WELCOME TO NORTH QUEENSLAND

THE HEART OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

A

wash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities and more than 300 annual sunshine hours, Queensland, known as the sunshine state, is truly where Australia shines. With an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres, Queensland is the second largest state in Australia and is five times larger than the United Kingdom! It’s easy to see why the vast inland savannah and endless ribbon of coastline provides visitors with experiences like no other on earth and why it’s not difficult to find your own quiet piece of paradise. Stretching more than 2,300km, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet,

the only one big enough to be seen from outer space. It extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters, giving it a vast and complex natural ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and iconic Heart Reef.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770 when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship. For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts. Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled in-between these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above rainforest canopy.

The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palmfringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA North Queensland is home to some quirky ‘world’s largest’ items. The world’s largest moth, the Hercules Moth, is found in Northern Queensland with a wingspan of up to 25 centimetres. Lake Echen is home to King fern trees which have the world’s largest fern fronds, up to seven metres long. Inland, Undara National Park has some of the world’s longest and largest lava tube systems. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be 165 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Queensland is a land of possibility. Gaze upon a star, make a wish and fulfil your dreams during your time in the sunshine state. It’s your time to shine!

Wombats Cute, cuddly and native to Australia, the wombat is a timid marsupial not often seen in its natural habitat. In the wild, wombats are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the evening. But this isn’t the only reason they are rarely seen. Stout and muscular, wombats are born to dig. The talented tunnelers carve intricate burrows underground, ranging in length anywhere from three metres to 30, and can have multiple burrows. The main burrows are sometimes shared between wombats with one using each burrow at a time, with a sleeping chamber housing a nest made of grass and leaves. They have the distinction of being the world’s largest burrowing animal. For these reasons, wombats weren’t noticed by European settlers for at least 10 years after their arrival to Australia. A wombat can travel up to three kilometres during an evening in search of food, but will have other burrows near in case of danger. Shorter burrows are commonly used by wombats as escape tunnels when predators are nearby. DID YOU KNOW? The rump of a wombat is covered by a tough, thick skin. If threatened by a dingo, a wombat will dive into a nearby burrow, using its rump as protection from the teeth of the dingo. The wombat is also capable of crushing the dingo’s skull against the burrow roof. There are three species of wombat: the Common wombat or Bare-nosed wombat; the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat and the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat. DID YOU KNOW? Queensland’s only wombat, the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat, is critically endangered and one of Australia’s rarest marsupials. The species is only found in one location in the wild, the Epping Forest National Park, west of Clermont in Central Queensland. A 20km predator fence protects these wombats against dingoes.

Billabong Sanctuary

Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m.

At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. Wildlife and interpretive experiences feature all day. Don ‘t miss one of the mosr popular feeding shows, where giant crocodiles will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength eager to take the food offered to them. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as crocodiles are fed by our experienced rangers.

Billabong Sanctuary has on display, the Bare-nosed wombat and the Southern Hairy0nosed wombat. Two of the Billabong’s most loved animals are wombats Rueben and Wanda who come out twice a day for a pat and cuddle. Visitors have the opportunity to hold a wombat for a souvenir photo.

Snappy Tom, at 4 metres, is an impressive crocodile, while Bully, the largest crocodile at the Sanctuary is 4.5 metres long and weighs in excess of 750kgs. The most famous of the crocodiles at the Sanctuary is Jupiter caught on Townsville’s main beach The Strand in February 206. Jupiter is 4.3 metres long and weighs 500 kgs.

Due to their rarity, and the fact they are extremely hard to find in the wild, many visitors come to Billabong Sanctuary specifically to hold a wombat, as they are often a favourite out of all the marsupials.

At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals.

Wombats are marsupials because they carry their young in pouches the same way that kangaroos and koalas do. DID YOU KNOW? The female wombat’s pouch opens backward to prevent dirt entering while she is burrowing. Cute and cuddly, the wombat’s nearest relative is the koala. The koala and the wombat are Australia’s two most endearing animals, and at Billabong Sanctuary, visitors have the opportunity to hold and cuddle both. Feed a croc, cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary

To see the crocodiles in action is an unforgettable nature experience.

See a different side to this magnificent animal, the dingo. The Sanctuary’s 3 dingoes are walked around the grounds daily between 11:30 and 12:30 where you can meet them and give them a pat or pose for a photo with a dingo following the dingo talk at 2:45pm Billabong Sanctuary is involved in captive breeding programmes for the endangered Southern cassowary and the threatened Greater bilby. You can view both of these species in displays that mimic their natural habitat Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Koala’s Playground Magnetic Island’s Best Budget Option, Bungalow Bay Koala Village YHA and Koala Park

IS CUDDLING A KOALA HIGH UP ON YOUR AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE BUCKET-LIST? It’s little wonder, these cute and iconic marsupials are one of the most popular animals on the planet, but completely unique to Australia. It often surprises visitors to learn, that there are only three states in Australia where you are allowed to cuddle a koala; Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. So make the most of your Queensland adventure by placing Bungalow Bay Koala Village on Magnetic Island at the top of your must-do destination list. Renowned for popular animal experiences, Bungalow Bay Koala Village is the ONLY resort in Australia that has its own onsite wildlife park. Not only can you cuddle a koala, but the wildlife park provides ample opportunity for many handson wildlife experiences; including holding a big python (snake), holding a baby saltwater crocodile, holding big lizards, turtles and even feeding large parrots from your own lips. Koality Fact: Koalas have two thumbs on each hand for gripping when holding food and climbing – and for holding on tight when you are getting a koala cuddle!

