smokey eyes Jade used Lemon Spice Eye Colour as a base and Copper Haze Eye Trio followed by Cocoa Eye Definer and Black Forest Moscara. To finish the look off Jade used Blushed Honey Lip Colour and Mango Juice Lip Glaze.

STEP 4: Styled by Talia was gifted the Blue Skies Wrap Mini by the team at Spell and the Gypsy Collective.

Tracey Livingstone

We sent our Editor Nik Torti to try a Colonic Cleanse for the first time! Let him tell you all about it...

I

have always been very interested in the human body, nutrition and I suppose in general all round well-being. So when I was given the opportunity last month to try a colon hydrotherapy treatment for the first time ever it led me to think, why have I not done this yet? So I figured what’s the worst that could happen? Well for starters, a mixed bag of emotions and thoughts crossed my mind, shortly followed by the confronting issue and realisation of a tube being placed in my rear end. So It is safe to say, yes I was slightly apprehensive at first and would not exactly compare my feelings to that of someone who has just won the lotto. Secondly and most importantly I wanted to know that whoever this person is that will be placing this tube in my rear end is the nicest and most well rounded human being I have ever met. It is a funny thing the gut, not only is it the new kid on the block in the world of discussions relating to good health it is also very well known that good digestion is another great sign of good health. But the gut is also overly renown as being a very important and intuitive tool that some of us consciously and unconsciously use when meeting people for the first time. Never has this been truer than when I first met Tracey. Almost instantly from just being in her presence my mind was put at ease. And the more time I spent with Tracey the more I liked her. She made the whole process from start to finish seamless and made me realise how silly I was to have had any of those apprehensions. From Tracey’s lovely character to her attitude, knowledge and passion for health encompassed that of a very trustworthy and safe-zone environment. The overall feeling from my experience of the treatment is one that words may possibly put people off their lunch whilst reading this article. Generally speaking, any talk relating to digestion is usually not the most desired topic of conversation. But when it is a quintessential part of good health and further more a pivotal sign of good health, it seems to me that the stigma attached to ‘digestive talk’ is incredibly unworthy and potentially a negligence to the overall mission for good health within our society. Because let’s be honest, good health looks to be the leading cause for happier and healthier people living more fulfilled lives!!!

he Medicine Wheel, in Byron Bay, is one of the town’s most established and iconic healing centres. It boasts a team of dedicated, professional practitioners who offer a range of holistic and esoteric services ranging from reiki, massage, kinesiology and osteopathy to tarot reading, astrology and many different types of healing. If you’re not sure which treatment would suit you best, or you would simply like some more information before you make your decision, then make sure you call in. The friendly team offer a wealth of knowledge with experts in every modality and are happy to guide you towards the best healing experience. Byron Life Magazine caught up with Byron Medicine Wheel Manager, Joy, to learn more about Kahuna Bodywork which is a way of life as well as a massage style.

Joy explained that Kahuna Bodywork is a deeply relaxing therapeutic style massage that helps reinstall physical and emotional balance, facilitating healing on many levels and promoting lymphatic flow and the movement of energy within the body. A Kahuna Bodywork uses Ki energy and is characterised by long flowing strokes over the body. This relaxes the body and, at the same time, sets the cells into motion. The practitioner uses their own bodyweight to work on a deeper level and create new patterns within the body. This allows clients to regain balance and awareness and provides space for them to experience healing and wellbeing for themselves. The skill of Kahuna Bodywork can take years to learn. Joy studied at the Australian College of Kahuna Sciences, which is based in Mullumbimby and is the only school in Australia that offers a Certificate IV in Kahuna Bodywork. She learnt from the best, with mentor and owner of Byron Medicine Wheel, Ki’a’i Ho’okahi Weber who studied directly with Kahu Abraham Kawaii, the creator of this modality, for 16 years to become a Master of Kahuna Bodywork. “Kahuna Bodywork works on many different levels,” says Joy, “the physical, emotional and energetic. It is an excellent way of relieving

physical pain in the body, stiffness or illness. Also, if you are dealing with change or a stressful situation, or simply feeling stuck in life.” If you haven’t tried Kahuna Bodywork yet, call in and see the team, they will be happy to offer you a blissful healing experience that will keep you coming back for more!