CONQUER YOUR FEAR Snakes, crocodiles and lizards. They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea! However, the more you know about animals that scare you, the more you can put your fears to rest. Bungalow Bay Koala Park is the ideal place to face your fear and do it anyway. There are three daily wildlife presentations, where in-house guests, day visitors and island residents have the opportunity to learn all about the unique Aussie animals of Magnetic Island, through an interpretative and hands-on approach. The tour with knowledgeable rangers lasts approximately two hours and is within the wildlife park. Drape a python over your shoulders and feel the unique scales of a native snake as it moves in your hands. Hold a juvenile crocodile and touch its prehistoric skin and get up-close-and-personal with a cheeky tropical parrot as you feed it seeds from your hand – or lips! All animal experiences within the koala village are free of charge, (included in your entry fee); excluding cuddling a koala, which incurs a fee and includes a souvenir photograph. SLEEP ON THE REEF

Bungalow Bay is home to North Queensland’s newest baby koala, Cody. A baby koala is called a ‘Joey’ and already Cody the Joey has been interacting with other resident koalas and visitors at the boutique koala park. Cody was born in Townsville at Billabong Sanctuary and was recently relocated to Bungalow Bay to boost the resident koala population.

The Great Barrier Reef is a dream destination for people from all over the world. And understandably so. The expansive reef system is home to a diverse kaleidoscope of underwater colour and wonder. Located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Magnetic Island’s golden beaches, coral reef, diverse wildlife and accommodation choices to suit any budget make this tropical island so enticing.

Koality fact: Despite commonly being called ‘koala bears’ they aren’t a bear! Koalas are a marsupial. 200 years ago, European settlers had never seen a marsupial and did not know about pouched animals, like the kangaroo. The bear was the closet mammal the koala looked like.

Bungalow Bay Koala Village has a range of accommodation to suit every traveller; from camping sites to A-frame double and twin bungalows. Each bungalow provides you with a balcony, access to shared bathroom facilities,

ip on Limoncello and savour succulent fresh seafood while watching a sublime sunset transform bright azure water into a shade of vivid tangerine. You don’t need to escape to the Italian coastline to experience the delights of Sorrento; similar sensations can be enjoyed right here in Airlie Beach, at Sorrento Restaurant and Bar. Conveniently located on the boardwalk, a short five minute stroll from Airlie Beach, Sorrento Restaurant overlooks the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands. Its prime location at the heart of Coral Sea Marina Resort offers guests a supreme waterfront dining destination. The popular restaurant has been an Airlie institution for years, and with a recent change in ownership, the eatery has undergone its own rejuvenation. The upstairs dining area and bar has had a tropical revamp, offering an elegant and contemporary setting to enjoy the food, wine and phenomenal view. The fresh beach-inspired décor offers a completely different feel to the casual and expansive downstairs deck.

LET’S EAT – Food Review While fan favourite’s have remained on the menu, a few additions have been made to optimise what’s on offer. A large range of cocktails, beer wine and spirits compliment the expansive menu to complete the dining experience. Fresh, seasonal produce is always utilised from the region’s best suppliers, with seasonal specials offering diversity throughout the year. A favourite dish to order is the Gamberi. This sublime gamberi alla busara takes the finest flavours of this Venetian classic; succulent seared prawns and scallops with a creamy tomato-based rose’ sauce, Sorrento’s famous hand-made pasta, accompanied by a rocket salad and toasted ciabatta. It’s like Summer on a plate! The creamy carbonara is made the traditional Italian way, with white wine and egg, another indulgent classic to die for. NEW ON THE MENU – A range of flavourful and filling items have been added to increase the popularity of the already impressive menu. The Wild Mushroom and Asparagus Risotto has been an immediate hit, bursting with fresh

flavour. The Sorrento Burger is a casual classic for when you just feel like a great burger, while the herb-crusted chicken has also become a fast favourite. The supreme new addition would have to be the Eye Fillet Steak. Cooked to perfection, if you are wanting a melt-in-yourmouth moment, then this is the next meal you should try. If you love an ocean feast, you can’t go past Sorrento’s famous Seafood Platter. This heavenly tasting plate can be ordered for one or two people, so even if you are dining alone, or with a group of friends, there is always the opportunity to savour the fresh taste of the Whitsundays. Indulge in natural oysters, fresh prawns, seared scallops, mussels in chilli Napoli sauce, calamari, bugs and toasted bread. What else is Sorrento Restaurant and Bar famous for? It’s home-made pizza of course! Using traditional Italian preparation methods and fresh local produce, it’s the best of both worlds baked to perfection. Try the Chilli and Garlic Prawn pizza. Garlic and pesto base, prawns, salami, parmesan cheese, chilli and cherry tomatoes topped with rocket leaves, herb olive oil and aioli.

magine an island-hopping adventure where you call the shots. Where you can escape the crowds and snorkel stunning reefs in seclusion, where you can wander the wondrous white sand of Whitehaven before the tour groups arrive, where you can watch a sunset on the water before retreating to a luxurious beachfront resort. Now imagine that all of this is a possibility without costing the earth. The Whitsundays provides an endless playground for discovery, both on land and sea. Combine this natural playground with the relaxation of sipping poolside cocktails at a secluded island resort and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable holiday. Tripping Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Rebecca Douthwaite, shares her local knowledge to help you tailor the tropical escape of your dreams. “I wanted the freedom which came with hiring a boat, but without having to overnight on the water. An option which was affordable yet luxurious, gave us the ability to plan our days and one which suited a family of all ages,” she said.

“We decided to hire a boat through Airlie Boat Hire, who have options which are powerful enough to easily reach the islands, large enough to comfortably fit our group of seven yet compact enough to moor near the beach to reach shore easily. It was also affordable as we wanted a three day option where many bareboat hire options are a minimum of five days,” she said.

families settled in for their first night in paradise with beachfront cabins.

The Airlie Boat Hire team met Rebecca’s family group at Coral Sea Marina/ Resort to assist with the launch from the boat ramp. It took only 45 minutes to reach Long Island where the Palm Bay Resort team met them upon arrival to assist with transporting luggage and food from the boat to the resort.

“The facilities are fantastic and newly renovated. You can swim in the pool by day, cook poolside barbecues, enjoy a freshly prepared meal from the on-site restaurant, curl up with a book by the fire at night and look up at the stars. There is also a great range of cocktails and other drinks to purchase from the bar,” Rebecca said.

Having a boat completely to themselves meant they were able to explore the Whitsundays on their own terms.

For lovers of exploration, there’s nothing like the freedom of creating your own itinerary so you can do more of what you love. Whether that’s fishing, snorkelling, diving or exploring an uninhabited island, the world can be your oyster!

“We spent the first day visiting Whitehaven Beach and then went to Chalkies (Stockyard) Beach on Haslewood Island for a picnic. We all swam, snorkeled and played cricket on the beach, it was a perfect start to the vacation,” Rebecca said. Upon arriving back at Palm Bay Resort, the two

“You can’t beat the experience, waking up to the sound of the waves, watching the sunset from your own deck overlooking the bay, sipping on cocktails and watching the kids fish from the beach.

kimming across a remote pristine bay in a custom-built jet boat with the invigorating salty sea air rushing past, we see a thatch roof appear from the tropical undergrowth of an untouched paradise location. As we draw closer the full expanse of this paradise begins to open out in front of us. Palm-fringed sprawling green lawns, a white sandy beach, Balinese-style villas and a central building with spacious outdoor living areas. It is hard to believe this will be our home for the night. It feels like we have arrived at a luxury spa retreat and we behave like children discovering a new wonderland, excited to explore the fun and adventure that awaits. Greeted by our hosts we induge in gourmet share platters on the verandah before settling into our living quarters. Guests can choose between dorm-style accommodation, twin-sharing or luxury private villas upon booking. Keeping with the remote, adventurous spirit of the location everyone can enjoy an open-air bath or shower under the moonlight. We are also free to wonder the grounds which boasts a plethora of activities for all to enjoy. Plunge into the cool waters of the large resort-style swimming-pool bordered with balanise pillars and stone-carved statues. Take a soak in the heated spa pool, enjoy a game of tennis, table-tennis or pool. Swing on a hammock by the waterfront, explore the bay on a kayak or a paddle board and at night sit around the fire-pit and share stories. In the evening your hosts cook a delicious dinner which is shared around a large central table where new friends are made and laughter is always easy to find. THE TOUR The one day one night tour departs from Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach early in the afternoon. Jet over to the Whitsunday Islands in the high-speed comfort of a custom-built catamaran. Discover hidden bays and jump straight from the boat (or hitch a ride to shore on the small boat if you prefer) with your snorkel gear to explore the magical underwater world that awaits. Colourful reef fish, delicate coral gardens and, if you are lucky, a majestic sea turtle may swim by!

Return to the resort late afternoon and depart for Whitehaven Beach the following morning. Once again, on the custom-built high-speed catamaran we reach our destination in no time. Our hosts escort us from Tongue Bay, along a tropical rainforest bush track and up to the famous Hill Inlet lookout. Here we can stand on timber lookouts and see the spectacular swirling sands and endless turquoise ocean of Whitehaven Beach. The view is even better than a postcard! Next, we head down to the beach and feel the fine 98% silica sand between our toes, as soft as fresh snow but not as cold! Our guides take us to a small, untouched bay bordered by giant sandstone boulders and away from the crowds where we bathe in the sea. The perfect way to complete our unforgettable trip to paradise. As we return to the marina, civilisation and reality it feels like we have spent the last 24 hours in another world. Perhaps we have.

Australia boasts some of the world’s most incredible creatures, many of which cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. Many people visit North Queensland for the opportunity to see nature and meet some of these infamous animals up close. One of the best places to experience this kind of unique wildlife encounter is at Bredl’s Wild Farm which is set amongst 175 acres of scenic bushland in the Mackay/Whitsunday countryside. Here, you can cuddle a koala, feed a kangaroo, pat a wombat, hold a baby crocodile and wrangle a reptile. Watch the trained professionals feed enormous crocodile’s and learn more about Australian native wildlife from a local family with a lifetime of knowledge.