rdinarily, the thought of family and fighting conjures up memories of big brother’s pulling pony tales, but for Sarah Fisher and Kane Sullivan, encouraging their children to fight has reaped unexpected rewards. “We took the kids to a holiday camp held by Extreme Mixed Martial Arts for something fun and different for them to try. As I sat on the sidelines and watched, I was blown away by the passion and professionalism shown by the coaches and how much the kids enjoyed the classes. “I then watched some of the adult classes and realised that Martial Arts wasn’t as intimidating as I had imagined, it actually looked pretty fun. Kane was also keen to give it a try, so as a family we have been learning Muay Thai for around eight months,” Sarah said. The three main components of training at Extreme Mixed Martial Arts are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, striking and strength training. Striking consists of Muay Thai, Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts, this is the training Sarah, Kane and their children, Maya and Darcy enjoy. “The kids train three times a week and Kane and I head along when we can. What we love is that our adult classes are usually just before or after the kid’s classes, so we can watch them train and then they can watch us or hang around on the mats tumbling, doing their homework or socialising with other children. “Both kids weren’t sporty prior to MMA and were actually pretty shy. Kane and Sarah have been impressed with Maya and Darcy’s progression. “Honestly they were pretty dismal skippers when they first started,” Sarah laughed. “But now they are excellent skippers, their hand-eye coordination has improved and because Muay Thai is founded on respect and discipline, they are much better listeners and have a lot of respect for their coach,” she said. ffortless and enchanting, watching local surfer chick, Josie Prendergast, glide across the water is mesmerising. Whether she is in her familiar cross-legged stance or precariously balancing on the nose of her longboard, she transforms the sport into an elegant dance. The teenager is in her final year of school, but has already landed surf modelling gigs with Volcom and Billabong. Josie’s dad grew up in Sydney and made his way up the coast to Burleigh and Byron to surf. He travelled through Asia in search of waves but ended up falling in love. Josie was born on a Filipino island, Siargao. With its crystal clear water and white sandy beaches, it’s known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. Her family moved to Australia when Josie was four, to Byron Bay. She has fond memories of growing up in Byron. “I remember spending most of my days at the beach with Mum, Dad and my two brothers, Mike and Bernie. Dad would always walk to Suffolk and Broken with us, and bring his board. Us kids eventually started surfing with his help. Summers were long days on the beach, surfing and eating hot chips,” Josie said. Josie’s board sponsor is McTavish, you can watch a series of beautifully shot videos online featuring McTavish boards, called Dedicated to the Craft, where Josie features on Episode Five and her brother Bernie features on Episode Three. Despite making it look supremely effortless, Josie spends hours daily perfecting her stance and technique on the water.

WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT SURFING?

“It brings pure joy and is a lot of fun. It’s difficult to describe but whenever I’m in the water, I feel incredibly content.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SURF IN BYRON?

“It would have to be the Pass. I do love surfing at Wategos and Broken but I love the Pass because of its long, soft waves. I’ve met some of the most incredible people there too.”

WHAT DO YOU GET UP TO WHEN YOU’RE NOT SURFING?

“Spending time with people, being able to hang out with those I love is great. I like to read too. I am really passionate about food. I love dark chocolate and a good burger, when I’m visiting my second home in the Philippines I love noodles and curry.”

HOW DO YOU STAY IN SUCH GREAT SHAPE?

“Mainly from surfing! I do a few other things here and there, but the majority of my exercise comes from being on the water a lot.”

MeetCameron

Neil

For every surfer, the first wave is unforgettable.