32

It was amazing to get so close to all the animals and it was all included in the entry price. Another aspect I liked was that it was a fully guided tour with only a small amount of guests. The main guide and all the rest of the staff were very knowledgeable. WHAT ACTIVITIES WERE INCLUDED IN THE TOUR? We started with a meeting with Cassowaries, then the handling and feeding of all the other animals followed by a tour around the crocodile enclosures and finally feeding turtles and handling baby crocs. We also got close to the large crocodile’s from the safety and comfort of the safari truck.

We spoke to Margaret who was visiting with her family from the UK.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE TOUR?

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO TO BREDL’S?

The interaction with the animals and the variety of different animals you get to see.

We heard it was a wildlife park with a difference so were interested to find out more. Plus, we were looking forward to seeing the big crocodiles.

WHO WOULD LIKE THIS TOUR?

WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR UNIQUE?

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND?

We had a lot of interaction with the wildlife. From feeding kangaroos to handling snakes and other reptiles, cuddling koalas and stroking a wombat.

Everyone interested in seeing wildlife up close.

Yes, we would happily recommend it, and would go again.

SUNSET TOURS

A TRUE AUSSIE EXPERIENCE Join the Bredl family for a truly magical evening on their new Sunset Tour. Experience wildlife encounters and interaction then enjoy a BBQ dinner and refreshments whilst relaxing by the fire on the lake's edge, watching the stunning sun set. The sunset tours are by bus only from Airlie Beach or Mackay. For more information go to bredlswildfarm.com

Whitsunday Jetski Tours Airlie Beach

EXPLORING THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS ON YOUR VERY OWN JETSKI IS AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED! The multi award winning, Whitsunday Jetski Tours, offers exciting adventure tours from Coral Sea Marina Resort in Airlie Beach where guests can ride the latest model Sea-Doo jetski into the beautiful world heritage Whitsunday Island Marine Park. No license is required and no experience necessary. We talk with 18-year-old Fern Martin from the UK who experienced a jetski tour for the first time while on holiday with her family. Why did you choose to go on a jetski tour? I have always wanted to try it out. I had never been able to have the opportunity until I visited Airlie Beach. I did this tour on my last day and it was the best way to end my holiday. Is it safe for anyone to have a go? The whole tour was very organised and safety conscious. We started off in a briefing room where we were shown the different hand signals we needed to perform throughout the tour and also how far apart we needed to be from each other.

They talked us through all possible scenarios, so we knew what to do in an unexpected situation. This made me feel confident about the tour and my abilities.

to the mainland when we saw dolphins jumping close-by!

What is included?

I think almost everyone would enjoy this tour and would be capable of driving a jetski. As long as the individual can cope with going fast and likes the adventure, they would love this experience.

They provide everything including life jackets, sunglasses, wetsuits and even sunscreen. Not only this, but they provided bottles of water and half way through the tour, the tour guide gave us all a snack! What was it like driving the jetski? It was the most amazing experience! I felt very comfortable and confident being in control of the jetski, due to the preparation beforehand. It was even better than what I expected. What was your tour guide like? Our guide was amazing! She was so friendly and made the experience even better. We felt very comfortable with her and were able to have a laugh. She encouraged everyone to have a go at driving, in order to help us have the best experience we possibly could. What was your favourite part of the tour? All of it was amazing but if I had to choose one moment it would have to be on the way back

Who would enjoy this tour?

Would you recommend this tour to a friend? I would 100% recommend this tour to a friend! I don’t think you would be able to get a better experience anywhere else! FOUR TOURS OPERATE DAILY: • The Airlie Adventure, also known as the ‘Turtle Tour’ with sea turtles often encountered • The Two Island Safari, exploring the waterways of South Molle and Daydream Islands • The Jetski to Paradise, a jetski adventure visiting exclusive Paradise Cove Resort • The Ultimate Island Trek, an epic jetski journey to the island oasis of Palm Bay Resort. 2017 Gold Major Tour and Transport Operators

ARE YOU READY FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE? Ocean Rafting offers a selection of high-speed, life-changing tours around the Whitsunday Islands, combining the very best of iconic experiences. Within the space of seven magical hours you’ll find yourself immersed in an underwater wonderland, snorkelling pristine coral surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Then, set foot on the purest white silica sand in the world on Whitehaven Beach before embarking on a guided bush walk through a national park to arrive at the panoramic lookout of Hill Inlet. Three bucket-list worthy adventures packed into one excursion. Can you handle this much fun? What tours are available? Ocean Rafting provide two main tours, tailored to your preference of snorkelling or spending more time on Whitehaven Beach. Northern Exposure takes you on an exhilarating ride to the northern islands of the Whitsundays for two epic sessions of snorkelling around secret locations surrounding Hook Island. Catch a glimpse of Hayman Island as you glide past to see where

the rich and famous hang out in the Whitsundays before arriving at your first snorkel destination. After two snorkelling sites, your high-speed boat zooms toward world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch on the white sand of Hill Inlet at the Northen end of Whitehaven Beach before embarking on your bush walk to the iconic Hill Inlet lookout, to see the silica swirls among the turquoise and aqua water.

ride that resembles an adrenalin-inspired jet boat adventure for added fun. They are the fastest day-trip boats in the Whitsundays meaning you’ll have more time snorkelling and on the beach by reaching your destinations faster!