L

ocal surfing legend and President of the Byron Bay Boardriders, Neil Cameron, shares with Byron Life Magazine the first moment he was hooked with the waves. “The first time I saw someone surfing was in Yamba. I remember thinking ‘Wow, look at that!’ My Dad bought my first board, a Malibu. Paddling out into the ocean for the first time, I still remember that feeling. I love it, still love it today and because of that I surf every day of the year. “I have such a passion for it, it’s been a life-long love and that want to be on the waves has never died inside,” he said. Neil grew up in Brisbane and started surfing when he was 14. He would have to travel to Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast on the weekends to catch waves, relying on lifts from his Dad. When he couldn’t get to the beach, he would take his board to the river and wait for one of the big ships to pass by, to try and ride the wake. He left school to do a bricklaying apprenticeship, moving to Caloundra and then Byron Bay, where some of his friends had told him about the great surfing lifestyle. He went into business for himself as a bricky, met the other love of his life, his wife Janice, and together they had two beautiful children, Bryce and Alyse. Neil and Janice work together at LJ Hooker, Neil has been in the real estate industry for 15 years, 10 with LJ Hooker in sales. He joined the Boardriders club, at the time it was called the Seahorse, before later becoming Byron Bay Boardriders. He could connect with other keen surfers who shared a common bond. After seeing how much the club had grown in recent years, Neil was happy to become President of the club, with the aim of steering it in a positive direction, not only for the surfers but also the community in general. “A big aim is to ensure the club remains financial, as events like the BK Classic cost upward of $15,000 to run. We also need to accommodate the needs of up and coming surfers by providing training for them. “We are a club that cares about people, surfers or not. We help those who are doing it a bit rough and don’t seek recognition or praise for it, if we are in a position to help we can, and that’s a great feeling for everyone in the club,” he said.

Although he never went pro, and never rated himself at that level, Neil has an impressive list of achievements on the water to his name, including both Queensland and New South Wales state surf titles and Australian titles. Martial Arts is how Neil has kept fit off the waves and would religiously train each morning. “It’s been a great way to keep my body in check all these years, but also it has taught me discipline and how to apply principals of life into every day, not just for my own benefit but for the benefit of my community and the people around me.”

ith plenty of passion and an infectious zest for life, grommet surfer, Touma Cameron, is talent to keep an eye on.

“I have had to learn not to get frustrated with myself when I have a bad surf,” he said.

The keen surfer was first introduced to a board around the age of five, but really started getting into it when he was seven. His father, Peter, is a keen surfer and helped Touma and Touma’s younger brother, Marki, ride the waves.

With the support of his family and local board riders, the ocean’s the limit for Touma, one of the Bay’s rising surf stars.

“My Dad taught me how to surf and gives me tips on how to get better. I wasn’t really a natural, like I didn’t just stand up. I had to work at it and it’s taken years to get better,” Touma said. The 12-year-old has a refreshing view on life and is wise beyond his years. Unlike a lot of kids who are content watching television, Touma doesn’t really have a favourite show because he never really watches it. He’s usually outside. And when it comes to asking him who his surfing hero is, his answer was delightfully mature. “I like to watch a lot of surfing because I love to learn off others to get better, but I don’t really have a hero because I just want to get better than what I am, not be like someone else.” Touma surfs around 10 times per week, mainly after school and as often as he can. He also enjoys playing basketball with a group of friends and skate boarding. His greatest achievement on the water so far was coming second at the school regional titles in the under 16 age group. While he would love to be a pro surfer, his outlook on life is optimistic and realistic. “If possible I’d love to be pro surfer. But, just travelling to spots like Mexico with perfect uncrowded points would be so good. This year Marki and I surfed in New Zealand and in September we are going to Japan to surf some river mouths my dad keeps talking about. Pro surfing is a tough sport to break into, so if I couldn’t compete I’d like to be an architect and design houses. But, I’ll still be surfing.”

The power of design KINCADE WILKS - CASE 22 BYRON BAY

A

concept which started as a summer pop-up venture is evolving into a go-to destination for mid-century modern European and American furniture.

Case 22 Design is a specialist importer of exquisite furniture, about to launch in Byron Bay. Owned by Aaron Treloar, the company started five years ago in Wollongong, out of a love of collecting vintage furniture. Long-time friend, Kincade Wilks, developed an appreciation of designer furniture from working with Aaron who styled a home Kincade had recently renovated “Aaron has helped me style a number of homes here in Byron Bay, including my first home which I had renovated. I started to understand how good interior design can really change the way you use a space and help improve the way you live. “With a mid-century style in mind we worked together until the place was completed. “That property sold without even going to market and in fact the person who bought it liked everything that we had used so much, she took the place fully furnished. From then I was hooked. I started reading about different designers and styles and began sourcing and buying some items to restore for myself.” Since then, Kincade partnered with Aaron and discovered that Byron Bay was a perfect location to sell designer furniture locally, so locals 50 www.byronlife.com.au