The second tour option is Southern Lights, where you visit one snorkelling destination and then enjoy two hours relaxing at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. You then get to experience the northern end by Hill Inlet before bush-walking to the Hill Inlet Lookout.

The buffet lunch can be included for a small additional cost; but the spread of seafood, meat, fruit, bread and salads is certainly worth it! After snorkelling, the bar officially opens; beer, cider, water and soft drinks can be purchased throughout the journey. If you don’t have an underwater camera, no worries! The guides will take photos of your group throughout the day and images can be purchased online a couple of days after your tour.

What is included in the tour?

What were the best parts of the tour?

Other than life-changing experiences and a whole heap of fun, both tours include expert guides who fill you full of information about the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef along the journey.

The biggest highlight of the tour for me was when our boat cruised up Hill Inlet to deliver us to a special beach within Hill Inlet at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. Ocean Rafting are the only commercial operator in the world to have access to this exclusive area, so this was an exciting first for me.

Ocean Rafting’s semi-rigid inflatable vessels are super-fast, making the ride itself part of the adventure. Twist and turn across the waves for a

DID YOU KNOW?

The movie ‘Australia’ starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman was filmed in Bowen.

Beautiful Bowen

B

owen is the northern jewel in the Whitsundays glistening crown. It is a charming coastal town with award winning palm fringed beaches, beautiful bays and a warm tropical climate. Situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays on the shores of Edgecumbe Bay, 45 minutes’ drive north of Airlie Beach, this picturesque seaside town is a relaxed beachcomber’s paradise. Bowen offers accommodation ranging from backpackers and caravan parks, to 4-star absolute beachfront apartments. When heading north to Bowen, one of your first stops should be the Big Mango located along the Bruce Highway just before you enter the town centre. The Big Mango is home to the Bowen Visitor Information Centre, a knowledgeable, friendly place to book all your Bowen accommodation and activities and an excellent source of information if you are planning to continue your journey. Make sure to try out the local mango sorbet and snap a selfie with the Big Mango.

With some of the best fringing reefs on the Queensland coast lying just a few metres offshore, the area attracts snorkellers and divers keen to explore the colourful coral gardens. Bowen is one of the few places in Queensland you can walk straight off the beach and snorkel fringing reefs just meters from the sandy shores. You will be amazed by the abundance of marine life just waiting to be discovered. While snorkelling Horseshoe Bay, you can check out the newly installed intertidal sculpture called ‘Bywa’. This sculpture stands 3.2 metres high and 1.8 metres wide and is constructed from concrete and stainless steel.

Bowen Historical Museum is rated as one of the best museums in Queensland. The rich history including the Aboriginal past and industrial growth is recorded here. Memorabilia and rare artefacts including shipwreck relics paint quite a story of the adventures of the town and its people.

Climb to the top of Flagstaff Hill for panoramic 360-degree views across the surrounding bays, follow the famous mural trail through this historic Queensland town, and visit the various locations used in the blockbuster Baz Luhrmann film 'Australia'.

On the 18 January 2020 – Bowen will come alive for the Rodeo by the Reef which is part of the Whitsundays Clipper Race Carnival festivities. This is the second time for this event where the seaside meets countryside at this rodeo event for the entire family.

The region is also known for its abundant fruit and vegetables. Nicknamed the ‘salad bowl of the north’, Bowen and the surrounding districts produce mangoes, tomatoes, corn, capsicum, melons, beans, pumpkin and limes. There is also a plentiful supply of wild-caught seafood, available fresh every day off the boats as they come into the marina.

La Tabella – Where Quality Matters “We raised the bar for service and food and will continue to provide the best dining experience Airlie Beach has to offer for years to come”

I

t’s well known that Italians are deeply versed in the gioie della tavola, or “the joys of the table.” At La Tabella, the delight of the Italian long lunch or communal dinner is celebrated in the heart of Airlie Beach. Owner, Leni Fries, had a vision to bring a superior level of service and high-quality cuisine to Airlie Beach. Her vision is honoured as La Tabella celebrates its seventh birthday and a reputation for raising the bar. Experience the elegance for yourself. Nonna’s long table can seat up to 20 people, inviting friends and family to revel in ravioli with a festive glass of Prosecco in hand. The seafood tasting platter is a popular lunch

option. Al Fresco dining is available with one of the best beachfront positions in Airlie, or for a special occasion, you can hire the intimate wine cellar for air-conditioned comfort. Italian taste is honoured, utilising fresh seasonal produce with bold flavour. The specials board changes daily, to allow for local seafood to be served soon after it’s caught. Pasta and gnocchi are made in-house daily as are the delicious desserts. Herbs are grown in gardens at the front of the restaurant for a true garden to plate experience and the extensive wine list features quality wines from Australia, New Zealand and Italy to complement the food. The Tiramisu is Leni’s own recipe, and she crafts her

own Limoncello using organically grown lemons from her home tree. Her greatest achievement is giving her staff a place they can be proud to call their own. “The standard of service comes down to the team being proud of where they work and confident in the quality of the food they serve. Some have been with me for many years, it is them I have to thank for providing locals and visitors such a memorable dining experience,” she said. Delectible antipasto, succulent seafood and decadent dessert. Dine at La Tabella and rediscover the Italian passion for good food and great company. Open seven days; breakfast, lunch and dinner.