wouldn’t need to travel to Sydney in search of key additions to their home. Case 22 Design specialise in sourcing original classic chairs, sofas, dining chairs and tables, daybeds, lights, art as well as office chairs, desks and tables for commercial spaces. In addition to this, Aaron and Kincade also restore furniture, remaining as true as possible to the original. “We source correct materials from Denmark which we use for finishing and protecting the timber. For more complicated or technical restorations we partner with Alby Johnston, from Bayspoke Studio, as we can rely on his work to achieve the highest levels of workmanship. We also re-cover a lot of items due to their age. For this we source the best fabrics and materials from overseas and work together with Greg Marfutenko from Top Notch Upholstery, who has years of experience working with this era of furniture, especially Danish. This local support assists in getting the desired finish we require,” Kincade said. Rarity and exclusivity, is a distinct advantage of sourcing items through Case 22 Design. Many of their items can’t be found in other parts of Australia. Kincade commented, another benefit of sourcing originals is that it removes much of the disposable nature of today’s society. “Everything we collect is something that I would have in my home, it is something I believe in. People can come to us and purchase knowing that what they buy is real, that it is well made and will last.”

DEAN owner of

TILES ON BYRON WHAT DO PEOPLE NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING NEW TILES? When it comes to outdoor tiles you generally want something that has a non-slip surface as it will be exposed to rain, frost and morning dew. Also, try not to go too dark with your colours as in direct sunlight they can become quite hot and often show dirt, dust and pet hair. Natural stone is another option and often a timeless look. Just remember to seal the stone after install. You can be a bit limited when choosing a tile for wet area space like a bathroom. It’s best to look at the size of your floor area in your bathroom/ laundry and where the floor waste (drain) is located. Remember that your tiler will need to bed the floor with sand and cement before tiles are laid to make sure if water lands on the floor it will run away down the drain successfully. It is best to select a smaller tile for this reason. Any tile that is larger than 600x600mm you should look at changing your floor waste to a liner drain and relocating to run adjacent with a nominated wall in your bathroom. With other indoor areas, let your imagination run wild with sizes, shapes and colours the limits are endless!

WHAT IS HOT RIGHT NOW AND WHAT COLOURS ARE IN TREND? For indoor tiles earthy tones are popular, so is the concrete look. Timber tiles are a great way of creating a timber effect without the maintenance and upkeep of real timber. Encostic are always popular in the bathroom with so many colours and patterns to choose from. As for wall tiling the herringbone pattern is on trend at the moment along with subway tiles which appear to never go out of fashion, creating a timeless look.

WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT PERSON TO LAY YOUR TILES, WHAT SHOULD YOU ASK AND HOW DO YOU PICK THE PERFECT TILER? Referals from past clients and word of mouth are a good place to start. Also, ask for photos of previous jobs and always get the price. Lastly, remember the classic saying: “A busy tiler is a good tiler”

The Market is still very strong and stock is very low, all of which means those who are choosing this moment to sell their home are often being rewarded with record prices. At the higher end of the market young buyers from Sydney and Melbourne who envision moving into our communities in a few years’ time are taking equity from their homes, often in buoyant inner city locations, and investing in Bangalow, Possum Creek, Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads and renting their properties until they are eventually ready to move north. People are optimistic and excited about being part of our passionate and relaxed communities. The internet enquiry remains strong and open for inspection numbers are also healthy. There has never been a better time to sell than right now.

Common sense tips for property investment:

1 2 3 4 5 6

Principa

l (First N

Buy a property that you could live in yourself – if you couldn’t live in it tenants will feel the same way.

A sense of community and a strong cultural life, are vital in attracting people to a town. Invest in areas with a strong cultural life.

Land. In years to come backyards will become increasingly valuable – people will be happier to live in smaller spaces - so small studios built in backyards to rent out will be more and more common. When investing, look for property with space ‘down the backyard’.

Always use ‘the real rental’ figure not the summer rental figure when calculating repayments on an investment property.

Look at capital gain as the icing on the cake when you’re buying an investment property.

Always focus on paying off debt. Set up your investment loans to pay fortnightly and at more than the required minimum mortgage amount.

yron Bay

There are good real estate agents and ordinary real estate agents. There are also good accountants and ordinary accountants. Ask around and find a good property accountant before you invest. Ask him or her if they are into property themselves?

Lenders will suggest you borrow money under interest only finance terms for investment properties. I suggest you borrow money on the basis of principal and interest. Why? Because P and I mean that no matter what you are reducing debt every fortnight even if the market flattens out.

Visit as many ‘open for inspections’ as possible before you buy an investment property and spend lots of time in the sold galleries in the real estate websites.

Finally, and most importantly, follow your gut. Investing in property is as much about common sense and gut feeling as it is about data and research. Also ask good agents why a property is a good investment and collect investment historical case studies from different communities as these are invaluable in helping you know what community to park your hard-earned money in. www.byronlifemag.com 53

f you are only going to grow one thing this winter, make it kale. Kale is a nutritional powerhouse. It has virtually no fat, and is very high in fibre. It is packed with powerful antioxidants, as well as having plenty of vitamins C, A, K and B6. It’s a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and manganese. So it aids digestion, is antiinflammatory, helps to fight against the formation of cancerous cells, supports the immune and cardio-vascular systems, helps to lower cholesterol, and does many other things to help to keep you healthy. And, best of all, it’s easy to grow, and delicious to eat. There are several varieties, so try a couple of different ones. Kale is more tender and has a sweeter flavour when grown during the cooler weather. Seedlings planted now will be productive until December, if you give them a little TLC. You’ll need a sunny or semi-shaded position, soil rich in organic matter, and adequate watering. Because you can pick kale leaf by leaf, it’s a good, quick crop. Good companion plants for kale and other members of the cabbage family are dill, bush beans, celery, onions, spinach, marigold, nasturtium and strongly scented herbs such as peppermint and oregano. Probably the most widely planted companion for brassicas, though, is white alyssum. It helps to deter the white cabbage moth which will lay eggs that will hatch into leaf-chewing caterpillars. Inspect your plants every few days, so the problem doesn’t get out of hand. I often see the little black or green balls of droppings, before I see the caterpillar itself. There are a few safe organic control methods if you do find the caterpillars are feeding on your plants. If there aren’t too many, you can pick them off. You can also use insect exclusion netting to protect your plants. If you need to spray, you could use Dipel, a natural bio-insecticide that affects only caterpillars, or a neem oil product.

MAREE CURRAN Owner

MAKE YOUR OWN KALE CHIPS! Recipe: Wash some kale leaves, remove the central stem, and cut them into pieces. Dry them gently but thoroughly. Toss them in a little olive, sprinkle with sea salt and lay the pieces in a single layer on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Then bake for 10-20 minutes or until done. Make sure they don’t burn. You can add other flavourings too – sesame seeds, herbs, chilli powder – whatever takes your fancy.

What to plant now

• Daffodils • Jonquils • Freesias • Pansies • Violas • Snapdragons • Primulas • Lavender • Daisies • Camellias • Daisies • Citrus Trees • Avocados • Olives • Finger Limes • Potatoes • Asparagus • Broccoli • Cabbage • Peas • Snowpeas