- Airlie Beach Festival of Music brings stellar headline acts What could be “better than” John Butler performing at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 8-10?

Daughter to an icon, Mahalia Barnes will also grace the idyllic waterfront main stage setting at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.

For some fans seeing this blues and roots legend will be the highlight of the festival’s seven years to date.

Meanwhile AC/DC fans are in for a treat, with ‘Bon But Not Forgotten’ described as the closest anyone can get to the real thing.

For the man himself, ‘JB’ is looking forward to “going with the flow”.

Featuring a knock-out line-up, including past members of AC/DC and Aussie rock icons The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Wolfmother, this band knows how to electrify a crowd with its explosive repertoire of AC/DC's greatest hits.

“I’ve been lucky to play a lot of great places over the years and I look forward to seeing what the vibe is like (in Airlie Beach),” he said. “For me the most important thing is connection with the audience; I remember that more than anything else to be honest, so I hope the audience wanna bring their ‘A- game’ like I do.”

Making history at the festival for a second consecutive year will be the Airlie Beach ‘All Stars’ consisting of Nicky Bomba, his band Bustamento, and rock ‘n’ roll legends Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde.

Known for his ‘Sounds of the Reef’ project with its environmental focus on the Great Barrier Reef, Butler says he appreciates all that the Whitsunday community has done to protect and preserve the natural treasures on its doorstep.

Fans who saw the All Stars’ impromptu performance in 2018 after Smash Mouth leadsinger Steve Harwell was forced to retire, say it was pure musical magic.

“It’s nice to play to family who hold the same core values – feels like sometimes you can drop deeper more quickly,” he said. “But I really enjoy playing to all types; I’m playing solo so it’s different but essentially the energy is the same (and) you can expect me to be having fun at the very least.” Joining him on the line-up for 2019 is Mama Kin Spender, consisting of Butler’s wife Danielle Caruana and long-time friend Tommy Spender.

Bon But Not Forgotten

Williamson, the big names in the Australian Rock Collective, Australia’s most recognised Indigenous band Yothu Yindi, and also the Superjesus,” he said. Tickets are now on sale via OzTix, BigTix, Whitsunday Tickets, The MECC, Tourism Whitsundays, and direct from www. airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au. To see the full line-up and for all the latest news, follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

FAST FACTS • Only in Airlie Beach can you see 74 bands alongside 74 islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

Other headline acts include Aussie icon John Williamson, and the Australian Rock Collective, comprising Darren Middleton (Powderfinger), Kram (Spiderbait and The Wrights), Mark Wilson (Jet), and Davey Lane (You Am I, The Pictures and The Wrights).

• With jaw-dropping sea views from the main tent at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, the Airlie Beach festival of Music is a party like no other in a tropical paradise.

Festival founder, Gavin Butlin, said the 2019 lineup was possibly the strongest yet.

• Experience a town coming alive to the sound of music. With the music spread throughout 18 venues, the atmosphere is electric.

“To be bringing John Butler to Airlie Beach is massive, not to mention the fact we’ve got Smokie coming from the UK, a true blue icon in John

SUNLIT WATERS

•A mazing sunset sea views from the swimming pool •E very room has a balcony with views of the Coral Sea • L ocally owned and operated – friendly personal service • Great value for money full of amenities

I

n a popular destination like Airlie Beach, it can be hard to find accommodation which ticks all of the boxes and is incredibly affordable. But stop the search, I have found the ideal location for valueseekers! Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments provided a fabulous location for a holiday stay in Airlie Beach. What I noticed straight away upon arrival was that the location couldn’t be more perfect. It’s a short walk

44

from the centre of town, but far enough away from the main street to be very relaxing and peaceful at night. It is a boutique accommodation provider which is perfect, it means less likelihood of neighbour disruption and less people crowding the pool! Sunlit Waters have new owner operators, Chris and Fiona Williamson. I met Fiona upon arrival and was delighted with the personal service. My room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable with great pillows, I slept wonderfully during my stay and the shower pressure was fantastic! Sunlit Waters have the ability to book a number of Whitsunday experiences and tours, for the same price you would pay at a tour desk. I saved myself the hassle of a walk into town and booked a cruise with Fiona who recommended an adventure which ended up being absolutely unforgettable.

After a day out on the water, it was relieving to come back to my studio and use the laundry facilities to freshen up my clothes. I had some local seafood to cook and took advantage of the cooking facilities in my room to create the freshest marinara feast. I sat on my balcony with a glass of wine and watched the Coral Sea change colour as the sun set. I took a quick dip in the pool under the stars before snuggling under the covers. It was a blissful end to an incredible day. Great location, substantial amenities and great value for money, Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments provided the ideal base for my Airlie adventure. For the best rate possible, be sure to give them a call directly on p: 07 4946 6352 | e: info@sunlitwaters.com. Mention ‘Tripping Magazine’ when you call for their guaranteed best price.