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I’ve seen “Phantom of the Opera” 17 times in multiple countries. Mick was born in Melbourne and arrived in Byron Bay 25 years ago. Subsequently, he has split his time between the two places and loves experiencing the best of both worlds. In his early twenties Mick lived in Cyprus which he describes as an incredible experience where he learned all about baklava and heartbreak. He is now a proud batchelor, a single man with no kids but three God children he loves dearly. Mick admits taking on the role of managing the Byron Visitor Centre has been a big challenging but a very rewarding one. He sees the Visitor Centre as such an important community asset and loves helping the thousands of people that enter its doors every week. Together with his dedicated posse of passionate volunteers he has really enjoyed getting to know the many different facets of the community they are involved with. “Byron Bay is such an interesting and dynamic place,” Says Mick, “over the years I have watched it change so much, yet the heart is still there.” In his increasingly diminishing spare time Mick enjoys jumping behind the mic with Danny Salfield on The Sandpit on Bay FM on Thursday afternoons. As his housemates would attest, Micks happy place is singing. In his opinion, the greatest invention in the history of the world is Karaoke. Mick is known as the go-to wedding singer in his circle of friends and he has even entered the odd singing competition. A creative man to the core, Mick is a voracious reader and enjoys writing short stories. He is also passionate about animal welfare, social justice, and good comedy. Ultimately, however, it is travelling that truly grabs his heart. “Settling into a plane seat before take off is one of my favourite moments in life,” He says with a grin. That and being surrounded by the amazing natural world he enjoys at his doorstep on his regular morning runs to the Byron Bay Lighthouse.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I once entered a marbles competition even though I had never played before and won. I even got a trophy. Originally from Lismore, Leigh’s fairy tale life started as a young surfer and has now, blossomed into a blissfully happy family life with a growing business venture at the newly renovated Ocean Shores Tavern. In the early days as a teenage surfer, Leigh desperately wanted to find a way to indulge his passion for surfing and earn some money. He found this opportunity when he was appointed manager of a surf shop in Lismore. He went on from there to the Gold Coast where he became 2IC at a Pacific Fair surf store. Fate, however, led him back to the Shire and a new life of ‘coffee beans and bouncing babies’. This all took place because Leigh’s parents had recently purchased a café at Southern Cross University and he worked alongside them in their business venture. It was during this time that Leigh had a near death experience in a motorbike accident. Recovering from this incident gave him a quiet opportunity to reflect on his life. During this time, he made an accidental discovery; he was a talented Barista and had a passion for making delicious coffee! This catapulted him into his next job, which was an amazing opportunity at Ocean Shores Tavern, 4 years ago. Leigh and his beautiful wife, Kim, now live in Byron Bay with their two lovely children, a girl, Harper, who is two and a half years old and Casta, who is just seven months. As you can imagine, the pair must have their hands full! These days Leigh is extremely busy acquiring the skills needed to run a successful pub plus supporting his young family. When he has a precious moment off, Leigh enjoys photography (check out his Facebook page Anthraxforbreakfast), heading down the highway on his speedy Buell motorbike and singing in the rock ‘n’ roll band called ‘Hammers’. Thanks for sharing Leigh! Sounds like you lead a very full and satisfying life.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? My real name is Olivier! Meet Noli who was born in the picturesque high-altitude location of the French Alps in France. Noli grew up snowboarding and after university decided to leave home and start travelling the world. It was 2003 when Noli first arrived in Byron Bay by train. He fell in love with the laid back culture and felt at home with the local creative scene. As many people do, he went back and forth between Australia and France a few times before deciding to give a new life in the Northern Rivers a go. Noli wanted to escape the grind and follow his passion creating film and knew the Byron Shire would be the stimulating environment he needed to shine. He had experience working in the camera department of a multimedia and journalism school, experience which led him into producing videos for festivals over the last six years. His career in film has expanded over the years and he now works on projects Australia wide, carving a name for himself on a national scale and collaborating with a community of local artists and businesses. This experience has led him to spread his wings even further and he is planning his first independent film production with a friend writer, by entering an international film competition in 2018. Parallel to this, in 2016, Noli and his partner, Bryony started “The Work Pod”: a Co-Working Space dedicated to creative people of all industries. Noli says: “I feel that most of the issues future generations will face are not technological but cultural or linked to behavioural changes & evolution of perceptions, which only art and creative thinking can address.” Their aim is to provide an inspiring space for people to harness their passion and cultivate connections to re-imagine the world.

“That’s a tricky one as there are a number of things I would want to see changed.

“Take life back to basics! Make people, people again

I guess an important one at the moment is to change people’s views on their voice and voting. There is a stigma that our voice and votes don’t mean anything. At a time where there is political uncertainty, it is important now then ever to make your voice and vote heard and counted.

How many times have you been for dinner and watch a Family communicate via mobile phones, sometimes directly to each other. Humanity should always prevail to the use of technology and computers, not be reliant upon them and only used in moderation.

“Such a loaded question….first of all I feel this world and life is a gift in itself we should be protecting. I could go down the route of global warming, but if I could only change one thing?

Look at the U.S and UK and then obviously here in Australia. Together we can turn politician’s stances on issues. They eventually listen if all raised concerns were the majority, like in France. From local issues to global, such as the Adani Group and Carmichael mine, what’s in our food and how we can change our diets, immigration reform, the exploitation of Aboriginal people and rights, and climate change. I could go on, but my point is that we should all raise our voices to be heard. ‘Stronger together.’”

Modern forms of communication have changed dramatically, a face-to-face conversation is commonly, less favorable, now-a-days.

I would ask for equality. No poverty, no hunger, clean drinking water for all, no one fleeing their country seeking refuge, no divisions due to race, religion or sexuality. If we were all equal there would hopefully be no greed, people in power or war. Then maybe we could come together and treat out planet, our only home with the respect it deserves.”

Even the way we drive vehicles, it’s believed that common forms of human transport will be entailed remotely or effortlessly within the next 5 years. If drones can be flown via mobile devices it’s only predictable that automotive transports next.”

z z u b e e f f o c What do you love most about being a barista?

Have you ever offered a free coffee and why?

I love the human interactions and the connections I make with people from all shades of life. I love that with a simple cup of coffee and a few kind words you can turn someone's day around and bring a smile back on their face. If you come for a coffee you might as well stay for a chat!

Yes everyday at least 5 times a day. Thanks to the generosity of our customers, we are able to offer free coffees and other hot drinks for people in need. This concept is called Pay it Forward. We simply have a 'tip' jar on the front counter and people can pay a drink forward for someone doing it tough right now. That's why we like to say that we make "coffee with love".

What do you believe is the secret of a perfect coffee? The secret to making the perfect coffee is love of course. Love for the product you use, love for the drinks you make and love for the people you serve. As long as you put your heart into what you re doing, you can't go wrong.

What is the funniest moment you have experienced as a barista? There are so many funny moments and many hilarious conversations flowing throughout the day between all the colourful Byron Bay characters that come to the box. It would be hard to pick one! There is always lots of fun to be had!

What's the best pick up line to use on a barista? "Can I buy you a coffee?"

What's the nicest thing a customer has said to you and the worst? The nicest thing would be " you have made my day" or "Thank you for making me feel special". The worst "can I please have a decaf soy milk cappuccino extra hot extra shot with lots of froth no chocolate sprinkles 1 and a half sugar and 3/4 full in a takeaway cup no lid and can I pick it up in 30 min when I finish my shopping?"

Amazing flavours. Unique blends. We’ve been roasting Organic, Fair Trade, Australian and Sustainably Grown coffees in Byron since 2005. Visit our roastery to taste our coffee, buy beans and more.

Owner and chef, David Prowse, moved to Byron Bay 16 years ago with his partner, Renee. The couple packed up their old Kingswood and headed north for an adventure and change of pace. They have been cooking, managing or accounting for local restaurants from Lennox to Bangalow ever since.

Dave was a chef for three years at Lennox’s 7 Mile Restaurant, where owners, Tracy and Marcel, shared a wealth of knowledge with him. He was then head chef at Olivo before embarking on travel throughout Australia. He came back to Byron in 2010 to join the Targa team when it initially opened, and later purchased the restaurant with Renee in 2014. With modern European influences, Targa features dishes reminiscent of Spanish, Italian and French cuisine. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as light snacks throughout the afternoon. To cure a caffeine craving, Genovese coffee is served all day, every day. With sublime food and attentive service, Targa is becoming the location of choice for intimate functions. Champagne breakfasts, pre-wedding dinners and cocktail parties, Targa’s effortless indoor outdoor flow sets the scene for great food, wine and music to complete a milestone event.

What inspired you to become a chef? “I worked in bakeries and restaurants while at school and was drawn to the creativity and characters you meet in kitchens. After travelling extensively through Europe and South America, then working in England, I was further inspired by peasant-style, rustic regional cookery, appreciating the history, culture and beauty of simple food cooked to compliment the seasonable availability.”

What would you recommend from the menu? “Definitely the gnocchi, it’s a dish we are wellknown for. If we can take someone back to a special place they remember on a European trip from a single dish, we know we are doing something right.” Potato Gnocchi – House made, pan-fried, hazelnut brown butter, asparagus, sage.

What is a cooking secret you can share with our readers? Don’t be afraid of a little butter now and then.

THE TARGA FLORIO WAS AN OPEN ROAD ENDURANCE AUTOMOBILE RACE HELD IN THE MOUNTAINS OF SICILY NEAR PALERMO, ITALY. Homage to Targa Florio can be found embedded amongst the walls of the restaurant. 2 www.byronlife.com.au