Absolutely, in fact, after enjoying a romantic evening there with my husband, I have already booked a three bedroom apartment for when friends are visiting later this year. CRUSOE’S BEACH HOUSE

WHERE LUXURY ABOUNDS

Those views…

Sublime Coral Sea views with stylish living spaces and stunning facilities, Crusoe’s Beach House is perfect for family vacations and tropical relaxation.

The rave reviews say it all. Spectacular sea views await from the spacious upper and lower entertainment decks, which are fully equipped to make the most of the panorama. Outdoor relaxation comes complete with a sparkling splash pool, daybed and loungers, shade umbrellas, a lazing hammock and large alfresco dining area.

The ultimate Whitsunday holiday home, Crusoe’s is a stunning tri level, recently refurbished four-bedroom three-bathroom home in Cannonvale, Airlie Beach. It is beautifully decorated throughout to epitomise luxurious tropical living with supreme comfort and elegant design. Where service goes above and beyond…

46

To understand the grandeur of Crusoe’s, you need to know a bit about the owners. Brent and Wendy Robinson put more than 30 years of local real estate knowledge to use and became owner-operators of Crusoe’s after a major refurbishment in 2014. They know what people desire in luxury living, making Crusoe’s the ultimate home-away-from-home. A stay at Crusoe’s includes a personalised meet and greet service including welcome goodies. If you are arriving late, they have the option to grocery shop for you, ensuring provisioning is taken care of so you can relax upon arrival.

Comfortable living for 8 people… With four double bedrooms, tariffs are set for 8 people, however Crusoe’s can accommodate for up to 10 for families upon request. With three bathrooms and separate living areas, many families take advantage of the upstairs downstairs configuration and share costs between two groups. Honeymooners can enjoy the luxury of having an entire house to themselves, or when availability allows, couples can request the upper level only at a discounted rate, still with exclusive and private use of the lower deck and splash pool. Plan your stay to allow for a rainy day… There is a minimum 3-night stay at Crusoe’s,

however most people opt for five or more days, to allow for perfect planning for their Whitsunday island excursions. This means you can plan your most anticipated activities on days with the best weather forecast, and relax in the luxurious surrounds of Crusoe’s when the weather isn’t ideal for islandhopping. Spacious comfort with all the bells and whistles… Seeing is believing. When you enter Crusoe’s Beach House, you are welcomed into large open and airy spaces, beautifully furnished with both comfort and style in mind. The entertainer’s kitchen is a dream with a separate island kitchen bar. Enjoy sea-views from the dining table, or curl up in front of the huge television in the media room. Large modern bathrooms, comfortable beds, air-conditioning throughout and multiple break-out areas with ample seating. How to book… For bookings, visit the website online www.crusoesbeachhouseairlie.com.au and use the Book Now tab.

PORTSIDE WHITSUNDAY

THREE WORDS. PRIVATE ROOFTOP JACUZZI. The very thought of melting into my own bubbling oasis overlooking the bright blue Coral Sea with a cool glass of Champagne was enough to hit the ‘book now’ button immediately. But to my delight, the rooftop jacuzzi wasn’t the only thing that impressed me at Portside Whitsunday. This is a level of affordable luxury very rare to find. What type of accommodation is available at Portside Whitsunday? 19 luxury self-contained apartments are perched with a premium location opposite Airlie Beach’s chic Port of Airlie Marina. With many apartments providing panoramic sea views, spacious balconies and private rooftop courtyards with jacuzzi’s, there is no shortage of spectacular vistas. Apartments are one, two and three-bedroom configurations, as well as an opulent four-bedroom penthouse with its own lap pool and large internal spa bath. An array of the apartments come with private rooftop terraces with jacuzzi’s and sun loungers.

48

Each spacious apartment is thoughtfully presented with its own lounge, dining room and wide sunny balconies accessible from the main bedrooms and living areas, inviting you to enjoy the tropical breeze of al fresco leisure living. Where is Portside Whitsunday located? Portside Whitsunday is directly across the road from the award-winning Port of Airlie Marina, which is also the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands with Cruise Whitsundays departing from this location. Unlike the majority of accommodation in Airlie Beach, Portside Whitsunday is located roadside, so there are no hills to climb when you take the leisurely stroll to the town centre. What makes Portside Whitsunday a great place to stay? As a regular traveller, I couldn’t fault our twobedroom apartment. This is what impressed me the most personally, is that every feature is thoughtfully considered. From premium appliances and plenty of cooking essentials in the large kitchen, to a full-size dining table, plentiful comfortable seating in the spacious lounge and a large television with

a selection of premium Foxtel channels (cable television). The master bedroom also has its own television as well as access to the sea-view balcony. Each room has modern air-conditioning units and ceiling fans for fast comfort on a hot tropical day as well as large closets and mirrors. Our apartment came with two bathrooms, providing another level of comfort and luxury; allowing for his-and-her vanity space, two toilets, a bath and a separate shower. Of course, the highlight is when you go up one more level of stairs to open the door to your own private rooftop courtyard. This spacious area featured a large jacuzzi, barbecue, dining furniture and private sun loungers. Pure bliss. Portside Whitsunday also provides a heated wet-edge pool and spa nestled amid the privacy of a tropical garden setting as well as an undercover barbecue area. The friendly reception team are more than happy to recommend the best of Airlie, can assist with tour bookings and can arrange airport transfers. A delight for the discerning traveller, Portside Whitsunday provides luxury you can afford.

PORT OF AIRLIE

Few locations boast a position as phenomenal as Port of Airlie. Being one of the most desirable locations in the Whitsundays, you can drink in marina views while sipping on a martini; whilst you are only a short walk from the action of Airlie Beach, yet feel a world away when indulging in a luxurious spa treatment. Top off a day on the water from your apartment balcony whilst enjoying sweeping views of the Coral Sea. Wake to the aroma of an Italian coffee, taste gratifying gastronomy from a selection of restaurants then browse through the fashion and homewares at a range of cosmopolitan retail boutiques.

A

s a Mackay local, I know how lucky I am to live within a short drive of world-renowned tourism destinations.

Few destinations offer as many inclusions and attractions as you’ll find at Port of Airlie. After experiencing a weekend firsthand, I discovered a place where everything I could possibly want was close at hand. With a warm Whitsunday welcome from the Mantra Boathouse Apartment team, I was made to feel at home from the moment I arrived. The team ensured everything was in place for a memorable stay. Mantra Boathouse Apartments offers contemporary two- and three-bedroom apartments, fully selfcontained with all the comforts of home. As I opened the door, I was immediately drawn by the airy, spacious layout and the heavenly blue view straight off the balcony. I was drawn outside to take in the picture-perfect panorama. The warm sea breeze beckoned me to put my feet up on the balcony lounger and take a moment to decompress. Holidaymode had begun. Sunsets are beautiful here, as the sun drops, the marina turns from the Whitsunday turquoise blue to a brilliant shade of orange, glowing as the last bit of light from the day slips behind the hill. When I said the apartment included all the comforts of home, let me clarify, the kitchen is actually better than my kitchen at home. A solid stone island is the focal point for all your food prep, everything else you could need is provided for you to cook up a feast for family and friends. A large bath provides the perfect place to soak, reminisce and recharge for another day in paradise. What else I loved about Mantra Boathouse Apartments Unwind on the sun deck then take a dip in the resort-style pool. Use the outdoor cooking facilities

if you fancy poolside dining. Soak in the spa after a game of tennis on Mantra’s private tennis court. Let the kids burn off energy at Mantra’s own children’s playground. Enjoy air conditioning throughout the apartment and multiple ceiling fans ensure year-round comfort. Free, secure parking in the underground carpark with easy elevator access to rooms. A short walk from the Cruise Whitsundays terminal providing incredibly easy access to the Whitsunday Islands. Plus, it’s a short stroll to beautiful Boathaven Beach, where the locals love to chill. It’s so close to town and the famous markets, an easy stroll along the boardwalk. Destination dining at Port of Airlie Shortly after sunset, I strolled down from my apartment to scope out the options for dinner. Seafood, Modern Australian, Italian; I could take my pick without leaving the marina. I opted to try Fishbar as I had it on good authority that the seafood is so fresh it tastes as though it leapt from the Coral Sea straight onto your plate. This experience exceeded all my expectations. Mouth-watering dishes, elegantly presented, were bursting with flavour. Freshly shucked oysters, large prawns, salt and pepper calamari and fish tacos were just a few of the inclusions on the restaurant’s signature platter. Paired with a bottle of wine and live music, the waterfront ambience was both relaxing and memorable. The Fishbar is open for lunch and dinner, and offers live music on Saturday evenings. Room service is available if you are staying at Mantra Boathouse Apartments, and takeaways are a great option if you feel like a delicious seafood picnic. The rumours are true, the seafood was amazing, however, the diverse range of options on the menu impressed me even more. The seafood is sourced locally, you can taste the quality and freshness in every bite.

What a way to end a perfect day After a sensational sleep (honestly, the beds are incredible), I woke to the aroma of fresh Italian espresso on the waterfront. Breakfast at La Marina is available as an inclusion when staying at Mantra Boathouse Apartments. Feeling a little indulgent, I couldn’t go past the crepes with fresh strawberries. Deliziosa! My morning of indulgence had only just begun. My next destination was Vartamana Yoga and Day Spa; a relaxing retreat which encourages guests to enjoy some self-care by enjoying yoga and spa rituals for both health and wellness. With the extensive treatment menu; including spa, beauty and massage services; there is a promise of a sensory experience which will leave you feeling incredible. My treatment included a body scrub, a heavenly massage and a therapeutic facial. Owner and massage therapist, Leah, delivers treatments with a decade of experience, evident as I felt the stress and tension melting from my muscles. I was relaxed and my skin was incredibly soft as I floated out the door feeling refreshed and renewed. Retail therapy I never pass up the opportunity for a wardrobe update, so I popped into Billabong and Salty Kisses to check out the range of resort wear. I love the Seafolly brand, and with Salty Kisses offering the latest in fashion trends, a new top was a natural addition for my wardrobe. The fashion and accessories are tailor-made to the tropical climate, designed to blend with the Whitsunday style while being cool and comfortable enough to enjoy a day exploring the islands, reefs and beaches. It really is all here, at Port of Airlie. For more information about the marina or to make a booking please visit portofairlie.com.au
